Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you During volatile times, it is tempting to become one-sided, creating further division between ourselves and those who don’t see life the same way—even if unitentionally. Recently, I have witnessed friends with admirable openness and intellect become close-minded, judgmental and a bit fanatical. The two issues on my radar are the presidential election and Standing Rock. With the rise of social media, and changes in media in general, we hear much news in sound bites. This often bolsters opinions, while leaving other facts out. That is perhaps even more dangerous to a society than not having any information at all. After being a print publication for most of 15 years, it has been considered for The Healing Springs Journal to go exclusively online. While it is already there for you to read at www.healingspringsjournal.com, I choose not to let go of print because it still feels like the best way to share information. There are no pop ups to distract you. You are not validated over and over again with only information you are already interested in—even I don’t know what’s going to be in the next issue of HSJ. If you adore print, please visit the advertisers that make it possible for you to read and be sure to tell them where you saw their ad. The election and Standing Rock. No matter who is president or what happens with the pipeline, let us not forget personal responsibility. If the earth is important to you, make actions that honor her. The government make regulations, humans carry out actions. If health is a priority, take care of yourself in body, mind and spirit. The government’s healthcare doesn’t give out health. If human beings are your thing, treat every one of them with kindness. The government has no way of stopping this no matter which side you sit. If you oppose the pipeline, keep in mind the reason they want to build it is supply and demand. It is out of alignment to oppose the transportation of oil, but not consider the gas mileage of your car or to use plastic without thought (plastic starts as crude oil, natural gas or other petrochemical derivatives.) It is wise to remember the earth is 4.2 billion years old and she has an order of her own. We are simply a part of that system. When we tap into natural order, we find peace, belonging and harmony at its root. Government is a construct of humans. If our goverment began with the same root system as nature, and I believe it’s possible that was the Founding Father’s goal, it has swung out of balance. The following is worth meditating on... “While our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans only evolved about 200,000 years ago. Civilization as we know it is only about 6,000 years old, and industrialization started in the earnest only in the 1800s....” Compare that to the planet’s 4.2 BILLION years and consider the intellect of experience. As a lifelong participant of the personal improvement era and healing community, I have become weary of seeking problems to solve within myself and others. Instead, it feels important to know who we are under all those supposed problems and act in alignment with that essence or soul. Sages and mystics have given guidance on this for mellennia. Still, this morning I contemplated how to know who we are beyond the mind labels in my own way. This is not a linear method; rather a commitment to experiencing self as itself. From there we can make the changes desired with this essence awake. Is self nature or nurture? Both. Here are my five suggestions to get to know self. 1. Spend time alone every day. This is the greatest commitment to you. It can be for as little as 15 minutes, so long as it is intentionally alone quietly focusing on you. 2. Do whatever allows you to feel the most intimate with your inner world. Writing, meditating, walking, sitting by a tree, and dancing are a few of my ideas. Additionally, I and others offer personal and group meditations which focus on inner experience. There is no right or wrong, whatever works for you. 3. For periods of time drop any sense of improving upon yourself or your skills. If writing, just write. Do not work on creating a final draft. If walking, don’t compare your distance to a different day. Just be in the moment intimately with your self as is. 4. Engage all your senses. We spend a lot of time THINKING and analyzing. Take time off from these responses and explore other areas. Sense the energy that animates your body. Do not pay attention in order to find problems (that is the mind), listen with your cells instead. Last but not least, continue to come back to this energy. When out and about in the world and around others in everyday life experiences, flash back to your time alone and bring up that same feeling—the one you know as your personal frequency. As human beings we are integrations of a variety of facets; soul, spirit, body, ego, thought, etc…. While we are all Divine, we are also individual expressions of that Divine. The energy you are “dating” during your alone time is your unique recipe of above facets plus more. The “parts” may work harmoniously, or they can go off in a variety of directions—leaving us fragmented. It takes awareness, not willpower, to bring them in to collaboration. Go forth and express your personal recipe and ALWAYS remember to act in alignment with your deepest beliefs. It is not enough to think them or post about them on social media. Henry Ralph Thoreau said “simplify, simplify.” A profound way to do this is by taking actions in alignment with our souls. Simple, not easy. However, it is a way to find peace inwardly, which will then express outwardly. Exactly what the world needs now.

The name of the program is “Awakening the Hero Within.” This program is a video webinar where Albany Peace Project founder Bethany Gonyea interviews internationally known best selling author Dr. Joe Dispenza. They will discuss how we can utilize the power of our minds and hearts to facilitate peace in this world and also discuss the opportunities to take part in research on this. After the webi-nar, Bethany will answer questions about the webinar and peace research. Dr. Joe Dispenza is the author of many books, including the best seller, “Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind.” His latest book is “You Are the Pla-cebo: Making Your Mind Matter.” He has been invited to speak in more than 27 coun-tries on six continents, and has a passion for exploring how people can use the latest find-ings from the fields of neuroscience and quantum physics to not only heal illness but also to enjoy a more fulfilled and happy life. As a researcher, Dr. Joe explores the science behind spontaneous remissions and how people heal themselves of chronic conditions and even terminal diseases. He’s more recently begun partnering with other scientists to perform extensive research on the ef-fects of meditation during his advanced workshops. He and his team do brain mapping with electroencephalograms (EEGs) and individual energy field testing with a gas dis-charge visualization (GDV) machine, as well as measure both heart coherence with HeartMath monitors and the energy present in the workshop environment before, during, and after events with a GDVSputnik sensor. Soon, he plans to include epigenetic testing in this research, as well.

