Is Gluten Affecting Your Athletic Performance? Part 2 Sports, Excercise & Fitness

By Steve Caudle a Celiac sufferer. Celiacs have difficulty in absorbing nutrients. As such they react better to certain foods that can give an energy boost. Additionally, several very good products have been developed as supplements that are outstanding as energy boosters.

Harder to Recover You’re okay putting in 25 miles on the bike in the a.m. Yet it takes all day to recover and your evening work-out is so-so at best. After reading up on it, you realize that you need to feed your body better, so you eat an energy gel during the bike, and an energy bar and banana afterwards. You’re recovering faster.

Ever wonder if a product really works? After a workout a Celiac can very easily go into a tailspin (or during). Being so drained, it is easier for a Celiac to tell if a product actually works, provides energy and makes us feel better. It’s kind of like a test animal: if they survive, the product works! Just as important a gluten free diet is a healthier diet for all. Most gluten free foods are less processed and have naturally far more nutrients and the good news is that you don’t need to be a pro athlete that can hire a nutritionist and a cook. Good food is available.

It’s not unusual for people with a gluten problem to have a single good run in them, particularly in the morning. However, you may have depleted all your reserves and your intestines simply cannot process food fast enough for proper recovery. Energy bars are designed to enter your system fast and you will find that many of them are actually gluten free or close to it, thus the noticeable bump in recovery time. However, energy bars only go so far. Over the long run this will not work and eventually your intestines will have difficulty in absorbing even these quick foods. You definitely know you have a problem if you’re getting an upset stomach or the runs because you are eating too many quick absorption foods as they often act as a laxative. Sweating More Starting to notice that you are sweating more? Are you finding that you need to be really careful about keeping up with your fluid intake? Maybe you’ve noticed that those energy drinks really do work? Perhaps your hydration problem is a bit more severe? Remember, general fatigue is a top symptom of Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance. It could be that you’re working harder and your body is just heating up to a higher level? At first your times don’t show a problem, but then maybe you live by the motto on your t-shirt – no pain, no gain. Body Aches Run a 10 miler, then off to work? No problem, 10 years ago. Now body parts are just plain achy. Your first thought is that you’re running too much on pavement and the pounding is getting to you. Maybe, maybe not. Aches, especially in the knees for runners, are yet another symptom of gluten intolerance. 6

Stride Change In order to increase your speed you adjusted and went to a shorter, quicker stride. When you start wearing down from gluten fatigue, you cannot reach that full stride, over a period of time you make an adjustment to your stride to keep yourself on pace. If you are failing at racing, maybe it’s because that short stride you developed just can’t handle race speed? Injuries and Illness Slow to recover from an injury? Getting sick a lot? Again, classic symptoms of a gluten problem. If your body has to spend all its energy in your work-outs, there’s nothing left in reserve. The result is you get sick more often and take longer to recover from injuries. Products That Work For All Even if you do not suffer from a gluten problem, you can gain valuable product information from

Where Can I Find Gluten Free Products Unfortunately, as serious as this disease is, the current labeling laws are inadequate. Wheat must be listed on the label, but it can be disguised within the ingredients as malt, spelt, farina, enriched flour or many other names. Wheat can be found in a very large and broad range of foods from soy sauce (2nd ingredient behind water) to Rice cereal (malt flavoring). It typically takes a diagnosed person 6 months to become familiar with how to read labels. Further complicating matters is that there is no law governing what is gluten free and what is not. At this point the FDA only recommends that gluten free labeling be under 20 parts per million. It is common for products to be labeled as gluten free and far exceed this recommendation. A safe alternative is to shop at specialty markets that cater to gluten free products. Within Sacramento we are fortunate to have the Gluten Free Specialty Market (2612 J Street). All products within the store are thoroughly researched to be gluten free. Additionally, staffed by experts within the field, they are able to answer all your questions and make product recommendations that are not only safe but enjoyable to eat. If you are in the Sacramento area stop, by the Gluten Free Specialty Market located at: 2621 J Street, Sacramento or call (916) 442-5241. Visit my website at www.glutenfreespecialty.com. H&F

OUR ADVERTISING WORKS! E F F E C T I V E

“Hello...I’ve been anxious to let you know that the article (front page) in your Oct.’07 issue has certainly helped my business. My webmaster has even posted it on the homepage of my web site – and, it’s brought nothing but the best information concerning Life Sources, Inc. to the public than any other publication in quite sometime. I want to take this opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally you for making this possible”—and, a special “hi” to Dr. Donna for writing such a fantastic article. You folks are the best.

Sincerely, Dr. McCreery

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine, Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughout Sacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. Thank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services. Sincerely, Brett A. Gottlieb, D.C.

EDITOR’S NOTES Fall fun has already begun! Fall parties have been cropping up everywhere for harvest fairs, Octoberfests, Halloween, and the Jewish holidays. Don’t miss out! Friends and family are precious and any chance to lay down a new memory into the brain about celebrations of any kind is one that is cherished forever! Don’t let your Halloween season get too crazy, though! Read what a paranormal investigator has to say about messing around with spirits and the paranormal on page 31. Great insight from someone who’s seen what happens firsthand. You’ll find plenty of action at the business that Valerie has and won’t need any ghost entertainment. See page 10 for an incredible time and the opportunity to develop a body that looks like hers. By the way, being in the health and fitness industry my whole life, I’d say there is no comparison to the results she gets just from her style of dancing. Fall doesn’t mean you need an extra layer of fat around you, so if you’re still stuck in bad eating habits, this issue will give you different approaches. Take them; don’t be complacent. Have a great fall! Dr. Donna, Editor

Luckily this condition can be resolved by correcting the atlas misalignment. However, not every chiropractor is trained in getting this vertebra back into proper alignment. NUCCA is a technique in the chiropractic profession, which corrects this misalignment. A NUCCA chiropractor takes very specific x-rays of the atlas vertebrae.

If you are interested in seeing if the VDP can help your condition, I am offering one free treatment to the first 5 callers. My office number is 916-965-7155. If you are not one of the first 5 callers you will receive a 30% discount on your first treatment if you make an appointment by 10/15/2010.

Analysis of these x-rays allows the NUCCA chiropractor to develop a very specific formula for correction. This results in a permanent resolution to the problem rather than just temporary relief. Therefore, even if you have already tried chiropractic for your condition only to be disappointed with the results there is still hope for you. The atlas misalignment requires a very precise adjustment for a person to experience symptomatic relief that lasts. NUCCA provides that type of adjustment. If you want more information about the NUCCA technique you can visit my website a painfreelife.net. You can also give my office a call for a free consultation and exam to determine if I can help your specific condition. Make an appointment at my office by 11/30/2011 and you will receive a free consultation and examination. If I determine that I can help your condition I will give you a 30 percent discount on all x-rays and treatments that are required to get you well again. Please call our office at (916) 965-7155 today or visit us on the web at www.painfreelife.net. Just mention that you heard about Dr. Gottlieb from Health & Fitness Magazine to receive this offer. The Psychology of Exercise E

xercise is essential in the prevention and management of weight- and health-related issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Yet, as many as 65% of American adults refrain from engaging in regular leisure-time physical activity or exercise.

Contemplation is the stage in which people are aware of their behavioral problems and have it in mind to take action soon, usually within the next 6 months. They are more informed of the benefits and costs of changing, which may result in ambivalence and stagnancy for some time.

they can uphold long-term behavior change.

