GARDENING

Top 10 Organic Gardening Tips By Vera Pappas

y using only organic gardening supplies; your gardening tasks will be easier and more enjoyable.

1. Compost, an all-natural soil amendment is made through the use of composters. Composters break down organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, and food scraps to make a 100% organic, all natural soil additive. Composters come in varying shapes, sizes and designs. Research composters and choose one that meets your needs. Making your own natural compost is a great alternative to other organic gardening supplies you would ordinarily have to buy, and it’s free! 2. Rain barrels collect water from your roof and store it until needed. Rainwater is softer and chemical free. Rain Barrels are great for keeping your plants healthy and saving water. Many rain barrels are made from reused food drums and recycled plastic, keeping with the commitment to sustainable living. You can collect approximately 675 gallons of rain off your roof from a single rainstorm. Stored rain water supplies much needed moisture to your gardens during extreme dry spells where rationing is necessary. 3. All Natural and organic fertilizers supplies much needed nutrients to plantings. Natural and organic fertilizers generally have a slow release so nutrients last over time. Natural and organic fertilizers such as liquefied worm poop and tea from composters, are among the top natural and organic fertilizers and an essential ingredient to your organic gardening supplies. 4. Push reel mowers are a great way to be organic! Push reel mowers use no gas or electric, only your own energy. Push reel mowers are lightweight, easy to use and gives your lawn that golf course look. Owning a push reel mower is an important part of organic gardening. 5. Grow native plants. Native plants require less water. They are also naturally more insect and disease resistant than other plants. Healthy, lush gardens made from 4

indigenous plants also make a natural home for birds. 6. Container gardening is good for planting your favorite flowers and vegetables when space is limited! Use large containers such as steel buckets and wooden barrels for creative container gardening. Container gardens do not require a lot of organic material due to being enclosed. Many gardening containers such as green pots are all natural, made from all natural elements such as rice hulls and coconut fiber. 7. Using only natural and organic gardening supplies such as Insecticidal Soap, Horticultural Oil or Organic Disease Control will keep your garden healthy, naturally. Organic gardening supplies leave no hazardous residue and break down naturally into the soil. Natural predators such as bats, praying mantis and ladybugs are great organic insect controls. Bat boxes are effective for keeping bats nearby and supplies shelter through the harsh winter months. Enjoying and benefiting from organic gardening is dependent upon the use of the highest quality organic gardening supplies. 8. Mulch your flowerbeds and vegetable garden to retain moisture around plants. Mulch supplies your plants with much needed moisture throughout hot, sunny days. Mulching also keeps weeds away. Apply all natural worm poop fertilizer around plantings when mulching. Your organic garden will love you for it.

9. Create a bird habitat by placing birdhouses, birdbaths and bird feeders in your yard. Birds are fun to watch and will control the insect population in a natural way. Pick a quiet section of your yard to keep a variety of birding supplies to attract birds of your choice. Bird food such as sunflower hearts and suet are great treats. 10. Whether you are working on your lawn, flowerbed or vegetable garden, have fun. Remember, all natural supplies will make organic gardening easier and more enjoyable. The following is a list of recommended all natural and organic gardening supplies: composter, rain barrels, organic fertilizers, push reel mower, natural gardening containers, birding supplies, natural homemade compost, these are the best equipment, tools and supplies for keeping your plants, turf and environment healthy. No Fail Herb & Cheese Bread Recipe By Nhu-Y Nguyen

This amazingly tasty and easy to make herb and cheese bread requires only 5 minutes of preparation the night before and 10 minutes on the day of bread baking. In between all that, you just let the bread rest and allow the yeast to slowly do its thing. You heard right, folks: all you do is mix the ingredients together, let it rest overnight, put it into your baking pan, let rise and bake. You never have to break a sweat. This recipe has some whole grain in it for added depth of flavor and healthfulness. I recommend you make the dough after dinner so that it will be ready when you are the next morning. In the summer, you can replace the dried Italian seasoning with fresh herbs, increasing the amount to 3 to 5 tablespoons of finely chopped herbs. Among the yummy herbs you can choose are: green onion, sage, thyme, rosemary, basil, chives and tarragon. Here is the recipe: Makes one 1-1/2 pound loaf; fits a 9 x 5 inch bread pan 2 -1/3 cups all purpose flour 2/3 cups rye or whole wheat flour 2/3 cup grated old cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1/3 teaspoon instant yeast 1-1/4 teaspoons salt 1-1/2 cups water, room temperature Combine all the dry ingredients, including the herbs, in a bowl and stir well. Add the water and stir. The dough will appear very loose and shaggy. Cover and let proof overnight for about 12-18 hours. The dough will appear bubbly at the surface. The next morning, invert the dough onto a well-floured counter. Fold the dough up in thirds like an envelope using a bench scraper. Gently lift and transfer the dough into a 9 x 5 inch bread pan. Cover and let rest until the dough rises to the top of the pan, about 1 hour. Bake at 375 degrees F for 35-45 minutes or until the bread appears golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Cool at least 1 hour before serving. For more detailed instructions, including step-by-step photos and a photo of this delicious herb and cheese bread, visit Baking Bread & More at www.homemadegoodness-baking-bread-and-more.com and click under No Knead Bread. The upper neck can become misaligned by an accident or injury, bad posture, and even the birthing process. Once misaligned the rest of the spine will begin compensating which can result in postural distortion. This distortion manifests as a contracted short leg, one hip higher or lower than the other, twisting by the entire spine, one shoulder lower or higher than the other, and head tilt. The body will also tend to lean to one side. This can be seen as the person placing more weight on one foot usually the side of the short leg. I have seen patients placing more than 30 pounds more weight on one foot by having them stand on bilateral weight scales. Can you imagine how huge an impact this could have over time in terms of wear and tear of the joints especially the hip, knee, and ankle joints? Many times knee, hip, and ankle pain can be helped by just re-aligning the atlas vertebrae. Even conditions such as plantar fasciitis can develop when the atlas is out of alignment for awhile. Other conditions that can be caused by this misalignment are migraine headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, fibromyalgia, restless legs, digestive problems, and many more problems that people commonly visit the doctor for.

Q: I’ve been struggling with the behavior of a classmate whom I know didn’t graduate, but is promoting himself as if he has a degree from ‘X’ University. I know this to be true because he recently asked me to proof read his resume and cover letter. His resume boldly stated he graduated with honors and has worked two years in the field for another company. How can someone lie so easily and think this is the way to get ahead in the world? Knowing what he is doing, isn’t it my responsibility to inform the company? Struggling Sam A: Dear Struggling Sam, If you decide it is your responsibility to make all the wrongs you notice of the world right, you will be struggling for a very long time. As there are many companies in the world selling less then quality services or products and promoting them as top quality, it is up to the consumer to note the ‘buyer beware’ rule of the world. The same goes for a company hiring a new employee; it is up to them to check his or her qualifications and references. It is the consumer or the employer’s responsibility to do the background check. My father’s wise words ring in my mind as if they were yesterday. He said, “If you are going to be a liar, you must have an excellent memory.” Although it may appear to you people can lie to get ahead in the world, they too struggle every day with keeping up the charade. Having to remember every lie told, and to whom, is a life sentence in which you never get released for good behavior. Q: Lately I find myself wanting another career. I seem to grow tired after two years of any job I start. How do I create the career of my dreams that keeps my interest for years to come? Unfilled Career Seeker A: Dear Unfilled Career Seeker, It is very common for people who need change in their life to find themselves wanting to change careers every two years. To create the career of your dreams, you must know what you are looking for in a career in order to you to develop or find it. To do this your dream career must be based on your values. Values are words like creativity, variety, challenge, enjoyment or wealth. Values are filters, normalizations, words that are more abstract and cannot be put into a wheel barrel. They hold meaning to you and have energy behind them. They are what motivates you and keeps you enjoying your career. Values determine how you spend your time,

money, and energy. When ‘something’ bothers you—‘something’ is going against your values. Negatives in your values act as barriers to your success. When you are unhappy in your career it is because of your values.

