Unique Holiday Dinners A

re you ready to eat for the holidays? I know I sure am! But sometimes it’s hard to know what to make when you’re tired of eating the traditional foods that have been passed down for generations. If nothing else, it’s nice to add a bit of splash to the meal. That splash might be a unique pizza or even a bucket of chicken. Food items that make the meal a little less traditional can sometimes be inviting. Since I know there are families out there that absolutely do not celebrate the holidays in a traditional sense, I thought I would see what unique holiday dinners could be made that might add some flair to your next holiday dining experience.

Vegan Dinners We have now entered a new stage in our evolution as a society. Many people are not willing to embrace ham and turkey as they used to because they are vegetarians or full-fledged vegans. Since you are almost promised to have at least one vegan at your dinner table in this day and age, it is a good idea to learn to incorporate some tasty vegan treats into your meal. Some unique holiday dinners for the vegan diet can be found on a great website called BryannaClarkGrogran. com. She is a vegan who has taken the liberty of sharing some of her great recipes for others to enjoy. She shares her recipes for maple baked beans, green onion mashed potatoes, succotash, cornbread stuffing and rich brown yeast gravy to name a few. Also she shares some incredible holiday recipes, including vegan Christmas quiche, poppy seed spiral bread, chicken pot pie, Christmas biscotti, raw cranberry relish, classic seitan wellington, and soy and seitan “chicken” roulades with vegan “chevre” and sundried tomato filling with vegan bernaise sauce. Also, she has desert recipes including a gingerbread cake roll with

lemon crème filling and caramel sauce, and New Year cranberry-orange-chocolate scones. These unique options, and many more from her site, give you a variety of additional choices will make the vegetarian or vegan at your dinner table feel more than welcome.

Casseroles: Quick, Easy & Filling While many associate the holidays with being able to kick back and enjoy family, unfortunately, many people don’t have that option - much of the world has to move forward regardless of the holiday season. However, the people who make the world move during this time still have to eat. It is for this reason that many chefs and people who enjoy cooking came up with some quick and easy recipes that provide those too busy to sit down and make a full holiday meal the option of enjoying a wonderful holiday dinner. One unique holiday dinner that fits into the “quick and easy” category is casseroles. There are so many options that fall under the realm of the casserole that you can almost combine any two to three items and create a great meal with that requires little preparation. The website Familyfun.go.com is a great place to find many of these casserole recipes, some of which include vegetarian cheesy baked ziti, butternut squash soufflé, burrito casserole, Mexicali pie, fruited sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, southwest corn spoon bread, Italian chicken and rice, and pepperoni-pasta bake. There are many more casseroles to add to the list of unique holiday dinners, but these should help get you started.

food for the holidays, so I am adding some great Mexican dishes to the list of unique holiday dinners. Whether you’re making these dishes to add zest to your meal, or creating them to be the centerpiece, you won’t be disappointed with these choices. One great option is to try roasted corn and lobster dip, which has a light and sweet flavor perfect for dipping cooked shrimp. You can also try some tasty tomato green beans, which use a mixture of green beans and wax beans that are topped with chopped cashews. If you’re in the mood for a salad and dessert, you can try a strawberry melon salad and peanut parfait, both very tasty and unique. And the centerpiece of the meal - a wonderful compliment to the aforementioned sides - is the Mexican peacock, a combination of tender chicken breasts wrapped around a garlic and avocado filling, coated with breaded crumbs. Mouth watering!

Mexican Holiday Dinner Recipes

The holiday dinners I was not able to fit nicely into a category fall under “more” but they are just as unique. One list of recipes I ran across that sound incredible comes from Somdthisisliving.somd.com. They give a great assortment of dining ideas that come together to make a nice alternative to the traditional holiday meal.

You don’t have to be of Latin descent to enjoy some great Mexican

The recipes begin with the shrimp with beer bouillon, a great meal that

of course includes shrimp and beer (what else do we need for the holidays, right?). The remaining items in the recipe, including carrots, celery, onion, parsley and thyme, make for a very healthy starting dish. The next item on the menu is the mesquite pork tenderloin with homemade BBQ demi sauce, which sounds very appetizing. It is followed by the risotto and Italian sausage stuffing, roasted garlic mashed potatoes with sweet potato swirl and harvest vegetable medley. The meal is rounded out with cranberry shortcakes. Not bad for a holiday meal, right? This holiday season, when you sit in the kitchen thumbing through recipe books for the next great meal to “wow” your family members, remember, you can go the traditional route, or our can surprise yourself, and them, by going the “unique” route. Unique holiday dinners can add a splash of fun to your meal, or even change the scope of your family tradition. So why not try one or two? The worst that can happen is your family dislikes the change and chooses not to eat the food. But since most people cannot resist having their nostrils tickled by an inviting aroma, it is likely that your unique holiday dinners will be a big hit! Jeffrey Meier at Jam727 Enterprises at www.thearticlehome.com blog offers even more detailed information on a wide variety of topics. December Edition 2009

Relationships

Q: Dear Ronda, With the holidays approaching I find myself getting anxious to be around some family members. My heart starts to race with just the thought of hearing them make certain comments to me. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for this ongoing problem? – Anxious Amy

A: Dear Anxious Amy, You may be surprised that this is a very common issue for many people. The reaction to the comments is called a conditioned response or anchors. It is a basic Pavlovian conditioning of the nervous system. Often just your thoughts of it happening again will result in the negative feeling, and in your case, an anxious feeling. These anchors create the automatic response and therefore the feeling keeps coming up again. On my website I offer a free teleseminar on Emotional De-stress for the holidays. Even though this teleseminar was directed to improve the holiday season, the techniques used will explain how to change your reaction to people that have unnerved you over and over again. You may even find yourself smiling or even laughing at what has bothered you for years. The download of this seminar has been

Q: Dear Ronda, One of my students, a 15 year old girl, is going through a very hard time because her parents recently separated. I did have the opportunity to talk with her and she said she is feeling totally alone and afraid to let anyone get close to her. She even said she was putting up a wall not to let anyone in because she felt her world was crumbling down around her. Is there an approach I could use to help this young lady through this situation? – Concerned Teacher

A: Dear Concerned Teacher, Many children take on the blame of their parent’s separation; therefore respond either by putting up a wall, lashing out at others or demonstrating self-destructive behavior. Your best approach would be to first acknowledge how she is feeling without telling her she shouldn’t feel that way. Once she realizes you are listening to her and wanting to help her, you may be able to direct more appropriately. She needs to understand it isn’t her fault that her parents separated even if they are directing blame on her. Parents often say things in the heat of the moment without intending to hurt their children. Children are never the cause of the separation but often get caught in the middle of two angry parents, and the parents have no idea the impact their comments are making on their child. Having this understanding will lift the weight of this problem off the child and lighten her spirits. If you are not comfortable with talking to her about this situation, direct her to someone that will help her through this phase of her life. It is important to acknowledge her pain and not to under estimate how this situation could send her down the wrong road without the proper guidance.

Q: Dear Ronda, Expires Jan 15th, 2010. 3 night minimum stay. Must mention Ad. Other conditions may apply.

father is very active in his life. My dilemma is that in order to get my law degree, which will benefit raising my child in the future, I will have to leave him in full time care with his father while I go to law school up state. My ex-husband doesn’t have a problem with me doing this and has the means to take care of our son. However, my family is telling me I’m being selfish for wanting to educate myself while my son is still young. Am I selfish for wanting to provide a better life for my son and myself? – Torn Between

A:

Dear Torn Between,

Criticism from others has often stopped very capable people from following their dreams and goals in life. People that are jealous of you will criticize you for your accomplishments; it is up to you to recognize their comments don’t have to stop you from providing a bright future for you and your son. As long as you can spend time with your son during school breaks and during the summer months, there is no reason why you should not get your law degree. Make sure you have a clear written agreement between you and your ex-husband that the arrangement is only temporary. It is important your son understands he is not the cause of your temporary absence, and also the importance of education and how it can provide a better life for you both.

Editor’s Notes “

Hello...I’ve been anxious to let you know that the article (front page) for last Oct.’07 issue has certainly helped my business.  My webmaster has even posted it on the homepage of my web site – and, it’s brought nothing but the best information concerning Life Sources, Inc. to the public than any other publication in quite sometime. I want to take this opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally you for making this possible”-– and, a special “hi” to Dr. Donna for writing such a fantastic article.  You folks are the best. Sincerely, Dr. McCreery

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine, Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughout Sacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. Thank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services. Sincerely, Brett A. Gottlieb, D.C.

A Perfect Face for New Year’s – 10 Hot Tips to Make You a Knockout at Any Party

H

ey, you want to be a knockout at the New Year’s party right? Honestly, most don’t make the knockout list. Hmmm. Why? In our attempts to flatter and jazz things up a bit we usually gravitate towards our norms. The usual makeup face appears in the mirror and we become satisfied with being dissatisfied because deep down inside we really want the fabulous and glamour look for the party. Simply we want a new look. The good news is today it is becoming easier to create the glamour without the glamour frustration of how to and the premium price tag. There is relief from your “normal” face. This 10 HOT TIP guide will make you a sexy, silver stunner at any party.

1. Begin a new skin care regime. In order to create a fabulous new look, begin with a basic skincare regime that includes products that will replenish and regenerate. Vitamin C, a natural antioxidant restores suppleness, protects against pollutants and gives skin back its natural glow. 2. Sparkle this season with metallic makeup. Whether it is a sweep of eye shadow or a shiny coat of nail polish, silver is the perfect edgy accent for the day and night. 3. Makeup with the natural ingredient of marula oil creates a professional, polished and finesse look. Use foundations that have special minerals and high performance powders that work together to create a healthylooking complexion. An oil-free

balancing foundation is key to a model-like all over smooth face. 4. Try a shimmering eye shadow in the dusted silver color all over the eye area. Dab the dusted silver into the corner of the eyes and smear lightly under the eye as well. 5. Sweep a soft black across the lids & on the outside portion of the under eye. 6. Finish with double intensity mascara in the color black. Double the length and volume so lashes appear dramatically thicker and longer. A smudge-resistance formula is perfect for the party evening. 7. Because your eyes are dramatic and full of glamour; balance your face for perfection with soft lips. Apply a lip scuff to gently exfoliate dry skin and moisturize. 8. Line your lips with a very nude color for soft and natural definition. 9. Smooth on luxurious, long-lasting matte or creamy pearl color in a honey color. 10. Brush on three coats of silver nail polish with a lacquer finish for shimmer for shine (on your nails not your face). Viola! You have a knockout face to go with your knockout dress at any party. NUCCA: A Different Approach to Chiropractic with No Twisting and Cracking of the Neck or Back

A

re you suffering from pain but won’t go to a chiropractor because you can’t stand the thought of getting your neck or back cracked? If you are one of these people then you need to know that there is a different approach to chiropractic out there that gets great results and is extremely gentle.

