Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. A ‘sit spot’ is a place outdoors that you go to on a regular basis and sit quietly—at least three, preferably more, days every week. The idea, as taught by Jon Young author of What the Robin Knows, is to be in this spot often enough that the birds and animals get habituated to your presence and carry on around you, rather than fly/run off because of you. With time, you are able to create a new understanding and deeper relationship with the animals and plants in that space of land. I have tried a few places as my sit spot, but never stuck to any one in particular. This morning I am on the deck with my computer on my lap, so I can be outside while working. It’s been about 14 years that I’ve been doing this (the first couple years The Healing Springs Journal was created on a desktop computer that made me sit inside the whole day long.) What I’ve seen here has made its way into many a Publisher’s Corner, as my seat is directly between a favorite tree of the local birds and the sunflower seed feeder. I have birds fly so close as to almost hit me in the head—Tufted Titmouse, Goldfinch, and most often Chickadees who are not particularly concerned with humans anyway. One Chickadee even landed on the back of the chair I was sitting in. Another time one flew into the screen on the door and was knocked out cold, so I picked him up, gave him some Reiki and off he flew. Hummingbirds have hummed in my ear. Chipmunks have eaten from my hand. The other day a Mourning Dove landed on the railing and looked me in the eye while singing her song of mourn. I've watched Robins feed their young and Phoebes fly for their first time. I’ve also watched Deer graze, Fox trot, Hawks soar, Bats echolocate and Owls observe. Last year there was a nest of Ravens close by and one baby talked nonstop, seriously nonstop. This morning I saw an Indigo Bunting in the apple tree. According to “On This Day” on Facebook, a couple years ago I saw an Oriole in the same tree and captured it in a photo that made the cover of The Healing Springs Journal. A couple mornings ago there was a black squirrel underneath the bird feeder. That’s right, a black squirrel. The beauty of this creature truly caught my interest. We’ve had black squirrels in the past, but I haven’t seen one in a couple years. According to the Internet, the estimation is a black squirrel happens 1 in every 100,000 squirrels. It is not a new species but an eastern grey squirrel that expresses an unusual amount of black pigment, or melanin. Oh lovely, a Blue Heron is now flying overhead. My sightings could go on and on. They are what make life enjoyable for me, so my eyes and senses are keenly attuned to seeing them. Our culture places great value on goals—defining, working on and then reaching them. It had been a goal of mine to find a sit spot. As I said earlier, I never stuck with any one location (and it has to be the same place over and over.) This lack of follow through had at times disappointed me. As I reminisce over all that I’ve seen from right here on the porch, it’s obvious that I’ve had a sit spot all along—the deck, yet hadn’t named it as such. Our goal seeking sometimes distracts us from what we already have available to us. This can happen in our self-improvement, while we search for ways to become ‘better’, overlooking what awesomeness we already are. A similar idea is exploring a city or country far from home without ever having done the same in the locations we live. Or telling our dogs how to behave, without observing what they are already doing that is perfect. Or, reading about bird behavior in a book, without paying attention to what the birds are doing right next to us. My point ultimately is that sometimes we miss the obvious when focused on a goal or end result. For instance, I had thought it necessary to find a sit spot somewhere else, missing the fact that almost every day I sat on my porch observing tons of wildlife behavior. In what areas of your life are you searching for better, when something unnamed, yet just as satisfying, is already in your daily living? Most likely you’ll find the answer in the areas of your greatest disappointment or dissatisfaction. It is often in these places where we miss what is already there. Perhaps the Gods of Disappointment have sense of humor or maybe it’s that we are often disappointed when we have attached to a specific, and often romantic, result and hence are looking only for a certain scenario. Remember to keep your mind exceptionally open, for its necessary to see the old with new eyes. Once you’ve seen it, keep the awareness close to your heart, knowing we are always provided for. A caveat if you are interested in finding your own sit spot; the kind of peace experienced by simply watching the world around us tends to wane motivation for the priorities of modern life. You might end up following the words of the poet Mary Oliver in her poem The Lark; “…Squander the day, but save the soul…” Doing so is contrary to the messages we receive regularly from outside, which say ‘buy this’ ‘do more’ ‘be better.’ And yet, the modern world could use people that have genuine peace at their core. Or as the Dalai Lama says “The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kinds.” So, go, find your peace in whatever way you can—a sit spot or dancing with friends. How doesn’t matter, that you bring peace to the world does. photo by Deborah Neary

Our

Community Mindful Eating Mindful Eating Event Scheduled for July 5, 2018 at 6:00 pm at Four Season’s Café: “Healthy Food Tasting: A Mindful Journey.” Trying to squeeze more time out of our day, many of us have found ourselves eating “al desko” (at one’s desk while working) and eating on the go. Yet there are hidden costs to this hurried, mindless way of eating, including poor uptake of nutrients, overeating, and unthinkingly choosing unhealthy processed foods. Studies offer evidence that the alternative, mindful eating, can aid in weight loss, digestion, selecting healthier foods, overcoming binge eating, and promote healing. Event participants will be invited to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, a brief talk and a mindfulness experience. The evening will offer simple strategies for integrating mindful eating into daily life. Following the presentation and mindfulness practice, attendees will receive a 20% discount at the cafe. Event organizer Rachel Kurtz says the dinner is aimed at anyone interested in healthier eating or mindfulness and is an opportunity to enjoy healthy food as well as a healthy approach eating. The event will be led by Saratoga Springs Integrative Health Coach, Rachel Kurtz and hosted by Four Seasons Cafe on Phila Street. For more information contact Rachel at Rachel@fromheretowellbeing.com or Rich at Richard@fourseasonsnaturalfoods.com.

