Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. One of my teachers, John Perkins, mentioned that an indigenous tribe he spent time with had no word for sustainability. This may seem inconsequential, yet it is significant because for them there was no opposite of sustainable. All of their choices were made in honor of the future; anything different was incomprehensible to them. Language is an interesting part of human life. I love stringing words together to explain concepts that stir in my mind. Yet, I’ve never been a particularly easy student of language itself. There is evidence that speaking multiple languages creates an expanded thinking process. Available words, or the lack of them, such as sustainable, affects the way we think. I am always interested in expansion, so for this reason I’d like to learn more languages other than English. Yet, it doesn’t happen. Then during a workshop, I mentioned that one reason I love animals (beyond having been born with the animal-loving gene) is because we communicate without speaking. While, I may say words to my dog or horse, it’s more presentation and energy that they understand. In that moment, it seemed perhaps I have learned a second language…a nonverbal one. Practicing this language expands my thinking beyond cognitive thought, in order to take in the communication of my senses. A few years ago I went to Zimbabwe to volunteer in a lion program. The trip itself was kind of like being back in college, except instead of going to class I went to activities such as lion walking, cub sitting, elephant drives, and various chores like painting fences. All the lion activities were my favorite and allowed the opportunity to practice nonverbal language. My favorite moment was the first time a female lion rubbed up against me in greeting. When I was assigned snare search (looking for poacher’s snares on the perimeter of the reserve) on horseback, I was excited to be with one of my favorite animal species—horses. That was until I got to the barn, where the horses were underweight by U.S. standards. The saddles were old, in need of repair and did not fit well on the horse’s backs. To top it off, most of the people I was with had never ridden a horse before. Regardless, we tacked up and set off. As people got somewhat used to being on a moving animal, the guides had us move up to a trot. Again, most people had never ridden before, so they bounced around on the small and brave horses’ backs. I was the most experienced rider, yet because the saddle didn’t sit evenly on my horse, I was no better than the others at finding my balance. When the guide brought us up to a gallop, I was horrified. Not only out of empathy for the horses, it felt horrible for me too. We all survived. The following day, I was sitting next to the river that ran through the reserve. This is where I went for quiet contemplation. The horses were free at that time and could go wherever they wanted on the 3,000 acres, like the Zebras that shared the same land. They chose to come to the river where they stood belly deep in the nourishing water and ate the greenery growing in the river. As I sat in my semimeditative state, I watched the horses having a level of freedom rarely seen in the U.S. They had a herd of friends, space to roam, a river to lounge in and food and shelter to return to. While they still looked thin to me, I realized that plenty of horses in America have more food available to them than many humans do in Africa. These horses definitely had a different life than my horse, Tom. Yet, who was I to judge which lifestyle was better? As Americans we are provided much privilege and how we are able to care for our animals is one of them. Whether it’s for the best is up in the air. Sometimes we harm our animals with too much care, such as excessive food and micromanaging their behaviors. Yet, we assume that because we are well intentioned, any other kind of care is negligent. I think of myself as open-minded, empathic and tolerant. Sitting by the river at Antelope Park, I saw a prejudice in myself not previously noticed. While it’s hard to admit to you and myself, there are probably others yet to be seen. Open-mindedness isn’t static but takes effort, awareness and remembrance. I’m going to continue giving it my best go. Our primary language, as well as our culture’s ideas, shape how we see and the judgments/opinions we make. Are we willing to step out of that conditioning to see the world anew? It sometimes takes traveling to another country, but can also be done by continually clearing the lens we see through. Not an easy task. People say they want to “make the world a better place.” This is a noble sentiment, yet who’s world are they referring to? And who is to be the judge of better? Plato said, “As youth fades and time brings changes we may change many of our present opinions. So let us refrain from setting ourselves up as judge of the highest matter.” We will continue to have opinions and preferences, yet let us be aware of the futility in believing people in different situations should subscribe to the same ideas—that’s what causes wars amongst nations, families as well as inside ourselves. The most powerful change we can make is to be kind to all others, while being aware of living our own lives in alignment with our deepest priorities.

CLOSURE:

how to let go and move on

by Wendy Ball ecently several of my clients have wanted to move on from something, yet seemed to need a path or a process to help them digest and integrate what they wished to leave behind so they they would be free to step into the new.

