In the morning, a minimum difference of 45 minutes should be kept between taking cold water bath and breakfast. After a person takes cold water bath, the blood circulation slows down and body relaxes. The glands and muscles also function at a slower rate. It takes about 45 minutes for the glands, muscles and other parts of the body to warm up to their original functioning. Therefore, the lime after bath may be devoted to prayers / meditation. If this time difference is not kept, it will lead to gastric problems. Bear in mind that bath should be taken first and breakfast thereafter.

Hand washing: An easy way to prevent infections Hand washing is a simple habit that can help keep you healthy. Learn the benefits of good hand hygiene, when to wash your hands and how to clean them properly.
H
and washing is a simple habit, something most people do without thinking. Yet hand washing, when done properly, is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick. This simple habit requires only soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer — a cleanser that doesn’t require water. Do you know the benefits of good hand hygiene and when and how to wash your hands properly? ¾¾ The dangers of not washing your hands Despite the proven health benefits of hand washing, many people don’t practice this habit as often as they should — even after using the toilet. Throughout the day you accumulate germs on your hands from a variety of sources, such as direct contact with people, contaminated surfaces, foods, even animals and animal waste. If you don’t wash your hands frequently enough, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. And you can spread these germs to others by touching them or by touching surfaces that they also touch, such as doorknobs. Infectious diseases that are commonly spread through hand-to-hand contact include the common cold, flu and several gastrointestinal disorders, such as infectious diarrhea. While most people will get over a cold, the flu can be much more serious. Some people with the flu, particularly older adults and people with chronic medical problems, can develop pneumonia. The combination of the flu and pneumonia, in fact, is the eighth-leading cause of death among Americans. Inadequate hand hygiene also contributes to

Dr. Chalapathy Professor of General Surgery Vydehi Hospital Whitefield, Bangalore – 66 Ph: 080-28413381/2/3/4 food-related illnesses, such as salmonella and E. coli infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 76 million Americans get a food-borne illness each year. Of these, about 5,000 die as a result of their illness. Others experience the annoying signs and symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. ¾¾ Proper hand-washing techniques Good hand-washing techniques include washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are just as effective as soap and water in cleaning your hands but aren’t as good as alcohol-based sanitizers. Antibacterial soaps have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, these soaps are no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. Using antibacterial soaps may lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to the products’ antimicrobial agents — making it even harder to kill these germs in the future. In general, regular soap is fine. The combination of scrubbing your hands with soap — antibacterial or not — and rinsing them with water loosens and removes bacteria from your hands. ¾¾ Proper hand washing with soap and water Follow these instructions for washing with soap and water: ªª Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid soap or use clean bar soap. Lather well. ªª Rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 to 20 seconds. ªª Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. ªª Rinse well. ªª Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel.

ªª ¾¾
Use a towel to turn off the faucet. Proper use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer Alcohol-based hand sanitizers — which don’t require water — are an excellent alternative to hand washing, particularly when soap and water aren’t available. They’re actually more effective than soap and water in killing bacteria and viruses that cause disease. Commercially prepared hand sanitizers contain ingredients that help prevent skin dryness. Using these products can result in less skin dryness and irritation than hand washing. Not all hand sanitizers are created equal, though. Some “waterless” hand sanitizers don’t contain alcohol. Use only the alcohol-based products. The CDC recommends choosing products that contain at least 60 percent alcohol. ¾¾ To use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer: ªª Apply about 1/2 teaspoon of the product to the palm of your hand. ªª Rub your hands together, covering all surfaces of your hands, until they’re dry. If your hands are visibly dirty, however, wash with soap and water, if available, rather than a sanitizer. ¾¾ When should you wash your hands? Although it’s impossible to keep your bare hands germ-free, there are times when it’s critical to wash your hands to limit the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. ¾¾ Always wash your hands: ªª After using the toilet ªª After changing a diaper — wash the diaperwearer’s hands, too ªª After touching animals or animal waste ªª Before and after preparing food, especially before and immediately after handling raw meat, poultry or fish ªª Before eating ªª After blowing your nose ªª After coughing or sneezing into your hands ªª Before and after treating wounds or cuts ªª Before and after touching a sick or injured person ªª After handling garbage ªª Before inserting or removing contact lenses

When using public restrooms, such as those in airports, train stations, bus stations and restaurants ¾¾ Kids need clean hands, too You can help your children avoid getting sick by insisting that they wash their hands properly and frequently. To get kids into the habit, teach by example. Wash your hands with your children and supervise their hand washing. Place hand-washing reminders at children’s eye level, such as a chart by the bathroom sink for children to mark every time they wash their hands. Make sure the sink is low enough for children to use, or that it has a stool underneath so that children can reach it. Tell your children to wash their hands for as long as it takes them to sing their ABCs, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” or the “Happy Birthday” song. This works especially well with younger children, who may rush when washing their hands. Older children and adolescents also can use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Younger children can use them, too — with an adult’s help. Just make sure the sanitizer has completely dried before your child touches anything. This will avoid ingestion of alcohol from hand-to-mouth contact. Store the container safely away after use. Hand washing is especially important for children who attend child care. Children younger than 3 years in child care are at greater risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, which can easily spread to family members and others in the community. To protect your child’s health, be sure your child care provider promotes sound hygiene, including frequent hand washing or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Ask whether the children are required to wash their hands several times a day — not just before meals. Note, too, whether diapering areas are cleaned after each use and whether eating and diapering areas are well separated. ¾¾ A simple way to stay healthy Hand washing doesn’t take much time or effort, but it offers great rewards in terms of preventing illness. Adopting this simple habit can play a major role in protecting your health. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

pilepsy is called by different terms like FITS, Convulsions, and Seizure etc. It is colloquially called as Apasmara or Moorche Roga.Every year on 26th March people from all over the world wear Purple color to show solidarity with Epilepsy affected patients and their families. A 14 year old girl Cassidy Megan who was herself an epileptic patient in Canada initiated this expression. From then on schools, colleges, hospitals and organizations all over the world have continued this unique awareness programme. ªª Epilepsy is common brain disorder and not a mental illness. In most cases it is a chronic disorder. ªª 1 in 1000 people are affected by epilepsy worldwide ªª According to WHO 50 Million people suffer from this globally. ªª It is estimated that there are 10 million epilepsy patients in India ªª 80% of the epilepsy patients in the world reside in developing countries and more than 50% of these patients have no appropriate access to treatment. ªª 70 % of all the epilepsies respond to drugs ªª In 70% of the epileptics no definite cause can be demonstrated. ªª In different cities of India the prevalence varies from 4 to 9 per 1000 population, though the prevalence rates in rural areas is higher. ªª In Bangalore the prevalence is 9 per 1000 population. Seizure is due to sudden onset of excessive electrical activity in the brain. It usually lasts for 1-3 mins. After a seizure nearly 40 to 50 % will not have any recurrence. Tendency for recurrent seizures with a secondary cause is called Epilepsy. There can be alteration in sensation, behavior, and weakness of limbs or altered level of consciousness during this time.

Epilepsy can be seen at all ages and both sexes. Commonly seen in childhood and old age. The epilepsy can be of various types ranging from simple blinking of eyes to total loss of consciousness. ¾¾ Common trigger factors for epileptic seizures are 1. Lack of adequate sleep 2. Emotional stress 3. Watching visual flickers 4. Irregular medication Most epileptic patients can lead a normal life, marry, have children, achieve academic and professional experience, play sports, etc like anyone else with proper medication and advice. Epilepsy is a clinical diagnosis, meaning, it mainly depends on the description of the events given by the bystanders and the patient and the assessment done by the Clinician. The most important investigations done are EEG/CT SCAN/MRI SCAN of Brain along with a few blood investigations. It is extremely important to note that all the tests can be normal despite the presence of epilepsy and it is dangerous to avoid medications if all the tests are normal. Majority of the patients require long term medication. Most respond to drug therapy and in most cases the drugs need to be taken for 2-3 years. In about 25-30%, drugs will not be beneficial and epilepsy surgery is the next option. ¾¾ Do’s and Don’ts during an Epileptic Attack 1. Do not try to stop the attack by restraining the patient 2. Roll the patient to a side to prevent tongue fall and choking 3. Protect the patient from getting injured 4. Don’t put any objects into the mouth 5. Discourage driving/swimming alone or handling machines while on drugs. Even now the public consider, epilepsy as a curse, possession by evil spirits, insanity and bad omen. In many parts it is projected to be a contagious disease. Unfortunately, epilepsy patients face social discrimination, emotional distress and discrimination at work place, schools, organization and social functions. The Epilepsy Awareness Programme through the PURPLE DAY aims to deny the myths and fight for acceptance of Epilepsy patients as part of the mainstream society. On this occasion the need of the hour is for all to understand the needs of the epilepsy patients and help them to lead a normal social life like all others. Hope all the state governments in the country recognize this health issue and chalk a National Epilepsy Control Programme to effectively, diagnose, investigate and medicate these patients and open centers all over the country to maintain a National Registry. The hospital organized a function to create awareness among our students, staff and the visiting patients and their attenders. Free medicines were distributed to the patients who participated in the event. The Neuro Sciences Department of Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences in Whitefield had organized a large EPILEPSY AWARENESS PROGRAMME by wearing PURPLE on march 26. On this occasion, the DIRECTOR of the Hospital Mrs. Kalpaja D released purple Balloons and a painting competition for SPECIAL CHILDREN was held with epilepsy as the theme.

