Personal and environmental hygiene Keep your nails cut short and clean them regularly. Always wash your hands before sitting for food or after visiting toilet. Avoid taking food in all kinds of places. Drink only boiled water. Never eat raw vegetables. Buy meat only from reputed sellers and cook it well. Keep your home surroundings clean. Do not allow stagnation of water. Wash your clothes, preferably at home. Diet and exercise ªª The more fat you have on your body, the more is the risk of straining your heart and developing diabetes. If you past ªª the age of 25, the only way you can know that you are putting on excess weight is to compare your weight against the figures of desirable weights given in Table, if your weight 20% more, you are obese. If you are over-weight, the only solution is to reduce your food intake. Any amount of exercise is not as good as reducing intake of food (rich in calories). If you spend more calories in work than what you take from food you will lose weight, if you take more calories than what you spend, you will gain weight, it is all a question of calorie balance. The Indian Council of Medical Research recommended allowances of foodstuffs to be taken by Indians are given in Table. Do not start on any dieting without consulting your Doctor and Dietician. MAINTAIN GOOD MANNERS PRINCIPLES OF COURTEOUS BEHAVIOUR Good manners make one perfect. It makes them adorable to friend, colleagues, and relatives-wherever one goes. And if we don’t know what good manners are all about, then we will face the trouble. Interestingly, most of us believe we have good manners already. However in reality, the more we hurry and the more we are stressed, the more manners are likely to slip. If we are honest, will admit to properly express gratitude for something when frazzled by life, or feeling a huge temptation to push in front of somebody doddery when rushing to catch a train. We should remember our own rules of manners, however rushed and fraught we feel. ¾¾ We should always make the effort to show these good manners. ªª Queuing without jostling

What is Gestational Diabetes? In some women, GDM occurs because the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the extra needs of pregnancy. In other women, overt diabetes may be found during the first trimester of pregnancy. In these women, the condition most likely existed before the pregnancy. A test called an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is used to diagnose GDM. An OGTT involves a blood test before breakfast, then again two hours after a glucose drink. ¾¾ How will you know if you have it?

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that arises during pregnancy (usually during the second or third trimester). However, babies of women who had blood glucose problems that were undiagnosed before pregnancy, have a higher risk of malformations, prematurity and associated complications. The degree of risk depends on how long blood glucose levels have been high and on how high the levels have been. ¾¾ What is the treatment? Often, blood glucose levels can be controlled by diet. You will be referred to a dietician who will advise you about- healthy eating. If your blood glucose cannot be controlled by diet, you may need insulin to treat your diabetes (this applies to about 10 - 20 per cent). ¾¾ Will it go away after your baby is born? Usually it does. Before you are discharged your blood will be tested to make sure the glucose levels have returned to normal. You should have a fasting blood test six weeks after your baby is born and then every year. If you took medication (insulin) during your pregnancy, you will be able to stop them after your baby is born. Women with GDM have a 70 per cent lifetime risk of developing Type 2 diabetes during their lifetime (compared to a ten per cent risk in the general population). About five to ten per cent of women with GDM develop Type 1 diabetes sometime in their life. These women have a slowly developing form of Type 1 that is ‘unmasked’ during pregnancy. ¾¾ Will gestational diabetes appear with other pregnancies? You are more likely to develop GDM again if you have had it in previous pregnancies, but, if you are overweight and lose weight, you may cut your risk of having GDM again. If you plan another pregnancy you should be offered the opportunity to self-monitor your glucose levels, with an OGTT at 16-18 weeks which will be repeated at 28 weeks if normal. ¾¾ Healthy lifestyle ªª Eat healthy food at regular intervals ªª Keep active ªª Manage weight ªª Avoid smoking ªª Reduce alcohol intake ªª Reduce stress

At the first appointment for your ante natal checkup you will be assessed for risk factors that can make you more likely to have gestational diabetes. These include: ªª Obesity ªª A family history of Type 2 diabetes (parent, brother or sister) ªª An unexplained stillbirth or neonatal death in a previous pregnancy, and/or ªª A very large infant in a previous pregnancy (4.5kg or over) ªª You have had gestational diabetes before ªª Your family origin is South Asian, Black Caribbean or Middle Eastern All women (irrespective of risk factors), who previously did not have the diagnosis of diabetes, are offered oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. ¾¾ How will it affect your baby? In most cases, Gestational diabetes comes to light during the second trimester of pregnancy. Since the baby’s major organs are fairly well developed at this stage, the risk to the baby is lower than for women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

How do you control a disease when a third of the people who have it, don’t even know it? That is the case with diabetes in our country. T

he risk of developing angina is directly related to a person’s blood sugar level. The higher the blood sugar in a person with diabetes, the higher that person’s risk of angina. Why are people with diabetes at treased risk for angina? People with diabetes are at higher risk of angina because elevations in blood sugar (glucose) can lead to damage inside blood vessel walls. This makes it easier for fatty deposits known as plaque to build up in artery walls, narrowing the § passage and causing blockages that can lead to heart attack or stroke. In addition, diabetes increases the likelihood of clot formation which can further block blood flow in the .artery. The risk also increases due to other factors that interact with diabetes. For example, the blood vessels in patients with diabetes are more susceptible to injury from other risk factors such as smoking, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Patients of diabetic autonomic neuropathy experience silent angina ¾¾ Symptoms of autonomic neuropath ªª Sweating ªª Decreased body temperature ªª Increased body temperature ªª Pallor ªª Blurring of vision

