Proper hand washing techniques
Good hand washing techniques include washing your hands with soap and water or using an alchol-based hand sanitizer. Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are just as effective as soap and water in cleaning your hands but aren’t as good as alcohol-based sanitizers. Antibacterial soaps have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, these soaps are no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. Using antibacterial soaps may lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to the products’ antimicrobial agents making it even harder to kill these germs m the future. In general, regular soap is fine. The combination of scrubbing your hands with soap — antibacterial or not — and rinsing them with water loosens and removes bacteria from your hands,

Through commitment, balance all walks of your life... family, work, social and spiritual ommitment is the language of the wise; complaint is the language of the fools. Commitment is a responsibility and also includes accountability. In life, one should be responsible as well as accountable. Generally one takes responsibility without accountability; this weakens one’s being. Our weaknesses result in disappointment. Disappointment should be cremated and not garlanded. People derive a sadistic pleasure from disappointment. This is a primitive pleasure, like a grownup boy sucking his thumb. To cremate disappointment, one should strengthen one’s strengths. The greatest strength comes from the energy of commitment and brings in excellence in all walks of life. Few people traverse the road of success without a puncture or two but it is commitment to excellence that takes them through. Commitment is not being ‘stuck,’ but it is an integration of one’s being. For example, if you are committed to honour your word, then the ‘lower self in you will discourage you to justify the failure in not keeping up your promise. If your energies are low, you will be sucked into its logic and reasoning. But if you follow the ‘higher self/ the ‘lower self will be like a servant serving the master. Slowly the ‘lower self will be integrated with the higher. In such a state there will be integrity. Without integrity life is shallow. We have both - an actor and a thinker in us. Every time we lie, the thinker warns us that we are lying and the actor asks us to shut up and continue telling lies. In such a state, there is a split in our being -between the actor and the thinker. Commitment creates integrity. In this state, it is easier to bring forth the excellence in our lives. ªª Excellence happens when there is love to grow and contribute. ªª Commitment also involves dropping illusions. From the past, we see the present. Hence we create illusions but we must filter them wisely. ªª Creativity occurs through the power of intention. Intention is like sowing a seed in existence. Allow it to germinate. ªª Creativity is to balance all walks of life. Creativity is just not creating something new always. Creativity brings excellence in one’s life. It is a state of well-being. Well-being creates completion. When one is complete, one is alive and vibrant in all walks of life.

Always wash your hands:
After using the toilet After changing a diaper - wash the diaper-wearer’s hands, too After touching animals or animal waste Before and after preparing food, especially before and immediately after handling raw meat, poultry or fish Before eating After blowing your nose After coughing or sneezing into your hands Before and after treating wounds or cuts Before and after touching a sick or injured person After handling garbage Before inserting or removing contact lenses When using public restrooms, such as those in airports, train stations, bus stations and restaurants Kids need clean hands, too
You can help your children avoid getting sick by insisting that they wash their hands properly and frequently. To get kids into the habit, teach by example. Wash your hands with your children and supervise their hand washing. Place hand-washing reminders at children’s eye level, such as a chart by the bathroom sink for children to mark every time they wash their hands. Make sure the sink is low enough for children to use, or that it has a stool underneath so that children can reach it. Older children and adolescents also can use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Younger children can use them, too — with an adult’s help. Just make sure the sanitizer has completely dried before your child touches anything. This will avoid ingestion of alcohol from hand-to-mouth contact. Store the container safely away after use. Hand washing is especially important for children who attend child care. Children younger than 3 years in child care are at greater risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, which can easily spread to family members and others in the community, To protect your child’s health, be sure your child care provider promotes sound hygiene, including frequent hand washing or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Ask whether the children are required to wash their hands several times a day — not just before meals. Note, too, whether diapering areas are cleaned after each use and whether eating and diapering areas are well separated.

Peptic ulcer T
oo much stress, too much spicy food, and you may be headed for an ulcer — that was the way the thinking used to go. Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach, upper small intestine or esophagus. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is pain. Not long ago, the common belief was that peptic ulcers were a result of lifestyle. Doctors now know that a bacterial infection or some medications — not stress or diet — cause most ulcers of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). Esophageal ulcers also may occur and are typically associated with the reflux of stomach acid. Peptic ulcers are common, and oftentimes successful treatment of peptic ulcers takes just a few weeks. Depending on their location, peptic ulcers have different names: Gastric ulcer: - This is a peptic ulcer that occurs in your stomach. Duodenal ulcer: - This type of peptic ulcer develops in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Esophageal ulcer:-An esophageal ulcer is usually located in the lower section of your esophagus. It’s often associated with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Causes: The cause of most ulcers is the corkscrew-shaped bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). H. pylori lives and multiplies within the mucous layer that covers and protects tissues that line the stomach and small intestine. Often, H. pylori causes no problems. But sometimes it can disrupt the mucous layer and inflame the lining of the stomach or duodenum, producing an ulcer. One reason may be that people who develop peptic ulcers already have damage to the lining of the stomach or small intestine, making it easier for bacteria to invade and

inflame tissues. H. pylori is a common gastrointestinal infection around the world. Although it’s not clear exactly how H. pylori spreads, it may be transmitted from person to person by close contact, such as kissing. People may also contract H. pylori through food and water. H. pylori is the most common, but not the only, cause of peptic ulcers. Besides H. pylori, other causes of peptic ulcers, or factors that may aggravate them, include: Regular use of pain relievers, Smoking, Excessive alcohol consumption and Stress.

