Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you ‘...release all desire for specific agendas, befriend nature, open our hearts to a new kind of love, and see what happens.’ It is said that winter exemplifies the art of letting go, leaves have fallen and blooms not yet active. “Let go” is often referenced, yet what does it really mean? I googled it and the lyrics to a song from “Frozen” were all that came up. For me, conditioned or true, the phrase has a painful feel of loss to it. Perhaps, it’s the word ‘go’ which sounds as though everything will take leave. I’ve come to prefer the word release. It implies an opening, a freedom. If we release that which is still appropriate for us, it doesn’t go anywhere, it is simply no longer tethered to us by invisible clinging. Back to the tree analogy. A tree releases its leaves, so that when the time is right the leaf does in fact fall, yet it typically lands just above the roots to decompose and nourish the tree’s future growth. Last night Z, my dog, and I were walking down the driveway in the dark. The road was pure ice. Z had gone running off in excitement because we were headed to the neighbor’s where her ‘bffs’ live. I heard some scuffling and thought maybe Z and slipped on ice. I continued walking and also to hear the shuffling, so I turned on my phone's flashlight and asked Z if she was ok. As the words came out of my mouth, a huge bird flew off the branch just above my head. It was slow and had food in its talons. Being that it was dark, my guess is that it was owl, which we have plenty of in the neighborhood. That said, it certainly wasn’t silent—as owls usually are, so perhaps a hawk. Either way, it brought me a great sense of honor—the kind the human world rarely does. Why? I don’t totally know the answer. It does touch a primal aspect of me that is deep and old. This facet of self is the one I hope to inspire awakening, for it knows the truth that humans are simply one part of a whole organism we call Earth. In 2011, I did a month long solo road trip. Solo meaning alone in the car, not alone the entire time traveling. I went to a conference and camped among 100s of women, having the pleasure of meeting some lovely ladies whom I’m still in contact with. While I had freeze-dried coffee to make wherever and whenever, I also went in to the coffee shop of most towns. The perfect way to get a feel for what a place is about, especially reading the bulletin boards. (Since then, I’ve had the idea of traveling the country stopping at coffee shops each day. Somehow weaving a story about the variety of people met along the way—similarities, differences and that one common thread.) Also, I met up with friends—new and old. Additionally, there were long stretches of time when I was my only company. That time was spent mostly writing, partly visiting the idea of fiction. Doing so intrigues me, yet I’m not sure of my patience and dedication to work through the large quantity of bad stories needed to reach a level of competency that feels worthy of my taste. That aside, for a week I sat and slept next to the Intercoastal Waterway, just north of Charleston, SC. This whole trip was spent sleeping outside; no tent, just out under the stars. Photo below shows where my sleeping bag sat during this stop, where upon waking I opened my eyes to witness extraordinary sunrises. During the day, I sat next to a tree that hung out over the water (also in photo) and started a story. It was about a maple that wanted, felt compelled to, find friendship with humans. This tree was always trying to woo people as they walked by on the path he lived next to. The humans never heard this tree’s whispers, too much were they in their heads. Trees don’t speak to thoughts, they speak only to hearts. After years of pushing with no reward, Tree pulled into himself, staying there for years—sad at his lack of success. Eventually, long after his discouraging release of an agenda, a woman came and sat next to him with her back against his trunk. Her heart was broken, for the man she adored had fallen in love with someone else. This woman did not hear the tree because he was currently silent, but each of their broken hearts responded to the other in their silence. The woman then started talking to herself out loud. Tree was still somewhat asleep, but with time he began to feel her presence and eventually understand her words as well. He sat quietly with her while she spilled her heart out, believing no one could hear but herself. The deeper the girl went in to her heart, the more awake Tree became, until eventually they were both aware of the communication between them. So began their long-term relationship. The actualization of two dreams took place the moment each dropped their agendas for other people. It was then that they found the relationship they longed for, though with a different species. Both hearts became full of and open to love. I had forgotten that story. Then during two workshops in January it came up unplanned. Perhaps it is time to revisit— my own writing of it, as well for us as a collective. Are not many hearts breaking in today’s modern world? Perhaps not for an unrequited love, but for the death of what we thought was real and valuable. Maybe it is best to release all desires for specific agendas, befriend nature, open our hearts to a new kind of love, and see what happens. In release,

