NATURAL HEALING

AROMATHERAPY & ESSENTIAL OILS: HOW THEY WORK By Anadi Taylor

A

romatherapy is a holistic alternative medicine that uses plant extracts, known as essential oils, to alter a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function or health. Aromatherapy literally means “treatment using scents”. The essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses and seeds with distinctive therapeutic, psychological, and physiological properties that improve health and prevent illness. There are about 150 essential oils. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties; some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antidepressant and expectorant. Other properties of the essential oils that are taken advantage of in aromatherapy are stimulation, relaxation, digestion improvement, and their diuretic properties. To get the maximum benefit from essential oils, they should be made from natural, pure, raw materials. Synthetically made oils do not work.

cold, the flu and nasal congestion that may be due to allergies using Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Roman Chamomile and Peppermint. Oral hygiene Aromatherapy can be used as a mouthwash for bad breath using Myrrh; or for toothaches using Cloves. Aches and pains Those suffering from headaches can use Peppermint and Rosemary; those with migraines, arthritis and joint pains can use Anise, Black pepper, Marjoram and Ginger. For backaches a massage with essential oils added to the massage oils is very effective.

How Aromatherapy Works We, as human beings, have the capacity to distinguish 10,000 different smells. These smells enter through cilia, the fine hairs lining the nose, to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls our moods, emotions, memory and learning. It can be shown by measuring brain wave frequencies that different smells affect us in a multitude of ways. An example of this would be the smell of lavender that increases alpha waves in the back of the head associated with relaxation. Another example would be the fragrance of Jasmine that increases beta waves in the front of the head associated with a more alert state.

Where did Aromatherapy Originate? Aromatherapy has been practiced since ancient times. The actual date aromatherapy was first introduced is much disputed. Most experts claim that the ancient Egyptians were the first to practice aromatherapy. The ancient Egyptians recognized the physical and spiritual properties of these oils and used them in their daily lives. Egyptians used oils in their mummification procedures and were aware of the healing properties of many of these oils. The priests became “healers” mixing and prescribing medicinal potions. Aromatic plants and essential oils were used in biblical times. Think of the gifts brought to the newborn. Plant oils are mentioned several times in the Bible. 4

During the 15th century people in Europe began using essential oils to disguise their body odors and to ward off sickness. The French chemist Dr. René-Maurice Gattefossé is considered the “father” of modern day aromatherapy. Gattefosse was the first to use the term “aromatherapy” in 1928. The French physician Dr.Jean Valnet was very impressed with Gattefossé’s findings and began using essential oils to treat injuries during World War II. Marguerite Maury, an Austrian biochemist, studied the rejuvenating powers and cosmetic uses of essential oils. These three people reintroduced aromatherapy in the 20th century.

What Can Aromatherapy be Used For? Skin treatments Aromatherapy can be used for acne using Rosemary and Geranium; eczema using Chamomile; dry or chapped skin using Rose, Lavender and Neroli. For oily skin, insect bites, athlete’s foot and fungal infections, try Tea Tree. Respiratory ailments Aromatherapy can be used for respiratory ailments such as Sinusitis using Eucalyptus, Lavender, Thyme, and Peppermint and for bronchitis, coughs, sore throats, the common

Mental health Aromatherapy is very effective for stress and fatigue relief using Grapefruit or as an antidepressant using Basil, Chamomile, Grapefruit, Rose or Ylang Ylang. For grief, Rose and Marjoram are very effective. Aromatherapy can be calming using Chamomiles. The relaxing effect of Lavender, Chamomile and Neroli are especially effective for those troubled with insomnia. Frankincense is wonderful for meditation, Rosemary is used to enhancing memory and some people feel it can be an aphrodisiac. It can give relief to women troubled with PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and can aid digestion. Old age Nursing homes and medical facilities are using Aromatherapy to treat Alzheimer’s disease with Bergamot and Lavender. Other aging related health concerns such as memory problems can be treated with Rosemary; agitation with Bergamot, Lavender and Ylang Ylang; and nervous legs using Bergamot and Lavender.

Where is Aromatherapy Practiced? Aromatherapy is practiced all over the world by Homeopathic, Ayurvedic, Chinese medicine, Herbal medicine and Naturopathy practitioners. It can be used as a treatment in itself or to compliment more “traditional” medicines. It is always advised to consult a professionally trained therapist before using essential oils. Aromatherapy - The Science of Scent By Idaline Hall

It’s based on this simple premise: We all have a very strong sense of smell, and smell can trigger reactions in the brain. It’s not so much that a specific oil will relax or stimulate you as much as the aroma of a certain oil will help cause the brain to do it internally. Unlike the other senses, which pass through several regions of the brain first, a whiff of fragrance travels from the olfactory track directly to the response center, leading researchers to conclude that smell has the most ability of all the senses to evoke an emotional response. Over the centuries, people have learned what smells help trigger the body’s own defenses and self-healing systems—what smells help the body relax, stimulate, arouse or heal itself. There’s an evolutionary component to aromatherapy, too. Mammals are constantly enticed by fruit and flowers—their scent lets us know they’re ready to be eaten. We find their scents pleasing because we must eat them to survive. Aromatherapy is the world’s gentlest form of medicine. It also happens to be of the oldest. It started more than 4,000 years ago, and was practiced in ancient Egypt, India, Greece and throughout the Arab countries. This science of scents involves the use of essential oils—including bay, jasmine, chamomile and sandalwood—made by boiling down certain plants, roots, flowers and leaves. Modern science has discovered that, aside from producing powerful aromas that trigger the brain to perform certain actions, a number of the essential oils have definite antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Most libraries and health food stores have numerous books about the properties of various oils, how to use them and how much of each to use. Oils can be mixed in different ways, and many health food stores sell them as pre-blended oil compounds. Keep in mind that the way you use the oils will have a major impact on how effective they are. For example, massages can be very calming and relaxing all by themselves, but add an essential oil that promotes relaxation and the entire experience is enhanced. Likewise, a warm bath can soothe an aching body and an anxious mind. Drop in some lavender, ylang-ylang and rose absolute oil and your bath becomes a spa. To retain the quality of your essential oils, buy small bottles. Air trapped in bottles can accelerate the deterioration of oils. For more useful Health Tips visit: www. HealthQuickTips.com. H&F

Unfortunately, once the upper neck misaligns the only way to get it re-aligned again is by taking very specific x-rays of the upper neck to determine the exact direction the vertebrae are misaligned. Then a formula for correction is calculated mathematically. After correction, a post-x-ray must be compared to the initial x-ray to determine if a good correction was made. The formula may need to be re-calculated to fine tune the adjustment based on the information obtained from the post-x-ray. The general term for this type of precise correction is Upper Cervical. This is simply the only way to consistently and reliably re-align the upper neck. Once a good correction has been made the patient must be monitored to make sure the correction is holding. The longer the correction holds, the greater chance the patient will finally have a permanent solution to their nagging back pain.

When the upper neck misaligns the head begins to tilt. In an effort to keep the eyes level the brain will send signals to the postural muscles along the spine to compensate by pulling the spine into a new position, which will keep the eyes level. Unfortunately, this new position is not a biomechanically correct position. The muscles along the spine are more contracted on one side of the spine then the other. This leads to increased stress on the joints, muscles, nerves, and ligaments of the spine, which eventually leads to chronic back pain. Most treatments for back pain focus on treating the area of pain, which may feel good temporarily but does not last because the spine is still compensating for what is going on in the upper neck.

Q: My 6-year-old daughter has been very upset every time she is not with me. It’s like she has a fear that I’m not coming back. Is there anything I can do to help with this issue? Worried Wendy

Q: Recently a friend and I went shopping together and I loved this one dress, but felt it was too much money. She loved it too and decided to buy it for me as a gift. Needless to say I was thrilled with her generosity.

A: Dear Worried Wendy, When the fact that you are not being present interferes with school or other activities, it is possible yourthe child has separation anxiety. Many children develop what they call separation anxiety when they are faced with not having one or both their parents present. Depending on the situation professional help may be required, but there are also things a parent can do to help.