When to seek medical advice?
An ulcer isn’t something that you should treat on your own, without a doctor’s help. Over-the-counter antacids and acid blockers may relieve the gnawing pain, but the relief is short-lived. If you have signs or symptoms of an ulcer, see your doctor. With a doctor’s help, you can find prompt relief of ulcer pain as well as a complete healing of the ulcer. Screening and diagnosis: In order to detect an ulcer, your doctor may have you undergo the following diagnostic tests: ªª Upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) X-ray. Your doctor may begin with this test, which outlines your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. During the X-ray, you swallow a white, metallic liquid (containing barium) that coats your digestive tract and makes an ulcer more visible. An upper GI X-ray can detect some ulcers, but not all. ªª Endoscopy. This procedure may follow an upper GI X-ray if the X-ray suggests a possible ulcer, or your doctor may perform endoscopy first. In this more sensitive procedure, a long, narrow tube with an attached camera is threaded down your throat and esophagus into your stomach and duodenum. With this instrument, your doctor can view your
FEBRUARY
upper digestive tract and identify an ulcer. If your doctor detects an ulcer, he or she may remove small tissue samples (biopsy) near the ulcer. These samples are examined under a microscope to rule out cancer. A biopsy can also identify the presence of H. pylori in your stomach lining. Depending on where the ulcer is found, your doctor may recommend a repeat endoscopy after two to three months to confirm that the ulcer is healing. In addition to a biopsy, Blood, Breath and Stool antigen test are also carried out. Complications: Left untreated, peptic ulcers can cause internal bleeding and can eat a hole through the wall of your stomach or small intestine, putting you at risk of serious infection of your abdominal cavity (peritonitis). Peptic ulcers can also produce scar tissue that can obstruct passage of food through the digestive tract, causing you to become full easily, to vomit and to lose weight. Treatment: Doctors use a two-pronged approach

to peptic ulcer treatment: Viz…Kill the bacteria and Reduce the level of acid in your digestive system to relieve pain and encourage healing. And this is done through Antibiotic medications, Acid blockers, Antacids, Proton pump inhibitors, Cytoprotective agents. Peptic ulcers that don’t heal with treatment are called refractory ulcers. There are many reasons why an ulcer may fail to heal. Not taking medications according to directions is one reason. Another is that some types of H. pylori are resistant to antibiotics. Other factors that can interfere with the healing process include regular use of tobacco, alcohol or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Self-care: Though food and stress are not direct causes of ulcers, while an ulcer is healing, it’s still advisable to watch what you eat and to control stress. Acidic or spicy foods may increase ulcer pain. The same is true for stress. Stress may increase acid and slow digestion, allowing food and digestive acid to remain in your stomach and intestines for a longer period. If stress

total ratio is less than 25%. (See graph at right.) The lower the ratio the greater the probability of prostate cancer. Measuring the ratio of free to total PSA appears to be particularly promising for eliminating unnecessary biopsies in men with PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL. ¾¾ Prostate cancer screening
espite its relatively small size, the prostate accounts for substantial and disproportionate health problems in older men, the most significant of which is cancer. Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer of males in several developed countries. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. PSA is present in small quantities in the serum of normal men, and is often elevated in the presence of prostate cancer and in other prostate disorders. A blood test to measure PSA is the most effective test currently available for the early detection of prostate cancer. Higher than normal levels of PSA are associated with both localized and metastatic prostate cancer (CaP).
¾¾
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the PSA test for annual screening of prostate cancer in men of age 50 and older. PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter) are considered to be suspicious and should be followed by rectal ultrasound imaging and, if indicated, prostate biopsy. PSA is false positive-prone (7 out of 10 men in this category will still not have prostate cancer) and false negative-prone (2.5 out of 10 men with prostate cancer have no elevation in PSA). The current guidelines of the American Cancer Society(ACS) recommend that men over age 50 should be offered the digital rectal exam and PSA tests yearly. Screening should be offered annually to AfricanAmerican men and those with a family history of prostate cancer upon reaching 45 years. Other racial and

Clinical significance PSA is normally present in the blood at very low levels; normal PSA levels are defined as between 0-4.0 ng per milliliter. Increased levels of PSA may suggest the presence of prostate cancer. However, prostate cancer can also be present in the complete absence of an elevated PSA level, in which case the test result would be a false negative. PSA levels can be also elevated due to prostate infection, irritation, benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement) or hyperplasia (BPH) or recent ejaculation, in which case it may give a false positive. It is a myth that digital rectal exam raises PSA. The rate of increase of PSA (the PSA velocity) may have value in prostate cancer prognosis. Men with prostate cancer whose PSA level increased by more than 2.0 ng per milliliter during the year before the diagnosis of prostate cancer have a higher risk of death from prostate cancer despite undergoing radical prostatectomy. Most PSA in the blood is bound to serum proteins. A small amount is not protein bound and is called free PSA. In men with prostate cancer the ratio of free (unbound) PSA to total PSA is decreased. The risk of cancer increases if the free to

ethnic groups, such as Asian- and Hispanic-Americans have a lower risk of prostate cancer, and may not benefit from screening. Screening is likely not useful for men over age 70 or with other significant medical problems and a life expectancy of fewer than 10 years. These guidelines may be changing. A new European study has shown that a thorough screening for prostate cancer every 4 years is adequate. The screening comprises a PSA blood test, a digital rectal exam, and a transrectal ultrasound
over age 50, and some advise men who are at a higher risk for prostate cancer to begin screening at age 40 or 45. Others caution against routine screening, while still others counsel men about the risks and benefits on an individual basis and encourage men to make personal decisions about screening.. Several risk factors increase a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer. Age is the most common risk factor, with nearly 70 percent of prostate cancer cases occurring in men age 65 and older. Men who have a father or brother with prostate cancer have a greater chance of developing prostate cancer. African American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer, while Asian and Native American men have the lowest rates. In addition, there is some evidence that a diet higher in fat, especially animal fat, may increase the risk of prostate cancer. 4. How are PSA test results reported? PSA test results report the level of PSA detected in the blood. The test results are usually reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/ ml) of blood. Most doctors consider PSA values below 4 ng/ml as normal Higher a man’s PSA level, the more likely it is that cancer is present. But because various factors can cause PSA levels to fluctuate, one abnormal PSA test does not necessarily indicate a need for other diagnostic tests. When PSA levels continue to rise over time, other tests may be needed. 5. What if the test results show an elevated PSA level? A man should discuss elevated PSA test results with his doctor. There are many possible reasons for an elevated PSA level, including prostate cancer, benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, age, and race. If no other symptoms suggest cancer, the doctor may recommend repeating DRE and PSA tests regularly to watch for any changes. If a man’s PSA levels have been increasing or if a suspicious lump is detected during the DRE, the doctor may recommend other tests to determine if there is cancer or another problem in the prostate. A urine test may be used to detect a urinary tract infection or blood in the urine. The doctor may recommend imaging tests, such as ultrasound or cystoscopy. Medicine or surgery may be recommended if the problem is BPH or an infection. If cancer is suspected, a biopsy is needed to determine if cancer is present in the prostate. During a biopsy, samples of prostate tissue are removed, usually with 5a needle, and viewed under a microscope.
¾¾ The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: Questions and Answers
1. What is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test? Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood. The doctor takes a blood sample, and the amount of PSA is measured in a laboratory. Because PSA is produced by the body and can be used to detect disease, it is sometimes called a biological marker or tumor marker. It is normal for men to have low levels of PSA in their blood; however, prostate cancer or benign (not cancerous) conditions can increase PSA levels. As men age, both benign prostate conditions and prostate cancer become more frequent. The most common benign prostate conditions are prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH (enlargement of the prostate). There is no evidence that prostatitis or BPH cause cancer, but it is possible for a man to have one or both of these conditions and to develop prostate cancer as well. PSA levels alone do not give doctors enough information to distinguish between benign prostate conditions and cancer. However, the doctor will take the result of the PSA test into account when deciding whether to check further for signs of prostate cancer. 2. Why is the PSA test performed? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the PSA test along with a digital rectal exam (DRE) to help detect prostate cancer in men age 50 and older. During a DRE, a doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum and feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall to check for bumps or abnormal areas. Doctors often use the PSA test and DRE as prostate cancer screening tests; together, these tests can help doctors detect prostate cancer in men who have no symptoms of the disease. The FDA has also approved the PSA test to monitor patients with a history of prostate cancer to see if the cancer has come back (recurred). An elevated PSA level in a patient with a history of prostate cancer does not al 3. For whom might a PSA screening test be recommended? Doctors’ recommendations for screening vary. Some encourage yearly screening for men

