Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you As many of you know, I spent a month in Zimbabwe volunteering at a lion conservation program. While there, my days were filled playing with baby lions, walking the older but still young cats, cleaning poop of the fully grown ones, riding horses along the park’s border to check for poacher’s snares, walking alongside elephants and going on game drives in search of giraffes, zebras and impalas. What was my favorite part of the journey is a question often asked. My answer; the first time a lioness (Dykia, shown in photo below right) approached me to rub her head up against my leg—an action of acceptance and friendliness. Perhaps obviously, it was an extraordinary experience. Yet, underneath the enjoyment is the sad fact that there is a need for such a program. Specific numbers of wild lions are hard to pin down. There are guesses such as 90% decline in the last 40 years, 40% decline in 20 years. In October 2015, The New York Times printed an article entitled “Lion Population in Africa Likely to Fall by Half, Study Finds” which obviously predicts the decline to continue rapidly. Lions are special to me because my time with them gave me a deep understanding of their sweet community-minded spirits. However, there are well over 5,000 equally beautiful species whose populations are suffering—White Rhino, Polar Bears, Chimpanzees, Cheetahs, Florida Panthers, and Elephants to name a few of the big ones. Plus, the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, the Little Dodo Bird, Leatherback Sea Turtles and the list goes on. Additionally, there are plants such as the Georgia Aster and Texas Wild Rice. The most common reason for the decline is nicely referred to as habitat loss; which could also go by human population growth. Earlier today, while walking with my dog I was contemplating a process I’m creating called Soul Re-Collection. Marketing advice says to come up with problems that your business solves and address the people who share those “issues.” My instinct is to say this practice doesn’t fix problems. Even so, on this walk my brain was busy following said advice and trying to figure out what the process addressed. As I snapped out of the over-thinking, I saw some crows walking on the ground busy being crows, seemingly without troubles. When we approached they flew away. This made me think that perhaps what we call problems are really just life needing to be lived, rather than complications to be solved. Going back to the soul recollection process, its aim is to create experiences for the participant to deepen their connection to themselves, to their guidance, to their soul, and ultimately to their source. Stripped down, we were given the meaning of life upon birth. Our purpose is to be alive. That is as true for lions, elephants and dogs as it is for humans. It may sound overly simplistic; yet, the animation of life is where the sacred lives. I propose that if we accept our ‘purpose’ is simply to live, we can use our seeking behavior (an inherent need stemming from our basic requirement to locate nourishment) to find what enlivens us as individuals. The answer will vary from person to person, of course, regardless if our purpose is the same. For me, there are many things. However, the lifelong three are music, nature and animals—domesticated ones, and equally the wild ones—looking eye to eye with a Raven, having a hawk fly overhead and speak through my heart or walking with a young lion as it figures out the world. I’d like to be known for inspiring people to recollect their soul while becoming friends with nature, partnering with animals and losing self-consciousness (not self-awareness) within music. It is my assertion that when humans source their life with soul, their choices will reflect the unity of all living beings, not simply the comfort of our own species. Animals are the soul of the wild. What is happening to them is happening to the soul of our original mother, Nature, and hence the soul of our species. Neither the earth nor the animals need us to “save” them. What they need is room to be themselves without our interference. May we help in healing the collective soul by stepping back to reclaim our own wild nature and know deeply that we are only one facet of a great organism called Earth. Then to integrate that knowing with civilization to make choices honoring the whole. This has to be the new modern.

Yoga

A Personal Practice by Jocelyn Farrell oga is a personal practice; a sentiment that’s easy to forget amid the upside down, pretzel-like poses which constitute the bulk of our yoga related social media content. Sure, fancy poses are quite awe-inspiring and I tip my hat to those capable of perfecting them; but what we don’t always see are the many hours (years even) of continual practice that go into achieving such skills. I’ll admit, the sensation of finally moving your way into something that once seemed elusive is incredibly rewarding! But it’s not, nor should it be (in my humble opinion), the goal of a yoga practice.

Y

Having been practicing yoga asana (or postures) for the better half of a decade and teaching regular classes for the past three and a half years, I often see students doing what I like to call, “lookasana” — the pose where you look around at what everyone else

is doing, either in admiration or out of sheer confusion. It’s commonplace for us, as humans, to compare our bodies, our abilities, our journeys, etc. to those around us. But, like each of those things, our yoga practice is a very personal experience; what it looked like yesterday, it might not today. And what it looks like today, it might not tomorrow.

Regardless of our shape, size, range of motion or flexibility, we can each work to connect with our breath, step into the present moment, and move toward our own body’s expression of whatever particular pose we may find ourself in. For each of us it will look different because our bodies are different.

