Tailoring a Weight Workout for Runners weight workout for runners that not only specifically targets the muscles used in running, but also mimics the way that those muscles are employed while running. Science of Specificity of Training As odd as it may sound, exercising the muscles of the legs will not necessarily make one a better or stronger runner-unless that “leg action” is similar to that which is utilized during a run. But numerous scientific studies have born out this conclusion. One such study is an extremely convincing case in point. In this study, the researchers directed the subjects to use weights to strengthen their arm muscles, but to only perform these exercises with their arms bent at a 90-degree angle from the elbow. At the end of this trial, the researchers discovered that the subjects, not surprisingly, increased the strength of their arms while bent in this position. These subjects were then re-tested on the strength of their arms when bent at the elbow but, this time, at a 60-degree angle. Even though the arm muscles used were the same for both angles, there was almost no strength improvement in the group exercising at an 60-degree angle. Another study, conducted by The Centre for Exercise Science and Sport Management of Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia, showed similar results. The evidence is now compelling-a weight workout for runners, as for other athletes, should replicate their given sport as much as possible to maximize specific athletic performance.

E

SPORTS & EXERCISE

very year, millions of runners utilize weight training in hopes of achieving peak performance in their given sport. To that end, runners, like many athletes, typically choose the most popular of the available weight-bearing exercises at the gym, such as squats, bench presses, biceps curls, leg extensions, and abdominal crunches. There is only one problem with choosing these common weight programs, says Owen Anderson on his Peak Performance website, none of these exercises will help you to win your next 5K run. For that, you need to utilize a weight workout routine for runners that incorporates exercises specific to the physiological act of running. Specificity in Training As unique as this advice seems, a number of studies support Anderson’s conclusions. If you want to become a better runner, these studies indicate, you must perform exercises that mimic the movements of a runner. The muscles that you strengthen that are not specifically used in running will not transfer over to peak running performance. As Anderson, in his inimitable style, notes: “Squatting makes you a better squatter. Bench presses improve the strength of your pectorals and triceip muscles. Ab crunches help you get better at bringing your shoulders toward your hips and may make you look prettier at the beach.” But none of the exercises will make you a better runner. To do so, you must develop a

Weight Workout for Runners-Using Resistance Tubing With the need for athletic specificity training comes the need for new workout programs. There are now many such excellent |

programs designed for different athletes. One such weight workout for runners utilizes resistance tubing to target the specific areas that runners use while running. (Resistance tubing can be bought in sporting goods stores and in most department stores.) Here’s some ways to use the tubes to improve your running performance. Heel Raise. Great heel extension is essential in great running performance and technique. The power of the “push off ” lies with the power of the heel. Try this exercise to improve the strength of your heel extension. 1. With the balls of your feet, step on one end of the resistance tubing. Secure the other end to a stationary object 2. Rise up on the balls of the feet, then slowly lower the heels to the floor until you feel the stretch in your Achilles tendon. 3. Rise up high on your toes and hold for a couple of seconds. 4. Do 10 repetitions of this heel raise exercise. For best results, perform this exercise while standing on a stable object two to four inches above the ground. Forward Thigh Drive. Adding to, or detracting from, the strength of a runner’s “push off ” is the hip flexors located in the front of the hip. Strengthening the hip flexors can significantly increase the length of the stride and the power of the “push off.” This exercise has proven to be an excellent weight workout for runners who want to improve the strength of their “push off.” 1. Attach one end of the tubing to your ankle. The other end should be attached to a stationary object that approximates your knee height. 2. Move backward from the stationary object until the tubing

By Cara Zolinsky grows taught. 3. Move your leg (the one with the tubing attached) behind you until you feel tension from the tubing. (This body positioning should be similar to that of the thigh position that is present immediately after a runner’s “push off.”) 4. Inhale. 5. Hold your breath while, with the other leg, you bring the thigh forward. 6. Hold this position, making sure that your shin stays parallel to the floor until your thigh has passed the vertical position. 7. Do 5 to 10 repetitions. 8. Repeats steps 1 through 7 with the other leg. In this exercise, make sure that you do not make the mistake of keeping your thigh parallel to the floor, as this will ingrain the poor habit of driving your thigh upward, rather than forward, when running. Other Techniques In addition to resistance tube workouts, practice exercises that boost your “horizontal power,” which is more representative of the mechanics of running. According to Anderson, three of the best techniques for boosting your horizontal power are: 1. Running uphill 2. Running uphill while a wearing a weighted vest. 3. Wearing a weighted vest while running around a track. Studies have shown that an appropriately designed weight workout will improve the peak performance of runners. Though the examples above are only a brief sampling of the many such available workout programs, they have proven to be extremely effective in increasing the strength, agility, and performance of runners. Try them...you have nothing to lose but time off your run! For more information about a weight workout for runners visit www.ultrafitnessdynamics.com.

arents who want advice about helping their children who are acting out, overactive and in many cases, overweight, often approach me. As someone who has taught thousands of children and adults since 1975 about the mental and physical benefits of martial arts, you can imagine what I recommend. Get them in a class! I believe Tae Kwon Do is the best choice, but find something that can get them moving and motivate them. Right now in America the U.S. Center for Disease Control says childhood obesity is a significant problem. University of Iowa Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. Eva Tsalikian, says, “We are seeing more and more very young children who are overweight,” Since 1960, the number of children who are obese has doubled in the United States. The U.S. government estimates that some six million children are now overweight enough to endanger their health. (Obesity is loosely defined as weight that is 20 percent more than appropriate for height and build.) “Studies show that obesity in children leads to obesity in adults, with resulting complications,” says Tsalikian. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1990 and 1998, obesity fueled a 33 percent jump in adult diabetes. However, the statistics are more alarming for young adults - for those between the ages of 30 to 39, the increase was 70 percent. Why are so many children overweight? Less activity and high calorie diets are the most common reasons according to Dr. Tsalikian. In other words, we let our children spend too much time sitting in front of video screens and feed them meals that might be less nutritious than we think.

Health/Nutrition

In a study of 400 teenagers, about one third failed to get enough calcium, iron, and several major vitamins. More than 65 percent of children between the ages of six and 19 eat too much total fat. Half of young people between ages of 12 to 21 engage in no regular vigorous physical activity. Running to the refrigerator or the bathroom between game levels isn’t exercise! Why has this become an epidemic among young people? Many parents think their children will grow out of it. Some children do “outgrow” weight problems. Only 20 percent of overweight four- and five-year olds become overweight adults. However, evidence shows that children who remain heavy through adolescence tend to stay that way as adults. Society has changed. You need look no further than the demise of home cooking and the increase of fast food meals. The snacks and sodas many of today’s young people consider “normal” food are empty calories that do not promote a healthy life style. Children suffer physically and emotionally by being overweight. For many children, it is not the extra pounds that take the greatest emotional toll - it is the reaction of family and peers. Self-esteem becomes an issue. What can a parent do to motivate their children? Lead by example is almost always the best way. While kids will often 1/6 Pagethey Adsit up and pay attention when a fail to listen to parents or teachers, martial arts instructor speaks. Soup Swap Parties - A Growing Trend

A soup swap is a fun way to meet new neighbors and get lots of exciting, new broths to stock your freezer with. You should allow plenty of time between telling your friends and neighbors about the meeting and actually having it. Allow a minimum of two full weekends between the invitations and the party and host the party on a weeknight so that people can drink a little, chat a little, and not feel obligated to stay late. Invite everyone you know and get each person to bring a friend. Tell everyone they need to bring six quarts of frozen homemade soup. You might need to double or triple a recipe to get this much. Remember that some recipes do not freeze well and this usually includes anything with cream or potatoes.

What Happens at the Party?

The party should begin an hour before the swap. When it is time to swap the recipes and everyone has met, get the chefs and their recipes together and let everyone say a bit about their dish. Is it a family recipe? Is it sweet, spicy, organic, or creamy? Divide the broths into smaller containers and get busy swapping. The fairest and easiest way to do this is to give each one a number and pick the numbers out of a hat. Everybody will leave with the same amount of broth they brought but different varieties. There might be a curried broth, a fish bisque, a canned pumpkin soup recipe and lots more. If you are going to have a soup tasting party, you should have some mini loaves of bread, crackers, raisins, pesto, and anything else on hand which would be nice to accompany the food. The following recipe makes a hearty and flavorful broth, which would be great at such a party. It freezes well too. Easy Mixed Vegetable Soup with Dill

This is a really simple soup recipe but do not let the basic ingredients fool you. The fresh vegetables in this tasty broth give it a vibrant and wonderful taste and the dill and black pepper are all you need for plenty of flavor. If you are taking this soup to a party, you should put a label on the container telling people to add the water and potatoes before eating it. What you will need: • 1 cup diced carrots • 2 teaspoons sugar • 1 cup diced onion • 1/2 teaspoon dill weed • 2 cups water

• 1 cup diced celery • 1 quart chopped fresh tomatoes • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 2 cups diced cooked potatoes

