Doctors Urge FDA to Ban Multivitamins Containing Iron or Copper New Report Finds Common Supplements May Put Consumers at Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease

WASHINGTON—The Physicians Committee is urging the Food and Drug Administration to require vitamin manufacturers to reformulate common multivitamins that contain iron or copper, due to possible links with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease, which affects approximately 5 million Americans, is anticipated to triple over the next four decades. “Consumers need to avoid typical multivitamins until manufacturers change the way they are formulated,” says Neal Barnard, M.D., president of the Physicians Committee. “Otherwise, they may be at risk for a series of common brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.” The Physician Committee’s new report, Metals of Concern in Common Multivitamins, finds common multivitamins, including One a Day Women’s 50+ Healthy Advantage and One a Day Women’s Active Metabolism, contain up to twice the amount of copper a person should consume in an entire day. In studies, ingestion of copper and iron in even slightly elevated quantities increased risk of cognitive problems. “Because most people already obtain these metals from everyday foods, the added amounts in multivitamins increase the risk for overdose,” Dr. Barnard writes in a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, M.D. “Given that nearly half of Americans develop Alzheimer’s disease by age 85, we need to urge consumers to err on the side of caution.” Dr. Barnard requests the FDA work with vitamin manufactures to remove metals from the formulations. “Research on the links between 2 CELEBRATING

metals and brain damage is ongoing. Even so, the evidence that excess iron and copper contribute to brain deterioration has reached the point where we have to take it seriously,” says Dr. Barnard.

Instead of taking multivitamins, the doctors recommend that consumers choose only the vitamin supplements they need, such as vitamin B12 and vitamin D, sidestepping multiple vitamins.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that all persons over age 50 take a B12 supplement. Vitamin D normally comes from sun exposure, so people who receive less than 15 minutes of direct sunlight each day should take supplemental vitamin D. Other supplements have uses in specific conditions, such as folic acid and other prenatal vitamins for women of childbearing age. Routine supplementation of metals such as iron and copper is not justified and is potentially hazardous, according to the physicians group’s report. Some manufacturers sell multiple vitamins without added minerals. For recommendations about vitamin supplements and a list of metal-free vitamin products, visit PCRM.org/ Multivitamins. ometimes in life, one of our missions becomes clear due to revelation. Other times, we go through life supporting other people’s missions and only later does it become clear what we’re here to do.

their hands. I couldn’t believe I was walking… and I never stopped.”

In the case of Jodette, internationally known for her belly dancing, she never knew that shimmying before Middle Eastern kings and royalty would eventually lead her to make feeding the homeless in Sacramento her big mission in life. She’s been doing this since 1969.

“At that time, homeless people really weren’t on the street. It was in the late ‘60s and my husband owned a clothes shop for hippies. That’s when I realized – oh, my God, they are hungry!”

Life Shimmies for Jodette Unexpectedly In 1967, Jodette was happily supporting her husband here in Sacramento in his work. Then in a car accident where her vehicle rolled several times and she was thrown from the car, landing in a pool of gasoline, police and rescue staff didn’t think anyone could live through the trauma. Rushed to the hospital, she had multiple broken bones, was in a coma for eight days and was told she would never walk again. Jodette later learned that her family had agreed to pull the plug on her life support at the hospital. A few months later, she was sitting in a wheelchair and began praying. “God, if you let me walk again, I will feed the hungry.”

Friend Gets Inkling to Help Jodette – and Sacramento Benefits Some months went by and a friend of hers was moved one day to take her to a small church in Oak Park. During the service, the preacher prayed for her and commanded she walk. “I took my first step, then another and another and everyone got up and praised the Lord and clapped

She began teaching neighbors how to belly dance for free, happy that she could even move. But now she had to fulfill her vow to God.

And that revelation was an initiation to her feeding the homeless.

Rewards for the Soul “I never stopped feeding the homeless throughout the years. I’m afraid to. I made that vow. And I wonder if there are others out there who could possibly be wondering what their mission is in life. It may not be feeding the hungry, but the deep feeling that people feel when they do something like this is satisfying to the soul,” Jodette said. It’s not only the sense of deep satisfaction that people who help her feel. Those who have helped Jodette in the past frequently reported they are blessed, also. It’s as if God is smiling on anyone who helps her help His people. And each act of kindness makes a ripple effect in the community.

Homeless Numbers in Sacramento Rising If the homeless population was ‘stable’, one would expect that Jodette who sees them daily would be able to see the same people day in and day out. However, this isn’t the case. She finds new faces all the time, and according to Jodette, there are more families on the

street than ever. Every night there are more than 300 people sleeping on the sidewalk near Loaves and Fishes. Jodette is grateful to the local organizations that help her in her efforts, with special thanks to Eric Kintgen at the Food Bank, but wants to do more.

Can You Help – and Receive Your Own Blessings? As a way to raise funds, she has organized an upcoming 34th Annual Feed the Hungry Benefit at the Kebab Corner Restaurant on Sunday, Sept. 29th from 5 p.m. on. For a low fee of $20, you can eat all you want

How to Make Your Feet Sing By Dr. Donna, Editor

I

f you’re a diabetic, you know how important it is to pay attention to your feet daily. But for the rest of us, we may tend to ignore our feet until our feet are throbbing at the end of the day. Even then, some of us may simply go to bed, thinking our feet will feel better in the morning. We tune out the foot swelling, foot pain, burning, and how bad our feet feel. Most of the time they will feel better in the morning, but what if you could pay a tad more attention to your feet and figuratively, make them sing in happiness? We searched for foot care products that had the potential to rejuvenate and stimulate feet, and even prepare us for a night of dancing after a full day of standing, and requested to try them to see if they were worthy of our recommendation. Our choice was the Fair Trade’s Foot Care line.

4 CELEBRATING

Step 1 for Foot Detox and Rejuvenation Once you set foot in your home after work ready to collapse, tell yourself, “No! I’m going to feel better in 20 minutes flat.” Then remove your shoes and socks and apply a thick coating of the Volcano Foot Mask to them. Made of kaolin, pumice, limeflower, cleavers, fresh tomato, fresh papaya, potatoes and glycerine, the ingredients will start quenching free radicals and absorbing foot odor. The menthol has a cooling effect, which is especially needed when your feet are inflamed after being crammed in tight shoes all day long. The lemon oil, cinnamon oil, eugenol, limonene, and linalool are the refreshing components. Wrap your masked feet in plastic bags for only 10 minutes, then rub the mask into any areas where you tend to build up dead

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

skin cells. The pumice in the formula will help remove them; then leave on for a few minutes. Next wash the mask off your feet and dry them. Kaolin is known for its ability to detoxify the body. When you use kaolin on the skin, you can expect the feeling of fresher-feeling skin that appears more radiant. Why wouldn’t it work similarly on the feet?

Step 2 for Foot Detox and Rejuvenation Follow the Foot Mask with the Fair Trade Foot Lotion , an even more refreshing combination of peppermint oil, spearmint oil, arnica infusion, almond oil, Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter, glycerin, stearic acid, limonene, and linalool. Smooth on a fair amount, relaxing while it soaks into your feet. At this point, you could snuggle up under the covers because you’re so relaxed, but dancing is a real possibility

since your feet promptly forgot how bad they felt when you first arrived home. Now here’s the challenge: How good could your feet feel if you repeated these two simple steps every day for a week? If you did this Foot Detox followed by the foot lotion with the stimulating plant oils as soon as you got home from work for one week, would it be capable of changing your life? You’ll have to let us know… Fair Trade Volcano Foot Mask and Foot Lotion are products created by Lush Manufacturing Company in Canada, and the products are sent worldwide. Known for their contracts with small-scale farmers, environmental awareness, and the desire for people these days to use more natural products, Lush loves to surprise you with their creative and innovative products for hygiene and the bath. Getting Tested for Celiac, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Senstivity or Gluten Allergy: A Brief Analysis By Melanie Weir

G

luten free as a trend is helpful for increasing availability of foods to individuals on a once extremely restrictive diet, but getting diagnosed with celiac, gluten intolerance or gluten allergies is becoming increasing difficult in 2013. (1) Medical practitioners are viewing “Gluten Free’ as a new ‘Low Carb’ trend. (2) Specialists are telling patients to go gluten free (just try it out) before getting tested for celiac.

Six years later, I learned that Celiac Disease runs in my family. I also learned that I was not properly tested for Celiac and that as of yet, the only way I can currently get tested is if I consume at least one slice of bread and one cookie everyday for at least 6 months. A test can be run at 3 months, but generally it takes 6 months for accuracy.

(3) With 310 symptoms associated with Celiac Disease, patients with non-classic symptoms are often not tested: distended belly, diarrhea or constipation.

Before You Are Tested for Celiac:

(4) People are getting false information regarding how to be tested for Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity and Gluten Allergies.

• Choose a competent lab to process your tests.

• Do not change your diet, continue eating gluten. o Familiarity with reading celiac tests accurately is a must.

(5) Many practitioners do not understand the differences between Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity and Gluten Allergies.

• Know which tests you need to have.

(6) People are often told that they do not need a gluten-free diet due to an IGA test coming up negative, but this is not always true.