RELATIONSHIPS

Help Me, Ronda! To know your own career values ask yourself the question, what is important to me about my career? Make a list and prioritize the list starting with what is most important to you. Knowing what you want in a career today, will prevent you from having to change careers again in the near future. Basing your career on your values will transform you from the unfulfilled career seeker to being fulfilled in your new career. To help you with this process, go to the free Values – Ladder to Success video. www.lifepotential.ca/values_free_download.php Q: I am 23 and getting married in June. I don’t want my best friend, since childhood, to stand up for me in my wedding. In high school I was slim yet shapely and she was skinny and not so shapely; we did everything together. Since high school I have put on the pounds and she has developed a nice figure more like I had at 16. I don’t feel we have much in common anymore. Everyone is assuming she will stand by my side at my wedding, but it’s MY wedding and I want to share it with my current female friends. We are all full figured women and love each other. My childhood friend does not fit in with my new friends and I don’t want her feeling uncomfortable. How will I tell her I have chosen not to have her in my wedding? Grown-up Voluptuous Vivian A: Dear Grown-up Voluptuous Vivian, Tell her the truth. It is not about her not feeling comfortable around your new friends; it is about you not feeling comfortable around her. Tell her you only want friends who are over weight and do not remind you of the great figure you once had. Tell her you would rather end the friendship than to be upstaged by her at your own wedding. Tell her she deserves a better friend. It may be time to take a deeper look at your own insecurity. You may be voluptuous but you are far from grown-up. HUMOR

Taking Your Jokes to the Next Level By Kelly Swanson

O

ften as comedians we stop short in the humor writing process. We find the funny and move on. We walk away not realizing the gem that lies waiting just a breath away—that element that will take the joke from funny to genius. I can speak from experience because I’ve been stuck in a pattern of quitting too soon.

toys, potty training, etc. Now you can take those topics and find topics to spin off of them. For example, childbirth could result in: the epidural, what if men had babies, the pictures, who has the worst birthing story, etc. And you can keep going and going and going. You can turn who has the worst birthing story into a competition at a cookout. I have used this process to turn a handful of jokes into a twentyminute show or a short story. The key here is to let your mind go. Don’t look for the funny. Just write.

How do I know when I’ve stopped too soon? Usually my gut is telling me that I found the funny but missed the nugget—an intuition that I have wrapped it up before really cultivating it to the fullest potential. Another way I know is because I see the other comedians who have found their nuggets. I can see their jokes being on a higher level than mine. Sure, I may have found the funny. But they found the funnier. Think you may have this problem too? Here are some signs that you are stopping too soon: • You just know it. You have this feeling that you settled for whatever came to you first. • The joke gets a weak laugh from your audience and you know the concept is funnier than that. You also know that it’s too funny to throw it away. • When you compare your jokes to other comedians’ jokes, they fall short. • Your joke topics fall into that common area shared by other comedians. There is nothing really unique about your joke. • When you wrote it and came back three days later it wasn’t so funny anymore. • You hear three other people tell pretty much the same joke. Okay, so let’s say we have a problem. How do we fix it? How do we keep going with our joke? How do we take a joke to the next level? Here is what I’ve come up with based on my written research, advice from colleagues, and a little soul searching. 10

CELEBRATING

YEARS

|

Let your audiences help you. If your jokes are funny enough to use, go ahead and start using them. Then let your audiences tell you what needs to be fixed. This takes time but it works. If I take the time to mingle with my audience after a show, quite often they will come up and tell me ways to improve my jokes, or things that they thought of to add to the joke. I don’t take it personally. I’ve gotten some of my best jokes that way. Let your audiences work for you. Walk around it like a crab. Carry the joke idea in your mind for a while. Chew on it, as my uncle Skeeter would say. I usually carry a story idea around in my head for several weeks. Without even being intentional about it, new ideas will come to me until the story idea is much better than if I’d written it when it first came to me. Brain Map it. You probably already know what this is, but in case you don’t, it’s the process of picking your topic apart and finding all related topics. You let your mind go and as you come up with each tangent turn around and find a related topic to that. For example, if your topic is parenting, you would come up with things like childbirth, discipline,

Play What-If. Take your topic and ask yourself, What if… happened? Or what if…happened? Or what about if… happened? The key here is to think of unusual things that could happen in your topic. Let’s say parenting is your topic. You brain map it and get on the subject of how easy it is to become a parent. What if you had to have a license to be a parent? What if parents could get their licenses revoked? What if you could get your license revoked for doing stupid stuff to embarrass your kids—like wearing black socks and sandals to the beach. What if kids could divorce their parents? Wasn't there a movie about that? Insert a Conflict. Things get so much more interesting when a conflict is added to the picture. And how about a second one? And another one? This is the fuel for a good sitcom episode. One mishap is funny. Two is funnier. Three is hilarious. Some of these tips will not apply to the joke you are currently working on. But some will. And understand that these are not formulas for writing jokes, they are exercises to get your creative juices kicked up to the next level. By the way, if you have more helpful tips on how to take your joke to the next level, please let me know. Emotional First Aid:

MENTAL HEALTH

Steps to Success

By Pat McGuinness

N

ahn, Na, Nahn, Na, Nahn, Naaa! You’re stupid! You’re just a weakling! What’s the matter? You big cry baby! Have you ever been the adult who stumbled upon a situation like this before? It’s as if you’re the paramedic and now you have to perform emotional first aid. Waaah! She hurt my feelings! As an adult, how would you handle this? You might start with the child who was being mean. You might tell them kindly but firmly to stop teasing. Next, you might turn to the sobbing child, put your arm around them and console them. This example is a metaphor to describe how we subconsciously prevent ourselves from being successful, especially if something bad happens to us. The children I just described are like different parts of our selves. One part is judgmental, critical and mean. The other part feels hurt, sad or ashamed. When this happens, it is easy to become immobilized. Fortunately, there’s another part, the adult. If the inner adult knows what to do, it can get those two kids playing together nicely again. If your life takes a turn for the worse, you’ll have to get unstuck in order to succeed. Here’s a 3-step formula you can use to administer emotional first aid. First, be self aware. Next, practice self acceptance through compassion. Finally, face the challenge. To improve your self-awareness, begin to notice when you judge yourself harshly. The most common judgments include, “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t matter,” and “There’s something wrong with me.” Once you detect this happening, act like the adult in the opening scene. Calmly but firmly direct the child (or critical part of yourself) to stop teasing. Then, console the part of yourself with the hurt feelings. To console yourself, you must have compassion, which is a combination of empathy and love. To experience compassion, connect with that feeling, just as you would for a young child. These steps are required for

self- acceptance. If you try to skip this step, your ego will get in the way of your success by making you defensive. If you free yourself from defensiveness, you can easily take in new information, learn valuable lessons and be well prepared for Step 3. Facing the challenge, after administering emotional first aid, is akin to asking the (inner) children. “Do you think you can get back in there and give it every thing you’ve got?” Now that you have dealt with the “emotional stuff”, you can begin facing the challenge without the pressure of your emotions overpowering reason. This helps you be more available to others and their solutions. It helps you problem solve more effectively because you are more likely to see reality for what it is. Through acceptance, you grow strong. When you are strong, you can face any challenge. Examples of people who have used these principles include Lance Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, and Lee Iacocca. Each achieved huge successes in their careers and experienced huge failures. Each knew to follow this formula and each experienced longevity as the top performers in their careers. What’s happened to you? Divorce? A bad break up? Maybe you’ve been laid off or fired from your job. Maybe you’ve gone bankrupt.

