DON’T IGNORE THESE 10 SYMPTOMS OF PAIN People often ignore the general symptoms of pain, thinking that the ache doesn’t merit a trip to the doctor, however, a new study has outlined some signs that should never be ignored or they can prove fatal. Health The Mayo Clinic has brought to light 10 generally ignored symptoms which should be reported to the doctor immediately to avoid any kind of complication. ªª Trouble seeing, speaking or moving: Numbness or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking and blurred or decreased vision are classic signs of a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA),a mini stroke that sometimes lasts only minutes. More atypical symptoms are fainting, shortness of breath or sudden feelings of facial pain, tiredness or a racing heart. In case of any stroke symptoms, immediate emergency medical care is required, as immediate treatment for stroke can cut the danger of brain damage or any other complications: ªª A sudden excruciating headache: A headache that comes with great amount of force, with severe, excruciating pain could be caused by an ‘aneurysm’, bleeding in the brain, stroke, blood vessel inflammation, meningitis or a brain tumour. All require immediate medical attention. In case of a headache that follows a head injury or is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, rash, confusion, seizure, double vision, weakness, numbness or speaking immediate medical attention is required. , ªª Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight without trying should not be ignored. A doctor’s appointment is warranted for a loss of five per cent of body weight in one month, or more than 10 per cent in six to 12 months. Underlying medical conditions could be an overactive thyroid, liver disease, depression or even some cancers. ªª Any breast change: A doctor should be consulted about a lump, nipple discharge or distortion, itching or skin changes, persistent breast pain or a change in breast size or shape. ªª Vaginal bleeding after menopause: Vaginal spotting or bleeding after

Dr. Chalapathy Professor of General Surgery Vydehi Hospital Whitefield, Bangalore – 66 Ph: 080-28413381/2/3/4 menopause may be caused by changes in vaginal tissue, which can become thinner and more fragile as estrogen levels decrease. In some cases however, postmenopausal bleeding can be a symptom of gynaecological cancer. A medical valuation is important. Change In bowel habits: Mild diarrhoea that lasts more than a week, constipation that lasts more than two weeks, or unexplained, sudden urges to have a bowel movement is the time when immediate medical help should be taken. Also on the list are bloody diarrhoea or stools that are black or tar coloured. These symptoms could result from infection, medication side effects, a digestive disorder or colon cancer. Feeling full after eating less: Feeling fuller than normal after eating less that usual could warn of gastrointestinal problems, ranging from indigestion caused by acid reflux to some cancers. If this feeling lasts for weeks, a physician should be consulted, especially if other symptoms are present such as nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain or bloating, fever and chills or weight changes. Persistent cough: A cough for more than is a month, that is affecting sleep or brings up blood or sputum, is cause for an immediate health check. A chronic cough could be caused by asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a respiratory tract infection, chronic bronchitis or even lung cancer. Sad or depressed mood: Feeling sad for weeks or months is a symptom of depression, a medical illness that’s definitely treatable. Other signs might include a loss of interest in normal activities, feeling hopeless, crying easily, trouble concentrating, unintentional weight loss and thoughts of wanting to die. Continual high fever: A doctor should be consulted when a low-grade fever persists (or more than a week. Fever can indicate a urinary tract infection or more serious illnesses such as immune disorders or cancer. A sudden high fever, greater than 103° F, requires immediate valuation.

MIGRAINE It is the time to fight back
¾¾
What is Migraine? Migraine is one of the most common painful conditions of the mankind. It results in an intense and disabling episodic headache characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head. Headache usually persists for many hours and is often accompanied by nausea hypersensitivity to light and sound. Prevalence of migraine is more common in 2545 age group. ¾¾ What are early warning signals of Migraine attack? The early warning signs of a migraine attack are - Altered mood, Irritability, Depression or euphoria, Fatigue, Excessive sleepiness, Craving for certainfood (e.g. chocolate), Confusion or difficulty in concentrating ¾¾ What factors trigger a Migraine? Some of the most common triggering factors are listed below: ªª Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. Migraine may increase before, during or after menses and often disappear after the third month of pregnancy. ªª Foods: Skipping meals or fasting in addition to certain foods like alcohol, cheese, chocolate, fermented or marinated foods, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, canned and processed food etc. can trigger migraine. ªª Stress: A period of hard work or stress at work or home followed by relaxation may lead to a weekend migraine. ªª Sensory stimulus ; Bright lights, sun glare, unusual smells of perfume, flowers and paint thinner, irritating noise etc. can also trigger migraine. ªª Physical factors: Change in sleep patterns (excessive sleep or lack ofsleep) intense physical exertion including sexual activity may increase migraine. ªª Change in the environment: A change of weather, season, altitude level, air, pollution etc. can trigger migraine. ªª Medication: Certain medications like

contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy may worsen migraine. Life style modification to fight Migraine Good-eating habits both high in fiber (apples, banana, grapes, oranges, pears, baked potato, broccoli, carrot, cabbage etc.) and sweet can prove beneficial in migraine. Focus your eating plan on fruits and whole gram, cereal foods and plenty of water. Coffee, strong red wine and chocolate are classic migraine triggers. Try avoiding a gap of more than three or four hours between your snacks or meals. Aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week will help reduce frequency or severity of migraine. Try to get regular amount of sleep each night. Focus on deep breathing number of times throughout the day. Avoid having too many foods high in Lactose (butter milk, cheese spreads and cheese foods, cream, evaporated and condensed milk, hot chocolate mixes, ice cream). Artificial soft drinks can trigger migraine in women particularly who are sensitive to it. So avoid consuming it as far as possible. Early intervention may help prevent the migraine from progressing into a severe disabling attack. For immediate relief Have a bath or shower. Lie down to rest in a dark room. Put something cold on the back of your neck, such as a cold wet cloth. Have some food, or a nutritious drink, if you haven’t eaten for a while. Massage your own face, head, neck and shoulders, or get someone else to do those and your back. Relax your muscles. Avoid exercise during a headache if it makes throbbing pain in the head and neck worse. On the other hand, generally exercise improves health and it may help you relax during a headache. Avoid bright or flashing light. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

EXERCISE
“Check your blood sugar levels regularly to keep a track of your diabetes”. Regular excise helps to control the diabetes. Exercise means physical activity - inclusive of everything that gets you moving, such as walking, dancing, mopping the floor or working in the garden. You can reap the many benefits of exercise without going to a gym, playing strenuous sports or using lavish equipment. Regular physical activity helps insulin work better and improve your blood circulation. It lowers your blood glucose (sugar), blood pressure and cholesterol levels, thereby reducing your risk for heart disease and stroke. ¾¾ TO START SAFE AND ENJOYABLE EXERCISE ROUTINE REMEMBER FITTA: Frequency
3-7 days a week
Intensity
Light to moderate (you sweat and breathe deeply)
Time
At least 30 minutes (can accumulate in10-minutes bouts)
Type
All types of exercise that you like within safety limits
Aim
Energy expenditure of 1000-2000kcal (roughly 5 hours of slow walk) per week importance of blood glucose monitoring
¾¾ IMPORTANCE OF BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING: Everyone’s blood glucose response to exercise is different. Checking your blood glucose before and after exercise prevents low blood glucose (hypoglycaemia). Hypoglycaemia occurs when blood glucose falls below 4mmol/L. Severe hypoglycaemia can cause of consciousness. ¾¾ CAN EXERCISE HELP TO IMPROVE MY DIABETES? Exercise can help control your weight and lower your blood sugar levels. It also lowers the risk of heart disease, a condition that is common in people who have diabetes. Exercise can also help you feel better about yourself and improve your overall health. ¾¾ WHAT KIND OF EXERCISE SHOULD I DO? Talk to your doctor about what kind of exercise is right for you. Most doctors recommend aerobic exercise, which makes you breathe more deeply and makes your heart work harder. Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, jogging, aerobic dance or bicycling. If you have problems with the nerves in your feet or legs, your doctor may want you to do a type of exercise that wont put too much stress on your feet. These exercises include swimming, bicycling, rowing or chair exercises. When you start an exercise 8

program, go slowly. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workout as you get more fit. Talk to your doctor for specific advice. ¾¾ ARE THERE ANY RISKS IN EXERCISING? Yes, but the benefits far outweigh the risks. Exercise changes the way your body reacts to insulin. Regular exercise makes your body more sensitive to insulin, and your blood sugar level may get too low (called hypoglycemia) after exercising. You may need to check your blood sugar level before and after exercising. Your doctor can tell you what your blood sugar level should be before and after exercise. ¾¾ HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY BLOOD SUGAR IS TOO LOW WHILE I’M EXERCISING? Hypoglycemia usually occurs gradually, so you need to pay attention to how you are feeling during exercise. You may feel a change in your heartbeat, feel shaky or anxious or suddenly begin to sweat more than normal. When you feel this, you should stop exercising and follow your doctor’s advice about how to treat hypoglycemia. ¾¾ KEY TO KEEP EXERCISING - BENEFITS OF EXERCISE ªª Healthier muscles, bones & joints. ªª Lower blood sugar improved insulin sensitivity, ªª Improved mood, greater self esteem & a sense of well being Increased energy (calorie) expenditure. ªª Reduced anxiety, tension & depression, ªª Reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure & certain cancers. ªª Reduced insulin resistance that occurs as a result of being overweight. ªª Reduced risk of falls & fractures. ªª Reduced spending for health care. ¾¾ SAFE TIPS TO EXERCISE IN DIABETES ªª Avoid injecting into exercising limbs ªª Increase carbohydrate intake to minimize hypoglycemia at night if you are exercising in the evening ªª Have a snack handy in case your blood sugar level drops too low during exercising ªª Avoid exercising alone. Always carry an identification tag ªª Wear proper shoes and socks. Thick socks can help prevent blisters ªª If you have diabetic complications, consult you doctor before exercise ªª Talk to your doctor about the right exercise for you ªª Stop exercising if you are short of breath, feel like fainting or have pain in the evening

