Instead of making the same old chicken recipes, mix it up with these unusual, funky flavors. From sweet and spicy to tangy and crunchy, these easy chicken flavor ideas up the flavor ante. Best of all, these four recipes are healthy for you too. These simple ideas are the best ways to cook boneless skinless chicken breast.
Best Ways To Cook Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast GUATEMALAN CHICKEN MOLE Everybody loves chocolate, but how many of those chocoholics eat it with chicken? Mole is a traditional savory sauce made out of chocolate. Dark chocolate is a great source of cancer-fighting antioxidants. To your next chicken dish, add pumpkin seeds, thus adding more protein and zinc. Add red pepper flakes and two different types of chilies, and make your chicken dish pack a spicy punch. Try something new for dinner tonight and combine chicken with chocolate in your recipe. LEMON YOGURT CHICKEN This flavor idea for boneless chicken is originally from Afghanistan, a country not typically known for its cuisine. Add invigorating lemon citrus flavor and creamy yogurt to make your chicken dish a lot lighter than traditional American chicken recipes. Plus, add whole garlic cloves mashed to a pulp. This Middle Eastern flavor idea is one of the best ways to cook boneless skinless chicken breast. HEALTHY CHICKEN JERKY Walk into any grocery store or gas station and you’re bound to see a bag of beef jerky. The concept of jerky, smoked meat, is common with beef but not with chicken. hen you exercise intensively, you INCREASE the free radical burden in your body. As a serious sports enthusiast, you should know that. The real news is what science is now finding out about your free radical burden. Everyone of us has an antioxidant protective capacity. Your body normally utilizes antioxidants to protect us against the harmful impact of free radicals. Antioxidants are molecular substances that offset free radical damage in the body. They neutralize their damaging effects on the cells of the body. Here’s more info on them: • Found in foods such as cranberries, green tea and even chocolate. • Antioxidants are vitamins like vitamin C, E, and carotenoids (beta-carotene). • Found in substances supplied by the body such as glutathione. • Found in many herbs and enzymes. The impact of antioxidants is boosted by glyconutrients to offset free radicals in your body. Antioxidant capacity must be provided in your sports nutrition regimen or you could be “robbing Peter to pay Paul” with your workouts. Without a glyconutritional presence in your sports nutrition, the healthful gains made by your physical workouts will be offset by your own free radical burden.
Free Radicals, Sports and Sports Nutrition
Free radicals are those chemical species that contain one or more unpaired electrons, capable of independent existence. They form in the body due to a variety of reasons as offshoots of cellular activity or as products introduced to the body from the outside. As an analogy, think of running a car engine as the cellular production and the car emissions as the free radical production. The engine produces products which cannot stay inside the car without further damage. They simply must be neutralized and expelled. Free radicals form and cause damage by reacting with many substances in your body. It is estimated that upwards of 200,000 free radical attacks occur in the body daily. When free radical damage is done, the body can remove the compounds formed by its cellular repair system. However, if the body cannot handle the
free radicals (with antioxidants for example), nor remove the compounds, then disease can be the result. Free radicals do not circulate throughout the body. The half-life of most free radicals varies in a range of a few nanoseconds to about 7 seconds duration. That means they will react within the “neighborhood” (a few Angstroms or microns near where the increase in free radicals occurred) ...organs, connective tissue, circulatory or nerve tissue, bone or lymphatic material are all candidates for free radical attack. Wherever they form, they will damage the surrounding areas, unless prevented by the body. The body does NOT have the luxury of just filtering away any circulatory fluids to find the free radicals. The body’s defense systems must be fairly omnipresent to neutralize the effects
of free radicals. The antioxidant protective system must be healthy. Since they are highly reactive substances, they react with all sorts of cell elements readily. When they react with cells, they can damage them and kill them. The damage can CHANGE the cellular structure enough to cause DISEASE such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and a host of others. The disease that occurs is dependent upon which of the free radical defenses weren’t functioning properly and where the free radical attacks occur.
HEALTH-WELLNESS & NUTRITION
ANTIOXIDANTS, FREE RADICALS & SPORTS NUTRITION
The body has pretty sophisticated antioxidant defense systems. But the body CAN get overwhelmed in its antioxidant protections against such free radicals. Unless antioxidant enhanced sports nutrition (with glyconutrients) are used to offset the increased free radical burden, the BODY will suffer as a result of intensive sports training, stress, and competition.
Glyconutrients VITAL to Sports Nutrition
Studies comparing marathon runners who did and did not take glyconutritional sports nutrition supplements were undertaken. When glyconutritional supplements were not used, the free radical burden upon the body was high. Antioxidant protection appears to significantly strengthen glyconutritional sports nutrition and of benefit for athletes overall, including during training, stress, competition and dietary issues. The glyconutrional revolution in sports nutrition and therapy is just beginning. More studies are being run. Sports nutrition is about to see a new revolution. I believe that it is quite probable that, with glyconutrition, sports PERFORMANCE is about to see a revolution in all fields.

ROLE OF PROBIOTICS IN OVERALL BODY CARE
P
robiotics were first introduced to Americans in 2003 as a functional ingredient in dairy products, breakfast cereals and snacks. Although initially skeptical about ingesting live bacteria, the benefits far superseded any reservations, causing probiotics sales to quickly grow. In 2008, the probiotics sector was valued at over $1.5 billiona significant growth of 160 percent, according to DataMonitor, a global business information provider. Most people taking a probiotic supplement/drink do so for the sole purpose of supporting digestive health. Probiotics increase the colonization of beneficial bacteria in the intestines and limit the proliferation of pathogenic or disease-causing bacteria. An optimal intestinal microflora is believed not only to enhance digestion, but promote general health and boost immunity as well. Because of the growing evidence of research supporting its benefits, consumer interest in probiotics products and supplements continues to rise.
Probiotics Offer More than Digestive Health Support
Unknown to many, probiotics offer health benefits that go beyond the scope of supporting digestive health. Recent investigations show that specific strains of probiotics may be used to treat specific conditions. Here’s a list of benefits that have well-documented scientific support: • A well-balanced intestinal microflora may help to regulate healthy cholesterol levels. • Probiotics may help to support the immune system and mitigate illnesses. Probiotics may stimulate certain immune cells. This could help prevent stomach and respiratory infections in children as well as skin infections. • The use of probiotics in uro-vaginal infections is well-supported by clinical trials and research. 4 CELEBRATING

• Probiotics may be used to promote oral health preventing tooth decay, particularly in children. Although this concept is relatively new, scientific support indicates probiotics therapy may hold a future in oral health. • Probiotics may also be prescribed to treat conditions that have baffled conventional science, such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lactose intolerance, certain allergies and skin infections.
Combination of Probiotics with Other Ingredients
Products that contain probiotics and a combination of other ingredients are gaining popularity since they offer wider benefits for health. PROBIOTICS WITH PREBIOTICS • Th e synbiotic combination of probiotics with prebiotics proliferates the growth of healthy microflora. Prebiotics are insoluble fiber, such as Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin, which reach the colon in a fairly undigested state. It is in the colon that probiotics feed on prebiotics through a fermentation process that takes place in the colon. During this process, byproducts called short-term fatty acids (SFA) are produced. SFAs help to maintain vital functions of the body and produce certain B vitamins. PROBIOTICS WITH ENZYMES •P robiotics can be combined with enzymes that help break down food substances into simpler forms to enhance nutrient digestion. Although there is some debate over probiotics and enzymes should be taken together and it presents

