Dental care When you’ve had a tooth extracted (removed), you need to take care of your mouth. Doing certain things, even on the first day, may help you feel better and heal faster. Control Bleeding To help control bleeding, bite firmly on the gauze placed by your dentist. The pressure helps to form a blood clot in the tooth socket. If you have a lot of bleeding, bite on a regular tea bag. The tannic acid in the tea aids in forming a blood clot. Bite on the gauze or the tea bag until the bleeding stops.
Minimize Pain
Caring for your mouth
To lessen any pain, take prescribed medication as directed. Don’t drive while taking any pain medication as you may feel drowsy. Ask your dentist if you may take over-the-counter medication, if needed.
Reduce Swelling
After a Tooth Extraction
To reduce swelling, put an ice pack on your cheek near the extraction site. You can make an ice pack by putting ice in a plastic bag and wrapping it in a thin towel. Apply the ice pack to your cheek for 10 minutes. Then, remove it for 5 minutes. Repeat as needed. You may see some bruising on your face. This is normal and will go away on its own.

Get Enough Rest
Eating While You Heal
Limit activities for the first 24 hours after an extraction. Rest during the day and go to bed early. When lying down, elevate your head slightly.
Eating right will help you heal faster after your tooth extraction. Eat regular meals as soon as you can after surgery. As you heal, try the tips below.
Do’S - Below are some things you can do to help your mouth heal. 1. Do eat a diet of soft, healthy foods and snacks. It may be easier for you to eat soft foods soon after your extraction. Drink plenty of liquids while you’re healing. 2. Do brush your teeth gently. 3. Avoid brushing around the extraction. And don’t use any toothpaste. Rinsing toothpaste from your mouth may dislodge the blood clot. 4. Do keep the extraction site clean. After 12 hours you may be able to gently rinse your mouth. 5. Rinse 4 times a day with 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. Check with your dentist first.
Start with Soft Foods and Liquids ªª At first, eat soft foods such as oatmeal, mashed ªª
Move on to Solid Foods ªª Cut foods into small pieces to ease chewing. ªª Use a blender for hard-to-chew foods, such as apples and carrots.
Be Careful when you Chew ªª Limit chewing. Avoid crunchy or sticky foods,
such as popcorn, taffy ‘ and nuts. On the side of your mouth that’s opposite the extraction
Don’t’s -
Below are some things to avoid while you’re healing1. Rinse your mouth very gently. Otherwise, blood clot may dislodge2. Don’t drink with a straw. Sucking on a straw may dislodge the blood clot. 3. Don’t drink hot liquids. Hot liquids may increase swelling. Limit your alcohol use. Excessive use of alcohol may slow healing. 4. Don’t smoke. Smoking may break down the blood clot, causing a painful tooth socket.
AYURPHARMA
potatoes, bananas, and soups. Also drink liquids high in nutrients such as vegetable and fruit juices or high-protein drinks.
Follow-up Visits ªª You may need to see your dentist to make sure you are healing right. With proper care, your mouth should heal in several weeks. Call your dentist if you have any problems.
ªª
Call Your Dentist If:
Pain becomes more severe the day after your extraction ªª Bleeding becomes hard to control (slight oozing of blood on the first day is normal) ªª Swelling around the extraction site worsens

Acne Treatment Things that You Must Know!

et me ask you some question... Are you suffering from acne? Do you know what is causing it and is there any effective acne treatment? Studies show that an estimated 80 % percent of people experience acne at some point. No one knows exactly what the cause of acne is, but there are a few theories. Let’s take a look at some of them: ªª Acne normally begins between the ages of eleven and thirteen: - This is true in both males and females due to changes in hormone levels. These hormones, called androgens, will enlarge the facial glands. The oil produced by the glands is known as sebum. The hair follicles shed dead cells too quickly and the cells and sebum form a blockage in the gland. ªª Pressure and rubbing from tight garments: - Adult with acne should avoid tight-collared shirts that might irritate the acne further. Adult athletes may notice an outbreak of acne from equipment such as backpacks or athletic helmets. ªª Acne can also be caused by genetics: - Studies have shown that a family history of acne can affect whether you have acne and the severity of it. So if your mother or father had acne as a teen, chances are that it will be a contributory factor to the cause of your acne. ªª Factors linked to women: - Women have several factors that men don’t that can be linked to the cause of acne. Women go through several phases of life that cause their hormone levels to change. These changes can cause acne in adult women between two and seven days before their menstrual cycle. ªª Pregnancy and hormones: - Pregnant women also experience a fluctuation in hormones. Those who may have previously had little or no acne may see pimples during their pregnancy and for a time after the birth of the baby until the hormone levels return to normal. ªª Menopause and hormones: - Menopause will cause changes in hormone levels for woman and can be a cause of acne. Women also tend to wear heavy makeup when experience an acne outbreak, which only worsens the problem by

Acne treatments
The sad part is that most of the acne products are sold over the counter for treatment. Most over-thecounter acne treatments are topical and come in the form of a cream, soap, lotion or gel. Acne products normally contain benzoyl peroxide (good for killing the bacteria and possibly reducing oil production), sulfur (helps eliminate blackheads and whiteheads) and/or salicylic acid (cuts down the speed of cell lose). More severe cases may require prescription acne medicine that is topical or oral. Oral acne medication can help reduce both the growth of the bacteria and inflammation of glands.
Home Remedy
People go for home made acne treatment depending upon the extent of damage the acne causes in an individual. The need for home made acne treatment arises to reduce or eliminate the outbreak of acne and to prevent scarring in the skin due to severe acne. Using benzoyl peroxide lotions in home made acne treatment helps in effective cure and prevention of new outbreaks of acne.
further clogging pores. Stress: - Especially in adults, stress can be another cause of acne. When you are stressed, the hormone cortisol is produced. Cortisol will worsen any acne you already have. To prevent stress-related acne, try relaxation and meditation. Some adults experience acne from picking at blemishes on their skin. You should never pick at or squeeze a pimple, blackhead or any other blemish on your face. This can only cause more acne and possibly an infection. When cleaning your face, avoid harsh facial cleansers (they cause the creation of more sebum) and scrubbing your face too vigorously.
Home remedies are best remedies to cure acne. ªª Some of the home remedies to cure

Home remedies to cure acne have no side affects if you’re not having any allergic to certain fruits and vegetables. Natural treatment and allopathic treatment are both available for acne treatment.

C OLONOSCOPY CURRENT SCENARIO AND APPLICATIONS
Since 1969 when Shinya and Wolff described the first total colonoscopy, significant technical advancements have been made in video colonoscopy providing breathtaking views of the colon and terminal ileum, revealing even the subtlest abnormalities of contour and color. Due to biopsy and therapeutic capability of colonoscopy it has replaced barium enema as the procedure of choice for evaluating colonic symptoms and has become the gold standard for detection and prevention of colorectal neoplasia.

