SEPTEMBER EDITION 2010

What’s in a Cigarette? In April 1994, five major American cigarette companies submitted a list of what’s in their product. Here’s a list of 599 different additives found in them, and approved by the U.S. Government. Although many of these substances are found in foods and are on the Generally Regarded as Safe List (GRAS List), these ingredients are approved as food additives, not tested by burning them. It is said that 4000+ chemicals are released when a cigarette is burning. Many are toxic and considered known carcinogens.

OUR ADVERTISING WORKS! EFFEC T IVE

“Hello...I’ve been anxious to let you know that the article (front page) in your Oct.’07 issue has certainly helped my business. My webmaster has even posted it on the homepage of my web site – and, it’s brought nothing but the best information concerning Life Sources, Inc. to the public than any other publication in quite sometime. I want to take this opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally you for making this possible”-– and, a special “hi” to Dr. Donna for writing such a fantastic article. You folks are the best. Sincerely, Dr. McCreery “

EDITOR’S NOTES Fall is already here! Did you store up your vitamin D by being out in the sun during the summer? Luckily, here in California, we have an extra few months to do just that. This issue is loaded with solutions for your health, as always. You’ll find a proven topical product for pain relief and skin issues that even orthopedic physicians and physicians at the veteran hospitals use – see the cover story on page 20. Did you have a great time at the California Capital Air Show? We sure did! Lucky people who visited our booth received hearing protection for their kids and themselves and had a chance to pick up a free sample of healthy coffee! Yes, that’s right; coffee can actually be healthy! If you missed out, call us and we’ll tell you about it! This month, you can read about what it takes to become a pilot. For those who need new direction in life, flying provides a way to make decent money and the opportunity to hang out with people going places in many more ways than one. Send us a letter to the editor and tell us what’s on your mind… Have a great September! Editor Dr. Donna & H&F Magazine staff

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine,

Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughout Sacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. Thank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services. Sincerely, Brett A. Gottlieb, D.C.

hile walking down the street one day, a Corrupt Senator was tragically hit by a car and died. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. “Welcome to heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.” ”No problem, just let me in,” says the Senator. ”Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.” “Really? I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,” says the Senator. “I’m sorry, but we have our rules.”And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to the depths of hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening garb. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are all having such a good time that before the Senator realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. “Now it’s time to visit heaven.” Twenty-four hours pass with the Senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. “Well then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.” The Senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.” St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders. “I don’t understand,” stammers the Senator. “Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?” The devil smiles at him and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning. Today, you voted.” Vote wisely on November 2, 2010!

Low Cost Alternative to

Spinal Decompression Therapy For Disc Pain Health

from 12-24 and cost thousands of dollars. This has made many people think twice about having this treatment. I would like to tell you about a similar treatment that is much cheaper but achieves the same great results.

ost everyone that is suffering from neck or back pain has heard of non-surgical spinal decompression which many chiropractors have available in their offices. This technique has allowed many people to avoid surgery for conditions known as disc herniation and spinal stenosis. One reason people with neck or back pain might seek out spinal decompression is because it is less risky than having surgery. However, the one downside of non-surgical spinal decompression is the cost. Unfortunately, insurance companies will not pay for this treatment by chiropractors. Costs can run $150-$200 per visit. The number of visits can range

There is a hand-held device called a Vertebral Distraction Pump (VDP), which does the same thing as the expensive spinal decompression machines. This treatment is much more affordable for the average person. The cost of this treatment in my office, for example, is only $50 per visit. The VDP works by causing a “vacuum effect”, literally sucking the disc back into the center of the

vertebrae and away from the nerve that it is pinching. It’s like squeezing a tube of toothpaste and then letting go. When you squeeze the tube, toothpaste comes out of the tube but when you let go it gets sucked back into the tube. The VDP device grabs onto the spinous process of the vertebrae above and below the disc herniation and separates the two vertebrae. Then the VDP slowly bring the two vertebrae back together again, causing a “vacuum effect” which sucks the disc back into the center of the vertebrae above and below the disc herniation. MRI studies have confirmed that the VDP does

actually eliminate or reduce the disc herniation in some cases. If you are interested in seeing if the VDP can help your condition, I am offering one free treatment to the first 5 callers. My office number is 916-965-7155. If you are not one of the first 5 callers you will receive a 30% discount on your first treatment if you make an appointment by 10/15/2010.

Q: Help me Ronda!

A: Dear Hurt Sister,

When you set expectations on how another person ‘should’ act in a situation, you set yourself up for a life of disappointments. Wanting your brother to punish your sister so she will be nice to you is asking him to behave like her. You may want to consider how your expectations can create a wedge between you and your brother. Focus on how you may be able to resolve the issue with your sister and drop the expectations of others fighting your battles for you. If your sister wants a relationship with you, she will respond more favorably if you are the one to approach her wanting to reconcile. Keep in mind that difficult situations bring with them the opportunity to learn from the experience and grow as a person.

A: Dear Devoted Debbie,

First I must commend you for taking the steps to protect yourself against pregnancy and for wanting to protect yourself from STDs. Although being a devoted girlfriend is an admirable value, not using condoms with someone who had several partners is playing Russian roulette with your life. Secondly, when you go against your initial choice that your boyfriend wear a condom or take the tests, it reflects that you don’t trust yourself. If this boy really loves you, he will honor your wishes. If not, at least you didn’t take the chance on giving up your virginity, and possibly your life, against your better judgment.

The problem is whenever we are together at a family gathering my brother talks to her and doesn’t include me in the conversation. I’m a 17–year-old girl who is considering having sex. My boyfriend is 19 and has had sex with other girls prior to me and assures me he doesn’t have any STDs. I have started taking the birth control pill to protect me from pregnancy but he says he doesn’t want to wear a condom and doesn’t need to be tested for STDs. I love him and want to be with him but I’m afraid he will be upset with me if I insist on him wearing a condom or taking the tests. Should I just trust he is okay and enjoy my first sexual experience? - Devoted Debbie

Before you start, you will have to be at least 16 years of age to get your Student Pilot license, which is your “ticket to learn,” but in order to get your Private Pilot license you must be at least 17 years old. With that simple requirement out of the way, the step-by-step process toward finally realizing your dream of having a private pilot’s license is...

1 Flying

Research the flight schools in your area and make sure that the one you use has a good reputation, a well-developed training program and the airplanes to support it. A teaching staff that both knows how to fly and knows how to teach is important. Make sure the flight schools that make your cut are certified to offer pilot training that will result in an FAA recognized pilot’s license.

10 Steps to Becoming a Pilot By Jeffrey Synk

T

he hardest part about getting started in a career in flying is taking the first step. What are the rules? Who do I talk to? What’s is it going to cost? I think you will be surprised at how easy it really is to change your life and career and move towards a career that is challenging, rewarding, and filled with adventure. Let me share a bit about myself first, just so that you know it is possible to become a pilot at any point in your life. When I was 35 years old, I quit a well paying job as a computer programmer. I had always been drawn to flying airplanes and at some point something clicked and I realized that if I was going to make a change and live my dream. I picked up AOPA’s Flight Training Magazine and learned that it was now easier than ever to become a pilot. Continue reading and you will learn the 10 steps that I took, and you can to, on your way to becoming a pilot. The Big First Step Probably the biggest first step you must take if you want to get moving on a career that involves flying an aircraft is to get a pilot’s license that enables you to serve as a Private Pilot. A Private Pilot license (certificate) allows you to carry friends and family and create new adventures. It is also the time to start building hours and is a stepping stone to higher ratings such as an Instrument Rating (fly in clouds), Multi-Engine Rating (an airplane with more than one engine), and Commercial Rating (fly and get paid). To put that in context, there are lesser pilot’s licenses such as the Student Pilot license or the Sports or Recreational Pilot licenses but there are a lot of limitations on those licenses, which will limit your chances of become a full-fledged career pilot. Quick Note: If all you want is to be able to fly in support of your business (but not AS your business) or to be able to fly with some freedom as part of your private life, a private pilot’s license is a good step and a natural first step even if you plan to go on to train to become a commercial pilot down the road. So How Do YOU Do It? Getting your Private Pilot certificate, like any certification, is mostly set in stone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set out very specific steps and milestones that you have to reach before you can get your rating. Visit the FAA website and look under Licenses and Certifications for more information!

Make sure your finances are in order because flight school will run between $3000 and $5000. There are scholarships available and you might be able to use federal student loans through FAFSA if the school qualifies. If you are a veteran and signed-up for the GI Bill, this will pay for some of your training. Enroll in the flight school and clear your schedule. Getting your pilot’s license should be your life’s passion for the next few months. If you stop and start and stop and start you will be wasting your time and money. Flying is a skill and the more you fly the better you will be. Get a medical certificate that is specific to aviation. A general check up is not enough so work with the school to find a doctor who can help you pass the medical requirements to be able to fly. You can find this information again at the FAA website. Take a ground school class either at your flight school, a local community college, or on your computer. At some point you will need to take a written exam for your Private Pilot license. If you attend the classes, they will take about four to five weeks to complete. Take AND PASS the written exam required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at any FAA testing center.

