Boost Your Brain’s Power with Meditation By Laura Hamilton

Your brain is the command center for a variety of functions. From basic motor skills to complex thought and analysis, your brain is a dynamic bio computer. It is even hard at work when you are not; managing processes like heart rate and digestion. Memory, reasoning and emotional responses are all dependent on brain activity. With all this at stake, you want to keep your brain in tip-top shape. In addition to physical exercise and proper nutrition, did you know that meditation could help boost your brain’s power?

The Science Behind It

Most people are aware that meditation provides significant benefits, including better focus and improved mood, but science looks to explain why. Over the past few years a number of research studies were conducted to understand the measurable effects of meditation on the brain. According to researchers at UCLA, meditation actually helps to increase brain size and gray matter. When compared with a control group, scientists found that meditators show significantly larger mass in both the hippocampus (responsible for memory and learning) and the thalamus, which regulates alertness and sleep. Meditators also have increased folding or gyrification within their brains. These folds help the brain process information more quickly and efficiently. A similar study published by researchers from Harvard, Yale and MIT also found that meditation alters the physical size and structure of the brain, particularly the human or cerebral cortex. This region tends to thin as we age, but meditation can help preserve and improve this area. Data from the study suggests 2 CELEBRATING

that meditation can promote cortical neuroplasticity. This means better memory and less “senior moments.”

The Brain is Like a Muscle

If you are looking to keep your brain young and healthy, you need to exercise it. The brain is like a muscle. It needs training and conditioning to boost its power and achieve peak performance. Meditation is your gray matter workout. When you start a new physical exercise program, you start slowly and progressively build. The same goes for starting a brain workout like meditation. Begin with as little as five minutes a day and work your way up. Many people avoid starting a meditation practice, thinking that it requires hours of sitting in the lotus position. In reality you can gain all the benefits of meditation in as little as fifteen minutes a day. Even the famous Dr. Oz says that twelve minutes of daily meditation can help prevent memory loss. Isn’t that worth a few minutes of your time?

Boost your brainpower with this five-minute meditation:

1. Find a quiet place with no distractions. 2. Sit comfortably in a chair, maintaining good posture with your feet firmly on the floor and hands in your lap. 3. Set a timer for five minutes. 4. Close your eyes. 5. Inhale to the count of four and then exhale to the count of four. If any thoughts pop up, let them go and focus on your breath. Keep going until time is up. Your brain will thank you! Laura Hamilton is a Reiki Master, a freelance writer, a project manager, and has spent 25 years studying and teaching spiritual subjects.

HEALTH

Maybe You Really Don’t Have High Blood Pressure Adnan B. Bhatti, M.D.

L

et’s say you take your blood pressure when you’re at home and it’s normal, registering at 110/70 less than 135/85 or 120/80. You do this weekly for a month and you get the same reading every time. You take your blood pressure at the drug store and find the same thing. Obviously there’s no problem so you continue life as usual. And then the time comes for your annual physical for work. To keep your job, you have to pass it with flying colors. Piece of cake, you think to yourself. You’ve been working out, eating well, and keeping your stress level low. When you go in for your physical, what happens seems surreal. Your blood pressure reading skyrockets to 160/100. You watched the numbers rise as the nurse took it so it can’t be wrong.

4 CELEBRATING

“Blood pressure’s too high, Mr. Smith. It’s at the level where you could suffer from a stroke. We’re sending you home with a prescription,” the doctor tells you. High blood pressure? Me? You can’t believe it. And maybe you shouldn’t.

What’s Really Going On? There’s a phenomenon called white coat hypertension that is occurring. It’s a misdiagnosis of hypertension. White coat hypertension can actually be dangerous if the nurse or physician is not keen enough to detect the difference in blood pressure readings between what you get at home and what is found in the doctor’s office. As many as one in four adults have white coat hypertension.

The facts are that at home, you’re relaxed and your blood pressure readings are normal, always below 135/85. At doctors’

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

offices or hospitals, your blood pressure reads high. The problems become serious when you start taking the blood pressure reducing medications. This can lead to low blood pressure, which can culminate in failure of vital organs in your body. The medication will slow down your metabolic rate. The prescription of blood pressure medication to someone who doesn’t need it is a case of medical malpractice waiting to happen. White coat hypertension is occurring from anxiety, technical inaccuracies, recent ingestion of pressor substances, and talking, amongst many other factors. Most likely, you were given some shocking news in the doctor’s office at another time, and your mind is bracing itself for more bad news. Your body responds by raising your blood pressure. If white coat hypertension happens to you, your best option is to explore home hypertension monitoring, which can form the basis of the diagnosis. There are 2 ways to check to see if white coat hypertension exists or not: 1. Check your blood pressure at home. 2. 24 hours Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). ABPM is accurate but people find the device uncomfortable to wear and disruptive of sleep.

What Should Be Considered

If you do have white coat hypertension, make sure your doctor checks your glucose and lipid profiles to see if heart disease is already present. Since white coat hypertension is considered a risk factor for hypertension, make sure your doctor checks other risk factors such as glucose levels to rule out diabetes and lipid profile. Elevation of both can be a risk factor for heart disease.

There’s another aspect to this picture you should consider. Studies indicate that patients with white coat hypertension eventually do develop true hypertension. It’s possible that the white coat hypertension is predicting the future, thus it may be a good idea to start making dietary changes by eating fewer high sodium foods and eating more vegetables rich in potassium. And always rest before you take your blood pressure. Don’t rush.

What To Do Right Now

The official diet recommended by healthcare practitioners is the DASH Diet, “DASH” stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Harvard researchers have found that the DASH Diet works to lower blood pressure in a few months. On DASH, you’ll maintain a healthy weight; get physically active; follow a healthy eating plan, choose and prepare foods with less salt and sodium; quit smoking and drink alcoholic beverages only in moderation. People with uncomplicated WCH should probably not receive medical therapy, but a close follow-up is warranted. If undetected, white coat hypertension can lead to a person being wrongly diagnosed with high blood pressure and receive unnecessary treatment.

Life involves letting go of things that are not in our best interest. For some of us, gluten is not in our best interest.

HEALTH

It’s not that gluten is bad for everyone, but for some of us gluten slowly degenerates our bodies and prevents us from achieving optimum well being. For individuals with Celiac disease, the body slowly attacks itself; when gluten is ingested. With repeated ingestion the body will eventually kill itself.

Letting Go of Gluten By Melanie Weir

‘If I just eat a little, it can’t hurt me right?’ ‘How do I know if gluten is the problem? I need to try to eat it again to see if it really is the problem.’ ‘What if I only eat gluten once a week, or one day a week or on the weekends?’ ‘What if there is something I can do to be able to eat gluten?’ In bargaining, we remain in the past, as we attempt to negotiate our way out of the hurt. This stage can last weeks, months or years.

So just stop eating it. That’s what our doctors tell us. ‘Stop eating gluten and you will get better,” we are told and then we are thrown out into the world with a list of what we can eat and what we can’t eat.

Depression When bargaining doesn’t work and still we are plagued with symptoms, we are dumped back into the empty feelings of loss. While in the midst of depression stage, grief’s intense sadness feels like it will last forever. As a stage, it is not mental illness merely a process of grieving and yes, eventually it will fade.

Letting go of gluten is similar to leaving a toxic relationship. It tastes so delicious, but treats us so poorly. Corinne from ‘Girl with Moxie’ sums it up so well when she states “Gluten is a selfish bastard.” In her words, “I think of gluten as a bad boyfriend… the guy promises he’ll treat me right, but after I let him spend the night… (I’ll) wake up the next morning, all alone, feeling as if a fleet of moving vans ran over me, then shifted into reverse and ran over me again.” ‘Girl with Moxie’ - http://www.girlwithmoxie. com/2012/07/2012-declaration-ofindependence/

Acceptance Don’t confuse the stage of acceptance with being ‘all

In psychology there are 5 stages of grief. We visit each stage when we give up gluten.

Denial The hardest part of letting go of

gluten is remembering what gluten does and its effect. I can name several individuals that once stated they really had no symptoms, ‘I was just anemic, I just have migraine headaches, I just get moody, I just get skin rashes, I just get diarrhea and constipation.’ The list goes on, but the follow up is… but it goes away eventually. This can be considered denial. Denial allows us to survive loss while we are in shock and denial, but denial eventually fades into anger.