O

nce you have assessed your readiness for change, tailored exercise programs can be developed. Research has revealed several activities, also known as processes of change,

In a society where so many of us are fettered to a sedentary lifestyle at work, the need for regular exercise has become crucial to our health and wellness. However, despite the known risks of sedentary behavior, our insatiable desire for instant gratification has led us too often to avoid physical exercise in lieu of Jersey Shore reruns and fast food meals. It isn’t until complications manifest from years of complacency and avoidance that we admit there is a problem. It’s as if our will to live has become our will to play dead. Regardless of why you refrain from engaging in exercise, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is a psychological tool that can help you identify where you are in terms of changing your behavior and can adequately track and assist in your progress. A model that addresses your emotions, cognitions, and behaviors, TTM has been successfully applied to many problem behaviors, from smoking cessation and organizational change, to exercise adoption. TTM identifies five distinct stages that we progress through when changing a behavior: Pre-Contemplation is characterized by having no intention of taking action in the foreseeable future. People in this stage are usually ignorant of the consequences of their behaviors or they have been discouraged by past failed attempts.

track just by the simple act of reading this magazine! Contemplation to Preparation: Research shows that self-reevaluation is an effective strategy here; self-reevaluation is the act of assessing how you feel about your health and then clarifying how your current behaviors correspond with your value system. For example, if you discover that you care about fitness but do not exercise, it’s time to become more active. Preparation to Action: Action plans should be prepared here. This would be a good time to consult with your doctor and perhaps schedule a session with a personal trainer to develop a safe and effective exercise plan. Willpower is also important, and the sense of autonomy and confidence required to make changes in your life can be enhanced through support groups and exercise partners. Group exercise classes are also beneficial as they are often structured with these components in mind.

Preparation is characterized by intending to act in the near future (usually within the next month) and preparing a plan of action, such as joining a gym. Action is the stage in which people make specific behavior modifications to their lifestyles. Congratulations are in order! However, relapse risk is high in this stage, so vigilance should be maintained. Maintenance is characterized by effective behavior change for at least six months and working to prevent potential relapse. People in this stage are usually confident that

which aid progression through TTM’s stages. The following strategies will help ensure that you are doing the right things at the right times: Pre-Contemplation to Contemplation and Preparation: Increasing your awareness through education and feedback is an effective tool during these stages. It is far more difficult to ignore your health as you become more insightful regarding the benefits of exercise and the immediate costs of sedentary lifestyles. You’re already on the right

Action to Maintenance: Reinforcement including positive rewards, self-affirmations, and recognition of success can help you to continue exercising. By rewarding your healthier behaviors, you are strengthening your commitment to and success in your exercise program. We hope you will use some of these inexpensive, self-instructional strategies in developing and maintaining your own exercise program. As with any behavioral change, maintaining a lasting transformation will require your dedication and perseverance. Consequently, always remember that being idle may be a short way to death, but staying active is a sure way to a healthier life! H&F

Autism: Treat the Cause! A

inflammation believed to restrict blood flow to regions of autistic children’s brains that control speech, or improve its ability to absorb oxygen, he tells in ScientificAmerican.com. “We’re not saying it’s a cure,” Rossignol said, “but … if you can improve understanding so a kid doesn’t run in front of a car, or improve sleep, that would be a benefit.”

s you read this you are breathing 20% oxygen. Imagine that you are autistic with an impaired brain; might it be difficult in this environment to focus, think, learn, and to socialize? Might you become agitated in everyday life as the metabolism of your brain fights to accomplish even small tasks? As autism specifically affects the mitochondria of each cell, and as oxygen drives this electron transport chain to make the cell function normally, you can certainly imagine how important oxygen is, especially with an autistic child.

While the study only treated and tracked the children for four weeks, kids who receive the same number of sessions outside of research settings often remain better for longer, Rossignol says. Others get better after 80 sessions, according to Robert Hendren, executive director of the University of California Davis M.I.N.D. Institute, a large autism research center.

Now, imagine once more an autistic child in an environment with 100% oxygen. And imagine how oxygen can “signal” and revitalize the mitochondria and wake up these cells to function more normally that last even outside the chamber. The gentle pressure of 1.5 atmospheres increases the perfusion rate 3 times and increases oxygen content 10 times! That’s what hyperbaric oxygen therapy does. And that is how it helps autistic children. Autistic individuals have decreased brain blood flow at baseline; when autistic children pay attention to a task, they often do not have a compensatory increase in brain blood flow as in typical children. This is shown in brain scans, which depict most of the brain not receiving oxygen, including the temporal lobe which is associated with speech, motor skills and cognitive ability. Only a small region in the center of the brain was highlighted with oxygen and any activity at all. Brain activity is directly affected by oxygenation. As oxygen reaches parts of the brain in someone with Autism, cognitive function improves including memory. Clinical studies have demonstrated that as saturation levels increase, there are enhancements in neurological function and cognitive performance, including improved performance on attention, reaction time and word recall. Several uncontrolled studies of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in children with autism have reported clinical improvements. BMC Pediatrics performed a multi center, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial to assess the efficacy of hyperbaric treatment in children with autism. 12

Why not treat the cause and finally see some lasting results? The randomized, double-blind controlled study of 62 children found that those who received 40 hours of treatment over a month were less irritable, more responsive when people spoke to them, made more eye contact and were more sociable than kids who didn’t receive it. They were also less sensitive to noise; some autistic children experience a kind of sensory overload from loud sounds and background noise. The most improvement was observed in kids older than five. The study included children ages two to seven who had milder autism. It’s not clear why the treatment helped, says study co-author Dan Rossignol, a family physician at the International Child Development Resource Center in Melbourne, Fla., which treats children with developmental disorders. But the atmospheric pressure may reduce

on Staley isn’t the usual college graduate from Ferris State University in Big Rapids. He attended four different colleges/universities on six different campuses, worked a full-time job to pay his own way, and changed majors several times. His 4-year degree took him an extra 5 years. “No matter what, I told myself I will not give up!” Staley said. And he didn’t; in 1994, he graduated. That same persistent attitude helped him through another big obstacle in life – weight gain, high cholesterol and high triglycerides in middle life. And whereas research proves that 95% of exercise programs fail, and diets don’t seem to work either, Staley used his college mindset to crack the fitness code. His book, Fit Mind Fit Body, became an Amazon.com bestseller in two categories – creative visualization and mind-body connection on Tues. Sept. 20th. “The whole approach for diet and exercise is wrong,” Staley said. “It’s backwards. Builders

don’t put a roof on a house until the foundation is set. Working on diet and exercise first is like building the roof of a house first. Your mindset and habits must be the foundation, and when they are, the usual struggles in dieting and exercising diminish.”

It gives you a whole different way of looking at how you can make your mindset effective and consistent, making fitness a no-brainer.”

Once he harnessed the power of his subconscious mind to change his own mindset, it became easy to create healthy habits. The extra 40 pounds around his middle melted away.

Fit Mind Fit Body does not include a specific diet or exercise plan; yet weight loss occurs naturally once the principles are followed. This self-help fitness guide includes a 30-day action plan and a 3-month email coaching program, to ensure that the reader creates empowering health habits.

But that wasn’t the only thing he used the power of his subconscious mind and strong inner drive to accomplish. Since Nov. 14, 2006, Staley has stuck to his exercise program – for over 1780 consecutive days; proof that when the mind is re-programmed, anything is possible with the body.

“The tactics in my book work for anything in life, not just accomplishing health goals. Once someone discovers how to master their mind, they won’t ever revert back to old habits that led them to behaviors they don’t want. Readers love the changes in their body, health and life when they crack this brain code!”

Dr. Bob Uslander, M.D. of La Jolla, CA agrees. “Fit Mind, Fit Body is an incredible book. It‘s very different than other approaches I’ve seen.

Lower Breast Cancer Risk With These Grocery Items

M

ore news on diet and breast cancer risk: Two studies - one on veggies and another on coffee have brought attention to some new superfoods that might actually help lower breast cancer risk. Both research projects examined freely made lifestyle choices when it comes to drinking coffee and eating certain vegetables and the impact these choices might have on future risk. The study on vegetables was conducted by a team who made use of lab rats to see whether a specific compound (apigenin) impacted the formation of tumors when introduced into a rat’s body compared to rats who were not given the substance.