Work with the school to complete 30-40 hours of required flight time with a certificated flight instructor (CFI). You can move through the requirements at your own pace, which means as fast as you can afford to get through it and scheduling the time it takes with the school and the instructor. The school will provide the airplane, as that is part of the fees.

8 9

Keep flying. Fly solo. Fly cross-country. Fly at night. Before you know it, you will be ready for your check ride!

For the final “big” exam, you will go on a flight with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner who will ask you questions and watch your flying skills to determine if you a pilot worthy of a Private Pilot license.

Pot and Cancer:

By Dr. Donna, Editor

What the Research Says Editor’s comments: Smoke of any type or breathing in dust particles of any substance is always a health hazard. It’s possible that other forms of cannabis – lozenges, brownies, lollipops, ice cream, pudding, etc. would not be correlated to the cancer increase.

HEALTH

News for women with breast cancer Cancer Letters, Nov. 18, 2009, Vol. 285, No. 1, pg. 6-12. Cannabinoids in the treatment of cancer. The marijuana plant’s official name is Cannabis sativa. Its common name is called hemp. The active ingredients of the hemp plant are cannabinoids. Many studies – both test tube and biological in vivo studies – have uncovered anticancer effects on different forms of cancer. Recent studies show promise with using hemp cannbinoids in the treatment of estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer and have focused on the role of cannabinoid receptor agonists. Editor’s comments: This new data is interesting. Those with breast cancer that is estrogen receptor positive are always sent home with instructions about staying away from any types of hormones and soy products. Not those with the other type of breast cancer will possibly be sent home with instructions of using marijuana.

W

ith the upcoming election, it’s important to have time to think about the issues. One of the current issues is the legalization of marijuana. The best way to analyze the facts is to spend hours evaluating the research studies. However, not very many people have the time nor the educational background to do so.

Here’s a list of some recent research studies and their findings: What effect does cannabis use have on survival rates of those with chronic myelogenous leukemia? Am J Drug Alcohol Abuse, Jan 2010, Vol. 36, No. 1, 1-6. Substance use and survival after treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). This prospective cohort study of 106 adults with CML followed patients until death or the end of the study about 1-1/2 years. None of the patients were considered to have dependency or substance abuse issues at the time of the study. Twenty-eight patients died. Neither lifetime alcohol use nor cannabis use were associated with survival rates; however, cocaine use increased risk of death by six times. Editor’s comments: Cocaine is a killer no matter which way you look at it… what were cancer patients thinking when they were using cocaine? North Africans find connection of cannabis use to cancer of the nose and throat Br J Cancer Oct 6, 2009, Vol. 101, No. 7, pg 1207-12. Cannabis, tobacco and domestic fumes intake are associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in North Africa Researchers tracked 636 patients with cancer and 615 controls from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and found that cigarette smoking and snuff (tobacco powder with additives) were significantly associated with cancer. Marijuana smoking significantly elevated the risk independent of cigarette smoking. Cooking fumes from compact charcoal ovens during childhood also increased the risk, but alcohol use did not.

Cannabinoids called anti-tumor drugs by scientists Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab, Feb. 2009, Vol. 23, No. 1, 117-31. Use of cannabinoid receptor agonists in cancer therapy as palliative and curative agents In this study performed at the University of Salerno in Italy, scientists reported that some cannabinoids offer potential actions as anti-tumor drugs because they limit cancer cell growth and induce death of tumor cells. However, synthetic cannnabinoids have tumor promoting effects and cause immunosuppression. Editor’s comments: The key terms are the difference between the types of cannabinoids used. Here we discover that scientists have a choice of which ones they can use in their study – synthetic ones or natural ones. Any time we see a study with negative results on tumors, we can look for the answer to the question – were the cannabinoids of the synthetic variety? If so, the study was flawed from the start. What about cancer patients with intractable pain(pain that won’t go away)? Curr Opin Supplort Palliat Care, Mar. 2009, Vol. 3, No. 1, pg 7-13. Do cannabinoids have a role in cancer pain management? Yes, say researchers at the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London. Cannabinoids have modest analgesia effects, scientists say, but the problem is potential central nervous system side effects. Despite this, recent clinical trials have demonstrated the current role of cannabinoids may be to attain small but significant benefit in refractory chronic pain and cancer pain. The scientists concluded that certain cannabis receptors will have to be targeted (via drugs) to achieve analgesia without dose limiting side effects. Editor’s comments: There’s always a pharmacological reason to synthesize a new drug from something natural, isn’t there? SEPTEMBER EDITION 2010

Viewpoint Inspired Dear Mitch, Have you ever been in such a confusing relationship situation that you couldn’t even figure out which way was up and which was down? What the right choice is and if the wrong one would affect you deeply? Well that would be me, confused. As for a little background, my boyfriend and I have been together for three years and it has never been better. Recently though, my ex boyfriend has stepped into the picture. My ex and I talk every day, all the time, about EVERYTHING. Knowing this is wrong and would hurt my boyfriend I continue to do it anyways, keeping it a secret. I try to stop but something inside me is holding me back. I love my boyfriend and can see myself being with him forever and I want that more than anything, but I can’t let go of the infatuation with my ex. What am I to do?

Signed, Confused Santa Barbara, CA

Harry S. Truman once said, “If you can’t convince them, confuse them.” So, WHO are YOU trying to convince… And of WHAT?!! It’s funny... our current hypermedia-attention culture here in the U.S. teaches so many shoulds like: “You should never talk with your ex if you’re in a committed relationship!” Meanwhile, being a human still hasn’t gotten easy, has it?! It HAS become a lot more “should” aware, commanding an unprecedented level of self-evaluation. Our current culture calls us to respond to our meta-cognitions – to pay attention to our thoughts about our thoughts and to become SuperAware & SuperCool, regardless of our disconnection from our “selves”! My friend, you are caught up in a classic relationship dilemma which we’ve all read about, seen, watched, evaluated, judged, gossiped about, and counseled others on… forever! You’ve certainly seen plenty of the “Stop ALL communication with the ex if you’re seriously committed to your relationship”-type advice. Some family members are big on offering the, “Well, maybe you’re just not ready to settle down quite yet”-type counsel. I DON’T believe you’re actually seeking a “What should I DO?” answer! I think you’re seeking some sort of true understanding – the type you DON’T obtain should you simply make a move or change! º Did you know: SOME married couples support their marriages by

having “emotional affairs” while for others that action is disasterous?! What SHOULD YOU DO? • FIRST: Humans aren’t perfect so you shan’t ever “have it all figured out.” When you stop learning, you’ve stopped living!! º You will never get ANYWHERE with this unless you choose to see this as A Learning Opportunity – Step far away from judgment, self-flagellation and expectations. Breathe… and learn…. NEXT: WHAT is a “Long-Term Romantic Relationship”… FOR YOU?! • Where does “emotional intimacy” REALLY stand in that definition?! I know you’ll say, “That’s VERY important!” STOP! Think about what deep emotional intimacy REALLY means! For one thing, because vulnerability generally increases emotional intimacy, eroticism often decreases in direct proportion! THIS is why SOME relationships are more solid with the deeper elements of emotional intimacy kept OUT of the relationship!

other as our closest confidantes” pact? Or are you finding that you love your partner but the emotional intimacy is not that strong? That MAY or MAY NOT be OK! Ignore those cultural messages that say, “Oh, to be in a committed relationship, you and your partner MUST make each other the ONLY ones for deep emotional intimacy.” B.S.!

RELATIONSHIPS

Hey Confused,

• Talk with yourself, then with your partner. A foundation for your living is your primary relationship. It must be protected. However, “protecting” it MAY require thinking out of the box, accepting what IS and ISN’T important to make the relationship work! If you deem that the kind of emotional intimacy you have with your ex is what you must have in your committed relationship, it’s time to look at making that happen (and bid your ex adieu). So, that’s what you should “do” – Ya didn’t want an easy answer… did you?! LOL Namaste, Mitch

• I’m asking: I. Are you REALLY wanting your committed long-term romantic relationship to carry the gifts and burdens of deep emotional intimacy? II. And, how does that stand with your current committed relationship?! • NOW, it gets more complex. What have you and your partner communicated about this issue?! Is there a “We will always keep each

outhwest Airlines announced today plans to increase the number of hospitals and medical transportation organizations that will receive grants in the airline’s 2011 Medical Transportation Grant Program. Southwest has nearly doubled the grant program’s 2011 budget with hopes of assisting more than 5,500 patients and family members with their medical related travel needs. Southwest Airlines understands that many patients with chronic or terminal illnesses have to travel for their appointments or treatments. In hope of easing some of this burden, Southwest Airlines created a formal program to assist patients during this difficult time. Through the Southwest Airlines Medical Transportation Grant Program (MTGP), the airline provides complimentary, roundtrip tickets to hospitals and medical transportation nonprofit organizations. The tickets are distributed by the organizations to deserving patients and their caregivers who must travel for medical care. Only 501(c)3 qualified hospitals and organizations are eligible to apply for the program. The 2011 application is now available online and is due by Oct. 25, 2010. Apply today by visiting: HYPERLINK “http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/share_the_spirit/medical_ transportation.html”www.southwest.com/cares “The number of applicants to the program has grown exponentially since its inception three years ago,” said Linda Rutherford, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Communication and Strategic Outreach. “Southwest’s program is unique, and we want to provide help to more families in need through our 2011 grant program.” In 2010, Southwest increased its ticket allocation to medical organizations by 23 percent to donate $1.2 million in transportation to 29 institutions that then provided tickets to patients and family members in need. 3. Don’t purchase cheap

hearing amplifiers. You often see these dangerous devices for “only $14.95 plus shipping and handling.” The danger of using these devices is that the listeners increase volume levels high enough to hear, but also high enough to do additional damage to the already-damaged hearing mechanism.