At its root, yoga is a practice of being present and connected to our true self — something that does not warrant judgment from anyone, including ourselves. Every day we may wake up feeling or looking a little differently. Some days we seek and find progression, and sometimes we must simply humble ourselves to work within our limitations. This is the beauty of life! Why should our yoga practice be any different?

Yoga is not about comparing yourself to the person next to you, or to the image in your mind of what you think it should look like. Yoga is about embodiment and expression of your own true Self. It’s about listening, honoring, and allowing your inner awareness system to guide you. It’s about embracing where we are with self-love and compassion so that we may reconnect to our Divine essence. Yoga is for EVERY one. And, best of all, it’s a practice.

Yoga gives us the opportunity to release expectations and limiting beliefs; it empowers us to remember that we are enough, and that there is space for us in this world however we may come.

“The quieter you become, the more you hear.”

Navigating Transition Successfully by Wendy Ball ransition is the journey between one place and another. We know we are in that in between place when an event, like a death or divorce catapults us into the unknown. Or it may be that our unease with the status quo, be it a job or a relationship hits a point of no return and we realize that change must happen. It is never comfortable. Sometimes the moment of realization that we can no longer rest in the familiar can make us nauseous and fill us with dread.

T

The human mind needs to know, likes to anticipate. It is, by its nature, uncomfortable with the unknown. I am reminded of what it is like to travel by car to a new place. Good as my GPS is and much as it helps me to anticipate by providing the distance to the next turn, I am on edge until I reach my destination. Have you noticed that the way back always seems easier and seems to take less time? In a certain way we are always in transition, standing in the present, looking back at the past, looking forward into the future. There are commonly recognized times of transition such a midlife, job loss, recovering from a major illness or accident, moving on after loss of a spouse or a child.

My favorite way to consult tarot is a three card spread. The card on the left represents the recent past. It may be about a challenging time or a good time, about grief or happiness, about clarity or confusion. It is what has brought us to where we are now. The card in the middle speaks to what we are experiencing now. The flavor of the now experience is tempered and informed by our experience of the recent past. We may be experiencing the sunlight after the storm. We may be experiencing grief after loss. We may be experiencing time alone clarifying our boundaries after a family or relationship drama. The card on the right represents what we are moving into. Once again, a card in that position carries its own flavor and as a future card there is often an edge, that instinctive edge of uncertainty regarding the unknown. We often feel we have to brace ourselves, draw up our courage, become fit to take on a challenge. Or sometimes it evokes relief of indicating a good outcome. The relief itself is telling: oh - whew - we will be in clear waters; we can move ahead with confidence because it looks like we will succeed. For eons humans have been trying to divine the future as they deal with the challenges of the present and try to decide good timing for a change, or even whether to risk change or hunker down with

what is at hand. On the individual level it may look like the following: Do I risk leaving this relationship or marriage? Do I risk leaving this job? Do I risk moving to a new place? What about committing to a training program. What about the decision to have a child? On the collective level it looks like: how do we recover from an epidemic, or a war, or an event like 9/11. How do we recover from an economic disaster. And, all of us negotiate individual transition in the context of our collective reality. In my experience as therapist and energy healer there are a few things that seem important in successfully navigating change and transition.

1

Being inner directed. This means knowing your own truth and cleaving to it. We are constantly pushed and pulled by society's norms, what vested interests want us to buy into, what individuals around us want us to do. We need to deal with all these influences but in the end we own and are responsible for our own lives. If you have ever made a difficult choice based on your own needs and deep desires you will know what I mean.

2

Embracing change as part of life. We hear it over and over, but it is true that bringing acceptance to the discomfort of change and the experience of not knowing helps us weather it successfully. Practices like tai chi help us find our balance in motion. Fitness activities harden us to physical discomfort, make us strong, give us endurance.

3 4

Be aware of your Achilles heel, I.e the sore spots in your psyche that tend to hijack you into fight, flight or shutting down reactions like procrastination. Get help with these. It is well worth it. Maintain a process perspective and a high view that can help you orient when needed and make better judgements regarding where you are in a cycle of change or in stages of a process. Is this time for patience or push through? Is it time to learn more or to trust what you know and take action.

Know that the skills and qualities you develop while weathering one transition will support you in the next, and there will be a next. It is truly helpful to be able to say "been there, done that." Every transition you navigate helps you meet the next unknown. Finally, many of you reading this have been exposed to the belief that we are about to collectively experience “The Shift,” that will alter human life on this earth as we know it. This may be true. We cannot really know what the future holds for us on this level. Thinking about this kind of thing is like thinking about death. It is something out there that awaits us all and represents the ultimate unknown. Our minds may make up theories about it but our bodies know only the instinct to survive. I believe that what will support us to meet death at whatever level are the same things that help us successfully navigate any transition. I believe practicing the art of embracing change with courage, heart, tools and practices puts us in the best place possible to successfully navigate "the big one," when that time comes.

