What are You Not Doing To Reverse Diabetes? Preventing Mosquito Borne Diseases in Your Horse By Stephanie Suesan Smith, Ph.D.
U
nless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard about West Nile Virus and know it is a threat to your horse. How then, do you protect your horse from this and other mosquito borne illnesses?
are open should have screens to keep the mosquitoes out of the stable. Outdoor lighting should be far enough from the stable that it does not attract mosquitoes. Finally, the use of repellents designed for horses is important. Do not use repellents designed for humans, as these may make your horse ill.
By reducing mosquitoes around your stable, helping your horse avoid the ones that remain, and vaccinating your horse against the illnesses common in your area. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there are four types of encephalitis that strike horses in the United States and Canada. These are: 1) Eastern Equine Encephalitis 2) Western Equine Encephalitis 3) Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis 4) West Nile Virus All four strains have similar symptoms. Most horses that contract them have a mild flu-like illness. Some horses have fever, headache, and a sore throat. The most severely affected horses have a sudden fever and headache followed by convulsions, coma, and even death. According to the Texas Animal Health Commission, even horses that survive the severe version of these illnesses are usually brain damaged and unfit to ride. Because all these diseases are caused by viruses, there is no medical treatment for them. Supportive care, such as fluids, rest, support when the horse cannot stand, and love are the only options currently available. This makes prevention of prime importance. Prevention can be broken down into three areas: reducing the source, avoiding the source, and vaccination. Since these diseases are spread by mosquitoes, it is important to make sure there is nowhere for the mosquito to breed around your horse. Without water, there can be no mosquitoes. Empty all containers holding water except for the water your horse drinks. Wash out water troughs or buckets on a weekly basis. Mosquito fish, Gambusiaaffinis, can be added to your horse’s trough to eat the mosquito larvae if they are legal in your
location. Mosquito dunks, which contain Bacillus thuringiensisisraelensis, can be put in water troughs or buckets to kill the mosquito larvae without hurting your horse. All of the common mosquito-borne illnesses, but especially West Nile Virus, normally live in birds. Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis lives in chipmunks or squirrels, but it is rarely found in the United States so far. Mosquitoes only bite horses when their primary host is not available when they need a meal. For that reason, discourage birds, especially crows and grackles, from nesting near your stable. For some reasons, crows are especially susceptible to West Nile Virus and mosquitoes that bite them can spread it to your horse. Do not allow rodents such as squirrels or chipmunks to feed on the grain that the horse wastes. Try to keep wild animals and birds at a distance from your horse’s living quarters. Avoidance consists of keeping the horse in the stable at night, dawn, and dusk when the mosquitoes are most active. All windows and doors that
There are vaccinations for all of the equine encephalitis strains found in the United States and Canada. For West Nile Virus, two doses are given 30 days apart. The vaccination program should start approximately 3-6 weeks before the start of the mosquito season in your location. There are two vaccinations available. West Nile Innovator, made by Fort Dodge, has been shown in the lab to be 95% effective. It consists of killed components of the virus that trick the horse’s immune system into producing antibodies against the virus. Recombitek Equine West Nile Virus Vaccine is a modified live virus vaccine. It uses the canary pox virus to carry proteins from the West Nile Virus and that causes the horse’s immune system to make antibodies. Each year, the horse should be given a booster of the same kind of vaccine the horse originally received to make sure it stays healthy. Vaccinations for Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis are given in a similar fashion to the West Nile Virus vaccine. Your veterinarian will tell you which types of encephalitis are prevalent in your area and will administer the vaccinations for that type. Two vaccinations are required for each virus the first year, but there are products that contain vaccinations for all three of these encephalitis viruses. Consult your veterinarian to make sure your horse is properly vaccinated. Follow the principles of reducing mosquitoes, avoiding mosquitoes, and vaccinating your horse to prevent mosquito borne illnesses. Such illnesses can prove deadly, making prevention essential. Mosquito Fish Fact Sheet By Steve Challis
T
he Mosquito Fish is a name used for several species of Gambusia, including Gambusia affinis and Gambusia holbrooki. The name of the genus Gambusia comes from a Portuguese word, gambusino, which means useless. Until the 1900’s these fish were called Top Minnows, and then their name was changed. They are now found in every continent except Antarctica. Mosquito Fish were introduced to many areas because they were believed to be good at controlling mosquito larvae (wrigglers). In fact, most fish eat mosquito larvae readily and it is often difficult to find any larvae in water containing any sort of fish. When I was in Mindanao in the Philippines, I was surprised that there were so few mosquitoes. I tried looking for wrigglers. Instead I found at first that every little body of water, or even of mud had fish in. Then I started to wonder where the mosquitoes were breeding. I looked some more and found wrigglers in the top of each fence post. The fence posts were made of thick bamboo and each one had a small area on the top with water in and that’s where the mosquitoes were breeding.