Anger Eventually anger comes. 12 years of being

gluten free and five years of watching individuals newly diagnosed with gluten allergies and celiac disease leaves room for thousands of examples. Examples include ‘I hate gluten’ or ‘Why me?’ Sometimes anger is directed toward the self, food, friends, family members or doctors, but always anger is felt. It is a part of the grieving process. Once Anger is felt, it dissipates. As Emily Dickenson writes, “Anger as soon as fed is dead. Tis starving makes it fat.”

right’. This stage involves accepting the reality that gluten free is a way of life and that living gluten free is necessary for optimum well being. It involves understanding that we must learn to live with our new way of life.

The Circle of Grief It’s important to know that the stages of

grief are not in order and that there is no specific pattern of grieving. The circle of grief is complex and involves many twists and turns. Be compassionate with yourself. Who said becoming gluten free was easy? Eventually, acceptance of the need for a gluten free diet is realized and the next part of the journey begins. We being to live again and are once again able to feel joy in our hearts. We cannot change what has been lost, but we can change our future. We can choose to continue to grow & evolve. 5 Ways Baking Soda Will Freshen Up Your House

by Dr. Donna

O

ne of the most relaxing feelings you can have at the end of the day when you get home from work is to walk into your home and get a whiff of freshness.

How fresh does your home smell? Are there any lingering smells? Is the bathroom area pristine with a soft hint of lemon or other floral smell? Is there an odor coming from the carpet in your house? Does anything smell moldy or musky? It’s possible that odors in your home may be emanating from the refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, sink drains, the toilet or the cat litter box. The good news is that all these can be taken care of with one simple remedy that costs less than a dollar – baking soda. Baking soda has long been used as a cleaner of hundreds of things. Its antiseptic properties are not a cover-up of a situation; they are a clean-up. Baking soda also has a cool effervescent property that makes it bubble up if it’s mixed in with something that’s acidic. Here’s how to eliminate the five big odors that could be contributing to your house smells:

1. Nasty Cat Litter Box

Cat litter cleaning is practically a way of life for some people, as they incorporate daily cleaning of the cat box in their cleaning rituals. Have you noticed that if you skip a day or two, you’ll gag during the cleaning process? In some cases, wearing a gas mask may not be enough! Stop all this cat clean-up madness by liberally sprinkling baking soda into the cat’s litter box before you scoop. Then liberally sprinkle baking soda after cleaning on the new fresh clean litter. It will keep the smell away much longer.

2. The Toilet that Speaks with Smells

If your toilet is super stinky, take a deep breath before entering the room, armed with your Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Flush the toilet. Still holding your breath, dump a whole cup of baking soda into the toilet. Shut the lid quickly and let the bubbles scrub away. About now, you’ll be out of breath, so get out of there. Set your timer for one hour and go back and flush. This procedure may have to be repeated several times depending on just how stinky your toilet is.

3. The Cover-Me-Up Drain with a Foul Odor

Drains can be quite nasty but no longer will they win over you! Get in the habit of adding ¼ cup to ½ cup baking soda to the drain a few times a week. To remember to do this, connect the act of doing the task to something you do twice a week, such as vacuuming.

4. The Vacuum Cleaner Oxymoron

A vacuum cleaner is supposed to assist with removal of toxins from your home but if your vacuum is stinky, there’s a big problem. Every time you turn on the vacuum, it will spew out dust particles – and if there’s something stinky in it, your whole house will rapidly smell bad. To remedy this, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet an hour before vacuuming, then vacuum it up. The vacuum and carpet will be freshened up simultaneously.

5.The Something’s Rotting in Here Refrigerator

Opening the refrigerator door should give you the feeling of excitement, not disgust. Cleaning the refrigerator is essential to your peace of mind! Block off an hour of your day and clean the refrigerator with a baking soda / water solution. Then leave baking soda in an open container in the refrigerator. Eliminate your house smells! You’ll feel a lot better – and healthier!

HEALTH

Are You Suffering From Pain And Don’t Know Why? Well, The Answer Might Be Simpler Than You Think. By Dr. Brett Gottlieb, D.C.

Have you been living with constant nagging pain? Are doctors telling you that they can’t help you? That you’re just going to need to learn to live with your pain? Have you tried just about everything out there with nothing in return but empty promises and money down the drain? Are you about to give up and just live with your pain or pop pain pills just to get through the day? Well, this is not unlike the kind of stories I have heard from many other Sacramento residents. And now they are living pain free lives thanks to a little-known procedure called NUCCA. NUCCA stand for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. Chiropractors trained in the NUCCA technique are experts in the detection and correction of what is known as “The Atlas Subluxation Complex” (ASC). The ASC can be the cause of your pain and must be corrected for your pain to ever go away permanently. The NUCCA technique is very specific. It involves a detailed examination including postural analysis using a machine called the Anatometer as well as x-ray analysis to develop a individualized formula for correction of the ASC. Specificity is an essential part of NUCCA and results are directly related to this. If you have already been to a chiropractor and have not received the results you desire it is most likely because of a lack of specificity necessary to correct the ASC. The Atlas Subluxation Complex is a misalignment of the top vertebrae of the spine. This vertebrae, through accidents, injuries, and bad posture can slip out of alignment. Once this happens, nerve flow from the brain to the body can become disrupted. This can cause pain over time or even result in many other health problems. Some of the common complaints that can be caused by the ASC include migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, neck pain, back pain, numbness and tingling, anxiety, sinus congestion, allergies, digestive problems, and fatigue. For a free consultation and exam, please contact my office at 916965-7155.

hocolate strawberries are the perfect dessert to end a romantic meal for two, or an elegant dinner party. However, buying chocolate dipped strawberries can be pretty expensive. So making chocolate covered strawberries at home is the perfect solution!

NUTRITION

The fact is, making chocolate strawberries is incredibly easy to do. You can get amazing results at a fraction of the cost. All you need is some strawberries, and a bit of good chocolate to melt. So how do you do it? It’s easy.

Step 1: Pick the Strawberries.
Picking the right strawberries is important. Your chocolate-

dipped strawberries will only be as good as the strawberries you start with. Of course, smothering anything in chocolate tends to make it way better, but still, you’ll get better results with better strawberries. Here’s what you should look for when you’re picking the berries. • Try to find ripe strawberries. Ripe strawberries are a nice, bright red. They’re also firm, but should give a little when you press them. And they also smell great! • Bigger isn’t always better, but when you’re making chocolate covered strawberries, bigger berries are a lot easier to work with. But ripeness comes before size!

Step 2: Pick The Chocolate.
It’s important to pick the right chocolate for your chocolate strawberries. But what exactly does that mean? Here are a few things to consider: • Choose a chocolate you like. If you prefer dark chocolate, go for that. But if you like white or milk chocolate, that’s the right choice for you. I find that semi-sweet is just perfect; it has a rich taste and just the right sweetness. But that’s just me! • Choose a brand you enjoy. There’s no need to go for the most expensive brand, unless that’s what you prefer! • Chocolate chips are perfect. They’re small, uniformly sized, and perfect for melting.

Step 3: Melt The Chocolate.
Melting the chocolate properly is the key to making perfect chocolate-dipped strawberries. • If you know how to temper chocolate, you can do that. Tempering chocolate is a process that helps the chocolate dry firm and hard, so that your chocolate coated strawberries don’t get sticky or melted. • If you don’t want to temper the chocolate, the best thing to do is to heat the chocolate until it’s just barely melted, and then stir it until it’s smooth. You can either melt it in the microwave in short bursts, over a double boiler, or over very low heat. Step 4: Dip The Strawberries.

Once the chocolate is melted, the only thing left to do is dip the berries in the chocolate. And it’s really just as easy as it sounds. Take your pot of chocolate, and dip the strawberry in it until almost all the red is covered – leaving a little bit of red uncovered makes the chocolate strawberries look even better!

Here are a few tips.