How to make it: Combine the carrots, celery, sugar, tomatoes, onion, salt, dill weed, and black pepper in a big pot and bring the mixture to a boil. Turn the heat down, cover the pot, and simmer the broth for forty five minutes. Let it cool, and then freeze it for up to three months in covered containers. To make the soup, thaw it out, put it in a big pot, add the water and potatoes, and simmer it for half an hour. Why not make your favorite pumpkin soup recipe for a soup swapping party? If pumpkins are out of season, you can make a canned pumpkin soup recipe instead and nobody will be able to tell the difference. Pumpkin soup is really special and will delight anyone who tastes some. Find all the best pumpkin soup recipes at PumpkinSoup.org

will probably never know that this atlas bone is the cause of all their problems. The atlas bone can have devastating effects on the health of the human body when it becomes misaligned. Any person suffering from pain or ill health should find out if their atlas vertebrae is in proper alignment. Otherwise, they could be on a wild goose chase spending tons of money with nothing but empty promises from well meaning doctors. When the atlas vertebrae shifts out of alignment and gets stuck it will stay that way until someone fixes it. An atlas misalignment actually causes the hole in the bottom of the skull to not line up properly with the hole in the top of the spine formed by the atlas bone. This causes a squeezing or stretching of the delicate neural tissues located in this area. There are literally trillions of nerve fibers located where the skull joins the top of the spine. Depending on which nerves are effected will dictate which symptoms develop. Since the brainstem is the autonomic control center of the human body, any nerve interference at the brainstem level can lead to possible dysfunction of involuntary functions of the

By Dr. Brett Gottlieb, D.C. body such as digestion, circulation, immune system etc. This process can take many years to develop. Typical symptoms due to autonomic dysfunction include allergies, sinus congestion, heart palpitations, anxiety, fibromyalgia, insomnia, restless legs, migraine headaches, and vertigo. The postural control center of the body is located in the upper neck as well. When the atlas shifts out of alignment it causes the entire spine to shift leading to one hip being higher than the other, twisting of the entire spine, and a short leg. Often times the head will appear tilted to one side and the shoulder will be unlevel. A short leg will cause a shifting of body weight to one leg. Often time a person with an atlas misalignment will could be placing 20-30lbs more weight on one leg. This of course can lead to hip, knee, ankle, and foot problems. The end result of all this postural distortion is pain. Typical symptoms might include neck pain, back pain, knee pain, hip pain, foot pain, tendonitis, bursitis, tension headaches, shoulder pain, TMJ dysfunction, and numbness/tingling sensations in the arms, hands, and feet. Luckily, there is a very precise method to get the atlas vertebrae back into proper alignment. This method is called NUCCA. You can learn more about NUCCA by visiting my website at painfreelife. net. You can call my office for a free consultation and examination to determine if your problem is being caused by an atlas misalignment. My office number is 916-965-7155.

Nightmares

When Dreams Become By Terry L. Gillis

N

Post-traumatic stress nightmares (PSNs) are different from your average run-of-themill nightmare in that they’re usually experienced by people who’ve lived through a traumatic event, and the dream content and story will closely resemble the event. So there’s very little disguised imagery. Robert Van de Castle points out that the dream is recurrent with little alteration from time to time, except that elements from the dreamer’s current environment may gradually be incorporated into the prescribed dream plot. One psychological theory holds that post-traumatic dreams are the body and mind’s joint way of replaying the event in an attempt to master it within the “safe” context of the sleeping body and dreaming mind, where the event can be re-experienced without harm. Eventually the anxiety and stress associated with the traumatic event diminishes as the dreamer regains control and confidence in waking life. It’s also important to recognize that such things as a messy and vicious divorce can be experienced as trauma, especially by children. Although we may not have been prisoners of war, or survived a plane crash, there are still quite a few events in our everyday lives that qualify as traumatic. The more standard scary dream (and what most of us consider a nightmare), usually consists of frightening images and symbols relating to work, school, or relationships, and are often stress or anxiety induced. The threat here isn’t necessarily to one’s life, but to one’s sense of self and selfconfidence. We awake from these kinds of dreams with our hearts

pounding, perspiring profusely and often crying or screaming. These kinds of nightmares tend to be the ones that we’re relieved to realize was only a dream! In my experience, the most common types of nightmares are ones of either being chased or ones of being hunted down. One explanation: Being chased or stalked as prey are primal memories from our human collective unconscious, and they refer to primitive times when our ancestors were chased by wild animals. Back then, being caught meant certain death. Another possibility is that we feel unable to escape a situation that we feel we have no control over. I’ve found, time and time again, that nightmares are our unconscious mind’s way of getting our attention. If we don’t pay attention to our dreams, or we haven’t figured out the messages in past dreams, we’ll get one heck of a nightmare that forces us to pay attention, and more often than not, force us to make the effort to understand what on earth that dream (nightmare) meant. Dream Well! Terry L. Gillis has been researching and studying dreams for over two decades. He has concluded that dreams prepare us for what’s ahead. By paying attention to our dreams and understanding their messages, we can decide on the best course of action to take to create the life we want.

Viewpoint Inspired We’re trying really hard to be “great parents”, Mitch. The problem is, we’re not always sure what the best choice is, and then there’s “consistency”?! Challenging! We’re blessed with two really great kids, and we’re really committed to making solid choices for them. Our dilemma: We worked so hard to keep our oldest child away from video games, television, and the internet… Now, we’re not sure that’s the way to raise our second child! Until he was six years old, our son (now 10 years old) never saw a television show in our home, and we only allowed him a hand-held game thing. Gees Mitch, why’d we bother?! He picked up EVERYTHING at preschool and at his pals’ homes! He begged and pleaded for video games and TV; we didn’t give in! To this day, we strictly limit his time on games in our home. What a battle! My wife and I feel as if we used up loads of energy for little benefit. As I’m writing this, he’s at one of his friend’s house planning some big video game day. He rejects all sports (put up with one season each of basketball and soccer), and wants nothing but those games! With kid number two we’re lost! He’s six years old, and we really don’t feel like fighting his interest in the games, etc. What’s the best way to parent in this day of technochildhood? If we didn’t do family trips, our boys would do nothing but play these games! As it is, the fact that we “eased up” and let our younger son have more games and TV access earlier has made our older son feel we favor his little brother! Lonely Parents, Stockton, CA

Hey Parents, “In 1950, a father was involved if he spanked the kid now and then. Today, a father’s involved only if he coaches Little League, volunteers at the school, and monitors play.” – Author Unknown The concept of “parents” is endlessly (daily?) in evolution. Heck, it took some adult caveperson to first comment, “What’s with these damned KIDS?!” before anyone decided there should be “parents”! Now, parents are inundated with media messages about what a parent “should” be… Basically, uh, perfect! My first column years ago was in response to an adult pleading for advice on how to “be” all we’re beleaguered to accomplish. When I was a kid, most evenings involved relaxing, reading (television, for some)… Nowadays, keeping up with responsible parenting, technology, and running a home on a workday, it’s hard for a parent to get 15 minutes to him/herself !

RELATIONSHIPS

Dear Mitch,

Mitch Darnell, MA, OM Relationship Coach & Wedding Officiant

In my opinion, the very fact that you and your wife are endeavoring to be conscious, involved parents is 80% of the battle! DO KNOW… º There’s no template for Perfect Parenting. º Being involved and doing your best scores an “A” for Parenting in the universe! º Your children will not remember the best and worst things you believe you ever did to/for them. They’ll recall stuff you weren’t even aware of ! So, whaddaya do with Kid #2?!... • While the kids may demand absolute consistency, crystal-clear insight and integrity, you have the right to change your mind and to evolve! Try discussing your thoughts with your children, standing true to your values. The kids don’t have to “get” all you offer, but communicating with them conveys a few important messages: 1. Communication is important. 2. You are consciously making parenting choices (versus flipping a coin). 3. The fact that you’re paying attention to the issues involved. Yes, kids often feel they have something to offer the thought process (and often they do). You may be surprised at what neat, sharp children you’re raising! By talking as a family, you also can gain insight into what everyone’s really thinking on a number of issues. You seem like parents who think about the options and ramifications before you make a choice for your children. There’s a positive side to every decision you make. Please trust that a conscientious decision with your children’s best interests in mind pretty much is always a “good decision”. You and your wife are also human beings worthy of self-care! Cutting yourself some slack and honoring yourselves for your commitment to your children will go a long way toward supporting a solid family foundation! ~ Stay Engaged! Namaste, Mitch

Up In Smoke

Medical Cannabis

rom the ancient Egyptians to 20th century medicine during Prohibition, there has always been a belief that alcohol has medicinal effects. Even today they claim that drinking a glass of red wine will decrease your chance of heart disease. Of course, a glass of ordinary grape juice would accomplish the same. Now, for the first time, here in the 21st century, there are serious attempts to legalize and give legitimacy to the positive medicinal effects of marijuana. The use of cannabis has major social and legal effects on society as a whole. Socially, is using marijuana acceptable? It is certainly becoming more so as 14 states and the District of Columbia (our nation’s capital) have legalized the drug for medicinal use. The city of Breckenridge, Colorado has legalized it for recreational use. It is not uncommon to see people smoking marijuana joints on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. Is this socially acceptable behavior? In November, California, desperate to balance its budget, has a proposition to legalize the recreational use of marijuana by adults! Now, I am not a prude or a cranky old man (maybe a crotchety middle-aged man), but as a parent of two young, impressionable children, I certainly do not want my kids exposed to marijuana use in public. I also would be willing to bet that most of those smoking marijuana would not want their kids to develop an addiction to marijuana when they grew up. Legally, how does law enforcement respond to people using or possessing marijuana? This one question is the root of all that is fundamentally wrong with current laws pertaining to medicinal marijuana. President Barack Obama’s Administration has stated quite clearly in March 2009 that they will not pursue distributors of medical marijuana. That basically put the enforcement rules into the states themselves. California and Colorado are the two most prominent states dealing with the repercussions from their voters legalizing marijuana for medicinal use. One of the basic problems faced by all states that have legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes is that nobody was ready once these propositions passed. By that I mean, the propositions did not outline how the state would go about processing and adjudicating this new industry. There were no procedures for who could become a medical marijuana dispensary, how to classify the businesses, where they could open shop or even how to tax the industry. It is interesting to note that after California became the first state to pass a law legalizing medicinal marijuana in 1996, nothing really happened. Think about the current “pot shop” phenomenon in California for a moment. Doctors, patients and proprietors took very cautionary paths. Few doctors would risk their medical licenses by prescribing marijuana; few brave entrepreneurs would risk opening up a store that could be raided by federal agents at any time. Only those who the law was designed for – patients suffering from glaucoma, cancer and AIDS – sought recommendations for medical marijuana. What happened? Why the exponential growth in applications to use and sell medical marijuana? While the change in presidential administrations and legal positions regarding the enforcement of federal marijuana laws from Bush to Obama favors the “pot shop” community, there is no doubt that the huge surge occurred well before Bush moved back to Texas. The number of medicinal marijuana dispensaries has exploded in all