What is Kidney stones disease? In medical terminology, kidney stones are called Calculi, Usually they form inside the kidneys but they may appear on the bladder or ureter. These stones are formed because of the increase of Calcium, Phosphorous or Uric Acid salts. These salts will take the form of crystals and are stored on the inside layers of kidneys. Or because of urinary tract infection. These stones vary in size from a sand particle to a bigsized orange. When they remain there without any motion we don’t feel their existence nor any pain. But, whatever be the size, when it begins to move, internal living of ureter is affected and we feel immense pain. ¾¾ Symptoms ªª Unbearable pain starts from the lower part of the back and spreads to the abdomen. It may also reach from the scrotum to the reproductive organ. ªª As kidney stones move from the kidneys to the bladder, pain comes as if in waves. ªª The pain becomes very severe in a few minutes, remains there for a minute and subsides. But, again begins after a few minutes. ªª There can be vomiting sensation, vomits and fever also with shivering. ªª Pain while passing urine. ªª Pain in the lower part of the back and in the abdomen even if you touch them. ¾¾ How long will it take to form kidney stones? Small stones will form in one or two months, while it may take years to form big stones. ¾¾ Don’t neglect until your kidneys are damaged People with Kidney stone may like to get cured of their pain by injection and drugs. ªª When once the pain goes off, they forget about the disease for years and years. ªª Pain will be there when the stone travels from the kidney to the ureter. ªª If a stone there obstructs the flow of urine, pain will be experienced. Even if there is no pain, the uninary tract may get infected resulting in the kidney damage. ªª Therefore, when there are stones in the kidney, it is not enough if you take medicines for the relief of the pain, but, you should go for surgery or Lithotripsy. ¾¾ Reasons These stones are formed when the chemicals in the urine become concentrated or form into crystals. The reasons for this concentration are: ªª Genetic predisposition. ªª Foods with high quantity of calcium etc. ªª Big dose of Uric Acid in the urine because of some drugs — with Vitamin C or D. ªª Want of sufficient quantity of water consumed ªª Urinary tract infection ªª Profuse sweating in the case of people living in hot regions ªª Being bedridden for a long time ªª Sedentary life style (no physical labour) ¾¾ Complications Kidneys get damaged because of pus formation. ¾¾ Treatment ªª No treatment is needed if the stone is less than 5mm in size. It gets flushed out in urine. ªª If it is from 5mm to 10mm it cannot be flushed out.

10

OCTOBER

ªª

If it is more than 10mm., it should be removed by surgery or Lithotripsy. ªª Lithotripsy: Its location will first be noticed through X-rays and then High Energy Shock waves are focussed. It will take 1-3 hours. ªª In this process, the stone will disintegrate into small bits and they are flushed out in urine one by one. ¾¾ Surgery In surgery, doctor opens the kidney and removes the stone. But, the difficulty is, the kidney loses its power by 20% every time it is opened. There are some modern techniques like Ureteroscopy, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, Lithoclast and Lasers. ¾¾ Can kidney patients drink coconut milk? Coconut milk is very useful in curing urinary tract infections. ªª But it contains high percentage of potassium and therefore patients of kidney failure should not drink coconut water. ªª If potassium enters into the blood, it will lead to complications. ¾¾ Cares to prevent the formation of stones Drink plenty of water. This makes the urine thin and the concentration of salts will be avoided so that no stones are formed. Consume 2-3 liters of water a day and more in summer. 92% of kidney stones are due to Calcium concentration. Such of those who are prone to kidney stone formation should limit their Calcium consumption. Milk, butter etc., contain much Calcium. Some antacids contain more calcium. If you are suffering from kidney stone problem, and if you are taking antacids, see that they do not have calcium base. Consult the doctor and use another brand. ¾¾ Why frequent urination in rainy season? When it is raining, or in cold weather or in airconditioned rooms, you need to pass urine again and again. Do you know why? ªª Water is flushed out from our body in two ways: by kidneys through urine, by skin and lungs by sweating and breathing ªª In summer, more water goes out by sweat. ªª We don’t sweat much while raining or in cold weather. Some don’t sweat at all. So, water should go out by some other means and those other

OCTOBER

means are: By frequent urination Same condition with people sitting in airconditioned rooms. So, they frequent the toilet. ¾¾ Stones with uric acid In those with high percentage of uric acid in their blood, stones with uric acid will form. ªª They can stop the formation of uric acid stone by taking proper care in the consumption of foods and with drugs. ªª Mutton, liver in the mutton, kidney, brain contain more uric acid. Such people should not go for these foods. ªª So also fish, chicken, beans, custard apple, mushroom, alcohol too contain a lot of uric acid. Such people should consume these foods now and then only. ªª In spite of such precaution, if the uric acid in the blood does not come down, the only resort is by drugs. ¾¾ Guidelines  Whatever be the size of kidney stones, foods containing Vitamin A prevent their further formation. But, eat only natural foods with Vitamin A and not medicines.  If you don’t do any physical work, you have the danger of calcium concentration in your blood. Keep yourself engaged in some physical activity or exercise. Then the calcium will enter into the bones.  Kidney stone formation is related to the consumption of proteins. These proteins will increase the quantity of uric acid, calcium and phosphorous in the urine. Hence in some, stones will form in their kidneys.  If there are calcium stones, uric acid or cystine stones, reduce the protein quantity which you will get from non-vegetarian foods.  Vitamin C increases calcium oxalate stones and Vitamin D increases calcium in all parts of the body. So, consume these two vitamins with the advice of your doctor.  If you notice a stone while passing urine, show it to your doctor and get proper medication.