Recent research has shown that Mosquito Fish normally only eat about 5% of their diet as mosquito larvae while many fish eat more like 20%.If Mosquito Fish have too high a percentage of their food as wrigglers, they have trouble reproducing. Rather than reducing the number of wrigglers, in many areas the Mosquito Fish have greatly reduced the number of native fish, which are more effective than them in controlling mosquitoes. The large scale introduction of Mosquito Fish into other areas has failed to control mosquitoes, but has done enormous damage to the ecosystems in these areas. The attitude of people now to the Mosquito Fish in Australia is quite different from that in the Untied States. In some areas of the United States, Mosquito Fish are still distributed free of charge. In the areas that they were native to, this can sometimes make sense, but to do this in California where they were introduced in about 1920, and where they are threatening native animals like the California Newt is strange. However, some of the authorities in the United States are starting to take notice of the danger of introducing this fish to their waterways, and the
Mosquito Fish is restricted in some areas of the United States. Why were Mosquito Fish used For Mosquito Control? One reason was their name. It was assumed that they must be good at controlling Mosquitoes. If you watch them you will certainly see them eating some wrigglers. Another reason was convenience. They can take an amazing range of conditions. They can withstand temperatures from 33 degrees F (1 degree C) to 100 degrees F (38 degrees C), salinities possibly up to twice that of sea water, are very easy to breed, and do not require any local research into native species. Although it was easy to use Mosquito Fish, it does not mean they were the best choice. In Australia and in several other places of the world it is being recognized that using fish native to the area is better than using Mosquito Fish. In the United States in areas that the Mosquito Fish are not native to, a fish native to the particular area would be more appropriate. Dentists Introduce the Importance of Healthy Gums With Use of a Water Jet By Wayne A.Y. Gin

’m a dentist that practices minimal-invasive dentistry. I’m always looking for ways to help my patients to care for their mouth so that when they do see me for regular check-ups, the treatment needed will be minimal. Big Problem: Will You Do What Needs to Be Done? The difficulty dentists have with their patients is compliance. I find the best way to help this is to get the patients involved in their own oral health. That begins by informing them of their current dental status and then educating them on how to improve it. The motivation is the prevention of further treatment or the “avoiding pain” syndrome.

Dental Care Starts With Your Gums The cornerstone of all dentistry must begin with healthy gums; otherwise any restorative work undertaken will fail or even be impossible to do. If the gums bleed readily due to gum disease, it is very difficult to keep the tooth being restored isolated to place an effective restoration. So gum treatment must ideally begin immediately to arrest any further destruction of gum and or bone loss around the teeth. Most people brush well but unless they use dental floss or some other means of cleaning in between their teeth then caries and gum disease is more than likely to be apparent. Brushing alone leaves two tooth surfaces untouched and therefore unclean. Often, we want things easy in life as we all have busy lives doing what we need to do on a daily basis. between teeth. There are those who are not able to use floss as they have lost the dexterity in their fingers or have trouble with gagging when reaching too near the back of the mouth. Inter dental brushes work well with large gaps between teeth. The use of wood sticks, if used
carefully, also works but you have to avoid poking the gums. The Water Pik vs Floss – Impressive Results The method of choice for nearly all my patients is the use of the water jet or water pik. Water jets are very effective in removing plaque from around the necks of teeth. They flush food debris and plaque from below the gum line and are much more effective than the use of floss. The fine tips that come with the water jet are especially very good for those patients with partially erupted lower third molar teeth (wisdom teeth) where it gets right back and cleans under the gum. A study in 2005 by Barnes CM et al, showed that the use of the water jet gave quite impressive results in reducing bleeding (up to 93%) and gingivitis (up to 52%) compared to the use of floss. Another study in 2009 by Gorur A et al, has shown that a 3-second pulsation with a water jet was highly effective in the removal of plaque biofilm from tooth surfaces, an amazing 99.9%. Therefore I advocate the use of the water jet to all my patients. It is my responsibility to help them understand the importance of a daily regime they can easily use, follow and sustain and thereby reduce the need for physical intervention in treatment. By Riley Daye I love salads for meals, especially in the summer. The problem is being a mid-western meat and potatoes guy I get bored with salads really fast! I decided to start experimenting a bit looking for the best salad recipes and came across a Strawberry Avocado Salad Recipe that I love! We all love strawberries for their sweetness and aroma that just seem to scream “summertime,” but they have some great nutritional value as well. Strawberries are a rich source of vitamin-c and other antioxidants, which we all know are important to good health. Antioxidants are the scavengers of the body that help combat free radicals. While some people may prefer other berries, I haven’t known anyone who doesn’t love avocado! Here in Southern California you can virtually walk around any neighborhood and see avocado trees growing in neighbor’s yards! Avocados provide your body with the healthy fats it needs, and similar
to olive oil, they can boost levels of HDL or good cholesterol. They also happen to be a great source of powerful anti-inflammatory nutrients including carotenoids.
About 10 fresh strawberries sliced
Here’s an easy to make Strawberry Avocado Salad Recipe... hopefully it will become one of your best salad recipes too!
Toss the salad ingredients together in a bowl and top with dressing. A little crumble of feta cheese is great on top as well. This recipe makes about 2 servings. It also holds up well if made in advance as the lemon juice in the dressing keeps the avocados from turning brown. The best salad recipes don’t have to be complicated!
½ cup Almonds or raw nuts of your choice.
You’ll need to grab a couple staples from your pantry first. I like really simple dressings to as not to distract from the fruits and vegetables. For the dressing you’ll need: 1 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons white sugar 2 tablespoons olive oil 3-4 teaspoons honey Directions Mix or whisk these together and set aside. Like all my healthy recipes, I also like to make them as simple as possible, so I like to mix up my dressings in a tiny 1 cup Ziploc or
Tupperware bowl. Then I just pop the lid on and shake together. If you have any leftover it’s easy to store and saves on doing extra dishes. For the salad: Grab about 2 cups of mixed greens 1 avocado, peeled, pitted and sliced into cubes