THE COMPLEX PATH TO PREGNANCY Conceiving a baby is something that many of us take for granted. Actually, the process is no less than a miracle. Even for the most fertile couple, the chance of becoming pregnant each month is only about one in four. An intricate sequence of events must be carefully orchestrated by chemical messengers (hormones). In both the man and the woman, the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and the luteinizing hormone (LH) prepare sperm and egg for their union. ÂÂ Sperm Develop in the Man: Beginning in puberty, a man’s body produces millions of sperm every day of his life. FSH and LH are released by the pituitary Hormones gland at the base of the brain. FSH activates sperm production. LH stimulates production of testosterone, which also contributes to the development of mature sperm. are produced inside the ÂÂ Sperm

testicles, and then move through a coiled tube called the epididymis. It takes up to three months for sperm to develop to maturity.  The vas deferens carries sperm from the epididymis to the seminal vesicles and prostate gland, where fluid is added to form semen.  Semen moves out of the body through the urethra. Although millions of sperm are released at ejaculation, most of the semen consists of fluid. This fluid provides nutrients and enzymes to nourish and protect the sperm. ¾¾ An Egg Develops in the Woman By the time she’s born, a woman already has her entire supply of eggs, about two million. The immature eggs, which are stored in the ovaries, decrease in number and quality as a woman ages. Beginning in puberty, pituitary and ovarian hormones are released, initiating ovulation and menstruation. ªª Immature eggs form sacs (follicles) in response to FSH. The follicles secrete estrogen, which widens the opening to the uterus (cervix) and changes the consistency of the cervical mucus, preparing a smooth passageway for sperm. One follicle becomes dominant and the egg within it begins to ripen. ªª LH increases suddenly (LH surge), stimulating release of the ripened egg from the ovary. This usually happens about 13 days from the beginning

of menstruation. The ruptured follicle that is left behind (corpus luteum) secretes progesterone, a hormone that prepares the uterine lining to nourish a fertilized egg. ¾¾ THE COMPLEX PATH TO PREGNANCY How Sperm and Egg Meet: For fertilization to occur, sperm must reach the egg within hours of ovulation. To do so, they need a clear passageway and “sperm-friendly” cervical mucus. ªª The Egg Is Picked Up: Small, finger like fimbriae grasp the egg, which is smaller than the dot on an “i,” and sweep it into the fallopian tube (one of a pair of narrow passages leading from the ovaries to the uterus). ªª Sperm Enter the Cervix: After swimming up the vagina, sperm enter the cervix, moving through the cervical mucus, into the uterus and then into the fallopian tubes. Out of the millions of sperm that were ejaculated, only a few hundred survive the journey through the reproductive tract. ªª Fertilization Occurs: The egg is fertilized when one of the sperm manages to tunnel its way through the egg’s protective covering. Inside the fallopian tube, the fertilized egg (now called an embryo) prepares itself for implantation in the uterus. ªª The Fertilized Egg Implants: Several days after fertilization, muscular contractions move the fertilized egg from the fallopian tube into the uterus. The embryo imbeds itself in the uterine lining (endometrium) several days after arriving in the uterus. The pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), is now secreted by the cells around the embryo. This hormone helps keep up production of progesterone from the ovary, which helps maintain the pregnancy. ¾¾ OBSTACLES TO PREGNANCY The road to conception is not always smooth. Age, lifestyle, or medical problems may cause infertility, which is often defined as the inability to conceive within one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Factors contributing to infertility might be found in one or both partners; sometimes a cause cannot be found. Your ability to conceive may depend on the answers to the questions below. As your doctor helps you and your partner explore possible causes and treatment options, avoid feeling guilty or placing blame. Share the challenge and support each other.
10
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
Are There Enough Healthy Sperm? A man must produce enough active, normal sperm to enable fertilization of the woman’s egg. ¾¾ Is an Egg Being Released? A woman’s eggs need to be regularly released from her ovaries if sperm and egg are going to meet. ¾¾ Can the Sperm and Egg Meet? To meet, the sperm and the egg must be able to travel through the male or female reproductive tracts; each pathway must be free of blockage. ¾¾ Can the Egg Implant? A fertilized egg must be able to implant in the uterine lining. ¾¾ Is Age Affecting Fertility? Women are born with about two million immature eggs, but most disintegrate without maturing or being ovulated. After age 35, the number and quality of eggs begin to decrease, dropping markedly after age 40. Hormone levels may also shift, which can prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation or implantation of the egg in the uterus. This is why evaluation should not be delayed if you are a woman over age 35. A man’s body generates sperm throughout his life, so his age is not usually a factor in fertility problems. ¾¾ IMPROVING YOUR CHANCES Depending on your age, health, and the length of time you’ve been trying to conceive, your doctor may suggest that you and your partner first try some simple ways of increasing your chances for pregnancy. There are several methods for identifying a woman’s fertile time, such as those described below. In some cases, changes in lifestyle or health habits may also help boost fertility. ¾¾ Timing Can Be Everything Conception is possible only when a woman is ovulating. If fertility conditions are ideal, sexual intercourse just before or during ovulation may lead to conception. Factors that signal ovulation include a rise in body temperature, changes in cervical mucus, and a sudden increase (surge) in LH. The chart below shows changes in a typical cycle, giving you a clear idea of the most “fruitful” time for sexual intercourse. ÂÂ Body Temperature Rises: In response to hormone levels, your body’s temperature at rest-basal body temperature (BBT) -often drops just before ovulation. It rises just after ovulation as progesterone increases. Try to have sexual intercourse on the day that your temperature drops or right before the time it typically rises. ÂÂ Cervical Mucus Changes : Cervical mucus is usually thick and cloudy. Before ovulation, at about day 9 or 10 of your cycle, mucus increases, becoming clear and stretchy to help sperm travel to your fallopian tubes. Try to have sexual intercourse within one or two days after you notice this change, and at least every other day until the mucus thickens again. ÂÂ LH Surges: Since LH (luteinizing hormone) stimulates ovulation, your body will have a surge of this hormone just before ovulation

occurs. Ovulation predictor kits can detect this surge, showing you that ovulation is about to occur. Try to have sexual intercourse within one or two days after the time of the LH surge. Timing Tips For the most precise temperature readings, use a special BBT thermometer (a chart will also be included) or a digital thermometer. Most pharmacies, drugstores, and fertility clinics sell BBT thermometers, as well as ovulation predictor kits. If you’re sick or have a restless night (both can affect your temperature), be sure to note it on your chart If you have any unusual spotting or bleeding, note that also, and talk with your doctor. If constant monitoring makes you and your partner too anxious, your doctor may have other suggestions for you. If you’re charting your BBT, always take your temperature in the morningas soon as you wake up and before you do anything else. If you have a BBT thermometer, leave it in your mouth for four to five minutes. When trying to conceive, have sexual intercourse at least every other day around the time of ovulation.
¾¾
Lifestyle and Health Habits Some lifestyle choices and health habits, such as those described below, may also affect your ability to conceive. Ask your doctor about them. ªª Smoking: In women, smoking may change estrogen levels and deplete egg production. Nicotine can be toxic to sperm in the cervical mucus. In men, smoking may lower sperm count, decrease sperm movement, and cause abnormally shaped sperm. ªª Weight Problems: Women who are significantly overweight or under-weight often have difficulty getting pregnant. Too much or too little body fat can affect hormone levels and impair ovulation. In men, excess weight may raise testicular temperature, decreasing sperm count. ªª Alcohol and Drugs: Excessive alcohol drinking can lower sperm count and cause abnormal sperm production. Drugs such as marijuana or cocaine affect hormone production in women and lower sperm count in men. ªª Strenuous Exercise: Frequent strenuous exercise (such as daily long distance running can decrease hormone production in womenand possibly in men. In women, it can also cause irregular menstruation or amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), resulting in fertility problems. ªª Testicular Heat: A man’s testicles are normally several degrees cooler than the rest of his body. When the testicles are too warm, sperm production decreases. High fever, hot work environments, hot tubs, saunas, and tight pants may raise testicular temperature and decrease fertility.
March-2013

ªª
Other Factors: Your doctor may discuss other factors that could affect fertility. Certain types of lubricants can damage or destroy sperm. Some medications may decrease sperm count. In some women, stress and anxiety may inhibit ovulation. ¾¾ THE MAN’S EVALUATION Fertility testing for men is often less involved than is the testing for women. A semen analysis to examine your sperm is usually the first step. If any problems are revealed in that analysis, you’ll need to see your doctor for a complete evaluation and possibly further testing. During the first visit, your doctor gathers information about your medical history and checks for any physical problems that may be affecting fertility. ªª Your Medical History: Your doctor will need to know whether you’ve had mumps, high fevers, diabetes, a previous injury or surgery, or infections such as sexually transmitted diseases. All of these may affect fertility. You’ll also be asked about chemical exposure, stress, drug and alcohol use, medications, exercise habits, timing and frequency of sexual intercourse, and your family’s fertility history. ªª Your Physical Exam: Your doctor may examine your reproductive organs for problems that could affect fertility.  Your testicles are checked to see if they are in their proper position in the scrotum. Before or soon after birth, the testicles normally descend from the groin or lower abdomen to the scrotum. A testicle that has not descended is unlikely to produce normal sperm because the body temperature is too high. ‘  Your scrotum is examined for the presence of an enlarged vein (varicocele). This can cause pooling of blood and a rise in testicular temperature, which can reduce the quality and quantity of sperm.  Your prostate may be examined for abnormal consistency and the prostatic fluid may be checked for the presence of blood, pus, or bacteria. These could be signs of infection.  In addition, your doctor may evaluate the distribution of fat and hair on your body, which are indicators of hormone production. Blood tests may be done to measure hormone levels and detect thyroid, liver, or kidney’ problems, which may affect fertility.  Your doctor may need to examine your reproductive organs if a problem is revealed in your semen analysis. Your Semen Analysis: To evaluate the quality and quantity of your sperm, ejaculated semen samples are examined under a microscope. This helps detect factors that might impair the sperm’s ability to travel to the fallopian tubes or penetrate the egg’s protective covering. Since sperm counts may change daily, more than one sample may be needed. To help ensure an accurate sample: www.bangalorehealthtv.com
11
ªª
Avoid sexual intercourse for two to three days before collecting your sample. ªª Use a clean glass container (or one provided by the laboratory), and include all of your ejaculate. ªª If you collect the sample at home, deliver it to the lab within half an hour, keeping the container at body temperature (such as under your arm or between your legs). ªª Sperm Motility: Sperm motility is the sperm’s ability to swim in a forward motion. A motility rate of at least 50% is considered normal. ªª Sperm Count: The number of sperm per cubic centimetre of semen is counted. A count below 20 million may indicate decreased fertility. ªª Sperm Shape (Morphology): A sufficient number of the sperm should have an oval head and a long tail, enabling them to penetrate an egg. Abnormally shaped sperm cannot fertilize an egg. ¾¾ Other Possible Tests Depending on the results of your physical exam and semen analysis, your doctor may also perform additional tests, such as the following: ªª Antibody testing determines whether the man or woman produces antibodies to sperm-Appearing in blood, cervical mucus, or seminal fluid, the antibodies may react to sperm as invaders and destroy or immobilize them. ªª A vasogram is an x-ray that uses dye to outline ducts to reveal any obstructions. ªª Ultrasound of the seminal vesicles provides images that show the size of the vesicles, their development, and whether they’re emptying and storing sperm properly. ªª Additional tests may include a sperm penetration assay, fructose testing, or a testicular biopsy. ¾¾ MAN’S TREATMENT If a problem is found during your evaluation, your doctor will talk with you about the most effective methods for correcting it. Factors that decrease male fertility may be treatable with medication, hormones, or surgery. Improving Sperm Production: For the best chance of conception, your body needs a healthy reproductive tract, an adequate supply of quality sperm, and the right amount of hormones. These factors may be improved through various types of treatment. ªª Treating Infection: If any part of the reproductive tract (such as the prostate, epididymis, or urethra) is infected, fertility problems may result. These infections can usually be treated with antibiotics. ªª Improving Sperm Concentration: Sperm washing, a procedure done in a doctor’s office, separates sperm from seminal fluid. This concentrates the more active sperm, which can then be inseminated into the woman. ªª Treating Sperm Antibodies: Some men form antibodies that attack and destroy their own
12