Every day, 200 women in India die due to cervical cancer Cervical Cancer is the No.1 cause of Cancer-related death amongst women in India and is even more common than Breast Cancer! In fact, every year, more than 72,000 women in India die due to Cervical Cancer. Sadly - 1 out of 4 women in the world dying of Cervical Cancer is an Indian.
¾¾
What is Cervical Cancer? Cervical Cancer is a cancer of the Cervix. The Cervix is located at the entrance of the uterus and prevents infections from reaching the uterus. ¾¾ How does one get Cervical Cancer? This cancer is not hereditary. Cervical Cancer is caused by infection with a virus- the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) -which infects the Cervix. The virus is common and is transmitted through contact of the genital area. Not all HPV infections cause cancer, and although most of them clear naturally, some can lead to cancer. ¾¾ Who is likely to get Cervical Cancer? Younger women are at the highest risk of acquiring an HPV infection that might lead to Cervical Cancer in the future. However, every woman is at risk of Cervical Cancer, regardless of her age. That is why, it is best to protect girls as early as possible. ¾¾ How is Cervical Cancer detected? Cervical Cancer generally shows no symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. Screening tests (e.g. Pap smear) can detect early signs of the infection that causes Cervical Cancer. However, screening cannot prevent the HPV infection from happening in the first place. Act today
Ask your doctor for protection against cervical cancer.
ªª
Protection is now possible against Cervical Cancer. Vaccination along with screening offers the best possible protection against Cervical Cancer ªª Who should get vaccinated? Vaccination is best given as early as possible in adolescent girls as this is when the best immune response to vaccination is achieved However, since all women remain at risk of Cervical Cancer, ask your doctor if Vaccination is suitable for you too. ªª How is vaccination given? Vaccination is given as 3 injections over a 6 month period.

Dr. Seema he cornea-clear, front part of the eye, through which light passes,is subjected to many infections and to injury from exposure and foreign objects. Infections and injury can cause inflammation of the cornea –KERATITIS. Tissue loss because of inflammation produces-ULCER. Ulcer can be centrally located, greatly affecting the vision or it can also be located in the periphery. Description:-The most common cause of corneal ulcer is-micro- organisms; but mostly they cannot invade the healthy cornea with adequate tears and functioning eyelids. They gain access because of injury, which impairs the above defence mechanisms. A corneal injury from a foreign body, inoculates micro-organisms directly through the outer layer, as with the skin. Chemicals can inflame the cornea and hence it is easy for micro-organisms’ invasion ¾¾ Predisposing Factorsªª Use of Contact Lens ªª Eyelid or Tear Function Impairment. Summer life
Dressing in Summer Heat T
hose who enjoy pleasant summers do not have much to worry about as far as selecting clothing for the workplace. However, those who face what we call a “long hot summer” face some clothing dilemmas. The dilemma comes in deciding what to wear to work. In some cases you can carry a sweater or jacket for when you get to the cooled indoors. Some people enjoy the coolness that air conditioning brings, but for others it is a problem. Layering your clothes as you go from hot to cold places helps, too. Women can look for outfits that include sweater sets, jackets over dresses, etc. Women may choose to wear sundresses without hose and sandals. Other clothing choices include tank tops, very short skirts, slides, mules, opened-toed shoes, and even flip flops. This sure helps them to stay cool when they are outdoors. However, it presents problems in the work environment as this does not constitute proper work attire. There may be some offices that allow a dress down look especially in locations where summers are hot. So what is appropriate? Short or three-quarter length sleeves on a blouse, loose-fitting long-flowing skirts, summer weight hose, or thigh high hose, and basic pumps are more appropriate. Lighter weight fabrics help, too. Choose natural fibers like cotton, rayon, linen or silk. With the advances in technology, many synthetics mimic linen and cotton so you don’t have to deal with wrinkling that often occurs in natural fibers. Many new fabrics also resist staining. This is a significant breakthrough especially since light summertime colors make stains more visible. This will also help cut down on cleaning. Men also like to wear clothing that makes them cooler. A business suit can be very warm on the

body. What can be done to feel cool in the heat? Choose tropical weight fabrics such as four, five or six ounces of wool. Often lighter colors make you feel cooler, too. In the hot humid summers of the southern states you often see men in light blue seersucker suits, tan poplin suits, and off-white linen suits. Men should wear socks. You may think it is cooler to go without socks, but it looks unprofessional. Cotton socks also feel cooler than nylon or other synthetics. Loose woven shirt fabrics keep the air flowing about the body for a cooling effect. If your shirt was constructed to be worn inside your pants, then by all means tuck it in your pants and wear a belt if you have belt loops. It is still important to wear a long sleeve shirt to maintain a professional look when you wear a tie. If you start to feel warm it is best to roll-up your sleeves. This will make you look like a hard worker. If you are able to wear a short sleeve shirt to the office, please do not wear a tie with it. You will see stores selling this look but opt for wearing only a long sleeve shirt with a tie and hold onto your credibility. There is something about too much skin showing that takes away from a professional look. ¾¾ Women’s Fashion Trends for summer Celebrities know

that vintage is where it’s at and that’s why you see them wearing an array of garments that appear to be one-of-a-kind. Peasant blouses, classic dresses, trousers, and handbags are a steal at secondhand shops. Besides that, you’ll see many new trends that are turning heads yet have affordable price tags. ¾¾ Seasonal Colors ÂÂ Colors making a splash this spring are orange, aqua, and sunny yellow. Purple beats out red as the top, hot color that will surely get you noticed. ÂÂ The palette for formalwear offers up powdery pastels and classy, ever-so-trendy silver, gold, and white so you can dress up in style. Teens love these colors for prom! ÂÂ Silver and gray replace black for warm weather neutrals. Whether matte or metallic, these two colors add dimension to otherwise solid styles. ÂÂ If you’re partial to black, forgo the monochrome look and pair it up with white for a current color combo. ÂÂ Classic tan and military green go great together, not only for solid pieces but for the very trendy camouflage styles as well. Whatever your choice, these colors need simple accessories such as a belt or gold chain. Styles and Patterns ÂÂ Fashion trends for woman this summer will showcase frilly and feminine styles with sheer fabrics and lace accents. In addition to playing peek-a-boo, we’re seeing exposed midriffs as shirts go shorter. Proceed with caution. ÂÂ Sleeves take a backseat to this year’s sleeveless, off-the-shoulder, and cutout designs -- making shoulders a perfect place for a light dusting of bronzing powder. ÂÂ Shirt dresses are flirty and give you lots of movement on a spring day or hot summer night. Floral and playful prints add a variety of color and can help you look just a bit younger. ÂÂ Fashionable, military inspired clothing shows your support and is an instant hit for casual wear. Take your pick from light, cotton cargos, camouflage, walking shorts, and belted jackets. Fashion Accessories, Jewelry, and Shoes ÂÂ Just a few valuable accessories are all you need. Belts, sashes, and head scarves are abundant this spring and work well in moderation. ÂÂ Gold is making a comeback, revealing itself in gold-silver combos in jewelry. Great for the girl who can’t decide, she can have both at once! ÂÂ Cuff styles are in for watches and bracelets. Too bulky for you? Wear just the right amount of bangle bracelets to complete your ensemble. ÂÂ Size counts when it comes to handbags. Many celebrities prefer leather carryalls and designer tote bags to lug around their worldly possessions. The extra space is handy for new celebrity moms who refuse to forgo fashion to practicality. ÂÂ The runway is showing shoes that have substance with more sole and heel, which elongates legs and adds height. High heels and weaved wedges are a just the thing for summer, casual and dressy all at once. ÂÂ For those who prefer flats and a very trendy style, opt for those with pointy toes. Want to be a tad more conservative? Choose flat sandals in neutral colors that will go with just about anything. Strappy sandals are always fun for long weekend getaways.

Importance of Eyes
How much do you know about your eyes?
The school going years are the formative years for determining one’s physical, intellectual & behavioral development. Any problem in the vision during the formative years can hamper the intellectual development, maturity & performance of a person in his future life.

Eyes are the most precious of our sense organs. They contribute greatly to one’s learning capacities right since childhood. Good vision contributes greatly to the strength of health & wits. Children usually don’t complain of defective vision. They may not even be aware of their problems. They adjust to the poor eyesight by moving closer to the black board, holding the books closer to their eyes, squeezing the eyes and even avoiding work requiring visual concentration. This evades early detection. Timely detection of these problems and their correction by spectacles (or surgery) can tremendously improve the child’s potential during his formative years. Visual impairment can be a drag in the life of a child, his family and the society. Periodic screening of children helps in early identification of visual defects and prescriptions/use of corrective spectacles.