inding a chicken wings recipes is pretty easy these days. Want to know why? First of all, chicken wings and their popularity have had a fairly short history, but what a history! You’ve heard of the famous Buffalo Chicken Wings, right? Who doesn’t love them? Let me tell you a little bit about the history of the famous New York Buffalo Wings and the chicken wings recipes that resulted. There’s a bit of a argument going on about the origin of the hot chicken wings appetizer, but I choose to believe this story, having tasted this recipe - it’s just gotta be true! Here’s the story: Most people believe that the first Buffalo Wings appetizer was created in the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York on October 30, 1964. This easy appetizer recipe came about because of some hungry young men and the quick thinking of a restaurant owner.

The story is told that the owner, Teressa Bellisimo had to be creative when her son and his friends came into the restaurant late one night and proclaimed to be very hungry (“Feed us, Mom!” - sound familiar?). Thinking fast on her feet, Teressa had an excess of chicken wings on hand and with a moment’s inspiration, decided to fry them up and smother them in a spicy chili sauce she had created. Still “winging it”, she realized that the hot sauce on the chicken wings might be a little too hot, so she quickly put some blue cheese dip into a bowl and had the boys dip the fried wings in it to cut the heat. Then she added some cut up celery sticks for dipping into the blue cheese. Needless to say, the snack was an instant hit. The boys gobbled up the chicken wings recipe that Teressa had brilliantly come up with on a moment’s notice. How smart was Teressa? And who would have thought that quick thinking to feed some hungry young men could have started a culture that continues today? Since Anchor Bar’s chicken wings recipes put Buffalo, New York on the map, the city of Buffalo decided to designate July 29 as “Chicken Wing Day”. Now, amazingly (or maybe not so amazing!) the Anchor Bar serves up more 8 CELEBRATING

Here is the original Buffalo Chicken Wings recipe: What you’ll need: - 4 to 5 pounds chicken wings - Freshly ground black pepper - Salt (if desired) - 4 cups vegetable oil - 4 Tablespoon butter (1/2 stick) - 5 Tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce - 1 Tablespoon white wine vinegar - Blue cheese dressing or dip celery sticks (cut up for dipping) First, chop off the tip of each chicken wing, and discard it. Chop the wing in half (cutting at the joint) to make 2 pieces. Next, grind and sprinkle on fresh black pepper and salt if desired. Heat the oil over high heat in a deep skillet or deep-fat fryer until it starts to pop and sizzle (usually around 400 degrees F). Then add half the chicken wings and cook until they’re golden crisp, stirring or shaking occasionally. When the wings are done, remove them to drain on some paper towels while cooking the remaining wings. Last thing to do is, melt the butter or margarine over medium heat in a heavy saucepan, and add the hot sauce and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Stir well and remove from the flame immediately. All that’s required now is to place the chicken on a warm serving platter, pour your favorite hot sauce on top, and serve. To make the wings as spicy as you like, just pick an appropriate hot sauce to match the heat you are looking for. This recipe makes about 8 to 10 servings and is traditionally served with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks. I
read an article in the Journal of Medical Ethics entitled, “A proposal to classify happiness as a psychiatric disorder.” The author’s hypothesis was that happiness is an abnormality, and should be classified as a disease similar to schizophrenia. Now the author was not saying that happiness is as damaging to the individual as a major psychological disorder. He proposed that happiness be classified as a “major affective disorder, pleasant type.” In other words, it may be a disorder, but it is not recognized as displaying any negatively valued symptoms. The author posited this hypothesis: “... Happiness is statistically abnormal, consists of a discrete cluster of symptoms, is associated with a range of cognitive abnormalities, and probably reflects the abnormal functioning of the central nervous system... “ What does all this mean? I guess most of us are not happy. In determining whether or not happiness is a disorder, the author discusses accepted means for determining abnormalities that are disruptive to the individual. He talks about happiness being identified as a disease. An identified psychological disease will demonstrate clusters of symptoms that psychologists look for in an individual’s behavior. He explores biological reasons and the possible disruption of the central nervous system as a cause of happiness. Some type of
stimulation produces happiness or euphoria. However, this biological cause produces a disadvantage for the individual. For example, happiness has been linked to obesity, alcohol consumption, impulsive behavior, manic behavior followed by depression. Any of these “disadvantages” could possibly lead to a shortened life. Another possibility is that the behaviors that result from happiness are irrational. He says, “... irrational if it is bizarre and socially unacceptable, reduces the individual’s expected utilities, or is not grounded on good reasons.” But what is irrational behavior? Does any of this convince you that happiness is a psychological disorder similar to schizophrenia and a statistical abnormality for humans? What if fallen mankind is incapable of experiencing happiness? What if happiness is an illusion? Some questions to ponder: Is happiness temporary? Can it be happiness if it isn’t permanent? Can we be happy one moment and unhappy the next? Is that true happiness? If so, then our happiness depends on something that causes the feeling of happiness. Is happiness having something we desire, from being healthy or having a good job or being content with life? What happens when we don’t get our way, we aren’t content with life, or our health declines? Are we then unhappy? If we don’t get what we want, then we must be unhappy. If so, is mankind unhappy by default? If unhappiness is the norm, then happiness, especially lasting happiness, is abnormal. If true and lasting happiness is out of reach, then happiness is a psychological disorder.
until it rests in God.” We were created to be in communion with God. Our desire from the start was to be our own God, and this broke our communion with God. Now we seek happiness on our own, but it is out of reach.
Don’t we all want to be happy? If it’s abnormal, why do we seek it? It seems reasonable to state that happiness is not the normal state of a human if we as humans must pursue it. We must not be happy people. Otherwise, happiness would be a state of normalcy. Unhappiness, on the other hand, would be a state we experience when we fall out of happiness because of some internal or external stimulus. Is seeking happiness another feeble attempt to grasp at something unattainable on our own? Like true worship, salvation, and justification, we grasp at the unattainable in a futile attempt to regain the standing our race once had. We are fallen. In our fallen state, true happiness is unattainable because happiness is not of us. Happiness is of God. As fallen creatures, we are not just people who commit an occasional sin. We have completely fallen from the grace our race once enjoyed. We can only attain a shadow of true happiness in short-lived snatches. Even this happiness is only a glimpse of true happiness. It is a little pathetic, isn’t it? But that is a good thing, because it helps to point us to true happiness, which is life in communion with God. Augustine of Hippo, a great theologian, said this, “For God has created us to him and our heart is restless