After a couple of days she called to borrow the dress stating since it was expensive, and she paid for it, she thought we could share it. I’ve not worn it yet and I’m not sure what to do, should I pay half the cost? Doubting Darlene

Some steps you can take to help her with this issue are as follows: ÝÛÛGjY[la[]Ûk]hYjYlagf Leave your child with a caregiver for brief periods and tell her when you will be back to pick her up. Even though she may be a little young to understand time, make sure you are back aton the time you stated. This will help her develop a sense of security for your return. ÝÛÛ;]n]dghÛYÛ _gg\Zq]ÛgjÛk]]ÛqgmÛdYl]j Ûjgmlaf] Routines are reassuring and can help your child feel secure about your return. ÝÛÛ:j]Yl]Û^YeadaYjÛkmjjgmf\af_kÛo`]fÛhgkkaZd] Perhaps have the caretaker come to your house the first time and the second time take your daughter to the caretaker’s location. A: Dear Doubting Darlene, Seems that your friend really bought the dress for herself, but needed to justify the expense by saying she was buying it for you. A gift is something that requiresd nowithout compensation or having to sharinge it. There are two choices you have: One: You can give her the dress. Two: Return the dress and give her the money back. Gifts with strings attached are not really gifts at all. Q: I My challenge always comes down to fitting in with my peers. Because academically I exceed the standards and have gained my Ph.D. long before the normal time frame, my friends always make jokes about me being the ‘brain child’ and don’t comprehend any of my discussions. I long for intellectual conversations. Should I find new friends or should I just not discuss my interests with my friends and only talk about what they enjoy? Brainy Brenda A: Dear Brainy Brenda, Tell her the truth. It is not about her not feeling comfortable around your new friends; it is about you not feeling comfortable around her. Tell her you only want friends who are over weight and do not remind you of the great figure you once had. Tell her you would rather end the friendship than to be upstaged by her at your own wedding. Tell her she deserves a better friend. It may be time to take a deeper look at your own insecurity. You may be voluptuous but you are far from grown-up. hen it’s black out it is definitely black out. I often think why it is that whenever I happen to lose power, it occurs on the darkest of nights with no moonlight whatsoever? Well, all that shows is the necessity of having a well equipped power outage Survival kit.

cranking radio-clock but we try to maintain a flashlight or lantern in every room of our home. This will prevent accidental falls in the dark

As usual your power outage kit must be ready to deploy with you should the need arise therefore I have found it best to assemble my kit within a backpack of some sort. Hanging your kit on a door hook behind the kitchen door or a bedroom door is a smart trick and assures that it is readily available in the dark when needed.

5. Several 6 to 12 hour light sticks are useful for keeping in your black out kit also.

11. Store up on one gallon of water per person along with a supply of paper cups. A neat little trick is to store several containers of clean water in your freezer. In case you lose power to help to keep your food cold and as it melts you can use it as drinking water.

1. A battery operated or hand cranked radio complete with extra batteries.

12. You should also consider an alternate cooking source such as a BBQ grill or a small propane camping stove. I keep both available.

2. A Clock that operates on battery power. Both the hand cranked radio and a clock can be combined in one unit. However, sometimes the clock loses its time when the battery is weak so I highly advise keeping a battery clock handy. 3. Now this next item is very important. Keep a non-cordless telephone in your power outage bag to connect directly to the telephone line. Portable telephones will not function when you have no power available. I also maintain a cell phone however needless to say the numbers are different so I try to maintain both on hand for emergencies. 4. You can never have enough lanterns or flashlights along with their associated extra batteries. This is also a function of my CELEBRATING

9. Generators can be useful but do take appropriate precautions in regards to proper ventilation. The preferred method is to have your generator outside connected to an indoor power receptacle specifically for the generator. 10. Keep paper products available as well as a manual can opener.

Items to keep in the kit would include:

10

8. If you or a family member happens to be on any sort of medical equipment, ensure that you have an alternate means of power for it. I always have small portable power units that can easily be carried around. Should it require refrigeration maintain a small cooler with ice packs in it. The breakable ice packs are great for this. I also maintain a DC operated cooler for this purpose if needed. Keep extra medications in the event that pharmacies do not have back up power and are not working.

They are a lot of fun for the kids. 6. A digital quick response food thermometer is a useful addition to your kit. Perishable food temperatures should not reach above 40 degrees for more then a 2-hour period. Use this thermometer to periodically check the internal temperature of the food for harmful bacteria conditions. 7. We keep several candles available in the kit; however, we use them strictly in a dire emergency because of the fire hazard associated with them. Usually we prefer the battery flashlights and lanterns. A quick note on fire safety is to ensure that all your smoke and fire detectors have a battery backup.

13. Should heat be necessary always maintain extra means of heat such as blankets, fireplace or heat source. We generally keep extra blankets readily available as well as a kerosene heater for use if the main heating system fails to operate due to the lack of electricity. Conclude your pack with several personal items that you and your family members consider essential. Keep in mind if you have a Bug out vehicle that is equipped with people items for emergencies you could easily move to it temporarily. Campers and motor homes are especially useful in emergency black outs. For more information relating to survival visit us at www.survival-training.info. H&F

More and more manufacturers are starting to advertise these seed vaults as a “must have” disaster and emergency survival items, and I believe they should find their place in your home emergency gear. Survival Seed Bank is a kit that has anywhere from 15 to 30 different vegetable varieties of open pollinated or non-hybrid seeds, usually packed into resistant and wellsealed containers (made of plastic or other long lasting and durable material). These vaults contain thousands of seeds of different heirloom varieties. Seeds need to be open pollinated and non-hybrid, which insures not only hardiness and nutritional value, but allows the harvesting of seeds for the next year crop. Generally, hybrids cannot be harvested and planted the following year, so hybrid varieties are not included in any of the survival seed bank kits.

Dear Mitch, close friend of mine first dated this guy for 5 years, and she realized that while he’s very financially secure, he’s very insecure emotionally. If she had any relationship with any other males for any reason, even at work or in a group setting, it sets him off. He also throws fits to control the kind of clothing she wears. She was confused by his behaviors, and they got into several arguments about this, but he would ask for forgiveness and she would take him back. This guy is a really good talker who can convince anyone of anything (serves him well in business). So, she married him and for few weeks he was treating her very nicely, but later he made her life a living hell.

choice to not live with abuse. Keep this number for Sacramento area services: 916.920.2952.

He is still the same. And, he’s taken up insulting her and calling her names, even in front of people! When my friend confronts her husband about his controlling behaviors, he simply ignores her. She’s thought of leaving, but he threatens her, saying he will kill himself if she does that. She is very confused and I can’t really do anything to help her because she loves him so much and she’s so scared that he might hurt himself. Feeling Helpless Granite Bay, CA Hey Helpless, sure wish this letter had come from your friend. That would mean she sees a problem worthy of reaching out for help. Sadly, your friend is in an extremely emotionally abusive relationship. And, it appears she’s so heavily engaged in the dynamics that she’s not getting out anytime soon, and her husband apparently has little or no awareness that he’s an abusive jerk that is destroying your friend.

Acknowledge the Abuse: Yes, this IS ABUSE. The physical abuse that so often gets primary attention is frequently the least damaging abuse. This man demeaning nature and degradation of your friend is horrific! No human being deserves to be treated in a manner that is not respectful or honoring, no matter what your friend may or may not have done.

So, the primary thing for you to know and accept is this: You and everyone else in the world can love and care for someone like your friend. For anything to change, SHE has to choose change. MEANWHILE, you can do a few things: Don’t Judge/Don’t Join: Get and stay grounded—a powerful place to remain for your friend. Stepping into her story too emotionally only contributes to the enduring pattern and dynamics. I’m not saying totally emotionally distance from her. I am saying if you can offer her one person who doesn’t get totally wrapped into the drama, that’s one person who is waiting for the drama to die. Stand for Her Greatest Potential: Visualize a much more positive, happy life for your friend. Keep that in mind, and ignore all of those (natural) visualizations of a horrible future for her. Never allow yourself to drop into negative thinking about her, or about her potential for getting past this relationship and healing. Recognize Your Place: You will never know the entire story. Sometimes, what appears as reality is a well-crafted lie perpetuated by a wounded person. Your letter suggests you’ve known your friend a long time. Thus, here’s what appears to me: A. You might know her well enough to be able to assess how much of what she tells you is the truth. B. You’ve been able to witness this long relationship enough to be aware of what is truly taking place. What is your place as her friend? Hopefully, to stand for a much better life. Meanwhile, remember she has to choose change for change to happen. Definitely let your friend know that you don’t respect her husband’s treatment of her, and do let her know that you hope one day that she’ll choose to make a change. There’s something your friend is getting out of the relationship, or she wouldn’t stay. Also, her threats to kill himself are purely evil manipulation. He’s a narcissist; he’s scared to death to be hurt. Congratulations on caring enough to write for your friend. HEALTHY GARDENING

How to Properly Cultivate Okra By Kenny Leones

O

kra offers a lot of health benefits aside from the fact that they are a good crop to grow especially in warm climates. By using Okra seedlings, you can shorten the waiting time for the plant to grow to three weeks from the usual waiting time. As long as the plant’s seedlings are treated with care, they can be placed directly into your garden or into big pots at start of the summer season.