OBESITY Obesity is one of the major health problem which can be solved with the help of IN-XS, Anti aging and antiobesity Clinic There is an urgent need to educate the urban community on the aspects of healthy food habits and desired lifestyles to prevent overweight/obesity and its associated ill effects

AYURPHARMA

Web: www.carboxy.in, A body mass index (BMI) of more than 37 is morbid obesity. BMI is weight in kgs divided by height in meters squared. The condition is associated with significant health problems besides being a risk to one’s life itself. A morbid obese individual has twice the risk of dying compared to someone of his age with ideal weight. India is gaining weight. Traditionally known for malnutrition, Indians now report more and more frequently with overweight, obesity, and their consequences. Under nutrition is more prevalent in rural areas, whereas overweight and obesity are more than three times higher in urban areas Indians exhibit unique features of obesity: Excess body fat, abdominal adiposity, increased subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat, and deposition of fat in ectopic sites (such as liver, muscle, and others). Obesity is a major driver for the widely prevalent metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), although this phenomenon is a global one, India is unique in that it has to grapple with both over- and under nutrition at the same time. This article reviews the weight of the problem of obesity in India. Diseases associated with obesity: Any system in the body can be affected by obesity. The common ones are Diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, infertility, sleep apnea, heart attack and skin disorders. These individuals may also have psychological problems such as low self-esteem, low confidence and at times depression. Causes: The most important cause-is genetic. Certain individuals are predisposed to obesity. Diet, lifestyle and environment contribute to it. It is wrong to think that it the individual’s fault that he or she is morbidly obese. However it is a preventable

condition provided the tendency of an individual to put on weight is identified in the early stages. Expert medical advice at this stage can prevent this condition. Although anyone could put on excess weight, a study has identified that the incidence is highest amongst housewives in upper middle class families. With a rapidly expanding middle class in India, it is now known that every 3rd man and every 2nd woman is overweight. This translates to 50 million individuals in India who are overweight. A small percentage of these will be morbidly obese. The problem of diabesity: Obesity in type-2 diabetic patients is a very common phenomenon and often termed as “Diabesity,” Diabetes, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia are grouped under one name “Metabolic syndrome.” The rising prevalence of these lifestyle disorders in India is of concern as singly or in combination, which act as major risk factors for coronary artery diseases (CAD). Increased predisposition to diabetes and premature CAD in Indians has been attributed to the “Asian Indian Phenotype” characterized by less of generalized obesity measured by BMI and greater central body obesity as shown by greater WC and WHR. Many Indians fit into the category of metabolically obese, normal weight individuals. Despite having lean BMI an adult Indian has more chances of having abdominal obesity. The body fat percentage of an Indian is significantly higher than a western counterpart with similar BMI and blood glucose level. It has been hypothesized that excess body fat and low muscle mass may explain the high prevalence of hyperinsulinemia and the high risk of type-2 diabetes in Asian Indians,’ Focus on childhood obesity: Following the increase in adult obesity, the proportion of children and adolescents who are overweight and obese have also been increasing. The most important consequence of childhood obesity is its persistence into adulthood with all its health risks. The health risks include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, and some sex hormone-sensitive cancers. It is more likely to persist when its onset is in late childhood or adolescence. If the underlying causes of the obesity epidemic are not addressed, it has the potential to overwhelm health systems throughout the world. Mortality risk increases with increased weight of children. Globally, an “estimated 10% of school-aged children, between 5 and 17 years of age, are

OCTOBER

overweight or obese. In India, many studies have shown that the prevalence of overweight among adolescents varies between 10% and 30%. Low levels of physical activity, watching television, and consuming junk foods are associated with a higher prevalence of overweight- Thus, participation in household activities and regular physical exercise could help in lowering the prevalence of overweight. Therefore, the role of physical activity, games, and sports should be emphasized, and facilities should be provided for outdoor games in schools, with compulsory hours of sports and games. CONCLUSIONS Given the rapid rise in obesity in India, it is important to know the “weight of the nation.” Due to the long-term consequences, the cost burden of obesity on the health care system is enormous. A better understanding of the numbers and causes can help overcome barriers to the primary prevention of obesity for youth and adults let..; communities, medical care, schools, and workplaces. The INXS has woken up to the need to achieve a healthy weight, in order to ensure health of the-country. Innovative, yet simple and low-cost suggestions, such as yoga, meditation, and folk dance, can be used to maintain optimal weight of our country men and women. INXS anti aging and anti-obesity Clinique was pioneered by a young doctor couple Dr Keerthi Patel and Dr Sangeetha Patel. INXS is the first and only medical establishment treating solely obesity since the many years. So far thousands of patients have been treated here with nearly 80% success rates. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common condition which consists of irregular or absent periods, excessive body hair, obesity and slightly enlarged ovaries.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Gynecologic problems

Understanding ovaries and ovulation The ovaries are a pair of glands that lie on either side of the uterus. Each ovary is about the size of a large marble. The ovaries make eggs and various hormones. Ovulation (release of egg) normally occurs once a month. Before an ovum is released, it develops in a little swelling of the ovary called a follicle. Each month several follicles start to develop, but normally just one fully develops and goes on to ovulate. The main hormones that are made in the ovaries are estrogen and progestogen - the main ‘female hormones’, and are the main controllers of the menstrual cycle. The ovaries also normally make small amounts of ‘male1 hormones (androgens) such as testosterone. PCOS is a syndrome where at least two of the following occur, and often all three: At least 8-12 follicles (tiny cysts) develop in your ovaries. (Polycystic means ‘many cysts’) You do not ovulate each month . Some women with PCOS do not ovulate at all. (In PCOS, although the ovaries usually have many follicles they do not devevlop fully