Healing Springs I #98 I June/July ‘18

GOT TOO MUCH STUFF? by ML Healey f you never bring it into the house/garage/ office/barn/studio, you never have to deal with it. This is the first rule for not getting sidetracked by accumulations of stuff in our lives. Papers piling up on kitchen chairs, closets bulging, bathroom counters spilling over with personal care products, these are situations that can rob us of the calm we want to feel in our homes.

I

Remember how you imagined your home would look and feel after you first saw it, and before you moved in? You probably intended a tidy, comfortable, and inviting place. And, it might have seemed pretty spacious before all the furniture and boxes defined a different reality. Moving is hectic, so the setting up stage may have gotten short changed as regular life beckoned. If storage isn’t thought through as a system, items tend to simply get set aside or stacked on convenient horizontal surfaces. This can cycle into an exasperating sense that our stuff is taking over our lives, we can’t find things, and overwhelm ensues. Dealing with the material stuff in our lives is sometimes called possession consciousness. We have such an abundance of choices and products we can easily clutter up our lives without thinking of consequences. Whether its open jars of pickles, half used bottles of shampoo, old magazines, toys, sporting equipment, electronics, or patio furniture, if we keep bringing in new without deciding what to do with the old, things pile up. These older items may be relegated to the backs of cupboards, basements, garages, or storage units, but they still have to be dealt with at some point. It is possible to approach the situation manageably, and one way is to focus on a single category at a time. Take shoes for example. Begin by putting like with like. Think of all the different places shoes have been tucked away over the years: front hall closet, totes in the basement, mudroom corners. We’re talking about dress shoes, winter boots, work shoes, sneakers, and footwear for sports. Haul them all out and line them up in one place, maybe the living room floor. Look at what you’ve got. The general order for consideration with shoes is keep, resale, gift, donate, and lastly trash.

Functional Nutrition seeks the underlying cause of ill health for each unique individual.

The body is designed to heal itself, if given the right tools. 550 Maple Ave Suite 202 Saratoga Springs, NY 518-306-9257 lisaobrien.nutrition@gmailcom Now begins the sorting phase, and it’s time to get real. Miss mate, broken or ripped shoes go in the trash, maybe with a thank you for their good service. The next consideration is a grey area that can be difficult for some people. Be honest. If shoes aren’t good enough to be worn again, beloved or not, they shouldn’t be left in a donation box or given to a thrift store. These charities spend inordinate amounts of money to dispose items not good enough for resale, which diverts resources from their mission. When choosing what to keep, it’s important to be scrupulously realistic, and not sentimental, otherwise active storage space is dedicated to something that’s essentially a memento. If an item is a keepsake, put it in a long-term storage area with tax records, old letters, and archival photographs. Are some of these shoes for activities no longer pursued? If your dancing or skiing days have gone by, the footwear can go too.

Now that the pile had been whittled down, it’s time to calculate easily accessible storage space. Rotating winter and summer items will make a huge difference. Clean mud and salt from winter wear to store in boxes or totes in your place for out of season goods. This frees up room for sandals, light weight hiking boots, and regularly used shoes.

with minimal effort. A result is increased awareness of footwear owned, simplified access, and ease in putting things away.

Is the closet floor still a jumbled pile? For easy access, put only frequently used shoes with clothes regularly worn. Lesser used pairs can be stored in a secondary closet, hanging shoe bag, or zipper case under a bed.

ML Healey is a professional organizer. She describes her work as helping people deal with their possessions by asking strategic questions, then skillfully guiding the process to satisfactory resolution. Her company is Green Martha Professional Organizing. www.mlhealey.com

Dealing with shoes usually takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, and it’s DONE! Now there’s a system that’s easy to maintain twice a year

This practice usually saves money because we see what we have, we’re much more likely to use what we’ve got, and…. we probably bring fewer new things into the house.

Healing Springs Journal

Fear by Carly Hamilton-Jones uring my 1st-grade choir concert, Meg Hennessey fainted from the top row of the bleachers and, in a subconscious gesture of empathy, I went down right after her, breaking my glasses and flailing on the gymnasium floor.

D

After that traumatic episode, I generalized my anxiety (or gesture of empathy) and passed out: during church services, in dentist chairs, and the exact second any needle pierced through my skin. Basically, anywhere I imagined it'd be inconvenient to faint, I'd feel faint (and sometimes follow through on it). There was nothing physically wrong with me (I had several tests). I just scared myself to the point of fainting. This anxiety escalated. I never let fear prevent me from doing things, but there was almost always inner struggles and cautious dread. And it made living in the moment very difficult. Years went by and the anxiety spread to other situations—my health and driving. My fear ran so deep and was so powerful that it physically controlled me. I tried to run and hide from this fear but it didn’t work. It escalated. 10 Healing Springs I #98 I June/July ‘18

But what did work was: Confronting it. Leaning into it. Breathing through it. Caring for myself, physically and emotionally. And guess what happened? The clouds parted. I saw myself undefined by fear. I caught sight of my true potential.