R

Two core processes in shamanic work that are often used to give direction and structure to healing sessions are the release of what is no longer wanted, needed, or serving one. This release then creates space for what is wanted in its place. We release hurt in order to trust, anger in order to feel joy, fear and inertia in order to embrace a sense of adventure. Sometimes we know what needs to be released and simply need the invitation to move it out of us. Other times it is not clear what needs to be released. Sometimes the old feels sticky or stubbornly rooted. It refuses to let go.

Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

Recently while exploring the work of George Kavassilas, an Australian author/speaker/mentor who is dedicated to human empowerment, I ran across a process for closure that made a lot of sense to me. What is closure? People seek closure because they want to move on. Closure allows us to come to peace around something we have found difficult. Closure allows us to forgive, to integrate, to learn, to reconcile. Closure is a process we engage in with something difficult until we feel released and can move on. Closure is natural and often takes place in its own way and its own time. We say time heals. But sometimes it is long coming, and sometimes we need it sooner rather than later. Closure can be done with anything. Typically we seek closure regarding significant relationships. It may be the relationship itself, or something that has happened in a relationship that has derailed the connection. It can between friends, partners, parent/child, between colleagues, business... It can be with oneself regarding an attribute, behavior pattern, circumstance, physical challenge. Here’s my take on closure process George Kavassilas’ closure process:

1

Acknowledge. Take time to explore the circumstances, the feelings, the lines of connection, the tangle. When we feel bound to something a can’t seem to get out of it or leave it behind it often means there is an agreement or contract, often unconscious about something we are supposed to get or to give. It can help to ask: “how is or has this person or thing been of service to me?”

“We release hurt in order to trust, anger in order to feel joy, fear and inertia in order to embrace a sense of adventure.” Reconciliation. In this we comes to terms with the reality of our engagement with the other or with some aspect of our selves or the situation. This takes self-honesty and courage. We have to be really done with something and that is not always the case.

2

Gratitude. When we open our hearts in sincere and honest exploration we get to see that everything we experience happens in relationship whether it is with another or ourselves or the world. Choosing gratitude for that which challenges and deepens us helps makes us available to learning. Some people would say this is the whole point, that human incarnation offers the ultimate learning environment.

3

Embrace what has been learned. So yes, this is where we get to harvest the fruits of this process. Again, heart engagement is needed to forego defensiveness and ask: “what have I learned?” especially when the experience has been painful. This is the food that nourishes our Soul.

4

Release. After all this one is finally free to let go of the relationship, circumstance, attitude or behavior pattern one felt bound to. It has been acknowledged. You have mustered the courage and self honesty to see what you were getting from your engagement. You have comes to terms and expe-

5

rience peace, even gratitude for the learnings you are now able to integrate. After this rich, and often moving process one can now release and truly let go of whatever it is. Some say that at the end of life we go through a process of recapitulation which as I understand it is a kind of revisiting of the events and experiences of ones life. I think I prefer to think of this process as one of closure. Some say that our time in human history is one of closure, that we are at the end of cycles within cycles within cycles and are preparing to embark on a new way of being. Whether you are dealing with one experience or an entire cycle of lifetimes, this is a useful and soul enriching process. Dancing in the Storm and downs, that our moods are like owls. I pondered her words for many years, and occasionally they cross my path today. If we are so worried about expressing our feelings, due to what other people may think, is that really being authentic to your self? There are so many storms these days, climate change, political storms, social upsets, and uncertain grounding in a digital world. They will never stop. So you learn to dance in them. The kind of dance that frees you from all attachment, and breeds self love. Not in a narcissistic way, but an immersion into an intuitive oasis that protects you from all things harmful. As the tornados swirl around you, you lift up your face to meet the wind, you let out your voice and let what comes be real. Free of worry and shame.

by Hillary Raimo ou know those days you feel like God has forgotten you. The times when your heart feels crushed and you know love is forsaken. In today’s world of mental illness screening, school shootings, and general distrust of others, a breeding of a terroristic culture, one must know when the clouds have gathered, as much as they know the clouds have parted.

Anger is an emotion modern day man has yet to fully understand. There is righteous anger, and there is harmful hateful anger—the kind that cuts your throat and leaves you to die. This is what needs to go in our world before we gain access to the cosmic intelligence we really are. When the human being fully heals its dysfunctional stance with life, the planet will regain balance, moods will settle and the clouds will part. This is the natural cycle of the human emotional spectrum,. If it is blocked in any way, there is work to do. The no judgment zone allows for reflection on life transgressions, and here is where the real growth comes. Time goes by and people change because of this ensured nurturing.