About the Eye What is an eye? Which part of your body lets you read your favourite book, check out a rainbow, and see a football heading your way? Which part lets you cry when you’re sad and makes tears to protect itself ? Which part has muscles that adjust to let you focus on things that are close up or far away? If you guessed the eye, you’re right! Your eyes are at work from the moment you wake up to the moment you close them to go to sleep. They take in tons of information about the world around you — shapes, colours, movements, and more. Then they send the information to your brain for processing so the brain knows what’s going on outside of your body. You can see that the eye is pretty amazing. So, come on let’s take a tour of its many parts. ¾¾ The Parts of the Eye ªª The cornea is a round, transparent dome that acts as the outer window of the eye. It is the structure that focuses the light that enters the eye. The coloured part of the eye is known as iris. The iris lies between the cornea and the crystalline lens. The color is due to the presence of a pigment. The basic iris colors are blue, green and brown. Majority of humans have varying shades of these colours. It is composed of connective tissues and smooth muscle fibres. ªª The composition of the iris enables it to dilate or contract the pupil, which in turn controls the amount of light that falls on the retina. ªª The lens is that part of the human eye that is

located immediately behind the iris. Its role is to focus the light and move towards the retina. ªª The retina is the innermost layer of the eye. It consists of nerve tissue that senses the light entering the eye. Its function is to send impulses through the optic nerve back to the brain, where it gets translated into the images that we see. ªª The sclera is the whitish, opaque part of the eye, which is connected to the cornea. Its role is to provide protection and meet the purpose of attachment for the extraocular muscles that enables eye to move. ¾¾ How do our eyes work? Every day we see things with our eyes. We see the sky, trees, cats, birds and the faces of our friends, but how do we see all that? How do our eyes work? Now, this is how our eyes work and let us see things: Light enters our eye through the pupil. The cornea, at the front of our eye, bends the light. The light passes through the lens to the retina. It then focuses on the retina, like a little picture of whatever we are looking at, but it is upside down! Nerve cells in the retina send that “Image” to our brain. The brain has the ability to interpret that the image is upside down and we see it right side up.

LIFESTYLE S
edentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity. A person who lives a sedentary lifestyle may colloquially be known as a couch potato. It is commonly found in both the developed and developing world. Sedentary activities include sitting, reading, watching television, playing certain video games, and computer use for much of the day with little or no vigorous physical exercise. A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to many preventable causes of death. People who sit more than 11 hours per day have a 40 percent higher risk than those that sit fewer than 4 hours per day. However those that exercise at least 5 hours per week are as healthy as those that sit fewer than 4 hours per day. (David W. Dunstan, PhD; Neville Owen, PhD, Arch Intern Med. 2012;172(6):500-501). A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can contribute to or be a risk factor for: Anxiety, Cardiovascular disease, Mortality in elderly men by 30% and double the risk in elderly women, Deep vein thrombosis, Depression, Diabetes, Colon cancer, High blood pressure, Obesity, Osteoporosis, Lipid disorders and Kidney stones. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates that consumers should adopt healthier lifestyle behaviour, and has put international strategies in place that promote healthier eating patterns, in support of a healthier lifestyle. (World Health Organisation. Global strategy on diet, health and physical activity). Healthy lifestyles such as physical activity and a healthy diet are important to both prevent and manage chronic illness. It is critical that every nations target health promotion efforts to those who bear the greatest burden of disease – those from low-income, ethnically diverse backgrounds, and those with chronic conditions (McGruder et al. 2004). There is a welldocumented relationship between physical activity and good health, prevention of disease and improved self-management of disease for Latinos in the USA (Steffen-Batey et al. 2000). Lifestyle refers to a way of life or the way a person lives to one’s own ability. A healthy lifestyle is defined as “orientation toward the prevention of health problems, and the maximisation

of personal well-being”. (Kraak VI, Story, M. A public health perspective on healthy lifestyles and public-private partnerships for global childhood obesity prevention. J Am Dietetic Association. 2010;110(2):192-200). Lifestyle is expressed in both work and leisure behavior patterns and (on an individual basis) in activities, attitudes, interests, opinions, values, and allocation of income. It also reflects people’s self image or self concept; Lifestyle is a composite of motivations, needs, and wants and is influenced by factors such as culture, family, reference groups, and social class. ¾¾ LIFESTYLE AS A MEDICINE The field of lifestyle medicine has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last two decades. In the 1999 landmark textbook entitled “Lifestyle Medicine,” editor James Rippe, MD, expressed the hope it would open an entire new branch of medicine. As per the The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), presently lifestyle is considered as the medicine and the lifestyle Medicine (LM) means the use of lifestyle interventions in the management of disease. A growing body of scientific evidence has demonstrated that lifestyle intervention is an essential component in the treatment of chronic disease that can be as effective as medication, but without the risks and unwanted sideeffects. Such interventions include: ªª diet (nutrition) ªª exercise ªª stress management ªª smoking cessation ªª and a variety of other non-drug modalities LM is becoming the preferred modality for not only the prevention but the treatment of most chronic diseases, including: ªª type-2 diabetes ªª coronary heart disease ªª hypertension ªª obesity ªª insulin resistance syndrome ªª osteoporosis ªª and many types of cancer

IFESTYLE MEDICINE AS A CLINICAL L DISCIPLINE Preventive services are generally not recommended or adopted unless they are cost-effective in the population in which they are to be implemented. Since preventive services accrue their benefit primarily by reducing costs from morbidity and mortality, this costeffectiveness criteria is reasonable. Treatment services, on the other hand, are recommended and adopted when there is an evidence-based medical indication for treatment. The optimal treatment and management of chronic disease incorporates lifestyle interventions that are typically most effectively administered on an outpatient basis. Brief, intensive group interventions in a residential setting are often more effective and may be necessary for severe or intractable cases. While LM interventions typically do not emphasize prescription medications, they frequently require re-titration and/ or reduction of medications prescribed before the lifestyle intervention. It is often necessary to reduce insulin dosing in patients with diabetes who receive lifestyle interventions and reduce dosing of anti-hypertensive medications for patients with hypertension. Others may also require a change of medications. For example, a person with type-2 diabetes may

be able to discontinue insulin but need metformin, a thiazolidinedione (TZD), or a sulfonylurea. In some cases lifestyle interventions are more effective when augmented with appropriate medications, as with tobacco use where cessation is 2-3 times more successful when buproprion is prescribed with the lifestyle modifications. Lifestyle medicine clinicians emphasize the use of lifestyle intervention in the treatment of disease. While the practice of Lifestyle Medicine (LM) incorporates many public health principles and approaches, it remains primarily a clinical discipline. Recent clinical research provides a strong evidential basis for the preferential use of lifestyle interventions as first-line therapy. (e.g. The Lifestyle Heart Trial, the Lyon Diet Heart Study and the Dietary Portfolio study) This research is moving lifestyle from prevention only to include treatment--from an intervention used to prevent disease to an intervention used to treat disease. This represents a fundamental change in the way medicine views lifestyle medicine, but one not yet well understood or appreciated. ¾¾ EVIDENCE-BASIS OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE ªª ADA: Type 2 Diabetics Can Alter Lifestyles: A short-term lifestyle modification program for overweight diabetic patients seen in clinical practice showed long-term benefits for many of the participants, researchers reported here. ªª Mediterranean Diet Helps Prevent, Slow Metabolic Syndrome: Patients who eat a Mediterranean diet -- rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil -- lowered prevalence and progression of metabolic syndrome and its components, according to results from a metaanalysis of 50 studies. ªª Fish Oil Has Benefits in Heart Failure: Supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids improved left ventricular function in patients with mild-to-moderate chronic heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial showed. ªª Increased Activity Helps in OA: Increasing physical activity over two years can improve function and even walking speed among adults with osteoarthritis of the knee -- regardless of their level of activity, a large prospective study found. ªª Lifestyle Intervention Helps Even Most Obese: Even the most severely obese adults derived important clinical benefits from a lifestyle intervention that combined dietary restriction with either six or 12 months of physical exercise, a yearlong randomized study showed. ªª Sleep Makes the Body Leaner : Diet and exercises are important factors in a healthy lifestyle, but a third factor -- sleep -- may be the real key to eliminating fat, according to a small study. ªª Resistance Exercise May Lower Need for Insulin in GDM : Resistance exercise (RE) may lower the need for insulin in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), according to the results of a randomized controlled trial reported online September 23 in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Dr. Loren P Saldanha dr.lorenpsaldanha@gmail.com Psoriasis is a non – contagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction. It is characterised by thick, red, silvery, scaled patches of skin. The dry flakes and skin scales are thought to result from the rapid build – up of skin cells. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalps. This disease affects both sexes equally and usually first appears at the age ranging from 15 to 30 years, although it may appear at any age. It is, however, rare in infancy and old age.
S
ome people have mild psoriasis (small, faint dry skin patches) that they may not even suspect that they have a medical skin condition. Others have severe psoriasis where virtually their entire body is fully covered with thick, red, scaly skin. People with more severe psoriasis may have social embarrassment, job stress and other personal issue because of the appearance of their skin. ¾¾ What does psoriasis look like? Psoriasis may have different appearances. It may be small flattened bumps, large thick plaques of raised skin, red patches, and pink mildly dry skin to big flakes of dry skin that flake off. There are several types of psoriasis including psoriasis vulgaris (common type), guttate psoriasis (small, drop like spots), inverse psoriasis (in the folds like the underarms, navel and buttocks), and pustular psoriasis (liquid – filled yellowish small blisters). Additionally, a separate entity affecting primarily the palms and the soles is known as palmoplantar psoriasis.