M

ost of us take hearing for granted. It’s just there. What we don’t consider is the delicate nature and intricate structure of the ear that enables us to not only hear but interpret what we hear. Hearing is one of the five senses we use to learn while in our environment and important to those who share life with us. And hearing loss is rarely “curable.” In fact, the best hearing care is preventative care - things you can do yourself so you hear better longer. These are simple steps and precautions that will equip you to hear well all life long.

1. Avoid loud noises even for a

short time. Hearing loss, called traumatic hearing loss, can occur with one firecracker or shotgun round under certain conditions. Many returning veterans experience traumatic hearing loss caused by nearby explosions. Always cover your ears to protect your hearing.

2. Avoid long-term exposure to

loud noise. It doesn’t have to be a bang or pop that damages your hearing. The loud background noise in a factory, over time, will cause noise induced hearing loss or NIHL. Wear ear protection.

no-brainer. Even infants can and should be tested and if hearing loss is detected, these babies can be fitted with hearing aids at two months. If you experience a change in your hearing or if you’re over 50, get some baseline readings and some help from a hearing health specialist.

5. Go unplugged. If you listen to

your MP3 player for more than 90 minutes at one time you start to damage the ear mechanics. Give your ears time to recover every 90 minutes and, for goodness sake, turn it down, will ya?

6. Wear protective gear at work.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide adequate hearing protection but the regs are rarely enforced. That means if your workplace is noisy and you don’t wear ear plugs or cups, you’re only hurting yourself. Wear protective gear even if you have to buy it yourself !

7. Wear protective gear at home.

Noise canceling headphones block out ambient noise and protect the delicate hearing parts when mowing the lawn, vacuuming the rug or engaged in other loud activities.

8. Hearing loss can occur at any

age. Most of us think of hearing loss as something only old folks face. Wrong. Hearing loss can be caused or worsened with age, sure, but it can also be caused by trauma or disease or even common medications.

9. Cut down on the aspirin.

10. Don’t clean your ears! That’s

right. Most of us have been taught to remove excess earwax and other debris from the ear canal with a cotton swab. This is dangerous. It’s very easy to damage the eardrum for one thing.

4. Get your hearing tested. A

connection between prolonged, heavy use of aspirin and aspirin substitutes and hearing loss. In fact, there are many ototoxic drugs - drugs that damage hearing as a side effect. Talk to your physician about your aspirin intake and hearing loss.

For another, earwax is actually normal and beneficial. It traps dust and other particles before they can reach the sensitive eardrum. Using a cotton swab to ream out your ears removes beneficial oils and actually pushes the debris further into the ear canal, in some cases impacting earwax to the point of hearing loss. If you produce an excess amount of earwax, purchase an OTC ear wax softener and gently rinse your ears with warm water to remove excess ear wax. No bobby pins, toothpicks or fingers. Clean the outer ear gently and dry with a towel. Done. Look, hearing is something that disappears gradually. There’s a cumulative effect on the hearing mechanism - the longer, the louder, the worse the damage done. Take steps today to protect your hearing health for all of those tomorrows. Hearing Loss - Can it Be Treated Naturally? Hearing Protection/Health

By Michael Shearer

Some Help for this Frustration Condition! In this article, I’ll talk about the two supplements: an herb and a mineral that could help both treat and prevent hearing loss. We’re not talking about “tinnitus,” which is the condition that causes ringing in the ears. Instead, this is about losing hearing itself.

multiple sclerosis, brain tumors and stroke. For this article, let’s focus on two hearing conditions exclusively. Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss The natural cure for stopping hearing loss before it happens is the mineral that seems to do so much for us: magnesium. People who should seriously consider taking magnesium supplements are those who are often exposed to piercing sounds. This could mean gunfire, live music or tools that are used in construction. Over the long term, loud noise can cause permanent hearing loss. This is the reason that prevention is so critical. Nobody knows exactly how the mineral works to protect the ear, but research has proved it.

The ears are amazing receptacles of sound. “Waves” of sound travel through the air and vibrate in your eardrums. The vibrations are sent to the inner ear, where there are tiny cells that actually move in response to the vibrations. It is this movement that generates an electrical signal that is sent down a nerve pathway to the brain. All of this, of course, happens instantly.

Nothing is as effective as wearing devices such as headphones, but magnesium will provide an extra layer of protection. In the mid1990s, researchers performed a two-month study on 300 military recruits who were exposed daily to loud noises. They used a small dose 167 milligrams (mg) of magnesium but even this was enough to raise the level of magnesium inside cells and protect the ears from damage. Soldiers taking magnesium were less likely to get permanent hearing damage, and if damage did set in, it was less severe.

Your brain translates these signals into something meaningful-music or words, for example, that have a certain volume or pitch to them. Now, there are many things that can disrupt this process and cause loss of hearing. Infections could strike the inner ear, the eardrum, the auditory nerve or even the brain, disrupting your ears’ ability to channel sound. Fluid can collect in the middle ear, or too much wax can block the outer ear. Your eardrum and hair cells can be damaged, the latter by loud noise. Some drugs, such as “quinine,” antibiotics and aspirin, may affect those hair cells. Many people experience simple age-related hearing loss. Three more causes are far more severe than the hearing loss that they might trigger:

without any side effects. Researchers here called magnesium a “novel, biological, natural agent” for noise-induced hearing damage. They also included one note: it may help treat hearing loss, as well. Now, on that note, I have a third study to report. In this one, 28 patients who had sudden, noiseinduced hearing loss were given steroids, placebo or magnesium supplements. Sure enough, far more people taking the mineral had improved hearing. This study confirms that magnesium may not just prevent noise-induced hearing loss, but help treat it, too. Treating Sudden Hearing Loss The cause of sudden hearing loss is unknown, but circulation is believed to be part of the problem. That theory is the reason that ginkgo biloba is considered to be an herbal treatment for hearing loss, as it increases the body’s circulation.

However, a second study that year compared ginkgo to the drug Pentoxifylline for treating sudden deafness in 72 patients. Both treatments proved to work equally effectively, although patients on ginkgo reported better improvement overall. In any event, the herb worked as well as the drug In 2001, researchers gave 106 did. Speak to your doctor about patients ginkgo at either 120 mg magnesium and ginkgo if you have two times a day or 12 mg two times damaged hearing or believe that a day. All patients had a specific you are at risk. form of sudden hearing loss. The low dose of ginkgo was chosen Michael Shearer is an expert because they thought that it would Health author and blogger about serve as placebo and have no effect Health Advice at at all. Amazingly, though, they www.doctorshealthexpress.com were wrong! It didn’t matter which dose the patients took, most of them recovered from the sudden hearing loss two months later. It is very interesting, but it doesn’t totally prove that ginkgo is effective, because it’s possible that many people with sudden hearing loss simply recover on their own anyway.

A MEDICAL CASE FOR CANNABIS LEGALIZATION

C

Cannabis was also widely cultivated and used extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe in modern times for non-medicinal uses. Its fibers were woven together to fashion the sails for the Mayflower; both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew cannabis and the paper on which the Declaration of Independence was written was made of hemp; during World War II the U.S. Government subsidized Midwest farmers to grow hemp to make rope; and Henry Ford once fashioned an entire car from the hemp plant that ran on hemp fuel. Cannabis is truly an amazing and versatile plant. Unfortunately, in the 1930’s and 40’s, a deceitful but highly successful multimedia marketing campaign to discredit the usefulness of cannabis (and thus eliminate business competition) was foisted upon the American public and our government by a few wealthy and influential men. This “Reefer Madness” campaign, a disgrace to America’s past, fueled by racism and supported by baseless “facts”, eventually led to cannabis being outlawed in the U.S.. Even today, most arguments for the continued prohibition against cannabis are based on the fallacious statements conceived during this campaign. But instead of reiterating these myths, today I would like to share with you the great potential that cannabis has as a medicine and a health supplement.