Reaching For The Highest Possibility: a shamanic healing practice
by Wendy Ball ne of the things I love about the shamanic way is the knowing that there is always a choice of perspectives available regarding any situation and that we can move from one perspective to another with awareness choosing one or the other depending on our intent. If I need to be in touch with the details of my physical reality I move into Serpent where I can track facts and concrete details accurately and without distortion. If I am confronted by or experience the effects of intense emotion, reaction, or belief I become aware that I have entered the realm of Jaguar. I know I have a choice to step back and choose another lens through which to view my experience.
O
Many of us spend most of our time in Jaguar mind. This is the realm of our mammalian, or limbic mind. We react with fear or anger to what we find threatening. We pursue and attempt to maintain what brings us pleasure. Power and status are Jaguar concerns. Jaguar mind seeks the familiar, wants predictability, patterns our behavior, creates beliefs about ourselves, others, the world, which we use to interpret our experience. A third perspective, that of Hummingbird, interfaces with our soul reality and communicates by means of symbols and images. This is the realm of poetry and music. This is where we make meaning of what we experience. When centered in hummingbird we see through the eyes of the heart. We experience inspiration, beauty and compassion. It is from here that we can see the highest possibility for ourselves, for a situation or an event. It is truly empowering to know that we have the option of creating our reality from this place.
Scared ? Try Bach Flowers! www.NiniGridley.com fullspectrumhealing@gmail.com / 518-573-0571 “Whatever it is you are struggling with I invite you to take a moment, breathe into your heart for a few moments and ask yourself ‘what is the highest possibility?” Shamans heal by tracking for the highest possibility. They focus beyond the facts, beyond reaction and limiting belief, beyond the imprint of trauma, to what is held in wholeness and grace and can be returned to it's rightful place at the center of vision and the center of being. They are able to retrieve parts of soul energy that hold the best and the highest of oneself: fearlessness, enthusiasm, joy... They are able to retrieve lost or derailed destiny, which is ones ability to show up for life courageously and wholeheartedly, in alignment with ones Higher Self. This question: “what is the highest possibility?” is a beautiful one and can be applied to anything. Asking the question signals a willingness to step out of jaguar mind into hummingbird mind and become available to new growth and strength, to beauty, to sweetness. Whatever it is you are struggling with I invite you to take a moment, breathe into your heart for a few moments and ask yourself this question. Notice a shift in your energy? Notice the sticky magnetic hold of fear or whatever limiting belief is holding you prisoner. Notice how you are released into a lighter more expansive place within yourself? This is where your creative imagination, if you allow it, may begin to paint a picture of what would bring you to a better place, and even show you the steps. Many Americans are finding themselves over a threshold of what is tolerable. Our collective reality is deeply stressful, deeply troubling. This truly is a time to ask: What is the highest possibility, now, as Americans? I see a groundswell of push through qualities of courage, speaking up for and service to basic human rights, determination to stay the course. As much as I find the place we're in scary, I find it deeply inspiring. I'm grateful because I know we are in a transformative fire and cannot easily go back to sleep.

Hate Diets? You’re In Luck by Suzanne Lynch id you ever lose weight, just to gain it all back, plus even more? Sound familiar? We’ve all been there. Depravation and restriction never work. That’s why most of us who go on diets, even if we lose weight, gain it back, or gain even more.
D
The depressing truth:
—Right now 100 million Americans are on a diet, and the average dieter makes 4 or 5 attempts to lose weight per year. And yet, less than one percent of these attempts are successful, even in the short term. —Our current situation is that two-thirds of Americans are obese. Come on: our cultural approach to dieting is not working.
ment is a whole different approach than a dry, restrictive, limiting, or even punishing “diet”. It’s possible to enter into an utterly fresh, supportive new relationship with food.
IMAGINE…
You listen to your body, honor it’s wisdom, and eat in a way that is satisfying, and delicious. You eat in a way that gives you plenty of non-stop energy AND makes you feel more vibrant and alive than you have in years.
It ’s totally possible!
BUT, you’ll have to learn a new framework. You might need to take small steps. And, you’ll need to dance dynamically with this new framework as you learn to actually live your new approach to nourishing yourself.
I suggest you take a radical step and refrain from “dieting” entirely—because, face it, it hasn’t worked.
It can be a long journey, but over time, taking a compassionate approach to eating and food can create lasting change, ending the dieting rollercoaster forever. Start small.
Instead, start thinking about what foods truly nourish you and help you feel fantastic. Loving yourself though better nourish-