Sometimes pulling of one of these small dry white flakes of skin causes a tiny blood spot on the skin. This is medically referred to as a special diagnostic sign in psoriasis called the Auspitz sign. Genital lesions, especially on the head of the penis, are common. Psoriasis ion moist areas like the naval area between the buttocks (intergluteal folds) may look like flat red patches. These atypical appearances may be confused with other skin conditions like fungal infections, yeast infection, skin irritation, or bacterial Staph infection. On the nails, it can look like very small pits (pinpoint depressions or white spots on the nails) or larger yellowish – brown separations of the nail bed called “oil – spots”. Nail psoriasis may be confused with and incorrectly diagnosed as a fungal nail infection. On the scalp, it may look like severe dandruff with dry flakes and red areas of skin. It may be difficult to tell the difference between scalp psoriasis and seborrhoea (dandruff). However, the treatment is often very similar for the condition. Symptoms: Generally, the skin of the person suffering from psoriasis appears red and irritated and may be covered with bright silvery scales. Sometimes there is also a little itching. Areas usually involved are elbows, knees, the skin behind the ears, trunk and scalp. The disease may also affect the underarm and genital areas. The lesions vary in size from minute papules only just visible, to sheets covering large parts of the body. Quite often, they are discs from 1.5 cm to several centimetres in size. The lesions of psoriasis are always dry and

rarely become infected. Causes: The modern medical system has not been able to establish the exact cause of psoriasis. Recent studies have shown that psoriasis involves an abnormality in the mechanism in which the skin grows and replaces itself. This abnormality is related to the metabolism of amino-acids, the protein chemicals which are nature’s basic building blocks for the reproduction of cell tissues. Heredity also plays a role in the development of psoriasis as it tends to occur in families. About 30 per cent of the patients have a family history of the disease. The factors that aggravate and precipitate the outbreak of psoriasis are injury to the skin in the form of cuts, burns, minor abrasions, changes in the seasons, physical and emotional stress, infections and use of certain medicines for the treatment of other diseases. ¾¾ Treatment: ªª Since psoriasis is a metabolic disease, a cleansing juice fast for about seven days is always desirable in the beginning of the treatment. Carrots, beets, cucumbers and grapes may be used for juices. Juices of citrus fruits should be avoided. The warm water enema should be used daily to cleanse the bowels during the fast. After the juice fast, the patient should adopt the diet of three basic food groups, namely (i)seeds, nuts and grains, (ii)vegetables and (iii) fruits, with emphasis on raw seeds and nuts, especially sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and plenty of organically grown raw vegetables and fruits. ªª All animal fats, including milk, butter and eggs should be avoided. Refined or processed foods and foods containing hydrogenated fats or white sugar, all condiments, tea and coffee, should also be avoided. After noticeable improvement, goat’s milk, yogurt and homemade cottage cheese may be added to the diet. Juice fasts may be repeated after four weeks on diet. Vitamin E therapy has been found effective in the treatment of psoriasis. The patient should use this vitamin in therapeutic doses from 200 to 800 I.U. a day. It will help reduce itching and scabs. Lecithin is considered a remarkable remedy for psoriasis. The patient may take six to nine lecithin capsules a day – two or three capsules before

or after each meal. In the form of granules, it may be taken four table spoonfuls daily for two months. It may thereafter be reduced to two table spoonfuls. Too frequent baths should be avoided. Soap should not be used. ªªRegular sea water baths and application of sea water externally over the affected parts once a day are beneficial. The hot Epsom salts bath has proved valuable in psoriasis. Three full baths should be taken weekly until the trouble begins to subside. The number of baths thereafter may be reduced to two weekly and finally to one. The affected areas should also be bathed twice in hot water containing Epsom salt. After the bath a little olive oil may be applied. The skin should be kept absolutely clean by daily dry friction or sponge. In many cases, psoriasis responds well to sunlight. The affected parts should be frequently exposed to the sun. The daily use of a sunlamp or ultra – violet light are also beneficial. ªª Cabbage leaves have been successfully used in the form of compresses in the treatment of psoriasis. The thickest and greenest outer leaves are most effective for use as compresses. They should be thoroughly washed in warm water and dried with a towel. The leaves should be made flat, soft and smooth by rolling them with a rolling pin after removing the thick veins. They should be warmed and then applied smoothly to the affected part in an overlapping manner. A pad of soft wooden cloth should be put over it. The whole compress should then be secured with an elastic bandage. ªª The use of mud packs in the treatment of psoriasis has also been found highly beneficial. The packs are made by mixing the clay with a little water and applying to the affected areas. After the clay has dried, it is removed and fresh pack applied. Mud packs are eliminative in their action. They absorb and remove the toxins from the deceased areas. The patient should undertake plenty of regular exercise in fresh air, especially exposing the affected parts, and deep breathing exercises. He should avoid all nervous tension and should have adequate rest.

Tips to restore FERTILITY EIGHTY million people worldwide suffer from infertility. There is a wealth of information these days regarding assisted reproductive techniques, but sadly enough natural techniques are coming closer to unreality. Traditional and medical wisdom dictates that women should finish having their babies by the time they are 30, for fertility levels drop substantially after this age. 26
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
Women are, now by choice or circumstances postponing pregnancy. To predict a woman’s or man’s reproductive life span and answer that anxiety-inducing question that plagues so many couples these days – how many fertile years are still left? – Is really mystifying. On an average female fertility declines from age 30. The end of fertility is reached at age of 40. And it takes another 5 years before menopause is reached. Have you been trying to conceive without any success for several months. The recommendations are based upon the conclusion of many studies. In some cases, there are genuine medical reasons on the female or the male side. Appropriate treatment to correct the problem with the following tips will set it right. See that a desire of a child does not potentially spoil your relationship: Radha and Ravi were trying to have a baby for years with no success. Each of them thought the other was the cause of the problem. All this because their mind was set upon having a baby. Making love was such a mechanical affair and rest of the time they spent like strangers. Things went so wrong that one day they even thought of separating. If you are having problems conceiving address the issue as a team: When we are in love our body is flooded with love chemicals. The relationship between husband and wife is unique and both partners should foster it and protect it to have a complete married experience. Addressing this issue as a team gives a boost to the confidence and makes thing easier. ªª Avoid alcohol: Alcohol is not pregnancy friendly and this is one of the pleasures you have to give up if you are trying to have a baby. Would-be fathers have to be careful because the quality of the sperms decline and they are not as numerous or as mobile as they have to be. The performance also is poor

because they have erectile problems. Mom has to be extra careful because consuming alcohol before conception is harmful and can result in long-term damage. Make love more often: The simplest formula to increase the chances of your conception is to make love more often. Waiting for that statistically worked out date showing high fertile period may not show high prospects especially if you are forcing yourself in doing so. Conceiving a child should not be the sole reason for making love. Keep your environment friendly: A smoke-free lifestyle, building physical activities into your daily routine, using natural food over processed food and discovering activities which help us relax and stay connected with family and friends are some facts to keep a friendly environment. Do not wait too long to plan for a baby: The older the couple becomes the less likely they are to conceive. Factors such as general health, and weight can be just as important as age, a young obese woman might be less capable of conceiving than an older counterpart who is in perfect health. Fertility is at its peak at 25. After 30 it gradually declines. After 40 chances of conception decrease, the quality of egg diminishes and chances of complications in pregnancy rise. The same applies to men too. Exercises good for fertility: Regular performance of exercise is a good hormone regulator and good for fertility. It causes lightness of the body, improves your performance level in all fields, reduces body excess fat, gives you a good physique, pacifies your disturbed bioenergy, adds to your fertility health and promotes metabolism. It stimulates and gives the day a strong start. Perseverance increases chances of conception: Doctors as always remind couples who are keen on starting a family to be patient. Remember that you can increase your chances of conception through perseverance. Boost your libido: If you are feeling tired and