CANNABIS IS SAFE. Cannabis is safer than aspirin. Cannabis is safer than any other drug on the market. There has never been a documented fatality from “overdosing” on cannabis or THC (one of the principle chemicals in cannabis). In fact, one estimate from toxicity studies infers that a human would have to smoke more than 1500 pounds of cannabis within 14 minutes to have a 50% chance of dying. Researchers have also found that while smoking tobacco and cannabis together triples the risk of getting COPD, there is no increase risk from smoking cannabis alone on COPD or lung cancer.

Health

annabis, better known today as hemp or marijuana, is not a drug but a herb that has been cultivated by man for more than ten thousand years and is one of man’s oldest cultivated crops. Cannabis has been grown throughout the world as a source of food, fiber, fuel, medicine, and for spiritual purposes. Most ancient civilizations are known to have used cannabis for medicinal purposes including Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, India, Islamic nations, Taiwan and China.

By R.D. Chapman, M.D., ABIHMBy Louise Michaels

CANNABIS MAY STOP CANCER FROM SPREADING. A study by California Pacific Medical Center found that a component of cannabis called cannabidiol can block a gene responsible for metastatic spread of breast cancer. A study by Harvard University found THC reduced tumor growth in lung cancer by 50% and was able to slow metastatic spread as well. Researchers believe that cannabis is especially effective on hormone- related tumors. CANNABIS CAN HELP PREVENT ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE. New evidence from the Scripps Research Institute is showing that THC prevents the inflammation in the brain that leads to Alzheimer’s Disease. We have the historic opportunity in November to legalize cannabis and, in so doing, right a wrong that has been perpetrated on our citizens for more than 70 years. Here’s to a healthier and more honest America. One World, One People, One Love. R.D. Chapman, M.D., ABIHM (The author can be reached by email at new.revolution@live.com).

Recent medical research on cannabis has shown cannabis to be far from a dangerous drug. In fact, studies have found: WE HAVE RECEPTORS IN OUR BRAINS AND IMMUNE SYSTEMS THAT ARE SPECIFIC FOR CANNABINOIDS (the active chemicals in cannabis) and which are responsible for the actions of cannabis when consumed by humans. This means that cannabis and humans have developed a symbiotic evolutionary relationship where the survival of one species helps to ensure the survival of the other. Additionally, cannabinoids bind to the same receptors that release endorphins. These receptors provide pain relief.

THE ULTIMATE FORM OF PAIN RELIEF Honoring Your Body’s Wisdom

Lou introduced Topricin to the market in 1994. He is very humbled by the fact that his biomedical discovery has brought relief to fellow veterans at hospitals such as the Walter Reed VA Medical Center. Orthopedic, rheumatology, osteopathic, family doctors, and other integrative medical doctors at the Continuum Center for Health & Healing (CCHH) Beth Israel Hospital in NYC consider Topricin the Lou Paradise, CEO, best treatment protocol for Topical BioMedics, Inc resolving their patients’ pain issues. “The ultimate form of pain relief is healing. important job: eliminating toxins through its pores. Lou says, “We don’t want to suffer and be a victim of what we don’t know! When people who are suffering experience how a natural product like Topricin works--and so quickly--they are not only delighted to finally get well, but are also happy that the use of oral pain medications can become a thing of the past”.

Pain Killers Kill More Than Just Pain

Homeopathic preparations are regulated by the FDA as over-thecounter (OTC) medicines. This is a very important distinction between Topricin and the vast majority of other natural products. It assures you will be getting a safe product manufactured to the highest quality. Most importantly, homeopathic medicines have a 200-year history of being safe for the entire family—a fact that gives people peace of mind. Consumers should consider if the chemical(s) used by drug manufacturers to produce namebrand OTC pain relievers are safe. Even when a pharmaceutical drug manufacturer has the most impeccable manufacturing plant for products containing such ingredients as the chemical acetaminophen (known to be the leading cause of liver failure in the US) or Ibuprofen (know to cause kidney failure and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke) the answer is NO THEY ARE NOT SAFE! This begs the question: Why are we still buying and using these products in the first place? Lou says, “The number of OTC pain relief products pulled from store shelves is massive. Most alarming is the fact that many of these recalls were for Children’s Tylenol and Children’s Motrin. This is alarming, and everyone should be made aware of the dangers. OTC pain medications are not the only dangerous drugs on the market. On the prescription side, we must consider the addictive nature of such commonly prescribed drugs as Percocet or Vicoden,. The story of Rush Limbaugh’s drug addiction to the painkiller Oxycontin brought much of this to light several years ago, along with Michael Jackson’s tragic death in 2009. One of the benefits of Topricin is its ability to significantly reduce and even eliminate the need for and dependency on all classes of oral pain medication. “It is our mission at Topical BioMedics to let people know that there is a better way to treat adult and children’s pain issues,” says Lou.

Further Research and Development Leads to New Product Innovations

Lou is in continuous research mode and added some important additions to the company’s product line last year: Topricin® Foot Therapy Cream and Topricin® Junior for kids. The sad truth is that there are few truly safe and effective pain relief products for children. Topricin Junior is formulated to safely address the special needs of children ages two to twelve, with calendula to sooth their sensitive skin. With Topricin Junior, parents can take comfort in knowing

that they are using a natural, safe, effective pain relief treatment on their little ones, with 5% of gross sales donated to pediatric cancer care. Approximately 75% of the population suffers from foot and ankle pain, and so Lou developed Topricin Foot Therapy to address their needs. The innovative new formula is safe for diabetics, and was voted one of the best new products in 2009 by retailers, as reported in Vitamin Retailer magazine. The entire Topricin family features a soothing base made from purified water, coconut oil, and glycerin. Unlike products containing petroleum, Topricin won’t clog pores, which allows the skin to breathe and sweat the toxins out. “My goal in creating Topricin was to develop a formulation that relieved pain by enhancing the healing process—working with our body’s innate wisdom,” says Lou. “I don’t want anyone to have to live with pain—as I once did—thinking that there is nothing that will help them enjoy a vibrant quality of life. And absolutely no one should have to be dependent upon oral pain medications that have hazardous side effects and ultimately destroy the liver and kidneys.”

A Growing Legion of Faithful Users

Who uses Topricin? Practitioners, such as MDs, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Topricin is also used by people who suffer with arthritis, lower back pain, repetitive motion injuries, nerve pain, work/sports related and trauma injuries, and myriad other painful ailments and conditions. Used and recommended by professional sports trainers, Topricin is the treatment of choice for active people—including world-class pro athletes, triathletes, Olympians, and Broadway dancers. Topricin is also used by bull riders and rodeo clowns, talk show hosts and actors, musicians and authors, weekend warriors and senior citizens, members of fitness centers and gyms—and people just like you! Lou says, “Topricin is not the cure—it’s the body that is the true miracle, with its wisdom and ability to cure itself. All we have to do is give it what it needs to get there.” For more information about Topricin, visit our website: www.topricin.com. Feel free to call us at: 800-959- 1007 SEPTEMBER EDITION 2010

How to Choose a Therapist

Melissa M. Avitia, LCSW

What should I look for in a therapist? When I get an initial consultation call from a potential client, I always

card with you. This will allow time to complete intake paperwork, which typically takes 5-10 minutes. Most therapists use the first session to establish rapport with you by asking questions such as “What brings you in for counseling? What symptoms are you experiencing such as difficulty sleeping, poor appetite, feeling worried, anxious or depressed? What would you like to see improved as a result of coming to counseling? Questions pertaining to your general family history will be asked as well. The approach a therapist takes in asking these questions varies according to their professional therapeutic style. Some therapists will dig deeper into your childhood and family upbringing and background. Most therapists will want at least a brief overview of your childhood, martial status, relationship history, career and education background, and spiritual and social support status. Discussion of therapy goals will also be explored. This information provides the therapist with a helpful picture of your life and what resources you have access to in order to work through your mental health stressors. Feel free to ask your therapist questions as well. This interactive process will help you establish a connection and determine if this is a comfortable therapeutic relationship.

ne of the questions I have asked and have been asked is “How can I find a good therapist?” This is a valid question when starting the search for a mental health counselor. Since going to therapy involves putting your most personal and intimate problems in the hands of someone else, you want to find someone who is a compassionate, experienced and professional practitioner.

What to expect at your first therapy session? Try to arrive a few minutes early and take a copy of your insurance

ask at the end of the phone consultation “ Do I sound like someone you feel comfortable to meet with/?” One of the most vital characteristics of successful counseling is finding someone who understands your perspective of the problem, respects your personal belief and opinions and promotes personal growth. Did you feel a connection with the therapist during your initial phone consultation and/or visit?

Remember, the most important thing is to find a therapist you feel comfortable with, one that respects you as an individual, and actively helps you work through your stressors. Feel free to ask for referrals to other therapists if you are unable to establish a positive therapeutic relationship.