NUCCA is a form of chiropractic that aligns the spine and stops pain without any twisting and cracking of the neck or back. When you go to a NUCCA chiropractor you don’t need to be afraid of getting hurt or feeling worse when you leave the office. This is the most common reason people come to me and are very

happy. They are relieved to know that they can experience the wonders of chiropractic without the anxiety and fear of getting adjusted.

come very painful resulting in chronic neck and back pain. Sometimes nerves running down the legs and arms are irritated causing arm and leg pain as well.

NUCCA is like sedation dentistry. You feel absolutely no discomfort or anxiety while the treatment is being administered. Most patients can barely feel the adjustment.

The atlas is also the most moveable vertebrae in the spine. All this movement while trying to support a 10-14 pound head puts a great deal of stress on the muscles and ligaments that support this area. Add to this accidents, injuries, and bad postural habits and you can see just how vulnerable this area is to misalignment.

NUCCA focuses on the top vertebrae of the spine. This vertebrae is called the atlas. Much of the neck and back pain that people live with is due to spinal compensations that occur as a result of this vertebrae being out of proper alignment. When the atlas misaligns it causes the center of gravity of the head to shift away from its base of support. This results in the nervous system telling the muscles along the spine to pull the spine in such a way as to compensate for this shift. These compensations be-

The result is that most people especially after the age of forty and if they have chronic pain probably need to have their atlas aligned properly. Get in Shape!

A

re you struggling to get in shape and keep your fitness New Year’s resolutions? If so, you are probably not alone. The sad fact is that most people give up on their fitness resolutions within a few weeks of setting them. You may have already said to yourself, “I’m just too busy right now to exercise and get fit”. Then in spite of your best intentions, you resign yourself to giving up on your fitness goals.

7 Tips to Help You Keep Your Fitness Resolutions soccer or basketball. Plant a garden. Play at the park with the kids. Whatever you choose, you should plan to incorporate at least 3 hours of physical activity into your week.

What you may not realize is that by making fitness a priority, you may actually live longer by helping to reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Getting in shape will also tone your body and give more energy, which will help you look and feel great!

5. Be Accountable. Invite a friend or join a fitness group. You will be less prone to make up excuses for skipping out a day of your exercise plan, when you participate with other people. I like to walk in the morning with a neighbor and swim twice a week with a co-worker. If you experience a setback and you likely will, don’t get discouraged. Just begin again and you will be getting in shape before you know it.

Are you a busy person who needs help staying motivated to get in shape? Here are seven tips to help you achieve your fitness goals.

1. Be Realistic. Don’t expect to run a marathon your first week. Break down your long-term fitness goals into small ones that you can reasonably expect to achieve. Set one or two small goals for each week and make an action plan on how you will achieve them. Be specific! Don’t say, I hope to exercise more this week. Say, I will walk 20 minutes each day after work. 2. Keep a Journal. Statistics show that by writing down your fitness goals, you are more likely to achieve them. You will also be able to keep better track of your weekly progress.

from work or the stores entrance so you will have to walk further. Be on the lookout for ways to become more active throughout your day.

3. Just Get Moving. Exercising simply means to get your body moving. This can be accomplished in many ways and does not need to involve a lot of fitness equipment. You can simply stand up and stretch often. Swing your arms and twist at your hips. Take short walking breaks whenever you can and especially during your lunch break at work. Walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Park your car away

4. Make Getting in Shape Fun.

Participating in exercise that you enjoy will make getting in shape much more enjoyable. The three easiest and most effective methods I recommend for getting in shape are walking, running and yoga. These three will help strengthen your core muscles and help you tone your body. Try one or all of these or do something else you like. Join a swim club or fitness class. Play

6. Celebrate Your Success. Each time you achieve a goal, give yourself a reward. For example, I put five dollars in a jar each week if I have exercised at least 30 minutes, five days out of the seven. By the end one or two months, I should have enough money saved to buy a new pair of jeans. 7. Keep Learning. Make it your

goal to keep learning more about why you should get in shape. There are many online fitness programs, which can help provide you with the knowledge and motivation you need. The one I use is geared especially for busy people like you. Following these seven tips will help you achieve your goals to get in shape this year. You should also feel terrific about finally keeping your New Years fitness resolutions!

Cancer

By Sydney Ross Singer

Bras & the Breast Cancer Cover-Up Editor’s Note: This is a continuation from last month’s issue. For part one, go online to www.HealthFitness.us. f particular interest is when breast cancer organizations antagonistic to the issue declare the bra/cancer link to be “misinformation” or a “myth”, without any scientific study supporting their claims. They say bras are important for women to wear for support, without any evidence showing bras are safe or necessary. They then encourage regular mammograms, cancer prevention drug therapy (not realizing that “prevention therapy” is an oxymoron), and even preventative mastectomies (which means that those who are high risk for breast cancer but who don’t want to get it can have their breast removed as a prevention strategy). Of course, it is better to remove the bra instead of the breasts, but bra removal is not a billable procedure.

O

Keep in mind that bras have been associated with other health problems, such as headaches, numbness in the hands, backache and other postural problems, cysts, pain, skin depigmentation, and more. And lymphatic blockage, which is the result of bra constriction, has already been associated with various cancers. Clearly, the bra/cancer link needs further research, while women take the precaution of loosening up.

Why the Resistance? What harm could there be in following our simple advice, or in even researching this issue? Why the defensive reaction?

10

December Edition 2009

There are three reasons: 1. The bra industry fears class action lawsuits. Many insiders have admitted to us that for years the industry suspected underwires were causing cancer. They know that tight bras cause cysts and pain. It is only a matter of time until a lawsuit is made against a bra manufacturer. As a defense, the industry is shifting the blame to the customer, claiming that most women are wearing their bras too tightly, and should get professional fittings. (How do you get a properly fitted push-up bra?) Breaking ranks with their industry peers, and trying to capitalize on the bad news, are several bra manufacturers that now offer newly patented bras claiming to mitigate the damage, including cancer, caused by conventional bras. 2. The medical industry is making billions each year on the detection and treatment of breast cancer. As mentioned above, there is a conflict between the prevention and the treatment of disease, especially if the prevention does not include drugs or surgery. The fact is that our treatment-focused,

profit-oriented medical system is making a killing treating this disease, and has billions to lose if breast cancer goes out of fashion along with bras. In addition, the bra issue will revolutionize the breast cancer field, embarrassing many researchers. Breast cancer research to date that has ignored the bra issue is seriously flawed as a result, which is why the “experts” are still unable to explain the cause of over 70% of all breast cancer cases. Career cancer researchers who have ignored the bra issue will have to admit this fatal flaw in their work, which they are not inclined to admit in their lifetimes. 3. Finally, there is the dogmatic, fearful resistance from some women who find their personal identity so connected to their bras that they would rather risk cancer than be bra-free (which some women have actually told us.) Women are cultural entities, and so long as our culture scorns a natural bustline, many women will submit to the pain, red marks and indentations, cysts, and even the threat of cancer rather than face potential public ridicule (which never really happens.) There are also women who believe the myth that bras will prevent droopy breasts. The bra industry admits this is a myth, while it still promotes it to improve sales. In fact, bras cause breasts to droop, as the breasts become dependent on the bra for support and the natural supportive mechanisms atrophy from non-use. Despite the resistance, however, some women have gotten the message. And many health care professionals, who have also suspected bras for years, are now spreading that message. As women hear the news and discover that eliminating the bra also eliminates cysts and pain, the news further spreads by word of mouth.

There are now thousands of websites on this subject, many from health care professionals including medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, osteopathic doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, lymphatic specialists, nutritionists, and others who care about women and helping end this epidemic. Grassroots efforts to keep this information alive and spreading have supplanted the traditional medical research approach, which has disqualified itself for lack of interest and conflict of interest. When a disease is caused by the culture and its habits, attitudes, fashions and industries, there is bound to be resistance to change. Industries that contribute to disease will be defensive, and industries that profit from disease will be conflicted. However, the truth has a way of getting out, despite the resistance and suppression. Thank Goodness the truth does have a way of getting out. Sydney Ross Singer is a medical anthropologist and director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease, located in Hawaii. His unique form of applied medical anthropology searches for the cultural/lifestyle causes of disease. His working assumption is that our bodies were made to be healthy, but our culture and the attitudes and behaviors it instills in us can get in the way of health. By eliminating these causes, the body is allowed to heal. Since most diseases of our time are caused by our culture/ lifestyle, this approach has resulted in many original discoveries into the cause, and cure, of many common diseases. Heartburn Free Foods for the Holidays:

Enjoy Great Food Without the Heartburn this Holiday Season

A

hhh, the holidays... a time of friends, family and for all too many people... Heartburn! If you’re one of the 60 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux disease you know how one meal of indulgence can lead to a day or night of misery. The problem is that during the holidays we allow more things into our diets than we do the rest of the year. We eat more sweet and rich foods, drink more alcohol and coffee, and quite often can pay the price with increased heartburn. But be of good cheer, dear holiday party-goer, you can still eat well, have a great time, and avoid your heartburn problems! The secret lies in knowing what foods are bad so you can limit them or substitute something in their places. The bad heartburn foods come in two varieties... 1. Those that cause an increase in stomach acid, some of which can spill over into your esophagus causing heartburn.

2. Those that relax the esophageal sphincter. The esophageal sphincter is a little muscle at the base of the esophagus that acts as a lid that prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus. Here are some of the heartburn-causing foods you should look out for this holiday season.

Peppermint What candy is more associated with the holidays than the red and white striped candy cane? Yet, peppermint is one of those foods that relaxes the esophageal sphincter and allows acid up into your esophagus. Instead, try a stick of red licorice. You can buy these sticks in bulk, or individually wrapped.

Chocolate Yes, I’m afraid it’s true; chocolate is another “relaxing” food that can open the way for stomach acid to reach your esophagus. Instead of chocolate, though, try substituting... Just kidding. True chocoholics know that there’s no

See the resource box at the end of this article for a collection of heartburnfree recipes, including one for fudge!