“dieting” and begin to create the framework needed to support your nourishment:
1
Concentrate on eating fresh, seasonal and local foods. Right now, in the northeast winter, this can be a tall order. There are plenty of root vegetables, as well as squash, cabbage, and winter greens, like kale. If you eat meat it’s a great time for warming soups and stews. Favor whole foods, instead of processed food.
2
Eat an earlier, lighter, dinner to create the conditions for healthy digestion that can lead to weight loss. Lighten your evening meal up a little, and be sure to eat a satisfying mid-day meal. You don’t need to make huge changes; in the evening, if you usually eat two desserts, cut down to one. This slowly begins to create a shift.
3
Start noticing how you feel after you eat. Notice what foods give you steady energy. Does an evening meal of soup help you feel more calm and grounded? Take some time at the end of the day to notice what you ate, and how much, or how little energy you had. It’s hard to believe, but starting small, with one or more of these tips, can lead to big changes in your health, your weight and in your life. Life's too short not to feel nourished! “The quieter you become, the more you hear.”
Bo o k s To Read CALL OF THE CATS New World Library When aspiring screenwriter Andrew Bloomfield moved into a bungalow in Southern California he soon discovered that he shared the property with a large colony of feral cats — untamed, uninterested in human touch, not purring pets in waiting. But after a midnight attack by predators that decimated yet another litter of kittens, Bloomfield decided to intervene. Drawing on his time living in Asia among spiritual teachers, he takes us on the contemplative, humorous, and poignant journey of saving these cats, only to find it was they who saved him by revealing a world of meaning. WHISPERS FROM THE WILD New World Library Amelia Kinkade has brought thousands into closer contact with their beloved dogs, cats, birds, and horses. Now she shares the wonders of her recent work communicating with wild, and in some cases endangered, animals. Amelia takes readers on a rollicking ride as she visits with tigers, elephants, lions, great white sharks, black mamba snakes, whales, and bees. Traveling all over the world, Amelia reveals the inner thoughts and feelings of these extraordinary animals and shares the advice she has gleaned — words about tenderness, reconnection with nature, life after death, and the possibilities of magical awakenings inside the brains of an ever-evolving human race.

Cancer Future and the
by Deb Dittner odern medicine has developed and promotes conventional cancer treatments but at who’s expense. Allopathic medicine has suggested targeting and destroying cancer cells through chemotherapy and radiation therapy, including surgical intervention. This creates mayhem on the entire body causing the destruction of healthy cells, altering the immune system, and sabotaging the body’s total purpose in daily living. In cancer, imbalance has taken over.
M
Lifestyle plans of action in the prevention of such imbalance needs to be implemented first and foremost. Such strategies will separate the cancer cells over targeting all the cells in the body. All the while, the world contains a multitude of healing foods that fight cancer without causing any harm to the body. Cancer healing foods such as turmeric, ginger, and olive oil to name a few is just the beginning. More than likely you have in your kitchen more anti-cancer foods. The body needs to be in an alkaline state to keep cancer away. Most Americans though eat a highly acidic diet full of processed, sugar laden, Franken-foods. “Don’t eat anything your greatgrandmother wouldn’t recognize as food” says best-selling author Michael Pollan. Oh so true!! Consider adding lemons into your daily diet as lemons have a multitude of cancer-fighting ingredients such as Vitamin C, and antioxidant phytochemicals called limonoides. Studies have indicated that lemon extracts immediately kill cancer cells and suppress the scattering of cancerous tumors. This simple fruit fights cancer just as chemotherapy and radiation but without any of the horrible and toxic side effects. Lemons alkalize the body and a body in a perfectly alkalized state will not allow cancer to grow. The body functions in an optimal manner when fed an alkaline diet. Caffeine and alcohol are very acidic to the body and a part of most everyone’s diet. Now throw in stress to the mix and you have an overwhelming amount of acidity. Eliminating caffeine and alcohol will indeed help but stress in today’s society has run rampant making it nearly impossible to avoid. Balancing lifestyle strategies through yoga, exercise, meditation, breathing techniques, and so much more will improve the stress factor to help create the alkaline environment. Baking soda is another alkaline ingredient included in most kitchens. Baking soda bestows healing benefits reducing and balancing the acidity on your body. Baking soda was commonly used in great grandmother’s day when an upset stomach occurred as it balanced the acidity in the gut. Let’s put lemon and baking soda together. These two items will detoxify the body creating balance and moving toward greater alkalinity. A simple elixir of one cup pure, filtered water with the juice of one half freshly squeezed lemon, and one half teaspoon baking soda daily is an excellent way to start the day and decrease the fear of cancer related illness. Turmeric also plays a great role in cancer prevention. Turmeric has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor characteristics and considered an alternative approach in preventing cancer. Turmeric can be added to basically anything. On fruit, it provides a different kind of sweet. On quinoa or rice, it can provide a touch of heat. Another elixir of one cup pure, filtered water with the juice of one half freshly squeezed lemon, 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. turmeric, 1/2 tsp. raw honey, and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon powder can add a healthy addition to your day creating a more alkaline body.

Cultivating
Well-Being Through Mindfulness
by Melissa Wilson y career in healthcare spans over 30 years, with 23 years devoted to mental health. I spend the better part of my life privileged enough to listen to patients talk about their experiences, entrusting me with their deepest thoughts, feelings, doubts, insecurities and fears. Over the course of the last 10 years, and most recently, I’ve felt a real shift in how people relate to themselves and the world. The external pressures of society are many and tribulation is everywhere. This trend is not something that I only experience with patients, but something I hear from the healthcare providers that I collaborate with, and experience myself. In this modern world, our attention has become increasingly fragmented as we try to manage more roles, become involved in more and more activities and have constant information and distractions from modern technology. Everything just seems to be moving faster… As a result, our brains are on stress overload! As if that isn’t enough, the degree of social isolation that we experience has become greater than ever.
M
As clinicians, we are trained to assist patients with their health and well-being but healthcare providers are overshadowed by a cultural and economic shift toward increased “treatment” with pharmaceuticals, seeing more clients in a day due to productivity demands and economic sustainability, regulatory compliance with government standards, oversight from insurance companies requiring prior authorizations for medications, office visits and hospitalization, increased use of technology (such as e-prescribing, electronic records, electronic billing). With all this added pressure, it leaves more room for frustration, self-doubt, and ultimately, error. As providers, we are not encouraged to talk about our insecurities or our fears - we are expected to know the answers. Often, in our role as “provider”, we are hard on ourselves – we forget that we are human. This often leads to loss of perspective and can affect how we practice and relate to our patients. In a recent article, “Physician Burnout,” Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, MD MBA wrote about his concerns for physicians and the high rate of suicides and burnout stating, “As I think about the emotional well-being of our country, I am particularly interested in how to cultivate emotional well-being for healthcare providers. If healthcare providers aren’t well, it’s hard for them to heal the people for whom they are caring.” With all things considered, the questions I kept asking myself were, How do I continue to practice safely, ethically, and in a way that meets a patient’s needs, but allows me to feel good about my practice and is evidence-based? Are there other ways to bring balance to the mind and body besides traditional Western psychotherapeutic interventions? What could assist me and ultimately the patients I work with, find a way to become more aware on a moment to moment basis of the internal responses to the some-