technology that ensures the survival of probiotics during manufacturing and storage by surrounding it with an outer coating. Microencapsulating protects probiotics from environmental contamination and prevents accidental mixing of probiotics with other ingredients in the formula that may compromise its stability.
Ensuring the Right Strain and Count
some challenges in manufacturing as well, there is still scope for a probiotics and enzymes product that has been well-formulated and manufactured using advanced technology. PROBIOTICS WITH MULTI-VITAMINS • Combining probiotics with a multi-vitamin is popular but poses challenges in manufacturing due to the sensitive nature of probiotics. Probiotics are sensitive to light, moisture, heat, oxygen.
How Probiotics Manufacturers Can Provide Retailers with Reliable Probiotics Supplements
The biggest challenge that probiotics manufacturers face is keeping the bacteria alive during the blending process while ensuring stability during shelf life. When combined with other ingredients that are equally sensitive, such as enzymes, extreme care should be taken to ensure that the manufacturing and packaging process take place in a dry environment. Any moisture may activate the enzymes and destroy the probiotics.
Microencapsulation
Microencapsulation is a fairly recent
The health-conferring benefits of probiotics are strain-specific. Different strains have specific functions in the body and not all strains are beneficial to health. Probiotic formulators must be well-versed in probiotic strains and the use of appropriate strains for the desired condition-specific functions. Slight variation in the genetic profile of strains could produce undesirable results. To make sure you are receiving the correct strain in your product, probiotic retailers may want their contract manufacturers to use branded probiotics. While branded probiotics tend to be more consistently reliable, quality supplement manufacturers who have a competent research team and stringent quality control checks at every level can also provide reliable strains and count.
Product Labels
Manufacturers should print clear instructions for use on the label. Some bacteria do not survive the acidic environment in the stomach or should not be eaten with hot (temperature) food. Product labels should also identify the genus, species and strain of the probiotics along with expiration date. Nutricap Labs is a vitamin and probiotics manufacturer. They primarily manufacture nutritional tablets, capsules, powders, liquids and creams, but also offer label and packaging design services and order fulfillment services to customers. entrepreneurs and restraunteurs. Together we are campaigning for community funding to launch the Roots vision. Indie Go Go is our first stage of funding and if you haven’t seen the video, you should: igg.me/at/roots. Roots Creative Kitchen offers Sacramento fresh, grab & go options and it fills a need that Gluten Free Specialty has not been able to fill, it provides people with specialty diets, quick options for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
n 2008, after struggling to find gluten free foods for 7 years, I started a buying club that quickly became a tiny grocery store for those of us without options in the local grocery markets. The first few years were intense to say the least. It was rough, but the store served a group of individuals and families that supported having a resource center and grocery market available for the community. Most days I worked 16-18 hour days and I was tired. In the entrepreneurial world, when your tired it’s easy to either mess up or give up and in 2011, I was doing both. My friends were concerned and pressured me to add yoga classes to my daily routine. After my first hour class, I was sold! It was the first time in years I had 1 hour a day to myself without phone calls, demands, check lists or customers and vendors needing my help and guidance. Yoga made me realize that I needed to slow down my life. Through yoga and self reflection, I began realizing that I needed to take care of myself and that I couldn’t take care of others unless I first took care of my health and well being. Initially, I thought this meant closing down the Gluten Free Specialty store. The business was created without ample investment and 2 grocery recessions had worn me out. In late 2012, I announced by email that the store was closing. Customers began asking if there
was anything they could do to help and that is when I began taking notes. I wrote down names, phone numbers, emails and what each person was offering to help with. I began to realize that I wasn’t just running a grocery store, I was serving a community of individuals and families with celiac and food allergies and it was time to ask for help. I began asking specialists to mentor me and I began networking more efficiently with local businesses and organizations. As I did this, I began to realize the reason I was struggling was that I was trying to do everything myself as a solopreneur and being a solopreneur was limiting the growth capacity of Gluten Free Specialty Grocery.

For the last few years, I have been working as an entrepreneur, on a new model of serving our community affordable, fresh, locally sourced foods that cater to specialty diets and that are allergen aware. The new model, Roots Creative Kitchen, involves a community team of over 32 creatives,
To make Roots Creative Kitchen happen, a kitchen and café must be built. $60,000 of the construction and development will come from our community, Almost $10,000 will come from landlord tenant improvements and we are hoping to acquire an SBA to match the funds that our community invests ($60- $100,000). The Roots Kitchen Movement and Campaign is about more than just creating a starting budget. It’s about asking our community if they support our endeavor and how much they support it? Currently we serve over 8,000 customers in the community, to expand into a café and kitchen we will need to triple our customer base. It will take at least 24,000 customers to make this happen. If half of those people give $5 to our campaign, then we can reach $60,000, the golden number. If we can raise this, then we know that are business model is worth launching and that it is viable. We know $60,000 is a lot of money (it is enough to pay all of the bills at Gluten Free Specialty for 2 months). Over the last 7 years, Gluten Free Specialty has put almost 3 million dollars into the community and with your help, we can grow that number in the future with Roots Kitchen. But we need your help to do it! With 12,000 $5 donations we can make this number easily. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can help make this project fly! Why “Roots Kitchen”? Where did the name come from? Our kitchen will be rooted in community; our kitchen will be funded using crowd funding and will be rooted in community funds. 6 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR RELATIONSHIP & KEEP IT FOREVER By James Redfield
Y
with an excessive sense of urgency that only heightens the tension. Be patient if you find someone has taken an unreasonable attitude. Accusations or demands can cause others to become even more uncompromising. Simply state your point of view and leave it at that.
ou may find what I learned in life: the more I had a giving attitude and communicated better, the more my relationships, romantic and otherwise, have improved. Here are some relationship enhancers, revealed by a recent study, that may hit home for you: 1. Respect Your Partner’s Point Of View Without respect in a relationship, one person is often left feeling they are not being heard, they have no say in decisions, and are not valued as an equal. Furthermore, blatant disrespect in the forms of put-downs, criticism, dismissal, disdain, and simple lack of courtesy, can quickly destroy any companionship. Disregard of another’s feelings can cause massive and permanent wounds to a relationship over time. Try hard to comprehend another’s outlook. When you do, you’ll feel this: “I acknowledge what you are saying. Even if I don’t agree with you, You have a valid viewpoint and the right to feel the way you do.” Disrespect says the opposite, “Your opinions, thoughts, feelings, and needs are unimportant to me and our relationship.” People in relationships who respect each other’s points of view, often compromise in an honest manner. Disrespect invites irrational CONTROL DRAMAS. This causes a team of two to become two people struggling for control, thus rendering it impossible for the relationship to have any equal leadership. 2. Display Kindness Instead Of Harshness At some point, everyone in a successful relationship must compromise to share power equally. Couples that can convey their

differences with kindness, instead of harshness, pave the way for positive communication that reinforces their sense of “us.” Even slightly raising your voice when bringing up an issue could provoke your companion to become frustrated and withdrawn. According to most relationship experts, conversations often end on the same note they began, so practicing this technique often creates a contagious response from others. 3. Take Your Time With Disagreements; Most People Will Self-Correct Most of us want to solve a problem or conflict immediately, but mistakenly,
WWW.HEALTHFITNESS.US
You’ll find that the other person will self-correct, and later return with a more positive understanding. Furthermore, you may realize that it was you, all along, who was being irrational. If this happens to be the case, then acknowledge your wrongdoings and resolve to be more mindful in the future. 4. Be Available To Each Other The capability of your relationship to sustain during the tough times has a lot to do with the amount of availability you give each other. Unfortunately, many couples become disconnected from each other for an array of reasons over time. Therefore, their relationship struggles to survive any time a rough patch comes about. To strengthen your relationship, begin to acknowledge the ordinary moments you share together,
rather than overlooking them. For example, if your partner wants to share something they are reading, take a moment to listen and show that you are attentive to their needs and wants. If you relish enough of the little things, you will find that when you truly need your partner, they are always there for you. 5. Don’t Become Too Critical When in a long-term relationship, couples can become complacent and begin to focus on common flaws and negative qualities in one another. They find themselves becoming critical and nitpicking their partner’s minor attributes. This can cause the other to develop self-esteem issues and deflate their confidence, when confronted in such a callous fashion. If you find yourself rooted in this habit of distorted thinking, try to break the cycle of how you’ve handled these annoyances, personally. The next time you have a negative thought about something your partner has done, seek to find a more neutral explanation for their actions. Another strategy is to consider whether you would judge yourself so harshly if the situation was reversed. 6. Don’t Leave Or Go To Bed Angry Seek to make amends after an argument. Leaving your relationship in a state of displeasure can cause irrevocable damage and resentment. Offer a genuine apology for your role in the problem. Agree to work on communicating with one another while maintaining a more considerate and understanding approach. A sincere effort to reconnect goes a very long way when moving forward to an authentic compromise. It speaks volume to your partner and says, “I care enough to want to make things right.” For more information, see www. celestinevision.com. H&F