Alcohol & Coffee/Tea Between the office holiday party, Christmas with the family, and New Year’s Eve, alcohol consumption for many people sky rockets during this time of year. And, even non-drinkers can overindulge with higher than normal levels of coffee or tea (regular and decaf).

heartburn traps and snares--is brunch. From the coffee to the eggs prepared in butter and garnished with bacon or sausage, to the donuts and fruit juices, brunch offers heartburn foods at every turn. Even here, just a few modifications can result in a very satisfying meal followed by a pleasant, heartburn free day. Here are a few tips for making your brunch selections... Egg white omelets are better than those made with whole eggs, and if you like to have some sort of bread with breakfast, try a whole grain bagel with low fat cream cheese.

All of the above beverages can increase the acid production in your stomach and give you heartburn. Instead try substituting hot cider (in moderation) for the coffee or tea, and non-alcoholic beer or wine for your other favorite alcoholic beverages.

Apples and bananas are the best choices for fruit and, if you want a fruit juice, apple is probably your best bet there, too.

Hors d’ Oeuvres

Simply, approach each get-together or party with a strategy about what and how much you’ll eat. Then, choose to avoid the bad heartburn foods and, most importantly, have a great time this holiday season!

Spicy and fatty foods are notorious for generating stomach acid production, and no place are these foods more conveniently and neatly presented than on the hors d’ Oeuvres trays and tables at holiday parties. Foods to look out for include cheese, salami, beef sticks, and, of course, spicy buffalo wings. Instead, stick with pretzels, apples, or carrots and broccoli dipped in low fat ranch dressing.

Brunch Food Lastly, another meal that friends and family share together during the holidays--and one that’s loaded with

As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities for acid reflux and heartburn sufferers to enjoy delicious heartburnfree food this holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

All you have to do is to follow your instincts. Forgiveness is the essence of love.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You experience a new outlook and it carries over into the New Year. Now is a good time to make this as smooth a month as possible by bringing balance into your everyday activities. If you have any health problems, make sure to take care of yourself first before giving your energy away to everyone else. Your financial situation is also starting to take shape. Pay attention to your choices and know that this is where your experience is to decide. Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) “People”

are the reason for your transformation. Make this a time for self-discovery or you will miss a wonderful opportunity. You are coming to the end of a powerful year for you and now you start to consolidate your current situation. You learn by listening to your heart, so make sure that you let your intuition guide you in all matters. Your intuition is on target, so pay attention! Love is the mystery that you love to explore!

relationships

Inspired... Dear Mitch,

My father and I have trouble communicating with one another. We have tried many times to work through this but I always end up feeling frustrated, or he does. My husband and I always visit our families after the New Year, so here it comes… Sometimes in the right environment and mood we can have a good one-on-one conversation about life, relationships, etc. I know that I have some underlying emotions toward my father that I should work through that might be standing in our way. Yet, I have tried hard to talk with him openly and consider his views, yet he seems to always think he is right and in a way, shuts my ideas down as if to say, “That’s nice but I’m right and you’re wrong, so drop it.” I’m not sure if he realizes this, but I get really frustrated and I don’t know how to talk to someone who can’t seem to consider that maybe my opinion could also be right, although maybe not for him, which is fine. It has made me feel very guilty having such a close and communicative relationship with my mother and barely one with him. I used to be “Daddy’s little girl” and now I am pretty much my mom’s. I want some way to establish more of a relationship with him but my own busy schedule makes it difficult. I’m not really sure what to do. Sincerely, Would Like To Be Closer To My Dad...

Johnny, at breakfast: “Dad, today’s Lincoln’s birthday. He was a great man, wasn’t he?”

are positives suggesting you HAVE something good with your father (or you wouldn’t care!)…

Dad, always eager to teach his young son a lesson: “Yes, son, indeed he was. And mind you,” he added pompously, “…when Abraham Lincoln was your age, he was out splitting rails.”

... Oh, did you get that? You two HAVE something good going on!

“Yes, Dad, I know,” replied Johnny. “And when he was your age, he was President of the United States!”

Dear Closer… So, why DOES your father “reach out” that way?!... Yep, that IS your father’s attempt to reach out. Sucks, huh?! For a LOT of people, reaching out is uncomfortable! I wonder… • How do YOU attempt to reach out to your father? WAIT!! Don’t go to “Oh-It’s-MY-Fault!”… Honestly, the fact that you’re writing and concerned

• We ALL have underlying emotions about our parents which could be worked on. Only God knows what my son’ll be carrying to his grave about the dumb things I’ve done as “Dad”! Have you actually asked your father basically the same question you’ve asked me here? Amazingly, many people who seem “uninterested” or “resistant” to communication and intimacy are those the most are those who seek it the MOST!! Yet, as your letter suggests, getting there isn’t easy, is it?!... • Your father’s “style” cramps your expression. Got it. And I can relate. Maybe… • Dad strongly states his opinions, expecting an equally strong response. I bet his style is “conversation” to him.

• He’s accustomed to “the Dad role”, and feels he might let you down if he doesn’t project confidence or life expertise! • You still ARE “Daddy’s little girl”… But it’s hard to express now that you’re married and out in the world (assuming there’s not another triggering event that changed the relationship)… Like 99% of us, you don’t sound absolutely certain as to how your relationship with your father should look or be. You both aren’t exactly the same person you were even five years ago… • It’s hard to ask for something when we don’t know exactly what that something is! What do you believe a father should be, what a daughter should be, and what closeness IS – How would it look and feel? How? When? Where? WHY?! This might be a GREAT time to open up to your Mother, any siblings, and to friends about their beliefs and experiences with Dad relationships… particularly for adult women. Once you define what you want, during one of your “right environment and mood” times, without blaming him or yourself, ask him if he’d be interested in building on your relationship!

If he is interested, then you can say, “Well, one thing I’d like to consider is a relationship where we explore what we DON’’T know about each other! Is that OK?” This kind of conversation is possible IF he’s interested and is willing to change a little. If he’s NOT interested in new possibilities, then you may have to simply change the activities you enjoy with your father. Maybe less discussion, and more miniature golf… Or working a crossword puzzle together! Build on the positives you two already have… & don’t let guilt, shame, or fears come between you and those you love… Namaste ~ Mitch

holidays

By Bill Scibetta

‘Tis the Season to Binge & Stress; This Year Avoid the Holiday Worry & Pounds

T

he holiday season is a time full of joy, cheer, parties, and family gatherings. However, for many people, it is also a time filled with anxiety, stress, and weight gain. Unfortunately, many people often use the busy holiday season as an excuse to reduce exercise or put off starting a new program. Often these people have the intention of coming back with a vengeance after the New Year. “The New Year is just around the corner and I’m going to lose weight and get in shape”; this trusty New Year’s resolution declaration is also conveniently used to justify holiday overindulgence. Researchers at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) have shown that for most people weight gained during the holidays is not lost and accumulates on a yearly basis. Says NICHD Director Duane Alexander, M.D; “These findings suggest that developing ways to avoid holiday weight gain may be extremely important for preventing obesity and the diseases associated with it.” Maintaining a regular exercise program throughout the holiday season provides benefits on many different levels. The demands of shopping, parties, family reunions, and house guests can contribute to feelings of tension. According to The National Mental Health Association (NMHA), this tension can illicit stress responses such as: headaches, excessive drinking, difficulty sleeping, and the ever-popular over-eating. Exercise has been shown to be a tremendous tool to manage stress. Exercise will give you energy and the mental strength to

deal with the mad rush of holiday shopping, holiday travel and holiday visitors. Managing stress with exercise can also help control cravings for those comfort foods that adorn the holiday tables. Regular exercise also increases metabolism, thus reducing the detrimental effect of an occasional extra cookie or glass of eggnog. Experts at NMHA claim, even more people experience post-holiday let down after the New Year than suffer holiday anxiety. With this comes lack of motivation and comfort eating. It’s no wonder those New Year’s resolutions are rarely successful. Parties, large meals and extra calories are almost unavoidable during the holiday season. Weight maintenance rather than weight loss through the holidays is a much healthier goal. Exercising regularly and enjoying the few extra calories will break the vicious cycle of guilt, feelings of failure, and more eating. Getting a head start on exercise prior to January 1st will give you a healthier and happier holiday season as well as make those New Year’s resolution goals far more attainable.

Healthy Holiday Tips: 1. Focus on weight maintenance not weight loss – Parties, large meals and extra calories are almost unavoidable during the holiday season. If you are currently overweight and want to lose weight, this is not the time to do it; setting difficult or unrealistic goals can lead to a vicious cycle of guilt, feelings of failure, and more eating.

2. Get moving – Regular exercise

will increase metabolism and allow you to enjoy a few extra calories without putting on the pounds. Exercise will

give you energy and the mental strength to deal with the mad rush of holiday shopping, the holiday travel or holiday visitors and the party hopping.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep – Lack of

sleep impairs our ability to handle stress (which there is usually no shortage of during the holidays). Chronic sleep loss can also affect various components of metabolism that influence hunger and weight gain.

4. Substitute healthy recipes –

Use applesauce in place of oil; use egg whites in place of whole eggs; try plain nonfat yogurt in place of sour cream. Magazines and healthy cooking cookbooks are full of reduced calorie and reduced fat holiday recipes that taste great.

5. Don’t go to parties hungry –

Going to a party on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster. Starting your day with a healthy breakfast and eating sensibly throughout the day should help you control your appetite and avoid over-indulging on the typically high fat and high calorie holiday fare.

6. Eat slowly – Make one plate of the foods you really want. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full. Take your time to enjoy the taste of every bite, and you will realize you don’t need to go back for seconds. 7. Limit alcoholic beverages – Li-

quor, wines and mixed drinks can con-

tain 150-450 calories per glass whereas, water and diet sodas are calorie-free. If you choose to drink, try light wines and light beers, and use non-alcoholic mixers such as water and diet soda. Limit yourself to one or two drinks.

8. Get rid of leftovers – Some foods

are more fattening than others, however, no food will make you gain weight unless you eat too much of it. Often we eat beyond our body’s physical hunger simply because food is there.

9. Keep it in perspective – It takes

days of overeating to gain weight; one day won’t make or break your eating plan. Nothing is more destructive to a healthy eating plan than the negative feelings of failure and guilt. If you overindulge at a holiday meal or party, don’t beat yourself up; simply return to your sensible healthy diet the next day.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Check Your Engines!