• Hold the strawberries by the stem. If they don’t have one, you can use a toothpick or a fork. • Start with the biggest berries first. The chocolate is deeper at first, and then gets shallower as you go. It’s easier to get the bigger ones out of the way when there are still lots of chocolate. • Let the strawberries dry on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. That way, if you need to move them, it’s easy. • Strawberries coated in tempered chocolate can air-dry in just a few minutes. But if you didn’t temper the chocolate, you may need to store them in the fridge for about 45 minutes for the chocolate to harden. After that, take them out though, or the chocolate will start to sweat and fall off the berries. And that’s really all there is to it. In much less than half an hour, you can be enjoying wonderful, elegant chocolate strawberries. So go ahead and try it - can you really go wrong with chocolate and strawberries?

What You Think & How You Feel!

I

just recently wrote a blog entitled “LOVE YOUR LIVER?”. It stirred a lot of thoughts in me, and reminded me of a passage I had heard, while attending church, in my youth. And, it prompted me to search out the passage in the Bible, where Jesus was questioned about Hebrew traditions regarding the types of food they ate, and what was regarded as acceptable and what was regarded as “sinful”. Obviously Jesus was “light years” ahead of the people who were questioning him, regarding the mind/body connection and health. Depression, in psychological terms, is often referred to as anger turn inward. And it does just what the term indicates it “depresses”, emotional responses, and in turn, if depression continues, it will depress the immune system.

NUTRITION

If you are having problems or symptoms of pain in your life, I encourage you to take a moment and explore what might be the “root” of the issue. If you can’t do it on your own, make an appointment with someone who can help you identify, and create a plan of action to help you change your thinking. It is a an old slogan, but it works,

“Change your thinking, change your life.”

Anxiety, on the other hand, keeps the individual in a chronic state of “fight or flight”, “overusing” the emotions (energy in motion) and draining the immune system. Both anxiety and depression point to the root cause, or root belief of “I am not good enough.” In response to all of these negative thoughts and feelings, the body finally says,” I can’t take any more, I am on overload, “so the body short circuits or shuts down. When clients come in for an appointment with me, they often have some physical reaction (symptom) presenting in their mind/ body. My response most often, “apparently your body is sending you a message, and it wants you to pay attention.” That leads us to exploring where the pain or symptom is originating. If we identify the root of the symptom, often the symptoms (pains) go away, or it will point the individual to a new way of thinking or plan of action for their life. Most often, symptoms have something to do with the general way a person is responding, or not responding, to what is going on in their life. All of us, have a myriad of thoughts, going through our minds every day, and we have a choice about what we choose to think, and how we respond to the various circumstances in our lives.

Fun & Healthy Kids Activity: Make Your Own Healthy Ice Cream By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski

F

ifth graders at Two Rivers Elementary School in Sacramento had a chance to celebrate their big accomplishment for the school year – high school achievement – with a healthy ice cream party in May. During the course of the school year, the students became Memory Masters, President Historians, Presidential Pets experts and read five books a week with my Million Dollar Memory programs in addition to their regular coursework. Thirty-one of 34 of the students were awarded the Superintendent Award (highest grades), Principal’s Award, and/or Honor Roll.

Is Homemade Ice Cream Better? If you’ve always wondered how to create your own ice cream recipe from scratch, here’s the same how-to process taught to the fifth graders:

1. Start with Volume in Mind.

Remember that you need 1-1/2 quarts volume to fill up the average ice cream maker. That means six cups total. It could include 2 cups milk, 1 cup coconut milk, 1 cup cream, 1 cup peanut butter, ½ cup honey, and ½ cup diced fruit. Your primary liquids can include any of the following: milk (not skim), whipping cream, half and half, yogurt, kefir milk, buttermilk, coconut milk, fruit juice, beaten eggs and fruit puree. Decide what your ingredients will be in this category first.

2. Add Bursts of Flavor.

There are many flavors to choose from – vanilla, almond extract, lemon extract, raspberry extract, spices, coconut, nuts, fruit, chocolate, mint, or ginger. You can also add beverages for flavor. Here are the usual ingredient amounts for each of these flavors: • 1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1 teaspoon extracts (vanilla, almond, etc.) • ½ cup shredded or flaky coconut • 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon spices (cinnamon, cardamon, pumpkin pie spice, fresh rosemary, basil and mint) • ½ cup coconut cream concentrate • ½ cup to 2 cups nuts

• 1 handful to 3 cups fruit • 2 tablespoons to ½ cup cocoa powder • ¼ cup to 2/3 cup chocolate • 1 teaspoon mint extract or 1 to 3 teaspoons fresh mint leaves • 1 teaspoon ginger powder or ¼ cup candied ginger • 8-12 ounces chai tea, root beer, green tea or fruit juice

3. Sweet Can Be Good.

There are many ways to add sweetness without using sugar. • 5 to 10 drops of Stevia extract • ¼ to ½ cup agave extract • ¼ to 1 cup honey

• 3 tablespoons to ½ cup xylitol • ½ to 1 cup maple syrup • ½ to 1 cup fruit preserves

4. Consider Texture.

Although you can make low fat ice creams, the fat in dairy products and nuts is a healthier fat to eat than hydrogenated fats (trans fats), margarine or vegetable oils. This is why the Paleo Diet is becoming so popular now, and those who go on it are finding health issues clearing up. Fat is essential for hormone production in the body. Here are some types of fats you can add to your ice cream recipe: • ½ to 1 cup peanut butter • ¼ to 2 cups chopped nuts • ¼ cup to 1 cup coconut cream • ¼ to 2 cups coconut milk • ¼ to 2/3 cup shredded coconut

• 1 to 3 avocados • 2 tablespoons to 2/3 cup butter • ¼ to ½ cup cocoa butter • 1 cup to 4 cups whole milk • ½ cup to 3 cups Greek yogurt

5. You Need a Binding Agent.

Next consider what will bind the ice cream together. If you are using whole milk, butter, cream, cocoa butter, half and half or Greek yogurt, you will have enough fat to prevent ice crystals from forming in the ice cream, giving the recipe a creamy texture. However, if your recipe contains any of the following ingredients, you can avoid a soft serve final product and the mouth feel of real ice cream: • 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons gelatin • 1 to 2 tablespoons coconut flour • ½ cup nuts • 1 to 3 tablespoons fiber

6. Blend Away.

• up to ½ cup cooked tapioca • 1 tablespoon or more chia seeds • 1 to 2 eggs or egg whites (wash before use)

The beauty of making ice cream is that all these ingredients can simply be blended and then the mixture poured in an electric ice cream maker. The ice cream maker churns away, doing the rest of the work. Blend the ingredients and taste to see if you need to alter the taste before pouring into the ice cream maker. Then enjoy! 12 CELEBRATING

What The Kids Thought About Tasting Homemade Ice Creams

“My favorite flavor was coconut because the texture was delightful and the flavor was very sweet. It had a unique flavor that I have never tasted before. I felt better after eating the ice cream, relaxed and calm for the rest of the day. The ice cream was very filling and satisfied my hunger for sweets. During the summer, I am going to experiment making different berry flavors. I would add berries, orange juice, grape juice, and a hint of vanilla. Having Dr. Donna visit my class and make ice cream was a wonderful experience.“

“The coconut cream flavor was out of this world. The tiny chunks of coconut were a burst of flavor in my mouth. I thought the homemade ice cream was better than store bought because it was made fresh. After learning how to make homemade healthy ice cream, I want to make a few fruity flavors at home like peaches and strawberries. The ice cream party was a lot of fun. I enjoyed trying the ice cream and learning how to make it. Not to mention the healthy things you can put in it.”

“I enjoyed the coconut cream the best because of the texture. The texture had little chunks of coconut, but was also smooth. After eating the healthy ice cream, it calmed me down. I felt more relaxed. Store-bought ice cream isn’t as healthy as homemade ice cream. I can’t wait to make mango or tropical flavor at home. I loved having Dr. Donna come to my class. The ice cream was wonderful. She taught us how to make different kinds of ice cream using a variety of ingredients at home. She also made the best pie ever to go with our ice cream. This was a great experience learning how homemade ice cream is healthier than store-bought ice cream.”