6. What are some of the limitations of the PSA test? zz Detection does not always mean saving lives: Even though the PSA test can detect small tumors, finding a small tumor does not necessarily reduce a man’s chance of dying from prostate cancer. PSA testing may identify very slow-growing tumors that are unlikely to threaten a man’s life. Also, PSA testing may not help a man with a fast-growing or aggressive cancer that has already spread to other parts of his body before being detected. zz False pos0147itive tests: False positive test results occur..3041when the PSA level is elevated but no cancer is actually present. False positives may lead to additional medical procedures that have potential risks and significant financial costs and can create anxiety for the patient and his family. Most men with an elevated PSA test turn out not to have cancer; only 25 to 30 percent of men who have a biopsy due to elevated PSA levels actually have prostate cancer (3). zz False negative tests: False negative test results occur
when the PSA level is in the normal range even though prostate cancer is actually present. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and may exist for decades before they are large enough to cause symptoms. Subsequent PSA tests may indicate a problem before the disease progresses significantly. 7. Why is the PSA test controversial? It is not clear if the benefits of PSA screening outweigh the risks of follow-up diagnostic tests and cancer treatments. For example, the PSA test may detect small cancers that would never become life threatening. This situation, called overdiagnosis, puts men at risk for complications from unnecessary treatment such as surgery or radiation. The procedure used to diagnose prostate cancer (prostate biopsy) may cause side effects, including bleeding and infection. Prostate cancer treatment may cause incontinence and erectile dysfunction. For these reasons, it is important that the benefits and risks of diagnostic procedures and treatment be taken into account when considering whether to undertake prostate cancer screening.

Understanding Glaucoma
Dr Hareesh K V Abhishek Nethradhama HIG2024, 3rd B cross, ‘B’ Sector, ICICI bank road, near SBI,Yelahanka New town Bangalore -64 Ph: 08040933219/7795715203
Glaucoma is the name given to a group of conditions in which the optic nerve sustains damage where it leaves the eye.
I
n many cases, damage is associated with a rise in pressure within the eye. As the pressure builds, it compresses the fragile blood vessels supplying the optic nerve, which sends messages to the brain. If left untreated, this can lead to irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Causes Glaucoma: A clear liquid called aqueous humor flows through the eye nourishing the lens, iris, and cornea. When the delicate mesh that forms the drainage system becomes defective (called open angle Glaucoma) or completely blocked (called closed angle Glaucoma) the liquid continues to flow into the eye and pressure builds. It is this build-up of pressure which causes Glaucoma. Recognizing the Symptoms: The most common form of Glaucoma, open angle, starts gradually with darkening at the outer edges of your sight (peripheral vision) and gives no warning symptoms until a very late stage, when much irreversible damage has been done to the field of vision. Without treatment it can progress to complete blindness. A much less common form of Glaucoma, acute closed angle, starts with severe pain in the eye, headache, blurring of vision, halos around sources of light. This needs immediate treatment. Progressive loss of vision in open-angle glaucoma Who is at risk for Glaucoma? It is important for each of us, from infants to senior citizens, to have our eyes checked regularly, because early detection and treatment of glaucoma are the only ways to prevent vision impairment and blindness. This may apply to you if: ªª You are 55 years & above and have not had your eyes examined regularly ªª Someone in your family has a history of glaucoma 1 Myopia (nearsighted) Diagnosing Glaucoma: An annual eye examination is as important as a regular vision test. This examination will measure both the pressure within the eye, funduscopy (Cup/Disc ratio) and the field of vision. These tests together are more effective in the detection of Glaucoma than the standard eye test alone. A regular
FEBRUARY
test of the pressure within the eye can detect Glaucoma. (Tonometry) Treatment: Although treatment can control Glaucoma, and possibly avoid or delay the need for surgery, sight loss cannot be recovered so early detection and treatment are vital. Most drug treatments aim to reduce the production or drainage of fluids in the eye. It is very important to use prescribed medication regularly and not to miss doses.
¾¾
Other treatments
Laser Treatment: If the condition cannot be controlled using medication, it may be necessary to have laser surgery. The drainage holes are opened using a laser beam and the pressure within the eye is then controlled with the appropriate medication. Surgery: An eye specialist may recommend surgery to help control Glaucoma through which the aqueous fluid can escape from within the eye and drain away under the loose covering of the eye (conjunctiva). Eye Care: Eye drops should be applied correctly to be of maximum benefit. Consult your doctor for correct administration of drops.
Remember ªª Glaucoma is not curable, but it is manageable usually with simple medications such as eye drops and pills.
ªª All age groups are at risk for glaucoma, though ªª
ªª ªª
ªª
21
elderly persons above the age of 60 years are more at risk. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. About 10% of patients with glaucoma who receive proper treatment may still have loss of vision. Loss of vision from glaucoma is irreversible. You can protect yourself from loss of vision due to glaucoma through regular eye examinations, taking your medication as prescribed and good eye care. Surgery is done when medications are not effective or they cause intolerable adverse effects. Surgery is effective in relieving glaucoma, but the condition can recur even after surgery. Many people have productive lives despite having glaucoma. Ensure good lighting at the work place and get magnification of texts if needed. Maintain good communication with your employer / supervisor. Above all, be positive!