I

think the baby boomers could be called the “Plop Plop, Fizz Fizz” generation. You can probably easily finish the jingle, “Plop Plop, Fizz Fizz”______…(oh what a relief it is)! For example, instead of making better choices about things, like the food we challenge our stomachs with, we may simply pig out, take a remedy, and hope for the best.

any duct tape in your trunk by any chance?” Relieved, I told him that I did. He then told me to tear off about a three-inch piece and stick it over the check engine light on my dash and keep driving! Problem resolved. Out of sight, out of mind! Okay, so if you know Tim, you know he never would have made that silly recommendation if this had been a true story.

Vacations and holidays present a real challenge with healthy eating. In terms of fitness, we may also boldly take our bodies to places, activities and events that they haven’t seen or done in years. Too often, the traveling is stressful, the activities challenging, the holidays crazy, and as a result, our spines and parts get tight and sore, and sometimes injured.

What’s interesting however is how many people do the same type of thing when they have a “check engine” symptom such as a headache, joint pain, or even sciatica and then try to patch it up with a 500-milligram or larger piece of “duct tape” pain reliever. Acute pain is not the enemy. It’s our friend, and our early warning system that tells us, for example, to get our hand off the hot stove, or that we are out of shape, that our back is weak, or worse yet, that we are having a heart attack!

You’ve probably noticed that the supermarket devotes a whole aisle just for short-term symptomatic relief products such as analgesics, cough syrup, antacids and the like. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a little relief. Nobody likes to hurt. It’s just important to know that relief usually comes with a price in terms of side effects as well as the cost of the remedy itself. It’s also important to know that there’s not a remedy on the shelf that actually cures the problem. Remedies simply patch or relieve the result of the problem. This can lead to a false sense of health assurance, allowing the problem to get worse. To illustrate, recently I was driving down Highway 50, when all of a sudden, the “check engine” light started flashing on the dashboard of my car. I immediately pulled over and called Tim at OK Tire and Automotive, and explained to him what was going on. He said, “Well Doc, do you have

the time, the first symptom of heart disease is a fatal heart attack. The silent problem that I see very often is nerve interference and arthritis caused by joints in the spine or extremities that have misaligned due to stress or injuries and have lost their normal function. The most common history I hear from people in my office with acute pinched nerves and pain is. “I didn’t do anything. I just bent over to pick up my shoe, and by back went out.” I hear this kind of history much more than traumatic injuries such as automobile accidents.

So, if your “check engine” light starts flashing, forget the “duct tape” and head to the “shop” and get checked out. Be thankful for the early warning system you have. Better yet, have a periodic check-up of your spine, joints and nervous system and make sure there’s not a silent problem on the verge of becoming a crisis. It could make all the difference in your future. I wish you all a very fun, blessed, and enjoyable Holidays. If you think you may need help, call us at 916-485-5433 or visit www.andersonchiro.com.

When we mask our pain with medication, we also put our kidneys and livers at significant risk. In fact, it was recently discovered that acetaminophen, commonly sold as Tylenol, is the number one cause of acute liver failure. It is an often-overlooked ingredient in many over the counter remedies, as well as Prescription drugs like Vicodin, which increases the risk of overdosing. We also jeopardize the integrity of our bodies by ignoring potentially serious problems. So, let’s have a little respect for those annoying symptoms! Heeding their call may improve or even save your life some day. The problem with problems is that many of them are silent. The “check engine” light never comes on. No symptoms occur. However, the damage caused by the silent problem may continue to accumulate until it causes a crisis. Interestingly, 40 percent of December Edition 2009

KNOW THYSELF

plan family get-together

The first key to creating a peaceful holiday season is identifying those holiday traditions that you ENJOY and those that you don’t. When you spend your precious time and energy on activities that you don’t find rewarding, you are destined to become FRUSTRATED and cranky. So go ahead and be honest with yourself before the season even starts. Make a list of every possible holiday “obligation” that you can think of. Your list might contain (but not be limited to) the following:

spend time with kids decorate the tree clean house shop for food attend a concert/play watch holiday TV visit Santa look at lights

send greeting cards

host a party and/or attend a party

bake holiday goodies

take a walk in nature

decorate the house shop for gifts wrap gifts make the holiday meal attend church services go caroling volunteer visit extended family visit friends spend time with spouse

December Edition 2009

Now, here’s the real trick – circle those items that you absolutely enjoy doing and don’t want to miss out on this holiday season. And cross out those that you hate, despise, and dread. Be HONEST here! If you loathe baking, don’t try to convince yourself that this year you will turn into Donna Reed with a batch of homemade gingerbread. And you can get very specific if you need to. You might love visiting with your parents, but can’t stand seeing your critical Aunt Louise. That’s fine – make visiting your parents one activity and seeing Aunt Louise another. It might be a good idea to have everyone in

your family make their own lists – everyone has different ideas about what activities are joyous and which ones are miserable.

FITTING IN THE JOY Take a look at your list – which items did you circle? Did you feel so strongly about some activities that you double-circled them or put a star by the side? Those are your true priorities – and no matter what you do this season, you need to MAKE time to fit them in. Notice I didn’t say “find” time – the best way to assure that you will never get around to doing something is to say, “I’ll do it when I find a few free minutes.” If you want to do it, SCHEDULE it into your calendar. If walking around your neighborhood with your family singing carols and looking at holiday lights is a priority, sit down together and pick an evening and have everyone block it off. It’s as simple as that. So at the start of the season, decide ahead of time which activities on ev-

eryone’s lists are the most important. Of course, you’ll have to be realistic about what you have time for – you may only have enough room in your schedule for each person to pick three priorities instead of eight. And you may need to do a little TRADING with your loved ones – “I’ll go to Christmas Eve services with you, and in return I’d like for you to go for a nature walk on Saturday with me.” Creating harmony in any situation is about COMPROMISING – just don’t allow yourself to bend so far that you give up all of your priorities for someone else’s. Everyone should feel that his or her needs are being met.

LET GO OF THE “HAVE TO’S” So the big question now is “how do I fit in all of these priorities when I’ve got other chores to do?” It can seem hard to make time for caroling and roasting chestnuts and all of the good continued on next page...

continued from previous page...

stuff when you have so many OBLIGATIONS. Those “I have to’s” will absolutely kill you! Well let me start by asking WHY you “have to”? Are you being graded on how much you accomplish during the holidays? Are you going to be judged harshly by your family, friends, and co-workers if you skip out on the cards or parties or baking this year? If they do judge you harshly, I guess you need to ask yourself why you would want to have that kind of people in your life in the first place! If you don’t want to do it, a simple NO should be sufficient - especially if you find an activity that everyone in your household has crossed off of their lists. Remember, the only things that you “have to” do in this life are pay taxes and die – putting up a Christmas tree isn’t required! Let me share a story to illustrate. A few years ago, my husband and I had a really rough year and decided to SKIP OUT on the traditional family Christmas get-together for the first time in our lives. We chose to go on a trip by ourselves – cross-country skiing in the middle of nowhere in Colorado – instead of spending the holidays with our family. And since we were going out of town so early in December, we only put up minimal decorations and didn’t send any holiday cards. We worried and worried that we were going to OFFEND someone with our crass insensitivity – but do you know what happened? Everyone we talked to (family included) said, “Boy, I wish I had the courage to do that!” It turned out that 90% of the people we knew had considered doing the same thing at one point in time, but had never been able to walk

away from the pressure of the “have to’s.” Well, we had a marvelous time (one of our best Christmases ever), everyone loved hearing about our trip, and we now take a holiday vacation every other year.

FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT But just because you don’t want to do it, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have to get done at all. And, just because it needs to be done, doesn’t mean that you have to do it (that’s the reverse corollary!) Start by sitting down with your family and compare everyone’s “wants” and “don’t wants” for the season. This is the time for a little BARGAINING. If you love baking and shopping for presents but really don’t enjoy decorating the house, see if your spouse or kids have decorating marked as a priority on their lists. At the very least, you might find someone else who feels neutral about a chore that you completely despise! The holidays are an excellent time to learn the fine art of NEGOTIATING! And if you decide as a group that you really do want something done but no one wants to do it, consider HIRING someone else to do it for you. If you like having the house decorated but hate putting up lights and garland, find a florist or interior designer that can take on that particular chore. The same is true of many holiday “obligations.” If you don’t like cooking, have your holiday meal catered or buy a pre-cooked meal from the local deli or eat out. If you love giving goodies to friends but don’t have time to bake, buy “homemade” cookies from the local bakery. Have a housekeeper give your home a good cleaning before your out-of-town guests arrive. In this age of convenience and SERVICE-ORIENTED businesses, I guarantee that

you can find someone who is willing to do almost anything for a fee!

DON’T MAKE IT A CHORE Unfortunately, many of us have turned the holiday season into just one more chore to be tackled. It’s as though the holidays have been transformed into an intensified “to-do list” – baking, shopping, wrapping, visiting - no wonder the holidays stress people out so badly! But it doesn’t have to be that way – it’s all about PERSPECTIVE. Do you remember when you were a kid and one of your parents introduced you to the “clean up your room” game? Maybe you rushed around trying to see how quickly you could get everything put away – or perhaps you sang and danced while you straightened up. Cleaning up was fun, until you learned to look at it as a CHORE – something to be tolerated, something that “had” to be done but wasn’t in any way enjoyable. Holiday tasks are the same way. At our house, we turn every holiday “chore” into a PARTY. We have a house decorating party, where we invite our friends to help out, put on some Christmas music, and give everyone spiked eggnog. We take our holiday cards to the local Starbucks and spend a very pleasant afternoon listening to carols, drinking hot cocoa, and chatting as we write out our holiday greetings. We even make gift-wrapping fun (my husband and I compete to see who can get their gifts wrapped the fastest – just like when we were 6 years old!) The point is, you can make anything FUN, if you create the right mood and the right frame of mind. So think about how you can put a cheery spin on at least one “chore” this year – you might be surprised what a good time you have!

LOWER THE BAR In a world where we seem to think that perfection can be attained if we just work hard enough, we often feel a tremendous pressure to outdo ourselves during the holidays. Each year, we want to buy more gifts (or more expensive gifts) than last year, to host the most elaborate party of the season, to make the house look more festive than any other on the block. And in the process of trying to OUTDO everyone else in the world, we end up missing out on the real meaning of the holidays. We no longer have time to spend with our loved ones, because we are on an insane quest to create the PERFECT holiday.