CREATINE FOR ANTI-AGING?
A NEW STUDY PROMISES TO CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT THIS SUPPLEMENT By Daniel Lee
Y
ou may have heard of using creatine to help build muscle. But did you know it can actually protect your DNA from damage and mutation? Astounding new evidence supports using creatine for anti-aging benefits! A recent study shows that not only does creatine fight muscle loss, but it can improve brain function and may even help with inflammation, one systemic cause of aging. In fact, it may also help with fatigue, muscle atrophy, and even such diseases as Parkinson’s disease or Huntington’s disease. It may also help with brain pathology or mitochondrial disorders. First, let’s take a look at the process of aging. Aging is caused by oxidants (free radicals) in the body. These molecules are very unstable and cause reactions and damage with every type of tissue they come into contact with. As time goes on, the free radicals cause cellular and DNA damage through the entire body. Eventually the tissues, of skin, eyes, brain, lungs, liver, kidneys and virtually every other organ become ineffective and the organs begin to malfunction. Cancers may also develop due to the DNA damage from free radicals. The only way to combat the damage caused by these free radicals is to introduce antioxidants into your system though supplementation and eating fresh healthy foods. These antioxidants seek out the free radicals and react with them, turning them into harmless compounds. DNA damage is associated with a wide variety of disorders including cardiovascular disease, a wide variety of tumors affecting the head, neck, breast, kidney, colon and lungs. In the study, two plates containing DNA were exposed to oxidizers that destroy the DNA and break the molecules down. In one of the plates the researchers added creatine. After sitting overnight, they found the DNA plate without creatine added was almost completely destroyed. In the one containing creatine, the DNA was almost completely preserved! After years of research, it seems that creatine actually binds to DNA and destroys the oxidizers as they attempt to destroy the DNA strands. This is especially good news as it is very difficult to get
most antioxidants to bind to the mitochondrial DNA. Creatine is a wonderful supplement as is the most widely used exercise supplement in the world. As we age, creatine can be an important part of protecting our tissues from oxidative damage. Creatine is also very good at preventing muscle wasting as we age. Of course, this has benefits for younger adults in that as they get older, they may not
AS WE AGE, CREATINE CAN BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF PROTECTING OUR TISSUES FROM OXIDATIVE DAMAGE. have the muscle wasting their older peers suffer from. And of course, because sarcopenia (muscle wasting) can very possibly be prevented with creatine supplementation, it’s much easier to prevent it from happening at all than it is to try to correct it after it does. In fact, supplementation with as little as 5 grams of creatine in 28 healthy adults involved in resistance training showed significant improvement in the extension strength, ankle strength, intramuscular creatine levels, and strength in general. Of course, what this translates to is that not only is fat loss stimulated, but also leads to greater strength and flexibility. As we age, we do not have to lose function and in fact, can even gain function with proper exercise and creatine supplementation. One possible contraindication is its use in those with kidney disease. Some have suggested that excessive intake of creatine can increase levels of
creatinine, a byproduct of creatine that is most often present in those with kidney disease. It is not known whether creatine itself is harmful in those with kidney disease and actually affects kidney function, or whether it simply raises creatinine metabolites. Nonetheless, for healthy adults, supplementation with up to 5 g of creatine a day has been shown to have no ill effects whatsoever thus far. Given its significant benefit, healthy adults can probably supplement very safely with creatine to prevent a wide range of age-related issues including DNA damage and muscle wasting. Used along with a healthy diet and an exercise program, creatine can be a pillar of your program to promote long-term health. STEREOTYPING, DISCRIMINATION AND SEGREGATION FOR USING A NATURAL MEDICINE: ABSURD OR ACCEPTED? California voters passed Proposition 215 in 1996. This gave medical cannabis patients protection from criminal prosecution in the state; however, it does provide any civil protections. Almost 2 decades later, medical cannabis patients are still facing stereotyping, discrimination and segregation for choosing an alternative medicine.

very day people are choosing to use natural nontoxic remedies such as medical cannabis. As the side effects of pharmaceutical medicines grow, patients are expanding their options with various alternative therapies.
Stereotyping: The other day at a birthday party for my child’s friend, I was stereotyped. One of the mothers asked what field I was in. I replied I am a medical marijuana patient’s rights advocate and am the managing board member of a local medical marijuana dispensary. She laughed, replying, “If you want to sit on your couch all day getting stoned and watching TV, that’s alright with me. I’m just not into it.” At first I didn’t know what to say. I defiantly don’t use cannabis to get high.
I actually work to educate people on how to use the least amount of cannabis to cover their symptoms. I responded, “There are many stereotypes of medical marijuana patients out there. I actually work to educate people on the correct uses of cannabis and advocate for more regulations in the industry. Oh, and I don’t have a TV.” I went on to explain the long list of illness and disorders that our patients suffer from and the never ending work I do to educate the public and government on their plight. I thought to myself how much easier it would have been to just talk about my other job as a yoga instructor. Discrimination: That situation is minuscule compared to the discrimination that many patients suffer on a daily basis throughout California. There are currently no laws on the books that protect patient’s rights to their housing, jobs and healthcare. As it stands, medical cannabis patients can be fired or evicted for having a doctor’s recommendation. They can lose their access to health insurance, pain-relieving pharmaceuticals and organ transplants just for choosing to use an herb to alleviate their symptoms. With my positions on the boards of Sacramento Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and the Sacramento Chapter of Americans for Safe Access, I hear many sad stories of patients being denied jobs, housing and healthcare. Please don’t get me wrong I am not advocating for people to abuse marijuana or to use it while working. I believe that those patients that use it to relieve the symptoms of legitimate illness and disorders should not be treated differently than a patient using a standard pharmaceutical for the same symptoms. Patients are in desperate need of an Assembly member or Senator to step up to bring forward a bill to protect patient’s rights throughout the state.

Segregation: Within California, every city and county has the responsibility to regulate land use including where medical marijuana dispensaries are located. Many of the more conservative City Councils and County Board of Supervisors have voted to ban dispensaries within their borders even if their citizens voted in favor of Proposition 215. These bans deny patients their right to access their doctor recommended herbal medication. The majority of the more open-minded governing bodies have opted for segregation. By enacting ordinances that position dispensaries on the outskirts of town in industrial zones, patients have limited safe access. Out of the bounds of public transportation, financially challenged patients are left without any legal means to obtain their medicine. The City of Sacramento has one of the most extensive regulating ordinances in place within California, allowing for about 25 dispensaries. The City Staff took 2 years to write their ordinance. The ordinance requires each dispensary to undergo a rigorous permitting process with random inspections and audits as well as follow a long list of rules to stay in operation. These stringent regulations allow the dispensaries to operate in commercial zones similar to pharmacies. This gives patients safe access to secure, professional businesses providing lab tested medications. With many of the dispensaries being close to doctors, pharmacies and hospitals; your grandmother has safe places to access medical cannabis if she chooses to use it. Over the last century we have seen so much progress in regards to ending stereotyping, discrimination and segregation for minorities of many different groups. I have hope that someday a medical marijuana patient will be classified as a patient. Someday patients will not be looked down on for using a safer, natural remedy.

Here is a better idea: Let’s try to take baby steps together. The majority of us spend more time at work than we do at home. Logically it makes sense to let this be the setting for our change. Become more assertive about your fitness goals. You may find others are on their own journey to improve their physical health and welcome your company. In an office setting the primary source of communication is email. Skip it. Instead create a simple flyer and walk around the office handing them out to people. Some people may not be willing to participate and that is okay. Ultimately you want to get a support group together of people who are serious about improving.
Make it Fun Throw out a friendly challenge. See who can walk a mile the fastest. Who can take the stairs more often in a week? Who can slim down the most in a 60-day time span? Small challenges like this speak to the competitive nature that resides in most of us. It also makes the focus change from weight loss to just plain winning. You get so caught up in trying to win the challenge that you forget you were trying to lose weight.
Bow Down to Conformity We are social creatures. Once we have been around someone or a group of people for a while, habits and characteristics tend to spill over onto each other. Use this to your advantage. Consciously create healthy habits. Encourage a salad-themed pot luck.
Bring a healthy snack and speak about how good it tastes and how it gives you energy. Rave about how much money you save by opting to eat it versus fast food. Once the masses embrace the healthy habits, the rest will follow.
Brag on Each Other In this support group, make it a normal part of conversation to check up on each other. When you notice that someone’s hair has gained more luster, or someone’s skin is clearer make a point to tell them. Next take it a step further and spread the word. Clients at The Holistic Sanctuary say Johnny’s method is a lifeline – and exactly what they needed to get back into the game of life.
Scientists in the Psychopharmacology Journal reported in May 2014 that “An enormous amount of resources has been devoted to the development of pharmacotherapies for drug addiction, with relatively little or no long-term success reported.” Politics play a huge part in the game of medicine and some groups say the medical mafia controls it. There’s a group of corrupt people and shareholders who only want profits and their portfolio to grow, not patients cured. METHADONE SUBOXONE MAINTENANCE THERAPY IS TOXIC AND DEADLY TO CELLS What happens is that these centers give more highly addictive pharmaceutical drugs like suboxone and methadone to those with opiate addiction, and the withdrawal for methadone and suboxone can last longer than 4 years. As an opiate, methadone magnifies the effects of other opiate residues in the body, which causes lung failure and heart fluctuation that causes a sudden heart attack. Methadone disrupts calcium regulation and causes mitochondrial changes linked to other negative side effects.
No Urge for Any Medications Anymore One optional part of the program is the plant-based medicine, like ibogaine treatment and ayahuasca, initiated by Shamans and Master Healers to accelerate spiritual healing. Both these treatments are illegal in the U.S. and can cause hallucinations and visions. Both plants are not addictive and penetrate into the person’s core, awakening them to how their addictions affected them and those around them. A medical team cares for clients 24/7 at the clinic to insure safety.
and focus on releasing negative thought patterns. Are you ready for it? Are you open to lifestyle changes that include yoga, meditation and organic diet? You can’t get cured eating at McDonald’s, drinking sodas and eating non-organic food.”
Medically Proven Recovery Via Imaging Studies The 90-day program in the Pouyan Method Protocol includes a PET brain scan before and after the treatment, which clearly illustrates healing of the brain in as little as 90 days. “You come here, you’re broken, you leave and you’re healed and I can show that on a brain scan,” he said.
In fact, the cutting edge treatment at The Holistic Sanctuary may be something you can invest in. If you are a philanthropist seeking a business to invest in that will become a method used by the addiction recovery industry, contact Johnny at THS directly. SPORTS NUTRITION PROTEIN AND THE BENEFITS OF TAKING IT WITH A SPORTING DIET By Michael Grants
A
s an athlete, you must be accurate about the nutrients your body requires to accomplish maximum achievement. Every athlete generally desires to be unparalleled in their chosen sport. But if you want to be well-recognized as an athlete, you must have beneficial nutrients in your consistent food intake, especially with sports nutrition protein. Whilst it is certain that drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet is enough for the regular guy, sports people need increased nourishment for the adequate creation of physical energy. When your uncompromising training is accompanied by the correct amount of sports nutrition protein, this aids you in maximizing
your athletic ability. It also helps you acquire more power, strength, and endurance as you train. The dynamic of these factors is simple: your talent and drive keeps you in sports and the need for relentless training. To endure the training, you need sports nutrition protein. This will help prepare you for your next training session. First of all, recognize where sports nutrition proteins come from. Proteins come in animal products such as meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products and plant-based foods like beans, nuts, and vegetables. These foods should supply 12-15 percent of your daily calorie intake. And this is where the challenge lies — how to
We specialize in: Inferno Hot Pilates® Kettle Combat® TRX® Zumba® Bikini Butt® and more!!
extract the needed amount from this food without consuming the excess bulk. This is the reason why sports nutrition protein was formulated. The reason behind this is similar to that of vitamin supplement intake. You take vitamin C in its elemental form because, in order to get the needed amount of vitamin C, you have to eat several oranges frequently. It’s the same with sports nutrition protein. You don’t need to consume kilos of meats and beans on a daily basis. The amount of sports nutritional protein you will need depends on your fitness level, work routine, and the intensity/duration of your exercise. Total calorie intake, which includes carbohydrates, also plays a prominent role in your protein intake. But bear in mind that protein is not only a source of energy but also gives your body the ability to build new muscle tissues. Figuring out how much protein you need can be nutritional information difficult to find unless you have your own sports nutritionist or advisor at your local gym. Here’s an example of the proper amount of sports nutrition protein that should be consumed when performing regular exercise: If you weigh 80kg, multiply 80 by 2.2 which would then give you your weight in pounds. 80 x 2.2 = 176 lbs. This number means you would need to eat 176 grams of protein a day. In order for this amount of protein to be effective, you will need to be working out daily. If you consume too much protein and are working out, it will have a negative effect by turning to fat. It is essential that you get this nutrient right if you are looking to build more muscle.