By Ann Carey Tobin, MD nflammation has become a dirty word. What most people do not know, though, is acute inflammation is a protective immune response that initiates the healing process. In response to a stressful event, such as infection, toxin exposure, injury, or poor dietary choices, biochemical messengers are released (lipid mediators, cytokines and chemokines) to promote a familiar cascade of events. White blood cells rush in, and blood vessels dilate to increase blood flow. Healing is the objective, but it is often accompanied with the unpleasant side effects of swelling, redness, warmth, fever and/or pain. This is an adaptive response that, despite the potential for discomfort, actually serves us well in confronting acute assaults to our health.

Healing Springs I #88 October—November, 2016

Acute inflammation is an effective self-healing modality that ideally curbs its own process through release of anti-inflammatory messenger molecules. The trouble begins when the process becomes a chronic, low-grade inflammatory response that continually floods the body with inflammatory chemicals. The result can be obvious damage to cells, tissues and organs, as seen in the swollen and painful joints of arthritis, the diarrhea and bleeding of inflammatory bowel disease, the persistent dysfunction of injury, or asthma’s inflamed and constricted airways. A more “silent” inflammatory process, however, may play a significant role in such chronic conditions as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, autoimmune conditions, periodontal disease, macular degeneration, osteoporosis, cancer and obesity. When acute inflammation resolves on schedule tissue repair occurs and the body returns to a state of homeostasis—internal stability. Until relatively recently this process was felt to occur passively, that is, the insult is eradicated and the pro-inflammatory signals dissipate on their own. Within the past decade research has delineated two distinct phases of the inflammatory process that need to be in sync to expedite the return to homeostasis. The initiation phase is the call to arms just described. The resolution phase is now known to be an active process that depends on the release of a set of its own lipid mediators with various functions. This class of mediators is called specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators, or SPMs, and consists of four families—resolvins, protectins, maresins, and lipoxins. Together they ensure the programmed death of the now unneeded neutrophils (white blood cells) and block further unnecessary migration of neutrophils into the site; stimulate macrophages (white blood cells responsible for clean up) to remove dead white blood cells, bacteria, and debris; decrease the pro-inflammatory signals; help with host defense; and promote wound healing and tissue regeneration. Without a healthy production of SPMs the resolution phase will be stunted or fail, resulting in chronic inflammation and tissue fibrosis. Most of the SPMs are down line derivatives of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and one is bio-synthesized from the omega-

6 fatty acid, arachidonic acid (AA). Much of the AA in the standard American diet is derived from linoleic acid (LA), found in many processed foods that feature grains (especially corn), soy, and vegetable oils. Some nuts and seeds are also sources of linoleic acid. Rich direct dietary sources of AA include poultry, red meat, organ meat, fish (especially farmed raised grain fed), and egg yolk. Balance is key, since excess intake of AA can be diverted to support the inflammatory pathway. Generally speaking, most Americans consume more than enough of the omega-6 fatty acids responsible for inflammation, and would benefit from cutting back, especially the processed grain-based foods (e.g. pasta, bread, crackers, pizza) and grain fed conventionally raised meats. Choose healthier sources of LA and AA in moderation to ensure an adequate dietary supply of AA to support its role in the resolution phase of inflammation. Healthy sources of omega-3 fatty acids include cold water fatty (oily) fish, walnuts/walnut oil, flax seed/flax seed oil, hemp seed/hemp seed oil, chia seed, soy (especially edamame), sea vegetables/algae, dark green leafy vegetables, omega-3 enriched eggs, wild rice and canola oil (organic, expeller-pressed to avoid contamination from pesticides and chemicals; and, note that the health benefits of canola oil are considered controversial). On this list the only direct source of EPA/DHA is fish, or the oil derived from fish and algae. Otherwise, dietary EPA/DHA must be converted from the plant-based omega-3 essential fatty acid precursor—alpha linolenic acid (ALA). Unfortunately, this conversion is not very efficient. In addition, the further down line conversion of EPA and DHA into the vital SPMs is also hampered by genetic, dietary, and lifestyle factors. Support of a robust resolution phase requires the consumption of abundant healthy sources of ALA, cold water fatty fish, and/or additional supplementation of EPA/DHA with fish oil or DHA supplements from algae. Even then the resolution phase may not engage adequately due to a lack of the necessary supply of SPMs. Fortunately, there is now a process available that can synthesize a SPMs-enriched product from fish oil, resulting in a supplement that has demonstrated the ability in clinical trials to support the resolution phase. In addition to eating a largely whole foods diet with abundant plants, lean protein and healthy fat, a regular regimen of physical activity, and attention to managing stress are also essential to support resolution of inflammation. Additional supplements can be useful adjuncts to this worthy endeavor, but should be personalized to meet individual needs. Some options include ginger, curcumin, Boswellia, trans-resveratrol, olive leaf extract, alphalipoic acid, GLA and vitamin D3. Attention to these lifestyle choices will improve your health and well being, and support the resolution phase of inflammation. Be well. Rethinking