have PCOS, over time you have an increased risk of developing diabetes, a high cholesterol level, and possibly high blood pressure. These problems in turn may also increase your risk of having a stroke and heart disease in later life, these increased health risks are due to the long-term insulin resistance (and also being overweight which is common in women with PCOS). PCOS are at higher risk of developing endometrial cancer. Tests needed: Tests may be advised to clarify the diagnosis, and to rule out other hormone conditions. Blood tests may be taken to measure certain hormones - FSH and LH (High LH) an ultrasound scan of the ovaries may be advised. This can detect the typical appearance of PCOS with the many follicles (small cysts) in slightly enlarged ovaries with increased stromal thickness. Serum insulin (high) and oral glucose tolerance test (altered) Treatment for PCOS ? There is no cure for PCOS. Treatment is basically tailored to the symptoms of the patient, You should aim to lose weight if you are overweight: Losing weight helps to reduce the high insulin level that occurs in PCOS. This then improves the chance of you ovulating, which improves any period problems, fertility and may also help to reduce hair growth and acne. The increased risk of long-term problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., is also reduced. Losing weight can be difficult. A combination of eating less and exercising more is best. Advice from a dietician and physiatrist may increase your chance of losing weight; we have a physiatrist next door for the same. Even a moderate amount of weight loss can help. Treating hair growth: Drugs to treat hair growth take 3-9 month to work fully and for their effect to be noticed. You need then to carry on taking them otherwise hair growth will recur. Things like waxing, shaving, electrolysis and laser might also help. Treating acne: The treatments used for acne in women with PCOS are no different to the usual treatments for acne. Treating period problem: Women with PCOS are advised to take the contraceptive pill as it causes regular ‘withdrawal bleeds’ similar to periods. If this is not suitable, another option is to take progestogen hormone for several days every month which will cause a monthly bleed like a period. ‘-• Fertility issues: The chance of becoming pregnant depends on how often you ovulate. Some women with PCOS ovulate now and then, others not at all. If you do not ovulate but want to become pregnant, then fertility treatments have a high chance of success. You are much less likely to become pregnant if you are obese. If you are obese or overweight then losing weight is mandatory in addition to other fertility treatments. Fertility chances can be increased by doing laparoscopic ovarian drilling, which is a day care procedure. Preventing long term problems: A healthy lifestyle is important to help prevent the ‘long-term problems’. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and lose weight if you are overweight or obese.

and so ovulation often does not occur). If you do not ovulate then you do not have a period. The balance of hormones that you make in the ovaries is altered. In particular, your ovaries make more testosterone (male hormone)than normal. Why do I develop PCOS? The exact cause is not clear. Several factors probably play a part. These include the following. Insulin: A raised level of in the bloodstream is thought to be the main underlying reason why PCOS develops. Insulin is a hormone that you make in your pancreas. The main role of insulin is to control your blood sugar level. Insulin acts mainly on fat and muscle cells which take in sugar (glucose) when your blood sugar level rises. Women with PCOS have ‘insulin resistance’ .This means that cells in the body are resistant to the effect of a normal level of insulin. Therefore, the level of insulin in the blood needs to be higher than normal to control the blood sugar level. Luteinising / hormone (LH): This hormone is also probably involved in causing PCOS. This hormone is secreted from pituitary gland. LH stimulates the ovaries to ovulate. It is assumed that a high level of insulin and a high level of LH work together to cause more testosterone than normal to be made in the ovaries. Hereditary factors: Your genetic makeup is probably important. One or more genes may make you more prone to develop PCOS. PCOS is not strictly inherited from parents to children, but it may run in some families Weight: Being overweight or obese is not underlying cause of PCOS. However, if you are overweight or obese it may make things worse, excess fat can make insulin resistance worse, which may than cause the level of insulin to rise even further. It also causes changes in female hormonal level so that you do not ovulate. However, PCOS may also be a contributing cause of overweight and obesity. What would one experience with PCOS? ªª Period problems -You may have irregular or light periods, or no periods at all. ªª Fertility problems- You may not ovulate each month, and some women with PCOS do not ovulate at all. PCOS is one of the commonest causes of infertility. PCOS women who do manage to become pregnant tend to have increased frequency of miscarriage. ªª Hair growth (Hirsutism) occurs in more than half of women with PCOS. It is mainly on the face, lower abdomen and chest. This is the only symptom in some cases. ªª Acne may persist beyond the normal teenage years. ªª Thinning of scalp hair: occurs in some patients. ªª Weight gain - women with PCOS are overweight or obese. ªª Depression or poor self esteem may develop as a result of the other symptoms. Symptoms typically begin in the late teens or early 20s. Not all symptoms occur in all women with PCOS. Symptoms can vary Possible long-term problem of PCOS: If you

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the name given to a group of conditions in which the optic nerve sustains damage where it leaves the eye. In many cases, this damage is associated with a rise in pressure within the eye. Surgery: An eye specialist may recommend surgery to help control Glaucoma through which the aqueous fluid can escape from within the eye and drain away under the loose covering of the eye (conjunctiva). irreversible damage has been done to the field of vision. ¾¾ Without treatment it can progress to complete blindness. A much less common form of Glaucoma, acute closed angle, starts with severe pain in the eye, headache, blurring of vision, halos around sources of light. This needs immediate treatment. Progressive loss of vision in open-angle glaucoma ¾¾ Who is at risk for Glaucoma? It is important for each of us, from infants to senior citizens, to have our eyes checked regularly, because early detection and treatment of glaucoma are the only ways to prevent vision impairment and blindness. This may apply to you if: You are 55 years & above and have not had your eyes examined regularly Someone in your family has a history of glaucoma Myopia (nearsighted) ¾¾ Diagnosing Glaucoma An annual eye examination is as important as a regular vision test. This examination will measure both the pressure within the eye, funduscopy (Cup/ Disc ratio) and the field of vision. These tests together are more effective in the detection of Glaucoma than the standard eye test alone. A regular test of the pressure within the eye can detect Glaucoma. (Tonometry) ¾¾ Treatment Although treatment can control Glaucoma, and possibly avoid or delay the need for surgery, sight loss cannot be recovered so early detection and treatment are vital. Most drug treatments aim to reduce the production or drainage of fluids in the eye. It is very important to use prescribed medication regularly and not to miss doses. Laser Treatment: If the condition cannot be controlled using medication, it may be necessary to have laser surgery. The drainage holes are opened using a laser beam and the pressure within the eye is then controlled with the appropriate medication.

