Q:

Dear Ronda,

Each year I set a goal to increase my income and I never seem to obtain it. I heard everyone has a financial thermostat of how much money they will attract in their life. Is there a way to raise this thermostat? – Lacking Prosperity

A:

Dear Lacking Prosperity,

The reason for a stationary financial thermostat is connected to your belief system regarding money. We often heard comments such as: filthy rich, money is dirty, rich people are not nice etc. These comments, although common, form an internal representation that money isn’t a good thing. The main belief that holds people back from obtaining greater prosperity is self worth. If you don’t believe you are worthy of having more than enough money, you get what you believe. As Henry Ford so wisely stated; “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.” The first step to change your financial thermostat would be to improve your relationship with money. Become comfortable with the thoughts of having money and change the limiting beliefs that don’t support you. If you believe rich people are not nice, make it a goal to meet a nice rich person. Have

Money doesn’t make a person good or bad; money is just a means to an end. Changing your limiting beliefs and your relationship with money will raise your financial thermostat and increase your prosperity.

Q: Dear Ronda, My mother has Alzheimer’s disease and sometimes when I visit her she doesn’t remember me. It hurts deep in my soul when this happens. Am I so insignificant in her life that she can forget me so easily? – Forgotten Daughter

A:

Dear Forgotten Daughter,

Although I’m not an expert in Alzheimer’s disease, recently my own mother lost the battled with the disease.

In the early stages when my mother started to lose her memory, she made a comment that really demonstrated what was happening inside her brain. My mother asked me when she was going to be 50. Instead of getting upset for such a question, I stated her oldest was 56 and her baby was 43, so she was 50 for a while. She said okay and started to talk about something else. During another visit she was talking about going home, but the home she was referring to was her childhood home. She hadn’t lived there for almost 60 years, but she was adamant her mother wanted her home. Of course during this visit she didn’t remember me; I wasn’t born in the memory of so long ago. Understand the disease is not a reflection of your significance in her life, but a deterioration of the brain which is beyond her control. Finding acceptance and not challenging the memory loss is the most loving gift you can give to your mother during the last stage of her life.

Step 1: Determine your personal interests and hobbies. Step 2: Search out groups you can join to share these interests. Doing this will increase your social network and fill your life with activities. Step 3: Take a self development journey and address any negative emotions so you don’t carry these forward into new relationships. We often repeat history unless we have resolution on past hurts. In this journey, take the time you need to discover who you are, what you want and how you are going to live your life.

Editor’s Notes “

Hello...I’ve been anxious to let you know that the article (front page) for last Oct.’07 issue has certainly helped my business.  My webmaster has even posted it on the homepage of my web site – and, it’s brought nothing but the best information concerning Life Sources, Inc. to the public than any other publication in quite sometime. I want to take this opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally you for making this possible”-– and, a special “hi” to Dr. Donna for writing such a fantastic article.  You folks are the best. Sincerely, Dr. McCreery

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine, Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughout Sacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. Thank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services. Sincerely, Brett A. Gottlieb, D.C.

That discovery is what fuels the passion of life for me! How about you? In this issue, you’ll discover some great articles. First of all, the cover story really is something to pay attention to. BodyPro Technologies did us all a favor by inventing the BodiRocker device. To create one of the top inventions for exercising, the inventors had to think outside the box and keep their minds focused on results, and it paid off. Old Man Winter Workouts

O

ld Man Winter is right around the corner creeping into town. Enthusiasm and motivation turn to ice. You could head indoors, but it just wouldn’t be the same, especially when you’re used to running and biking in the fresh air. You can pack on a few pounds and cozy up in a blanket or get creative. Look at winter as an opportunity to add new twists to your regimen or hone your body for optimal performance in your chosen sport, be it motocross, softball or skiing. If you are already a regular at the gym, try something new that will challenge your body in ways it’s not used to. If you lack strong skills in running, swimming, or biking, winter is the ideal time to set up a program that will improve your weakest link. Some of the best cardio activities come from winter disciplines. Take on winter’s challenge and consider learning a new skill. There are plenty of organizations that put on events to help get you started. Last year a friend and I signed up for a “Learn to Skate Ski” day and it was truly an ultimate adventure.

your quads, hamstrings, calves, and glutes. Skate Skiing is easy to learn but takes a lifetime to master. To simplify what skate skiing is, imagine ice skating on skis while simultaneously propelling yourself forward with poles.

Cross Country Skiing The most profoundly aerobic sport on earth with a mix of endurance, long thigh-burning ascents and swooping downhills. Gliding through the woods is so peaceful that you forget you are getting a killer workout.

Snowshoeing You can walk or run with a pair of snowshoes. You can build an aerobic base through low intensity, long distance snowshoeing. Incorporate hills and develop leg strength and power and increase upper body endurance and strength by adding in poles.

Here is a list of fun-filled health and fitness winter activities that can revitalize your winter blues:

So no matter how cold it gets, head outdoors to work up that sweat. At least follow precautions against the weather and layer your clothing, keeping a moisture-wicking material closest to your skin and carry adequate liquid to stay hydrated.

T

o Evette Smith, helping people improve their health isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling. She lives and breathes what she can possibly do to improve people’s health.

Study Shows That A Chiropractic Adjustment Can Lower Blood Pressure Y

es, you heard correctly, a recent study published in the Journal of Hypertension showed that a chiropractic adjustment to the upper neck can lower blood pressure. However, this adjustment to the upper neck was not the typical neck adjustment that most chiropractors administer.

The adjustment in this study was one that only chiropractors trained in the NUCCA technique can perform. NUCCA stands for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. This association is responsible for training and certifying chiropractors in this adjustment technique that lowers blood pressure.

It’s that internal motivation that prompted her to begin taking classes in French medical aromatherapy, not just ordinary classes that anyone can take, but the learned methods and practices of aromatherapists in France where aromatherapy is part of mainstream medicine. These classes were offered only through Master Aromatherapist, Alexandria Brighton. Evette’s certification will soon give her the credentials of a certified international aromatherapist.

What is Aromatherapy?

The significant observation of this study was that this chiropractic adjustment not only lowered blood pressure but also sustained the lowered blood pressure until the study was concluded which was many months into the future. Furthermore, this upper neck adjustment lowered blood pressure as well as any of the best drugs and combination drugs available today but without any of the side-effects. Even more incredible was that every subject in the study responded and only 1 adjustment was necessary. In fact, the results of this study were so significant that the top medical researcher in the world on hypertension has decided to start a follow-up study to see if the same results can be duplicated. Many people are taking blood pressure medication but are suffering from side effects, which severely upset the quality of their lives. The NUCCA chiropractic adjustment to the upper neck could be a safe and effective alternative to blood pres-

8

sure medications and all the side effects associated with these medications. Of course, more studies will need to be done before your medical doctor is going to recommend this adjustment to the upper neck. That doesn’t mean you can’t try it out right now. This adjustment is effective for many other conditions as well such as migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and neck and back pain to name just a few. The adjustment itself is very gentle with no forceful twisting and cracking of the neck. It feels like a slight pressure at the contact point located just below the ear. For more information and to see an actual picture of the adjustment being administered to a patient please visit my website at www.painfreelife.net. If you would like to make an appointment to see if you qualify as a good candidate for this procedure please call my office for a free consultation and exam. My office number is (916) 965-7155.

Aromatherapy focuses on utilizing the essential oils of plants for therapeutic healing. When the highest quality therapeutic grade essential oils are used topically on the body or consumed orally, they can affect the energetics of an organ or body system by stimulating its renewal and restoration. However, not all essential oils can be consumed. Some are toxic with adulterated additives, and that’s where a trained aromatherapist really comes in handy. Your safety in using these types of oils depends on the safety knowledge gap, and Evette can be your bridge. “There’s a big difference between how I use these plant essences with Aromatic Acupuncture for emotional healing and how they are used in massage therapy,” Evette said. “As a bodyworker, I will use them 2 ways: 1) via a diffuser that sends the fragrance into the air; a great way that these quality essences promote healing, and 2) diluted with high quality message carrier oils (grapeseed or jojoba) that penetrate into the muscles being massaged to promote various tissue and joint healing,” she stated. She may even apply them to specific acupuncture points to accelerate healing. Inside her two bags of essential oils, blends and essences,

Want to Increase Your Vibration? Aromatic Acupuncture May be the Way to Emotional Healing

she has about 95 different bottles, each one of them for a different therapeutic purpose.

Emotional Blockages Translate to Poor Health “The goal of my aromatic acupuncture consultation session is to identify the body’s blockages of energy and release the emotions that may be ‘stagnant’ there. For example, if there’s a blockage of energy along the heart energy path (meridian), a person can experience a sense of abandonment, betrayal, no joy or passion, lack of happiness, controlling feelings or a feeling that the love being expressed is conditional. These emotions feel real to the person but they can be dealt with once the emotion has been identified, released, and the process of application is administered along the acupuncture point along the meridian. The essential oil blend will be used for a specific period of time by the client,” she said. “Every body and person is different; therefore, the body dictates the timeframe. After that specific time of using the oils is over, retesting is done.” The emotions that we experience certainly can be a response to the circumstances we face. For example, if you did not receive a Christmas present from your boss, any normal human being may feel his lack of gratitude, resentment, even betrayal. However, if your chakras are aligned, these feelings wouldn’t last too long. They’d be processed with a healthy

mindset and you’d proceed on to the next emotional crisis in life. If your chakras were not balanced, you’d hold onto those emotions longer – sometimes years – and then your reactions to new situations would be based on these feelings. That’s why it’s important to clear the negative energy to help restore a healthy balance.

Combined with clinical kinesiology, she can determine which chakras / meridians need balancing first.

Even the Unborn Can be Hurt

Some of the essence remedies, referred to as HYDRessences, are taken orally if they are recommended for you. These are called the Dragon series. The Yellow Dragon HYDRessence blend, for example, addresses our need for security, nourishment, comfort, stability, support, sympathy and abundance. The plant essences in this blend support the digestive system, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The White Dragon is a warming blend of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg that brings you the sense of letting go, inspiration, power, heaven, wisdom, refinement, and guidance. There are also other Dragons: Red, Green and Black.

“The chakras come into play very soon after conception. They develop at certain points during development. For example, the Crown chakra is active at about the 3rd month. The Third Eye chakra is active at month 4; the Heart chakra at month 6. If the mother’s experience during the gestation period is traumatized in any way, the infant could be born with chakras ‘out of balance’. This is just one way we can get out of alignment, and it begins at an early age.”