• Understand that some tests are not accurate if you have auto-immune disease or if you are under 7 years of age.

Back in 2001, I learned that there was a disease called Celiac Disease at a time when I had a lot of the symptoms. In 2002, a dietitian took me off gluten for 6 weeks and the results were miraculous. My skin stopped itching and I didn’t feel like I was exhausted. I didn’t feel like I was going 6 CELEBRATING

to be sick when I finished meals and the brain fog I was under for years was drifting away. I was then instructed by my GI doctor to eat gluten for 2 weeks and was then tested for IGA only antibodies and sent in for a biopsy.

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

o Insurance companies tend to discourage all tests from being run as a cost reduction technique.

• Know that the Celiac tests do not test for gluten allergy, gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. If celiac tests run negative, other tests can still be performed.

o Raised IgA antibodies indicate short-term immune response. o Raised IgG antibodies demonstrate long-term immune response. o Negative antibody tests for both IgA and IgG can be interpreted negative only if individual has consumed gluten regularly for 3-6 months. • Alternative Test Result & Diagnosis o It’s important to note not all Celiacs will have positive antibody results.

Stage 1 of Celiac Diagnosis: • A Genetic Test must be run for the HLA fingerprint for both Celiac Genes – HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. • A Celiac Antibody Assay Panel must be run, which should include all of the following: tTG – both IgA & IgG, EmA, ARA, AGA – IgG & IgA. • Most clinics run a total Serum IgA, which should include: oA nti-gliadin ELISA, IgA specfic (AGA-IgA) and Anti-gliadin ELISA

• IgA deficiency exists in 1 out of 500 to 700 healthy blood donors. o The serological test can be a ‘false negative’ and if this is suspected, an alternative serologic test can be conducted. o Four out of 5 Celiac diagnoses can also be done from a positive villi biopsy, genetic test, symptoms associated with a gluten-free diet and symptoms that go away with implementation of strict gluten-free diet.

oA nti-human tissue transglutaminase (Hu-tTG) ELISA, IgA Recombinant antigen oA nti-endomysial (EMA) antibody by Immunofluorescence Assay

o If the villi biopsy and serological test are negative, it could mean the individual does not have active celiac disease. If the genetic test is positive, the individual should continue serological testing into the future.

The next stage of testing involves these three tests: Allergies (IgG & IgE) – an immunologist can give you more information. Symptoms can be from gluten or potentially other food proteins. Gluten Intolerance – An antibody test can be run: IgA antibody (AGA), anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody (ATTA), and anti-endomysial antibody (EMA). Positive results + reduction or elimination of gluten related symptoms = need for adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. Gluten Sensitivity – Diagnosed using a gluten elimination test. This is the black box of gluten reactions. If you eat gluten and it makes you sick, don’t eat it. If you can handle a little gluten, then only eat a little bit of it. This diagnosis can only be given if the celiac, gluten intolerance and allergy tests have negative results after consuming gluten for 3-6 months (1 slice of bread and a cookie – 3 to 6 months depending on which resource you observe). Book Resources: Kids with Celiac Disease by Danna Korn (2001) Recognizing Celiac Disease – Libonati & Capuzzi (2007)

• Endoscopy – biopsy of villi (Make sure your surgeon has experience taking celiac biopsy – it generally takes 12-18 months of training for accuracy.)

Stage 2 of Celiac Diagnosis: • You must have one of the HLA fingerprint genes to have Celiac Disease. However, as of early 2000, ‘2530% of people who do have the gene, don’t have Celiac Disease’*. • Positive Antibody Results:

Ashiatsu Massage is A Massage Like You’ve Never Experienced By Jessica Moore

What is it?

Is it safe?

Ashiatsu is an updated, Western version of an ancient form of bodywork: massage using the feet. When broken down, the word “ashi” means foot and “atsu” means pressure. However, ashiatsu practitioners may also utilize their knees, elbows, palms, and fingers. This modality has a long and interesting history, but a relatively new and growing following here in the United States. It may also be referred to as barefoot massage or gravity assisted massage. Ashiatsu is a modern take on an ancient practice.

Therapists require special training to perform this modality. When done by a certified therapist, Ashiatsu is safe, effective and painless — not to mention profoundly relaxing. The amount of pressure used is carefully monitored throughout the session, and easily adjusted for the client’s comfort. Special care is taken around the spine and joints. Your safety, relaxation, and well-being is of utmost concern.

How does it work? Ashiatsu massages are done on the massage table. While holding on to sturdy overhead bars for balance, the therapist stands above you on the massage table and uses feet to deliver the massage. The advantage of Ashiatsu is that it allows gravity to do the work, leveraging the therapist’s body weight to deliver the deepest massage available today.

This is the massage that can provide pain-free, bruise-free pressure on the deeper layers of muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues without causing wincing, clenching or holding of breath from pokey elbows, knuckles or thumbs; highly recommended for those who are looking for really deep work but can’t seem to find a therapist who can go deep enough for them! Give it a try! You might just like it! For more information about Ashiatsu Massage contact Jessica at: (916) 532-1107

What does it feel like?

Is it for everyone? People of every age and size can benefit from Ashiatsu. Famous for back pain relief and deep relaxation, Ashiatsu is particularly popular among athletes and those whose jobs involve physical labor. Ashiatsu barefoot massage is an effective bodywork treatment for treating and preventing all types of athletic injuries. Most clients report significant decreases pain with amazing increases in range of motion and athletic performance. Clients with sports or repetitive strain injuries receiving this type of massage often find they are even more flexible after the sessions than before they were injured. Ashiatsu is not recommended for use with conditions such as pregnancy or osteoporosis.

Ashiatsu includes the combination of Swedish, myofascial, and compression massage strokes. It includes long gliding strokes associated with Western or Swedish massage, and aspects of the ancient Eastern techniques and philosophies of Shiatsu and Ayurveda. Thai techniques, stretches, and compression may also be used. Though gentle, the Ashiatsu massage offers a depth unmatched by any other massage technique: “Hurts so Good” NOT “No Pain No Gain.”

Natural soap maker Shelly Albrecht of Sandhills Goat Products has been making handmade soaps for the past 5 years. “We had so much goat milk at the end of the work day on our farm that I wanted to put it to good use. I started making soaps with goat milk from the start. I knew that milk is good for the body, both inside and out, and my intuition was correct,” she said. Soon an elderly woman who purchased her soap started raving about how the goat milk soap alleviated the cracks on the back of her hands. Then a man with eczema used her soap and reported that the red marks are less noticeable by the next day.

hen you want to have or keep healthy skin, it makes sense to give serious consideration to what you’re using to clean your skin. Daily sudsing of the skin adds up over a lifetime, and soap you are using may be causing irritation to your skin. The irritation is an open door for infections or the development of skin lesions. What you put on your skin matters because your skin is like a sponge. Although it keeps a lot of things out of your body, it also allows some things to penetrate. The old-fashioned process of soap making is a long process. It involves melting the fat and oil ingredients and possibly heating caustic lye, adding skin healing ingredients such as essential oils or plants, pouring the soap into molds,

The FDA prevents anyone to make claims that their soap can heal any disorder and would consider soaps for skin disorders an ‘unproven’ remedy that has no safety record studies or efficaciousness studies behind them. Obviously, few people or companies would fund a project like this, and really, does EVERYTHING have to have the stamp of the FDA on it?

see rapid improvement in their condition. Of course, this doesn’t imply that everyone will get a benefit but it does give you a clue that there could be benefits for you. “I focus on using totally natural ingredients and healing ingredients. For example, my honey and almonds soap has very little scent but it’s exfoliating. Petals of roses give a soap an air of romance… One time I added citronella to my soap. A woman went to Africa and took three bars with her. She claimed she only had two mosquito bites the whole time – and they were on her head. The soap doesn’t work well on hair,” Shelly told us.

Shelly loves developing new soap scents and you can find her line on www.grownebraska.com (Sandhills Goat Products), which includes soaps such as Apple Jack and Peel, Lilac, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood (great for guys), Black Raspberry Vanilla, Sweet Pea, Gardenia, and Plumera. cooling it and curing it for up to 60 days. However, soap bar companies are said to use chemical ingredients instead of natural ones; ingredients such as detergents, some which are thought to be endocrine disruptors.

You may consider having some bars of Shelly’s Citronella soap around the house, handy for that spontaneous walk in the woods or mountain where ticks and mosquitoes abound.