romance seems crushed by those day-to-day preoccupations go for well-known herbs like onion and ginger. These drugs hogh not love potions will make you feel hot. It calms tension, stimulates the senses and is great for relieving nausea tiredness and chills. Don’t expect miracles but it does contain genuine active ingredients. Keep your bedroom luscious, alluring and sensual: To promote harmonious and fulfilling sexual communication keep the energy of your bedroom fresh and romantic. A beautiful dressed bed with your favorite fragrance sprayed on it, that feels like heaven, curtains with bead work and lace work for the windows to give that elegant look. Mirrors make your room more sensual. Keep a love CD at your fingertips for it is one of the easiest ways to elevate your mood. Keep your moods high by that gentle touch to each other: Do you remember the first time you and your spouse came together? The act was filled with hugging, kissing, sex talk and fondling each other trying to explore the body. There are very sensual love spots on your partner’s body just like we have beauty spots. Get a good night sleep: This is the time your body regenerates itself in order to be on top form during the day. If you deprive it, the body soon starts malfunctioning. Sleep is absolutely essential for health and must be given prime importance in preparation too. Learn to relax: Work out a relaxation programmed to de-stress your life if you are keen on starting a family. It’s time that stress can trigger a series of physical reactions and is one of the greatest killers of the modern age. Stress disturbs the production of eggs in the ovaries, disturb periods and one also loses the desire to make love. ªªJust say no to drugs: Drugs of all kinds those, prescribed by the doctor or sold over the counter, can have a profound effect on fertility for men and women. ªªIf you are not conceiving, consult your doctor: Some medical causes of infertility need treatment. Women may need treatment if they have suffered from menstrual problems, pelvic infections, have undergone gynecological surgery or a complicated case of appendicitis, or endometriosis. Men should see a doctor if they have suffered from under activity of the testicles, testicles not dropping in early adolescence, inflammation of the testicles, venereal diseases, hernia, excessive weight gain or pre-diabetic. ªªAvoid smoking: Smoking not only causes deadly diseases like cancer but damages the genetic structure of the sperm and ovum. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Vegetarianism T
he word “ Vegetarian “ was coined by the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom in about 1847. The word does not come from vegetable as is generally assumed : It is a derivation of the Latin word ‘ vegetari ‘ which means to enliven. The practice of vegetarianism, however, goes far back in history. Many noted philosophers and religious teachers urged their followers to avoid a flesh diet. Brahmanism, Jainism , Zoroastrianism and Buddhism acknowledged the sacredness of life and the need to live without causing suffering ; so did many of the early Christians. There are various types of vegetarians. “ Vegans “ are the strictest vegetarians who eat only plant foods and exclude al l animal by-products such as eggs, milk, cheese, curd, butter, ghee and even honey. There are “ lacto vegetarians “ who eat plant foods as well as dairy products and “ lacto – avo vegetarians “ who eat eggs besides plant foods and dairy products. There are even fish – eating vegetarians. The common factor among them is that they do not eat the flesh of warm – blooded animals. Meat seems to have assumed an exaggerated importance nutritionally. It is generally mistakenly

believed that nutritional deficiencies , especially of proteins and vitamin B12 and poor health may result if animal foods are eliminated. Studies however, have indicated to health problems or deficiency diseases for those on a vegetarian diet. Of the 22 amino acids – the essential components of proteins – needed by the body for its normal functioning, only nine need be supplied by the diet as the body synthesis the remaining 13. The body can use 100 percent of this protein if all ten amino acids are in ideal proportions. If, however, one or more of the essential amino acids are present in less than the ideal amount, the value of the entire protein is reduced in the same proportions. On a quality rating scale of 1 to 100, egg protein is 95, milk is 82, meat and poultry are 67, fish 80, grains are between 50 to 70 and legumes, nuts and seeds are between 40 and 60. The so – called protein deficiency in a vegetarian diet is in fact more imaginary than real as the contribution of the protein value of the green vegetables has been ignored and the true protein requirement is less than that assumed. Green vegetable protein is as high in quality as milk protein and thus makes a very valuable contribution to the vegetarian’s protein nutrition. The high quality of protein balances the lower quality of other vegetarian proteins such as nuts and beans. The recommended daily allowance of 70 value proteins is 44 grams per day for women and 56 for men. Researchers have now discovered that the actual protein requirement is much less, being 15 grams per day of 100 value protein or 21.5 grams of 70 value protein or 30 grams of 50 value protein. A wholesome vegetarian diet can, therefore, easily meet the body’s protein needs. Moreover, it is possible to combine two low – value plant proteins to get a protein of higher quality. Thus , wheat which has a deficiency in the amino – acid lysine but an abundance of sulphur

containing amino - acids can be combined with beans which have the opposite enrichment combination. Taken together, they complement each other to form a complete protein. As regards the adequacy of B12 nutrition, lacto – avo vegetarians and lacto – vegetarians should not feel concerned on this score, as the B12 needs can be easily supplied by dairy products and eggs. A quarter litre of milk or 100 grams of cheese or 1 egg per day will supply the recommended daily allowance. This vitamin once eaten is stored in the liver. Vegans, however, do not get this vitamin in their food, yet reliable scientific studies have found no evidence of B12 deficiency diseases. It is therefore, presumed that this vitamin can be synthesised in the body. ¾¾ Auto – Intoxication Most diseases of the human body are caused by auto – intoxication or self – poisoning . The flesh of animals increases the burden of the organs of elimination and overloads the system with animal waste matter and poisons. Chemical analysis has proved that uric acid and other uremic poisons contained in the animal body are almost identical to caffeine, there and nicotine, the poisonous stimulating principles of coffee, tea and tobacco. This explains why meat stimulates the animal passions and creates a craving for liquor, tobacco and other stronger stimulants. Excessive uric acid resulting from meat – eating also causes diseases such as rheumatism, Bright’s disease, kidney stones, gout and gall stones. Meat proteins cause putrefaction twice as rapidly as do vegetable proteins. The morbid matter of the dead animal body is foreign and uncongenial to the excretory organs of man. It is much harder for them to eliminate the waste matter of an animal carcass than that of the human body. Moreover, the formation of ptomaine or corpse poisons begins immediately after the death of the animal and meat and poultry are usually kept in cold storage for many days and even months before they reach the kitchen. Another powerful influence tends to poison the flesh of slaughtered animals. As is well known, emotions of worry, fear and anger actually poison blood and tissues. Imagine the excitable condition of animals after many days of travel, closely packed in shaking vehicles – hungry , thirsty, scared enrooted to the slaughter houses. Many die even before the end of their journey. Others are driven half dead with fear and exhaustion to the slaughter pans, their instinctive fear of death augmented by the sight and odour of the blood shambles. Flesh is often a carrier of disease germs. Diseases of many kinds are on the increase in the animals, making flesh foods more and more unsafe. People are continually eating flesh that may contain tuberculosis and cancerous germs. Often animals are taken to the market and sold for food when they are so diseased that their owners do not wish to keep them any longer. And

some of the processes of fattening them to increase their weight and consequently their market value , produce disease. Shut away from light and pure air, breathing the atmosphere of filthy stables, fattening on decaying foods, the entire body now becomes contaminated with foul matter. ¾¾ Benefits of Vegetarianism A vegetarian diet can have many nutritional benefits, if it is rich in fruits and vegetables, and contains moderate amounts of seeds, nuts, whole grains and legumes. One of the main benefits of a proper vegetarian diet is its low caloric content in relation to the bulk supplied, which helps maintain ideal weight. Another benefit of the vegetarian diet is the much lower intake of fat, if dairy products, seeds and nuts are eaten sparingly. This accounts for lower serum cholesterol levels found in vegetarians, which considerably reduces the risk of developing heart diseases and breast and colon cancer. A third nutritional advantage of the vegetarian diet is its high fibre content. Fibre, being indigestible, increases the bulk of the faces, keeps them soft and makes them easy to expel. One study has indicated that lacto – avo vegetarians consume twice as much and vegans four times as much fibre as non – vegetarians . High fibre intake has been associated with decreased risks of diseases of the colon, appendicitis, cancer of the colon and rectum, hiatus hernia, piles and varicose veins. McCarrison, one of the greatest authorise on food, has outlined a perfect diet. According to him, “ a perfectly constituted diet is one in which the principal ingredients are milk, milk products, any whole cereal grain or mixture of cereal grains, green leafy vegetables and fruits. These are the protective foods. They make good the defects of other constituents of the diet, protect the body against infection and disease of various kinds, and their use in sufficient quantity ensures physical efficiency. “ Vegetarianism is thus a system based on scientific principles and has proved adequate for the best nutrition free from the poisons and bacteria of diseased animals. It is the best diet for man’s optimum, physical, mental and spiritual development. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Male sexual problems
32
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
sexual problem, or sexual dysfunction, refers to a problem during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity. The sexual response cycle has four phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. While research suggests that sexual dysfunction is common (43% of women and 31% of men report some degree of difficulty) ªª Erectile Dysfunction is defined as persistent or recurrent, partial or/ complete, failure to obtain or sustain, an erection until completion of satisfactory sexual activity. Other terms for erectile dysfunction are Impotence, erectile failure, erectile dysfunctions, sexual inadequacy, sexual weakness, less erection, decreased erection, failure in intercourse, sexual incompetence, unable to sex i.e. intercourse, erection problem, napunsakata, less hardness of penis, looseness of penis in mid of sex or before penetration, E. D., ED, etc. The symbol for the man’s “masculinity” is the erect penis. It represents manhood and is expected to be ready to perform at a moment’s notice. When man suffers with erectile failure it comes as a major shock, when suddenly the symbol of his masculinity does not respond on. It usually means much more to the man than the simple fact that

he is not responding sexually at that moment. It causes him to question his status as an adequate male. Thus when he fails, becomes panicky. Premature ejaculation (also known as early discharge or quick orgasm, early fall, Shigrapatan) is one of the most frequent, of sexual disorders in the male and is characterized by sudden ejaculation of the semen, just prior to or immediately after vaginal penetration during intercourse (before one wishes or before he could satisfy the female partner). Approximately 10% to 30% people of all age group suffer with quick semen discharge. Premature or ‘before time’ in other words, is a condition where the man has no voluntary control over his ejaculation. He is quick on the trigger once he starts the coitus. This is a very frustrating disorders of male sexual function in which man feels totally helpless. This leads to bitterness in husbands & wife relationships. For the man, lack of control of his body functioning leaves him feeling unsure of himself. His pleasure is often decreased by the abrupt early discharge. Eventually his preoccupation with trying to postpone ejaculation will hinder his ability enjoy himself to sexual pleasure. When a man is, feeling inadequate, and ejaculating fast, the woman will probably be left unsatisfied. Her frustration will only increase the negative pattern. This is an easily treatable condition. There are certain conditions in which ejaculation occurs but it takes long time (delayed ejaculation). Retarded ejaculation is a disorder where the male wants to ejaculate but is unable to do so. It was believed to be a rare condition but we frequently come across patients suffering from this disorder. Sex therapists in USA and Europe have also noted an increase in its incidence. Individuals complaining of retarded ejaculation get aroused; have a normal erection, which persists, but cannot ejaculate in