What is the Source of Your Happiness?

he best salad options for diabetics are definitely a healthy well-balanced nutritious one. The most beneficial ingredient in your salad is to choose leafy greens; these have the most nutrients that help diabetics. Another important part of your diabetic diet is to include beans and legumes, they are not only healthy and nutritious but they make a great compliment to your salads. Following are a couple of recipes that are the best salad options for diabetics: Fresh Chickpea Salad 3 finely grated carrots 1 large capsicum finely sliced 1 pound of cherry tomatoes 1 red onion finely chopped 16-ounce can of chickpeas, drained 16-ounce packet of mixed salad greens Yogurt Dressing 1 bunch of parsley 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 1 to 2 garlic cloves finely chopped 1 teaspoons of curry powder Salt to taste Black pepper to taste 1 cup plain yogurt Instructions Combine all ingredients except for salad greens in a large bowl. Add the yogurt dressing into the bowl. Toss gently until well combined. Place your salad greens onto your serving plate. Place your vegetable mixture on top and serve. The basis for all salads should include some type of leafy green like watercress, dandelion greens, arugula, and others that are in the lettuce family; the least nutritious is the iceberg lettuce. Raw vegetables are a wonderful accompaniment to all salads as well. You need to make sure that when you add a dressing to your salads that it is of nutritional benefit and does not include too much fat. Make sure that all ingredients are low in carbohydrates. The best salad options for diabetics is to include a good balance of all the different types of salads and vegetables that are available fresh and low in GI so that you can achieve optimum health.

“Winging It” with New York Buffalo Wings By Lee Griffith

ens of millions of American Bison (which we usually refer to as buffalo) were awaiting the European settlers who traveled across America’s Great Plains in the early 1800s. But among these settlers were trappers and traders, who thrived from the uncontrolled selling of meat and hides. And they weren’t the only ones killing off the American Bison. Train companies made a business out of providing tourists the chance to shoot buffalo from the windows of their coaches. These shooters slaughtered innumerable bison, only pausing to reload upon running out of ammunition. The corpses of these animals were just left out on the plain. They even had buffalo shooting contests. It is said that one person set a record by killing 120 bison in only 40 minutes. (Do the math--that’s 3 per minute!) “Buffalo” Bill Cody is reported to have killed more than 4,000 buffalo in just two years. What a great contrast this is with