These days, fear says to me: Don’t send the email. Don’t raise your hand. Don’t sign up for that seminar. Don’t apply for that job. Don’t ask for help. Don’t take the risk. Do all the housework yourself. Check Facebook one more time. Meditate tomorrow. It’s not perfect. Give up. Wait longer. You can’t. You won’t. You shouldn’t. Ahhh! These words are familiar and comforting. But when I listen to them, I realize I’m not evolving at all. I’m stuck in a place that’s keeping me from jumping and dancing and exploring—from truly living. So fear will try to protect me and I'll refuse to let it. Because I don’t need it anymore. We don’t need it anymore. Can you toss fear in the trash, banishing it from your life forever? Nope. Nada. Never. It’ll always be with you. But what you can do and should do—is venture on despite it. You are more powerful, more amazing, more true to yourself than ever before. If you think fear may be holding you back from something take a moment to consider what it would be like to stand up to it— to stop pretending it doesn’t exist. The sooner you do, the sooner you'll begin to fly.

6Steps to break the fear cycle 1. Acknowledge it. It’s holding you back from something.

2. Notice it. It might show up as: • Procrastination • Perfectionism • Negative self-talk 3. Separate from it. • What does it look like? • What’s its name? • What does it sound like? 4. Talk to it. • What is it trying to protect you from? • What’s the worse that will happen if you listen to it? • What’s the worse that will happen if you don’t listen to it? 5. Thank it. • Appreciate that it’s trying to protect you. • Most of the time, you don’t need its help. • Come right out and tell your fear you’ve got it covered. If I left you with these five steps, you’d probably be able to move forward, maybe even get that new job or lose five pounds. But I’d be leaving out a critical step. If you don’t lean into your fears and face them head on, they’ll come back as strong or stronger than before.

How do you lean into your fears? • Look at your old beliefs. Where did the fear originate? • Notice where the fear shows up in your body. • Breathe through the urge to run and bolt the other way.

This is not easy. This is scary. But this, my friend, is the good stuff. The worthwhile stuff. Fear will continue to return in full force until you allow yourself to stand up to your fears and look them in the eye. A good coach can help with this step. Courage comes from choosing to not let it define who we are capable of becoming.

And know this: You are not your fear. Your fear is not you. It is separate from your inner being, your wisdom, your guidance, your truth. This process takes time. Continue practicing. Learn to respect it. Create boundaries around it. Get curious, seek answers. Hold it at a distance, allowing your heart to trump it every time (unless you’re being chased by a bear). Then run like hell. Carly Hamilton-Jones is a personal coach and consultant who helps busy women re-evaluate their to-do lists and feel empowered to create a life of freedom and flow. This is when I met don Oscar Miro-Quesada Solevo, a well known and respected international Kamasqa Curandero and Altomisayoq from Peru. An added benefit for me was that he spoke English, had studied transpersonal psychology, and was a remarkable workshop leader. This shaman is wise, patient, and can see what most do not see. When his eyes look into mine I feel open, innocent, transparent, grateful, and trusting. There is no need to hide from this healer with no ego and a very big heart. Don Oscar works with a powerful mesa (altar) with artes, objects of power that bring healing energies and that open our inner sight. He uses these sacred medicine pieces to remove all vibrations that are not wanted in our mind, body, and spirit. These artes come from nature, the earth, the sea, and from his teachers. They are sacred treasures passed down through his lineage. The altar is at the center of his teachings for ritual and healing. In September, this beloved medicine man will be teaching in our area in the Catskills at Menla Retreat Center. The four day retreat will be aligned in shamanic vision and ceremonial artistry embodied by Inka descendants inhabiting the Antisuyu (northeast region) territory of pre-Columbian Heart Island (South America). We shall enter into deep communion with the powers and forces, nature beings and spirit helpers, animal allies and starlight emissaries, that comprise the soul animated tapestry reflected in Sky and Earth. Learning to harness the

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: • How to ensure one’s life choices are in alignment with universal spiritual truth. • Daily practices for the purification of faulty thinking and over reliance on the ego mind. • A ritual skill conducive to the merging of our individual and universal souls as a shamanic initiation and embrace of Great Originating Mystery. • The art of mihushanku (ritual earth feedings) for spirit based healing of psychological distress associated with post-modern living. • Ceremonial approaches to befriending the natural world in the form of offerings of gratitude for the sacred gift of life. • Andean teachings on paqokuna pilgrimage in honor of the fall equinox as an opportunity for restoring reciprocal energetic exchange (ayni) within all our earthly affairs. • The creation and ritual man Please consider joining me September 20-23, 2018. Tap into the Power of