Apigenin is naturally part of foods like parsley, apples, celery, oranges and some nuts, as well as other foods, and appears not just to slow the growth of tumors but it also reduced the amount of tumors in the body. Keeping some minimum levels of apigenin in the blood seems to be beneficial in terms of breast cancer risk reduction. So next time you see a garnish of celery or parsley, it might be a good idea to have a taste. The study on coffee took place in Sweden and was conducted by a team using a study group of women with an age range between 50 to 74 years old and they were studied in two groups, one with cancer of the breast, and the other without. Participants were matched for age, and the team saw that those who regularly drank 5 or more cups of coffee a day had a lower risk of estrogen receptor negative breast cancers. Other studies have brought similar results. Here are some other interesting numbers that come from the two studies... • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast. • 30 is the BMI number where women are considered to be obese, which is a recognized risk factor that’s identified by the study on coffee and many other studies as increasing your risk of developing this form of cancer. • 45% of premenopausal women who have breast cancer have the estrogen receptor negative form of the disease; this was the form of disease examined in the study on coffee. • 51 is the average age a U.S. woman will go through menopause. Those working on the coffee study suggest that the age a woman starts menopause as another key factor in breast cancer risk. • 200,000+ women in the U.S. are given a diagnosis of breast cancer • 6 to 10 million women are prescribed hormone replacement therapy annually in the U.S. The study on veggies was looking at how to cut the chances of this form of cancer associated with these medications. Talk with your doctor about how to lower breast cancer risk, and be aware that preventing disease is always easier than treating it once it happens. The good thing to take from these two studies is that there are things you can do, actions you can take, to defend yourself against breast cancer. It’s up to you. Aphrodisiacs Could Save The World: Part 2

I

t would be natural that before the modern industrial pharmaceutical age, nature would have provided certain products (fruits, vegetables, roots, berries, and herbs) to also enhance and stimulate us for sustaining sexuality as well for the survival of the human population. We call them aphrodisiacs. Remember, humanity evolved from a hunter-gathering community and many roots, herbs, berries and raw organic products were the primary staple and many were aphrodisiacs then and still are today. The Amazon has been one of the best places to find these. Brazilian root guarana has been used for centuries as a stimulant for sexuality. Catuaba is another that is used for impotence and enhances libido. Muira Puama reduces stress and can be used to enhance tumesence. It is a good subsitute for those who cannot tolerate yohimbe or yohimbine. Yohimbe comes from the bark of trees primarily from Africa and are used to enhance libido and improve blood flow for men with erectile dysfunction. It has been used by pharmaceutical companies for that purpose. Brazilian and Korean Ginseng have been used as aphrodisiacs. When combined with DHEA, a testosterone derivative, they can act to enhance male sexuality, but it also works well with women. A botanical form of DHEA is found in 7-keto. Also in South American countries, Blue Passion has been used especially by women to enhance libido. Lepedium Meyenii (Epipedium) is another useful aphrodisiac. It is known is some cultures as Maca. It was called the “natual Viagara” because it appears to work like the drug by inhibiting PDE-5, which blocks the inhibitors of substances creating nerve stimuli for making an erection. It acts as an alkolid also and may enhance nitrous oxide. Some other aphrodisiacs are Tribulus Terrestis, which is an alkaloid, can enhance libido.

Other products such as Damiana increase oxygen to the genitals. Other aphrodisiacs are Don Shea, Star Anise, Licorice, and red clover. Male erectile dysfunction has become a more prevalent issue in our society and the medical establishment has become more aware of it. Many circulation problems such as diabetes (microvascular/macrovascular disease), cardiovascular disease, and high cholesterol levels have contributed to this. New evidence is showing that the problem with circulation and

blood flow can be addressed with making more nitrous oxide with amino acids such as L-arginine along with vitamin B-6, 5-HTP and choline. How it works is still being figured out. Today we are seeing evidence that certain foods have aphrodisic power as well. Ginger acts as a stimulant that increases blood circulation, which may help with male erections. Avocados have vitamin B6, which enhances testosterone. But, perhaps none have received more attention than oysters and chocolates.

Chocolates are both a stimulant and aphrodisiac. Dark chocolates also have antioxidants. Chocolates have a chemical called Theobromine, which gives a euphoric sensation caused by tryptophan. This amino acid is the precursor to serotonin, which causes the sensation of ecstasy. Why do women especially with terrible cramps crave chocolates? It appears that chocolate has magnesium, which helps reduces muscle tension in uterine muscles and associated headaches. But, the chemical PEA or phenylethylalamine enhances libido, and enhances sense of smell for those pheromones. Theobromine has sort of a “cannabis-like” effect, which gives the sense of tranquility. The methylxanthines heighten erotic tactile stimuli. Some Canadian scientists have found evidence that chocolates may stimulate receptors for cocaine as well. There are many reasons here why the Aztecs called chocolates the “food of the gods”. When it comes to oysters, there just might be a squirt of science to them. Science data are showing that oysters contain a chemical that raises testosterone. The data shows how D-aspartic acid and NMDA both act as aphrodisiacs. The zinc and iodine may enhance sexuality, production of semen and sex hormones. What nature may have provided are mechanisms that assured enough fat from the climatic, emotional and time factors that affect us and lead us to eating more. More cholesterol leads to more production of testosterone and estrogen. The plants and herbs that enhance testosterone, estrogen or biochemicals that promote sexuality could potentially be that safety net so that human beings would continue to enhance productivity for another generation as well as enjoy the pleasure of it as well. Dr. Marcus Wells is a medical doctor with an M.D. from the University of Missouri and also has a Master’s in Public Health from Emory University. His book, Take It Off With Thermogenix, discusses natural, organic and herbal ways to maintain a healthier lifestyle and can be ordered at amazon. com, at most bookstores or at www.tgx360.com. H&F

Perfume Could Cure Breast Cancer By Carrie Ott

B

reast cancer is a tragic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Even if someone does not have cancer, the effects of it can be felt regardless. Most people have a friend, family member, or neighbor whose life has been touched in some way by the disease. That’s why Delville, a famous perfumer, decided to take a stand against breast cancer by developing a perfume to cure breast cancer. The perfume, called Promise Me, donates a substantial amount from each purchase to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a well-known and innovative breast cancer research and treatment facility. Each purchase of a Promise Me perfume allows the foundation to get a considerable donation, and the money will be used to: • Fund research into destroying cancer cells • Educate men and women about how to cope with cancer • Diagnose the disease in its earlier stages • Treat cancer patients and give them a second chance at life • Promise Me is an amazing idea that allows average people to donate to the cause while still getting something for themselves in return. If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what a perfume to cure breast cancer smells like. Promise Me has multiple, complex layers of scent that incorporate delicate rosewood and orchid laced with zestier scents like mandarin. Delville dedicated himself to creating a perfume that represented life, joy, and hope. Promise Me is his attempt to bring breast cancer awareness to the forefront of world attention. Thankfully, Promise Me has caught on with the public and is doing well enough. However, there is the potential to do a lot more for cancer patients in the future. That’s why public participation in a program like Promise Me is so important. Did you know that breast cancer occurs in men as well? Yes, it is true, and it is much more common than one might think. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor.