Stem cells are capable of dividing indefinitely in culture, and give rise to specialized cells. The ability to divide, or to grow, indefinitely in culture is a very important feature of stem cells. This ability to stay alive continuously makes it possible to conduct a variety of experiments, while reducing the variables within experiments. In addition, the fact that stem cells can give rise to specialized cells is key to stem cells’ potential to cure diseases. Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine which developed in India. Now a days this system is gaining importance because of its efficacy and safety. Specialty of Ayurveda treatment is that it is time tested, safe and effective, devoid of any side effect; do not damage any of the vital organs, and acts very fast.
I
t seems that most of Indians are not aware of the raw materials used in Ayurveda preparations. Many times we see negative information about Ayurveda reported in the media. Recently Europe banned using Ayurveda medicines in their country. The cause for this was the long term use of Aristolochia Indica which is called as Ishwari mula in Sanskrit. This had caused renal damage in a lady. However, this is not an herb mentioned in classical Ayurveda text and is not commonly used in Ayurvedic preparation, Ishwari mula is toxic and our saints knew regarding the toxicity of this herb. However in Raja nighantu, a recent book which explains use of different herbs, it is mentioned that it can be used in snake bite. In this book, the anti toxic activity of the Ishwari mula in small doses is highlighted. But in regular practice it is used only for external application in inflammatory swellings and allergic skin diseases. If this is taken in high dose this may prove lethal. So in European lady’s case they used a wrong herb, prescribed by wrong person. Therefore the entire system of
AYURPHARMA
Ayurveda should not be blamed. The use of Ayurveda medicines is a daily practice for Indians and therefore it is very essential to know regarding the raw materials used in Ayurveda treatment. They are mainly of three types ªª Plant origin drugs ªª Animal origin drugs ªª Minerals and heavy metals More than 600 plants are used in Ayurveda practice from the time of Charaka and Sushrutha and few are added since last 800 years. Time of Sushrutha is considered as around 300 BC, Charaka is around 100BC to 50 AD, the original script of Charaka samhitha is called as AGNIVESHA SAMHITHA, period of this is believed as around 10000 BC by some and 5000 BC by some other historians. So use of these 600 plants has history of more than 7000 years by human beings which is considered as very safe. In ancient Ayurveda they used very fewer mild toxic drugs, but they never used any of the highly toxic drugs, mainly during Brihaththrayee period, that is from 300 BC to 600 AD. Books written before 300 BC are not available in present day. When Rasa (minerals and heavy metals) preparations came into use that is after 900AD, many mild toxic drugs and many poisonous herbs are also used in combinations. These highly potent toxic herbs were used in these Rasa preparations to enhance the potency of the combinations. The toxic herbs are used only after purification methods. For example seed of strychnous nuxvomica is highly poisonous, the fatal dose is just 1.3 gram. This is used in many Rasa preparations but in small dose, purification of this seed is by soaking this seed in urine of Cow for 7 days followed by boiling the seeds in Cow’s milk, seed will loose the major portion of the toxic alkaloid strychnine when purified in this method. Agnitundi vati is a Rasa preparation containing 1/32 part of mercury as mercurous sulfide (absorption of mercurous sulfide is negligible when compared with that of mercuric sulfide. Absorption of both mercuric and mercuros sulfide are negligible and there is not even a single acute or chronic toxicity case reported with

be converted to gold. They were very much interested in mercury because of its unique nature, being a metal it is like liquid. Many alchemists of that period claimed that they invented the method of getting gold from mercury and said that the method is secret and hence many alchemists of that time were working on it. They also explained 18 type of processing which is popularly known in Ayurveda literature as ASTADASHA SAMSKARA as purification method of mercury. When they were working hard on this they found many new things, they observed change in color of different metals and mixtures after some processing and many people in road show started performing magic showing these color changes. Gradually they came to know that these metals after processing with other herbs and minerals when converted in to oxides and sulfides posses very good medicinal value and they started working on these at around 600 AD and took nearly 300 years to successfully implement this knowledge in medicine. From 900 AD till 1500 very few heavy metals and minerals were in use, mainly mercury, iron, sulfur etc, and minerals like sea shells and other sea products. At around 1500 AD this part of Ayurveda developed to its full extent and even today we follow the same knowledge. At this time oxides of gold, silver, arsenic, diamond etc came in to use. The dosage of these preparations after mixing with many herbs is 40mg to 250mg per day; they found these preparations very safe at this dose. So when Ayurvedists practice Rasa preparations, they should be very careful that the dose should be within the safe mentioned dose as said in Ayurveda texts. Many times unknowingly some Ayurvedists prescribe two or three such Rasa preparations together which are not advisable. We at UKKINADKAS AYURVEDA, strictly follow these dosage, we prepare all Rasa preparations according to the text dosage. For example dosage of Tribhuvan kirthi rasa is 125mg to
these two forms of mercury through oral use till date world wide, in Ayurveda these are the only two forms of mercury which is in use) and ½ part of strychnous nuxvomica along with other 15 ingredients, here the dose is 125 to 250 mg per day. This tablet weighing 50 mg can be given three times a day with very good result in many conditions even for long time without any complications. Here the weight of purified Nuxvomica seed is just 25 mg and per day consumption is just 75 mg, after purification fatal dose is more than 150 tablets if taken at a time. This combination is very popular and effective and in use since last 1100 years, used continuously for more than 3 years in human beings without any complication. Many animal origin drugs are also in use. Few examples are GOROCHANA- gall stone of cow, Urine of cow, Milk, flesh of goat, blood of Rabbit, Goat etc. From 300 AD onwards Ayurveda suffered a lot because of Buddhist rulers who banned the important and well developed part of Ayurveda Surgery. They considered surgery as HIMSA and ADHAMA (invalid and cheap valued) treatment. So Ayrvedists were in search of potent medicines to treat many surgical conditions.
Use of minerals and heavy metals in Ayurveda: During ancient period till 900 AD, only few minerals and metals were in use. Shilajithu a petroleum product from ore, Pancha lavanas that is the five types of naturally available salts, some naturally available alkalis and powder of rusted iron. At around 100AD many alchemists were trying to get something new from different metals. The story of Evolution of RASASHASTRA in Ayurveda is very interesting. During 100 AD there lived a great alchemist namely NAGARJUNACHARYA, who was trying to get GOLD from MERCURY. Alchemist of that time strongly believed that after administering different processes with different herbs and metals mercury can