states where it has become legal. According to a story in USA Today (March 8, 2007) the number of dispensaries in Los Angeles increased from four in late 2005 to 98 less than a year later. In June 2010 there were 186 “pot shops” operating within the Los Angeles city limits. Ironically, an estimated 50 similar stores were forced out of business due to market over-saturation. With 186 “pot shops” open the City of Los Angeles had more than 400 approved applications for dispensaries within the city limits that had yet to open their doors. Law enforcement agencies and city councils were totally unprepared for the legalization of marijuana. With the number of shops and patients increasing at staggering rates the legal marijuana industry is virtually running itself, with lawmakers trying ever-so-hard to catch up to the giant snowball that is gathering size and speed daily. The pharmaceutical industry has not seen such a drastic increase in need for a medication since Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine. According to a local news channel in Denver, the state was receiving more than 1,000 applications for a medical marijuana license every day. According to the station, as of August 26, 2010 the state had a backlog of between 60,000 and 70,000 applications. What were all of these poor suffering souls taking before medical marijuana became legal and so available? Once you have your “medical marijuana card” there are numerous places you can go to find your “medicine”. If a dispensary such as “CannaMart”, “Choice Organics”, Nature’s Wonder”, “Flower Power Botanicals”, “Premier Wellness Center” or “Ganja Depot” is not within a short drive, just check on line at a site like www.findmypot.com. With the federal government deciding to step back and states completely unprepared and unsure how to regulate this industry, it has fallen into the hands of individual communities. Many city councils like those in Aurora and Broomfield, Colorado have banned dispensaries from their towns. Of course these cities will face lawsuits from would-be proprietors and needy patients who find it difficult to drive 10 miles to get their “medicine”. The cities are starting to get more help from the state level. In Colorado those with a criminal record are no longer allowed to own a dispensary. The attorney generals are starting to take an active look on how to regulate the shops. While this is a good thing and has forced many locations to close, the industry still appears to be spiraling out of control. Regulating the sale of this industry is key. It is smart to start with the people who own the shops and work their way down. Then, perhaps the biggest hurdle of all will be to tackle those who receive prescriptions for medicinal marijuana. That is a subject for the future. It is important to note that like alcohol and tobacco, marijuana is a drug. If you or someone you know may be addicted to marijuana or other drugs, it is important to seek help. There are numerous alcohol and drug awareness courses one can attend, as well as a variety of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). How to Manage

3 Side Effects

By Seb Grant

A

re you thinking about quitting marijuana, but are a little timid and hesitant due to the side effects you may experience? Did you know there are things you could do to help manage these symptoms? It’s true! Here we will look at three of the most common marijuana withdrawal symptoms along with strategies which can help lesson their general effect on you. The frequency and severity of the side effects you will experience after quitting marijuana are largely dependent on how frequently you smoked the drug, in what quantity the marijuana was smoked and how long your addiction has been going on. Naturally, those who are heavy, long-term users of marijuana will experience side effects which are more severe than those experienced by a casual user. However, even those who admit to smoking marijuana only once a month have reported a wide range of side effects which seem to mirror those seen with long-time users. Anxiety and Depression The active ingredient in marijuana, or THC, has a mind altering effect and can alter your perception, judgment and cause serious problems with memory and learning. It also produces a euphoric and relaxed feeling not found in other drugs – a characteristic that makes the drug extremely popular with users of all ages. When marijuana is abruptly stopped, so too is the calming affect it had on your brain, opening the door to a number of emotional and mental difficulties. Among the most common of these are depression and its “ugly cousin” anxiety. Depression will take a lot out of you; it will make you feel sad, anxious, apathetic and irritable, and will even cause problems with your sleep. To combat these symptoms you may have to force yourself to get up and get moving, to take on a project or begin an exercise routine. Anything which will help distract you from your symptoms can be an effective weapon against depression and anxiety, just as idleness and negative thinking will increase the severity of your symptoms. If you feel your depression has not ebbed after a few weeks, you may want to see your doctor and ask what treatments are available. He may prescribe medication which will help manage your more troubling symptoms.

Medical Cannabis

of Marijuana Withdrawal

Nightmares When you were using marijuana you probably noticed that your sleep seemed absent of dreams. That’s because marijuana shortens the amount of REM sleep – the stage when most dreaming takes place. After quitting, you are going to notice just the opposite effect. Not only will you dream, but because of the marijuana withdrawal, your dreams will seem more vivid and real, even frightening. While there is no way to avoid this altogether, your best strategy is to make sure you go to bed tired every night and normalize your sleep pattern so you are going to bed at the same time and waking at the same time each morning. You may still have vivid dreams for a while, but this strategy will help lessen the effects of the dreams until your normal sleep returns.

Loss of Appetite No doubt when you were using marijuana there were periods when you felt especially hungry, often referred to as “the munchies.” After quitting marijuana, however, you will probably notice the opposite. People coping with marijuana withdrawal often report that they are not hungry and that nothing sounds appetizing, and while this may seem like a harmless enough side effect it can be especially problematic. During marijuana detoxification it’s particularly important that you are well nourished to help you cope with the other withdrawal effects. Even if you’re not hungry, it’s important that you provide your body with the nutrients it needs to help you wage this battle against marijuana withdrawal. Try drinking a protein shake a few times a day, adding your favorite fruit and ice cream. Avoid junk foods like chips and candy and replace them with healthier alternatives. Most importantly, try taking a multivitamin each day to make sure you’re getting the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals. Recovering from a marijuana addiction is no easy task, but most, if not all of the symptoms you’ll experience will be temporary and treatable. Don’t expect immediate results. Be patient and follow the tips mentioned above and soon these side effects will seem like a distant memory. Do you need to quit weed without all the cravings? hat did I see that almost got me into an accident in my little suburban town? You know those annoying people who stand on street corners frantically waving for you to turn in to Chipotle’s or Quizno’s? Perhaps you have seen the person dressed up like a chicken waving you into KFC, or at least someone with a sign for Verizon or new model homes. Well, here’s a new one for you. I saw someone dressed in a marijuana leaf costume waving me toward “Cannamart”. This cute little moniker borrowing from the King Kong of all megastores, WalMart, is of course, a medicinal marijuana dispensary. In our little town of 60,000, there are currently nine medicinal marijuana dispensary outlets. Let me just say our town is definitely on the conservative side, yet we need five marijuana stores. God forbid we would have to go one town over where a population of 50,000 is serviced by 60 dispensaries. That was not a typo my friends, yes there are 60. In Los Angeles, California in June 2010 there were 186 “pot shops” operating within the Los Angeles city limits. It is estimated that due to market oversaturation, more than 50 cannabis outlets had closed in the past 90 days. Those numbers sure did not scare those Southern California entrepreneurs who had more than 400 approved applications for dispensaries within

the city limits that were opening up at the same time the 50 were going out of business. Granted, I am sure most of these would-be pot shop owners have an MBA and drew up a solid marketing plan as part of a comprehensive business plan. A late-night comedian joked that there were more pot shops within the Los Angeles city limits than public schools, and even more incredibly, than Starbucks. Who knew how important this medicine was and how many possible ailments it could cure? Why didn’t the FDA approve its use years ago? I mean, you can get a recommendation for its medicinal use for just about any ailment. Loss of appetite-check, sleep problems-check, stress-check, pain-check. It seems the only ailment left out is the only true one - the psychological and physical problem that you flat ran out of weed! Don’t misunderstand me. I truly believe there are medicinal qualities for marijuana. It is scientifically proven to help with glaucoma and pain management. And there is little use arguing the fact that in most people, marijuana does stimulate your appetite. I have yet to see any proven study on what percent of consumers have a legitimate reason for using marijuana. The above-mentioned real-life conditions where THC would ease the suffering would indicate an older group of clientele. How |

many 25-year-olds suffer from glaucoma? Yet according to one study, in the state of Colorado, the average age of a patient with a recommendation for medicinal marijuana was 40. There are more minors with recommendation - 17, than octogenarians - 7. Getting a recommendation should be more difficult, which will be a topic for another column. There are locations, pot shops, where you can walk in one door, see a physician who has no record of your medical history, complain about chronic pain or loss of appetite, and boom, you have a recommendation. According to a local news channel in Colorado, the state was receiving more than 1,000 applications for a medical marijuana license every day. According to the station, as of August 26, 2010 the state had a backlog of between 60,000 and 70,000 applications. You thought you had a tough job. Imagine looking at your inbox with 70,000 applications still to go through. No matter how hard you work, you can’t bust them out by Friday. Holy smoke, another 1,000 every day! That department is going to need to increase its staff. Speaking of increase in staff, on April 20th, commonly referred to among marijuana user as 420, shops in Northern Colorado admitted to local newspapers that due to increased demand for “Weed Day” they were bulking up on supply and personnel. I just know I am going

to need extra medicine on April 20th. Medicinal, my backside - at least for these patrons. Marijuana is attempting to join alcohol and tobacco among “accepted” drugs. States legalized marijuana for medical purposes through votes of the general public. The problem - no regulations were in place when those laws were voted in. Should marijuana be legalized for recreational purposes? Is it truly medicinal? Those are topics for future discussion. This is really a very serious subject. In finishing I will close with it is important to note that like alcohol and tobacco, marijuana is a drug. If you or someone you know may be addicted to marijuana or other drugs, it is important to seek help. There are numerous alcohol and drug awareness courses one can attend, as well as a variety of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). WHY ALL THE FUSS ABOUT P NK?