times hectic, stressful external conditions in our world and still maintain some level of balance and groundedness. After researching different educational models, I decided to pursue a Certificate in Meditation and Psychotherapy from the Institute of Meditation and Psychotherapy (IMP). The training included two meditation retreats in Massachusetts with mentoring from experienced mental health/meditation practitioners and a nine-month didactic and experiential training. The program integrates Eastern philosophy and healing practices with psychotherapy… Buddhist Philosophy, mindfulness practices and insight meditation for the purpose of enhancing the therapy relationship, and overall quality of clinical interventions, with a key focus on self-awareness. I began to integrate these practices (formally and informally) into my personal and professional life, which is having a positive effect on how I relate to myself, my patients, my family and others. Through my study and experience with IMP, I believe I am finding a much-needed balance in how I practice and ultimately, finding deeper meaning in my life. My primary focus now is to share my knowledge and experience not only with patients, but with other healthcare providers. Future plans include: • Providing clinical supervision to healthcare providers interested in incorporating mindfulness and the practice of self-compassion in their lives • Offering a Mindful Parenting group to parents interested in a new awareness of the importance of their role as parents, and how to engage in a way that is more meaningful to not only our children but ourselves • Facilitating a 1/2 day workshop in the Adirondacks for those who wish to explore mindfulness practices in nature Mindfulness practice may be one of the most effective ways to improve your health, your relationships and your overall sense of well-being. If we are to relate to other’s suffering and struggles in a kind and compassionate way, we must also learn to relate to ourselves in a kind and compassionate way. Melissa Wilson is a NYS Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, who attended the University of Rochester and has been a Healthcare Practitioner for 35 years, 25 years in Mental Health. She completed a Certification Program in Mindfulness & Psychotherapy in May 2016. She currently has a private therapy practice in Glens Falls, NY and is launching a new business, BeADK for the purpose of expanding her practice to those interested in Meditation and Mindfulness practices. Dog Microbes by Kathryn Kos e all love the sense of emotional stability and unconditional love our pets bring us! Dogs make for great companions, and have been known to reduce stress and depression. However, the health benefits to owning a dog do not end there! Did you know that dogs also share their microbiome with their human family, and may be as beneficial to have around as taking a probiotic supplement?

Research supports the importance of having a balanced and healthy microbiome. Many things can influence the health of our microbes, such as cesarian birth, not being breastfed, antibiotics (especially in infancy), high processed food diet, and overuse of antibacterial products and cleaning agents. People who live in the same household tend share similar strains of microbes. Research is showing that dogs and people living together all share each other’s microbiome as well, through skin and saliva! “Dogs have more diverse microbes living on their bodies than humans do, including groups of microbes normally associated with humans, plus microbes that live in soil and water. One of the major groups of bacteria that dog owners and their pets share is Betaproteobacteria, which appear on human skin and on dog tongues.” What do dog microbes mean for our health?

Scientists found that early life exposure to dogs is protective against the development of allergies. Mice exposed to dog-associated house dust were protected against airway allergies. They found evidence that early-life exposure to dogs is protective against allergies, and dog ownership is associated with a distinct variety of house dust microbes. The researchers found that mice exposed to “dog dust” are protected. They passed an airway allergen challenge, and had a distinct microbiome high in Lactobacillus johnsonii.

“This study supports the possibility that host–environment interactions that govern allergic or infectious airway disease may be mediated, at least in part, by the impact of environmental exposures on the gastrointestinal microbiome composition and, by extension, its impact on the host immune response.” The researchers found that the microbiome living on the human skin was more similar to those of their own dog, than to other

dogs. Couples living together shared more microbes with each other, if they had a dog living with them. Dog owners in general have more microbes in common with other dog owners, than with people who don’t own dogs! Children’s total IgE levels were lower across the entire early-life period when there was prenatal indoor pet exposure. Higher IgE levels are associated with allergies and immune issues. This study supports past research, indicating presence of pets in a home during the prenatal period and during early infancy being associated with a lower prevalence of allergic sensitization and total IgE levels in middle childhood. Infants and children have immature immune systems. Being exposed to a large variety of microbes helps to develop a stronger immune system, so the child’s gut can distinguish the difference between healthy organisms and pathogenic ones. This lessens the chance of an immune related response, such as asthma and allergies. Living with a dog can help expose the child’s immature immune system to many of these beneficial organisms, giving the child a healthy start. Now if only young children had this information up their sleeve, when asking their parents for a pet dog!