What each of us can do is get a good idea whether or not there are any potential benefits by talking with those who used natural soaps. We can ourselves evaluate how these soaps could be working and give them a trial. Soapmakers who use milk of any type in them are reporting similar testimonials from their clients. Cow’s milk, goat’s milk, sheep soap, buffalo milk, and camel milk has been added to soaps that have resulted in softer, healthier skin. Your scalp is directly exposed to sulfates and other chemicals found in shampoo, conditioners and hair products. It’s exposed to the atmosphere and collects particulate matter found in the air. Attached to the hair follicle is the sebum gland, which in a healthy scalp lubricates the hair, making hair shine. When oil is combined with excess skin cells, these elements can create aa plaque-like barrier can form on the scalp which cannot be removed by shampoos. “It is possible to create an optimal environment by therapeutically cleansing the scalp,” said Karen Crever, licensed cosmetologist for the past 32 years and instructor at Marinello School of Beauty, a local beauty college. “For the past six years, I’ve demonstrated that skin care is necessary for the scalp. When the scalp is clean, the pores and follicles can breathe again. Healthy scalps grow healthy hair.” According to Karen, using all organic and natural products on the hair may not be good enough. “You could have an abundance of topical build up,

or plaque, and not know it because you can’t see what’s happening on the surface.” As she consults with clients, Karen uses a handheld digital camera-scope to magnify the scalp by 400 times. They watch along on the laptop screen. “In a healthy scalp, you’ll see capillaries and veins. But in most scalps, sebum and dead skin cells accumulate and can block the follicle opening, which can inhibit hair growth. This is one of the causes of itch, tenderness and hair loss.” In some people, a fungal or parasitic condition could be seen. This is often the result of a Candida condition within the body that can affect the status of one’s immune system and the body’s ability to ward off invasive organisms. However, it’s not until a series of ‘scalp facials’ are performed that she can determine the health of the hair follicle. Karen uses an exfoliating agent and manually exfoliates the scalp, removing excess skin cells and sebum on The process truly does make your scalp feel more open and able to ‘breathe’. Amazingly, I found it easier to think and felt no need to wash my hair for another two full days. “ Cleansing the scalp or better put, ‘giving your scalp a facial’ is the first step in keeping this part of the body healthy,” she said. Her clients are local, national and even fly in from other countries for her unique service. For those who cannot, she offers clients her Scalp Systems Kit, which includes the following:

1. Does your scalp feel tight or itch? Y / N

• 2 oz exfoliate, enough for 12 treatments

2. Do you have dandruff like conditions? Y / N

• 1 oz oil

3. Do you have an oily scalp? Y / N

• 4 oz shampoo

4. Does your scalp smell a few hours after shampooing? Y / N

• 1 tail comb

5. Does your scalp feel as if it can breathe? Y / N If you answered Yes to questions 1 through 4, and No to question 5, you would benefit from a scalp cleansing.

• 4 oz conditioner • 1 styling comb • 1 scalp brush • 1 nylon glove • Instructions on how to use them You also have the option of purchasing the handheld camera microscope that connects to the computer via a USB port providing before and after pictures for documentation. “Anyone can create optimal scalp health by doing these things, but it also takes a proper diet and good health habits for best results,” she said. 4 Steps to a Happier You

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. ~Dalai Lama What is happiness? Does anyone really know? According to Webster’s Dictionary, “it is feelings of joy and pleasure mingled in varying degree.” As I began my rumination on what makes me happy I also gave consideration to what makes me unhappy. And, when I got really honest with myself, I realized it is when I get too focused on what I don’t have, or too narrowly focused on myself.

HEALTH

By Louise Vidaurri, Interfaith Minister, Radical Forgiveness Coach, Chakra Intuitive & Energy Transformer

These are 4 simple habits to develop. They don’t cost anything, but can have great value in shifting you to happiness. How do you form these habits? One at a time, starting as small as possible, and pretty soon you will notice you are creating the life you desire. Set these habits in motion. You will notice yourself becoming more present, more grateful, more other focused. It will be nothing short of a miracle.

Have you ever noticed when you start focusing on one thing that makes you unhappy, all of sudden you are focusing on more things that make you unhappy and pretty soon, you are having one big POOR ME EVENT! I just received my Energy Magazine and came across an article written by Leo Babauta. In his article, Babauta espouses that creating good habits can create happiness, and if you incorporate the habits into your life you’ll be happier regularly. So what habits make you happy? Here are his recommendations – simple, yes, and they do work. 1. To shift your focus, list 3 good things about your day, every day. 2. Help someone. It helps to get your attention off of yourself and on to helping others. All of sudden you may realize you don’t have it so bad. 3. Meditate. Meditate for just 2 minutes a day and you will create a habit that will allow you to notice your thoughts throughout the rest of the day. Personally, I meditate 30 minutes a day, everyday, and I have noticed a dramatic change in my view of the world and of myself. It helps to shift everything into the present. Unhappiness comes from not being present. Meditation will help you to notice the source of anxiety and distraction. 4. E xercise. Just a few minutes of light walking a day can shift your focus, relieve tension and help you to breathe more deeply. Deep breathing always helps to relieve tension and relaxes the mind and body.

Book Review: Hair Loss in Women. Getting to the Root of the Problem Reviewed By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret.), Editor By Melanie Vonzabuesnig ©2013 Vonzabuesnig, third edition 169 pages

Available at www.vzbotanicals.com/Books%20info.html or at www.vzbotanicals.com/overcomefemalehairloss.html

Hair Loss is Something That Will Likely Affect You

• Cicatricial alopecia – This type of hair loss is permanent and results in scarring.

Seventy-five percent of all women will experience some degree of hair loss at some time during her lifetime. If you’re one of them, you’ll notice it but others won’t until you lose 45% of your hair. Unfortunately, hair loss may be accompanied by depression, shame, and frustration. If you’re experiencing hair loss, you’ll soon discover that other than minoxidil, there will be little help from the medical profession.

• A nagen effluvium – Results from chemotherapy and radiation.

Author Melanie Vonzabuesnig started experiencing patchy hair loss at the age of 5 that came and went, and then after a pregnancy, had almost total hair loss. These painful experiences led her to research the causes of hair loss and not give up until she found an answer.

It’s the Bible on Hair Loss Her book, Hair Loss in Women. Getting to the Root of the Problem, outlines the major types of hair loss that can occur:

There are over 50 different causes of hair loss, all explained in this book. Melanie does a great job explaining the growth cycle of the hair and how each one of these conditions creates the hair loss. She also mentions what to do about them. For example, you may know that medications could be a cause of hair loss but did you know that birth control pills are a culprit? Find out why in the book.

Health & Fitness Magazine rating: 10/10

Don’t Do Without This Book if You Suffer from The Problem

• Alopecia areata – An autoimmune disorder that can progress to total scalp and body hair loss. • Telogen effluvium – This one may occur after a stress such as a high fever, infection, surgery, or extreme stress as well as mold exposure, low iron and gluten intolerance.

You’ll learn a lot about the topic and be able to speak to medical personnel intelligently after studying this book. However, don’t worry – it’s not written in a textbook type style. It’s quite

Another example is why women lose their hair after giving birth and when the hair loss occurs like clockwork. Other examples are vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Which ones are related to hair loss and which ones can you take too much and end up with hair loss as well?

If you’re experiencing severe hair loss, obviously the first step is to have a complete health work up to rule out major diseases of the thyroid, adrenals, kidneys, liver, and thymus. However, if nothing shows up after that, or if your condition stumps your physician, where will you turn? This book is highly recommended because it will help you decide where to look next to discover what’s causing your hair loss.

• Androgenetic alopecia, called female baldness. This one may be due to high levels of dihydrotestosterone and lower levels of estrogens.

Goat Milk Soap Was Her Answer for Psoriasis By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret.), Editor

“It was 2005 when I noticed I had psoriasis. I wasn’t on medications but I had to bandage my hands daily to keep myself from scratching,” she said. During those years, Christine had been using commercial soaps which soap-making books report are not really soaps; they’re detergents. However, even when she used handmade soaps she purchased from crafters and small businesses, the essential oils in them didn’t always agree with her. That’s when she decided to make her own soap. She knew that any type of milk was always soothing to the skin and because her Floppy Ear Goat Farm already was producing gallons of goat milk daily, Christine decided to make her own goat milk soap.

Even though she wasn’t looking for a business opportunity – the goats were more than a handful, her soap-making skills became wordof-mouth and people began trying her soaps for their skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and cracked, rough skin of those in the construction industry who couldn’t find relief elsewhere. “I have one customer who had skin problems from construction for years and he called to say he was better in one week,” she said. Christine believes that natural ingredients in the soap such as the goat milk, high quality essential oils, and other oils are probably responsible for the healing effects. “It’s probably the process, too, since I never heat any of the ingredients to temperatures greater than 90 degrees Fahrenheit… and the curing process we use lasts a whole month,” she told us. Their basic soap ingredients include goat milk, soybean oil, olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, canola oil and grapeseed oil.

SKIN ISSUES

S

ince she was a teenager, Christine Kocourek was troubled with psoriasis. In fact, her whole family suffered through the scaley sores that seemed to have no rhyme or reason.