By R.D. Chapman, M.D., ABIHM

ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and “the wearing of the pink” celebrates a commitment towards awareness, education, and empowerment. Although most breast cancer occurs in women, men also get breast cancer. It is estimated that 1,970 breast cancer cases will be diagnosed in men in the United States during 2010 and that more than 100 times this number will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. and approximately 1.2 million cases diagnosed in women worldwide. Breast cancer remains the second most common cause of cancer death in women behind lung cancer. Not surprisingly, regular screening exams can lead to early detection and provide the best way to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. This screening begins with regular breast self-exams. Discuss with your doctor the proper techniques for performing this self-examination and the signs and symptoms to look for. Mammograms and MRIs are other screening tools to be used along with (NOT instead of ) self-exams. Most insurance companies and Medicare cover the cost of mammograms. The YWCA, Planned Parenthood, and the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program are great sources of information and assistance. The more you know the better. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure web site also provides an excellent source of information about breast cancer and is highly recommended.

So what can we do to reduce our risks of developing breast cancer? Once again, regular exercise and healthy dietary and living habits provide the most benefit. We may not be able to change our genetics, our age, or the toxic air that we breath everyday, but we can change our lifestyles. Regular exercise is important. Exercise lowers estrogen levels, lowers insulin levels, helps maintain a healthy weight and boosts the efficiency of our immune system to fight abnormal cells before they can become tumors. 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily is a good starting goal but 1 hour daily is optimum. Find an activity or several activities that you enjoy and build your exercise time gradually. This is especially important if you have been inactive or have chronic medical problems. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking where you start to sweat is beneficial. ( And no, working on your feet all day doesn’t count, even if you climb the stairs in the hospital, but it is a good starting point. ) Regular exercise will also help prevent osteoporosis or loss of bone density. Our bodies need sunshine also, so exercise outdoors when possible but don’t forget to wear sunscreen. Maintain a healthy body weight. Obesity and weight gain are known to increase your risk of developing breast cancer while losing weight may lower your risk. Discuss this with your healthcare provider to determine your ideal weight. Obesity is also known to effect the levels of sex hormones and elevated levels of estrogen and progestin are moderate risk factors in postmenopausal women. Your doctor can check your levels of these hormones to determine if you are at risk. Do not underestimate the importance of a healthy diet. Even women with the BRCA breast cancer gene do not always develop breast cancer. Our bodies have built-in mechanisms to destroy abnormal cells and our immune system cannot function without proper nutrition. Follow the recommended guidelines to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Eating as many different colors as possible will increase the different types of nutrients and antioxidants in your

diet. Eat whole grains and cereals, avoid white bread, eat fewer fats and sweets, and avoid cooking any fats at high temperatures. It is also recommended to take a good multivitamin, preferably time-released, every day. Herbal supplements may be helpful but the limited studies done so far have failed to find any benefit with one notable exception: Women that regularly use fish oil supplements containing EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) were found to have a 32% reduction in breast cancer risk in a study published this year. Our recommendation is that you consume one gram (1,000 mg) of EPA and DHA daily. Be careful when purchasing fish oil, many brands contain only small amounts of EPA and DHA. And last but not least, keep a positive attitude about life and limit stress. Stress is the number one killer in America. Negative emotions and depression prevent our immune systems from functioning at optimal levels and anti-depressant medications aren’t the answer. At the WeCAN Health and Wellness Center, we advise our patients to meditate for thirty minutes after exercising each morning. This helps to reduce stress and sets a positive mood for the day. Envision living the life of your dreams and finding an occupation that you enjoy, then do it. Try to avoid shift work or working late at night under artificial light. Studies have shown a small increase in risk in women who work night shift and in those having lower levels of the hormone melatonin. Exposure to artificial light at night is known to suppress production of melatonin. Medical cannabis, or marijuana, may also be beneficial by reducing stress levels, increasing enjoyment of life, and by blocking a gene responsible for the spread of breast cancer. Limit your alcohol intake to one drink a day for women and two drinks for men. And for any substance you choose to put in your body, including water and foods, remember the difference between use and abuse. Here’s to a healthier America. One World, One People, One Love. R.D. World of Gymnastics

By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C.), Editor here’s something magical about the 15,000 square foot T state-of-the-art gym called the

International Gymnastics Centre, located at 1260 Triangle Court in West Sacramento. They’re nourishing bodies and minds of all ages from infants to adults – with motion! “Gymnastics is the basic sport needed for every sport,â€? Denise Champagne, Co-Founder of the center said. “Children involved in gymnastics have confidence and their body and mind develop together‌ It benefits their physical development and improves their concentration, too.â€? Gymnastics is known to improve coordination, balance, strength and flexibility. “Athletes make gymnastics look easy but it all starts with baby steps. We teach our students that you can do anything in small steps. People think that they should be successful immediately at something but that’s never true. They have to take small steps and earn it,â€? she said. Earning it is truly what each instructor at the Gymnastics Centre has done. Denise’s husband and co-founder, Oleg Ibyadullin, was a former gymnast trained in the USSR. He achieved the highest award in the sport –

Master Sportsman, and received many first place medals. Oleg’s teams have won numerous state and regional championship titles. In 1997, the UC Berkeley Men’s Gymnastics team won the gold medal for the first time in 20 years. Edward Mikaelian is the Girl’s Team Head Coach. He became an Olympic Medalist for the former USSR team and World Champion in Germany games. Edward is a Master of Sport at the International Level. He is the inspiration for numerous young women to achieve state, regional, and national championships. You can read more about the background of their staff at their website, www.igcentre.com If you want to learn gymnastics for recreation and fun, this center is the place to be, but if you want to be the next star in the sport, that is available, too. The center’s rapid appeal and growth of members attests to the fact that both magical transformations are well worth the effort. Moms can take a take a class in Zumba, yoga or gymnastics. Recently, the center added a Mom, Dad and Baby Yoga class where parents learn how to massage pressure points that aid in relief of constipation, reflux and colic. The center also has a weekly group to support moms in their motherhood journey.

The International Gymnastics Center offers free childcare during the morning program when you enroll in their classes. Most classes are 50 to 60 minutes long; the first class is free. Denise and Oleg have expanded it to be a place where people want to go – there are Kids Nights Out during the week, summer camps, and even innovative classes such as science projects that have nothing to do with gymnastics. If you enroll your child in a gymnastics program, you have several choices. You can obtain training one hour per week up to 20 hours per week. For maximum developmental progress, 3 classes a week are recommended. Cheerleading classes and adult classes on trampoline and tumbling are also available. And if your child has a birthday that

is approaching, start making your plans now. Check out their website at www.igcentre.com and give them a call at 916-372-4496.

Are Your Estrogen Levels Interfering With Your Life? By Dr. Andrea McCreery

COVER STORY

Progesterone and Estrogen Domina nce

Estrogen dominance is one of the main causes of osteoporosis, cancer, ovarian cysts, fibroids, loss of libido, ovarian cysts and a host of other female problems in the U.S. Yet, we persist in prescribing synthetic hormone therapy to women knowing full well there are better ways to deal with the problem of estrogen dominance. And it isn’t limited to women alone. We have the mindset (mostly in the U.S.) that declining estrogen is the hallmark of menopause. It is actually common for women to experience surges of abnormally high estrogen levels during the menopausal and pre-menopausal periods as well in life.

From extensive and complex research, it has been found that there is more of a deficiency of progesterone than estrogen. After researching and referring to much of what Life Sources® has learned from the late pioneer researcher, Dr. John R. Lee, the use of natural progesterone (not progestin) is an aid in dealing with this syndrome. And, since Dr. John Lee’s passing a few years ago, we are hearing all too much about Vitamin D plus Calcium as the “cure-all” to just about anything and everything that ails us, especially, for conditions as bone loss. While Vitamin D deficiency can be present in certain states without much sunshine or not enough natural Vitamin D from Omega 3’s, we can rest assured that just about all foods have been fortified with plenty of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is also a fat-soluble Vitamin, so, it’s not going to leave your body as quickly as many claim. It is actually known as a secosteroid metabolite¹, as many are unaware. So, what can one do to make certain they are taking necessary steps toward healthier bones with all the confusion from so many experts? My simple answer is this; “moderation in everything”. Taking a good multi-vitamin, enzymes and amino acid combination that includes 300 mg. (for adults) of Calcium daily (taken per recommendation) can certainly be necessary for children. Pregnant and pre-menopausal women’s needs for calcium are necessary for the rest of their lives as long as Magnesium and Boron are the two other minerals added to allow better assimilation of the calcium. However, calcium supplementation alone is not enough for bone loss.