What questions should I ask during an initial phone consultation / visit? Because you are seeking help from the therapist, don’t be shy to ask

For more information on about this article, please contact: Melissa M. Avitia, LCSW 916-548-1701/Email: mailto:avitialcsw@yahoo.com www.counseling-sacramento.com

questions pertaining the therapist’s professional experience, therapy style or approach to your particular problem(s). Sample questions to ask… How long have you been providing psychotherapy? What insurance companies do you accept? What are your fees? Do you have a sliding scale? Do you currently have clients with similar problems as mine? Could you describe your therapy style? What is your therapy approach when working with individuals, couples and/or families? What is your flexibility in scheduling appointments? What should I expect to happen at my first appointment? These are all appropriate questions to ask in order to help you determine if this is a good therapy fit for you.

Ok, so how do I find a therapist? Many individuals have insurance plans that include mental health

services such as Employee Assistance Program (EAP) plans or behavioral health coverage. Check with your insurance company to see if they have a list of “mental health or behavioral health providers.” Psychotherapists often times contract with insurance companies. This makes it easier for members to receive mental health services. It is important for you to ask your insurance company what your specific coverage includes. Ask them, “How many sessions are covered? What is my co-payment?” If you do not have insurance coverage, then finding a therapist may be a little more challenging. But don’t worry! Ask your friends, family or church leaders for any referrals, or use the Internet to do your personal search.

Good luck in your journey!

Bicycle Tail Lights Could Mean Life Or Death to Cyclists By Phillip R Davis

B

icycle taillights aren’t, by most, considered to be as important as headlights. Bicycle headlights are required to be seen from 100 feet away while a red reflector in the back is most commonly the minimum legal requirement. Consider that safety, and that the law dictates that we ride in the same direction as traffic; what drivers see when approaching a bicycle from behind can be the difference between life and death. With growing numbers of bicycle safety awareness programs and increased reports of accidents, some fatal, many cyclists have been choosing bright bicycle taillights over reflectors, regardless of what the legal requirements are. Officer Dan McQuillin of Chandler Arizona’s bike unit, speaking to his local newspaper, The Arizona Republic, said “new riders often don’t educate themselves before taking to the road, and that can lead to dangerous results”. Even though state law only requires reflectors, he recommends red taillights. Over the course of one month, in Columbia Missouri, where bicycle tail lights are required, the police department, instead of issuing tickets, gave away about 150 headlight and tail light sets to cyclists who were stopped for riding at night without them. With the help of a local business they were able to show the public just how important an issue bicycle safety is to them. One incident of note was reported by The Amherst Bulletin in Amherst Massachusetts. Kristy King, a 28-year-old woman was struck by a car while riding her bicycle at night. The police found King to be at fault for the accident because she did not have lights on her bike; the driver just could not see her. The police also noted that she was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Rob Kusner, a local bicycle safety advocate said “it’s important for cyclists to both see and be seen”. Bicycle headlights are great for helping you see while riding at night but this statement reinforces the necessity for bicycle taillights over reflectors.

An average of 689 bicyclists were killed each year in collisions with vehicles between 2000 and 2004, down from over 1,000 in 1975, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But now this number is rising again, 716 bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents in 2008. I know that this increase isn’t a direct reflection on a lack of bicycle taillights but it certainly shows that even with all the bicycle safety information available we still need a big improvement in bicycle safety awareness. Learn How to Do the Bicycle Abs

Exercise - The Most Effective Exercise For the Abs By Suzie Parker

Bicycling

W

ant to learn more about the bicycle abs exercise? It’s a clever move. According to one study, the bicycle abs exercise is one of the most effective abs exercises there is. This is because the bicycle abs exercise targets the whole abs group. (The abs is made up of 4 very different muscle groups). By targeting your abs from all different angles, which target the specific muscle groups, it will result in more effective abs training and much better results. The bicycle abs exercise is great for beginners up all the way to advanced. And you can do it in the comfort of your own home. Ready to learn the three variations of the bicycle abs exercise? Here we go... If you are a beginner and your tummy muscles aren’t that strong, you should start with doing the modified bicycle movement first. When you are a bit more advanced you can try the traditional bicycle exercise, it’s more for intermediate fit people. And when you really want to push it and take abs training to the next level, you should try the advanced variation. Let’s have a look at the three different variations:

M The odified B icycle modified bicycle move is great for beginners and all you need to do it is yourself and two paper

plates to act as sliding discs. You do the exercise exactly like the traditional bicycle exercise, but you place your feet on two paper plates and then slide your legs forward and then back (it’s a bit easier that way). When you do the modified version, your obliques (the sides of your abs) are also involved.

T raditional B icycle The traditional bicycle exercise is an intermediate exercise (not for beginners). It targets both the upper

and lower abs. So this is the perfect exercise to do if you want a six-pack. This is how you can do it: Lie on your back, with your knees bent 90 degrees in the air. Pump your legs back and forth (bicycle style) as you rotate your torso from side to side by moving an armpit (not elbow) towards the opposite leg.

Ad vanced Variation The advanced variation is not for the faint of heart, but it delivers the best results if you are fit enough.

It’s called the straight leg cycle crunch. Doing the bicycle with straight legs makes it harder, so don’t try this if you are a beginner. Instructions: Lie on your back, bend your hips and knees 90 degrees so that your feet are in the air. Place your hands behind your ears, and perform an abs crunch by lifting your head and shoulders of the floor. At the same time, lift your leg to your chest. Lower your torso to the floor as you straighten your leg, keeping it a few inches of the floor. Now that you know all the different types of bicycle maneuvers, you can pick one that suits your fitness level and have great fun toning your abs into that flat desired version you’ve always dreamed about. Remember that you are the only one that can make that dream a reality. So eat healthy, drink lots of water, exercise regularly and believe in yourself. Hearing Aids Do Not Restore Or Correct Hearing Loss By Vera Rodgers

Hearing Protection/Health

T

here is an age old adage that says, “Silence is golden,” but 20 million Americans who currently deal with a certain amount of hearing loss don’t want to learn this the hard way. With technological advances in modern hearing amplification devices, many patients are able to improve their hearing enough to enjoy the sounds of life. Due to the credibility a former president of America provided them, it’s more acceptable to wear hearing aids. It started when this former president was seen wearing one of the new “ear canal” hearing aids. He also openly discussed the fact he had hearing difficulties.

There is an estimated 20 million Americans with hearing problems; only around 12% actually use hearing aids. According to a well-known audiologist, the majority of people who realize they have a loss in hearing will usually go five years before they do anything about it. Hearing aids have a stigma attached to them that make them undesirable. A lot of people equate hearing aids as heavy, uncomfortable devices, as well as a sign of getting older. While adults tend to correlate it with aging, this expert deals with a lot of children who are experiencing hearing loss. She reminds people that over the last 50 years hearing aids have come a long way. There is plenty of technology out there that helps make hearing loss more bearable. The newest and most compact of these is the canal aid, nicknamed the “Reagan Aid.”

Created just over a year ago, the canal aid device is built with highly advanced technology. It is custom made to fit directly in the ear canal, is barely visible, weighs just a few grams, and has been designed to emphasize sounds of a higher pitch, but not for any severe hearing loss. Obviously the hearing aid is definitely appealing cosmetically, but the small size does create some problems. Quality control of the canal aid is not up to the level it should be, and the number produced is quite limited. Canal aids are not the most popular, but are in demand. But because of their size, large numbers of them cannot be manufactured at competitive prices. When it comes to popularity, it’s the behind the ear model that’s the current favorite. This kind of aid currently accounts for 52.4 percent of the market based on a recent survey done by the National Hearing Aid Society. Almost 50% of sales can be attributed to in the ear aids; canal aids are in this category. Most men generally choose the canal aid, when given a choice, while women usually prefer the behind-the-ear version because it can be easily covered with their hair. Even with popularity of the behind the ear aids, there are still other devices being manufactured. Whoever wants to buy an aid needs to actually have a physician diagnose them with hearing loss. In order to purchase a hearing aid, you must receive authorization from a designated medical professional. A hearing specialist is the best one to diagnose problems with the ears, but actually any medical doctor is able to grant the permission necessary. Since hearing loss may be due to other problems such as infection, and may be corrected surgically or medically. If you want to buy a hearing aid, you have to get a medical permission slip, but there are waivers that can help you circumvent getting the exam. Anyone purchasing an aid in the absence of a doctor’s authorization will have the waiver read out loud to him or her by the hearing vendor, who will also tell the customer that he or she is proceeding against his own best interest. However, you can still sign the waiver if you really want to and the dealer will test your hearing loss for you if you desire. It is advised that you seek the advice of a qualified audiologist for the correct testing before you buy a hearing aid. Testing can also be done at hearing aid dispensaries. A consumer might also want to ask a seller if they provide this trials before they actually make the final purchase from them. If so, you might be able to try out the hearing device for free. Hearing aids continue to improve as time goes on, they are getting smaller and more high tech, however it is important to remember they are simply aids. Unfortunately, many customers hope that hearing aids are like glasses, which with regular use, can restore vision; however, hearing aids cannot replace or repair hearing loss, they only amplify the sounds. For hearing aids, more info can be found at www.nhc.com. au/hearing-aids.aspx

Worried About Hearing Damage? By Vera Rodgers

S

! l l i P a e k a T t s Ju Hearing Protection/Health

cientists have managed to gather evidence over a few years from lab animals to suggest that by taking a pill we can limit the damage to our hearing from loud noise. The scientists are now starting trials with humans. If all goes well, evidence will show that the new substance when dissolved in a drink can make a difference to the results of a hearing test.