Gardening enthusiasts value okra for its durability to thrive in extreme heat, but to ensure the crops’ excellent growth, water it at least a week. The growth of the crop is slow but they will develop faster once the summer season sets in. Aside from acquiring additional weight, the leaves of the plant will grow bigger and produce flowers followed by pods.

Dealing With Problems Frost is the main enemy of okra plant and affected crops may acquire soil-related diseases like verticillium wilts. Another serious problem that can affect the plan is root knot nematode. Aphids, beetles, corn earworms and other pests can also be a big problem for your plants.

Planting and Caring For Okra Pick the area that receives a lot of sunlight for your crop and plant it until the weather is relatively warm. Generally, plants thrive in a sixty degrees temperature during night and eighty-five degrees temperature during morning.

Properly Harvesting and Storing Okra

In the northern portion of the world, gardening enthusiasts wait until the month of June to plant the crop since Okra pods develop within two months. The plant will grow best in a land that contains a 6.5 to seven neutral ph. Mixed in different kinds of organic matter in your plot since it

will benefit the okra plant. If your garden soil is not good enough for the crop, you can place fertilizer in it in 4-6-6 proportions or you can follow the recommended proportion on the fertilizer bag. The seedlings of okra possess taproots that are not easily damaged. Place an adequate amount of H20 in your seedlings for about 1 hour before transferring them into the plot. Carefully cut the seedlings’ sides and lower portion of their containers and place them in a 1-½ inch hole in the ground. Water the seedlings if the weather is too dry.

A dry weather helps okra pods to grow quickly so you have to keep an eye on the crops once it begins producing the vegetable itself. The pod can mature in two to three days. It will appear at the lower portion of the crop so expect to harvest the fruits of your hard work by the end of the waiting period. The ideal size for pods are two to four inches long. Do not leave it too long on the okra plant since it will lose its freshness and it will also affect the productivity of the crop. Remember to wear gloves and a long-sleeved garment when taking out the pods since your hands might get irritated from the hairs and use shears to cut it with a small stem still attached to it. In areas with warmer temperature, okra plants can grow as much as six to eight ft. tall. You also have to remember that this crop will bear pods again and again after you have cut it every two days so you will have a steady supply of this vegetable crop. Please go to www.iaskd.com/how-to-grow-okra. html and www.ihowd.com/how-to-grow-okra if you want to know more about how to grow okra or okra in general. H&F

T

o grow your own corn you are going to need rich, fertile soil and will need to add compost or manure to it to ensure the corn gets enough nutrients.

When to Plant Corn

Corn will grow best during summer, as it prefers warm weather. Try to plant your corn about 14 days before the last frost and to stop your various varieties of corn form cross-pollinating each other, stagger your plantings about a week apart. This will also make harvesting a lot easier as the corn will not be ready all at the same time.

Where to Plant Corn

Plant your corn in side-by-side rows with

at least four rows of corn in one spot to ensure that there is good pollination. Corn needs to have full sun and also bear in mind that if you have other vegetables in your garden that corn will grow taller than most of these which means that your other vegetables might be shaded by the corn which will inhibit their growth. Planting corn on the east or north side of your garden normally solves this problem. Corn takes up quite a bit of space in your garden so it will take a little planning before you start to plant corn. Rich soil with good drainage such as sandy loam is ideal for planting corn. If you do not have sandy loam, remedy this by

adding plenty of compost to your soil prior to planting corn. For the best soil pH for growing corn, your soil needs to measure about 6.8 on the pH scale.

How to Plant Corn

If this is the first time you will attempt to grow corn you will need to ideally turn the soil during in autumn so that you can plant your corn during spring. You can however, turn the soil and plant the corn in spring and end up with a fairly good harvest. If you have grown corn before, do not plant it in the same spot as the previous year as this can encourage pest and disease problems to recur. Corn is also a heavier feeder and takes a lot of nutrients out of the soil. By rotating your planting spots you will give your soil a chance to recover. The seeds should ideally be planted in a seedbed, which is 8 to 10 inches deep.

A GUIDE TO GROWING CORN

How to Fertilize Your Corn

The Indians plant a kernel of corn on top of a dead fish and while most people think that this is a myth the nitrogen in decaying fish actually provides the corn with the food it needs to grow. This does not mean that you will have to go and buy a bulk load of fish for your corn. Rather provide it with a steady supply of good organic fertilizer like alfalfa meal or dried animal dung during the growth period and your corn will be just as tasty as the ones that were planted with the fish. As you work to achieve healthy eating habits, you will find that you have more energy and feel better everyday. It is important to create the right habits if you want longterm success! ANGER DISORDERS: WHAT ARE THEY ALL ABOUT? By Jess Wourte

A

nger disorders are really a problem in the 21st century. As a race of beings capable of reason, humanity is essentially fragile and it is vulnerable to the effects of emotion. For each type of emotion, the person ends up struggling with it since emotion itself can seriously impact his or her ability to think reasonably. One of the more notable emotions know to man is anger, which is directly related to the person’s psychological interpretation of having been denied, wronged or offended, and in many cases anger results in retaliation (which commonly involves violence or some form of danger). Under this type of emotion is the condition called anger disorder (also identified as Intermittent Explosive Disorder or IED), which is defined as the inability on the part of the person to control his or her anger. People suffering from anger disorders often struggle to moderate or calm themselves down, and in many cases they tend to have bouts of exploding rage that involves an event (example: an incident) which triggers it.

16

feels tired most of the time (which is the result of the holding the anger down deep inside the body), tends to get sick rather easily when compared to normal people, and from time to time he or she will experience bouts of depression or anger disorders. Other anger disorders include anger addiction, which happens when bouts of anger outburst occur on a repetitive cycle. In many cases the sufferer can feel some sort of relief when the anger has been unleashed. Lastly, there is also the occasional anger outburst in which the sufferer gets angry on a moderately regular frequency and the disorder involves aggressive gesturing (examples: pointing fingers, cold stares at other people, slamming the door instead of knocking gently), verbal abuse (calling people names, criticizing others even if there is no justification for it, and accusing people of wrongdoing), and violent reactions to others (yelling at friends, family members and associates).

There are several types of anger disorders in existence, and each of them has its own details and differences from each other. For one, there is passive-aggressive behavior, which is connected to the sufferer’s struggle to suppress the anger from inside. This behavior always comes out unconsciously and is popularly called “sideways anger”. Some examples of this particular disorder involve being sarcastic or critical towards the other person, or asking a question that can be interpreted as a statement.

All in all, the disorders of anger are signs of pathologically aggressive, violent and even self-destructive behavior on the part of the sufferer. To cure the sufferer in the most humane manner, it is best to have him or her learn anger management techniques. In these classes, other sufferers gather under the coordination of an expert who will do what is necessary to reach deep inside each of them and tackle the very inner triggers of anger. The process will take time and the sufferer will struggle to open up but in many cases, anger management works. Know this: anger disorders can be healed.

There is also total anger suppression, which involves the sufferer not getting angry mentally but his or her body does not go along with what’s inside the mind. The sufferer often

Why Haven’t People With Shoulder Pain Been Told These Facts? If you’re over the age of 30 and have rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder, or arthritis, there is hope. A local doctor is helping patients increase shoulder strength, improve motion, and eliminate shoulder pain. Finally, you can be pain free again – even if you’ve got the most excruciating shoulder pain you have ever felt. medications available are quite addicting and have drastic side effects. Why Surgery May Not Be Your Only Option.

Do you have difficulty just washing your hair or even scratching your back? Have you had to give up golf because of your shoulder pain? Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your shoulder hurts and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Sandy Bell, owner of Bell Family Chiropractic Center. Over the past several years since I’ve been in practice, I’ve seen hundreds of people with shoulder pain, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff problems leave the office pain free. If you are suffering from any of these problems, this shoulder treatment protocol may completely eliminate all the pain. Pain Pills Could Be Making Your

Frozen shoulder – one of the worst maladies known to man (and women!) Adhesive capsulitis Rotator cuff injuries Arthritis Bursitis Tendonitis Muscle weakness Sharp, radiating pain Numbness and tingling

I certainly can't say for sure until I meet you, but surgery may not be your only option. If you go through with surgery, you’re looking at time off from work, weeks to months of rehab, and quite a bit of expense. Why not exhaust all natural, noninvasive options before considering more drastic measures? Shoulder Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’ No question… if you are having shoulder pain then something is wrong. It’s not normal ageing to hurt all the time. Pain in your shoulder isn’t just a ‘sign of old age’, if that was true all 360 joints in your body would hurt since you’re whole body is the same age. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Finding the problem and fixing it has got to be a top priority! Have A Doctor Evaluate Your Shoulder For Only $37 Just call before June 17th and here’s what you’ll get…

An in-depth consultation about your shoulder where I will listen…really listen.