‹‹ T hen why so much of anti propaganda against Rasa preparations?
Ayurveda doctors mainly in north India started using these heavy metals in heavy dose to get fast result. Even today many Ayurveda companies from north India prepare tablets weighing 250mg mentioning the dose as 1 to 2 tablets three times daily in their brochure. For example there is one preparation called Smrithisagara ras, mainly used in psychiatric cases, in epilepsy and in insomnia. This prepration contains arsenic and other four heavy metals, so the dosage should not exceed 50 to 100 mg per day, here even though the text allows bit higher dose we restrict our use to 40 mg per day where we get expected result. So many times we need to fix the dosage as per the present allowed dose. But even I feel that the north Indian manufacturers should re standardize the dose of such medicines where toxic heavy metals and other toxic herbs are used. But the main medicines used in Ayurveda are herbs, not the heavy metals. In our daily practice we use these heavy metal drugs very rarely and in selected diseases. We at Ukkinadkas Ayurveda follow the Keralian Ayurveda practice where use of these Rasa preparations is very less. Any how it is safe for the patient if you question your doctor regarding the ingredient of the medicines, and if it contains any of the heavy metals, ask regarding the weight of each and every heavy metals in it, ask regarding the safe dosage etc from your doctor, because almost all Ayureda doctors are aware of safe dose and they will definitely guide you regarding this. We all agree with Newton’s formula that, for every action there will be a reaction. So even Ayurveda medicines sometimes can produce severe reactions, but almost 95% of the herbal preparations used in
Use of Rasa preparations was very safe till the introduction of Allopathic drugs. When allopathic drugs came to India, it was possible to cure many of the infectious diseases which were incurable earlier, quick symptomatic relief drugs like pain killers, broncho dilators and many such other fast acting drugs also came in to use, in which Ayurveda was lacking. So many
Ayurevda are totally safe, can be taken without any serious adverse affects. But while using Rasa preparations we should be very careful. So it is wise to use all Ayurveda preparation under the guidance of expert Ayurveda practitioner.
250mg per day, we make tablet of 42mg where we can give this tablet in three divided doses and we do not prescribe Rasa preparation unless it is very essential. Iron, Zinc, Copper etc are components of our body, minerals like calcium etc are also essential part of our body. These heavy metals plays major role in different levels in formation of Red Blood cells, as catalyst in many metabolic activities etc. Some other heavy metals like mercury, Lead, Tin etc are not body components but used for its special therapeutic action. For example Mercury is one of the best anti allergic and anti auto immune drug, so we successfully use such heavy metals in rheumatoid arthritis, Bronchial asthma like diseases, but in contrary as per the modern observation mercury in high dose induces the auto immune disease. Being a time tested medicine and used since 500 to 1000 years without any complications, proves the safety of these medicines. Lot of research work is also going on with these preparations worldwide as per the modern methodology.

PANCHATANTRAS For healthy life
Working President Nisarga Hospital Sirsi, UK district - 581401 Ph: 08384-226578/225414 E-mail: drvhegde@yahoo.com Mob: 9448729434
PANCHATANTRAS are the simple principles which help to gather health in our hands. The principles are in the form of 4, 3, 2, 1 & 1 1ST PRINCIPLE : THE PRINCIPLE OF DRINKING 4 LITRES OF WATER/DAY
surplus amount of liquid foods including water /fruits/ Fruit juices/Butter milk/tender coconut water can be taken. Indigestion leads to many other associated complaints including constipation, piles, acidity….... So if the GIT is proper, we can get rid of many diseases.
“Why it can’t be 3 liters”? May be the Question posed by you, because the earth is surrounded by 80% of water similarly our body is also composed of 80% of water. Less consumption of water leads to burning micturition, constipation, piles, acidity & many other GIT disturbances. Water can play a vital role in all these problems. In addition to that water is considered to be a “Universal Solvent”. It dissolves the waste products and helps to eliminate it from the body, by the means of urine, faeces and exhaled air and thus helping to keep the body healthy. Copious amount of water drinking or at least drinking a cup of water in empty stomach will cure many diseases. Water entering into the stomach will send signals to the GIT, which is termed as the “Gastro colic reflex”, which helps to evacuate the bowels. If the body is freed from the toxic materials, we feel ourselves free, rejuvenated and thus developing a good habit. Copious water drinking should be avoided just before having food, the water drunk dilutes the digestive juices, thereby again can hamper digestion. Water can be drunk 1 hour before or after food. Tender Coconut Water, Butter Milk can also be taken more. Thereby the copious water drinking helps to prevent our body from much illness.
3RD PRINCIPLE: 2 TIMES PRAYER A DAY WITH CONCENTRATION AND DEVOTION Every dharma has given importance to prayers. Mahatma Gandhiji introduced the “Rama Naama”. Prayer can solve any problems. Prayer plays a mediator of the body and mind; thereby providing food for the mind .Prayer can keep one away from stress and also check psychosomatic illness, which are on a rise in this era. ªª WHEN TO DO PRAYER? Prayer should be done daily, early in the morning with concentration and devotion. ªª WHERE TO DO? Prayer can be done as soon as getting up from the bed /after taking bath. ªª WHAT TO PRAY? Oh god! As I am about to begin a new day ,let my day be fine ,let me capable enough to finish all my duties, lead me towards the right path. ªª HOW TO PRAY? Prayer can be done by chanting 108 times the name of your favorite god. Prayer helps to increase self confidence. Prayer can be done 2 times, early in the morning as well as retiring to the bed.
2ND PRINCIPLE: 3 TIMES SOLID FOOD A DAY.
Common schedule of a person may include more than 5 -6 times of solid food/day including the snacks and main course meals, thereby hampering digestion. For eg: the mixer, when filled a completely to the brim and switched on, it spills, same way the digestion, in our body will also the impaired, if we over load it. So the system should be given enough time to digest the food properly, by taking only solid food 3 times a day. In between
FEBRUARY
4TH PRINCIPLE: INDICATES WEEKLY ONE DAY FASTING Fasting is the process of giving rest to the digestive organs. ªª WHEN TO DO? Fasting can be done at least once in a week. ªª WHAT TO DO? During fasting copious amount of water/any fruit Juices are / Lemon Juice honey /tender coconut water should be taken or else fruits can be taken. Fruits are rich in fiber and water content, can be digested within 1-2 hours. So fresh seasonal