What are you going to do now? Have you increased your awareness and stopped the inner child from torturing you? Have you exercised compassion for yourself by consoling hurt feelings? Are you able to learn whatever lessons come your way without letting your ego get involved? When you have accepted yourself, you are more likely to get a clear view of reality and less likely to exchange truth for comfort. Respond to setbacks by following these three steps and continue to achieve success. Keep working on your job search, your relationships, and success in your career. Every aspect of your life depends on your ability to handle new challenges, and your ability to learn and get back to solving the problems you are faced with. Anyone can apply this formula. If you want to recover from a personal tragedy, stop torturing yourself, accept yourself for who you are and learn from your mistakes. Above all, get back in the game and face the challenge. Your thoughts have a very big impact on your immune system. During disasters we need our immune system to be at full strength. Since our mind and body work in harmony, positive visualization of your body being strong and able to fight off invaders will help your body do its job more effectively. Children love using their imagination, so playing a game of them being a protector, like one of their action figures, is a great way to have them do the positive visualization as well. It may be a game to them, but it will still send positive messages to their body to be strong.

One of the most rewarding feelings you can have is in helping others. The benefits are two-fold. Feeling good about helping others brings joy and happiness into your life and helps reduce the fear of disaster. MITCH DARNELL, MA, OM •RELATIONSHIP COACH & WEDDING OFFICIANT

Dear Mitch, y family is not dealing well with the tragedy in Japan, and I really need some guidance, please! We have always thought, “We’re so lucky. That would never be us!” You see people on the Internet and television who have lost everything. It always feels really remote, you know? My brother taught English in Kyoto for seven years. He came back to the USA two years ago. He feels very connected to his Japanese friends. He says he’s “fine”, but he’s isolating, and whenever we do see him, he looks terrible, Mitch. He’s exhausted and shaky. One time when my sister and my mother went over to his apartment, it took him 15 minutes to answer the door, and at first he wouldn’t “believe” it was them, and wouldn’t open the door for them! AND my brother-in-law is an LA County Firefighter on a Search and Rescue Mission in Ofunato City, north of Tokyo. My God, what he’s having to see! Over the last couple of weeks, his communication has become more infrequent. He told me he doesn’t really want to burden anyone, but he can’t think of anything besides what he’s experiencing. I know he’s trying to protect us as he witnesses entire lives that have been destroyed! Our mother is hysterical, crying, not sleeping, and not eating. We’re trying to force her to see a doctor, but she won’t go. She always takes care of everyone, and this is killing her to not be able to help two people she loves! Mitch, is there a way to make sense of this, and to somehow live a normal life at this time?

Hit Hard in Sacramento Sacramento, CA

Hey Hit Hard, isasters remind us so quickly of how precious life is, and of its impermanence. Thank you for your letter. It seems a cliché but family is ultimately what “counts” so take care of yourselves individually while you find means to actively support each other. Your family needs to continue as your top priority. Lovingly connected family can experience joy even at life’s most challenging moments. In support of your efforts for your family, here’s a basic review of the Grieving Stages..

D

∙ Shock/Denial - People may move in and out of this stage. This can be debilitating, even paralyzing. Others around someone in denial struggle to keep the victim grounded. ∙ Bargaining - Believe it or not, your brother could be at this point by subconsciously offering up his pain in “trade” for relief for his friends in Japan. ∙ Anger - Sometimes the most empowering thing we can do is to feel the injustice, the fact that life can feel so unfair. If expressed in healthy manners, this stage can be cathartic. Family members at this stage should avoid driving or other dangerous activities. Meanwhile, others

∙ Depression - Not eating, anxiety, insomnia, loss of interest in life activities are all signs of depression. This can be much more serious than it appears. Your Mother and Brother both appear to be dealing with grief-related depression, and should see a professional ASAP. ∙ Acceptance - Like all of these stages, acceptance may come and go. True acceptance involves some sense of serenity, a belief in the value of continuing with life while also appreciating the value of what was lost. So what has been lost for families dealing with disaster? Clearly, those in the disaster zone are looking at loss of history, community, loved ones, and beloved external elements of self–the accoutrements and surroundings of our lives. Supporting your family, particularly when multiple members are fraught with this trauma, probably is best served utilizing professional support. Do your best to continue to engage your family in conversation. Some of those worst moments, when shared with someone who loves us, can lead to healing. Are there any family members or friends who can also lend a hand? Connection can lay seeds for getting through the stages to acceptance, and may offer resources. Meanwhile, know that these stages are all normal and are appropriate to healing. One has to take the journey to truly reach an end. But this journey is a rough one, and you all need to consistently communicate. Meanwhile, watch carefully to ensure basic physiological needs are being supported–eating, home, clothing, etc. And, find ways to take care of your needs. Don’t let this pain take your health down. Charity begins at home.

spring cleaning for your life By Dr. Dennis Godby & Meghan O”Hara, RD

S

pring is the perfect season to open the doors and windows of our homes and do a thorough “spring cleaning.” It is also a great time to “air out” the houses of our body and mind to revitalize our physical and mental health.

else has “made” or forced us to feel certain emotions. If we are feeling angry, resentful, or irritated, it is undeniably harming our health. Stress hormones are released, our blood pressure rises, and every cell in our body is affected. These feelings become a very physical problem for the individual, not whoever “caused” them.

We are creatures of habit and routine. And while some of these are serving us well, like daily exercise; others like our daily double martini, or staying up late, may not. Unless we make a conscious effort to change our ways, we tend to continue in our same patterns. So take a few minutes to be honest with yourself about how your habits are serving you. The heavy, fatty, dense foods that our bodies crave during the winter may have taken a toll on our bodies by springtime, and we are ready for some cleansing. Our internal organs (liver and pancreas in particular) have to work hard to produce the enzymes needed to digest and absorb our food. Do you often feel bloated, or gassy, or constipated (less than 1 bowel movement each day)? These are some of the signs that your body may not be digesting your food

While there are certainly situations that can be stressful or people with whom it is difficult to deal, we still have choices. We can either give them our power and emotions, or we can stay centered and know that the issues outside of us do not have to disturb our inner peace. If we find that we are in situations where we are constantly being upset and cannot maintain a sense of calm, then perhaps it is time to change the situation. Who we are really hurting when we’re holding on to these negative feelings is ourselves. By taking responsibility for our reactions, we are empowered to change these emotions. In this season of fresh starts and rebirth, perhaps it is time to change both our attitudes and habits. H&F properly. How often do you give your body a break by lightening its load and eating meals consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables? By giving these organs a break for a few days, we can bring our systems back into balance and allow them to function optimally once again.
Our minds may also be ready for spring cleaning. Negative emotions, such as: anger, jealousy, revenge, bitterness, and holding grudges can be toxic. Taking responsibility for our feelings is liberating. However, It is 100 times more common to blame others for our emotions. She “made me” angry or whatever emotion one is feeling. It is disempowering and dishonest to claim that somebody

Organic Gardening Books By Phil Nauta

T

hese organic gardening books are those that have had the most profound effect on me, and I have read a lot of gardening books. But these books are the best of the best, in my opinion. BOTANY/PLANTS BOOK The Secret Life of Plants. The authors of Secrets Of The Soil put out amazing organic gardening books and this classic is a look at the world of plants and their relationship to us. It goes into how plants can think, how they respond to music, and how they respond to being loved/ being threatened, yet sprinkled throughout are many lessons we can actually use in the garden. Anyone who believes plants are sentient beings will love this book. A must read. MICROORGANISM BOOK Teaming with Microbes. Healthy organic soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. These guys make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from us organic gardening and farming addicts to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals. I highly recommend this as one of the organic gardening books for you.