“My favorite flavor was the raspberries because it is one of my favorite fruits. The vanilla brought out the flavor of the raspberries. It was soft, creamy, and had small chunks of raspberries bursting with flavor. I thought it was better than store-bought ice cream because it was creamier and tasted better. I want to make a tropical fruit flavor with mangoes, papaya, lemon, lime, splenda, vanilla, berries, bananas, and half and half. I enjoyed learning how to make ice cream with Dr. Donna and how to make whip cream. It was very interesting to learn how to make coconut cream, too.”

“My favorite flavor was chocolate. I liked it because it tasted like real chocolate. It was real smooth. I liked the homemade ice cream better than the store bought. The store-bought has preservatives and other liquids added to it. Also, store-bought ice cream has more sugar and sodium in it.”

You can find plenty of ice cream recipes online but making your own recipe from scratch is a lot more fun! If you need a quick view and suggestions on your potential recipe ingredients, send them to me at DrDonna@fastermac.net

A New Twist on Going Green

By “Mad Dog Megan” (Megan White), Fitness Trainer

P

ound for pound, calorie for calorie, greens are hands down the most nutritious food. Packed with several of our essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants with little calories- the only down side is the chewing.

In those Greens*: Vitamin A- boosts immune system, strengths bones and teeth, powerful anti-oxidant
Vitamin Cboosts immune system, prevents cardiovascular disease, eye disease, and skin wrinkling. Vitamin K- Protects bones, reduces inflammation, good for arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis
Phytonutrients- Helps prevent disease, aids in nutrient absorption, comes with antioxidants Folate- brain food, heart healthy, helps in depression, aids in red blood cell production. Antioxidants- neutralizes cancer causes toxins
*And MANY MANY more. Kale- Vitamin A, C, K Collard Greens- Vitamin A, C, K
 Swiss Chard- Vitamin A, C
Bok Choy- Vitamin C, A, and phytonutrients Arugula- Vitamin A, C, K, and calcium Spinach- Vitamin C and folate

4 Ways to Get in Your Greens 1. Fruit and Veggie Shakes

My favorite way to eat greens is to drink them. Your shake will turn green, but your taste buds won’t know the difference.

2. Stir Frys

Mixing greens with other crunchier vegetables like carrots, broccoli, water chestnuts, snap peas, or my personal favorite sweet potatoes makes them easier to get down.

3. Sauteed

the denser greens (like kale or swiss chard) get more tender if they’re massaged with oil before cooking. Try Sautéing your greens in garlic, onion, and broth.

4. Salads

Make you salads fun. Adding Watermelon and citrus are a great way to get your greens down. Corn and beans will give them a southwest feel, or top with a bit of cheese, nuts, or avocado. I really could go on for the whole magazine about all the health benefits and nutrients found in greens. Bottom line: EAT THEM. Every single day. The more variety of greens you can eat the better. This summer keep your plate GREEN. For Green recipes check out my blog.

HAIR, SKIN & BEAUTY

“It’s the worst case of bedsores I’ve ever seen. Whoever her caretaker is should be fired immediately.” That’s what the Emergency Room doctor told Sam a few months ago. Sam’s mother had multiple sclerosis and was bedridden. She didn’t have a lot of pain due to the disturbed nerve function and paralysis.

Should All Bedridden Patients Get Bedsores? By Dr. Donna, Editor

Hired professional nursing staff did their best to heal the bedsores that covered 70% of her back, but the point in time came when the traveling doctor said she needed a higher level of wound care than he could provide. That’s when she was transported to the Emergency Room. She was diagnosed with Stage IV bedsores and an infection that was invading the pelvis, too. Bedsores are called pressure sores. They develop partly due to pressure on a joint or body part that continues for long periods of time. The pressure cuts off adequate circulation to the body part and then the skin begins to break down. Bedsores are graded on a scale of Stage I through IV.

Here’s a chart of the differences:

Stage I – The skin darkens and is not broken but may hurt, feels mushy and is warmer or cooler to the touch. Stage II – A blister, scrape or shallow crater starts to form. Stage III – The sore becomes a deep crater. Stage IV – The ulcer extends deep, affecting muscle, bone, tendons, or joints.

The doctor attending to Sam’s mother’s case commented that the black scablike area on her bedsores was really dead tissue and had to be scraped out. Her nursing staff had mistaken this for healing. Doctors were consulted for skin grafts and skin flaps to encourage healing.

Guard Against Neglect of Your Loved One

Healthcare staff are required to turn a bedridden patient every 20 minutes to prevent these lesions from appearing. And according to one study found in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing in 2011, interviews with nurses from eight different acute care units showed negligence in 73% of them. The nurses didn’t know what grade the bedsore of their patient was. Only 60% of them turned their patients regularly and made excuses for not doing it, citing that the family said not to, ran out of time, and the patient would experience pain if turned. The problem with excuses is that a bedsore can become life-threatening once it gets infected. Sam’s mother then developed pneumonia in the hospital and could have died from both infections..

Take a Proactive Approach

There’s a lot you can do to reverse bedsores. In fact, over 13,000 research studies, case histories and policy statements by professional health organizations are available online on the topic on PubMed. Although not turning a patient in bed is a cause, there’s also a big nutritional component to the picture; one that quite a few healthcare professionals ignore. As a dietitian in nursing homes over the years, I set up feeding protocols for patients with bedsores. All the patients had these two lab test results in common: low total protein levels and low albumin levels. They often weren’t consuming enough protein and enough calories to keep the skin healthy. If bruising was evident, it was an indication that they had a vitamin C deficiency also. Every one of these patients responded quickly to the added nutrition, despite nursing staff that may not have turned them enough in their beds each day.

What You Can Do Today to Stimulate Healing

Here are a few of some of the study findings that may help your loved one with bedsores: 1. Adding fish oil and a multivitamin/mineral to the diets of critically ill patients with bedsores prevented their progression. 2. If someone with bedsores has a vitamin D deficiency or levels lower than what they should be (they may be low normal), they have a greater risk of developing bedsores which will become severe. 3. Adding up to 9 grams arginine to the diet of those with bedsores can help totally heal those with Stage II, III, and IV bedsores in three weeks. Bedsore patients also with spinal cord injuries taking 9 grams arginine daily healed twice as fast as those who don’t. 4.The protein requirement needed to heal bedsores is 0.95 grams/kilogram per day. This means only 43 grams protein/100 pounds body weight. You can get 43 grams protein with 3 oz. beef, chicken, turkey or fish for lunch and dinner plus an 8-oz glass milk. Don’t let a loved one suffer with bedsores. There’s no need for it! The healing solutions are out there! Dr. Donna is a clinical nutritionist in Sacramento with over 20 years experience in reversing illnesses with nutrition. She can be reached at 916-649-8323.

Dear Mitch, My sister (in Florida) and I have learned a lot from your thoughts and considerations.

RELATIONSHIPS

The situation is our other sister is married to a man I hate! OK, he’s REALLY nice to everyone in our family. Our mother loves him. Everyone sees this super great, funny, rich guy who treats our sister great when we’re all together. He makes lots of money, which also makes everyone feel like he’s so great. He takes off on weekends alone, giving her no information about who he’s with, where he’s going or anything. We think he has another woman. When she asks any questions, he yells at her, saying she’s a controlling bitch! And one time he said he was going to choke her if she didn’t shut up! He treats her like a servant. She has to clean everything, pick up all his clothes and stuff. He walks in like the prince and tells her she’s lucky to have him and to be his wife. The only other person I’ve met who sees his true side is his former business partner who I work with, who said this man is known as a jerk by everyone who works under him. My sister cries and cries to me and my other sister. We know our parents and family will think she’s trash for leaving “such a good husband”. But she’s depressed, she can’t sleep, and she’s losing her hair. I’m really worried. What can we do? Please help, Really Scared Walnut Creek, CA

