Is Gluten Affecting Your Athletic Performance? Part 1 By Steve Caudle

T

here are over 300 symptoms associated with Gluten Intolerance or Celiac Disease that are often misdiagnosed. For athletes these include key features such as fatigue, joint pain and/or the inability to properly recover from injury. In most people, the severe symptoms do not show up until later in life. However, if a person does have gluten intolerance it is, and was always there. The absolute first thing it will do is prevent you from obtaining your optimum performance. For a runner with no visible symptoms, possibly the first effects are running 5 seconds off your race potential pace. Are you running the fastest you can, or is a hidden disease slowing you down by robbing you of food nutrients? The disease often progresses so slowly that people do not recognize the effects until they are severe, often in mid-life. In fact, the average diagnosis is 7 years upon first seeking medical assistance. For this reason it is extremely important that all athletes become aware of symptoms that signify a gluten problem.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is the outer coating on wheat, rye and

barley. It is popular with breads as it provides an outstanding “bind” that allows the bread to rise while remaining soft in texture. Individuals with Gluten Intolerance have an auto-immune reaction that if left untreated can have serious and even life-threatening reactions. 1% of the population has been diagnosed; however it is heavily misunderstood and misdiagnosed within the medical community. Recent research now shows that 15% of the general population suffers from the condition (one study is as high as 40%). Oats also contain a differing form of gluten that can also cause a reaction. However, cross contamination with wheat is very common and causes a bigger concern. Celiac Disease, in short, are people with damaged intestines from gluten intolerance. Arrival of symptoms varies wildly. Some individuals will have reactions within months of being born. More common are people over the age of 30. The only cure is the complete removal of gluten from the diet.

the night before. Yet on the starting line you’re thinking you felt better last week finishing off that 10 miler. You end up with a so-so day at best.

Common Symptoms Among Athletes:

You’ve been running 7 minute miles, but a few days later you’re pushing hard yet were closer to a 9 minute pace. You can’t make sense of it because 2 months ago you did a 6:30 pace without even trying that hard.

Game Day Fatigue

You did everything right. Months of hard training. Days before the event you train less to get that extra jump. Carbo-Load to the max

The key here is Carbo-Loading. Even mild gluten intolerance is going to have a negative effect when you eat so many carbohydrates based upon gluten (wheat) products. Sometimes people with higher sensitivity or those with progressed symptoms can easily trace specific ailments to a certain meal or food. More commonly a mild intolerance can simply put you off your game.

Port-A-Potty Problems

Spend a lot of time in the bathroom? Maybe have to use that Port-A-Potty even though you went at home already? Loose stool? Classic signs of gluten intolerance. If you carbo-load, it’s going to be worse.

Training Is Up and Down

Bloating

Feel like you ate a bunch of beans last night? Developed a side ache? If you’re a female, thinking that it’s that time of the month? Bloating is a classic sign of gluten intolerance

Getting Older and Slower

Maybe you can’t run like a gazelle anymore but you’ve got training smarts and are far more dedicated now. Yet Mother Nature has taken its toll and your glory days are behind you. Perhaps? Direct pain or mouth sores are often more advanced symptoms. Chronic anemia is often a sign that more is going on beneath the surface. A common question by older people (50+) is why did it suddenly develop? It didn’t. It actually took 50 years to produce the severe symptoms. In most cases, mild symptoms can linger for years, causing things like general fatigue – or just slower race times. If you live in the Sacramento area, stop by the Gluten Free Specialty Market located at: 2621 J Street, Sacramento. Or call (916) 442-5241. www.glutenfreespecialty.com. H&F 4

ummer and falle are a great time for parties, no matter what the occasion. Why not plan an outdoor garden party and take advantage of fresh air and green space?

If you have been spending the spring season planting flowers and vegetables, as well as pruning the landscape, why not show off all that hard work to your guests? A garden has a beautiful natural back drop, and often gardens have unique and interesting spaces. Outdoor dining during the spring, summer and fall seasons can be a great experience, one the whole family can enjoy, especially in a garden setting. Planning the perfect outdoor garden party does not have to be difficult or expensive; it just takes the proper planning. Creating a comfortable space for your guests can be achieved, no matter the size of your yard or garden, or your budget. Tables, table covers, chairs and more can be found online, both used and new, at reduced prices. Shop the end of season clearance sales for plastic serving trays, glassware and plastic plates. Kids especially enjoy dining outside, so consider the little ones when planning the seating. A smaller sized, lower to the ground table and shorter chairs works best for kids. Dress up the children’s table with fun decorations, party favors and treats. Be sure to have a few outdoor games planned to keep them entertained. Be sure all tables sit on level ground! You can also get creative and bring some of the indoors out and use chairs, side tables and blankets and create a living room outside. It’s important to consider lighting, especially if you are having an evening party. Accent lighting around the landscaping and walkways will add visual interest and help set a festive mood. Large citronella candles will provide light and keep away the bugs. Hanging lanterns and glass tabletop lanterns look pretty and provide additional ambient lighting. In the fall or cooler spring evenings, a fire pit is the perfect way to warm up and provide a place for guests to gather. Garden parties do not require a lot of decorations. The garden setting should speak for itself; however, adding a few special touches here and there is a nice idea. Hanging a few paper lanterns or light strands to the trees is a nice touch. Chairs could have balloons or paper flowers attached to them. Showcase your garden space and plan an outdoor garden party this summer! Discover more about garden parties and picnic tables online at www.woodpicnictable.co.uk. H&F

Q: Help me, Ronda! A couple of months ago I wrote to you about a challenging relationship coming to an end, and you helped me by pointing out that relationships based on one person helping the other aren’t enough to sustain a lasting relationship. You also suggested I ask myself a question before starting a new relationship: What value does this person bring into my life besides feeling good by helping them? I took your advice and wanted to share with you and your readers, the value of this simple advice and how not having this negative person in my life anymore has impacted my life immediately. Wow, Wow, Wow! Although my business was good, we tripled our monthly income two months in a row now. It’s hard to believe how much energy I put into helping this person drained my energy and focus to do better in my own life. If one negative person leaving my life helped this much; I wonder what would happen if I removed them all? Is there a simple checklist to follow to remove negative people from our lives? Helping Helen Renewed A: Dear Helping Helen Renewed, Congratulations on your new success, both in business and for

wanting to help others by what you learned. Your helping nature shines through and as long as you follow the simple checklist below, these negative people will leave your life just as quickly as your new success came into your life. Removing Negative People Check List: √ R ecognize The Negative Person: Do you feel bad or drained in the company of this person? Make a list of these people.

RELATIONSHIPS

Help Me, Ronda! √ S et Boundaries To Eliminate Time Vampires: Ask these following simple questions in both areas of your life. If the answer is none, you are giving away your time to a negative person. Business: - Where is the profit in this? Personal: - Where is the pleasure in this? √ M ake A Values List: Ask yourself, what is important to you about your relationships? The words you list are your values. Then decide and determine if this person brings value into your life. Rank your values in order of importance. Highlight your top 3 and use these values as a ‘must have’ check list in all relationships. √ E nd The Conversation: When ever the conversation turns negative, end it by telling the person your have to go. Immediately leave the room, the building or hang up the telephone. Negative people feed their fire on what they are getting from you. If you stop feeding the fire, they will simply go away. The big question that always arises when the topic of removing negative people from your life is: What if they are family? What if they are your mother, father, child, or spouse? Family can be the most negative people on your list. Since there is a good chance there is some positive pleasure you receive from them, set boundaries around the amount of time you spend with them. Limit visits and telephone calls within a comfortable time frame for you. If “Yeah but…” comes to mind, ask yourself this question: How important is it to you to enrich your life both personally and professionally? “The biggest gift towards your future is to be generous towards your present. Events and people in our lives don’t control our lives; our decisions do.” Ronda Degaust is the author of How To Heal from Years of Criticism, Insults, Abuse & Rejection. Weight Loss From Water The Secret of the pH Factor

O

besity is a uniquely American disease, and billions of dollars are spent each year on weight loss solutions. Despite the attention, few solutions get to the root cause of obesity. The culprit is not too many calories, the wrong fats or carbohydrates, or not exercising enough. Chronic mild acidosis is the cause.

According to Dr. Susan Lark, author of The Chemistry of Success, ionized water is more readily absorbed by the body, “thereby increasing the water’s hydrating ability and its ability to carry its negative ions and alkalizing effect to all the cells and tissues of the body. If you are overly acidic, an alkaline water device can provide a safe, gentle, and effective way of restoring the pH balance of all the cells in your body as well as providing excess free electrons to act as super antioxidants.”