This is just a small part of many ongoing research studies hoping to finally be able to provide a cure for sufferers of hearing loss due to the damage caused by loud noise. This research has been going on for many years but because of more progress recently, efforts have increased significantly. This research is not intended to provide a replacement for ear protection and ear plugs. The pill will act as additional protection alongside the existing methods because the problem hearing loss is still widespread with the current level or protection available. Federal government reports show that hearing loss has the second highest number of incidents reported for any occupational illness or injury. It is estimated that 10 million Americans have permanent hearing loss from loud noise caused by a sudden burst or a log-term exposure. The dangerous levels of noise in some industries, especially manufacturing, mining, construction and agriculture means that around 30 million Americans are at risk from hearing damage due to their occupation. Being a musician also means that you are at higher risk. Hearing damage is not only caused by what happens at work. Going to a shooting range or watching a car or motorcycle race can also cause irreparable damage to your hearing. Specialized noise canceling headphones and earplugs do help but do not prevent all hearing damage. Some sounds can overwhelm the protection that is currently available. People tend to wear it less than they need to and hearing loss can also be more likely in some people than others. Some noise can actually damage the ears by penetrating the skull even if the ears are being protected. In the past, scientists have approached the creation of a hearing protecting pill in a few different ways. Thanks to magnesium supplements in their diet it was reported that in 1994 Israeli military recruits were able to avoid any hearing loss during their noisy basic training. The main focus in today’s research is the use of antioxidants.

A lot of the damage that causes hearing loss is not actually caused by the sound directly. A lot of the damage to a person’s ears is actually due to the ear producing chemicals known as free radicals that the inner ear produces after being exposed to loud noise. The free radicals can be neutralized by antioxidants present in the ear. If too many free radicals are produced due to excessive noise then the antioxidants cannot neutralize them. Free radicals eventually kill off the hair shaped receptor cells in the ear that convert sound waves to nerve signals that should be sent to the brain. Once these receptor cells are dead, the hearing is damaged permanently. Increasing the ear’s natural antioxidant defenses may prevent unnecessary damage and also treat damage that has just occurred. So far, the experiments with lab animals have yielded promising results in preventing permanent hearing loss. Experts are still cautious about the effectiveness of the antioxidant method on humans. Future trials on lab animals will vary the level of the noise and the doses to see whether the antioxidant is likely to benefit people. Marijuana, the Myths and Facts

A

Medical Cannabis

drug, Marijuana, prepared for human consumption in an herbal form is also called by the name of Cannabis. Everyone should be apprised of the fact that using Marijuana is in fact Drug abuse. People have termed Marijuana safer to use than other drugs and tried to whitewash it; however, real psychological harm and physical harm are caused. The fact is that Marijuana is a hallucinogenic drug, that can lead to addiction and abuse. Symptoms Of Marijuana’s Addiction

Both emotional and mental addictions are caused by Marijuana. The mind becomes Marijuana obsessed and you start gravitating towards friends and people who are like minded. Once the addiction is full blown the person is only able to function under the Marijuana high. Their misconception that marijuana is what they need to solve their problems causes constant abuse. Being without their stash and are constantly concerned with the next hit are hated by addicts. In a nutshell, you live, breathe and dream Marijuana. Some classic symptoms are: - Marijuana tolerance: the need for markedly in increased amounts of marijuana to achieve intoxication or markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of Marijuana. - Greater use of marijuana than intended: Marijuana taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended. - To cut down or control marijuana use there are unsuccessful efforts. - For using marijuana a great deal of time is spent. - Marijuana use causing a reduction in social, occupational or recreational activities. - significant problems will be caused due to continued use of marijuana despite knowing about it.

Marijuana and Addiction-Myths and Facts

There are several myths surrounding the use of Marijuana; however you should remember that interpretations vary - so the reader is urged to keep an open mind. Cause for Permanent Mental Illness During intoxication, marijuana users become irrational and often behave erratically. Even though there are not any scientific evidence showing that marijuana causes psychological damage or mental illness, psychological distress like feelings of panic, anxiety, and paranoia are caused following marijuana ingestion. Marijuana is Highly Addictive. To break the addiction long term users experiencing physical dependence and withdrawal often need professional drug treatment. It is not for those who smoke Marijuana occasionally and in very small quantities but for those who are long term users. Being more potent than in the past. The youth of today are using a much more dangerous drug than their counterparts from the past ever did. This is a highly debatable point as common sense tells us it must be true considering that man has always tried to improve everything so why not Marijuana. Marijuana offences are not severely punished. Few marijuana addicts are arrested or sent to prison - this encourages the continued use of the drug. Statistics show this is far from the truth - arrests have more than doubled and keep increasing. They do get arrested, tried and jailed and make no mistake about that. The Law in every country in the world wishes to see the end of the drug rule - be it Marijuana or any other drug. Causes more damage to lungs than tobacco. There is elevated risk of developing lung cancer and related diseases to marijuana smokers. The belief that moderate marijuana smoking poses minimal danger to the lungs has been under dispute. No obstruction of the lung’s small airway is exhibited by heavy marijuana smokers, unlike heavy tobacco smokers. No matter what it is you are smoking it has some effects so get wise. Kids’ Green Lunch Boxes – What They Are & Where to Find Them

By Dr. Donna, Editor

Below are TWO choices; the Editor’s Picks.

Laptop Lunches

Designed by two on-the-go moms committed to healthful eating and sustainable style, Laptop Lunches’ Bento System contains a Bento Box 2.0, stainless steel utensils, drink bottle, insulated bento carrier (looks like a briefcase), and also a book of lunch ideas. Each BPA, lead and phthalate-free plastic container holds the exact amount of food your child needs to meet his or her daily requirements. For example, one container perfectly fits in a sandwich. Vegetable sticks fit nicely in another container and there’s a smaller container for dips to go with the veggies. Two additional containers will fit a serving of fruit and vegetable salad such as potato salad. Here’s what one parent said: “We love our Laptop Lunches and have put them to daily use. The lunches are so good, my kids are the envy of their peers! Today they are eating smoked salmon, whole grain crackers, avocado, artichoke with may in the dipping container) and strawberries! Yum, yum…” You can find them at www.laptoplunches.com

FEATURED STROY

I

f you are a parent, surely you have heard about the reports about ingredients found in plastics called BPA, which is correlated with thyroid damage, reproductive problems, cancer and a whole host of other health problems. This information was released a few years ago and several countries in Europe lined up quickly to ban the chemical. The U.S. still hasn’t banned BPA so parents must take their children’s health into their own hands. Looking for suitable replacements for BPA-containing products such as water bottles and lunch kits is essential.

LunchBots

LunchBots are 100% stainless steel lunch containers sized 7” x 5.5” x 2”, 6.25” x 4.5” x 1.75”, or 5.5” x 4” x 1.5”. It’s easy to fit leftovers from the restaurant in these Lunchbots, and you can buy them with a handy divider for crackers and cheese, fruit and nuts and other foods. These containers are dishwasher safe but like ones from other companies, they can’t be heated and are not water-tight so don’t put soup in them. As with plastic and plastic alternatives, you still shouldn’t microwave them. When full, LunchBots should not sit out at room temperature and should be refrigerated. They’re a good way to eliminate using plastic wrap and sandwich bags. For more info, see www.lunchbots.com

Federal Government

Compelled to Support Medical Marijuana

T

Health

he American Medical Association, which is the largest doctors’ organization in the USA, has reconsidered its position towards marijuana and currently supports exploration and medical research on marijuana for medicinal use. Recently, the group has persuaded the federal government to re-evaluate its controlled substance categorization of marijuana in Schedule I, which unfairly maligns the plant alongside with some of the most hazardous narcotic substances, such as LSD and heroin.