Viewpoint Inspired

Dear Scared, First, no one should EVER treat ANYONE as “less”, and being in relationship means commitment to treat the other with respect, caring for their best. The problem here is no matter what you do, until your sister realizes she deserves much better, and is willing to make a change, nothing will change. Meanwhile, this relationship, if it continues, will NEVER change. This Husband is displaying some of the classic traits of a Narcissist. These people always see themselves as perfect, and are brilliant at making everyone else wrong, less and incompetent. Narcissists are EXTREMELY committed to looking perfect (which, in their viewpoint, confirms their perfection), SO MUCH committed that they put all of their energy into the appearance. So, of course they look great to others! When one puts all of their effort into this abusive act, their efforts are generally rewarded with victories, awards, money, glory, fame (except when some people, like a business partner, have the awareness and self-respect to not accept the Narcissist’s abuse). NOTES: • Narcissists have trained themselves to never, ever consider the possibility that they are imperfect. So the possibility of true, core change for them is essentially impossible. • Narcissists desperately need others to suck dry of esteem to feed their Egos, and to feel better than, more capable than, smarter than, and faster than others. When your sister calls him on his stuff, much less suggests in any manner that anyone on the planet besides him has a valid need, his whole belief system is challenged. Here are a few things to try. All have the potential to help your sister if she realizes that she is a valuable human being who deserves much better: 1. 100% of all communication with your sister has to be kept away from her husband. If she won’t be absolutely committed to such, you aren’t safe from his anger. 2. Keep focused to see if he hits her, locks her in/out of somewhere, or anything that can be reported to law enforcement. Most Narcissists are SO on guard to protect their image that they’re smart enough to not do anything that others can identify as “wrong”. Many a Mother-In-Law (per your example) lose their adoration of the Narcissist when they personally witness abuse. 3. Couch everything said to him in overly patronizing terms. Everything should be about how you are making his life easier, how HE deserves respect, space, etc. 4.You need to get your sister out and away from him as frequently and early as possible. If he’s told you that you’re doing something for HIM by taking her to your home for the weekend, he’s more likely to accept it. When your sister is away from him, depending on her personality, etc., you can start to learn where she is as far as the potential of getting her away from him forever. 5. eMail me at ForeverInspired@surewest.net if you do get her away some. WIth more details, I can help someone who is trying to break the sticky web of the Narcisssist’s disorder. The history, beliefs, and more should be uncovered here to empower her to GET AWAY FOREVER. The Sacramento Capitals Sizzling Summer Season Begins! By Dr. Donna, Editor

If you want more success in life, hang out with those who are successful. Successful people have known this for years. Now you have a chance to do so at any of the upcoming Sacramento Capitals Tennis Team during the month of July.

Autograph Seekers are Welcome! It’s an entire season of #1s. The #1 American tennis player right now is Sam Querrey from southern California. He’ll be there and you can’t miss him at 6’6” tall. It’s guaranteed you’ll be amazed at his great big serve and great big forehand swing. Then there’s Former #1 American tennis player, Mardy Fish. He won six singles titles and eight doubles titles in his career and is a seven-time U.S. Davis Cup team member. If you watched the Wimbledon matches in 2011, you would have seen him there, or if you’ve been watching Capitals matches for the last few years, his face will be familiar to you. The #1 junior tennis player in the world, Taylor Townsend, a left-handed 5’9” tall, 17-year-old who hails from Boca Raton FL, will make her debut this season with the Sacramento Capitals. Mark Knowles is the captain of the team and another top player you might recognize on the courts. He’ll play his 12th season for the Sac Capitals this year. Did you know that he was #1 in doubles in 2002 and 2004? Knowles won three Grand Slam doubles titles as well as a mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2009. Ryan Sweeting captured his first ATP title in Houston in 2011 and also qualified for the Australian Open the same year. This is his second season of Mylan WTT with the Sacramento Capitals. Megan MouLTon-Levy will seem miniscule standing next to Sam Querrey or Ryan Sweeting at only 5’ tall but her smile beams brightly and she could be your favorite player of all.. She won first place for the Grand Slam doubles match at the Australian Open this year and will be a fierce competitor. The coach is Wayne BryaN, veteran coach of the Sacramento Capitals for 11 years already. His history of being #1 goes back to Coach of the Idaho Sneak-

ers of World Team Tennis in 1999, named Pro of the Year of the PTR in 2008, and proud father of twin sons Mike and Bob who hold the all-time record of 88 doubles titles and 90 titles on the ATP Tour. The superstar ‘boys’ went home with the Olympic Gold Medal at the London Olympics in 2012 and will appear at Sacramento Capitals this season.

How Do You Train Children to Win at Sports?

You might be wondering exactly how a coach could train his boys to be such superstars. Wayne’s infectious passion for the sport certainly was learned by the boys at an early age, and he says some of their success comes from seeds planted while in the womb. As babies, they had tennis balls in their cribs, not stuffed animals. You can read about his method of raising his boys in his book, Raising Your Child to be a Champion in Athletics, Arts, and Academics.

How Tennis Players Stay Healthy

“Tennis players are all healthy eaters and drinkers. Their drink of choice is always water, although they may have their own individual regimen,” Coach Wayne said. A gluten-free diet is now endorsed by some of the top players such as Mike and Bob Bryan, Andy Murray (#3 player in the world from Scotland), and Novak Djokovic from Serbia. “In order to optimize the remarkable stamina, strength and power needed for the sport, they must eat well and be in top shape… Luckily, tennis is the one sport that has the least amount of injuries associated with it. You won’t suffer from any broken bones unless you run into a pole. And with modern training techniques, you can minimize wrist, elbow and shoulder strain.” Tennis athletes traditionally do not lift heavy weights, but they do work on sprint training, the elliptical and often work out with bungee cords. “Tennis is the ideal way to work out because your heart beat stays up the whole time. You may end up sprinting for the ball the equivalent of 6 miles during a game with a recovery time of only 25 seconds in between the sprints.

How Tennis Matches are Set Up for Fun

By coming out to the Sacramento Capitals matches, you’ll have an evening filled with fun. They are located at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights (see www. saccaps.com for directions) and the stadium is set up so that all 2100 seats are good ones with great views of the action. At 6 p.m. you can observe the players practicing for the competition. Each team has two men and two women on it. In fact, tennis is the only professional sport where men and women play together. You’ll see men’s singles, women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in an action-packed evening. Coach Wayne sits on the court and you can observe him coaching the players during the match. Cheering is encouraged during the 2-1/2 hours and there are autographs afterward. The atmosphere is ideal for families, and quite inspirational for children.

There’s a new-ish word in the English lexicon: “childfree.” The word is, essentially, a rejoinder and refutation of another word: “childless.” For much of human history, the state of being an adult sans child was considered, at best, an aberration, and, at worst, a personal defect. After all, in the words of Whitney Houston, the children are the future. And, not too long ago, children were also considered free labor, positively necessary to keep the farm running smoothly. But in the last 50 years or so, attitudes have begun to change. Particularly in urban areas, where individualism and “self-realization”

are the prevailing ethos, people have begun to postpone having children, or to forego it altogether. Traditionalists consider this trend yet another disturbing characteristic of the post-60s narcissistic, self-indulgent generation, while the “childfree” consider it an expression of personal autonomy and choice. Both sides have a tendency to throw around the word “selfish.” Many parents consider those without children selfish for failing to pass on their genes and contribute to the survival of the human race, while many without children consider it selfish to have children when one isn’t prepared to raise them properly. The world doesn’t need any more foul-mouthed, videogame-obsessed, saggy-pants-wearing Jerry Springer babies, they argue. Both sides have a point, and both sides are suspicious of the other. The reasons for having children are persuasive and profound. Many parents describe how their lives felt empty before having children—that having children gave meaning to their lives. Having children can strengthen the bond between a couple. The joy that comes from listening to the sweet coos and murmurs of an infant; the excitement that comes from watching a baby take its first steps; the pride that comes from watching one’s child walk across the stage to receive a high school diploma. The ultimate satisfaction that comes from holding one’s grandchild for the first time. These are all profound human experiences, not to be scoffed at.