What is Aromatic Acupuncture? Evette admits that normal everyday traumas can also create blockages in our emotions that affect the chakras, creating imbalances. The key, she says, is to identify these imbalances and proceed to use the highest energetic substances on the face of the earth – true, pure plant essences – and use them to remove negative energy and get realigned to a healthy emotional state of well-being. The Aromatic Acupuncture method of application she uses was developed by Alexandria Brighton.

“It’s important not to release more than three emotions at one time,” she said. “Emotional releases can be overwhelming so proceeding slowly and cautiously but steadily is the key.”

These HYDRessences (Dragon) blends are dropped into water and then drunk throughout the day and/ or evening. It’s an easy way to foster change in physical, mental and emotional health. “Using these essential oils and plant essences has been such an aide to me and my clients. Their transformation has accelerated very fast. I’d highly recommend their usage,” she said. To find out more about setting up a consultation with Evette, give her a call at (916) 705-0600.

Flower Power

Flower Power

Here’s a list of some of the emotional hurts that other flowers in the ReviveAll™ combination address:

L

et’s get down to the bottom line of why you can’t keep those New Year’s resolutions, or worse yet, why you won’t make them in the first place. It’s not that you haven’t gone to the right seminar or read the right book or met the right people or the right mentor to motivate you. The real reason is that you have emotional issues that are blocking you. Without emotional blockages, you would simply set a goal, then obtain it, one right after the next. You would become limitless.

sense of futility and hopelessness is gone. After ReviveAll™, the rest of the Abundant Life Program is a great help and provides support over three more months.

How Can Flowers Have So Much Power?

We don’t know as much about flowers as we do about foods and herbs. Scientists know that the essential oils of plants can be antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, stimulant, relaxant, restorative and rejuvenating. The essential oil of roses can put a person in a romantic mood when he or she wasn’t feeling romantic 10 minutes prior. The

are no longer hindered by negative thoughts and feelings hiding in the unconscious or subconscious mind.” – Dr. Brent Davis

10

January Edition 2010

• “I lose my power when others don’t listen to me or invalidate me.”

• “I am too shy to show my capabilities and my talents.” • “I fear being alone.”

Dr. Davis screens every patient he sees in his office to determine if they have limiting beliefs. It is astonishing that almost everyone has several severely limiting beliefs, but “The Source frequencies of these essences they are often not aware of some of the appear to “overwrite” harmful memories and most serious ones defeating beliefs, replacing them with Divine because those beliefs flower harmonics. Our thoughts, behavior, and are in the unconscious well being can improve dramatically when we mind. A great many people benefit from starting with ReviveAll™, his master combination of six different flower essences. One of the flowers, Maquilina, actually has helped hundreds of people overcome a sense of futility and hopelessness. By simply adding the drops into water that is drunk during the daytime in sips, the energetics of the flowers are transferred to the person, somewhat similar to a homeopathic preparation or a Bach Flower Remedy. In 21 days, quite often the

May Apple

essential oil of lavender can relax the most stressed out person or calm down hungry cats clamoring for their dinner. However, the finding that flowers seem to have an emotional mission in life — to help us overcome our emotional blocks — is a recognition and belief that more and more people are starting to adopt after learning it from Dr. Davis.

Maquilina • “No matter what action I take, I will be defeated”

Pink Lady Slipper • “My heart is not safe.” • “I cannot trust in life.”

Blue Eyed Grass

• “I suffer from the hurt of emotional abuse.” • “I have deep rage that I cannot control.”

Tulip Poplar • “My self-esteem is weak and unbalanced.”

Now think for just a moment about what’s happening here. If you are walking through life with the hidden emotional belief that whatever you do won’t be a winning achievement for you and that your mistakes are unforgivable, how can you ever succeed? When people witness that they are harboring the belief that Maquilina removes (the utter sense of defeat) they often state, “Well… I don’t believe that!” They don’t believe it consciously perhaps, but it is the unconscious that is being addressed. How much good will another Tony Robbins tape or seminar or firewalk really do for you? How much good will another mantra or 100 affirmations do for you? Do you really think that if you say affirmations long enough, your subconscious mind will believe them? It’s 2010, time to try something new that really has much potential to change you on a molecular, energetic level, possibly permanently. Check out www.floralive.com for more info.

How to Test for the Emotional Blockage of Futility and Hopelessness Does it strike a chord with you that the following beliefs could be operating quietly in your unconscious mind? • Regardless of my efforts, I cannot influence the outcome. • No matter what action I take, I will be defeated.

Wild Iris

• “I am essentially unlovable.” • “I am disconnected from the Source of all life.”

• “I am free from the threat of all beings.”

If it seems so, somewhere along the long path of life, you developed this emotional blockage. By using the flower Maquilina, this emotional obstacle in your life can often be removed permanently, according to Dr. Davis.

Making New Year’s Resolutions Stick for Good

E

ven though giving flowers on Valentine’s Day is a tradition that began back in the 1700´s with the introduction of the flower language to Persians by the Swede, Charles II, it is still a very popular one that is carried on to this day. In fact, flowers are still the most popular romantic gift, along with chocolate, for this special day celebrated by those in love. Are you unsure about which flower to gift your darling this year? Here are the top five flowers that are sent out for Valentine’s Day.

2. Carnations.

4. Alstroemeria.

Carnations are the second most popular flower that is purchased for Valentine’s Day. This is possibly because they are generally lowerpriced than roses and are considered to be very romantic. The ruffled appearance is quite feminine and carnations make excellent flowers to give to women on this special and romantic day. They come in a variety of pretty colors to choose from, as well.

Alstroemeria is yet another popular flower for Valentine’s Day. This is very similar to the lily; in fact, alstroemeria is often referred to as a Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas. A delicate blossom that is often variegated or spotted, these flowers are a beautiful gift for that special person in your life. Though you may not be able to pronounce the name, they are some of the most popular flowers given this time of year.

1. Roses.

3. Lilies.

5. Tulips.

Roses lead the pack as the #1 romantic flower for lovers. These delicate flowers are much loved because of their message of love and the sweet aroma that emanates from their silky petals. They are so popular, in fact, that there are over 150 types of this beautiful flower! They have been bred to be disease resistant, for best aroma and for a wide variety of colors. Giving roses as a gift never has to be boring!

Lillies are another very popular flower this time of year. Romantic and elegant, these are high class flowers that give your Valentine’s Day gift a classy touch and bump it up a notch. Combined with highpriced chocolates, they are the perfect way to say I love you. I have this “pattern”, I guess you’d call it. My friends say they all do the same thing! We set those resolutions, go for it, push, push, push… And then life catches up with us. Mitch, how do we get ourselves out of this vicious cycle of bad habits, feeling like a pig (and a loser), then a good habits period (while work piles up), then back to the bad habits?! I’m almost 40, Mitch. I have a LOT of experience with this challenge. I’ve read some great books, made charts and lists… I just always fall! ARGHH!! Do you have some words that might help me? Good Goals Are:

Trying But Failing, Sacramento, CA

Dear Trying, Funny story about a guy who’d never felt drawn to exercise… a man was suddenly “assigned” by his doc to do three weekly 25-minute cardio sessions. So, most unenthusiastically, he forced himself out of bed at 5:33 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to join a neighbor for morning jogs. After a couple of weeks, I asked him how it was going. He told me he was enjoying runner’s euphoria! After I congratulated him, he finished his sentence with, “…on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays!” SO MUCH of what we encounter are NOT the actual experiences or things in our lives, but the challenging/blocking terms we give them! Take the term “eating better” which suggests that someone not eating an extremely healthy diet is “bad” (versus “better”)! Do you think a term like “power eating” or “energy eating” might have a different effect, when trying to get there?

• Realistic (Not so hard to reach they require 100% commitment) … Maybe those foods that aren’t on the “great for your health list” can be on the Reward Food list, or the Saturday Night Food List! There are NO “bad foods”; just foods that may need to be a more limited part of your diet for you to become your strongest self! Not feeling compelled to hit the treadmill endlessly has no connection with the terms “loser” or “pig”! There are losers who are in great shape! Some of our greatest human beings have/had very “unhealthy” diets! Remember the definition of insanity?! The only way to stop a perpetuating cycle is to GET OFF THE CYCLE!! Time to find a NEW approach! NEVER long for the old ways or how things used to be. They weren’t as they now seem, and you are a stronger, smarter being! Every day is opportunity to seek life’s lessons, and to find new opportunities… New ways of living.

• A stretch (Not so easy they aren’t interesting, nor rewarding when achieved) • Specific and measurable… Example of a poor goal: “I’ll lose some weight this year” A good goal: “I will lose 15 pounds by April first of this year” ANOTHER good goal: “Instead of pushing to the gym, I’ll do something I enjoy to get exercise!”

• Remind yourself you “Have Enough” • And, You have “Done Enough”! WHO are your resolutions with?! While our actions affect those we love, our commitments and integrity are first to ourselves. AND, your most powerful message: Set your Resolutions as “Intentions” – Loving YOU… And then LET GO! … You become powerful the moment you LET GO and trust a greater power. Namaste,

Mitch

Here are some resolutions EVERYONE should START withAnd let the others follow!... • LOVE yourself more this year than last year • FORGIVE yourself for ALL mistakes you’ve made in the past • FORGIVE others for ALL mistakes they’ve made in the past • Remember you ARE “Good Enough”

Thyroid health

By Dr. David Minkoff

Thyroid Disease: Why This Epidemic? O

n a global scale, a staggering 200 million people have problems with their thyroid gland, with over 50% remaining undiagnosed. In the US alone, the instance of thyroid disease is running close to epidemic levels and equally as worrying is the number of un-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed cases. So just what is responsible for these runaway statistics?

The Thyroid Gland — So Small, Yet So Vital Most people would locate their thyroid gland in the neck area, and many know it is somehow linked to weight-gain or weight-loss. How many times have you heard an overweight person say, “I have thyroid problems”? Well what does that really mean? The thyroid gland sits wrapped around the windpipe behind and below the Adam’s Apple area. This small bowtie-shaped gland produces several hormones in both men and women, the two most important being triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones help convert oxygen and calories into energy, making the thyroid the master gland of metabolism. The hormones are also essential for the proper functioning of all our organs, including our heart, musculoskeletal system and brain.

Hypo or Hyper? The two most common forms of thyroid disease are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and as their names suggest, they are at opposite ends of the scale. When it functions as it should, the thyroid will produce T3 and T4 at a 20% - 80% ratio. An underproduction of these hormones will slow down the body’s metabolism, causing hypothyroidism. Common symptoms of this condition are weight gain despite eating sensibly, feeling cold, fatigue,

14

January Edition 2010

depression and possibly increased blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Hyperthyroidism occurs when an excess of T3 and T4 speeds up the body’s metabolism, and if the mild condition is left untreated, it can lead to complications such as severe weight loss despite a healthy appetite, nervousness, staring eyes, accelerated heart rate and insomnia.