Alcoholism an addiction to alcohol AYURPHARMA

Alcoholism refers to addiction to alcohol. It is a chronic disorder, in which a person is unable to refrain from frequent and excess consumption of alcohol for physical or psychological reasons. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed alcoholism as one of the three most deadly killer diseases of the 20th century. Alcoholism is also one of the serious social problems. It often brings poverty and certain amount of crime and results in material unhappiness and broken homes. It also leads to numerous traffic accidents. Alcohol is not a product found in nature. It results from decomposition and as such belongs to a family of poisons. Ethyl alcohol, the main intoxicating ingredient in wine, beer and distilled liquor is a toxic drug which depresses the brain and nervous system. Alcohol cannot be called a food for it enters the alimentary canal and is not changed or digested in any way. It is quickly absorbed in the bloodstream and then travels to every part of the body, adversely affecting vital organs like brain and

liver. ¾¾ Symptoms According to the WHO, “Alcoholics are those excessive drinkers whose dependence on alcohol has attained such a degree that it shows a noticeable mental disturbance or interference with their bodily or mental health, their interpersonal relations and their smooth social and economic functions, or who show the prodormal signs of such development “. Alcoholics have a puffy face with bloodshot eyes, a hoarse voice and a rapid pulse. They are suspicious, irritable and over emotional. Vomiting, delirium, impaired judgement and disturbed sleep are some of the other symptoms. The chronic alcoholic, who would rather drink than eat, fails to get enough vitamins. The few vitamins acquired by him are drained out of his system in the process of burning the alcohol in his body. Vitamin deficiency can lead to delirium tremors, convulsions, nutritious, disorders of the eyes and impaired memory. Excessive drinking often causes premature greying of hair due to vitamin deficiency. Chronic alcoholism results in a depletion of minerals in the body, particularly magnesium. Its lack produces symptoms like tremor of the hands, feet and tongue, convulsions, mental clouding and perspiration. Excessive drinking imposes a strain on the liver. It gradually destroys its functions and often causes cirrhosis of the liver. It leads to disorders of the stomach and bowels. It can cause brain damage as brain cells are often affected by it. Alcohol also affects the heart which becomes weak and flabby. ¾¾ Causes Alcoholism results from intemperate drinking. Sometimes it sneaks upon a person comparatively rapidly; other times, years may pass before a person becomes a fully fledged alcoholic. A weakminded person consoles himself by taking drugs or alcohol. In doing so he simply tries to escape the situation rather than face it boldly. A person generally takes to drinking as a means to enliven social life, to overcome anxiety or to induce sleep. He becomes an alcoholic if he gets dependent on alcohol physically and psychologically. He resorts to heavy drinking

OCTOBER

because of his maladaptive way of dealing with life’s stresses. ¾¾ Treatment The chronic alcoholic first of all must make a firm resolve to stop drinking. He should abstain from alcohol all at once for the habit cannot be got rid of in gradual stages. The most effective way to treat alcoholism is to build the body’s nutritional integrity soaps to prevent craving for stimulants like drinks. The patients should be put on a cleansing juice fast for at least ten days in the beginning. During this period, he should have juice of an orange every two hours from 8 am to 8 pm. The juice may be diluted with warm water, if desired. If orange juice does not agree, vegetable juices may be taken. Each day while fasting, bowels should be cleansed and the poisonous matter thrown off by the self cleansing process set up by the body. This can be achieved by warm water enema. During the juice fast, the patient will usually feel no craving for alcohol. This will give a good 10 day start towards breaking the drinking habit and would help remove not only the physical dependence but also the psychological factors. After the initial fast on juices, the optimum diet of vital nutrients is essential. Such a diet should consist of whole grains, cereals, nuts, seeds and sprouts, fresh fruits and vegetables. It is advisable that in the beginning of the treatment, the patient is given a suitable substitute to relieve the craving if and when such a craving occurs. The best substitute drink for alcohol is a glass of fresh fruit juice, sweetened with honey, if desired. In the alternative, wholesome candy may be taken. The patient should always have easily available juices, candy, or other snacks to be taken between meals if he feels a craving for a stimulant. All refined foods such as sugar, white rice, macaroni products and white flour and meat should be avoided. The patient should eat several small meals a day in preference to two or three large ones and avoid strong condiments such as pepper, mustard, and chilli. He should not smoke as this will only increase his desire for alcohol. Apples are considered valuable in the treatment of alcoholism as their use removes intoxication and reduces the craving for wine and other intoxicating liquors. The raw celery juice is also considered helpful. It has a sobering effect and is an antidote to alcohol. In addition to proper nutrition, plenty of rest and outdoor exercises are necessary. The healthy condition of the appetite centre, which controls the craving for alcohol is improved by exercise. Yogasans for general health such as padmasan, vajrasan, vakrasan, paschimotanasan, yogamudra, bhuajangasan, halasan and shalabhasana and yogic kriyas like jalneti, kunjal and simple Pranayamas like kapalbhati , anulomaviloma, shitali and sitkari will be beneficial. Copious drinking of water, hot fomentations on the stomach and abdomen with a wet girdle pack between applications are also effective water treatment for alcoholism.