The reasons for not having children are, arguably, equally persuasive and profound, including: economic insufficiency; perceived or actual incapacity to be a responsible and patient parent; existing or possible health problems, including genetic disorders; lack of access to support networks and resources; potential damage to existing relationships; the belief that it is wrong to intentionally have a child when there are so many children available for adoption; concern regarding environmental impacts such as overpopulation, pollution, and resource scarcity; or even just a general dislike of children. These are all important considerations, not to be scoffed at. Several months ago a woman named Isabella Dutton made waves when she wrote an editorial in a prominent UK newspaper (later picked up by Yahoo! News) describing her regrets for having children. She describes herself as a good, and eventually loving, parent, but nevertheless regrets the time and sacrifice required to be a parent. When the nurses first put her baby, Stuart, into her arms, she writes, “I did not experience that sudden leap of the heart that new mums are expected to feel. Instead I thought bleakly, ‘What have I done?’” Two years later she had a daughter Jo. “I felt precisely the same indifference towards her as I had to Stuart, but I knew I would care for Jo to the best of my ability, and love her as I had grown to love him. Yet I dreaded her dependence; resented the time she would consume, and that like parasites, both my children

would continue to take from me and give nothing meaningful back in return.” She concludes, “Young children prevent you from being spontaneous; every outing becomes an expedition. If you take your job as a parent seriously, you always put their needs before your own.” What is interesting about Isabella Dutton’s article is the response it provoked in her readers. Some described her as a monster, cold-blooded and unnatural, while others concluded that she was only describing the dirty little secret that many mothers harbor, but are generally too afraid to articulate. Whether you decide to have children or not, it is a profound decision, and one you will have to live with for the rest of your life.

etter get ready; edible bugs are starting to become a big business. Even though it’s not happening here yet in the U.S., it will soon. That’s because it’s estimated that the demand for protein foods will increase 70% from now up til the year 2050. Insects are a traditional food in many parts of the world. In fact, if a culture isn’t a meat-eating one, it’s guaranteed that they are consuming insects as part of their protein needs. Edible ‘bugs’ are rich in protein and are a potential food source.

What Wild Animals Eat is Not Random

What’s Inside an Edible Bug?

Here’s a list of the nutrients found in bugs: essential fats such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, zinc and copper, iron, manganese and magnesium, phosphoruous and selenium, and four of the B vitamins – riboflavin, biotin, folic acid and pantothenic acid. Of course, the bugs also contain protein, amino acids and calories. Compared to one pound of steak providing 112 grams protein, the edible bugs could provide 311 grams protein per pound. That is, if you’re looking at the insect called Clanis Bilineata, found in China. Most Americans will probably snub the idea of eating the insects until studies actually prove that they could be helpful. Well, the research done in animals has already shown that rats were able to use the protein from the bugs as a good source to build tissues that are made of protein in the body. It didn’t take long; the study showed results in only 10 days. So, are you ready to bite off the head of an edible cockroach or beetle? If not, better reconsider how you’re getting your protein in your diet. And watch more of the survival programs where people overcame their psychological objections to eating them so you can make the transition.

When you look at animals such as the great and lesser apes, a big part of their diet is edible bugs. They aren’t only eating nuts, seeds, greens and fruits like many vegetarians think – and use as their rationalization for why their diet supposedly is adequate. The apes spend great amounts of time figuring out ways to trap and find large amounts of insects so they can feast on them without having to expend large amounts of energy in the process. The more ants they can eat at one time, the less time investment they’ll make in tracking down other foods to give them protein, calories and nutrients. And scientists have discovered that what chimps eat is not haphazard; they are quite sophisticated in the edible insects they choose. They’ll deliberately eat bugs high in protein, calories and fats over ones that aren’t. Entomophagy is on its way… And when it comes to man, some cultures will also deliberately cut down palm trees for the express purpose of getting the droves of caterpillars Advanced Pest Control of Sacramento is again proud to be a part that appear afterwards. of the History making SACRAMENTO CAPITALS team. What kind of insects are edible? Ants, butterflies, moths, beetles, and others are edible. However, not all can or should be eaten. In Mexico, up to 67 different species of butterflies are eaten and collected in the larval stages. You may be shocked to find out that the country of India is very advanced in the area of edible insects. They now have a huge database for 51 different species of edible bugs that includes photos of the bugs, how to identify the bugs, where they can be found, what their nutrient content is, what medicinal constituents they contain, and even how much money could potentially be earned from selling them along with demand. When it Comes to Gardening “Nature Knows Best” By Dr. Donna, Editor

One secret to his gardening method is to not till the ground of his gardens. He only covers it, “just like God does in the forests, plains, and everywhere in creation. Everywhere you look in nature, it’s luscious. Yet no one is out there fertilizing or tilling.”

Man’s Problems with Farming

The issues with agriculture - soil preparation, fertilization, irrigation, weed control, pest control, crop rotation, and pH issues don’t ever exist in his garden. Yet, his soil does not compact and is aerated. What he does instead of all these usual gardening activities is add wood chips to cover the ground. “We work hard to fail at gardening!” he said. “If you look down at parts of the Midwest from a plane, you’ll see areas that are barren. We’re losing soil. When the soil erodes, all the organic matter disappears. The ground needs a covering. The covering is what nourishes the soil. The wood chips stay on top of the ground, don’t blow away, stays and waits to be used. It gets better with age.

Why There’s No Soggy Ground

In the rainforests of the Northwest, there could be 15 feet of rainwater each year and yet, there’s no soggy ground. The wood, leaves, and branches that fall naturally absorb it. If it rains too much, the wood chips displace the water. When there’s not enough rainfall, wood chips retain the water. In the same way, adding wood chips to your soil creates a layer over the soil that acts like a blanket that helps offset any weather conditions. What Paul has found is that his plants have the same ratio of water in them as the earth and the body - 75%.

“If plants are irrigated (watered from the top), they don’t develop that ratio. Why? Because they never develop a big root system. In cases where there’s a heavy clay soil, no roots will develop in the plant either. But in porous soil, roots have large capacity to grow and hold water,” he said. Paul never waters his garden, yet when you bite into a fruit or vegetable from his garden, juice and water flows out of them unlike storebought produce. “The ideal way to water is to water from the ground not the top,” he said. “Why do plants along the rivers stay so lush? It’s because they’re watered from the ground. The ground maintains and holds the water because of the covering. And rainwater is superior to the water you can use. Rainwater is the best.”

There’s no negative about Paul’s garden. He lets the plants die in the garden. It’s similar to the grasslands. No one fertilizes the grasslands. The plants live, die and nourish the soil. It’s really simplistic. And his method is something to really ponder. In nutrition training, there’s a basic concept that most of the water the body needs is from food. If fruits and veggies had the water (and nutrients) they were supposed to have, would anyone really need to take water bottles with them everywhere? Would we have to drink so much water?

HEALTHY GARDENING / HEALTH

P

aul Gautschi, arborist and gardener for 55 years, now only uses a rake in his garden. He may have the answer to the problem of not drinking enough water all day long.

For more information, watch Paul’s documentary about gardening at www.backtoedenfilm.com It could change your life.

The compost holds the water so no irrigation is needed. And with irrigation, you get weed germination. That’s why he doesn’t water. Yet his garden isn’t muddy.

Why Insects Don’t Eat His Plants

Paul has taken different soils, even clay and rock, and transformed them into luscious gardens. The leaves of his plants are healthy and succulent. The insects don’t bother his plants either. “The insects are looking for cellulose and fiber. Because there’s so much water in my plants, insects drown when they take a bite. Insects in society worsened after the introduction of fertilizers. Then we developed insecticides and mutated insects followed. Now we put the insecticides right into the seeds…” he said.

“How excited are you guys about Ben McLemore?” asked Kings Majority Owner Vivek Ranadivé, as an elated crowd cheered following the announcement of the team’s firstround pick. “He was our No. 1 choice, and we were frantically in (Draft HQ) trying to trade up to the No. 2, 3, 4 slot,” he continued. “As I’ve said before, seven is my lucky number. When I was with the Warriors, we got (Stephen) Curry and (Harrison) Barnes at seven. My birthday is on the seventh, the Mayor, (Kevin Johnson), was picked seventh – he wore No. 7 – and we got the best player in the (Draft) at seven.” McLemore – a gifted athlete and formidable outside scorer who’s drawn favorable comparisons to 10-time AllStar Ray Allen – characterized being picked by the Kings as an exhilarating beginning to his NBA journey. “I’m happy I got selected and am going to be a part of the Kings, and I’m just blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of (this team),” said the former Jayhawk. “I’m ready to head down there and see everybody, the organization and the fans.” The athletic and highly-efficient 6-foot-5 freshman finished third in the Big 12 in scoring (15.9 points per game), and ranked among the conference leaders in free-throw accuracy (87 percent), three-point percentage (42 percent – second) and field-goal percentage (49.5 percent – eighth). “I think I could impact (the Kings) a lot,” said McLemore. “(I’m) just coming in with the winning mentality – helping my team win more games and helping the organization and go down the line and win a championship.”