MINDFUL EATING

by Rachel Kurtz ating mindfully may bring to mind a slow, silent breakfast at a yoga retreat—challenging to replicate in everyday life— however, simple mindfulness practices are not difficult to integrate into daily. And the potential benefits are staggering. These practices may help you: • Lose weight (if needed) • Change your relationship with food and your body • Enjoy your food more • Eat the right amount and types of food for your body and level of activity • Stop eating in response to emotional triggers • Choose foods that are healthier and give you more vitality • Improve digestion • Decrease heartburn, bloating, and other digestive distress • Better absorb nutrients • Aid in healing your digestive tract and body as a whole

E

Simple Yet Potent Mindful Eating Practices Imperfect mindfulness. The aim of these practices is not monklike focus on every bite of every meal, but rather, to develop habits that are more mindful. With each practice you move away from mindless consuming and towards a healthier way to eat. Pick a few suggestions below to use on a regular basis. Perhaps, try a new idea each week. You might set aside one meal to practice an assortment of ways to tune in. Experiment. Find what works for you. Pay attention. Before you eat, tune in to your energy level, emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. Continue to stay present during and after eating. Notice messages from your body and mind. You may also notice which foods make you feel vital for hours, and which cause sluggishness later on. Focus on a deeper level with a short meditation after eating: breathe gently and locate signals from your digestive system. Notice any thoughts or feelings arising. You might find yourself not reaching for an after-meal snack out of habit or emotional need. Slow down your nervous system. Take two to four relaxing breaths before you take your first bite. You may want to count to four as you breathe in through your nose, and to eight as you breathe out through your mouth. Or choose any breathing technique that calms you. This short practice engages your Parasympathetic Nervous System, causing the body to “rest and digest.” This state allows better uptake of the nutrients from your food. It can also stop the stress response, which for a number of biological reasons, causes accumulation of fat. Take an attitude of gratitude. Before you begin eating, consider your food’s incredible journey to your plate. Take a moment

before eating to ponder the farmers, the seeds, the sunshine and water. You may want to thank a higher power or the universe for providing you with this precious bounty. Appreciate the food using all your sense: before your first forkful, notice the colors, shapes, arrangement, and aromas. With your initial bites, notice textures and temperature as well as taste. Savor the last bites. Make a regular meal into an occasion. Gather your loved ones and, even if you are eating alone, leave devices behind. Arrange the food on dishes and use silverware. Why not experiment with “plating” to make your meal look especially appealing and feel special, whether for yourself or your loved ones? Eat sitting at a table. Conquer the urge to eat mindlessly at your work desk, in front of the television, in your car, or standing up in the kitchen. If it’s too quiet, try music, an audiobook or podcast for company. Chew and swallow without rushing. Some suggest 20 chews per bite to slow yourself down and ensure digestion begins in your mouth where it belongs. If the very idea is overwhelming, try counting chews for at least the beginning of one meal. Note that if you don’t feel you have time to leave your work desk to eat, challenge yourself to try it at least once. Notice if you have more energy and focus for the rest of the day and if you actually get more done. Many studies suggest breaks increase both productivity and creativity. Eat better food: cook at home more often, eat more veggies, and eat cleaner. Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Imagine how good you will feel when you use food to support your health and well-being, to fuel your body, become more vibrant, and save the planet, too. True, organic and local cost more, but I like the expression “Would you rather pay your farmer or pay your doctor?” Buying organic veggies and cooking at home is also usually much less expensive than eating out. Remember not to aim for the perfect diet, rather, aim to do more for your body (and those you may be feeding) and the environment. Rachel Kurtz is an Integrative Health Coach studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and Craniosacral Therapy at Turtleback Craniosacral Education. Through studying meditation and these studies, mindfulness in general and mindful eating in particular have become her passionate interests. Before she embarked on this path she was a high school English teacher, and she still loves to teach, now about health and well-being. Hanging Out With Soul

pens along the way which is that we notice that stepping back and listening and observing and having respectful conversation with parts also comes from a part. But which part? It comes from our Center. We might say it comes from our Self, a part that until now has remained elusive. This part has a particular feel to it. It holds us in positive regard. It doesn’t judge. It may feel very old, like it has been with us since the beginning, even before the beginning. Some people call this part “S” Self, or big Self, or dare I suggest, even Soul.

by Wendy Ball o much of my work recently has been about encouraging people to bring their focus inside themselves, to seek their own answers to questions such as “what should I do.” The simple act of asking oneself, or rather ones Self a question can feel quite radical. We are so familiar with pressure, subtle and otherwise, to form our opinions and shape our behavior from politicians, advertisers, educators, parents, that we forget we might have a say in the matter.

Where does our Soul reside? We can ask the experts, or once again, we can go inside and feel it out. There may be a reason why common language carries phrases like: “with all my heart and soul,” or “it makes my heart sing.” Or we instinctively put our hands on our hearts to indicate the center or deepest part of our being. A teacher I have a lot of respect for, George Kavassilas, talks about heart/soul essence. This about sums it up. We can go there to commune with ourselves and find out the truth of things for ourselves. And however that feels for you, however you get there, that is right, for you. It’s a connection, and relationship, with the part of you that has the overview and that knows you the way we want and need to be known, that loves you unconditionally. We simply need to open to this connection, to take our attention off external authority and bring it there.