Tinospora is grown in tropical regions of India and Sri Lanka. It is bitter in taste and astringent. Its pharmacological quality is due to alkaloids like cordifol, tinosporidine, tinosporide and others it contains. It is used to cure skin problems, fever, weakness, jaundice and diabetes. The piles problem can be controlled by eating this plant mixed with milk and thus, preventing bleeding and constipation. All that is bitter is not poison is what Tinospora teaches. It is bitter in taste but is like the Amrita in its healing qualities. There is a story describing its origin. During Ramayana when Sita was carried away by the demon King Ravana, Rama had to fight to get back Sita. Monkeys helped Rama in this venture. A large number of monkeys were killed in this war when Ravana was killed by Rama. On this occasion of celebration, Devendra sprinkled Amrita on all the dead monkeys to get them back to life. ÂÂ A case report: Suresh is a 16 year old boy. He had fever for more than 20-25 days continuously. In the beginning he used to get fever every 6 hours alternately. It gradually increased to 12 hours in the course of a week then it was daily. Doctors had performed all kinds of blood tests and administered antibiotics. But the fever didn’t come under- control. So they shifted to Ayurvedic system of medicine. After going through Suresh’s blood report it flashed to the doctor’s mind the effective drug for fever might be Amrutha balli. He was given 2 spoons of stem juice mixed with honey every day morning and evening. Within a week he was relieved of all signs and symptoms and started going to school. Hence the drug is called an ‘Indian Quinine’. ÂÂ In all kinds of fever, Amrutaballi acts as an effective drug. Using 2 spoons of stem juice mixed with honey before food three times a day is always effective. We may use dried stems when fresh ones are not available. But fresh stem is always more effective. STRESS MANAGEMENT Partha Bagchi Director Stammering cure center House # 145, 23rd cross, 12th main, Jayanagar 3rd Block East, Bangalore 11 Near to Jaya Nagar swimming pool Mob: 98860600037 “A person is said to be under stress when the number of demands made on him exceeds his ability to cope up with. We cannot single out any particular demand for which stress may occur. This demand differs very much depending upon the attitude, confidence level, mental strength and take-it-easy nature of the person. Stress occurs while trying to do more and more work in lesser and lesser time. In the modern world, it is impossible to lead a completely stress-free life. The more you bother and get disturbed about the different situations, you have to face a more stressful life. The American Medical Association defines stress as “any interference that disturbs a person’s mental and physical well-being”. “Stress is the body’s physiological response to pressure especially to events that seem threatening, challenging or involves a change” -Erica Brealey.

AYURPHARMA

So stress is inevitable in our rocket-paced age and it rules the modern world. But cultivate skills to reduce harmful stress and put stress to work for you and Lead a more relaxed, happy and fulfilling life

Definition given by Grant Banting, Noble Prize winner for medicine is “The body’s reaction to any sharp or sudden variation in the environment, especially when this makes increased demands upon it is stress”. According to Tim Hindle “Stress in individuals is defined as any interference that disturbs a persons healthy mental and physical wellbeing. It occurs when the body is required to perform beyond its normal range of capabilities”. ¾¾ Sources of Stress Modern living is increasingly stressful, more and more demands people to accomplish things in lesser time. Our society, working style, environment and daily life are constantly changing. The end result is tremendous increase in stress. ¾¾ Some of the specific causative factors for stress are ªª Demand of everyday life and major life changes like change of place, serious illness in the family, proper education of children, financial crises, clash among family members, separation or divorce, unemployment and insecurity. ªª Work related stress unsatisfied with work environment, tight pay -packet, boss, either underestimated or loaded with more responsibility, technical operational or cultural changes, pressure of losing position or job in the company amongst stiff competition, very poor working conditions, lack of adequate support from co-workers, etc. ªª Several stress related research studies have pointed out that human beings can stretch themselves to adopt any change but of-course within a permissible limit. But if everincreasing and continuous pressure is created on the employees to work more and perform better, it extends

30

OCTOBER

beyond the maximum stretchable limit beyond tolerance. For example, take a rubber band. It can stretch with force but snaps with too much force. Several stress induced problems start, specially on the health of the person. ªª Too much burden of work in the family, at work place and in social front creates a time-constraint making life stressful. ¾¾ Dangers of prolonged stress When anybody is under physical or psychological stress, the body releases an increased amount of stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. In a short period of time, it will help you to counteract the stressed situation. The body is alert to rise to the situation and prompt to take necessary action. But if it happens repeatedly and the stress is prolonged, then the stress hormones are continuously bombarding the body and can be extremely damaging for the entire body system in the long run. Once we know the possible dangers, we will develop consciousness to tackle the situation effectively. ¾¾ The dangers, both physical & psychological, are: ªª People under constant stress are likely to develop heart problems & consequently heart attacks. Those in the age group of 25-35 years and work always under constant pressure of fulfilling the targets and deadlines & hence also have the threat of heart attack. ªª Chronic stress is the root cause of cancer, arthritis, migraine, hypertension, insomnia and respiratory problems. ªª Severe stress can impair the body’s immune system as a resultant effect of chronic exhaustion and different illness. ªª The worst part of the thing is that in a stressful situation if the body is not physically active or can consciously unwind the situation, consequently these temporary happenings may turn into a permanent physical disability such as high blood pressure, diabetes, constant exhaustion and a handful of other health complications. ªª It may affect very seriously on the mental state of mind. Fortunately the body gives signals that you are stressed. If anybody ignores that signal and keeps on mounting more pressure on himself for a long time exceeding the body’s stretchable limit, then soon one may experience distress. ¾¾ Techniques and strategies to combat stress ªª Do one thing at a time: Take any particular work and do it at a time. Give your undivided concentration. Complete the work and enjoy finishing the work with satisfaction. Then turn on to the next work in the priority list. Multitasking, most of the time, will land up doing careless mistakes, unsatisfactory performance and is more time-consuming. ªª Be positive, act positive: Always talk positive and think positive. Optimistic people with positive view points are healthier and live longer. Look at the brighter side of everything. Look into every problem as a challenge to prove your worth. ªª Avoid procrastination: Procrastination is to compel oneself to postpone things to be done.