ORGANIC SOIL MANAGEMENT BOOK The Non-Toxic Farming Handbook. This book is not only for farmers! It is a successful integration of diverse techniques and technologies of classical organic farming, Albrecht-style soil fertility balancing, and Reams-method organic soil and plant testing and analysis, and it is great for organic home gardeners. It covers fertility inputs, in-the-field testing, foliar feeding, refractometers, tillage, livestock nutrition, moon cycles and subtle energies, and more. PERMACULTURE BOOK Gaia’s Garden. This is one of my favorite organic gardening books for beginners. It describes an organic gardening system that combines the best features of wildlife habitat, edible landscapes, and conventional gardens into a self-renewing landscape that lets nature do most of the work. It has many good design principles, so it is partially a design book. This is my favorite introduction to permaculture because it is a fun read that really simplifies the topic. It’s not as comprehensive as Mollison’s works, but a great intro. I love this book. VEGETABLE GARDENING BOOK The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food. This is one of those organic

gardening books that shows you how to select, grow, harvest, and store more than 765 varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits and nuts. Not all that much info on growing from seed and transplanting, but a pretty darn big encyclopedia of food plants and good information on vegetable garden layout.

How to Grow Strawberries By Peter Damien Ryan

G

rowing Luscious Strawberries. I used the phrase growing ‘luscious’ strawberries because that adjective is rare with store bought strawberries! But, not if you grow your own! Part of the problem with supermarket strawberries is our demand for them to be available all year round—so the growing is forced, the plant modified and the result is loss of full flavor. I also wonder how much of their nutritional value is compromised compared to home grown ones. The larger ones—which often look good and inviting are renowned for being poor in flavor. Of course, the new cultivars are claimed to have both desirable qualities—size and flavor— but I am yet to be convinced.

How To Grow Strawberries

Strawberries can be grown from the tropics down to sub-polar regions, obviously with different care requirements. Common to all areas though is good well-drained, friable soil that is well composted and mulched. For the home grower, you can plant in a dedicated garden bed or in pots. Strawberries are herbaceous—which simply means that the stems and leaves die off to ground level at the conclusion of the growing season, but return in the next season. They produce runners in the summer, which can be cut off and planted elsewhere for more plants. Plant size will vary, but some varieties may get to 18 inches tall by 36 inches wide—so if growing in pots, choose a smaller plant, unless you have biggish pots. Make the beds raised or mounded up. Place straw around the plants to keep the fruit clean and to stop moisture creating fungal issues and rotting the fruit. Commercial growers 16

use black plastic, but I straw is better at home as it means less soil renewal work when the plant has finished producing the fruit for the season. Avoid planting strawberries where you have previously grown tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplants and other berries in the last three years as fungal diseases from these plants may still be present and infect your new plantings. A recommended system is to use a 3-year rotation system. Establish 3 beds if you have the room. The first year the new plants in bed 1 will be very productive and will produce runners. Take runners from bed 1—put into bed 2 and develop it. Put runners from 1 and 2 into bed 3. By then bed 1 will need a rest and leave it for a couple of years before re-planting. You can try soil change over, but that is a lot of work. Like-wise with pot growing—change the soil annually.

Recommended varieties: Cabot

(late, mid season), Kent (high yields), Tristar (Summer into fall), Veestar (early season)

Harvest

They will flower from July to September generally. Wait until the strawberry is about three quarters ripe and then pick to beat the snails and birds getting to them before you do! • Be consistent. To reap the benefits of improved health and wellbeing that come with going gluten free, you must stick with it. It can take a month or more of consistent gluten-free eating to begin to feel the health benefits. But the longer you stick with being gluten free, the easier and more second nature it will become.

any products on the store shelves today carry the words “gluten free” on them. But just what does that mean, and why is it there? The label means plenty! But in a nutshell, it means avoiding wheat, spelt, barley and rye, and a variety of other grainbased ingredients. Gluten-free foods are being sought out by many people, including the over 3 million people who have celiac disease, as well as millions more who have a gluten intolerance or sensitivity. The good news it that while it may seem like going gluten free is a daunting task, it is actually isn’t all that difficult! “Millions of people have to go gluten free to live healthy lives,” explains Dr. Gary Kaplan, founder of The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine (www.kaplanclinic.com), located in McLean, Va. “If you have celiac disease, consuming gluten can lead to many serious health problems; therefore, it needs to be completely eliminated from you diet. Those with gluten intolerances and sensitivities also need to adopt a gluten-free diet so they can alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms, such as joint and abdominal pain, that they may experience.” Going gluten free sometimes seems like an uphill battle, but that is mainly because it is a new concept. There are a few things to keep in mind to help keep going gluten free easier and more successful, including: • Change your mindset. It’s about taking charge of your heath. The first thing that needs to change isn’t your diet; it’s your thinking! Getting used to the idea that your dietary habits need to change because they’re making you sick. Recognize that making the necessary changes will greatly improve how you feel. • Clean out the cupboards. If you live alone, clean out all of the items in your pantry that contains gluten. Either give

“Celiac disease is a diagnosis that is frequently missed for decades and can pose serious health problems,” Dr. Kaplan says. “Going gluten free is critical and in many cases will resolve the symptoms. Frequently, however, a more comprehensive approach is necessary to help individuals with this disease return to optimal health. We work closely with each of our patients to develop an individualized treatment program that helps her or him thrive being gluten free.” them away or toss them out! If you share a kitchen with others who are not sensitive to gluten, create a separate place for the ingredients and foods that you can eat. This will help prevent cross-contamination. • Start reading labels. While becoming gluten free, always take time to read food labels carefully. Once you know what items are gluten free, your grocery shopping will quicker and easier. • Prepare ahead. If you are planning to dine out, you’ll need to do some investigating ahead of time. Find out what foods will be served or what gluten-free items are available on the menu. When attending a party, you can always bring a dish of your own. More and more restaurants offer gluten-free menus. The bottom line: Don’t be shy about asking questions about ingredients. Your good health depends upon you vigilantly avoiding gluten! • Get support. If you’re going gluten free, get the support you need to get started, and see it through. This can be done by working with a dietitian, nutritionist, or even hooking up with others who have gone gluten free. There are support groups, both online and in-person, that can help you navigate the new terrain.

Tips for Going Gluten Free

Celiac disease causes an abnormal immune reaction to gluten, which causes inflammation of the small intestines, which in turn can prevent the body from absorbing nutrients as it should. If undiagnosed, it can lead to many other health problems. Those with gluten intolerance suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, headaches, and depression. Although someone with gluten intolerance may have many of the same symptoms as a person with celiac disease, it is important to note that, unlike celiac disease, gluten intolerance is not an autoimmune disease. “Topricin has proven to be effective in resolving pain issues for individuals suffering from neuropathy, with many reporting that it has helped to reduce or eliminate their dependency on oral pain medications,” says Lou Paradise, president of Topical BioMedics and product formulator. “This is a ground-breaking advancement, as the medical community has struggled for years to find viable treatment options for patients with nerve-related pain. With no other options at hand, they have had to rely on the pharmaceutical community, whose chemical-based drugs prove ineffective and compromise the health of the patient by causing more harm then good due to the serious side effects they pose. Chemical compounds/drugs attempt to treat the symptoms and not the cause of the problem, and as a result cannot provide the relief that people suffering with neuropathic pain seek.”

BioMedics, Inc., is the research and development leader in topical regulated natural medicines for pain relief. The company’s family of products includes classic Topricin, Topricin Foot Therapy Cream that addresses painful foot and ankle ailments and conditions, and Topricin Junior for children, which won the Parent Tested/Parent Approved (PTPA™) Seal of Approval in fall 2010. What is Gluten? What is Celiac Disease? Why Does it Matter?

