We will discuss on a recorded phone call the "ingredients" of your soul and what blocks I cleared. "Words like authentic and REAL get tossed around a lot in spiritual marketing these days, but please know I don’t use them lightly. There is a genuine-ness about Katrina which is a true comfort when navigating numinous work. As someone who has been on a spiritual path for quite awhile, I enjoyed the new layers uncovered in our recent Soul Realignment Session which I found to be both insightful and useful." — Suzanne Wiggington, Arizona

Shamanic Reiki Sessions Give your body the opportunity to speak with a Shamanic Reiki treatment. Our bodies hold emotions and hidden fears, with Katrina as a guide allow those to see and know the light.

Individualized Modern Shamanic Journey This is done to access your inner wisdom. We already have our answers, a journey is a good way to learn what they are. We can also do a journey to the soul of your pet; alive or deceased. Give me a call or email to discuss further.

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you The other day I was with Tom, my horse, in a low section of the farm where the grass grows lush. It was twilight and peaceful. While Tom was grazing, there was a group of birds flitting around. With the low light I was trying to identify them by their quantity and movement rather than by sight. My attention was soft and taking in all that surrounded us. While listening to the small birds, I heard the leaves rustle off in the woods. This was obviously not any of the birds, so I slowly turned to locate what the originator of that sound was and found a doe. She was standing still on the edge of the woods quietly gazing at us. Not wanting to startle her, I subdued my excitement and nodded a hello. Tom continued to graze, while the doe and I gazed at each other. It was an honor to be seen by such wild beauty. After about 5 minutes of this open exchange, more leaves began to rustle behind the doe. I could not see who was there. For whatever reason, however, this got Tom antsy. While he is a laidback guy most of the time, he can get riled up quickly in certain circumstances and that was beginning to happen. I was already holding his lead rope; because when he is in this area he is more susceptible to fear (elsewhere on the farm, I flip the lead rope over his back and give him freedom.) By now, he was jigging around me while the doe continued to simply watch. Wildlife is less fearful of humans when a horse, another prey animal, is with them (why I’d love to do an African safari by horseback.) So, even with Tom trotting around, the doe continued to be unconcerned by us. The doe eventually bounded through the open space, slowly and gracefully to what seemed a predetermined place 20 feet away. By then, Tom had had enough and continued to tell me he was ready to leave, not desperately, but with conviction. Regardless of being hesitant to leave the connection with Doe, he and I began our walk up the hill. Luckily he was willing to slow down for my short two legs and me. A study in dissimilar species working out their differences. The next day the sun was setting while I was driving home from the barn. I love capturing the sun in pictures and was frustrated to be driving and unable to do so. I had stopped earlier to take a few, yet as the sun continued to lower it became increasingly intoxicating. So, rather than turn down our road, I kept driving in hopes of finding a place to pull over to photograph its beauty. No luck, it kept going down while remaining behind the trees in the places available to pull over. When the sun was totally set, I turned around to go back home. As I pulled back out onto the road, there was a buck on the left. He was stunning with 4 points. I was already going slow, but came to a stop and as I did he ran across the road, bounding into the woods. Then this morning, my dog Z and I were walking down the road on our way to the woods. Z doesn’t walk on a leash and was off to my left. I had my head down, not paying attention to what was ahead. When walking my awareness always includes Z, so when she stopped in her tracks and got focused, I looked up. As my eyes followed her gaze there was another doe staring at us. On their own, each of these experiences is enough for me to feel touched by the deer. While deer are not uncommon, being “touched” by one—any wild animal—is a grand experience for me. So, later while doing a meditation that asked me to think of an animal encounter, the first deer came to mind. The doe then told me; “Do not live in fear. Do, instead, allow fear to be inspiration to take action. When deer feel concern, we run. That’s it, nothing more to it. When you feel fear, allow it to communicate that something needs to be done. When we run from a threat, it’s simply a response to the situation at hand and when it’s over we let it be over. We urge you to do the same. Act when it feels right to, or stand and eat when that feels appropriate. Beware not to get stuck in either in the movement of change or the stillness of peace. Simply act according to the circumstances at hand. Use all your senses along with your thinking mind. Humans have forgotten how intelligent their bodies are and rely too much on their thinking mind. Meanwhile the self-organization of life runs through and communicates with their bodies, so they rarely hear the voice of the All. Hence, their excessive disconnection as evidenced by behaviors and emotions that are negatively affecting the Whole.” Hmmm…. Interesting. I have often felt prickled by the idea of living fearlessly. To do so, would suggest we need to shut down our most natural emotions. Yet, I’m not sure that I’ve listened to it as a sign to take action. More likely I get the feeling and simply wait it out, knowing this too shall pass. And funny enough, it does. However, I suppose that is what Doe meant by getting stuck in the stillness of peace. Do you listen to the “self-organization” of life? Or are the thoughts in your head too loud? Thinking is certainly useful. However, if we quiet ourselves enough, at least for a period of time each day, the song of the connected world may sing loud enough for us to dance with it.

Carols drawn from Celtic, African American, and Early American traditions are the trademark of the concert at Christ Church, Ballston Spa, on Sunday and Monday, December 17 and 18.