(80%) storage protein. The minor proteins of oats are prolamine and avenin. Oat protein is nearly equivalent in quality to soy protein, which World Health Organization research has shown is equal to meat, milk, and egg protein. The protein content of the hull-less oat kernel (groat) ranges from 12 to 24%, the highest among cereals. Nutritional value per 100 g (3.5 oz)

Oats, the traditional food of Scotland is known for its highly nutritious content and oodles of health benefits. The oat botanically known as Avena sativa comes from Poaceae family is a cereal grain grown for its seed. Oats, like rye, are usually considered a secondary crop, i.e., derived from a weed of the primary cereal that domesticates wheat and barley. Oats are generally considered a healthy food, being touted commercially as nutritious and is gaining popularity as an ‘ideal breakfast food’ across the globe today. Discovery of the healthy cholesterol-lowering properties has led to wider appreciation of oats as human food. Oats, which are the only grain referred to in the plural form, are the third largest crop in the United States. The first oatmeal porridge was known to be prepared by the Ancient Greeks. It is available in various forms such as whole oat groats, steelcut oats, rolled oats, oat bran, quick oats, oat flour, crushed oats, etc. ¾¾ CONTENTS ªª Oats provide one of the richest sources of the dietary soluble fiber beta-glucan, providing 5.0 gm (in oatmeal) and 7.2 gm (in oat bran) per 100 gms serving. ªª Oats also contain more lipids (5-9%) than other cereal crops and are rich in unsaturated fats, including the essential fatty acid, the linoleic acid. ªª Oats contain unique antioxidants called avenanthramides, as well as the vitamin E-like compounds like tocotrienols and tocopherols. ªª Oats are the only cereal containing a globulin or legume-like protein called avenalin as the major

VARIOUS FORMS OF OATS 1. Groats: The “whole grain” form of an oat is called as groats. 2. Steel-cut oats: are the whole groats chopped into several pieces. Steel-cut oats take longer time to cook and contain the most important nutrient like phytic acid and taste nuttier than conventional oats. 3. Rolled oats: are the steamed groats that have literally been rolled out and flattened, with the bran discarded. 4. Instant oats: are rolled, steamed, and precooked oats. They are essentially the same as rolled oats, often accompanied by sugary flavorings and rendered immediately edible

by the addition of hot liquid. 5. Oatmeal: is also known as white oats or ground oat groats (i.e. oat-meal, cf. cornmeal, peasemeal, etc.), or a porridge made from oats (also called oatmeal cereal or stirabout, in Ireland). ¾¾ HEALTHY BENEFITS OF OATS ÂÂ According to the research studies, evidence shows that the soluble fiber intake, in particular, is inversely related to CHD. (Pietinen, P., Rimm, E.B.,et al) Oats, a whole grain food, is one of the richest dietary sources of the soluble fiber beta-glucan and has been associated with a reduced risk for CHD. (Wolk, A., Manson, et al /Wood, P.J., Braaten, et al) ÂÂ Oats also possess an amino acid composition (low lysine to arginine ratio) which may also be cardioprotective. The lipid lowering effects of oats were first recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1997 after an extensive review of 42 clinical trials. This first food specific health claim states that “Soluble fiber from foods such as oat bran, rolled oats or oatmeal, and whole oat flour, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease”. The recommended intake for a cholesterol-lowering effect is 3 g of oat betaglucan per day. (Keenan, J.M et al) ÂÂ The consumption of a high carbohydrate diet rich in fiber may reduce insulin doses needed by diabetic patients. (Anderson, J.W. and Ward, K) Evidence from a 10-year prospective study demonstrated that the whole grain foods yielded a protective effect against diabetes in women. Analysis of individual whole grain foods showed that oats consumption alone also reduced the risk for diabetes onset. (Liu, S., Stampfer, M.J., et al) Soluble fiber from oats, when incorporated into a low-glycemic diet, can improve postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses in both non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and healthy subjects. (Brand, J.C., Colagiuri, S., et al/ Jenkins, D.J.A.,et al) More than 12 published studies reported that oats, consumed as oat bran, oatmeal, or isolated beta-glucans, reduce both fasting and postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels. ÂÂ The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) study demonstrated that a diet high in whole grains, fruit, vegetables and low fat dairy or restricted in fat lowers BP in hypertensive individuals. (Harsah D.W., Lin PH, et al) Dietary consumption of oats is consistent with the DASH recommendations, and may confer a benefit due to its fiber content. ÂÂ In three studies with 182 overweight patients placed on different diets, more weight was lost when oat bran biscuits were incorporated into the daily diet. (Krotkiewski, M.) Obese

AYURPHARMA

subjects who were placed on a calorie restricted diet that included an oat-based soup as the main meal once or twice daily lost significant amounts of weight after 23 weeks. (Rytter, E., et al) In both of these studies, the subjects attributed the successful weight loss to the increased satiety obtained with oats. (Rytter, E., et al Krotkiewski, M.) Studies also have confirmed the satiating properties of oats. For example, oats ranked 3rd among 38 different foods based on its satiety rating. (Holt, S.H.A., Miller.,et al) ¾¾ MODE OF ACTION A number of studies indicate that beta-glucan is the major active cholesterol-reducing component of oats. When beta-glucans are fed in a dose-dependent manner, significantly greater reductions in blood cholesterol are observed as beta-glucan content increases. (Behall, K.M.,et al) Oats lowers blood cholesterol levels via the formation of a viscous gel by the oat soluble fiber. This binds bile acids and increases their excretion within the feces. (Judd, P.A. et al, Marlett, J.A.,et al) The production of more bile acids from cholesterol of endogenous origin or the circulation is thus stimulated, reducing circulating blood cholesterol. There may be additional ways in which oats lower cholesterol beyond binding and removal of cholesterol rich bile acids. Bacterial fermentation of the betaglucans increases the release of short chain fatty acids, which may inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis. (Glore, S.R., Van Treeck, D., et al) Soluble fiber may also delay gastric emptying and reduce postprandial insulin concentrations,

which also inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis. (Ink, S. and Matthews, R). And there has been some indication that oat soluble fiber may reduce the intestinal absorption of cholesterol. (Shinnick, F.L. and Marlett, J.A.) ¾¾ CONCLUSIONS The cardiovascular benefits of oats consumption extend beyond its well- documented hypocholesterolemic effects. A number of observational and human studies indicate that oats may modify other CHD risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, and may also exert direct vasoprotective effects. The consumption of oats as a regular part of the diet should be encouraged as both the long-term and short-term consumer acceptability of oats has been reported.