W

hat is Gluten? Gluten is present in the outer casing of wheat, rye and barley, some oats also contain gluten. Gluten is found in oats due to: (1) years of crop rotation and (2) cross contamination. Why is Gluten Bad? For about 1% of the population, gluten has a negative impact on the immune system. This negative impact is otherwise know as Celiac Disease. Another percentage of individuals are gluten sensitive (number of afflicted individuals is being researched currently at Stanford University). Due to the symptoms associated with Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity, many individuals view Gluten as evil. What is Celiac Disease? Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that is triggered by microscopic levels of gluten (as small as 1/6th of a bread crumb). Only 3% of individuals with Celiac Disease are correctly diagnosed. Celiac is known as a Cameleon Disease, because individuals can have one or several symptoms from a list of more than 310. Though Celiac is known as a disease, it is the only auto-immune disease with a cure, a 100% Gluten Free Diet. How do I know if I have Celiac Disease? The symptoms of Celiac vary. On a general basis, symptoms may include:

26

I don’t have Celiac Disease, so I can eat gluten, right? Not necessarily. Gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity and gluten allergies require much more research at the academic level. While the statistics are currently unknown, individuals that are allergic and/or sensitive to gluten should not be consuming gluten in their diets. For these individuals, consuming gluten could lead to severe health complications in the future. These complications can cause financial strain and/or death. I think I’m gluten sensitive, should I try a gluten-free diet? It’s important to know that Celiac Disease has many symptoms, more than 310 correlate. If you plan to try out the gluten free diet, you negate your doctor from accurately testing you for Celiac in the future. Materials on how to get tested can be picked up at the Gluten Free Specialty Market located in Downtown Sacramento. My doctor told me to try the gluten free diet. If my symptoms reduce, I should get tested for Celiac. What should I do? It might be necessary for you to get a second opinion before starting a gluten free diet.

Once you have begun a gluten free diet, you may no longer produce the antibodies that are used and needed to determine whether Celiac Disease is present. I think I have Celiac. How can I be tested for this disease? There are five major criteria for Celiac Disease, 4 of the 5 criteria must be met for a ‘gold standard’ diagnosis to be made. The criteria are: (1) symptoms related to Celiac Disease, (2) auto antibodies present in the IgA or tTG tests, (3) the HLA-DQ2 and/ or HLA-DQ8 gene, (4) Biopsy shows damage, (5) Symptoms resolve with implementation of a strict gluten-free diet. Are Celiac Tests ever wrong? There are specific conditions that might result in false negatives: (1) individual is already eating gluten-free, (2) in young children, an immature immune system might be a problem, (3) human error might result fom improperly trained laboratories and mis-interpretation of data, (4) specific health conditions, like auto-immune disorders. I’m off gluten can I get tested for Celiac? Some doctors might recommend a six month gluten challenge to determine whether Celiac Disease is present. For this challenge to be as reliable as possible, a slice of bread and cookie must be consumed each day for 6 months, before an individual is re-tested for Celiac Disease. Less than 6 months of a gluten challenge could result in a false negative. If you live in the Sacramento area, stop by the Gluten Free Specialty Market located at: 2612 J Street, Sacramento. inkgo Biloba is most commonly known as a memory-enhancer, but new studies are showing that extracts from the leaves of the Gingko biloba tree may protect cells from radiation.

If further studies prove what researchers at the Korean Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences have found, this could be a breakthrough for cancer patients suffering from the side effects of radiation treatment. The Gingko biloba tree has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Among other things, it is used for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, plus memory enhancement in healthy adults. However, in the past few decades, scientists have discovered its value as a circulatory aid. The same increase in blood flow to the brain that helps Alzheimer’s victims can aid in the treatment of vertigo, tinnitus, disorientation, headaches, depression, and prevention of acute mountain sickness. Individuals suffering from other circulation-related conditions such as leg cramps also report favorable results from using Ginkgo. However, it is likely Ginkgo’s anti-oxidant properties that will aid in recovery from radiation treatment. The body produces free radicals during metabolism, but some diseases, pollution, and radiation can increase the number of

free radicals in the body—and that’s when anti-oxidants such as Gingko can promote healing by destroying the excess of free radicals and bringing the body back into balance. The tests done in Korea involved treating the white blood cells of healthy people. They treated half with a saline solution and half with a commercially available ginkgo biloba extract, and then studied the effects of radiation on the cells. One third of the cells treated with saline solution died, while only 5% of the cells treated with ginkgo died. The Ginkgo biloba tree is believed to be one of the oldest species on earth. It’s value in medicine has been known for centuries, and yet, it continues to amaze scientists by its versatility in promoting—or protecting— good health. Let’s hope that those scientists keep researching the Ginkgo biloba tree— and all the other wonders that the earth offers for our health. M. G. T

he growing concern surrounding the release of radiation from an earthquake and tsunami-stricken nuclear complex in Japan has raised fears of radiation exposure to populations in North America from the potential plume of radioactivity crossing the Pacific Ocean. To help Americans understand their radiation-related health risks, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), the American Thyroid Association (ATA), The Endocrine Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) issued a joint statement (www.endo-society.org/advocacy/ policy/upload/Joint-Statement-onRadiation-Risks-to-Health.pdf).

AACE, ATA, The Endocrine Society and SNM will continue to monitor potential risks to health from this accident and will issue amended advisories as warranted. The Endocrine Society Founded in 1916, The Endocrine Society is the world’s oldest, largest and most active organization devoted to research on hormones and the clinical practice of endocrinology. Today, The Endocrine Soci-

follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ theaace. American Thyroid Association The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is the lead organization in promoting thyroid health and understanding thyroid biology. The ATA values scientific inquiry, clinical excellence, public service, education, collaboration, and collegiality.

RADIATION

Radiation Risks To Health A non-profit medical society founded in 1923, the ATA fulfills its mission through supporting excellence and innovation in research, clinical care, education, and public health. ATA members are physicians and scientists who work to enhance the understanding of thyroid physiology and pathophysiology, improve the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases, and promote the education of physicians, patients, and the public about thyroid disorders. For more information, visit www.thyroid.org.

The statement suggests that the principal radiation source of concern, in regard to impact on health, is radioactive iodine including iodine-131.This presents a special risk to health because exposure of the thyroid to high levels may lead to development of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer years later. Radioactive iodine uptake to the thyroid can be blocked by taking potassium iodide (KI) pills. However the statement cautions KI should not be taken unless there is a clear risk of exposure to high levels of radioactive iodine. While some radiation may be detected in the United States as a result of the nuclear reactor accident in Japan, current estimates indicate radiation levels will not be harmful to the thyroid gland or general health. If radiation levels did warrant the use of KI, the statement recommends it should be taken as directed by physicians or public health authorities until the risk for significant exposure dissipates.

ety’s membership consists of over 14,000 scientists, physicians, educators, nurses and students in more than 100 countries. Society members represent all basic, applied, and clinical interests in endocrinology. The Endocrine Society is based in Chevy Chase, Maryland. To learn more about the Society and the field of endocrinology, visit our site at www.endo-society.org.

The statement discourages individuals needlessly purchasing or hoarding of KI in the United States. Since there is not a radiation emergency in the United States or its territories, the statement does not support the ingestion of KI prophylaxis at this time. KI can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes, salivary gland inflammation, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism in a small percentage of people.

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists AACE is a professional medical organization with more than 6,500 members in the United States and 91 other countries. AACE members are physicians who specialize in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. Spirulina: A Powerhouse Health Food By Robert Navalta, M.D.