“The body retains fat as a protection against the overproduction of acids caused by the typical American diet. You are not overweight, you are over acidic. Your fat is actually saving your life. Without that fat protecting the cells, tissues, and organs of your body from acids, you would be dead.” -Dr. Robert Young, Author, The pH Miracle for Weight Loss The standard modern diet high in protein, sugars and unhealthy fats results in a lot of metabolic acid residue that the body must get rid of. In fact, grains, even whole grains and fruits, add to the acid load. Green leafy vegetables contain the minerals and chlorophyll necessary to buffer these acids, but we don’t eat enough to balance our otherwise acidic diet. What we drink may be even worse than what we eat. Weight-loss staples such as coffee, tea and diet soda are all extremely acidic. Bottled water? Acidic. Fruit smoothies, sports drinks, and milk? All contribute to the acid the body has to eliminate. Our lifestyle also contributes to chronic acidity. Smoking, air

pollution, stress, and negative thoughts all increase acidity in the body. So does intense exercise, as lactic acid builds up if you don’t drink enough water to flush it out in your perspiration. The secret to weight loss is to decrease the body’s acidity by increasing the intake of alkaline foods and restructured, ionized alkaline water. This will balance out your body’s pH, and provide the buffers needed to eliminate acid waste. Most alkaline foods are vegetables that must be consumed raw to retain their alkalinity, and we just don’t eat enough of them. It’s a lot easier to drink restructured, ionized, alkaline water. The alkalinity and negative electrical charge will help the body eliminate acids and toxins from the fat cells. The smaller clusters of water molecules makes ionized water more hydrating, better able to penetrate the cells and remove accumulated waste.

“The cells and fluids in most people’s bodies are overly acidic. This can cause a lot of health problems. It prevents your body from neutralizing and disposing of harmful, poisonous toxins and leaves you more susceptible to the cell-damaging free radical oxidation that leads to cancer and other diseases.” -Dr. Robert Atkins, Author, Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution “Too much acidity in the body is like having too little oil in the car. It just grinds to a halt one lazy Sunday afternoon. There you are, stuck. The body does the same thing.” -Dr Theodore Baroody, Author, Alkalize or Die Restructured, ionized water has the ability to deeply hydrate the tissues, neutralize acid waste and remove it from storage in the fat cells. It helps to naturally flush toxins and acidic waste from your body and is a powerful antioxidant because its negative charge provides electrons that neutralize or stabilize oxygen free-radicals, acids and toxins. Restructured, ionized water makes more oxygen available to your cells than distilled, reverse osmosis, carbon filtered, bottled or tap water. Ionized water was introduced to the Japanese public decades ago, and it has become the standard water treatment in approximately 1 out of 7 households in Japan and Korea. It is now the fastest-growing water purification technology in North America. By Andreas Moritz © 2011 by Andreas Moritz Throughout the ages, aloe vera has been known as the medicine plant, burn plant, first-aid plant or miracle plant. Even today, it is one of the most effective plants for treating burns, healing wounds and relieving aches and pains. It is recommended for psoriasis, where, when used regularly, it reduces scaling and itching and greatly improves appearance. Aloe vera became very popular for its use in combating the severe burning effects caused by x-rays and nuclear disasters. Radiation burns cause skin ulcerations that had been nearly incurable until physicians began trying the old folk remedy of the aloe leaf. Today, this plant has gained such great popularity that it is being used in many cosmetics and health products. Aloe vera juice that is taken internally has been found to be helpful in almost every illness, including cancer, heart disease and AIDS. In fact, there is hardly any disease or health problem for which this miracle plant has not been proven successful or helpful. For example, all kinds of allergies, skin diseases, blood disorders, arthritis, infections, yeast overgrowth, cysts, diabetes, eye problems, digestive disorders, ulcers, liver diseases, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, kidney stones and stroke, are only a few amongst hundreds. Its use is most beneficial if treatments are applied both internally and externally. It contains over 200 nutrients, including the vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, C, E, folic acid, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper, barium, sulphate, 18 amino acids, important enzymes, glycosides, and polysaccharides.

A word of caution: watch out for the frauds:

Since the consumer market has created a great demand for aloe vera juice, production is increasing rapidly. Unfortunately, many brands contain inadequate amounts of the plant juice to be effective. According to law, if you take a 10,000-gallon vat and put 9,999 gallons of water in it and then add one gallon of aloe vera juice, you are allowed to advertise that it contains 100 percent pure stabilized aloe vera. You are not required to mention how much extra water has been added to the 100 percent aloe vera juice. Hence many people are disappointed because they do not receive the acclaimed benefits. Before using any brand it is good to check out the exact list of contents in a company’s brochure or better yet, ask the company to give you the exact figures of contents.

Signs of Tiredness • bags and creases under the eyes • skin tone doesn’t look radiant • wrinkles or deep creases in face • jowls and droopy lips • eyelids droopy or sleepy look to eyes • loss of skin elasticity

There are an estimated 500 published independent research studies conducted by doctors and scientists on the healing agent found in the aloe vera plant and its nontoxic benefits. That is many more studies than one can find on any other natural substance, and hundreds of times the confirmation of safety and effectiveness of any drug available.

Also, don’t be tempted to buy the cheapest aloe juice. If you are not getting any benefits from it, you may have chosen the wrong product. Try other brands until you are satisfied. Tests have shown that less than one percent of readily available brands contain acceptable levels of aloe vera to be of any medicinal value. From the over 1,000 brands

of aloe vera available on the market today, some hardly have a trace of the plant extract in them. Their labels contain such phrases like, “It tastes like mineral water,” and “no additives or preservatives”. Chemical analysis reveals that these products contain almost nothing but plain mineral water. The good news is that more and more people have begun to see through the fraud; hence, many other companies are now also introducing the real thing.

HEALTH

Aloe Vera: An Ancient Healer

There is an excellent new aloe vera product in powdered form, which dissolves in water; it is thus more convenient than having to buy the bottled juice. It is completely free of additives.

Warning to Diabetics

With regular drinking of aloe vera, diabetics may improve the ability of their pancreas to produce more of its own insulin. Since too much insulin is dangerous, diabetics should consult their physician to monitor their need for extra insulin. Many diabetics report a reduction in the amount of insulin required. Also if you experience diarrhea or intestinal cramping for more than two to three days, discontinue. This is due to irritants the plant contains. Instead, you may choose a product that has all irritants removed. Andreas Moritz is a writer and practitioner in the field of Integrative Medicine. lot to share and discuss. Just NOT a 100% identical curriculum!

Dear Readers, Your Moment: RIGHT NOW... Eternity is THIS MOMENT. Ready for holiday decorations?!

And, It’s All Curriculum; All Opportunities To Learn!

This column is a rather unique response to the number of virtually identical letters over the past two months.

SO you have CHOICE around life’s chaos, disconnect, disorientation, depression, catastrophes, etc.!

Readers are expressing the following: • Enduring overwhelm with the pace of life • Disorientation as the “familiar” seems long gone • Insecurity as each day seems to provide more challenges than the day before • Disconnection, as the world seemingly spins out of control

Like WHAT choice? You MAY CHOOSE TO: • Recognize that life IS what it IS, complete with challenges and rewards! • Acknowledge that you HAVE the resources, skills and moxie to live joyfully and fully self-expressed EVEN during the worst of challenging times! • LOOK for Where and How YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO OVERCOME, TO SUCCEED, AND TO THRIVE!

As the chaos of life makes keeping your head above water exhausting, if you’re willing to CONSIDER this next statement, this MAY be the most empowering column you’ve ever read! You Chose Everything You Experience Nothing Is Coincidence. All Is Transpiring As It Is Meant To Be! I KNOW, you didn’t choose: • The massive loss of jobs due to corporate greed • The fall of the housing market • The life-sucking impact of the high-tech • evolution • Poverty, starvation, hurricanes or diseases But YOU DID CHOOSE: • To be where you’re at TO EXPERIENCE the bombardment of life elements we don’t choose: Your culture(s), your country, state, town or city job and neighborhood, your job, your astrological sign.

The Where and How STARTS at the Within! Finally, I recommend choosing to do a Positive Reframe of what’s going on. I ask you: What did YOU CHOOSE to be LEARNING RIGHT NOW?! Your curriculum: Whatever challenges you deal with daily – the recession, parenting in a culture that provides little support (little community and minimal shared values), aging and aging parents, unpredented cultural dynamics – THESE are the elements of YOUR Curriculum! YES, many are sharing many common Curriculum elements! BUT your experience of the curriculum is wholly unique! Wholly personal! Wholly YOURS!

• The resources, skills and personal relationships at your fingertips: Your personality, your experiences, the banker, the cashiers, the family members, the friends.