The causes of retarded ejaculation are some hormonal disorders, drugs, C.N.S. abnormalities & psychiatric illnesses. In order to understand the paradox of a man being able to have a good erection without ejaculation, it is necessary to remember that the sexual response is biphasic. Erection is mediated by the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system, while ejaculation is dependent on the sympathetic division of central nervous system. The impotent male is unable to achieve an erection while the male with retarded ejaculation cannot come, although his erection is normal. In severe cases of retarded ejaculation, the extreme frustration of being unable to experience orgasm makes such men dislike intercourse and resort to masturbation alone for orgasmic release. One would think that the female partner would welcome the delayed orgasmic response of the male, but it is not so, she considers it a rejection of herself. Nocturnal emission is an ejaculation of semen experienced by a male during sleep. It is also called a “wet dream”, a spontaneous orgasm, or simply

an orgasm during sleep. Nocturnal emissions are most common during teenage and early adult years. However, nocturnal emissions may happen any time after puberty. They may be accompanied by erotic dreams, and the emission may happen without erection. Dreams, if recalled at all, may not be erotic, or they may be confusing to the dreamer, especially if he is an adolescent, immediately after his first wet dream. The sensations, if any, which accompany a wet dream may range anywhere from simply a tingling sensation to a sense of urinating or having to urinate, instead of the typical orgasm (which is why many teens might awaken in embarrassment believing they have just wet the bed). It is possible to wake up during, or to simply sleep through, the ejaculation in what is sometimes called a “sex dream’. Nocturnal emissions occur as a physical response to erotic dreams and as a mechanism to expel an abundance of sperm cells, which are constantly in production within the male individual. The discharge of semen through the penis during sleep usually as a result of erotic dreams is called nocturnal emission. It is also called “wet dreams” or “night falls”. When a young man experiences a nocturnal emission, he gets quite a shock. If the person is ignorant of the normal sexual process, he will be bewildered at what is happening to him and may turn to bogus literature on sex or to quacks for an answer. Misinformation may result in sexual problems. Wet dreams are quite natural. No physical or mental harm can come from them. They do not require any treatment. It is not just boys who get these wet dreams. Even girls and women can have erotic dreams as a result of pent-up sexual desires, which may lead to orgasms during sleep. A wet dream is an erotic dream that is so intense that a guy ejaculates (cums) in his sleep. Nocturnal emission is one of the ways the body gets rid of semen build up, so it usually doesn’t happen during periods of masturbation or sex play. Very often guys don’t remember the dream. If they don’t know what’s going on, they may think they’ve “wet the bed.” Although wet dreams are most common among teenage guys, many men also have nocturnal emissions as adults. Some guys never have wet dreams, but most do. Dreams or no dreams — both are normal. And ladies needn’t feel left out — women and girls have wet dreams, too. Their vaginas become lubricated as they become sexually aroused in their dreams. But there is less evidence of wet dreams in women than in men because less liquid is produced or spilled on the bed sheets. Wet dreams are also more common in men, because a man’s penis gets more tactile stimulation (physical touch) during sleep than a woman’s clitoris. Nocturnal Emissions becomes a problem or a disease when the frequency of the emissions increases more than 3-4 times per week and prevails as it as for more than 3 -4 months continuous associated with body weakness and fatigue, feeling of weakness always and loss of energy and enthusiasm felt by the individual which needs HERBAL MEDICATION. various reasons. The cause may be in man or women. Each of these below mentioned causes for non-consummation of marriage are investigated & treated scientifically. Although most women’s sexual responsiveness peaks in the late 30s and early 40s, a woman can have satisfying sexual experiences throughout her life. The quality of her experiences is affected by individual differences, by life situation, by age and hormonal levels, and by overall health and well-being. A sexual problem is anything that interferes with a woman’s satisfaction with a sexual activity.

Know bipolar mood disorder ¾¾
What is bipolar mood disorder? Bipolar mood disorder, also known as manicdepressive psychosis (MDP), is a type of mood disorder characterised by mood swings. Many people experience normal mood swings from “Monday morning blues” to mild euphoria, in bipolar mood disorder, there are swings from extreme depression to great elation or mania and hyperactivity, occasionally at times losing touch with reality, However, there are also long periods of complete normality, Manic depressives suffer from an extreme of mood change over a more prolonged period and are regarded as being clinically ill during these attacks. A doctor or psychiatrist will look at whether an attack of mania is accompanied by depression before diagnosing bipolar mood disorder. Bipolar mood disorder typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not recognised as an illness and people who have it may suffer needlessly for years or even decades. ¾¾ What causes bipolar mood disorder? Much research is being carried out as to the causes of bipolar mood disorder but there are no definite conclusions yet. There may be a genetic
predisposition to the illness such that other family members may also suffer from this illness. It could also be triggered by major stress events or hormonal changes such as those occurring after childbirth. It may also be due to a chemical imbalance affecting that area of the brain responsible for “moods”, thus causing changes in feelings and behaviour. Symptoms

 1. Depression depressed or in low mood a loss of interest and enjoyment in life a lack of drive and motivation that makes even simple tasks ªª and decisions difficult or impossible ªª utter fatigue ªª agitation and restlessness ªª loss of appetite with loss of weight ªª inability to sleep ªª loss of outward affection, loss of interest in sex ªª loss of self-confidence, avoiding people ªª feeling useless, inadequate, bad, helpless and hopeless ªª feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness ªª feeling worse at a particular time of day, usually mornings ªª Suicidal thoughts; these are very common in depression and they are signs that help is needed.  2. Mania & Hypomania ªª elated mood ªª increased activity & energy ªª inability or unwillingness to sleep ªª rapid speech, flow of ideas & thoughts ªª inflated self-esteem ªª irritability & impatience ªª increased sexual drive & lack of sexual inhibitions ªª loss of judgment & impulsive decision making ªª irrational spending of money & involvement in questionable endeavors ªª grandiose delusions An early sign of bipolar mood disorder may be hypomania. This is a state in which the person shows a high level of energy, excessive moodiness or irritability, and impulsive or reckless behaviour. Hypomania may feel good to the person who experiences this and the sufferer seldom thinks that anything is wrong and may object quite violently if anyone tries to point this out to him or her. With experience, it is possible for some people to recognise their condition but often in an extreme state, all understanding is lost, it is not unusual for someone suffering an attack to break the law perhaps during a flight of fancy, about of excessive spending, committing a fraud, or fortunately, very rarely, of committing a physical assault.  3. Mixed States A few people sometimes experience a combination of symptoms from both mania and depression. For example, a high level of activity may be combined with a low level of concentration and a depressed attitude towards life. This can lead to an increased risk of suicide attempt. ¾¾ Normal phase ªª ªª ªª
AYURPHARMA