If you’re a starting athlete, you will need more sports nutritional protein compared with what you needed before you began working out. And if the type of sports you are in includes endurance exercise, you will frequently burn protein for fuel. The need for sports nutrition proteins is more notable. You should also realize that the body burns more protein if you do not consume sufficient calories; this is the body’s way of compensating to maintain the correct balance. Not enough food and nutrients coupled with too much exercise causes this to occur. Your body can also use protein as a way of gaining energy as long as the exercises use up small of amounts of muscle glycogen (also know as sugar) or if you are doing a sustained amount of exercise that will use up a lot of carbohydrates. This is the reason why specially formulated nutrition, like sports nutrition protein is a requirement. Interested more in sports nutrition? It’s not like we hate the crazy type weddings; it’s more like we’re wondering what you think. Maybe We’re Traditional Monterey, California ~~~ Hey Maybe, GREAT question! I wonder how many adults checked their thoughts when 60’s and 70’s rock music was being decried as a “Sign of The End”! My guess is not many adults of the 1960’s/70’s went beyond finding something wrong with the rock music genre and phenomenon. Today many of us want to be more “aware” and not just judge new paradigms. This leaves us frequently asking, “Is this ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’?!” Bear with me for one second as I have to state the fairly obvious: Each to his/her own (right?). And “As long as no one gets hurt, go for it!”...Sort of… As true as those statements (relatively) are, there’s more to the “Do Your Own Thing”/”If It Feels Good, Do It” paradigm. What about how our actions affect others? Our individualistic culture (in the USA) emphasizes individualism and creative free self-expression. That’s one side of that Yin-Yang paradox. And are we “Old Farts” if we have some respect for tradition and/or traditional values?! NO! Traditions provide… • Structure – Supporting people feeling a part of a culture or subcultures. Seeing the Bride walk down the aisle confirms for everyone, “this is a real Wedding,” for example.
• Confirmation/Acceptance of The Value(s) of Community – Providing people with the opportunity to express respect and/or other appreciation for how their community (family, neighborhood, etc.) contribute to their lives. The President of the United States says the same Presidential Oath as his/her predecessors because that places him/her within the framework of past presidencies. It honors the office and title to put one’s individuality and “freedom” aside to accept and participate in traditions, which are MUCH greater than our individual Selves. Wedding Ceremony elements are opportunities to choose how to express an understanding of the history(ies) and meanings of Marriage and Wedding, and contemporarily, also a way to express ourselves. Of course, not every element speaks to the understanding, beliefs and values of every couple! Would you like to be FORCED to do something that you totally hate? But are you willing to include some aspects of your Life which may not be totally fun or rewarding, but can reward, acknowledge or otherwise support your family and/or community?! Traditions do such very well! I’ve often been asked, “Mitch, do you meet couples that you just know won’t make it?!” While I’d never be so pompous as to suggest I know a couple’s future, I also acknowledge that couples who “make it” are tremendously diverse in how they approached and “do” their relationship. Hey Mitch, So you perform weddings which is very cool. My wife and I have been noticing that there’s a lot of funky weddings anymore. What’s with that?
Wonderfully, “we Americans” have broken from the binds of historical structures, escaping abuse and other demeaning and/or traumatic aspects. Meanwhile, many of us therefore lack a spiritual/ ethical/community foundation to guide our decisions and actions. Many a well-meaning person isn’t sure about how to handle some situations or challenges because right and wrong aren’t clear. My Brides and Grooms are empowered to consciously choose every aspect of their Weddings. We discuss the meanings and/or purposes of the wide spectrum of ceremony options, and my couples identify what works best for them. It’s not about right or wrong but about choosing options which are empowered with insight and understanding of individual and community dynamics! That’s really the best we can do: Endeavor to make conscious, informed, spiritually-centered decisions. “Being right” or “having the answers” is not the goal. ARE YOU A VICTIM OF HIGH ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS LIKE ALISON WAS? By Dr. Donna, Editor
F
or over 25 years, Alison Heath, known as “The Longevity Rescuer”, helped thousands of individuals and physicians learn to turn back the clock on aging via nutrition and antiaging strategies and enjoy vibrant health. But she never could have known she would be faced with a health problem outside her scope of knowledge of alternative health.
your ear, and eating a snack in a coffee shop that has WIFI. Your exposure to EMR is cumulative so over time, negative effects on the cells can cause heart rhythm problems, concentration issues, cataracts, vision changes, stress responses, inflammation in the body, disrupted hormone levels, impaired immune system and is even linked to neurological disorders and high blood sugar levels.
Alison was living in a beautiful new penthouse condo in beautiful Kelowna BC with high speed internet. She used a cell phone as her only phone like many people do, and her condo was separated from the others by an electrical storage room. Shortly thereafter, the symptoms started.
The Quickest Way to Ruin Good Health: High Levels of Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR)
Within 5 months, Alison’s excellent health had dwindled to poor health. “I felt that I was going to have a heart attack or a stroke... there was a constriction in my chest as if it was being tightened in a vice-like grip. I would wake up at night by what I thought was a thunderstorm. It was my heart pounding in my ears and neck! My usual resting heart rate is 57-65 beats per minute but my heart was racing at 85 beats a minute,” she said. The symptoms didn’t stop there. They included intense headaches, dizziness causing stumbling, insomnia, desperate urination trips to the bathroom, rapid aging, anxiety, nervousness and agitation. In the later stages, she couldn’t remember computer passwords or software programs she had used for years. Luckily, Alison met a woman at a local organic food coop who happened to mention she was sensitive to the dirty electricity and WiFi in the building, which is called electromagnetically hypersensitivity or EHS. “As she spoke, I felt a glimmer of understanding... This might be what was happening to me.” Alison took action and measured the electromagnetic radiation in her condo. The scale read from 0.1 uW/m2 to 1999 uW/m2. Her condo measured higher than the scale! She immediately made plans to move within three days to a house with no WIFI, no cell phones, no SMART meters, SMART appliances; was not near a cell phone tower, and had filters for the dirty electricity. 18 CELEBRATING