Causes of Hypothyroidism • Autoimmune thyroiditis, where the body’s own immune system attacks the thyroid gland, is the major cause of hypothyroidism. • A lack of iodine in the body. Iodine is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones, and iodine deficiency due to inadequate intake can lead to problems. • This is also true for a deficiency of protein in the body and a deficiency of magnesium and zinc. • Heavy metal poisoning (as with mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium) of the thyroid can also lead to hypothyroidism; chemicals and pesticides can also be a factor. • Root canal teeth can leak toxins into the body and enter the thyroid gland, producing malfunction. • Babies can be born without a thyroid gland, or with one that is not properly functioning. • Surgical removal of the thyroid gland or treatment with radioactive iodine, often for hyperthyroidism, can also lead to hypothyroidism.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism • In 70% of people with hyperthyroidism, the cause is a genetic disorder called Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease may be secondary

By Dr. Gregg C. Anderson

Discipline is a Pain!

to dental infections, root canals or mercury fillings. • Lumps or nodules in the thyroid may gradually grow and increase in activity also leading to an overproduction of thyroid hormones.

I

t’s into the New Year already, but not too late to take an honest look at the role of discipline in your life and, if necessary, make some changes to enjoy life more than you ever knew you could. Like many people I meet, you may have never really considered the health road you are on. Most of us just cruise through life and do our best to navigate the inevitable obstacles that interfere with our health.

• Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), where the thyroid gland leaks thyroid hormones into the blood. • Overmedication with triiodothyronine (T3) and/or levothyroxine (T4) may also cause hyperthyroidism.

Why This Epidemic? Thyroid disease is one of the silent epidemics of our time. The shocking fact is that nearly half of all women and a quarter of all men in the US will die with evidence of an inflamed thyroid. As with many of today’s illnesses, the increased incidence of thyroid disease can be linked to an overburden of toxins caused by pollution through air, water and food. If you have a concern about your thyroid, you may want to note the following potential causes of problems: Iodine deficiency is one cause of hypothyroidism. However, studies are also showing that in the case of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, the highest prevalence occurs in countries with the highest intake of iodine, such as the US and Japan. So, although iodine supplementation should be implemented to prevent and treat iodine deficiency disorders, supplementation should be maintained at a safe level. Soy. High soy consumers and users of isoflavone supplements can be at risk of thyroid disorders since soy isoflavones can damage thyroid function. This is actually a rare occurance. Smoking has a negative impact on thyroid function and can cause a 3 to 5 fold increase in the risk of all types of thyroid disease.

Health

Tap water. Standard water treatment plants cannot remove the chemical perchlorate from the water supply. According to one researcher, “There is a statistical association between lowlevel contamination with ammonium perchlorate and elevated or abnormal thyroid function.” Also, chlorine content in the water can displace the much needed iodine. Fluoride is a poison for enzymes that accumulates in the body. Since the body can only eliminate 50% of its total fluoride intake, this build-up can cause harm to the thyroid by blocking the use of iodine. Pesticides such as sumithrin (Anvil) and resmethrin (Scourge), are coming under considerable criticism for their adverse chronic effects on the thyroid. Family history of thyroid disease is a warning signal. Also a family history of depression, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue or weight issues can signify thyroid problems.

Only when the obstacles get bad enough, do we take ourselves to a doctor and hope for the best. I’ve seen that most folks never really think too much about their health until it slips away. By then, unfortunately, it can be too late to get much back. Like many blessings in our lives, we often take our health for granted until it’s gone. I have learned that much of what separates the “haves” from the “havenots” when it comes to vibrant health, is discipline. To pro-actively pursue great health and wellness requires discipline. The problem is, discipline is a pain-a real pain. Discipline is a pain at home, work, school, play, even in marriage. It’s a pain mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Heck, I’m tired just thinking about all the ways my life requires discipline!

I’ve learned that much about life is truly a pain. I have also seen that the pain of discipline is like lifting a few pounds. It takes some effort. In contrast, the pain of regret, for all the things we have lost because of a lack of discipline, is like bearing the weight of hundreds of pounds. Regret can be rough, and painful. So, it seems, that some pain is inevitable. The good news is, for the most part, we get to choose: the pain of a few pounds on an ongoing basis, or the unbearable pain of tons later in life. When I first sit down with new patients, I always try to get a sense of their values and interests. I’m very interested in people. Many new folks I meet at Anderson Chiropractic are in pain. Their main interest is simple; get out of pain! I can relate. I have been in pain, too. However, what is more of a challenge is to help people understand two important concepts. One is that pain is usually not the real problem. Most pain that I deal with is actually a warning signal. Its job is to alert the brain to a problem. Second, problems are often the result of years of neglect and inadequate discipline in terms of spinal maintenance.

vating and inspiring us to be disciplined! I think a little paddling on the tushie works the same way with toddlers. What takes more discipline is taking the recent bout of pain as a lesson and then embarking on a pursuit of stability, correction and maintenance. This pursuit takes more discipline because there is no longer much pain, if any, to motivate and inspire us. Now is the time to regularly hoist and endure the few painful pounds of discipline. The truth is that one’s health is going in one of three directions: slowly getting worse, maintaining or actually improving. We get to choose. If we choose to treat our health passively, it will usually slowly get worse. In the case of spinal health, this usually means the progression of spinal immobility, muscular atrophy, disc degeneration and then pinched nerves,

arthritis and organ damage: the pain of regret. The better choice is to accept and embrace the pains of discipline. It is the only way to improve or even maintain wellness. These pains include perhaps a little time, a few bucks, some effort and the like. No discipline is easy. Few people are ever successful by accident. I guess you could say wellness is not an accident. My hope is always to be encouraging and to help people make informed, rational choices about their health and wellness. There’s no free and easy ride to the top, but once you get closer, the view is amazing and certainly worth the painful efforts. To help, I have some awesome New Year plans for our patients and I am almost through the process to be a certified 100 Year Lifestyle Provider. Make 2010 your best year ever!

It does not take a tremendous amount of discipline to get out of pain. Pain has a way of almost making us pay attention and do whatever treatment is necessary until it goes away. Usually that involves showing up for chiropractic adjustments, home ice therapy, stretching and the like. Good ol’ pain has a way of moti-

Beat Winter Blues With Snowshoes

Snowboard Fitness– Snowboard Exercises and Workouts S

Physical strength is broken down into different qualities of strength: power, power endurance, absolute strength, speed strength, and strength endurance. What kind of strength is required varies depending on the kind of event. Be warned, these are advanced programs, even a pro athlete must build up to them, especially if they have not done workouts like this before or haven’t been training hard in a gym for at least 2 years. Working with a partner or trainer is always advised to maintain safety when performing heavy lifts.

Half-Pipe/Snow Park

For a pro freestyle snowboarder in the half-pipe, power endurance is going to be very important; in particular, the ability to accelerate off the lip explosively, and decelerate rapidly when landing back into the pipe, over and over again. To train for power endurance, you should use heavy weights for low reps (2-5) doing

16

January Edition 2010

compound movements like a barbell back squat and a slow temp (4 seconds down, no pause at the bottom, 2 seconds up, no pause at the top) coupled with incomplete rest. By managing, tracking, and gradually tweaking these acute training variables (rest, tempo, sets, reps), a pro-snowboarder can be assured that the program will allow them to keep pushing their limits on the snow and getting higher and higher out of the pipe. This workout should be coupled with an explosive/polymeric workout that emphasizes Olympic lifts (snatch & clean& jerk), depth jumps and other plyometrics that require the body to decelerate its mass at a rapid rate. There will be very similar strength requirements for the snow park. Increasing power endurance will help greatly in preventing injury and bumping amplitude. While the park/pipe is the best place to practice technical skills, like grabs, putting trick combos together, etc., the gym is by far the best place to intelligently push the limits of your strength and power.

Quarter-Pipe

For the quarter pipe, the most important strength quality is power. The PRO needs to be able to explode two times, once to get up, once to land, and then gets to rest for awhile in between attempts. Their program needs to include a pure power workout: heavy loads of 1-3 reps, 6-8 sets, only 1 or 2 exercises, including at least one

Advanced Snowboard Exercises and Strength Programs for Pro Snowboarders nowboarding is a sport that requires a balance of physical strength, technical skill, and mental focus. Naturally, for a pro athlete, all 3 of these skill sets must be optimized, along with nutrition, flexibility, and rest/recovery. A properly designed strength and conditioning program will provide any pro athlete with a major advantage in physical strength, AMPLITUDE, and STYLE over his/ her competitors, while decreasing the risk of injury and increasing the judges’ score cards.

“ to get flexible, you have to get strong in a larger range of motion.” Olympic lift. The athlete should rest at least 3 minutes in between sets to ensure maximal neurological recovery, which is necessary for maximum power development.

Grabs

While grabs are obviously technical and are not going to be practiced in a gym (unless you have a huge trampoline set up), you can still push the boundaries and take your grabs to the next level with a balanced strength training program. Optimal strength can only be developed when the athlete has an optimal range of motion i.e. flexibility. Lack of flexibility is mainly due to WEAKNESS, which the body responds to by developing tightness. So to get flexible, you have to get strong in a larger range of motion. A stretching program will help if you use gentle contraction while stretched to increase your strength in tight ranges. Hold the contraction for 5 seconds, then release deeper into the stretch, and repeat 3 or 4 times. Developing strength in new ranges will allow the athlete more flexibility to TWEAK THEIR GRABS! You know the judges love it; a little extra tweak can make a big difference on their score card.

Program Design

It is important to keep in mind that while there are a lot of cool exercises and workouts that will transfer to your abilities on the slopes, the only way to consistently make progress is to track your workouts and gradually manipulate the training variables (exercise selection, tempo, rest, sets, reps). With the industry’s explosive growth, athletes with the most talent, most commitment, and best programming are the ones that are going to excel both on and off the slopes. s temperatures start to cool, thoughts turn to the coming winter and with that, winter sports. One winter sport that comes to mind is snowshoeing. Snowshoeing has become a popular pastime in Colorado and other states that embrace winter sports. The wonderful thing about snowshoeing is you don’t need any specialized skills or training to do it. Any person that can hike can snowshoe.

on near the trailhead until you feel comfortable and ready to venture out. Take it slow and conserve energy by keeping your feet close to the snow so you’re almost shuffling along.

While snowshoeing has been around for many years, only recently since the 1970’s, has it become a recreational activity for outdoor enthusiasts. Snowshoeing was a necessity for many living in rugged, snowy terrain and the only way to travel through deep snow during the winter months. Along with the recent popularity of snowshoeing, technology has stepped up and designed and manufactured more durable and lightweight snowshoes. Snowshoes have come a long way since the wooden framed, rawhide-laced versions worn by Inuits and Native Americans.