Community Gnosis Talks We are offering a series of free public talks. The public talks offer a sample of what is covered in the on-going classes. Our classes include lecture and practice. Examples of material covered in classes include spiritual psychology to gain inner knowledge and tools to awaken our consciousness to free ourselves (ex. Plato’s allegory of the cave) and transcend life’s afflicting circumstances to reach higher levels of being. Gnostic anthropology acknowledges that the world’s mystical/religious traditions contain a golden thread of similarity and the same essential message/teaching (the pearl). The science of meditation and chakra mantralization for centering and awakening our natural but dormant faculties to receive knowledge directly from our Inner Being, etc. All of the tools and knowledge offered in the classes have the aim to reconnect with our own Inner Being (True Self) in which infinite sacred peace and light is found and all of the knowledge of the universe has always been present. We are a not-for-profit and non-sectarian educational organization.
Saratoga PLAN sponsored a workshop focused on the fundamentals of animal tracking and winter ecology led by expert naturalist, Vince Walsh. A pack of 16 winter wildlife enthusiasts explored the woods and wetlands of Greenfield’s Kawing Crow Awareness Center (KCAC). Vince encouraged the group to see differently, and observe the wind, sun, and snow pack to better interpret track evidence. This was the third in a series of events that aim to bring the public and experts together to explore the ecosystems of the Palmertown Conservation Area, a natural landscape bordered to the North by the Hudson River, with Routes 9 and 9N to the East and West. PLAN’s first event focused on active forest management to address beech bark disease and deer overbrowse in Lincoln Mountain State Forest led by DEC Forester Rich McDermott, and included a visit to ancient Black Gum trees. The second event toured winter evergreens around Mud Pond in Moreau Lake State Park under the guidance of expert naturalist, Jackie Donnelly. Future events are planned for salamander surveys and bird walks as the weather warms up in the spring. These events offer opportunities for the public to learn about areas within the Palmertown Conservation Area and to engage with expert naturalists. Vince Walsh taught the group to shift perspectives and think like the animals, and interpret the direction and speed of the animal based on the evidence left behind. KCAC teaches from experience and aims to reunite humans with nature through programs on primitive and wilderness skills, as well as cultural and natural history. Vince said that sustainable environmental change “starts with knowing what’s in your backyard, putting names to things” and hopes his center can