WHEN YOU ARE EXPOSED TO AN ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD DIFFERENT THAN YOUR OWN FREQUENCY, YOUR BODY LOSES ITS RESONANCE AND SIGNALS BECOME DISRUPTED. Where EMR Originates
All electrical appliances put out a field of electromagnetic radiation, as does your car, cordless phone, computer, baby monitor, etc. Since your nervous system runs on electricity, your body gives off its own electromagnetic frequency. However, when you are exposed to an electromagnetic field different than your own frequency, your body loses its resonance and signals become disrupted. The electromagnetic radiation from these fields is great enough to cause cell dysfunction in numerous ways, whether you are aware of it or not, symptoms may start and you will soon lose any sense of health and wellness you have had. EMR can be caused by putting an alarm clock on your bedside stand, holding your cell phone next to

Alison’s life partner’s health also went downhill fast when he was subjected to high levels of EMR, and although he had a clear bill of health from his doctors, he mysteriously passed away from symptoms that could have indicated a high EMR was the cause.
Alison Mustered Up Strength to Help Others
Every day she grounded herself by walking barefoot in the garden and swimming in a nearby lake. The healing began. The problem was that she knew others were suffering from the affects of EMR as well. She called researchers, physicians, microwave weapons experts, and authors on subjects related to EMR and put together an online conference for the public called www.EMFsummit. com to explore all aspects of the full spectrum of electromagnetic fields (EMF), including how protect yourself and loved ones from the harmful radiation. “I interviewed many of the top EMF experts in the field from around the world and each one of them offered many suggestions of what could be done to recover from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. The more I used these suggestions, the better I felt...” she said. “If this could be the root of your health problems, why not find out before you get in a situation like I was in? This information is not known by most doctors and is vital to everyone’s survival!” Plans are underway to extend the website to include practical and proven shielding strategies and sources. “Our Creator provided us with a book of instructions in the holy Bible which tell us the foods we are to eat, verse by verse. The foods and verses are listed in my book on pages 85-87,” said Oliver Smith, author of Eating Healthy God’s Way. The book, published in 2011, focuses on what to eat according to God’s original plan for your health.
Eating Healthy God’s Way is an easy read, 128 pages long, and filled with plenty of examples from modern-day scientific studies that actually confirm the original instructions given in the Bible. You’ll get the exact scriptures to back it up as well. It’s a must-read for those who want to stay healthy in their older years and are planning now, and those who want to get back on the ‘right’ road to health.
“The Centers for Disease Control reports that nine of the top 10 diseases are caused by faulty diet. These nine causes of death include heart attacks, cancer, stroke, chronic respiratory diseases and influenza, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, kidney disease and septicemia. (Only accidents are not caused by diet.)”, he said. “If you’re looking for a source of information that will lead you away from the development of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and other degenerative diseases, this book will help you make a lot of rapid progress.” Oliver has been eating this healthy diet himself for the last 15 years, and although he’s in his senior years and would be considered to be in various groups of people at risk for several degenerative diseases, he has remained free of disease and does not take any prescription drugs. “There was a study done by Charles Northen in the late 1800s that taught us something quite interesting about diet. Northen discovered that lab animals could be fed a diet to cause disease and fed one to reverse the disease. This was all dependent on the minerals in the diet. The soils we grow food in are depleted of essential minerals. We get

VEGETARIAN CHILI RECIPES
5 TIPS TO MAKING GREAT VEGETARIAN CHILI! By Richard L. Blaine
W
e all know vegetarian chili has no meat in it! And the old saying of “fat is where the flavor is” well, that does hold true, does it not? So what do you do to add flavor to vegetarian chili recipes? Add chilies for a bit of heat and some flavor. Here are 5 simple tips to making great vegetarian chili recipes:
to add a layer of protection from the chili pepper juices. Of course if you do not want to chop your chili peppers then you can grind them in any number of ways and with any number of kitchen gadgets.
Tip 1. Know thy chili peppers! Getting to know the chili peppers you will use will help you in figuring out just how much heat you can take in your chili dish. The trick is to know which types of chili peppers are the hottest. A jalapeno and habanero are some of the hottest chili peppers around. Pepper spray for the police is made out of habanero chili, so you can imagine how hot it is! If using this type of chili in your dish, use it sparingly and work your way up to the heat level
CHILI IS A SYNERGISTIC FOOD. IT TASTES FINE BY ITSELF, BUT CHILIES ONLY ENHANCE THE TASTES OF OTHER ELEMENTS IN A RECIPES AND THE OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE RECIPE ENHANCE THE FLAVOR OF THE CHILI. that you are satisfied with. In most cases, most people use the good old standby of the Jalapeno chili pepper and that is fine. They have a mild/ medium heat and most people can handle that. Tip 2. When you are cooking your vegetarian chili recipes, it is a good idea to start adding your chilies toward the end of the dish around the last two hours of cooking. blend and when you add the chilies, you add another layer of texture as well as flavor. Add slowly and taste often with your spoon until the desired heat level is reached. Chilies are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants that are good for your immune system. Chilies are also thermogenic and help in losing fat if you eat them in your diet.
Tip 3. Chilies are rated by Scoville heat units. This means that some chili peppers can actually burn the skin, eyes or nasal passages. Do not handle chili peppers with your bare hands! If you have cooking gloves, use them! If you do not have cooking gloves, get some! If that it is not possible at the moment, then coat your hands in olive oil
WWW.HEALTHFITNESS.US
Tip 4. How much heat from chili do you think you can handle? If not much, there are a couple of things that you can do. The first thing is to get the seeds out of the chilies. Another tip is to cut out or remove the “ribs” inside the chili peppers. There is much debate as to what is the hotter part of the chili pepper, the ribs or the seeds? I personally do not care because in my humble opinion they are both real hot! Taking these steps will reduce the heat of many chilies to something a bit more mild in heat for your vegetarian chili recipes. Tip 5. You know the old saying “Man and woman cannot live by bread alone.” Well, man and woman cannot live by chili alone, either! Chili is a synergistic food. It tastes fine by itself, but chilies only enhance the tastes of other elements in a recipes and the other elements of the recipe enhance the flavor of the chili. Chili peppers added to things like onions, garlic, various beans, hard tofu or tofu products, and fire roasted tomatoes can really make your vegetarian chili recipes fly! Do not add all these ingredients together at the same time. In fine dining, it is called building layers of flavor. Start the recipe by mixing and sauteeing of the items that are not hot and slowly add in your chili peppers. Keep in mind a little touch of salt and a little touch of either black or white pepper brings out more flavors. Check out more at www.bestchilirecipes.net H&F

hich recreational sport is right for you? This is a simple question, sometimes without a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. A recreational sport is any sport activity or event one engages in during leisure time; something performed for entertainment and fun.
4. Since a recreational sport is for leisure, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one’s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. The more time one has, the more options to choose from and vice versa. 5. Seasonality definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer seasons. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport you can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year. It is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.
Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with the sport, this is not usually the main goal. Participating in leisure activities may also be for the purpose of fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support. Leisure activities range from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their former professional sports although it’s at a recreational level. Choosing the right recreational sport is a choice for beginners, and in that process, consider the following general guidelines: 1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about. It will become part of your lifestyle and needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don’t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport. 2. Choose a sport in line with your goals. For example, someone looking for a recreational sport to aid in losing weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sports

RECREATIONAL SPORT: STEPS TO FOLLOW WHEN CHOOSING YOUR LEISURE SPORT
6. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples. This is not an exhaustive list of guidelines but one only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment. as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.
CHOOSING SOMETHING THAT YOU DON’T LIKE OR HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CAN BE
3. Different sports require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. For example, golf requires a golf club, balls and shoes, plus an accessible golf course. If you have more than one recreational sport you are considering, you may have to choose convenience based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course.

ISLAND ANGELS BRINGS A TROPICAL TWIST TO CAREGIVING By J. Renee

hoosing a qualified person to take care of a loved one is something no one wants to do. Curl Langeman, Founder of Island Angels, located at 8611 Folsom Blvd, in Sacramento, and her staff make the choice a little easier.
“Being able to make a difference at a critical time in someone’s life is very self rewarding,” Curl stated. Her personal services were in high demand and they requested her return after only one or two visits. The inspiration to start Island Angels as a business came a few years ago from a woman Curl was caring for. This 101-year-old woman constantly encouraged Curl to get her own business going. At that time, Curl wasn’t a newbie in the field and had experience working for Eskaton and
Sutter. Most of her clients were hospice patients. But finally in 2012, she opened the doors to Island Angels. Out of the Ordinary Values Include Reverence “Our caregivers are mostly from Fiji and the South Pacific Islands. Our
values and beliefs are very different,” she confided. “We revere seniors. They are our priority. We are committed and dedicated to taking care of them until their departure. We come into this field with the same attitude. Taking care of anyone means taking care of our own. It’s not just a job... there is a connection.” Curl has made it almost irresistible to accept care from Island Angels.