Go to breakfast with your friends in the morning, all of you go have a screening, then spend the rest of the day having fun! With simple steps like this, the terrible disease can usually be avoided all together. But for those who were not so fortunate, Promise Me is a ray of hope that gives patients a second chance at life. What better way to donate than to receive something for yourself in addition to the satisfaction of knowing that you can save someone’s life. You can support a perfume to cure breast cancer at www.squidoo.com/promise-me-fragrance. Promise Me, a perfume designed with the sole purpose of curing breast cancer, is the best way to donate to breast cancer research. Dear Mitch, I’m one of those who TRIES oh so hard to live “consciously”, and I need your help, please. My challenge: Halloween! Starting with “Trick Or Treating”, which is TRULY offensive if one bothers to think about it! And, as a mother of three, I’m really torn! I bet most of your readers will think I’m a nutcase. Other than my more conscious, spiritual friends, EVERYONE seems to participate in whatever our society offers without thought for the messages and values we’re unconsciously supporting! Halloween’s primary activity is “Trick Or Treating”! OK, that would be ringing someone’s doorbell so you can threaten them with a “Trick” if they don’t hand you a “Treat”! AS IF our neighbors “owed” us a “treat”, particularly because we show up at their doorstep dressed as a witch or President Clinton, Lady Gaga, or whatever! Plus, Mitch, Halloween is a celebration of death and a disturbing humiliation of the spirits of our ancestors. My family and circle of friends already feel centered by our unique, non-commercial versions of “Christmas” celebrations! Oddly, it seems harder to step out from the crowd on “Halloween”! HELP ME! Namaste, Agnostic, Spiritual and Raw McMinnville, Oregon Dear AS&R! I HAD to keep your signature. It’s great! Thomas Jefferson noted, “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.” Since its foundation, our country has struggled with the paradoxes inherent to the concepts of God, religion, individuality and paradox. Two huge, generally unacknowledged aspects hovering over many of our controversial issues

are the realities of human diversity and vulnerability. What is healthy for one person kills another, particularly due to changes over time (i.e. dairy products). We feel duped when we learn that some activities, products or entities (like tobacco) were sold as benign or “good”, only to find that the manufacturers always knew they were selling something inherently destructive. Some things, like extra-relational flirting, are generally very destructive while a very limited part of the population uses it to support a healthy relationship. Hey, a 55 MPH speed limit is waaaay too slow for some drivers but more than fast enough for others! Enter those who strive to live consciously. They want to turn off our culture’s omni-present, ever-demanding distractions and ultimately spiritually-deficient activities and products. They want to be available for a more valuable, purposedriven life! Ironically, this choice generally creates a perceived division between us who choose this life and the general population who chooses to mindlessly follow the trends and traditions. So, those who are most consciously living know there’s no “one way fits all”, and our very mission is to EMBRACE PARADOX!! And then, there’s the 1,330-year-old celebration of Halloween. The Celts had thought that the presence of the other worldly spirits made it easier for the Druids to make predictions about the future, so they dug Halloween as a portal between our perceived reality and whatever is going on beyond. That being said, do you think those who currently doth protest really have a grasp on WHAT THEY’RE PROTESTING?! That being said, I get it. Why someone might step back and look at the messages we perpetuate! I’m with YOU: No more keeping up with the Joneses. No more doin’ just because everyone else is doin’ it!

What do you think these challenging times are about, spiritually speaking? Consider the possibilities. It’s time NOW to evaluate what YOU are doing with the precious LIFE you’ve been given. What a Diagnosis of Breast Cancer By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C.), Editor

E

nduring chemotherapy or radiation for breast cancer can be the most difficult time experienced in one’s lifetime.

But there’s something that isn’t included in medical treatment that needs to be addressed if you want to overcome breast cancer. This is something that I’ve noticed while setting up nutritional protocols for those with breast cancer over the years.

Emotional Mastery is Critical One of the things missing is addressing both the thought processes and the emotions that occur when the initial diagnosis is given and in the three days that follow. How you react to an event such as a diagnosis, can set the stage for healing – or non-healing. Think about what happens when you hear bad news about your child. If you allow yourself to get frantic, panic and think about the worst possible scenario that could result, then you have just complicated the situation. You’ve given energy to the negative aspects of what’s

happening, and what you focus on, you will get more of. The same thing happens with a diagnosis of cancer – or any disease for that matter. The longer you stay in a state of panic and wondering what’s going to happen, imagining the worst, the more misery you bring upon yourself. What Your Diagnosis Means In natural healing, a diagnosis of breast cancer – or any other cancer – means one thing: get busy! And when you’re busy, you don’t have time to sit around panicking. There are things to do to facilitate your own healing, things that haven’t been addressed before in your life.

The Get Busy List for Those With Breast Cancer Here’s a list of some of those things. 1. Your Faith in a Higher Power A cancer diagnosis means you must confront the possibility of dying and being somewhere for eternity. Are you ready for that moment?

Many women desire to develop a closer relationship with a Higher Power, and want to do things to show more love for people in their lives. Even simple things such as words of encouragement and blessing can be a way to show more love to others and go a long way in creating healing. To strengthen your spiritual relationship, you will need time for prayer; group prayer, family prayer, distant healing prayer, and individual prayer. Refuse to let the busyness of medical treatment take away time from prayer. While you are strengthening your relationship with a Higher Power, search for scriptures that have proclaimed you are healed. Focusing on these will keep your mind busy with what it feels like to have total health. 2. Forgiveness and Repentance It’s well known that there’s a “cancer personality” associated with the disease. Experts report that at the core of a cancer personality is a lack of forgiveness and a hardened heart. Every human is subject to developing bitterness and resentment about things that happen in life. If you catch yourself saying things like, “If only Sally had said ___, it would have been better…” or “Who does he think he is to say ____ (or do xyz)?” or “I’m so hurt by _____”, then you are carrying a suitcase of hurts that are weighing you down and contributing to the production of disease. Get free of them. The process of freeing yourself from them can be as simple as making a list of them, going into a prayer room, and asking to be enlightened can change your perspective on what happened. Also ask for enlightenment about how you contributed to the situation and repent. Do this for every scenario. Some people imagine the healing white light of a Higher Powers’ love on each of these scenarios. When you can smile and embrace the person who wronged you, your heart is healed. 3. Preparing & Keeping Your Body Fit Cancer patients should not start a workout program; the drain on the body would be too great.

Really Means But you still can do exercises that improve flexibility. It may be possible to still go for a walk on a daily basis. You won’t be trying to walk a mile in record time, but taking in the fresh air of a forest has been found to improve the immune system for up to a month 4. Cleansing the Body In cancer, the liver is often overwhelmed with the need for detoxification. Our environment is 100 times more toxic than in our grandparents’ time, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Natural healing protocols of cleansing the colon, liver, kidneys and blood are always helpful in removing toxins related to disease. 5. Nourishing the Body The American Cancer Association has agreed that selenium deficiency contributes to the production of cancer. Other nutrient deficiencies will also decrease the efficiency and capacity of your immune system to kill pathogens and detoxify carcinogenic compounds. Taking a multi-vitamin is not enough. It takes time to raise levels of nutrients that are in deficiency. At one cancer clinic in Arizona, every patient was found to be so deficient in vitamin C that an IV of 46 grams a day was needed for 2 weeks. What are you low in? You won’t know unless you have tests done for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. What is your vitamin D level? If deficient, this can create changes in the genes to turn on disease, even cancer. Get busy and turn them back! One way to screen for mineral deficiencies and heavy metal toxicities is a hair analysis. Medical professionals generally don’t order this test although forensic departments will use them to determine cause of death. Why wait until we’re dead? Why not find out what really is happening inside your body with the essential elements of life? When faced with a diagnosis of cancer, the worst possible thing to do is to think that cancer treatment is enough. Do something extra every day to facilitate your healing. Take steps towards God and accept the answers that show up along the way. Your healing is waiting. Dr. Donna can be reached at (916) 649-8323 or at DrDonna@fastermac.net. H&F