how the Native Americans had conserved, for centuries, this great resource by hunting only for food and making use of the entire animal. However, there is good news. Through the responsible efforts of many Americans, the American Buffalo is coming back. When I was a boy visiting my Grandparents in South Dakota, I enjoyed driving through the plains and seeing hundreds of these majestic animals. I also remember my parents eating a buffalo dinner at the restaurant at Mount Rushmore. (I had chicken or something-the idea of eating buffalo seemed too strange to me!) What could possibly be more American than an American buffalo? Maybe an American buffalo burger! Ground buffalo meat is appearing more and more in grocery stores. Mixing butter in with the meat might seem a bit odd, but it adds a little fat, helping to bring the flavor out, and it keeps the
burger from becoming too dry, as buffalo meat is very lean. (By the way, its leanness makes buffalo meat a great choice for a healthy meal!) Ingredients: 1 lb. ground buffalo meat 3 tbsp. butter 1 egg, beaten 1 clove minced garlic 2 tbsp. finely chopped jalapeno pepper (with most of seeds and membrane removed) 2 tbsp. finely chopped green onion 1 tbsp. dried parsley flakes 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp. Lawry’s® seasoned pepper (or just ground black pepper) 4 tsp. ketchup 2 tsp. horse radish 1 tsp. yellow mustard Instructions: In a small saucepan, heat the butter just enough to melt it. In a large mixing bowl, blend well all ingredients, including the melted butter, and make into four or five patties. Cover the burgers and refrigerate for about an hour. Fire up the grill, spray grill with some PAM® (or rub some vegetable oil on it) and grill the burgers on both sides just like you would grill hamburgers--that’s it--all the seasonings are already in the burgers! Headaches became common. At times, I’d have ringing in my ears, facial flushing and even high blood pressure for no apparent reason. In the morning, I’d stagger out of bed with ears so congested I couldn’t hear a sound. I craved yogurt and felt body aches and pains without it. Don’t Think Twice – Call In the Expert The only thing new had been a neighbor moving in next door to my house yards away. What Happens With a Building Biology Environmental Consultation When Eric first comes to your house for a consultation, his goal is to minimize manmade electromagnetic radiation to biologically precautionary levels. Even our cars are electromagnetic death traps. “Studies worldwide confirm this network of dirty electricity and high electromagnetic fields is causing health problems that modern medical doctors are not currently able to diagnose.” Oscilloscopes Prove What’s Occurring In the Invisible World Eric first set up an oscilloscope that measures electrical waves, which should be in a perfect sine wave. Once you turn on all the lights in the home, the sine wave should keep its perfect formation. However, if the electrical wiring in your home is not correct to codes, the oscilloscope starts showing erratic waveforms and spikes of high voltage transients reflective of dirty electricity. In my home, the levels were safe until all the lights were turned on. Then it became evident I was living in a home that had 5 times the dirty electricity level considered safe. Eric also tested the microwave radiation in the living room as well as the magnetic field. Then we moved on to the office where I do most of my work 12 or more hours a day. The HF59B meter recorded radiation levels 20 times the Extreme Concern levels for biological safety. The reasons why were quickly identified – 1) the wireless keyboard on the computer, 2) the wireless printer, and 3) the SMART meters on the outside 3’ behind my desk. Changing to a USB keyboard and turning off the wireless printer reduced the radiation by 99.9%. However, the SMART meters on the back wall
were aiming harmful radiation right at my kidneys and right through me. No wonder why I was having kidney issues and high blood pressure! Eric reminded me that both of these health issues could be related to high electromagnetic radiation. He shielded the entire back wall with a special type of aluminum material to cut down radiation by 97%. Moving the desk to a safer location in the room is the next step.

No Microwave Oven Made the Kitchen Safer The next checkpoint was the kitchen, which was completely safe except for a toaster oven. The master bedroom was the most troublesome. The fields read high in the room. Eric uses another method to test what’s happening to someone as they sleep. Your body should be able to totally rest at night while cells restore themselves and rejuvenate. However, if there’s any voltage charge on the body at night, this won’t happen. It’s one of the main reasons why people don’t wake up rested. For this test, I mimicked the exact position during sleeping while holding a metal cable connected to a NFA1000 meter. The meter is connected to a ground wire outside. The usual voltage for health is<100 millivolts. However, my reading ended up being a whopping 1100-1200 millivolts, which is far above the Extreme Concern range. With wisdom, Eric located the two primary circuits that were putting voltage into my body. These circuits would be the ones turn off each night in order to feel peaceful and renewed once again. A complete report was emailed to me, summarizing all the findings and the best plans of action to take, all totally understandable in layman’s language. What About You? Dairy alternatives present a challenge because many dessert items include butter, milk, or cream. Alternatives for these items often use almond or soy milk, or

6. Supplement Protocols Must Be Set Up Correctly
Here are 7 facts that were presented in two medical journal reports: 1. Doctors Don’t Warn Patients of What’s To Come It’s been recognized for decades that nutritional deficiencies occur after BS. Yet, doctors often don’t even prepare patients for what’s to come. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies bring a decreased quality of life with them, along with pain and suffering sometimes beyond measure. These then lead to additional doctor visits, more medications, and greater chance for side effects from medications. This impairs digestion and absorption of iron, vitamin B12 and other nutrients carried by the protein. It also decreases the secretion of intrinsic factor, which further impairs absorption of vitamin B12. B12 supplementation may not be enough to prevent deficiency and injections are often needed – regularly. Up to 75% of those with BS may end up with iron deficiency.
A single multi-vitamin supplement is never sufficient for those who have had bariatric surgery. A whole protocol is needed, as well as nutritional tests on a 1 to 3 month schedule. 7. Fat Soluble Vitamins Won’t Be Absorbed Vitamin E deficiency as well as vitamin A and K deficiencies are common because fat is not absorbed after the surgery.
Vitamin A and E deficiencies will cause premature aging. Wanting to be thin may not be worth the problems incurred from BS. There are many different ways to get the weight off slowly and surely that don’t involve compromising your health, but only you can make the decision about how to lose weight.