After a period of depression or of mania, the sufferer usually return to a normal state, back to one’s usual personality, thinking capabilities and energy levels without any physiological damage. However, the sufferer may start regretting the damage done to relationships or finances. There may be a loss of confidence and also embarrassment. ¾¾ How frequent are the attacks? The frequency of attacks varies not only from one individual to another but also within the same individual. Some have a regular cyclic pattern: daily, monthly, yearly or every few years. Other people go for years free from the problem and then have a series of random attacks. ¾¾ Why is treatment necessary? If untreated, sufferers will probably recover by themselves in time but often with devastating effect to their lives, their families and considerable unnecessary suffering. Wherever possible, early admission to hospital either for mania or severe depression does facilitate a quicker recovery. In addition, in-patient treatment also helps to protect the patient from the consequences of the illness, such as rash judgments in mania or suicide attempts in severe depression. ¾¾ How is Bipolar mood disorder treated? Mood swings in many cases (60-80%) can be controlled or reduced by medications such as mood stabilisers. The most frequently used medication is lithium carbonate, carbamazepine and divalproex sodium. At times other drugs are also used to treat either the depression or the mania. Sometimes, more than one drug is required. These drugs include antidepressants, antipsychoticsand benzodiazepines. For every drug, there is a “side effect”. These drugs are used only to hasten a return to normality and it is seldom that they have to be continuously given. Another treatment sometimes used in cases of sever depression and occasionally mania is ElectroConvulsive Therapy (ECT). When administered, the patient is given a muscle relaxant and a short acting general anaesthetic. A strictly controlled electrical current is passed across the brain from electrodes placed against the head. There may be a loss of memory for the period of the treatment but there is no evidence of long-term effects on memory. Generally severe depression can be successfully improved by ETC. ¾¾ How to cope with the illness?
The effects of the mood swings put a great strain on marriag and children (or parents), and on employers and friends as well the individual sufferer. In a number of cases this leads to isolatic loss of job, or loss of home, making for further strains and increase the loneliness of the sufferer. Hence this illness affects the suffer the family and society in different ways. ÂÂ a. The Sufferer Sufferers need to admit that they are ill and this is not ea He or she may have to take mood stabiliser, in one form another, for an appreciable length of time, possibly even for t rest of their lives. Try to recognise symptoms early as it is sometimes possible stop a mood change from becoming more intense either by early drug treatment or by avoiding difficult situations. A change in sleep pattern is often a useful indicator of early relapse. Prevent complications by not abusing alcohol and caffeine product (tea, coffee, coke) and maintaining a balanced diet. As the illness can be stress-related, learn what causes you stress and plan your life to try and avoid unnecessary stress, never make major decisions when ill. Should you have a tendency to spend money when “high”, then consider putting your affairs into a trust or appoint an attorney to act on your behalf. Recognize that those close to you are trying to help. ÂÂ b. Relatives and friends First of all, loved ones and relatives should recognise that the strange behaviour, violent or abusive language or prolonged silences, which characterise certain phases of the illness, is not a previously hidden facet of the personality but a symptom of the mood disorder. Understand that you may have to lock away or hide household poisons or tablets on certain occasions or at other times go out and find the sufferer. You may also have to encourage the person to visit the psychiatrist, or ask for urgent help whenever the sufferer is so “high” that he or she is no longer aware that anything is wrong. Visiting the sufferer at the hospital can also be a real test of your beliefs and understanding. You may not be well received, being accused of putting them in hospital etc. It helps the sufferer if you remain consistent and firm in attitude. You may gain further insight and understanding of the illness from the nursing and medical staff. Note: In case you need any further information about your condition, please consult your doctor.

Gene therapy for Hypertension
Research Foundation have pioneered many arenas of research in 4 generations. DNA – GENE THERAPY brings in a research and development carried out for 23 years clinically significant on 13000 patients. Retinopathy being a very large arena where progressive vision loss is leaves the patient blind. However with Mana (DNA activator) a patient’s one drop of blood from the finger is taken, creating the patient’s own healthy fetal DNA which has the propensity to regenerate and repair the patient. In this way loss of life and vision are allayed and the patients starts to improve. The course takes 10 injections given subcutaneously. The purest form of medicine is that which is given as injection and the king of all molecules is the DNA, in GENE THERAPY these two are combined in giving the patient relief within the course of 10 injections. ªª Blood pressure: - Worldwide, raised blood pressure is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths, about 12.8% of the total of all deaths. This accounts for 57 million disability adjusted life years (DALYS) or 3.7% of total DALYS. Raised blood pressure is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and ischemic as well as hemorrhagic stroke. Blood pressure levels have been shown to be positively and continuously related to the risk for stroke and coronary heart disease. Across the WHO regions, the prevalence of raised blood pressure was highest in Africa, where it was 46% for both sexes combined. Both men and women have high rates of raised blood pressure in the Africa region, with prevalence rates over 40%. The lowest prevalence of raised blood pressure was in the WHO Region of the Americas at 35% for both sexes. Men in this region had higher prevalence than women (39% for men and 32% for women). In all WHO regions, men have slightly higher prevalence of raised blood pressure than women. This difference was only statistically significant in the Americas and Europe. Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in thearteries is elevated.[1] This requires the heart to work harder than normal to circulate blood through the blood vessels. Blood pressure is
42

summarised by two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole). Normal blood pressure at rest is within the range of 100-140mmHg systolic (top reading) and 60-90mmHg diastolic (bottom reading). High blood pressure is said to be present if it is persistently at or above 140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is classified as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension; about 90–95% of cases are categorized as “primary hypertension” which means high blood pressure with no obvious underlying medical cause. The remaining 5–10% of cases (secondary hypertension) are caused by other conditions that affect the kidneys, arteries, heart or endocrine system. Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attacks),heart failure, aneurysms of the arteries (e.g. aortic aneurysm), peripheral arterial disease and is a cause of chronic kidney disease. Even moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure is associated with a shortened life expectancy. Dietary and lifestyle changes can improve blood pressure control and decrease the risk of associated health complications, although drug treatment is often necessary in people for whom lifestyle changes prove ineffective or insufficient. ¾¾ Signs and symptoms ªª Hypertension is rarely accompanied by any symptoms, and its identification is usually through screening, or when seeking healthcare for an unrelated problem. A proportion of people with high blood pressure report headaches (particularly at theback of the head and in the morning), as well as lightheadedness, vertigo, tinnitus(buzzing or hissing in the ears), altered vision or fainting episodes. These symptoms however are more likely to be related to associated anxiety than the high blood pressure itself. ªª On physical examination, hypertension may be suspected on the basis of the presence of hypertensive retinopathy detected by examination of the optic fundusfound in the back of the eye using ophthalmoscopy. Classically, the severity of the hypertensive retinopathy changes is graded from grade I–IV, although the milder types may be difficult to distinguish from each other.Ophthalmoscopy findings may also give some indication as to how long a person has been hypertensive. Hypertension is diagnosed on the basis of a persistently high blood pressure. Traditionally, this requires three separate sphygmomanometer measurements at one monthly intervals.Initial assessment of the hypertensive people should include a complete history and physical examination. With the availability of 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitors and home blood pressure machines, the importance of not wrongly diagnosing those who have white coat hypertension has led to a change in protocols. In the United Kingdom, current best practice is to follow up a single raised clinic reading with ambulatory measurement, or less ideally with home blood pressure monitoring over the course of 7 days. Pseudo hypertension in the elderly or noncompressibility artery syndrome may also require consideration. This condition is believed to be due to calcification of the arteries resulting an abnormally high blood pressure readings with a blood pressure cuff while intra arterial measurements of blood pressure are normal. Once the diagnosis of hypertension has been made, physicians will attempt to identify the underlying cause based on risk factors and other symptoms, if present. Secondary hypertension is more common in preadolescent children, with most cases caused by renal disease. Primary or essential hypertension is more common in adolescents and has multiple risk factors, including obesity and a family history of hypertension. Laboratory tests can also be performed to identify possible causes of secondary hypertension, and to determine whether hypertension has caused damage to the heart, eyes, and kidneys. Additional tests for diabetes and high cholesterol levels are usually performed because these conditions are additional risk factors for the development of heart disease and may require treatment. Serum creatinine is measured to assess for the presence of kidney disease, which can be either the cause or the result of hypertension. Serum creatinine alone may overestimate glomerular filtration rate and recent guidelines advocate the use of predictive equations such as the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). eGFR can also provides a baseline measurement of kidney function that can be used to monitor for side effects of certain antihypertensive drugs on kidney function. Additionally, testing of urine samples for protein is used as a secondary indicator of kidney disease. Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) testing is done to check for evidence that the heart is under strain from high blood pressure. It may also show whether there is thickening of the heart muscle (left ventricular hypertrophy) or whether the heart has experienced a prior minor disturbance such as a silent heart attack. A chest X-ray or an echocardiogram may also be performed to look for signs of heart enlargement or damage to the heart.