Satprem’s Dolphin-Healing Adventure on the Red Sea, Egypt: In 1987 I sat meditating at a beach in India, feeling suddenly touched by energies never felt before. It was intensive, friendly and unfamiliar. It forced me to open my eyes. In that moment a dolphin jumped up high and my heart jumped with it. I closed my eyes again until that strange and forceful feeling came back. I opened my eyes and again a dolphin jumped. This happened a few times and I became aware that it was no coincidence. The new feeling and the dolphin’s jump were connected. It felt like an initiation. In April 2007 I was invited to participate as meditation teacher and healer on a 10-day dolphin trip at Egypt’s Red Sea. It verified all my previous insights and experiences with dolphins and brought new surprises. In the early morning I went to meditate on the deck. As my silence sunk deeper I heard the dolphins emerging around me. The water started moving and they were chattering and jumping for some time and suddenly disappeared. They surrounded us again after a while and “invited” one by one by their nudging, to jump in and play with them. It brought plentiful joy to watch everybody’s contact and afterwards listening to their underwater stories. It was something else to be exposed to the vast sea, surrounded by a pod of 90 wild dolphins. It felt indescribably blissful, timeless and in deep oneness with the universe. There was NO room left for fear, lost-ness and loneliness, only a vastness of peaceful unity. Through a mask I watched and followed the dolphins and was at times completely encircled by them. They danced with me, whistling their dolphin call, playing hide and seek games, chasing each other, diving under me to pop up right next to me. In short, they made me feel a part of their family. Satprem’s Dolphin-Healing Adventure on the Red Sea, Egypt: There are only a few places where one can swim freely with wild dolphins and the Red Sea is one of them. June 15-22, 2017 I will offer the next Dolphin-Healing Adventure. Everyone who commits to the Self is welcome. There will be different dates available. Up to 18 people per trip will share 7 days of silence, laughter and exchanges on a yard. Together we will meditate, swim and snorkel with dolphins in their own living environment, have healing circles and I will also give “whole-istic” healing sessions to those who want and need it. Every day will be spent at the sea, with fresh air blowing in your face, swimming, reading, snorkeling, dancing, relaxing and connecting to yourself and nature. There will be two people sharing an en-suite cabin. Delicious vegetarian food will be cooked by 2 chefs. Alcohol and cigarettes are not welcome and I promise, you will not miss them. There is only a limited space so book in time! Fat Is In - Sugar Is Out obesity, heart disease and diabetes rates have not decreased by avoiding fats but instead have increased and the cause is chronic systemic inflammation which is created by sweetener consumption. Amazing, isn't it?
by Lynn Allison, DC t he 2015 Dietary Guidelines are out, very late, mostly because there is a huge debate over the radical change in recommendations. Dietary Guidelines are released every 5 years after a committee reviews studies related to health concerns and dietary patterns. From here comes the Food Pyramid and Nutrition Facts Labels and what food manufacturers push as dietary benefits of their foods.
T
Most average Americans never notice their guidelines. One of the reasons is they haven’t changed much in the last 30 years. They are the reason we have been taught to avoid fat at all costs. Fat, especially saturated fat, has been demonized since the 70s. Some people completely eliminated all fat from their diet and got really sick. Then it was edited to “healthy” fats versus saturated fats. We created "trans" fats found in margarines, shortenings which were used readily in processed, prepared foods tooting the horn that they were made from “healthy fats” so good for us. Trans fat were worse for us than saturated fats and are now banned from diets. We were taught that obesity was from eating fat and we still avoid fat of any kind if we can. So back to Dietary Guidelines of 2015, they have stated that fat is not the demon, “added sugar” is to be eliminated now. Research over 30 years shows that our
And here’s the biggest catch, by eliminating the fat from foods, the manufacturers have increased the sweetening of the food so it tastes good. If we left foods well enough alone, we would be eating less sweeteners now. Fat tells our brain we have eaten enough, satiety, and sweeteners light up the addiction part of our brain so we have a hard time knowing when we have eaten enough but also craves sugar. The inflammation that sugar creates in our whole body also inflames the hypothalamus of the brain where hunger control is located. Most Americans eat 22 tsp of sweeteners, which is 88 gms and the Dietary Guideline recommends less than 25 gms a day. Can you cheat with artificial sweeteners? No, they alter the intestinal flora negatively which makes us fatter. Are “natural” sweeteners superior to white sugar in this? No, the only answer is eliminate sweets for at least 30 days. You must look for the hidden sweetener names on labels. It is in most processed , prepared foods. After 30 days and your liver has a chance to defat itself from the constant bombardment of sweets and inflammation starts to calm down in your body, sweeteners should be special occasion only - holiday, birthdays, etc. - only 2-3 times a year. Fruit is your sweetener now and only in its natural form. As my grandma said; “if you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you aren’t hungry.” And eat fat—not bacon, but avocados, nuts, some butter. Lynn Allison, DC uses a combination of Craniosacral therapy, nutrition consultation, kinesiology and chiropractic in her 20 year practice in the Capital Region. An Exploration of Animal Sentience by Matthew Collins “The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?” – Jeremy Bentham
A
s the organizer of an animal rights group in Glens Falls, and considering myself an outspoken sentience rights advocate, I frequently come across objections to pain in animals. Actually, people rarely assert that animals don’t feel any pain, but that they don’t feel pain in quite the same way that humans feel. They defend this view by arguing that humans alone possess some quality or qualities which mark them as the exclusive experiencers of pain! The qualities most often invoked in defense of this view are intelligence, language, or consciousness. While one may correctly argue that the subjective experience of being alive is different
for humans, you can make this case for any species (as each species is unique and undoubtedly experiences the world in its own special way). The notion that humans possess specific traits which enable only them to suffer and no other species is clearly erroneous. Pain evolved as a signaling mechanism to warn biological beings that certain stimuli are injurious to their health; there is good reason for animals to have evolved an avoidance mechanism like this, and it would be absurd to think this only arose in our species. People often confidently assert that human beings suffer. Yet, we can never truly know what it is like to be any another conscious being at all, including humans! The philosopher Thomas Nagel explicated this idea in his now famous 1974 article “What is it like to be a Bat?” , where he argued that the subjective experience, or ‘what-it’s-likeness’ of a conscious being is inaccessible to direct objective observation. He says this is the case because anytime you try to imagine what it is like to be another person

Pray! Be silent! Be! “The quieter you become, the more you hear.” you are simply imagining what it is like to be you as that other person! So one cannot even know whether another human is able to experience pain! We must use an argument by analogy to conclude that another person (or animal) suffers. For example, if you decide to try and find out if another person suffers or not, and you kick that person in the shins (please do not!), they may cry out and hold their ankle. But how do we know they aren’t just acting? Do you experience their pain directly? A computer can be programmed to say “ow” when it is kicked, but with no inner experience of pain at all. So using this argument by analogy, there are ways to infer that non-human animals feel pain. There are several indicators of pain in non-human species. A couple of these are 1) physiological changes to noxious stimuli, and 2) avoidance learning. Furthermore, if you choose a uniquely human trait to qualify as suffering-worthy, then you invariably exclude certain segments of the human population, because not all humans possess these traits. If you choose language as the marker of whether a being can suffer, you are suggesting that non-verbal individuals do not suffer, including infant humans (this is an untenable position). If you choose intelligence as the line in the sand then you are saying something abhorrent about the moral worth of those with lower intelligence, including the intellectually disabled. If you

pick consciousness, well, we’ve already established that this is impossible to ascertain in any being, including humans. I argue that it is suffering alone that counts. These other qualities confuse the situation; what matters is not whether or not a being can converse about the weather, or recite Shakespeare—but whether a being can experience pain. Pain is indicated by observation of behavior, and physiological measurement. We can observe these phenomena in animals and draw the strong conclusion that animals do indeed suffer. But even if it were doubtful whether, say, a cat can feel pain; wouldn’t it be better to play it safe? I think that as the most intelligent species on the planet, we have a duty to protect our most vulnerable creatures. This means treating animal sentience seriously, with respect and compassion. Matthew Collins is a Direct Support Professional working at a group home for individuals with developmental disabilities in Queensbury, NY. He is the organizer of a meditation group and a sentience rights group in Glens Falls. He has recently become interested in both the bioethical abolitionist and effective altruist movements, both of which seek to abolish or minimize suffering in all sentience. #90 February—March, 2017 I Healing Springs

