Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you After years of having Ravens in the neighborhood, a pair built a nest just behind our house. Ravens are larger than crows and have a distinctive croak to their caw. In his book Animal Speak, Ted Andrews says, “With Raven, human and animal spirits intermingle and become as one. This is reflected in its deep, rich shiny black. In blackness, everything mingles until drawn forth, out into the light…. Raven has the knowledge of how to become other animals and how to speak their languages.” For this, I’ve loved any sighting or croak of a Raven over the years and have been thrilled to see and hear them almost constantly currently. I usually know when someone they don’t like is around, a hawk for instance. Or if one is off to get food, we all hear about it—mostly from the babies still in the nest. After a couple months of observation, I wanted to step up my interaction with the birds. Wondering if other people had become friends with their neighborhood Ravens, I googled “befriending Ravens.” It was a surprise to find the consensus was that doing so was a very bad idea. Upon further reading, it’s the use of food that people are opposed to. There was not even mention of another scenario for befriending a wild bird. Generally, giving food to wild animals is frowned upon because once they discover humans are the source of it, they have been known to terrorize other humans in hopes of receiving more food. This in turn, can result in death for the animal when the unsuspecting person believes they are being attacked. I spend a lot of time with my dog, Z. More than a couple hours apart is uncommon and too long. I do leave her most days to be with my horse, Tom. Some days Z comes to the barn too. The three of us don’t have lengthy conversations, we don’t have like minds, we don’t even walk on the same number of legs or perceive the world in the same way. Yet, that we are absolute friends is indisputable. I share all of my food with Z and carry tasty horse nuggets for Tom. Yet, delusional or not, the treats do not feel like the basis of our friendship. If Z and I go to a friend’s house, she will climb up on the sofa to sit next to me, no questions asked. If I leave Tom alone, he will call and fuss until I return. Neither has anything to do with food. So, when I thought of and desired to befriend the Ravens, food never crossed my mind. First of all, I wouldn’t know how to associate myself with it and I don’t have any interest in figuring that out. What, then, was I imagining befriending the birds to be like? I wasn’t expecting the Ravens to come give me a hug or sit down for a cup of tea and a long talk. Rather, I was simply interested in being acknowledged by them and to allow our spirits to intermingle as Ted Andrews suggests Ravens are capable of. More than likely they already knew of my presence. Animals, especially wild ones, are superior to humans in that regard. They have to be, so they know where to find dinner and are aware of where danger is. I often take my computer to the porch and work outside. So, every time one of the birds flew overhead, I waved and said “Hi, Raven.” Or I’d state a saying I created “IAYEIW” which is an acronym for “I appreciate your existence in the world” and pronounced “I-You.” Most of the time, I saw some kind of flight change like a slight pull down of the wings, or an acrobatic shift. Rarely, but sometimes, there would be no ‘nod’ at all. I can’t tell the birds apart, so maybe one bird ‘waves’ and not the others. I don’t know and don’t really care. I’m just happy to see them and when it happens to feel seen in return. For all our hubris, humans underestimate interspecies relationships. We seem to believe that the only reason a different species would befriend us is for what we provide them—food for instance. Sadly, that is sometimes the case amongst our own species as well. Is it possible to simply enjoy another’s company without asking anything of them? Wanting them to be something for us or behave in a certain way? I’d like to believe my relationship to my animal companions is like that. However, I also truly enjoy what they provide me, which is a sense of unconditional love, appreciation and acceptance—actually coming from the “love” hormone, oxytocin that releases every time we are together. Would I be able to continue with my adoration if it seemed they didn’t return my affections? I hope to never know from experience the answer to that. It seems likely that interspecies relationships (which are not always friendships) are the first step towards recognizing and knowing deeply that all life is connected. Not for our similarities but because we are alive on this humble planet together breathing the same oxygen. Literally, just as I finished typing that sentence, a butterfly landed on my heart center. I sat still happily taking in her medicine. We shared something—exactly what I won’t diminish by labeling or guessing. I simply know I am better for that moment, hopefully the butterfly is too. In love of animals,

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Receives NYS Grant

“We are thrilled to be with such a distinguished group of organizations who have been selected to receive funding,” stated Margo Olson, Executive Director of the Preserve & Park. “This is a huge boost to our organization and it is an affirmation that our work is recognized state-wide as being a valuable asset to our community, our region, and beyond.”