We live in amazing times, so different from just 100 years ago. Life is better, right? Yes in many ways there’s no disputing that life is, at the very least, easier. Link Between Leukemia in Kids and EMFs In the 1970’s researchers established a link between childhood leukemia and electrical power lines, creating an uproar in rural communities across America. It was found that power lines, like all electrical devices, emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that had the ability to cause cancer in children. Since this discovery, more researchers have devoted their attention to determining the full extent to which EMFs impact our health. Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland in the center of the brain and controls the sleeping and waking cycles, enhances the immune system, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure and is a potent antioxidant that plays a part in preventing cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and heart disease. Studies indicate that EMF exposure can shut down melatonin secretion in the body. Researchers at the University of North Carolina believe that the decreased levels of melatonin stemming from EMF exposure may cause depression and suicide. When they compared levels of EMF exposure and rate of suicide among more than 5,000 electrical workers and an equal number of non-electrical workers, they found that the suicide rate of the electrical workers was twice that of the control group. EMFs Also Alter Hormone Levels Robert P. Liburdy of Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory found that exposure to 12mG EMFs can suppress the ability of both
melatonin and the hormone-emulating drug tamoxifen to shut down the growth of cancer cells. Tamoxifen is a synthetic estrogen that prevents cancer cell growth by blocking the cell’s estrogen receptors. In the breast, this can starve most cancer cells of the estrogen that normally spurs their growth. An exposure to EMFs interferes with the drugs ability to bind to the estrogen receptor, thus opening the door for the cancer cells to proliferate. Further research indicates that EMFs actually have the ability to alter the hormones estrogen as well as testosterone. Charles Graham, an experimental physiologist at the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, MO, found that women exposed to 200mG EMFs overnight had significantly elevated levels of estrogen. Elevated levels of estrogen over many years have been shown to increase a woman’s risk to breast cancer. In the same study, Graham exposed men to 200mG intermittently over a 3-night period (on for 15 seconds, off for 15 seconds) and found that it reduced their levels of testosterone, a hormone drop that has been linked to testicular and prostate cancer. Often if we don’t know how to compete, we can fall behind and/or miss opportunities in life. Competition offers the opportunity to learn, to focus, and to improve oneself and one’s ability to work in sync with others. Not just in sports. Many an Artist, Doctor, or almost any other professional has benefitted in their career growth from some competitive spirit. But competitiveness held as THE important personal characteristic is generally not healthy. For one thing, a person can compete while not realizing a secondary agenda subverts “the game”, making the competition political or otherwise toxic. And we’re in a society that’s so focused on
very often missing the kids that don’t look talented (but ultimately could be very successful in that sport), but the coaches and managers are missing their real roles: Nurturing each kids’ self-esteem, teamwork skills and learning, to help them to become healthy, productive adults.

What’s “wrong” with 2nd place or 5th place, for that matter? Don’t participation, learning, exercise and experience “matter” on some levels as much as competitiveness? Frankly, there’s no one formula that fits everyone. I grew up around athletes, and some of the most competitive individuals are happy, well-adjusted adults today. Others’ competitiveness and loss of self when they lost led them down a dark, sad path. Our kids are being taught that they’re either “great” or “not good enough” almost immediately in team competitive sports. So they either choose themselves, or are encouraged to go elsewhere and “find what you’re good at”. This bodes well for losing themselves in video games, where no one is a loser. Or the alternative is to be encouraged to stay with the game as the foil for the stars, the “backup player”. I can’t blame our kids because they don’t want to participate in something where they’re marginalized and encouraged to play, simply to provide opportunities for the “destined” kids to win! Many leagues, coaches and managers don’t seem to focus on development of each and every child. Instead, they seem dedicated to their Star Players’ achievements. Not only are they

In 1947, the U.S. brought over German scientists in Project Paperclip. One of them, Herman Schwan, was hired to say that the damage from radio waves would only occur when body temperature rose. How to Improve Your Child’s Self-Esteem – and Reading This Summer By Louise Sanderson
T
here are many ways you can improve your child’s self–esteem but the way I found that works the best is by improving reading skills. This is accomplished in as little as a few weeks. Most kids that don’t want to read have this bad attitude because they aren’t reading well. They don’t comprehend what they’re reading because reading speed is too slow. They skip over words and are having a difficult time pronouncing words. Their spelling isn’t good as well. To a child where school activities make up the greatest percentage of life, poor reading skills spell disaster and failure. And to a child, this type of disaster means failure as a person. When other students or the teacher draw attention to this failure, it results in embarrassment, shame, and eventually low self-esteem. If the situation continues, the child will seek out ways he/she will be recognized – and often this includes drugs, alcohol, and crime. Reading levels of criminals in jail are always low. Low reading scores are clearly tied to crime and lack of achievement in life. A Solution That Has Proven Itself To Work The answer is to teach the child to read 5 books in a week. This may seem counter intuitive – here a child can barely read one book in a week and now the goal is 5 books. However, as was seen in two Sacramento schools, the program worked and all children read 5 books the very first week. The experience changed them so much that they continued the new habit each week thereafter. The transformation in their grades, attitudes, and selfesteem was phenomenal. Several families ended up moving the children to different schools the following school year because their grades were so much higher. How This Solution is Different Than School and Other Programs The program used – called How to Read 5 Books in A Week – isn’t simply a program where you tell the kids to do it and stand over them with a club if they don’t. Results Speak for Themselves In 2010 and 2012 when the method was taught here in Sacramento, students with learning disabilities were able to complete their five books a week equally as well as students without learning disabilities. Students that had to catch up three complete reading grade levels did so within a few months. They loved going to the library and they loved learning. And when a child loves learning, that child is going to give you a lot less trouble in life than one who doesn’t. One fourth grader commented about her results from the program: “Before the Read 5 Books in a Week Reading program, I hated reading. But now, I LOVE reading, my grades shot up to advanced level in all my subjects, and I’m a good speller. Scientific Advancements That Harm You, Part 1 By Dr. Donna
A
s much as what we’d like to believe, science hasn’t proven itself to have all the answers. In fact, in the last several decades, several scientific advancements have led to true disasters, not technological utopia. The truth is that many so-called advancements are harming you and your health, maybe even without you knowing it.