What is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance can start early on in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Many young women who suffer from this enter menarche with tremendously difficult periods, and doctors sometimes give these teenage girls (as well as women suffering from fibroid tumors, endometriosis, etc.) more estrogen by prescribing birth control pills to “help” regulate the frequency and severity of their menstrual periods. Many women will develop the estrogen dominance syndrome much later in life, because of a poor diet, causing liver impairment and/or environmental factors or also as a result of anovulatory cycles before menopause, meaning, menstrual cycles in which no ovulation occurs.

(Ovulation is necessary in order to produce the corpus luteum, which means “yellow body” and is found on the surface of the ovary after ovulation. Surrounding the ripening egg, the corpus luteum remains after ovulation to produce progesterone for the last half of the menstrual cycle. Without ovulation, less progesterone is produced, which can cause estrogen imbalance in some women.)

The “cause” of Estrogen Dominance Sy ndrome

Because of the natural hormonal fluctuations of menopause, certain lifestyle choices and conditions can also contribute to estrogen dominance syndrome, especially a low-fiber diet, overloading the liver with internal toxins, eating processed foods and absorbing toxins (a myriad of chemicals) from food and the environment.

Is it possible to avoid EDS?

Let’s consider the diet issue again. If you choose to eat foods low in fiber; you are setting yourself up for `overloading’ toxins in the liver. So making a healthy decision to increase fiber in your daily regimen by either eating a high fiber diet consisting not only of lots of fresh vegetables or taking daily psyllium husk with plenty of (magnetized) water - at least 64 oz daily - will help indeed! Why? Excess estrogen is excreted in the bowel. When stool remains in the bowel for a longer time, the estrogen is reabsorbed. Studies have shown that women on a vegetarian/high fiber diet have lower levels of circulating estrogen.

Lower levels of estrogen mean less estrogen stimulation of breast tissue, for example, which reduces the risk of breast cancer. It also eliminates liver stress.

What happens when the liver is o n “overload”?

The liver is one of the body’s main `filtration’ organs. It detoxifies our body and protects us from the harmful effects of chemicals elements in food, environmental toxins, and even natural products of our metabolism including excess estrogen. Anything that impairs liver function or interferes with the detoxifying process will result in excess estrogen levels, whether it has a physical basis, as in liver disease or an external cause, i.e., exposure to environmental toxins, drugs (pharmaceuticals) or dietary substances.

Furthermore, the estrogen dominance syndrome can be evoked in women by too much alcohol, drugs or environmental toxins, all of which limit the liver’s capacity to cleanse the blood of estrogen. It has been found that circulating estrogen levels increase significantly in women who drink. In one study, blood and urine estrogen levels increased up to 31.9 percent in women who drink alcohol. Consequently, breast cancer risks are higher for women drinkers.

Using Nature’s Balance

COVER STORY

Nature’s Balance should be used for 3 weeks with a week off, repeating the cycle for at least 3 months for optimum results. It is not unusual to experience some health reactions such as sleepiness, fatigue or slight headaches during the initial use of Nature’s Balance. This is perfectly normal and should subside within a few days.

Progesterone Deficienc y/Estrogen Dominance A 42-year old woman with regular menstrual cycles complained that over the past two years breast tenderness, headaches and fluid retention have increased before her menses. Her fibrocystic breasts and uterine fibroids have continued to worsen. The salivary progesterone level in the second half of her cycle (luteal phase) was found to be low relative to estrogen, which was high-normal. Supplementation with progesterone skin cream plus Life Sources’ Immuzyme® during the luteal phase resulted in an improvement in her symptoms. Her edema also showed marked improvement by adding in OPC-165TM to prevent excessive fluid retention.

Testosterone Deficienc y

A 73-year-old man complained of excessive fatigue, loss of interest in sex, and general mental lethargy. His saliva testosterone level was found to be low, and use of testosterone resulted in a marked improvement. Inappropriate Hormone Replacement; A 53-year old woman stopped menstruating at age 52, and was convinced to take oral estrogen and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA, a synthetic form progesterone) for relief of hot flashes. She complained of weight gain, fluid retention, migraines, and the persistence of hot flashes. Her ratio of salivary progesterone to estrogen was very low, indicating a lack of progesterone and a relative excess of estrogen. Use of progesterone skin cream in place of the MPA allowed her to halve her estrogen dosage. Her flushing stopped, and her other symptoms disappeared. She was ecstatic to report that she felt normal again.

Polyc ystic Ova ries

A 29-year old woman presented with excessive facial/body hair growth, acne, and weight gain about the waist. She had suffered with these problems since puberty. She had been on several of the popular low fat/high carbohydrate diets, which helped with weight temporarily, but resulted in a rebound shortly thereafter with even more weight gain. Menstrual periods were also irregular. Saliva testing during the second half of the menstrual cycle (luteal phase) indicated high-normal estradiol, low progesterone, and high androgens-both DHEA and testosterone. Further examination by her doctor revealed cystic ovaries. Dietary modification (removal of refined carbohydrates-pastas, chips, pastries, sodas (included no aspartame drinks); less sodium and no sugar, and use of natural progesterone has helped restore normal menstrual cycles and resolve the cystic ovaries. Infertility; Saliva estrogen and progesterone levels on day 21 of the menstrual cycle of a 33-year old woman having difficulty conceiving for more than one year revealed normal estradiol but subnormal progesterone output, suggesting a possible reason for her infertility.

A 43-year-old had a hysterectomy/oophorectomy only 2 years prior because of endometriosis. She now complains of a low sex drive and weight gain, despite supplementation with oral triple estrogen and progesterone skin cream. Her saliva testosterone level was below normal, and supplementation has resulted in an improved sex drive and a modest weight loss.

Mult iple Hormone Insuff icienc y

A 47-year-old woman complained of excessive fatigue, hot flashes and marked chemical sensitivity. Saliva testing revealed low levels of cortisol (am and pm), DHEA and estradiol, pointing strongly toward adrenal exhaustion.

Progesterone/Estrogen Insuff i cienc y

A 63-year old woman had never taken hormones since her menopause at age 51. She complained of vaginal dryness with painful intercourse, urethral irritation with urination and a bone density scan revealed osteoporosis in her hip and spine. Both her salivary estrogen and progesterone levels were low. Supplementation with natural progesterone skin cream improved her symptoms to some extent, but complete resolution of her complaints was obtained with the addition of an oral biestrogen (estradiol + estriol). Her bone density will be followed with yearly measurements, and is expected to improve. Appropriate nutritional interventions and a weight bearing exercise program have also been made. Counseling Can Help Your Child Melissa M. Avitia, LCSW

With creative interventions, counseling can help your child manage difficulty in their ability to process information, identifying own point of view of the problem, and address their personal struggle with communication of sensitive feelings and thoughts. To meet the sensitive needs of this population, creative counseling techniques need to be tailored to direct and indirect interventions. In addition, when working with children and adolescents, I discuss with parents the importance of their active participation in counseling services in order to achieve longterm progress. Positive lasting changes occur as a family unit. Understanding your child’s emotional development level will help you understand your child’s perspective and enrich your counseling experience. To help you do this, I am providing relevant information below as a resource for you when considering counseling services for your child or adolescent. Counseling for children 3-5 years: Children of this age understand simple emotions such as angry, sad and happy. Counseling services should be kept to brief sessions 30-45 minutes. Sessions arranged for children to be seen with family, as a unit, is usually most effective. Counseling services can be utilized as a means of helping your child learn how to use their words to describe their feelings instead of using temper tantrum behaviors to show their independence. Imagination is important at this age and can be used as an artistic means of understanding their difficult behaviors through their elaborate stories. Counseling for children 6-8 years: Children of this age have an increasing understanding of another person’s point of view. This allows them to see how their own actions negatively or positively impact other family members. The struggle of expressing emotions through tantrums is still present but becomes more feasible to do with words. Creative counseling techniques involves teaching skills to emphasize your child’s increased level of concentration and more active participation in the therapy process. Therapy engagement is achieved through fun therapeutic interventions used to establish connection and compassionate understanding of your child’s feelings and behaviors. Counseling for children 9-12 years: Children of this age range greatly value friendships. They often respond more to peer pressure. As adolescents reach thirteen, they may become more introspective.

Creative counseling interventions can be more direct in addressing strong feelings such as guilt, anger and happy. Furthermore with the help of supportive parents and their counselor they will be able to recognize new situations where they can apply freshly learned coping skills to negative behavior patterns. Counseling for children 13-16: Children of this age range have increased concentration, self-control and ability to organize themselves. Through their journey of introspection they fight to be identified separate from their parents and may become more argumentative in doing so. Utilizing creative counseling interventions to enhance their sense of control and security in their personal belief and values is an effective approach. I have found children of this group to be receptive by presenting counseling as a sequence of choices to be made, so that they have the accountability of personal direction in life. Counseling is most effective when provided to children in a supportive environment. Parents need to be willing to actively listen to their child’s perspective, provide validation and compassionate support in learning effective coping skills.

Health & Nutrition

O

ften times parents call or come into my office asking, “How is counseling going to help my child?” In working with children and adolescents, I have come to three conclusions of what children need in order for counseling to be effective. First it is vital to customize therapy services to their specific developmental level, emotional level and personal individual strengths. Second, it is challenging to address stressful situations (i.e. divorce, peer relationships, tension in family dynamics) as an adult. So to address the same situations as a child or adolescent is even more painful! Therefore, I believe it is imperative to provide therapy in a more sensitive manner in order to meet the cognitive and emotional needs of children and adolescents. And lastly, the creative context of providing therapy is significant to your child’s response and successful outcome of therapy. Creativity in therapy for children and adolescents is a key factor to promoting positive lasting change.