Healing Springs I #90 February—March, 2017
by Kate Kellman, MQT ur world is one of duality – good and bad, dark and light. So often, we hear of shadow work, delving into our own darkness, accepting ourselves just as we are with all our faults and insecurities. A worthy undertaking if one has never ventured there. Hiding from our whole self, living in a world of denial where we only want to think happy thoughts – seeing our lives as perfect and ignoring the difficulties – often has a price. One day, we wake up to find our delusions falling apart as negative events occur to re-balance our lives – something we have all faced.
O
So, how can we achieve equilibrium then? How can we enjoy a happy, fulfilling life and stash the rose-colored glasses into the glovebox at the same time? Sometimes, a compromise is called for. Suppressing emotions is not the answer. According to Chinese Medicine (my own field of study), blocking emotions can have serious repercussions on our health. Our emotions are what make us human. They are a rich treasure trove of feeling that connect us to our Shen or Spirit. When we delve into an honest exploration of emotion, we can ride those feelings into a deeper level of understanding about our hidden desires, fears and potentials. Too often, however, we get lost in those emotions. Our shadow self seems to loom over us like a giant Darth Vader, ready to pounce, taunting us with our insecurities and weaknesses. Sometimes, we dive down into the deepest depths of despair, a tough place to dwell and often hard to dig our way out of. Life borders on depression, a dark night of the soul. Most people totter precariously on the ridge between hopes and dreams and disillusion or a grave disappointment with life. Often, we are afraid of our own highest potential, sabotaging ourselves each time a ray of light enters our world. To be happy in our society is too often frowned upon because it only serves to highlight the suffering and inadequacies we all face. What is the answer then? How can we honor our emotions and all that they stand for without getting caught in the trap of doom and negativity that always looms so close beside us, waiting for an audience? How can we reach for our highest potential and envelop the feelings of hope, love, joy and true meaning while still living in the light of reality?
“Once we discover our root, shining a light into the darkest corner of our being, we can set about nurturing it.....” Perhaps the answer lies in an understanding of our true nature. Think about it…. Who were you as a child when the world was still innocent, before any negative influence entered your life? Some people might need to go far back in their memories because life can be harsh at times, even in utero. Yet, we all have those memories somewhere inside us. We all know the feeling of innocence, of hope, of unlimited potential in the heart of our being. It may be buried beneath layers of social conditioning, years of protective psychological mechanisms, of a lifetime of abuse. Deep down, beneath all of that, however, lies our true nature. It only takes a moment to find it. Just sit in stillness and it will come. In Chinese Medicine, this is called our Chong Mai, and it is the place of miracles where all true healing occurs. Our Chong Mai is our original blueprint for this lifetime, a “place” we all have access to through looking inward with conscious intent. Once we discover our root, shining a light into the darkest corner of our being, we can set about nurturing it . . . secretly, quietly . . . for it is ours and only ours to cherish. Then, as it stems and blooms from the subsoil of our gritty-ness, we can water it with kindness to ourselves and others. When we let the sun shine within our world – all those little things we find beautiful or nurturing to our soul – we allow our personal flower to germinate into something fulfilling in our lives. Caring for ourselves and others, always, with sensitivity, respect and understanding, we realize that everyone harbors this same seed of potential. No matter what life deals you, no matter how dark the days have become, it is always there for the asking. Just know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that a beautiful, inextinguishable light shines deep within. We are that spark in all its glory. by Melissa Carter, Reiki Practitioner s humans we are constantly going and moving through this thing called life. As technology increases, so does our need as people, to move, think, act and get results quicker. Our bodies, minds and spirits are moving at more fast-paced speeds. In this world today, and living highdemand lives; family, work, and all other responsibilities, it's important to stop for a moment, re-center within yourself, and allow your mind, body and spirit to rejuvenate.
called “chakras.” The practitioner will use light touch and/or hold their hands above the energy points. You may feel a warm sensation or tingling. Each person may have a different experience. Some may or may not feel a physical sensation. Some people experience emotional feelings as well. Essential oils, also correlate with chakras and Reiki and can be used in a session. Reiki touches on your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, all in a positive way. You will leave the session feeling relaxed and with a sense of tranquility.
This is how I discovered Reiki. I was working two jobs and going through a stressful personal time and I began to experience severe anxiety and panic attacks. I knew I had to make life changes, but I wanted to take a natural approach and this is when I discovered Reiki. I first began sessions, then became a practitioner.
Why is self-wellness so important? Everything begins with our own wellness. Whether it be our personal or professional lives, our wellness contributes to our daily outlook and our emotional and physical well-being. Reiki contributes to a more peaceful life and our wellness contributes to a happier, more productive life. Whether you incorporate Reiki, mediation or anything that gets you back to your center, as well as things that you love, this will contribute to your overall wellness.