Indications for colonoscopy
Diagnostic Colonoscopy ¾¾ Constipation
Constipation is a fairly frequent complaint in the community and is essential to understand what exactly the patient understands by the word constipation. Recent development of decreased frequency of stools, straining at stools, lumpy or hard stools, sense of incomplete evacuation of stools or sense of anorectal blockage could be the presentation of constipation. Colonoscopy would be helpful in ruling out mechanical causes like malignancy, post inflammatory stricture, diverticular myochosis (thickening of the circular muscle fibres of colon) or extrinsic compression to the colon. ¾¾ Diarrhea Diarrhea is a symptom not a disease in itself. Diarrhea could be defined as in increase in frequency of stools of more than three per day, increase in fluidity of stools or an increase in stool weight more than 400 grams. There could be multiple causes of diarrhea depending on acute or chronic onset, small bowel or colonic aetiologies. Colonic causes could be infective, inflammatory bowel disease, malignancy, ischemic colitis, radiation colitis, divericulitis, microscopic colitis or irritable bowel syndrome. Colonoscopy and biopsy serves important role in the diagnosis of diarrhea. ¾¾ Abdominal Pain
10
Abdominal pain could be due to various conditions ranging from sinister diseases like colonic malignancy, inflammatory strictures, colitis, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, tuberculosis to benign disorders like irritable bowel disease. It is important to rule out these more serious disease before we label a patient as irritable bowel syndrome or functional abdominal pain. ¾¾ Bleeding per rectum Bleeding per rectum is universally a colonic symptom unless there is significant rapid bleed from the upper gastro intestinal. Colonoscopy is the investigation of choice to diagnose the aetiolgy of the same. ¾¾ Unexplained iron deficiency anemia Colonoscopy could detect lesions which could be the cause of overt or occult blood loss like malignancy, polyps, ulcers, hemorrhoids, ischemic colitis, diverticlosis, angiodysplasia, vascular ectasias etc. ¾¾ Inflammatory Bowel Disease Ulcerative colitis by definition involves the colon, colonoscopy is essential to diagnose the extent of disease, severity of disease and response to treatment. Crohn’s disease involves colon in 70 % of the cases (50% along with small bowel involvement and 20% with isolated colonic involvement). Diagnosis of microscopic colitis and indeterminate colitis also warrants a colonoscopy.

successfully dilated with balloons with good results, before definitive surgery is offered. ¾¾ Acute Colonic Obstruction Acute colonic obstruction could be secondary to left sided malignancy, pelvic malignancy, colonic volvulous, other benign causes mentioned above or acute pseudo obstruction of colon (APOC). Endoscopic decompression has definite role in therapy of malignant obstruction, detorsion of colonic volvulous and management of APOC not responding to conservative measures. ¾¾ Colorectal stenting In patients with CRC and inoperable status or patients with CRC presenting with colonic obstruction can be subjected to placement of self expandable metallic stents (SEMS) which has been shown to improve morbidity and mortality figures. SEMS has also been used in refractory benign strictures before definitive surgery. ¾¾ Foreign Body Removal Colonoscope can be used for removal of accidental or intentional foreign bodies in the rectum and left colon
Intestinal Tuberculosis. Ileocaecal region is the commonest site for intestinal TB; colonoscopy with visualization of the terminal ileum, ileocaecal region and whole of the colon is an effective way for tissue diagnosis and PCR or culture for specific diagnosis of Tuberculosis. ¾¾ Screening and Diagnosis of Colonic malignancy Colorectal cancer (CRC) develops from adenomatous polyp to malignant polyp to a full blown malignancy. Colonoscopy screening for polyps and polypectomy has caused a 53 - 72% reduction in CRC incidence and a 31% reduction in CRC mortality among participants who received screening colonoscopy examinations. For screening individuals are divided into high risk (familial adenomatous polyposis syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]), increased risk (history of CRC or adenomatous polyp in any first degree relative before 60 years, or ≥ 2 first degree relatives at any age) and average risk individuals (≥ 50 years of age with no personal or family history of CRC and no personal history of IBD). High risk individuals should be offered screening colonoscopy from puberty and > 8 years of IBD; every year , in increased risk group at age of 40 yrs or 10 years before the age of youngest case in the family member; at intervals of 5-10 years and average risk from the age of 50 years at every 10 years.
Contraindications for Colonoscopy ªª Perforated intestine ªª Acute diverticulitis ªª Deep ulcerations ªª Severe ischemic necrosis ªª Fulminant colitis ªª Cardiopulmonary decompensation.
Theraupitic Colonoscopy ¾¾
Polypectomy Can be safely and effectively done in cases diagnosed at colonoscopy with current generation of electrocautery and polypectomy devices and can be subjected to histological diagnosis and further treatment according to biopsy. ¾¾ Control of Bleeding per Rectum Depending upon the cause vascular ectasias, angiodysplasia, ulcers, malignancy, diverticuli, Dieulafoy leision, hemorrhoids, rectal varices etc, we can accordingly control bleeding by electrocoagulation, argon plasma coagulation, injection therapy or haemoclips. ¾¾ Colonic Stricture Dilation Symptomatic colonic strictures secondary to surgical anastomosis, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemia, radiation, diverticulitis can be

more and more with the challenges of managing women with gynaecological malignancies who still wish to retain their fertility. Fertility-saving surgery is becoming more important and effective in giving women this option. High-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment for cancer are more effective but can severely affect the ovarian follicular store, compromising the fertility of surviving young patients. A promising alternative to prevent fertility loss in these patients is the cryopreservation and transplantation of ovarian tissue. The means of ovarian protection include

he choice of delaying pregnancy has become the norm for many women in developed countries. Among some women, however, achieving pregnancy may be difficult or impossible at a later time. The increase in the number of potentially affected women can be estimated based on cancer incidence and fecundity. For instance, even if the general incidence of primary pelvic malignancies is approximately 1/10 000, then a delay from age 24 to age 25 in the median age of first conception may expose a significant number of women to a cancer diagnosis before first planned or desired pregnancy. In recent years, surgeons all over the world have been trying to develop a successful procedure for transplanting ovarian tissue or indeed whole ovaries into infertile women, to help such women get pregnant. The good news is that surgeons have indeed succeeded in helping previously infertile women give birth to healthy babies. Women of reproductive age are increasingly delaying having children into their late 30s and 40s and, therefore, doctors and allied healthcare workers will be faced

surgical ovarian transplantation. Patients with cancer in children, teenagers and reproductive age young women, who are at risk of undergoing premature menopause as a result of primordial follicle damage induced by radio/chemotherapy treatment of different neoplasia . As there is concern about the safety of ovarian transplantation, it should be restricted to women whose ovaries are disease-free to avoid the transmission of cancer through the grafted tissue. Human ovarian tissue autotransplantation studies in humans have resulted in promising results. A new technique for women in their 20s or 30s could theoretically have an ovary removed and frozen, and then have it reimplanted years later when they are ready to have children as “We are in the middle of an infertility epidemic”. It’s a two-step method of ovarian transplant that has produced excellent results in women whose ovaries have been frozen because of cancer treatment. After transplanting patient’s own ovarian tissue she may start ovulating in few months and became pregnant naturally in few months after transplantation. The biggest problems of ovarian transplantation are the low response to stimulation caused by insufficient vascularisation of the transplanted tissue. Benefits of a whole ovary transplant include restoring fertility and natural hormone production, which helps prevent osteoporosis, heart disease and contributes to a woman’s general health. Ovarian transplantation therefore, is a new development which has given hope of conceiving to millions of infertile young women suffering from cancer and is the way of the future.

Preventing and Fixing Bad Breath Many people have bad breath without even realizing it which is the sign of ill health. This can cripple your likelihood of enjoying a healthy social life, finding a significant other, and even advancement in your career

alitosis or bad breath is mostly a result of poor hygiene and is completely treatable. One thing about halitosis is that even your best friend won’t tell you. That’s what they used to say about one of the most personal and often embarrassing problems commonly faced by millions of people. It is true that this can be a delicate subject. Chronic bad breath is a problem that is shared by millions of people across the country. Until recently, there really has not been an effective scientific approach to diagnose, treat or cure halitosis/chronic bad breath conditions. One of the basic things to understand about halitosis is that it is not a uniform, consistent condition. It can vary in several ways including but not limited to intensity, type and the occurrence of associated symptoms. Most people don’t know that about halitosis. Another common misconception about halitosis is that the causes are limited to what you eat and how well you take care of your teeth and gums. That is a potentially dangerous assumption. If you have bad breath, while unpleasant, is always harmless, that may prevent you from seriously examining your own condition and learning more about halitosis. In fact, there are many causes of this problem.

