Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer the world is a healthy, whole you In celebration of our 15 years together as a community, The Healing Springs Journal is throwing an Appreciation Celebration on June 24th. We will gather at the beautiful AMP Galleries in the lower level of the Saratoga Marketplace, 454 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. From 7-8:30 we will be mingle together—readers, writers and advertisers. By 8:30, we will get our dance on with DJ / Rhythm Driven Coalition and guests DJs Jennifer Haley and Properly Chilled. Looking forward to seeing you there. My love of all things wellness and healing began at a young age. I chose to attend my first ‘self-improvement’ weekend workshop just after graduating college. Without stating how many years ago that was, I’ll just say more than half my life has passed since. Even as a child, I often preferred sitting in trees pondering life rather than playing with other children. Contemplation has never been something I do occasionally, or when there’s a problem, instead it’s a way of life. The early workshops increased my understanding that everyone is going through something. Everyone. As well, it quickly became clear that workshops were for sharing knowledge and perhaps even more about the feeling experienced during the time together in a group. That may be a sense of belonging, joy, peace or any variety of sensations that seem to be missing from our regular life. I’ve heard over and over from people who are inspired at workshops, then find it hard to maintain that feeling once home. Simply put, a weekend is not a lifetime of practice. It’s similar to an exercise class. The first one is often inspiring because it feels great, was tons of fun, and a joy to be around new people. Yet, one class does not actually change your body. You may go to a few more still inspired by the newness. Then old habits start to creep up again, bringing back the energetic feelings we are used to; heaviness, stress, chaos, worry or fill in the blank. This is neither a sign of failure or weakness; it is the way cycles go. Real change may be closer to permanent if we anticipate this cycle. As with exercise programs, each time we come back—while inspired and while not—the more ingrained the behaviors become. The practice is no longer a separate activity we strive to continue, but an integrated part of our life. Our spirituality, for instance, is not something we only play with in meditation, or during a workshop, it is a constant way of experiencing. For a new project, I have been reading my journals from 2006. One entry requests “Great Spirit, another thing I ask is for You and the many spirits that surround me to bless every being involved in The Healing Springs Journal—the readers, writers, and advertisers. Please share Your Grace with each person that touches any issue of HSJ. Show me how to best use the journal as an effective vehicle for wholeness. I have learned through it how to get my personality/ego out of the way. I feel now a time to create greater waves of healing both in this region as well as around the world.” Writing that was a private matter between“Great Spirit” and me on 10/31/06. At that time, I would have found sharing it an act of spiritual ego. Today, more than ten years later, I repeat it to let you know the basis of these pages—for there have been 15 years of similar prayers for you. On the day of writing this particular entry, my best horse friend at the time was being put to his final rest. My heart was breaking from saying goodbye to him. Yet, knowing that I was serving this community by providing empowered choices to the readers bellied the deep sorrow. This can illustrate the reciprocal nature of life. While what we do for others comes back to us, it may not be directly from the same person with whom we interacted. Also, rather than coming from another person, the ‘return’ may simply be in our own behavior. As with the feeling sense experienced during workshops, our motives or the energy we feel around our actions are what keeps coming around. We spread whatever that feeling is through the reciprocity some call karma. For this reason it is important to be ever mindful of why you are doing what you’re doing. Do you find yourself in the energy of obligation? Joy? Love? Anger? Grace? Fear? That question sounds black and white— the answer typically is not. Sometimes we are obligated to do something, yet because it is for a daughter (mother, father, friend....) we are in the energy of love. That said, there are often underlying ‘feelings’ ruling our behaviors. Let us consciously align them with what we want out in the world and what we would like repeatedly returning to us. Doing so may be considered a lifelong experiment in mindfulness, as well as our greatest contribution to the world. Remember June 24th is the 15 Year Appreciation Celebration. Let’s gather not for improving ourselves or learning anything new, but simply to enjoy the company of our community beyond the pages of The Healing Springs Journal.

Our

Community New Offering For Natural Healing Functional Nutrition Lisa O’Brien, CHHC, MSACN, has recently opened a nutrition office in Saratoga at 550 Maple Ave. For the last five years Lisa was a nutrition practitioner at The Natural Improvement Center, Queensbury, NY. She is delighted to now be practicing in her hometown of Saratoga Springs. Functional Nutrition seeks to find the underlying reason for symptoms or health conditions. Through a thorough nutrition evaluation, along with a non-invasive muscle testing technique, the priority of where to begin on the path to healing is uncovered. Your amazing body is designed to heal and repair whether it is from illness or injury. When a body cannot heal there is a barrier preventing it from doing so. What Nutrition Response Testing