THE MERCURY MINUTE • October 2011

12 Signs of the Zodiac By Michael Mercury

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You have been experiencing a tremendous amount of change for the past year and a half. This is due in part, to the planet Saturn traveling to the sign of Libra. Libra represents authority and challenges your life. If you’re in a relationship or marriage that is no longer working, then you must face this fact and move on with your life. Pay attention to your needs; let go of the past. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) You have Jupiter transiting through your 7th house of relationships. This could be a wonderful time for a deep connection with an ongoing relationship that you’re in at this time. Work could be challenging, or you might find yourself suddenly moving into a new direction. When you do what you love then you live for a living, which is better than working for a living. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) As Neptune moves into your 4th house of home in the year 2012, you consider moving from where you are residing. Pluto has entered your 2nd house of money, property and resources. You are going to learn the lesson that life is not about what you own, but what you do with your life. You’re going to be challenged when it comes to investments. Keep a light touch to all that you do. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Since 2008, Pluto entered your sign of Capricorn for the first time in 248 years. You are entering a period in your life when you are changing to an evolutionary process that is going to change you forever. The way you used to live can no longer be sustained. You have noticed a shift in your life in the past few years; the sooner you own up to your new growth, the better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb 18) This year on March 11, the planet Uranus entered Aries for the first time in 84 years. This will bring sudden and unexpected changes in your way of communicating. You may expand your living situation or move altogether. Saturn is traveling to the crown of your chart, and this brings the possibility for opportunity and acknowledgment for your work.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Some of you are on the verge of making a major shift in your life. Some may have already made the change and are discovering a new way of becoming yourself. Your intuition has been extremely high lately, and it is important to listen to your inner voice. This means to act on that impulse which is guiding you to become your genuine-self. ARIES (March 21-April 19) This year the planet Uranus entered into Aries back in March for the first time in 84 years; there’s an exciting 7 years in store for you. You find yourself restless during the changes happening to you. Relationships will come and go. You have an opportunity for expansion when it comes to financial resources. Romance is highlighted. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You are going to be experiencing a double-sided sword; on one side, you are supported for work and health. On the other side, challenges may take something away from you. Everything happens for your benefit; the key is to learn the value of what has occurred. Stay flexible for best ways to deal with the unexpected. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) There is a great emphasis on transformation and new friendships. Learn to live beyond duality, stop hesitating when it comes to making decisions. The best way is to listen to your heart but you must act on that inner voice. All the signs of the zodiac have fundamental lessons that must be adhered to for further growth. You have a great intellect, so use it to your advantage.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are experiencing a major change in your life like never before. Employment and health issues are certainly going to be a consideration. Awareness is one of the major considerations for your best approach to your life. Some of you will find yourself being promoted into a dream position. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The planet Saturn is in your 2nd house of money, property and resources; money will be tight. However, do not let this area of your life be a dominant factor concerning your happiness. Life is not about what you own but what you do for a living. If you want to embrace security, as John Lilly, the 17th century, Christian astrologer used to say, ”embrace change.”

October 6 – Daylight Savings Time ends in the U.S. October 11 – The Full Moon in Aries 18 degrees at 7:06 p.m. PDT This can be an explosive time for pent-up emotions.. Pluto in Capricorn is square to Uranus in Aries; combined with the Moon in Aries can bring unexpected shift in your mood, and actions can be surprising. If there is going to be a major weather-related incident, it comes now more than likely, due to the shift of the gravitational pull from the close proximity of the moon with the earth. Mars in Leo and Venus in Scorpio are in a square that brings out the best or worst of a relationship.

Exposure to Elevated Levels of Indoor Mold Can Cause Severe Health Problems by Phillip Fry

The top twelve mold health problems, according to the U.S. Government’s General Accounting Office “Indoor Mold” report (Sept. 30, 2008), which summarized thirty-two (32) federal government mold studies and reports, are: 1. Asthma, asthma triggers, or asthma symptoms (such as episodes or attacks) 2. Upper respiratory tract symptoms 3. Eye symptoms 4. Skin symptoms 5. Allergies or allergic reactions 6. Wheeze 7. Cough 8. Difficulty breathing, trouble breathing, or shortness of breath 9. Infections (including those affecting people who have chronic lung disease). 10. Adverse effects to the nervous system 11. Fungal colonization or opportunistic infections in immune-compromised individuals 12. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Ninety percent of all chronic sinus problems are caused by exposure to mold, according to a Mayo Clinic study. Mold-sensitive individuals can experience health difficulties after only a few hours to a few days of being in a mold-infested building. People differ significantly in their sensitivity and health reaction to mold exposure. Prolonged exposure to mold infestation cause such serious medical problems as chronic fatigue-like symptoms; immune suppression; central nervous system dysfunction (vertigo, memory failure, irritability, concentration, and verbal dysfunction); gastro-intestinal tract, heart, liver, and kidney damage; and even cancer (caused by carcinogenic mold mycotoxins), according to E. Johanning, M.D.; P. Landsgergis, Ph.D., Clinical Findings Related to Indoor Fungal Exposure. Aspergillosis is an infection, growth, or caused by exposure to the commonly-found Aspergillus mold, resulting in serious lung diseases such as:

• Pulmonary Aspergillosis (allergic bronchopulmonary type) that usually develops in people who already have lung problems (such as asthma or cystic fibrosis); • Aspergilloma, which is a growth (fungus ball) that develops in an area of previous lung disease or lung scarring (such as tuberculosis or lung abscess); and • Pulmonary Aspergillosis (invasive type) that is a serious infection with pneumonia that can spread to other parts of the body, but almost exclusively in people with weakened immune systems. Source: National Institutes of Health. Anecdotally (e.g., in the famous CBS Dan Rather 48 hours mold report about brain damage to the husband and son of Melinda Ballard because of living in their Stachybotrysinfested Dripping Springs, Texas, house), some mold and health professionals believe that exposure to the toxic mold species Stachybotrys chartarum can cause headaches and damage the mold victims’ ability to think and remember. Over a 5-year period, one Chicago family complained of headaches, sore throats, flu-like symptoms, recurring colds, diarrhea, fatigue, dermatitis and general malaise. Air sampling of this home revealed spores of Stachybotrys. The fungus was found growing on moist organic debris in an uninsulated cold air duct and on some wood fiber ceiling material. The home had a chronic moisture problem that favored mold growth. Extracts from the duct debris and contaminated building materials were toxic to test animals. When the mold problem was

corrected, the family’s health symptoms disappeared. One controlled study concluded that exposure to Stachybotrys chartarum and Aspergillus versicolor was responsible for various pulmonary diseases among office works in a water-damaged building. See Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 1998: 40: 241-249. The following individuals appear to be at higher risk for adverse health effects of molds, according to the California Department of Health: infants and children, elderly, immune compromised patients (people with HIV infection, cancer chemotherapy, liver disease, etc.), pregnant women, and individuals with existing respiratory conditions, such as allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity, and asthma. Protect your health by: (1) preventing mold growth by promptly fixing roof, window, plumbing and basement leaks; (2) complete drying of flooded rooms within 24 hours; (3) quarterly cleaning inside window air conditioners and central heating/ cooling systems; and (4) looking for and removing all molds in your home and workplace. MEN’S HEALTH

Low Libido and Male Menopause

Signs & Symptoms and What You Can Do which only improves performance but does not increase libido, there are four areas men can assess to increase their sex drive and performance. Diet: Cleaning up the diet can have a dramatic effect on hormone balance. For instance, soy is ubiquitous in the diet. Processed meats are often combined with soy because it’s so much less expensive than meat and manufacturers do a great job of making soy taste just like meat. If one looks at ingredient labels on anything in a box or wrapper, they will see soy listed about 95 percent of the time. One of the problems with soy is how estrogenic it is in the body, and estrogen blocks testosterone function. This is true for women as well; however, the effect is more dramatic in men. as your “Johnson” fallen and can’t get up? Lower sex drive, mood swings, weight gain, decline in mental sharpness, fatigue, loss of muscle mass and erectile dysfunction are common symptoms of andropause. Andropause is the male equivalent to a female’s menopause and is noticeable in men older than 50, but can be diagnosed in patients as early as in their 20s. While hormonal decline is an age-related process, the underlying causes in men with such symptoms can include dietary factors, certain vitamin deficiencies and other lifestyle habits like alcohol and chronic stress. Chronic stress can lead to adrenal insufficiency, which in turn affects testosterone production. Alcohol acts like estrogen in the body and estrogen blocks testosterone function. Excessive alcohol intake can also cause erectile dysfunction. But before popping the top on a vial of Viagra,