uu fruits or fruit juices can be taken. In disease condition, Fasting helps by directing the blood flow, away from the GIT (required to digest the food) to other parts of the body, which is in need. When food is taken, the blood circulation is rushed into the GIT for digestion there by making drowsy, by undergoing fasting; the blood circulation needed for digestion is diverted to other areas. Fasting can be done by consuming only liquid items/ Juices/ butter milk /tender coconut water without any added sugar to the juices, instead of that Jaggery/honey can be substituted.

Extremely low – calorie diets may help you shed pounds quickly, but they’ll lead to failure in the long run. That’s because humans are genetically protected against starvation. During food shortages, our bodies slow down our metabolisms and burn less energy so we can stay alive. The hypothalamus keeps us on an even weight keep by creating a “set point.” That’s the weight where we feel comfortable. The hypothalamus determines this point based on the level of consumption it’s used to. It seeks to keep our weight constant, even if that point is over what it should be. When we drastically cut back our food intake, the brain thinks the body is starving, and in an effort to preserve life, it slows the metabolism. Soon the pounds stop coming off. Consequently, we grow hungry and uncomfortable and then eat more. And then the diet fails. Plant foods break down slowly in your stomach, making you feel full longer, and they are rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements, carbohydrates and protein for energy and muscle - building. This allows your body to burn off its excess stored fat.
FOODS THAT HELP IN BURNING FAT EASILY
Each one of the following foods is clinically proven to promote weight loss. These foods go a step beyond simply adding no fat to your system – they possess special properties that add zip to your system and help your body melt away unhealthy pounds. These incredible foods can suppress your appetite for junk food and keep your body running smoothly with clean fuel and efficient energy. Apples : These marvels of nature elevate your blood glucose (sugar) levels in a safe, gentle manner and keep them up longer than most foods. The practical effect of this is to leave you feeling satisfied longer, say researchers. Secondly, they’re one of the richest sources of soluble fibers in the supermarket. This type of fiber prevents hunger pangs by guarding against dangerous swings or drops in your blood sugar level. An average size apple provides only 81 calories and has no sodium, saturated fat or cholesterol. You’ll also get the added health benefits of lowering the level of cholesterol already in your blood as well as lowering your blood pressure. Grapefruit : An average sized grapefruit has 74 calories, delivers a whopping 15 grams of pectin (the special fiber linked to lowering cholesterol and fat), is high in vitamin C and potassium and is free of fat and sodium. It’s rich in natural

galacturonic acid, which adds to its potency as a fat and cholesterol fighter. The additional benefit here is assistance in the battle against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and the development of heart disease. Peppers : A mere three grams of chilli peppers were added to a meal consisting of 766 total calories. The peppers’ metabolism-raising properties worked like a charm, leading to a diet-induced thermic effect. It doesn’t take much to create the effect. Peppers are astonishingly rich in vitamins A and C, abundant in calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium, high in fiber, free of fat, low in sodium and have just 24 calories per cup. Spinach : According to Dr. Richard Shekelle, an epidemiologist at the University of Texas. Spinach has the ability to lower cholesterol, rev up the metabolism and burn away fat. Rich in iron, beta carotene and vitamins C and E, it supplies most of the nutrients you need. Beans: Beans are one of the best sources of plant protein. Most common beans have 215 calories per cooked cup. They have the most protein with the least fat of any food, and they’re high in potassium but low in sodium. Studies show that eating beans regularly can lower cholesterol levels. The most common complaint about beans is that they cause gas. Before cooking, rinse the beans and remove foreign particles, put in a kettle and cover with boiling water, soak for four hours or longer, remove any beans that float to the top, then cook the beans in fresh water. Berries: Berries have natural fructose sugar that satisfies your longing for sweets and enough fiber so you absorb fewer calories than you eat. Berries are a great source of potassium that can assist you in blood pressure control. Blackberries have 74 calories per cup, blueberries 81, raspberries 60 and strawberries 45 calories. Tomatoes; A medium tomato (2.5” diameter) has only about 25 calories. These garden delights are low in fat and sodium, high in potassium and rich in fiber. A survey at Harvard Medical School found that the chances of dying of cancer are lowest among people who eat tomatoes (or strawberries) every week. Carrots: A medium-sized carrot carries about 55 calories and is a nutritional powerhouse. The orange colour comes from beta carotene, a powerful cancer-preventing nutrient (provitamin A). Combine them with parsnips, oranges, raisins, lemon juice, potatoes or broccoli to create flavourful dishes. Spice them with tarragon, dill, cinnamon or nutmeg. Add finely chopped carrots to soups and spaghetti sauce – they impart a natural sweetness without adding sugar.

Healthy Diet
DO YOU LOVE UR FOOD? OFCOURSE YOU DO. BUT DOES IT LOVE YOU BACK? NOT SURE!!!
T
here are many people who simply love eating as if they live to eat. We’ve developed in to a fast paced society with almost no time for lengthy menu preparation. There is a craze for eating fast foods, junk food stuffs which only add to your weight with no nutritional value. Always its a big question mark or confusion for people to decide what to eat and what not to eat for a healthy life. During childhood, cultivating right eating habits is of paramount importance. A child’s diet should be well balanced. A well balanced diet consists of 7 major classes of nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, dietary fibre, minerals, proteins, vitamins and water.