The Smell of Appetite
Aroma and Essential Oils Effect Hunger Cues? Part II
Bringing Baby Home is an educational program for pregnant couples and families with children up to three years of age. It was designed and created by relationship experts, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, at The Relationship Research Institute in Seattle, Washington. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of life for babies and children by strengthening the parental relationship.
by Dr. Sarah LoBisco, ND
The Gottman’s research demonstrates that when couples become parents, there is a significant decrease in their relationship satisfaction. Further research has shown that relationship discord and conflict have a profound negative effect on the couples’ infants and toddlers. The Bringing Baby Home Program was developed in order to support families during this challenging, transitional time. Dr. Gottman’s research shows that couples who have participated in the Program experience: • A lower rate of postpartum mood disorders and depression • A decrease in relationship hostility FOR MORE • A higher level of relationship satisfaction INFORMATION AND • A decreased likelihood of divorce
REGISTRATION:
The content of the program evolved from Dr. Gottman’s 40 DianaPalmerLMFT.com years of marriage and family research and is designed to teach parents to: 518-798-9187 • Increase friendship in their relationship • Deal effectively with conflict • Keep dads involved in infant care and parenting January 14-15, • Improve the quality of parent–infant interaction • Recognize the psychological and emotional needs of their 2017 child 9AM-4:30PM • Co-Parent effectively
The Taste of Food Preference n Part I, I discussed how aroma can impact appetite, emotions, physiology, and biochemistry. Now, I want to discuss how smell and taste are related and how essential oils can use this connection to help us maintain a healthy body. (‘Tis the season to look for ways to modulate cravings, right?)
I
The health impacts of taste and how it is interrelated for survival is fascinating. For example, taste receptors in the lungs have been found to respond to bitter tastes, possibly acting as a protective mechanism for causing the vessels in the lung to dilate if poison was ingested. This would bring in more air to combat pH changes due to the toxin. Interestingly, genetics determine if we can taste certain properties of foods. Some people can taste bitter more than others due to a genetic variant. So, if you hate leafy green veggies, it could be that nature wanted your genetics to survive, as bitter is also the “taste of poison.” Or, it could mean that you were more susceptible to harm?! There have also been links between receptors on our tongue to our gut, bringing in the connection of our favorite topic, the belly bugs. One study in Flavour states: Oral sensing seems to mainly influence food discrimination and nutrient appetite, while post-oral chemosensors may relate to nutrient utilization and inhibition of appetite. The most common accepted view is that taste GPCRs are present in enteroendocrine cells among others also known as chemosensory cells.
18
Therefore, the sense of taste isn’t just influencing our food preferences and appetite, but utilization of nutrients in our bellies. This means if we can affect taste, we may impact digestion and appetite. Healing Springs I #89 / December ‘16—January ‘17

In a study with 103 patients that experienced Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, it was found that changes in appetite, taste, and smell were noted by 97, 73 and 42% of patients, respectively. This study suggests a link between all three factors and demonstrates the connection to the physiology of the gut. Aroma and Weight So, it appears that smell, and the process of sniffing itself, has some evidence of effecting appetite. Now, what about directly impacting weight? One study in Flavour with 10 individuals found that aroma impacted bite size, “Results for ten subjects (four females and six males), aged between 26 and 50 years, indicated that aroma intensity affected the size of the corresponding bite as well as that of subsequent bites. Higher aroma intensities resulted in significantly smaller sizes.” This could have a role in weight reduction. In an earlier (somewhat controversial) large study of 3193 subjects, predominately females, it was found that inhaling certain aromas three times a day when feeling hungry did result in weight loss. The researchers found several connections to success in losing pounds in relationship to sniffing smells. Specifically, subjects who used the inhalers frequently, ate 2-4 meals a day, felt bad about overeating, but did not hate themselves, lost about 5% of their body weight a month. Interestingly, other correlations of psychological and food preferences (liking chocolate) also influenced outcomes.
ously on how secondary metabolites can modulate biochemical responses, such as inflammation and blood sugar. Essential oils effect our physiology, emotions, and biochemistry. If you peer through my essential oils database (found at dr-lobisco.com), you can see all the roles essential oils have on our health and how some of these aspects were listed as factors in weight maintenance. Add this with some of the evidence of the impact of smell on appetite, and you can see where some bloggers are touting their potential for weight loss support. I’d love to see more human studies specifically using essential oils, such as the one above on smell, to see if even greater effects could be achieved. According to an interview from the Essential Oils Revolution 2 with host Dr. Eric Z, Kristen Draughon has collected many testimonials on essential oils for the use of modulating hunger and effecting weight changes. I know many of my clients feel that they are helpful in their overall programs for wellness, including the goal of supporting a healthy weight for them.

Healing the American
Shadow by Angela Kaufman “Maybe there’s a God above, but all I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you….” — Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah.
R
egardless of political views or practices, this election cycle has brought significant undercurrents to the surface. We are confronting a shifting paradigm and with it, being forced to face the Shadow on many levels. The Shadow is the aspect of ourselves which we prefer to deny. We may be unaware of it, or try to suppress it. If the Ego represents our outward personality, our “Shining Star” selves, the aspect of who we are which we gladly portray to the world, then the Shadow is the dark side of the moon. The unknown, deep, primal, irrational Self. Our modern myths carry this wisdom, exemplified in the classic Star Wars scene where Luke realizes he is linked to Darth Vader. J.K. Rowling masterfully creates the Ego/Shadow dyad by creating a link between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemoort. Thus it is often the case
that one comes to recognize their Shadow Self most easily not by looking in the mirror, but by finding one’s self in polarity with another human being. It is this polarity which exposes the shadow in relationships, individuals and when projected onto the bigger arena, cultures. Ideally, an individual accepts their Shadow aspect and harnesses this energy in powerful and creative ways. Until the Shadow has been integrated full healing will not occur. This is what we are seeing in America right now. The division and finger pointing, the propaganda, both the emotional reactivity and the denial of emotional investment are all parts of the struggle for healing. Not only are Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton embodiments of archetypal struggles which deeply trigger us all in positive ways or negative, but the entire election cycle spoke to our primal struggles as human beings. No wonder so many of us feel exhausted whether satisfied with the results or not! Trump’s knack for speaking in ways which some find offensive and others liberating made him the spokesperson for the American Shadow. He did not create the tensions prevalent in our country, although his ability to instigate deep emotional reaction on both sides (another Shadow specialty) has forced our collective wounds out into the open. Like it or not, we can now let the healing begin. It may be hard to believe that the tumultuous rollercoaster can lead to a path of healing, but the Shadow is about harnessing the power of opposing forces. The purpose of dredging up pain and “negativity” is to expose it so that it can be integrated, the energy transformed. This process is called sublimation and is vital to keeping the Shadow energy in alignment.