For example, let’s say that you and your next door neighbor are both experiencing 8-yearold sons dealing with ADD symptoms, the same teacher at school, and both are in soccer.

Particularly the very spiritually-oriented among you readers are asking, “What the HELL is going on right now?!!”

I hate to tell you this, but you and this nextdoor neighbor are NOT experiencing the exact same curriculum! Very similar, and perhaps a

• Reframe EVERY challenge as a challenge (something that HAS a “solution”)! • Reframe your Role from Victim to Student (someone that HAS choices and options to Learn, Grow and Overcome)! • And, SHARE these reframed comments with EVERYONE possible! Yes, ENROLL your personal connections in by simply changing the conversation from how horrible things are or how things are getting worse, and/or how life USED to be so much better, to this: These challenging times are the best of the Curriculum. The BEST opportunities to Grow and Evolve as a Human Being! Congratulations, you’re alive and are enrolled as A Student! Keeping Up with “The Run” An Excerpt from Dr. Godby’s Blog

M

apping out the run on US map with the kids! Today through Thursday, we will be enroute to Fort Collins! While out on the highway getting a “stretch up” from Michael, I was thinking that an awesome way for kids (and/or adults) to learn the geography of the USA, and to keep involved in the run, would be to follow us on a map across the USA with a colored marker, using the itinerary on our website. It seems like a practical way to learn geography and great to learn where we have come from and where we are going! August 22, 2011 Unfortunately, most of the towns we have run through in the last 36 days, from San Francisco to Steamboat Springs, CO, have not had the opportunity to learn about what we are doing. We needed more exposure in the media and more access to the people of the towns. We need your participation to make The Run as effective as possible in delivering the message to as many people as possible! Listed below are towns across the USA that we will be running through where we need more local contacts. Please check the itinerary carefully, check your address books, think of friends, or family or colleagues that live in or near these towns or people you know that may have friends in these towns. Local contacts in these towns could potentially contribute a meal for four hungry runners, let their church, business groups, health-related contacts, civic groups, prominent people in the community know about the run and really be able to stir up the town. To live in a healthier nation will help all of us, indirectly or directly. Please put on your thinking cap for us. Thank you so much!

Aphrodisiacs Could Save The World Part 1

W

hen we study our world’s survivability, we may be shocked that our biosphere evolved in the last several hundred thousand years to a couple million years from a tribe of migratory humanoids. They were hunters and gatherers whose bodily systems were constantly affected by the supply of food, dangerous predators, and the elements and changing climate. Those mates that were matched had to be highly selective for providing and producing to assure the next generation to survive. The neuro-endocrine system of human beings became an internal selector for deciding decisively which alpha male would have “rights” to choose the most fertile women. Fast forward a few hundred thousand years where that same species now are living in modern day cities where traffic emissions, fast food, soft drinks laden with artificial sweeteners and bars, and clubs and fitness clubs that are everywhere. Socialization practices rather than biological selection have become the prominent way of selecting mates, but if we believe that only, we may be overlooking the influence “Mother Nature” still has. The brain and hormone system today can be visualized by radio-imaging which shows tightly compact centers (nuclei) that control (climate control) thermoregulation, controls to sunlight and sleep centers (diurnal system), thirst control, aggression, depression, hunger and yes, sexuality in the thalmus, caudate nucleus and amygdala. Beneath that is where the hypothalmus secretes all of our hormones. The rich lattice of biochemicals, hormones and brain matter are what control all our activity in our body. Could there be “spill overs”, so that one stimuli (cold, hunger, depression) could evoke numerous responses? Could this explain so many paradoxical reactions we experience? Could this be nature’s safety net to insure our survivability? For example, why does it appear we get hungry and overeat when we are by ourselves and lonely on a Friday night? Does compensating with comfort foods act as a survival response? Why does cold damp wintery weather cause us to feel depressed and we seem to overeat? Why does being in a

gym working out appear to heighten our sexuality? Let’s take working out, for example. When we work out we secrete adrenalin, which dilates blood vessels, our heart rate goes up, breathing goes up, we sweat more, our pupils dilate as well. We secrete biochemical hormones called enkephalins and endorphins that heighten awareness, make us euphoric, increase exercise tolerance, reduce the pain threshold, make us feel sexier, and raise the “feel good” effects of ourselves. Pheromones are from sweat glands and when secreted, send out signals about sexuality. Many of these same biological reactions are also happening in sexuality or lovemaking. Special pheromone-like chemicals called Copulins that enhance testosterone in men and heighten fertility in women are also secreted. If you were to place two different couples – a man and a woman behind a curtain working out with gym equipment and the other couple behind another curtain making love, the physiological responses would be so similar that it would be difficult to determine which couple was doing which activity based on data alone. When we look at these “tightly packed” brain centers, we see dopamine being secreted as a key neruo-chemical that sustains an individual’s level of happiness and satisfaction in a sexual relationship. Scientist have shown how this chemical plays a vital role in creating romance to allow couples to “fall in love”. It also galavanizes sexuality or is like our “horny center”. Lack of the chemical causes depression. But, it is still testosterone that triggers sex. PEA, another hormone appears to lead to sexual climax while engaged in love-making. The hormone excess of prolactin leads to lack of libido. A naturally made product in the human body called nitrous oxide can provide male tumesence by providing more blood flow to the male sex organ.

Hormones like oxytocin appear to make couples cuddle up to each other. The lack of it may be the biological cause for couples to move apart or break up. Vasopressin, another hormone very similar, promotes monogamy.

Thus, nature has equipped our bodies to utilize these products. So, it would be natural that before the modern industrial pharmaceutical age, nature would have provided certain products (fruits, vegetables, roots, berries, and herbs) to also enhance and stimulate us for sustaining sexuality as well for the survival of the human population. We call them aphrodisiacs. Remember, humanity evolved from a hunter-gathering community and many roots, herbs, berries and raw organic products were the primary staple and many were aphrodisiacs then and still are today. See Part 2 next month. Dr. Marcus Wells is a medical doctor and also has a Master’s in Public Health from Emory University. BACK TO SCHOOL

Back to School and Back to Sports By Gene Tracy

I

t’s that time of year again! Summer is ending and the new school year is beginning. Students will be hitting the books as well as the fields in a few weeks. While the brain may have had a vacation for a couple months, usually your child’s body and nutritional habits have as well. Back to school means back to organized sports for more than 30 million children and teenagers. Too many kids got out of shape during the summer, meaning they’re jumping back into practice with weakened muscles, fatigue and dehydration. This recipe for muscle strains, sprained joints and bone fractures can sideline an athlete for weeks or more. How can you as a parent prevent injury while giving your child the competitive edge? First of all, know that pre-season training and nutrition can play an important role in assuring a successful year in sports. Most high schools have a pre-season training camp before the school year starts in order to help teen athletes get back in shape. This is great for teens, but what about the younger children? In order to help them avoid injuries at the start of their season, it’s imperative that you take a couple weeks before practice starts and help your child with some physical conditioning. Most children stay indoors during the summer months to avoid the desert heat.. To help combat this, make sure your child is drinking plenty of fluids and start taking them outside for a little exercise after dinner. A light jog or walk around the block will help get them limber and acclimated to the heat they will endure will at practice. Proper nutrition is crucial for physical, emotional, social and psychological development. Young athletes often undermine their training by not fueling their bodies with proper nutrition and not timing their meals for optimal performance gains. Recent research shows that adolescents are failing to meet the recommended dietary requirements for caloric and nutrient intake. Among the most common eating habits of

our youth include skipping breakfast due to time constraints. Breakfast literally means “breaking the fast,” during sleeping. Breakfast starts the metabolism and supplies the body with nutrients needed in order to help your child focus in school and get through the day. No time for the traditional breakfast? Meal replacement powders (MRP’s) are a great alternative. Parents and young athletes are starting to use MRP’s for breakfast since they can be made in seconds and are full of energy packed nutrients. Products such as “Pure Advantage MRP” contain complete proteins, complex carbohydrates and an anti-oxidant program to help boost the immune system. Still high on the danger list for August and September are heat-related illnesses. Fluids and electrolyte/recovery supplements are

extremely important and will help your child recover faster and decrease his or her risk of injury. However, knowing what products to use and when to use them is the key to offset fatigue, increase recovery, and provide sustained energy levels. One nutritional company based in Phoenix named Pure Kidz has a few interesting products you should take a look at. Super Fuel was developed by parents of our local communities for their young athletes. What separates this formula from the rest is that Super Fuel is 100% natural, great tasting and ideal for pre and post physical activities. Super Fuel contains a balanced ratio of simple and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy levels. It also supplies energy producing B vitamins and key amino acids to make Super Fuel a well rounded electrolyte, energy and recovery drink.