H

ave you tried spirulina cereals, shake or noodles? How about spirulina ice cream, coffee or chips?

2. As a Good Source of Healthy Pigments We are often advised by health experts that we should eat lots of fruits and vegetables. This is because it contains many antioxidants, vitamins and minerals plus the health pigments. Spirulina as a super green food also contains the following healthy pigments.

If you are giving your health some importance and you know you need to take nutritious food, you should consider spirulina. Spirulina is bluegreen algae, which is spiral-shaped under the microscope, thus the name spirulina. It is gaining more and more popularity worldwide as a very healthy and nutritious food. The World Health Organization (WHO) considered spirulina as the health food for the future. Here are the Top Three Reasons why you should consider taking spirulina as a supplement.

1. As a Natural Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement We are now in the health revolution age and more and more people understand the importance of food supplements in their diet. There are thousands of supplements in the store but most of them are synthetic. We prefer a natural supplement compared to those made in the laboratories because we consider the safety issues in the preparation of supplements. A natural supplement is of advantage because it dwells well with our body. • Spirulina is very rich in multivitamins and minerals. It provides the basic nutritional insurance against any shortage in our diet. It is more quickly available to our body and assures rapid absorption into our blood stream (4 to 5 times more rapid than animal sources such as beef, eggs or cheese). According to studies, one has to eat 6 carrots to equal the Beta Carotene content of 1 teaspoonful of Spirulina. Four tablets of Spirulina give the same amount of Vitamin B12 as 2 glasses of milk, or 2 eggs or a cup of cottage cheese. Spirulina is also known to have 2 ½ times more Vitamin B12 than liver! The following essential vitamins needed by the body for survival are present in spirulina: • Pyridoxine or vitamin B6- protects cardiac health, reduces edema and stabilizes female hormone levels • Biotin- involved in carbohydrate metabolism • Cobalamin or Vitamin B12- deficiency results in pernicious anemia, nerve degeneration, premature senility, • Pantothenic Acid- “stress” vitamin, used by 32

• Phosphorous- functions with calcium to maintain bone density.

the adrenal glands, along with cholesterol and vitamin C, to manufacture cortisone, • Folic Acid- essential to proper hemoglobin formation in red blood cells, • Inositol- reduces loss of scalp hair, • Niacin- effective cholesterol lowering agent. • Riboflavin or Vitamin B2- deficiency results in cataracts, failing vision, watery eyes and uncontrollable eczema, • Thiamine or Vitamin B1- deficiency results in weakness, cardiac damage, abdominal distention and poor oxygenation, • Tocopherol or Vitamin E- protects heart and vascular health, promotes oxygenation of cells, and retards aging. The following minerals which are very important for our body processes and metabolism are also present in spirulina: • Potassium- crucial mineral that regulates body electrolyte balance. • Calcium- important to bone and dental health, but is also involved in neural transmissions to the muscles. • Zinc- important on mental health, skin tone, prostate function and healing capacity. • Magnesium- helps assimilation of vitamin C, B vitamins and protein. • Manganese - promotes activity of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and helps stabilize blood sugar. • Selenium- retards aging, harmful oxidation and free radical formation, reduces the toxic effect of carcinogens • Iron - promotes formation of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying blood pigment found in healthy red blood cells

• Chlorophyll—This green pigment also seen in other green plants is the most visible pigment in spirulina. Chlorophyll releases ions when struck by the energy of sunlight. It increases peristaltic action and thus relieves constipation, and also normalizes the secretion of digestive acids. During World War II, the drying action of chlorophyll and its antiseptic qualities made it a common firstaid measure to prevent festering of wounds. In addition, chlorophyll soothes swelling and promotes granulation, the process that regenerates new tissue over injuries. • Phycocyanin – This is the pigment which gives spirulina its blue cast. It is related to the human pigment bilirubin, which is important to healthy liver function and digestion of amino acids. • Porphyrin - Essential to the formation of healthy red blood cells. • Carotenoids - Spirulina is a good source of carotenoids- the red-orange pigments which are antioxidants and known to have anticancer properties. Spirulina contains 4,000 mg/kg carotenoids in the form of alphacarotene, beta-carotene, xantophylls and zeaxanthin. There are lots of on-going researches revealing the benefits of spirulina to mankind. It is far better than taking synthetic vitamins with questionable content. If you are searching for a good supplement out there in the market, you can take a look at spirulina, the world’s most concentrated multivitamins and super green food. Robert R. he telephone may be an accepted part of life in the 21st century, but not for an estimated three million Californians. Most of us take using the telephone for granted. But if you have difficulty seeing, hearing, speaking, remembering, or moving, what seems to be a simple telephone call can be challenging—preventing communication with family, friends, and others. The same telecommunications technology that fuels neverending innovation has produced a wealth of specialized California Phones and devices so people with disabilities can communicate with family and friends. These California Phones are provided by the California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) free to eligible Californians. California residents are eligible for specialized California Phones if they have phone service and are certified by a licensed physician, medical doctor, or audiologist as having difficulty using a standard telephone because of difficulty seeing, hearing, speaking, remembering, or moving. There is no cost, obligation, age, or income requirement.

Once an individual qualifies for a California Phone, they can go into one of CTAP’s Service Centers throughout California or call 1-800-806-1191 to determine the most appropriate device for their requirements. Trained staff will recommend the phone that best fits a client’s needs, discuss the phone features, and provide training on how to use and personalize their California Phone. The Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program (DDTP) distributes telecommunications equipment and services that improve communication for all Californians. A program of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), DDTP provides Californians with free specialized telephone equipment and relay services through CTAP and California Relay Service (CRS), respectively. CTAP provides California Phones that amplify sound, adjust tone, light up for incoming calls, display phone conversation as text, have large buttons with raised numbers, are portable, or have speed dial phone buttons incorporating photographs. CTAP offers approximately 60 types of specialized California Phones and devices. CRS provides specially-trained Communication Assistants to relay telephone conversations between people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or are speech-disabled with those they wish to communicate with by telephone. CRS, captioned telephone, and Speech-to-Speech relay services are all offered in English and Spanish. DDTP is funded by a small surcharge that appears on all Californians’ telephone bills. The money collected pays for both CTAP and CRS. This surcharge appears on phone bills as “CA Relay Service and Communications Devices Fund.” To download an application for yourself or someone you know, to find the nearest Service Center, or for more information, visit www. eyond My Horizon: An Educational Odyssey and Combat Memoir blows through the stereotypical middleaged dropout grasping for his youth. It is a timely account for the two million warriors returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, headed to college trying to keep their sanity. In a boldly mixed-genre first-time author Claude Regis Vargo peels back the onion of severe combat PTSD stemming from living in a rock quarry cave, surviving the absolute hell-hole sieges of Khe Sanh and Hue City, Viet Nam, and going catatonic to arriving beneath the stone archway of Cornell University and beyond. It is a tale of determination, drive, and a courageous ride through life that you will not want to stop reading.

BOOK REVIEW

Free Specialized BOOK REVIEW Phones for All Eligible Californians Beyond My Horizon: An Educational Odyssey and Combat Memoir

In this engaging, compelling, and inspiring book, Claude Vargo eloquently describes the events of his life and the hard work that led to his accomplishment of transforming from a youthful academic failure to graduating summa cum laude in midlife from the Hilton College at the University of Houston in just two years while simultaneously attending Cornell.