Exercise: Estrogen is stored in fat cells and this adds to the ‘estrogen burden’ in the body. Losing weight will also, of course, improve one’s body image and they are more likely to feel amorous when they feel slim and sexy. Zinc: Supplement with zinc (25-50mg a day), especially if one tends to sweat a lot. People lose zinc in their sweat, and zinc naturally helps to prevent testosterone from metabolizing into other hormones in the body. Hormone Replacement: Yes, men may need hormone replacement with andropause just as a woman does with menopause. Though synthetic hormones can increase risk of cancer and blood clots, for example, bio-identical hormones are a different story and can provide hormonal balance and optimization. Overall in assessing andropause and the associated symptoms of low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, decline in mental sharpness, and loss of muscle

mass, find a physician who is willing to invest time in you and your lifestyle. The bigger picture evaluation may reveal simple nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, dietary habits, toxins in the body, overgrowth of yeast in the GI tract and hormonal imbalances that influence andropause and those associated symptoms. Simplistically speaking, when the engine light comes on in your car do you want a mechanic to simply turn off the light or fix the cause of the problem? Before going the route of performance enhancing drugs take the time to improve in the areas of diet, exercise, zinc intake and bio-identical hormones so that you can live a healthy and potent life. Learn the SECRET to Simple Dieting by Bobbie Freiberg

F

or over 50 years, I have struggled with weight loss. I honestly think I tried every diet out there and bought almost every cream, pill and devise for the hope of getting rid of any of my excess pounds! I had plenty of excuses, too. I was going through menopause, my thyroid was probably slow and the camera always adds tons of weight, so I am really not that heavy. My clothes were limited since I refused to wear a size 14, but the stretchy size 12 worked for me!

Struggling with weight loss became a frustrated hobby. It didn’t seem fair that there were people around me, eating lots of food and looking great while I was constantly dieting. I would exercise each day, eat lots of salads, skip dessert as much as possible, and still I hit 180 lbs on the scale!

THIS STORY HAS A HAPPY ENDING! At the age of 50, I did lose 45lbs in less than seven months. I actually didn’t even feel like I was dieting, but the scale and my clothes confirmed that I was on my way to a thinner me! I believe I stumbled upon a miracle diet!!

Dr. Steven Rosenberg experimented with me using a device called a calorimeter. This is a scientific method of determining the best burn within a body. The results confirmed that if you want to lose weight, you need to limit your fats to no more than 15 grams per day, and your carbohydrates to no more than 150 grams per day (That’s more than toast with your omelet, a turkey sandwich for lunch, wine with dinner and ice cream for dessert!)

When you go to the store the first few times, treat it as a treasure hunt. You have to read labels to find the items that fit your taste, but once you get these down, they will become staples on your shopping list. This is a very easy lifestyle for everyone in the family. Congratulations on your weight loss journey, now it’s just a matter of time! The book, 15-150 Secret to Simple Dieting, is available at www.amazon. com and barnesandnobles.com or visit the website, www.15-150diet. com.The book is written by Dr. Steven M. Rosenberg, psychotherapist and inventor of diet, and Bobbie Freiberg, married, mother of two kids, and no longer a frustrated dieter! H&F

That’s it! No counting calories, eating packaged foods or going to meetings. Just this little knowledge. It’s really easy once you understand how to read labels. But there are other benefits to this diet that is great for anyone! It is an antiinflammatory diet and has anti-free radical effects on the body. CELEBRATING

This diet was developed for real people. During my weight loss, I continued to have evening cocktails, eat ice cream, muffins, cheesecakes, etc. You can diet and eat your cake too, but you must tweak the way you cook, order out and shop for food. It really is very simple once you learn to read labels and buy the lower fat and lower carb versions of the foods you love. We all need support during a diet, so feel free to visit our website at www.15-150Diet.com for recipes and dieting ideas. The book, 15-150 Secret to Simple Dieting helps with mental exercises to keep you on track, a great shopping list, and a detailed list of your favorite foods with their carb and fat values. It will teach you how to order your foods at restaurants to get rid of those sneaky fat and carbs that you may not even be aware you are consuming! Even when they list the calories at restaurants, they sometimes don’t include the sauces or garnishes.

I had no idea what I looked like in photographs and I would just avoid looking in the mirror.

24

What does this mean for you besides losing weight? Goodbye bloating and a younger you in the mirror! If you don’t need to lose weight but just want to maintain your status quo, then just limit your fats to no more than 20 grams per day and your carbohydrates to no more than 200 grams carbs per day. Once you are at this point, you have some flexibility. If you are eating a big steak that day, just cut down on the carbs a little and vice versa.

What You Can Do When You Can’t Sleep HEALTH

rejuvenate. But, somewhere along the way, many people lose track of the real goal,” Folkson says. “This is like cheating on a test. Using these things might help with your short term objectives, but in the long run, you’re losing. The quality of your sleep will suffer, and you’ll end up run-down.” A common concern is if a late workout regimen can have an effect on the ability to sleep at night. Folkson says this is on a case by case basis, but recommends not working out too strenuously before bed. If there are any new sleeping habits in conjunction to a new workout regimen, definitely try to change it.

he’s awake late into the night, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. She looks at the alarm clock and knows she has to be up for work in a few hours, so she might as well set the timer on the coffee pot now and mentally prepare for a tiring, grueling day. How can she just fall asleep so the next day isn’t terrible, and more importantly, learn to overcome insomnia once in for all? Depression can cause insomnia, and there is also sleep apnea, where someone may be sleeping but their quality of sleep is disrupted and they never feel fully rested. There are many reasons people have difficulties maintaining healthy sleeping habits as well as many things that people do to try to conjure up sleep when sleep won’t come. From counting sheep to drinking warm milk, what are some quick fixes to falling asleep that work and are healthy for you? You may have heard that drinking warm milk can help one sleep, but not completely understand why or know whether or not there was any merit to the rumor. According to former insomniac turned sleep advocate and sleep researcher Sean Folkson, milk can actually help people fall asleep. “First of all, many people don’t realize this, but a cup of milk contains about 13 grams of sugar,” Folkson says. “Ingesting carbohydrates in the evening has been proven to help with sleep. Milk is also a good source of calcium, which many people believe has a calming effect.” While Folkson states that warm versus cold milk doesn’t make much of a difference, he maintains that milk (especially warm) is very soothing and can subconsciously trigger memories of a simpler time, which helps to relax people into a sleep mode. Obviously, this may not work for every troubled sleeper, but it is comforting to know that milk can actually help to induce relaxation. While a little bit of sugar and carbohydrates may actually help one fall to sleep, midnight snackers, beware, because according to Folkson eating junk food, foods high in fat, spicy foods, or just eating too much in general before bed will keep you awake. as well, and this may seem obvious, but it is tough for troubled sleepers to stop relying on it if it used to help get one through the day. It is best to eliminate it all together, but a person can do so by cutting out more and more each day until he or she isn’t taking it anymore. Another common way that people try to make themselves fall asleep is by taking cold medicine or indulging in alcohol for the sole purpose of getting to sleep. While doing so may “knock a person out,” these choices are not creating healthy sleep habits and therefore are not successfully solving the problem at hand. “We should be focused on getting healthy, restful sleep so we can rest, recover, and

Many sleeping problems, including sleep apnea are extremely under diagnosed, so it is a good idea to talk to a doctor if you are having consistent problems sleeping rather than relying on a home remedy or quick fix. It is wise to discuss sleeping pills with a doctor, even the over-thecounter options, before trying them. There are so many different sleeping pills out on the market, getting a second opinion from a professional is smart to do before sampling a random selection. Creating healthy habits while we are awake also contribute to healthy sleeping habits, so really think about how to improve your health and lifestyle overall if you know you are a troubled sleeper. “When it comes to sleep, most of us just aren’t doing it right,” Folkson says. “I tell people, sleep should be just about the easiest thing you ever do, we just need to stay out of the way.” For more info, see

The psychological comfort and sense of identity that comes from having tons of garrulous aunts and uncles and cousins around no longer exists for many Americans. Grandma and Grandpa live a continent away and hardly understand a word of their progenies’ endlessly ironic Facebook posts and popcultural references. The old look at the young (with all their piercings and tattoos and wires coming out of their ears) as some exotic, slightly menacing new species; while the young look at the old as some utterly unrecognizable substratum of the human race.