S

When we do tune in to ourselves (our selves) we are likely as not to notice that there is not just one self, but several, or many. And these selves are often in conflict. For example, we feel deeply tired and desperate to let go of everything for a bit and just rest. One part reminds us harshly that Rome was not built by resting. Another part nervously reminds us that bills will not pay themselves, or that kids will not mind themselves, or that partners will not approve. Other rebellious parts that we normally keep securely locked up may see an opportunity to break loose and advocate for a dose of irresponsible behavior. A marvelous way of resolving inner conflict is to develop the knack of identifying thoughts, emotions, impulses and behavior patterns as “parts” and dialoguing with them. A mysterious thing hap-

The Hakomi Method is one of the simplest and most beautiful ways I know to create a space of loving presence that allows us to access the deeper reality of ourselves. The shamanic tradition also provides ways of accessing this deeper, larger Self. In the Peruvian mountain tradition in which I was trained it is called Luminous Self. ask questions, receive messages and gifts that anchor our experience of this Self or of the truth it is telling us. The feeling of connection with this Self is so sacred, so precious. And this is not some other being, some ascended master or angel, it is us. Why do we so often want to identify what is most deep and true a loving with something or someone outside of us? One almost wonders if there is not some kind of program to diminish us because the looking outside habit is so pervasive, and it feels almost sacrilegious to consider we might have what we are looking for within ourselves. Soul is real. Soul is within us. Soul is our deepest and truest friend. The unconditional love and acceptance we crave comes from Soul. Hanging out with Soul is a knack that is definitely worth cultivating. It may save your life. It will definitely make it richer and more joyful. Wendy Ball offers guided journeys to commune with Luminous Self face to face in Albany and by phone and Skype. What has changed, however, is the deepening awareness of the profound privilege it is to be in service to this divinely ordained Commission and the ever growing need in our world for these Teachings. We have also been made aware of who is the Source of these revelatory Teachings that seem so relevant as Heart and Soul Awakenings and Healings for us all given the overwhelming challenges of our present day world … that Source who these Divine Guides honor and serve so impeccably … that of the ultimate Creative loving mysterious force of Divine Mothering God Essence in perfect union with the ultimate manifesting power of Divine Fathering Essence. We also want you to know that we have a seasoned and spiritually devoted Staff representing the Northwest, Northeast and Southwest Regions of the US: • Marie Marks of the Northwest • Susanne Baron of the Northeast • Marshall Estner of the Southwest Lastly, know that our Foundation is a sacred space of heartfelt, safe Community and Spiritual Family so whether you are part of our online Programs, participants of our Earth Ceremonies or a guest of one of our Festival Of Light activities, we encourage you to get to know and engage with all of us.

About Phaeryn Sheehan I have had a very eventful, interesting but challenging life, mostly because I kept finding myself in spiritual initiations that I could not understand the reasons for... Fortunately, Grace kept sourcing me as I kept falling down and away from what I

thought I wanted until I realized that my life as I was trying to create it wasn't going to happen no matter how hard I tried to make it so. And then I met Ilona Linda Day, a spiritual channel and teacher. The spiritual reading I experienced from her changed everything for me. I have to say that being a Channel for Ascended and Angelic Realities for many years has somewhat broken down my erroneous beliefs about finding lasting Love outside myself. Thus the very reason I am feeling guided to create to expose and share my personal Journey of chasing after the Great Love, and then only to find It waiting inside of me.

Finding the Fire

C

reate the experience of being a part of natural grace within your mind. Picture yourself as the plum blossom tree of the meditative garden. Your roots are strong and healthy, your leaves full and at their ease as the wind describes and defines their movement. The light of the sun warms and gives itself to you in a deathless gift of life and vitality. The moisture and nutrients of the soil that hug and protect your roots rise within to meet this penetrating starlight as you embody the joining of the heavens and earth. Life flows, moves and transforms. Something moves to the forefront of you—a drive to expand, to rise up and to continue the life that was entrusted to you by countless ancestors. At the very culmination of your woody branches, you bloom. Vulnerable, delicate petals unfold to show the world your very essence in a courageous call to the wild: see me, come to me. Life recognizes life, the industrious buzzing of small wings carry pollen from stamen to pistil, and life moves forward into its next incarnation. This sort of movement within a living being corresponds to the traditional element, or movement, called fire. Fire tends to be

518 374-5492 www.jeromepindell.com warm and move upwards, it has an intimate role in our relationships and interaction with the world outside of ourselves, and has more to do with truthfulness than toughness. In traditional Chinese medical thought, it is associated with the human heart.

The Heart of the Matter In Acupuncture and traditional Taoist texts, the heart is the receiving place of our intuitive and internal knowledge of virtue, and the way to live a good life. It is the seat of our interaction and understanding of the natural world, and the gateway through which we can experience that natural world at the most intimate level. It is likewise the place where we can receive the most intimate of connections with the natural world—our relationships with family, loved ones and friends. The closer we are with each other in pure, truthful and sincere terms, the more our fire burns with one light, and the more we are aware of that connection.