Creatine is a good example. Creatine monohydrate is one of the most researched and used supplements in the world right now (particularly in young teens). The human body makes about 2 grams of creatine a day. Modern science and research has proven that taking an additional 5-10 grams a day can assist in lean muscle mass (through increased intramuscular water and eventual new muscle growth) and increasing short term power output. Decades of research show that creatine use is safe and effective. But here’s the catch; it’s safe and effective as long as the individual is has increased their water intake to overcome the shuttling of the water into the muscles and out of the tissues surrounding the muscles. Here are some tips for optimal strength and energy for your young athlete: • Hydrate with water and electrolyte containing powders such as Super Fuel before, during and after sports activities; avoid caffeine. • Be sure to eat a small, balanced meal approximately 2 to 4 hours before the event and include proteins and carbohydrates such as a turkey sandwich, or pasta and tomato sauce. • No time for a meal? Use a Meal Replacement Powder such as Pure Advantage’s MRP. • Don’t be afraid to contact your local health food store for safe and effective supplements for your young athlete. What I Did to Beat the Postpartum Blues By Emily Edwards

M

y husband Kyle and I are both first time parents so when we found out I was pregnant, we wanted to make sure we did everything to the best of our ability to plan for a happy, healthy birth and postpartum period. Eighty percent of mothers experience some form of “Baby Blues,” which is postpartum birth depression, so we started seeking a safe, natural remedy. That’s when Health & Fitness Magazine contacted Tamara Morales from www.PlacentaMom.com. What an Exciting, Life-Giving Process

When we first heard about Placenta Encapsulation, we were extremely interested. We weren’t quite sure what the whole process entailed but were excited to find out. We also made sure that taking the placenta home was written in our Birth Vision; otherwise, the hospital will dispose it. The placenta encapsulation is a 3-day process, once the placenta reaches Tamara. She cleans, steams and dehydrates the placenta and next prepares it for encapsulation. She even dehydrates the umbilical cord for a special keepsake. When the process is finished, the capsules are put into a plastic bottle with the directions printed on the front of the bottle. All I needed to do was follow the directions. In other cultures, the placenta is kept and sliced for soup to eat during the post-partum period. Usually, there is only enough placenta for about a week’s worth of soup. Sometimes, entire families share in the placenta meal. What Would Women Who Had Depression Do?

I’ve never considered myself to be a depressed person nor do I have a history f depression. However, I clearly remember one of the first nights I was home from the hospital. I was actually leaning over my husband’s shoulder, crying for no apparent reason. I didn’t know why I was crying or what made me cry. Brooke Shields had postpartum depression that lasted for months. It takes four days for the body to recognize that the placenta, responsible for many of the mother’s

hormone regulatory functions, is now gone. Then it takes two weeks for the body to start production of the hormones again. Helpful Husband Makes a Big Difference!

That’s when my husband looked down at me and said, “Let’s start taking your placenta pills.” And within a couple of hours, I was doing laundry and cooking dinner as if nothing had ever happened, without a care in the world. There are many benefits in taking placenta pills. Not only do they balance out hormones, but they also increased my energy level. I was cooking, cleaning and doing laundry within two weeks after giving birth because of the placenta pills. I definitely noticed a huge difference in days that I took the pills from the days I didn’t. Placenta pills are also known to enhance milk production and quicken the recovery from birth. They may also help by shortening postpartum bleeding, assist the uterus to return to size and increase postpartum iron levels. Baby blues is not something one plans to have but it is something that I could do my part and take steps to definitely help treat it. I am not only extremely satisfied but also extremely blessed to have had such an incredible birth and post-partum period. I will definitely be contacting Tamara for all future placenta encapsulations for additional births and recommend Tamara’s Placenta services to every expectant mother. Tired of Looking Tired? By Dr. Donna (ret.), Editor

This device is the Health & Fitness Magazine choice of the year for discovering your Holy Grail of Youth at home!

H

ave you stopped looking in the mirror? If so, your answer could be a simple handheld device called Tua Viso.

Change Your Tiredness Into Radiance The good news about tiredness in the face is that it can be changed into vibrancy, which re-winds the aging clock at least 10 years. The return to vibrancy occurs based on sound muscle physiology principles. As we age, the body stops producing hormones such as DHEA, the precursor to the male and female hormones. Some of these hormones are responsible for muscle tone throughout the body, including the 30 muscles of the face. The skin of the face lies on and is anchored to a structural “carpet” made of muscles. With aging, the face starts to develop a tired look because these muscles become lax. The more you let this tired look go on in time, the more difficult it is to get back the muscle tone that contributes to a more youthful appearance. Taking hormones doesn’t reverse the aging signs although you may feel better. Just like exercising with weights restores the body’s muscle tone and after time, results in a more youthful body, exercising the face muscles can do the same for the face. But there is no gym yet that includes different exercises for the 30 facial muscles! And although facial exercises can be performed at home without a device, doing them right is quite complicated and does take dedication.

Technology Has Proven That Electrical Stimulation Works The real answer is to exercise the muscles of the face with electric pulses from the Tua Viso. This device creates muscle tension, which restores the tone in a harmless, selective and rapid manner. This type of exercise produces a visible muscle contraction, causing the muscles to increase in volume. Created in Italy but available worldwide, Tua Viso is well-known for its Non-Surgical Facelift. It is held on the face at different locations to stimulate the muscles and, while the muscles are electrically stimulated, the circulation to the tissues results bringing plenty of oxygen and nutrition to the tissues. You’ll notice a new glow to the face from the very first time you use it. And over a week or a month, the sine wave electrical stimulation creates collagen production. Your face starts shaping up! I found this out firsthand, and noticed greater balance in the muscles of my face as well as better lift. Wrinkles Disappear and the Cheeks and Jawline are Lifted Tua Viso is an electronic unit for facial gymnastics. When the muscles underneath the skin are stimulated, they lift the face and smooth out the wrinkles. This results in a firmer face and neck, higher cheeks, and the elimination of double chins ad bags under the eyes. The electric pulses are transmitted to the skin via two electrodes covered by small, round, spring-loaded sponge domes. The electrodes have their own reservoir for water that is used during the entire treatment session. The pulse feels like a massage to the face. Simple Instructions to Use To use Tua Viso, simply fill the water reservoir, turn it on, and position it on the area of the face to be treated. A guide to where to place the electrodes is included. Then allow the muscles to be stimulated for at least one minute. A digital timer counts down the

seconds left for stimulation and chimes when you are finished. Then move on to the next muscle. The entire process is best done in front of a mirror to make sure that you get the desired effect. Tua Viso is lightweight, runs on a 9 volt battery and is carefully calculated so that each muscle group of the face you use it on will get the exercise it needs. Best of all, you don’t need any expensive creams that you are dependent upon. And interestingly, the company has determined where to place the device based on how plastic surgeons reconstruct the face. You can expect a big improvement in the face, neck, chin and jawline. Just follow the instructions, and postpone your appointment for plastic surgery! For additional information on the Tua Viso, please contact Carl Johnson at Tua USA. The toll free contact number is 1-800-550-4830. If you wish to purchase a Tua Viso, you may do so at www.tua-viso-usa.net. H&F

Who Killed the Hemp Plant?

W

hat’s better, hemp or cotton? I bet you probably already know the answer, but I’ll elaborate anyway. Cotton has been our major textile crop in the U.S. for many years. Why? Well, one can only guess. While cotton does make a nice fabric and is relatively strong, hemp has proven to be a much superior plant with a plethora of attributes that begs the question, why? Hemp has been cultivated for at least 12,000 years. The ancients knew the basic benefits and relied on it as a textile crop for many things. The seafaring folk used hemp for sails and ropes for millenia. As a matter of fact, the word canvass is derived from cannibis. It was a required crop of the American colonies, and remained a major crop until the 1950s. Did you know... • Henry Ford experimented with hemp in his auto manufacturing. • BMW is experimenting with it to make cars more recyclable.

• Much of birdseed has hemp seeds. • The oil once greased machinery. •M ost paints, resins, shellac and varnish were made with flax seed and hemp oils. •R udolf Diesel designed his motor to run on hemp oil. •K imberly Clark uses it in their factory in France to make bibles because paper from it lasts longer and doesn’t yellow. •C onstruction products like MDF, OSB, beams, studs and posts. •C an be used superiorly in over 25,000 products. •G eorge Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp.

Want to Prevent Cancer? Go to the Forest. By Dr. Donna (ret. D.C.), Editor

D

International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology, Li and Kawada explained how they came to this conclusion.

id you have a chance to get away for the last holiday? If so, by any chance, did you go to a national forest or heavily wooded area?