This type of halitosis is called physiological halitosis, meaning that it is caused by chemical processes generated by anaerobic bacteria in the mouth or throat. Some other causes are likewise minor and pose no significant threat to your state of health. However, the more about halitosis you know, the more likely you are to look for a specific cause because some of them are indeed serious and do pose risks to your health. These types of halitosis caused by these factors are called pathological halitosis. Basically, what you need to know about halitosis of this type is that it is systemic

in origin and denotes some form of functional disorder or disease. Identifying the cause is essential to find a lasting cure with any halitosis remedy or medication While bad breath or halitosis may be caused by poor dental hygiene and can certainly be aggravated by it, this is not the only cause. No matter what the cause the unpleasant odor can generally be attributed to a bacterial build up in the mouth. Bacteria exist in the mouth even in healthy individuals and they do interact with food residue or debris in the mouth producing a foul odor. Bad breath may even be aggravated or caused by poor eating habits and food choices or an unhealthy lifestyle. Diseases like anaemia may also lead to unpleasant breath. Conditions like liver or kidney disorders may cause halitosis, which is why if bad breath remedies and other home treatments do not produce any results you should get medical attention. Any condition of the nose, throat, respiratory tract, or stomach which are associated with chronic infection or local upsets of one sort or another, such as chronic tonsillitis, lung diseases like chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis, chronic gastritis and sinuses which cause a discharge at the back of the throat can be other cause of halitosis. Most cases of bad breath, however, are caused by gastro – intestinal disorders, intestinal sluggishness and particularly by chronic constipation. The unpleasant odour results from an exceptionally large amount of waste matter expelled through the lungs.

first thing every morning, and also after each time you take a nap. Foul – smelling bacteria have had a chance to take over your mouth while you slept, and are most likely causing yucky “morning breath.” After you brush your teeth and scrape your tongue, rinse your mouth thoroughly and gargle with fresh, cool water. This is a very important step, one that many people overlook. Very often the problem may be present only in the morning because the inactivity and lack of oxygen in the mouth during the night could cause the odor to worsen. The teeth should be cleaned twice a day, especially before going to bed at night. Meat particles should

be removed carefully with toothpicks. In case of decaying teeth and swollen and bleeding gums, a dentist should be consulted. Munching a raw apple or guava after lunch removes most of the trapped particles. The use of the twigs of the neem (margosa) tree as a toothbrush is the best method of cleaning the teeth Drink plenty of water – Insuring that you drink plenty of water throughout the day can help to control bad breath (halitosis). This can be an especially important consideration for those people who suffer from xerostomia (chronically dry mouths). If you allow yourself to become dehydrated your body will try to conserve moisture by reducing its production of saliva. Saliva has a cleansing and diluting effect on the bacteria and bacterial waste products that cause bad breath. A reduction in the amount of saliva in your mouth can make it harder for you to control odors associated with your breath. Rinse your mouth with water often – Rinsing with water can mitigate bad breath problems for brief periods of time. Rinsing will both dilute and partially remove the bacterial waste products that are the cause of breath odors. Stimulate your mouth’s flow of saliva – You can help to minimize bad breath odors by stimulating your mouth’s flow of saliva. This is because saliva has a cleansing and diluting effect on the bacteria and bacterial waste products that cause bad breath. One way to stimulate salivary flow is to chew on something. Doing so will trick your body in to thinking that it is getting a meal. And in preparation for digesting this meal your body will increase its production of saliva. Chewing gum, cloves, breath mints can also be used to stimulate salivary flow. If you elect to use one of these products make sure it is sugar – free since sweets will promote the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. ªª After you eat or drink anything (besides water), thoroughly rinse your mouth and gargle with water. Use this practice without fail, day and night, and you will keep abreast of nasty bacteria buildup in your mouth, which cause bad breath. Run your tongue along the surfaces of

This tea is prepared by putting one teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of cold water and allowing it to simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. It should then be strained and used as tea. ¾¾ Halitosis Treatment using Avocado : Another effective remedy for bad breath is avocado, which is far superior to any mouth lotion or remedies for this condition. It effectively removes intestinal putrefaction or decomposition which is one of the most important causes of bad breath. ¾¾ Halitosis Treatment using Guava : Unripe guava is useful in halitosis. It is rich in tannic, malic, oxalic, and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate, and manganese. Chewing it is an excellent tonic for the teeth and gums. It helps cure bleeding from gums and stops bad breath. Chewing tender leaves of guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath. ¾¾ Halitosis Treatment using Parsley : Parsley is a valuable cure for bad breath. Two cups of water should be boiled and several sprigs of parsley, coarsely chopped, should be steeped in this water along with two or three whole cloves or a quarter teaspoon of ground cloves. This mixture should be stirred occasionally while cooling. It should then be strained and used as a mouthwash or gargle several times a day. ¾¾ Halitosis Treatment using Raw Juices : All fruit and vegetable juices are beneficial in the treatment of halitosis and should be taken liberally by those suffering from this disorder. Juices from green vegetables are especially valuable. ¾¾ A Well Balanced Diet : Patients suffering from halitosis should take a well - balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits, with emphasis on raw and cooked vegetables, and fruits. In case of constipation, all measures should be adopted for its eradication. The patient should avoid refined carbohydrate foods, such as white sugar; white bread and products made from them, as well as meat find eggs.
your teeth throughout the day, and if you ever notice any plaque buildup, brush your teeth again and rinse thoroughly with water, making sure that you feel your teeth, not plaque buildup, which is a contributing factor in bad breath. Bad breath remedies for children should therefore primarily focus on good dental care and healthy eating habits. In mild cases, treating halitosis at home will be quite simple but if unresponsive halitosis treatment should be sought from your doctor.

Turn the spoon upside down and use it to scrape your tongue, using a back to front motion.
Home remedy for bad breath (Halitosis) ¾¾ Halitosis Treatment using Fenugreek : Among the several home remedies for halitosis, the use of fenugreek has proved most effective.

Mud baths help to improve the complexion, clear spots and patches on the skin following skin disorders or due to smallpox
E
arth was used extensively for remedial purposes in ancient times as well as the middle ages. In modern times, it again came into prominence as a valuable therapeutic agent in the last century through the indefatigable efforts of Emanuel Felke, a German-born Lutheran minister who was nicknamed the “Clay Pastor.” Felke found that the forces of earth have remarkable effects upon the human body, especially during the night. These effects are described as refreshing, invigorating and vitalising. Felke believed that for wounds and skin diseases, application of clay or moistened earth was the only true natural bondage. The body is thus repaired with the element from which it is assumed to be made. Adolf Just ( 1838 - 1936), one of the pioneers of nature cure in modern times, believed that all diseases, but especially the serious nervous troubles of our age, would lose their terrors, if only sleeping or lying on the earth at night became customary in the curing of diseases. According to him, by sleeping on the ground, the entire body is aroused from its lethargy to a new manifestation of vital energy, so that it can now effectively remove old morbid matter and masses of old faces from the intestines, and receive a sensation of new health, new life and new