HEALTHY EATING
Tips to have a healthy nutritional lifestyle are to eat a balanced diet. Bright vegetables have more vitamins and nutrients. So the red, greens and yellow vegetables should be eaten on a daily basis. Bright fruits are also full of nutrients with lot of natural sugar in them as well. Proteins and fibres are also important to include but again the amounts can be smaller than the veg portions of your meals. This will help you get less fat, calories and cholesterol while increasing in minerals, vitamins and nutrients intake. A fact that many people don’t know is that a human body needs 40 unique nutrients to stay healthy on a regular basis. You must eat a variety of food to gain all 40 nutrients. Prepare variety of meals than going for variety in meals and serve a variety of foods so you and your family will stay healthy and get all 40 nutrients throughout the days and weeks of their life. A balanced diet means consuming from all the different good groups in the required quantities. Nutritionists say there are 5 main food groups. ªª Whole grains (We should consume at least 3 ounces of whole grains ) ªª Fruits and vegetables (Consumes 5 portions of fruits and vegetables each day ) ªª Proteins ( should make up about 20 % of our nutrition intake) ªª Dairy Products(2-3 servings of milk and alternatives) ªª Fat and Sugar Remember eating right can rhythm your life and make it pleasant to enjoy as you grow older because your body will be healthy enough enjoy the years ahead. Eat your breakfast like a rich, take your lunch

this habit can cause acid reflux. Try to eat your food for at least 20 minutes, because that’s the time your brain receives the message that you are satiated, so eat slowly and enjoy your meal. Not chewing the food: Is a result of eating very quickly and cause same problems and even indigestion. Skipping Breakfast: If you are always in a big hurry and breakfast is not for you soon your body system will slow down to conserve energy and store calories that will affect in metabolism and your ability to concentrate. You will probably eat more at lunch and dinner that is more likely to result in overweight or even obesity .Eat your breakfast within 2 hours after waking up. Coffee drinking: You should know that coffee is natural contraceptive. People who are addicted may have problems in procreation. Eating Junk foods: This may harm your health, can hinder your digestion and can be a major cause of constipation and many of the major digestive disorders. Sugar and artificial sweeteners: It is wrong to think that having your tea sweetened with something artificial instead of sugar may add you some bonuses at your health, skipping this way a lot of calories. Artificial sweeteners trick the brain so you feel less satiated and consume more calories. Drinking Carbonated Drinks: These erode teeth enamel and are one of the main causes in kidney stone production.
Importance of fruits and vegetables in diet
What’s so good about fruits and vegetables you cry? Well we mustn’t forget either that the majority of fruits and vegetables contain no unhealthy fats or cholesterol and are very low in calories all of which will help us to maintain fantastic figure and prevent us from piling on the pounds.

Different coloured fruits and vegetable contain different minerals, nutrient s and anti oxidants and therefore it is recommended that we consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetable in order to receive the benefits from the various types .For example dark green leafy vegetables such as cabbage and spinach contain certain carotenoids that protect ,delay or may prevent the onset of degenerative age related eye diseases such as cataract or macular de generation. They are also rich in Vitamin C and E ,which are both powerful anti oxidants ,which means that eating dark green vegetables daily could help to protect the body from developing cancerous cells and from suffering heart disease. Red ,orange and yellow coloured fruits and vegetables such as water melon ,tomatoes, carrots and apricots contain lots of vitamin A,C and E helps to fight cancer and acts by neutralizing free radicals in the body .It also contains rich amount of Vitamin B and K plus minerals such as potassium ,calcium, phosphorous, manganese and iron. Don’t always stick to same foods, as you could still lack some nutrients. Make sure that you include variety of foods in variety of colours –the brighter the better.
cholesterol and the amount of insulin needed to process the blood sugar after eating.
DIABETIC DIET
Eating right is vital if you’re trying to prevent or control diabetes. While exercise is also important, what you eat has the biggest impact when it comes to weight loss. But what does eating right for diabetes mean? Your may be surprised to hear that your nutritional needs are virtually the same everyone else: no special foods or complicated diets are necessary. A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories. It is a healthy diet for anyone! The only difference is that you need to pay more attention to some of your food choices—most notably the carbohydrates you eat.
Myths and facts about diabetes and diet
MYTH: You must avoid sugar at all costs. Fact: The good news is that you can enjoy your favourite treats as long as you plan properly. Dessert doesn’t have to be off limits, as long as it’s a part of a healthy meal plan or combined with exercise. MYTH: A high-protein diet is best. Fact: Studies have shown that eating too much protein, especially animal protein, may actually cause insulin resistance, a key factor in diabetes. A healthy diet includes protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Our bodies need all three to function properly. The key is a balanced diet. MYTH: You have to cut way down on carbs. Fact: Again, the key is to eat a balanced diet. The serving size and the type of carbohydrates you eat are especially important. Focus on whole grain carbs since they are a good source of fibre and they are digested slowly, keeping blood sugar levels more even. MYTH: You’ll no longer be able to eat normally. You need special diabetic meals. Fact: The principles of healthy eating are the same— whether or not you’re trying to prevent or control diabetes. Expensive diabetic foods generally offer no special benefit. You can easily eat with your family and friends if you eat in moderation. Diabetes and diet tip 1: Choose high-fibre, slowrelease carbs Carbohydrates have a big impact on your blood sugar levels—more so than fats and proteins—but you don’t have to avoid them. You just need to be smart about what types of carbs you eat. In general, it’s best to limit highly refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, and rice, as well as soda, candy, and snack foods. Focus instead on high-fibre complex carbohydrates—also known as slow-release carbs. Slow-release carbs help keep blood sugar levels even because they are
Importance of fibre rich Diet
Fibre is an indigestible part of all plant foods (it is used by plants to build their cell walls). It is found in fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. Your digestive system cannot stomach fibre (also known as cellulose), so it is excreted undigested. Well, you may think you don’t need fibre, because it’s excreted undigested, but that’s not true. The average amount of fibre intake is about 25-30 grams per day. Unfortunately most people regular diets include less than 10-15 grams daily. all bran cereal beans (kidney and butter) peas spinach sweet corn wholemeal brown bread red cabbage carrots baked potato with skin apples bananas oranges and many others There are two types of fibre – soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre dissolves in water in the intestinal tract, it forms glue like gel, which softens stools (no more constipation) and slows down stomach emptying, which means better digestion (no more indigestion). You feel fuller longer – that’s the effect that helps you eat less food, which is rich in fibre, and your digestive tract uses more energy to digest it. This way your body burns additional calories and you can lose weight. Of course it takes some time to reach your desired weight, but you won’t be starving, and yet you’ll be losing weight – isn’t it great? Insoluble fibre acts in the gastrointestinal tract. It’s an excellent natural laxative, because of its abilities to hold onto water and to push waste faster along the intestines (leaving less time for cancerous substances in your stool to have contact with the lining of the bowel) – this way fibre decreases the risk of colon cancer and also helps prevent haemorrhoids by adding bulk and softening stools. Soluble fibre is also known to help lowering