Reiki, (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese healing art, meaning universal life force energy. Reiki balances energy flow to reduce negative energy and toxins and promotes positive energy flow. Reiki promotes healing, reduces stress and anxiety, reduces side effects of medication, improves sleep, focus and concentration and has a multitude of benefits. Reiki is unique to each person. In Reiki, it is believed that if our life energy is balanced or flowing well, our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being will be in a better state. Reiki restores the balance of your energy flow which sometimes can be “blocked,” if we are going through physical or emotional stresses. Once the “blockages” and toxins are released, our energy can flow properly. Reiki energy travels to where it needs to go in the body. Reiki does not substitute for medical attention, however it can work in conjunction with medical services. Many hospitals now offer this service for patients going through treatments and to help relieve side effects, and it's sometimes offered, pre and post surgeries. People going through cancer and receiving radiation and chemotherapy, have found relief, from this practice. Even if you are not going through any type of physical or emotional stresses, it is a great technique to promote relaxation and keep your energy balanced for your overall well-being. During a session, the practitioner focuses on energy points, 14 Healing Springs I #90 February—March, 2017
In addition, to individuals seeking a relaxation session, Reiki can also be offered to new parents and babies, veterans/law enforcement and people suffering from trauma, individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues as well as corporate wellness programs.
In the Western world, Reiki is becoming more mainstream. Living in NY, many people believe this is a West Coast thing. It's an EVERYONE thing. It helped me through a stressful, anxious time, and that is why I have a passion to offer it to others. I look at this as routine maintenance. The more you receive Reiki, the more you will feel consistently balanced. The ripple effects of Reiki, are a great experience and contribute to a beautifully balanced life! The Critic’s Revolving Door:
What Goes Out Must Go In by Mark Coleman, An Excerpt from Make Peace with Your Mind Many of us are well acquainted with our “Inner Critic.” It is the voice that makes us second-guess our every step by saying “not enough,” “not good enough,” or sometimes “too much.” At times the Inner Critic can be so strong that it feels invincible, but bestselling author and renowned meditation teacher Mark Coleman promises that it is not in his new book Make Peace with Your Mind: How Mindfulness and Compassion Can Free You from Your Inner Critic. We hope you’ll enjoy this short excerpt.
S
ome years ago I was teaching a course in a hospital in Sheffield, England. There was a psychiatrist in the course who was in his fifties and who, although cordial on the surface, could be quite vicious in his attacks on others in the group. Out of the blue, he would issue scathing judgments about their errors. What was challenging for his colleagues was that they could never be sure when to expect one of his barbed attacks. Later I came to work with him, in a coaching format. I discovered his life was tormented by his own vicious attacks on himself. Growing up in a critical family, he felt that he never lived up to their expectations. His father — ironically, a judge in a local court — had hoped his son would follow him into law. To his disappointment, his son did not, and he did not hide his disdain for his son’s career choice. As a consequence, the psychiatrist had internalized this culture of judgment and was unforgiving of even the slightest error in himself or others. He lived his life under the oppressive reach of the critic’s hand. It had turned his life into a narrow hell where nothing he did was right, no matter how successful he was in medicine. What he didn’t see was how he turned that same critique toward everyone around him, literally scaring them away. It was no wonder he felt sad and lonely. Have you ever wondered what it’s like at home for the most judgmental person you know at the office? Rest assured it wouldn’t be all quiet. For the most part, what goes out goes in; if someone is outwardly critical, they are most likely also turning the screw on themselves when there is no one else around to take aim at.

What would it be like for you to look at the world, and the people in it, with more of a focus on the light, on what is positive and right? How would that change your state of mind? Perhaps it would lead you to see yourself in the same way — not as someone with a list of faults as long as your arm, but as someone who has strengths, talents, gifts, and a good heart. However, people do tend to lean more in one direction than the other — either outward or inward — when judging. Take a look at your own mind and see if that is so. Do you tend to judge yourself or others more, or is it about even? Or do the judgments just go whichever way the critic is looking? It is important to understand your mental habits because the more you practice a habit, the more entrenched it becomes. If your habit is to judge (whether internally or externally), guess what becomes the norm? The key point here is that we do not want to strengthen the critic’s fundamentally problematic point of view. Unlike a person exercising discernment, the critic attacks whoever falls under its scrutiny. That is a terrible fate to befall anyone. It is most dire when done to oneself, which is where the guillotine will inevitably fall if we keep up the habit of judging others.