They took stressed out males and female human subjects to the laboratory, measured their levels of stress hormones as well as their natural killer cell activity, anti-cancer protein levels (perforin, granzymes A and B, and granulysin inside cancer killing cells). Then the researchers took them out to a beautiful forest park for several hours. The forest park criterion for the researchers was that the forest could not be in a city. Li and Kawada discovered that the volunteers had decreased stress hormone levels and their anti-cancer activity increased quite dramatically. But there was something else that was very important about this study: The stress hormone levels of the volunteers stayed at lower levels for more than 30 days after the trip. If you did, you did something good for your body. You boosted your own immune system. It’s not just the beautiful trees and fresh, clean air that is responsible for this wonderful physiological effect. That’s what Q. Li and T. Kawada at the Department of Hygiene and Public Health at the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan report. In their study, which appeared in the January to March 2011 Supplemental Issue of the 24

And their natural killer cells and anti-cancer proteins were more active for more than 30 days as well! What caused this type of physiological reaction to occur? Something called phytoncides that are released from the trees. It’s quite exciting research, don’t you think? It seems to me that the American Cancer Society should make use of this research now, as should hospitals. H&F WWW.HEALTHFITNESS.US

Who Killed the Hemp Plant? Industrial hemp and marijuana are both classified as Cannibis Sativa. A species with hundreds of varieties. It is a member of the mulberry family. The industrial strains are bred to maximize fiber and seed and/or oil, while marijuana is bred to maximize THC. While they look alike to the untrained eye, they are easily distinguishable. Industrial breeds have a THC content of .05% and 1%. Marijuana’s content is much higher, around 20%. This renders industrial breeds all but unsmokable. Many of the varieties in North America have been lost. Seed banks were never maintained and therefore will have to be re-introduced by new genetic breeding, using both foreign and domestic ‘ditchweed’ strains that went feral after cultivation ended. What’s worse, is many state National Guard units spend their weekends eradicating these strains in the ignorant belief that they are helping stop drug use. Duh... There was a 1938 Popular Mechanics issue that claimed hemp to be the “New Billion Dollar Crop”. The reason? Hemp is much stronger than cotton. The fibers are longer, stronger, more absorbent and more mildew resistant than cotton. And, fabrics made with at least one-half hemp block the sun’s UV rays more than any other fabric. It can be made into a variety of fabrics, including linen quality. Did you know... · Growers cannot hide marijuana in their fields. The tight rows and pollenization requirements will ruin any marijuana hiding attempts. And the industrial breeds are usually harvested before they go to seed. · It can be made into fine quality paper. The long fibers allow such paper to be recycled several times more than wood-based paper. · Because of the low lignin

content, it can be pulped using less chemicals than with wood. Its natural brightness can do away with the need to use chlorine bleach, which means no toxic dioxin being dumped into rivers and streams. Instead, they can use hydrogen peroxide, which is gentler and kinder to the environment. · It grows well in a variety of climates and soil types. It is naturally resistant to pests, which eliminates the need for dangerous pesticides. No herbicides are needed, due to the tightly spaced competitive nature of the plant. On top of that, it leaves

a virtually weed-free field for growing a following crop. · Hemp can displace wood fiber and save forests for watershed, wildlife habitat, recreation, oxygen production, carbon sequestration (which will reduce global warming), and many other benefits. · Used as a rotator crop, the soil needs no fertilizer, the plant actually replaces vital nutrients into the soil drained by vegetable crops. · It can yield 3 to 8 tons of fiber per acre. This is four times more than an average forest yields. There are many uses for this 'high' quality plant. Not just in industry, but in make-up, foodstuffs and medicine. So, one must wonder… “who killed the hemp plant?” H&F

o you and your family eat enough healthy fruits and green vegetables? If not, try drinking green smoothies as a simple and easy way to make sure that you consume the recommended daily amounts of vitamin rich and nutritious fruits and vegetables. Smoothies enable you to consume fruits and vegetables in their raw form, thereby, retaining all of their nutritional value and strength. You can boost the benefits of the smoothies you drink by adding what I classify as the 5 key superfoods: • Chlorella • Spirulina • Alfalfa • Wheatgrass • Barley grass By adding these to your smoothies, you end up with a beverage that is power packed with vitamins, minerals and enzymes that increase your vitality, boost your immune system and can potentially increase your red blood cell count if it’s low. The superfoods may be purchased in powder form from your local health food store or reputable Internet vendor. #1: Chlorella – This one is renowned for its detoxification properties, especially the breakdown of heavy metal toxins such as mercury, cadmium, and lead. It helps you to flush out any toxicity to pesticides such as DDT and PCB while boosting your immune system. Chlorella is green algae and its name derives from the word, chlorophyll. It contains more of this substance per gram (3% to 5%) than any other plant. #2: Spirulina – This single cell blue-green algae has a name that means spiral shape. It is an excellent source of protein, non-animal source of vitamin B12, vitamin

5 Key Superfoods to Energize Your Green Smoothies

Basic Green Smoothie Recipe Ingredients Fresh raw greens (Kale, Spinach, Salad greens, Water Cress, etc.) These should make up about 40% of the smoothie. Fresh fruits (Bananas, Apples, Papaya, Mango, etc.) should make up 50% to 60% of the smoothie. Add powdered superfoods mixture in the blender, see instructions, below. If the fruit is not sufficiently sweet enough for your taste, you can add 3-4 dried dates or a handful of raisins to add a natural sweetener. I do not suggest that you sweeten with regular sugar, brown or otherwise. Directions Put all of the ingredients in a blender, add some water and blend to a smooth consistency. Add more water as you blend, if necessary. Mixing and Adding Superfoods Powders to Green Smoothies 1. To create your superfoods powder mix, combine 2 teaspoons of each powder for each day of the week in a small bowl. Cover it tightly. 2. When ready to make your smoothie, blend your fruits and vegetables and then refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 3. Next add 2 teaspoons or more of your green superfood powder mixture and blend well with 8 oz of the fruit/vegetable mix. 3. Drink an 8 oz. glass or more per day to achieve optimal benefits. 10 Natural Energy Boosters By Jade Marie Parker

M

odern life can be demanding and before you know it, your energy level is bottom low. What do most of us usually do in this situation? We take one more cup of coffee or some energy drink that give us the jitters or keeps us awake at night. But there are a number of natural energy boosters that are gentle and effective without the unpleasant side effects. 1. Start your day with a glass of water. That will jump-start your metabolism, help flush out unwanted toxins and hydrate your body. 2. Stretch. That will wake up most muscles of your body giving you an instant boost of energy. 3. Have a Tulsi tea. Tulsi also known as holy basil is considered the queen of herbs in India. It helps our bodies “adapt” to different forms of stressors — environmental, physical, mental, emotional — promoting a sense of wellbeing and supporting immunity and stamina. 4. Ginseng is another adaptogen and like Tulsi, it helps in normalizing physical functions depending on individual needs. It helps lower stress levels, and improves energy, memory and immune system. It also stabilizes blood sugar so you don’t crash when you’re hungry. It increases performance and gives you an overall feeling of wellness.

5. Gotu Kola is one of the main herbs used to lessen fatigue and depression because of its high content of nutrients and healing phytochemicals. It energizes the central nervous system and rebuilds energy reserves but unlike caffeine, gotu kola also helps improve sleep at night. It is regarded as one of the most important rejuvenating herbs in Ayurvedic Medicine. 6. Royal jelly is a creamy white substance produced by the worker bees to feed the queen in beehives. That’s what makes the queen so much bigger then the other bees. In humans, when taken as a nutritional supplement, it’s known to promote enhanced 26

energy, healthier hair and skin, a more youthful appearance, a stronger immune system, and reduced stress levels. Royal jelly promotes health and energy and is also thought to have antioxidant properties that fight damage from free-radicals. 7. Spirulina is a single-celled algae that unlike many other plants, creates proteins and sugars just as animals do. It contains 60% all-vegetable protein, a great source of essential vitamins such as vitamin B12 (also called the “energy vitamin”), and phytonutrients such as the antioxidant beta-carotene, the rare essential fatty acid GLA, sulfolipids, glycolipids and polysaccharides. Spirulina is an ideal anti-aging food and it’s used by athletes to improve performance by delivering energy and increasing stamina. 8. Maca, another adaptogen, is a rare and powerful member of the radish family that grows at the high altitudes of the Andean mountains. It’s also known as Peruvian ginseng and it is used as a folk remedy to increase stamina, energy, and sexual function. Maca root helps rebuild weak immune systems, restore mineral levels on poorly

nourished bodies, and regulate pituitary and adrenal hormones, elevating them when they’re too low or lowering them when they’re too high. 9. Physical activities like walking, jumping or running even if it is for a short time like 10 minutes, will increase your circulation giving you that boost of energy that will help you get through the day. Pair this with that glass of water for longer lasting effect. 10. Cayenne is a natural circulatory tonic that increases blood flow, making more oxygen run through your body, thereby making you feel more energized and alert. It’s a natural booster for the metabolism, improving digestion and strengthening the immune system. Cayenne also supports heart health. Try these natural energy boosters and you’d be surprised what simple additions to your diet and habits can do to make you feel more energized and alert. These changes will enable you to experience a fuller, happier and healthier life, so go for it! H&F