Over the last 9 years, that one 4 oz. bar of soap grew to 22 bars in a batch and then 4000 bars they make annually and sell nationwide. Her big sellers include lavender soaps (such as with patchouli or essential oils), cedar with saffron, Lily-of-thevalley, and Raspberry Vanilla soaps but they also offer: • Comfrey Lavender • Peppermint Poppyseed • Tea Tree Oil Soap • Carrots ‘n Honey • Rosemary Mint • Honey ‘n Oats • Almond soap. She even makes a Dog Bar which contains four oils known to repel ticks and fleas: lavender, cedarwood, citronella and tea tree. One bar lasts about three to four weeks and it’s shaped in a solid rectangular shape to facilitate a longer life. She also makes a liquid goat milk soap in a pump-style bottle. “Since I started using the goat milk soap, it cleared up my skin. I saw some friends recently I hadn’t seen for over 15 years and they commented on my skin and how it was wrinkle-free,” she said. Christine uses the soap to remove make-up as well. “One thing I want people to know,” Christine confided, “is that if you use goat milk soap, you don’t have to worry – you won’t smell like an old buck!” Find out more at www.FloppyEarFarm.com

Testimonials: “Using a soap w/out all those chemicals always makes my skin feel 10x better and cleaner.” Courtney, from Sheboygan, WI “My dry, patchy skin has cleared up w/ your soap. I no longer dread the upcoming winter months :-) I used to get big angry patches of skin but consistent use of your soap has eliminated them.” Tina, from Sheboygan, WI “I use the soap on myself and my cat (who has sensitive skin). Both of us benefit from using the soap with balanced pH and softer / more moisturized skin/pelt.” Cindy, from Sheboygan, WI “It’s all natural and doesn’t irritate my family’s skin like store bought soap. My sister’s skin cleared up within a week while using this soap.” Marissa, from Sheboygan Falls, WI

FITNESS

5 Ways to Turn Fat to Fit

By “Mad Dog Megan” (Megan White), Fitness Trainer

C

hances are that if you’re reading this article, you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Day-in and day-out I see clients kill themselves in my gym and in the kitchen just to foil their fitness goals with one of these five habits: Sleep — Studies repeatedly show that not enough sleep leads to stubborn fat gain, and prevents muscle recovery/growth. Truth of the matter is, the majority of the results don’t come from your workout. It’s the aftermath. While your body is in a deep sleep, it repairs the muscle tear from the day and rebuilds stronger, leaner muscle. Choose your bed time...What time do you need to be in bed to get 7-8 hours of sleep? Try setting a sleep timer for 1 week- reminding you to go to bed 30 minutes before your bedtime.

Hydration — Your insides are like an intricate pipeline, carrying nutrients through your body on water. Being dehydrated slows the nutrients from getting to where they need to be, and prevents your body from doing its normal tasks. Just like a lake or pool needs to keep a certain ph, your body needs electrolytes and minerals to maintain the flow. Not drinking enough water and electrolytes can stop the production of lean muscle and the burning of the jiggle. Active adults should drink 100oz of water each day. Coconut water and bananas are great sources of electrolytes. Booze — Alcohol is literally toxic for your body. Imagine code red in jail - everything stops. Fat loss, muscle building, and recovery all halt, so your body concentrates on getting the poisons out of your system by turning them into fat and

running them through your liver. It literally corrodes your insides as it freely flows through your pipeline. Imagine being hooked up to an IV and running a corrosive substance through your veins. Dramatic? Not Really. Alcohol — Yes, I’m aware this is a repeat. Drinking regularly is that detrimental to achieving your health and fitness goals. If you must drink, stick with light beers or wine (4oz per glass!) and drinks that don’t have sugary mixers. Stay extra hydrated before and after a night out. Also try to drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. The Best of the Worst Fit-garita: 1oz Tequila + 3oz Fresh Lime Juice + 3oz Soda Water Over Ice Lemon/Lime Chiller: 1oz Vodka + 2oz Fresh Lime Juice + 2oz Fresh Lemon Juice + 2oz Soda Water over mint or cucumber and Ice. Irregular Eating — Your body is in constant motion adapting to your regular lifestyle. You can only absorb so many nutrients at a time. When your body doesn’t have an adequate amount of nutrients it can start to breakdown lean muscle and slow the burning of unhealthy fat. Eating every 3-4 hours and keeping healthy whole food snacks on hand can keep your belly fat at bay. Try keeping LaraBars, Nuts, Fruit, or Homemade Trail Mix on hand in the car, desk, and purse/pack. Your body will be a reflection of your lifestyle. Work on maintaining these habits along with keeping a regular work-out schedule and balanced diet and you’ll be at maintenance before you know it. Having trouble mastering these habits? Come check out my fitness community Train Hard Or Go Home. Mention Health and Fitness for a free work-out.

Are smoothies better for you than juicing? To sort out the logic involved in this statement, you’ll have to know a little physiology about digestion.

How Your Body Digests Food Your digestive system breaks down food via enzymes produced in your mouth and digestive tract. Once the food gets to the stomach, hydrochloric acid acts upon it to breaks it down further. As the food heads on down the digestive tract, additional enzymes break it down further and bile is added to it as well.

Why Juicing Is Better Than Smoothies For Health By Dr. Donna, Editor

Digestion separates food components into vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, fat and bulk (fiber). These individual components then may be absorbed into the bloodstream; however, fiber tends to stay within the intestinal tract. Here it is able to give the digested food matter enough bulk to continue traveling to the rectum.

What Happens When You Consume a Smoothie When you make a smoothie, you essentially are taking all the food ingredients and starting the food breakdown process. The blender pulverizes the foods into a drink that is really pureed food. When you drink the smoothie, the drink passes to the stomach and because some breakdown of the foods has already occurred, it is sent on its way to the rest of the GI tract. Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream and the fiber is separated out from the bulk and continues to assist the colon with absorbing chemicals, pesticides, and propelling the contents of the digestive tract to the rectum. Your body ends up getting all the nutrients found in the smoothie ingredients. Generally, smoothie ingredients include a cup of milk or yogurt, one to three fruits, one to two servings of vegetables, and nuts or seeds. Sometimes additional ingredients may be added such as aloe vera juice, chlorophyll, lecithin, wheat germ oil, flavorings such as honey or agave, coconut or coconut oil, and nutritional yeast. Smoothies may be nutrient-dense packed drinks that usually cannot be consumed in a few minutes. The limiting factor is the fiber. You have to wait for your intestinal tract to process the fiber.

16 CELEBRATING

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

What Happens When You Consume Juice When you juice fruits and vegetables, the fiber is separated from the produce by the juicer. The juicer acts as if it were your body – extracting out the vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients from the produce without the limitation of the fiber. Because of this, you can consume more juice in a specified period of time. Your body doesn’t have to process the fiber. The more juice you consume, the more vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients from the fruits and vegetables you get. Let’s compare one pound of carrots juiced, which is equal to one cup of juice, to one pound of carrots pureed. If you put one pound of carrots in a smoothie, you’d most likely give up drinking the smoothie before you’d consume all of it. There’s too much fiber and your body sends you the message that it has had enough. Yet, you could handle perhaps a cup of carrots in the smoothie.

The Nutrients Consumed are the Bottom Line Comparing the nutrients of a cup of carrots to a pound of carrots, it’s a no-brainer to realize there are a lot more nutrients in the pound of carrots. And these days, the bottom line is how many nutrients are you getting into your body. Government studies have proven that fruits and vegetables have significantly fewer nutrients in them now than they had in the 1970s. One peach in the 1970s had the equivalent amount of nutrients as over 30 peaches from today’s crops, according to one researcher’s findings. As a dietitian early in my career, I was responsible for the nutritional care of hundreds of residents in nursing home and residential facilities. Every home had a proportion of patients who needed a pureed diet, which is essentially a smoothie at every meal. Yet, these patients never experienced benefits beyond what was offered in the diet. (By the way, they did not receive a processed diet when I was in charge.) Comparing these benefits to those patients over the years who used juicing as a way to therapeutically improve their health, it’s always true that those who juice who get the best results. Saving the body the step of dealing with the fiber allows more nutrients to go into the body and offers vastly more healing potential. What’s the best juicer on the market today? Try an Angel Juicer. The nutrients extracted from fruits and veggies with this juicer far exceed the others.