6

Healing Springs I December ‘17—January ‘18

The concert is anchored by folk music legends John Kirk and Trish Miller of Greenfield Center with Field Horne and Theresa LaGattuta-Bruno of Saratoga Springs and Kristin McCabe of Charlton. This year’s special guests are Joel Rosenberger of Saratoga Springs, Dan Berggren of Ballston Spa, Rick Bunting of Bainbridge, and Carolyn Waters of Natick, Massachusetts. While African American spirituals, Irish ballads, and Shape Note hymns are the majority of the music performed, each year some modern carols are included, such as Berggren’s “Road to Bethlehem,” a nativity story about fatherhood, or Jim Boyes’ “Meadowhall Carol,” which explores the issue of homelessness at the holidays. The ensemble has produced three compact disks. The newest is just published and all three will be on sale at the performances. The national folk music magazine Dirty Linen called the first CD “a spirited collection of holiday songs that hail from off the beaten path. If you want different music to make things festive, this is the compilation for you.” The concert is free and takes place by candlelight at 7:30 PM at Christ Church, on the corner of Route 50 (Church Avenue) and Route 67 (West High Street) in Ballston Spa. The public is invited for festive refreshments afterward. “Lessons and Carols” has been presented annually since 1994. For further information, call 885-1031.

The

Power

Mushrooms of

by Kathryn Kos n recent years, traditional plant-based medicines are gaining more and more attention with medical practitioners. Mushrooms being at the top of the list for their many amazing health benefits. Many forms of mushrooms have been used throughout the centuries in Ancient Chinese herbal medicine, with well over 200 different species used in therapeutic capacities throughout the years. There is a great deal of recent research surrounding mushrooms and their potential therapeutic benefits for a variety of conditions such as cancer, digestive health conditions, liver conditions, and autoimmune issues.

I

The key component in these healing mushrooms is psilocybin. Mushrooms containing psilocybin boost immune health through stimulating the production of T-lymphocytes and also the production of killer cells.1 In his book, Medicinal Mushrooms, The Essential Guide, Powell discusses how medicinal mushrooms work, as well as many of the various health conditions that medicinal mushrooms can help with. According to Powell, Mushrooms are part of the fungal kingdom. As such they are more closely related to humans and other members of the animal kingdom than to plants and, partly because of this relative evolutionary closeness, many of the compounds they produce show physiological activity in humans as well as other animals. The compounds that medicinal mushrooms produce, give the mushrooms an advantage in the microorganism community. These compounds discourage competitive organisms, yet have a pronounced effect on the human body. They ward off viruses, bacterial infections, and ‘bad’ fungal overgrowths such as candida. Medicinal mushrooms are antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral in nature. Humans and animals have evolved alongside these fungal communities, and this benefits our immune system regulation. Polysaccharides are the main compound found in these mushrooms. These polysaccharides help to downregulate the proinflammatory immune response for individuals with compromised immune systems.1 Therefore, there is a reduction of overall inflammation in the body, and a modulation of the immune system. Some immunological changes triggered by mushroom polysaccharides include: • Activation of immune macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes • Increased antibody production • Increased interferon production • Increased immune activity against many different cancers • Inhibition of tumors • Reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines • Inhibition of prostoglandin synthesis1

Many of the mushrooms that are considered medicinal, are also delicious tasting! And the health benefits remain, even after cooking. Each medicinal mushroom family has different medicinal effects. Below is a review of three edible, medicinal mushroom types, and the role they can play in our health.

Up until recently, Western medicine had not incorporated these amazing mushrooms, but as a new medical paradigm emerges, the introduction of these mushrooms to the masses will continue to prove how extremely beneficial they are for a variety of health conditions. Strengthen Your Liver by Letting Go of the Past by Kate Kellman, MMQ n Chinese Medicine, each of our organs has both a positive and negative psycho-emotional aspect. When we focus on positive emotions, we can strengthen or tonify our organs and build our Qi, or life force energy. Always dwelling on negative thoughts and behaviors can deplete our Qi, just as suppression of emotions can cause a funny thing to happen – those feelings go deep inside our bodies to find a safe place to hang out until we’re ready to deal with them.

I

For example, the lungs hold grief, loss, and sadness so when we are unable to release these emotions, after many years, they can cause issues with the lungs like chronic bronchitis or other respiratory problems. Their positive aspect is courage. When we overcome grief or sadness by being brave, we strengthen the Qi in our lungs and re-balance that system. In the same way, the kidneys hold fear. If we are afraid of something but face our fear, learning the lesson of why we are so scared, we activate that wise part of ourselves and the positive aspect of the kidneys. The kidneys can then move into balance, releasing those negative emotions. The heart can also become off kilter when we are stressed or anxious, or even if we become too excited on a regular basis. The