un thought of vigour and strength. Going barefooted all day long, except when it is very cold, is also regarded as a valuable step towards achieving good health and true happiness. Men can draw vital energy and strength out of the earth through their feet. It is advisable to go entirely barefooted as often as possible, especially on the bare ground but in rooms with painted floors it is better to wear chappals, since the painted floor affects the body adversely if one walks on it with bare soles. The healing power is strong in leaves and herbs, powerful in the air, but very powerful indeed in the earth. There have been a custom to bury sufferers from all kinds of disease in the earth up to their necks, leave them there for some hours, and then remove them. They believe that many of them are cured. Presumably the body draws unto itself the healing minerals and some of the earth’s magnetism.
MUD PACKS
The nature cure practitioners at present are making increasing use of moistened earth in the treatment of diseases. The use of mud packs has been found highly beneficial and effective in the treatment of chronic inflammation caused by internal diseases, bruises, sprains, boils and wounds. This mode of treatment is normally adopted in conjunction with a proper scheme of dietary and other natural therapies. The advantage of mud treatment is that it is able to retain moisture and coolness for longer periods than cold water packs or compresses. The cold moisture in the mud packs relaxes the pores of the skin, draws the blood into the surface, relieves inner congestion and pain, promotes heat radiation and elimination of morbid matter. A mud pack is prepared with clay obtained from about 10cms. below the surface of the earth, after ensuring that it does not contain any impurities such as compost or pebbles. The clay is then made into a smooth paste with warm water. This is allowed to cool and then spread on a strip of cloth, the size of which may vary according to requirements. The dimensions of the pack meant for application on the abdomen are generally 20cms x 10cm x 2.5 cm for adults. Mud packs have been found to be a valuable treatment of diseases relating to general weakness or nervous disorders. It can also bring down fever and is beneficial in the treatment of scarlet fever, measles and influenza. The mud pack is prescribed for swellings, eye and ear troubles, gout, rheumatism, stomach troubles, kidney and liver malfunctions, diphtheria, neuralgia, sexual disorders, headache, toothache and general aches and pains. The mud bandage, after being placed on the body, should be covered with flannel or other protective material. The pack is applied for 10 to 30 minutes. As the abdomen is the seat of most diseases,
JUNE
mud pack applied to this part of the body can cure many disorders including all forms of indigestion affecting the stomach and bowels. It is most effective in decreasing the external heat and breaking up the morbid matter. It also aids the inactivity of labour pains and for this purpose, the pack may be renewed every hour or two. The mud pack is also helpful as an alternate treatment. The area under treatment is first given fomentation for 5 to 10 minutes until it is well heated. Mud is then applied directly to the skin for 5 to 15 minutes, depending upon the reaction required. Hot and cold applications are useful in relieving chronic pains, intestinal cramps and lumbago. Alternate application helps to relieve discomfort caused by flatulence and intestinal obstructions. It is also helpful in amoebiasis, colitis, enteritis and other inflammatory conditions of bacterial origin.
MUD BATH
Mud or clay bath is another mode of treatment. It is applied in the same way as packs, but only on a larger scale on the entire body. In this, mud or clay is first ground and sifted to remove all impurities, and then made into a smooth paste mixed with hot water. The paste is then spread on a sheet which in turn is wrapped round the body. One or two blankets are then wrapped over this, depending on the temperature of the room and that of the pack. A mud bath is followed with a cleansing warm water bath and a short cold shower. The mud bath is found to tone up the skin by increasing the circulation and energising the skin tissues. Frequent mud baths help to improve the complexion, clear spots and patches on the skin following skin disorders or due to smallpox. It is very beneficial in the treatment of skin diseases like psoriasis, leucoderma and every leprosy. This bath is also valuable in getting relief from rheumatic pain or pain in the joints caused by injuries. The duration of the bath should be from 30 minutes to one hour. Care should also be taken to avoid the patient catching a chill during the bath. Mud applications also form a vital part of natural beauty treatment.

Amblyopia ( Lazy Eyes)
Dr. K. Bhujang Shetty Managing director, Narayana Nethralaya 121/C, West of cord road, Rajajinagar R Block, Bangalore 10 Ph: 080- 23373311/66121300
Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision in one or both eyes is reduced due to inadequate use during childhood and the eye becomes lazy
WHAT IS AMBLYOPIA?
Light enters the eye through the pupil and is converted into nerve signals that travel along the optic nerve to reach the brain. The brain and the eye then work in co-ordination to produce vision. Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision in one or both eyes is reduced due to inadequate use during childhood and the eye becomes lazy. The eye on testing shows no abnormality and looks normal. However it is not functioning normally and hence the brain favours the other eye. It should not be confused with the squint, which is an improper alignment of two eyes.
ªª
ªª
HOW COMMON IS AMBLYOPIA?
Amblyopia is the most common cause of poor vision in childhood and monocular ( one eye) impairment among all age groups. This condition affects approximately 2 to 3 out of every 100 children. Unless it is successfully treated in early childhood, amblyopia usually persists into adulthood, which would be irreversible then. \
WHAT CAUSES AMBLYOPIA?
Amblyopia may be caused by any condition that affects normal visual development or use of the both eyes within few months of birth. The causes for amblyopia are as follows: ªª Squint ( Crossed eyes): Squint is an in balance in the position of the two eyes that they may
AYURPHARMA
cross in (estropia), or turn out (exptropia) or turn down( hypotropia) The misaligned eye then “ shuts off1 and fails to develop the normal vision as the child uses only the better eye. Refractive errors (spectacle power): These are eye conditions in which one or both eyes are unable to Focus, as it may be nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic. Most people have one or more of them. Refractive errors can usuallly be corrected with eye glasses or contact lens. Any other factor that blocks the entry of light into the eye like cataract, corneal scar drooping of eye lid. This prevents formation of a clear image inside the eye and hence development of amblyopia.
HOW IS AMBLYOPIADIAGNOSED?
Diagnosing amblyopia is not easy at all. A child will never complain of poor vision. Unless there is an obvious cause like cataract or misalignment between the 2 eyes, it is difficult to detect amblyopia. Hence it becomes imperative that each child should undergo an eye examination by a pediatric opthalmologist at an age of 1-year at least if not earlier and preferably not later than 4 years. However, they need to come earlier if there is a family history of misalignment between the eyes, childhood cataract, refractive error or any other serious eye problem. An opthalmologist defects amblyopia by finding a difference in vision between the 2 eyes. This is