The pressure pushes the oxygen into the cells and you receive a 10-fold amount of oxygen,” said Dr. John Toth, D.O., director of the NorCal Hyperbarics in Roseville. He’s a family medicine practitioner with expertise in hyperbaric medicine. “We’ve seen improvements in those with dementia because the oxygen wakes up the brain cells,” Dr. Toth said. “In those with autism, the oxygen creates better speech, focus, and socialization skills. These are the right things we want to see in them.” Russian doctors use HBO successfully to reverse damage caused in those who have had strokes or heart attacks. Even Healthy People Can Benefit from HBO Although I had no infections, non-healing wounds, autism or dementia, I wondered if I would benefit by breathing 100% oxygen for an entire hour in the chamber. With Dr. Toth’s permission, I tried it out. Prior to the session, odd things were happening with my health. My joints were giving me excruciating pain for no apparent reason. I hadn’t been very productive for the past few weeks, finding it difficult to focus. Life wasn’t exciting anymore and I felt like giving up at times. HBO Preparation is Always Important The only HBO chambers that offer 100% oxygen are the ones in clinics or hospitals. These clinical chambers need a certified operator to run them since oxygen is very flammable, especially when the level is at 100%. Because of the flammability, you must wear only 100% cotton clothes (or gown). “Because we’re dealing with oxygen, it’s important to follow all the rules,” Dr. Toth said. “Make up, lotions and hair spray can contain volatile agents that become flammable so don’t use them before treatment.”

The chamber is a long, cylindrical unit with clear plexiglass on it. A cushioned mattress rolls out of the chamber, you hop on and the operator pushes you inside and shuts the door. Water may be sipped at your leisure. What It’s Like Inside the Chamber I felt a little claustrophobic in the first few minutes but after I realized there really was no impending doom, I let go of that useless belief. Plus, the cooking TV shows on chocolate kept me amused. As the operator increases the pressure inside the chamber, it feels no different than sitting on any airplane gaining altitude. Most people will experience ear popping sounds; however, drinking water or swallowing takes care of it. The time spent inside the chamber is relaxing. There is a clean fresh scent of oxygen. About 20 minutes into the session, I didn’t feel any different but then felt my neck, back and pelvis realigning itself, as if an invisible chiropractor was inside the chamber! This continued until the very end. The pressure inside the chamber is associated with the healing effects. Higher pressure is used for someone with a deep bone infection because the oxygen needs plenty of penetrating power to get all the way down to the level of the bone. In my case, I was at the pressure of someone who had neurological disorders. I felt quiet and more alert. Once in awhile the sound of oxygen rushing into the chamber caught my attention, but other than that, it almost seemed boring since I like to be busy.

Effects Felt Were Never Expected Before I knew it, the hour was up. I sat up on the bed and stood up to get dressed, feeling just a little bit woosey back at regular atmospheric pressure, but this passed soon. However, something was very different: joint pain was totally gone; I could move in any direction with ease. I touched my toes without effort. My skin looked as if it had a radiant glow. When I got in my van, I had no problem sitting up straight and had to readjust the rear view mirror. I felt grounded and happy. My body smelled fresh and clean; even my teeth felt cleaner. The oxygen had deodorized me from within. Dr. Toth mentioned that oxygen was detoxifying; here was the proof. Looking into the mirror, there was a new freshness. A few days later, a friend commented that I looked 20 years younger. Oxygen is healing, I just had no idea that it could truly be such a healing agent. It was better than an hour at a spa, by far! HBO centers have opened their doors to the public, as long as you can meet their medical criteria. Insurance may or may not cover the cost; 5 to 40 treatments are used in cases of serious illness, but even one treatment can unleash a “new you”. HBO is in my budget this year! Simplify, Simplify, Simplify! By Damon Paveglio

implify, simplify, simplify!” exhorts Henry David Thoreau, New England sage and author of the classic back-tonature tome, Walden. Long ago did I take his advice to heart, and as a result my professional career, self-confidence, and general ability to navigate my way through the modern world have all suffered immeasurably. Thanks a lot, Henry! Now, whenever I interact with my younger friends, colleagues at work, or any normal, functioning adult, I often feel like a deaf, blind, dumb orangutan fresh off the boat from Victorian England. It’s not easy being a 19th century man stuck in the god-forsaken future. On my first day at my new job I had to ask my colleague how to insert a CD into my computer. Not exactly a good first impression. (Note to my fellow orangutans: there’s a little button on the side of your computer, which, if you press it, a little tray will come popping out, scaring you. This is where you place the CD).

cell phone, I was delighted to discover (accidentally, through random button-pushing) that it can also serve as an alarm clock! (Is anyone else aware of this?) I still don’t know how to “burn” a CD (sounds dangerous). I don’t know what an “app” is except that it can make your phone sound like a light saber. Hell, I still use a paper map! I’m not bragging: I’m confessing. I do admit to having mastered email, but every time I use a little smiley face emoticon, a little piece of me dies inside. No, there is nothing manly about a smiley face emoticon, and the fact that I find myself using them frequently only adds to my despair (I treat my occasional bouts of depression with a daily jog or perhaps a Wodehouse shortstory, rather than pills—another sign of my hopelessly old-fashioned mentality). Can you imagine John Keats penning a cute little smiley face in one of his lavishly sculpted letters? Besides email, I also know how to use a microwave, a vacuum cleaner, and various and sundry music-playing devices (just not that stupid i-pod contraption…yet). My

I often ask my colleagues questions like: “What’s the difference between an Acrobat and a PDF?” and “What exactly does a JPEG do?” and “What is a ‘drive’ and how does it differ from a ‘server’?” Whenever I’m standing around the water cooler with my co-workers and they are discussing the latest episode of The Wire or American Idol, I have to refrain from wondering aloud whether Dickens’ novels are excessively verbose or merely pleasantly rich. (Nobody likes a goddam book-reader—those antiquated, elitist snobs!) Here are some words I hear frequently and have no clue as to what they mean: “streaming,” “pixels,” “broadband,” “Blueray,” Bluetooth,” “domain,” “HTML”—if that is a word (acronyms are often used for words, now—another sign of the coming apocalypse). The list goes on indefinitely. I had to have a friend download a ringtone for my cellphone. (Bowie’s “Major Tom” will probably remain my ringtone until the day I die.) Five years after I purchased said

point is: I’m not anti-modernity. I enjoy the energy of a bustling city. I take pride in being a hip, sharp-witted, moderately cynical kind of dude. Hell, I even have a beard and an arm full of tats! Despite all my technological inadequacies, and the frustrations I often experience at work, I consider myself an exceptionally happy individual. I feel “connected” to my immediate surroundings—the trees, the weather, my neighbors (physical neighbors, not cyber-neighbors). My community is not “virtual,” it consists of the midtown grid and wherever the lite-rail takes me (nothing helps me feel more a part of the community—the good, the bad, and the ugly—quite like a trip on public-transportation. Here is humanity in all its guises!) My community is not “global” except in the sense that downtown Sacramento is an incredibly diverse city full of people from all over the planet. My world is geographically quite small—from Alhambra Boulevard to the river—but as infinite as the novels I read and the people I meet in the local café. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

6. Post-workout stretching. This is key to maintain flexibility and functional strength. These stretches should be slow/static stretches and should be held for 30-45 seconds; you should settle into each stretch. Remember, stretching should feel good, not hurt.

2. Mix-up your workout set. Establish a workout strategy and goal. Include tempo/speed bursts, sustained zone 3, and high-intensity work. 3. Vary your workouts. TBF recommends 3 workouts in each discipline each week as follows: 1. Base. Work on base fitness. 2. Tempo. This workout is shorter and higher intensity. We call it “short and sweet”. 3. Endurance. Build your aerobic endurance and stamina by adding an additional 10 minutes each week. 4. Every workout finishes with a warm-down (10+ minutes of zone 1/easy). The warm-down prepares your body for the regeneration that is to come. This is the time when your body actually gets stronger and more fit. Flush metabolic waste/lactic acid from the body, provide the body with oxygenated blood and kick-off the recovery process.

more fat-burning during your workout, and you will be much less likely to “bonk”!