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced in a ceremony on Thursday, April 19 that $1.8 million in Conservation Partnership Program grants had been awarded to 55 nonprofit land trusts across the State. Representatives of the DEC and the Land Trust Alliance unveiled the grantees at an event in Skaneateles, in Onondaga County, in recognition of Earth Week, a weeklong celebration of New York's commitment and accomplishments to protecting our environment, conserving open space and increasing access to the state's vast and magnificent natural resources. The Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, who is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, received a $20,000 Capacity Building Grant. The grant will be used to enhance its efforts in environmental education

The grants, funded through the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), will leverage an additional $2.25 million in private and local funding to support projects that will protect farmland, wildlife habitat and water quality, enhance public access for outdoor recreational opportunities, and conserve priority open space areas important for community health, tourism and regional economic development. “Land trusts continue to make a difference in local communities, maximizing public and private dollars to protect and preserve our state’s natural resources for generations to come,” said Acting DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “Through partnerships like these, the Environmental Protection Fund provides critical support for many environmental and open

In the Capital Region, 13 organizations received grant awards including Saratoga PLAN and the American Farmland Trust who are also based in Saratoga County.

Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Event The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has an upcoming event on Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in Saratoga Springs. Admission is free and no registration is necessary. The name of the event is “The Visioneer Laboratory: Exploring the Possible and Impossible.” What is a Visioneer? It is: someone who has long term vision, and can think far and wide; someone who dreams, and thinks of the what ifs and the possibilities, and isn’t detracted by the naysayers and critics; someone who understands and resonates with what George Bernard Shaw once said: “You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’ ”; someone who isn’t afraid to think big and be bold and daring with their thoughts; someone who understands what Buckminster Fuller once said: “We are all born geniuses. It is the process of living that degeniuses us"; someone who has the courage to put their ideas out there, even if they seem crazy and foolish; and someone who can look at their own life and honestly understand what it takes to live a more healthier, happier and fulfilled life. At this Visioneer Laboratory, facilitator and curator Michael Wayne will help guide you, through an experiential experience

and the breaking into smaller groups, in a process that will allow you to vision, dream, and potentially create something that never was and then say "Why not?" For more information, call 518-210-1557.

Reclaiming Your Nature in Costa Rica

A transformational retreat to wholeness by connecting to nature— our personal inner nature and the outer Mother Nature facilitated by Katrina Clay. HEALING WITH DOLPHINS Satprem’s experiences with Dolphins

by Satprem ost people have heard of and enjoyed the adventures of Flipper the dolphin, but only a few have had the opportunity to see a dolphin outside of a zoo or aquarium. I had my first dolphin experience around the age of 12 during an open air dolphin show. A few "cute kids" were allowed to feed and touch the animals. I felt sad when I was not picked, as one dolphin emerged from the water at exactly my height and looked directly into my eyes. This happened each time he passed me and my heart was on fire. From that moment I “knew” dolphins as something “more” than animals. It was a special experience. Every time I caught their attention I felt uplifted. When the dolphins jumped, I watched children’s tears dry and serious people lightening up. They brought joy to everyone.

M

In 1987 I sat meditating at a beach in India, feeling suddenly touched by energies never felt before. It was intensive, friendly and unfamiliar. It forced me to open my eyes. In that moment a dolphin jumped up high and my heart jumped with it. I closed my eyes again until that strange and forceful feeling came back. I opened my

eyes and again a dolphin jumped. This happened a few times and I became aware that it was no coincidence. The new feeling and the dolphin’s jump were connected. It felt like an initiation. During this summer the contact became so close that dolphins often came near and swam around or next to me. The experience was not only “nice” but also frightening as some of the dolphins were large and moved the water wildly around me. I returned to the Ashram, where I lived and was invited by the Mystery School to a closed dolphin group meeting. I shared my “initiation” experience and came to hear about similar stories from other participants. From that year on I have had a close connection to dolphins, watching, swimming and “communicating” with them. Afterwards, I always felt myself replenished. I followed experiences of other dolphin lovers on the internet and in articles. In recent decades “the secret” that dolphins have healing powers has become known and is accepted by therapists and scientists. One can watch physically and mentally ill people quite rapidly improving while they are swimming with dolphins.