A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem.

A full set of specialized computerized nerve tests to look for structural and muscular imbalances (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100).

Shoulder Worse If you’re taking pain pills for your shoulder, you are likely making your problem worse. Pain pills, even over-the-counter medications, just mask the problem, and don’t fix your shoulder. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you to take it easy. If you mask the pain with pills, you are likely to do things that can prevent your shoulder from healing – maybe even damage it further. Not to mention many of the pain

Develop a schedule. It is important to have a weekly routine of workouts that you are comfortable with and that fit into your lifestyle. You will need to decide which days are best to do which workouts. Having a regular weekly plan helps you develop consistency and establish your training plan. In order to improve rapidly, it is recommended that you complete 3 swims, 3 bikes, and 3 run workouts each week. In addition,

we recommend that you also complete 2-3 strength workouts each week. HAVE A FOCUS FOR EACH WORKOUT. If you are doing three run workouts each week, we recommend the following: Base run (medium distance/medium intensity; works on developing your aerobic base/ base fitness), Tempo run (short-medium distance/high intensity; this is a faster

and harder workout; hills, sprints, etc.), and Endurance run (long distance/low intensity; build stamina and endurance). Apply these strategies all of your workouts and you will get more out of every workout hour!

Bringing Out

Your Inner Radiance with

Bikram Yoga By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret.), Editor

B

y doing yoga in a room with the temperature at 110 degrees Fahrenheit, you develop stamina and the ability to persist. This stamina walks out of the room with you into your life,” said Sandy McCauley, co-owner of Yoga Loka, located at 4820 Folsom Boulevard in Sacramento. The type of yoga she’s referring to is called Bikram yoga, a type of yoga that began in the early 1970s. The heat of the room temperature acts as a vasodilator, opening up the circulatory system, providing more blood flow and energy to the muscles and lungs. These yoga classes are 90 minutes long and consist of a set of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises.

The master pose triangle creates 4 triangles and uses all the bodies joints and muscles.

Why Bikram Yoga is So Effective

“When you work out with Bikram yoga, you work your body at the cellular level,” said Bill McCauley, Sandy’s husband and co-owner. “First of all, the initial breathing exercise stimulates oxygenation of the body. Oxygen is a healer.” “Next, you start out with the first posture that stimulates the central nervous system, then the next exercise focuses on stimulating the muscles of the legs. These help blood from the veins return to the heart. The next exercise strengthens major joints of the body, improving flexibility and organs. When the organs receive more blood flow, they begin to heal themselves. What I love about Bikram is that every posture prepares the body for the next posture. It’s a logical progression,” Bill continued. Because of this, Bill believes strongly that yoga is one of the answers we need for solving the health crisis in America. And he’s not alone. During the course of Bill

and Sandy’s yoga teaching career, they’ve influenced about 250,000 people and proven to them how health improvement occurs. But it’s not just physical health that this type of yoga helps create. “When the body operates at peak efficiency, that opens the mind and the spiritual realm, too,” Bill said. His wife agrees. “It can be a spiritual event to do Bikram yoga, and we provide a very safe, loving place to do it. I call it ‘spiritual’ because when you begin working your muscles and joints, you release more and more tension until your body falls back into its natural condition – radiance itself – and you receive more and more oxygen into the cells. The Bikram yoga process awakens radiance in you, which is your birthright.” “When you release resistance, frequency increases, whether it’s a fan, a motor, or a human body. When your frequency is increased, you become more human…Yoga is like do-it-yourself bodywork. You’re strengthening your body by moving your own weight.

You don’t need dumbbells,” Bill said. When our muscles or our mind holds onto mental or physical resistance, the muscles can’t take in oxygen and lactic acid deposits are created. This causes pain in the muscles and interferes with blood flow as well.

Real Healing, Not Healing from a Bottle of Pills

Releasing the pose lets in a rush of healing blood to the organ.

Types of Classes at Yoga Loka

“Drugs can’t release that build up of lactic acid. Healing has to be organic, not chemical,” Bill said.

The classes they offer in their studio are offered seven days a week, four times a day.

Both Bill and Sandy had back pain for long periods in their lives before starting yoga. Bill’s back pain from the construction industry lasted until he was 52 years old, but 6 months of yoga eliminated it. For Sandy, only three months of yoga erased her back pain, and at the 1-year mark, she felt fantastic, also because she lost 50 pounds. “I couldn’t stop talking about yoga and starting teaching it back in the 1990s,” she said. “Sharing it is like telling people about the best kind of natural medication there is, and I feel very fortunate.”

But don’t expect ordinary strucRetired police officer Joe Pane. tured classes that involve work. The couple and their instructors do what they can to make the classes fun. “What’s important is that you just be happy doing yoga,” Bill said. “Most people celebrate their happiness by doing things that destroy their body. Celebrations should be a very happy occasion and Bikram yoga is a reason for a celebration. Smiling relaxes 100 muscles in the body. We want you to smile and have a good time in the classes.”

Bill started his education at the University of San Francisco in pre-med because of his strong interests in neurology, endocrinology and nutrition but decided he preferred alternative forms of medicine. He wanted to take responsibility for his own body instead of passing the responsibility on to drugs and says that his intuition knew there was something better. “Looking back, I see how yoga made my body feel better and better. I’ve stayed younger because of it and don’t feel much older than what I felt like at age 25,” he said.

Bill does have some recommendations for those who come to his studio. “Just appreciate your body and the wonderful healing capacity that it has. By giving your body some impetus and making it work properly, in coordination with the breath, healing results. The breath is the moving force. It’s the most important thing we do in life. Breathing properly, exercising properly and relaxing properly is one of the best things you can do for your body! And it all happens here.”

Part of the reason why yoga works is that when you put your body in a pose, the circulation to the corresponding organ is slowed down.

For more information see their website at www.yogaloka.net. Come in for an introductory offer of 10 consecutive days of unlimited yoga for only $25. Bring a friend and receive an extra free day from Bill and Sandy. H&F

HOW MEDICAL CANNABIS DECREASES INFLAMMATION

Type 1 receptors, CB1 receptors, are found in the brainstem where regulation of the lung and heart occurs; in the cerebellum (controls muscle movement); in the hippocampus (coordinates your emotional responses to what’s happening and memory; and in the reproductive system.

Another cannabinoid, called ajulemic acid, is synthesized in the laboratory. When taken orally, ajulemic acid suppresses joint inflammation and tissue injury in rats with arthritis. And when ajulemic acid was tested on human blood cells and synovial cells in the test tube, this interesting compound increased the production of an eicosanoid that resolves inflammation.

Type 2 receptors, CB2 receptors, are found mostly in the immune system cells in the spleen, in nerves that innervate the muscles of your arms and legs, and in the cerebellum. Type 2 receptors are thought to be responsible for anti inflammatory effects and other therapeutic effects of medical cannabis. Several Active Ingredients Found in the Plant: Cannabis is known for its active ingredient THC. This cannabinoid interacts with the CB1 receptors and has been found to reduce inflammation of the lungs in mice and reduce development of hardening of the arteries. Another active ingredient in cannabis is called cannabidiol, which reduces joint inflammation in arthritis and edema in animal studies. Taken orally, cannabidiol reduces constriction of the sciatic nerve and pain from inflammation in rats. Other studies show it reduces intestinal inflammation and can suppress the production of a cytokine chemical found in the body called TNF alpha, which causes inflammation.

Medications can contain natural or synthetic cannabinoids or cannabinoid analogs. Some examples include: s $RONABINOL -ARINOL AN APPETITE STIMULANT ANALGESIC s .ABILONE #ESAMET AN ANALOG OF -ARINOL s 3ATIVEX A CANNABINOID EXTRACT ORAL SPRAY WITH 4(# AND OTHER cannabinoids used for neuropathic pain and spasticity in 22 countries s 2IMONABANT 32 A SMOKING CESSATION DRUG AND AN ANTI obesity drug named Aomplia. Caryophyllene, found in abundant amounts in Cannabis oil, works through the cannabinoid receptors, especially CB2 and has antiinflammatory activity.