Mammography

by Patricia Bowden-Luccardi LMT, CTT e find ourselves once again in the “Pink Washing” month of October, known as Breast Cancer Awareness breast thermography screen shot Month, amidst a flurry of pink ribbons, with the war like mantra, ‘Catch it early, save a life and save a breast’.

Christiane Northrup MD, warns, ”in fact getting regular mammograms is actually more harmful because you are subjecting your healthy breasts to cancer-causing radiation.”

Mammography has been promoted as the best way to screen women for breast cancer. There is no question that mammography identifies breast cancer at an earlier stage when compared to older techniques like the breast exam. However, the key question to ask is, “Do women who undergo mammography have a lowered mortality rate compared to women who do not undergo mammography?”

The cancer industry is spending virtually nothing of its multi-billion dollar resources on effective prevention strategies, such as dietary guidelines, exercise and exposure to toxins. Instead, it pours its money into treating cancer, not preventing or curing it.

W

Two major studies recently published in the British Medical Journal and JAMA Internal Medicine have shown that mammograms, long thought to save lives, actually have done little to reduce late stage cancer, and that up to one-half of all “early” diagnosis have not saved a life, but has led to over diagnosis and therefore over treatment. Another study in Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, aptly titled, “Mammography screening is harmful and should be abandoned,” shows that even decades of screening has done nothing to reduce breast cancer mortality. This is even in the face of millions of new and supposedly “early stage” or “stage zero” cancers being diagnosed, which inflate survival rates. How many of these women will develop “true” cancers from the overprescribed radiation (and chemo)? How many will develop, or already suffer from, other physical and mental health issues? The psychological effects of a cancer diagnosis include clinical mental illness and even suicide. Based on data from over 6 million people, a positive cancer diagnosis raises suicide risk 12 times over in the first week and by 3 times in the first year. To make things even worse, women with BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 gene mutations are more vulnerable to radiation?induced cancers, but are encouraged (or often shamed) to have mammograms more often and starting earlier than women born with the normal variants of the genes. In undergoing mammograms, women are exposed to radiation. Radiation, as we know, is a cause of cancer. The lower-dose ionizing radiation used in mammography has been shown to be up to 3-?4 times more carcinogenic than high dose radiation.

In the largest review of research into the connection between lifestyle and breast cancer, the American Institute of Cancer Research estimated that 40% of US breast cancer cases could be prevented if people made wiser lifestyle choices. Preventing cancer is far more important and powerful than simply detecting a tumor after it has already formed.

The Breast Cancer Fund, a 5019(c)(3) that works to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer, makes a persuasive case that the industrialized world’s increasing reliance on various chemicals is linked to the current incidence of breast cancer. Another factor that can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer is iodine deficiency. Iodine levels have fallen over 50% in the U.S. over the last 40 years. During that same time, breast cancer rates have skyrocketed. Identifying and treating iodine deficiency could go a long way to promoting healthy breast. So what is the alternative to radiation? Regular self-?examination along with thermography and ultra sound is a safe, painless way to detect breast cancers early without causing them. Thermography, an underutilized, radiation-free breast and cancer screening, can inform a woman about the health of her breast and visually show the environmental load they carry. The most promising aspect of thermography is its ability to spot abnormalities years before mammography can. As thermography as your regular screening tool, it's likely that you would have the opportunity to make adjustments to your diet, beliefs and lifestyle to transform your cells before they became cancerous. Get clearer results and fewer additional tests. Isn’t this what women want? Talk about true prevention. But for the number seared into the flesh of her back, and the braille-like symbol upon her hip, her vulnerability might go unnoticed. Annie lives in Chatham, NY at Equine Advocates, a sanctuary for abused, neglected, and slaughter-bound horses. Found in a kill pen and tagged for meat, Annie was pregnant with Connor when she was rescued. She was one of the 70,000 pregnant mares confined in Canada to meet the world’s demand for Premarin. Conjugated equine estrogen is extracted from pregnant mare urine (PMU) to manufacture Premarin, a hormone replacement drug consumed by over six-million women to quell symptoms of menopause. At the peak of its popularity, the drug earned $2-billion a year for its parent company. To produce Premarin, mares as young as age three, are tethered 24/7 between steel pipes and forcefully impregnated for up to a dozen or more consecutive years. So small is their stall that they cannot move more than one step in any direction. They cannot turn at the neck to scratch their expanding sides, or to nuzzle the life growing inside their belly. Unable to lay flat, their legs cramp, swell, and ache. They are always thirsty. Factory workers limit water consumption -- estrogens from dehydrated horses are more concentrated. This accelerates renal and liver failure. The weight of urine collection devices strapped under their tails infect and pulverize their vulvas.