TRANSFORMATIONAL

HYPNOSIS

A deep healing process that helps cleanse old emotions and limiting beliefs and patterns so you can make way for lasting new changes.

JEROME MICHAEL PINDELL Homeopathy Hypnosis Jin Shin Jyutsu

518 374-5492 www.jeromepindell.com In April 2007 I was invited to participate as meditation teacher and healer on a 10-day dolphin trip at Egypt’s Red Sea. It verified all my previous insights and experiences with dolphins and brought new surprises. We were a group of 14 people with only a few meditators and the crew. In the early morning I went to meditate on the deck, which almost touched the water. As my silence sunk deeper I heard the dolphins emerging around me. The water started moving and they were chattering and jumping for some time and suddenly disappeared. They surrounded us again after a while and “invited” one by one by their nudging, to jump in and play with them. It brought plentiful joy to watch everybody’s contact and afterwards listening to their underwater stories. It was something else to be exposed to the vast sea, surrounded by a pod of 90 wild dolphins. It felt indescribably blissful, timeless and in deep oneness with the universe. There was NO room left for fear, lost-ness and loneliness, only a vastness of peaceful unity. Through a mask I watched and followed the dolphins and was at times completely encircled by them. They danced with me, whistling their dolphin call, playing hide and seek games, chasing each other, diving under me to pop up right next to me. In short, they made me feel a part of their family. At one point I could only hear the dolphins because they disappeared into deeper waters. Suddenly a huge male submerged from the depth, swam closely to me, stopped in front and looked penetrating deeply into my eyes. I have no description for that look but knew I was consciously observed. He swam to another smaller dolphin and it looked as if they conferred about me while looking back at me. The bigger one returned to “checked me out” once again, returned to the smaller one to “confer about me” and so on, a few more times. It was eerie and felt like I was being thoroughly analyzed. Finally, they both disappeared into the depth to return with the whole

They came closer, forming a dense ball of moving bodies underneath me when an intense circle of light slowly spiraled up from the pod and met my body with an electric energy shock, which was absorbed by my heart. I was in a state of timelessness and “such-ness” similar to a Satori experience (moment of awakening) I had some years before. Warmth played around my heart and it was the same feeling I had in my first dolphin encounter in Goa 1987 while meditating. A “message” and another “initiation” was happening. Over the following days some extraordinary healing sessions happened through my hands. I then KNEW I had to merge dolphin-power with “my” healings and meditations. “My” healing-dolphin boat trip was born. Satprem’s Dolphin-Healing Adventure on the Red Sea, Egypt: There are only a few places where one can swim freely with wild dolphins and the Red Sea is one of them. In April 2017 I will offer the next Dolphin-Healing Adventure. Everyone who commits to the Self is welcome. There will be different dates available. Up to 18 people per trip will share 7 days of silence, laughter and exchanges on a yard. Together we will meditate, swim and snorkel with dolphins in their own living environment, have healing circles and I will also give “whole-istic” healing sessions to those who want and need it. Every day will be spent at the sea, with fresh air blowing in your face, swimming, reading, snorkeling, dancing, relaxing and connecting to yourself and nature. There will be two people sharing an en-suite cabin. Delicious vegetarian food will be cooked by 2 chefs. Alcohol and cigarettes are not welcome and I promise, you will not miss them. 13 Tips to Boost Your Metabolism by Karyn Dornemann, DC – Delmar Chiropractic oosting one’s metabolism is something many people try to achieve every day. Having a high metabolic rate increases the amount of calories, or energy, the body burns on a daily basis. Without optimal metabolism the body will store excess calories as fat for future use. The problem for many people is they don't ever use these excess calories and as a result struggle with weight issues.