5. Fuel early and often. You have about one hour of glycogen storage after a 24-hr rest period. However, don’t wait until the tank is on “E” to begin your fueling. TBF recommends that you start fueling about 20 minutes into your workout. This technique will help avoid a fueling deficit, encourage

7. Post-workout fueling. You have about 30 minutes to get your muscles the nutrients they need after exercise. This means you need to consume your post-workout fuel within about 15 minutes of finishing your workout. So, have what I call a post-workout fuel plan! You will get more out of your workout and you won’t be ravished and over eat 90 minutes later when you get home. t is absolutely imperative to be prepared for anything while backpacking through the wilderness; you never know what situation might be encountered. Your backpack is your lifeline, holding all the gear and supplies you need to survive in a situation away from society. However, space in your pack is limited. Since it is impossible to pack enough gear to prepare for every possible disaster, smart backpackers equip themselves with survival skills instead. Skills don’t take up space or add weight, and they decrease your reliance on physical gear so you can survive longer with less. Having the right skills and a few basic tools, like an LED flashlight and a hunting knife, will increase your chances of survival. Here’s a list of skills backpackers should acquire: 1. Start a fire without a match. If you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere, staying warm is your biggest concern. Hypothermia can kill you more quickly than dehydration or starvation. You might have brought waterproof matches, but what if you lose them or run out? Smart survivalists can start a fire with just a sporting knife and a few other materials. It takes practice, but it’s possible to start a fire using the primitive friction method; you could even do without the sporting knife. You should learn how to proficiently strike a spark various ways, including using the friction technique, before venturing out.

5. Signal for rescue. If you do end up injured or stranded, someone will eventually come looking for you. You need to be able to get their attention and communicate your position. An emergency whistle is a great tool; the sound carries farther than voice and takes less energy. You should also be able to send a visual signal with your LED flashlight. Teach yourself multiple ways to attract the attention of a search party, like how to emit a distress signal with an LED flashlight or how to build a signal fire.

2. Purify water to drink. Hydration is your next priority. You can only carry so much drinking water, and water from lakes or streams could contain dangerous contaminants that need to be removed before it’s safe to drink. You could bring water purification tablets or another filtration method, but it’s also a good idea to learn how to manually strain, boil and distill water for drinking, in case your water runs out before help arrives. 3. Obtain sustenance. There are plenty of edible plants that will keep you alive, but there are poisonous plants as well. The trick is understanding what to look for and how to eat it. Learn how to identify local edible flora and dangerous plants to avoid. Your hunting knife will be a valuable tool to help you harvest and prepare these edibles. 4. Treat minor injuries. If you become injured, you need to know how to treat yourself. Heat stroke, blisters, sprained ankles, burns, punctures, snake bites and infections are just some of the common issues backpackers face. Learn how to treat these injuries even without the first aid supplies in your pack.

Parvo Treatment: The Rising Cost Of Vet Treatment By Mark Farrar

P

arvo treatment has always been a relatively expensive affair if you take your dog to the vet, but these days, it’s way out of hand for many people - bills of anywhere from $500 to over $12,000 are typical, and that’s just to treat a single animal. Why is this, especially given that many vets use treatment protocols that are outdated at best? Let’s face it, Parvo today is nothing like the virus from the 1990s - it’s mutated (we’re now on the fifth major variant with the 2c strain) into something much more aggressive, it’s more easily transmitted, symptoms can appear at a greatly accelerated rate (dogs can die just hours after their first bout of diarrhea), and it’s harder to treat.

Before the vet even starts on the Parvo treatment itself, he will do a test to see whether it is indeed Parvo. While having the test done in the clinic is a lot faster than waiting for a full blood work-up to be sent off to the lab, it is not as accurate as many vets make out - false positives and false negatives can occur. If your dog does test negative, the vet will assume (because they claim the tests are infallible) that your dog doesn’t have Parvo, but then here’s the kicker: they will suggest a Parvo shot, to “protect” your pet.

They may also prescribe anti-emetics to prevent vomiting, but because these too are chemical-based drugs, they too may result in additional vomiting, not less. Vets also claim that they need to do additional clean-up with Parvo cases (because of all the vomiting and diarrhea), and hire additional staff (especially those where they provide care during the night too, which seems to be somewhat rare). And then some vets will insist on blood transfusions (note the plural, here), each of which can cost $200 or more. But should all of this really add up to a Parvo treatment bill of several thousand dollars?

However, many vets still cling to the traditional treatment of IV fluids and antibiotics, which are proving to be far less effective against the newer strain.

If your dog actually does have Parvo, then vaccinating him at this stage is about the worst thing you can do - we know of dogs that have not shown any symptoms of Parvo who died within five hours of being given completely unnecessary shots. (In fact, even the vaccine manufacturers state that their vaccines should only be given to healthy dogs - and a dog that has been infected with Parvo is definitely not healthy!)

We know of people who have been charged $150 just for the IV fluids, which are basically nothing more than a bag of salty water. Office visits alone will cost you $50 or so, and you rarely get away with just a single one.

And if your dog didn’t have Parvo before being vaccinated, the shots can actually give him the virus - with full symptoms and the same life-threatening consequences. So, what other costs might you incur?

However, there is another option, which is not only less expensive (think $100 - $200 or so, including overnight shipping, and that’s enough to treat multiple dogs) but also more effective (90%, as opposed to 50%).

Well, all traditional vets will prescribe antibiotics and that will add to your bill, of course. Not to mention that these antibiotics won’t help treat the Parvo at all - Parvo is a virus, and these drugs are designed to attack bacteria; they also can have sideeffects that are either the same as Parvo (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea) or even worse (Metronidazole is reasonably anticipated to be

We think not, especially when you consider that most vets will only give your dog a 50% chance of surviving this virus. That’s an awful lot of money for odds that are no better than tossing a coin.

Better than that, the products in our home Parvo Treatment Kits are 100% natural and totally safe (i.e. NO chemicals, NO garlic and NO alcohol, all of which can have disastrous side-effects). These kits also come complete with ParvoBuster’s proprietary Parvo Treatment Guide that tells you all you need to know about treating Parvo at home, with no need for specialised equipment or training - and no needles either. Visit www.ParvoEmergencyTreatment.com to find out more - regardless of whether your dog has Parvo right now, or whether you want to be prepared and have a kit on hand should this nasty virus strike at some time in the future, we can help protect your pet. Mental Skills: Take Your Game to the Next Level By Saralyn Bregman, Ph.D.

W

seeing himself imitating the moves of fighters he admires. He maintains a solid belief in his path and abilities emphatically stating, “Never waiver, to believe anything less is contrary to meeting my goals.”

ithout mental skills, the game may be only half won. When thinking about the greatest athletes in the world, all have one thing in common – mental skills that put them at the top of their respective sport or discipline. We are always performing in various aspects of our lives, whether sports, career, academics, etc. Developing mental skills can assist in taking you to the top of your game in any area of life. Throughout this article I cite real life examples from elite athlete, Teshawn Walls who, after a professional football career, chose to embark on a professional career in mixed martial arts. Change is challenging on any level. Stepping out of our comfort zones and mindless habits requires mind-full attention to facilitate change. Taking risks with doing something new requires prioritizing and clear goal setting. When Teshawn chose to change sports, he utilized mental skills gained in his football career to accomplish the transition. Having played football for many years, his athleticism was already in place but he recognized the need for new skill sets. He created very specific and measurable short and long-term goals to develop each skill. Goal setting carries over to any area where one needs the ability to consistently evaluate and reevaluate progress. Using mental pictures is a powerful tool and an important key to success. How you see yourself and your abilities affects performance now and in the future. Mental images can be used to practice at times when physical practice is not feasible. Creating images in one’s mind sets one’s intent and outcome potentials. Positive images of performance will likely result in positive results. Negative images and beliefs are limiting and likely manifest negative results.