does is identify the barriers to healing, which are most commonly, food sensitivities, immune challenges, heavy metals, and/or chemicals. She uses dietary changes, whole food supplements and other natural supports to overcome these barriers and allow the body to heal the way it was designed to. The supplements are natural and safe and allow people to achieve the health level they are seeking without the use of medications, which often have harmful side effects. Functional Nutrition and Nutrition Response Testing are particularly helpful for digestive problems, headaches, allergies, menopausal symptoms, thyroid concerns, fatigue, depression and immune support, but can be used to support the body in any health challenge or to maintain your current state of good health. Lisa’s office is located at 550 Maple Ave, Suite 202, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. You may reach her by phone or text at (518) 306-9257 or lisaobrien.nutrition@gmail.com, to schedule an appointment. Loon Meadow Farm Opens Bed &Breakfast Loon Meadow Farm is pleased to announce the recent opening of its new Bed & Breakfast in Greenfield Center, NY, very nearby the city of Saratoga Springs. Owners/Innkeepers Steve & Beth Podhajecki relocated from CT to NY in 2016 to fulfill their vision of sharing the 153 acre farm which Steve grew up on in the late 1940’s and the 50’s. The farm has been vacant since 1960 until Steve “came home” last year. Having owned and operated a horse and carriage livery service for three+ decades in CT the Podhajeckis brought their horses and their carriages, sleighs and wagons with them to continue offering rides at the farm in and in the Saratoga Springs area. Loon Meadow’s “house of seven gables”, built in 2016, is tastefully decorated to honor the horse, especially the driving horse. The three guest rooms each have a unique theme. All the rooms have private baths, Direct TV, mini refrigerators, air conditioning and a ceiling fan to ensure guests’ comfort. Breakfasts are traditional farm cooking with local, farm fresh eggs. In winter months sleigh rides on the farm are a wonderful way to enjoy the snow. At the end of the ride the sleigh will bring you to

What are the best strategies for dealing with the people you’re connected to for life? Author Eric Maisel, retired family therapist and active life coach, tackles this challenging question in his new book Overcoming Your Difficult Family, providing answers gleaned from his family therapy practice and coaching practice and from his interviews with experts from around the world.

P

Ask the ractitioner

“Can any of you offer suggestions for insomnia, as I will not take drugs for it?”

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Insomnia is one of the most damaging of insidious maladies that can happen to the human psyche. An unwillingness to take drugs is admirable and there is hope from a number of alternative approaches. But what must be discovered first, is the particular reason for your sleep issues. Do you have difficulty falling asleep, or do wake in the night and are unable to return to sleep? Does your mind stay 'awake' preoccupied with work, or emotional stresses, or concerns about family? Do you have breathing issues, such as apnea, or nasal congestion due to allergies? Are you light sensitive? The list of possible reasons goes on, but let's address the few that I mentioned. Work is a common mental issue that causes sleep disturbance. The root could be anxiety about completing a project, or even go deeper into issues of insecurity leading to perfectionist tendencies. Another is the relationship to colleagues. Are those relationships easy or fraught with disharmony? If the latter, it is common to bring them home for relentless cogitation. Not that mulling problems over is bad, but sometimes over-thinking an issue causes you to miss the obvious solution.

Emotional concerns, especially when focused on family or loved ones, are often responsible for sleep disturbances. Resolution goes a long way toward correcting that pattern, but help can make it easier. Breathing issues, physical pain, etc, can all cause sleep disturbances. Lastly, I mention light sensitivity, partly because I have a mild issue with it. A simple eye mask has resolved that issue. So, with respect to the rest of the above issues, I have found a number of methods to be helpful. For some it simply a matter of herbal teas that relax the body. Melatonin has helped some. For more difficult problems of long standing, homeopathy or even hypnosis can help facilitate a more friendly relationship with your body and mind. Homeopathy can be useful in many forms of breathing irregularities, as well as other physical, or emotionally based causes. Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin Shin Jyutsu and spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet, whose newest book, This Thirst, is now available, along with his previous collection, Training Tracks, poems by implosion through Amazon, or contacting him directly. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. He can be reached at 518-374-5492 or through his website, www.jeromepindell.com. #92 I June/July ‘17 I Healing Springs 9

We Are All Rhythm Driven by Jim Chiefari eing a percussionist for much of my adult life, learning the basics in elementary school, it wasn't until I was in my mid 20’s that I became driven. Rhythm driven. Playing a variety of hand drums has certainly been fun, whether at home alone, with others in a drum circle or out performing on stage. I find drumming to be motivating, captivating, and an incredible form of self expression. It can also be very healing for the performer as well as the listener. I’d like to share some of the insight I’ve gained through my experience while playing at music events across the northeast. I believe we all have a purpose, a gift to share, a heart that lives deep inside. As a performer I recognize that becoming a member of a larger community enriches everyone. I also recognize the incredible blessings that come from coming together, celebrating, collaborating and creating.