sperm, interfering with fertilization. In vitro fertilization (IVF-laboratory fertilization) is often the only way to avoid sperm antibody problems. In some cases, medication or sperm washing may be used for this condition. ªª Correcting Hormone Problems: Hormone therapy may boost hormone levels, which may increase sperm production. Treatment usually involves medication taken for at least three months. ¾¾ Solving Other Problems Fertility problems related to varicoceles, ductal obstructions, or ejaculation are not common, but can usually be treated with surgical or nonsurgical methods. If a man chooses to reverse a vasectomy, the procedure itself is usually successful, but fertility may not be restored.  Treating a Varicocele: When enlarged veins in the scrotum (varicoceles) affect sperm production by increasing heat, the veins can be closed off with surgery. Deeper veins will then carry the blood flow. Other techniques, such as balloon insertion, may be used to block the flow of blood in the enlarged veins.  Reversing Vasectomy: Surgery to reverse a vasectomy (vasovasostomy) reconnects the ends of the vas deferens to allow sperm to move from the testicles to the penis. The shorter the time between vasectomy and reversal, the more successful the results. Waiting longer may lead to antibody production or damage to the epididymis from pressure and scarring.  Clearing Ductal: Obstructions Obstructions can prevent sperm from traveling through the male reproductive system. Sperm may be blocked by swelling, scarring, or infection. Microsurgical techniques may be used to clear the blockage.  Treating Ejaculation Problems: In some men, sperm is propelled backward into the bladder during ejaculation instead of forward through the penis. Certain medications, surgeries, or nerve damage may cause this condition. If the problem can’t be solved, sperm can be recovered from the urine after ejaculation, and then artificially inseminated. ¾¾ THE WOMAN’S EVALUATION During your first visit, your doctor may gather detailed information about your medical history and give you a physical exam. If the results of your partner’s semen analysis are normal, your doctor may recommend tests or diagnostic procedures for you, depending on your age and your general health. Some procedures may be done in your doctor’s office, while others are done in a hospital or other surgical setting. Your Medical History: Your doctor will ask a variety of questions about your medical history. Be sure to mention any prior surgeries, pregnancies and terminations, sexually transmitted diseases, or other pelvic infections you’ve had. You’ll also be asked about your menstrual history and frequency

of sexual intercourse. Your Physical Exam: Your doctor will check your general physical condition. Your breast development, along with fat and hair distribution, are evaluated as indicators of hormone activity. A pelvic exam will be performed to check your ovaries and other pelvic organs for tenderness, swelling, infections, or growths. Your fertility evaluation includes a complete examination of your reproductive organs. ªª Fertility Testing: Depending on your age, your health, and your general exam, your fertility workup may begin with the simplest, least invasive tests. Some of these tests may need to be repeated to confirm your diagnosis. ªª Cervical Cultures: Samples from your cervix are examined for signs of sexually transmitted diseases or other infections. These could interfere with fertility by causing inflammation or damage to your reproductive organs. ªª Blood Tests: A variety of blood tests can reveal prior pelvic infections and measure levels of thyroid, pituitary, or ovarian hormones during your menstrual cycles. Blood tests may also help determine if you are ovulating normally or reveal antibodies that may be attacking sperm. ªª Postcoital Tests: A sample of your cervical mucus may be tested a short time after sexual intercourse, usually within 12 hours. This can reveal the quality of the mucus, as well as the sperm’s ability to swim through the mucus. The postcoital test is usually done one or two days before ovulation, when the cervical mucus is the most favorable to sperm. ªª OHSG: The hysterosalpin-gogram (HSG) is an x-ray used to detect tubal blockage or uterine problems. A dye is injected through the cervix and x-rays are taken. This test is usually done after menstruation and injected dye before ovulation. ªª Endometrial Biopsy ; With an endometrial biopsy, the uterine lining (endometrium) is examined to see how it responds to hormones. The test can reveal whether progesterone is preparing the uterus for implantation of the fertilized egg. It can also detect inflammation in the uterus. With a small catheter inserted through the cervical canal, a tiny sample of endometrium is taken for microscopic examination. This is usually done two to four days before menstruation. ªª Ultrasound: This imaging test uses highfrequency sound waves to produce images of

internal organs. Done at various points in the menstrual cycle, ultrasound shows whether the follicles are developing adequately and ovulation is occurring. Ultrasound can also reveal cysts, fibroids, and the thickness of the uterine lining. During a vaginal ultrasound, a small probe is inserted into the vagina near the cervix. ªª Hysteroscopy: Inside views of the uterine cavity and cervix are possible with hysteroscopy. Your doctor can see growths or other abnormalities through a small lighted telescope (hysteroscope) inserted through the cervical opening. This procedure is usually done just after menstruation, to obtain the clearest view of the uterine cavity. . ªª Laparoscopy: Laparoscopy can reveal scar tissue or abnormal growths on the outer surfaces of your reproductive organs. Your doctor views the organs through a small lighted telescope (laparoscope) inserted through a tiny incision near the navel. Anesthesia will be used during laparoscopy so you won’t feel any pain. This procedure may be done at various points of the menstrual cycle. ¾¾ THE WOMAN’S TREATMENT If test results show that you’re not ovulating normally, your doctor may recommend hormone therapy, which may be given by pill or injection. Your age, health, and medical history will be considered before hormones are prescribed. Talk with your doctor about how these medications affect ovulation, how to use them, and any potential side effects. Be sure to ask questions about anything that is unclear to you. ªª Ovulation Problems: Infrequent, irregular, or nonexistent ovulation may be signaled by relatively constant body temperatures-and be caused by one or more factors, such as the following: ªª Pituitary dysfunction results when the pituitary gland is not secreting the right amount of hormones. ªª Polycystic ovaries form tiny cysts and fail to ovulate. ªª An inadequate luteal phase means the uterine lining is not adequately prepared for implantation of a fertilized egg, due to lack of progesterone. ªª Premature menopause means menstrual periods have stopped. Treatment for some of these problems may include hormone medications such as those listed in the chart, on the next page. These medications can help balance your body’s production of hormones. ¾¾ Improving Ovulation The chart below lists some of the most common hormonal medications used in fertility treatment. Note: This chart is not a complete list of available hormone medications and does not imply endorsement of any meditation type or brand. The list does not contain every possible side effect, adverse reaction, precaution, or interaction for these drugs. Only your doctor can recommend or prescribe these types of medications. ¾¾ THE WOMAN’S TREATMENT Even if ovulation is occurring normally, sperm may have difficulty reaching the egg, or the fertilized egg may not implant in the uterus. Problems like these can often be treated with medication or surgery. ¾¾ Improving the Passage of Sperm www.bangalorehealthtv.com
13
Through the Cervix: Sperm may not move smoothly through the cervix because of problems such as the following:  Infections can prevent sperm from travelling easily through your reproductive tract. Antibiotics can often correct these problems.  Too little cervical mucus may inhibit the passage of sperm. Treatment for this condition may include estrogen pills or intrauterine insemination (IUI-inserting sperm directly into the uterus) to bypass the cervical mucus.  Antibody problems may occur when antibodies present in your cervix react to sperm as invaders and destroy or immobilize them. In vitro fertilization (IVF-laboratory fertilization) may be required to avoid antibody problems. If sperm are not moving smoothly through the cervix, the problem may be related to infection, a lack of cervical mucus, or antibodies. Treatment may include medication or intrauterine insemination (IUI). ¾¾ Through the Fallopian Tubes Various factors can damage fallopian tubes, preventing sperm from traveling through them. ªª Adhesions (scar tissue formed by disease or infection in the fallopian tubes) may damage or even close the tubes. If the tubes are not extensively damaged, surgical treatment can often help. ªª A mucus plug, which may obstruct a fallopian tube near the uterus, can be treated by inserting a thin catheter through the cervix into the blocked tube. ªª Tubal sterilization (where the fallopian tubes have been severed and tied off may be reversed and the tubes micro surgically reconnected, allowing a passageway for sperm. If fallopian tubes are blocked, damaged, severed, sperm may be unable to travel through the tube to meet the egg. Surgical treatment can often help. ¾¾ Improving Implantation ªª In the Uterus: An egg may not implant in the uterus due to problems such as the following: ªª Scarring inside the uterus (adhesions) or a deformity such as a uterine septum (dividing wall) may prevent implantation. These problems can often be treated through hysteroscopic surgery. ªª Fibroids (noncancerous growths made of smooth muscle tissue) may occasionally grow in or around the uterus. Fibroids may be removed (myomectomy) by either abdominal or hysteroscopic surgery. Sometimes medications may be used to reduce the size of the fibroid before surgery. ªª Adhesions, fibroids, or deformities in the uterus may prevent an egg from implanting. Surgery or medication can often treat these conditions. ¾¾ Treating Endometriosis Endometriosis occurs when tissue from the internal lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows in or on other parts of the reproductive system, such as the ovary or uterine ligaments. This may lead to scarring of the affected organs and possible fertility problems.
14
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
Laparoscopic surgery, hormone therapy, or both may be used to treat this condition. ¾¾ ASSISTED REPRODUCTION If your fertility problems remain unexplained, or if other types of treatment are unsuccessful, you might consider assisted reproductive technologies (ART). These methods range from simple insemination to highly technological manipulation of egg and sperm. Along with many of these techniques, you may also need hormone treatment to improve your chance for success. Your doctor can talk with you about the details, success rates, and costs of the procedures. Intrauterine Insemination: If you are facing problems with a low sperm count, mild endometriosis, unexplained infertility, cervical mucus deficiency, or cervical antibodies, a possible solution may be intrauterine insemination (IUI). Sperm is placed inside the uterus, using a thin catheter inserted through the cervix. JUJ may be done in combination with hormone treatments to increase egg production. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): If you’re experiencing pelvic scarring, tubal damage or obstruction, male infertility, or unexplained infertility, in vitro fertilization (IVF) may help. Medication is used to stimulate the ovaries, producing mature eggs. The woman’s eggs are removed with a thin needle inserted into the ovary. This may be done through the vagina or with a laparoscope. In a laboratory, the extracted eggs are combined with the man’s sperm. A few days later, one or more embryos are inserted into the woman’s uterus. If fertilization does not occur, micromanipulation may be used along with IVF: After egg removal, one or more sperm are injected directly into or around the eggs, then one or more embryos are inserted into the uterus. GIFT/ZIFT: Gamete intra fallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) are proving successful for many who have problems with mild endometriosis, unexplained infertility, sperm production, or sperm antibodies. The techniques are similar to IVF, but with GIFT, sperm and eggs are placed next to each other in a fallopian tube to allow fertilization in the natural site. With ZIFT, eggs and sperm are first fertilized in the lab and then transferred to a fallopian tube. For both GIFT and ZIFT, the woman must have at least one normal, open fallopian tube. Sperm Donation: If low-quality sperm or low sperm count is a problem, you might consider donor sperm insemination. Sperm from a known or anonymous donor is used to inseminate the woman. The sperm is obtained from commercial sperm banks, where it is extensively tested for sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. After Pag 16....

the sperm is frozen and stored for six months, the donor is retested for HIV before the sperm is released for use. Egg Donation: For women with premature menopause or women over 40 years old who have undergone unsuccessful fertility treatments, egg donation may be a solution. An egg from a known or anonymous donor can be fertilized by your partner’s sperm using IVF, GIFT, or ZIFT. Surrogacy: If you are unable to maintain a pregnancy, or if you aren’t producing eggs, surrogacy may be an option. In traditional surrogacy, another woman gives birth to a baby conceived with her egg and your partner’s sperm. In gestational surrogacy, another woman gives birth to a baby conceived with your egg and your partner’s sperm. Be sure to explore all of the legal and emotional dimensions of this option. ¾¾ KEEPING A POSITIVE OUTLOOK Dealing with fertility treatments and wrestling with your emotions can be frustrating and exhausting.
But if you feel discouraged or depressed, remember that you’re not alone. Take advantage of the help that your doctor, support groups, and counselors can give you. Keep sharing your feelings with your partner. What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of blood against the artery walls; arteries are blood vessels that supply blood from heart to the body. Blood pressure rises and falls throughout trie day but normal blood pressure is 120mmHg systolic (Systolic blood pressure is the pressure exerted on arteries when heart contracts’) and 80mmHg diastolic blood pressure(Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when heart rest between the heart beats). ¾¾ What is hypertension? Increase in blood pressure than it should be is called as high blood pressure also known as HYPERTENSION. Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disorder, kidney disease and stroke.’ ¾¾ What are the sign & symptoms of hypertension? High blood pressure usually has no signs or symptoms but occasionally headaches do occur. Hence hypertension is also called as silent killer because it continues to harm the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body without any sign and symptoms. The risk factors for hypertension are: 1. Old age: Blood pressure tends to increase with age, Male older than 45 years & female older than 55 years are prone to have increase blood pressure 2. Over weight and obesity: Weight more than that is considered normal is a risk factor for hypertension 3. Gender: Adult women have lesser risk than adult men but younger women are more prone to hypertension than men, Age 60 years or older the the tendency is similar in men and women 4. Unhealthy life style: eating to much of sodium (salt), Alcohol consumption, Smoking, Failing to do enough physical activity, Not consuming