Cannabidiol suppresses an enzyme that causes an end result of an increase in yet another cannabinoid, which is anti inflammatory. But it also checks inflammation caused by high glucose levels.

he marijuana plant is loaded with cannabinoids 85 have been found to date. They interact with the cannabinoid receptors in the body. To understand how medical cannabis works, you must know about the two types of cannabinoid receptors in the body.

The cannabis plant holds much promise for not only decreasing inflammation but also assisting in numerous other activities in the body. H&F

YOGA

Understanding the Different Types of Yoga By Suzanne Morrison

Y

oga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places holding Yoga classes is on the increase and there is a plethora of different types of Yoga. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more, it can be easy to get confused. Here’s the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you. Hatha Yoga: in Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) “Ha” means “sun”

and “tha” means “moon”. This type of Yoga is relatively slow-paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don’t know any of the asanas (poses). Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit. Ashtanga Yoga – this is the type of Yoga that I practice on a regular basis and means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit. It’s a fast moving, intense style of Yoga practice and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you’ll find that it will improve

your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength. Power Yoga – this is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting. Iyengar Yoga – This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses. Vinyasa Yoga – Vinyasa means breath synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose. Bikram Yoga – otherwise known as “Hot Yoga”, this type is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins. If you’re just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, I recommend trying a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga. I like Ashtanga Yoga best, but I also go to occasional Iyengar and Hatha Yoga classes for a bit of variety. To find out more about the different types of yoga visit the free online Yoga Guide at www.yogamentor.com. H&F

hletes are turning to yoga as a supplementary exercise routine to fix the imbalance in their body and to improve their performance in their chosen field of sport. Whether you are a golfer, basketball, tennis, or football player, the mind body connection in yoga is an important element in producing peak performance. Although proper breathing technique is the foundation of many sports, many athletes ignore it. Yoga will help fix this lack of breathing skill and develop the correct breathing technique that is very much required in any game of sport. The integration of mind and body through correct breathing patterns helps to build stamina and endurance in an athlete. Proper breathing techniques also bring more focus and attention to the mind. They help sharpen one’s intuition. This gives the athlete an advantage over his rivals. The various poses in yoga help to build a strong mid-section and the different types of contractions of these poses and movements act as a form of resistance training to the typical gym-based workouts. But unlike in a gym, you can practice yoga outdoors without having to bring heavy equipment. Imagine doing yoga exercises by a windy beach with the sound of waves in the background, on a hilltop with a great view and fresh air, or in a zen garden. Frequent yoga practice increases flexibility and range of motion and

YOGA

Benefits of Yoga for Athletes

the slow movements are perfect for athletes. Many athletes are already using yoga movements as warm up and warm down routines in their sport. Athletes in sports such as tennis and golf will notice improvements in their swing as a result of this new flexibility of the muscles and joints. In any given sport, the addition of yoga as a supplementary routine training has been known to improve the performance of the athletes. Most athletes are involved in some form of weight training and other resistance training that uses repetitive motions that only develop certain muscle groups, while ignoring others. That creates imbalance in the body. Yoga is able to fix this imbalance and help to develop the muscles that have been ignored through the contraction of these muscles in the various poses. Yoga is also a good workout to relieve boredom in athletes who perform the same types of exercises year in year out by adding variety. It is also an important element in recovering the body from hard aerobic and strength workouts. The numerous poses in yoga can be done in a low or high intensity workout according to the athlete’s needs. Overall, yoga is not only important in bringing in more strength, balance and flexibility to an athlete, but also brings more alertness, attention and focus that is so much needed by athletes in their very competitive world. Let the Gluten free Buyer Beware By Melanie Weir

I

often hear individuals say, where is the gluten free label? Based on more then a decade of research, I am sad to announce that in the United States, a gluten free label means absolutely nothing. Any manufacturing company hoping to make money, off what by many companies is considered a gluten free fad, can put a gluten free label on their product regardless of its actual status. So how do I know if a gluten free product really is gluten free? This depends on what definition you attribute to the words ‘gluten free’. It’s easy to identify whether a product contains obvious gluten elements like: wheat, kamut, spelt, rye, barley and oats. It is difficult to identify ingredients that may be derivatives of gluten like: malt, vitamin B, vitamin E, natural flavoring and maltodextrin or dextrin. For extensive list of gluten related ingredient lists, go to: http://isitgf.blogspot. com/2010/08/gluten-containing-foods-andingredients.html As of April of 2011, we do not have a commonly approved definition for what being gluten free means. The best definition is offered by the FDA. The FDA requests that gluten free labeled products (a) not include ingredients from gluten or gluten derivatives and (b) maintain a status of less than 20ppm of gluten for all gluten free labeled products. Go to: http://www.fda.gov/Food/ LabelingNutrition/FoodAllergensLabeling/ GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm111487.htm#q9 On May 4th, in Washington DC, the FDA will be holding a Summit discussing current problems with manufacturers gluten free labeling. It is hoped that they will come up with a common standard for the term gluten free. Go to: http://www. celiaccentral.org/News/News-Feeds/Celiacin-the-News/Celiac-in-the-News/161/ month--201103/vobid--5240/?sms_ ss=email&at_xt=4db98d235d5543ab%2C0 Until the gluten free term is formally defined, the gluten free label cannot be regulated by enforcement agencies. For the most part, companies are not trying to intentionally mislead consumers, but without a common definition for gluten free, manufacturers

themselves may be misled. How can I ensure that I am buying gluten free foods from a reputable source? There are currently at least four systems in use for regulating the gluten free status of products. These standards are currently, your best option for ensuring that products which claim to be gluten free are actually gluten free: (1) Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO), the (2) Celiac Sprue Association’s (CSA) , (3) Gluten Free Specialty (GFS) FIT Program, (4) Gluten Free Choices Regulatory Company: Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) Pros: (1) Program tests products for their gluten content, (2) Products testing below 10ppm, products can bear the GFCO seal. Cons: (1) Certification can be expensive, (2) Not all product batches are tested, (3) Only final product is tested for gluten status, (4) GFCO label should be double checked at gfco.org to ensure accuracy (5) Products may contain Oats Regulatory Company: Celiac Sprue Association’s (CSA) Seal of Approval Pros: (1) Requires products contain no gluten or oat ingredients, (2) Companies must test raw and final ingredients as non detectable for gluten at 5ppm to bear CSA seal. Cons: (1) Certification requires up front costs, (2) Product UPC’s are not currently available for viewing, (3) Proud sponsors of the CSA can be confused with the seal of approval, because a single logo is used for indicating either the seal of approval (below 5ppm) or CSA sponsorship (monetary support).

Regulatory Company: Gluten Free Specialty (GFS) FIT Program Pros: (1) Indicates the likelihood for gluten contamination in the process of manufacturing, facility maintenance, production and packaging. (2) Other common food allergens are also flagged, (3) Small companies are encouraged to test products through an independent lab or by Elisa Assay Test Kit, (4) FDA gluten free standards are used to question vendors, (5) Approved products can be purchased at the Gluten Free Specialty Market, located at 2612 J Street, Sacramento, CA. Cons: (1) The logo used to represent the GFS FIT standard for gluten analysis-for 3 years- is currently being confused with General Mills new Gluten Freely logo-same color scheme and font style-created in 2011, (2) The system relies on manufacturer reporting, (3) Gluten Free labeling laws by the FDA could allow for better reporting. Regulatory Company: Gluten Free Choices (Hain Celestial) Pros: (1) End product is tested below 10 ppm, (2) Machinery is cleaned between gluten and gluten free productions, (3) Approved products are available on the gluten free choices website. Cons: (1) System is only used on Hain Celestial Products, (2) Products certified are not defined by UPC, (3) Only final gluten testing is required to be below 10ppm, (4) Some products contain gluten derivatives like barley enzymes. If you live in the Sacramento area, stop by the Gluten Free Specialty Market located at: 2621 J Street, Sacramento. Or call (916) 442-5241. www. glutenfreespecialty.com. H&F

Remember the Seven Signs of Terrorism: 1. Surveillance – Someone recording or monitoring activities. This may include the use of cameras (either still or video), note taking, drawing diagrams, annotating on maps or using binoculars or other vision-enhancing devices.