So how do you interrupt this habit? The primary line of defense is simply to notice that it’s there. When seeing this habit with mindful awareness, we can note it for what it is — merely thoughts, and points of view, that are not necessarily true. We can let go of the thoughts and shift our attention to something else. An effective counterpoint to habitual negative fixation is to focus on the positive. To look for what is right or wholesome in others or oneself and to focus on those good qualities. That doesn’t mean we throw out discernment; it just means we don’t give preference to the negative. It is remarkable how that small shift can begin to bring more light into your inner and outer world. SOUL
Retrieval bringing your light back in by Wendy Ball here is an understanding among shamanic healers and energy workers in general that traumatic experiences that have not been processed or integrated drain energy. Think of low energy, depressed states. Think of dulled vision. One can feel half dead, and unfortunately, this is the way many people experience themselves and their lives.

It is a common experience among those who have experienced a healing event, by whatever means, that they come out of it seeing the world in a different way. Colors become vibrant. They feel more present, more alive.

So what is happening here? From a shamanic point of view, as I understand it through the teachings of Alberto Villoldo, part of our soul's energy flees during experiences of trauma, or simply leaves when there is nothing in our lives to nourish and provide space for this energy, and retreats to a place where it is “held in wholeness and grace.” This energy could be the innocent joy and exuberance of youth. It could be hope, trust, wisdom, courage. It could be creativity, spontaneity—any of those energetic qualities that enliven us. One implication of this approach to soul retrieval is that we need to be willing to release the negative energy of fear, mistrust, etc. that took the place of our life-affirming energy, so that there can be room for qualities such as trust and playfulness, or self-empowerment, to once again take their rightful place within. One of my favorite forms of shamanic energy healing is called Destiny Retrieval. One way of doing this involves a guided journey to the upper world where one can access one’s luminous or higher Self, that part of us that never leaves Home. This Self knows why we chose to take on a human life at this time. It knows our gifts. It can be a life changing and deeply moving experience to connect with this Self, to bathe in it’s love and to receive it’s wisdom in response to our issues, to re-connect with our highest possibility. In Soul Retrieval we speak of soul parts. Indeed, we perceive energy in symbolic terms that may come to us as an image of a child or a warrior or whatever expresses the type of energy that is ready to return. I am aware that some people think of soul parts in

From my perspective the energetic process of Soul Retrieval is not about healing dissociation. It does no justice to chronic trauma survivors who have committed to the long and arduous process of identifying, healing and re-integrating dissociated parts to suggest that this complex work could be done in a session or two. Also, 4 Winds trained shamanic healers do not in general use Soul Retrieval as a stand alone intervention. They begin with Illumination, which provides an energetic foundation for various kinds of Extraction which in turn creates a readiness for Soul Retrieval. Shamanic Healing is such that one experience can be life-changing; or it may be a healing process in which layer after layer emerges and readiness to release heavy energy increases along with ability to anchor healthy energy. Soul Retrieval heightens awareness of the opportunity to reclaim lost energy and power. It provides a context in which
wounding and neglect can be honored, and provides a structure for anchoring what is retrieved in a fully embodied way. It is a powerful energetic tool that can catalyze our ability to show up more fully, for ourselves and for the collective. Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione Nutritional therapies and gut microbiome evaluation are two important cornerstones in helping people suffering with IBS and are best pursued through medical/nutritional avenues. While some aspects of IBS are triggered by external factors like diet there is also a compelling mental/emotional component to the syndrome. This imbalance can have deeper roots in the psyche. A homeopathic view can help identify these deeper underlying causes and through the careful selection of a homeopathic remedy, the movement towards health can begin. Even in situations of long standing autoimmune imbalance such as in Crohn’s syndrome, I’ve seen the deeper cause as emotional stress. Recently I saw a woman who had a Crohn’s diagnosis for more than 20 years. She was under the care of a physician and had been on many immune suppressive drugs. During our consultation she revealed that she had just broken her engagement. This was a devastating loss. As a result of this experience, she was