2. Choose snowshoes based on your activity and experience.

If you want to try snowshoeing, check with local ski rental shops where you plan to snowshoe. Most will have snowshoes for rent. This is a good way to see if this is a sport you want to get into. The experts in the rental shops should be able to offer advice on size and type of snowshoes to rent. Along with the snowshoes, they will fit you with appropriate sized poles that will come in handy during your hike. You should also have a good pair of insulated winter boots and gaiters (gaiters fit over your pants and boot tops) to keep your feet warm and dry. Start off by practicing walking with your snowshoes

Snowshoeing Tips 1. Determine snowshoe size based on your weight, which will determine the length you need.

• Recreational (hiking snowshoe) – Best for most beginners and gentle terrain • Backcountry – Best for hut trips, winter camping trips and more advanced snowshoers • Racing – Designed for those who want to move fast through the snow and compete in snowshoe races • Women’s – Designed with women in mind to accommodate stride and body shape unique to women 3. Snowshoe poles are invaluable for balance and help to get you up hills. 4. Purchase good quality insulated waterproof boots. 5. Wear appropriate winter clothing. • Base layer • Wicking layer • Insulating layer • Warm hat • Warm gloves • Warm socks

new perspective and beauty to our natural surroundings. ”

6. Bring along the Ten Essentials – the very same essentials you should take on a hike. 7. Practice good etiquette while snowshoeing. Avoid cross-country ski tracks if at all possible. Big snowshoes can really mess up cross-country ski trails. 8. Bring along a nice hot thermos of soup or chocolate to enjoy on the trail. 9. Be aware of avalanche potential; see avalanche safety tips. Even though you may be careful and know avalanche safety rules, others may not be. So be vigilante and aware of others around you that may trigger avalanches and avoid those areas. Finding a good trail to snowshoe is as easy as finding a good hiking trail. In most cases, trails that can be hiked in the summer will make good choices for snowshoeing as long as they are not too steep. The most important factor is navigating. While many trails are well marked in the summer, winter brings a blanket of white that covers the obvious path you may be used to. The other common navigating obstacle is fresh snow. Some snowshoe trails may be very popular and well marked from previous snowshoers or crosscountry skiers, but after a fresh dump of snow, it is more challenging to stay on the trail.

Other hidden dangers may include ponds, rivers, hidden drop-offs that are not discernable while snow covered. Keep in mind that you generally cannot cover as many miles snowshoeing as you can hiking so pace yourself and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the surrounding beauty and solitude that winter brings. Popular snowshoe trails in Colorado can be found in most areas of the state. Many Colorado mountain towns have ski areas or Nordic centers that offer groomed trails for both snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Snowshoeing is a perfect way to get some outdoor time during the winter months and keep those blues at bay. It brings a whole new perspective and beauty to our natural surroundings. There is nothing better than venturing out after a fresh snowfall and breathing in snow scrubbed fresh air while savoring the quiet and solitude of the forest or mountains that a blanket of snow brings. I live and spend time in Southwest Colorado and have a passion for hiking and the outdoors. I live in the high country with my husband and our yellow lab Ginger. My website is focused on hiking information that includes reviews of hikes, maps and general hiking information, winter sports, snowshoeing, mountain towns with lodging and restaurant recommendations are included as well. Feature Story

It is important to eat a healthy dinner. First you have to ick up some pork chops, onions, and olive oil from the store. When you come home, get a big frying pan and put some cut up onions and olive oil in the pan. Then put the pork chops in the frypan and cook it for twenty minutes. While it’s cooking, you can prepare the wonderful salad. You put walnuts, dry cranberries, spinach leaves, cherry tomatos, and vinaigrette. Now I can start the steamed veggies. You put zucchini, squash, brocli, and califlower in it. After that you steam it in a steamer for twenty minutes. ENJOY! -Marisa Resuello

By Dr. Donna and Courtnay Kaump

What’s a Healthy Dinner? Here’s what the kids said… Health & Fitness Magazine has been visiting 10-year-olds at Jefferson Elementary School in Sacramento, helping the children learn better penmanship and learn all about different kinds of teas. They shared with us what they believe a healthy meal is.

A healthy dinner is steak with sea salt and a side of green beans. First put the steak on grill until it starts to get dark brownish and season with salt and pepper. Second, boil the green beans for five to ten minutes on the stove. Then put sea salt and pepper on it. Next, get a apple, orange strawberry and blackberry, then get a bowl and cut the fruit. -Deangelo Castine, Jr.

There are lots of healthy food and unhealthy food. First of all, people should at least eat one fruit a day. Fruit is healthy because it doesn’t have any table salt or grease. Next, people should eat steak or any orther type of meat twice a day. Steak is a protein but before eating it I would clean it then put sea salt over the steak. With that steak I would eat a bowl of salad. In the salad I would put tomato, mushroom, chicken and lettuce. Fruit, steak and a salad are healthy foods that people can eat. -Carlos Ortega

A real healthy dinner is steak with a baked potato, with a small salad. For dessert, people can have some sliced fresh fruit. People need protein in their life because I know for a fact people in your family don’t want to be a humungus balloon. -Azaana Sands

A healthy dinner would be baked salmon with steamed broccolit, cauliflower, carrots and brown rice. Preheat the oven at 350. Then sprinkle with very little sea salt and pepper. Place the salmon in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Next, start steaming the broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Also cook the brown rice following the directions on the box. Surround the bake salmon on the platter with the cooked vegetables. Place the rice in a surving bowl and enjoy a healthy meal. -Valerie Tasabia

A good healthy dinner is to make beans, chicken, rice. First, fry some chicken a vegetables. Put the chicken and vegetables in a pot. Then, cook some rice in a pot. Next, boil some beans and make chili. Then, after dinner you can have some peaches with white cream. -Michael Gonzalez Ever wonder what a healthy dinner is? A healthy dinner: mashed potato. First, cut the skin of the potato. Then I mashed the naked potato, put it on a plate with some steak. Finally, eat a cup of fruits for dessert. -Jason Abuda

A healthy dinner is healthy for your body. First I would buy some dried mushrooms, green beans, carrots, one garlic, one onion, one bell pepper, cabbage, shelled shrimps, and pork. I would buy the vegetables at a farmer’s market so they can be fresh. Next, prepare the pan to heat in the stove. Then chop the garlic and onion, then mix the pork and shrimp, cover and cook for 3 minutes. Then, put 2 cups of water. When it boils put the chopped mushroom, cover and cook for five minutes. People should eat healthy for their body. One way to eat healthier food is to use sea salt instead of table salt. Eating prosessed foods like chips, cup of noodles and macaroni and cheese can make a person gain weight. Healthier food for people are proteins, fruits and vegetables. Finally one of the most important ways to keep your body healthy is to drink lots of water and get exercised. -Jaden Gilbreath

hen Ricky Kaufmann headed out on a sailing trip to the British Virgin Islands, he couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to work out as usual. He brought along his lightweight, indestructible BodiRocker. What happened next defied his imagination. Men and women observing him use the BodiRocker stood in amazement at how easy it was to use it and how unique it was. Then they lined up to try it out themselves. It was fun to use, and had a dynamic nature to it and even looked pretty cool. Over the next few days, Ricky ended up creating different workouts for all the crewmembers and the BodiRocker was being used for several hours during the day – even though the regular workout only takes 10 minutes! Each one of them saw the benefits in terms of strength, coordination, and balance, and the ability to increase performance of the sports they currently played just by using it. The ladies commented on their sexy toned arms and stomachs that were visibly flatter after only a few uses. The guys raved about how the BodiRocker was the secret to getting ripped faster with rock hard abs. That wasn’t all that happened. When the boat was in the harbor, word from

Transform Your Body in Just 10 Minutes A Day! the grapevine sent fellow sailors from other boats in their regatta. The sailors wanted to discover what the crew was exercising on. Each night the boat was in a new harbor, the BodiRocker was passed around to all the crewmembers who couldn’t resist trying it. Here’s How to Use It – It’s Simple The BodiRocker isn’t just for athletes who want to finely tune the shape of their muscles. It’s also for beginning exercisers. The length of the average BodiRocker workout is completely up to the fitness level of the user, the exercises performed, and at what intensity. To address target muscles, it only takes 5-10 minutes. What is great about a 10-minute workout is that you can perform it multiple times throughout the day as a quick energizing break from the routine and demands of the workday. The BodiRocker can also be integrated into a routine that takes much longer. If you’re working out at the gym, integrate the BodiRocker into a workout as a single set or multiple sets of challenging exercises. About 30 different exercises can be performed on the BodiRocker and routines have been created for circuit training, martial arts, cardio, Pilates, and dance routines.

What You Should Know About Exercise Balls The concept of this innovative equipment started with a thought of excellence. “We were looking at classic, foundation exercises that can be done anywhere and decided that the pushup was one of the best,” Anthony Kest, President of BodyPro Technologies said. “But there had to be a way to improve on an already-great exercise. If you go to the gym, you will see people doing push-ups on exercise balls, half balls, and on medicine balls. They do this to recruit more support muscles in order to balance and correct position.” Now here’s the key to what Anthony said: The bulk of these support muscles comprise your core muscles. When you strengthen your core muscles, you improve overall athletic performance and prevent injury. “Core training has been very important to competitive athletic training for many years just as isolated strengthening of muscles. But until relatively recently, core training has not been well understood or adopted into workout regimens by the general exercising public,” said Ricky Kaufmann, COO. Ricky is the one mentioned on the sailboat earlier.

“Inspired by the benefits of core training, utilizing major balancing elements, and coordination, we developed an apparatus specific to the push-up exercise,” Ricky said. “The end result of our efforts is the BodiRocker, and although simple in its concept, it is an amazing and very effective apparatus,” commented John Young, CEO. The BodiRocker is safer and more comfortable than working on exercise and/or medicine balls. And it’s more challenging. It’s better than doing pushups on the floor. “If you haven’t been able to do pushups on a ball or even on the floor, you can do them on the BodiRocker. If you’re a very experienced athlete, the BodiRocker can take you to levels of fitness higher than on balls. You can do balancing pushup movements that are 90% one handed,” said John. The BodiRocker also allows you to correct your position after losing balance without taking their hands off the apparatus. Tested and Proven Ask Ricky about the testing phase of the BodiRocker and he’ll tell you about the care taken to create an adaptable type of equipment.