You might use this time to re-evaluate your goals or agree on a time when you will stop treatment if pregnancy doesn’t occur. Setting a deadline may help both of you regain a sense of control. Pursuing Alternatives: If you’ve decided to end your treatments and move on, you may have already reached a resolution for the future. Perhaps you’ve decided not to have children, which can be gratifying in other ways. If you do want children, adoption is an enriching and rewarding alternative for many. If you’re considering adoption, find out as much as you can. Get materials on independent adoption and public or private adoption agencies. Talk to parents who have adopted. If adoption isn’t for you, you may want to look into foster parenting, or getting with organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters

¾¾ What are the treatment options?
1. Treatment goal: The treatment goal for most adults is to get and keep blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg.’, For adults who have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, the goal is to keep blood pressure below 130/30 mmHg, 2. Lifestyle Changes: Healthy lifestyle habits can help you control hypertension. These habits included ÂÂ Following a healthy diet ÂÂ Being physically active ÂÂ Maintaining a healthy weight ÂÂ Quitting smoking ÂÂ Managing stress and learning to cope with stress 3. Medication: ‘Today’s blood pressure medicines can safely help most people control their blood pressure. These medicines are easy to take. The side effects, if any, tend to be minor. These medications are decided by the treating physician. In case of any side effects it is essential to report to the doctor since continuation or stopping of hypertensive medicine is decided by the treating physician only. Patient should not stop these medications on their own.’ Blood pressure medicines work in different ways to lower blood pressure. Some remove extra fluid and salt from the body to lower blood pressure. Others slow down the heartbeat or relax and widen blood vessels. Glaucoma
The silent thief of your eyesight DONT LET GLAUCOMA DARKEN YOUR LIFE! GET CHECKED FOR GLAUCOMA TODAY
Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause irreversible loss of vision. It is deadly because there are no early signs of warning. In fact, you may be suffering from Glaucoma but are unaware of it. By the time you start experiencing vision loss, an irreversible damage may have already occurred. Moreover having a parent or sibling with glaucoma increases the chances amongst your blood relatives to develop this condition. Fortunately, treatment can save your eyes if Glaucoma is detected early.
World Glaucoma week is observed from March 10th – 16th. The goal of this week is to enhance awareness through novel as well as tradional communication strategies and trends. World glaucoma week is observed to raise awareness of early detection to help preserve vision. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of global blindness and in India it is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. It is estimated that 67 million people worldwide suffer from glaucoma, of which 12 million reside in India alone. The number is likely to increase to 16 million by 2020. Approximately 2% of population between 40-50yrs of age and 8% of population over 70 has increased Intra ocular pressure, which is the major risk of glaucoma. Unfortunately 90100% of these glaucoma patients in developing countries and even 50% in developed countries are unaware that they have the disease, which is why it is called the” Silent killer of eye sight”. With an expected increase in the population and longevity, glaucoma is likely to become a major cause of ocular morbidity in the developing world, As the visual loss caused by glaucoma, unlike cataract ,is irreversible, it definitely requires more awareness amongst people. What is glaucoma: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy with typical changes in optic nerve and the field of vision. The pressure inside the eye i.e. called intraocular pressure is the casual risk factor, as the pressure in the eye increases it starts affecting optic nerve fibers which carry the impulses from eye to brain and that is how we “see”. As the nerve fibers get damaged the field of vision starts getting affected slowly. Since initially only the peripheral field gets involved and its only in advanced stage that the central vision gets affected, the patient does not realize until it is too late. As all these changes that occur in glaucoma are irreversible, we cannot cure

It is important for the people over the age of 40 to have regular comprehensive eye examinations that include a careful evaluation of the optic nerve and measurement of eye pressure. Therefore it is mandatory that all patients above this age have to undergo screening for glaucoma. People who are predisposed to have glaucoma are the ones with positive family history, diabetics, myopes(short sighted), injury to the eye and are on steroid treatment in any form . Children can also get affected by glaucoma, which is called congenital or developmental glaucoma. Children who develop this disease in the early months of life (1 in 3,300 in India) need immediate intervention, failing which; they can go blind for life. ¾¾ Who are at risk for Glaucoma ªª People with a family history of glaucoma5 ªª People over 40 years of age ªª People with diabetes5 ªª People who have used steroids for a long period of time5 ªª People with physical eye injuries5 ¾¾ How is Glaucoma diagnosed? A comprehensive eye check-up by an ophthalmologist is the best way to detect glaucoma. A complete eye examination includes measuring IOP and evaluating the drainage angle of the eye and the optic nerve. Additionally, visual field tests are used to evaluate the peripheral vision of each eye. ¾¾How can Glaucoma be treated? While there is no cure for glaucoma, elevated IOP is currently the only treatable risk factor. It is important to treat aggressively with the most effective products such as prescription eye drops that can provide maximum reduction of elevated IOP with long-term control. In some cases, surgery can also help. It is important for patients to use medication as prescribed and maintain regular examinations with an ophthalmologist who can evaluate glaucoma progression and treatment options. Glaucoma is treated with wide range of medications, lasers and microsurgery; the management varies according to type and severity of glaucoma. Irrespective of the type of treatment, Periodic Follow Up plays a key role in controlling the disease and preserving the vision. For patients under medical treatment for glaucoma it is very important to use the medication regularly and on a long- term basis in consultation with their doctor.

to the heart in response to normal activities such as exercising; treatment and diagnostic options are broadened; the need for long-term treatment with anti-clotting medications may be reduced; and future interventions would be unobstructed as it would be by a permanent implant. “With the launch of BVS we can offer our patients a significant advancement in the treatment of coronary artery disease. The structure starts to resorb within one year, allowing the vessel the potential to flex, pulsate and dilate in response to normal activities such as exercise,” said Dr. Yusuf Kumble, Indiana Hospital, MBBS, MD, DM CARDIOLOGY (AIIMS) “This revolutionary technology may allow blood vessels to return to a more natural state and expand long-term diagnostic and treatment options.” The launch of Abbott’s BVS is supported by a clinical trial program that encompasses five studies in more than 20 countries around the world, including India. Study data indicate that Abbott’s BVS perform similar to a best-in-class drug eluting stent across traditional measures such as major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and target lesion revascularization (TLR), while providing patients with the added benefits Indiana Hospital associated with a device that dissolves over time. As the scaffold dissolves, vascular function is potentially restored to the blood vessel, allowing more blood to flow through the vessel as the body requires. BVS has been implanted in more than 3,000 patients in over 30 countries worldwide in clinical trials and commercial settings. Ongoing study of BVS in Indian population has shown robust clinical results in a 6 month follow up. “BVS is a leading example of Abbott’s commitment to innovation – from the initial device developed nearly 10 years ago to the expansion of our manufacturing capabilities to support this launch,” said Amit Kumar, regional director and general manager, South Asia and Southeast Asia .
World’s First Drug Eluting Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold has Potential to Revolutionize Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease ªª Abbott’s Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS) Now Available in India ªª Clinical Data and Initial Commercial Experience Reinforce Broad Clinical Benefit of Abbott’s BVS Abbott recently announced the launch of the world’s first drug eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) in Mangalore. Abbott’s BVS is a first-of-its-kind device for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). It works by restoring blood flow to the heart similar to a metallic stent, but then dissolves into the body over time, leaving behind a treated vessel that may resume more natural function and movement because it is free of a permanent metallic stent. Abbott’s BVS is made of polylactide, a naturally dissolvable material that is commonly used in medical implants such as dissolving sutures. The potential long-term benefits of a scaffold that dissolves are significant. The vessel may expand and contract as needed to increase the flow of blood

ATROPA BELLADONNA is a poisonous plant, commonly called as Belladonna,Devil’s cherries,Naughty man’s cherries, Black cherry. In hindi it is popularly known as Angur shefa & in sanskrit it is Suchi. Belladonna belongs to solanaceae family(tomato family), it’s a perennial herbaceous plant growing to 5 feet tall. Leaves are darkish green in color which attend purple spot after maturation. Flowers are purplish color. The fruit is smooth berry which ripens to shiny black or deep purple color. Atropa Belladonna is native to Europe, North America and Western Asia. Successfully cultivated in England, France,North America and also some parts of India(KASHMIR). Under shade of tree, on wooded hills, on chalk or lime stone, it will grow most luxuriously. Belladonna is one of the most toxic plants found in the Eastern Hemisphere. All parts of the plant contain tropane alkaloids. The berries pose the greatest danger to children because they look attractive and have a somewhat sweet taste. The consumption of two to five berries or single leaf of the plant by a human adult is probably lethal. The root of the plant is generally the most toxic part. Plant becomes more poisonous during flowering. ¾¾ CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Belladonna contains active agents atropine, hyoscine (scopolamine), and hyoscyamine which are of great medicinal value. Hence this plant plays a vital role in sector of AYUSH. Especially in the field of Homeopathy, Belladonna commonly called Beautiful Lady, have its own charm from many more ancient years. Scopolamine is used as the hydrobromide salt for GI complaints, motion sickness and to potentiate the analgesic and anxiolytic effects of opioid analgesics. It was formerly used in a painkiller called ‘Twilight sleep’ in childbirth. Hyoscyamine used as the hydrobromide salt for GI complaints and Parkinson’s diseases. It is used to

combat the toxic effect of organophosphates. Usually Belladonna works by blocking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine muscarinic receptor(M1) antagonist. ¾¾ USES Scientific evidence recommend the use of Atropa belladonna in its natural form from late 1830s, in US with prescription by name, Donnatal, to provide peripheral anticholinergic /antispasmodic action. But its uses was from ancient time. Belladonna originates from its historic use by women. Drops of belladonna used to dilate women’s pupil (Antimuscarinic). Belladonna has been used in herbal medicine for centuries as a pain reliever, muscle relaxer, and antiinflammatory, and to treat menstrual problems, peptic ulcer disease, histaminic reaction, and motion sickness. Belladonna tinctures, decoctions, and powders, as well as alkaloid salt mixtures, are still produced for pharmaceutical use. Presently Atropa belladonna used as powerful muscle relaxant, believed to relieve pain and muscle spasm in the stomach and intestine bile ducts, used as a cure for peptic ulcers, acts as an-esthetic, an antidote to some mushrooms poisons, insect bites, nerve gas, headache and irritable bowel syndrome. Belladonna is externally applied to lessen irritability and pain, and is used as a lotion, plaster or liniment in cases of neuralgia, gout, rheumatism and sciatica. Belladonna is most suitable to treat disorders of the heart, blood vessels, lungs as well as the nervous system. It is believed that it dilate even blood vessels. Committee for veterinary medicinal products certified that Atropa Belladonna is used in species like horse, cattle, pigs and sheep as parenteral dose and also oral dose against biliary track infection and gastro intestinal pain. The World Health Organization considers Atropa belladonna a core medicine for the association’s Essential Drugs List. Present scientific evidences show that Belladonna activates CD8 cells. These cells are responsible for Apoptosis (programmed cell death).Further research may open the door to solve some of the cancer problems also from Belladonna. Belladonna liquid extract: It is given in the collapse of pneumonia, typhoid fever and other acute diseases. SIDE EFFECTS- No doubt Belladonna is a wonder drug. Apart from this it also leads to side effect in some patients. As Belladonna contain toxin with narcotic www.bangalorehealthtv.com