Simple Joys and Complex Problems The emotional experience traditionally associated with the fire movement—joy and contentment—is not surprising considering the above. When we are in harmony with our natural environment and surrounded with healthy and honest relationships, it is a natural outcome to feel warmed and deeply peaceful. This is the precise reason why many traditional teachings from China and southeastern Asia deal with the elimination of desire and fear. When we are concerned with personal gain, competition, greed, fear and the like, then our attention is focused on these things to

the point of obscuring our connection to the heart, and the freedom of the fire movement to glow throughout the being. When we choose to deny something our heart knows to be true, we necessarily create a shadow within that connection to our heart, as well. The song of nature is most often experienced as a soft and fluid melody within the heart, and requires a special sort of focus and courage to listen to consistently. The quieting of the rational mind and disciplined management of desire and selfishness opens the way to hearing the song more clearly. When fire movement is too hot and is flaring, we may feel manic and jittery, and our sleep may be disturbed. When fire movement is stifled and obscured, we may feel a lack of joy or zest for life, and a sense of isolation or disconnection. If fire movement and the heart are stifled strongly enough, we can also feel lost or without direction.

Fire and the Other Four Movements Other than keeping the heart free of the haze of wanting and denial, what else is crucial to the healthy movement of fire within us? In the phases of the Five Elements, or Five Movements, fire arises from the wood, and is kept in check by the water. Keeping these two movements healthy is a powerful way of balancing and supporting our fire. Please join me in the next issue of the Healing Springs Journal to explore these other ancient movements, and continue our journey toward balance with, and within, all five. Christopher R. Hypnosis to Forget Someone

Use a purple elephant

by George Guarino,CH ypnosis is powerful. When you witness a stage hypnotist causing someone to NOT see the hypnotist standing right in front of them, it’s an amazing feat to watch. The subject actually does not see the hypnotist right there in front of them… or do they?

H

They hear the hypnotist’s voice, they respond, but they emphatically take every action that is needed to be absolutely sure that the hypnotist is not in front of them. This is a negative hallucination by suggestion which is the hallmark of deep somnambulism. Some call it level six on the Harry Aaron’s depth scale but it really is something possible to achieve without going through other phenomena first. Have you ever looked for your keys over and over, only to find them, when you calm down, right in front of you, where you left them? How about looking for the ketchup bottle in the fridge. You look everywhere but you can’t find it. Then you ask your wife to look and she points it out on the door right in front of you. Weird huh? It happens every day. The difference between the two scenarios is that one is a natural phenomenon of life and the other is caused by suggestion; hypnosis. We shrug off not seeing the ketchup bottle, but a negative hallucination caused by suggestion, if left in place, can be very jarring, and will resolve itself soon enough when one bumps into that someone in front of them. Actually to NOT see someone, you have to see them first. It’s like when I say, “Don’t think of a purple elephant” you have to think of a purple elephant first, then you move on to thinking about something else because that’s the instruction. People call me periodically and ask me to cause them to forget someone. This is usually because someone has hurt them emotionally or they long for a person they feel rejected by. In fact I can’t think of a time when it was for any other reasons. It’s 20 Healing Springs I #98 I June/July ‘18

always about the emotions they have connected with that person. It’s an anchor/trigger situation. Thinking of that person causes an emotion to well up inside them. It’s really the emotion, the pain, the resentment, the longing they don’t want in their life, isn’t it? In fact at a deep level they sense they have the right to remember that person without the feeling attached. And you know what, they’re right. The solution to their problem is to disconnect the emotion from the memory, not to cause a negative hallucination that that person doesn’t exist. To forget someone would be jarring. An old picture or conversation could cause a whole new issue. Causing false memories is not desirable for all kinds of reasons and a legitimate helping hypnotist won’t agree to do that. That’s why the solution is to empower the client to remember the person without those hurtful (or longing) feelings, if at all. Turn that memory into a purple elephant. Does anyone really have to think of a purple elephant? And how purple is it anyway, or was it really? Memory isn’t stored perfectly formed somewhere inside us. Every time we internally search for a memory, we have permission to make it a purple elephant and change it a little because we have the power to do that. Our human gift of imagination is so powerful. Through the use of hypnosis, heightened suggestibility, we have permission to create a new association and disconnect the feeling from the old memory. Those old feelings have done their job. They’ve sent a message and the message was delivered. Now is the time to move on, look forward, and bring new positive experiences into view. Yes, you have to be safe and feel protected, you have to know that you are out of harm’s way. You have to be connected with your own sense of self-esteem and worthiness. These are the things that will cause you to be free to remember to forget that old feeling so that the memory of the person won’t even matter. Or if this notion to forget someone is about an overwhelming longing for someone, a memory of that person, with a purple elephant tattooed on their forehead perhaps, will put things in