B

I feel it is safe to say most of us can recognize the power of music. Often we feel a change affecting us when something in a song grabs us. Sometimes it is a song being heard for the first time. Other times it could be in one we have listened to many times before. It could be the melody, a lyric, or a rhythm. It could be an old song from just as far back as our memories can go. Music can relieve our stress, inspire us, make us

feel creative or amplify our passion. It dissipates pain and can motivate change in our life paths. The healing power of music often brightens our days. Drumming is an important bridge in music and certainly in its early history for storytelling. Drums can lead an event and they can help carry it along. Over the last several years I’ve played with musicians and dj’s, sometimes on stage, but more enthusiastically right on the dance floor. The real magic is when the music is played from the heart and the listeners dance from that same place. This creates an additional rhythm all its own. The smiles on the faces of those sharing the moment is inspiring and healing almost beyond measure. I’ve often been asked about the way to start learning how to drum. Actually, I think drumming is in us all, in some capacity, and certainly practice is key. More importantly, just letting go of worry! Watch a young child get in the groove. We are born natural little performers. You don't need anything fancy or even a drum at all! A kitchen sink can sound amazing as can just a bucket with some sticks. The simplest explanation I have come up with is to not have our brain move our hands at all, let the rhythm do that. We bob our heads or tap

“The real magic is when the music is played from the heart and the listeners dance from that same place.” our feet to the beat of the music automatically. When we’re feeling the groove, the pulse, should simply be our guide. In the busy, often complicated world we live in there is a need for more celebrating. We need more relaxation, fun and healing. We need more positive events to look forward to. We need to shake it on the dance floor! We need to let go of worry and stress. Human history has shown that drumming has always been an integral part of storytelling and communication. Drumming has existed for thousands of years providing entertainment, spiritualism and celebration. It is my hope that the drums, along with the music and infectious rhythms created with them, will enkindle joy in all hearts. So turn on and turn up the music as often as you can. Keep your ears open to new and exciting rhythms. Get out and play! Get rhythm driven! Jim Chiefari is a professional videographer and musician, working in the capital region and beyond for the past 15 years. He is launching a new multi-media and music project entitled Rhythm Driven Coalition. Its purpose is to combine live musicians with popular songs remixed. After attending college, Jim graduated from the Vt. Institute of Massage Therapy and New School for Television and Radio.

by George Guarino Can I borrow your imagination for a while? s you read this, each word gives you permission to relax and get comfortable. You know you can’t be hypnotized against your will, but I would like you to think about that. It’s important to think about what hypnosis is and how well hypnosis can help you move past any obstacle. Hypnosis works well, and to be hypnotized to get what you want is natural and fun. And you do like to have fun don’t you?

A

Imagine someone over there, sitting in a comfortable chair, reading a short article that interests them. They’re smart and the headline caught their attention. Each word takes the reader further along. Revealing information that’s interesting, curious and makes them want more. It feels good, cared for, peaceful and relaxed. They really connect with the story. Like when an article describes a home for instance. They really can get into the experience, remembering their home, connecting with what could be a beautiful way to live. The home, the nature of the weather, the day, like right now it can be sunny with little puffy clouds or even a grey day can be meaningful. The reader may find the story opens with an experience, starting with the front lawn and the pathway leading toward the front door. Stop and look at the home, the way it’s cared for. Perhaps the grass is newly mowed giving off that fresh smell. The colorful flowers that accent the pathway add a sense of joy, and fun to the place. I wonder who planted them and what caused the choices, the colors that gave off those scents. Even on a grey day this home knows how to live and how to invite the reader inside. It’s as if the home is speaking to you. Welcoming you inside. As you imagine walking closer to the door you can feel the fresh air waking your senses. Each breath you inhale is cooling and clears the nasal passages. Each exhalation sends out warm feelings as the shoulders slump down and the body settles forward, as if floating, drawn toward the door. Some have a knocker and some have a bell. Will you have to knock on the door or find yourself pressing the bell? Do you need a key or will the door open all by itself? It’s fun to see what happens. I remember times when I was visiting my grandmother or was it my mom or a friend and she was waiting for me and opened the door from the inside just as I touched it. Made me smile. It felt good to