balanced aspect of the heart is calm and tranquility, so when we are at peace with ourselves, we tonify the heart, avoiding issues in that area. Stress is often correlated with heart disease, so being a workaholic can lead to heart problems if we aren’t able to offset work with some chill time. The spleen is about overthinking and worry, in Chinese Medicine, so when our minds are too active, we often have digestive issues. The balanced aspect is trust – trusting that “everything happens for a reason” and will work out in the end. The liver is an interesting organ in Chinese Medicine because it has two functions. Just like the other Yin organs, the liver has a positive and negative psycho-emotional aspect. Anger and its related attributes like jealousy, frustration, and bitterness, if not released, will cause an imbalance in our livers. Love is the positive aspect. Consider a time when you were angry with someone then said, “I’m sorry. I forgive you. I love you.” This act of forgiveness balances our livers, helping us to let go of our internal conflict. Another problem for our livers is when we hold onto the past. This is not just in relation to anger, either. Any time we cling to something, even if that means a good memory, we can affect our livers, according to the Chinese way of thinking. Consider a situation where a close family member dies. Not letting go of grief, after the normal grieving process, can put a strain on our liver. This can lead to insomnia, as well.

We wave at one another, smile, and remember the happy moments we shared. Then, we keep on going, letting the ship bring us to a new adventure... I don’t believe our departed loved ones want us to make ourselves sick with our grieving.” When we lose someone close, it is a severe blow to our entire system. It’s not an easy thing to get over, but it’s important to allow ourselves to release the sadness and the pain. “Time heals all wounds,” and it does. Yet, the way we deal with our grief can be of vital importance to our health. Society encourages us to memorialize our cherished relatives. We are often viewed as loving, caring family members when we mourn, and “bad” people if we handle it too well. Moving through grief is not supported or valued in our culture. This places a heavy burden on our liver, energetically. It creates imbalance when we hold onto situations where we perceive loss of any kind including jobs, our marriage, friendships, a dream, or anything else that affects us deeply. Holding onto resentment over unfair situations, old grievances, arguments and disagreements, toxic relationships, pets who have passed, petty annoyances, etc., can cause our liver to become vulnerable to disease after many years of build-up. So, how do we let go of things from our past that we long to hold onto? How do we move through situations that don’t empower us, or forgive and forget perceived wrongs? In the case of grief, one tool is to see our loved one on a beautiful exotic island, and we are passing by on a cruise ship. We wave at one another, smile, and remember the happy moments we shared. Then, we

keep on going, letting the ship bring us to a new adventure. Somehow, I don’t believe our departed loved ones want us to make ourselves sick with our grieving. If they could speak, they would tell us to move along and just remember the happy times, not dwelling on our pain. This same technique can apply to all forms of loss when we find it difficult to let go. Maybe we aren’t ready to move on, and that’s okay. Just know that the sooner you can make peace with your situation and find some sort of resolution, the more your liver will thank you. When we activate the positive aspect of our livers, which is love, by seeing our situation through the eyes of compassion, we can often come to that place of inner peace and lead a happy, healthy, and productive life. The Secret Underneath

Black Underwear

A Play of Self Discovery by Sarah van Rijsewijk ost women can open up their top dresser drawer and find a pair or two of their most prized and risque black underwear. A symbol of their secret lives, their darker side and maybe even a symbol of regret or longing—our black undergarments can tell a pretty deep story.

M

How perfect then that an enthusiastic, wise Life Coach. Dineen Carta , of Waterford has used these shadowed under garments as the theme for her uniquely created one-woman-play Black Underwear.

Not be your normal night out at the theater…

The concept of her production is what she calls Integrative Theatre Therapy. Integrative Theatre Therapy is a form of Life Coaching and entertainment. The play is an hour in length with a brief intermission. In the second act, the stage will be opened up to a select few willing participants who are open to sharing their story and applying the lessons from the first act of the play. The goal… to allow both the participants and the audience the opportunity to heal and learn from her protagonist. Dineen Carta is the owner of Unveil Your Voice Life Coaching and the author of Loving The Ache—A Woman’s Journey. Her book is a published collection of poems and has received beautiful feedback from other souls who have used her words to heal. She is an experienced actress and highly respected Life Coach who loves nothing more than serving and giving back to her community. Dineen came up with the idea for her Integrative Theatre Therapy production when she was asked to help others through her Life Coaching skills. Originally she was asked to tour as a speaker and when she realized the personal incongruence of teaching in this manner, her mind got to work on creating something more relatable. That’s when acting surfaced. Black Underwear is her own created production that follows a young woman, Sunny, along her journey as a woman and some of the difficult emotional situations that she encounters. The production is a ‘one woman play’ and Dineen plays the role of Sunny. Like so many of us, the situations Sunny finds herself in have her at odds between her mind, her instinct and her heart. The play is a nod to some of Dineen’s own life experiences, the poems she has composed, the lessons she has learned, her hurts, pains and triumphs. Its goal is to captivate the audience and envelope them in the realization that many of us have indeed been where Sunny has been. The play is really relevant because most of us do not always experience that alignment in our mind, our instinct and our hearts. So we watch Sunny’s discord and are able to detach and learn from her experiences. Dineen says, “viewing Sunny is a way to watch

Those words rang so clear from her heart and right into mine. The lessons Dineen is teaching us are truly Universal. We are not asked to be perfect. We are guided to learn from our lives. Black Underwear will help us do just that. It’s a call to truly accept ourselves, to stand in our vulnerability and be open to the steps that come next – allowing lasting transformation to take place.