: After bin Laden’s death hit the press, a lot of people immediately thought that the U.S. would get hit again by terrorists. From all your experience monitoring the acts of terrorists, do you believe we should expect retaliation?

A

: Yes. They have to hit us because of a credibility issue. They’ve been talking about how tough they are, how they want to take down America, destroy America, and now about how we killed their leader. To save faith (of their own followers), they have to conduct an attack.

Q

: That’s an interesting point from a psychological point of view. How do we know for sure, though, that we should prepare?

A

: For years, terrorists told us they were going to hit us and they did it. They have attacked us repetitively in foreign countries. Since 9/11, they have tried to attack us 50 times but their efforts were stopped. They are going to keep trying.

Q

: Many things have changed in security since 9/11, especially with airport security. What about flying?

A

: Aircraft remain a very interesting target to them. The terrorist groups out there are continually building and planning methodologies, systems and explosives to get past security. We’re pretty much in a catch-up mood but they never give up.

T

he Christmas Day underwear bomb that failed to go off as the plane landed in Detroit and the mailing of explosive laced toner cartridges put on board overnite package freighters were two examples of failed attempts on airplanes.

Q

: As concerned citizens, what can we do?

n light of the recent death of Osama bin Laden, we contacted William Cooper, Former Police Chief, nationally known for his presentations on anti-terrorism and author of Suicide Terror: Confronting the Threat, to get a few words of wisdom on the impact this might have on the U.S.

2. Elicitation – People or organizations attempting to gain information about military operations, capabilities, or people. Elicitation attempts may be made by mail, fax, telephone, or in person. 3. Tests of security – Any attempts to measure reaction times to security breaches or to penetrate physical security barriers or procedures in order to assess strengths and weaknesses. 4. Acquiring supplies – Purchasing or stealing explosives, weapons, ammunition, etc. Also includes acquiring military uniforms, decals, flight manuals, passes or badges (or the equipment to manufacture such items) or any other controlled items. 5. Suspicious persons out of place – People who don’t seem to belong in the workplace, neighborhood, business establishment or anywhere else, includes suspicious border crossings and stowaways aboard ship or people jumping ship in port. 6. Dry run/Trial run – Putting people into position and moving them around according to their plan without actually committing the terrorist act. This is especially true when planning a kidnapping, but it can also pertain to bombings. An element of this activity could also include mapping out routes and determining the timing of traffic lights and flow. 7. Deploying assets – People and supplies getting into position to commit the act. This is a person’s last chance to alert authorities before the terrorist act occurs. H&F

Babe Zaharias – One of the Greatest Female Athletes of the 20th Century By Anna Kelly

A

t a time during the first half of the 20th century when women athletes were not expected to achieve much in sports, Babe Zaharias was busy breaking records in golf, basketball, and track and field. Physically strong and confident, she broke the accepted models of femininity in her time and paved the way for the current acceptance of female athletes. Born Mildred Ella Didrikson on June 26, 1911 to immigrant parents from Norway, she was nicknamed “Babe” (after Babe Ruth) when she hit five home runs during a childhood baseball game. Didrikson was best known for her athletic gifts, but she was also a woman of many talents and interests. Among them were being an excellent seamstress, singer, harmonica player, competitive pool player, expert diver, roller-skater, and bowler. Didrikson’s worldwide fame began during the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics when she won two gold medals and one silver medal for track and field. She also set five world records in the javelin throw, 80-meter hurdles, high jump, and baseball throw in a single afternoon during the 1932 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Championships. Playing for her company’s Golden Cyclones, Didrikson led her team to an AAU Basketball Championship a year earlier in 1931. After the Olympics she performed on the vaudeville circuit and traveled with Babe Didrikson’s All-American basketball team. Despite all her athletic achievements, she would become best known as one of the best female golfers in history. Denied amateur status despite her lack of golfing experience, she decided to compete in the Los Angeles Open in 1938. This was a man’s PGA tournament, and

although she missed the cut, her participation was a feat no other woman would ever try until decades later. During the tournament she was teamed up with George Zaharias whom she married eleven months later. During the 1940’s and early 1950’s, Babe Zaharias became a leading player and the first female golf celebrity in America. Having regained her amateur status in 1942, she was the first American to win the United States Women’s Amateur Golf Championships and the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in 1947. She turned professional the same year and went on to have three Western Open victories as well. Babe became a founding member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association after having been a dominant player at the Women’s Professional Golf Association. Babe Zaharias won a total of 82 golf tournaments, 17 straight amateur victories, and by 1950, had won every golf title available. She even won the Babe Zaharias Open of Beaumont, Texas. Although she won the 1947 Titleholders Championship and the 1948 U.S. Women’s Open, Babe wasn’t shy about competing with the big boys of golf. She may have missed the cut in a PGA tour event during her first year of tournament golf, but she later went on to make the cut in every PGA tour she entered, playing in three PGA tournaments in 1945. To date, Babe is the first and only woman in history to make the cut in a regular PGA tour event. She became the fastest LPGA golfer to get 10 wins in a year and 20 days, and to get 20 wins in the span of two years

and four months. This record has not been beaten. In 1950, not only did she complete the Grand Slam of the three women’s majors of the day, the U.S. Open, the Titleholders Championship, and the Western Open, but by 1951 was the leading money winner. Unfortunately in 1953 Babe Didrikson Zaharias was diagnosed with colon cancer. Despite her illness she kept competing in tournaments and served as president of the LPGA from 1952 to 1955. She was ranked the top female golfer at the time she died at the age of 45. In 1999 the Associated Press voted her Woman Athlete of the 20th Century. She’s in the World Golf Hall of Fame and listed at #10 on ESPN’s 50 top athletes of the 20th Century. In 2000 Golf Digest ranked her the 17th greatest golfer, and Sports Illustrated named her the second on its list of Greatest Female Athletes of All Time behind Jackie Joyner-Kersee. During a time when some sportswriters remarked that a woman’s place was in the home getting themselves prettied up waiting for the phone to ring, Babe Zaharias proved that a woman’s place could be defined by whatever she wanted it to be. f you play racquetball to win, then a good weapon to have in your arsenal is a good “ceiling game.” Hitting the ball to the ceiling is a defensive strategy that many players use to get their opponent out of center court. Remember this: the player that controls center court is the player that wins. When should you hit the ceiling? A good rule of thumb is to hit this shot when you don’t really have a good offensive opportunity yourself. Your goal is to get your opponent out of center court position. Your opponent hits a shot that you can barely get to; take it to the ceiling with the intention of getting your opponent to shoot from the back of the court where most mistakes will come from. So, as you are working on developing a consistent ceiling game, remember to stay in the now. Your focus is hitting it to the ceiling. Put your techniques and thought process into hitting accurate ceilings as you practice this skill. Here are two easy ways to improve your ceiling game: 1. Warm-Up with Ceiling Shots After stretching when you first warm up before play or when you are in between stretches and ready to start hitting the ball, start hitting the ball to the ceiling over and over as you warm up your shoulder. You don’t want to step on the court and right away start banging the ball as hard as you can. This is not good for your muscles when they are not warm and ready for such activity. By warming up with ceilings you get to practice consistently hitting it to the ceiling. Make sure you drill your backhand just as much if not more than forehand. The more you drill your backhand the more confident you will be in game play. Your goal is to move yourself

close to the back wall where you would be forced to hit another ceiling after ceiling and not have an offensive opportunity off of your ceiling shots. Do this warm-up/ceiling drill for 5 minutes. 2. Commit 15 Minutes a Week to Develop Your Ceiling Game I honestly believe that anything you do with practice and commitment, you will get better. This holds true for developing your skill level and perfecting the shots needed to win in racquetball. Commit 15 minutes a week to developing your ceiling game, and you can’t go wrong. Get on the court and hit the ball to the ceiling over and over. You could do this in three, five-minute increments over the course of a week. Do it around your schedule. If you have to do it in one day, commit to 15 minutes to improving your ceiling skill. Lawler Sports is a major online retailer for all your racquet needs. Simple Golf Tips To Help Your Game By Gary M Stevens