You can change any pattern that s been in your way by thinking differently. be surprised and wanted. I was invited inside. I could smell the dinner cooking and the faint sound of the TV, the voices and laugher like a family was there having a good time growing up, working through their stuff. You know those TV shows when the characters get into mischief yet always get through the rough times by the end of the show. Even being imperfect, they always find themselves coming together, their problems melted away into laughter. As you move further down, along the hallway, toward a comfortable chair, you may notice the pictures on the walls, and the feel of the carpeting or hardwood floors, reminding you of a home from the past that you remember. When you reach that comfortable chair you can just sit down, sink into a deep and comfortable feeling, very relaxed and at home. There’s nothing more that you have to do. So you decide to just sit there for a moment and let it all sink in. Breathing, it feels good to let your thoughts in each space connect the words you need to hear. The home, the air going in and out of the body, the feelings and the knowledge that you’ve done a good job getting comfortable with the chair and the story. You just know it. You can just relax for a while. You realize that you can get past anything that you can wonder about now. You can change any pattern that’s been in your way by thinking differently. Like when you shift a little to get comfortable, and relax, you get a lot more done. You promise yourself that you’ll accept help when it’s offered because you see the value in accepting this invitation. Letting it happen, getting things done. And as they know they can come back to this comfortable chair at any time they want to gather strength, taking in a comfortable breath or two, now, realizing how good it feels for the reader to let this be their invitation to a place that’s been waiting for so long without judging. It’s easy to imagine someone over there reading an article like this, in that chair, they can integrate everything learned and come back refreshed, relaxed and alert. Happy in the knowledge they can go back to that chair, these words, the story, anytime you want to. Feel good. And I want you to know, it’s happened because you have a powerful imagination that agreed to play for a while, getting all the benefits hypnosis has to offer can feel very appealing and fun. It’s easy to open your mind, relax and get comfortable. And this is only the beginning, when you let it happen. One of Michèle’s teachings experienced during her summer Earth Whispering events is how water is the greatest medicine of all and flows with purpose just as Earth is the womb of Life. She teaches how all healing is sourced from the Sacred Feminine, and why it is a woman’s nature to heal. Michèle shares that one must master the Feminine Energy of Water, and the Masculine Energy of Fire to direct her musing ways. She introduces us to the Spirit of all elements during her retreats. She instructs us on how to tap into these healing energies for awareness, healing and health. Many participants have reported after one of Michèle’s sacred ceremonies, of healing cancer, bone ailments and more. Come In To Your Own Light by Wendy Ball here is so much in our language and the way we talk about Self, and Light, that suggests these two things are connected, perhaps one and the same. In spiritual circles we talk about the "light body," and people have described seeing light beings. We talk about "going to the Light." when we die. The term enlightenment describes one who has realized their highest spiritual potential. Most of us have one or more stories about experiences of light that we treasure.

T

I have always felt drawn to translucency - that which takes on a special quality when light passes through it. I love many gemstones for that reason. I like playing with transparent water color for that reason because it feels like a way to play with light. Sally Kempton says: "The eternally conscious Self is what makes us conscious. Essentially, it is light. At times when our inner vision becomes pure enough to let us see through the layers of psychic debris that thickens our consciousness and make it opaque, we realize that everything is actually made of light. This is why so many people’s experience of touching the Self are experiences of light – visions, inner luminosity, or profound and crystalline clarity". This reminds me of experiences following Gestalt Therapy work in which, after release of some deeply held personal knot I would look around and experience color as vibrant, as if my inner tension had dulled my vision and once released I was free to experience the world with intense immediacy. One of my shamanic teachers calls this essential, eternal, larger Self, "Luminous Self." I'll never forget my first journey to meet this Self. She was radiant to the point of being difficult to look at directly. Her gift was a jewel of crystallized opalescent rainbow energy that encapsulated my essence. I came to understand the Shamanic path as a way of coming into my own light. No wonder the foundational healing intervention I was taught in the Healing the Light Body School is called "Illumination." During an illumination imprints, bindings, cords, are cleared from the energy field and golden light is brought in the hold space for ones your own light to come in. During an Illumination you are invited to participate in the intimate process of releasing psychic debris and bringing in soul infused qualities that allow you to step in to your full potential as an embodied human being.

“...the awakening that may be catalyzed during a shamanic healing session must be followed by the willingness to embark upon a journey and stay the course while learning to face with courage things we usually avoid.”

In the words of Alberto Villoldo: “Illumination helps you attain an exalted understanding of your life journey; it brings you freedom from emotional suffering and an awareness of the true nature of reality.” But the awakening that may be catalyzed during a shamanic healing session must be followed by the willingness to embark upon a journey and stay the course while learning to face with courage things we usually avoid. Alberto says: “Along the way emotional and physical healing can take place.....Illumination is not an internal state of awareness only. You must bring your gifts forth into the world in the form of compassion, courage and humility." Illumination is both an experience, and a process that heals as it allows us to come into our own light and shine the way for others. The Joy of

Breathing!

by Kate Kellman, MMQ ost of my life, I took breathing for granted, as most people do. Not until I watched my mother struggling with COPD and heart failure, fighting for every breath, did I come to appreciate the miracle of breathing. When I began my Medical Qigong training, it was the first thing we learned – a technique called Six-Directional Breath. Yet, like most people, I was resistant to changing ingrained habits. Control the breath? Huh?? For someone who’d experienced more than her share of control by others, my inner rebel screamed at the mere thought!