Photo of Play Black Underwear and catch up… watch how our mind works, how we struggle at times for alignment and understanding, and how we hope to integrate all the components in our life. We watch how she evolves and unites with herself and the potential that comes from her.” The play has a very strong pull toward finding balance in the world as a woman. Dineen has noticed in her life and in her Coaching that a lot of women have pressed their own desires down deep and have forgotten to be who they are. The play is geared towards men and women… specifically women who want to understand themselves better and men who realize it’s important to understand the women in their lives. Dineen hopes to help her audience find harmony, to help them unite with one another, to see Sunny’s experiences and see their own experiences and most importantly to find self compassion. The Interactive portion of the production is designed to create a connection and dialogue between Dineen and her audience. She hopes to guide 1 or 2 willing participants to explore the inner characters that arise in their own experiences. Her goal is to reveal the limitations and true strengths of these aspects of ourselves. Her audience will begin to ask themselves, How can I find self compassion? How are the situations in my life similar to that of Sunny’s? Dineen knows that helping people embrace what they previously conceived of as their ‘faults’ is a major part of this process, and it is the biggest way to help stimulate growth and enlightenment. She wisely told me during our first interview, “The way we transform ourselves is by allowing all parts of ourselves to come to the table.”

The first live performance of Black Underwear took place on Saturday November 4th at 7pm at the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs. The admission was $25 per person at the door and it is a very intimate event - with seating available for around 50. The feedback received from her premiere show revealed it to be honest, real and enlightening. Several attendees were moved to tears by Dineen’s raw performance. She was extremely relatable, vulnerable and loving. She successfully activated the emotions of her audience and launched them into the realm of compassion and self acceptance. Dineen is hoping to spread her message anywhere it is able to be received. Since birthing her production she has been approached by many interested parties who are planning to host her play and help those around them discover what lies underneath. She is available to come to almost any venue, whether it’s a literal stage, a coffee shop, a Women’s shelter, or even an intimate performance live in your home for some of your closest friends. Her message is simple… she has been there and she wants to help us all come to terms with our secrets. She wants to honor the darker things we keep hidden away. She wants to help us heal and bravely puts her own experiences on center stage as the process begins. She reminds us all, your Black Underwear is beautiful. Dineen is an intuitive, spiritually-inspired Transformational Life Coach, Energy Healer, Poet, Author, and Performer. She is a champion of women finding and living their authentic selves. The goal for women, she says, contrary to what we've been told, is not to be "perfect", but to be real. Dineen's inspiration comes from her own life as she lost her physical voice for a number of years and was told by specialists, it would never return. She decided to heal herself, and discovered that she had lost her true voice because she had stopped using it in her life. She regained her voice and now turns her healing into healing and empowerment for others. Visit her website; unveilyourvoicelifecoaching.com. December ‘17—January ‘18 I Healing Springs 13

Jikiden Reiki

®

Nothing More, Nothing Less

by Luci Carpenter hat is different about Jikiden Reiki®? I get this question posed to me on almost a daily basis. And while it is not a difficult question to answer, the answer is one that many tend to misunderstand and interpret as a competition between styles of Reiki practice. It is not a competition. It is a difference in modality of practice and cultural understanding of the practice.

W

The differences found in the Jikiden Reiki® practice of Reiki stem from the Japanese cultural understanding that there is no need to assist, add, improve upon or otherwise change Reiki and that which flows naturally. While, in “western” styles of Reiki practice, the addition of crystals, chanting, and symbols is seen as beneficial, inherent and, at times, necessary to the practice. “Western” styles of Reiki push to improve upon and increase the rate and quality of the energy flow and to improve upon Reiki’s inherent healing benefits. This is not “wrong” per se, but unnecessary. Just as Reiki complements allopathic (Western) medicine, crystals and such complement Reiki. These additions do not change the Reiki or alter it in anyway. Crystals and such, provide their own unique energy which, like Reiki, complements the energy already at work within our body system. Reiki is a Universal energy, a natural creation. It’s very definition is “soul energy” – Rei = Soul, Ki = Energy, one of the highest forms of blessing from the Divine/Universe. How does one portend to improve on this natural energy, “soul energy”? In the Jikiden Reiki® tradition, the premise is in “keeping it simple”, utilizing and honoring the practice as it was created and intended by Usui Sensei. Allowing the Reiki to flow as it naturally does without direction, without intention on the part of the practitioner. The practitioner is nothing more than the conduit for Reiki. Reiki, “soul energy” is derived from the universe, as humans, we are not in a position to improve upon that which is comes from