In people aged 18 years or older hypertension is defined as a systolic and/or a diastolic blood pressure measurement consistently higher than an accepted normal value (currently 139 mmHg systolic, 89 mmHg diastolic: see table —Classification (JNC7)). Lower thresholds are used (135 mmHg systolic or 85 mmHg diastolic) if measurements are derived from 24-hour ambulatory or home monitoring.Recent international hypertension guidelines have also created categories below the hypertensive range to indicate a continuum of risk with higher blood pressures in the normal range. JNC7 (2003) uses the term prehypertension for blood pressure in the range 120-139 mmHg systolic and/ or 80-89 mmHg diastolic, while ESH-ESC Guidelines (2007) andBHS IV (2004)[52] use optimal, normal and high normal categories to subdivide pressures below 140 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic. Hypertension is also sub-classified: JNC7 distinguishes hypertension stage I, hypertension stage II, and isolated systolic hypertension. Isolated systolic hypertension refers to elevated systolic pressure with normal diastolic pressure and is common in the elderly. The ESH-ESC Guidelines (2007)and BHS IV (2004), additionally define a third stage (stage III hypertension) for people with systolic blood pressure exceeding 179 mmHg or a diastolic pressure over 109 mmHg. Hypertension is classified as “resistant” if medications do not reduce blood pressure to normal levels. Hypertensive retinopathy is damage to the retina and retinal circulation due to high blood pressure (i.e. hypertension). The changes in hypertensive retinopathy result from damage and adaptive changes in the arterial and arteriolar circulation in response to the high blood pressure. ¾¾ Symptoms Most patients with hypertensive retinopathy present without visual symptoms, however, some may report decreased vision or headaches. ¾¾ Signs of damage to the retina caused by hypertension include: ªª Arteriolar changes, such as generalized arteriolar narrowing, focal arteriolar narrowing, arteriovenous nicking, changes in the arteriolar wall (arteriosclerosis) and abnormalities at points where arterioles and venules cross. Manifestations of these changes include Copper wire arterioleswhere the central light reflex occupies most of the width of the arteriole andSilver wire arterioles where the central light reflex occupies all of the width of the arteriole, and “arteriovenular (AV) nicking” or “AV nipping”, due to venous constriction and banking. ªª advanced retinopathy lesions, such as microaneurysms, blot hemorrhages and/or flame hemorrhages, ischemic changes (e.g. “cotton www.bangalorehealthtv.com

wool spots”), hard exudates and in severe cases swelling of the optic disk (papilledema, or optic disc edema), a ring of exudates around the retina called a “macularstar” and visual acuity loss, typically due to macular involvement. Mild signs of hypertensive retinopathy can be seen quite frequently in normal people (3–14% of adult individuals aged ≥40 years), even without hypertension. ¾¾ TREATMENT Most physicians would start the person on hypertensive medication where blood pressure gets controlled however there are complications from all chemical ingredients. Through Mana – DNA Gene Therapy the patient can undergo a relief since it uses the patients own blood as the raw stock thus allergic and side effects are rare. The patient gets relief from hypertension within the 10 injection course thus the progression of the disease is allayed.

NEPHROPLUS LAUNCHES STANDALONE CENTRE
ON the OCCASION OF WORLD KINDEY DAY, KIDNEY CARE SPECIALIST NEPHROPLUS LAUNCHES FIRST STANDALONE CENTRE IN BANGALORE ªª In Karnataka, there are around 10,000 patients
who undergo at least 70,000 dialysis sessions in a month. ªª Of the total patients suffering from renal ailments, only a meager 10% of them have access to dialysis treatment in the state. ªª Of the 10,000 patients that are on dialysis in Karnataka, 70% of them stay in Bangalore or have migrated from different parts of the state to Bangalore. ªª Patient survey in Bangalore: Most dialysis patients feel that kidney failure is ‘end of life’. They view dialysis as a stop gap solution before they decide to plug out of dialysis. ªª Some patient quotes: “I will be on dialysis till my son clears his 10th standard exams. After that I will stop dialysis,” says Rajanna, an auto driver. Another lady says, “I will be on dialysis till I get my daughter married off. After that I don’t mind if I die which is better than being a burden for my family!” This attitude of dialysis patients needs to change, says India’s leading kidney care specialist NephroPlus. More than 25% of patients at NephroPlus actually work full time or part time and hence they do not become a burden for the families. Good dialysis will ensure good lifestyle! Understanding the growing need to address and redefine the way dialysis is perceived and practiced, kidney care specialist NephroPlus today announcedthe opening of its first standalone centreat Basaveshwara Nagar in Bangalore. The occasion was also marked by the launch of NephroPlus’ campaign “A HEART FOR YOUR KIDNEYS”. The campaign is aimed at educating the public on the need to love your kidneys and how one can keep their kidneys healthy. Further, the event also witnessed NephroPlus urging the public to take an oath to be kind towards the kidneys. With less than 10% of renal patients receiving medical attention, the State of renal care in Karnataka is in a shambles. Infact, the state has around 10,000 patients undergoing around 70,000 dialysis sessions every month. However, the irony is that most of them do not have access to quality renal care forcing them to migrate to Bangalore for better treatment. Further, due to unreasonable costs and lack of understanding, most of the patients view dialysis as a stop gap solution further putting

With our expertise and global standards, which will be available at affordable rates, we hope to serve the people of Bangalore and the nearby areas. Apart from setting up standalone clinics, we are planning to partner with leading hospitals and medical colleges to set up more centres over the next 12 months in the State.” Says Dr. Anoop M, Senior Nephrologist & Medical Director, NephroPlus, Basaveshwara Nagar, “Unlike in the developed economies, renal patients in India view kidney failure as the end of life. At NephroPlus, our patient-friendly approach and treatment will ensure patients are able live a full filling life.” Equipped with the state-of-the art facilities and experienced professionals, the standalone centre aims to provide extensive kidney care and dialysis to patients, using some latest and effective techniques. The center will offer innovative dialysis modules like nocturnal dialysis (dialysis done at night) and short daily dialysis apart from the regular modes of dialysis. In the initial phase, the unit will operate with 10 beds which will be scalable up to 20 beds in the coming months. Around 15 doctors and support staff will be present at the centre to ensure best diagnosis and treatment for patients. Following the highest quality standards, the center will be monitored by NephroPlus’ highly effective remote monitoring system. The unique remote monitoring system monitors dialysis units including the machines and RO plants, and proactively manages health outcomes thereby ensuring ZERO cross infection. spotlight on Kidney Disease
DaVita NephroLife puts the spotlight on Kidney Disease through free kidney tests all through March. It also a Human Chain for Kidney Disease on 14th March 2013. It is a little known fact that two out of every three cases of kidney disease are a result of diabetes and hypertension. Changing lifestyles and the prevalence of these diseases have increased the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) drastically. Bangalore-based DaVita NephroLife, a leader in kidney care services in India had organized free health checkup camps at various locations in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pondicherry, Tumkur and Hosur between March 14 and March 31 on the occasion of World Kidney Day. Also DaVita NephroLife organised a walkathon, Bangalore. The camps focused on educating people about the dangers of untreated hypertension and diabetes for which special education material had been created. The kidney screening includes Serum Creatinine, Urine Routine and Random Blood Sugar – followed by a Nephrologist consultation. “It is unfortunate that the symptoms for kidney disease are vague and non-specific. The only way to know for sure is with a simple kidney screening test. With India being ground zero for diabetes and hypertension, we urge those at high-risk of chronic kidney disease to get themselves screened immediately,” says Dr. Topoti Mukherjee from DaVita NephroLife. Worldwide more than 50 per cent of people with
46

diabetes are unaware of their condition and are not treated. About 40 per cent of people with diabetes will develop CKD which increases the risk of cardiovascular and other complications of diabetes. The number for India is much higher. There are roughly two lakh new patients who need dialysis or kidney transplants every year. “We are entering an era where CKD are making inroads into our daily nomenclature. The time to stop it is now – and unless we do something about it, it may be too late. Our real work lies in curtailing the onset of kidney disease – in which diabetes and hypertension plays a big part,” said ShriramVijayakumar, Founder & MD DaVita NephroLife. The same factors that increase obesity predispose individuals to diabetes and CKD, i.e. family history, presence of hypertension, lack of exercise and unhealthy dietary habits. It is important to identify these risks early to reduce the development of diabetes and CKD, as CKD greatly amplifies the risk of cardiovascular events in diabetic patients.

Nova Specialty Surgery – “Combat Kidney Disease” campaign Nova Specialty Surgery, has conducted ‘Combat Kidney Disease’ campaign on the occasion of ‘World Kidney Day’ march 14th . This special screening camp began from 14th March and continued till Dr. Mahesh Reddy the end of the month at both the Cofounder, centers at Bangalore situated at executive director Koramangala & Sadashivnagar. The kidney screening camp was also held for a day on 14th march at their out reach clinic at chikkaballapur in alliance with Jeevan hospital. The ‘Combat Kidney Disease’ campaign is a part of the promotional activities of Nova Specialty Surgery that aims towards serving the larger sections of the society with the latest developments in urology treatment. The camp included routine investigations such as whole abdomen ultrasound scanning and blood investigations, followed by a consultation by a Nova Specialty Surgery urologist. Dr. Mahesh Reddy, co-founder of Nova Specialty Surgery, said, “The theme for World Kidney Day 2013 is to ‘Stop Kidney Attack’. At Nova Specialty Surgery, we have become increasingly cognizant of a rising lack of awareness and several misconceptions about urinary diseases and the latest treatment modalities that are available. We come across a lot of patients of all age groups who are unaware or choose to ignore serious urinary problems till they assume dangerous proportions and reach advanced stages. Some people
are under the impression that these problems are solely due to ageing and therefore, untreatable and tend to suffer in isolation and silence. Many do not wish to discuss their problems considering it to be a taboo or social stigma and are also unaware of the latest minimally invasive treatment facilities available at super specialty centers like Nova Specialty Surgery. Unlike traditional open surgeries, minimally invasive procedures are safe even for elderly patients and are less morbid with shorter hospital stay. Also, a large part of the population is under the impression that these facilities are expensive while in reality, the cost difference as compared to traditional/open surgery is just around 20 - 25% extra with high safety measures and a faster recovery process with the state-of-the-art procedures.” this campaign was to raise an awareness about kidney diseases, thus leading to improved prevention and treatment across Karnataka.