isanthropes rejoice! In this era of technological innovation and obsessive gadgetry, it is now possible to go through life without ever having to interact with another human being. We commute to work in the mornings comfortably enclosed in the self-contained environment of our automobiles, with the air-conditioner blasting and the world drowned out by our customized playlists blaring over the speakers. We honk our horns and flip the bird at other anonymous motorists and, in general, behave in ways we would never dream of without the protection of high speeds and four doors. At work we sit isolated for hours on end in our cubicles staring at computer screens, firing off carelessly composed emails to names of people we have never met regarding work we couldn’t care less about. In the evenings, we order take-out or delivery thereby eliminating the need for any of that annoying talk with the butcher or the cashier or the server. Most grocery stores now deliver to your front doorstep; and clothes shopping may be done entirely online. Even friendship has become sterilized and debased beyond all recognition: we no longer interact with each other, but rather with idealized and digitalized versions of ourselves. Sex has become commoditized as well: the booming business of online pornography is yet another symptom of our increasing isolation and the dehumanizing effects of technology. The process of the alienation of the individual began at least as far back as the Industrial

Revolution, when the allure of the city—with its factory jobs and other urban attractions—began to siphon off the younger and more restless inhabitants of nearby agricultural communities. Suddenly proud, centuries-old villages were transformed into dilapidated geriatric communities devoid of all vitality and life—mere moribund husks of their former selves. Religious institutions also began to fail. The church used to be the center of the community—a place where families would gather to worship and (just as important) to socialize and gossip. Today we gossip not so much about the local characters and eccentrics of our own towns and communities, but about the vapid, PR machine-polished celebrities living in L.A. We care more about who’s marrying who in Hollywood than we do about who’s marrying who on our own street. Today it is not uncommon for children to grow up with hardly any extended family around. They are raised in one city, attend college in another city, find their first job in another city, and finally settle down in yet another city. America is the most mobile country in history.

America is a nation with a booming self-help industry, as well as a thriving pharmacological industry. We are obsessed with “disorders” (attention deficit, obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, addiction, etc.) There are many doctors and philosophers who would explain this disturbing trend by our increasing disconnection from one another, as well as from our natural surroundings. The lack of a viable family network; the proliferation of technologies that increasingly separate us from one another the more they supposedly bring us together; our disconnection from the natural environment: these are the roots of our endless “disorders.” David Abrams, in his book “The Spell of the Sensuous,” explains our psychological maladies by “the incessant drone of motors that shut out the voices of birds and of the winds; by electric lights that eclipse not only the stars but the night itself; by air ‘conditioners’ that hide the seasons; by offices, automobiles, and shopping malls that finally obviate any need to step outside the purely human world at all.” If we as a nation ever want to cure our addiction to disorder, we must first learn to nurture and enhance our tepid, often superficial relationships with one another, as well as with the natural environment. Week 6 Friday 10/22

Week 7 Friday 10/28

But that was just the beginning of their troubles. Seymour’s wife then found someone else more attractive than him and he became the first in his family to ever get divorced. After several years, he ended up meeting some paranormal investigators and began doing some investigating himself. And now he’s got some warnings for people, “to save them some trouble in life”, as he puts it. 1. Be aware of what’s going on around you. Anything that can’t be explained; look into it. If you hear things inside your house, check out the structure of the house and make sure that a defect isn’t causing the noises. Don’t just stop there if it continues. 2. If your children start saying that they’re talking to someone, don’t pass it off as their imagination. Look into it.

By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C.), Editor t 23, I moved into a house my dad bought they were fluffing up the sheets and blankets. with my wife and daughter, Tabatha. She The sheets and blankets would physically move was 3 at the time,” said Roger Seymour, up and down,” he said. paranormal investigator. “All the trouble started when we first looked at the house.” That wasn’t the end of it, though. Several times for no reason, “Brown gunk would come out of Seymour said that his daughter had run off to the bathtub, toilet, bathroom sink and kitchen the kid’s bedroom while the rest of the family sink – all at the same time. They would all fill was in the master bedroom when they heard her up to the top, and then suddenly go back down. It smelled rotten. When it still happened after laughing and talking. Roger’s mother went off the entire septic system was cleaned, we didn’t to see what was happening and found the girl know what to make of it…” talking to someone, yet she saw no one.

“I’m praying with the lady,” Tabatha said. His mom thought she was just imagining a playmate, and went back to join the others. About 20 minutes later, Tabatha began screaming as loud as she could. “The man is after me!” she exclaimed. They calmed her down, attributing the outburst to children’s imagination. About 5 weeks after they moved in, Roger and his wife woke up to hearing footsteps in the hallway. No one was there. Another week later, they were talking in bed and both felt something strange. “It was as if someone sat on the bed between us. We even felt the mattress sink down. After that, there were times when we were in bed when we felt as if someone was at the end of the bed and

And then one day, there were more footsteps in the hallway. Seymour caught a glimpse of a woman with long straight gray hair in the dark, pacing in between the rooms of the house but when he turned on the light, the image was gone. More pacing continued, as if it was going to Tabatha’s bedroom. When he checked on her, she was asleep and looked as peaceful as any child does when sleeping. About 5 minutes after the noise in the hallway stopped, his daughter staggered into the master bedroom and collapsed. “We took her to the hospital and she had a temp of 107 degrees. She spent 30 days there. The doctors could never figure out what was wrong. She was okay when she came home,” he said.

3. If you place a cup down and walk away, then four minutes later, it’s not there, that should be a sign to check it out. It’s not always a bad memory. If this action persists, contact a paranormal investigator. Call someone professional and don’t try to do it yourself. You may be biting off more than what you can chew. Consider talking to a reputable preacher or priest. Your faith will have a lot to do with things like this happening or not happening in the future. You must keep your faith in God and in Jesus Christ. 4. Stay away from cults or any religion unrelated to Jesus. 5. Don’t use ouiji boards. These are dangerous because you don’t know what will be conjured up. They may open up doors you will wish you hadn’t. Seymour used to play with ouiji boards when he was a child, for about 5 years. “It was common to feel the table lifting up or shaking, or doors opening and slamming shut.“ He played it with his siblings and cousins. “One of my cousins ended up building a 10 foot tall idol of a creature with weird horns that was in her house when she was in her 20’s,” he reported. His warning continued. “Stay as far away from the paranormal that you can. Believe in Christ. It’s the safest way to go.” H&F

How do we know we are making the right decision to euthanize or to keep fighting for our pet’s life? When my friend recently had to put down his beloved companion Doris, who had suffered for months with hip problems, he was just as troubled as when his dog Helga had died unexpectantly. Eva, who took in numerous rescued golden retrievers throughout her life, told me that each time one of her companions died, it was never any easier than the first time. Some well-meaning people who do not understand our grief, ask questions

being silly for feeling so distraught, but my feelings were actually typical. Pet Loss Support Group Now Found in Sacramento Those who have not deeply bonded with an animal and experienced their loss cannot possibly understand our pain. It is for this reason that pet loss support groups are popping up across the country. Tamara Samsa created a support group in Sacramento for people to share stories of love and companionship with their beloved animals. Meeting at the Healing Roots Animal Center, 2701 Cottage Way, Suite 35, Sacramento, they offer the opportunity to explore the nature of loss in a safe and loving environment. Tamara says, “As part of this program one will have a chance to hear about death from the perspective of the animals from Animal Communicator Carla Simmons. Finally, we will create a tribute to honor the life that was loved.” There are many websites dedicated to pet loss with memorial pages such as petloss.com and pet-loss.net. They include advice, stories from other pet owners, resources, poetry, and personal support. On one site, a candle light ceremony is performed by individuals across the world in memory of pets that have crossed over. Message boards and chat rooms allow for direct interaction with others who are going through the same circumstances. How Can We Remember Them Forever? Everyone copes with their loss differently. A client contacted me when her vet said her German Shepherd Spike had only a week at best to live. I immediately found time in my schedule to photograph him so that she and her husband could cherish Spike’s portrait long after his passing. I’ve also had many other clients commission an oil painting to memorialize their beloved pet. Kitty has her own scrapbook complete with a lock of fur and photos from the day she came into my life to the very last day. 32