The 70,000+ colts and fillies born into this industry are labeled “by-products”. The newborns are crushed and recycled like aluminum cans, or rushed live to Japan where their tender young flesh is served as Basashi. Occasionally, a foal is adopted. After delivery, the mother is reattached to the “pee line” and left to grieve. I have invested my lifetime in the study of mares and foals, and I have witnessed their lasting bonds of love. Even after years of separation, equine families celebrate reconciliation with deep affection and unique vocal recognition. The natural lifespan of a horse is 30 years. Most PMU mares suffer a violent death by age 12 – or younger, if their uterus fails sooner. PMU mares are primarily draft breeds; it takes multiple captive bolt blows to the head in a slaughter house to down a oneton horse for dismemberment. The FDA approved Premarin in 1942, and in the decades to follow Premarin catapulted to the most prescribed drug in America. From 1975 to 1999, 10-million women per year used this ‘miracle drug’ to control hot flashes, depression, insomnia, and other menopauserelated ailments. In the same time period, research demonstrated a substantially increased risk of endometrial cancer associated with Premarin. In the face of scientific warnings, big pharma continued to overstate Premarin's benefits while downplaying its harm.

“Very Accurate and Insightful!”

In July of 2002, Premarin's success story shut down: an 11-year study by the Women’s Health Initiative revealed that the drug significantly increased the risk of invasive breast cancer, heart disease, strokes, blood clots, and ovarian cancer. By 2006, annual sales halved to $1-billion, where they have remained. Since 2009, Pfizer has paid over $1.5-billion in settlements to tens of thousands of women who suffered breast cancer due to Premarin. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Pfizer has set aside hundreds of millions of dollars more for future claims. And, regardless of the World Health Organization's classification of conjugated equine estrogen as a known carcinogen, the FDA continues to allow producers of the Premarin family of drugs to omit the word “equine” from its labels. Despite years of overwhelming evidence of its dangers, Pfizer recently announced it would be expanding PMU contracts in Canada due to the recent surge in sales of Premarin, Prempro, Premphase, Prempac, Duavee, and topical Premarin Vaginal Cream. PMU-sourced drugs are a harbinger of death for both women and horses. It is already abhorrent to subject horses to abject torture--but for a mega-corporation to do so in order to profit from carcinogenic substances that cost additional human lives is morally indefensible.

Those marks are mistakenly called bruises because they look similar to them. They’re completely safe and are actually a sign that the cupping is working. Your body has to store anything it can’t process and eliminate. Some of those things are naturally occurring that have just built up if your body is working inefficiently, like old cells. Some items come in to your body that aren’t recognized as natural, such as chemicals in body lotion, food additives, or pollutants from the air you breathe. When a cup is left in an area for a long time, it draws out anything in your body that’s no longer needed. Old, used red blood cells have a dark pigment when they come up to the skin, creating the purplish marks you’ve seen in photos. They’re just sloughed off with the top layer of older skin cells in several days, along with any impurities that were also pulled up. This detox effect is one of many reasons people get cupping. Originally animal horns were used for the cups and suction was created with fire. The marks you see on athletes and celebrities are

The Magic of Autumn by Mary Ellen Oliver s summer warmth fades to cooler nights, and the dew on the grass turns into crystalline drops, Fall is in the air. As a child I didn’t want summer to ever end, but as I grew older I began to appreciate the delights of the Autumn Season.