tested by various tests that are done on each eye after occluding the other eye. If after closing one eye, the child cries or tries to pull out, it may imply poor vision.
WHY TO TREAT AMBLYOPIA?
If it is not treated in time, it may result in permanent poor vision in that eye and loss of three dimensional (depth) perception.
HOW IS AMBLYOPIA TREATED IN CHILDREN? Treating amblyopia involves making the child use the lazy or weaker eye along with treating the cause of the amblyopia. Currently there are two ways used to do this: ªª Atropine: A drop of this drug is piaced in the stronger eye once a day to temporarily blur the vision. ªª Patching: An opaque adhesive patch is worn over the stronger eye for few hours every day, depending on the age and intensity, for weeks to months.
Try to change the material, shape and size of the patch. ªª How long does the treatment last? It takes few weeks to months for the vision to improve and few require maintenance patch up to 8 to 10 years of age. Both these methods force the child to use the eye with amblyopia. It helps stimulate vision in the weaker eye and indirectly improves the connections to the brain to develop vision more completely. One thing also needs mention is that once the vision is restored in the weaker eye treatment needs to be continued on a maintenance therapy to prevent reverting to poorer vision. This treatment needs to be given only after having treated the primary cause like removal of cataract, prescription of glasses. In case of a squint, the treatment would start before surgery and continue thereafter. ªª What is ideal time to treat? During the first six to nine years of life the visual system develops rapidly and matures and after about 10 years the visual system matures. So the earlier the treatment the better it is and ideal time would be less than 5 years. Also, previously, eye care professionals often thought that treating amblyopia in older children would be of little benefit, but results from an Amblyopia Treatment study showed that age alone should not be used as a factor to decide whether or not to treat a child for amblyopia as many children aged seven through 17 with amblyopia also benefitted from treatment that are more commonly used on younger children. However, the extent of success will depend on how severe the amblyopia is how old the child is and the treatment compliance and will differ with each child. ªª Can amblyopia be treated in adults? Studies in adults are very limited at this time and scientists are still exploring whether treatment can improve vision. ¾¾ Notes: Though the child is able to see well with single good eye, poor vision in the other eye can be a disqualification in professions which require perfect vision in both eyes like Air force, Navy, Pilots. ou’ve just found out you’re pregnant, and naturally you want to give your baby the healthiest start possible. Reading the newest research on the benefits of organic foods and the dangers of toxic chemicals is a great place to start, but who has time to keep up with the ever-changing news? The good news is that you don’t have to. Ayurveda, which has been around for three thousand years, is an Indian tradition that honors the relationship between what goes into the mother’s body during pregnancy and the effect it has on the child. The emphasis is on naturally healthy eating. ªª The emphasis is on naturally healthy eating and living - and with the renewed interest in green living it’s easier than ever for you and your family to integrate Ayurvedic principles into your busy lives. According to Ayurveda, everything you taste, see, feel, hear, and smell during pregnancy should be nourishing and pleasant. Your diet, of course, is at the core since ultimately the goal is to nourish your baby during pregnancy while building up the reserves your body will need to make breast milk. ªª An Ayurvedic diet largely consists of easily digested foods, such as milk, rice, ghee (clarified butter), grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

According to Ayurveda, food should have all six tastes - sweet, sour, salty, butter, pungent, and astringent - so that you have a full and pleasant meal. Ayurvedic principles promote a holistic approach to eating, and can easily be applied to an organic lifestyle, which emphasizes foods that are free of chemicals and artificial enhancements. The main benefit of organically grown food, such as fruits and vegetables, is that it helps you avoid ingesting residue from pesticides, which can often linger even after the food is washed. A research and advocacy group called the Environmental Working Group published the “Dirty Dozen” list of fruits and vegetables that should always be bought organic since the conventionally grown ones tend to be laden with pesticides. Organically grown fruits and vegetables may also contain more Vitamins and minerals than those grown through modern farming practices, and may offer more disease – fighting nutrients to mom and baby, preventing health concerns ranging from heart disease to cancer. An ayurvedic and organic life style encourages families to try to avoid meat and dairy product that contain harmones and antibiotics. In case of antibiotics, during pregnancy the amount that gets to your baby is small. However, everything a mother ingests does cross the placenta and although the amount is small its best to avoid items that can affect a developing fetus. The biggest problem with antibiotics is that the overuse of them in animals and humans is creating the potential for a public health issue. The more antibiotics are used, the more likely bacteria will develop resistant strains to the drugs, making it increasingly difficult to treat infections.

ANTENATAL CARE ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
Pregnancy is not a merely physiological process. It is a great responsibility given by nature to us. Both the father and mother should be aware of this responsibility and hence they should be prepared, physically and psychologically, to carry it. But, still, as a mother has to carry the baby in her womb, nourish it, and most importantly, give birth to the baby, more responsibility rests upon her shoulders ªª Antenatal care means the care to be taken during pregnancy each month. In Ayurveda, it is called as Masanumasiki chikitsa. The word masanumasiki means month to month regimen. According to Ayurveda, there is

different medical treatment for each month of pregnancy. Thus there 9 different groups of medicines i.e. herbs for each month of pregnancy. If there are vitiated doshas, these should be purified with the help of panchakarmas. Then only, the couple is suitable for conception, this purification is called pindshuddhi. After conception, oral medication is started according to the month of pregnancy. As per Ayurvedic concepts, in each month a separate dahtu (body building substance) is formed in the body of baby. To help this dhatu to grow in normal way, medication is started. E.g. in the fifth month of pregnancy, the intellect of the baby begins to develop. In sixth month, it gets sharper. So, specific medicines which act on the intellect are given to the mother in fifth and sixth month. Medicinal treatment is not the only thing which is stressed upon in Ayurveda. Apart from treating the course of normal pregnancy, different illnesses which may occur can also be treated with Ayurveda,. Hypertension (high blood pressure) in pregnancy which is very common now a days, hyperacidity, excessive vomiting, diabetes in pregnancy, edema, premature birth, intrauterine growth retardation are some of the problems in pregnancy which can be treated with the help of Ayurveda. Regarding diet, pregnant lady not very hot, spicy, sour, or which does not vitiate the doshas), like milk, ghee, rice, wheat, and fresh and homemade food. Furthermore, diet should be planned according to individual prakruti (constitution). One may wonder if panchakarma could be done during pregnancy. The answer is yes, and, there are some panchakarmas like basti that are mandatory. External therapies could be done

to treat some illnesses during the pregnancy. As mentioned above, body of the mother should be cleansed even before conception. When the baby is growing in the womb, it is exposed to emotional and physiological changes of mother and her surroundings. In Ayurveda, the importance of proper behavior of the couple before and after conception is emphasized. The couple should stop consumption of alcohol, tobacco, or other harmful substances. The couple should have affection and respect for each other. Garbhasanskar is done in order to make atmosphere blissful. Part of this is done with listening to different ragas in classical Indian music and some mantras for baby development. There is another major problem many women of today’s world are forced to face. This is the problem of depression, which can occur during pregnancy arid also after delivery. Depression, if neglected during pregnancy can lead to serious trouble during postpartum period. Parent counselling is very much necessary to avoid this. According to ayurveda, this is due to the imbalance of vatadosha, The vata dosha should be treated carefully during pregnancy. Yoga, meditation, listening to calming music, mantra chanting, and pacifying herbs, and external therapies are the different means which help to control depression. The medicines, i.e., the herbs which are used to treat depression act on vitiated vata dosha. These herbs pacify the mind, give strength to mind, and help the brain to think rationally. This is just an outline of antenatal care. This is a vast subject and every point can be elaborated to great lengths

T
he legendary history of Tea dates back to 2737 BC and attributes its discovery to the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. Once he noticed the leaves from a branch of firewood falling into the boiling water and imparted a sweet aroma to it. Thus the first cup of tea was born. Tea was first mentioned in a Chinese dictionary in 350 BC and the first treatise on tea was published by Luyu in 780 AD. Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring boiling hot water over the tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). Also said as an infusion of the leaves of Camellia sinensis plant and is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, after water. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavour which many people enjoy. Each tea plant is on an average 80 to 100 yrs old and is a variation of bonsai, as it is trimmed and cut constantly. Tea includes biologically active chemicals such as flavonoids, caffeine, and fluoride. Though all teas are derived from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, but different processing methods produce different types of tea. Fresh tea leaves are rich in flavonoids known as catechins. Tea