RELATIONSHIPS

Mitch! My wife, dude, she comes in the door hot & PO’d almost every day after work now. Her work commute topped off a day of one person after the other acting like the world owes them a favor! Seriously, what is going on? So is it true that we’re the Old School ones now at the age of 34? Everywhere, it’s people cutting you off, no one saying thank you, littering, talking loudly on cell phones in the gym locker room, people texting when you’re trying to talk to them.. Drivers texting & weaving into your lane...Honk so she doesn’t hit you and she gives you the finger?? What the ---! We really try to not think negatively, Mitch. We’re raising our kids best we can, and thank God for my in-laws because they’re awesome with the kids, pumping ‘em on manners and decency! Why are manners and decency out the window?!! Thanks, Head Spinning Cameron Park, California Hey Spinning, “Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength.” ― Eric Hoffer, The Passionate State of Mind: And Other Aphorisms Each and every moment of our lives is opportunity. Choice! I first might acknowledge the pain so many are in when they choose to be rude. Yes, for those of you who might say it’s not a choice, rudeness IS a choice. Unless your life is at stake, no one really gains from being rude! Meanwhile, I’m sorry you’re in such pain. The rest of us “expect courtesy”!! Kind of humorous, if you really think about it, huh? There truly are no “shoulds” in life, yet we believe in some minimum mores for civil engagement, don’t we? Where exactly do these expectations come from? Truth told, our documented human history features rape, pillage and plunder vs. stories of courtesy and civility. Yet between the lines of historical horrors lies a perceived thread of beliefs, mores and values that created (and can STILL create) connection and community! My Associate, Cija Black (at modernloveguide.com) notes, “I don’t think we will experience consistent polite communication in business (sic, And in Life) until we take the time to be present and see what is in front of us.” She notes technology’s theft of our sense of free time, taking us away from relationship with others. Meanwhile, while technology IS a challenge, I think our own actions, as Cija notes, powerfully support the contemporary phenomenon of relationship degradation. We’re in an age of grade schoolers having Relationship Coaches to teach them how to relate to live human beings. Meanwhile, I feel our litigenous, accountability and integrity-dodging cultural norms create a hostile environment. Not only do we not know nor will generally never see 99% of the people we encounter in urban areas a second time, but we’re aliented from them by these phenomenon! Fortunately, our culture is much more supportive of the rights of previously denigrated citizens. For example, nowadays, we generally treat handicapped persons more like the normal human beings they are. Yet fellow drivers, gym members, and shoppers scare us! The mass media ignores the dramatic drop in every crime category (annually for the past 30 years) to blast the latest tragedy worldwide as if every other neighbor is capable of horrific acts. What’s going on? We’re weakened. Feeling vulnerable. Confused by cultural dynamics, and believing we’re in danger. We accept multicultural, varied lifestyle and self-expression differences to the point of not knowing who we can trust, and who we feel we can relate to. My turn... To herald “Old School”! While freedom of speech and choice is awesome, accountability for one’s actions needs to accompany those freedoms! Thank God I have the right to say what I think and feel, but I should be held to task if my actions are truly offensive or otherwise detrimental to others’ lives. Parents must stop checking out. Our children desperately need kind and courteous role models. They need parents to provide disciplinary consequences to make positive treatment of others a priority. Don’t blame the media, the president, or anyone: They are YOUR children. All citizens need to treat our children as valuable, and model unconditional respect, kindness and courtesy. We won’t change the world via single acts, but we do plant seeds. What’s going on: A call for increased consciousness. I choose to be part of that solution. COVER STORY

Has Your Hair Kept Up With The Times? By Dr. Donna, Editor

T

imes have changed and so have salons. It’s old hat for hair salons to use toxic products on your hair. It’s old hat for hair stylists to be independent contractors that may or may not ever seek any extra education about colors, cutting techniques, and styles. It’s an antiquated phrase to say “a shampoo and set”; it’s a blow-out. It’s old hat for everyone working at the salon not to act like they’re a big family, supporting each other. And it’s old hat for a salon to not be plugged into conservation of resources.

Trend Setters Here in Sacramento What’s in is a hair salon that is so concerned with the health of their clients that they would never touch any product that could harm you (or them) in some way. At Willo, a collection of Aveda salon and spas located in Sacramento, Roseville and Gold River, that’s what you’ll find. Eco-entrepreneur and salon owner Marilyn Sadeq is the mastermind behind this new concept in hair salons and spas. “I found myself thinking ‘what can I do that will improve my client’s hair and health?’ And finally I realized I had to become a part of something bigger than myself that would help everyone. That’s when I discovered the benefits of becoming an Aveda salon,” she reported. “With their products, none of our stylists even wear gloves anymore to protect us from the chemicals. The products are so natural that we don’t have to worry about them, with pure flower and plant essences.”

If you need repair, their repair treatment improves damaged hair up to 84% with the power of quinoa protein and sugar beetderived amino acid, leaving strands strong, supple and healthy-looking. Aveda hair color gives you vibrant color that lasts, even on gray hair. Because it’s up to 99% naturally derived, it’s essentially damage free. The hair color is infused with sunflower, castor and jojoba oils, which improve the condition of your hair and add shine. “All those years I used other brands of hair color, I never realized what I was missing. This color is so healthy and so concentrated in color and makes hair healthier,” she said. The Aveda hair color also contains a natural antioxidant to help protect hair against fading. And it’s filled with pure flower and plant aroma with lavender to sooth, calm and relax you. Expect to improve the condition of your hair by 71% — and do it all naturally.

Thinning Hair Solutions That are Natural If your hair is thinning, there’s a natural way to bring it back in thicker than ever. Ask them about the Iwati Hair Thinning Treatment. This three-step system includes a shampoo designed for hair regrowth, a conditioner that keeps hair strong, and a scalp treatment to help bring back a receding hairline. It’s a fitness program for the hair. While you’re waiting for the hair to grow through the normal cycle to get to its desired length, you might try their hair extensions. “We use Balmaine hair extensions because they are the most damage-free hair extensions. They are simple and healthy and you can thicken your hair for a special evening like wedding events, reunions, and senior pictures, and then go without them the next day if you wish.”.

The Added Extras for Healthy Body, Mind and Hair Marilyn admits her Willo Salon & Spa is unlike any other hair salon or spa in the area. “We realized that when you come in for any beauty treatment, we get the opportunity to refill your bucket. And that’s what we will do. We have so much passion for doing this. We can inspire you, empower you, or even educate you. Together we can create something new,” she said. At Willo Salon & Spa, you won’t escape without getting a signature Aveda scalp massage, hand massage, or makeup idea. The stylists are constantly attending new seminars and conferences. “Knowledge is definitely power… When one stylist goes to a class, she can’t wait to come back and share what she learned with the other stylists. This is what makes us the

Willo family – and everyone that works here is like that. To you, it means you end up with the wisdom of the whole family, not only one person,” Marilyn confided. At Willo Salon & Spa, you have your choice of stylists called artists. All are licensed, but a new artist is someone who just started working at Willo Salon & Spa. A level 5 artist is a Master Artist who is sought after internationally for her expertise such as Marilyn herself. Within the artist framework, you can also choose someone closer to your age. The artists range from 20 to 60 years old.

The Rise of Single Living By Damon Paveglio

For some cultural observers, this is a disturbing trend. They feel it is indicative of a society whose social fabric is fraying. They despair at the decline of traditional institutions—the nuclear family, the Church, and other social organizations such as the Rotary Club. They claim that the weakening of these societal bonds—along with the potentially alienating effects of technology—is leading to an increase in isolation, depression and other psychiatric disorders. For them, the rapid increase of people living alone is just another symptom of the decline of traditional social institutions. People living alone—“solos,” as I will call them here—have long been looked on with suspicion. The stigma was that of the lonely old Cat Lady, or the slob wearing only boxers and a dirty T-shirt drinking milk straight from the carton. Or they were pitied: the poor old spinster who could never find a mate. (It wasn’t too long ago when school girls were actively being taught that a woman’s place was in the home.) Men living alone were assumed to be gay or anti-social or just unsuccessful

OPINION

I

n 1950, those who lived alone accounted for about 9 percent of all U.S. households. Today that figure is roughly 28 percent. In several large cities, including New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., it’s more than 40%. In some European cities it’s even higher than that. For the first time ever, less than half of all U.S. homes were husbandwife households. As sociologist Eric Klinenberg points out: “For the first time in human history, great numbers of people — at all ages, in all places, of every political persuasion — have begun settling down as singletons.”

in life in general. But these stereotypes are gradually diminishing. People are beginning to realize that living alone does not equate with loneliness. In fact, according to studies, solos are some of the most happy and social people you will meet. Living alone can make it easier to be social, because single people have more free time to engage in social activities. Compared with their married counterparts, single people are more likely to spend time with friends and neighbors, go to restaurants and attend art classes and lectures. Sociologist Erin Cornwell found that single people 35 and older were more likely than those who lived with a spouse or a romantic partner to spend a social evening with neighbors or friends. Many older people prefer living alone, as it allows them to maintain a sense of independence and integrity. Thanks to new communication technologies, solos are able to navigate through a world of people, information and ideas. More and more solos are moving to urban centers. That’s important, according to Devajyoti Deka of Rutgers University, because “when it comes to housing and travel preferences, solos tend to live more sustainable lifestyles. The more sustainable people move into cities, the more sustainable those cities are likely to become.” Solos are “more likely to live in apartments. They commute shorter distances. They spend less time commuting to work. They use public transit more often.” When it comes to housing, for instance, “roughly half of solos live in rented dwellings compared

to about a quarter of couples. While three-quarters of couples live in detached single-family homes that characterize suburban sprawl, that’s only true for about 45 percent of solo men and 48 percent of solo women.” The travel data shows more of the same. Solos “live about three miles closer to work than couples, on average, and are much more likely to commute by transit, with a roughly 6 to 7 percent transit share for solos versus about 3 percent for couples. Solos are less likely to travel anywhere by car, and while nearly all couple

households own at least one automobile, that’s only true for about 85 percent of solo households.” Living alone comports with modern values: it promotes freedom, personal control and self-realization — all prized aspects of contemporary life. Solos have more free time to indulge their personal interests and participate in social activities. Living alone is more conducive to sustainable living than is married life. It’s time for us to realize that “alone” is not synonymous with “lonely.”

ascinated by the medicinal effects found by those who use the marijuana plant for medical reasons, Jeff Hatley of Sequoia Analytical Labs in Sacramento used his background as a certified biomedical equipment technician and research and development to set up a testing facility for medical cannabis. “The labs of California started the ACCL for the reason of standardization to the business. In Sept of 2010 I found a collective waiting up to 3 weeks to receive the report back from far away labs in the Bay Area. By then, all the product could have sold,” he said. “I started Sequoia to shorten the time products were tested and report givin to the Collectives just here in Sacto.” “The problem is that there are many different strains of medical marijuana that can be used to treat patients with incurable conditions. If a strain is high in one of the medicinal constituents that wouldn’t be useful for a particular medical condition, the person using it will get minimal to no benefits,” he said. There are actually over 60 different cannabinoids found in the plant matter and in the trichomes of the plant. Here’s a small list of the most effective cannabinoids, which are analyzed for their percentages via a gas chromatograph and in his laboratory, and their therapeutic effects.