a higher source, which is part of our soul and intrinsic to our being. Why would we want to? Have efforts to improve upon nature and things of nature ever really brought us lasting benefit? Look at what has happened to our attempts at improving nature’s bounty of food sources—pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, preservatives, GMO’s- all, while having done some good in the short term, are wreaking havoc in our lives in the long term (but that is a discussion for another time). Don’t get me wrong, I do not equate crystals, chanting, and the other additions that pop up in some Reiki circles as detrimental and harmful to the individual receiving or giving the Reiki treatment, I am just pointing out, that it is not always necessary to add more and more, and try to improve upon that which is natural and innate within our being. My point is, Reiki is a natural gift of energy that resides within and around all of us. Usui Sensei created a practice and system of learning intended to make Reiki accessible to all. It does not require the knowledge of crystal energy, special series of symbols, or sequences of chants. It requires no more than an open hand, and an open heart to share this healing energy with one another. “Reiki is Reiki is Reiki” (as Arjava Sensei would say). “Soul Energy” is just that, it cannot be changed or improved upon. It is what it is. Complement it if you feel the need, but for me, I choose to follow the Jikiden Reiki® tradition to “Keep it simple”, nothing more nothing less. Just allow the Reiki to flow, and the healing processes to unfold. Luci Carpenter’s Reiki journey started in 2005 during a time of great stress and personal tragedy. She experienced her first Reiki session in a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion and needed something to provide relief and healing. She had found what she was seeking. Reiki became a “tool” to help her through each day. She became a Reiki “Master” in the Western tradition. Reiki and meditation became daily tools to support, and guide her through grief and life. In 2011, she attended a Jikiden Reiki® Seminar with Frank ArjavaPetter, Vice Chairman of the Jikiden Reiki® Institute of Japan. There, she felt she “came home” to Reiki. In 2014, she completed the Jikiden Reiki® Shihan (Teacher) Seminar. LightWorks Reiki offers Jikiden Reiki® Sessions and Training Seminars and is certified through the Jikiden Reiki® Institute of Japan. Luci will be offering Jikiden Reiki® Shoden(Level 1) Seminar in Saratoga Springs, NY in January 2018. For information and registration, please contact Luci or visit www.LightWorksReikiNY.com

Hate Diets? You’re In Luck

Jikiden Reiki® Shoden Seminar With

Luci Carpenter, Shihan of the

Jikiden Reiki® Institute of Japan January 19th — 21st, 2018 Saratoga Springs, NY

by Suzanne Lynch id you ever lose weight, just to gain it all back, plus even more? Sound familiar? We’ve all been there.

D

Depravation and restriction never work. That’s why most of us who go on diets, even if we lose weight, gain it back, or gain even more.

The depressing truth:

• Right now 100 million Americans are on a diet, and the average dieter makes 4 or 5 attempts to lose weight per year. And yet, less than one percent of these attempts are successful, even in the short term. • Our current situation is that two-thirds of Americans are obese.

Our cultural approach to dieting is not working.

I suggest you take a radical step and refrain from “dieting” entirely—because, face it, it hasn’t worked. Instead, start thinking about what foods truly nourish you and help you feel fantastic. Loving yourself though better nourishment is a whole different approach than a dry, restrictive, limiting, or even punishing “diet”. It’s possible to enter into an utterly fresh, supportive new relationship with food.

IMAGINE…… IMAGINE

You listen to your body, honor it’s wisdom, and eat in a way that is satisfying, and delicious. You eat in a way that gives you plenty of non-stop energy AND makes you feel more vibrant and alive than you have in years.

It’s totally possible!

BUT, you’ll have to learn a new framework. You might need to take small steps. And, you’ll need to dance dynamically with this new framework as you learn to actually live your new approach to nourishing yourself. It can be a long journey, but over time, taking a compassionate approach to eating and food can create lasting change, ending the

dieting rollercoaster forever. Start small. If you, or someone you love, is struggling with health issues related to being overweight, try one or more of these tips to stop “dieting” and begin to create the framework needed to support your nourishment:

1

Concentrate on eating fresh, seasonal and local foods. Right now, in the northeast winter, this can be a tall order. There are plenty of root vegetables, as well as squash, cabbage, and winter greens, like kale. If you eat meat it’s a great time for warming soups and stews. Favor whole foods, instead of processed food.

2

Eat an earlier, lighter, dinner to create the conditions for healthy digestion that can lead to weight loss. Lighten your evening meal up a little, and be sure to eat a satisfying mid-day meal. You don’t need to make huge changes; in the evening, if you usually eat two desserts, cut down to one. This slowly begins to create a shift.

3

Start noticing how you feel after you eat. Notice what foods give you steady energy. Does an evening meal of soup help you feel more calm and grounded? Take some time at the end of the day to notice what you ate, and how much, or how little energy you had. It’s hard to believe, but starting small, with one or more of these tips, can lead to big changes in your health, your weight and in your life. Life’s too short not to feel nourished! Bedr oom Bedroom

Refr esh Refresh

by Brandon Dewyea uman Beings are a unique species: We have an entire room in our homes for the sole purpose of not being awake. Often, this doubles as our sanctuary from a hectic world with a stressful pace. Most of us are aware that having a bedroom which is cluttered or a catch all for items such as laundry bins, workout equipment, off season clothing, children's toys, hobby projects, and work related items do not really support a relaxing environment. Many do not intend to have their bedroom and closet space used in this manner and yet often it is exactly what happens. We set intentions. We get busy. We start tasks and then get pulled away—the reasons are endless.