My intelligent mind could fully grasp the many benefits of consistent breath work. 6D Breath massages the internal organs, calms down the Central Nervous System and vagus nerve, inhibits “fight or flight” mode, reducing stress and keeping us centered instead of freaking out all the time. I fully understood why it was so important to breathe properly. Unfortunately, the subliminal messages from my mind totally squashed any true attempts I made to mend my ways. Those voices kept whispering in my ear: “Just another thing you should do, Kate, like eating healthy or getting more exercise or washing the car more than twice a year.” A funny thing happened, though. The more the idea was hammered into me, the more failed attempts I mustered, the more I realized a disturbing concept – I actually did feel better when I worked on my breath! It was the same masochistic way I’d learned to eat right. Growing up, my diet was horrible, as was the case with most kids in the 60s and 70s. Back then, no one knew any better. Sugar, starch, junk food with every preservative invented by man – it was what we lived on, aside from the meat, potatoes and vegetable dinner we were forced to consume once a day. When healthy eating became the fad, I gave it a go and discovered how much better my whole body felt when I stoked my engine with the proper fuel. Years later, I finally gave up all the crap because I could no longer deny the results. I was tired of punishing my body with unhealthy nutrition. In a similar way, that’s how I started to appreciate my breath – I could feel the difference. When I finally found my own rhythm, using both 6D breath (see Dr. Ted Cibik’s YouTube video for detailed instructions) and a method I learned called the Alexander Technique and the Whispered Ah (see www.constructiverest.com for more details), I was amazed at how much I actually enjoyed breathing! More importantly, I discovered how much it soothed my soul, calmed my mind, and relaxed my body. At first, I only remembered to do it when I was stressed, getting that familiar knot in my belly. “Breathe!” I scolded myself. “Just breathe!!” After a while, my

masochistic tendencies abated, and I found myself doing it more and more often – just for fun! I truly enjoyed working with my breath. Finally. Why was I so resistant? Like most of us, I believe it relates to an inability to embrace our freedom. Society puts so many demands on us to be a certain way, to fit in, to follow a prescribed program of how we ought to be that we forget our inherent birthright. I remember a friend telling me she needed physical therapy because she never raises her arms over her head. I was shocked. Personally, I love to stretch like a kitty cat in bed when I first wake up. Yet, how often do we repress our natural instincts? It’s not usually considered cool to run around laughing like a hyena during a rainstorm. Or to sob openly when we’re sad. Our repressed emotions carry into our body movements. So, not taking the time or effort to breathe properly in our harried, hectic, busy world is not so surprising. Once I gave myself permission to fully relax through my breath, I began to play with all the various ways of breathing. I remembered a quote from the Hua Hu Ching: “Drinking in serenity, breathing out contentment.” I gave it a whirl, feeling serene on the inhale and content on the exhale. Wow. That felt delicious! I played with the Whispered Ah. Following the advice of a friend who is well versed in this method, I inhaled through my nose about 70% (much less strenuous, so you stay relaxed). I paused, just waiting, enjoying the stillness. Then, when I felt ready, I opened my mouth to form a circle and whispered “Ahhhhh,” relaxing my jaw fully. Then, I waited again. It felt so good to be in that “space between” where the Taoist Masters say we experience the Tao or Heaven. I waited until another breath wanted to come, of its own free will. Then, I did it again. Wow. Where had

this been all my life?? Why had I fought it for so long??? This really felt good!!! I found myself wanting to play with my breath more and more. Instead of seeing it as a chore, a burden, another “should do” in the many requirements of life, I started to appreciate my breath. I wondered what it would be like to be in my Mom’s shoes, huffing and breathless on a muggy day. Or, to be an asthmatic during an attack, feeling like my mouth and one nostril is covered with duct tape as I run up 20 flights of stairs. How wonderful that I can breathe, I told myself humbly. The Taoists believe staying calm and centered, through our breath, controls the Po or our negative, earthly side and that deep breathing increases longevity. Doctors say it reduces blood pressure and relieves stress. Me? I say I am finally enjoying life through the miracle of simply breathing! Yoga Science Teaches Us How to Transform Energy by Leonard Perlmutter Š ou learned in grade school science class that energy can appear in either the potential or kinetic form. The electricity in the wiring of your home is available for any use you choose. When you turn a light switch to the "on" position, energy appears in the form of light. This is the kinetic state because the energy is being used or expended. However, when you turn the light switch to the "off" position, the energy remains in the potential state--ready to be used at the flick of a switch.