But, you’re thinking, “Hey, they didn’t have a purple elephant on them.” That’s right, and that’s why you do have the power to put it there when you need it. You can’t feel the same when you put it there. You may even laugh at how powerful this is because it’s so natural and so easy to have fun with. “But they hurt me.” Yes, and now you have the right to be free, don’t you? Understand that the purple elephant has now become your empowerment tool. You are free to use it or not. If you do, you’ll feel a sense of freedom and control. If you don’t, you can always begin to forget to remember about it anyway and just let it happen. Then that sense of freedom can come to you now or once you really think you’ve forgotten all about it or not. It’s odd how it just begins to happen anyway. You can forget what you came for but who can forget a purple elephant? Hypnosis is a wonderful tool. I hope you’ll consider using it with the help of a certified hypnotist to get what you want in life. You deserve it because we can remember you can even dissolve the connection to that old feeling if you want to. Use a purple elephant. Our Mothers, Ourselves Redux

by Patricia A. Nugent with Catherine Ruggiero Lanci and Sue Sweet Van Hook lmost a decade ago, two clinical psychologists published the book Our Mothers, Ourselves to help adult children better understand the ways in which their mothers influenced them—and how they might set a new self-determined course. Contributors to my anthology, Before They Were Our Mothers: Voices of Women Born Before Rosie Started Riveting, have shown me that the process of writing their mothers’ stories, in their mothers’ voices, was a very powerful tool for assessing the past and moving forward.

A

I interviewed two of the authors who are in various stages of healing—for different reasons. One year after her mother died, Catherine Ruggiero Lanci continues to grieve the loss of their treasured relationship defined by love, admiration, and respect for each other as they both aged. Almost twenty years following her mother’s death, Sue Sweet Van Hook struggles to understand the lack of warmth between them. She felt respected but not loved by her mother. Cathy’s and Sue’s responses to questions posed provide valuable insight into the catharsis offered by writing authentically, speaking one’s truth, and seeing situations from another’s point of view. Below, they further explain how the process and product have helped them heal their respective wounds.

Last year, you responded to a Call for Submissions to write a story about your mother from her perspective in her voice. What was your first reaction? Cathy: I immediately recognized that this was the time to start writing—I had to do it for her. I believed Mom was reaching out and pushing me into the literary world. What a perfect opportunity to tell others about this incredible woman. Sue: I wanted to honor my mother by telling a piece of her story. It was a way to bring her back to life and to mend our relationship.

How did you decide which incident to write about? Cathy: At an early age, my mother was a person with strong convictions who stood up for herself, regardless of the consequences. Harold, who had bullied her as a child, was also part of my childhood because I’d heard the story so often that I felt I knew him. Sue: First, I created a timeline of family members who were part of my mother’s first two decades of life. Then, I remembered my cousin had recently sent me three family letters, one of which was from my grandmother to my mother. That letter showed me that her mother had taken away what little control she may have

(518) 891-1489 had over her own destiny. No wonder our relationship was flawed.

What was the hardest part about writing in her voice—especially in present tense? Cathy: I wanted to reclaim her innocence and tell her story as an eight-year-old. It was very emotional to embody that voice and envision spending a day in a dark closet. I found myself in tears at times because of the injustice of her punishment. Sue: Two years before she died, she’d shared pieces of her life with me, up through marriage—even the part about not wanting to marry my father. While that can be difficult for a child to hear, it explained so much about their relationship. To write in her voice was a healing experience for both of us because it was an acknowledgement that our marriages shared similarities. She married to appease her dying mother; I married because I’d lost an ovary at age 26, and I wanted to have children. Both of us made our unions work. Writing in her voice conveyed her anguish and pain, as well as my own.

What did you learn about your mother by writing this? Cathy: I now understand why she told her story over and over to whomever would listen. She didn’t want another person to endure such humiliation. She turned adversity into opportunities for growth. She was guided by resilience, grit, and empathy: Stand up and speak out for your rights. Question authority. Respect your roots. Sue: I learned so much about who my mother was, especially in

the context of first-generation Swedish and Dutch immigrants to attend college, the loss of a favorite aunt to suicide when the stock market crashed, and a mother diagnosed with fatal tuberculosis during her sophomore year. My mother became the best she could be, managed the most she could handle, and excelled despite her circumstances.

What did you learn about yourself? Cathy: I’ve been guided by her principles and mothered my children in the same manner. But, most importantly, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to learn a new craft, such as writing. This is enormously significant if it’s lived untouched within you. Sue: To relive her first two decades while writing this story was energizing for me. I learned how many qualities my mother and I share, and I now cherish them. I’d followed in her footsteps and became a teacher. Like her, I’ve been a leader in school, work, and the community. I’m a naturalist, and my mother was an intrepid outdoorswoman – from deep sea fishing, to digging clams, to camping with me on the beach on a whim when the moon was full, as was her age. Instead of dwelling on past resentments for the hellish circumstance of two parents arguing incessantly, I’ve come to appreciate the moments we laughed and cried together.

How does it feel to speak as her when you do readings in public? Cathy: I feel great joy and am honored to represent her. It empowers me because she would have wholeheartedly supported this project. I can feel her encouraging me to get her message Healing Springs I #98 I June/July ‘18

www.healingspringsjournal.com out. I know that she’d be delighted to know that strangers are reading her story and gaining strength from it. Sue: I’m overwhelmed by emotions—sadness, pride, and gratitude -- when I read her story in public. I feel I’m channeling her directly, and I hold that intention prior to the event.