“The design of the BodiRocker went through a variety of phases beginning with the basic shape of the arc and what radius had the right feel and effect we were looking for. Handle positions and the number of handles were tried and tested until we found something that was effective for different size users while keeping the apparatus simple, focused and light.” “Once we had what we thought was a good prototype to expand our field studies on, we started putting it in the hands of many different types of users, from fitness trainers and athletes to people just starting to exercise. We took this feedback and incorporated into the next round of prototypes. From there we worked with fitness trainers as well as internally on creating a great variety of exercises that can effectively be done on the apparatus. In doing so, more changes were made to enhance the performance

of those exercises,” said Ricky. The result is evident. The BodiRocker works. Because of this, BodyPro Technologies is able to offer a complete 30-day guarantee on the BodiRocker. “The BodiRocker has been in use by several professional strength and conditioning trainers, Yoga instructors, Pilates experts, and dance instructors. Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers! Told by neurologists you’ll have to take medication for pain the rest of your life, and you will get worse? I urge you to get a second opinion!

H

i, my name is Dr. Wayne Pack, D.C. In 2006, I developed peripheral neuropathy. I experienced severe pain in my feet and toes. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else, and there were times when I wished they did belong to someone else. I was also having difficulty with my balance and coordination. After some time, I was examined by two local Sacramento neurologists. They both confirmed that I was suffering with peripheral neuropathy. They told me three things: 1) there was nothing that could be done for it 2) I would just have to take medication to relieve the pain 3) my condition would get worse and in all probability, I would end up with a cane or walker, and I might become unable to walk. As a die hard golfer and skier, I was devastated. I accepted their diagnosis, but not their forecast for my future. Shortly thereafter, I started exhaustive research on the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. My research led me to a group of medical and chiropractic neurologists in Europe who have helped thousands of peripheral neuropathy sufferers get their lives back. Their work has been introduced to doctors in the United States under the name, “The Neuropathy Centers of America.” I am happy to say that I am a proud member of this group of doctors.

elenium deficiency often goes untreated because it does not create any noticeable symptoms. A certain amount of selenium is needed to protect the body from viruses and to promote healthy thyroid function. Research is being done and shows promise in using selenium to treat HIV and AIDS, allergies, flu, chronic fatigue syndrome, strokes, arthritis and more.

By applying their treatment protocols, my legs and feet now function normally without pain, or numbness and I no longer experience a loss of balance or coordination. I have now been treating peripheral neuropathy patients successfully for over two years. And yes, I am now playing golf again, and I expect to go skiing as soon as the good Lord sends a little more snow.

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which there is a loss of communication between the brain, and the spinal cord, and the periphery (chiefly, the feet and legs, and in some cases, the hands and arms) where the many bizarre, painful, symptoms peripheral neuropathy usually occur. In order to gain more permanent relief in peripheral neuropathy, normal function must be restored between the brain, the spinal cord, & the periphery (the feet, legs, hands & arms).

Selenium helps to regulate thyroid hormones and also supports the immune system. It helps to create antioxidants that clear out and protect cells from free radicals. Selenium deficiency is thought to trigger viruses into attacking and reproducing. Studies are being done to test the theory that selenium deficiency is the trigger for the HIV virus (among others) to switch from dormant into active status. It is believed that viruses switch into action when they need to visit more cells in search for more selenium. It is also believed that appropriate selenium levels slow down the HIV virus replication process.

amount present in the plants that the animals fed on. Levels of selenium in soil vary so much from region to region that it is very hard to tell how much we are actually getting. Brazil nuts have an unusually high amount of selenium, as much as eight hundred times the daily requirement per ounce. If you do eat Brazil nuts, do so in moderation and watch for side effects of having too much selenium in your diet. Hair loss, horizontal white streaking or blotching of the fingernails, garlic breath, gastrointestinal disturbance, fatigue, irritability, and flushing of the face are signs of too much selenium.

The anti-viral, antioxidant and antibiotic properties of selenium make it useful for maintaining a healthy immune system and is thought to help prevent heart disease and certain cancers. Depletions can occur when you have gastrointestinal problems that cause selenium not to be absorbed. Selenium is also destroyed in foods that are processed or refined. This can lead to autoimmune problems and thyroid problems.

Selenium is critical for thyroid hormone metabolism. It is part of the enzyme necessary for conversion of T4 hormone into the active form T3. Low selenium levels can lead to thyroid damage and hypothyroidism. However, high levels can do the same thing. Therefore, if you have thyroid issues, it is extremely important to monitor your thyroid function along with your dietary intake of selenium. A skilled physician or nutritionist will help you adjust and determine the right dosage of vitamins and supplements required for your thyroid to function at its best level. We get selenium from whole grains, some seafood, most meats, and nuts. The amount of selenium we get from grains and nuts depends on the selenium content of the soil that they were grown in. Thyroid Disease: Why This Epidemic? Continued from p. 14

Radiation and X-Rays are known to cause damage to the thyroid and technicians should always cover the patient’s throat. Stress is a factor in almost every kind of disease and can affect the thyroid. Pregnancy. It is estimated that between 5-10% of all pregnancies will result in PPT (Postpartum Thyroiditis). Menopause. Hormonal changes during this period of a woman’s life can wreak havoc on her thyroid.

Why This Misdiagnosis? The statistic that more than 50 per cent of thyroid disorders remain un-diagnosed is alarming. Why is this? One problem is that because symptoms of hypothyroidism often vary from person to person and are non-specific, the correct diagnosis can easily be missed. Many cases remain undiagnosed because some practitioners and the patients themselves, mistake the symptoms of hypothyroidism for depression, obesity or menopause. Hyperthyroidism tends to run in families, occurring most often in young women. It is often misdiagnosed as an eating disorder, anxiety or stress. The thyroid affects all the other hormones in the body and its proper regulation is essential to good hormonal balance and health. With the disturbing increase in thyroid disease, at LifeWorks Wellness Center we suggest that an annual screening of thyroid function be done. This would include blood tests that check on thyroid hormone levels and body iodine levels.

Researchers Find New Patterns in H1N1 Deaths B

razilian researchers have performed the first-ever autopsy study to examine the precise causes of death in victims of the H1N1 swine flu. “The lack of information on the pathophysiology of this novel disease is a limitation that prevents better clinical management and hinders the development of a therapeutic strategy,” said lead author, Thais Mauad, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of the Department of Pathology at São Paulo University, in Brazil. The results of their study will be published in the January 1 issue of the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The researchers examined 21 patients who had died in São Paulo with confirmed H1N1 infection in July and August, 2009. Most were between the ages of 30 and 59. They found that three-quarters (76 percent) of the patients had underlying medical conditions such as heart disease or cancer, but there was no clear complicating medical condition in the remaining quarter. All presented a progressive and rapidly fatal form of the disease. While previous data has shown that most patients with a non-fatal infection have fever, cough and achiness (myalgia), Dr. Mauad noted that “most patients with a fatal form of the disease presented with difficulty breathing (dyspnea), with fever and myalgia being less frequently present.”

Exercising into 2010 T

All patients died of severe acute lung injury, but there were three distinct patterns of the damage to their lungs, indicating that the infection killed in distinct ways. “All patients have a picture of acute lung injury,” said Dr. Mauad. “In some patients this is the predominant pattern; in others, acute lung injury is associated with necrotizing bronchiolitis (NB); and in others there is a hemorrhagic pattern.” “Patients with NB are more likely to have a bacterial co-infection. Patients with heart disease and cancer are more likely to have a hemorrhagic condition in their lungs. It is important to bear in mind that patients with underlying medical conditions must be adequately monitored, since they are at greater risk of developing a severe H1N1 infection,” said Dr. Mauad. In these patients, H1N1 infection may present as a potential fatal disease, requiring early and prompt intensive care management, including protective ventilation strategies and adequate hemodynamic management. “We found that 38 percent of these patients had a bacterial infection (bronchopneumonia). This has important consequences because these patients need to receive antibiotic therapy, in addition to antiviral therapy.” The researchers also found evidence of an influenza-associated “cytokine storm,” an aberrant immune response in the lungs of certain individuals, which was almost certainly involved in the pathogenesis in these fatal cases of the H1N1 infection. “[This]

suggests that an overly vigorous host inflammatory response triggered by the viral infection may spill over to and damage lung tissue, thereby causing acute lung injury and fatal respiratory failure,” noted John Heffner, M.D., past president of the ATS. Further research is needed to understand precisely how and why certain patients succumb to a fatal progression when infected with H1N1. While most patients experience a mild illness with no lasting effects, this research lays important groundwork for future efforts by defining the histological patterns associated with a fatal infection. “We would like to deepen our efforts into the understanding of the immune responses in cases of severe infection,” said Dr. Mauad. “This could ultimately lead to new therapeutic approaches.” ––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Contact for Study: Thais Mauad M.D., Ph.D., Department of Pathology, Sao Paulo University Medical School, Av Dr Arnaldo, 455 Room 1155, 01246903, Sao Paulo SP, Brazil Phone: +55 11 30617173 E-mail: tmauad@usp.br Contact for Commentary: John Heffner, M.D., Past President of the American Thoracic Society Phone: (503) 215-6258

here are some interesting ways of looking at what our society calls Exercise. In America we “Exercise” more that any other nation in the world. We seem to be intent on looking the best we can in order to fit into the model of styles that we have created through movies and magazines, etc. As we grow older, we also would like to feel as good as possible for a longer amount of time. The thought of getting older seems to be terrifying to most of us and exercise is assumed to be the activity through which we might maintain a youthful position of comfort and vitality for the longest amount of time possible. Health and fitness are major goals for many of us. In order to reach, achieve and enjoy the experience of a goal, we must have a clear idea what health and fitness means to us. This is simply because we must know what we are looking for, in order to find it. We have been a most inventive lot here in America, creating countless machines and automatic apparatus in an attempt to make our lives more enjoyable. The idea of time-saving devices giving us more time for leisure can lead to many interesting outcomes, and stems again from our need to make life seem longer; without so much suffering would be nice. So now our “equation” is forming. Life Time Exercise-Health-LeisureInvention. The power in and of work is the catalyst that creates the interaction of each one of these components. Work is a very ordinary word in our society, which in truth creates everything extraordinary. Work through your life over time equals accomplishment. Work during your exercise time for health allows you to enjoy your leisure. Work on your Inventions creates time to exercise for health.

health

These six words – life, time, exercise, health, leisure and invention – seem to go together in endless ways. The word that seems to represent the desired outcome of all these combinations is the seventh word that belongs in our equation - Happiness. Without happiness, life is worthless. Time means nothing, Exercise is futile, Health is impossible, Leisure is nonexistent, and Invention is uninspiring. Life is not an answer to an equation, as if some kind of outcome will be quenching of the purpose of your life. Life is more of a group of wonderful questions whose answers come constantly in little Inspirations and glimpses of enthusiasm. A balance of your own perception allows the view of reality. Balance is the key to success in Life. Balance in your body is brought about through working out a balanced Exercise routine. Bringing Life, Time, Exercise, Health, Leisure, and Invention into proper focus creates a Happy life. In our modern society, time is a very valuable commodity. The scheduling of events that unfolds is a balancing act we all participate in. The form of exercise we choose is key to the outcome of our Health. The chosen form of exercise must have regenerative qualities that rebuild, replenish and reorganize 100% of the body’s systems. Each person has a chosen amount of time he or she devotes to exercise. Spending 100% of this allotted time engaging in exercises that only affect a small percentage of the body’s many systems and functions is not a good investment of time. It’s too much time invested with not enough return. We must go back to the essence of the body in order to bring the body back to proper balance.