Y

The inherent power of fear, anger and self-willed desire can also be stored potentially or expended kinetically, and it is your personal attention that determines in which state the energy resides. If the mind's conscience, known as buddhi in Sanskrit, defines a particular thought as a form of energy that will enable you to fulfill the purpose of your life (a shreya), it is suggesting that you transform the state of that thought energy from the potential into the kinetic by taking some appropriate action. In other words, you are encouraged to think about the shreya, speak in service to the shreya, and take some physical action in service to the shreya. Such emotions as fear, anger and greed are not inherently bad or negative, for if they're handled skillfully, they can become helpful resources. If the conscience (buddhi) recognizes them as merely an ego or sense gratification that conflicts with your own Inner Wisdom, (known as preya), you are being asked to renounce your attachment to them so that their intrinsic power can be transformed and stored for your future use. The laws of physical science state that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it can be transformed. Viewing Yoga as a sister science, the ancients experimented with controlling, conserving and transforming the energy of thought. Through trial and error they realized that when they renounced a single preya desire-what could be seen as a momentary temptation or a negative thought --

the energy of that desire manifested in a different form. Recognizing this process, imagine what would happen if, instead of gasoline, twenty gallons of crude oil directly from the fields of Saudi Arabia were pumped into your car's gas tank. It would wreck your engine. Crude oil is simply of no use in a combustion engine. To become an appropriate fuel for your automobile, the raw oil must first be refined. Each of us has the capacity to employ a refining process that can transform the raw, inherent power of every thought, desire and emotion. When the mind's conscience, the buddhi, intuitively advises that the unusable, destructive and constrictive power of a particular fear, anger or self-willed desire is appearing in your awareness in the form of preya, you, as a Yoga scientist, have access to a mechanism for capturing and transforming that power. This refinement process is accomplished by consciously and willingly renouncing your attachment to the preya. Remember, in every moment, the buddhi is always present to advise you that it's not in your best long-term interest to give the preya your continued attention. If you consciously or unconsciously choose to serve the preya in thought, word or deed, you will experience some form of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual dis-ease. Every thought, word and deed is a means for spiritual unfoldment. Recognizing that desire is the fuel for human action, the ancient sages conceived a scientific formula that might well be called the spiritual equivalent of Albert Einstein's E=MC2. The formula they discerned was D = E + W + C. Every desire is composed of three basic components: energy, will power and creativity (consciousness). When you align every thought, word and action with the wise and good counsel of the buddhi by serving the shreya, you'll be led for your highest and greatest good. When you willingly and consciously surrender your attachment to the merely pleasant, comfortable, familiar and attractive preya, you really give up nothing of value. The intrinsic power of the preya is not lost to you. Instead, your voluntary act of sacrifice automatically transforms the preya into internal reserves of energy and will power, and opens the doorway to the superconscious mind--your access to the Divine source of intuitive wisdom and creativity. Conversely, when you go against the advice of the mind's conscience (buddhi) by serving the ego or sense gratifi-

Katrina Clay’s mission is to show that animals, nature and music are guides to living an authentic and symbolic life.

“Every desire is composed of three basic components: energy, will power and creativity (consciousness). When you align every thought, word and action with the wise and good counsel of the buddhi by serving the shreya, you'll be led for your highest and greatest good.” cation that conflicts with Inner Wisdom in thought, word and deed, your internal strategic reserves of energy, will power and creativity are diminished. The major crisis of our culture today is not one of IQ--intelligence quotient. Rather, the problem we face individually and collectively is one of WQ--will quotient. In twenty-first century America, countless people possess the intellectual capacity to make brilliant decisions, but because they are habituated to serving the limited perspective of the ego, senses and unconscious mind, their reserves of will power have become bankrupt. Without sufficient will power to exercise discrimination, their reserves of energy and creativity are similarly diminished. The more these reserves are depleted, the more frequent and severe the tension, stress, anxiety, burnout and pain. As in banking, our personal balance sheet always reflects whether deposits or withdrawals have been made. The choice of solvency or bankruptcy is up to each individual. In modern life, you need plentiful reserves of energy, will power and creativity to fulfill your many duties and responsibilities. You have obligations to yourself, your family, friends, business associates, society, the animal kingdom and the good earth Herself. Yoga Science teaches that everything you need for a happy, healthy and secure life is always available in the form of

your thoughts, desires and emotions. A ready supply of power arises within you daily in the form of fear, anger and selfish desires. If you do not expend this power kinetically in the present moment, you can consciously conserve and transform it for use at another time. Yoga Science offers a systematic, practical method for conserving and transforming energy. It's very simple, and all it takes is knowing how to direct your attention appropriately, based on the intuitive wisdom already within you. Leonard Perlmutter, founder of the American Meditation Institute (AMI), is the author of an acclaimed book The Heart and Science of Yoga:The American Meditation Institute's Empowering SelfCare Program for a Happy, Healthy, Joyful Life, an encyclopedic guide to meditation and the Yoga Science that supports it. Praised by such international medical luminaries as Drs. Dean Ornish, Mehmet Oz, Bernie Siegel and Larry Dossey, this ultimate guidebook not only explains what to do, BUT WHY TO DO IT. It delves into Yoga Science, the eight-step method for managing the life force energy that propels us and connects us to the infinite power and creativity that is within and without us all. B AT H S

by Diane Palma have been taking mineral baths for several years, but, more regularly the last few years. I wasn’t exactly sure why I was taking the mineral baths, but I always enjoyed the experience. I decided to dig a little deeper into why they are offered and for what reasons. As a matter of fact, prior to writing this article I actually experienced a craving, or a need, similar to that of an addiction for the mineral waters. So, I scheduled a bath the next day at The Roosevelt Baths located at the Saratoga Spa State Park. As an experiment, I continued the following weeks at the other three other mineral bath locations comparing my bath ‘experience’.