By Amelia Simpson

AMA officer of board, Dr. Edward Langston specifies that just a least number of controlled, casual tests have ever been maintained on ingested marijuana in spite of medical research in by marijuana doctors and other experts, which encompasses more than 30 years. As for now, the group encourages new researches on marijuana’s effectiveness in spite of its support for the classification of marijuana in Schedule I, since 1997, because more and more marijuana doctors appear over time. This year, Obama’s administration has also ordered federal narcotics agents to stop prosecuting people who use and distribute marijuana (including medical marijuana doctors) in the states that have legalized it, which indicated an alteration of the course from past administrations’ stringent opposition to the use of medical marijuana, even for people that have marijuana cards in the states that have

legalized the plant for medical use. At the moment, fourteen states lawfully permit the use of medical marijuana and around twelve other states have started to think about doing so. The American Medical Association is interested in study, which takes into account alternative methods of using marijuana, apart from therapeutically smoking it. Lawyers for medical marijuana speak about other helpful modes of medical marijuana use, involving the THC-rich cannabis oil extraction, which is claimed to be able to heal cancer patients. Today, no one is persecuted for the use of cannabis if a legal medical marijuana card is present. The reaction of the federal government to the AMA’s stance has been pretty silent in spite of loosened federal prosecution of medical marijuana use and medical marijuana clinic workers. DEA - the Drug Enforcement Administration - repeated the status of marijuana as a Schedule I substance and the FDA - Food and Drug Administration - refused to give any commentaries on the situation. The American Medical Association was one of the sole groups to object the first federal limitation on cannabis, which were established back in 1937. It still persists to decline casual idea that marijuana is a myth, in spite of its past support of Schedule I narcotic classification. The organization even objected an offered amendment, which would have settled its managerial policies in resistance to ingested marijuana as a safe way of use for marijuana treatment. In fact almost any marijuana clinic provides edible products of medical marijuana for

patients with marijuana cards. Marijuana support groups are joyous about the new stance of the AMA and the extending change of attitude towards marijuana and everything related to it - marijuana doctors, marijuana clinics, etc. While federal administration still resists against the marijuana legalization, referring to the FDA consideration in objection to its secure use as medicine, popular belief persists to change in favor of further study and medical use of marijuana. Last year, the second largest doctor group, the American College of Physicians has uttered similar support for improved research and reassessment of marijuana. Also, the California Medical Association passed its own opinions that referred to marijuana criminalization as a “failed public health policy.” The moods are changing towards frank research of the marijuana benefits. The attraction for further proof-based study by acknowledged medicinal organizations is a step in the proper direction on the way to legalizing medical marijuana for legal and safe medicinal purposes Amelia Simpson is from USA. he Egyptians loved their pets. Did you know they had a lot of them: dogs, cats, monkeys, gazelles, birds and mongooses. Ancient Egyptians trained mongooses, dogs, and even hawks to hunt with them.

They drew pictures of their pets on hieroglyphic texts. Tomb walls had paintings of the pets and their masters. Egyptians believed that the pets would join them in eternity and often provided bowls and even food for them. But here’s the part that may be hard to stomach: They also mummified their pets. In 1888, an Egyptian farmer uncovered a mass grave near the village of Istabl Antar with mummified remains of cats. The cats were 10 to 20 cats deep, wrapped in linen, some with gilded faces. The best specimens were kept but all the rest were sold as fertilizer eventually totaling 18,000 pounds that went to England. These mummified animals were like a layer of protection to get to the really valuable remains at sacred sites throughout Egypt. In other cases, the mummified animals were gods that the people worshipped. One example was the Apis bull, mummified in Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. This bull was a symbol of strength and virility and linked to the king. When the bull died, it took the Egyptians 70 days to mummify the body of the bull. Forty days were spent in drying it, and 30 days to wrap it in linen. Back then, natron was the salt used to dry out a body. Natron absorbs moisture and fat. Used as a washing soda still, natron is mined southwest of the Nile Delta. Essential oils kept the muscles flexible and

frankincense clumps sealed bandages as they melted. Alcohol was used to wash out the internal cavities after evisceration. Mummified pets are sometimes kept inside larger statues of the same animal that has been mummified. Animal mummies can be seen in Egyptian museums and are the subject of scientific studies at the American University in Cairo.

Modern Day Mummification Available Now You don’t have to be a king or queen nowadays to get your pet mummified. Check out the website at HYPERLINK “http:// www.summum.org/mummification/pets/” www.summum.org/ mummification/pets/ and you’ll find that the procedure lives on. This facility located in Salt Lake City has thanatogeneticists on staff who have already lovingly mummified their own pets and “will care for your friend with the affection and attention of a mother.” The Summum science of Mummification uses old methods of the art, including wrapping the body and treating it with oil. The animal is finally placed within a bronze Mummiform. The process takes five to ten months to complete.

Bad Dog, O

Bad Dog,

n a recent episode of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” (AFV) one of the top three submissions for the $10,000 prize was a video of the aftermath of destruction a family’s pet dog had done to their home. This dog had destroyed an end table, ripped the frame off a doorway, demolished a patio door screen and frame, shredded carpeting, broken glassware, and had literally “eaten” a three foot by four foot hole in the wall - destroying sheetrock, insulation, and framing in the process. He was a one dog demolition crew! I was horrified and appalled as I watched the video and listened to the mixture of giggles and gasps from the viewing audience. It was as if the poor, unsuspecting family shrugged their shoulders and said “Bad Dog, Bad Dog, Whatcha Gonna Do?” The more appropriate question, however, is “My dog, my dog, WHY do you do what you do?” The answer to that question is not a simple one. Entire books have been written concerning “bad dog behavior.” And the truth is that every dog is different, and therefore, there is no “pat answer” for every situation. However, a basic understanding of “Who dogs are, and How they behave” will lead us to some appropriate suggestions on how to handle difficult and domineering dogs. If you suffer from “Bad Dog Syndrome,” this article will help you understand who your dog is (Alpha Dog Mentality), and teach you how to “reprogram” and your misbehaving dog. Soon you’ll be saying “Good Dog, Good Dog, Oh how I love you!” You can find the follow-up article “Bad Dog, Bad Dog” Part 2, in the Feature Articles section at K-9 Outfitters, A Division of Damascus Road Enterprises. But before we proceed, if you suffer from “bad dog syndrome” with your family pet, make sure there isn’t an underlying medical condition. Take your dog to the vet, explain your problem, and ensure he/she is healthy, and doesn’t suffer from dental, intestinal, digestion, parasitic, or other problems. Once you find that your dog is healthy, the following information should prove helpful. Dogs are, by nature, pack animals. Pack animal behavior is instinctive from before dogs were domesticated and lived in the wild. Every pack has a hierarchy, and every animal in the pack has duties, responsibilities, and expectations. Since your dog doesn’t live in the wild, he/she assumes you, your family, and other household pets make up the “pack.” Many times, “bad dog behavior” is a result of confusion over “Alpha Dog Status” or “Alpha Dog Mentality.” You must establish that you are the “Alpha” dog in the pack. You must also establish that other family members, to include the children, all rank higher in the pack than your dog does. There are many ways to effectively put your dog in his proper pack ranking. Here are a few suggestions, or rules, for handling domineering dogs, and establishing pack rankings: When you enter the house, make sure your dog enters last, even if you must put her on a leash. This shows her where she ranks in the family “pack.” Alpha dogs want the run of the entire house. Make sure certain areas of the home are out of bounds for the dog. That may include certain bedrooms, the laundry room, bathrooms, or the den. This helps the dog know you are master of the house, not him.

dogs occupy high traffic areas, like hallways and entryways. Don’t step over or go around the dog, nudge the dog and tell her to 3moveAlpha out of your way, and make sure she does so. This lets her know who

owns the space and who is in charge. Don’t allow your dog to DEMAND your attention. Dogs usually do this by climbing on your lap, or by nudging your hand or arm. Make the dog sit, lie down, etc., and then give lavish praise and attention. Remember, you control when you give your dog attention, affection, and praise. Exercise control over your dog’s possessions. Take away all her toys, then give her a command, and when she obeys, give her the toy as a treat. After she plays with it for awhile, take it away again. When you come home, make your dog greet you first. Ignore him until he does. He must be submissive to you, not the other way around. Establish dog eating times. In the pack, the Alpha dog always eats first, and then the other dogs eat. Make sure the family eats first, followed

Bicycling

Is Bicycling a Good Exercise For Burning Calories? You bet it is!

Bicycling is one of the best possible exercises for burning calories. Whether it is on a stationary bike in a gym, at home or riding outdoors, riding a bicycle burns more calories than almost any other exercise in a given amount of time. On top of that bicycle riding is a lot more fun than most other exercises. Bicycling is also much more user friendly than most forms of exercise. It is not a high impact sport that that wears on joints like running or many aerobic exercises. It is even an exercise that can be enjoyed after hip or knee replacements. The longer you stay at it the more calories you burn. The amount of calories burned bicycling or any other exercise, depends on the time you spend at the exercise along with your intensity. This is a great plus for bicycling because it is very easy to continue bicycling for an hour or more. The longer you cycle the more calories you burn. Most of the bicyclists I know can easily ride for two hours or more. Some of my wonderful fanatic friends are randonneures. Their rides are anywhere from 60 to 750 miles at a time. These folks ride day and night to reach their goals. Talk about long rides, I recently met a very nice young lady on the University of Texas, Austin, bicycle team and they just completed a ride from Austin, TX to Anchorage Alaska and back in eighty days. They raised over $250,000 for cancer research. Then there is the Ride Across America (RAAM) from Oceanside, CA to Atlantic City, NJ every year. This is a truly amazing race. The 8 person men’s team completed it in 5 days and 16 minutes with an incredible average speed of 22.42 mph. The solo men’s race was won in 8 days and 20 minutes with an also incredible average speed of 14.38 mph. Those riders are incredible! I’ll bet they can tell you about calories burned bicycling.