A

When the Vernal Equinox arrives, and the harvest is in full bloom, the energy changes all around us. I live in New England, and every fall I can feel the Colonial energy starting to bleed through from older times. As New England got started with the new arrivals from Europe, they brought with them age old customs, old wives’ tales, and their particular brand of magic. One fall item full of ancient tales and magic was the apple. The seeds were brought over by the Colonials settlers. And with the apple came a whole host of magic spells, traditions and tales. Apples are an outstanding result of September and October’s harvest. There are many love tradition’s from around the world involving apples. One of these traditions comes from Ireland. On Halloween night the Irish celebrate by playing romantic fortune telling games. These games are thought to predict the future marriage partner. One spell goes like this; a young lady, would take an apple and attempt to peel it without breaking the strand. When she finished, she would throw the peel over her left shoulder. Whatever initial the peel spelled out as it hit the floor was the initial of her future husband. Another apple love spell comes from Roman times, where the Roman Goddess Pomona ruled over apples, gardens and fruit orchards. The Roman lady would take apples seeds and separate them, throwing one seed into the fire while saying the name of her beloved. If the seed popped the love would be returned; if the seed burned silently it could be a bad sign. Apples are said to have originated in the fruit forests of Eastern Europe. Apples were symbols of the ancient isle of Avalon, today known as Glastonbury, England. In the ancient tradition of bobbing for apples the spell said whoever captured the apple in their teeth was blessed by the Goddess for a year. It was believed that eating apples could open the portal or gate to the Fairyland and other magical realms. A magical property of the apple is to illuminate our minds and thoughts. It allows us to gain knowledge more easily.

The apple tree is connected to many magical creatures. The Unicorn is said to live under the apple tree, and in the season of Spring, the flower fairies inhabit the Apple Blossoms. They then absorb all the love from the apple tree blossoms, and spread the apple tree love around to everyone they encounter.

Ask the ractitioner

In as much as there were no questions submitted to the Ask the Practitioner column, as editor of the column I thought that I would offer some reflections on an issue that seems to be an aspect of what many of my clients are needing support, as they work on the issues that brought them to me in the first place.

W

hat role does thought and attitude play in the long term process of healing? The short answer is quite a bit. Thoughts such as: I had no choice, this is a waste of time and money, this is too expensive, why me, I'm not certain this will work, but...., the prognosis is not good, I will TRY......are just a few of the blockades that the thinking, and presumptively rational mind present to the consciousness. The list could go on and on, but the point is that the doubt energizes fear, and ultimately blocks your very powerful mind from accepting supportive interventions that are offered to help change bio-energetics of your experiences here while in the body. Raising the vibration of your thoughts can lift your energy, and stimulate your immune response to act appropriately on the condition that is disturbing you. This is not to say that challenges will not present themselves to us, and that we will not need an intervention by a doctor, a dentist, a surgeon, but how we react and respond can affect how well interventions will support and serve us or allow us to fall into a void of failed attempts. Wishing for something better, wanting someone to “fix us” or have a magical intervention is an expression of doubt, that you do not have the power and resolve to correct the disharmony with your thinking.

You can correct your expectations by expanding your perspectives to include many scenarios, and follow the one that resonates with your desire for health and harmony. When we fail to ask for what we need, we do not receive it. When we accept what does not serve us, we burden our selves. It is important to remember when asking for what you want, to be aware that you may not be ‘seeing’ the best case scenario. I have found that adding to any form of prayer or expression of desire that you seek: “this or something better” affirms my ability to remain open to possibilities that may be outside the conscious reality and can lead to more favorable outcomes. So what we say to ourselves, especially when done repeatedly, does have an impact on any outcome that we hope to move toward as we live our lives to our fullest potential. Harmonizing with the environment in which we are traveling, living, and coexisting, is an opportunity to experience the multitude of wonder that is possible during our brief time here. When we bemoan our situation, focus on the negative, even expect a limited or unfavorable outcome, we will receive “whatsoever we give attention to”. Our mind is an incredible tool, which continues to be discovered in its endless complexities. You can master of your responses to the inevitable challenges that are a part of life. Choosing struggle or an adversarial relationship with life and its disharmonies will become your reality. Choosing to recognize that limitation is a state of mind, can free you to take charge, change your thinking, and expand your reality to be able to perceive the beauty in every experience and find peace amidst the seeming chaos. Does smell impact hunger, appetite, and weight? uring my morning ritual of reading through all the latest health and medical headlines and new research releases, one particular news brief from Science Daily caught my eye: “New device could help improve taste of foods low in fat, sugar and salt.” The summary read: Scientists may be closing in on a way to let consumers savor the sweet taste of cake, cookies and other delights without the sugar rush. They have isolated several natural aromatic molecules that could be used to trick our brains into believing that desserts and other foods contain more fat, sugar or salt than they actually do.