DOSAGEHomeopathic “ Belladonna Preparations” have been sold as treatments for various conditions, although no scientific evidences supports their efficacy. Clinically and research trials, the most common preparation is diluted to the 30C level in homeopathic notation. The appropriate dose of belladonna depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. ANTIDOTEAntidote for belladonna poisoning is Physostigmine or Pilocarpine, the same as for Atropine. BELLADONNA LEAF AT MARKET- As found in the market, belladonna leaves, when crumpled or broken up, look very much like the mints, but are easily distinguished from them by the narcotic odor and disagreeably bitter taste. BIOTECHNOLOGY- Usage of Atropa belladonna in Plant Biotechnology have set path for many research and projects. Its rich composition of alkaloid in all parts of plant has increased research value. Invitro culture of this plant has given rise to callus culture and plants in lab condition. Root, callus, and cell suspension cultures have been established from seedlings of Atropa belladonna. Multiple shoot cultures were established from shoot tip and axillary meristem of the plant Atropa belladonna. The cultures were initially raised on agar medium and subsequently maintained on liquid medium of Murashige and Skoog (1962) supplemented with BA. Haploid plants are cultured using pollen from flowers. Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer had given rise to many genetically modified plants. Its rich phytochemicals are solution for many more problems. Homeopathy is having great demand in India. More than 10,000kg of belladonna is imported every year as India won’t cultivate this plant everywhere to fulfill need because of climatic condition and also lack of information. Cultivation of this plant is of commercial value. Micro propagation of this plant may lay commercial supply for pharmaceutical companies. Development of stress resistance plant may enable the growth of belladonna in other parts of world including India. CONTRADICTORY FOOD CONBINATIONS Whenever contradictory food is consumed knowingly or unknowingly, it will cause indigestion and gas in the stomach along with constipation. This is a basic consequence of all contradictory food combinations. Sometimes these food combinations have the same effect as deliberately poisoning the body Ayurvedic classics say an unwholesome diet is responsible for causing sterility ,blindness, obstinate skin diseases etc. Read this article to find out these food combinations and how they become unwholesome. March-2013
AYURPHARMA
The two major causes of disease are indigestion and constipation. Proper digestion automatically takescare of the rest. Combining foods improperly can produce indigestion, fermentation petrification, gasformation which further can diminish Agni - the digestive capacity, change the intestinal flora, producing toxins. If this condition is prolonged it can lead to toxaemia and disease complex. Ayurvedic classics say an unwholesome diet is responsible for causing sterility ,blindness, obstinate skin diseases , ascites , skin eruptions , insanity , fistula , fainting , intoxication , typanitis , spasmodic obstruction in the throat , anaemia’s ,poisoning due to ama - toxin, kilasa type of skin diseases , obstinate skin diseases including leprosy , sprue , oedema , acid dyspepsia fever , rhinitis ,foetal birth defects and even sprue. Health is directly proportional to the quality of food we consume. People with in-depth knowledge about the facts of foods of contradictory nature and related diseases makes it clear that those who refrain from consuming contradictory foods can avoid diseases that eventually makes life miserable. Ideally, it is the people who cook who need to be educated about the dangers involved in taking contradictory foods. Diet becomes unwholesome for the bio energies and tissue elements of the body when they dislodge the bioenergy and do not expel them out of the body in contrast with Panchakarma procedures wherein, as a cleansing process thedislodged vitiated bioenergy are expelled out of the body very comfortably. Peoplewho exercise well, the youth and the strong may not get too affected by small violations of contradictoryfood combinations. This is because the strong and the healthy will normally carry the tolerance level toexpedite digestion and excrete the waste promptly. Such people do not have to worry so much aboutfood combinations. But in the long run it is best that everyone, irrespective of their age or health conditionfollow the principles of correct food combinations. Our knowledge and wisdom should play a big part in mastering this fundamental issue. www.bangalorehealthtv.com
27
Food inherits itscontradictory nature through drugs and diet which disagree with place, time ,power of digestion , dosage, habit , doshas , mode of preparation , potency , bowel state of health , order, proscription and prescription, conflicting combination ,palatability ,richness of quality and rules of eating . Choosing food combinations depending on the place where we live plays a very important role in maintaining our health. The influence of the environment on food habits derives from a composite of ecological and social factors. Foods that are commonly and easily grown within a specific region frequently become a part of the local cuisine. However, modern technology, agricultural practices, and transportation methods have increased the year-round availability of many foods, and many foods that were previously available only at certain seasons or in specific areas are now available almost anywhere, at any time.Intake of food which is dry and sharp in quality for people living in deserts is contradictory food /disagreeing food and produces an adverse effect on the health of the individuals.Deserts are areas of land with sparse vegetation, no arable farmland, and a very poor climate, usually hot and dry which act as barriers to civilizations, as crossing a desert is often very difficult, if not impossible. The biggest common factors are an absence of rain or other precipitation, little free water, few plants and only a few specialized plants andanimals. Habitation in deserts, whether it is animal or plant life is recommended a nourishing diet with enough of fat, sugar and water for sustenance and maintenance of health. Similarly Wetlands are areas such as swamps and marshes where water either covers the soil or is present at or near the surface, particularly in the root zone, at least a good portion of the year, including the growing season. People inhabiting these areas can succumb to diseases if they consume food having Unctuous and cold properties because this type of food disagrees with their place of habitation. Time is kala -- stands for time both in the form of day and night and for determination of wholesomeness of the food to different time of seasons. Eating cold food when the weather is cold and taking hot and spicy food during summer is contradictory /unwholesome to the body. Proper nutrition helps regulate core temperature, keeps your body warm and provides enough fuel for our working muscles. In warm weather we sweat to regulate our temperature and remove excess heat, but in cold weather we need to generate more heat to stay warm. In cold weather our body temperature normally drops and our metabolism increases to warm to humidify the air we breathe and we tend to burn more calories to stay warm. Breathing in cold, dry air forces our body to warm and humidify that air with each exhalation. When it comes to eating during cold weather warm food is ideal, because our body spends less energy to warm up or cool down the food you put in it, you may discover yourself better able to adapt when the temperature outside drops. Cold food and fluids can chill the bodywhereas herbs like Cayenne pepper, ginger, garlic and black pepper are all examples of ingredients that can warm you from within. Use them in beverages as well as meals and keep your internal fire stoked. In winter it is important to eat proper diet to replace carbohydrate stores that are being used for
28
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
exercise and warming. If we do not replace this energy we feel more fatigued and chilled. When we eat during hot weather what we eat has to help us beat the heati.e. we need to replace water we are losing when you are sweating. To replace this water it’s recommended to stock upon fruits and vegetables which are almost water in nutrition. To be able to maintain and perform well in summer you have to maintain water, sugar and salt in your body. How fast you can ride, or exercise is limited by the time it takes to bring oxygen into your muscles. If you can increase the oxygen supplied or decreases the oxygen needed you can move fast.Since sugar requires less oxygen to power your muscles than fat or protein anything that allows your muscles to burn more sugar and less fat will help you to move faster. You can markedly improve performance in endurance sports by starting to eat and drink soon after you start exercising say sport coachers. Do not take sugar until at least 5 minutes after you start your activity they say because when you eat and your muscles are not contracting, you get a high rise ininsulin; on other hand exercising muscles draw sugar rapidly without needing insulin. ªª Power of digestion:one has to consume food depending on one’s capacity to digest food. Intake of heavy food when the power of digestion is mild, intake of light food when the power of digestion is sharp or Intake of food at variance with irregular and normal power of digestion all attribute to contradictory dictums of consuming food. If ones power of digestion is weak and he consumes heavy food, the body has a hard time handling the nutrients that’seaten because it’s working overtime trying to deal with our body’s ability to break down, process and assimilate nutrients. If the body has to struggle to digest food, energy is diverted which might otherwise be used to stimulate our brain and help us repair tissues, organs and cells. Food that is not broken down spoils inside us and can be reabsorbed and re-circulated in the body, hurting the liver and the immune system and leading to disease, starting from constipation, gas, indigestion, allergies and halitosis (bad breath). Later can be a strong cause especially to autoimmune disorders such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc. The only solution to this crisis is to reconcile to a healthy lifestyle, especially adhering to better food habits. If we eaton our level of physical activity, Energy consumed by humans is converted to work, thermal energy, and stored fat. By far the largest fraction goes to thermal energy, although the fraction varies depending on the type of physical activity. The fraction going into each form depends both on how much we eat and on our level of physical activity. If we eat more than is needed to do work and stay warm, the remainder goes into body fat.Our own bodies, like all living organisms, are energy conversion machines. Conservation of energy implies that the chemical energy stored in food is converted into work, thermal energy, and/ or stored as chemical energy in fatty tissue. The reality is that ifwe are undisciplined about our food habits and this sooner or later forces us to live in misery due to the automatic illness it brings

about. If you don’t feed your bodyproperly when it needs food, the physical symptoms intensify. The stomach starts to really hurt. You find it more difficult to concentrate and may experience light-headedness. You may also get irritable and short-tempered. In addition, some people get shaky and nervous, while others get a headache. Because you are so ravenous at this point, once you do start to eat, you’re very vulnerable to uncontrolled eating or bingeing.Hunger and fullness is regulated by the brain. When your body has had enough food to satisfy its needs, signals are sent to the hypothalamus, registering fullness (also called satiety). When we are in tune to our bodies, we recognize when it’s time to stop eating. The stomach feels comfortable and satisfied–not stuffed. We soon begin to feel calmer, more alert and energized. It takes approximately 20 minutes for fullness signals to transmit from the stomach back to the brain. So, if you eat too fast and aren’t paying attention, it’s easy to override this system and eat more than what the body is calling for. ªª Food become unwholesome when certain food items are mixed together without giving consideration of the proportion , For e.g.Honey with ghee and vegetable oils in equal (1:1 ratio) or honey and rain water in equal quantity may act as slow poison. Honey is complex polysaccharide and ghee is a complex chain of fatty acids. Honey needs particular enzymes for its break up while ghee needs emulsification and action of lipase and other lipid breaking enzymes. So, this honey and ghee combination interacts with each other in GI tract and causes indigestion &ama creation which leads to over accumulation of free radicals in the systems. This over accumulation causes many diseases. Heating Honey (above 40 degrees Celsius) or intake of hot water after taking honey makes it toxic. When you heat honey directly, the enzymes present in honey precipitates or can cause glycation and make it poisonous. Heating also changes its structure and destroys its nutrients. So, never heat or mix honey with hot foods. You can spread or mix it on any food or