I

It is hard to put into words the ‘experience’ of taking a mineral bath. One of the ways I learned to carve out time for just myself was by scheduling a Bath. Personally, I consider the Roosevelt Bath to be the ultimate and most profound bathing experience. I slowly learned about the benefits of taking a mineral bath each time I arrived for my scheduled appointment from Colleen, a Roosevelt Bath Spa Attendant. Colleen is my go to source for the customer service aspect of bathing in the mineral waters. Aime “Trent” Millet, is our local Water Whisperer. Trent is the walking Wikipedia of Saratoga Springs mineral waters. Seek these two gems out if you are interested in the treasures that abound and quietly surround us. The Roosevelt Bath’s in my opinion is the most powerful soaking experience. It’s source of water comes from the Lincoln Springs. Saratoga is the only place on the continent where this type of naturally carbonated water is found. Lots of people are curious to know what happens when you “take a bath.” It’s a simple concept, just like if you were at home taking a bath, except it a more therapeutic bath experience. Colleen, the Roosevelt Bath Spa Attendant, will carefully explain the simple procedure and what you can expect. Once you are greeted and pay up front for your scheduled services you are directed to the changing room where you will get a robe and slippers and a locker for your belongings. You can either enter the relaxation room where you begin to unwind until you are escorted to one of the 40 treatment rooms, or you can go directly to the steam room. It is suggested that you use the steam room prior to the bath so your pores can open and accept many of the minerals from the carbonated bath water. Colleen emphasized the importance of drinking water before, during and after the soak due to the detoxification that occurs while

YwO G A ith Jen Wednesdays ¥ 6-7:15pm @ Minerva Fire House submerged. The minerals will increase the oxygen in your blood stream which improves circulation. The magnesium will help with inflammation and pain. It is also suggested not to shower immediately after taking the bath. She will then knock on your door, and, if you choose, offer you a warm towel to dry off when your session is completed. After you are robed you exit the room and are then escorted to the to the relaxation room for 20-30 minutes while your body accommodates all of minerals, or you will continue on to another spa service. The Roosevelt Bath’s offers the full therapeutic experience. There is a buoyancy to the water from the carbonation at all locations. Roosevelt has the most, and the carbonation is visible as bubbles in the tub. All bath locations use the spring water directly from the source and they are heated by using the regular hot water tap. Body temperature water is ideal and will remain most effective. It is important to note that you need the hot tap water because it comes out of the earth between 48-55 degrees depending on which spring you are at. The domestic hot tap water allows the spring water to oxidize immediately that is why it turns a coppery color. I have taken enough mineral baths but for my experiment I wanted to go into each bath not fixated on any of the external distractions, just with a focused intent on how the water made me feel. When I was craving a mineral bath I immediately made an appointment for the Roosevelt Bath’s. I told Colleen how I was craving the water and if she ever heard of someone feeling like that. Yes, she has. Your body gets used to the healing qualities and deficiencies from being without those minerals. I got in the tub and immediately felt its power as if I was wrapped in a loving warm blanket. Soft music plays throughout the building. My mind became clear, I was completely relaxed, my body felt good, and time flew by. Before I knew it my session ended and I was back into my busy world. Next, I went to The Spa (formerly the Crystal Spa) which utilizes the Rosemary Spring. Again, I am greeted, escorted to my bath and with focused intent of experiencing the water. The bath was a comfortable size and I drifted into my world. It had a lighter feeling and welcoming presence. This mineral source, according to Trent is considered an iron water that is excellent for hair and skin, empowering, and known to help with mental exhaustion, good for circulation and blood pressure equalization. From this experience, I went home and took the best nap ever! #92 I June/July ‘17 I Healing Springs