When a family finally decides that a caregiver is needed, a lot of hours went into that decision. Fears arise, concerns present themselves, and guilt sets in. The act of bringing in a caregiver is almost as unbearable as the situation which demands it. Curl’s approach to these barriers is simply a no obligation appointment. This is an assessment where she visits the home or primary location where the client will reside. She likes to get an intuitive feel for the environment, the family and the client. The information she gathers helps her provide a personality match to the caregiver. It is absolutely vital that the caregiver and the client are compatible because compatibility brings understanding and forges bonds. The intent of an Island Angel coming into your home is to preserve dignity, allowing a person to help and care for themselves as much as they can. The caregiver is on standby as their companion, someone to advocate for them, and listen/support them when it is needed. They offer help and allow the person to accept it. Upholding the dignity of the client will allow them to start trusting the caregiver overnight. Curl wants to expand Island Angels in the very near future and reach out to caregivers who can associate themselves with Island Angels’ beliefs and values. “Caregiving is not for everyone,” she said. “You must have the right mindset and absolutely the right heart.”
ness only to be presented with a battle of their own. Curl enjoyed caring for them and helped them achieve a breakthrough. She let them know she was there to reciprocate the support they once showed others and understands the struggles and emotional roller coaster that comes from dealing with cancer. Often, family members will not talk to other family members about end of life worries and struggles but they will confide in a caregiver. Fees, Agreements and Care Area Curl gives special consideration to clients on a limited budget. Rates are not set in stone; 99% of the time they are able to secure an arrangement that is a win-win for both parties. Clients and their families are not locked into contracts but an agreement is put in place. “A client has a right to be happy in their own home. If services are no longer desired, simply provide a 48-hour notice to us.” However, she is very confident her caregiver can make them happy and more fulfilled with her care. Island Angels are licensed to give care in Chico and Davis, and open to serving in any region. s it possible to have a gardening and farming method better than organic? Yes, says Geoff Lawton, one of the world’s top teachers of a little-known farming/gardening method called Permaculture. Lawton has been an advisor to many of the top governmental officials in 30 different countries who had been searching for ways to restore their land resources and feed their population. He studied Permaculture from Bill Mollison, the founder of Permaculture back in the 1970s and has been using the principles ever since. What is Permaculture? The word Permaculture is comprised of two words — permanent and culture, which gives a clue as to what it is. Permaculture is the use of methods that design the land to be totally in sync with nature so they will support a culture permanently. You might think of it as having a Garden of Eden on your property that continues to be sustainable, doesn’t take much work for upkeep, and allows you to become more of a human being with free time to be social and help others. The land design often includes a food forest, water systems that trap and make water
gardening and makes organic gardening look like a bad idea. On one of his videos, Lawton visits an organic farm in California where he explains that the problems: 1. They irrigate the land which depletes the underground aquifers. Thus, they’re creating a water deficit in the future. 2. They exploit the agricultural workers, giving them low wages and create a poor quality of life for them. 3. They do nothing to restore soil fertility.
fertility and turn a desert into a lush food forest — and in time, even have springs sprout up that didn’t exist before. Lawton has seen this happen many times where barren deserts become food forests and on some of his videos, he shows what these lands looked like before Permaculture and how they look a year later and even 15 years later. The Permaculture design of the land is built on such a strong foundation that the land’s value increases 400% and supports the local community in every way. You’ll hear interviews with some of the local people explaining how a drought year negatively affects all the land around the acreage not designed by Permaculture while the Permaculture acres are fruitful.
USING PERMACULTURE PRINCIPLES YOU CAN INCREASE SOIL
FERTILITY AND TURN A DESERT INTO A LUSH FOOD FOREST usable and hydrate soil so that just about any crop will grow on its own. Designing the Land is a Big Key One of the most important concepts of Permaculture is to design the land — and the land could be anywhere from an eighth of an acre or a rooftop for crop production to hundreds of acres of land that appear to have no ability to be productive. Using Permaculture principles you can increase soil
How One Organic Farm is As Bad as Commercial Farms Permaculture does not involve raping the soil of its nutrients, overgrazing it, or adding chemicals and pesticides to it. But what many don’t understand is that Permaculture goes far beyond organic
HEALTH-WELLNESS & NUTRITION
GARDENING THIS YEAR? BETTER CHECK INTO PERMACULTURE
These three grievous mistakes of farming make organic farming no better than commercial farming in the long run. The only plus of the organic farm is that the foods produced have no added pesticides or chemicals. In time, the land of this large organic farm will be similar to what happens with conventional farms — the soil is depleted. And since all life begins in the soil, you’re left with nothing at all. The vegetables and fruits may originally have had a higher mineral content than store-bought commercial produce, but with each passing year, the nutritional quality dwindles more and more. Permaculture builds nutrients into the soil and into the plants themselves. It builds soil with each passing year. It restores water hydration to the soil. Food grown on Permaculture-designed land tastes good because it has a high nutrient content and has a high energetic value. It’s food the way food was designed to be from the beginning of time. If you are gardening this year, go to Youtube and search for videos with Geoff Lawton and Permaculture in the search box. Learn everything you can and begin creating your own Permaculture no matter where you live. It is possible. Go to Geoff Lawton’s website, www.GeoffLawton.com and sign up to view his videos. Change your whole paradigm of gardening with Permaculture and you’ll become part of a massive effort to restore the land worldwide. H&F MARCH/APRIL

WHAT IS SPIRULINA? By J. Renee
E
veryday there is something new on the market about a pill that helps with weight loss or a multi-vitamin to fight off aging. It’s almost as if we are forgetting that our bodies are organic. They are made of the same materials that makes trees, plants and other animals around us. Why not support it with some of the same elements? You cannot give a construction worker feathers and expect him to create a sturdy brick building. So why would you give your system junk food and expect it to build a resilient healthy body? It needs to be fortified with something it is familiar with, something it can actually use: nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. This is why Spirulina is such a phenomenon. It has all of these in it naturally. Here is the good, the bad and the super good on Spirulina.
The Good About Spirulina
Spirulina is simply a form of algae. It is related to that green stuff that grows inside your fish tank when it is not cleaned. The good thing about Spirulina is that consuming it will tip the health scales in your favor. Spirulina has more protein than meat and soy beans if you ate the same amount that the food charts use – 100 grams. The problem is that it’s impossible to eat that much of Spirulina. Protein contains amino acids, which the body uses to keep functioning. They tricky part is that our body cannot make some of the amino acids on its own. They only way to get it is by eating the right foods that contain the amino acids in great enough amounts so your body can make protein.
The Bad Thing About Spirulina
21 YEARS
WORKER FEATHERS AND EXPECT HIM
Spirulina has no real negative side effects, but there are some cautions to pay attention to. As mentioned before, Spirulina is in the algae family. It flourishes best in salt water, fresh water, and even natural springs. While this sounds like a bonus, be aware that the more natural the body of water, the higher the chance that Spirulina will be contaminated. For this reason Spirulina that is produced in a controlled setting is a better choice. Research your brand choices before consuming this new product.
TO CREATE A STURDY BRICK BUILDING. SO WHY WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR SYSTEM JUNK FOOD AND EXPECT IT TO BUILD A RESILIENT HEALTHY BODY?
Spirulina also contains a high amount of iodine, so people who are sensitive to iodine should refrain from consuming it. Spirulina also has a tendency to boost the immune system. This can cause conflict if
Spirulina is also easy to digest. This means once you consume it, your body does not have to spend a lot of time breaking it down before it can be used. 24 CELEBRATING

someone is taking medication for suppressing the immune system. Always consult your nutritionist before adding this supplement to your daily diet.
The Super Good About Spirulina
The list of benefits one can get from Spirulina is unbelievable. Among those benefits is the improvement of eye health. The age old recommendation of eating carrots is now over shadowed by Spirulina. Ten times more vitamin A is found in Spirulina than in carrots.. Spirulina is jam packed with chlorophyll, which is the same thing that gives broccoli, lettuce and cucumbers their green color. Chlorophyll is a key for cleaning the blood. It helps rebuild the red blood cells, removes toxins from the blood, and increases the number of white blood cells. Blood sustains our life force, heals our cuts and revitalizes our organs. It now makes even more sense to sing Spirulina’s praises.
How to Take Spirulina
Spirulina can be taken in capsule form or powder form. Capsules are a good option for people who are always on the go but want to make sure they get their daily dose of Spirulina. However, if you have a little more time on your hands, try the powder form. Grab your favorite smoothie or juicing recipe. Prepare it like normal. Next stir in the recommended serving of Spirulina to add its super properties, to an already super you. H&F

ecently one of the guys at work was complaining about what he perceived to be a prevalent ignorance of the rules governing the use of the American River Parkway. Yup, there are rules that are expected to be obeyed and mores that are just expected. What are the differences? Well, there is no ambiguity about the rules, but etiquette is more nebulous. A general agreement that only works when most of us understand what it is exactly what it is we are agreeing upon. What? Exactly! For me, when in doubt, smile, apologize and ride on. But the rules? What about those stinkin’ rules? Well, despite my shop mate’s indignant dismay regarding other rule breakers on the bike trail, he always becomes strangely silent when I inquire as to how fast he rides the trail himself. Generally, he ends the conversation. But for the rest of us sinister rule breakers, a refresher of those rules cannot be anything but beneficial. And thanks to the Sacramento County Regional Park website, those rules I will now make available to all. The site is also an excellent resource for anyone wishing to utilize the 15,000 acres of park available in Sacramento County. But allow me to summarize those rules, and of course salt them with my own opinions and observations. 1. It should be noted that those walking and/ or jogging the trail should try, whenever possible, to use the dirt shoulder. It will minimize accidental contact with any errant cyclists. If in a group of two or more, the single file principle should be practiced. Having jogged some of the trail myself, I find the hard pack nature of the shoulder easy on my body. The