beverage after making it cold. Mixing honey to either tea or coffee when it is hot instead of sugar is not recommended. Amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins contained in honey get destroyed when you add it in tea or coffee. Mixing also decreases the scent and taste of the honey. It imbalances the Doshas and leads to energy loss. ªª Habitual intake of food depends on various factors cultural, social, religious, economic, environmental, and even political factors.Various food guides provide suggestions on foods to eat, portion sizes, and daily intake.Individual Preferencesdevelop over time, and are influenced by personal experiences such as encouragement to eat, exposure to a food, family customs and rituals, advertising, and personal values. But it mostly comes down to what resources are available to you in your area and what your family is used to preparing (like a tradition).Every individual has unique likes and dislikes concerning foods. Forcing an individual to eat sweet and cold substance who is usually accustomed to pungent and hot substances would not give the satiety of eating food for him and could produce indigestion and ama.Someone who is repeatedly exposed to certain foods is less hesitant to eat them. For example, fish traditionally was only available on the coasts, and is much more likely to be accepted as food by coastal dwellers. People who eat “veggie-sandwiches” made from mashed beans, pureed vegetables, or soy and people on diets may eat a sandwich made from lean turkey. These are appropriate cultural substitutions, but a sandwich made from horsemeat would be unacceptable. ªª The three Doshas or the forces in the body can easily go out of balance since the human body and nature are in a state of continuous change. Restoration of health = balance of all the doshas. When any of the three doshas is excessively agitated or increases, an imbalance is created, they go out of balance and disease sets in. This imbalance may be due to excessive or deficient use of or misuse of the five senses organs the ears, eyes, skin, tongue and www.bangalorehealthtv.com

nose as well as the body, mind, action, speech and time of year or season. Utilisation of drugs and diet and regimes having unwholesomeness for the normal tissue elements and bioenergy’s of the body are in fact opposed to the proper growth of such elements and the doshas – bioenergy’s. E.g. Eating ice cream by a person who is suffering from cold can aggravate his cold and complicate his disease process and severity. Mode of preparation drugs and diets which when prepared in a particular way produce poisonous effects meat of peacock roasted on a castor spit . We now have developed an affinity to out of state cuisines like Tandoor chicken. What we don’t realize is that the process by which it is prepared could be quite harmful. Uncooked chicken is marinated for up to 8 hours in curd before it is cooked in the tandoor oven. Curd produces strong opposing food properties when combined with chicken meat. Potency: substances having cold potency with those of hot potency some food combinations end up being toxic and harmful during digestion. Those are called contradictory food. This brings us to the topic of ‘Garam’. ‘Garam’ is a term used to describe the combination of toxic elements. Body parts of different insects, ashes of opposing medicines and mild toxic substances combined, form ‘Garam’. This was known to possess unexplained power. In olden times ’Garam’ was used to destroy enemy kings and women used them to keep men under their control. ‘Garam’ does not cause death instantly, although it can cause numerous problems by manifesting a variety of painful and irritating afflictions. Acharyas have given us guidelines to recognize such problems as well as solutions to overcome them. Ayurveda classifies kosta or competence of the stomach based on bowel movement can bring diseases if diet and food are not applied depending on the strength of the kosta .It is classed into three type’s .A person unable to digest heavy oily foods has stools which are watery and pale .Even intake of milk leads to loose motions. He is classed as one having a mild kosta. People who have normal bowel movement rarely have constipation or loose stools. The stool is well formed and this type is the ones having madyama kosta – moderate kosta. To a person having hard, constipated bowel movement once in 2 to 3 days a strong purgative is needed for bowel movement. This person is called as a krura kosta. Ayurvedic constitution says that nature of kosta is the one of primary factor decidingthe efficiency of digestion and metabolism .Administration of a mild purgative in a small dose for a person of costive bowel and administration of strong purgative for persons having laxed bowels produces contradictory effect on the individual. Consuming food without considering the state of health also can produce adverse reactions on the

body .For eg when an individual is exhausted after , sexual act and physical exercise his wind bioenergy which has aggravated needs to be calmed down by intake of food which is unctuous ,nourishing and warm. If he takes food or activity which is dry, light, cold and rough vata bioenergy instead of getting pacified further aggravates and can be cause of diseases. Similarlyif an individual taking heavy, unctuous food after sleep or when in a state of drowsiness will naturally make kapha energymore lethargic and can be a cause fordiseases. ªª Order of intake of food can also produce contradictory effects on the body. ifa person takes food before his bowel or urinary bladder are clear or when he does not have appetite or after his hunger has been aggravated such type of food becomes contradictory to the body .It is important to have a bowel movement everyday so that the body can get rid of waste from food and fluids . New food and fluids will then be able to move through the gastro intestinal tract and supply the body with the necessary nutrients. The idea to make sure you have to eatis to give your body energy – the physical energy. People sometimes may eat because there is more food on the table or because they are tired, sad or bored. Our body needs energy from food every 4 to 5 hours once. To take a hunger check answer the following questions 1. Has it been few hours since you ate? If it is more than 4 hrs. you are possibly hungry. 2. After drinking a glass of water, ask yourself if you are still hungry If drinking a glass of water makes you feel better it’s time to realise that you were just thirsty and not hungry . 3. Does drinking a glass of milk or eating a piece of fruit or any food help you feel better? That means to say you are physically hungry. ªª Proscriptions and prescriptions given by your physician have to be considered to maintain your health. For eg if you are given a diet of pork, Intake of hot things after pork which is naturally hot is not favourable to your treatment and will not produce the desired effect of treating the disease or if you are prescribed ghee as a part of the treatment, taking cold thing after ghee which naturally is cold will act adversely. ªª Cooking – called as pakavidhi is preparing food in the right manner. Preparing food with rotten fuel, under cooking, over cooking or burning during the process of preparationwill not nourish the body. when cooking, it’s best to use relatively low temperature methods wherever possible and limit your intake of char-grilled meats and foods. Low temperature cooking methods include steaming, boiling, poaching, stewing, casseroling, braising, baking, stir-frying, microwaving or roasting. Burnt or barbecued foods – a group of carcinogenic substances called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be produced if foods are overheated or burntconsidered a significant cancer risk

Certain food combinations have an adverse effect on the body EgFish should not be taken with milk because though both of them have a sweet taste they have a contradiction in their potency; fish is hot andmilk is cold. This contradiction vitiates the blood and obstructs the channels of circulation. There is bound to be constipation and diseases related to blood and even death. When there is obstruction of the channels of circulation toxins are produced (ama visa) due to improper digestion as well as metabolism. Similar such combinations include Meat of domestic animals, marshy animals and aquatic animalwhich should not be taken with honey, sesameseeds, sugar candy, milk, masha – Udad dhal, radish, lotusstalk, or germinated grains. Ayurvedic classics say that this combination can affect the sense organs and can cause deafness, blindness, trembling, and loss of intelligence, loss of voice /nasal voice, and even death. Taking vegetables like lotus stem or meat of dove , fried in mustard oil ., together with honey and milk obstructs channels of circulation , dilatation of the blood vessels and can lead to diseases like Epilepsy, shankaka –(severe headache) acute pain in the temporal region . Radish, garlic, drumsticks, all types of tulsi (occimum gratissimum or occimum sanctum) should not be taken with milk. This combination being contradictory can be a cause forobstinate skin diseases including leprosy. Taking ripe fruits of nikuca - Artocarpuslakoocha with honey and milk causes’ loss of strength, complexion, semen, sterility and other serious types of diseases further it could be the cause ofdeath. Neither should the ripe fruits of nikucha be taken with soup of masha ---- udad dhal, and sugar candy. The contradictory effect of this combination affects the lymph glands in the neck and gives rise to Scrofula --A form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes, rohini --diphtheria or can even be a cause ofdeath. Upodika --Basellara brabasale / the spinach prepared with the paste of tila –sesame seeds, causes diarrhoea. Meat of a crane either with varuni type of wine or kulmasha paste of barley mixed with hot water and slightly boiled so as to make a cake if consumed with gheecould trigger diseases because they are mutually contradicting Other examples of contradictory foods are milk and Jackfruit, milk and fish. Grains with lotus stalk, /Udad Dal, molasses, milk and honey mixed with curd are also considered to be contradictory food combinations. Some other contradictory food combinations are banana with curd or butter milk, honey or molasses mixed with wonder berry.

If milk is mixed with sour fruits or pulses, it changes into contradictory food. Fruits like mango ,Indian hog plum /wild mango (amrataka –spontandiaspinnnata ,ambtekayi) - orange, Carissa karandas(karonda) a type of a berry, lemon , jujube fruit, Tamarind, meat of pigeon, Jack fruit ,coconut, Pomegranate, goose berry , such other solid and liquid materials which are sour in taste become contradictory when taken with milk. Similarly kangu fox tail millet called as navane in kannada ,kidney beans called as mataki in kannada, Horse gram , Udad dhal Cow pea when taken with milk are mutually contradictory. Some type of wines taken with honey is unwholesome and aggravates doshas esp. vata bioenergy. Meat of hartala bird fried with mustard oil is unwholesome and they aggravate pitta Paysa --Kheer when taken with mantha -- thin gruel is unwholesome as they aggravate doshas especially kapha Meat of peacock roasted on a castor spit if burnt with castor wood fuel with castor causes instantaneous death. Meat of haridra roasted on a turmeric spit and burnt with the fuel of turmeric fuel or when mixed with ashes of dust and honey causes’ instantaneous death .Hot honey or intake of honey by a person afflicted with heat causes death. Do not cook wonder berry in utensils in which fish has been prepared. Three substances not to be used in excess are pippli-piper longum ,alkali and salt. Butter kept in bronze utensils for many days also violates the contradictory food rule. Payasa, alcoholic beverages and curd rice should never be used together. Honey, butter, oil and water should not be mixed together in equal proportions or in any proportions of the same. Mushroom should not be cooked in mustard oil, and sesame seeds should never be cooked with spinach. ªª To call a food palatable means that it is pleasing or agreeable to the palate or taste of an individual. Palatability is not static: it is always changing, based on the state of the individual, especially in regards to the time of food consumption. Palatability also is not something that is permanent. People can acquire a taste for certain flavours, and some flavours may actually become less palatable over time. A food with a high level of palatability provides a person with an intense sense of pleasurable satisfaction. The sensations these foods create while being eaten activate the pleasure centre in the brain. This often leaves a person wanting more because the experience was so enjoyable, and some may develop cravings for particular dishes. To a certain extent, the level of www.bangalorehealthtv.com

palatability that an individual perceives depends on personal preference of food. When he eats this type of food in moderate quantity he does not have any adverse effect. But if he over eats just because a particular food agrees with his palate, then it starts acting as a contradictory food and can lead to diseases. Richness of quality of food also produces effect on our body .Intake of substances which are not matured over matured or putrefied.Even animals like gorilla donot go for green or yellow bananas… they are too firm and the stem won’t break off very easily. Instead they choose the spottiest and blemished bananas that fall right off the bunch, that are easily peeled, and have a very sweet taste! When someone consumes an unripe piece of fruit it may taste extremely sour… And because of the high acidity it can cause an upset stomach, constipation, and/or bloating. Eat too much unripe fruit and you’ll also be battling dental problems. Too put it plain and simple, never eat a piece of fruit that tastes like alcohol or is unnaturally black inside. Rules of eating mentioned in Dinacharya – Daily schedule in Ayurvedic classics, play a very important role in every body’s life. One should eat only that food in proper quantity which is hot, unctuous and not contradictory even in potency and after the digestion of the previous meal .Food should be taken in a place equipped with all accessories without talking and laughing and with concentration of mind and paying due regard to oneself. Taking meals in public is not encouraged. One should take warm food because it is not only delicious but activates the enzymes in the abdomen to break down the food for easy assimilation and helps indigestion.Digestion kicks in once the food reaches the stomach. Warm food helps the nervous energy in the stomach - the powerful muscles that churn food continuously, essentially beating the contents to a pulp and the detachment of kapha bioenergy. Food should be unctuous because it is this type of food which is not only delicious but activates the subdued power of digestion .Downward easy facilitation strengthens the sense facilities promotes strength and brings out the brightness of complexion. These days the emphasis is placed on just feeding the children with any tasty food, for the mental satisfaction of watching them grow fast. No thought goes into the side effects of unhealthy food or contradictory food combinations. Just as pillars support a house, nutrients from food support all the vital functions of the body including sex, sleep etc., and also the elaborate functions of the brain. The rich as well as the middle class have a refrigerator at home. Along with fruits and vegetables, cooked food also finds a place in the fridge. When children come home from school the food is reheated and served. The