He’s going to be a great talent for us and he’s going to help us a lot.” Inside Sleep Train Arena, fans exuded similar enthusiasm after watching Commissioner David Stern announce Sacramento’s first-round choice on KingsVision, as well as giant HD projections screens set up around the court and concourse. “(McLemore) was probably a topthree pick in everybody’s mock drafts, so I’m surprised he went that low – but I’m so happy with it,” said Cap City Kingdom Rookie Member Francisco

“I just love the way the players, the ownership and the community are bonding with the fans. Kings Draft Headquarters and the team’s Draft Viewing Party rejoiced in unison on Thursday, as Sacramento selected Kansas guard Ben McLemore – a consensus Second Team AllAmerican and a First Team All-Big 12 selection – No. 7 overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.

“(McCallum is) one of the classiest, classiest young men you’ll ever meet and a heck of a player,” said D’Alessandro. The Lute Olson All-American led the conference in scoring (18.7 points per game) and steals (1.9), while finishing second in assists (4.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and sixth in field-goal percentage (49.1 percent). As the Kings strive for all-around improvement, Head Coach Michael Malone believes both draftees will make a significant impact on the court and in the locker room. “A goal of mine for this team this year will be, let’s get better every day,” said Malone. “One thing I can say very confidently is that we got better today by (adding) the two young men we drafted – from a talent perspective (and) from a culture perspective.” Ranadivé came away similarly pleased and impressed with the results of the first Draft conducted by the newlook Kings front office. “I think this is the best Draft the Kings have had in years,” he said. “I think it’s a Draft we can be proud of.”

For Don, a first-time Cap City Kingdom Member, meeting one of his favorite players was one of the night’s many highlights. “Getting to see Bibby was a lot of fun – to have him come back was awesome,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed (tonight) in so many ways.

Raising Your Physical Fitness Level to New Heights!

What is fit? Can you be better than

you are? Of course you can. After practicing, teaching and rising thru the belt ranks to Grandmaster, I know I can do more, so, I know you can too. You might think you are in great shape but could your fitness level be raised? Would this help you live longer? Lower your pain and medical costs over the long run? Would it set a great example for the kids? The answer is yes. As adults we know exercise is important but finding the time is often a challenge. Martial arts instructors are leading by example as they teach skills and techniques to students daily. They are also important partners with parents

in helping set a positive example of good physical fitness for children. Kids will do what we do, while often ignoring what we say. (Jamie Palmer/ Fulton Ave shows a child at the San Juan STARS benefit basic taekwondo forms) For children physical fitness is almost a lost cause in some schools. Many can’t afford to provide active programs that engage youth in individual or team sports. The inactive nature of our present society engrossed in mobile viewing, texting and focus on small screens is leading to loss of muscle development and aerobic endurance for our future generations. Weaker hearts lead to weaker minds. This is a disaster in the making. Recognition of the importance of getting children more exercise has come recently from the Washington DC based Institute of Medicine. The prestigious medical group has called for a minimum of sixty minutes of physical activity for students every day! They are also urging that parents, teachers and school boards push to make PE a core subject, right in line with reading, writing and arithmetic. The report’s recommendation released in May, says just 50% of the nation’s youth get an hour of physical activity on any day. We have been hearing from parents that their kids can’t do many of the physical activities they enjoyed when they were kids because they don’t have the strength or endur-

T

he single speed bicycle is undoubtedly making a comeback. Once considered too simple or plain, this bicycle is gaining in popularity on paths, sidewalks and streets. Bicycles certainly are an enjoyable, inexpensive pastime that almost anyone can engage in. Since they were first offered to the public in the nineteenth century, bicycles became a world-wide habit. It’s estimated that there are more than one billion bicycles worldwide, twice as many as automobiles.

What is a Single Speed Bicycle?

With respect to something with moving parts, less is more. A bicycle with only one speed offers a simplicity that can’t be found in “regular” multi-gear bikes. Singles have fewer moving parts, which require significantly less attention and servicing. Without a complex gearing system, singles become more enduring in bad weather conditions. Water as well as mud doesn’t impact the “engine” as much as they do on a multi-gear bike. Efficiency is vital on anything human-powered. Singles usually have a much more efficient drive train, enabling them to supply more power to the road in a single pedal cycle.

SPORTS & FITNESS

A one speed bicycle, or “single”, is a type of bike with just one gear. Eschewing the derailleur gear system, singles adopt a freer, simpler look and cycling experience Advantages and Benefits of the Single Speed Bicycle

The single speed bicycle also is less expensive. If a vehicle can be stripped of unneeded parts, it will be far more cost-efficient, which can then be transformed into savings for the buyer. Bicycles can often be the sole means of travel for some individuals. A single offers a light price tag along with a heavy incentive.

Resurrection of the Single Speed Bicycle by Thord Hall

Exercising and the Single Speed Bicycle

Without having an additional gear for you to change to makes riding-efficiency essential on a single. This means a more rewarding exercise experience for riders. Single riders claim that they can get a better, more demanding workout by riding a single than they do from a multi-gear. Commuting Using the Single Speed Bicycle The single speed bike is actually a popular choice for city commuters. Effective pedaling style, proper braking technique and safe turning habits lend themselves to busy streets and intersections. Many urban riders claim to feel more secure on a single than they do on a multi-gear.

Recreation

The single speed bicycle is actually lighter and more maneuverable than a traditional bike. This makes it suitable for recreational riding. Paths and back roads move easily beneath a single, enabling the rider to look at scenery and appreciate the tranquility.

Camaraderie

Bicycles have had a tremendous impact on society. Their handiness makes them suitable for social scenes. Single speed bicycle enthusiasts are found in cities around the world. Clubs and cliques are popping up everywhere, with their own rules, ethos and code of conduct. The upright bicycle has changed little since its creation in 1885. The single hasn’t changed much either. And if its fans have it their way, it won’t any time soon. All the advantages are all there; light in weight, reduced maintenance, less expense along with a little nostalgia as well. Why Doggy Detox is Important for Your Dog …and how to get started By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret.)

H

ave you noticed the increase in environmental toxins in the past 5 years? The levels of aluminum, barium and vanadium are higher in the air than ever. Fish is so high in mercury that doctors recommend that women not eat it during pregnancy. GMO pollution continues to spread, and the water continues to have high amounts of fluoride in it, far too high for the size of most dogs to handle. Last month I ran a hair analysis on my dogs to find out how they were holding up against all these toxins. I run these on my nutrition clients so we can better determine outside toxic influences on their health. The results made me very distraught: both of them had higher levels of potentially toxic elements than most humans (aluminum, antimony, arsenic, lead, cadmium, thorium, manganese, and strontium). What to do was the next question, as veterinarians take a medical approach to animals’ health issues, and saving a dog from toxins outside of pumping their stomach of poisons is not something they have a protocol for. The heavy metals aren’t stomach poisons, but rather toxins that circulate in the entire body, damaging all the organs they come in contact with.

Step 1. Discover the Source of the Toxins

From a natural healing perspective, the first thing to do is to determine where the toxins are coming from. If only one of the heavy metals is high in the dog, it’s relatively easy to to determine the source. However, with many of them high, a pattern analysis has to be put in place. The pattern of both dogs was similar – more than 9 potentially toxic elements were high, following a pattern of environmental toxicity. This was consistent with the fact that both dogs love to spend their time outdoors at least 12 hours a day. 32 CELEBRATING

Step 2. Clean Up Your Environment

By steam cleaning the carpets in both the house and the car, all the dust with contaminants that had settled inside the house could be removed as a source of the heavy metals. I noticed a slight improvement in the dogs’ calmness after this step was taken. A schedule of monthly cleanings and more vacuuming will help keep dust to a minimum and remove its potential as a contributor to toxicity. Similarly, baths at least once every week would help remove additional contaminated dust picked up from the air.