Healing Springs I #88 October—November, 2016

A combination of aromatic molecules, the psychology of food preferences, and brain biochemistry! I had a hit! Immediately, questions emerged in my head: “Could aromas make healthful foods more appealing and decrease some of the addictive properties of certain foods (many manufactured to be that way)?” “Could essential oils be a potential tool to deal with the obesity epidemic?” Sometimes, my thoughts jump ahead of my eyes. I read on: Aroma plays a vital role in how we perceive food (just try pinching your nose closed while you eat — odds are you won’t taste anything). Based on this fact, food scientists have long used chemical aromatics, essential oils and botanical extracts to enhance the flavor of food and beverages to boost sales. In short, these researchers were able to isolate several natural aromatic molecules that could be used to trick our brains into believing that desserts and other foods contain more fat, sugar, or salt than they actually do. This in turn, can impact appetite. This new trial was based on the scientists’ original research on how smell effects taste perception. It consisted of a flan dish with no salt. The participants were instructed to eat the flan with varying amounts of ham and salt aroma. They found that the ham aroma and varying degrees of salt smell fooled the subjects to believe they were eating salty flan, even though there was no salt! (Do you sense a bias of appetite decreasing in vegetarians?) Now, the French scientists were able to create a new device called a Gas Chromatograph-Olfactometry Associated Taste (GC-OAT).

Ancient Arts Veterinary Acupuncture Holistic veterinary health, dental and end-of-life care for all domestic species. Kristina Dallas, DVM ¥ Saratoga Springs (518) 727-2940 drkris@veterinar yancientar ts.com www.veterinar yancientar ts.com For the experiment, they combined this techy tool with an olfactoscan to produce a continuous stream of aromas through a tube to a subject’s nose. Here’s how this experiment went and the ham factor was eliminated:

So, let’s explore how our nose may assist with making better choices with food and modulate appetite. We may not even need a fancy, smancy new device to take advantage of the application!

Participants were asked to smell real fruit juice aroma through the olfactoscan. Meanwhile, the researchers used the GC-OAT to isolate molecules from the juice. Then, they added the molecules one at a time into the olfactoscan tube. As the participants smelled each of these mixtures, they were asked if the molecule contributed to their perceived sweetness of the fruit juice. Thomas-Danguin says the preliminary results suggest that this new technique could eventually help food manufacturers better formulate more healthful foods without sacrificing taste, aroma or texture of the original products.

This is evidence that scents can impact mood, physiology, and emotions. I even provided the references on how smell is being used as an indicator of longevity, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease in a previous article (http://www.saratoga.com/livingwell/2016/08/the-power-of-scent--moving-beyond-the-nose-inparkinsons-disease.html). Most likely, these connections are based on neural connections and the role of “sniffing out danger” for species survival.

Scientists will be presenting their exciting discovery at the National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). I will be on the lookout for the published results as the possibilities to me are very exciting! I have been reviewing recently the subject of food addiction and unhealthy patterns. It has always been an interest of mine (see some of my previous blogs at dr-lobisco.com). This is due to the fact that diet is such an important component of health, yet some people tend to have blocks in implementing more nurturing food patterns for themselves. Therefore, I have always been interested in tools and factors that support cravings and willpower. These include addressing: biochemical differences in brain signaling, hormonal imbalances, sleep, lifestyle, nutrient deficiencies, digestive disturbances, emotional connections to food, and education on eating foods that are designed to be addictive without consumer’s knowledge. This all helps me tailor a specific and personalized dietary and wellness plan unique to the individual. Still, results only last as long as biochemistry is balanced with emotional cues. (Visit http://www.saratoga.com/living-well/2016/08/individualized-nutrition-for-health-right-under-your-nose.html to read the latest results of a personalized study in nutrition.)

The Power of Smell

Interestingly, odor receptors exist throughout the body, indicating that odorants have functions beyond their direct aromatic effects. This means, even if one suffers from loss of smell (anosmia), they could still benefit from secondary metabolites of essential oils that effect cellular and organ function. (You can read more about that at http://dr-lobisco.com/essential-oils-aroma-benefits/ .) Now, we add to smell its connection to appetite and food intake. In Part II I’m going to explore more about the role of smell, taste, weight, and appetite. Truths From Standing Rock Camp ourselves. Many I spoke to expressed concern over this. I felt the truth of what they said while I stood there on the land where everyone was gathered. It was an incredible feeling. As we all stuck up for her together, and sought to protect her purity and heart as one, we had overcome our differences and accepted resolve.

by Hillary Raimo my Goodman, a journalist for Democracy Now, was issued a warrant for her arrest following her coverage of the protestors in North Dakota being attacked by private security dogs and pepper spray. I was outraged by this and was compelled to see it for myself. So I booked a flight to do just that. Tribes have gathered in Cannonball, North Dakota, protesting what’s known as the Dakota Access pipeline. The 1,172-mile pipeline is a $3.7 billion project that would transport approximately 470,000 barrels of raw crude oil a day from North Dakota to Illinois.