G

olf is a fantastic game that is believed to have originated in Scotland. In golf you will typically be playing on either a 9 or 18 hole course. We recommend that as a beginner you start off with the 9 hole courses to ease yourself into the rules and etiquette of the game. One of the attractions of golf is that it takes an immense amount of skill to perfect or improve your game. However, this has, in the past, led to the game becoming ever so slightly elitist as only the well off could afford to take lessons and lower their handicaps. This is no longer the case nowadays as the internet has allowed every man and his dog access to top tips and advice as well as simple golf instruction online. All of this comes at a fraction of the cost of professional lessons. As an introduction I would like to go through the types of shots that you are likely to encounter once you are out on the course. This advice will stand you in good stead and get you off in the right direction. It is important that you understand the different types of shot as you can then visualize what you are trying to achieve when playing. Types of Shots The Drive – This will be your first shot on any hole and is usually played using a wood; however, if the hole is short, it can be with an iron. The aim of the drive is to take the ball as close to the green as possible in one shot, though other factors such as hazards and approach direction have to be taken into account. The Lay-up – The lay up is a shot played from the fairway that will usually not reach the green due to the distance involved. The shot is made with a high degree of accuracy and course hazards have to be considered when

taking the shot. You do not want to end up in the bunkers (sand filled holes) or behind trees/bushes, etc. The Approach – This shot is more often than not played using a high iron such as a 6 or 8 iron, its purpose is to get the ball onto the green ready for putting. An approach shot is usually played when you are within 140 yards of the pin. Club selection is vital when on the approach so as not to overshoot the green. The Chip – The chip shot is used when your approach didn’t make the green, for example, you have over shot slightly or fallen short. The usual club selection here would be either a sand wedge or a pitch wedge, but once you become more accustomed to your irons and the distance the ball rolls on the green, you can start to use them as well. The chip shot should be played as a short lofted shot. It can be from anywhere within 25 yards of the green. The Putt – Putting is the final shot and is played once on the green. It is a short rolling shot played using a specialized club known as a putter. The aim of the putt is to read the roll of the green and get the ball into the hole in one shot. So now you have armed yourself with the basic shots in a game of golf. Make sure you are familiar with the techniques used to play each shot and above all, practice, whether it be at the range or on the course. Golf is a great game, however it is a skill that needs to be learned. We all have to start somewhere and as you play more, so your confidence will grow. Enjoy your golf and look out for more super tips and advice. Regards! Gary has been playing golf for over 20 years and has played around the world, there are a thousand fixes to all golf errors however I can highly recommend visiting http://www. simplegolf.org today for solutions to all of your faults. The Case of Miss Tilly

Y

ou may have tuned in to the television news reports around April 15th and heard the story about Miss Tilly, our magazine mascot. If you’ve followed us throughout the years, you may also remember her. She was the feisty little Pomeranian that was seen frequently with Gracie when her photo graced the pages of the magazine between 2002 and 2005. She appeared on my health television show a few times as well and was important for me in my creation of a method to identify faces of friends and of criminals, and of dogs. When she was taken to a pet sitter during recovery from a trauma, we had no idea what would happen next. The pet sitter gave her away and then lied about it for three years, not confessing until after I wrote my book, Finding Miss Tilly & The Golden Thread. Can you imagine the anguish we had about a missing part of our family? Gracie still waits by the gate for her return. It took awhile to track down the person who had her but on April 15th, the

arrested for possession of stolen goods. When your car is stolen, the thief took more from you than your set of wheels. He took your mode of transportation to and from work and interfered with your ability to care for your family. You purchased the car, maintained it, and it rightfully belongs to you. If you have received counterfeit money, the money is seized from you and you are not given the equivalent amount of money in “real” money. Interrogation from the police will determine whether or not you will be arrested. case appeared before a Sacramento judge in small claims court. The defendant claimed the dog belonged to her. I presented evidence of the original microchip number in Miss Tilly’s medical file from 2002 while a veterinary technician explained how chips work and scanned the dog for the chip. The defendant presented a microchip certificate from 2005, arguing that Miss Tilly was in a good home and the residents loved her. But the legal question is this: Is love of a dog that doesn’t belong to you enough reason to keep the dog?

The Law When It Comes to Dogs & Cats The defendant lost the case. Every one of her countersuit claims were “without merit”, according to the judge. Since a dog is considered property in California, her value had to be assessed, and was based on the price of a similar dog and lost revenue since she was an established dog model and mascot. The judge said he did not have the authority to order her to give Miss Tilly back, but nevertheless, wrote on the judgment return the dog or pay the money.

Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers is Not the Law The answer is that it depends on the state that you live in. If you live in a state where dogs are considered property, a dog is viewed as a piece of property, such as a house, car or other possession. Here’s how the law works in this case: If you move into a vacant home that’s not yours, you’re arrested for committing a crime (s). If you steal a car, you’re arrested and called a thief. If someone steals a car and then sells it and the car is found, the car, considered property, goes back to the original owner. And that’s how it should be, wouldn’t you agree?

If you live in a state where dogs are considered companion animals or companions, then it’s possible that someone might have had a case, based on loving an animal for over 5 years. However, the basic fact would have remained: the original chip in the dog stated that I was the owner.

If someone steals a car and gives it to you, you are just as culpable for the crime as they are and

Interestingly enough, cats are not considered property in the state of California so if Miss Tilly had been a cat, there would be no case at all. Even if a person has no respect for man’s law, there’s always a higher law – that of spiritual laws. Many religions state it pretty clearly: if you have something that doesn’t belong to you, give it back without a fight!

Fleabusters Has Arrived… and the Fleas are Gone! By Dr. Donna, Editor

fter a few weeks of my pets suffering from the scratching and biting of fleas despite Advantage, flea baths and extra grooming, it was time to do something very different. The paradigm about how to get rid fleas had to be changed. That’s when the Fleabusters™ arrived with their Rx for Fleas Plus™ Powder for inside the home and Nematodes for the outside. This company has treated millions of homes throughout the country in 35 years of business. Their mission: kill the fleas, larvae and all the hatchings of the flea critters and keep pets happy and free of discomfort. They are the only company in the U.S. that offers a money back guarantee for an entire year on their service. Fleabusters™ uses their patented, EPA approved powder that is less toxic then table salt for treating inside the home and Beneficial Nematodes which are nontoxic for the outside.

Now, two problems – fleas and unwanted animals could soon be gone. And if the animals

the ground soaked or well watered. This way the nematodes can easily burrow into the ground during the heat of the day, coming out at night to seek out the fleas and eat them. Nematodes reproduce quickly and as the eggs hatch they quickly increase their numbers and over take the fleas. “Water the nematodes three times a week to keep them multiplying and killing the fleas. If you set up a sprinkler to run for about 10 minutes at a time that is a perfect amount of watering to keep them very happy,” Juan said.

“We have to find the source of the fleas first,” said Juan Guardado, service technician for the company. As soon as he arrived, he asked if there had been any rats, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, or other four-legged creatures on the property. In my case, there had been a possible skunk nest underneath the deck. Juan made sure that the deck area was treated with extra special care. He also found a hole

The dogs and I watched him spray the nematodes in the yard. Because the nematodes are not harmful to the dogs or cats, the animals could be outside during treatment and not be harmed. Beneficial nematodes will only go after specific pests and will not harm plants, trees, bushes, gardens, people, pets, birds, lady bugs, earthworms or any other beneficial insects. They are one of the few items to be classified as non-toxic by the California EPA. “The nematodes we use are grown specifically for Fleabusters. They are more durable, work faster and attack more of the pests you don’t want to see in your yard or on a golf course. You can tell a difference in the fleas in about 5-10 days,” he said. “Don’t forget to water them!” Fleas are constantly being introduced into your yard by cats walking on the fence,

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY RIDE UPHILL ON A MOUNTAIN BIKE By Wang Pang

R

iding a mountain bike up an uneven, dirt or gravel path presents a number or challenges you wouldn’t find riding on the road, or riding a road bike. The loose terrain means there is less grip for your back tire to move you forward, and less grip means slip. In addition to less grip, the front of a mountain bike can be quite tall (if you have a long travel mountain bike with more than 150mm of front fork travel), which can sometimes lead to the front of the bike lifting off the ground on steep climbs. Some new forks have u-turn (rockshox) or talas (fox), which let you change the travel length to help reduce this problem. Another problem the front fork has is the up and down bobbing. While great for going downhill, that bobbing makes climbing less efficient. Again, some new forks have lockouts, which lock the front fork to help improve climbing efficiency. Clearly, having the right equipment for the right job is important. But, equipment aside, there are some basic techniques you can use to improve your climbing abilities, no matter what bike you’re riding.

1. SLIP

To reduce slip you will want to have a smooth pedal cadence/ rhythm, and stay in your seat. A smooth rhythm will help the wheels maintain grip throughout your stroke and staying in your seat will give the rear wheel the weight it needs to dig in. Getting out of your saddle will shift weight off the rear tires, making them slip 36

more easily. Pick a low gear you can power through with, and keep your bottom in the saddle.