The danger lies not in the existence of the Shadow, but in excessive attempts to deny or suppress it. When we become out of touch with our Shadow side we can’t relate to other people. We are trying so diligently to deny our own humanness, our “negative emotions” that we become uncomfortable with the existence of these emotions. This may result in a healer who becomes incapable of connecting with clients who are going through the archetypal “Dark Night of the Soul.” Rather than providing a healing connection, the practitioner may be quick to rush into solutions rather than practicing active listening. This can be highly damaging to the client. When people claim to be “color blind” they may not realize the intention of neutralizing discrimination is also blinding them to the presence of ongoing oppression, or to the unique facets of different cultures. There is no more hiding from the division in our country, here are a few things we can do as people and healers…and yes, we are people first, then healers.
1
Get real with yourself. The emergence of the Shadow demands honesty. The veneer of optimism used to gloss over real emotions, real concerns, and real issues is wearing thin. This is not to say we must give up hope, but that we need to stop rushing to the finish line of soothing and denying the primal essence of humanity. Acknowledge, with honesty, the presence of the Shadow and then bring it into harmony with light. Create space and time for your emotions. If we don’t deal with our emotions on an individual basis, whether we feel fear for our futures, concern for the environment, or anger at injustices, we will be not only immobilized by our emotions, but run the risk of projecting our baggage onto others. Feel your feelings, honestly, sit with them, acknowledge them. We don’t need to stew in anger, fear or grief, but we can honor these feelings as part of the human experience. Stop criticizing yourself for having them and you will be amazed at how much easier it becomes to tolerate the emotions of others. Hold space for the emotional process of others. This means not having all the answers and not trying to. It means not sweeping the pains of others under the rug. Don’t assume. Yes we all know the joke about what happens when we assume, but aside from the cute spelling lesson, our assumptions keep us divided. This also means suspending judgment. What if we took the time to really hear what they are concerned about before jumping to judgment? Keep your friends close, and give your enemies a new job title. We may fall into varying ideological camps, but does this mean we must be each others’ adversaries? Why do we need to disassociate ourselves from someone who is not a carbon copy of ourselves? We have no enemies to keep close or far, only teachers who will hold the mirror to us so we can see the Shadow in ourselves. Look for common goals. Most of us really want the same things, we just differ in our beliefs as to the best way to attain our goals. Honor your Shadow. Play, rant, vent, create. After you have allowed yourself to sit with uncomfortable feelings and then harness this energy.
2
3 4 5 6 7
Denying the existence of your Shadow will not make it go away, and can actually take a toll on your self and your relationships. We will attract in others what we need to grow and we have collectively attracted situation after situation calling on us to integrate. #89 / December ‘16—January ‘17 I Healing Springs

Wellness Thru The Eyes of Beauty:
Quinn Tetterton by Diane Palma MSEd ver since I found my path as an energy healer, I continue to explore and open myself up to different healing modalities as a catalyst for awareness which in turn validates and strengthens my reiki practice. As a lifelong learner, I have found the more self-care that I give myself the better I feel, and the more I have to offer others on their journey through life, or earth walk.
from 1980’s-90’s, touching on autism and attention deficit issues, and the millennials who are the game changers for the 5th world of peace.

One of my discoveries includes an encounter with Quinn Tetterton. His intuitive readings and workshops are based on Native American selfawareness and consciousness through animals and nature. Quinn is a self-proclaimed Spirit in Motion, and stated, “all of my work is done in the higher realms.” He supports your life path working from your highest and best place. Ascension Medicine picks up where astrology and psychology fall short. Ascension is about your growth and your unlimited potential. Quinn offers the practice tools to realize and live your power of self-realization. Maslow’s theory of hierarchical needs has always intrigued me as well as the notion of self-actualizing. As a birthday present to myself, seeing my life path from a new and grounded vantage point known as Ascension Medicine appealed to me. In this session, you discover the 9 totems of your soul path for your entire life. First, he energetically prays to clear you and the space with 100% bright white light. Then he intuitively channels your spirit guides and allies and records their messages directly on to your totem spread sheet. It took about 2 hours and it was a super-informative special gift to myself. Through his intuitive readings and workshops Quinn offers tools for self-realization by connecting you to your purpose during your earth walk. Once you are living on your path you can be anything. He offers several readings and some of his workshops include: Dream Lodges, Thunder Lodges, Medicine Dancing and Electric Council Fire.
Thunder Lodges include drum meditations and the sounds of animal totems. If your life is stuck drumming changes your vibrational energy. You would drum rapidly for action or slowly for calmness to focus on the challenge that lie ahead. For example, the rhythm and movement of a snake would indicate that you would glide through a challenge with patience, and drum accordingly. Medicine Dancing: Move like your totems through channeled movement meditations. The significance of Native American animal totem dancing is that it activates every cell in your body with blessings from your animal totem teacher and the great spirit. Electric Council Fire: An Open Mic/Spirit Night; expressing story, song, and poems. Naya De Sol an intuitive channeledmusic band, is often featured. Band members include: Quinn Tetterton, Diana Domingo, Nicole Mantilla, Daniel Smith, and Ike Rodriguez. Quinn explained to me that all energy comes from your heart and while grounded he will have your heart expand when you are in a reading or meditation. Heart expansion taps into source/great spirit/unconditional love. “My readings are not for everyone only for those with heart. It only works to the extent that your heart is open. The main thing is to trust your heart. Do not take anything that I say as the truth. I feel its universal truth. You have your own choice, your own path. I am a Living Totem of messenger and bridge. Once the message is delivered do it or don’t do it, you have free will. Free will determines what you think is real on your earth walk or the earth plane.” “Focus on your gratitude’s-- this is the strongest medicine. You will find you have countless gratitude compared to only a few problems. Gratitude is your protection.” www.totemsoulpath.com