If you are in need of counseling services for your child or adolescent, feel free to call me for a free phone consultation. Breast Cancer Survivors: Naturopathic Therapies To Consider In Your Recovery

By Dr. Anca Martalog, N.D.

BREAST CANCER

reast cancer is one of the most important health issues a woman may have to face in her lifetime. Although the condition is more prevalent in the later years of life, younger women cannot afford to ignore it.

Breast cancer is one of the most important health issues a woman may have to face in her lifetime. Although the condition is more prevalent in the later years of life, younger women cannot afford to ignore it. There are various naturopathic clinics throughout the world that deal with patients with breast cancer. They all employ a similar approach, which uses the many modalities of naturopathic medicine: homeopathy, botanical medicine, Chinese herbs and acupuncture, clinical nutrition and lifestyle counseling. These therapies focus on a diet geared towards detoxification; this is based on the belief that cancer is the result of autointoxication, chemical exposure, stagnation and congestion. Also extensively used are high doses of supplements of pancreatic enzymes and antioxidants (free-radical scavengers). Some of the most effective nutrients used to treat breast cancer are as follows: Vitamin D: The risk of fatal breast cancer in major cities is inversely proportional to the intensity of local light Vitamin E: improves the hormones that protect against breast cancer. Vitamin K: breast tumors respond very well to vitamin K treatment. Calcium: studies have shown that reduced vitamin D and Calcium consumption increased the incidence of breast cancer from 37% to 75%. Selenium: high Selenium levels slow down the development of breast cancer. Iodine: breast cancer is associated with an under active thyroid gland and lower than normal levels of thyroid hormone in the blood (of which Iodine is a part of ). Other nutrients with anti-breast cancer properties are: vitamin A and Beta-carotene, vitamin B, B6, carnitine, vitamin C, Magnesium, garlic, green tea and evening primrose. There are also numerous botanicals, homeopathic remedies and Chinese herbs that have also been shown to be effective in the battle against breast cancer. Further, there are many individualized treatments (such as oxygen therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, etc.) that can produce results against breast cancer. An individualized program is always recommended, because all the above-mentioned modalities can come together and effectively fight breast cancer. It is important to note that, as with any other life-threatening diseases, it is much easier to prevent breast cancer than it is to treat it. This is, essentially, the area in which naturopathic medicine focuses all its energy and obtains excellent results. As a survivor, you might want to investigate further how naturopathic methods can help you in your natural recovery. Are you ready to start your natural recovery to optimal health? Dispelling Fears By Jan Hasak

(The information contained in this article does not constitute medical advice; please consult a physician if you have questions about breast health issues raised in this article.)

T

he primary, if not number one, concern of American women is that they will develop breast cancer. At least that was the biggest fear of those who answered a government survey in 2005. Dread of the disease lurks in the hearts of those who have witnessed their friends and relatives die of it. Adverse breast health also has a psychosocial component, fueled by fears of loss of femininity, beauty, youthful appearance, sex appeal, marital intimacy and other factors valued in Western culture. Women need not fear the disease as they have in the past. I had it at 43, and again at 52. Now at 56 I am cancer free, living a full life. Not only do I garden, enjoy my sons, and write, but I also volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the National Lymphedema Network, an organization dedicated to helping people with lymphedema, a swelling that can be caused by cancer surgery or radiation. Helping others takes my mind off my plight. While in 2009 new cases of invasive breast cancer in the U.S. are predicted by the American Cancer Society to be 192,370 and deaths 40,170, the good news is that fewer women are dying of the disease than in prior years. New treatments have revolutionized patient care, the result of multiple clinical trials testing new chemo regimens and targeted therapies such as Herceptin, Tykerb, Avastin, and aromatase inhibitors. Early detection also plays a role: the sooner the disease is found, the

Breast Health

sooner it can be treated before it spreads. Mammograms, clinical checkups, and self-exams are important prevention tools, especially starting at age 40 if no other risks exist. A closer look at breast health reveals that while some risk factors can’t be changed, including age, genetics, race, and family history, some lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. One proven factor appears to be obesity. If a woman falls within that category (a body-mass index (BMI) of 30 or more), she should try to lose weight. Another factor in the breast-cancerrisk equation is exercise: swimming, walking, climbing and jogging exemplify the kind of aerobic activities that are beneficial to breast health. Women who never bore children, and those who gave birth to their first child after 30, face a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Being pregnant multiple times in her twenties improves breast health for women, perhaps because pregnancy reduces the total number of lifetime menstrual cycles. Those using birth control pills have a slightly greater risk of breast cancer than women who never used them. A doctor can elaborate on the risks and benefits of birth control pills. Another factor shown to increase the risk of breast cancer is long-term use of progesterone hormone therapy (PHT) or estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Again, a knowledgeable physician should be able to discuss the pros and cons of using these types of hormone therapies. One suggestion might be to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time necessary. Breast-feeding may slightly lower breast cancer risk, particularly if it lasts 1½ to 2 years. This could be because breast-feeding lowers a woman’s total number of menstrual periods, as does pregnancy. Studies have shown that use of alcohol increases the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Women who consume two to five drinks daily have about 1½ times the risk of women who don’t drink. For optimum breast health experts suggest limiting drinks to one a day, preferably only two to three times a week. If a close family member had breast cancer, the woman should make sure she is monitored more closely, and ask her doctor if she should be checked for the BRCA-1 or -2 gene and if she is a good candidate for daily tamoxifen or some other preventative drug, or even for preventative surgery. It is important to remember that while breast health should be monitored regularly, there is no need to obsess over it or fear it to the point that activities like work and parenting get shoved aside. In other words, we should enjoy life! A breast cancer diagnosis is not the end of the world. Women are encouraged to take charge of their lives and dispel the myths that might be keeping them paralyzed in fear of their breast health going awry. A former attorney, Jan Hasak authored Mourning Has Broken: Reflections on Surviving Cancer (Xulon Press 2008). In this memoir she shares her long journey through two bouts with breast cancer. Listed on the National Cancer Survivor Day Speaker’s Bureau roster, Ms. Hasak addresses myriad audiences, tackling topics from cancer and lymphedema to the benefits of exercise and writing. She especially seeks to share her experiences with fellow cancer survivors. Ms. Hasak is currently penning a work called The Pebble Path, an inspirational allegory of her cancer ordeal, interlaced with poetry. To learn more, please visit her website at www.janhasak.com. Natural Health:

Selenium – Should We Take It? BREAST CANCER

By Harriet Denz-Penhey

Selenium is one of the minerals that are essential to

health and it is a problem for those of us where our soils are deficient. There is much in the complementary health literature that says that selenium can prevent cancer, but is that the case? What does the research really say and what could that mean for each one of us? Selenium is found in cereals, meat, poultry, seafood and eggs, but the amount depends very much on where the food is grown and whether the land is selenium deficient. When the soils are deficient then the plants cannot take it up into their cells and when animals eat those plants then they become deficient also.

Selenium acts as an antioxidant and helps to protect the body from free radicals that damage the cells. Studies on animals have shown consistent results. Selenium is needed to reduce tumor size, inhibit cell growth and the development of troublesome new cancerous cells, encourages those troublesome cells to self-destruct and improves immune function. Epidemiological studies have shown that there is a strong relationship between selenium availability and rates of cancer. The higher the selenium availability, the less cancer in the population of people who live in that area (up to a certain point - beyond that point too much selenium is toxic. However there are only a few places in the world where this is a problem, with some parts of China being one of them.) There have not been enough studies of a high enough quality for the Cancer Councils around the world to definitively say there is a cause and effect between higher selenium intake and lower cancer. However those studies that have been done are very promising. They show a cancer reduction of nearly 50% overall with effects in breast cancer and very strong effects in prostate cancer. In the meantime, what does this mean for the ordinary person in the street, or one who might have a brush with cancer? Do we take it or not? That will depend on where you are in the world. If you are in a place with very high selenium in the ground that provides your food then you won’t need to take it. A good rule of thumb is to find out if the farmers in the district need to add it to their stock food. If the animals that eat the grass in your district need it then you do too. If you live in a place like Australia or New Zealand then you almost certainly need it, as the soil is very selenium deficient. If you are unsure then you won’t go wrong eating a couple of Brazil nuts each day. Brazil nuts are the natural form of selenium and are good to add to your daily food intake. For those who choose to supplement at the levels that you are allowed to buy from your chemist or pharmacy there is certainly no harm to be done as long as you take the quantity recommended for you and there may be huge benefits. You won’t ever know if you are one of the people who don’t get the cancer because you supplement, but that is what prevention is all about. However don’t expect selenium to be a magic bullet. It is just one of the aspects of good health. To maximize health you need to do more than just take one supplement. You need to do at least 3 hours moderate exercise weekly, to eat lots of fresh dark colored vegetables and have fruit daily. Reduce the levels of sugar, bread, pasta, rice and cakes in your diet and keep those fizzy soda drinks to special occasions only. This is a good start. Natural good health requires that you take charge of your life and make the decision to those things that contribute to an improved immune function and an improved sense of wellbeing. So don’t just think about it. Make the decision to start making all of the little changes that will improve your health now. Blood Microscopy is Why

Important For Your Health Life Sources®, Inc. By Dr. Andrea McCreery

Healthy blood consists of single, round red cells of equal size and shape, active white cells in the correct proportion, correct number of single platelets, and clean plasma. Most patients have no concept of what their blood looks like or how it affects their state of health. Seeing their blood helps them understand their condition and enables them to monitor their recovery and gain feedback about their progress.

mutate from a high-powered, binocular microscope that includes DIC (Differential Interference Microscopy).