The storms pass, and come again. It is a choice between feeling pain and learning from it, and wallowing in it and letting it take you. Have we become numb to our own pain, so we become numb to other peoples pain? In the old days, when campfires were built in caves, and everyone gathered to hear the elders tell their life stories so they could learn, connection was in the heart. Trust was woven into the fabric of society and there was peace. When the great war came, and brother turned on brother, and sisters turned on sisters, the rift in the universe was formed. The stars gathered and held witness to whose side everyone was on. Competition reigned, and everyone was a potential enemy. The stories told of how in the future two towers would fall, and the world would turn dark, as these heart connections were lost. It would take the awakening of the star seeds to change the tone. When they remembered the light of that world in this one, it would be a difficult and emotional challenge. In overcoming these challenges the star seeds would find their way to their purpose, and the world would gain balance once again. When one watches the 24-hour, 7-day a week stream of information these days, it often feels like things are hopeless, and smothered in layers of needed healing. The star seed light was placed in the human genome in the times when the Goddesses ruled. The good news is, we all have this light in us, and it can be flamed. This Equinox reminds us to balance the light and dark. The new age mythos suggests we are always fighting the dark, or trying really hard to ignore it and not see it for what it is. A bringer of hope. Dancing in the storm lets the light in. Moving our body thru the drama, lets us say yes to the freedom it offers. Non-attachment is a basic spiritual principle in many traditions. Its wisdom discussed in many circles. Our challenge is to create nonattachment without harm, inconsideration or judgment of anything. Is this not enlightenment? Believe you can, and you will. There is hope, and you hold the star seed spark inside of you. Award winning photographer, artist, writer Hillary Raimo has been exploring the healing arts for 20+ years. An avid researcher on human consciousness, Hillary enjoys discussing the realms of possibility as a radio talk show host. Listen tp her archives on YouTube. www.HillaryRaimo.com

Embracing Balance and Discovering Vitality With The Five “Elements” 1

existed in ancient China. Understanding how we arrive at five is entirely necessary to understanding this ancient concept.

—The Fundamentals—

by Christopher Reilly e often speak of balance in our lives and of how important it is. A topic to consider when seeking balance is: what exactly is it that we’re balancing? A solid understanding of what we are balancing can give a more concrete idea of what success will look like, and how to get there.

W

The Wu Xing, or as they are often translated “Five Elements,” have provided that important framework for understanding balance dating back over 2,000 years. They arise from observations of nature: changes of the seasons, the cycles of life, the balance of natural ecosystems, and the balance of the systems within our own body. By gaining a deeper and more practical understanding of these Wu Xing, perhaps we, too, can find insight that will help us achieve balance within ourselves.

What’s In a Name? The name “Five Elements” may be misleading. As modern English speakers, we associate “elements” with substances. The elements of chemistry are the different kinds of atoms that make up all matter that we are familiar with—the basic building blocks. Gold, oxygen, and aluminum are elements. The phrase Five Elements makes it seem as if it is a theory of five “elementary” substances of life. Although that is true of the four elements of ancient Greek thought, it is entirely different from the ancient Chinese way of thinking. To reclaim the philosophy in its true form, let us return directly to the original Chinese phrase, the Wu Xing.

Refining Translations Wu refers to the number five. Xing, however, is not at all referring to “elements” as we usually think of them. The Chinese symbol for Xing is the image of a human being who is taking a step or stride, and the meaning is of movement rather than substance. The Wu Xing are more accurately interpreted as the “Five Movements.” Changing this one word from element to movement opens the door to seeing the philosophy behind the name in a profoundly more clear and enlightening way. The Wu Xing refer to the natural movement of life in a balanced and organized way that gives vitality and health.

By the Numbers Why five movements? The number five is not an accident, and arrives very organically from the naturalistic cosmology that 14 Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

Here, I suggest the use of numbers as a way of understanding the “progression of becoming.” It is a way that life was understood in ancient China, in a step-by-step way from its most primal and basic form, to its most developed and sophisticated forms. It is a way of thinking that gave birth to the Five Movements. At the beginning is the number one. One is the coming into existence, the primary becoming. In short: Something exists.

2

Once you have something, for it to be recognizable or meaningful, there must be something that it is not. This is represented by the concept of yin and yang: the two positive and negative poles of existence such as light and darkness, outward and inward.

3

The third step is the interaction and exchange between yin and yang. The field and the force between the positive and negative poles of a magnet is a great example of this. The differences between yin and yang provide for the movement and animation of existence. This third level, the movement of life, is called “qi.”

4

Now we have the movement and animation of life spreading out in the four directions of the compass, or in the three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. It is the conception of the movement of existence through space and time.