There is not a machine that can balance the body and mind, bringing us to the point of health. In order to achieve balance and full body health, there is only one agency to turn to and this is the human body itself. None of those wonderful machines we’ve created have the ability to create themselves, maintain themselves, or think for themselves. We as humans must understand that the only “thing” that can fix the body is the body, and this must be done through the habitual practice of wisdom exercises. The body is not only psychological and physical it is also physiological. In order to bring the body to its full potential we have to take into consideration the wisdom of the body. Educating ourselves in the process of the Yoga science does this. Yoga Science was developed from and as the essence of life. It is a perfect science of life and treats 100% of the body’s systems, bringing the body back into balance. Man has invented many machines.

These machines are assumed to make life more enjoyable. We respect and admire these machines, assuming they will do he work for us. Much advancement has been made in transportation, communication and processing of data. Many aspects of life have come to change completely through the invention of many mechanical devices. These machines sprung from essence, which is creativity. It is very important to remember that the human body and mind created these machines. The human body and mind being Healthy, To be balanced and focused is the desired outcome of our exercise routine. In America we have been exercising more than any other country in the world yet we have more health problems than any other country. Look As Young As You Feel! A

ging is inevitable. As we look in the mirror, those little laugh lines, creases across our forehead, and the slight sag of our jaw line are oftentimes indications of life passing that we’d prefer to erase, or at least diminish. The market knows this and products, “procedures” and miracle creams abound. But do these products really do what they claim? And what about the more invasive procedures such as facelifts and injections of toxic substances such as Botox? How about a chemical peel where you literally dissolve the top layers of your skin? Yes, these can and do diminish lines and wrinkles. But do any of these actually address the sources of aging? The answer is no. This is the first in a series of six monthly columns, which will address anti-aging, both in skin care and nutrition. A revolutionary technology will launch this January. In fact, what is about to happen will change the skin care industry forever. It is patented and it is the only technology clinically proven to stop the skin from aging. Together with this technology, we’ll talk about another treatment for those who love their skin and want it to look more vibrant, healthier and just plain better. This was originally invented by an Italian physician and physicist named Luigi Galvani back in the 1700’s and has been utilized in highend salons, mostly in Europe, for the last 50+ years. Treatments range from $150 - $400, depending on local. That doesn’t include the time you spend fitting this luxury into your already busy schedule. You may be wondering, just what is a Galvanic treatment? This is a

process where a mild energy current is used, along with a treatment gel, to deep cleanse, lift out impurities, tone and tighten, reduce pore size and rejuvenate the skin. It’s affectionately known to Europeans as “the wrinkle iron”! Your skin becomes much more absorbent (up to 70%) to any product you apply afterward. When you’re already spending your money on costly potions, wouldn’t you like to know they’re actually being absorbed instead of just sitting on your skin’s surface? So perhaps you’re thinking that this sounds like a simple way to enhance the appearance of your skin, reduce lines and wrinkles, get that glow back, but you just don’t want to spend that kind of money. The recent introduction of a small, hand-held device allows you to have this fabulous skincare regimen for about $7 a treatment.

Botulinum toxin is the most poisonous biological substance known to man. An injection, in very small amounts, blocks nerve impulses and paralyzes the muscles. Voila! Lines and wrinkles become less apparent. The choice is yours. You can spend money on costly procedures that simply address the signs of aging, come with a big price tag and possible side effects, or you can purchase a handheld Galvanic device, cozy up in your robe and slippers and give yourself a safe, simple treatment that leaves your

skin rejuvenated, tighter, smoother and glowing. Over time, results can be significant. So, the next time you look in the mirror and long to see an image looking back at you – one with a few less wrinkles and tighter, smoother skin, know that you have an option. It’s quite amazing what an emotional lift an in-home spa treatment can be. For information, please contact: Carrie Pepper at (916) 375-0953, or e-mail: ppressint@gmail.com

Erase lines & wrinkles in minutes

Have you ever tried to get rid of cellulite? Pretty impossible without liposuction. Yes, that’s right, using this little device, along with a special body gel, reduces the appearance of cellulite. In fact, 35% using this treatment experienced a decrease (up to one inch) in the circumference of their thighs. That alone is worth its weight in gold! One of the most commonly used techniques today, Botox therapy, certainly does reduce lines and wrinkles. It is also extremely costly as injections need to be given every 4 to 5 months for lasting results. Side effects include bruising, flu symptoms, respiratory infection and muscle weakness. A friend of mine who tried this before she discovered the Galvanic device, said, “I had the worse headache of my life!” Although the procedure is deemed “safe” by the FDA, the

T

he thyroid, rather than being a separate “part” of the endocrine system, is a major player of the whole endocrine system which regulates metabolism, growth, development and puberty, tissue function and moods. It does this by secreting thyroid hormones that regulate the speed in which body’s chemical functions proceed (metabolic rate). Technically speaking, the thyroid gland regulates or in some way participates in the process of the following 14 body functions: • regulates basal metabolic rate • regulates body temperature • regulates appetite • promotes the use of glucose for energy • stimulates protein synthesis • increases lipolysis (fat breakdown) • regulates cholesterol levels • maintains standards for cardiac function • promotes normal nervous system development in the fetus and infants • promotes normal nerve and nervous tissue function in adults • enhances effects of sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response) • promotes body and skeletal growth • promotes development of muscles and muscle function • regulates standards for female reproduction and breastfeeding

14 Functions of the Thyroid Gland For as small as the thyroid is in physical size, it does quite a bit for our bodies. So just how does it do all this? The thyroid gland is located in the front of your neck just below the Adams Apple. It is wrapped around the trachea (windpipe) and has a shape similar to that of a bow tie or butterfly. Its only purpose is to produce hormones, which are introduced through the blood, affecting metabolism throughout our entire body. The thyroid gland produces its two most important thyroid hormones, thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), from iodine, which it gets from seafood and salt in the diet. Although the thyroid produces more T4 than T3 hormones (approximately 10:1 ratio) the T3 hormone is the more biologically potent of the two. Once introduced into the blood from the thyroid gland, a large portion of the T4 hormone is then converted into T3 hormone. The T3 hormone is the actual hormone affecting the body’s metabolism.

duce a hormone called TSH which in turn signals the thyroid to produce T4 and T3 hormones. In addition to the signal from the TRH hormone from the hypothalamus gland, the pituitary gland senses the levels of T4 and T3 hormones in the blood and signals the thyroid gland by the amount of TSH hormone it releases to either increase or decrease the production of T4 and T3 hormones. Because of the wide influence the thyroid has on the rest of the body, it is essential that the thyroid be kept in good health at all times. A dysfunctional thyroid can escalate, causing further dysfunction and damage to other organs of the body, and in some

Thyroid Health

cases, if left unattended, a dysfunctional thyroid can become fatal with a heart attack. Dennis Earle has written an ebook on relieving the affects of thyroid disease entitled “Secrets of Symptomatic Relief of Thyroid Disease” and other special reports: “Is Your Thyroid Causing Your Fatigue, Depression and Weight Gain,” “Women and Thyroid Disease” and “Foods to Help Eliminate Hypothyroidism,” all offered at www.thyroid-disease-resources.com. Mr. Earle was diagnosed with hypothyroidism over 30 years ago and has developed a weight loss and maintenance program for those with thyroid disease.

The thyroid gland works in conjunction with two other glands, the hypothalamus gland (the area of the brain that controls body temperature, hunger and thirst) and the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain, which acts as a regulator to the output of the thyroid gland. Snowboarding Games How to Avoid Snowboard Injuries O

kay, so we all know that snowboarding is considered to be an extreme sport and injuries are always possible whenever you are snowboarding. However, you can avoid getting hurt if you are very careful even though this isn’t always the case. There are precautions that you can take to minimize your chances of risking an injury. First of all, as with any other dangerous sport, make sure that you always wear a helmet. It doesn’t matter what type of snowboarding you do, a helmet can be your best form of protection in case of a wipe out. Head injuries are always serious and you can help to minimize your chances of a head injury if you wear your helmet. If you are planning to do stunts and tricks that involve air, you will want to wear a full face helmet. You can help to minimize your chances of facial fractures, cuts, etc. by wearing the proper protective gear. Another important safety feature in the sport of boarding is that of your board bindings. That’s right. If your bindings are not a proper fit to your boots or board if could result in involuntary foot movement, which in turn can cause you to wipe out. Make sure

that your bindings properly fit your boots and board.

Yet another important feature is for you to wear a board leash. This will help to keep your board with you in case of an accident. It may not necessarily keep you from getting hurt; however, it can keep others from getting hurt because of a runaway board. Many slopes and recreation areas are now requiring boarders to wear the

32

January Edition 2010

leash at all times while on the mountain or in the park.

Wear protective gear. You can pur-

chase knee pads or padded pants that can help to protect you in the event of an accident. The more protection that you wear, the better off you will be in the long run. It may not be “cool” in people’s eyes, but it is cool to help protect you from receiving injuries in case of an accident. So, who cares what others may think of you; at least you are smart and are wearing protection. Another great way to help you to avoid any possible injuries that could result in an accident is to know what your abilities are and to stick with them. Don’t try to go out of your realm, especially when it comes to your ability. Yes, you can try tricks and stunts, but don’t try them until you become a seasoned boarder and you have learned all of the ins and outs of the sport.

Always snowboard with someone else. Never do it alone. Make sure

that there are others around you at all times. In the event of an accident, you will be in low temperatures and if you have to wait for someone to find you, it could mean the difference between life and death. With a buddy or someone else around, if you wreck, there will be help.