digested more slowly, thus preventing your body from producing too much insulin. They also provide lasting energy and help you stay full longer.
High Blood Pressure and the DASH Diet The DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is an example of such an eating plan. In studies, patients who were on the DASH diet reduced their blood pressure within two weeks. Another diet -- DASH-Sodium -- calls for reducing sodium (salt) to 1,500 mg a day (about 2/3 teaspoon). Studies of patients on the DASH-Sodium plan significantly lowered their blood pressure. ªª Cutting back on foods that are high in saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat ªª Eating more whole grain products, fish, poultry, and nuts ªª Eating less red meat and sweets ªª Eating foods that are rich in magnesium, potassium, and calcium ªª Eating more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods Here are some tips to get you started on the DASH diet: ªª Add a serving of vegetables at lunch and at dinner. ªª Add a serving of fruit to your meals or as a snack. Canned and dried fruits are easy to use. ªª Use only half the butter, margarine, or salad dressing, and use low-fat or fat-free condiments. ªª Try eating some vegetarian meals. ªª Add more vegetables, rice, pasta, and dry beans to your diet. ªª Instead of typical snacks (chips, etc.), eat unsalted pretzels or nuts, raisins, graham crackers, low-fat and fat-free yogurt and frozen yogurt; unsalted plain popcorn with no butter, and raw vegetables. ªª Read food labels carefully to choose products that are lower in sodium. Staying on the DASH Diet The following is a list of food groups and suggested serving amounts for the DASH diet: ªª Grains: 7-8 daily servings ªª Vegetables: 4-5 daily servings ªª Fruits: 4-5 daily servings ªª Low-fat or fat-free dairy products: 2-3 daily servings ªª Meat, poultry and fish: 2 or less daily servings ªª Nuts, seeds, and dry beans: 4-5 servings per week ªª Fats and oils: 2-3 daily servings ªª Sweets: try to limit to less than 5 servings per week By following these simple healthy food habits and exercise one can control these chronic ailments and one can even continue in a good and healthy state of life. Let food be our medicine not vice versa.

8 principles of low-glycemic eating 1. Eat a lot of non-starchy vegetables, beans, and fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, and berries. Even tropical fruits like bananas, mangoes, and papayas tend to have a lower glycemic index than typical desserts. 2. Eat grains in the least-processed state possible: “unbroken,” such as whole-kernel bread, brown rice, and whole barley, millet, and wheat berries; or traditionally processed, such as stone-ground bread, steel-cut oats, and natural granola or muesli breakfast cereals. 3. Limit white potatoes and refined grain products such as white breads and white pasta to small side dishes. 4. Limit concentrated sweets—including high-calorie foods with a low glycemic index, such as ice cream— to occasional treats. Reduce fruit juice to no more than one cup a day. Completely eliminate sugar-sweetened drinks. 5. Eat a healthful type of protein at most meals, such as beans, fish, or skinless chicken. 6. Choose foods with healthful fats, such as olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), and avocados. Limit saturated fats from dairy and other animal products. Completely eliminate partially hydrogenated fats (trans fats), which are in fast food and many packaged foods. 7. Include low calorie fruits and raw vegetables in daily dietary pattern 8. Eat slowly and stop when full. Diabetes is well managed in our hospital with a very healthy and liberal dietary pattern, exercises and Naturopathy treatment modalities with a strong research background which can be easily practised at home.

The ayurvedic rejuvenatory treatment practiced nowadays is called panchakarma. The scope of Ayurvedic treatment includes Aushada, Aahara and Vihara. In Panchakarma, pancha refers to ‘five’ and karma refers to the ‘action’. The panchakarma is soley based on once prakruthi and the disease. Here treatment and prevention are collateral leading to a metamorphosis of body, mind and spirit

Poorvakarma – Preparatory Stage Pradhanakarma- Main course of treatment Paschat Karma- Post treatment care which includes diet, do’s and don’ts The five fold purification therapy mainly aims at correcting the imbalance of doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in order to maintain an equilibrium in the body.
Panchakarma includes 5 cleansing procedures namely,:
Vamana: Expulsion of the doshas through emesis. It is drug induced. It is mainly indicated in Kaphaja vikaras like asthama, cough, skin disorders, acne etc. Virechana: Here drugs that induce bowels movements and cause purgation are used. This is specially done for elimination of pitta & related disorders. Nasya: This is a method of instillation of medicated oil/powder through nostrils .The nostrils are considered as door way to the brain and thus method is helpful in conditions like allergic sinusitis, migranes, epilepsy etc. Basti: This is a method of administering medicated enema, mainly useful to allevate vata. It is mainly helpful in low back ache, dystrophy & atrophy of nerves and muscles. Bastis are mainly of 2 types

Niroha Basti: It is the enema using special decoction powder, paste, oil etc Raktamokshana: It is the method of bloodletting using leech or other aids. It is mainly administered in raktaja disorders.
All of us understand that next to the need for food, water & sleep, the urge for sex is the most needed biological drive. Human sex is not merely a physical mating but is the union of two bodies, minds and souls.
S
ex & Ayurveda -Sex has always been an issue of dichotomy. An integral part of our lives and essential for the continuation of the species, it is far more than just a technical necessity. While social structures in India are quite strict on this, the study of sex - from both its physical and psychological perspectives - has been practiced here from ancient times. Unlike in the west, where this is a fairly recent phenomenon and they are yet to find the proper line of distinction between sex in general and pornography in particular. On the other hand Maharishi Vatsayan’s Kamasutra is yet unparalleled as the most comprehensive documentation ever on the practice of sex. Unfortunately, its classic treatment of the act and the art has often been misrepresented. The ancient Ayurvedic text of Charaka Samhita provided complete sexual solutions over 3000 years ago And the time-frozen, stone-carved, erotic sculptures in the temples at Khajuraho and Konarak leave millions of visitors utterly awe-struck by their sheer beauty, elegance and variety. An undying testimony to how intrinsic sex was to the daily lives of people in ancient India. The importance of sex in our lives has