Here’s a quick guide to the major constituents (see opposite page). THC –The THC in the plant is known for the spaced out feeling that people feel from ingesting or smoking the plant. Other than antioxidant activity, it has a mild analgesic action but no other health benefits. THCV – This is tetrahydrocannabivarin. It’s also part of the reason why someone gets high from cannabis and increases as the plant ages. There are few health benefits from it. content of THC, thus don’t make a person high. In one case, an epileptic who received no benefits from medical prescription drugs ingested medical cannabis with a 10% CBC content and it controlled his epilepsy. There are three strains of Cannabis sativa known for their high CBD content. CBC – Evidence has suggested that CBC may play a role in the anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects of cannabis and may contribute to the overall analgesic effects of medical cannabis. However, the medical effects need to be verified. (Source needed) CBN – A metabolite of THC, itts effects are sedative. With the Federal government still considering the sale of marijuana illegal, and because laws changed in Sacramento county to prohibit the growing of cannabis outdoors, Hatley tests fruits and vegetables for E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria contamination in his laboratory. He also tests soil samples for bacteria, fungi, and protozoa content, nematode identification, mycorrhizal count, nutrient analysis, parasites, pathogens, and tests water quality, too. health. His lab was set up to test for potency, foreign matter, moisture content analysis, and microbial contamination. He also tests for pesticide content, another factor that can seriously cause harm to a medical cannabis patient. “Up to 25-30% of the samples I have tested here fail the beginning visual inspection for foreign matter because they contain spider mites or other bugs, bug feces, and bug eggs. Ingestion of mites is linked to lung damage as is bug feces. In someone who is fighting for their life due to cancer or other serious illness, ingesting these substances could make them sicker, and of course if a sample is infected with E.coli, Salmonella or Listeria, that could lead to a person’s death from the consumption,” he said. According to Hatley, failed plant samples can still be used for making oils. During the filtration of producing oils, the foreign matter is left behind. The concentrated oil can be used for various applications, which include making topicals or edibles. But failed material should never be ingested. “The collectives want to do their best to help the medical marijuana patients. They feel as if they are pioneers putting themselves out on a limb for changed legislation. And that’s very important. However, there’s more to the plant to be considered than just its potency; whether or not the person who buys it feels a difference or not. If they knew exactly what their plants were good for, then they would truly be helping out the patients. Otherwise, it’s guesswork – and really not worth the risks they take.” Sequoia Analytical Labs can be contacted for pricing on any of the available tests they perform at (916) 920-4009. Using HBOT to Treat Central Nervous System and Sensory Problems Submitted by NorCal Hyperbaric

E

very year, more than 150,000 Americans suffer severe head injuries. Strokes and head injuries deprive the brain of oxygen. Again, as in the case of stroke, the damage resembles an atomic bomb blast, with a central core of what is probably irreparable damage surrounded by a penumbra of lesser damage, as well as the reversibility of the damage within the penumbra, that dictates the patient’s prognosis. In many cases, this damage can be reversed by hyperbaric oxygen therapy. But head injury isn’t the only cause of brain damage. Every year, thousands of Americans suffer brain damage as the result of near-hanging, near drowning, near choking, cardiac arrest, cyanide and carbon monoxide poisonings as well as lightning strikes. In many cases people can recover from affects such as partial paralysis and speech loss. In addition, HBOT can assist in the alleviation of migraine headaches and in the treatment of various eye and ear problems. Brain damage often occurs after a head injury because the brain starts to swell. HBOT can break this cycle by constricting the brain’s blood vessels,

24 CELEBRATING

yet delivering more oxygen. This seems like a contradiction, but HBOT can increase oxygen levels because the increased pressure forces oxygen into the blood plasma, the liquid part of the blood that normally does not carry oxygen and into the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain.

HBOT also works well with physical therapy, since physical therapy gives a pattern, or sense of direction, to the stunned neurons newly awakened by HBOT. It also may reduce spasticity, or muscle rigidity, which is a major hurdle to rehabilitation and can aid quadriplegics and paraplegics by relieving bedsores.

As a result of the extra oxygen that HBOT provides, the dormant brain cells in the penumbra are awakened and begin to function again. Giving a patient pure oxygen at normal pressure simply cannot put enough oxygen into either the bloodstream or the cerebrospinal fluid to overcome the oxygen deficit. But HBOT can improve this oxygen deficiency. Often, this increased oxygenation helps to restore the patient to a conscious state. The use of HBOT can reduce the chances of permanent damage.

HBOT Can Help Migraine Headaches

After just one HBOT session, the function of a Texas boy’s brain who had suffered a serious head injury in a motor vehicle accident greatly improved. The patient then received twenty HBOT sessions at 1.5 atmospheres. There were daily increases in the boy’s attention span, alertness and ability to use language. His leg muscles became much less spastic, which improved the response to physical therapy and his memory improved too. Eventually, the boy was able to attend his high school graduation dance. HBOT shows striking results when a pressure of 1.5 atomspheres is used in onehour sessions.

HBOT Can Help Spinal Cord Problems A number of studies have shown HBOT’s effectiveness in cases where spinal damage is associated with injuries. In these studies, HBOT showed an ability to improve blood flow to the spinal cord, to reduce swelling and to correct disturbances in various bodily chemicals. In an animal study at Texas A&M University, rats with severed spinal cords and showed return of nerve function after approximately forty to fifty HBOT treatments.

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

A migraine headache begins with constriction of blood vessels in the brain. Reduced blood flow results in a lack of oxygen in the tissues, along with changes in the brain’s chemistry. This, in turn, causes the release of substances that greatly dilate the blood vessels. Because administered oxygen constricts the blood vessels while oxygenating the tissues, HBOT can reduce swelling by as much as 50 percent. This aborts the symptoms. In a study by Dr. William Fife and Dr. Caroline Fife, HBOT was given to 26 patients who had migraine headache pain. All but one patient obtained complete relief of migraine symptoms within minutes of exposure, including two patients who had temporary paralysis on one side of the face before HBOT treatment. Relief of symptoms occurs as quickly as five minutes after the migraine patient starts to breathe pure oxygen at between 1.3 and 1.75 atmospheres. Occasionally a pressure of 2 atmospheres is needed. f you have given your best it’s okay to win or lose. Really, the whole concept of competition is to determine who is the best at that time, on that day. Win or lose, when you compete with all your heart and put all you have to give in the contest, it’s always good to remember you’ve done your best no matter who takes home the trophy. Don’t get me wrong winning is the best place to be, but too often forgetting that there is only one winner among many competitors is a detour into frustration. Legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice is famed for his outlook regarding competition sports, and he is often quoted in just this context: “For when the great one comes, to mark against your name, He writes—not that you won or lost, But, how you played the game.” Called the ‘Dean of American Sportswriters” Rice looked at sport as a means to improve yourself, not a single-minded rush to win. In Taekwondo I look at the ‘journey’ as most important, not how many trophies you can amass as a ‘destination’. Fitness with a purpose gives us health, confidence from accomplishment, the skills of self-defense and the opportunity to compete. From my viewpoint as Grandmaster

Bad clothing, bad lights, and bad tires will always add up to a miserable ride. It becomes increasingly miserable and unsafe when in the rain and/or in the dead of night. On a bike, with decent clothing, good lighting and proper tires, even the worst of weather can be endured. When it comes to clothing for any athletic endeavor, I would ditch the cotton. Useless when wet and just as useless when hot and sweaty. Cotton in my opinion should simply be avoided. Warm, versatile, breathable jerseys, shorts, jackets, etc., are all widely available, and with careful shopping, can appeal to any budget. And taking care with proper layering, one can be comfortable in the chill of early morning, cool through the unexpected warm afternoon, and yet again be comfortable on the way home in the damp of early evening. Good clothing is never a regretted investment.

the straight and narrow. For example, mountain bikes that are never being ridden off road should shed those awful knobbies and be reoutfitted with something more suitable to the pavement. They are more efficient and safe. Roadies should check their tread. Is that fast training tire best suited for the general ride or a commute as we segue into cooler, wetter weather? How is its puncture resistance? Its durability? These questions pertain to all styles of riding and answers are are at hand. Where? Predictably, I will humbly suggest that if your seasonable inventory needs to be refreshed, one should call or visit your local bike shop. I sincerely and passionately believe that the informed staff at any of your local shops truly wish to help cyclists remain happy cyclists. It is there at your local bike shop that proper gear is readily available and a wealth of information there to dissect its pros and cons. Worth a visit.

Cycling Into Fall

his summer has seemed particularly long to me. As of this writing, temperatures are still hovering near the century mark, and riding in the afternoons should still be undertaken with care. But each September morning feels a bit cooler and the days are a bit shorter. But regardless of the temperature, the calendar will soon announce the arrival of Fall. And any change of season for those who regularly ride through the year should signal an inventory of their cycling gear. Clothing, lights, tires. These particularly should be given extra consideration.