My next stop was to the Medbury Spa in the village of Ballston Spa these waters have been famous since the 1800’s. Trent reported that the San Souci springs are used here and they are a fine bi-carbonate water with light natural carbon dioxide giving it a light and airy experience. The water is ideal for hair, skin and nails and helps to draw out toxins. Trent described his experience as grounding and soothing, with sense of presence and clarity. He said, “My body had energy but was relaxed and stress free. In a way that maintained physical “confidence” and available in reserve. It was a spiritual experience.” For me, and my experiment, I have to agree with Trent. I felt a sense of overwhelming peace, being free, empowered and kind of lifted-up. My final bath was at Complexions Beauty & Wellness Spa which utilizes the Congress Spring. Trent’s description of these waters is of a mild mineral content very relaxing and delightful to the body and senses. During my experience, I felt relaxed, alert and curious. The mineral water’s mildness was complementary to the additional service that I rendered while there. It was relaxing yet not overpowering. Manuka Essential Oil by Sarah A LoBisco, ND (Excerpted from dr-lobisco.com) ou’ve probably heard the strange sounding name of this essential oil before. However, I bet it was in relationship to the plant’s sticky contribution to its gooey form… honey. Beyond its popularity for its rejuvenating effects on the skin, it is also one of the most referenced kind for its beneficial health effects. According to a 2016 study in Frontiers in Microbiology:

Y

The majority of recent studies investigating the mechanism of action of honey have focused on well-characterized, standardized active manuka honey produced by certain Leptospermum species native to New Zealand and Australia, which has been registered as a wound care product with appropriate medical regulatory bodies. Thus, unless otherwise specified, this review will focus on manuka honey. This article; however, is going to move focus away from the gooey-rific health properties that result from the plant’s nectar.

Rather, I will explore all manuka has to offer from my favorite secondary metabolites, essential oils. (If you want to learn more the benefits of this “healthy fructose” (that contains everything from minerals, phenolics, and prebiotics) visit the following links: http://www.saratoga.com/livingwell/2015/10/the-dark-side-of-fructose-and-the-sweetness-ofhoney/ and http://dr-lobisco.com/natural-remedies-and-essential-oils-respiratory-and-immune/. )

Manuka Oil’s “Sweet” History Manuka plants (Leptospermum scoparium and kanuka, Kunzea ericoides) are indigenous from New Zealand. The ancient Maori people were reported to use the plant for a diverse range of ailments. These included: skin aggravations, gastrointestinal upset, dental care, and immune support. It was said that Captain James Cook used the tea leaves to combat scurvy in his expeditions of the Southern hemisphere. New Zealanders learned from this explorer and incorporated his application of using the dried leaves of the plant in beverage form. (Sources: 1, 2, 3)

Functional Nutrition seeks the underlying cause of ill health for each unique individual.

Since 1984 Tim Talmage, DC Lee Masterson, DC Bob Irwin, DC Michael Ashline, DC

439-7644 Which Manuka? Manuka belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) which also includes clove, allspice, eucalyptus, and melaleuca, among others. It contains over 100 constituents with 95% of its volume made up by 50% of them. As with all essential oils, variances in these compounds are found within a manuka oil related to the plant’s particular species, chemotype, and harvesting and distillation methods. (Source 1, Source 2, Source 3) (You can learn more about the important quality aspects of essential oils on my database at dr-lobisco.com) In 2005, the wellness properties of manuka essential oil was increasingly being appreciated by aromatherapists worldwide. The International Journal of Aromatherapy stated that as more attention was paid to this oil, the importance of obtaining the proper quality for therapeutic use is indicated.

The body is designed to heal itself, if given the right tools. 550 Maple Ave Suite 202 Saratoga Springs, NY 518-306-9257 lisaobrien.nutrition@gmailcom take a look at what else Leptospermum scoparium can do. Manuka has the following actions: • Smooth Muscle Relaxation, Antioxidant Potential, and Microbe Effects in Vitro • Viral Inhibition and Oral Health • Skin Health: Manuka Oil Protects Hairless Rats from UV-B Irritation, Maintains Skin Thickness, and More

Conclusion: With its popularity increasing in the United States, I am sure more research will be released on this oil. For now, if you can trust the source and take a glimpse at the species, it appears quite safe and beneficial in a variety of ways! And…for oily moms, it may be a wonderful new oil to surprise her with on her special “May day.” For sources please visit: dr-lobisco.com/manuka-essential-oil/

In a later study, researchers reported on three potential indications of these differences relating to levels of active constituents in different species, differences found in species, and varying microbial effects that resulted. A 1998 abstract from the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, which highlighted manuka oil’s ability to calm muscle spasms in guinea pig smooth muscle (involuntary muscle), also supported the differing effects resulting from similar sounding plant names of the same family.

Some Other Actions of Manuka Essential Oil Now that we know the importance of choosing the right oil, let’s

Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique PAST LIFE REGRESSION SESSIONS

Unlock the past to thrive in the present QHHT is a spectacular journey into your higher consciousness. Pioneered by Delores Cannon, this hypnotic method facilitates a trance state through visualization accessing your higher self, where you will discover that all healing and answers lie within. Our higher self gives access to past lives and other memories releasing old timelines and blocks to more soul-infused living. People come for sessions for so many reasons.