B

There are many factors that affect a person's metabolism including age, weight, hormonal changes, lean muscle mass, diet, genetics, stress and the amount of physical activity undertaken on a daily basis. As you can see boosting your metabolism involves many factors, but the fact of the matter is that it is relatively easy to boost your metabolism if you are committed to doing so. 13 tips to help you boost your metabolism: Build lean body mass. As we age our bodies metabolism or ability to burn calories decreases. One way to offset this problem is by exercising. Lean muscle burns calories and the more you have the more calories you burn, even while resting. You can build muscle through resistance or weight training at least twice a week. You can also boost your metabolism by doing cardio exercises. You can choose to do this between or in conjunction with weight training. Simply going for a walk or using the stairs instead of the elevator are good ways to get in an aerobic workout. Eat Breakfast. Many people ignore eating breakfast. What they don't realize is that it's the most important meal of the day. Breakfast gives your metabolism a boost and provides a consistent energy supply throughout the day. The majority of people who eat a healthy breakfast have fewer weight and health issues than those who don't. Sugar is bad. Processed and refined sugar such as found in sweets and soft drinks overload the body with sugar causing many serious health issues including obesity and diabetes. Complex carbohydrates are a better energy source because they supply an even level of blood sugar. The human body just isn't built to deal with the large amounts of refined sugar most people include in their diet. However, most of us get too many of our carbohydrate calories from starches or grains. Try to limit your starch or grain servings to one a day – that's one slice of bread or a half cup of brown rice or quinoa. Spicy foods that make you sweat can help boost your metabolism. The active compound in spicy food that has thermogenic properties is capsaicin. It increases the amount of energy needed to digest your meals when you eat it with your food by just a little bit, and every little bit helps!

Get a good night's sleep. There is research that shows that people who do not get sufficient sleep tend to gain weight. This may be because the body uses sleep to heal and regenerate itself, including its muscular system. Drink more water. Water is the lubricant of the body. It also flushes toxins out of the body and keeps the kidneys operating at maximum efficiency. This allows the liver more time to do what it does best, metabolize fat stores. Eat more protein. Protein takes more calories to actually digest than does fats or carbohydrates. It also helps to build more lean body mass. How much? On average, a 150 pound person should eat between 61 – 80 grams of protein per day to maintain their muscle mass. This is about 0.8 – 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Don't miss meals. Skipping meals in order to lose weight is counterproductive because it actually slow metabolism and can lead to over eating. You also have to eat enough calories – because eating too few calories sends the wrong message to your brain – it starts thinking “famine!” and will slow your metabolic rate even more. Plan your meals. If you have a daily or weekly menu you are much more likely to stick to your plan. Use a meal tracker on your phone, such as My Fitness Pal, to track your intake. Accountability means you stick to your plan! Drink green tea. Green tea has been shown to boost metabolism and unlike coffee does not stress the body with excess caffeine. Black tea and coffee also have good effects on metabolism, so if you are not sensitive to caffeine, moderate use of these beverages is okay too. Include more high energy foods in your diet including vegetables and low glycemic fruits. These provide a more balanced energy source and will not cause blood sugar spikes. Make sure your thyroid is healthy. The thyroid gland is the primary regulator of your body's metabolism. Iodine, a micronutrient important for thyroid health is found in Brazil nuts and kelp. If you are legitimately hypothyroid, treat as directed by your physician. High intensity workouts also function to build muscle and improve metabolism. Sprinting and lifting heavy things (within reason, and with proper training) can boost your body's efficiency in burning calories and building muscle. Muscle tissue burns the greatest amount of calories and the more muscle we have, the higher our metabolic rate will be.

Boosting your metabolism can be done if you are dedicated to doing it. This does not mean you need to stress over each little thing but if you eat right and exercise you should see a decrease in body fat and a much more energetic and happy you. Taming

— Inviting in a protective power animal.

by Wendy Ball see fear as one of the greatest challenges facing humans in this embodied existence. Some say that the whole point of embodiment is to experience the dance of love and fear, and that the point of soul growth for a human is when they can bring themselves to choose love over fear. I know this to be true in my own life.

— Do relaxation breath (Herbert Benson). Breathe slowly and deeply and on the out breathe say something reassuring to yourself, e. g. “I am safe now,” or, “I can deal with this.”

As humans we have the potential to bring reflective, heart centered mind functions to bear on situations. However, those functions come on-line as a result of conscious choice. Our default reactions to situations come from our mammalian brain, structured to promote survival by reacting quickly to situations of perceived or actual threat.