H

While we can appreciate this is not the ideal way to live, we often are not aware of the potential toxins brewing in this space, the functionality and the emotional effects of being in this environment for extended periods of time. Temporary clutter is one thing. Yet when an area can effect our daily productivity level, quality of sleep, increase our stress, impact our mood and compromise our health it’s of value to make sure we are aware and explore tangible steps we can apply immediately. Unfortunately, our bedrooms can be a toxic bubble of VOCs, dust mites, mold and pollen. What you chose for interior finishes such as flooring, wall coatings, mattress, bedding accessories and fur-

It is important to approach your design options mindfully with attention to health and well-being in addition to aesthetics and function. Many times when we are using a space we can get so used to habits that we are not really aware the effects it can take. For instance, do you have to zig zag around two pieces of furniture to get to the hallway? When you are getting dressed each morning are you needing to sift through the clothes that do not fit you right now to reach the small selection that does? While these two examples are not life threatening, they do effect your efficiency and emotional well being and this together can take a toll. Your bedroom is arguably your most private space, and no matter how stressful or hectic your life becomes, there are a few simple steps you can do to make sure your bedroom remains your sanctuary.

Simple Steps You Can Apply Immediately

Wires. When you envision your perfect Zen-space, there’s very little chance that you imagine a mess of tangled computer wires, right? All of these have their place, yet in your bedroom, all they will do is serve to antagonize you and contribute to stress, or even insomnia.

Set an alarm for one hour and pull all items from your closet that are not within two sizes of your current clothing size. For instance, if you are currently a 10, then you would want to hold onto a few items for each category which are smaller and larger then a 10. Since our weight can fluctuate a spell and the fact that designers cuts/styles are different, it is helpful to have a few options on either side of your typical weight. Gather the items which are not going back in your closet and either make a plan then and there. Or, set a reminder for another day to revisit. Either way, remove the items out of the bedroom.

4

The color scheme you pick for your bedroom is crucial as well, since it will almost subliminally affect the way you feel when in the room. If you need to relax, consider using muted, earthy tones, while vibrant colors may help you to feel energized.

5

Make your bed every morning! It’s been scientifically proven that an organized space is a happy space while clutter causes stress. Start your day off in a productive way and return to a calm, cozy and tranquil space. Even if it’s just the bed to start!

With the newest research, we are now finding that lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain, poor performance on exams and in the workplace, delayed reaction time-as bad as being drunk, relationship problems and the inability of the body to heal.

W

Every cell of the body benefits from good quality sleep. The brain is able to work through the stress of the day, memory and recall improve, there is an increase in the ability to concentrate and decision making improves. When we reach the deepest levels of sleep, cells regenerate, anti-aging and growth hormones are emitted. While we all occasionally have trouble falling or staying asleep, if this cycle is allowed to go on for too long, it can cause dire effects not only physically but emotionally. We can become irritable, snap at others, become more forgetful. On top of this, the worries of chronic illness can also cause insomnia. Our goal should be to awaken before the alarm clock, feeling refreshed, with natural energy to take us through the day.

What would change if you were able to do this on a daily basis? There are skills that you can learn to achieve this state of wellbeing. During the months of December and January, Barbara Stevens of Stress Techniques, is offering sessions specifically focused on getting a good night’s sleep. P Q

I feel as though I have been wanting to hide from the world lately. Could I be experiencing PTSD, even though I haven't had a traumatic experience? Can alternative therapies help?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell

Your sentiment is one that I have been noticing quite a bit in recent years and I believe that we must respect it as an outcome of the extreme polarization of attitudes and the diminishment of civility around the globe. Whether you have been directly touched by the nearly weekly assaults on innocents, watch it on TV, or experience it in commutes on the roadways, we are aware that our safety is “potentially” subject to forces beyond our control. This leads to a heightened level of vigilance, which leads to fatigue and if unsupported could easily lend to a PTSD type feeling. We need to acknowledge that any and all traumatic experiences in our life are filed away in our subconscious mind, along with

sensations and responses or confusions around those events. When a new event occurs, the mind quickly reviews our history and stimulates a response, cataloging that experience with other similar ones. We even do that in the dream state. Some of our responses are reflexive and some are calculated, when we are able to see them coming far enough ahead. But recent events tell us that life is no longer as predictable as we once believed. We expected civility, consideration, concern. From my small perspective, empathy has taken a back seat to near narcissistic attitudes. That creates an antagonistic atmosphere where people become self centered, rather than recognizing our collective engagement within a fragile world. Those of you who possess a deep sensitivity to the world around you and feel an empathy for your welfare, your community, your country, the world, will feel the effects of those antagonisms within the collective. So how does one deal with the feeling of fear, vigilance, sadness, even a form of PTSD? To begin, any practice of mindfulness is essential. By that I mean that you respect the space that you inhabit, and extend that appreciation outward toward those around you. Appreciate each and every moment, the sun, the rain, the person who helps make your life easier. Show kindness and it will come back to you. Deeper sensitives will get support from massage, homeopathy, hypnosis, acupuncture, or any number of alternative modalities that support the body/mind and especially, don’t suppress or numb those feelings. Finding practitioners that listen to you and support you through understanding and compassion, will help you to feel that you are not alone. Trauma is an everyday experience, in both large and small ways, and it has a collective impact. Realizing that you are not alone, recognizing that there are ways to alleviate the effects, will benefit you and everyone around you.