While Vital Hematology enables the practitioner to assess the cellular health and internal milieu (the homeostasis or “balance” of health) of the Immune System, we are able to see pleomorphic bacterial forms

Observing our blood under the microscope is the equivalent to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. In viewing this beautiful substance we are able to decode and evaluate many hidden messages and factors in which it contains right before your eyes. We are able to study and evaluate the shape and structure of the red and white blood cells and their overall condition. The blood plasma is also carefully analyzed for clots, parasites, fungus and other possible microorganisms. Over 40 nutritional deficiencies and risk factors can be observed, some of which includes;

iving Blood Microscopy known as Vital Hematology is a medical tool since the early 1600’s and for the past 10+ years has made an astounding comeback to assist those who want to get “to the root of their condition”. This valuable tool enables the viewing of living blood from under the microscope at various magnifications. Some practitioners refer to it as Living Blood Analysis or Nutritional Microscopy.

Science is very clear about the impact nutritional deficiencies have on the red blood cell size and shape. Red cell morphology related to nutrition is consistently documented in hematology textbooks. For example, overacidification and/or oxidation of red blood cells cause a deficiency and malabsorption due to overuse of pharmaceuticals. Even overthe-counter medications result in acanthocytes, a red blood cell with unevenly distributed spikes around the cell wall indicating liver stress. Observing such cell variation is a daily occurrence for practitioners of Vital Hematology.

body works, and about their nutrition including most of all, their functioning (or lack of ) a healthy/performing immune system. This educative role of Vital Hematology/Blood Microscopy empowers the patient and helps motivate them to make the changes necessary to return to health. Viewing specific variations from normal to an abnormal size in both red cells and Neutrophils (white blood cells) and other white blood cells which all contribute to assisting different infections, allows for specific nutritional protocols to be developed for each patient and for the patient to understand why they are making dietary changes, eating healthier foods and taking certain supplements to increase their overall immune system’s ability to return to an increased state of wellness.

Viewing the white blood cells and the plasma allows the practitioner to further assess the patient’s health status and determine the most appropriate steps to facilitate a return to healthy function. Living Blood Microscopy, or Vital Hematology, a name we prefer, is a tool that allows specific, individualized assessment of a patient’s health status. It enables the practitioner to develop specific protocols for each patient while educating and empowering the patient. It is a procedure that is highly valued by practitioners and patients alike. can better their teams. If you are a high school player wanting a college scholarship, the Basketball Camp is the perfect place for both the coach and the player to get to know each other. It is the job of the player to WOW the coaches. The coaches need to know who and where the good players are and all about them before they can recruit them for their teams. How do they find the best players for their teams? They usually don’t do it by just surfing the net. The may find out some information on the Internet. But they get most of their player info from other coaches and recruiters they have learned to trust. Coaches may play against each other, but listen up... They are still friends with each other as well. They know other coaches on every level. And, they are all looking for great new players. Coaches usually move around quite a bit and they form many friendships with other basketball coaches wherever they go. Coaches value the friendships they have with other basketball coaches. They are just like the rest of us; they love to be the first one to pass on good info. They talk among themselves all the time about the game of basketball and how and where they can find super new recruits. Coaches trust the opinion of a fellow coach who is also a friend rather than the word of a stranger. The big time coaches use recruiters and scouts. They also talk with booster club members and sports big shots. In other words, they will listen to the people they already know and trust. News of a “hot” basketball player travels fast. Today, with a click of a mouse or a phone call, a coach two thousand miles away can learn of a new up-and-coming athlete. This is really how word gets around in the world of college basketball. News of a high school star point guard could travel around the country in a matter of minutes. What can a high school basketball player do who wants

inding time as a runner or walker to work out can be challenging, especially if you are training for a marathon, half marathon, or other endurance race. Here is a trick for finding that time.

Have you ever bought a car and then noticed for weeks afterward that you saw the same make, model, and color of your car seemingly everywhere that you looked? Have you ever heard about an event -- such as a speech or music concert or book signing -- that you decided to attend and then wondered whether you must have been overlooking it because you then seemed to hear and read “everywhere” about the same event? Or have you ever learned about what to you was a “new” technique to improve your running or walking performance or to prevent injury while running or walking, |

only to realize that it seemed as if “the whole world” -- or at least all of your training buddies -- already knew about the technique? These are three examples of the reticular activating system (RAS) at work. Your RAS comprises some seven different neuronal areas that connect the brainstem, which regulates the central nervous system as well as cardiac and respiratory function, with the cerebral cortex of your brain. The key functions of the RAS are the regulation of sleep-wake transitions and the mediation of transitions between a relaxed but wakeful state and a state of high attention. So the RAS is part of an arousal system that regulates consciousness and attention, and you can engage your RAS to “automatically” find workout opportunities by giving it clear examples of exactly what you want. There are several ways to give your RAS clear examples of the workout opportunities that you desire: • Use creative visualization. This can be as simple as the daily exercise of finding a quiet place, closing your eyes, and imagining with detail and emotion for a few minutes the workout opportunities that you want. • Use a vision board. This can be as simple as drawing or pasting on a sheet of paper, if not a poster board, some pictures of what you believe represent your ideal running or walking workout, and then looking at it for a few minutes every day. • Read about running or walking. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes daily to

read a related magazine, book, or website. • Listen to an interview with a runner or walker. You can find these interviews on the Web or even sometimes on running- or walking-related radio talk-shows. • Watch a video about running or walking. You can do this through videos that you buy or through videos that you access free on the Web. And unlike the creativevisualization and vision-board activities, the reading, listening, and watching activities all work passively.

How It Works

By engaging your reticular activating system, this trick “automates” your ability to find running or walking opportunities everywhere, which makes it easier to find time for your workouts. Kirk Mahoney, Ph.D., loves to walk and run, and his SpryFeet.com website provides practical research for runners and walkers. By going to www.SpryFeet.com/ Reports, you can get his FREE “Pace Tables for Runners and Walkers” special report at www. spryfeet.com, letting you look up paces needed to complete several different race distances within given duratio ns and for different micro-level-pacing methods.

What Are the Symptoms of Canine Bloat?

PET HEALTH

By Rosie Allen

What is Canine Bloat?

B

loat refers to the bloating of the stomach. Essentially it is a build up of gas in the stomach which is unable to be released. Bloat with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists 180 to 360 degrees on its axis between the esophagus and duodenum or the entrance and exit parts of the stomach. Bloat is a very serious problem in large breed dogs. When combined with the complications of GDV, bloat is a leading cause of death of dogs, second only to cancer. The exact cause of bloat is still unknown. Generally, it is believed that excessive eating and drinking of water followed by exercise can cause bloat. It is thought that exercise causes food or fluid in the stomach to cause a build up of gas. The severity of the conditions is more serious when the stomach twists upon itself within the abdomen in a clockwise rotation causing the inlet and outlet of the stomach as well as blood vessels which supply the stomach to become constricted at both ends. As a result, the constriction will cause the stomach tissue to die. In a very short time, the stomach becomes restricted of nutrients and oxygen. If not treated, the dog can die.

Dog Got Tartar? Independent researcher seeks dog owners to participate in dog tartar study that quantifies how long it takes for special natural substance used at home to remove tartar from teeth. - Anxiousness, restlessness - Attempting to vomit - Whining - Increase in heart rate

- Distended abdomen - Excessive drooling - Pale gums - Difficult breathing

What Causes Bloat?

The stomach becomes filled with gas and because of several possible factors; the dog is unable to relieve the pressure. Bloat, with GDV, is when the stomach goes into a twist. This closes both the esophagus and pylorus, preventing the dog from relieving the gas pressure which can quickly build up after a large meal. This condition is extremely fatal, causing shock, coma and eventually death. Like many other conditions which affect our dogs, the actual cause of bloat is still unknown. Several factor seem to contribute to a dogs chances of getting bloat. - Stress - Eating or drinking too fast. - Having a large deep chest - Elevated food bowls - Hereditary - Disposition - Exercise before and immediately after eating

Are All Dogs At Risk Cannine Bloat?

Canine bloat and GDV usually only affects large breed dogs, but smaller dogs are still susceptible.. It is thought that some lines of breeds are genetically at a higher risk. Though bloat can occur in puppies, it is a condition which usually occurs in adult dogs. Furthermore, male dogs are more likely to suffer from bloat than female dogs. Here is a list of some breeds that have a higher chance of being effected by bloat and GDV. - German Shepherd - Great Dane - Standard Poodle - Rottweiler - Akita - Bloodhound - Great Pyrenees - Irish Setter - Old English Sheepdog - Boxer - Golden Retriever - Irish Wolfhound - St. Bernards - Labrador Retriever - Newfoundland - Doberman

What Is the Treatment of Dog Bloat?

Canine bloat is a very serious problem. If you suspect your dog has bloat, contact your vet immediately. Every second counts! If caught and diagnosed quick enough, initial treatment will involve inserting a tube or tochar in to the stomach wall to remove the gas. If necessary, the vet will then operate, attempting to untwist the stomach. Secondary treatment will involve treating shock, dehydration, fatigue, and other complications resulting from the distension of the stomach.

Is There Any Way To Prevent Dog Bloat?