I think the point is that for many people fear is our default response. It is a well oiled response that comes by itself without thinking. What happens next for many of us is an automatic response to avoid fear by responding to unconscious, habitual impulses to distract or soothe ourselves. We all know our preferred ways of avoiding the discomfort of fear. Generalized anxiety is the experience of fear without awareness of where it started or what it is about. Phobias are ways we have learned to avoid anxiety. Panic is runaway fear. To reduce or deal with any of these fear responses requires conscious effort to do something different. That requires us step out of our mammalian brain and into the more recently evolved higher reasoning brain, to stop and orient, and engage in a practice that grounds, calms, reassures, re-sets our nervous system.

Fear I

Bad enough that we are wired to look for threat which primes us to see it where it is not, but that there is enough real threat to keep us all justifiably nervous. Trying to push through fear may not be what we need. Checking our reality, respecting our limits, and knowing the difference between limits and avoidance is important. What can we to keep fear from taking over? Here are some things that I have found to be helpful in my own life and with clients: — Just knowing that our mammalian minds are wired for fear, for recognition of danger cues and to trigger mental/ emotional/physical responses, can be enough to help us step back from fear and check our reality before plunging into a fear response. — Bringing in acceptance and humor, and keeping out judgment, can help us to deal with fear more quickly and in a healthy way. — Having a multitude of ways to help ones nervous systems reset when it has been activated into a fear response is very helpful, e.g. bringing ones focus of awareness to what's going on here and now, breathing, making conscious connection to the earth, focusing on a physical activity, focusing attention on my senses: using vision, hearing, touch to stimulate here and now attention. — Holding a touchstone, something that anchors what one wants to remember about fear, and that focuses sensory attention here and now as one feels its smoothness, its contours, its weight, looks at its color, patterns, marks. I always have a pink rose quartz heart around. It acts as a touchstone and reminds me to connect with my heart. 14 Healing Springs I #86 I June—July, 2016

— Doing a re-setting practice such as sitting quietly with one hand on your heart and the other hand on your belly below the belly button. Begin with breating quietly and listening for your pulse, noticing where and how in your body you can feel it. When you have that, bring your attention to the other hand on your belly. This area is connected to your adrenals which shoot chemicals into your bloodstream when fear is activated. Many of us live with chronic adrenal activation. Talk to them. Let them know that there is no threat in this moment and that they can, like a scared cat up a tree, come down, relax, and rest..

— Practice confronting manageable fear-provoking situations to build skill and the confidence that comes with that.

Finally, love and connection are truly the antidote to fear. The trouble is that the ability to connect and feel connection is activated differently than fear in our nervous system. One might say we have several nervous systems and when the nervous system that responds to perception of threat fuels fight and flight is on, the nervous system that supports connection is shut down. When in fear, connection is difficult. But if we can bring ourselves to reach out, to our own heart, to our love of another, to an other or others who share our concerns or who might understand, in that act we re-set the fear response. “When we are in the grips of fear we close down and can’t be compassionate or generous. To love others we first have to be loving and gentle with ourselves....to accept ourselves, including our suffering and happiness at the same time, and then be able to wish other well.” (Thich Nhat Hanh - Fear, essential wisdom for getting through the storm.) May you be well, and happy, and free from fear. Minding Your Perception of Stress and Sniffing Out Relaxation by Sarah A LoBisco, ND id you know that perception, mindfulness, and aroma can mitigate the negative effect of stress? I just recently experienced this first hand. March 1st was the official launch of my book, BreakFree Medicine: A Systematic and Integrated Guide to Balancing Your Body! What an emotional and exciting time!

D

As most of my esteemed colleagues who are authors can attest to, and as most people have heard, getting a book out there to the public is not a small, smooth, free-flowing feat. It can be a little bit stressful at times. Okay, actually, it can be a lot stressful! Interestingly, I found out that it all depends on how balanced one’s perception is regarding the event which will determine the outcomes of stress. In other words, I was definitely practicing what health psychologist, Kelly McGonigal calls, “How to Make Stress Your Friend.”