Vargo mesmerizes the reader with tales of working at Houston’s Shamrock Hilton in his teenage years. He describes every detail with such passion that the reader can almost taste the food he serves and drinks he mixes and hear the sound of the glasses and silverware tinkling. Finally, the author focuses on the academic aspects of his life. What he emphasizes repeatedly is not his character or accomplishments but the hard effort, work, and desire for perfection it took to accomplish his goals. The author’s discussion of his educational experience is an invaluable guide on how to approach college, study effectively, take tests, present materials, and work “your academic ass off” to easily succeed in college. “Beyond My Horizon is a mustread for anyone who has a real desire to go back to college, do well in college, or finally make a change in life and pursue any lifelong dream. Vargo’s odyssey not only is a heartfelt and sincere effort to inspire the reader to go after life goals but also succeeds in making the reader believe he or she really can accomplish those goals.” – Amanda Mary Wattecamp Available at www.GetYourDamnDegree.com, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon and fine bookstores everywhere; Dog Ear Publishing, ISBN # 978-160844-565-3. PET PHOTOGRAPHY

The Heart and Soul of Your Pet By Dr. Donna, Editor

How this Fair Oaks pet photographer finds your pet’s personality in professional portraits.

H

ave you picked up a camera lately to photograph your pet? If so, you probably have discovered the pitfalls of do-it-yourself pet photography.

session, capturing the family members’ personalities is her goal, too. But sometimes something odd happens when she schedules a family photo session.

Black cats and dogs look like black blobs on the photo and the location of Blackie’s eyes and nose went is unknown. Bullet the chow won’t sit still. Rex refuses to look at the camera. Snoopy isn’t feeling well and looks sad. Hercules won’t ‘smile’. Sissy has red eyes that makes her look like a devil cat. Thumper insists on humping the furniture and occasionally drags his bum on the carpet. The photos you take of Daisy don’t show any character; all she’s doing is sitting there, looking dumb-founded. You wonder how many photos you have to take to get one excellent one.

“I always ask them if everyone is here. They look around to make sure all the people are present, but sometimes forget their beloved furry friends! A pet is a big part of a family and it’s really important for that pet to be in the photo,” she said. Why Have Pets Photographed? People have pet photography done for many reasons. “First of all, it’s fun and becomes a bonding experience between the owners and the pet. The photos mean a lot more to the owners years later when they remember the whole experience. Sometimes, friends get together and everyone brings their pet here at the same time,” she said. “They get a group discount and can still have private camera time.”

“It’s important to capture your pet’s personality in a photograph that will connect to your emotions about your pet every time you look at it, even years later, without the technical mistakes,” said Debbie Klenzman, owner of Progressive Portraits. Highly Experienced and Makes the Process Easy She’s a professional pet photographer and pet artist with 20 years of experience under her belt. Her experience includes fashion photography, production photography, portrait studios, and wedding photography in addition to painting since the age of 5. At 12 years of age, she had her own 35 mm camera. She’s won drawing contests during her career as well. In Debbie’s professional work, clients will sometimes go beyond photography and ask her to paint a portrait of their pet from a photograph. “After years in the business, I’ve developed my own style of capturing a pet’s heart and soul and created my own style of connecting with animals. There’s a whole psychology of photographing pets. Dogs can be told what to do and they do it. They’re rewarded with praise and they’re so happy about it. Cats are a different story,” she said, laughing. “Cats need to think that posing for the camera is their idea.” Every Pet Can Be Captured on Film Debbie has mastered pet photography, as evidenced by her work. And she’s also mastered the art of handling unruly dogs with far too much energy and those who are nervous because they are out of their home environment. 34

Photographing your family shots with your pets is always something that people enjoy. “Doing it before a holiday or a pet’s birthday is important, especially if you’re led by intuition. One of my clients called a few months after the photo shoot and said that her dog Max passed away and she really treasured our photo shoot.” Photographing your dog at different stages of life is also pretty important. “Pets grow up with the kids and it’s great to see your little puppy in the loving arms of your daughter and compare it to the next photo a few years later.”

“Often pets will reflect the energy of their owners. If someone comes in and is overly excited about Fluffy’s photo shoot, Fluffy takes on that energy and it takes me a little while to calm her back down,” Debbie said.

Debbie also can set the scene for those who want a dog modeling portfolio. She has a complete set of backdrops, props, lighting, and tricks to get your animals to look their best. She uses these strategies on all photo shoots and understands the technology needed to get the exact effects that you want in your photos.

Did You Forget Lassie in Your Photo? In her photos or paintings, you can clearly see how she has captured the pet’s personality. And when a family comes in for a family photo

How to Protect Your Family By Yevgen Fromer

ou do all that you can to keep your family safe. We all do. Good parents search through the Halloween candy first, add an extra serving of vegetables at dinner, and know exactly who their children are playing with. However, when that good parent puts their child on an educational website, or allows their child to say hi to Grandma on the cell phone, they could unknowingly be placing their child at risk. Both of these items and many more around the house emit electromagnetic radiation. Studies have been done that show electromagnetic radiation as being connected to things like brain tumors and other sicknesses. Researchers have found that brain tumors develop more often in the side of the head that the cellular phone is held to. So, a person who frequently uses the cell phone in their right hand is at risk for brain tumors on the right side and vice versa. A person that works at a computer all day long is at risk for receiving this radiation continuously. This radiation can actually affect the way our cells work. One research project showed that using a cell phone can allow the radiation to reach through to the center of the brain.

certain amount of area, and you can purchase one for every room of your home to protect your children and loved ones.

HOW TO PREVENT THIS RADIATION: There are a few things you can do to help protect your family from radiation. One of them is to keep your children off the cell phones. At a younger age, children are still developing and it is important that they are not continuously exposed to radiation of this nature. It may have a more troublesome affect on them than an adult. Another thing that you can do is limit their time on the computer and yours as well. If you don’t have to be on the computer all the time,

If you work on the computer, or must be on it constantly, purchase a radiation buffer. This will protect you and your family from the damaging effects of electromagnetic radiation from all of the devices in your home which might emit it. It works to even the levels of radiation, and by emitting a low pulsing that is on the same frequency as the radiation, it disrupts the radiation in a way that protects you better. It also helps your own body fight off the radiation more effectively. These products work to protect a

Take action against electromagnetic radiation in your home, at your office or any other place that you spend a lot of time. This is one of the best things you can do in order to protect your family and the ones you love. Don’t allow them to be victim to this radiation, and the effects it can have on them.

Diabetic Amputations: No Need to Suffer

W

hen someone has diabetes, they spend extra time visiting medical specialists. These visits include more frequent visits to the dentist, internist, endocrinologist, podiatrist for foot ulcers, and dermatologist for skin issues. And that’s just the beginning; many diabetics see a neurologist for peripheral neuropathy, a dietitian for diet advice, cardiologist for heart and blood vessel health, ophthalmologist for cataracts or retinal/vision disturbances, and prosthetic specialists if a limb was removed. Once health issues confront a diabetic, it can be easy to get trapped in a line of thinking that the “good days” are over. And if you are one who sometimes finds life too challenging and too disappointing at times, you have new hope from this day on. That’s because you have an advocate in Sacramento – one you never met before, and one that could change your life or even help you save it! The Pain Doesn’t Stop After the Amputation “Diabetics suffer a lot from infections, and it’s needless in many situations,” said Michael Greenhalgh, Manager of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic of Sacramento. “Insurance pays out $3 billion a year for the surgical amputation for diabetic foot wounds. That’s about $13.5 million for the Sacramento Valley. The average cost for an amputation is $45,000, and that includes the extensive staff that is needed when the operation is performed.” “Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is one-third the cost. Once you amputate, there’s still pain and suffering that occurs, and it’s at a level that you can’t even put a dollar amount on that. And then comes the disability that the amputee has for a lifetime. That’s $58 billion nationally, half for diabetic amputations, or about $800,000 per individual,” he continued. Using hyperbaric oxygen treatment in Sacramento Valley alone would save 450 cases or $380 million future disability costs each year.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment? Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is the medical use of oxygen breathed in at a level greater than atmospheric pressure. In this form of treatment, you lie down on a gurney that wheels into a pressure vessel made of steel or aluminum encased with windows made of acrylic that allow you to see out. A closed circuit television can allow technicians and medical staff outside the chamber to monitor the patient on the inside of the chamber. An intercom allows communication from inside to outside and vice versa. A television may be elevated in the room outside the chamber so the patient can stay occupied during the treatment. After the chamber is closed, the pressure is adjusted according to the needs of the patient. The oxygen content of the air inside reaches a level of 100% oxygen, far above the normal 21% of normal air. The patient quietly rests and breathes in the pure oxygen for an hour to an hour and a half. How Oxygen Treatment Helps Diabetics “Hyperbaric oxygen could save 75% of those who are facing an amputation. It’s not a treatment; it’s a cure,” Michael said. “When the pressure is increased, it drives the oxygen into the cells and triggers DNA to start growth and repair processes. This causes the regrowth of the microcirculation of the diabetic.” The microcirculation is defined as the tiny blood vessels inside organs that bring blood to the tissues. It doesn’t pertain to large arteries that transport blood to and from organs. In diabetics, the microcirculation dies, causing loss of feeling in the limbs. In some cases the microcirculation becomes clogged with calcium mineral deposits and symptoms such as numbness and tingling occur. The inability to heal is a result of disturbed microcirculation.