5

Now we finally get to our subject, the five! Five is the organization of life’s movement in four directions or dimensions surrounding a center. With the addition of a center around which to orient movement, there is the concept of cycles, including the seasons of the year. There is also the organization of life centered within a living being. This is why there are Five Movements, and where they fit in.

Balance: Generation and Control In a system of thinking in which universal unity is a fundamental truth, these five movements are always in relation to each other. They exist as aspects of a single whole, and flow into each other as well as against each other, but are never in isolation. The Five Movements interact with each other in two very important ways. In one way, one movement gives rise to another. This is called the generation cycle. It proceeds in this order: Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood and Wood generates Fire. This is a continuous cycle of becoming and feeding one into the other. Balance in this aspect means that when fire movement is flowing as it does in nature, it gives rise to and strengthens earth type movement, which strengthens and gives rise to metal type movement, and so on. Imbalance can occur if the movement gets stifled in one particular phase of movement, blocked from flowing into its next phase, or simply gets weakened by too many demands. Think of it this way: When a stream winding through a forest is flowing well, all is watered and healthy. If the stream becomes blocked, the area before the blockage can get backed up and flooded while the area after the block begins to dry up and become parched. Or, if one part of the stream is taxed too sorely (a thirsty

herd of buffalo have found our stream), then the stream from there on will be too weak and dry. A smooth and plentiful flow from one place to the next is vital to the balance of the forest. The second way is the control cycle. This is how the Five Movements interact to keep each other from excess. It proceeds in this order: Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood, Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, and Water controls Fire. Balance in this aspect means that if one movement becomes excessive, the movement that controls it will serve to limit the excess and guide the movement back to a natural state. If fire flares too hot, water can cool it; if wood grows unwieldy, metal can hedge it in. Imbalance can occur when one movement is excessive to the point of dominating the movement that should serve to control it; or if the movement that should control it is weakened to the point of being ineffective. Think of it this way: If our stream were to be seen after a heavy rainfall, the strength of its movement could be so strong that it would overflow its banks and flood the forest. Alternatively, if the banks of the stream were weakened by erosion or deforestation, they could weaken to the point of not being able to contain our stream at even its normal levels, and once again there is flooding, or disorder. Dr Marilyn Gewacke, one of the founders of SEV, writes about this in her new book, The Oneness of Being: Birthing the New Human. This book received two gold medal awards for books most likely to change and transform the Earth. As a human species, we are going through a most incredible metamorphic time on Earth. We have a remarkable opportunity to return to our true multidimensional nature and ascend and evolve into the New Human. As we begin to see through the illusions of time and space (the Third Dimension), we can release the burdens and timelines of the outer, external world, finally looking within for our empowerment, our creativity, and our true nature. As we believe and experience more clearly the magical and mystical “world within”, our frequencies shift, awakening the evolved heart, thus transmuting separation and duality. At SEV, we have come to know that the qualities of the evolved heart, like compassion, joy, authenticity and love, are the fuel for our vertical rise into fifth dimensional living and soul actualization.

These light fields of the heart raise our frequencies, creating vibrations that rocket us into higher consciousness. This inner shifting from the third to the fifth dimension is experienced as a transcendence of time, where there is a deepening presence within, a beautiful connection with all living things and a desire to remember our core soul blueprints and missions. Releasing oneself from the gravitational pull of the current outer paradigm on Earth is not an easy process, and so recognizing the inner frequency flow of higher consciousness is paramount. It is important to note that dimensions are based on vibrations. It is like learning to turn your radio dial to different stations. Each dimension has a range of frequencies which create the reality or experience within that dimension. As we ascend, we experience energetic shifts within our bodies, emotional clearing, and paradigm alterations, creating newfound abilities like telepathy and clairvoyance. This is not always an easy ride as many of us may feel rapid fluctuations in mood, feelings and physical sensitivities, as these rushing tides birth the New Human Paradigm. We can see the current chaos in the outer world as clear evidence of these colliding paradigms, seemingly creating intense debris and challenges. The good news is that we have the Solutions to our outer world chaos in the calm and stillness of the inner world of soul wisdom and consciousness expansion. Waves of strong cosmic energy have been amplifying this process on Earth so the window of change and transformation is primed and fertile. Let's leap together and create a New Earth and new paradigm for living!! We are waking up from 3D (third dimensional) amnesia and connecting with higher dimensional consciousness.