Prevention of bloat can be difficult. Because there are so many possible causes for this condition, prevention must be examined on an individual basis. If you have a dog that is at risk there are a couple of things that you can do to decrease the chances of this fatal condition. Since bloat is believed to be connected with genetics and hereditary, these preventive measures can only decrease the chances of bloat. - Do not overfeed. Feed 2-3 small meals a day. - Do not use elevated food bowls - Do not allow your dog to drink large amounts of water after eating. - Add an enzyme product to your dogs food - Keep emergency veterinary contact handy - Gastroplexy surgery Ths article only provides BASIC information about canine bloat. Your veterinarian is always your best source of health information. Rosie Allen’s website is pomeraniancentral.com

Strontium -

The Osteoporosis Cure They Want To Bury

HEALTH & NUTRITION

have been published confirming the near miraculous effects of strontium. Strontium, chemically similar to calcium, and absorbed in relatively similar amounts, is found in soil, air, water, fish, and nearly all plants. It is the most abundant mineral in seawater. We all normally consume one to five milligrams of this mineral daily without ever being aware of it. Now pure strontium is chemically unstable, but as found in nature, this mineral is never pure. In general, it is found as strontium carbonate, strontium citrate, and strontium gluconate, among other compounds. Our bodies have two opposing forces at work. The builders and the destroyers. This is normal and vital to living, but when the destroyer begins to dominate, we run into trouble. That is what happens in osteoporosis. Here we have a developing dominance of the osteoclasts, the cells that break bone down, over the osteoblasts, the cells that build bone up. And as discovered a century ago, strontium and calcium, working together, form a powerful weapon against osteoporosis, with a combined effect of slowing the

xactly 100 years ago, a German scientist found that strontium (not to be confused with strontium 90, the radioactive isotope), one of the most abundant minerals on our planet, was uniquely effective in stimulating rapid bone formation. Ten years later, another German researcher concluded that, while calcium itself was effective in mineralizing bone, its effectiveness was magnified exponentially when combined with this particular mineral. It took until 1952 for these data to be carried forward. Then, a Cornell University research report confirmed the earlier findings. In 1959, the Mayo Clinic achieved astonishingly good results in applying this research to patients with severe osteoporosis, and in 1986 a comprehensive and detailed report appeared, confirming strontium’s effectiveness at building bone and bone density. Sadly, all of this research was ignored until about five years ago when suddenly, there was an almost explosive growth of interest in this mineral. Since then, more than 400 peer reviewed articles

development of osteoclasts and accelerating the development of their beneficial adversaries, the osteoblasts. Big Pharma, never to be upstaged by nature, has been working feverishly to develop a product they can patent. What they’ve come up with is a compound they call strontium ranelate. This is nothing more than natural strontium combined with a synthetic compound called ranelic acid, which doesn’t do a whole lot more than make a patentable product. There have been a couple of very well conducted studies on its effects. They showed very positive results from the use of this patented product, but nothing superior to the natural minerals properly used. But the heavy hitters in this field are still the big money makers the pharmaceuticals are foisting off on us in the form of intensely marketed bisphosphonate drugs. They don’t work nearly as well as plain old natural strontium and calcium, taken together in relatively equal amounts, and they are getting notorious for producing some horrendous side effects.

The March 2010 Journal of Bone Mineral Research warns that the anti-osteoporosis drugs; the bisphosphonate drugs, suppress the ability of strontium to help rebuild bone - simply because these drugs essentially kill the bone in the first place. However, when a woman stops taking these patent medications, bone remodeling can commence again after a period of at least six months has elapsed. Another study conducted in the United Kingdom clearly shows the superiority of natural strontium and calcium combinations to the currently overhyped patent medicines, while leaving in question the length of time it will take for bone remodeling to resume after a patient has stopped taking bisphosphonate drugs and begun to substitute a regimen of calcium and natural strontium. Based on all the recent studies conducted on this subject, it would really seem natural to conclude that this mineral combination is an absolute must have for every post menopausal woman. For those who want to begin taking these natural products for themselves, current research seems to indicate that 340 to 680 milligrams of elemental strontium provides the best results. It is very very important to take at least an equal amount of calcium along with this mineral, and ideally the amount of calcium taken should exceed the strontium intake. For anyone thinking about trying this, a word of advice: Do not take calcium and strontium at the same time. Wait at least three hours between ingestion of these two supplements - they tend to conflict with each other if taken together. Other than that, you’re safe. “You can easily have direct contact with the Creator after the first few exercises,” said Dr. Mark Virkler, the creator of the series. He’s the founder of Christian Leadership University & Communion with God Ministries in Buffalo, New York. He’s not talking about getting a word here or there in a blue moon or in a decade. He’s talking about daily communication that unlocks the beauty of the relationship with the Lord that we were all meant to have. And he’s had thousands of people experience this on more than just a rudimentary level. It’s the real McCoy.

Prayer

Scripture says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish.…” ( Jn. 10:27,28 NASB) The Bible is full of people who heard God’s voice. What’s the difference between olden times and now? Perhaps it is just technique. But what about the possibility that the communication is from the other side, and not the Lord, you may ask?

“To receive the pure word of God, it is very important that your heart is properly focused as you become still. Your focus is the source of the intuitive flow. If you fix your eyes upon Jesus, the intuitive flow comes from Jesus. But if you fix your gaze upon a desire of your heart, the intuitive flow comes out of that desire. To have a pure flow you must become still and carefully fix your eyes upon Jesus,” he said. The fact is that God’s voice is within us. Sometimes we hear and feel it…although many of us have lost the ability to recognize His voice.

Can You Hear God’s Voice Daily?

“Although we have the Biblical promise – “My sheep hear My voice,” too many believers are starved for the intimate relationship that alone can satisfy the desire of their heart,” he said.

By Dr. Donna (ret.)

Key # 1 – Quiet your mind so you can hear God’s voice - easiest way is by doing key #2 (Heb. 2:1-2). Key # 2 - Look for vision as you pray - see yourself together with Jesus in a comfortable Gospel setting. Fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb. 12:2) Key # 3 – Recognize God’s voice as spontaneous/flowing thoughts which light upon your mind ( Jn. 7:37-39). Key # 4 - Write down the spontaneous flow of thoughts and pictures that come to you (Rev. 1:10-1l).

Absolutely!

H

ave you ever listened to a friend describe a vision or dream that could only be a Divine one, and then thought to yourself, “Why can’t I get dreams or visions? Am I such a bad person or just not worthy?” Maybe you’ve often wondered why a pastor of a church is the only one that has visions or hears from God, and what you have to do to have them, too. Or maybe you’ve wondered how you can get closer to God and have a relationship with the Creator that is closer than any relationship you have now with any of your friends. If so, then the CD Series, How to Hear God’s Voice is your answer. Now think about this for just a second. If you had daily conversations with the Lord, what would you talk about? Would you ask a lot of questions or primarily listen? Do you think those conversations would be filled with inspiration, revelation, new witty ideas that could make you money, give you encouragement, and fill you with His compassion, love and hope? Is it possible that having these types of conversations could propel your life forward in new directions, exploding them with power and potential?

According to Dr. Virkler, there are four major keys to this process. “To hear God’s voice, tune your radio to SVSJ; Stillness, Vision, Spontaneity and Journaling.

But there’s more to it than four principles. It’s the details that he explains that allow you to go from the state of “Sure, Jesus is my friend” to “Here’s what He said today…My life has changed.” These details are based on the story of Habakkuk in the Bible. The series also has an accompanying workbook that can deepen your experience to a much richer relationship with the Creator. Highly recommended, this CD series will change a Christian’s life to one where you may think, “Why didn’t I have this information years ago?” It could be the biggest boost to your spiritual health in your entire lifetime. n most weight loss programs, the primary technique used to end the battle with temptation is some type of behavior modification. Behavior modification is based on substituting an undesirable behavior for a more desirable one. For example, when trying to curb overeating, behavior modification techniques would tell you that every time you want to eat when you’re not hungry, you should find something else to do, i.e., go for a walk, read, find a healthier food to snack on, etc. Teaching people to change the actions that they take can help them get through a moment, however, the challenge with merely changing the behavior is that if we never address the reason why we want to eat when we’re not hungry in the first place, we will have to continue finding substitute behaviors the rest of our lives.

To me, this feels like a lot of work not to mention, in a sense, it’s just plain avoidance of the issue. Now don’t get me wrong, behavior modification programs have worked for many people, and yet, what I have found, is that many times, merely changing the behavior isn’t enough to get peaceful and sustainable results.

I believe if you want to end overeating, under exercising or just plain quit treating yourself poorly, you really need to need to stop avoiding and deal with the truth of what’s going on. When I have a client who is simply finding something else to do instead of eating, I always ask why he or she needs to DO anything at all. The typical response goes something like, “Well because, if I don’t do something I’ll eat! (As if the only two choices were overeating or distracting oneself )! The truth is, that this is the place at which there exists a BIG choice: to become aware or to avoid. That moment of wanting to eat when we’re not hungry holds the answer to what it is that we really want instead of the food. Because, you see, it’s really never about the food. Ever. When you allow yourself the opportunity to find out what it is that you actually want, you can truly begin to change your life, and the food

Sometimes we find we want sweetness, or love or comfort or fun and the food seems like a reasonable substitute in the moment, but when we look a little closer, there’s never a time that overeating gives us any of those things. Food is not love, or joy or comfort. The truth is it’s a cheap and short lived stand-in for the things we really crave in our lives. When you know what you truly crave in your life, put your thoughts there - on creating the things that you want and fill yourself up on them. Be busy with that, with giving yourself what you really want and need. And the fuller you are, the less you crave. Before you know it, ending overeating is no longer a struggle. It actually stops being something you’re doing and becomes something you’ve done. Karen Frechou is a Certified Life and Weight Loss Coach.