SET YOUR PRIORITIES This year, why not be a little bit REALISTIC about your holiday? Accept right from the start that things may not go perfectly – and the harder you try to mold your holidays exactly as you had planned, the less likely they are to cooperate. And quite frankly, sometimes less is more. Instead of attending a different party full of strangers every night, why not pick two or three gatherings where you will be surrounded by people you love? Rather than planning a seven-course meal serving 75 people, wouldn’t a small potluck dinner with your 10 best friends mean more to you? Do you really need to buy dozens of gifts for your kids, or would they be happy with just a few things they really wanted? Maybe this year, it’s time to focus on the QUALITY of your experiences instead of the QUANTITY. Coaching: Achievement, Fulfillment and Purpose

Fitness & Beauty

ESEA SKINCARE Brings Fitness Into the Mix in Historic Roseville ESEA, LLC is Sacramento’s only

skincare clinic and yoga studio at its original location in East Sacramento, ESEA Skincare and Salon, has now ventured into the fitness business. The ESEA Group recently took over the Roseville site formerly known as Fitness 180 in September and is revamping the 8500 square foot historic building originated in 1890. The new business is called ESEA Fitness Spa. The fitness club is located at the corner of Washington and Church Street in historic Roseville. There plan is to create a unique, upscale fitness and wellness center using state-of-theart technology and modalities that will include skincare, yoga, massage, tanning, and, of course a gym with personal training.

he word “Coaching” has been used for many years in the sports field. The athletic coach is considered to be the expert that guides and directs the behaviors and abilities of the individuals of the team. Coaching has branched into personal coaching where the coach may specialize in specific areas such as selfdevelopment, retirement, financial and health just to name a few. Coaching helps people by directing, instructing and training with the aim to achieve goals or develop specific skills.

T

Government bodies have not found it necessary to provide a regulatory standard for life coaching, nor does

any state body govern the education or training standard for the life coaching industry; the title of “coach” can be used by any service provider. Since there are many coaching schools and training programs available for certification or credential sometimes causing confusion, it is important to determine what type of coach you want to become. Consider the method you want to use to direct, instruct or train your clients to fulfil their goals. Or if you are a client considering coaching, determine what you want to accomplish by using a coach.

Medical Options to Boost Your Weight Loss

S

taying trim, or worse yet, losing weight becomes more difficult as you age. This uncomfortable realization sneaks up on many people balancing busy lives. Over time, weight just accumulates and becomes either something easily ignored, or just too difficult to manage. The slow process of diet and exercise generates proven results for everyone, but at a different pace for each individual. People often lose motivation when results are just a few weeks away. The Midtown Health & Wellness Center, located at the “Medical on J Building” on 3701 J Street, has an answer for those of you struggling to reach your physical goals. They offer a comprehensive approach to health, weight loss and aging; including prescription assistance specifically for weight loss, as well as hormone replacement for aging. If diet and exercise haven’t been enough for you in the past, a little medical intervention will. They offer a three-phase, physician-supervised weight loss program. Dr. Helene Malabed, D.O. prescribes your weight loss plan based on your goals, current health status, and medical history.

Prescription Drug Help “We recognize that in certain cases, diet and exercise are not enough. Many people need something to boost them along in the weight loss process to help get them started,” said Mike Silva, Co-Owner. “There are effective prescription drugs used for weight loss that may be prescribed at Midtown Health and Wellness if you meet the criteria.” The medication won’t replace your need to cut back on calories. You’ll still eat a high protein, very low carbohydrate diet that is medically monitored every week. The Center has weight loss products available to help you – protein shakes, antioxidants, vitamins, meal replacement shakes and power bars that meet the dietary guidelines.

Customized Exercise Programs “We work with several gyms and personal trainers that take customization of an exercise plan to a whole new level. Each of the partners has extensive background in a variety of different forms of exercise and fitness levels, including trainers that we feel will be best suited for each individual client,” said Ian Dixon, Co-Owner.

“Fitness is not only important for a healthy lifestyle, it is also a major contributor for personal success. A person that works to achieve fitness will also gain the confidence it takes to succeed in everyday life.” – Jay Bridges “We take a comprehensive view of weight loss,” Dr. Malabed said. “With a program designed by experts in medicine, nutrition, fitness, motivation and education, you can’t help but win this time around with your health goals.” “Fitness is not only important for a healthy lifestyle, it is also a major contributor for personal success. A person that works to achieve fitness will also gain the confidence it takes to succeed in everyday life. This is why I am so excited that Midtown Health & Wellness Center offers our clients the tools necessary to help obtain their fitness goals and ultimately, their dreams,” said Jay Bridges.

Phase 1 – Let’s Evaluate What’s Happening The program at the Midtown Health & Wellness Center starts with Phase 1, Acute Weight Loss. During this phase, you’ll have an initial consultation to evaluate your current health. This includes a comprehensive blood panel, blood pressure reading, EKG, weight and body fat index and individualized consultation with our Wellness Team to determine your goals. After this consultation, Dr. Malabed meets with you on a weekly basis.

Phase 2 – You’ve Graduated and Lost Your Weight! After meeting your weight loss goal, you transition to Phase II, Short Term

Maintenance. This is when the step-by-step assistance will help you increase your daily caloric level to maintain your weight and also learn tools and techniques to break down obstacles you’ve suffered in the past.

Phase 3 – Let’s Get You to Optimum Health In the Phase III, Wellness Phase, you can address other health goals and issues through the Center’s ongoing support and resources. This includes the possibility that your hormones levels may be out of balance.

Why You Can’t Break Out From Where You’re At Suzanne Sommers has it right. If your hormones are out of balance, nothing can be right with your health. Your weight is off. Your moods are off. Your sleep cycle is off. Your thinking is off. You age faster and are more susceptible to cancer. Male or female, hormones rule your life and just by getting them back into balance, you can regain your true personality and inner fit and healthy self. The fact is that instead of thinking that as you age, your hormones decline, consider that your hormones that are declining could be the cause of your aging. By monitoring and replacing your own hormones, you can feel and look younger and healthier.

Dr. Helene Malabed, D.O. of Midtown Health & Wellness Center couldn’t agree more. “Your medical history and lab tests provide solutions to why you can’t lose weight, why you’re aging fast, why you are fatigued and moody and why you’re losing muscle mass as you age.” That’s why she’ll help women adjust estrogen/progesterone levels with natural bio-identical hormones and help men adjust failing testosterone levels with injectable HGH. For men, the testosterone levels are the greatest factor in male aging. Replacing human growth hormone with medical grade HGH versus some “bootlegged” versions from China that are questionable as far as safety, as well as illegal, will do four things: Make you increase muscle mass making you look stronger and thinner. Make you less susceptible to heart disease, diabetes, stroke & depression. Regain your vitality & active sex life. Decrease visible fine lines & wrinkles.

Anti-Aging Resources

for weight loss but also for anti-aging. “Our inside-out approach to beauty and wellness includes natural hormones, supplements, diet and exercise.” The Center uses prescription, medicalgrade Obagi skin care products that work at the cellular level to regenerate younger, beautiful-looking skin. Obagi is considered top of the line in the skin care and beauty field.

High-Tech Twitter and Facebook Contact “To give you what you need, we realize that medicine has to stay up with the times. That’s why we’re already on Facebook (MidtownHealthWellnessCenter) and Twitter (SacWellness). We provide daily tips to all our fans (and clients) so we encourage everyone to take part and follow us towards good health,” Silva said. Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers! Told by neurologists you’ll have to take medication for pain the rest of your life, and you will get worse? I urge you to get a second opinion!

H

i, my name is Dr. Wayne Pack, D.C. In 2006, I developed peripheral neuropathy. I experienced severe pain in my feet and toes. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else, and there were times when I wished they did belong to someone else. I was also having difficulty with my balance and coordination. After some time, I was examined by two local Sacramento neurologists. They both confirmed that I was suffering with peripheral neuropathy. They told me three things: 1) there was nothing that could be done for it 2) I would just have to take medication to relieve the pain 3) my condition would get worse and in all probability, I would end up with a cane or walker, and I might become unable to walk. As a die hard golfer and skier, I was devastated. I accepted their diagnosis, but not their forecast for my future. Shortly thereafter, I started exhaustive research on the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. My research led me to a group of medical and chiropractic neurologists in Europe who have helped thousands of peripheral neuropathy sufferers get their lives back. Their work has been introduced to doctors in the United States under the name, “The Neuropathy Centers of America.” I am happy to say that I am a proud member of this group of doctors.

By applying their treatment protocols, my legs and feet now function normally without pain, or numbness and I no longer experience a loss of balance or coordination. I have now been treating peripheral neuropathy patients successfully for over two years. And yes, I am now playing golf again, and I expect to go skiing as soon as the good Lord sends a little more snow. What is Peripheral Neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which there is a loss of communication between the brain, and the spinal cord, and the periphery (chiefly, the feet and legs, and in some cases, the hands and arms) where the many bizarre, painful, symptoms peripheral neuropathy usually occur. In order to gain more permanent relief in peripheral neuropathy, normal function must be restored between the brain, the spinal cord, & the periphery (the feet, legs, hands & arms). How We Restore Normal Function! First we use an Federal Drug Administration approved 51K Neuromuscular 1000 Electronic Stimulator, the NeuroCare. It is able to recruit more muscle fibers via high voltage without discomfort due to the low amperage. This new treatment is designed to help people suffering with peripheral and diabetic neuropathy. It is causing excitement in the medical community for more info, go to www.neurocare.com. The NeuroCare Muscle Stimulator! 1) Increases circulation 2) Improves the condition of muscle wasting away from disuse 3) Reduces the swelling in the feet (edema)

4) Lowers blood sugar levels 5) Lowers blood pressure 6) Helps heal wounds that have not healed with “conventional” treatment 7) Stops and/or reduce pain and help restore normal feeling in the feet and legs. In addition, we use oxygen with exercise therapy (OWET), vibration therapy to enhance individual cellular function, revolutionary, researched, auditory stimulation scientifically proven to balance the hemispheres of the brain, spinal manipulation, and intersegmental traction of the spine. We also support the nervous system with advanced, metabolic nutrition designed to give our patients every chance to get well by healing from the inside. Methods Of Coaching There are many ways to coach, many types of coaching and many methods to coaching. Sessions are usually one-on-one either in-person or over the telephone. A coach provides a professional ongoing partnership designed to help clients determine goals; generate solutions and strategies to produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Most coaches focus on identifying opportunity for development based on individual strengths and capabilities thereby helping clients improve performance and enhance the quality of their lives.

that you don’t want to be doing or feeling. Once you have established what you want to change, make a list of what you would like to accomplish. Some of the typical reasons someone might want to work with a coach are as follows: wanting to stretch personally or professionally to a higher level; needs more knowledge, skills or confidence; wants results faster; lacks purpose and desire fulfillment; work and life is out of balance; or you need

to identify your strengths and how most effectively to leverage them for further success. Since coaching is a partnership, also ask yourself if you find it valuable to have another viewpoint and to be asked to consider new perspectives. Also, ask yourself if you are ready to make real changes in your work or life. If the answer to these questions is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way for you to increase self-confidence,

achieve goals, success, fulfillment and purpose in life. Ronda Degaust is the author of How To Heal from Years of Criticism, Insults, Abuse & Rejection. Coaches certified in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) focus on these standard coaching methods and also help the client determine and eliminate emotional barriers that prevent them from accomplishing their goals. NLP is based on the ‘how-to’ psychology, although not therapy, and is modeled from many of the great therapists of all time. Coaches using these processes have extra tools to assist their clients in gaining a new perspective on life by helping them heal from past traumas, hurts while gaining a sense of purpose.