What happens at SEV? The experiences and services we provide are fundamental to the

"shift" in the New Human Consciousness Paradigm, always leading with the inner wisdom of the heart and the guidance of soul remembrance. Retreats: We offer experiential retreats on the land for humans to gather and experience their multidimensionality, the expansive and powerful heart and the oneness of simply being. Cohesive heart technologies, group meditations, chakra clearing, yoga and 5th dimensional guided inner journeys are but a few of the offerings. Connecting with higher dimensional beings including ETs (extraterrestrials) are part of this amazing, cosmic transformative process. Silent personally designed retreats in our newest charming, rustic cabin, Elf Heart Haven Cabin, allow guests to travel within and totally unplug from the external world. Individualized services can be booked in the main lodge to facilitate one’s growth and healing. Come visit us and also enjoy the hot tub, sauna, walking in the woods, and listening to the river flow. Individual Services: Bodywork massage and energy healing sessions, Yoga, Chakra alignment through Sound Immersion, Crystal room healing and guided meditations, Quantum healing hypnotic sessions including past life regression, Channeling for fifth dimensional guidance and ascension. We are very passionate and committed to Earth, her inhabitants and our Consciousness evolution. As we do this, we will have the incredible opportunity to join the larger cosmic community in peace and love! We would love to meet you and be a part of your consciousness revolution. How Light Guides Us An excerpt from Luminous Life by Dr. Jacob Israel Liberman

A

t daybreak in a large lake on the island of Palau in the Philippine Sea, a dance begins. Millions of golden jellyfish, each the size of a teacup, race east toward the light of the rising sun. Once they reach the sun’s early morning rays, they halt. Then slowly, as the sun makes its way east to west, the jellies follow its arc. As dusk falls these unique invertebrates come to rest on the lake’s western shore. The following morning, the dance begins again. These jellies are just one of countless species whose life journeys are guided by the sun’s light. According to marine biologists, humpback whales use sunlight, along with the stars and the earth’s magnetic pull, to guide their ten-thousand-mile yearly migrations. Despite ocean currents, the whales swim in a straight line — north to feed and south to mate — varying less than one degree longitude from year to year. Each fall in Antarctica, emperor penguins march, single file, on a treacherous seventy-mile journey inland to their breeding 18 Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

grounds. Once there, they pair off and mate. After the female lays an egg, she carefully transfers it to the feet of the male, who incubates it in the space between the base of his belly and the top of his feet. The female then returns to the ocean in search of food. For two months, the males huddle together without food, balancing the eggs on top of their feet, while temperatures descend to one hundred degrees below zero Fahrenheit and wind speeds reach one hundred miles per hour. In an intricate dance, the males on the inside of the group move toward the periphery as their body temperatures rise, while those on the outside gradually move in to get warm. Later, after the females return and the chicks hatch, the penguins trek en masse seventy miles back to the sea, as if they were one organism — each one a cell in an intricately connected body of life. In addition to jellies, whales, and penguins, many other creatures — ranging from butterflies to songbirds — take part in extraordinary migratory journeys guided by something outside themselves that is inseparably aligned with something inside them. When we learn about such feats, we often marvel at these creatures’ amazing ability to travel from point A to point B. In the absence of maps, printed directions, and GPS technology, how do they find their way to their locations — never varying their routes, never getting lost, never second-guessing themselves, and never bickering with one another about the right route to take?

“...many other creatures — ranging from butterflies to songbirds — take part in extraordinary migratory journeys guided by something outside themselves that is inseparably aligned with something inside them.” Most of us only hear about these stories on the Discovery channel or from documentaries such as March of the Penguins. But when we come upon this phenomenon in our own lives, it stops us in our tracks and makes us realize that we miss a lot of activity happening around us. When I moved into a rented cottage on Maui, Hawaii, some years ago, I found a little Russian Blue cat with gray fur and yellow eyes sitting on the porch staring at me. I learned that she was feral and that my neighbor Koa called her Pepper, and that she came by around the same time every day. I bought a few cans of cat food from a nearby market, opened one, and left it on the porch. She gobbled it up, so I left food and water on the porch and each day Pepper came to eat. This went on for five months, and we began to grow friendly toward one another. One day I saw Koa carrying a cardboard box with Pepper inside. “Where are you taking her?” I asked.