How has it helped you heal in whatever way was needed? Cathy: My healing began when I wrote Mom's eulogy, highlighting her values and beliefs. My story, The Apology, allowed me to understand more profoundly where these were first formed. The healing continued because I grieved her death in a constructive way. In both cases, writing was the vehicle for revelation and transformation. Sue: I know from my Healing Touch professional practice that when we heal something in ourselves, it is also healed forward and backward. When I’ve been a client on the table, I’ve seen ancestral women in my lineage back four generations. I had also witnessed my mother, blind and failing, speak these words to my eldest daughter: “Lucy, I love you for how you love your mother.” The chain of feeling unloved from one mother to a daughter, extending back two generations or more, has been broken.

final gift to me. And by writing her story, I’ve made her immortal, which is my final gift to her. Sue: Getting in touch with our mothers automatically gets us in touch with ourselves. We were present as eggs forming in our mother while inside our grandmother’s womb. Whatever emotions our grandmothers experienced are logged in our cell membranes, too. The lineage is continual and is never broken between mothers and daughters. As women reclaiming our places in the world today, it is important to understand where we’ve come from. Writing Letter Never Sent in my mother’s voice has hastened this process for me.

Why was this process important?

Cathy: I never had a sense that any aspect of our relationship needed fixing. But, in writing my mother’s story, I had to reach deep inside myself to excavate what touched my soul. The underlying foundational emotion was one of gratitude. I always felt I wanted to write, but never pursued it. The opportunity to write for her, about her, made this possible. I believe it was her

Stay Youthful…

Practice Qigong! by Kate Kellman ging gracefully is a fine art, one few have mastered. Most people are dragged into it, against their well, kicking and screaming. Yet, we all know those women and men who reveal their age, causing everyone in the room to gasp in surprise. “No! You’re 55? I thought you were in your 30s.” Words we all want to hear, but few seldom do.

A

In the ancient Taoist texts and Chinese mythology, there are a group of people called the Immortals. Eight men and seven “sisters” (women) became adepts and were able to live forever, high on a mountain top in the Bohai Sea. They achieved immortality through proper diet, moderate lifestyles, breathing techniques and qigong – simple movements designed to enhance the flow of qi or energy in the body. The alchemical process, the “elixir” produced by the combination of right living, allowed them to take the human experience to another level. They became one with the Tao while still being grounded in earthly life, walking between heaven and earth. Many modern-day Taoists seek to emulate these masters. Not necessarily to live forever but to achieve a longer life, filled with health and vitality. Within this practice is the concept of qigong. The benefits of qigong are numerous. Basically, it moves the blood but, unlike exercise, the blood is moving with a higher, subtle substance called qi. They are synonymous, blood being the physical form of the energetic force that communicates with all things. When both are moving properly throughout the body, perfect health can be achieved. Not only is health maintained with proper qi flow, but youth is also restored. Think of it like an internal body wash. Instead of showering and cleaning our skin and hair, we are taking an energetic bath on the inside! Many practitioners also bathe their

skin in the qi accumulated on their hands while practicing tai chi or qigong, rubbing their hands on their face after doing their daily practice to maintain their youthful appearance. It’s also important to note that doing qigong is not the only ingredient in the Vitality Recipe Book. Right living is just as important. Eating according to the precepts of Chinese Medicine, which looks at food much differently, daily movement or exercise, proper sleep, good elimination of the body’s toxins and waste products are just some of the foundational aspects important for good qi flow. Mental attitude also plays a huge part. Examining our belief system and becoming friends with our mind. Balancing our emotions to stay more grounded. Breathing, breathing, breathing. And more breathing. The breath is vital to our health and is, often, ignored in modern-day culture. The above list might feel overwhelming, at first. It’s not the way of today’s world where most people eat on the go, veg out in front of the television at night, are lucky if they can squeeze in a walk at lunchtime, and typically overindulge in most things. It’s a fast-paced existence with many stressors taxing our brains and our seesaw emotions. Yet, living a simpler life, taking care of our bodies and our minds, opting for nature over Facebook, etc., can extend our longevity and youthful appearance. It will make us happier, healthier and more productive with whatever creative or personal pursuits we engage in. It gives us a sense of peace. Peace of mind. Peaceful body. Peace within the home and our communities. Quite simply, it feels good. It’s a breath of fresh air in our chaotic world. All we need to do is make the decision to start. Once we begin to change our lives in empowering ways, we will feel and look younger. Happiness and joy and a loving smile are the best makeup we can wear. It helps us to turn the light around, to shine forth all the beauty within. Kate Kellman, MMQ, is a certified Master of Medical Qigong, studying to obtain her Doctorate (DMQ) under Dr. Ted J. Cibik, DMQ, Chinese Physician (Zhong Yi), ND and Taoist Priest. She also studies Taoism with Dr. Cibik in the Immortal Mind Program. Kate has a private practice in Saratoga Springs and Burnt Hills and teaches classes locally in several locations around the Capital District.