How Can You Determine If Coaching Is Right For You? To determine if you could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what is not working in your life first. For example: what are you doing or feeling

“Top 3 Must Dos” Before The New Year

W

hat’s the best present you could give yourself this December? Sure, you’d like that sparkling diamond ring you saw at the local jeweler or the new iPhone. But put material things aside for a moment. How about devoting one hour to “3 Must Dos” that will bring closure to the year and give you clarity for the New Year? That’s one hour to reflect on the past year as you celebrate your successes, face your losses and set your top goal for the New Year. It’s a great gift. Grab it! Use these “Top 3 Must Dos” to close out the past year and stand on solid ground in anticipation of the New Year. 1. Celebrate your success. A lot happened over the past 12 months. But you may find as you jump from one project to the next that it’s hard to remember your wins along the way. “People are always succeeding,” says Certified NLP Practioner Sharon McGraham. “The question is: At what?” When you take action, you get results. That’s why it’s important to see the through line of the entire year. What small steps led to larger successes? Before New Year’s Eve, jot down all the wins you’ve accomplished this year. Focus on one month at a time. Capture big and small things alike from your personal and professional lives. Did you get a promotion this year? Move to a great new home? Did you lend a hand on an important project? Review your success. Then own it. “Take in success,” McGraham says. “Experience it. Know what it feels like to be succeeding so that when success comes around again

you’ll know. Otherwise, what’s the point?” Make this year the time when you revel in your success. Use it as a foundation to build upon. 2. Face your losses. What didn’t go the way you had planned this year? Where did you fail? What setbacks did you experience? Facing your losses will allow you to put them behind you. For example, Ronald, a real estate investor, got hit hard financially when his home sold for below its market value. Instead of losing sleep over it, he faced the situation and has set goals for the New Year to diversify his investments. If you don’t acknowledge the “pains” in your life, you will have little room to correct your course. Create solutions to help you grow and prevent the same mistakes the following year. McGraham explains that failure also offers feedback. “Let it change you,” she says. “Pay attention to the feedback you’re getting so that you can guide yourself to the next thing. Ask yourself: what did I want to accomplish? Maybe I missed the target. Regroup. Where am I now and what’s next? What did I want to have happen? Make it conscious.” There’s no need to brush mistakes under the rug. Let your setbacks form the goals you want to set for the New Year. Learn from them. That’s how you grow. 3. Set your top goal for the New Year. If you could accomplish something meaningful in the New Year that would

thrill you to no end, what would it be? Just one goal! That’s right. Think about what would bring you alive each morning, what would get you engaged and excited about life? Is it to take a family trip to Hawaii? To get that big promotion you’ve applied for? To simplify your life and work only four days a week? Brainstorm a list of ideas first; then pick your top goal. Like a rubber band stretched between two fingers, the goal should have the right mix of tension and flexibility. Put enough stretch in your goal to make it enticing yet with a touch of slack to make it doable. Then get specific. Be sure you know what you’ll do by when. For example: To take a family trip to Hawaii by June 30, 2008. Post your top goal in a visible area. Now you have something to look forward to! Tackle these “Top 3 Must Dos” right away--it only takes an hour--or make an appointment with yourself in your calendar by December 31. By celebrating your successes, facing your losses and setting your top goal for the New Year, you are giving yourself a great gift: one of completion and inspiration. Happy New Year! Celebrate! Scout Oath

“On my honor I will do my best
to do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
to help other people at all times;
to keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.”

Boy Scouts Celebrate Their 100th Year for a Reason: They’re Top Notch

B

eing alone is not healthy. It’s the nature of man to be social and seek out human companionship. When we’re down, a friend lifts us up. When we need a different viewpoint, a friend eagerly provides it. When our friends need to consult with someone for the truth, we’re there for them; a win-win for both. There’s nothing that having a good friend can’t solve. “The Boy Scouts of America go beyond the purpose of friendship,” Chuck Elton, Midway Coordinator for the Boy Scouts Event in Sacramento said. “Boy scout leaders teach boys to do their best, think ahead to be prepared, do a good turn daily, volunteer in the community, and always look for improvement.” It’s because of this that the Boy Scouts is one of the finest organizations that any youth can become associated with. It’s also one of the best ways to learn camping, outdoor skills, backpacking, and more importantly leadership and decision making skills. And did you know that of the 111th Congress, 211 members were involved in scouting as a scout or adult volunteer. The leadership skills they learned in scouting are precious in life. “To know a scout is to know you will find a well-mannered, upright person with high ideals and someone who

places God first in his life. From this, only good can follow” Chuck said. History of Scouting The Boy Scouts of America started on Feb. 8, 1910. Among the original founders were President William Howard Taft and President Theodore Roosevelt. Their first annual meeting was held at the White House. The scouts’ first treeplanting project was held in New York in 1914 and the following year, 57 merit badges were proposed and issued. By 1949, the scouts had grown to 543 councils and had 831 campsites. They collected 20 million pounds of rubber in 2 weeks in the same year, distributed pledge cards for war bonds and savings stamps, started the nation’s first recycling of aluminum, paper and salvage, assisted emergency medical units and served as fire watchers. By 1965, the 500,000th Eagle Scout was honored and the 40 millionth member registered. In 1969, girls joined as Explorers simply because they didn’t want to miss out on the opportunities that were available. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, boy scouts became the backbone of America, collecting litter to beautify the land and feeding the hungry with more than 60 million food items in a food drive. Scouts made $5.6 million worth of improvements to the nation.

This year, the 2 millionth Eagle Scout, Anthony Thomas was honored.

Rotary Clubs, fire departments, and parent-teacher associations.

The 100th anniversary celebration kickoff for boy scouts in the state of California was celebrated on Oct. 24th at Raley Field and almost 7,000 attended. The air was filled with the boys’ raw passion, electrifying energy and zest for life. True to their oath, scouts even assisted vendors haul items to and from their booths as well as helping to clean up the field.

At the heart of every scout is not only a heart to help but also a sense of honor, two things you just don’t find in people by accident. The organization’s mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices throughout life by instilling in them values that every parent wants their children to have: to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Scouting is accessible to every boy through Cub Packs, Troops, Teams, as well as Venturing (young women as well), meeting locally at churches, the Moose, Lions and Elks clubs, community centers, private schools, nonprofit agencies, Kiwanis and

It’s the kind of values every mom and dad want their child to have. To join the boy scouts, see www.gecbsa.org

In a nutshell: Bear with me as I explain this term. People, otherwise healthy and without any underlying health troubles they are aware of, celebrate a holiday, usually Christmas. They are under a little Holiday stress and have a few “or more” drinks. What happens next is that the alcohol stimulates the heart to go into an abnormal heart rhythm. The most common situation is Atrial Fibrillation. Most people worry about putting on a couple of pounds over the Holidays, but in addition they should be concerned about what they are doing to their heart. Holiday Heart cases spike every Christmas and New Years; emergency rooms see patients with symptoms of palpitations and light-headedness. Further evaluation usually confirms the patient has an abnormal heart rhythm, often Atrial Fibrillation. Alcohol consumption can cause significant cardiac toxicity and these partiers usually have spent the weekend drinking. Most often they are college kids who are otherwise healthy. As you rush from one holiday party to the next, it’s easy to overindulge in food and booze. (Yes, that includes beer and wine) Fortunately Holiday Heart Atrial fibrillation usually resolves itself within 24 hours. But if not, the doctor will admit you to the hospital, give you medication to slow down the heart rate and watch you until your heart rate returns to a normal sinus rhythm. In some cases an electric SHOCK is required to jolt your heart back into the proper rhythm. What a fun and relaxing way to spend the holidays. Holiday Heart Syndrome can also occur in people who drink little or no alcohol, but then go on alcohol binge or drink in excess during the holidays. Holiday Heart studies indicate death rates from heart attacks and stroke spike during the holiday season. Atrial fibril-

lation is the most common arrhythmia in holiday heart syndrome and believe me it is a real harrowing and NOT FUN experience. Research has suggested that as many as 65% of all Arrhythmias found in individuals under age 65 are a variation of Holiday Heart Syndrome. Cardiologists are warning partygoers that Holiday Heart Syndrome sufferers often feel palpitations or extra heart beats, like your heart is beating funny or kind of flopping in your chest. Most cases of Holiday Heart start as “Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation,” that is, Atrial Fibrillation that starts suddenly, and after a time, stops suddenly. Watch your alcohol intake during the holidays; it’s just not worth it! Doctors have found people experiencing the Holiday Heart Syndrome most often appear at the emergency room during the holiday party season and graduation time. And with holiday tension and stress, your heart is already working overtime. The holiday season can be heartwarming; it can also cause heart problems. Binge drinking at holiday parties is a bad idea - period. Anything that can cause disruption of the heart’s normal rhythm “IS TO BE AVOIDED!!” It is estimated that as a many as 35% of cases with heart problems in the emergency room are attributed to Holiday Heart Syndrome. Holiday Heart Syndrome is seldom life-threatening, but it IS very scary and I do mean scary - like - “I think I’m dying scary.” Who is most at risk? Men more than women. It’s pretty hard to predict who will have an abnormal heart rhythm, but we know alcohol itself can stimulate the heart by reacting with or inflaming nerve pathways to cause all kinds of flipflops and irregular beats.