VARIETIES OF TEA ªª White Tea: White tea is the rarest and least

processed tea variety. It is steamed and dried and does not go through the withering or fermentation process. This rare and very expensive tea is picked as dawn breaks in four northeastern Chinese provinces. White tea is made from buds and young leaves, which are steamed or fired to inactivate polyphenol oxidase and then dried. Thus due to minimal oxidation, white tea retains the high concentrations of catechins present in fresh tea leaves. As the buds are covered with fine silvery hairs, they impart a whitish/gray color to the liquid, hence the name ‘white tea’. It is sometimes called silvertip pekoe or white needle. When you brew white tea it is a pale yellow straw color with a slightly sweet flavor. Black Tea: Black tea is currently the most popular in US, enjoyed mainly as iced tea. The fame of black tea is mainly due to the invention of the tea bag in 1904 by NYC tea merchant Thomas Sullivan. Recent studies have shown that black tea provides equal health benefits as its green cousin. Black tea requires the most processing of the three main varieties. Traditionally, the fermentation process begins by placing the leaves on drying or withering shelves to remove the excess moisture. When they reach the desired stage they are then rolled in special machines. Once the leaves are rolled, they are moved to another room where the temperature and humidity is carefully controlled and they are left to ferment. Then the leaves are heated and fermented or oxidized. Some processors use machines to chop the leaves into small pieces before the drying stage in order to speed up the process. It is this stage that produces the distinctively rich flavor and amber colored brew. Tea leaves destined to become black are fully rolled or broken to maximize the interaction between catechins and polyphenol oxidase. Because they are allowed to oxidize completely before drying, most black teas are rich in the flavins and the arubigins, but relatively low in monomeric catechins, such as EGCG. Green Tea: Green tea is made from more matured tea leaves than white tea, and tea leaves may be withered prior to steaming or firing. Green tea is withered and rolled but not fermented during processing. Thus the original color of the leaves is retained. Although they are also rich in catechins, green teas may have catechin profiles different from white teas, with slightly higher levels of oxidation products. The result is a fresh tasting tea that produces a pale green-yellow liquid that has a grassy flavor. All Japanese teas are green with names like gyokuro or sencha. Chinese teas include jasmine and the most famous and expensive

green tea known as Dragon Well tea, grown in the hillsides of Hanghou. Oolong Tea: Oolong tea lies somewhere in the middle between green and black tea. It is fermented like black tea, but the process is stopped part way through. The crucial stage in the process is to stop the fermentation process at exactly the right time, and the best time to stop the fermentation is when the leaves are 30% red and 70% green. They are then ‘rubbed’ repeatedly to release the enzymes and juices necessary to produce good flavor, aroma and texture. The next step is to heat the leaves. This method produces a unique balance between green tea’s delicacy and black tea’s depth. Formosa oolong from Taiwan is considered one of the finest oolong teas. Herbal Tea: Herbal tea, tisane, or ptisan usually refers to infusions of fruit or herbs made without the tea plant, such as rosehip tea or chamomile tea. The English word “tisane” originates from the Greek word (ptisanē), a drink made from pearl barley. The Chinese term liang cha, means cooling tea. Herbal teas can be made with fresh or dried flowers, leaves, seeds or roots, generally by pouring boiling water over the plant parts and letting them steep for a few minutes. Seeds and roots can also be boiled on a stove. The tisane is then strained, sweetened if so desired, and served. Many companies produce herbal tea bags for such infusions. Herbal teas are often consumed for their physical or medicinal effects, especially for their stimulant, relaxant or sedative properties. Ayurvedic tea is made of Ayurvedic herbs like Agya Ghas, Yeshtimadhu, Tulasi etc. Various pharmacies have come up with their products using different combinations of Ayurvedic Medicines such as Shantikunj pharmacy, Green Earth Products, Gokul herbal tea etc. These products also contain medicinal effects and rich aroma based on the ingredients. Ayurvedic tea has also been found to be especially rich in several nutrient elements such as Ca, K, V, Fe, Mn, Se and Zn.

EFFECTS OF TEA ON HEALTH ªªIn a study of Kazuaki et al, oolong tea showed
amount and catechins, a type of antioxidant. Catechins are highest in concentration in white and green teas, while black tea has substantially fewer due to its oxidative preparation. Research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has suggested that levels of antioxidants in green and black tea do not differ greatly, as green tea has an oxygen radical absorbance capacity. Tea also contains L-theanine, the stimulant caffeine and small amounts of theobromine and theophylline. ªª Flavonoids: Flavanols are the most abundant class of flavonoids in all types of tea. Flavanol monomers are also known as catechins. The principal catechins found in white and green tea’s are epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). In oolong and black teas, the aflavins and the arubigins are more abundant. Tea is also a good source of another class of flavonoids called flavonols. Flavonols found in tea include kaempferol, quercetin, and myricitin. Unlike flavanols, flavonols are usually present in tea as glycosides. ªª Caffeine: Though all the varieties of tea contain caffeine, the caffeine content varies considerably and is influenced by factors like brewing time, the amount of tea and water used for brewing, and whether the tea is loose or in teabags. In general, a mug of tea contains about half as much caffeine as a mug of coffee. There is little information on the caffeine content of white teas, since they are often grouped together with green teas. Buds and young tea leaves have been found to contain higher levels of caffeine than older leaves, suggesting that the caffeine content of some white teas may be slightly higher than that of green teas. ªª Fluoride: Tea plants accumulate fluoride in their leaves. In general, the oldest tea leaves contain the most fluoride. Most high quality teas are made from the bud or the first two to four leaves i.e the youngest leaves of the plant. Brick tea, a lower quality tea, is made from the oldest tea leaves and is often very high in fluoride. Symptoms of excess fluoride (i.e., dental and skeletal fluorosis) have been observed in Tibetan children and adults who

its efficacy in lowering plasma glucose in type 2 diabetic patients. ªªA study showed sufficient evidence in risk reduction for CHD at intakes of 3 cups per day and for improved antioxidant status at intakes of one to six cups per day. Black tea generally had a positive effect on health. (Cornwall Ave et al) ªªThe American Society for Nutritional Sciences has conducted the studies on green tea and showed to have anti-obesity effects. (Wolfram S et al) ªª According to a study of Jian-Min Yuan et al on Tea and cancer prevention: Epidemiological studies High intake of green tea was consistently associated with reduced risk of upper gastrointestinal tract cancers after sufficient control for confounders and limited data supported a protective effect of green tea on lung and hepato-cellular carcinogenesis. ªª Tea is said to improve the blood circulation ªª Consumption of green tea is associated with a lower risk of diseases that cause functional disability, such as “stroke, cognitive impairment and osteoporosis” in the elderly. (Tomata Y et al)
CONCLUSIONS
At last there arises a question, whether the tea is healthy or not? From the above research studies, we have seen that the tea is beneficial in the management of many health disorders. Intake of tea and its health benefits can be achieved only by selecting the right variety of tea and by consuming it in the proper method and quantity. Also remember, that the excessive consumption of tea leads to the adverse effects on health. THEREFORE, OPT THE RIGHT TEA FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Address Obesity with an Ayurvedic approach

omu a typical 16 yr. old living in Abudabi like the most recent teen agers , enjoys watching movies action packed , adores rock music , loves to play video games on the computer and like 20%of all children globally is overweight. Doctors class him in the obesity slot and his less polite peer group have nick named him as “The fat man”. Somu’s Parents are really concerned about their only child because he looks so huze for his age, with alarmingly high BP reading -190/100mmhg and fasting blood sugar levels racing towards a pre diabetic state. With over control of emotions and indirect expression of hostility Somu looks depressed, self-conscious, pessimistic .less assertive and with decreased self- esteem. Worldwide 5%of the population considered obese and 14% over weight share the platform with Somu. This is a matter of real concern because 100 million dollars is spent every year on obesity related diseases. Obesity is a leading cause of preventable death next to smoking. The bitter truth is that some developing countries are struggling to reduce hunger and simultaneously some are battling a rise in obesity, with a result that many people are eating a larger quantity of cheap food to help them feel full, missing on important minerals and vitamins necessary for leading a healthy life. Health problems associated with obesity include Diabetes, eating disorders, orthopaedic disorders, liver problems including fatty liver, respiratory disorders, sleep apnoea- a period of time during which breathing stops or is markedly reduced ,cardiomyopathy – a problem with the heart muscle when extra effort is needed to pump blood.
Being fit is a way of saying persons eats well, gets a lot of physical activity, and has a healthy weight. If you feel you do not fall in this slot read this article to find out how you can design a healthy eating and exercise program to get all the benefits of being fit.

one organ of the body is in-capable of performing its function, another attempts to effect the same purpose in a different way .In the case described, where the intestinal glands fail to perform their function, the other organs also officiate for them, and we have respective expression of dysfunctions like eg deposits in the urine a function exhibited by the disturbed kidney. Although these symptoms may be present individually in other states of the digestive organs, we never have them all except in Indigestion quantity; there is excessive hunger and thirst. do not grow to the extent fat grows .This effects longevity the bodily movement is impaired , due to the looseness , tenderness and the heaviness of the fat .