What is
Medical Qigong? by Kate Kellman edical Qigong, originally called Dao Yin, is an ancient oral tradition that only recently came from China to the West. Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) pre-dates Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which evolved after the Cultural Revolution in China in the 1950s. During the Cultural Revolution, all religion was banned in China. Buddhist Monks were forced to leave their temples, and practicing Qigong or healing arts was punishable by death. Most modern acupuncture comes from TCM while Medical Qigong is from the CCM period of oral tradition, handed down through families for thousands of years. Until recently, this was secret knowledge, and its benefits and healing effects are only now being verified by science through clinical tests and trials, both in China and the US.
M
How does Medical Qigong differ from other forms of Qigong or Tai Chi? There are many Qigong sets being taught in schools around the country. You can even follow along by watching YouTube videos. You may have heard of classes teaching “Eight Pieces of Brocade,” “Swimming Dragon,” “Five Animal Frolics,” or “Seasonal Qigong.” While these have wonderful healing elements, their focus is more on movement, just as Tai Chi is a series of movements to create a form.
throughout the system. The medical benefits are immense, strengthening the immune system, boosting energy levels, and relieving daily stress, to name a few. To my knowledge, no one else is teaching this self-empowering practice. It’s a unique offering, and I feel blessed to be able to bring it to this area. In my clinical practice, I currently offer an “Energetic Tune-Up,” for those who need a little help clearing stuck energies and managing their health. This one-hour session helps me identify energy blockages, stagnant Qi and/or deficiencies and certain pathologies. First, we go through a series of questions so I can know who you are. In Medical Qigong, each client is unique, and your energetics will change during each visit, depending on what is going on in your life. There is no OneSize-Fits-All in this practice. I’m trained to be a neutral observer in order to identify blockages and help you discover the root cause of your pathology or where you’re stuck in life. After the question portion (about 30 minutes), I’ll have you lie down on a massage table, fully clothed, and will work on you energetically to clear the blockages and strengthen the system, aiding in better Qi flow and blood circulation. Many people report feeling very relaxed after a session. This work is a partnership, and I see myself as a facilitator for your own self-healing. In Chinese Medicine, disease has two causes. One is environmental factors or post-natal Qi. This means anything you put in your body (food, drink, drugs, etc.) or on your body (perfumes, hair and skin products, etc.) or that’s a toxin in your environment (exposure to chemicals, pollutants, car fumes, etc.). The other cause of sickness is emotional and, believe it or not, this one weighs more heavily in our wellness or disease than environmental factors. There are many tools, however, to rid ourselves of toxic emotions and help us to lead a healthier, happier, and more productive lifestyle. Kate Kellman is a certified Medical Qigong Therapist (MQT) and is currently part of a three-year program in PA to become a Doctor of Medical Qigong (DMQ). She is training monthly with Dr. Ted J. Cibik, a Daoist Priest, DMQ, Chinese Physician (Zhong Yi), and Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.). Dr. Cibik is a senior student of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, a Daoist Master from the 88th generation of the Jade Purity Sect and the Complete Reality Dragon Gate School. Kate teaches classes at the Red Dragon Karate School in Ballston Spa and has a private practice in the Saratoga Springs area. To register for a class or schedule a Medical Qigong session, please contact her at 1313pmd@gmail.com or (518) 775-7798.
The Daoist Five Qigong Set that I teach in Ballston Spa (see Calendar for details) uses visualization and exercise to intentionally move Qi through a student’s body. “Qi” is often defined as life force energy permeating all of existence, including us. “Gong” is defined as movement, exercise, or practice. Through a series of purgation Qigongs, the student purposefully moves stuck energy out of their body, eliminating toxins that cause stress. (According to a recent study of medical doctors, stress in the leading factor in 80% of pathology.) Next, clean energy is added to strengthen the five yin organs. Lastly, the healthy Qi is circulated via a special meditation. Think of it like an oil change – draining the old gunky energy (like oil), then running fresh, clean energy #89 / December ‘16—January ‘17 I Healing Springs