Join a Bicycle Club

Join a bicycle club and you will meet some very interesting people. Or join the CelebrateCycling.com community to meet other bicyclists living near you. Don’t worry about that little bicycle seat, you’ll soon get used to it. We all did. Most riders started out with short rides and slowly increased so that now bicycling has become part of their lives. Many of them join clubs or groups where they enjoy long weekend rides with their friends on peaceful country roads. When I started, I thought 10 miles was a big deal but today a 30-mile ride after work twice a week is my norm. I also try to get a longer ride in on the weekend. While they are at it they burn calories galore. Let’s look at a list of the amount calories a 200-pound person burns at various activities in one hour to see how bicycling compares: Bicycling for one hour at 12 mph = 725 calories Running for one hour at 6 mph (10 min mile) = 908 calories Basketball game for one hour = 725 calories

Rowing (Moderate) for one hour = 862 calories Jump Rope (Moderate) for one hour = 908 calories Aerobics (General) for one hour = 544 calories Weight Lifting (Moderate) for one hour = 275 calories As you see, bicycling is right up there with the rest and this list does not take into account headwinds and hills. They can easily increase the calories you burn bicycling. The real reason bicycling is such a great way to burn calories is that outdoor bicycling is so enjoyable that it beckons you to return. There is always a new landscape to look at and a new hill to conquer. There are friends to gab with and new routes to explore. Bicycle riding is simply fun. Bicycling is great, but you should also do something else. Bicycling is a great exercise for the lower back and all of your leg muscles, heart and circulation, but it does not do much for your abs, chest, arms and upper back. Spending a little time on the rest of your body will work wonders. If you have already conditioned your body to the discipline of bicycling, it is ready for some upper bodywork. Bicycling groups and clubs have members who are all sizes and shapes, but it is easy to recognize those who combine cycling, along with some weights and core body exercises like palates or yoga. They look great and have the complete sculpted bodies we all wish we had. Lose Weight While Gaining Strength And Form We all know that exercise is important if we want to lose weight the right way. Burning those calories bicycling is a great way to start, but we need a little more. We need to burn fat while building lean muscle mass to lower our Body Mass Index (BMI). It would seem like eating less and exercising more is the right formula, but it may not be. Depending on what we currently eat, we may need to exercise more AND eat more. Our bodies are very complex machines. If we exercise at even moderate intensity for more than an hour, we need to eat while we are exercising. Even if we carbo loaded for two days before our exercise, our blood and liver only store an hour and a half of energy for a trained athlete. Once we go beyond an hour our tank starts to run dry and we need a refill. Passing an hour and a half, we start to go into a hypoglycemic state where runners hit the wall and cyclists bonk. Neither one is any fun. Riding a bike beyond an hour and a half without additional food is self defeating. Not only are we out of energy and wobbly, but we could be burning up some of that new lean muscle mass that we have worked so hard to build. 10,000 Calories a Month! Keep at it! The calories you burn bicycling can easily add up to 10,000 a month or more. Wouldn’t that be great? If we keep this up, we will all be tri-athletes before we know it. Rob is a retired airline pilot who is a bicycle enthusiast. He believes that bicycling is one of the best possible exercises for men and woman who want to maintain their health as they age. It is also a great social activity that brings together health conscious participants of all ages, from all walks of life. He promotes all forms of bicycling at www.celebratecycling.com

What’s All the Buzz About

Humic and Fulvic Acid? By Dr. Donna, Editor

his article is a continuation of the topic from a few T issues ago.

Q: Is there a reason why someone might want Fulvic Acid by itself, rather than Humic Acid?

A: Some people are mainly

Secondly, processing is the most important part. Approximately 99% of the products on the market these days are manufactured using acid precipitation or chemical extraction methods in metal tanks. The acids or chemicals compound the naturally occurring plant-derived minerals into compounds in a sulfate, nitrate or whatever the acid or chemical extractant is being used, and then the metal tanks destroy the electrically negative ionic charge. All totaled, the product is basically rendered ineffective and may even carry undesirable compounds into the cell, and, without the negative electrical charge they won’t be able to chelate accumulated metals.

: If someone was looking for a way to increase their immunity, it seems that taking humic acid might be a possible solution and it would be better than fulvic acid by itself. What do you think about that?

HEALTH

Humic acid is a combination of acids that were originally found in plants. Unfortunately, our plants now contain only a fraction of these acids, and as a result, our health is suffering. The different acids found in humic acid stimulate various aspects of the body’s metabolic processes and biochemical processes. For example, if the immune system needs a boost, then the humic acids will do exactly that. Fulvic acid is one of the humic acids. The Chinese knew about humic acid and used it for thousands of years; old records reveal that they listed hundreds of diseases that benefited from the substance.

that man is made, physically, from every element within the earth, humic acid aids the body in its attempt to achieve homeostasis and balancing the immune response, however, as a nutritional supplement, we do not make nor imply, any medical claims regarding humic acid treating, mitigating, curing, or preventing any disease. Humic acid merely provides the nutrients, the body then uses the nutrients as it needs to. As far as humic acid being better than fulvic acid by itself, I believe the two used in conjunction offer the better product.

How might the dosage vary when someone or their pet is sick with these viruses versus when they are healthy?

A: Some customers have report-

provided beneficial effects under such circumstances. Pets are generally given doses by body weight.

Q

: Is it possible for someone to simply eat dirt or clay and get all the beneficial acids into their system? Why does humic acid have to be processed?

A: No. Humic and fulvic acid,

Great Tips to Get Going!

I started thinking about this last week when one of my very intelligent, and generally athletic clients said, “You know, sometimes I just don’t feel like exercising.â€? By Karen Frechou Rest and recovery aside, if there’s one thing I know for sure it’s that if you want to live a healthy life there are going to be times when you’re going to have to workout even when you don’t feel like it. So what is it that gets the athletes, weekend warriors and first timers to get up and get their shoes on even when they don’t feel like it? Here’s my take‌it’s the difference between doing what you really want to do and not just doing what you feel like. There are times when the couch seems to sound better than the treadmill. There are times when a cookie sounds better than a bowl of fresh berries. However, if you’re clear on knowing what you really want, then you can take actions that will get you a lifeline out of any exercise or junk food rut you’ve found yourself in. Below are a few. I believe Tae Kwon Do is the best choice, but find something that can get them moving and motivate them. Right now in America the U.S. Center for Disease Control says childhood obesity is a significant problem. University of Iowa Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. Eva Tsalikian, says, “We are seeing more and more very young children who are overweight,” Since 1960, the number of children who are obese has doubled in the United States. The U.S. government estimates that some six million children are now overweight enough to endanger their health. (Obesity is loosely defined as weight that is 20 percent more than appropriate for height and build.) “Studies show that obesity in children leads to obesity in adults, with resulting complications,” says Tsalikian. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1990 and 1998, obesity fueled a 33 percent jump in adult diabetes. However, the statistics are more alarming for young adults - for those between the ages of 30 to 39, the increase was 70 percent. Why are so many children overweight? Less activity and high calorie diets are the most common reasons according to Dr. Tsalikian. In other words, we let our children spend too much time sitting in front of video screens and feed them meals that might be less nutritious than we think.

In a study of 400 teenagers, about one third failed to get enough calcium, iron, and several major vitamins. More than 65 percent of children between the ages of six and 19 eat too much total fat. Half of young people between ages of 12 to 21 engage in no regular vigorous physical activity. Running to the refrigerator or the bathroom between game levels isn’t exercise! Why has this become an epidemic among young people? Many parents think their children will grow out of it. Some children do “outgrow” weight problems. Only 20 percent of overweight four- and five-year olds become overweight adults. However, evidence shows that children who remain heavy through adolescence tend to stay that way as adults. Society has changed. You need look no further than the demise of home cooking and the increase of fast food meals. The snacks and sodas many of today’s young people consider “normal” food are empty calories that do not promote a healthy life style. Children suffer physically and emotionally by being overweight. For many children, it is not the extra pounds that take the greatest emotional toll - it is the reaction of family and peers. Self-esteem becomes an issue. What can a parent do to motivate their children? Lead by example is almost always the best way. While kids will often 1/6 Pagethey Adsit up and pay attention when a fail to listen to parents or teachers, martial arts instructor speaks.