The lesson learned: if something is toxic from the start, it is always toxic. 2. Synthetic Textiles Researchers recently traced the appearance of micronized fibers in the waterways and in the fish population. It appears that every time you wash a load of laundry made from synthetic textiles, 2000+ fibers are shed into the water. There’s no filter that currently collects them and they make their way into the waterways. Because of the small size of these fibers, fish consume them. And here’s the really bad part - the fibers get past the GI tract and end up in the tissues of the fish. That means every bite of fish you eat now could contain and will contain synthetic fibers. How long will it be before a new disease appears linking these synthetic textile accumulations in the body with poor health? The lesson learned: synthetic will always cause problems. 3. Nanotechnology Health & Fitness Magazine reported on nano tech sunscreens several years ago and the havoc they were causing. Now nanotechnology is used in many industries - and whatever chemical or substance a company wants to deliver into your cells is delivered without you knowing it. Nanotechnology disregards the normal protection you have in your body to keep things out of the cell. It triumphs that substances are small enough to get into the cell and thus man can

have his way and do what he wants. Expect new diseases when these nano particles start accumulating in high levels in the cells. It’s inevitable. The lesson learned: Don’t try to outsmart God. 4. Laptop computers, iPads and Tablets I love computers but these new types are flat out dangerous to one’s health. Laptop computers are often set on people’s laps and the electromagnetic radiation field coming from them has already been shown to be high enough to cause infertility. Pads and tablets give off high electromagnetic fields and the body has no defense against them. Expect high rates of cancer from them in the next five years. The lesson learned: What’s invisible really can harm you. 5. GMO Cotton and GMO Crops There wouldn’t be so many grassroots organizations in society against GMOs if they really were a blessing. GMO cotton causes respiratory and other illnesses in the people that farm it. When you wear any article of clothing, you are getting doses of it into your system through your skin that absorbs particles, chemicals, pesticides, drugs, and anything else that’s artificial.. Figure in the damage to the environment as well and you get a disaster of epic proportions. Expect high rates of immune disorders, allergies, and chronic fatigue from these. Taekwondo: The Acceptance Of A Common Purpose By Grandmaster Clint Robinson, 9th Dan Taekwondo aerobic, cardio, stretching and increased strength and endurance benefit anyone. Even working into it in slow motion with one side or from a seated place helps the entire body improve blood flow, breathing, flexibility and balance. These are physical attributes anyone might desire, but for those who have also been challenged with a physical limitation or special need, the mental benefits include perseverance, integrity and confidence. For many of my fellow veterans, children with special needs or battling a physical limitation, courage is something they can teach the class, including this instructor.

e often mistakenly equate wholeness with aptitude, or physical ability with intelligence but Stephen Hawking might have a differing opinion we can all learn from. One of the smartest people alive is in a wheelchair, faces difficulty we cannot even imagine in simple living and yet has peered deep into the very fabric of the universe, with abilities far beyond those of normal men, to paraphrase the opening lines of TV’s classic Superman. As a Taekwondo instructor, I’ve worked with people of all walks of life since 1975. My success has been contingent on adaptability to teach people with ‘different’ abilities. Kids with spina bifida, adults coping with loss of limbs, and children with ADHD have found ways to make it to 26 CELEBRATING

class. Our RTKD active adults find benefit as do our Silver Tigers, in a non-contact martial arts form we created to meet their needs. That’s why I believe in what martial arts can offer to anyone, including the smartest man alive, or those with some of the greatest challenges, if they chose to begin training. Even knowing the mental aspects of TKD training, such as the body pressure points, is a self-defense skill that can be learned. Adapting my training to meet the needs of those working with ‘different’ abilities just requires me to learn a new aspect, point of view or alternative means to make TKD relevant for self defense. The healthy fitness or physical part of training is always going to improve an individual as the

hen it comes to cycling, saddle soreness is most probably the #1 complaint in women. On Facebook groups for cyclists, it is one of the most talked about topics. On the other hand, there is not enough advice that is found at these groups to solve the problem. Saddle sore, suffered by a lot of cyclists, is where there is serious swelling on the labia of the genitals. As a result of serious swelling some have even had to undergo surgery. Some cyclists however, suffer from urinary tract damage, genital numbness and swelling that isn’t so serious. Prevention is always better than cure. So here are a few tips to avoid saddle sore for heavy riders: 1) Purchase the perfect saddle for you. Choosing the right saddle for you is a personal thing. In short, the saddle of your choice may be a problem to another cyclist. As such, there is only one way to find out which one is best for you. That is by trying on a few saddles. A few shops have saddle fit cushions that are made of memory foam. As a result, this will allow you to measure the distance between your sit bones. Thus, these cushions will help you find the right saddle. If you are even luckier, a number of manufacturers allow you to have saddles to take home and try; ones you can borrow. Hence, you can have a test run and get the feel of the saddle.