mother is not aware about the dangers involved in doing so. According to the science of opposing food, it is not safe to reheat and consume food that has already been cooked. Lately diseases like Leukoderma and Arthritis are steadily on the rise. Many suffer from stiffness and muscular pain which restrict free movement of hands and legs. Eventually it can even affect the valves of the heart. There are many other diseases that arise from using contradictory foods, but unfortunately people don’t realize this. A client of mine a lady found it difficult to eat because of the cough that prevented her from swallowing the food. A detailed medical investigation revealed a mass in the oesophagus which blocked the passage of food. Her doctors recommended an invasive surgery. She got scared of surgery and consulted me for my opinion. While studying her food habits, I found out that she regularly took curd and fish curry together. I told her never to consume fish along with curd, and as a treatment she took shaman aushadis like Bhallataka vati with ‘VarunadhiKasha yam’ one hour prior to meals. After 3 months she started feeling better and was asked to take an X-ray. The result showed that the growth in her throat had completely vanished. Now she leads a healthy life. This is a good example of the damage which contradictory foods can cause. There was another client of mine who had a history of taking a glass of warm milk before going to bed at night. At some point he started getting stomach ache, difficulty to breathe which disrupted his sleep. He tried different types of treatment. When nothing worked he came to me. When I asked him about his food habits, I learned that he regularly took heavy meal with curds for dinner. The hot milk that is of opposing nature to curds was creating the problem for him. When his diet was corrected his problem also subsided. Whenever contradictory food is consumed knowingly or unknowingly, it will cause indigestion and gas in the stomach along with constipation. This is a basic consequence of all contradictory food combinations. The safe thing to do during such a situation is to induce vomiting , use purgatives to promote easy bowel motility, use of antidotes and using prophylaxis. If the symptoms are mild, home remedies to treat the symptoms can also be used. For severe problems taking help of medications to correct the problem and revising the diet and lifestyle helps relieve the existing problem. Developing a strong immune system is of paramount importance.Everybody needs to be concerned about food which alters the balance of minerals in the body; like when contradictory food combinations become functionally toxic within the body. When strength and vigour diminish in the body, it will certainly be vulnerable to diseases. So to Keep the body strong and fit and to yield premium benefits it is ideal to follow the recommendations that the Acharyas have written down many years ago.. All the treatment systems basically converge to the same by following two methods; i.e prevention of disease or initiating healing procedures after disease strikes. Ayurveda considers prevention of disease as the best solution for a healthy life. [Prevention is better than cure]

Manipulation is the act of deceiving someone into doing something they might not otherwise do, ¾¾ Some more guidelines to motivate yourself: ªª Fix your goal but the road map i.e., the guidelines must be flexible. ªª Always set a deadline to finish any task. ªª Follow the principle of ‘Divide and Conquer’. Don’t look into the goal as one big one, but divide it into steps and accomplish it step by step. ªª Motivation to succeed is a more powerful tool than your knowledge or training. ªª World famous motivational writer Napoleon Hill said “The great master key is nothing more or less than the self discipline necessary to help you take full possession of your own mind. Identify the most common de-motivators: uncertainty, fear of failure, anger, ficklemindedness, lack of enthusiasm and bad in decision making. Steve Chandler said “Only challenge causes growth. profoundly significant that the only thing over which you have complete control is your own mental attitude”. You should have some fixed plan, if you don’t know where to go, how you will reach your destination. According to Walt Disney of Disneyland fame “If you can dream it. You can do it”. Don’t try to live upto other’s expectations but live upto your expectations. If you don’t get the opportunities, just create them. Remember: knowing and doing are as different as sleeping and acting. BELIEVE YOUR BELIEFS Whatever you trust and believe about yourself from the soul or the heart becomes your reality. The only measure of whether you sincerely overcome your difficulties is how firmly you believe in yourself. Accept yourself to be a valuable and worthwhile person in all respects. When you absolutely believe in yourself and your ability to succeed, nothing can prevent you from accomplishing your cherished wish. As Swami Vivekananda said, “Stand up, be bold and strong. Have faith in yourself. Know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succour you need is within you. All powers are within you; you can do anything and everything. The most important thing for you is to believe in that. We are the children of the Almighty; we are sparks of the infinite divine fire. How can we be nothing? The idea of faith in ourselves is of the greatest help to us. Throughout the history of mankind, great men and women have had their faith in themselves”. The man who has practiced control over himself cannot be acted upon by anything from outside us, there is no more slavery for him. Belief in ourself is the greatest source of strength. To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe. Abraham Lincoln said, “Let us have faith that, right makes might and in the faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it”. Do not attempt to do a thing unless you are sure of yourself, but do not relinquish it simply because someone else is not sure of you. soul within us, faith in life and in our fellow soul. Without faith, the plus quality, we cannot really live. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Faith is not a delicate flower which would wither under the slightest stormy weather. Faith is like the Himalayan Mountains, which cannot possibly change. No storm can possibly remove the Himalayan mountains from their foundation”. Faith will turn any course, light any path, relieve any distress, bring joy out of sorrows, peace out of strife, friendship out of enemity, heaven out of hell. That man alone acquires strength of body and soul and attains happiness whose heart is free from suspicion and is filled with faith. Faith is the only key to the Universe. The final meaning of human existence and the answers to the questions on which all our happiness depends cannot be found in any other way. As per Sir William Osier, “Nothing in life is more wonderful than faith - the one great moving force which we can neither weigh in the balance nor test in the crucible”. William Shakespeare said “There are no tricks in plain and simple faith”. It’s amazing what you can achieve if you believe you can achieve it. Those who do not have any hope to achieve has already lost the race. Try to understand yourself it helps to know your attitudes and to assess your strengths and recognize your weakness. As per Charles Dickens, “Youth is the period of building up of habits, hopes and faiths”. To accomplish great things you must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe. To think a thing impossible is to make it so. Courage is victory, timidity is defeat. All things are possible to him that believeth. Never give up. It is wise and always better to hope than despair.
Let faith and hope be the steering and gear of your vehicle of success. To be failure proof, you must possess an unconquerable faith, wholly consistent towards the goal, a will surrounded to a cause greater than yourself. When you imagine yourself accomplish a goal in your dream, you begin to believe that you can accomplish it practically in real life too. Believe and it can be done. Believing in a solution paves the way to solution, Trust the sun; don’t trust the shadows. Believe in your dreams; don’t believe in thoughts of despair. Have faith in your faith; yet doubt your doubts. In fact, it is through your beliefs that you create the very world you live in. Beliefs are latent, but powerful forces buried deep in the confines of your mind. Faith works like a magic. It looks beyond all limitations, crosses all boundaries, crosses any hurdle and helps you to reach your goal. So have faith in your ability, determination, will¬power and to march ahead till you achieve your goal.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women around the world, and CAD is the most common type of heart disease. CAD occurs when arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked, leading to chest pain or shortness of breath and increased risk of heart attack. As many as 45 million coronary artery disease cases have been diagnosed in India in 2010 alone and the figure is expected to go up to 60 million by 2015. ¾¾ About Abbott’s Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold Abbott’s Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS),, similar to a small mesh tube, is designed to open a blocked heart vessel and restore blood flow to the heart. It is referred to as a scaffold to indicate that it is a temporary structure, unlike a stent, which is a permanent implant. The scaffold provides support to the vessel until the artery can stay open on its own, and then dissolves naturally. Abbott’s BVS leaves patients with a vessel free of a permanent metallic stent and may allow the vessel to resume more natural function and movement, potentially providing long-term benefits.45 Abbott’s BVS delivers everolimus, an anti-

DNA GENE THERAPY FOR HYPERTENSION AND DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Dr.Agarwal Hospitals and Gene Research Foundation from Bangalore has prevented and treated hypertension and diabetic retinopathy over a span of over 9 years about 12000 patients through DNA GENE THERAPY. One in three adults worldwide, according to the report, has raised blood pressure – a condition that causes around half of all deaths from stroke and heart disease. One in 10 adults has diabetes. DNA – GENE THERAPY practiced by DR.AGARWAL HOSPITALS for the last decade has proved successful in treating most of the common known medical ailments and also rare genetic disorders. The process involved is minimally invasive, where one drop of the patient’s blood is enough to get his or her DNA profile and is used as the raw stock of giving the patient back their own fetal or healthy DNA. This young DNA has the capacity to regenerate any defective DNA sequencing in the body thereby regenerating the diseased organ and removing the ailment in total. Dr.Agarwal Hospitals proposes to diversify into pharmaceutical market by the way of bulk producing its Mana – DNA Gene therapy formulation and already is in talks with multinational companies to export and market the product overseas. Dr.Agarwal Hospitals and Gene Research Foundation are in the service of medicine for over 100 years and 4 generations. A product for gene therapy has gone through 20 years of research with over 12000 patients clinically successful for 9 years. You may already know of the benefits of stem cells which is on the cellular level. Gene therapy is on the molecular and cellular level, using the patient’s own blood as raw stock, in one drop of blood every cell

becomes the patient’s own stem cell, and makes the patient’s own healthy fetal DNA. This is then reinjected to the patient within seconds, the course consists of 10 injections, in 10 days, where the patient and doctor can report objective and subjective improvements. Gene therapy can be used for a variety of ailments ranging from congenital errors, diabetes, blindness, heart attack, cancer, infections to anti-aging. OBESITY ANOTHER MAJOR ISSUE “In every region of the world, obesity doubled between 1980 and 2008,” says Dr Ties Boerma, Director of the Department of Health Statistics and Information Systems at WHO. “Today, half a billion people (12% of the world’s population) are considered obese.” The highest obesity levels are in the WHO Region of the Americas (26% of adults) and the lowest in the WHO South-East Asia Region (3% obese). In all parts of the world, women are more likely to be obese than men, and thus at greater risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. ¾¾ DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Means damage of the retina caused by complications of diabetes, and leads to eventual blindness. 80% of diabetics have this ocular disease after 10years of diabetes. However 90% could be reduced by proper treatment and prevention. ¾¾ SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ªª Diabetic retinopathy often has no early warning signs, a person with macular edema is likely to have blurred vision, making it hard to do things like read or drive. In some cases, the vision will get better or worse during the day. ªª Ocular hemorrhage is seen when blood vessels rupture and blur vision is noticed by the patient. The first time vision blurs it will leave a few specks of blood in the eye, noticed as FLOATERS in the patients vision. ªª This is often followed by greater leakage of blood and within months to years the vision is completely lost. The large hemorrhages tend to happen more than once during sleep. ¾¾ PATHOGENESIS (REASON) Diabetic retinopathy is the result of microvascular retinal changes due to increase glucose in the blood vessel leading to intramural pericyte death and thickening of the basement membrane leading to incompetence of the vessel walls. These damages change the formation of the blood retinal barrier and also make the
AYURPHARMA