Step 3. Don’t Wait. Begin Detox

Dogs have a shorter intestinal tract than humans, helpful in a situation where a dog has a high toxin level. The colon collects many toxins and with enough fiber in the body, they are disposed outside the body. It’s a good defense against toxins in the body. By increasing the dogs’ fiber in their diet, this would assist in removing a significant portion of the toxins naturally. For decades, research has shown that kelp has been an effective method of reducing toxins, especially heavy metals. Kelp is also a stool softener. One type of kelp is called Modifilan made of pure brown seaweed, Laminaria japonica, and developed as a remedy for Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe victims years ago. Modifilan binds strontium, lead, mercury and uranium and contains fucoidan, which stimulates the immune system. Without the activation of the immune system in anyone – human or animal with high heavy metals, there’s a risk of the toxins causing cancer.

YEARS | W W W.HEALTHFITNESS.US

Step 4. Increase the Dogs’ Vegetables and Fruits

Barley grass, alfalfa, carrots, and apples are some of the best foods to bind up toxins. Powdered forms are widely available. By adding a tablespoon to the food of larger dog’s diet and a teaspoon to small dog’s diets, you can expect detoxification to be sped up in the body.

Step 5. Give the Dogs Purified Water

We give ourselves clean water but often forget about our pets that need clean water just as much as we do. Purified water may seem like an added expense but water high in fluoride has been linked to solid tumors in dogs.

Step 6. Mud Baths

Mud is used therapeutically as an adsorbent in the body, pulling out toxins. One type of therapeutic mud is called Moor Mud. Giving the dogs mud baths twice a month would help them, and making a mud pack on my little dog’s breast would help extract toxins from the enlarged area over time. Keeping our beloved pets healthy involves more than just feeding them and giving them water these days. Don’t wait til your pet starts to show toxicity symptoms! Start some of these detox methods this week. Dr. Donna is a clinical nutritionist in Sacramento and has taught detoxification and cleansing to thousands of people over the years. Contact her at 916-649-8323.

When you hear a cat meowing, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

Meowing Because of Boredom is Not Allowed!

Training Cats to Stop Extreme Meowing by Tony Robinson

About the Author

Cat lover Tony Robinson shares tips and techniques for a happy, healthy well-adjusted cat at www.officialcats.com

To retrain your cat, first you will need to get your cat to learn when it is appropriate to meow only when he really needs something. A contented cat will find many things to occupy itself with. This means your cat will do less meowing. A good thing to remember is that cats will not exercise by themselves. Set up a playtime and area to spend with your cat. Bring out the strings, ball, catnip items, or simple homemade items that your cat will love. This will help develop good behavior during the times you are away, busy or do not have time to spend with your cat. Make sure the time you spend with your cat is around the same time of day. A good time is when you come home from work or your busy day that you will want to relax. It is known that cats can help lower blood pressure and help you to relax.

Excess Meowing Answer

The simple answer is to retrain your cat. When the cat is verbalizing, ignore him. When quiet, then reward him. This will let your cat know this is a good behavior. Giving in when your cat is noisy will contribute to bad behavior and lead to an unsatisfactory relationship for both cat and owner.

PETS

Your cat is hungry? This would be a wrong answer! (Excess meowing for your cat can mean a number of things. Is he experiencing discomfort or a medical problems? Is he bored or does your cat want to spend time with you? Of course, he could be hungry but you may not realize that your cat may have learned this habit. Your cat may have been trained unknowingly by you to do excess meowing!

by another animal. If a cat loses its owner, they grieve just as we do after losing a love one. Cats have compassion for other cats. And if your cat has to start sharing you, your home, its toys, its food and water dishes, jealousy becomes a real emotion felt.

Here is the step-by-step process of how to stop the excess meowing habit:

1. If emotions cause a cat to have excessive meowing, know that cat is more difficult to train. Deal with the emotion. 2. Always determine whether your cat is hurt or ill, or if it s a behavior that can be re-learned. Are you giving the cat enough attention? Is your cat satisfied with where he is, who he s with, and what he is doing? 3. Training a cat does take time and patience, just like when children are taught good behavior and you have to ignore their bad behaviors. 4. Reward your cat today for being good. Spend time with your cat and play with him. 5. Feed your cat healthy snacks and food to minimize the possibility of health problems. Most of all, be kind and hug your cat today!

Your Cat’s Purrs Also Give You Clues!

Purring is a way a cat is saying he is contented. Nevertheless, not all purring is a good purr. Cats will purr if they are ill, sick, or dying. Pay close attention to your cat if it is purring is it a warning to you that he is sick? Or is it a way to let other animals know they are a threat? If your cat stops purring at any time, it may be a sign that your cat may be sick with a virus or something else could be wrong. This may be a time to seek a veterinarian. In some cases, when cats get older they may stop purring or the purring is so soft that you are unable to hear it.

Decipher Your Cat’s Emotions

Emotions can also be part of a behavior in your cat. In many cases, we are unable to recognize fear, grief, compassion, and jealousy. These emotions are real to us and real to your cat. For example, your cat may fear being hurt

Simple Solution for Celiac Disease You Must Know By Dr. Donna, Editor

L

ike most people with celiac disease, Dan Garfinkel was troubled with stomach pains, diarrhea, muscle and joint pains, exhaustion other digestive issues, and a foggy memory for years. Since childhood, Dan was ill. In fact, he was so ill he went through times being bedridden and had to continue living with his parents through his 20s. “I had a poor immune system and would catch every cold or flu going around no matter what I did back then,” he confided. “Then I read a story in the newspaper about a woman in Vancouver. She had a sick 19-year-old son troubled by a parasite who couldn’t get out of bed for two whole years. She started giving him a cup of camel milk a day, and saw immediate effects in a few days,” Dan reported.

Long Historical Use of Camel Milk Camel milk has been a beverage drunk by Bedouin tribes since the beginning of time. Researchers report that camel milk is the closest to human milk of any milks. The protein in it is vastly different than cow’s milk protein; it’s much smaller in size. As a result, the milk proteins are able to pass through the intestinal tract more easily for immediate absorption, and the healing begins. Thus, those with milk allergies or lactose intolerance have no problems handling 34 CELEBRATING

camel milk. In fact, this milk is currently being studied for babies and adults suffering from malnutrition in other countries. In addition, it is being studied for use in HIV / Aids patients. The Bedouins subsist on nothing but camel milk at different times of their lives.

reported the findings to a Gastroenterology Conference in Las Vegas. They were quite impressed with the complete reversal of ulcerative colitis changes in the intestinal tract,” he said.

Healing A Difficult Disease Without Difficulty

Camel milk is not pasteurized but a sample of each batch is tested for bacterial content. Camels are not prone to develop the same diseases that cows do. The bacterial test report is included with each batch of camel milk that is shipped out.

So inspired by the story, Dan located a supplier and began drinking his daily cup of camel milk. In two days he saw improvement and for the first time, felt that healing was on the horizon. He continued drinking camel milk for the next several months and within six months became completely functional. He now consumes only half a cup a day. Dan still stays away from wheat, as the structures of the top five grains have been genetically altered, but if he slips up and eats it, his symptoms only last a few days and he’s never bedridden.

What About Proof That It Works? “When I got better, I began collecting all the research studies on camel milk and was really encouraged. I acted as a consultant for Yaniv Ravee, researcher at the Rutgers University in New Jersey. Yaniv tracked a patient with ulcerative colitis via test results, imaging studies and interviews before and after drinking camel milk and then last year

How To Get Camel Milk

The milk is available frozen and can be stored in your freezer until you’re ready to thaw it and drink it. Dan has found a new purpose in life and now works with those who want to use camel milk to stimulate their own healing. He helps them get the camel milk from a camel milk dairy in Pennsylvania, the same place that provided him with the milk that healed his celiac disease. Camel milk has many other healing properties and best of all, it’s totally natural and considered a ‘wild’ food. There’s no GMO in camel milk.