5. Stay in your lane. It seems like this would be a no brainer, but I know personally how the mind can wander, and how readily a bike wanders with it. Stay focused and keep the head phones off. Another no-no. 6. Yes, the speed limit really is 15 miles per hour. 7. Like our brethren the joggers and walkers, ride single file if in groups of two or more. 8. No, you cannot ride on the equestrian trails or vice versa. No off-road riding. shoulder provides a sense of security that will be appreciated. 2. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but are not allowed to be unleashed at any time. They must also be on a leash of no more than six feet, probably not a bad idea.
9. I consider it madness to ride in the dark without lights, but thankfully it happens to also be illegal on the bike trail. For more information, see www.regionalparks.saccounty.net H&F
For the cyclist the list is a little bit longer: 3. Helmets are mandatory for children under 18 years of age. Parents may want to give grave and careful consideration using the bike trail as an area to teach their children the fine art of cycling. The bike trail is heavily trafficked and care should be taken when accompanying children. MARCH/APRIL

After reading this article, your game will easily improve within minutes with these 5 simple tips. You’ve already done the hardest part, which is getting on the court to play. Tip #1. Keep your feet moving. This is essential because you will be ready for your opponent’s next shot. If you are ready, and ready to move, you will get to the ball faster; then the chance of hitting a better shot greatly increases. Tip #2. Keep your racket up. Again, this has to do with awareness and preparedness. If your racket is not up when your opponent is hitting a shot, you have to bring your racket up and then swing which takes more time, compared to just moving to the right or left with your racket already up to hit your forehand or backhand.
Tip #3. Always be alert. This means you always have to focus on your next shot, which means plan out where you’re going to hit the ball, and how much spin and height. Basically, construct the point in your head; don’t just hit balls around with no purpose. If you are not focusing, this means you are not trying hard enough, and you are not living up to your full potential. Tip #4. Keep your eyes on the ball. Keep your eyes there until it hits your strings and you see it land on the other side. Then if you mess up, you can at least see how you messed up, by looking at the ball. You can also predict where the ball will go. This is crucial for your success, because you can try to see if it has spin on it, how far it will go, and how high. If it was a loopy topspin shot with heavy spin on it, you might step back or move forward to take it as a volley. If it is a slice, you might want to step forward.
Tip #5. Learn your strengths and weaknesses. This is one of the most important tips because then you can force your opponent to surrender to your strength without letting them manipulate your weaknesses. Also you might want to practice your weaknesses, to make them better. For example, one strength might be your forehand, while a weakness might be your backhand. These five tips can benefit your game greatly, as well as your fitness, agility, movement, and above all, make you into a better tennis player. With them, you’ll be playing better tennis in no time at all! Ethan Zhang is 11 years old and formally started playing tennis two years ago at a tennis club in Stamford, Connecticut. His goal is to share his knowledge of tennis with anyone, no matter what gender or age. H&F
10 WAYS UBIQUINOL CoQ10 CAN IMPROVE YOUR OVERALL HEALTH By Jennifer J. Harrison
U
biquinol CoQ10 can impact health in many areas of the body due to its unique function in the cells. This more absorbable form of CoQ10 is rapidly becoming a popular recommendation of physicians and nutritionists. Here are 10 ways this unique nutrient can improve your overall health: 1. Increases energy at the cellular level. Ubiquinol CoQ10 acts like a spark plug to energize the mitochondria in the body’s cells. It is found in high energy organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver. 2. Slows down aging. Especially after 40 years of age, the body’s supply of Ubiquinol decreases. Foods rich in meat and fish contain large amounts of CoQ10 but as the body ages, its ability to convert it decreases. Even with supplements there can be an inability to convert conventional CoQ10 into Ubiquinol. By supplementing with Ubiquinol, the aging process may be dramatically slowed. 3. Increases immunity. Because of its effect on the immune system, there will be fewer colds and less influenza. More serious illnesses are warded off because of a stronger immune system.

4. Restores alertness to the mind. Because every cell in the body is impacted by this chemical, the brain responds well to supplementation with Ubiquinol CoQ10. Studies have shown 56% increase in cellular energy production in the brain. 5. Contributes to more energy. Studies and testimonies from users agree this type of supplementation dramatically increases overall energy in the body. Users report feeling like they are 20 or 30 years younger. 6. Promotes better heart health. When conventional CoQ10 was introduced over 50 years ago, doctors began recommending it for healthy hearts. Since the heart is the most active organ in the body, supplementation worked well for heart care. CoQ10 became known for decades as a heart supplement. Ubiquinol CoQ10 works even better. 7. Promotes better lung function. Lungs are very active organs as well and require large amounts of Ubiquinol CoQ10 to function properly. Users of supplements find their breathing greatly improved.

8. Potent antioxidant activity. Antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E help keep the body’s immune system strong so it can fight the onslaught of germs and viruses. Many health professionals believe that a natural antioxidant is as important as these 2 common vitamins, or more so. Antioxidants guard against the free radicals that negatively impact health. 9. Increases metabolism. This aids in weight loss and restoration of normal functions in the body. Vigorous exercise reduces levels of Ubiquinol CoQ10 in the body, so it is important to supplement in any weight loss or exercise program. 10. Bioavailability. Because Ubiquinol CoQ10 is 8 times more bioavailable than conventional CoQ10, smaller doses are more than adequate. Recommended dosage of the original form can be as high as 200 mg a day. By using the metabolite of the original, a user can take lower doses, thereby saving money. Therefore, instead of 200 mg a day, only 25mg is needed of Ubiquinol. Because of the bioavailability of Ubiquinol CoQ10 more of the nutrient easily makes its way to cells in the body that need it most, like the heart and lungs. H&F

uttermilk, butter on toast, and buttered popcorn are all foods we fit into our American ways. Can you add Buttered coffee to that list? Yep, that is the latest trend coming to a morning routine near you. Buttered coffee, or Bulletproof Coffee as some are calling it, could possibly be the most recent magic potion that offers all sorts of health benefits. However because this trend is so new, researchers have some good and bad things to say about it. If you are interested in sipping on this, here is some information to help you decide if it is for you.
What Does Buttered Coffee Do For You?
The term Bulletproof Coffee came from a man named Dave Asprey, an entrepreneur from Silicon Valley. He was introduced to the concept of buttered coffee when he travelled to Tibet and partook of their traditional yak-butter tea. Now the claims say this Bulletproof Coffee improves mental clarity. Helps you stay energetic over a long period of time without all the jitters and the caffeine crash. It is also said to reduce hunger pangs, and promotes healthy weight loss by turning your body into a fat-burning machine.
medium, and short chain fatty acids. Out of these three, the MCT is said to be the one our bodies absorbs the most easily, not using a lot of energy getting the MCT into the body. MCT also helps your body burn excessive fat. Sources of MCT are coconut oil and palm kernel oil which can be found at any health food store.
Is Butter Good or Bad?
Research from years ago said butter was high in cholesterol and saturated fats, which contributed to obesity if eaten In excess. More recent research says butter can gain health points for having an abundance of fat-soluble vitamins like A, E and K2. Vitamin K2 is the wonder nutrient that helps clean gunk off artery walls. When compared to margarine, butter wins hands down as being more heart healthy.
Buttered Coffee
Now look at this buttered coffee idea again. There are good things to say about each individual ingredient of the buttered coffee. But as a health beverage, we do not know yet. We often rely on researchers and experts to tell us what to eat and not eat, how much to eat, and when to eat. We have become overly obsessed with food consumption that we do not realize obsession in any form is unhealthy in itself. Do your own research and you will more than likely find a plethora of case studies and scientific papers that support the good and bad views on buttered coffee.
The ingredients for this coffee are pretty simple: hot coffee, two tablespoons of butter, and a tablespoon of MCT oil.
If you want to try buttered coffee, then do it. Pay attention to how it makes you feel. Do you feel more energetic? Does it keep hunger pangs under control? Are you more mentally focused? Or is it just another band wagon to hop on and ride until the next one comes along.
MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride oil. There are long,