What happens once a person becomes obese?
Once a person becomes obese his metabolism becomes weak because of which what he eats will nourish only fat tissue depriving other tissues like blood tissue, muscle tissue, bone tissue, bone marrow tissue and reproductive system. As other tissues are emaciated the life span decreases and the activity of the person also becomes restricted. Protruding abdomen is a local condition which shows up and comes under consideration as the most troublesome and disfiguring accompaniment of corpulence or fatness, and as one of the symptoms of many grave forms of disease. This local enlargement is of such frequent occurrence, both in the male and female, which it merits more attention because of unhealthy cast of face and a constant oppression by something vaguely described as “weight at the stomach” .With inordinate thirst and lack of appetite there is Dyspepsia from fluids, a very common complaint and a prolific cause of pot-belly. This form of Dyspepsia, or difficult digestion, arises from imperfect conversion of the food, the gastric juice being rendered by dilution unfit to perform its function, the food gets only partially disintegrated, putrefaction and evolution of gas is the result, the patient feels “ blown out,” and is forced to unbutton to give room for the expanded stomach and intestines. The partly digested food is now presented to the glands of the intestines, but in an abnormally moist condition. It fails to stimulate them to efficient action, and imperfect secretion of their juices is the result. Now we know that every secretion is also an excretion from the blood, and that upon the proper performance of these functions depends on the health of that fluid. It is obvious that in the case of Indigestion under consideration the entire mass of the circulating fluid becomes contaminated, and with poisoned or contaminated blood the entire economy is impaired. It is one of the most beautiful evidences of divine design in the construction of the body, that when one organ gets out of order and is unable to perform its function or functions, one or more differently functioned organs take on the action of that which is impaired, and although of course being differently constructed these are not able to perform the work in exactly the same manner, they do so with a close attempt at producing the same result. In other words, when

There are many factors to determine our ideal weight. Several factors are considered – age , muscle fat ratio, height , sex , and bone density. a) Body mass index is one of the ways to decide to find out whether our body weight is ideal. BMI- Body mass index is your weight in relationship to your height. =Your weight in kilograms divided by square of your height in meters. Eg wt80kgs , Height 1.8meters 1.8 meters square =3.24 80 divided by 3.24 =BMI 24.69 Or Your weight in pounds divided by square of your height in inches . Weight190lbs , height 6ft(72”) 72 square= 5184. 190 × 703 divided by 5184 BMI= 25.76 BMI≤18.5=under weight. BMI 18.5-25 =ideal. BMI 25 -30 =over weight. BMI over 30 = obese. b) Waist hip ratio WHR. Ratio of circumference of your waist to that of hips. You measure the smallest circumference of your waist usually just above your belly button. Divide this measurement by circumference of your hip at its widest part. If your waist is 28” and hips measure 36 “your WHR is 28÷36 =0.77. Ayurvedic principles advocate the use of heavy and non-nourishing diet .In order that the over obese persons are brought to normal health heavy but non nourishing diet like honey is given . By virtue of their heaviness such diets would minimise the force of aggravated power of digestion and due to their non-nourishing nature they would help to reduce fat . How to design a fitness program:
This being the age of Technology at the peak doctors are busy getting trained and learning surgical techniques in correction of obesity a problem which could be prevented and addressed simply by eating right and engaging in regular physical activity .More disturbing fact are the medical schools which offer only few hrs. in the curriculum teaching healthy diet ,nutrition and exercise whereas weeks are devoted to explain the drugs available to treat hypertension , diabetes and panorama of diseases which come along with obesity .Root of the problem lies that doctors like to succeed in their treatments and gain more satisfaction in surgical procedures, or prescribing pills that quickly arrest a medical condition
Choose variety of exercises:
Benefits of physical activity: people who have regular activity have a healthy weight, they have a improved posture with a natural boost of selfesteem and confidence ,they are better sleepers, their concentration levels are higher and are able to handle stress depression and anxiety. We class these types of people as cardiovascular fit and these people have reduced blood cholesterol levels. Chalk out your likes and dislikes and choose an activity you will enjoy. Think of variety and a logical progression of activity. .Start slowly and build up gradually. Walking , bicycling , rowing or dancing are some options , Listen to your body and do not push yourself very hard, Be flexible and give ample time to the body if you are not comfortable. Monitoring progress is very important. Initial weight loss is encouraging but latter consistent effort ,increasing the amount of time you exercise in order to continue improving .Some times we can lose motivation so instead of letting it go set new goals or try a new activity. Your mission should be to design a healthy eating proggrame, design an exercise program, monitor your progress, and write a reflection regarding your progress. Remember being fit is a way of saying a persons eats well, gets a lot of physical activity, exercise and has a healthy weight. If you are fit your body works well you feel good and you can do all the things you want to do like moving about with younger children.

special action to mobilise fat.Take the help of your physician to do this. Mindless eating – distracted kind of eating where people focus on somethi ng else other than their plate and as a result don’t notice when their bellies get full. Our modern diet usually lacks fiber, as most of it is removed from the cereals including floor bu hulling, refining and peeling of fruit and vegetable before consumiong them. Isabgol – Psyllium husk – Plantago ovata called isadgola ion Sanskrit is a natural agent to provide sufficient dietary fiber to the fiber deficient food, and in addition it does not contain any additives or preservatives .Whenever you eat a lot of sweets this type of fiber helps the body balance its response to sweets. Though fruits are sweet there is fiber in the fruit which does not permit their sugars to be absorbed quickly. This is a protection against exaggerated blood sugar levels. Energy giving foods like grains increases sadaka pitta (seratonin) a chemical which makes you feel relaxed and mellow .A high protein diet –food facilitating the biological function may make you loose weight faster .But to make the experience of weight loss more enjoyable and in a relaxed manner you need to add a reasonable amount of carbohydrate food to your diet regime. Remember fat requires carbohydrate to burn .So taking a carbohrate free diet and living only on vegetable and proteins makes your weight loss proggrame more difficult and uncertain Judious use of grains is what plays an important role here. The hot drying grains like buck wheat, and millet followed by barley rice, corn. Roasting or dry cooked grains are better options. Its better to avoid bread but incase you take it take toasted one. Reducing food quantity at each meal gradually and you will see the capacity of food intake gradually lessens. Say no to all cold foods and drinks. This includes all refrigerated item s. Our body fat holds the portfolio of insulating the body and increases naturally in cold climates .Continuous exposure to cold food, drink, or being in an air conditioned atmosphere alerts the body that it should add extra insulation so up goes the fat set point. Exercises at this point helps build up heat in the body and thus reduces the need of insulation. Reduce your overall water intake as you reduce salt in your diet. .Drink when you are thirsty. Warm water or hot, herbal concoctions, honey lemon in Luke warm water with a pinch of pepper powder, help fat melt away. Ayurvedic supplements reduce your fat set point. These preparations mobilize fat from deposits and eliminate it through srotasas , These are not appetite suppressants but encourage metabolism and help to dissipate excess fat swiftly . All veggies are good but restrict the intake of very sour or very juicy vegetables. Cucumber has a little of bitter and and astringent principle so it can be taken in moderation. Leafy vegetables and green should be preffered more than the root vegetables. Steamed and stir fried cooking option with use of pepper, chilies’, cayenne or other hot pungent spices. Over eating legumes just like meat is not an option for obesity because their bodies so not require large quantity of meat/proteins. But legumes are better than meat because of lack of animal fat in legumes. Avoid heavy legumes like black lentils soya beans , and black beans best are mung beans , red lentils , Obese people do not need the heavy oily energy of nuts and seeds and better to avoid them. They may eat sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds on aocassions . Oily foods are best avoided. Use almond oil, corn oil sun flower oil or safflower oil for seasoning. How about dairy products: Heavy and sticky qualities of diary products mimic the qualities of kapha .So better to avoid large quantities. Goats milk is preffered as it gives extra benefits in dyspnoea . Yogurt should be avpided Addition to spices to a version of yogurt diluted and churned breaks and makes it less slimy and viscid. The resulting drink boosts the metabolism and helps reduce wt. Use honey –old one and a raw one instead of sugar , Spices usually help to wake up use all spices except salt. Ginger and garlic are the best. Cleanses your key elimination centers like bowel liver blood.