A

The pipeline route includes a plan that would put it under the Missouri River, just upstream from the Standing Rock reservation, and Sioux tribal members claim this would threaten their drinking water, as well as, their sacred sites. Hundreds of tribes in the U.S. and Canada have pledged support for the Sioux nation, and thousands of activists have traveled to North Dakota to help. I wanted to experience this great coming together firsthand, and interview people about their experiences. So I packed my suitcase and went in search of something greater than myself. One of my first impressions was that this was bigger than just a Native American issue. This was about the health of the water everywhere. It was symbolic as much as it was literal. When you consider the Earth’s water cycle circulates, you realize quickly, contamination effects everything. It doesn't matter what your heritage is because contaminated water effects everything regardless. It is one of the five platonic elements for a reason and keeping that element healthy benefits humanity and all life. Not just one kind of people. It is the circle that ensures this truth. Water poisoning effects the soil, therefore the food we eat. What we do to the land we do to 24 Healing Springs I #88 October—November, 2016

According to Lee Plentywolf, the seven ceremonial fires were lit in a ceremonial tipi that had not been used for centuries, and each tribal leader stood up and spoke in their native language over the flames. When he described this to me I envisioned that scene in my minds eye and I was humbled and inspired by what I saw. Honoring Earth by speaking up to those who take advantage of her, big corporate entities that leach off the human race to feed their fat bellies, is worth everyones time. What better way to make things right than to show up and do it. Speaking up about things is ok, and we should all do it more often. I was there as a white woman, with a media pass for yinradiotv, and few trusted me. But when I told them I was there to tell a different story than what the media was portraying and that I wanted to honor their story and message from their own experiences, they opened up and spoke to me. The feeling of that trust was humbling. Their stories and thoughts were like crystalline drops of truth ringing in the air all around me. The veteran elders had powerful stories to share. They opened up to how they viewed the government use of eminent domain and expressed how so few know their rights. I spoke to a man who specialized in dog training

and how unethical it was to use the training techniques to harm innocent unarmed citizens gathering peacefully for a righteous reason. I spoke to a native woman who held her son in her lap as she reminded us how water contamination somewhere far away, that may not seem like your problem, when you consider that your water sources can come from other areas, you really don’t know where your water is sourced, it IS your problem. Native Americans have lived a culture that links them intimately to Earth. Their prayers align with her. They know her therefore they can understand when she needs protecting and honoring, when enough really is enough. Everyone should listen to their advice on how to proceed into the future. All the voices of our indigenous earth people should be heard. Their vote matters!?Water is a right for all life. Human, animal, plant and otherwise. If that fact isn’t worth protecting, what is? As I photographed the waters edge one morning, I came across a frog. He looked at me and I at him, and he blinked. I asked him if anyone had asked his opinion on all of this?

I hope those who shared their stories with me are honored in this article. I want to serve those who opened up their hearts and trusted me in their sharing, and as a woman in media I am hoping to do a good story with higher purpose. That is my intention in sharing this experience. At night as those gathered beat their drums on the land near the river running through Standing Rock Camp, I realized this was a gathering of the tribes of epic proportion, and we were all standing on the land of the seven fires. It was a life changing experience, and I was not alone in that feeling. What is my overall experience of being at Standing Rock camp in North Dakota? Because I prefer my creative space to any other space these days, I leave you with the below image to ponder my muse, as well as the words, Water IS life. ??

As an artist who finds her bliss in creating beauty, I sat with my experience afterwards for a few days, and spoke about it openly to those who were interested. This gathering was of historical significance and the coming together of the tribes like this has not happened since the 1800’s. The message of unity is protect the water. No more pipeline.

The gathering at Standing Rock is a healing for the Earth. You have terrorists stabbing people in malls over what? Do we really know? And it is all over the global media getting the world’s attention because it feeds the fear. On the other side, you have the indigenous leaders gathering in prayer near the water to protect it and protest misuse of the oil industry and you barely hear anything about it on the news. Shame on the mainstream media for betraying the public this way. For altering the truth and supporting a system that poisons all of us. According to the late Masaru Emoto, prayer effects the crystalline structure of the water. This gathering is a massive prayer injected into the water crystalline structure of that river now and according to the water cycle will circulate the Earth. The gathering itself is a massive water ceremony for the entire planet. Inspired by that, a sample of the river water was gathered in a honorable way and will have its crystalline water structure photographed by Emoto laboratories in Japan.

"There is a time to adventure heartily into new possibilities, but there is also a need for quiet integration time on the self-creation journey. Profound experiences can accelerate the journey, but much of the real change happens at slower paces and the places in between. We can have all the peak experiences we want but the real work happens between the peaks, while laying down and integrating on the forest floor. Growers are inch worms. This may frustrate us, but it’s the only way to craft an awareness that is authentic and sustainable. May we give ourselves the time we need to truly embody our learnings." —Jeff Brown 30 Healing Springs I #88 October—November, 2016