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison Irritable Bowel Syndrome seems to be on the increase and no one is sure why. There is a great deal of information on constipation but when you venture into the world where your bowels alternate with no rhythm or reason between constipation and diarrhea, the medical world seems stumped and can treat the symptoms but end in sight. Genetic research has been done with IBS and non IBS people and it is known there is a genetic predisposition to IBS for some. Something in the environment triggers it and that is where most interest goes. Genetic studies have been done of the intestinal microbiome ( community of microorganisms co-existing within and without our bodies) of IBS and non IBS people. It was discovered there is differences in the diversity of intestinal flora in IBS sufferers than the control group. The differences showed that IBS sufferers had a lowered diversity of bacteria which will affect their vitamin and amino acid synthesis.
So what this means is they had a lower number of "friendly" bacteria (dysbiosis) and an increase in bacteria that would cause inflammation in the intestines. Inflammation seems to be a primary issue in IBS, creating cramping, bloating, gas and a faster transit of foods in intestines. A faster transit alone would drastically alter digestion and absorption of nutrients. The bowels then try to compensate with constipation. It seems a strong focus on correcting dysbiosis is essential. Naturally fermented foods are readily available now, not just yogurt and probiotics, and the best manner to introduce the "friendly" bacteria and should be consumed daily. All sweeteners should be eliminated from the diet, even the "organic and natural" sweeteners. Fruit in its natural form is the sweet. Artificial sweeteners cannot be substituted for sweets because it is now known that the artificial sweeteners alter the intestinal flora negatively. Fiber often is avoided by IBS people but is needed to feed the bacteria in the gut. The compounds in raw aloe vera is excellent for soothing the intestinal walls as well as providing an easy form of fiber. A testing for developed food sensitivities should be done and these foods eliminated from the diet completely as well as the derivatives for the food. For example, I have a corn sensitivity which means no corn, popcorn, corn syrups, corn flour, masa, flavoring or additives derived from corn. Corn sensitivity was created because the mucosal wall of the intestines have been weakened from a antibiotics during a surgery allowing corn to pass into the bloodstream and be tagged by immune system as "foreign bodies" causing more inflammation. My elimination of it must be until my microbiome is rebalanced. This may take a while. While this is happening, one needs a multivitamin/mineral. Curcumin and Boswellia have been shown effective as medications in decreasing inflammation in IBS sufferers. Acupuncture is as effective as conventional treatments as was homeopathy. They will help the body return to a balanced response for elimination. If you find anything that helps, please let me know at knotdr@juno.com. Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell The short answer is yes. The real question is how much energy and patience are needed for alternative healing modalities to be proven effective. Conventional medicine may be able to give moderate relief, but palliating such a condition takes multiple modalities and a willingness to explore the many connections in the complex relationship between the body and the mind/ emotions. . Qi Gong Is a Life Changer by Cara Anaam s I write this in late October, snow is beginning to cover the finally green grass in my backyard, the state troopers are clearing the first jackknifed tractor trailer of the season on the highway 30 ft from my front door, and my wet boots are a reminder of the last ripe raspberries I plucked just a few minutes ago from the once-laden bushes along the fence. Last week it was in the 60’s, but today winter is clearly announcing its imminent arrival. Am I ready?
Today, I no longer need the shots, and I don’t feel the dread of the coming cold that I remember often feeling in years past or the panic at what I still had to do outdoors as the temperatures dropped. For this change I give credit to the weekly Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes in which I’m participating at The Tai Chi Center on Phila Street in Saratoga. The movement helps, but the Daoist meditation practices and getting to know my body from the inside out, so to speak, have been equally important.
Not completely. By the front door, at least 200 tulip, daffodil, camassia and allium bulbs are sorted, sort of, and waiting to be planted in the backyard. There are already an equal number tucked into the front beds, and I know I have a little while yet before all have to be in the ground. Planting as the snow falls just before Thanksgiving has not been an unusual occurrence in my gardening life. Nor, for many years were the resultant hip, knee and back pains that finally sent me hobbling to the orthopedist for cortisone shots five years ago.
What Is Qi Gong?
A
One morning, Mark Tolstrup introduced an exercise from the Seasonal Qi Gong to our Tai Chi class as part of the warmups we do each class before starting the form. The idea of a set of specific exercises to prepare for the change of seasons intrigued me and made me want to learn more. The concept intuitively made sense, but now, after a couple of years of study, I realize I’m only just beginning to peel back the layers of possibility Qi Gong offers.