Any time a new sport item is invented, two people will get together and make it into a competition. This is simple human nature and snowboarding is no different. For many who had not seen it before in the early 1990’s, snowboarding looked like some strange cross between skateboarding and skiing. In an amazingly short time, the competitions snowboarding enthusiasts enjoyed were a part not only of American competitions, games and sports, but a part of the Olympics. It was a meteoric rise for this popular sport that shows no sign of losing fans, supporters or its very own superstar athletes. In snowboarding an athlete descends a slope that is completely or partially covered in snow. The rider rides a snowboard that is held in place by a special binding. Snowboarding was initially inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding in late 1960’s and 1970’s, but really took off as a competitive sport a decade later. There are many different snowboarding games or competitions. Slopestyle, Big Air, Halfpipe, Boardercross, Indycross, Rail Jam, and Racing are among the best known. In the Slopestyle, the influence of both skiing and skateboarding are clearly seen. Athletes compete and perform tricks with moving over, around, though, across, and down terrain features. This style is an obstacle course in part which includes jumps and jibs for the boarder to jump or slide across. Big Air looks most like a ski jump competition on snowboards. A special launch is built and boarders jump and do tricks while in the air, then try to execute a clean landing. The Halfpipe is a ditch built in a semi-circle around 8 and 22 feet deep. Athletes go from one side of the ditch to the other performing

tricks while staying in the air as much as possible.

Winter Fun in Ontario

7. Luge – Natural luge or ‘Naturbahn’ doesn’t use artificial snowbanks but follows the natural contours, curves and banks of a slope. Redstone River Luge is only one of six natural tracks in all Canada. 8. Winter festivals – Anywhere that has snow cover for five months of the year will celebrate it at some point. There are winter festivals to enjoy all over Ontario, from small village events to the biggest of them all – Winterlude in Ottawa. A great experience for all the family.

The Rail Jam, as might be suspected from the name, is more of a jib contest. The snowboarder performs slides and tricks on rails, pipes, walls, and other features dreamed up by the race designers. Prizes are awarded for best overall in the male and female category.

9. Ice fishing – If you ever saw Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in the movie, Grumpy Old Men, you’ll remember the ice hut scenes. Ontario’s ice covered lakes brings this to you! Most of the larger lakes have ice hut rentals, so arrive rent your hut and start fishing in comfort!

Racing events are straightforward with snowboarders racing downhill through gates, which demonstrate technical skills along with the speed of the boarder.

Snowboarding games became a part of the Olympics in 1999 in Nagano, Japan. There are 6 snowboarding events at the Olympics including men’s and women’s halfpipe, parallel gain slalom, and snowboard cross. Go to www.SnowboardingGames. org to get your free information on Snowboarding at Snowboarding Games. This new website has great information along with a lot of other free information. You won’t want to miss the information on this website if you are in the market for Snowboarding Games.

10 Great Things to Do in the Snow!

Boardercross and Indycross are the standout competitions because they look more like a motorcycle motocross track than a skateboard or skiing contest. There are jumps and obstacles made out of snow on the downhill part of the course. Several boarders in groups of 4 or 6 race down the track in a series of heats in Boardercross. The Indycross is a single competitor run and the board rider has to skid and turn down the course to complete it.

Snowboarding has become a big part of the Winter X Games also known as the Extreme Games, a commercial annual sports competition held by ESPN. These games have become so popular that often entire Snowboarding teams from the Olympics show up to compete.

W

e can be confident of snow here in Ontario and although not blessed with mountains for skiing and snowboarding of the Rockies variety, there are lots of alternatives to get you wrapped up and out in the white stuff. Here are 10 great ideas to get those cheeks rosy and get your exhilaration soaring! 1. Snow tubing – I put this at number one as, in the words of a friend, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had with my clothes on.” Yes, this is a real blast. Sit in a big inner tube, get dragged to the top of a hill, choose your degree of gradient, then off you go. The most fun is with a group of friends or family and you have four or six tubes spinning down the slope. Try it – you won’t be disappointed!

2. Cross country skiing – For pure tranquility and the best of our winter wonderland, there is little to beat here with a few hours on the trails. This is an easy sport to learn; you take a lesson or two; rent skis, boots and poles, and you are on your way. Many ski areas have rest huts where you can get hot chocolate to warm up at the end of the day. Bliss! 3. Dog sledding – Take part in or watch this great activity and you’ll be hooked. Ontario boasts some of the biggest dog sled events in Canada, and some of the best places to experience sledding first hand. Try a moonlit outing. 4. Snow shoeing – This is such great exercise, and the best way of getting into deep snow country in winter. This is the way the early settlers

got around; there were no 4WD or snowmobiles for them! You can really experience what it must have been like. This is also the best opportunity to see winter wildlife. 5. Snowmobiling – There are thousands of kilometers of snowmobile trails in Ontario so whether you have your own or rent one for the day, you won’t be short of a trail to blaze. Try a snowmobile safari where everything is provided for you, even a guide, or rent a machine and go it alone. 6. Ice skating – Outdoor skating is exhilarating at the best of times, and even more so when it is on the longest skating rink in the world, a 7.8 km roadway of ice in the heart of Canada’s capital, Ottawa’s Rideau Canal offers fun for all the family. And it’s free!

10. Stopping in by the fire – Sometimes winter is best experienced from indoors. When the snow is coming down in bucket loads and the world is mostly white, the best thing may be to curl up in front of a log fire with a good book. Rent a cozy cottage in the country, preferably one with a hot tub, and prepare for a few days of complete relaxation. And after a long day pursuing one of these wonderful activities, why not come back to a cozy cottage, curl up by the log fire with a glass of wine, and reflect on this wonderful winter wonderland. Top Tips from the Top Dog Question from Lucy the Laborador: Top Dog Buck, how did you go from being just a regular dog from a dog pack to such a Top Dog on the Police Force wearing the Badge of Honor? It’s the new year and I was setting some goals for myself and thought maybe if I did the same things that you did, I could be a Top Dog just like you! Answer: Lucy, you are smart to think ahead. So many of our four-legged friends set such minimal standards for themselves. They’re content with wagging their tail when their Master comes home at night and begging for scraps at the dinner table. What kind of life is that? Dogs should be more dignified than that! Just think about it. We are scent masters of the world. Even the breeds

Make Your Own Pet Shampoo? Why Not?

that don’t ever do police work have noses worth high honor. We can sniff out a burglar, follow his track for miles, find cocaine amidst thousands of boxes on a cargo deck, help an epileptic get ready for a seizure and call for help, and identify hurt parts of the body with our nose. And that’s just one set of skills. Some of us can scale a 10-foot wall, jump repeatedly without tiring, jump through car windows to get the bad guys, tackle a human and take him down, and intimidate criminals into doing the right thing and not trying to escape. We’re graceful as a gazelle, dedicated to our Master, can sense evil intent on the part of someone and don’t put up with an evil eye looking our way. We’re the best of the best. And I’m not just talking about police dogs. Many of you dogs out there can do a lot of these things as well.

Then you simply mix the two bowls together.) In pet shampoo making, there’s no heating involved and no possibility of burning yourself. The shampoo ingredients are not lye based, as they are in soap-making.

We have a heart of gold and we would never think twice about giving our life for our Master. So you have to remember who you are and what you were made to do. That’s a first step and it’s drilled into us in training. We’re treated like Top Dogs and after awhile, we start acting like Top Dogs. Now if you’re at home watching a lot of television, let me ask you this. What shows are you watching when your Master is at work? The Dog Whisperer only deals with dogs that haven’t learned who they are and their potential. Flip the stations with your paw and find the ones that show amazing dogs, like heroic rescue dogs in the 9-11 disaster, FBI working dogs, Canine Courage shows, Therapy Dogs or Mascots of the Civil War. If you want something a little different, check out the movie station and find the movies about the RCA Victor dog, Air Bud, Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Then ask yourself the question, “What’s the best that I can be? What one skill can I excel in that will delight my Master more than anything? One day you will then have a picture pop up in your brain of the answer. Then just become the dog in that picture. Learning may have a few obstacles but you will do it because that trick is what

you’re supposed to do in life. Trust me on this. It works. Question From Jared Miller for Officer Randy: This New Year I want to set some goals for my family on crime prevention. Our neighborhood is getting rough and I worry about them. What do you recommend? Answer: You can make great progress by creating drills with your family on what to lock up the house before bed. Create a list of things that must be done so that your family can stay safe at night while they sleep. Include things like: check the windows to make sure they’re closed and locked, check the doors, check the stove to make sure the oven and burners are turned off and lock the garage. It may take a few hours to create your list but take the time to put the list items in order so the actual home check only takes a minute each night. This way it will always be done no matter if you’re feeling sick. If you’re not feeling well, it’s still important to do the drill because that’s the worst time that a potential criminal can take advantage of you. So be safe, not sorry! ou can make your own bath soaps. You can make your own laundry soap with soap nuts as discussed in our November issue. Why not schedule a great day with your friends, invite them over and make your own pet shampoo that smells how you want it to smell? The fact is that you can create a milder, more natural formula that washes your pet’s fur just as good as or better than the retail version. Today’s homemade cosmetics are not the traditional food-based concoctions of yesterday. Instead, you have access to the same manufactured and raw materials that the big companies use. And your products can look just as professional. 5 Good Reasons Why People Make Their Own Pet Shampoo There are several reasons why people make their own pet shampoo. • T ired of paying the high prices for pet shampoo at the pet stores • Prefer to add their own essential oils, fragrances, and active ingredients based on what’s needed for their pet • Sick and tired of being lied to by companies about “natural” products when the only natural ingredients are

a few drops of an essential oil. • W ant to experience the fun during the creation of their own pet shampoo • Want to create unique presents to their friends and family • Looking for a new business; breaking into the billion dollar pet care business has a lot of promise.

We ordered a Mild, Soap-Free Pet Shampoo Kit created by Somerset Cosmetic Company in Renton WA. All the ingredients arrived and the actual shampoo making only took 10 minutes. After mixing the ingredients, the shampoo is poured into the bottle that’s provided in your kit. (See www. makingcosmetics.com) It was an easy way to get acquainted with the kids that live across the street and a fun time.

The pet shampoo concentrate contains very mild surfactants suitable for sensitive skin, a soy-based protein conditioner, and an emollient that moisturizes your pet’s coat. The kids were amazed at how good their little poodle mix smelled and felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as well. The pet shampoo was a big success. Check out Somerset Cosmetic Company’s website at www.makingcosmetics.com and find out about their other do-ityourself kits for making color lipsticks, mineral make-up, rose hip hand cream, moisturizers, and shimmer body soufflé kit (light skin cream that gives the body a healthy glow and shimmer).

Certainly your pet will be happier and healthier with less chemicals in his shampoo. When it comes to chemicals, all bodies whether animal or human, have to detoxify them or they will get sick. Making your own pet shampoo is something brand new that not a lot of people have discovered yet. Another similar type of product is making your own pet ear washes and pet deodorizers. It’s only time before people start making their first quarter of a million dollars for this type of business; why not be among the first? The Process is Simple Making your own pet shampoo is a simple 3-step procedure, almost like making pancakes (You add certain ingredients together in a bowl and other ingredients in another bowl.

Is It Gossip

or Truth?