How to Prevent Saddle Sore: A Guide for Heavy Riders
You can get soreness on one side or both sides of your bottom. Soreness on one side happens when there is a leg length discrepancy. As a result, your pelvis deviates to make the shorter leg get to the pedal. It is best to get a piece of plastic or metal (also known as shim or wedge) that can be attached between the sole of your shoe and your cleat spikes. Then affix it to your pedals. Best, Non-Toxic Way to Prevent Fleas in Your Pets By Dr. Donna
L
ike many of you, over the years, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to try out different options for keeping dogs flea-proof. My least favorite is giving the pet the toxic chemicals in veterinarian-prescribed and over-the-counter pet flea concoctions. I’m here to tell you there are other options. There are two options that work incredibly well that many people don’t ever think of. The first is the use of nematodes in the yard. The second is the use of diatomaceous earth. 1. Nematodes in the Yard To get rid of fleas, you have to think like a pro. You can kill the flea directly, kill and inhibit the eggs from hatching, or increase the predator. Nematodes are a natural predator of fleas, and there are now companies that can come out to your home and disperse nematodes in the yard. The result is that the fleas are gone, along with the grubs, cutworms, soldier ants, fungus gnats and other pesky garden insects.
The nematode enters the larvae of the flea and eject a bacteria they have in their gut into the insect. The bacteria multiplies and kills the fleas. The nematode then multiplies.
is working and maximally, 2-4 weeks. If you have a flea infestation, you may need more applications of the nematodes than one. Nematodes do not harm pets, birds or aquatic life.
When distributing nematodes, you’ll need about 5 million nematodes for 1600 square feet of garden or farm. Early spring is the time to release the nematodes; do it in the morning or just before dusk. (They don’t like direct sunlight.) You’ll apply them with a watering can or hose and sprayer. The soil should be moist during application.
You can purchase them online or get them at Home Depot and disperse them into your yard. You can also check with local pest control companies and see if they will do the job for you.

Nematodes are part of the natural world of soil. These microscopic organisms are parasitic to insect pests that live in the soil and have a larva or pupal stage. Nematodes never harm garden crops, your nice green lawn, fruits or nuts so you can put them everywhere without worry. 32 CELEBRATING

2. Diatomaceous Earth This one is my favorite. I started out applying diatomaceous earth (food grade only) to my pets’ fur but every time I pet them, a cloud of dust was released. This made it obvious I had used way too much
diatomaceous earth. The dogs would then come into the house and wherever they lay, there would be an outline of diatomaceous earth. The best way is to simply treat the yard with the diatomaceous earth in the spring or whenever you start to see fleas in your pet. Get a plastic glove and put about 4-6 cups diatomaceous earth in a big bowl. When the pet is indoors, begin sprinkling it in the yard. A dust cloud will arise so wear a protective mask so you don’t breathe in the fine dust. Every inch of the yard doesn’t have to be covered but enough of it should be covered so that you kill all the fleas. If you dust the yard before the sun sets, the morning dew will drive it into the soil instead of keeping it light, fluffy and airborne. You don’t want to breathe in any fine dust – and you don’t want your pet to breathe it in either. Apply it in the springtime and halfway through the summer. You’ll be amazed at how your pet doesn’t need any chemical flea formulations with this natural method of flea control. You can purchase diatomaceous earth at the local feed stores but remember to only get the food grade version. es, you really can stress out your dog! Many people think it’s only the other way around – it’s the dog stressing you out. But read on and find out if you’re participating in increasing your dog’s stress.
Dogs are often scared of fireworks and anything that sounds like a gun going off. The July 4th holiday is the time of the year when many owners REALLY stress out their dog to the point where the dog will do whatever it can to get away from the noise. He’ll run for miles until he drops down from sheer fatigue – and still won’t get any sleep when the fireworks are blazing.
1. Holding the dog tightly Holding a dog tightly tells the dog that it can’t get away – and that’s a big stress. Refrain from ever holding your dog tightly, especially little dogs. 2. Staring at the dog
Then the dog will be duly stressed because he doesn’t know where he is and can’t find his way home. And chalk up another set of stresses when he gets picked up and put in the pound. The stress multiplies by at least a factor of 50 if you don’t get this human behavior right.
Staring at the dog is a bold dare to have a fight. Never stare at a dog unless you are retuning a glance from your own dog. 3. Waking up a sleeping dog There’s no reason to wake up a dog while it’s sleeping. Just like you don’t like it when someone wakes you, don’t wake up your dog during sleep. 4. Taking food out of a dog’s dish while the dog is eating Many of the behaviors that stress dogs out are the same ones that would stress out humans if they were done to a human. If someone altered your food while you were eating, wouldn’t you be stressed? You might begin thinking, “Well, what was wrong with the food in the first place that some had to be removed?” or you may think, “Why do I need this extra morsel?” 5. Punish the dog for doing doggy things If you leave chicken bones in the garbage, does it make sense to punish the dog if he goes through the trash to find them? Maybe the person to punish is yourself! Think about it. What did you do to contribute to the behavior? If you’re at fault in any way, forget punishing the dog…
6. Using different verbal commands for the same behavior.
Keep your dog healthy and nonstressed and you’ll always have a dog you can be proud of, and one who is destined to be your best friend for life. H&F
If your dog sees a squirrel, you need one command for not running after the squirrel. It might be, “No!”. Other commands such as “Leave it”, “Don’t get it”, “Not for you!”, “No running” or other types of command will only confuse the dog. 7. Saying “You’ll be fine,” “It’s okay…” and other such phrases when taking the dog to the veterinarian when there will be pain involved. Dogs are conditioned just like humans are. So when you say, “You’ll be fine”, then your dog has to associate this term with whatever happens. Think of something to say when your dog is going in for painful procedures or say nothing at all about it. July/August