holidays By Steve Ingram

When should you seek treatment? Most cases of Holiday Heartcaused Atrial fibrillation start suddenly, and after a time, stop on their own. Alcohol is a known trigger that produces Atrial Fibrillation if ingested in large quantities, even in “normal” individuals. Up to 60% of patients who engage in heavy binge drinking will develop episodes of Atrial fibrillation. In some individuals sensitive to alcohol, two or three drinks, and sometimes a single drink - can trigger episodes of Atrial fibrillation. Just be aware if your heart beats wildly for more than just minutes, certainly up to hours and it doesn’t calm down. Recognize that you might have been drinking more alcohol than usual. Especially if you are short of breath, get checked out by your regular doctor or get to the emergency room. How can you prevent it? With moderation, using judgment, and certainly by recognizing if you’ve had a couple of drinks of alcohol. We say from your heart’s point of view, you really don’t have a lot to gain by drinking more and maybe a lot to lose. Not-so-happy holidays. Yes, you can party like a mad man/ woman and get away with no ill effects other than a headache. But if you have a bout of Holiday Heart (Atrial Fibrillation) it WILL get your attention and there is the possibility the “A-fib” will NOT resolve itself... Have a Happy Holiday and a Merry Christmas and do your heart a favor and don’t drink in excess. I can tell you – IT AIN’T WORTH IT! For more information on The Holiday Heart Syndrome check out my site at: www.afibtreatment.com Fellow Atrial Fibrillation Sufferer, Steve Ingram

TheTeacups TrueStory couple took a trip to England to shop in a beautiful antique store to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques and pottery, especially teacups. Spotting an exceptional cup, they asked, “May we see that? We’ve never seen a teacup quite so beautiful.” As the lady handed it to them, suddenly the teacup spoke, “You don’t understand. I have not always been a teacup. There was a time when I was just a lump of red clay. My master took me and rolled me pounded and patted me over and over and I yelled out, “Don’t do that. I don’t like it! Let me alone.” But he only smiled, and gently said; “Not yet!” “Then WHAM! I was placed on a spinning wheel and suddenly I was spun around and around and around. Stop it! I’m getting so dizzy! I’m going to be sick,” I screamed. But the master only nodded and said quietly; “Not yet.” He spun me and poked and prodded and bent me out of shape to suit himself and then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I yelled and knocked and pounded at the door. “Help! Get me out of here!” I could see him through the opening and I could read his lips as he shook his head from side to side, “Not yet.” When I thought I couldn’t bear it another minute, the door opened. He carefully took me out and put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. Oh,

that felt so good! Much better, I thought. But after I cooled, he picked me up and he brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. ‘Oh, please, Stop it, Stop,” I cried.

Do you have a question for the Top Dog? Email editor@healthfitness.us

Top Dog

Buck Column L

et’s find out some of the traditions that K9 Officer Buck of the Sacramento Police Department will be observing for the holidays this year.

Q: Officer Randy, tell us about what Buck will be doing for the holidays.

A: Buck is a bit of a family dog. He loves being around the whole family and all our visitors at the holidays. Buck takes pleasure on Thanksgiving and Christmas just hanging out under the dinner table and listening to everyone talk and eat. Occasionally he’ll get lucky and grab up a tasty treat that one of the kids drops. Q: What happens in your house on Christmas Eve?

A: Buck will be standing guard at the chimney waiting for Santa to arrive. His job is to alert us as soon as Santa’s sleigh hits the roof but last year Santa was so quiet that we all slept through the night. The year before that, he wouldn’t let Santa down the chimney! Q: What happens Christmas morning? A: On Christmas morning Buck is up at his normal 6a.m. and ready to eat breakfast. He gets a special can of “wet food” with his normal dry food for Christmas. Buck will sit there while we all open presents. His other dog friend, Maggie, loves to steal wrapping and tissue paper and run around so of course, Buck feels like he must chase her! He does knock ornaments off all the time with his long tail when he tries to wedge behind it to sleep.

Q: What type of presents is Buck used

Q: And what is on Buck’s wish list

A: Buck has his own stocking that is filled with his favorite dog biscuits.

A: This year Buck wants a new soft bed to sleep on and some tasty soft dog treats. Buck has been a very good boy this year. He has worked hard and played hard and is ready to relax and enjoy a visit from Santa!

Could Your Dog Have

Arthritis?

– She gains weight – She does not show interest in playing activities – Attitude or behavior changes – He is more lazy and less alert

A

rthritis is not a rare disease now and you must have heard a lot about it. What you may not have heard that often though is that arthritis, which strikes adults as well as children of all ages, is not restricted to human beings only. In fact many animals including dogs get arthritis. There are over a hundred different forms of arthritis, the most common being osteoarthritis which is a degenerative joint disease. If you are a dog-owner, you should take special notice that not only does your dog take his heartworm medicine

and maintains a healthy diet but he is also playful and greets you with a wagging tail when you return home after an exhausting day at the office. Being active can greatly differentiate between a dog who has arthritis and one that doesn’t. Even a dog that has arthritis and does regular exercise can actually prevent future arthritis attacks. However, a dog’s owner would have to keep his arthritis-affected dog’s activity to a minimum.

What Will Happen at the Vet

If you see changes in your pet’s mood or its activity, or if your dog doesn’t feel a hundred percent, you may think it’s a cold or maybe a stomach virus – but beware; it could be arthritis. Statistics show that arthritis affects one in every five adult dogs in the U.S. and is one of the most common cases that veterinarians have to deal with. Identifying arthritis is not that difficult if you are alert and notice changes in your pet’s behavior. Obviously if your dog is feeling pain he can’t say anything to you so you will have to note subtle changes in his activities as well. Here’s a list of some of the signs that can suggest that your dog may have arthritis: – If your dog is favoring a limb and not using a particular limb – Your pet has difficulty sitting or standing – She tends to sleep more

$3 off Grooming (exp 01/15/10) 15% off Pet Supplies (exp 01/15/10)

– He seems to have stiff or sore joints – He hesitates in jumping, running or climbing stairs

If your dog shows any of these symptoms regularly then it is time you go to a good veterinarian for an arthritis evaluation. This evaluation will involve a physical exam and even X-rays. Treating your dog’s arthritis is pretty much the same as treating osteoarthritis in human beings. Therapies may include a healthy diet and regular exercise to help maintain proper weight. It is important that you work with your veterinarian to find a pain killer that is suitable for your pet and also helps relieve the pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, better known as NSAIDS, are the most common form of pharmaceutical treatment for arthritis in dogs. Your veterinarian may choose to give either an NSAID or another common drug used for treating arthritis that together may help decrease pain and disease progression. Never give your pet medication that is made for human beings without referring to your veterinarian first. Some medicines can be toxic to dogs – most notably acetaminophen & ibuprofen – & you should also keep in mind the breed of your dog since a safe dose will differ between a greyhound & a dachshund. No matter what plan of action you take to treat your dog’s arthritis, make sure you get professional help through a vet so that you choose a program that is most suitable for your best friend.

Dog Wanted Flying Angels Help Dogs Escape Death

T

hroughout the year and especially during the holidays, getting a dog you always wanted is a consideration of many across the country looking for that special family gift or individual companionship. Of course, taking on the responsibility of pet ownership should not be taken lightly, especially if you have never owned a pet before. Pet stores are convenient ways of fulfilling this need, but can be distribution points for many Puppy Mills, which are undesirable “for profit breeding facilities”. A more rewarding experience may be to adopt an animal that has been abandoned in one of the many kill shelters across the country. These animals are in dire need of attention as many will die if not targeted for adoption.

If you are considering adding a pet to your family, and have wanted a dog , consider saving an animal from a kill shelter by using a service like these. The service they provide is a very special and heartwarming to all dog lovers. Millions of people who own dogs know the benefits of having a happy dog as part of the family. Dogs have been domesticated for a very long time and whether they are working dogs, or the family pet that snoozes by the fire on snowy days, they are welcome additions to the family. Do you research before taking the final step toward dog ownership.

As animals are abandoned throughout the country, many perish at local shelters due to overcrowding and associated housing costs. However, there are organizations that have stepped in to provide a valuable service to assist in the rescue of some of these poor animals as they face certain death. PilotsNpaws.org and Animalrescueflights.org are two such groups consisting of caring pilots who transport animals to different parts of the country where would be pet owners are ready and willing to take on the special cargo. These “Flying Angels” provide an alternative to transporting by ground, which could include 8-10 transfers, if the destination spans a few hundred miles. The logistics to get the animal to its destination can be fairly complex: Once an animal is able to be adopted, a request for transport is posted on an established forum board. Pilots review the requests to see if there is a match and will reply if able to assist in the transport. Once a transport request is matched, considerable planning takes place to coordinate the logistics of getting the animal and carrier together. Some transports may need more than one pilot transfer if the distance is more than a couple of hundred miles. Many of these planes typically are limited by fuel capacity and can only travel a relatively short distance. Based on the website, pilots who consider participating in this group may have to endure many undesirable situations such as yelping and cage accidents as these animals are not used to plane noises and altitudes. But those who do participate have written how rewarding it can be to contribute to the cause of saving a small life that would otherwise be lost. December Edition 2009

Keeping Fido Safe During the Holidays

Tfriends and fun. Regardless of

he holidays are a time of family,

your beliefs, the holidays are a special time of the year. But parties, family get-togethers, and unexpected guests can bring both fun and stress. Not only for your family, but also for your four legged friends as well. With the excitement of seeing old friends and planning activities, it’s easy to lose track of the dangers lurking in holiday decorations and foods for your furry friends.

Foods The holidays are a time for food. But remember some foods are dangerous for your pets. Turkey and chicken bones can splinter when chewed, getting logged in the animal’s throat or stomach linings. Suggestion: Don’t let your dog have scraps from the table. Be sure foods are kept out of reach of your pet or supervised. Chocolate contains alkaloid theobromine, which can poison a dog’s system. Too much chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, hyperactivity, and seizures in your beloved pet. Suggestion: Keep candies on high shelves or counters to keep them out of reach of your pets. Garbage cans also contain dangerous items that have food residual on them, making the trash more of a temptation to your pet. Aluminum foil, paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, and plastic wraps are some of the things that can be hazardous to your pets.

Suggestion: Use a sturdy trashcan with a lid that can be fastened shut and make sure it’s closed after every use. Empty it often so it doesn’t overflow.