Editor’s note: Below is a copy of an email I received about a health issue. When these come in the email, it’s important to determine whether or not there’s any truth to them. Here’s the email: “I want my friends and loved ones to know what has happened to me in hopes that it will never happen to you or anybody you care about. About 10 days ago, I felt a cold coming on; so before I went to bed I used Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel. It’s supposed to help you “get over your cold faster.” Immediately after I sprayed it into each nostril I felt the most horrific burning sensation imaginable. It literally felt like I had sprayed pepper spray directly into my brain. It burned all the way to the top of my skull. My nasal passages swelled, my eyes watered - the burning lasted all night long into the next day. After about a day, I realized I couldn’t taste anything and I thought, “Wow! I must really have a bad cold.” Then I noticed that I couldn’t smell coffee brewing, couldn’t smell my perfume when I put it on, couldn’t smell the popcorn I burned, couldn’t smell my favorite candle. I panicked and starting smelling everything that I could find that had really strong odors - ammonia, finger nail polish remover, bleach, etc. I couldn’t smell ANYTHING! I started tasting everything that had really strong tastes such as HOT salsa, raw red onions, Doritos, coffee. I couldn’t taste ANYTHING!

I told my mother and she said, “Oh, I’ve heard Zicam can affect your olfactory nerve.” I went online, typed in “Zicam side effects” and bam; up popped all sorts of web sites with people reporting the same thing I experienced. It seems that this past June, Zicam pulled the swabs for adults

first dose; others reported a loss of the sense of smell after multiple uses of the products.

and children off the shelves but not the nasal gel.

I went to my ENT and he said the Zicam had basically “FRIED” my olfactory nerve and the results are most likely permanent. He put me on a strong dose of a steroid called Prednisone in hopes of recovering ANY bit of the nerve damage but he told me to “take this and pray.” He said he had read about the side effects of Zicam and couldn’t believe it is still on the shelf. It isn’t FDA approved. I am taking the Prednisone and praying but nothing is happening. I LITERALLY CANNOT SMELL OR TASTE ANYTHING! I can tell if foods are hot or cold, I can tell the consistency and I can faintly detect if it is salty but that is it.

I don’t want this to happen to ANYONE else! If you have Zicam in your medicine cabinet –THROW IT AWAY!

Editor’s Comments I did some fact checking and found this press release from the FDA to verify that the story above is indeed possible.

FDA NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: June 16, 2009

Media Inquiries: Siobhan DeLancey, 301-796-4668, siobhan.delancey@ fda.hhs.gov Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA FDA Advises Consumers Not To Use Certain Zicam Cold Remedies Intranasal Zinc Product Linked to Loss of Sense of Smell The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today advised consumers to stop using three products marketed over-the-counter as cold remedies because they are associated with the loss of sense of smell (anosmia). Anosmia may be long-lasting or permanent. The products are: --Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel --Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs --Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (a discontinued product) The FDA has received more than 130 reports of loss of sense of smell associated with the use of these three Zicam products. In these reports, many people who experienced a loss of smell said the condition occurred with the

“Loss of sense of smell is a serious risk for people who use these products for relief from cold symptoms,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). “We are concerned that consumers may unknowingly use a product that could cause serious harm, and therefore we are advising them not to use these products for any reason.” People who have experienced a loss of sense of smell or other problems after use of the affected Zicam products should contact their health care professional. The loss of sense of smell can adversely affect a person’s quality of life, and can limit the ability to detect the smell of gas or smoke or other signs of danger in the environment. The FDA has issued Matrixx Initiatives, maker of these Zicam products, a warning letter telling it that these products cannot be marketed without FDA approval. “Companies have an obligation to the public to demonstrate to the FDA that their products are safe, particularly when there is evidence they may be causing serious adverse events, and they are marketed for minor, selflimiting conditions like the common cold,” said Deborah M. Autor, director of CDER’s Office of Compliance. Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events (side effects) that may be related to the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, by regular mail, fax or phone. t’s 7:45 p.m and my neck has been in excruciating pain for the past 4 hours. It’s an old injury that is reactivated by lots of deskwork which encourages poor posture. It’s too late to go to the chiropractor and too late to get a massage. Do you ever have days like this? Days where you just want to scream and say, “Can’t someone take this pain away?” If You’re Complaining, You’re Not Looking for an Answer My pain and circumstances could be a lot worse. I could be just like some of the people that have so much pain so much of the time that they have to smoke marijuana to stop the pain. That must be tough because then they have to buy enough of it to have around in their times of need, making them potential crime victims. With new recipes, it’s possible now to get a high enough dose from eating a laced lollipop or brownie or even cup of tea. This option isn’t for me although it

certainly can work for others. Some pain-relieving methods that worked in the past may work now. For example, hanging upside down always takes the stress off the muscles in my neck, the source of my pain. Only 2 minutes upside down is enough to go from excruciating pain to no pain at all. There’s just one little problem – getting the gravity boots over the chin up bar and then getting up from the hanging position without traumatizing the rest of the body. Agility in this area never seemed to come easy. Taking three capsules of Vitamin E also has helped in the past. It takes about two hours to reduce the pain. Drinking more water seems to help as well. A few cups are ineffective but four or more cups can cut the pain. Exercising on the K1 machine also helps. This is a triangular oscillating system that shakes the body at a certain frequency that is thought to align the cells with the frequency

My friend Laurie sent me something new to try for neck pain. I reserved it for a night just like tonight. It’s a supplement called Eezapein, one that is taken by cancer patients who have greater amounts of pain than I do with my neck. Their pain could be throughout their entire body and relentless 24/7. Laurie’s husband had a protruding disk in his neck and was able to avoid surgery and decrease pain by using this product. If Eezapein is good enough for cancer patients, I’ll try it. It’s 7:50 p.m. and I’ll turn the burner with the kettle of boiling water on. (You did know that microwaves are harmful for your health?) The packet of Eezapein goes into the coffee cup and the boiling water fills the cup. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for it to cool. It’s 8:00 p.m. now and I’m ready to drink the drink. You may be wondering about the taste. It’s not bad-tasting and it’s not sweet. I’d rate it as neutral and don’t think anyone would gag on it at all. I drink it down and wait to see what is happening to my neck pain. 8:03 p.m. Pain still there. 8:04 p.m. Pain is getting lighter. 8:06 p.m. Pain is gone! How could that be? That worked so fast and it’s a drugless method of relieving pain. Wait

a minute, maybe this is temporary… 8:25 p.m. Pain is still gone totally. I can move my neck in every direction. It’s as if I had no pain at all, ever. What’s in it? The ingredients include: Notoginseng, Cnidium, Red Sage, Red Peony, Astragalus, Cyperus, Circuma rhizome, Carthamus flower, Codonopsis, White Peony, Lotus Node, Hawthorn fruit, Licorice Root and Stevia. This is a totally natural herbal product that uses a lot of Chinese herbs. No sugar. No wheat. No drugs. No artificial coloring. No milk. No corn. No soy. No preservatives. This is my type of product, fitting in with my ideology about health. And it works. Those cancer patients really had a secret there that they weren’t sharing with anyone else. They knew how to stop excruciating pain with a simple glass of herbal tea. I asked Laurie who else has benefited from this Eezapein, which is appropriately named. She said those with intractable pain, shingles, tooth pain (before they got to the dentist), back pain, and headaches. I mentioned we should add neck muscle pain to the list. The pain stayed away for 25 hours, then returned at a very low level. I was then able to go visit my chiropractor. I remained pain-free for four additional days.

How to Talk to Your Daughter About Menstruation I

n many cultures, people celebrate the day when their children become adults with a coming of age party. These parties honor the transition from childhood to adulthood. For girls, the day that she becomes an adult can be linked to the start of menstruation for girls. The type of celebration and the age at which these parties are celebrated vary, depending on the culture. In other cultures, stories, songs, and dances

are part of a big celebration for girls. Movies may also be incorporated into the big party. In these movies, a young character or characters start out on a journey of personal growth and by the end of the story, have developed in some way. This is usually through the undertaking of responsibility, or by learning a lesson. In western society, there isn’t much of a celebration for girls as they become young women. With little emphasis on

FAST Test for Stroke Symptoms the transition, children are not made aware of the importance of the event of a girl’s first period. In the 1950s through late 1960s, the big sanitary products companies such as Kotex, Always, and Tampax created girls’ first menstruation kits that were passed out to school girls right around the time that they would be experiencing their first period. At that time, the age of a girl’s first period was between 13 and 15 years old. Now, the age of a girl’s first period has dropped to as low as 8 and 10 years old, making it more difficult to approach the girls collectively.

Talking to your daughter about menstruation doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some ideas to get you started: 1. Call three or four of your female friends and plan the event. Input from other women is very helpful, as they will share their own stories of how this day was celebrated in their own life. 2. Plan the event on your own. This can be simple, such as scheduling a nice weekend together with

Celebrating a girl’s first menstruation is an important right of passage. Making it into a big occasion is a way of telling your girl that it’s a great thing to be female, which can encourage her own acceptance of her femininity. At a time when young girls’ bodies are developing, this is critical to her self image.

3. Bring gifts to the event. Everyone appreciates gifts and in our culture, gifts are symbolic of special occasions. The gifts you bring should be related either symbolically or physically to the occasion at hand. For example, roses that are not yet fully blooming can be symbolic of the girl turning into a woman. You could even fill her room with roses; now that is a very memorable event! Another idea could be a gift basket with all types of feminine hygiene products. This will offer her the opportunity to select the ones that she likes best.

Almost five million Americans have had a stroke at some point in their lives, and an additional quarter of a million Americans will suffer strokes this year alone.

In many cases, a stroke occurs without warning. Yet, for a number of people there will be signs. Unfortunately, many people, especially women, ignore them. Before the big one hits, there are usually several episodes of mild neurological symptoms, such as sudden numbness of one side of the face or an arm. This may last only seconds and then pass.

Other people often spot the problem first. They may notice that one side of the personís face seems to sag, or that they make little sense when speaking. Sometimes the person isnít walking right. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to disaster.

of the window of opportunity to treat a stroke. To help people recognize the symptoms of stroke quickly, The Stroke Association has come up with the FAST (face, arms, speech, timing) test: Face: Ask the person to smile. If the upper or lower face on one side is weak or does not move, it may indicate a stroke. Arms: Ask your loved one to raise their arms out straight. Weakness in one arm is a sign of a stroke. Speech: Have them say a simple sentence. Garbled speech, word searching or nonsense speech can indicate a stroke. Timing: Call 911 if any one of these is present. While they do not always indicate a stroke, time is of the essence. Taking an aspirin when symptoms first occur, for instance, can prevent most strokes, but it is important to use this time to get to your doctor for a proper workup.