Stress Effects Many have heard about the association between long-term stress and its negative impacts on our health from our head to our toes. This includes causing havoc on our musculoskeletal system (muscle tension), cardiovascular risk, hormonal balance, and more. It has even been linked to aging (telomere length) and dysfunctional coping patterns such as overeating and binge eating. (Of course, there is also the “Dorito Effect,” in regard to food cravings, which you can read about on my website.)

Now, stress isn’t all bad, or there would be no way to befriend it. It has a function and it can be adaptive. You need that burst of adrenaline for when you have to run from that saber tooth tiger! However, when the total allostatic load (the progressive “wear and tear” of stressors over time) exceeds our body’s ability to cope, it can contribute to the issues noted above. A 2007 review in Psychological Reviews reports: The importance of acknowledging the protective, as well as the potentially damaging effects of the mediators of stress and adap-

Furthermore, our brain and the experiences that shaped it when were young can determine the intensity of our stress response patterns. The article review quoted above does an exquisite job explaining all the different factors that mediate the brain’s response to stress, how stress modulates physiological responses, and the interconnections between them both. Other influences on our stress response are the stress hormones and life events that we were exposed to early on as youths (this sets the nervous system “tone”), our microbiome imprint, and the genetic ability to excrete stress hormones (such as enzyme variances in methylation).

Stress and Perception Another important factor in regard to how stress impacts one’s health relates not just to the stress itself, but a person’s belief in its effect on overall wellness. A 2012 study in Health Psychology

reported on this association between the perception of stress and how it effects lifespan outcomes, not just on the result of stress itself. The authors wrote: This study is unique in that it not only identifies individuals who report experiencing stress, but also those individuals who perceive that stress affects their health. Understanding this perception is critical for advancing knowledge of the health effects of stress and could have far reaching implications for future research and for designing interventions aimed at reducing the negative health consequences of stress. Interestingly, the above 2007 review also states the interconnectedness between the brain perception and how it mediates stress effects: The brain is the organ of the body that interprets experiences as threatening or nonthreatening and which determines the behavioral and physiological responses to each situation. Besides the hypothalamus and brain stem, which are essential for autonomic and neuroendocrine responses to stressors, higher cognitive areas of the brain play a key role in memory, anxiety, and decision making. These brain areas are targets of stress and stress hormones, and the acute and chronic effects of stressful experiences #86 I June—July, 2016 I Healing Springs

influence how they respond. This is particularly evident over the life course, where early life experiences, combined with genetic factors, exert an important influence on adult stress responsiveness and the aging process.

Using Stress Response Clues to Calm the Brain, Body, and Change Perception So, this brings us back to how I handled my stress during my book release. Several articles discussed two of my favorite techniques to keep my body calm and change my perception- mindfulness and yoga! Specifically, this month there were several articles that demonstrated that by calming the mind, the body responded. These articles included: • Meditation and Music for Modulating Breast Biopsy Pain • Mindfulness to Help Elder’s Back Pain • 11 Scientific Reasons Why Meditation Is Mainstream (This list included modulating stress, aging, PTSD, heart health, sleep, schizophrenia, lung function, mood, headaches, and addictions… can’t put all that in one bottle!) • Yoga’s Benefits for Women Who Experienced Trauma Another one of my favorite ways to modulate stress is right through my nose! I’ve written previously on how essential oils modulate emotions, hormones, and stress on my website. Furthermore, I dove deep into the way lavender can be calming and how essential oils impact our brain. (You can find all these articles on my website at my essential oils database at http://drlobisco.com/essential-oils-database/.)

This means by one whiff of a pure essential oil, one’s perception and stress biochemistry can shift for the better. Sometimes, when I can’t quiet my geeky brain, the inhalation of orange, bergamot, or rose (found in one of my favorite blends Joy), can calm my prefrontal cortex a bit and dial in my “chill” brain for a better perspective.

To Become a Distributor If you would like to display the Healing Springs Journal for the enjoyment and education of your clients/customers please contact Katrina.

One study, “Effects of olfactory stimulation with rose and orange oil on prefrontal cortex activity” provided evidence that the scent of essential oils (rose and orange) actually modulated brain response by decreasing oxygenation to the “executive part of the brain,” making that part less active and enhancing relaxation. This study demonstrates that its important for people to choose stimulatory oils like peppermint for focus and calming oils like citrus and rose for relaxation.