“I have a friend on the other side of the island who wants her.” The friend lived thirty-five miles away, and though I was fond of Pepper, I knew it was for the best as I was leaving for Europe within a few days. Three months later, after a friend picked me up from the airport and drove me back to the cottage, I found Pepper waiting there for me. Surprised, I stepped over to Koa’s cottage. “When did you bring Pepper back?” “I didn’t.” Together we walked back to my cottage. Once he saw the cat, Koa said, “Oh my God.” Then he called his friend and asked, “Why did you bring the cat back?” The friend replied, “I didn’t. She ran away almost as soon as you dropped her off. I never saw her again.” Amazed that she had found her way home at the very moment I arrived, I renamed her Lani, which means “heaven” in Hawaiian. Soon I moved to a new home and I took her with me. The Heart, Hormones & Essential Oils

YYYYYYYY

uring February, “American Heart Month,” I explored the mysteries of the heart and importance of moving beyond the conventional viewpoint of cardiovascular disease prevention. Integrative philosophies demonstrate that the connection between the brain and heart is evidence-based and has impressive results. HeartMath Institute has shown that the synchronization of physical, emotional, and mental systems (coherence), measured with heart rate variability (HRV), enhances stress adaptability and overall well-being, supports emotional balance, and promotes calmer responses to perceived tension in social situations.

Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

To begin Valentine’s Day week, I followed up on the heart-brain link with a passionate two-part article on the importance of social connections. In Part 1, I reviewed several studies which evaluated how social relationships shape health. It was found that positive connection leads to beneficial outcomes through behavioral, psychosocial, and physiological effects. In Part 2, I reported on some eye-opening truths that revealed the deadly trio of the heart: toxic connections, ambivalent relationships, and perceived social isolation. Isolation is so detrimental, that has been used to torture prisoners. In less severe situations, it has been shown to negatively influence many health parameters. These include: higher blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, alteration of gene expression of stress and inflammatory pathways, lowered immunity, and more. Thankfully, the news wasn’t all doom-and-gloom for those with strained relationships. I closed with tools and techniques to help with building more positive connections. Of course, these included the use of essential oils! Now, as we move away from the winter and into the spring, I thought it would be a great time to take advantage of Spring Fever. This post is about using essential oils to support more healthy relationships through balancing stress and hormones. When one is overly stressed, and/or in hormone havoc, explosive, destroying, emotional outbursts have been known to occur. Let’s explore how essential oils can help!

Healing Springs Mission: With knowledge comes choice. Our mission at The Healing Springs Journal is to address the whole person by providing articles and stories that allow the reader to make empowered lifestyle decisions in relation to the wellness of their mind, body, spirit, and environment.

How Essential Oils Calm the Brain, Relax the Body, Balance Hormones, and Promote Bonding

1. Stress Resiliency with Hormonal Balance

Below is an explanation of how essential oils accomplish this hormonal and stress modulation in a holistic way: Usually, a psychological action also has a physiological or biochemical impact on the body. For example, hormonal support could be provided by calming emotion from inhalation, effecting stress hormones or enzymes, and providing direct physiological effects as a result of phytoesterogens modulating estrogen levels. One small study with 22 menopausal women in their 50’s examined changes in neurotransmitter concentrations, cortisol, and thyroid stimulating hormone in relationship to inhalation of clary sage oil. The researchers found that inhalation of this oil decreased cortisol and increased 5-hydroxytrptamine (the monoamine, serotonin) as well as alleviated mood. In another randomized study of sixty-three healthy postmenopausal women, researchers found effects of inhalation of the essential oil of neroli to have positive effects on menopausal symptoms, stress, and estrogen levels. A psychological and psychological effect was seen with jasmine oil reported in the Journal of Health Research. Inhalation of jasmine caused an increase in beta wave power (indicating increased alertness) in the anterior and left posterior region of the brain when they tested 20 subjects with inhalation and measured the response with an EEG. Subjects also reported a greater feeling of well-being and were less drowsy when inhaling jasmine as compared to the resting and control condition (almond oil). Another well-known oil for its calming effect on the heartbrain-hormonal connection is ylang ylang.

2. Promote Positive Moods and Beneficial Behavior There is evidence on how emotional blends of essential oils can impact behavior and provide support for more positive moods.

Better sleep has been found to be crucial for: Weight Reduction, Memory and Recall, Overall Physical and Mental Wellbeing Stress is a critical factor in the quality of sleep.

Call; Barbara Stevens, 518-755-5053 Certified Stress Management Consultant This is due to their combination of physiological effects from the secondary metabolites and the biochemical and psychological impact of smell. You can visit https://dr-lobisco.com/tisseason-cheer-finding-gratitudein-essential-oils-bottle-part-ii/ for the summary of six reasons why emotional blends of essential oils are scientifically legit.