DOG HEALTH: SIGNS OF EMERGENCY PROBLEMS By Colleen Gray
O
ur dog’s health is important to us. When we suspect our dog is ill, we want to do the right thing. Unfortunately, distinguishing between a minor illness and health problems that need emergency attention is not always easy. Here are some important guidelines to learn how to identify serious dog health problems.
of as quickly as possible. Shock can also pose a threat to your dog’s health. To prevent shock, wrap your dog in a blanket. Stay away from your dog’s mouth. Dogs in pain may bite, even if your dog is sweet.
Where to Take Your Dog in An Emergency
Convulsions
If your dog falls seriously ill, time wasted locating emergency services can be fatal. Know in advance where to go. Many veterinarians offer 24-hour emergency services. Find out if this includes your vet. If not, where is your nearest veterinary emergency hospital? Is it An Emergency?
Most veterinarians will advise you not to take a chance but call the nearest emergency veterinary service if you suspect that your dog’s health needs immediate attention. Knowledgeable staff will assess the situation and advise you. Here are some of the most common dog health emergencies: Severe Stomach Pain
Signs include an abdomen tender to touch, standing with the back arched, and refusing food. Take your dog to the nearest emergency veterinary service immediately if you see these signs. Abdominal pain can be (and often is) a sign of a serious health problem. Other signs of abdominal distress include vomiting, whelping, shakiness and breathing difficulties. Dogs may suffer from gastric torsion. Gastric torsion develops suddenly and rapidly and tends to affect large, heavily-chested dogs most often. This condition needs immediate attention. 32 CELEBRATING

Abdominal distress may also be a sign of bloat, constipation, kidney or liver disease, urinary stones, poisoning, an intestinal obstruction or a simple tummy ache. Err on the side of caution. A visit to the emergency veterinarian is advised to safeguard your dog’s health and give you peace of mind. Heavy Bleeding
A laceration that results in heavy bleeding must be dealt with immediately. Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean, dry bandage. Bleeding should stop within ten minutes. With the bleeding controlled, get your dog to the vet as quickly as possible. With dogs, there is only a small window of time for stitching a wound. If the bleeding does not stop within 20 minutes, or if your dog is bleeding from the chest take your dog to the emergency clinic immediately. Fractured Bones If your dog has had an accident and possibly broken bones, the first step is to call your regular vet. If they are
WWW.HEALTHFITNESS.US
unable to see your dog soon, take your dog to the emergency clinic. X-rays will determine whether or not your dog has broken bones. Do not try to clean or straighten the wound. If you have a small dog, use pencils or pens as a splint. For larger dogs, use rolled magazines or newspapers. Place them on either side of the bone, then roll cloth or adhesive tape progressively up the splint material. While traveling to the vet, touch your pooch’s toes every few minutes to be sure circulation is normal. If they get too cold, rewrap the splint material more loosely. Difficulty Breathing
If your dog develops breathing difficulties, don’t hesitate; get to the closest emergency hospital immediately. Breathing problems are a sign of several health problems, many of them serious. Vehicle Accidents
When a dog is hit by a car, take him to the closest emergency clinic immediately to rule out internal injuries that need to be taken care
Any seizure is a problem. Call your veterinarian at once. If convulsions last for more than a few minutes, place a blanket over your dog, keep away from his mouth and take him to the nearest emergency service immediately. Seizures are a sign of serious health problems including epilepsy, metabolic problems, brain tumors, and poisoning. Seizures themselves can be life threatening. Whenever you are seriously concerned about your dog’s health, don’t hesitate to seek immediate veterinary advice. You know your dog well enough to know when something is seriously amiss. And you love your dog well enough not to take chances. Remember, veterinarians love animals too, and understand your concern. Calling emergency services first will give clinic staff an opportunity to assess the situation and, if necessary, ensure that a medical team is prepared for your arrival. TOP 6 THINGS TO PREVENT YOUR DOG FROM GETTING CANCER, PART 1 By Dr. Andrew Jones, DVM

typically red and raised from the skin. They can spread to regional lymph nodes, and in some cases to other organs. Mast cell tumors can be present wherever mast cells exist in the body (spleen, liver, lungs, etc.) They are similarly graded as with Lymphomas (Grade 1 – local growing; to Grade 5 – where the tumor cells have spread throughout the body).
ancer, or neoplasia is one of the most feared diseases and diagnoses among dog owners; unfortunately the incidence is on the rise, leaving pet owners with many questions about why this is happening, and what they can do to prevent it.
In this article you will learn about the current cancer statistics in dogs, including which breeds are at highest risk. The exact definition of cancer is explained, then the most common types of dog cancer; lymphosarcoma, mast cell tumors, osteosarcoma, and hemangiosarcoma. Lastly the top 6 things you can do now to prevent your dog from getting cancer in the first place are discussed in this 2-part series. Cancer is now the #1 cause of death in dogs. The National Cancer Institute has published figures reporting more than 27 million dogs in the Unites States will be diagnosed with cancer each year. Of dogs over the age of 10, over 50% will now die of cancer, an estimated 14 million. Golden Retrievers have the highest incidence of cancer amongst all dog breeds. The breed’s average lifespan is now down to 10-1/2 years, and 60% of Golden Retrievers will die of cancer. Other breeds at increased risk include Boxers, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Boston Terriers, Irish Setter, Cocker Spaniels, and English Bulldogs. The definition of cancer is of abnormal cells which divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymphatic systems. Cells grow and divide in a controlled way
to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells. However, sometimes this process goes wrong; there are mutations in which cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. These extra cells may form a mass of tissue called cancer or a tumor. There are more than 100 different types of cancer, and the cancers are named for either the organ they affect, or the type of cell which they start in. Lymphoma is cancer of the lymph cells (lymphocytes), and lymphoid tissues. Lymphoid tissue is found in lymph nodes, spleen, liver, intestinal tract and bone marrow. The type of lymphoma depends upon where the cancer originates: it may be the skin form, intestinal form, or generalized and spread throughout the lymph nodes (called multicentric). Signs for you to watch for include a firm lump that grows and won’t go away. Some pets have an increased appetite but continue to lose weight. Others have problems breathing and may show overall weakness if they are becoming anemic. Mast cell tumor signs for you to watch for include a firm lump that grows and won’t go away. Most common mast cell tumors are abnormal skin growths. They are
Osteosarcoma is also known as Bone Cancer, common in medium to large breed dogs. The bones of the legs are most commonly affected. Most dogs first intermittently limp, then progressively limp more often as the tumor grows from the inside of the bone out. At that point you may see a swelling at the end of the bone, and it is firm and painful to touch.
The exact cause of cancer is unknown, but environment also plays a big role with exposure to smog, herbicides, and insecticides being contributing factors. Vaccines have been implicated, along with food; preservatives and other chemical additives may also contribute to causing cancer. Clearly there is also a genetic component as we are seeing increased incidence within certain breeds, and some breeds now have a shorter lifespan due to cancer. Dr Andrew Jones is the author of a Free Ebook, Dog Health Secrets, which gives you over 100 safe, natural and effective at home remedies to solve your dog’s health problems quickly and easily at home. He reveals what Vaccines to AVOID and what to give, The BEST food to feed, plus HOW to save money on veterinary fees. Your FREE DOG HEALTH SECRETS BOOK is at www.theinternetpetvet.com H&F

LACK OF MAGNESIUM CAN CAUSE MAJOR HEALTH ISSUES By Rich Carroll
O
ne of the most important minerals that our body needs is magnesium. It is used by every organ in the body, and specifically the heart and kidneys must have it to function normally. But although it is known that magnesium as a mineral for the heart and bones, fairly recent research has found that it plays a much greater role in health. Among these roles is detoxification and muscle physiology; and you may know this if you experience muscle spasms often caused by magnesium deficiency. As important as this mineral is to us, it is not easy to detect if we have a deficiency, and there are estimates that say that 80% of Americans are not getting enough. The blood test alone will not reveal magnesium deficiency, as only about 1% of our total magnesium levels are in the blood. So how do we take sure we are getting enough magnesium?

such as magnesium from being absorbed into the system. So even if we do consume foods that are magnesium-rich, they might be blocked by these chelators. Magnesium can also be effectively eliminated from foods by the way they are cooked or processed. Other foods can inhibit magnesium absorption. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or eating a lot of sugar can cause the body to pass magnesium through the system before it is absorbed. Also elderly people, especially those that take medications, can have problems with absorption. Supplements aren’t always the answer. Many people look to supplements as the answer to a mineral-deficient diet, but not all supplements are absorbed the same way as vitamins and minerals from natural food. Plus there is the issue of the synergistic relationships with other vitamins, specifically vitamin K2 and D3. When you supplement you shall know exactly the reasons you’re using one, and keep them to a minimum. There must be a good balance between calcium and magnesium. When you get muscles cramps, they could be due to an imbalance of calcium and not enough magnesium. It is important especially when you exercise to not only drink plenty of water but to keep in mind your calcium, magnesium and potassium ratios. Otherwise you will likely have cramping issues.