f you are struggling with an aggressive or disobedient dog you should consider making changes to its diet. Many common behavior issues have their roots in poor nutrition or a negative reaction to certain foods. Dogs are what they eat, both in body and mind. Once you learn which foods may be provoking your dog’s behavior problems you can take steps to resolve them for good. A common issue that can be attributed to diet is coprophagia. Coprophagia is a compulsion to consume feces. It is a very unsanitary habit and if you see your dog exhibiting this behavior, often you must take steps to stop it. A dog may be attracted to feces because it is not fully digesting its food. Low quality foods that are high in fat and grain fillers are usually to blame. Switch your dog to a high protein diet. Training and diligent

cleaning will also be necessary to fully control this. There is research to support that anxiety and aggression in dogs is often related to their diet. Dogs will display abnormal response to discomfort or pain. This could be due to a lack of proper nutrition or from foods that are irritating their system. Some experts claim that the additives and coloring in commercial dog foods may also be contributing to the problem. Feeding your dog a premium food with quality ingredients can help promote positive changes. But a new diet is only one part of the solution. An aggressive or anxious dog will still require obedience training. It should also see a vet to rule out illness or injury. A sudden change in temperament or condition may be due to food allergies. Symptoms can include

lethargy, incontinence, hair loss, and skin infections. Most dogs with food allergies are reacting to grain. Grain free foods are now widely available in most pet stores. Sometimes the dog may be allergic to a specific type of meat. You may need to look in to more exotic options to meet your dog’s needs such as salmon, duck, bison, or even kangaroo. You should consult a vet to diagnose dog allergies before you make any changes. These symptoms may also be signs of other illnesses. Considering the consequences, choosing the right food for your dog’s physical and emotional wellbeing can feel overwhelming. But it is as simple as knowing what your dog’s needs are and taking a critical look at a brand’s ingredients. Dogs need a diet that is high in protein and low in fat and carbohydrates. Look for foods that list

whole meat products as one of the first few ingredients. Avoid foods that list too many grains such as rice or corn. Some owners prefer to take control of their pet’s diet and prepare fresh food themselves. Dogs are sensitive animals that will respond physically and mentally to the foods they consume. Sometimes a change in diet can make all the difference when dealing with a behavior issue. Take the time to learn what types of dog food may be most suitable for your pet’s individual needs. A dogs diet is necessary in maintaining a happy and contented animal, this can be found in the dog food ingredient list on backs of packaging. So why do we continue to put ourselves through the inevitable pain of a pet’s death? Is the pain we feel when they are gone greater than all the joy, love, and happiness they bring to our life while they are alive? Well, petlovers would say yes but sometimes cannot bring themselves to get another pet. Pets are loyal and love us unconditionally. They seem to understand and sympathize with us when we feel alone. Our companion animals look in our eyes and are able to tell us things without saying a word. That is why we do it all over again. Always a Student T

here is an old saying about life being a journey rather than a destination. In martial arts, it’s understood that you are always learning, practicing, and hopefully, perfecting your technique. While accomplishing that ongoing assignment, martial arts students are also building muscle, increasing endurance and aerobic strength, controlling weight while improving balance and flexibility. When practiced regularly, martial arts are a ‘health’ plan. But, you can’t quit making that journey, because gravity, time and too much of everything will run you down. And when it catches, you look out! So, practicing your martial arts helps make your body stronger but what about your mental health? Having good health, building a strong body and knowing you can kick butt provide a great deal of confidence which leads to better self esteem, creating more respect for yourself and others. That’s a pretty good mental balance that starts immediately on becoming a student of a martial art.

What kind of martial art you may consider is often spurred by the flavor of the moment. From boxing in the 50’s to the brutal cage battles of MMA in the 90’s, the martial arts scene is always growing and changing. In the new century the Korean-based martial art of Taekwondo has grown to become the world’s most taught style now practiced in over 200 countries worldwide. It has supplanted previous styles like Judo or Karate among athletes taking it to the top in Olympic competitions. The Korean people got tired of others bringing their martial arts, and their troops, to occupy their country… time after time. So they created a style that overmatches the techniques of previous generations to conquer kung fu, karate, judo and jiu jitsu techniques. So what would you choose?

If you have to make a long trip wouldn’t you rather choose a style of transportation that is best, offers more to the individual and keeps life interesting? That’s why I began a journey as a young man in the Air Force serving in Korea, and it has covered With this coupon for the first 25 registrants more than 40 years in practicing and teaching my martial art, keeping my good health and protecting myself and my family. Q: Help me, Ronda! I’m a coach myself and recently have been struggling with raising my fees for my coaching service. At present I’ve been charging less than the average coach and working with people who may react negatively to the price increase. I also worry about the reaction of new possible clients after I mention my fees. How do I approach this sticky subject with my old clients? Is there something I can do to feel comfortable with changing my price for my coaching service? Cowardly Coach A: Dear Cowardly Coach, First I must say there is nothing cowardly about asking for help. It is actually a sign of bravery. The coward is the person I never hear from. Your situation is a common challenge for many coaches when it is time to raise their fees. Coaching services, for most, is considered a commodity and not a necessity. However, the benefits often become a necessity to grow as a person both personally and professionally. Keeping this in mind, a new client or old client always has a choice in whether they perceive your service to have enough value to pay your price. In order for you to feel comfortable in approaching old or new clients with your price, you must know the value yourself. If you have ever been coached yourself, it shouldn’t be too hard to know what the value of coaching has done for you. Relate the benefits you received to what your client will receive, and this will help you feel more comfortable. If you have not been coached, the solution is for you to get some coaching for yourself

and the problem will be solved. We all get stuck at times even when we are a coach. All great coaches have their own coach. When is it time to coach yourself... be coached... coach others? Coach Yourself • Improve your self-talk to boost your performance. • Frequently give yourself encouragement. • Check with yourself for congruency before making any important decision. • Focus on what you want, rather than what you don’t want. Be Coached • If you often struggle with feelings of selfdoubt or self-confidence. • If you have a nagging feeling that something is missing. • If you don’t know what is blocking you from achieving your goals. • If you keep repeating unwanted patterns even though you know better. • If your performance isn’t where you want it to be. Coach Others • Motivating others to achieve higher standards of achievement. • Increase on the job effectiveness to improve the bottom-line. • Replace ineffective strategies with empowering strategies. • Improve individual, group or team performance. • Help others overcome their barriers for a rewarding career. “My coach has helped me understand that what I am capable of doing today relates to how I feel about what has happened in my past. She has helped me resolve these issues so that today I have the power, and will, to be anything I want to be.” L. Lowthers Business Counsellor & Mother

Q: Help me, Ronda! I’m a 16-year-old girl and I’ve just started dating. During my last date I ended up crying because my date started to make advances I wasn’t prepared for. We were in the park and he asked me if he could massage my shoulders. At first I said no but agreed since I love having my shoulders massaged. He then started massaging my head so I put my head on his lap. Within minutes he started making the advances and I starting crying so he stopped. I just met this guy and this upset me greatly to have him do this. Now I’m scared to go out on a date with a new guy. How do I know who is a creep and who is not? Baffled Becky A: Dear Baffled Becky, The dating world can be scary. When you meet a guy for the first time, if you do not want to send him the message it is okay to touch, get to know each other before getting physical. Massaging and laying your head in on his lap is not a behavior that states hands-off to anyone. If you don’t want the next guy to think it is okay to touch you, then choose appropriate behavior to let him know what is acceptable by you and what is not. You are one lucky young lady that this guy wasn’t a creep and abided your wishes and stopped. Ronda Degaust is the author of How To Heal from Years of Criticism, Insults, Abuse & Rejection.