3. Assist with Bonding and Alleviating Discomfort in Times of Stress One small study with eleven pregnant women found that clary sage can elevate oxytocin, the “bonding” hormone, for 15 minutes after inhalation in several subjects. All participants experienced a decrease in cortisol, the “stress hormone.” This variation in response of oxytocin with these woman is another trial which shows the innate wisdom of essential oils. The constitutes found in oils balance the body based on the individual’s needs, environments, preferences, and microbiome. For example, most pregnant women can use a little stress relief, but maybe not all of them need the bonding hormone at the particular time of the study. There were some limitations to this trial I should mention. The first was that it was a small sample. The second, more disturbing one, is that researchers combined the oil with propylene glycol. What?! This chemical may have impacted results due to it being an endocrine disruptor (see below). Adulteration of essential oils makes my geeky brain go coocoo! I am a stickler for purity (see my database on my website for articles on quality)!! I literally grabbed my bottle of lavender to inhale to calm my brain and body after reading this. Regardless of this chemical addition, there were no negative effects. Clary sage oil has also been studied with chamomile oil in another trial to evaluate its use for labor discomfort in midwife care. This study was over an eight-year period and included over 8,000 moms. The authors concluded: The evidence from this study suggests that aromatherapy can be effective in reducing maternal anxiety, fear and/or pain during labour. The use of aromatherapy appeared to facilitate a further reduction in the use of systemic opioids in the study centre, from 6% in 1990 to 0.4% in 1997 (per woman). Aromatherapy is an inexpensive care option. Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

The oils in these studies were lavender, clary sage, marjoram, cinnamon, and ginger. Clary Sage essential oil; therefore, may be a go-to-oil to help to promote positive emotions in labor, decrease discomfort, and alleviate stress in women.

4. The Smell of Trust Smell can trigger emotional responses and influence feelings. One study with 90 healthy young adults found that lavender aroma influenced participants to transfer more money units to the transferee in a game of Trust. Peppermint, on the other hand, being stimulating, caused more pause to be so giving to the trustors. Again, variations may occur based on the uniqueness of the individual and past associations with specific odors.Still, you may want to dab on some lavender oil if your heading to the bank to ask for a loan? If you do and it works, share the prosperity in the comments section!

5. Balancing Stressful Hormonal Effects in Relationships Many are aware of how hormonal alterations and stress can cause emotional alterations and have the potential to negatively impact relationships, especially parents of young adolescents. Furthermore, falling in love can alter hormones which can contribute to desire in connected partnerships. Interestingly, one study showed that women tend to have an increase in testosterone when in love, and males have a decrease. This may mean that men have less “desire” when they are mated “for good.” Alternately, females may crave more physical connection. This has a lot of implications that I’ll go more into in an upcoming blog. As discussed in number one above, clary sage, neroli, and jasmine oils may be helpful for many of these symptoms. Constituents in fennel have also been studied for balancing hormones and assisting with lactation.

6. What Essential Oils Won’t Do to Hormones Another benefit of essential oils is that they can be used to replace toxins and chemicals that can cause hormonal havoc. If your hormones are off balance, you may want to consider trash22 Healing Springs I #97 I April/May ‘18

ing hormonal agitators, such as xenoestrogens, and cleaning up your home safely with products made with essential oils. Essential oils won’t act as endocrine disruptors.

Conclusion and Summary Essential oils can be used to balance the heart, mind, and hormones to promote better behavioral responses to stress and emotional regulation. This can result in healthier social relationships. Essential oils aren’t the sole “magic drop” for all things stress and hormonal, but they are a big player in my practice. They are especially synergistic with healthy nourishment, movement, rest, and other life-enhancing practices, which each have dramatic impacts on well-being. Reiki and Pain Management by Suzanne Golub, RMT hronic pain is a way of life for many people. According to a study by the Institute of Medicine, an estimated 100 million adults suffer from chronic pain. Additionally, millions of people suffer from acute pain that lasts for six months or longer. Pain can interfere with normal day-to-day activities and quality of life, as well as have an emotional and psychological impact, causing withdrawal, depression and anxiety. Constant pain can also highly sensitize the nerves to the point where the slightest touch can become painful. Chronic pain has become one of the most common reasons for seeking medical attention, but it is also one of the leading reasons Americans are now seeking alternatives in more natural and holistic treatments such as yoga, massage, meditation, and Reiki.