Sue Van Hook; Healing Touch Practitioner

I feel as though I have been wanting to hide from the world lately. Could I be experiencing PTSD, even though I haven't had a traumatic experience? Can alternative therapies help? There are many ways in which we experience stress and handle it. Disengaging or hiding from the world is one of them. The energy treatments used in Healing Touch Therapy (HTT) help to reduce stress and rebalance the energetic body. Often energy is compromised in one chakra or another from serious trauma or repetitive messages one may have received, most often during childhood. HTT helps to identify the blockages or the mistaken beliefs about oneself, and to release them simply by using the breath. In an extreme case of trauma, the brain is overloaded by incoming information (neurotransmitter chemicals). The neurotransmitter molecules find other locations to take up residence in different organs and tissues. Often associated emotional memories from the trauma are retained outside the brain, until conscious effort allows them to be processed and released. You can imagine that parts of the body remain on high alert following severe trauma. This stored information causes stress and diverts energy away from the immune system function toward further protection against similar trauma. A specific technique in HTT is called Trauma Interview and Release. One or more years following a traumatic accident, the practitioner interviews the client, does a guided visualization to foster relaxation, and then asks the client to identify stored sensations so that they may be released with a simple touch of the hand. I would recommend this technique for anyone feeling traumatized. Sue Van Hook works with clients to identify and release emotional memories at the root of pain, dysfunction or illness by connecting to life force energy. She is certified as a Healing Touch practitioner and to teach Healing Touch to children ages 6-12. She incorporates various healing techniques learned through the study of Healing Touch, Craniosacral Therapy, Reiki, the Motz intuitive energy method, shamanic journeying and active dreamwork. A new study in Nature sought to determine how “seeing green” effects the brain by comparing how differing geographical characteristics impact its’ functioning. The study included 341 elderly participants of the Berlin Aging Study II. The researchers used a combination of three measurements of brain functioning and assessed the integrity of three brain regions: the amygdala, pACC, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). The results were analyzed and assessed in relationship to “measurements of enrichment in urban” life and “the effects of forest, urban green, water and wasteland around the home address.” Even though the study had some limitations, there was convincing evidence to support the authors’ conclusion: brains exposed to forests to have better integrity of their amygdala (“the emotional brain”).

Science Daily reported on the study’s finding as follows:

Indeed, the researchers found a relationship between place of residence and brain health: those city dwellers living close to a forest were more likely to show indications of a physiologically healthy amygdala structure and were therefore presumably better able to cope with stress. This effect remained stable when differences in educational qualifications and income levels were controlled for. However, it was not possible to find an association between the examined brain regions and urban green, water, or wasteland… Further longitudinal studies are necessary to accumulate evidence. Hmmm… did Jim Henson purposely pick a green fog for learning better on Sesame Street?

Why the Brain Prefers the Calm of Green Over the Excitement of City Life It’s been known by scientists that more enriched environments can create new neural connections and enhance brain function, aka neuroplasticity. This could lead many to assume that the nov-

elty of urban living could be a cognitively stimulating experience, but this high-paced life seems to come with a tradeoff. Urban environments also tend to be more stressful and noisy, and both are detriments to optimal cognitive health. Studies have demonstrated that stress alters the functioning of the hippocampus, a component of the brain believed to be involved in memory, emotion, and learning. Stress has also been shown to interfere with different levels of brain processing. On the other hand, it has been revealed that green spaces provide health and mood benefits. Many innately sense this and ancient practices took advantage of this connection. This traditional wisdom received scientific validation from several studies that demonstrated how the practice of “forest bathing” can lower cortisol, “the stress hormone,” and enhance immune function.

Essential Oils on the Brain

The neuroanatomy of smell is connected to the amygdala. To put it in geek terms, olfaction possesses reciprocal axonal connections with the primary emotion areas, which include the amygdala, hippocampus, and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). When I went to my functional medicine conference on neuroplasticity, I was elated to discover the potential of essential oils for optimizing the brain. In fact, several of the experts have already been using them for inducing rehabilitation of the brain in certain conditions. Beyond aroma, essential oils are secondary metabolites that effect mood, cognitive functioning, and have stress-relieving effects. Essential oils specifically have been shown to impact hormonal and biochemical pathways involved in cognition and alter brain waves as measured by EEG patterns. Lavender oil is a “universal oil” that got its nickname for influencing many of these factors synergistically.

Diffusing for Amygdala Integrity-Tricking the Brain to “Sniff Green”

As the holiday season approaches, and the fall schedules get tighter, we tend to focus on keeping our body’s strong and healthy. However, why not take some time to diffuse some fall

favorites to protect our brain and enhance its processing during the spirit of the season. We will also be receiving all the other wellness benefits of essential oils! We have been blessed with tools to support our physical and emotional health during a time when both may be tested to the limits. Maybe with a little diffusing of Black Spruce essential oil or Christmas Spirit,™ we can nurture a space for a healthier, happier, and calmer holiday.