This long summer will come to its inevitable end and autumn will be ushered in. I love the change of seasons, no matter its subtleties. Life just gets more interesting with change in the air. Don’t, as riders, be hesitant to change to that which may better enhance the road ahead. Before ending, I am going to presume to suggest two fall rides worth investigating. The first is into Hope Valley along Hwy 88. It is only two hours from Sacramento, near Lake Tahoe. Beautiful no matter the season, but during autumn, the Aspens put on a fall display that should not be missed. Spectacular. Great riding. The second is Stinson Beach to Point Reyes. Less than two hours from Sacramento, this thirty-two mile stretch is awash with incredible coastal views. The weather is typically excellent during the fall. It is after all, the California Coast. Bring light rain gear for the fog. Don’t forget the lights. One caveat, be careful on the weekends. This ride is much more bike friendly during the week. So suit up, pump up, and venture forth. Happy trails amigos.

Check your lighting. Riding and being unable to see what’s in front of you is madness. It’s dangerous for the rider and for whoever or whatever one subsequently smacks into. There are now rechargeable lights throwing out 300 lumens that can be had for around $50. These lights illuminate the road and allow other riders, drivers and various denizens of the parkway the ability to see what is coming at them. Good lighting will never disappoint. Tires seldom are given a great deal of consideration by most riders until they are flat, but everyone who mounts a bicycle should give thought to what it is that keeps them rolling on

A

s the weather shifts, and boy, could we use some rain to keep these blazing fires down, Lake Tahoe begins to open her doors to a new vibe called fall. Just as Lake Tahoe is regarded as the indisputable crown jewel of the Sierra Nevada, her autumn season is surely one of her best kept secrets as families wrap up their summer getaways, kids head back to school and the quiet before the storm, literally, returns with offerings of solitude that outdoor adventurers of all stripes and flavors savor. Aside from the expanded elbow room around Tahoe during the fall, a few other key niceties include the occasional light rain helping mountain bikers and hikers by firming the grounds at higher elevations; they can get really sandy in the summer heat and therefore, difficult to traverse. Another great thing about Lake Tahoe in the fall is that savvy travelers can find great discounts on lodging and accommodations. And of course, last but not least is the turning of the colors making for exceptional photography sessions. There’s been a major shift in marketing Lake Tahoe away from the “drive, gamble, eat, drink and sleep,” model towards geotourism, a relatively new concept that is attracting increasing interest around the world. Although the term has been in use informally since 1997, the 2002 Geotourism Study, sponsored by National Geographic Traveler magazine and conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America, constituted its public debut. Here is the definition: geotourism (n): Tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a

place - its environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture, and the well-being of its residents. MOUNTAIN BIKING around Tahoe is awesome with more than 150 miles of designated trails around South Shore alone. Excellent topographical maps of those trails are online at: http://www. mountainbiketahoe.org. Up on the North Shore, the world famous Flume Trail draws fitness buffs from all around the country, and world. The day I rode, a 60 something year old great grandmother from Arkansas caught up with me at the top; she was staying loose for the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Mile Race the next day. As mountain bike extraordinaire, trail blazer and owner of Flume Trail Mountain Bikes, Max Jones says, “Fall is a great time of year at the lake. Cool crisp nights, fewer people and lodging deals. Fall recreation for me is split between mountain biking some of the longer trails I did not have time for in summer and getting out rock climbing a couple of times a week. Staying fit for winter ski season.” If you don’t have a solid ride, there are plenty of rental shops around the lake with pro-style downhill bikes to go. Outfitters like Flume Trail Mountain Bikes include the whole shebang you’ll need for a hassle free day of riding epic trails, and include a helmet, pump, spare tube and a water bottle. They also provide shuttle service ($10 for bike renters and $15 for non-renters), as well as a great rustic café at the bottom for rehydration and

nourishment including some hand craft brews for the IPA lovers out there. Trail maps around The Flume are online at: http://www. flumetrailtahoe.com/trails_description.html STAND UP PADDLE boarding (SUP) may be the new-kid-on-the-block, but the emerging sport has swept across the lake like a bold zephyr. With countless events, competitions and rental shops catering to every age and ability, SUP’ing is definitely not a trendy fad, as many first said, but is here to stay. Aside from being just plain fun for the entire family, SUP is a tremendously great way to work out the entire body from head to toe. First off, balance is key, so SUP’ers are going to build up their core strength. The paddling element provides plenty of workout for the upper body and going downstairs, it’s the legs are working out without impacting the knees. SUP truly is a simultaneous aerobic and strength training sport giving practitioners great cardiovascular benefits

GETTING HERE Eco-minded adventurers should check out Amtrak. They offer several lines daily to Truckee from Sacramento’s downtown station. But those trains can also be boarded in Davis, Martinez, Richmond, Berkeley and Jack London Square in Oakland. Amtrak also has Thruway busses, but here’s the trick; you have to board them in Davis, and besides, honestly, if you park overnight, your car is going to be safer there anyways. and free board demos will be provided by Surftech and Tahoe SUP. Photos from past Tahoe Cup events are online at: http:// tahoecup.org/2013/07/19/jam-from-the-damgallery

while also melting stress away. The views are unique too as SUP’ers can look down some 75 feet thru clean, crisp emerald waters, and out over 10,000 foot peaks in every direction. O’Neil hosts the Tahoe Fall Classic on September 15; a 20 mile race from Camp Richardson to King’s Beach. This event has a $20,000 purse and plenty of divisions for all competitors. Spectators are welcome

SAILING requires pulling and hoisting sails, balance, agility and of course offers excellent relaxation benefits. Summer winds on the lake run between the 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots. Rentals run anywhere from $60 per hour for a 17’ Hunter to $500 for a full day aboard a 24’ sailboat or tours aboard a 65’ sailing yacht will run $49 per person for two hours. Action Watersports of Timber Cove Marina have more details online at: http://www. action-watersports.com GEO TOURISM On September 7 and 8, Sustainable Tahoe, a local non-profit, will be showcasing a weekend of geotourism all around the lake. The event, the 3rd annual Tahoe Expo features dozens of “geo tracks,” that include mountain biking, historical walks and talks, a Washoe Indian blessing of the waters, SUP’ing, yoga, mountain biking, green home dome tours, kayaking, a wild mustang tour, the Flume Mountain Bike tour, trout fly fishing at Squaw Valley, a tree-top adventure at Granlibakken, an art walk, live theatre, hula-hooping, dancing, live music a beer and wine garden, good food and even more. The Tahoe Expo will have a “base camp,” located at Lakeview Commons Beach off Hwy 50 in South Lake Tahoe and that event is free and open to the public. More details at: http:// www.tahoeexpo.com

The Zephyr, regarded by experienced travelers as one of the most beautiful train trips in all of North America, will run $64 for a round trip. Like the Thruway bus, she’ll stop in Truckee. Passengers can board the TART (Tahoe Area Regional Transit) shuttle for just a couple of dollars. This amazing shuttle is outfitted with bike racks, and caters to skiers too. This shuttle stops at Squaw Valley, River Ranch, Tahoe City, Homewood, Sunnyside, Carnelian Bay, King’s Beach and Incline to name a few. For $3.75, passengers get a 24 hour shuttle pass. The new North Lake Tahoe Water Shuttle, launched by the Tahoe Transportation District, is also a fun way to get around the North Shore while helping to reduce cars on the road. This year, due to high demand, shuttle rates were slashed in half and bikes are welcome. The Shuttle runs wide from Tahoma to Incline. Hours shorten up after Labor Day. Reservations are a good start at: http://www.northlaketahoewatershuttle.com/ This article was published, in large part, because of the environmental cleanup costs for the Tahoe Basin which run about $2.5 billion dollars every 10 years. But the activities in this story are all low and carbon neutral, save the travel it takes to get up to Tahoe. Let’s face it, Lake Tahoe is gorgeous, and people will visit. To address the environmental impact of traditional vacations at Lake Tahoe, the National Geographic Society published a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 20013, which was signed by all the major stakeholders with jurisdiction and stewardship of Lake Tahoe and its future. That MOU is available online at: http://www.doi.gov/news/archive/08_ News_Releases/080708.html

Grooming Tips Learned by Elephant Trainer David Loria By Dr. Donna, Editor

S

ince he was 13 years old, David Loria groomed and trained dogs. But after about 20 years, he grew bored with it and started thinking about other lines of work. Then one day after he had moved to Nevada, elephants happened to be walking down the street. Excitedly, he ran up to the security guard by the elephants and asked how he could get a job working with them as a trainer. They weren’t hiring, and hadn’t hired anyone in over 20 years. That didn’t stop David. He contacted them often and two weeks later, they offered him a job. “It was my enthusiasm I think they liked the most… I beat out a horse trainer and a lion trainer for the job and didn’t have nearly as much experience as they did,” he said. David worked with the famous celebrity elephant Bertha, who was frequently seen on stage with Liberace and Barbara Eden, and her act was often an opener to the shows at the casinos. Bertha had to be bathed daily with a bar of soap and scrubbed gently with a wire brush because elephants have sensitive skin. Her eyes, ears, and teeth had to be checked daily to insure they were healthy. Once a week, her trunk had to be checked for tuberculosis. All the elephant trainers also had to be checked for tuberculosis, too. “And I had to do her nails, too… Elephants have nails that are similar to ours where they have to be trimmed and filed. We had a little pedestal for the nail trimming session and