2. FRONT END LIFT

While it’s important to stay in your seat, on step climbs the front of you bike may lift off, making it hard/ impossible to steer. At this point, you might be temped to stand up and shift weight towards the front, but that will cause slip. So what do you do? To keep the front down, you will want to lower your body so it’s stretched across the whole frame (from saddle to handlebar). This means keeping your body low and head closer to the front of the bike. This position will give your rear tire the grip it needs, while giving enough weight to your front tire to keep it planted on the ground. These basic two techniques will help you stay happy and safe on the trails. Wang Pang is a casual writer who enjoys writing on topics including travel, mountain biking and green living. S

pring has sprung and your bike is still languishing in the corner it was unceremoniously dumped when fall first flavored the air. Well time to drag it out, dust it off and once again rediscover the joys of cycling. But before one journeys out, do yourself and your loyal steed a favor and follow these steps to cycling rebirth. 1) Prep your bike by doing a visual of its condition. Are the tires cracked along their sidewalls? Is the chain still in place? Wheels on? Does it still look rideable? If yes, move on to step 2. If not, visit your local shop for advice or needed repairs. 2) Check air pressure. The recommended pressure is embossed on the side of a tire along with its tire size, which comes in handy if tubes are needed for your doit-yourself repairs. Check the chain for proper lubrication. If it feels dry, it probably is, and if it squeaks while rotating, it is begging for relief. Wipe chains clean with a simple degreaser, dry and then sparingly apply the proper lubricant. Wipe dry again to remove any excess. 3) Clean your bike. A good biodegradable cleaner, an old toothbrush and a few rags are all that is necessary for this task. Wipe down everything using as little water as possible. If you pull the seat post, wipe it clean and place a dab of grease to the post before reinserting. This will provide a barrier against potential rust build up. 4) Inspect the brakes. If the pads strike the rim unevenly, pull unevenly or there is excessive wear, effect repairs immediately. Nothing will ruin the first ride of the season more quickly than not coming back from it. If in doubt about the condition of your brakes, visit your local bike shop. The repairs are generally quick and inexpensive. 5) Where would we be without the wheel? Jogging, I suppose. During the cleaning process, check the rims for cracks or excessive wear. Spin the wheels checking for its true; i.e. wobbling side to side. Ideally there will be none or so little as to be barely perceptible. Brakes are difficult to adjust when rims and wheels are banging from one pad to the other, which is another good sign that all is not well.

Careful consideration should be given to visiting your local shop. 6) What about those shifters anyway? This particular task requires elevating the rear wheel enough that shifting can be performed. Rotate the pedals forward and shift the rear gears first, from high to low. Is each gear transitioning smoothly, or does the chain seem to have a life of its own? You may have to enlist the aid of another to help you out here if elevating the rear is too problematic. You can check the front gears as well at this time in the same fashion. There should be little to no chain rub to the outside of the large front chain ring or to the small inner chain ring. These particular adjustments are challenging, but something that the magicians at your local shop can quickly cure. 7) Cables – They’re connected to something. If your cables show signs of wear, replace both inner cable and outer housing. Check for signs of corrosion and frayed ends. Depending how much one rides, a good case can be made for replacing all cables once a year if 20003000 miles are logged. Shifting becomes remarkably smoother and brakes more crisp. Another inexpensive repair that has tangible rewards. If in doubt, well you know – that local shop is closer than you think.

s ,IFT YOUR BIKE AND LET IT FALL BACK onto its wheel. Excessive rattling is not a good sign. Check it out. s #HECK YOUR BRAKES ONE MORE time. Stopping when one wants to is a wonderful occurrence. s 3TILL HAVE AIR IN THE TIRES #HECK s 7HEELS STILL SPINNING FREELY (IP

The Other Side of Sport Injury: Part 1 K

enny McKinley, wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, played only 8 games in his rookie season before a knee injury sidelined him. He started the 2010 season on the injured reserve list. In September of 2010 he committed suicide. The stressor of the knee injury coupled with his own psychological predisposition and lack of coping resources resulted in tragic consequences.

It is not just elite athletes who experience emotional distress due to injury. Since many people depend on exercise or sport for stress management and well-being, injury can mean the loss of an important coping strategy. Studies have shown that injured recreational runners experience significantly more depression, anger, confusion, and low self-esteem than non-injured runners.

When athletes get injured, the immediate focus is on the physical damage but often overlooked are the emotional/psychological repercussions. Individuals may experience significant losses related to routine disruption, impaired abilities, athletic identity, future competitive dreams, delays in meeting competitive goals, income, and social networks to name a few. Difficulties may also arise in relation to coping with pain, loss of independence, and isolation. Other responses such as loss of confidence, feelings of letting the team down, assault on one’s personal identity, and feelings of worthlessness are also not uncommon. It’s important to pay attention not only to the physical but also coping. If we do not look at injury holistically an entire part of the athlete necessary for successful recovery is ignored.

In our culture, negative stigma tends to be attached to psychological and emotional difficulties. In sport culture, where physical injuries are seen as needing the utmost attention, emotional difficulties and distress are often ignored or labeled as weakness. Athletes tend to underreport emotional and physical distress, fearing the perception of coaches, teammates, and even fans. Athletes expect to play in pain, be stoic, and give 110%. When the inability to do so comes from emotional distress,

shame may get in the way of letting anyone know that they are suffering. Given that athletes are less likely to report emotional distress only reiterates the importance of inquiry by friends, family, and health care professionals. Just asking how the person is sleeping and eating, or whether they are isolating themselves or feeling supported by others are important sources of information. Pay attention to drastic changes in social patterns, motivation levels, and adherence to rehabilitation routines. Notice whether the person’s thinking is catastrophic or reality based. Since higher levels of overall general wellbeing have been associated with more positive rehabilitation outcomes, counseling may be helpful in establishing healthy coping strategies, promoting adherence to physical rehabilitation programs, promoting better recovery outcomes, and aid in returning to sport with confidence. Counseling post injury can also help to create the opportunity for personal growth, challenge, and performance enhancement. Symptoms that may signal someone is having difficulty coping with injury include but are not limited to anger, grief, anxiety, confusion, depression, frustration, feelings of loss, self-doubt, and fear of re-injury. Those who strongly identify with the athlete role tend to be more at risk. Opportunity to Knock…or… KICK DOWN THE DOOR!

ell, not literally. The best way to ‘kick down the door’ is to approach life with a positive attitude. In teaching martial arts to thousands of students, children and adults, since 1975 I have learned that controlling your attitude is ‘key’ to success. In anything and everything. Often how you approach life is the only thing you may control!

habitual victim, and therefore cannot have control over his life. He has chosen to suspend his present and future as he wallows in the misfortune of his past. Self-talk is creation—Or in tech speak, “Garbage in, Garbage out.” Another reason positive attitude is so important is that belief in oneself is self-fulfilling

A smile and a positive outlook will open doors that opportunity may only knock on. Why is a positive attitude important? A better life experience—a person with a positive attitude has a better chance of being successful in life because he knows how to get the most out of any situation. He sees opportunity because he looks for it. An attitude is nothing more than a filter, similar to the ones used in photography. If a photographer uses a blue filter or a softfocus filter, the picture changes – but the object being photographed does not. All that is really different is how we see the object. It’s the same with our attitudes. A person who sees a bad situation as a lesson or a warning will have a different experience than someone in the same situation who sees it as bad luck or punishment.

Likewise, when a person states to himself that he believes that he can do something, the mind immediately starts looking for solutions and ways to accomplish it. We’ve shared this thought before, like Yoda says in Star Wars, don’t try, Do. Again, it’s about having a positive outlook just as athletes ‘visualize’ their performance before stepping up to the starting line. In your mind, ‘see the winner, be the winner’. What you feed your mind is what you will see in your life. “Garbage in, garbage out”. So be careful of your mental nutrition.

SpecAd

Yet the situation is the same. The only difference is how each person evaluates it. And this is where the importance of a positive attitude matters. The positive person has a better chance of moving on because he will use the situation to make his future better. He will see beyond the surface misery and while he will move forward more cautiously than before, he is confident that he has grown and can have more control over his future. He is bigger than his problems.

prophecy. What we believe is what we manifest. Why is this? Because the mind is an amazing machine that is programmed to find answers. It understands patterns and matches, so when a person states to himself that he doesn’t believe he can do something, the mind immediately starts producing obstacles to prove the statement correct.