Christmas Trees Live trees are festive and beautiful when decorated and lit with lights. But remember most Christmas trees sold can be hazardous. The sap is mildly toxic, causing mouth and stomach irritation. The needles can puncture intestines because they cannot be digested. Suggestion: Place the tree into a room that can be closed off from your dogs, or place a protective fence around it. Use a sturdy tree stand, one that is designed to keep the tree upright. Most tinsel is made out of Mylar or other plastic products and can cause intestinal obstruction, internal cuts and abrasions if eaten. Ornaments are made of glass, thin plastic and usually have wire hangers, all of which is very dangerous for your furry friend should he try to eat one, or knock the tree down and break the ornaments.

the connecting cord is underneath a tree skirt and runs behind furniture.

enough so your dog can’t reach them. And never leave a lit candle unattended!

Presents under the tree are also very hazardous. Ribbon, wrapping paper, and even the gift inside, can cause problems for your dog, should he chew the present open. Dogs sometimes don’t realize what they are chewing on isn’t edible until they’ve swallowed some of it.

Potpourri smells wonderful and helps to keep your home fresh during the busy holidays. Most potpourris are made with toxic berries and plant parts, which can cause skin rashes if your dog gets it on his skin or stomach problems if he eats any of it.

Suggestion: When wrapping presents, keep your dogs out of the room and be sure to throw all trash away immediately. Use a fence around the tree to keep the dogs away from presents. Flocking and artificial snow can cause digestive problems if swallowed and respiratory problems if inhaled. Since it’s a new scent to your dog, you’re almost guaranteed Fido will be curious and sniffing the tree.

Suggestion: Use delicate ornaments on the upper branches of the tree, and sturdier, plastic ones on the bottom branches. Instead of wire hangers try using ribbons to hang the ornaments on the tree.

Suggestion: If you have dogs, don’t get a flocked tree. If you want to use artificial snow, only spray it on the upper parts of windows or just on the outside.

Lighting can entangle a dog, making a tree falling disaster a reality. Dogs can get tangled up in the lights, pulling the tree down on top of them.

Candles are beautiful and festive, but pose a threat to dogs. Curiosities can get the better of them, resulting in burns as well as possible fire hazards if they knock the candle over.

Suggestion: Run strings from the inside of the tree to the outside, making sure

Home Decorations

Suggestion: Use lit candles only in places your dog doesn’t go, or up high

Suggestion: Use in rooms your dog doesn’t go into, or keep out of reach on a high shelf. Poinsettias, mistletoe and Christmas cactus are all beautiful live decorations to enhance your home’s appearance. But a lot of holiday plants are toxic when eaten, causing illness and possibly death to pets. Suggestion: Try spraying the plants with a dog repellant like Bitter Apple. Be sure to discard the dead leaves and berries immediately. The holidays should be a time of fun and happiness, not spent in the vet emergency room. By taking some time to make your home safe, you can guarantee having a wonderful holiday.

Pet Disaster Kits: They Fill More Needs Than Just For Disasters

Y

ou might say that you don’t need a Pet Disaster Kit for your dog and that you’re not “way out there” thinking that the world is going to end and a disaster could happen at any moment.

Well, that’s fine but did you know that a Pet Disaster Kit isn’t just for emergencies? It’s something to throw into the car trunk when you’re off on a camping weekend or snowboarding weekend. That way IF something happens, you’ll be prepared. A pet disaster kit is something to throw in the car when you get an unexpected phone call from the family in another state saying that Mom isn’t expected to make it through the next week. That’s when you pack up the family, including Max, your lab retriever and you spend time with her. Mom always loved Max who could do miracles to get her laugh. A pet disaster kit is for the time when there are news announcements on TV report ing that flooding is expected; start preparing to evacuate. You really don’t want to leave Fido behind, do you? However, what are the chances that you’ll remember to pack his food, water dish, pet first aid kit, tracking device and other items for his health and safety? How can you look into his eyes and tell him that you forgot his food? You know he understands every word you say. A pet disaster kit specially customized for him is an easy item to grab and get out in the nick of time before the floods strike. And a pet disaster kit is something that even can be used as a school fund raiser and sure beats the five dozen brownies you’d have to bake for the next bake sale. We contacted www.SafetyCityStore.com for several reasons. They are one of the top disaster preparedness kit sites on the net and have the best selection for items that go in the kits. You can customize your own kit based on what you need. They do offer suggestions as well.

Here’s what was in our Pet Disaster Kit from Safety City Store (and by the way, the two kits were packed as full as you could get): • Collapsible water bowl with 25 packages of 5-year shelf life drinking water • 5-year shelf life Emergency vacuum-packed dog food rations • 5-year shelf life Emergency food rations for 3 people • 2 pair gloves with a flashlight stuffed inside one pair, batteries • A lighted pet collar for large dogs that lights red and reflects yellow • A pet first aid kit complete with instructions, instant cold compress, hydrogen peroxide first aid antiseptic spray, gauze, OcuFresh Eye Wash, adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, examination gloves, scissors, tweezers, iodine prep pads, insect sting relief, absorbent pads and dressings, and antiseptic hand wipes. • A mini Coleman lantern trcking device for dogs • 60 inch lighted leash that lights red and reflects yellow • AM/FM mini radio that fits in the palm of your hand with batteries • 4-12 hour light sticks, “Help” distress banner • Three boxes waterproof matches with a whistle • All-in-one First Aid Emergency Kit for humans (bandages, gauze pads, cleansing pads, butterfly closure, Q tips) • Emergency Clear Poncho + Emergency Survival Blanket • 1 pack candles + Foldable type respirator (mask) Let’s say you are out hiking and the roads become impassable due to an earthquake followed by heavy rain. With a kit like this, you simply pull out the clear poncho and use it as a little tent for you and your dog, securing part of it against a rock or tree. You stay warm with the survival blanket, snap the lighted collar and leash on Buddy, strap the respirator on (fungal infections are common after earthquakes), and enjoy the summer rain. After awhile, you turn on the radio to find out what’s the best way to get out. In case Buddy or you get hurt, you are set with your first aid kit. It’s peace of mind that you gain by having these pet disaster (and human disaster) kits. And there’s no substitute for that. Check out www.SafetyCityStore.com and get one for your emergency and nonemergency needs. Or give them a call in San Clemente at 949-481-4259.

30 Pounds in 30 days. Drop 2 sizes in 2 weeks without exercise. Vibrate your way to a slim figure. Shake off 50 pounds of fat with magical shakes. The weight loss industry knows its vulnerable target market intimately - especially when it comes to New Year diets. These innovative marketers are very much aware of the buttons they need to push to get you to part with your hard-earned cash. The two main themes are instant gratification and anything that sounds like an easy, quick fix. Let’s use our common sense. The weight came on over a long period. The bad habits weren’t formed overnight. How can we expect to lose all the ‘bad stuff’ overnight and keep it off for life? If we don’t change our lifestyles, the unwelcome pounds will just

come piling back - and invite a bunch of friends to boot. How many times have you dropped a number of pounds in a short period, only to gain it back with dividends within an even shorter period? Isn’t it time to say: ‘Enough’? Step 2. Use Your New Year’s Diet to Lose Fat, not Water and Muscle It is fairly easy to lose weight. It is much harder to keep it off. If you want to be successful in your weight loss efforts, you need to keep a close watch on your body composition. If you are losing water and muscle, you are not doing your body any favors. In fact, you will be slowing down your metabolism, causing an even greater weight gain headache. If you choose the road of patience, you will be more likely to lose the fat, without putting your metabolism on a go-slow strike in the process. There simply is no way to do this overnight. Your target should be to lose around 2 pounds per week. Use tools such as a skin fold caliper to check that you are in fact losing fat. This can be done at home, but you may get more accurate results at a health club. Step 3. Throw Out the Shakes, Meal Replacements and Starvation Tactics The best diet for life should include a new health style for your whole family. You can’t live on meal replacements or cabbage soup. Your body and mind will never be satisfied with a shake in place of a filling, chewy, delicious, aromatic meal. Meal replacements can never be long-term solutions. They simply put your body into a sort of starvation mode, which is why you simply gain the weight again when the diet is ‘over’. You need a diet and nutrition plan you can maintain for life. continued on next page...

continued from previous page...

Frankly, we have been made to enjoy good food. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, we can and should even feel free to ‘cheat’ from time to time and enjoy a treat, without losing the weight battle. Try not to make food an issue. Teach your kids to prepare food in a healthy low-fat way, and they will never have reason to deprive and punish themselves with starvation diets. We need the aroma, the textures, the beautiful colors and the pleasure of good, healthy food. Make that part of your New Year diet recipe. Step 4. Take Out a Calculator and Learn to Do the Math Perhaps we should stop thinking in terms of a New Year’s diet altogether. If you need to drop 10 or 30 or even 100 pounds, you can do this by simply making a few sums and changing some habits. You will not even feel deprived. Did you know that you could save 22,000 calories and lose around 6 pounds of fat in a year by simply switching from whole milk to skim milk? Or that by reducing your daily mayonnaise habit by one tablespoon daily, you could make another 9 pounds of flab and fat disappear over 12 months? This without taking any other steps. Do some research and find other examples that can easily be incorporated into your new family healthstyle. Get the kids involved and they will soon discover that they only need to make smarter food choices. What can be easier than this? You can even give a prize to the family member who comes up with the most useful New Year diet suggestion. Step 5. Make Family Activity a Fun Part of Every Day If you want to change the size of your butt, you have to drop the ‘but’ and start exercising. There simply is no other choice - you move, and the fat

will start to move. Excuses and inactivity won’t get you into that skin-tight pair of jeans. Don’t have the cash for a gym membership? No problem. There are many affordable fitness equipment tools for home use. Put on some of the best workout music, and get an exercise ball workout going. Or set the kid in you free with an urban rebounder exercise routine. Frankly, you don’t even need to buy any special equipment. How about a brisk walk or a family bike ride daily? Twenty to thirty minutes of activity 5 days a week, will make a huge difference. Your metabolism will be revved up, enabling you to burn fat faster, even while you sleep. Used to saying ‘I just have to look at a piece of pie to gain 5 pounds’? When your metabolism starts to work efficiently, this problem will disappear. You will find that extra pounds begin to look for another host. You can also add workouts with free weights. The extra muscle mass will become like a furnace when it comes to burning calories. Doesn’t this sound like a new year diet recipe for success? Aren’t these 5 common sense steps all doable and affordable? If you need more guidance when it comes to nutrition and a weight loss cardio workout, you can tap into the knowledge of experts who know exactly what you need to do to burn the fat, while you feed the muscle. Isn’t it time to forget about yet another apple cider vinegar diet? Isn’t it time to take the first steps in the direction of a new health style, while putting together your family’s New Year’s diet?