Saratoga Springs & Cambridge khayden@nycap.rr.com • 518-859-0842 www.haydenhealing.com Qi Gong is the ancient Chinese art of working with energy. As a Reiki Master and Flower Essence Practitioner, I am predisposed to accept the fact that we can use mind and body, spirit and emotions to move energy in ways that promote healing in ourselves and others. In Qi Gong, I encounter a complex healing system, established millennia ago in China that was once dismissed by Western medicine but that today is being acknowledged as having accurately described many concepts that are only now being confirmed in the West. (For a very readable discussion of how the two systems differ but talk of the same realities, see The Spark in the Machine: How the Science of Acupuncture Explains the Mysteries of Western Medicine by Dr. Daniel Keown, 2014.) The Daoist tradition sees Qi Gong, the work with energy, as having three main branches: Medical Qi Gong; Martial Arts Qi Gong; and Spiritual Qi Gong. Over the past three years, I have participated in classes at the Center that enabled me to experience practices from each branch and to begin to get a feeling for how they work separately and as a system. All aim for the coordination of mind, body and spirit in the movement of energy.
Example of a Qi Gong Set Throughout the year, practices from one Qi Gong set have become part of my wind-down routine at the end of most days. I experience a peacefulness grounded in my own body that enables me to quickly drift off and sleep soundly. Centuries ago, Daoists developed this set with exercises appropriate for each of the five seasons they observed annually: winter, spring, early summer, late summer, and fall. This aptly named Seasonal Qi Gong is a component of Medical Qi Gong and assists the practitioner in living a healthy and balanced life in a changing external and internal environment. Through it, I am becoming aware of the marvel that is my body - organs, energies, functions - and how the healthy whole is the composite of many balanced energetic relationships. Lots more here for me to learn. In the Seasonal Qi Gong cycle, a series of practices help make the energetic transition from fall to winter, increasing the store of
energy in the kidneys, which are the organs associated with winter, to take a practitioner through the season in a state of health and well being. The focused movements are generally very simple, repeated a number of times, and surrounded by periods of meditation that have the purpose of situating oneself deeply in the present moment both in one’s body and the universe while focusing on the movement of specific energies. (Or at least that is my understanding at this point.)
Some Personal Reflections on Qi Gong For me, practicing regularly has made made me more aware of my posture and balance, the particular seasonal energies and my physical and emotional responses to them. I’ve always reacted to the coming of winter with a deep desire to hibernate and have finally come to a peaceful acceptance that I do need more sleep, more quiet during this time of sorting, of letting go of what I no longer need to carry into the new year. This can be a scary process at times so Qi Gong practice helps me to be gentle with myself. As my dogs and friends recognize, doing Qi Gong has given me tools for attaining greater balance in my emotional life in what had been a difficult season for me. Qi Gong is work; practice is essential. But, in my experience, it is well worth the effort. I’ve only been studying for a couple of years, but others have been in the class for over two decades, and still others are just beginning. The practice enriches our lives at whatever level of understanding we have and I am very grateful to be part of this extraordinary class. Dr. Sarah LoBisco, ND nly a few months of snowy weather remain for us Northeasterners. As we take advantage of the hours left for our favorite winter activities, or, countdown the days left of snow shoveling, inevitably Spring will come. The sun will be shining on green grass once again!

With the spring buds emerging and the weather turning warmer, more opportunities to purchase fresh fruits and veggies will be presented. One of the most famous fruits that is known for its ability to make the breakfast bowl a healthy place is grapefruit. It has been enjoyed (or tolerated) by many health seekers throughout time for many very good reasons. This citrus delight is loaded with vitamin C and vitamin A (carotenoid form) and is a good source of other nutrients including pantothenic acid, copper, potassium, biotin, and vitamin B1. Grapefruit is also high in antioxidants, contains fiber, and is power-packed with beneficial phytonutrients (including liminoids and lycopene). Grapefruit has been associated with many health gains including lowering LDL cholesterol, prevention of cancer and kidney stones, DNA repair and more! Yet production and price for our beloved morning companion is down! Why?

The Darker Side of Grapefruit Recently, the reputation of grapefruit has been tainted. Researchers have discovered that this fruit and its juice contains a chemical (furanocoumarins) known to interact with many medications which can cause dangerously high levels of some drugs to ensue.

www.healingspringsjournal.com or call 518.332.6581 to place your ad This can result in very dangerous side effects for some unknowing, newly crowned, health enthusiast who slugs down a glass of grapefruit juice with the usual morning chemical cocktail. In fact, a 2012 review of the Canadian pharmaceutical market estimated more than 85 drugs can potentially interact with compounds found in whole grapefruit, grapefruit juice, or grapefruit concentrate and 43 of them could cause serious consequences. Furthermore, one health expert commenting on this study explained to CBS that drinking one glass of grapefruit juice with one statin pill is similar in potency to taking twenty pills! Not good. Even creepier, the effects of the grapefruit juice seem to increase over time with some medicines. This means, you could have sipped on grapefruit juice in the morning and its kryptonite power continues to grow and to have an additive adverse effect on some of your drug levels as the clock clicks away. Doubly not good.
Some key points of this landmark “Forbidden Fruit” study include: • Drugs that interact with grapefruit have all of the following characteristics: they are administered orally, they have very low to intermediate absolute bioavailability, and they are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme (CYP3A4). • All sources of grapefruit and certain related citrus fruits can irreversibly inhibit CYP3A4 in the gastrointestinal tract; to prevent this interaction, affected drugs should not be consumed with any of these fruits during the treatment period, or noninteracting alternative medications should be prescribed. • Older patients have the greatest possibility of ingesting grape-

439-7644 fruit and interacting medications and are the most vulnerable to the adverse clinical consequences. You can download this article at: http://www.cmaj.ca/content/early/2012/11/26/cmaj.120951. I advise anyone on medication consider reading the full article. Starting on page 4, it lists the drugs that can interact with grapefruit fruit, juice, and concentrate. For the really geeky, if you’ve done a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) test to determine your CYP3A4 genetic profile, you can further determine how genetically vulnerable you are to this interaction. In the next article, I will discuss how grapefruit oil is different from the fruit and it contains different constituents, making this interaction very unlikely.