Another wonderful review of bergamot included a clinical review as well as rodent and petri dish studies to explain mechanisms of action of this essential oil. The abstract reads:

“This means by one whiff of a pure essential oil, one’s perception and stress biochemistry can shift for the better.” (Italy). Bergamot fruit is primarily used for the extraction of its essential oil (bergamot essential oil: BEO), employed in perfume, cosmetics, food, and confections. The aim of this review was to collect recent data from the literature on C. bergamia essential oil and, through a critical analysis, focus on safety and the beneficial effects on human health. Clinical studies on the therapeutic applications of BEO exclusively focus on the field of aromatherapy, suggesting that its use can be useful for reducing anxiety and stress.

P

Ask the ractitioner Q

My last pregnancy was difficult with nausea, low energy due to anemia, & various sensations. I am not a fan of drugs, so are alternative therapies effective for me and safe for the infant?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell There are so many alternative ways to assist women during their pregnancy and post partum today. First I will discuss homeopathy, as that is my primary method of supporting women during this quite miraculous time. Its use is safe for both mother and infant. First, we must acknowledge that there will be a powerful change in the hormonal environment for the women. Many women commonly have some level of "morning sickness" in the first 3 months. Depending on severity, there a few remedies to assist here, even if it becomes severe or goes past the 3 months. Threatened aborting of the pregnancy can also be helped and homeopathy can be used along side conventional protocols. Anemia as well is a common issue that can find homeopathy very supportive. Other issues that occur later such as eclampsia and swelling of the lower extremities, can also be helped. 22 Healing Springs I #86 I June—July, 2016

www.healingspringsjournal.com

As the birth draws near, and issues such as position, as in breach position, anxiety, prolonged labor, even retained placenta can all be helped with homeopathy. Post partum issues, which generally arise from the hormonal 'storm', can find homeopathy useful without the need for powerful drug intervention. Breast infection, pain in the nipple or chapping from nursing, or delayed lactation are again issues that can occur and homeopathy can be supportive. As always, homeopathy is the art of individualizing the symptoms to the person and choosing a remedy that will be supportive. This is also true for the new born, and I have seen many infants over years of practice that have benefited from homeopathy. Other modalities that are a bit more specialized than I am, are in the arena of hypnosis and what is generally known as hynobirthing. There a couple of practitioners in the area trained in this specialty, and for those inclined to look into it, I can refer you to them. Also helpful is massage and other services offered by practitioners who write for this column. Support for the mother and the child is a very special gift for all concerned and can be used safely without concern for side effects to either mother or unborn. Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin Shin Jyutsu and spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet, whose newest book, This Thirst, is now available, along with his previous collection, Training Tracks, poems by implosion through Amazon. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. He can be reached at 518-374-5492 or through his website, www.jeromepindell.com.

Acupuncture; Gregg St Clair I’m lucky enough to have worked with many women through their whole pregnancies. Many women have come to me to not only help them while trying to get pregnant but also to work with improving fertility in artificial reproduction techniques like in-vitro-fertilization. It’s important to remember that pregnancy is not a disease. Like many things, Western Medicine will treat it with fear, and a new mother can be overwhelmed with all of the choices she needs to make. I believe that natural choices concerning pregnancy and birthing start out a new life on the best possible foot. Some pregnancies can go smoothly but more often than not there is bound to be a glitch or two. We can see breakthrough bleeding, gestational diabetes, placenta previa and a number of things from severe nausea and vomiting to being bedridden with pain. Most problems will sort themselves out but some can even be life threatening, so the healthier the individual is the less chance we have of seeing these things. Acupuncture is wonderful choice to augment your pregnancy and I usually recommend women come to see me every two weeks the first trimester and than once a month after that, barring any problems. I’ve seen many women go through natural childbirth, and I can tell you it takes a special person that is determined. By far the greater numbers of women are clueless about what’s going on. They’re unprepared and do whatever they are told by their doctors, giving up their power and rights over their own body and the birthing process. I usually recommend finding a midwife or a doula to assist you, not only through the pregnancy, but at the birth when it’s more difficult to make rational decisions. A birthing center is a great choice if there are any where you live. My first son was born in a birthing center in San Diego, California. It was just his mother, the midwife, a nurse and me. We were home four hours after the birth. My second son was born in Albany, New York, where there are no birthing centers. We chose a midwife with privileges at our hospital and we worked as a team to control the situation. Attending a live birth is life changing. A whole host of chemicals and molecules are released that fill one with Love and the desire to care for the newborn. When I saw my children born, I was healthy at the time, but I felt I wanted to do everything I could to not only be in their lives as long as possible, but to be a role model for a healthy, natural, fully integrated life. I believe that should start with you before the baby is even born. Gregg St.Clair, L.Ac., www.stclairfamilyacupuncture.com, 518-383-1230. Gregg St.Clair has a BA in philosophy with a Masters Degree in Health Science and Traditional Oriental Medicine. He has been studying Chinese Medicine since 1991 and been practicing and teaching since 1998. He has treated thousands of patients in the Capital District Area in New York since 2001 and is a State Licensed and Nationally Certified Acupuncturist.