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

Bertha would have to put her foot up on the pedestal and then I’d file it. I’d notice her body moving a little – that was because she wanted to watch me file her nails! Elephants have eyes on the side of their head so they have to move their body to catch a glimpse of what’s happening on their toes,” he said. He’d finish up the session with polishing Bertha’s nails with white baby shoe polish, the only type of shoe polish that’s non-toxic. “I learned so much about animal behavior and grooming when I worked with the elephants,” David reported. “For example, I realized the importance of routines during the day for them and also the importance of keeping them exercised. It’s also really important to keep them intellectually stimulated.” David has the formula for keeping animals happy and is able to keep 10 dogs of his own – 6 pit bulls, 3 chihuahuas and 1 English Mastiff living peaceably. Some of them come with him to his grooming salon, Doggie Style, located at 5806 Watt Avenue in North Highlands, and you’ll meet them if you bring your dog in to be groomed. Here are some grooming tips David wants to share with you on grooming: • This one is so simple, but brush and comb your dog daily. Make it a 5-minute task but do it. It will prevent shedding.

• W alk your dog daily. You must get past the idea that feeding your dog and letting it go outside to the bathroom is enough. It’s not. • S pend more time with your dog than just giving it food and water. Maybe you can spend 20 minutes with your dog in the pool. Or take him to the dog park to play with others. Or play fetch for 10 minutes. You must do something else with your dog other than feed and water it. • W hen your dog gets pressure sores on it from laying around, or you cut the quick when cutting your dog’s nails, use what elephant trainers use – a product called Wonder Dust. It works for elephants, horses and dogs and it’s more economical than styptic powder or other similar products. Veterinarians use it as a professional dressing powder that stops bleeding and acts as a caustic and drying agent for slow-healing sores and infected lesions. It promotes the formation of healthy new tissue and if you happen to cut your dog’s toenails too short, will stop the bleeding. Pack it into the pressure sores or dip the toe into the Wonder Dust. If you’re looking for a place to get your dogs groomed, contact David at Doggie Style at (916) 332-9779. Check out his website at www.merchantcircle.com/ Doggie.Style.Grooming.Salon, or follow them at Facebook at www.facebook.com/ doggiestylegroomingsalon. And don’t be afraid to ask him to share some Bertha stories with you!

David Loria, owner of Doggie

His 41 years of grooming and training dogs, along with two years of training the celebrity elephant Bertha has given him the answer to dog boredom.

David recommends the book, Don’t Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor on dog training and wants you to remember to think like a dog whenever you consider interacting with your dog.

It’s structured exercise plans – and his plan could be considered more intensive than most people’s workouts at the health club.

If you know you’ll never be able to give your dog the exercise plan it needs, give David a call at Doggie Style Grooming Salon at (916) 332-9779 and discuss the idea of having him train your dog for you during the day. Only a limited number of dogs are scheduled each week for Doggie Fitness Programs.

Style Grooming Salon, located at 5806 Watt Avenue, North Highlands, loves pit bulls so much that he has six of them.

Does Your Dog’s Fitness Program Measure Up? By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C.), Editor

At his grooming salon, he also sets up fitness programs for dogs and acts as the dog’s coach during the sessions. “Some dogs need a program of only two days a week while others need three days a week,” he told us. “And the program varies, depending on the different dog breed. A small dog will have a very different program than a big dog.”

PETS

“The problem with pit bulls, like other dogs, is that they can get bored and then become hyperactive. That’s when all the big problems start,” he reported.

David also trains dogs to run alongside him on the bike and wants to share some of the steps he uses. “First, walk very slow with the bike next to you and your dog on the leash next to the bike. Do this for at least 10 minutes. Then get on the bike. Ride fast enough so the dog will start to trot. Before long, your dog will be able to do this automatically,” he said. “He’ll sense what you want to do next and follow your lead.” Speed up when you can.

Or set up a consultation with him about how you can do it yourself. His expertise is what you need. Check out his website at: www.merchantcircle. com/Doggie.Style.Grooming.Salon, or Facebook at www.facebook.com/doggiestylegroomingsalon.

For example, his pit bulls have a program that starts out with a high impact 15-minute walk in the neighborhood that tells the dog he’s in the leadership role from the very first step. “We stop at every street corner, then walk the bridge that leads to the air base three to four times. Next I’ll take the dog to all the tallest stairways on the base and he’ll run up and down them several times.”

Meanwhile, David is looking for anything in the environment that would double as an obstacle course to stimulate the dog’s brain, too. And next it’s off to the loud runways where the dog can get desensitized to loud noises. They’ll make their way back to his grooming salon and then it’s time for treadmill work and finally working out with weights. “We all rush off to work and then come home dead tired. We tend to forget that dogs need exercise to work off excess energy and stimulate the brain. But when they get it, they will do what they want to do the most – please their master.”

Camel Kisses for You, Too? By Dr. Donna, Editor

W

hen Marlin Troyer was a child, he never imagined he would be receiving dromedary camel kisses every day as an adult even though his father had a dairy farm. As a young man his family built log homes and then later Marlin opened up his own log home supply business called Natural Log Home Products. “After going into business for myself, I realized how my first love was the farm and missed being around animals. I began looking for something viable as a business,” Marlin said. “I visited a friend who is a broker in exotic animals. His advice was to try camels; with the many opportunities camel present, you can’t go wrong. So that’s how I got my first 3 camels.” “Camels are very loving animals. They have a split lip, and it’s the most tender part of their body. When you come out to the farm, they want to greet you, touch you and kiss you,” Marlin said with a smile. “Camels are the oldest domesticated animals in the world. They are always associated with a tribe of people. So they are really not a exotic animal at all.” Marlin Happily is the Trustee of the Camel Milk Association located in Michigan. You might think that camels shouldn’t be living in Michigan where it’s cold. Actually, the dromedaries have little problem

34 CELEBRATING

adjusting to the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. They’re hardy animals.

Camel Dairies More Complicated Than Cow Dairies Marlin was taking a big chance with the camels because milking a camel is no easy task. It takes some effort to train a person to milk a camel and for the camel and its calf to learn to work together with the handler to successfully produce milk. In fact, very few people were going into the business because of these difficulties. It wasn’t until the organic demand from the people learning about ethnic traditions and the studies about camel milk that farmers started considering raising camels for their beneficial milk. Soon Marlin added two camels, then two more, and more and more. He uses pharmaceutical grade filtering equipment and bottling techniques at the dairy. Since the milk is not pasteurized, bacterial and pathogen testing is performed regularly to mitigate coliform bacteria. “We never take a chance on milk. If a teat has to be milked by hand and there’s a cracked teat, we don’t use it. Milk used for the production of lotions and soaps doesn’t have such high standards,” he reported.

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

Research Studies Showing Health Benefits There have been reports that lotions with camel milk are helping improve skin health, facilitating faster healing of wounds and/or skin rashes. As a natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids, camel milk lotion could decrease wrinkles. The milk also contains defensins, anti-microbial peptides with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity. The whey protein in the milk expedites diabetic wound healing according to scientists in Saudi Arabia and decreased free radical levels while also restoring hydroxyproline content and cytokine levels in the wound. These are not the only research studies that back beneficial effects of camel milk on health. In one study reported in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011, three of the twelve Type 1 diabetes subjects reduced their insulin level to zero and experienced a decrease in mean blood glucose levels as well as hemoglobin A1c levels. Scientists concluded that camel milk was safe and efficacious in improving longterm (2 years) Glycemic control with a significant reduction in the doses of insulin needed. Similar results were reported in the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition in 2010 in diabetic

dogs receiving 250 to 500 ml camel milk daily. Experts advise that additional benefits don’t result from drinking more than a pint of the milk per day. And with the small amount of production per camel, the high cost of the milk and the limited number of camels, there’s virtually no chance that camel milk demand will ever exceed that for cow’s milk. Camel milk dairies sell pintsized bottles, never gallons, and there are only about 1000 milkable dromedaries in the United States as compared with 1,000,000 + milkable dairy cows. “Camel milk is not a panacea but there are definitely miracle stories out there about it. For me, it’s helped with my immunity. I used to get strep throat three to four times every winter and was always on antibiotics as a result. This last year I had nothing more than slight sniffles. It has helped my sinus congestion as well,” Marlin said.

Is Camel Milk for You? “Two things everyone should know about camel milk are 1) The camels are the most misunderstood creature in the U.S. and they should be looked at with a lot more respect. If the perception of the animal is changed, then it’s possible that the milk would help more people, and 2) The milk has a pleasant and palatable flavor. It tastes a lot like cow’s milk, but a bit sweeter and saltier.” So what could be sweeter than the kiss Marlin gets from his camels every day? The knowledge that people are feeling better… For more information, go to www.camelmilkforsale.com