Setbacks are inevitable in sport and in life. Often people respond by becoming upset with themselves or others, or becoming emotionally overwhelmed. Using setbacks in a positive way creates opportunity for growth. One can mentally replay a game or an activity, finding lessons in things that were executed well and in areas needing improvement. Imaging skills must be practiced prior to experiencing setbacks. For example, Teshawn won his first fight but in mentally replaying it, he recognized what worked well for him and several areas in his game that required adjustment; i.e., better skill set for ground fighting, use of multiple body parts as weapons. He again set very specific long and short-term goals for himself as he approached his next opponent. This process of self-review is imperative when taking oneself to the next level regardless of winning/ losing or passing /failing. Coupled with mental images are beliefs about one’s self. Are your beliefs helpful or are they limiting? When I asked Teshawn how he maintains his level of confidence he relayed the importance of the images he has in his head,

In life, the ability to control events and outcomes are illusionary. The only true areas of control, whether in sport, career, school, or day to day activities, I label the ABC’s; Attitude, Behaviors, and Choices of how to engage in each. Outcome takes care of itself. Teshawn had made a list of winning behaviors/attitudes in service of his goals. Some examples are: • Diet and eat right. • Be a better person then the day before. • Stay busy stay working. The key to staying on top is to treat everything like it’s your 1st project / your first day at the office. • Always stay humble/calm and cool. • Always have time for others. When in doubt, ask yourself if your choices are in line with your goals or contrary and therefore limiting. Lastly, in every pursuit, focus drives consistent levels of performance. Appropriate focus means staying positive and fully connected. One must choose and then commit to developing focusing skills. There are a number of techniques that aim to improve one’s ability to focus so that well-learned skills become automatic and effortless, resulting in being physically and mentally present at all times. I want to thank Teshawn Walls for sharing examples as to how he approaches his mental game. You can see more about him and his career at www.teshawnwalls.com. Remember, mental training requires practice just as other skills. Consulting a sport psychologist can help in setting up a personalized mental training program for various performance needs whether in sport or life. How to Make Your First Bike Ride. . .A Safe Ride M

the importance of looking both ways before even attempting to cross the street? These are hugely important fundamentals that most adults aren’t aware of. For the sake of your child and yourself as parents, knowing these basic rules can mean the difference between coming home from an invigorating day of cycling or yet another tragic story to be read in the newspaper the following day.

y first taste of freedom just happened to coincide with my first bicycle crash. I had just looked behind me and was stunned to see my dad, whose steady hand had been holding the seat of my bike, was no longer keeping upright and indeed, I was riding my bike under my own power. I was simply elated and for just one moment I was king of the road! That’s when I hit the parked car. Ouch! To this day, I still don’t know where that car came from.

I encourage all those who wish to introduce their child to the joys of cycling to gather as much information as possible, from as many sources as they can. As I mentioned, your local bike shops will gladly assist in this pursuit. In our Natomas community we have available to us the North Natomas Transportation Management Association, as well as the South Natomas Transportation Management Association, whom both offer frequent free clinics on cycling safety and maintenance. Anyone can avail themselves of these services.

So what is the point, one might wonder? Well, I love my dad. Don’t get me wrong, but in hindsight his teaching technique left a lot to be desired. Hopefully the following tips may help prevent a similar debacle from happening to another child. First, please invest in a helmet. For one, it is California State law; all children under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while cycling. The goal of this article ideally is to help your child avoid crashes, which a helmet cannot prevent. What a helmet can do is prevent a serious head injury. Although the greatest number of cycling-related head injuries occur amongst boys 10 to 14 years of age, everyone should consider investing in a helmet. Your life may literally depend on it, and this should be emphasized to riders of all ages. Second, the bicycle itself should be assessed. Is it the proper size for the child and has it been properly fitted? If one is uncertain as to what constitutes proper size and fit, one can always seek assistance from their local bike shop, or reference numerous sources from the internet. It is during this assessment that one should consider the brakes. I am daily struck dumb with bewilderment at the number of children’s bicycles that arrive at our shop with either no braking system at all or those with brakes so poorly adjusted and rendered useless. Please allow your child the luxury of functional brakes. The thought of them entering a traffic environment without something to stop them should frighten every parent. Now with the helmet and a functioning bicycle, we can begin the process of teaching the young rider the fundamentals of riding.

It would be ideal if one could find an area that is wide open with which the child’s first trip out will be met with few, if any obstacles. It is here that an emphasis on pedaling and steering can be placed, and their sense of balance can be honed. Be aware that most cycling accidents occur with stationary objects, pedestrians and other cyclists, and not necessarily with automobiles. Helping your child become aware of his/her surroundings will minimize many potential accidents.

For most children, learning how to ride a bicycle will be their first exposure to the wide open world about them. It is my hope that we can make that first adventure a safe one. Once a parent feels comfortable that their child has mastered the above techniques, and are ready to venture on their own, they should also know the rules of the road. Can a cyclist ride through a cross walk? Can that same cyclist ride on the sidewalk? No to one and yes to the second, incidentally. Have they grasped

ometimes you have to just get out for the day and expose yourself to a whole new world of adventure, freedom and challenge. At the California Capital Air Show at the Mather Airport on Sept. 10th to 11th between 9 am and 5 pm, you’ll have the opportunity to do that and more! Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen, camera and earplugs and allow yourself to be entertained and educated and make some new friends. This year you can expect to see the six pilot Patriot Jet Team, the Shockwave Jet Truck, the T-33 Shooting Star, the U-2S Dragon Lady Spyplane, Otto the Helicopter, T-38 Talon multi-ship and the C-17A Globemaster III, among dozens of other entertainers and displays. Military and civilian performers will be breath-taking.

Get your photo taken next to the Amphibious Husky, Velocity, Pober Junior Ace, or the P510 Mustang in the civilian displays. Walk through the huge Air Force planes to get a better understanding of what goes on when the military protects you. It will be difficult to miss the Navy’s F-18 Super Hornet Demonstration Team and the F-15 Strike Team as they scream across the sky, flown by some of the world’s most elite pilots.

“Each year we strive to bring new and exciting performers, unique aircraft, and interactive displays to Sacramento, and this year will be an event that you will never forget!” said Darcy Brewer, executive director of the California Capital Airshow. “Tora!Tora!Tora! is making its first trip ever to Northern California and fans will not be disappointed. Tora is a choreographed, living history lesson with pyrotechnics and precision flying all set to music, but the show certainly doesn’t stop there.” You might even have a chance to speak to Patty Wagstaff, who’s in the National Aviation Hall of Fame and is a six-time recipient of the First Lady of Aerobatics Betty Skelton Award. She’ll be doing fancy, hard core, rock ‘n roll aerobautics never seen before in her Extra 300SX single seat monoplane which exceeds the maximum performance capability of most fighter aircraft. In her spare time in ‘regular’ life, Patty works as a stunt pilot and aerial coordinator for films and television. You’ll read about her more in our next issue. Additionally, the air show will pay homage to the tenth anniversary of 9/11 as well as hosting Pearl Harbor honorees and their families from across the western United States as a tribute to the 70th anniversary of December 7, 1941. write this as we all approach a singular day in American history, September 11, 2011. It was just another day in 2001, until hundreds of millions of Americans woke up to see terrorists crashing aircraft into the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and but for the spirit of our fellow citizens on Flight 93, the White House or Capitol would also have been struck. Thousands of people died that day in a surprise attack against our values, beliefs and independence. It was a tremendous shock, a wake up call and a rallying point for our nation. I look back at that day in light of another tragedy that just occurred at the Indiana State Fair. This time it was a natural disaster as rogue hurricane force winds toppled a stage onto a waiting concert crowd killing seven and injuring hundreds. What strikes me most about these two events, which are clearly seen as they happened, and shared repeatedly on video, was how many of those outside the disaster zone ran toward the scene, not away from it. This is the spirit that makes Americans heroes day in, day out, year round from 1776 to 2011 and beyond. As citizens and free individuals we American’s stand up for what’s right, rally around each other and run toward danger rather than away from it.

the World Series, after battling for more than 50 years to accomplish their goal. It wasn’t a baseball superstar, or ‘big bopper’ hitting balls over the far horizon, but a group of working baseball pros repeatedly rising to the occasion to win when the odds were largely against them. “None of those Giants is a ‘hero’ but together they all are,” is how he described them. Not unlike Americans who go about their lives without thinking about being a hero, but truly each of us as citizens will step up to meet the occasion as ‘heroes’ are required. As a martial arts instructor I often see this aspect of our fellow citizens as adults and children push forward in our

classes to win another belt, triumph in competition or help a fellow student conquer a new technique. While most martial arts come to us from foreign shores, the values and practices taught are really consistent with our American way of life. Courage, integrity, perseverance and indomitable spirit are inherent in what our students strive for in becoming martial artists and Black Belts. Seeing students grasp the basics, develop technique and build character in battling to win the next belt level is a reflection of that American spirit that makes us run toward danger, to rise to the occasion when heroes are required. As Americans, who can forget the firemen, police and other citizens running toward the World Trade Center to help those innocents struck down on a regular day by terrorists who really never understood us at all. I’m proud to be an American and I won’t forget what makes us different, better and more productive than anyone else on Earth. God bless America. H&F