editation is a state of consciousness. It is a growing thing that, when nurtured and cared for, grows strong and constant, like a big old oak tree. You can count on it.

Every time you meditate, it is as if you are building a mountain, one layer at a time. Meditation is like strata; once a layer is set down, it becomes a permanent part of your landscape. It is cumulative. When you meditate again, you add another layer to your mountain. You keep getting stronger and stronger. Even if there’s a gap of many years in your meditation practice, this stratification doesn’t go away. It’s right where you left it. You just pick up where you left off. Usually, it will have grown on its own some, too. Meditation is a discipline of mind blended with spirit that teaches concentration and focus. It brings clarity to every area of your life. It broadens your perspective, opens your mind to new ideas, and helps you feel free. The answers you are looking for can be found right where you are. Your point of power is in this present moment. It is so simple, yet it is true. All you need to do is know where you are in this moment in order to gain your orientation and sureness of footing. If you don’t know where you actually are, all the good or even profound direction in the world could lead you far from your intended destination. If you don’t know where you’re standing, your aim will be far from the mark. Meditation helps you know where you are in time and space. It grounds you in the world so that you can move forward with ?uidity and grace. Like a big red arrow on a map at the mall, it lets you know that you are here. When you understand where you actually are, the universe opens up with a thousand choices, each one unique and perfect in its own right, making it easy to know what your next step is. All you have to do is open your heart to the light and energy that

All you need to do is know where you are in this moment in order to gain your orientation and sureness of footing. flows through us in every moment. That flow is always present; it is constant and perfect, always available to you. Imagine a stream of pure love pouring from the universe straight into you. Imagine that same pure love flowing and dancing around and through every single thing on this planet and beyond this planet, every rock, every blade of grass, every deer in the forest, every star in the sky. Everything is connected to this flow.

expanded consciousness. In that opening, we can feel and merge with the creative force of the universe. This cosmic creativity is simply love. We may call it God, or nature, or luck, or spirit, or universal energy, or a higher power, or something else. Whatever you call it, it is still love. Pure love. Love that intends, love that makes, love that builds — not in an emotional way, but in a laserlike, conscious, and precise way.

And you are too.

When we meditate, we begin to recognize our connection with this creative force, and we begin to know that we are part of this love, that we are the same as this love. We are in?nite and eternal.

The only reason we don’t feel it is because we think that somehow we are separate from it. But we are it, and it is us. Feel it right now, in this very moment — let yourself open to the ?ow of love that is coursing through every single thing on this planet, through every single atom of every single one of us. Meditation gives us an experience of this, so we feel it and know it deeply, beyond words. Meditation opens your mind and heart. The opening of your heart is the most precious gift you can give the world. It affects everyone, and in this way meditation is also service: it supports the whole of humanity and all of life. As you become more aware, more conscious, you blaze the trail for the rest of us to follow, and our paths become much easier because of the steps you have taken. Know this, in your unfolding, in your deepening: that your inner journey creates an easier way for all of us. By meditating we open into love. We enter a place that is sacred. By knowing where we are, we create an opening, a window to

When we meditate, we become one with our in?nite self. In our growing awareness of this higher self, we become much more than our personal self. We begin to recognize the magnitude, the beauty, and the in?nity of who we really are.