C

Reiki is the art of energy healing, based on ancient Tibetan teachings, rediscovered by a Japanese Buddhist monk, Mikao Usui, in the late 1800s. Reiki is based on the idea that we are all made of universal life energy. Through the effects of daily living – stress, poor diet, illness, injury, emotional upset, or other factors, the energy may become blocked. Reiki opens the blockages so that energy can flow freely. The results are deep relaxation, the release of stress and tension, and relief from a long list of ailments: muscle aches and pains, chronic pain, headaches and migraines, fatigue, insomnia, inflammation, anxiety, depression, before and after surgery, and during chemotherapy. It offers a broad spectrum of pain relief because it works on several different levels – physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. Reiki works with the chakras to open up the flow of energy in the body. Chakras are spinning wheels of energy that connect our etheric body (the subtle energy field outside our body) with our physical body. We all have hundreds of chakras throughout our bodies, but Reiki focuses on the seven main chakras that run along the spine. Each chakra is connected to different organs in the body, as well as to emotions. So, for example, if you have trouble with indigestion, bloating, or a sluggish liver, you may have a blockage in your Third Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, located just above the naval. When the energy gets blocked, the chakra can get out of alignment or unbalanced. Reiki works to open up the blockages and re-align the chakras so the energy flows freely. Even after one Reiki session, people can notice a difference in the way they feel and a noticeable improvement in their wellbeing.

For many who suffer from chronic pain, medication has been the go-to treatment. And while it can be helpful, medication may not be the best alternative for everyone; whether because of side effects, because of interference with other medication, because of the fear of becoming drug dependent, or because the person is in recovery. Many people would like a more natural way to threat pain, and medication should not be the only alternative presented to patients for managing their pain. There have been few high quality studies of the use of Reiki for pain management, and many studies that have been conducted have been too small or so varied that it has been difficult to realize statistical significance. However, the research that has been conducted has shown that Reiki can be effective in treating chronic and acute pain. A recent issue of the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, included a review of 66 clinical trials on biofield therapies (including Reiki). The authors of the review concluded that there was strong evidence that biofield therapies help reduce the intensity of pain in general, and moderate evidence that these therapies help reduce the intensity of pain for people who are hospitalized or who have cancer. A study by Suzan Thrane and Susan Cohen, “Effect of Reiki Therapy on Pain and Anxiety in Adults” (University of Pittsburg, 2013) concluded that “there is enough evidence to continue researching Reiki therapy as an intervention for pain and anxiety.” The National Institutes of Health has completed five studies looking at Reiki’s ability to benefit people with diabetes, advanced AIDS, prostate cancer, fibromyalgia, and stress. Some of the studies support the ability of Reiki to reduce pain and anxiety, and suggest its usefulness to induce relaxation, improve fatigue and depressive symptoms, and strengthen overall wellbeing. Reiki is gaining more acceptance by the medical profession, and is currently being offered as an integrative therapy in medical facilities that include The Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine & Digestive Center, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Hartford Hospital, University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center, and R. Adams Shock Trauma Center, as well as in many palliative care centers. Columbia University Medical Center offers Reiki in their operating rooms as part of a unique Certified Medical Reiki Master program.

Medical practitioners and patients are becoming more aware of the real and lasting effects of Reiki on managing pain. Reiki works on a deeper level, channeling the flow of energy throughout the body to promote a sense of wellbeing. It is an extremely low risk intervention for those dealing with pain, and provides a therapeutic option for those who are in severe pain or unable to be touched, because it can be done “hands off” without touching the client. While Reiki is never a substitute for medical care, it works perfectly in conjunction with all other traditional and alternative medical therapies. It is a safe and gentle practice with no negative side effects, and many positive ones.

“Medical practitioners and patients are becoming more aware of the real and lasting effects of Reiki on managing pain. Reiki works on a deeper level, channeling the flow of energy throughout the body to promote a sense of wellbeing.” Over twenty years of practicing Reiki, I have seen clients experience profound deep relaxation, stress release, and relief from pain, anxiety, migraines, neuropathy, aches and pains, digestion issues, and many other physical and emotional issues. Clients leave a Reiki session feeling calmer, more peaceful, more grounded and centered, with a more positive outlook. Reiki is a wonderful addition to a treatment plan for those dealing with chronic and acute pain, and looking for a more natural and healing way to manage pain. Suzanne Golub is the owner of Shaanti Energy Healing, and a Reiki Master, who has been practicing Reiki for over twenty years. She offers loving and compassionate healing at The Garden in Saratoga Springs, as well as Reiki classes. You can find more information on her website at www.shaantienergyhealing.com, and she can be reached for appointments at (518)301-0407.