Even an angry person becomes angry with himself after regaining senses, repenting about why he bursted out in anger. According to a Chinese proverb, the fire (anger) you kindle for your enemy will burn your own self. Initially, anger is not dangerous, but don’t forget it is one letter short of danger. However, an outburst of anger is better than building up anger inside. What causes anger? In reality it is our own thought process, behaviour and action which governs our anger irrespective of the nature of the event. Rebecca R. that too immediately at the place where it occurs and to the immediate cause is one of the healthiest ways to relieve anger. Be conscious of your weakness: Keep your mind consciously alert that you have an angry nature, there may be an outburst any time. Don’t let it happen otherwise you will lose control & go crazy. Add more laughter into your life: Whenever you get a scope be humorous, crack jokes, watch comedy programmes & films or TV, go to a theatre to watch funny movies. In this manner make your life more cheerful and pleasant. Silence is helpful: Complete silence is beneficial. An angry state of mind is temporary. It has a time limit, after that you will definitely cool down & come back to the normal state of mind. However don’t waste this opportunity by pondering further about the person or thing that caused the anger. Control at the budding stage: The best way to control anger is at the budding stage, when the anger slowly deepens into the mind, it often goes out of hand. A man of complete control does not allow these things to grow further. Leave the place of anger: Go away from the situation & from the person you are angry with and have a walk if possible in fresh air or in a quiet place. Distract your mind. Frustration & depression-the killer: Mind that frustration, depression & deprivation for a considerable period of time may result into a sudden burst of anger on anybody or under any situation. Goals must be reachable: Obstructed desire turns into anger. So always plan your goals which are achievable reachable by considering your standard & capability. Dreaming of any impossible goal may make you hopeless & frustrated, resulting in anger Change your philosophy of anger: As per Albert Ellis Ph.D, you create your own philosophy of anger by consciously & unconsciously subscribing to absolutistic command-oriented thinking & by changing the thoughts, feelings & behaviour which underlie and accompany your rage, you can greatly reduce that rage. Don’t go on impulse: It is you who will have to assess each situation to decide whether an occurrence is frustrating, humiliating, annoying & unfair. Cultivate lasting skills to manage your behaviour, not on impulsive mood rather on rational basis. Achieve a more balanced perspective: When you feel that anger has just started, use cold hard logic to deal with it since logic, if appropriately entered into the mind, has the power to defeat anger. Draw a limit to your desires: In this money minded society, people’s greed for acquiring more and more materialistic things are increasing. Once you limit your desires, definitely you get peace in life and control your anger as well. Make an organized effort: Organize your life - style in such a manner so as to include sufficient time for rest relaxation sound sleep and

reasonably good time for eating to avoid unnecessary hurrying. Practice mental time – out: Sometimes you feel like lashing out verbally and physically under certain situations but if you allow it to happen it means your temper controls you at that time. Be creative and practice mental time-out even if it is not possible for you to leave the place. Be ready for change: As per Rebecca R. Luhn you can learn to manage your anger if you: XX Believe that anger must change XX Practice techniques of change XX Learn to relax XX Condition yourself for new behaviour XX Think about your outcome Avoid excessive talking: When one person talks too much or is of an argumentative nature he runs the risk of having a provocation for anger. Be conscious of your weakness: Keep your mind consciously alert that you have an angry nature, there may be an outburst any time. Don’t let it happen otherwise you will lose control and go crazy. Accept your angry nature and try to change it. Work out self-developed style: Develop your own strategy to tackle the situation depending upon the kind of provocations. Improve patience tolerance and forgiveness Keep your dignity: Remember that the test of a wise well educated and cultured person is that he does not easily lose his temper or become angry. Allow some space between anger and reaction: Anger is a violent emotion. Never answer a letter or enter into an argument while you are angry. Always think that it is controllable: If you think that anger is a normal phenomenon it cannot be controlled, then you yourself make the task impossible. Always think that it can be controlled easily, nothing is impossible.
The bottom-line is: ªª ‘Change your anger pattern, change your life’. Gain control of what you say, do and think. Transform your thought pattern into healthy and constructive one. Learn to convert anger into positive energy. Lead a happy, peaceful and satisfied life.

Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 50 to 60 % of cases of Dementia, is a form of progressive mental deterioration because of the generalized degeneration of the brain. The most common symptom of Dementia is Memory Loss, which is not the same as ordinary forgetfulness. While anyone might forget the name of the movie he / she saw last night, a person with dementia may not remember whether he / she saw the movie at all. Other symptoms of Dementia include difficulty in performing familiar tasks like eating, bathing, and sleeping, problems with language, disorientation, impaired judgment and mood swings. Eventually those affected are unable to take care of themselves and desperately need help in all aspects of daily living. There is very little information on Dementia and its symptoms. Many are fully aware of the disease and it effect on the person and the family. So, in most cases, even family members may not even recognize it as a problem that needs special care.

Dementia is still surrounded by myths and stigma. In India and many parts of the world it is still considered as normal part of ageing. Currently there is no prevention or cure. Sympathetic care alone can help. Caregivers, who are mostly family members, are overstressed and have none to share their apprehensions with. The lack of information and the dearth of appropriate support systems, make it a challenging task for-the care giving family members to look after their affected dear ones and themselves. In developed countries, Dementia is well understood and appropriate care systems are available. But India lags behind. Dementia care is yet to be recognized as a health care priority by the Government.

Bangalore is famous as a tech hub, and is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. But we are paying for this growth at a terrible human cost. Thirty-four in one lakh people commit suicide in our city. This is an alarmingly high rate. Bangalore has been recording the highest number of suicides in India for several years. Those in the age group of 15-29 years are the most vulnerable, and a slightly higher number of men kill themselves, as compared to women. Suicides are now recognised as a public health and social problem in every country, including India. As a majority of suicides take place among the young, societies lose talent and productivity. The impact of a suicide is experienced by family, friends and acquaintances. Children in the family are emotionally shaken, and the suicide of a dear one impacts their growth, marriage, and employment prospects. The stigma forces families to change their homes, jobs, and schools. With suicide, the problem, pain, suffering and trauma is merely transferred to those who survive. ¾¾ Round-the clock help With 40 years’ experience in helping the distressed, Spandana Hospital has now opened a 24hour suicide helpline.