Q
Is there an effective way to work with people having vertigo?
Chiropractor; Lynn Allison Causes of Vertigo is varied and not really understood. It can appear suddenly and be one episode or return periodically. We do know that our balance and proprioception is related to nerve impulses from the inner ear to our brain and cerebellum. Our inner ear contains fluid which stimulates tiny hairs sending information to our brain about how we are moving and standing in space. It works a little like a level, which has a bubble of air in fluid that tells you if something is straight or level to earth. There are a few things we know that can be the reason for vertigo. Sudden change in blood pressure, brain tumors, and diminished blood flow to the brain can have symptoms of vertigo. More often, 93% is related to Meniere’s disease, a combo of vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus, or Benign Positional Vertigo. It could be acute vestibular neuritis or vestibular neuritis caused from a virus in the inner ear.
Benign postural vertigo occurs from crystals forming in the inner ear fluid that alter the messages of the vestibular nerve. It is more common in women than men and middle – age to elderly occurrence. You can find a video on YouTube of the Epley Maneuver, which helps to resettle these crystals. The inner ear is indirectly related to the temporal bones and ear canal so garlic/ mullein ear drops may help with infection or inflammation. Vestibular nerve is a Cranial nerve, meaning it begins at the base of the brain and wanders to the inner ear so any structure in the path could cause a dysfunction. I experienced a week of vertigo post an upper respiratory infection and it was quite debilitating. I looked up herbs that would help and found a product by Bright Nutrition, “Inner Ear Balance” containing Indian Cockle for dizziness and motion sickness and Hemlock for the sensation of head spinning. Vitex or any immune boosters may help also. If you find anything that helps, please let me know at knotdr@juno.com. Lynn Allison, DC uses a combination of Craniosacral therapy, nutrition consultation, kinesiology and chiropractic in her 20 year practice in the Capital Region. She has a website www.knotdr.info and can be contacted at knotdr@juno.com or 518-268-9542.

being investigated by a medical or alternative practitioner, many questions need to be answered. Questions such as, recent illnesses, traumatic events (whether emotional or physical), time of day or night, position of the body or action of it, eg. rising from a seat, turning over in bed, are just a few of the areas that form the basis of where one needs to explore more deeply. Vertigo can also come from vitamin or mineral deficiencies, even hormonal irregularities or changes or blood pressure. Sometimes these uncertainties need blood work to confirm the cause. Illnesses, such as Meniers's Syndrome, ear or sinus infection, even degenerative conditions of the inner ear and the tiny bones that manage our balance need to be explored and eliminated. My colleagues here have addressed many of he relevant ways that alternative methods can alleviate the imbalance, so I will only add that my experience with using Jin Shin Jyutsu, along with homeopathy, has proven to help alleviate or even dispel the sensation. Be willing to explore even the most improbable causes, and you can and will find relief. Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin sSin Jyutsu, and spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet, whose books, Training Tracks, poems by implosion and This Thirst, are available through Amazon. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. He can reached at 518-374-5492 or through his web sight www.jeromepindell.com.
Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione Since vertigo can stem from many causes, if the experiences are frequent and debilitating, it’s prudent to first consult with a physician to see if there is an underlying medical condition. There are many homeopathic remedies that can alleviate vertigo. The right remedy will emerge only when all aspects of the experience are revealed. The first step is to clarify the nature of the experience in its totality. Vertigo is one word, but it is not one imbalance. One person’s experience of vertigo can be dramatically different from another’s. There are almost 1500 experiences or symptoms under the broad heading ”vertigo” in homeopathic literature. The experiences or symptoms that accompany vertigo encompass the mental/emotional as well as the physical symptoms. During the homeopathic interview, clients are asked to reflect on their experience and answer many questions such as; How often you experience vertigo?.......How long does each episode last?........Describe the sensations: Do you spin, or do your surroundings spin?......Is it preceded by motion sickness?.......Do you have hearing loss or vision changes?.......Is it triggered by changes in your body’s position?.......What makes it better or worse?

Unwind... let healing begin.
Lynn Allison, DC 268-9542 Craniosacral Therapy, Chiropractic Saratoga & Schenectady, NY Another client with chronic vertigo had the experience of the pavement rising and falling as if she were on a ship. This very disorienting sensation happened with no warning. As a child she lived under a totalitarian regime in constant terror for her life. Her vertigo was a defense to protect her from these very deep fears. The remedy that helped her was derived from the plant kingdom and released the profound intense personal violation she experienced in her childhood. For both clients, the experience was vertigo, but the causes were completely different as were the remedies that were used. The homeopathic remedies that resolved the vertigo were based on the whole client profile not just the vertigo. This is the beauty and power of homeopathy, unique remedies that resonate with the totality of the person. A physician friend told me that in the midst a vertigo episode, a helpful thing is to stand against a wall to help restore equilibrium. Sometimes inhaling an essential oil like Lavender or Frankincense can ease vertigo or focusing on a still point in the distance. While these are helpful suggestions, lasting results come from discovering the deeper causes of the vertigo and releasing them. Homeopathy is one approach that can effectively restore balance. Claudia Ascione, MA.MS. CH. A practitioner of the healing arts of homeopathy , spiritual counsel, hypnosis, regression and the energy balancing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. Integrating a deeply intuitive and spiritual approach to bring awareness and clarity to healing concerns, she offers private sessions in Niskayuna, Manhattan and Ardsley, NY. For more information or to schedule a session, please call (518) 372-7023.
One client had frequent bouts of vertigo which she described as spinning. She was energy sensitive, but had difficulty feeling grounded. She was very suggestible and enjoyed energy healing. A remedy from the category of noble gases helped her become more grounded and establish better boundaries and resolved her vertigo. #89 / December ‘16—January ‘17 I Healing Springs