What Animals Teach Us about Spiritual Growth by Karlene Stange, DVM, author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals ne evening, I found a cricket in my sink. He was missing a leg. I gathered him in a tissue to carry him outside. Just before the door, the cricket dropped to the floor, so I opened the door and he crawled out. As I closed the door, I looked out the window and saw a frog on the door step. I had never seen a frog on my doorstep before. With one hop, the frog ate the cricket. It was as if the frog was waiting for me to feed him. After my shock and awe had passed, I spent some time reflecting on the meaning of this event.

Mice have very limited vision, seeing only a short distance before them — just as we humans focus on our own little worlds. One day, a frog gave jumping mouse the medicine of jumping. The mouse jumped so high that he saw the Sacred Mountain. From then on, jumping mouse could not forget what he saw, and he set out to find the Sacred Mountain. The same is true for people who connect with Spirit. Once we know there is more than the mundane physical world, we are drawn toward Spirit — it cannot be ignored. Along his travels, jumping mouse encountered other animals in need of help. To save them, he fed them his eyes. In other words—he let go of his limited way of perceiving. Jumping mouse became blind until he was eaten by eagle. Then his spirit awoke again, and he was able to see far and wide as an eagle.

The incident presented a picture of veterinary medicine. We veterinarians want every animal to heal and be well. However, in spite of our best intentions, animals die. Our egos insist we have control and are to blame — or someone else is. When in reality, the world beyond our egoic viewpoints handles matters perfectly.

Buddhism describes spiritual growth as the path to Buddhahood. The Jataka Tales are Buddhists folk stories about animals who sacrificed themselves to help others on this path. In each tale, an animal dies to help feed or protect another. The stories end with the Buddha explaining that he was that animal in a former life, illustrating how self-sacrifice sets one on the path of spiritual growth. Rather than lamenting the cricket’s dismemberment and death, I feel amazed at the cocreation that occurred. The cricket was at the end of his life and sacrificed itself on the path to higher consciousness — cricket was reborn in a frog and can jump again; the frog got a nice snack, and I received a valuable lesson! Instead of feeling guilty and lamenting the demise of the cricket, I see the beauty of the cycle of life.

O

First of all, both the physical and the energetic life-force live on. Science tells us as much: energy is neither created nor destroyed. Life merely transforms into another state of being — ice melts into water that evaporates as steam, only to condense into water and freeze again. Nothing physical or energetic ever disappears. Secondly, from the perspective of life as a cycle of recycling, I realize that the cricket could not jump with one leg, and was ready to die. Now, inside the frog, the spirit of the cricket is reborn and can jump again. The Sioux tell the story of jumping mouse that further illustrates how everything happens for spiritual growth. 24 Healing Springs I December ‘17—January ‘18

Frog medicine is a spiritual jump. The cricket and frog reminded me that I am not the special ego in charge, and that something greater has everything in perfect balance. (continued)

Guilt is just an ego trap that backfires on us. I once spent a night in a friend’s apartment in Mexico. In the morning, her servant offered to cook my breakfast. I felt guilty about making her cook

and clean for me, so I declined and made my own breakfast. The poor woman felt horribly insulted. Instead of feeling guilty, I should have been gracious and grateful for her service. Gratitude is the most important attitude for each of us to express for every animal that offers itself for food and service. Rather than suffering on their behalf, we must appreciate the sacrifice and give thanks. Whether an animal is eaten in the wild, slaughtered by humans, or in some form of cruel existence, they are all on their own spiritual paths just as we are. We think we know best, but our mouse way of seeing inhibits our ability to judge. This lesson also comes from a story I heard about Sai Baba, the Indian spiritual master. Sai Baba was once walking through a crowd, healing as he went. One of his disciples asked him, “Master, why do you sometimes pass over children and heal the old people?” Sai Baba responded, “Can you see their karma?” We may not understand the purpose of suffering in the world, and our opinions may be misguided. When discerning wisdom tells us to act and help, we must. However, when no path of action presents itself, we can always pray. Pray that all beings receive the healing they want; ask for their karma to be forgiven, and remember that every creature is on a spiritual path requiring self-sacrifice. The purpose of life is spiritual growth, and we accomplish that by helping others, and also by allowing them to help us too.

Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique PAST LIFE REGRESSION SESSIONS

Unlock the past to thrive in the present QHHT is a spectacular journey into your higher consciousness. Pioneered by Delores Cannon, this hypnotic method facilitates a trance state through visualization accessing your higher self, where you will discover that all healing and answers lie within. Our higher self gives access to past lives and other memories releasing old timelines and blocks to more soul-infused living. People come for sessions for so many reasons. Some want to heal physical problems and others want to understand more about their soul mission. The soul has so much guidance that the conscious mind can’t access. The healing and transformation that occurs is spontaneous and life changing.

Nothing is beyond the realm of possibility. There are no limits except those of our own mind and beliefs. CONTACT DIANE SAUNDERS AT THESHIFT.ROCKS OR CALL TODAY FOR A SESSION 518.567.7315