“The interesting part of hyperbaric oxygen treatments is that if a diabetic has a lifethreatening infection that could result in amputation, the oxygen treatment will actually heal the other limb—the one that isn’t infected—at the same time. The microcirculation in the body is restored everywhere,” Michael said.

Many Conditions Benefit from Oxygen In the U.S., there are 14 different conditions that respond well to hyperbaric oxygen treatment and covered by insurance. In China and Russia, about 80 different conditions are treated, including: • non-healing wounds in diabetic • cerebral palsy • certain types of hearing loss • inflammatory bowel disease • autism • epidural abscesses • multiple sclerosis • diabetic neuropathy • delayed radiation injury • skin grafts and flaps • osteomyelitis, infection in the bone • decompression sickness • diabetic foot ulcers • diabetic retinopathy • exceptional blood loss • gas gangrene • carbon monoxide poisoning • air embolism • crush injuries • infections that cause skin necrosis “Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are qualified treatments by all insurance companies. If the doctor knows about it, he refers his patients. In this area, Kaiser insurance pays for the 15 to 40 treatments needed in diabetics to regrow capillaries so that a diabetic doesn’t need amputation,” Michael said. “The evidence is in the SPEC scans that show the ability of the skin and tissue to heal to oxygenate itself under hyperbaric conditions.” If you’re a diabetic who has been suffering needlessly from diabetic wounds that won’t heal, it’s time to call your advocate. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic is located at 1936 Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento. Their treatments are also available to private pay clients. SARALYN BREGMAN•PHD.

GET BACK IN THE GAME:

Sport Psychology Can Help H istorically, sport psychologists focused specifically on performance issues. They functioned as a mental coach or performance consultant. The sport psychologist would implement a program of mental training and skills to assist athletes in taking performance to the next level. Until recently these services have generally been available to elite athletes.

Whether one is an elite, student, competitive recreational, or recreational athlete, developing mental skills can address issues of performance, adjustment, transitions, and relationships in order to maximize ones potential. A sport psychologist can also help to facilitate personal growth, and the overall well being of athletes regardless of age or competition/participation level.

3. The process of recovery can give way to depression, lowered self esteem, decreased motivation, and isolation. Psychological principals and mental skills can provide tools to assist in successful recovery including regaining a sense of self, increased motivation to engage in rehabilitation protocols, and ultimately a successful return to sport with confidence.

The reality is that individuals participate in sport for many different reasons and they are more than just their performance. Regardless of participation level, all athletes believe their sport is important, it enhances their life, and athletes are committed to being the best they can be. A sport psychologist can assist athletes, coaches, and family members in addressing all issues that impact not only performance but also enjoyment and participation in sport.

In my practice I take a holistic approach and address the psychological factors that influence participation and performance in sport as well as concerns that make managing the demands of sport and everyday life difficult. I aspire to give athletes tools and skills that they can utilize and apply daily in sport and life.

In my practice, I teach skills to improve focus through relaxation or mindfulness techniques. I address issues related to anxiety, recovery from poor performances, and managing anger and other strong emotions in the context of sport and life.

While enhancing performance may be the ultimate goal, there are other things to take into consideration. Besides the circumstances, situational variables, and the personal disposition of the athlete, other aspects that are important are listed below.

sport psychology Recognizes challenges athletes of all ages and participation levels encounter. Uses clinical expertise and athletic experience to help restore overall wellbeing, balance, and enjoyment of sport and life in general.

1. Performance concerns in the context of the athlete’s entire life. Once identified, appropriate tools and mental skills can be used. 2. Sport injury and the emotional/ psychological repercussions. Injury is an inherent risk with sport participation but its emotional and psychological impact can be at best challenging. The emotional fallout can even impair one’s ability to engage in the very actions that promote successful recovery.

4. Sport and career termination, Athletes may benefit from help modifying or rethinking goals when they can no longer engage in a specific sport or activity. 5. Interpersonal difficulties in sport are not uncommon. One can learn techniques to communicate effectively with coaches, teammates, and parents. Being able to engage in open and effective communication can help to improve performance, reach goals, and increase enjoyment in sport. 6. Some issues encountered by athletes that may benefit from the assistance of a sport psychologist include: Motivation, Anxiety/Depression, Injury recovery, Anger management, Adjustment difficulties (interpersonal, competitive level, student athletes, etc.), Performance enhancement, Career transitions, Substance abuse, Time management and Athletic burnout In my practice I work with the whole athlete promoting continued discovery and/or rediscovery of the joy of sport and fitness activities. young man was recently in the news after taping a ‘Kick Me’ sign on a classmate. The nine year old bully will get more attention than he wants, but what about the victim? Unfortunately, the potential for wearing that ‘Kick-me’ sign is always there. You can remove the ‘signs’ that say I will be a victim. I won’t be the first to suggest how. Don’t take that disrespect anymore. While the nine year old on the national news will likely get a lesson on respect, how many other bullies won’t? Charles Atlas advertised his strength training in magazines by showing a guy on the beach with his girl —getting sand kicked in his face! That was then and this is now. How will your future be different? The first step in any change is admitting you may have a problem. Easy, that’s not a bad thing because almost every problem has a solution. You just have to know you should be looking for it. By changing your body language you can change the way you feel, and most importantly, how others respond to you. This can be done several ways:

A positive outcome stems from having a positive outlook. Like in Star Wars, Yoda advises the Jedi, don’t think about trying. Do. Think about success at doing whatever you attempt, a self programming method that is often described by athletes as ‘visualizing’ the routine or play to come up a winner. That is programming for success. Learn from others how they removed the ‘Kick-me’ sign from their lives. If you surround yourself

4. Engage in some form of physical exercise, or active play. Ride a bike, walk a mile, swim a lap or play ball and you’ll notice how good simple physical activity makes the body feel. 5. Enroll in a martial arts class. Combining mind, body and spirit in physical training will help improve fitness, health and provides self defense training enhancing confidence, courage and raising respect for oneself and others.

Have YOU Taped a “Kick Me” Sign on Your Back?

More than 40 years of teaching martial arts has taught me that YOU already know YOU are the only one who can make a change. Be true to yourself, and decide to change. Then I can help you discover a new way to create wellbeing, fitness, confidence and greater respect for yourself and others. You can and will walk with confidence that anyone can see. Smile, and let people know you are confident. It’s the ‘universal greeting’.