retinal blood vessels leak. The pericyte of cells of the blood vessel death is caused when hyperglycemia persistently activates protein kinase C-5 (PKC-5) and p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) to increase the expression of previously unknown target of PKC-5 signaling. Along with SHP-1, a protein tyrosine phosphatase leads to PGDF receptor dephosphorylating and a reduction in downstream signaling from the receptor resulting in pericyte apoptosis or cell death. Small blood vessels as those in the eye are especially vulnerable to poor blood sugar control. ¾¾ RISK FACTORS All people with diabetes mellitus are at risk – those with Type I diabetes and those with Type II diabetes. The longer a person has diabetes, the higher the risk of developing some ocular problem. Between 40 to 45 percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy. After 20 years of diabetes, nearly all patients with Type I diabetes and >60% of patients with Type II diabetes have some degree of retinopathy; however, these statistics were published in 2002 using data from four years earlier. Prior studies had also assumed a clear glycemic threshold between people at high and low risk of diabetic retinopathy. However, it has been shown that the widely accepted WHO and American Diabetes Association diagnostic cutoff for diabetes of a fasting plasma glucose ≥ 7.0 mmol/l (126 mg/dl) does not accurately identify diabetic retinopathy among patients. ¾¾ MANAGEMENT World over it has been seen that people with advanced retinopathy can also have a 90% chance of retaining their vision when three major treatments are used. ªª LASER TREATMENT ªª INJECTIONS OF GENE THERAPY, STEROIDS OR ANT-VEGF INTO THE EYE ªª VITRECTOMY SURGERY Avoiding tobacco use and correction of associated hypertension are important therapeutic measures in the management of diabetic retinopathy. The best way of addressing the condition is to monitor it vigilantly and achieve normal blood sugar levels. ¾¾ HERBAL PREVENTION But isn’t it better to take a fruit or a vegetable
instead of medicines? Having bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach has proved to prevent diabetes. If you are too stubborn or enjoy eating bitter gourd, then you could make stuffed Karela (Bitter gourd) or fry them like chips and have them as a snack. This will not just bring a change in your menu and give a respite to your taste buds, but also be beneficial to your health. ªª Soak a few seeds (1/4 tsps.) of Methi in water overnight. First thing after you brush your teeth in the morning, gulp down the Methi along with the water. fruit is ªª Jamul considered as an effective medicine for diabetes considering its effect on pancreas. The seeds too can be dried, powdered and had with water twice a day. ªª The guava is among those fruits that are available in most times of the year. With its vitamin C property and high fiber content, this is perhaps one fruit that diabetics can fearlessly have. However, a recent study has shown that having guava with its skin can heighten the blood sugar levels, so make sure you peel off the skin before consumption. ªª Gooseberry/Amla juice too cuts the blood sugar levels. If you can’t do without sugar in your coffee or tea, try and substitute honey. FIGHT INSOMNIA
AN AYURVEDIC WAY
Sleep is a physical and mental resting state of a person. During sleep, one becomes inactive and will not be aware of the surrounding environment and senses do not respond to the external stimuli. According to Ayurveda, sleep has both beneficial and harmful effects depending on sleeping time and duration. A good sleep nourishes body and strengthens, increases memory power, knowledge, virility and longevity whereas, untimely and insufficient sleep leads to unhealthy conditions and reduces longevity. ¾¾ Duration of Sleep
The amount of sleep you need depends on your mind-body constitution or body type. People with Kapha constitution need the most sleep - about eight or nine hours in order to feel rested. Pittas are next, with a need of seven to eight hours. Vatas can manage with six to seven hours of sleep. Your requirements of sleep also depends on what stage of life are you in. Babies can sleep as much as 15 or 16 hours out of every

24. Children frequently sleep 10 hours or more. At the other extreme, elderly people rarely enjoy a sound, unbroken sleep of more than four or five hours. ¾¾ Benefits of good sleep 6-7 hrs of sleep is necessary for a healthy body and mind. People who sleep less than 6-7 hours are at the risk of developing diseases. The benefits of sleep are as follows ªª It keeps us fit and healthy ªª Reduces stress, calms mind and helps in overcoming depression. ªª Good sleep helps to overcome diseases causing pain and inflammation ªª 6-7 hours of sleep boosts memory power and increases alertness. ªª It relaxes and makes us refreshing Insomnia It is a general term describing difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Insomnia can have many different causes, including psychological stress, a poor sleep environment, an inconsistent sleep schedule, or excessive mental or physical stimulation in the hours before bedtime. Also termed as Nidraanasha in Ayurveda is said to be caused due to uncomfortable bed, over work schedules, excessive physical exercise, old age diseases, mental exertion such as stress and anxiety and sometimes by nature like vata prakriti people. Insomnia, apart from causation of the diseases, also disturbs the quality of life and thereby leading to imbalance in our health. Therefore it becomes very necessary to treat insomnia before it conquers us.

@Footworks: finest foot reflexology chain
@Footworks, India’s finest footreflexology chain has launched in Bangalore with 5 branches ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª ªª
@Footworks, is India’s finest foot reflexology chain. Having begun operations in 2012, with technical tie-up from SUTL Corporation- Singapore, one of the largest business houses in Singapore, @Footworks has already grown to six branches with presence in two cities. Operating from some of the niche areas in Bangalore, @Footworks is the only place where authentic Chinese reflexology is practiced. At the helm, driving the @ Footworks name is a group of professionals who were working together in Getit Yellow Pages, with rich experience and expertise in their respective fields. ¾¾ What is Reflexology and How Does It Work? Foot Reflexology is a traditional Chinese therapy, which applies the principles of acupressure on the foot, for the overall health & well being of an individual. The manipulation of pressure points in your feet to help relax, stimulate and reduce stress to organs, glands, and other parts of the body. It is believed this type of stimulation can help alleviate and prevent various conditions. The points that are pressed are called reflex points. There are reflex points for every part of your body on your hands and feet. No matter where your discomfort, there is a reflex point on your feet and hand where pressure can be applied to relieve the symptoms. Foot reflexology is based on the principle that the foot is like a chart of the body: divided into ten reflex zones, it is a mirror image of the body. A look at the reflexology chart will make you understand that each reflex zone corresponds to a part of the body. The deeply relaxing nature of reflexology allows the body to release tension and stress that can build with everyday life. It is proven that stress can have a negative impact on our body’s ability to function at optimal levels. It is not a replacement for other treatments, but when used in conjunction with them, it is a recipe for relief. ¾¾ Benefits of Foot Reflexology: Some of the most acknowledged benefits of Foot Reflexology being: ªª Reduce stress and induce relaxation ªª Improve the circulation of both blood and lymph ªª Provide a more efficient removal of toxins and impurities

and treating the root cause of disease rather than simply suppressing its symptoms. The ICAM Wellcare Clinic is established in India by Dr.Irfana Akther MBBS MAHM (UK) a leading Medical Doctor who specializes in International Complementary Alternative Medicine. The clinic provides high quality care to clients from all over the world, Whilst dedicated to achieving outstanding results with fast recovery times, Dr Irfana Akther is passionate about the long term well-being of her clients. She ensure that her patients are fully informed at all stages and that they are given realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved. Her mission is to spread awareness about the “do no harm” philosophy of medicine and introduce people to the many old and new non-surgical therapies. ¾¾ What ICAM does? Promoting Good Health. The emphasis in alternative medicine is promoting good health and prevention of disease. With alternative medicine, an individual is using natural treatments to build up the immune system to fight off infection and diseases. The purpose is to stimulate the body’s healing process. Instead of trying to rid the body of a disease or symptom, the whole body is treated, and the cause is addressed. If there are underlying factors influencing your health, they will work to find the problem. Instead of using the same treatment for everyone with a common symptom, they try to find the hidden cause and treat it. Conventional Medicine is preferred in the treatment of trauma and emergencies, while Alternative Medicine excels in the treatment of chronic disease like Coronary Artery Disease, Cancer, Arthritis, Diabetes, Hypertension etc. Cardio Vascular disease and Diabetes being closely interrelated and middle aged being more prone to these chronic diseases, Dr Irfana gives their link and how ICAM treats them. Link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and alternative therapies: Cardiovascular disease is a major complication for people suffering from diabetes and also the leading cause of early death among diabetics. The cause of death among nearly 65 percent diabetics is heart disease and stroke. Research suggests that adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to suffer from heart disease or suffer a stroke when compared to those without diabetes. High blood glucose in adults with diabetes increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, angina, and coronary artery disease. People with type 2 diabetes also have high rates of high blood pressure, lipid problems and obesity which contribute to high rates of CVD. In addition, smoking doubles the risk of CVD in people with
42
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
diabetes. ¾¾ Action plan to lower the risk of CVD ÂÂ Reach and stay at a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke. ÂÂ Get at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity. Brisk walking or a similar activity through the week can help with weight loss and lower blood pressure. ÂÂ Eat foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars – choose lean meats, poultry, fish, nuts (in small amounts), fat free or low fat milk and milk products. Eat more fiber – whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dry peas and beans. ÂÂ Stop smoking – or ask your health care team for help to quit. Smoking is one of the major risk factors associated with heart attack and stroke. ¾¾ Alternative therapies for diabetic heart disease The rehabilitation program at ICAM involves a combination of EECP, Chelation, Ozone therapy and natural supplements. Diabetes and cardiovascular disease can be fully prevented using Complementary and Alternative treatments. Some of the best therapies, in addition to dietary changes, are chelation, ozone and EECP therapy. Chelation and Ozone therapy can help stabilize blood sugar levels and increase blood circulation. Patients with diabetic neuropathy, foot ulcers, or visionary impairment may need to undergo more aggressive treatment.
¾¾ What is EECP?
Enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) is a safe FDA approved Non-surgical outpatient basis medical therapy with incredible benefits for the cardiovascular system. EECP also called ‘Natural bypass’ This therapy is referred to as a ‘natural bypass’ because it enhances the body’s ability to create new pathways for blood flow around clogged arteries. EECP greatly accelerates the formation of tiny blood vessels called collaterals, helping restore healthy circulation to organs and tissues that have been deprived of blood and oxygen. A full treatment regimen consists of 35 sessions, undertaken once or twice a day over the course of a few weeks. Each treatment lasts about an hour, during which you can read, listen to music, or simply relax. ¾¾ Chelation therapy Chelation therapy is a non-surgical intravenous treatment which detoxifies the heavy metals, flushes the calcium plaque and reduces cholesterol from the arteries, thereby helping to reduce the threat of heart disease and stroke.

Through this technology, a high dose radiation is delivered to the target tumour, generally critically located, precisely and accurately without damaging the neighbouring tissues/organs in the shortest possible time. ¾¾ About Flattening Filter Free Mode (FFF) This involves removal of filter from the path of Radiation beam which will be usually there to filter the low energy beams. This FFF beam has high dose rate 2 to 4 times more than the regular beam, hence treatment time is drastically reduced. It is ideal for Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy, Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy where a high dose of radiation is used so that treatment time is reduced. It is used in the treatment of Brain tumors, benign conditions like blood vessel malformations, some tumors on important nerves in the brain, as an alternative to surgery in early lung cancers, localised metastasis in liver and spine, early prostate cancers, recurrent tumors etc,. ¾¾ Phenomenal Patient Benefits ÂÂ Fast, Precise Treatment ÂÂ Time of treatment, few minutes/session ÂÂ Safety ÂÂ Non invasive ÂÂ Painless ÂÂ Adds to patient comfort