ACNE

VULGARIS Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous ( that is fat or grease) glands and hair follicles usually found on the face, the neck, chest and shoulders

AYURPHARMA

Dr. Loren P Saldanha

dr.lorenpsaldanha@gmail.com

Acne is perhaps the most common chronic skin disease. It is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous ( that is fat or grease) glands and hair follicles usually found on the face, the neck, chest and shoulders. Nearly eight out of ten young people between the ages of 12 and 24 suffer from some degree of acne. It is closely related to the disturbance in the hormones experienced at puberty. The majority of patients recover between the ages 20 and 30 years. But it is still common in men over 30 years. In women, it rarely lasts beyond the early thirties and is normally worse before each menstrual period. The diseases causes a great deal of embarrassment at an age when people tend to be sensitive about personal appearance. The skin, covering the entire body, is a marvellous and intricate mechanism. It serves three main purposes; namely, protection of the inner organism, regulation of body temperature and elimination of cell waste and systemic refuse. The skin is directly connected with and intimately bound up with the working of the whole system. All skin diseases, including acne, are the outcome of malfunctioning of the body as a whole. ¾¾ Symptoms Acne is characterized by the presence blackheads, pimples, small superficial sebaceous cysts and scars. There are over half a dozen forms of acne. All of them are

38

OCTOBER

concerned with sebaceous glands or the glands connected with hair follicles. The most common form of acne is blackheads. The areas chiefly affected are the forehead, temples, cheeks, and chin, the chest and back. In rare cases, almost the entire body may be covered with black heads with extensive scarring. ¾¾ Causes All forms of acne have their origin in wrong feeding habits, such as irregular hours of eating, improper food, excess of starches and sugar, excess of fatty foods. Chronic constipation is another major cause of acne. If the bowels do not move properly, waste matter is not eliminated as quickly as it should be and the blood stream becomes surcharged with toxic matter. The extra efforts of the skin to eliminate excess waste result in acne and other forms of skin disease. Yet another important cause of acne is a devitalised condition of the skin resulting from unhygienic living habits. Other causes of the disorder are excessive use of tea, coffee, alcohol or tobacco, strenuous studies, masturbation and sedentary habits which lead to indigestion and general debility. ¾¾ Treatment The treatment of acne by the administration of ointment does not serve any purpose. They only suppress the action of the sebaceous glands temporarily. In nature cure, the main emphasis is on diet and certain water applications. To begin with the patient should resort to all fruit diet for about a week. In this regimen, there should be three meals a day, consisting of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grape-fruit, pineapple and peaches. Citrus fruits, bananas, dried, stewed or tinned fruits should not be taken. Unsweetened lemon or plain water, either hot or cold, should be drunk and nothing else. During this period, warm –water enema should be taken daily to cleanse the bowels and all other measures adopted to eradicate constipation. After a week of all fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet. Emphasis

OCTOBER

should be on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts and whole grain cereals, especially millet and brown rice. Further shorter periods on the all fruits for three days, or so may be necessary at a monthly interval till the condition of the skin improves. Strict attention to diet is essential for recovery. Starchy, protein and fatty foods, should be restricted. Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods should all be avoided, as also soft drinks, candies, ice cream and products made with sugar and white flour. Two vitamins, namely, niacin and vitamin A have been used successfully to treat acne. The vitamin therapy which may comprise a niacin, 100 mg three times daily and vitamin A in large doses up to 1,50,000 units per day should not exceed one month. Vitamin E is also vitally important to prevent scarring from acne and in removing old scars. Another effective remedy in the realm of nutrition that seems to offer new promise of help for acne is zinc. It has shown dramatic results in some cases. Zinc should be taken in therapeutic doses of 50 mg three times a day. After noticeable improvement it can be gradually reduced. ¾¾ Local Treatment As regards local treatment, hot fomentation should be applied to open up the pores and squeeze the waste matter. Then rinse with cold water. Sun and air baths by exposing the whole body to sun and air are highly beneficial. The healing packs made of grated cucumber, oatmeal cooked in milk, and cooked, creamed carrots used externally, have been found to be effective. The orange peel is valuable in the treatment of acne. The peel, pounded well with water on a piece of stone, should be applied to the affected areas. The lemon has also proved beneficial in removing pimples and acne . It should be applied regularly. A teaspoonful of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder, is another effective home remedy for pimples and blackheads. The mixture should be applied to the face after thoroughly washing it, every night before retiring. The juice of raw potatoes has also proved very valuable in clearing skin blemishes. This cleansing results from high content of potassium sulphur, phosphorous and chlorine in the potato. These elements are, however, of value only when the potato is raw as in this state they are composed of live organic atoms. A hot Epsom - salt bath twice a week will be highly beneficial in all cases of acne. This bath is prepared by adding one and a half kg of Epsom – salt to 50 litres of water having a temperature of about 100 o F. The patient should remain in the bath from 25 to 35 minutes till he perspires freely. After the bath the patient should cool off gradually.

ªª

There is no food which is more nutritious and can supply all the nutrients that we need, than milk. Milk is essential for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Physically weak people and patients recover quickly by taking milk. Those who do not suffer from any disease can gain physical strength. It is much better if they take a couple of dates with milk. However, those who take plenty of milk should also do exercises.

Milk is an easily digestible liquid food. Still, thick milk which is not mixed with water is not so easily digestible. Therefore, children should be fed boiled cooled milk mixed with water before boiling. Milk of a black cow is very good from the point of view of health as it is rich in nutrients and special vitamins. Pure buffalo milk is not suitable for drinking as it is not easily digestible. Therefore, it should be diluted with water. Small babies who suffer from cough get better if you feed one tea spoon of pure ass’s milk. Sheep’s milk, taken in limited quantities is a good tonic for physically weak people. Dysentery with discharge of blood can be cured by drinking sheep’s milk mixed with lemon juice. Sheep’s milk is also a good tonic for patients suffering from nervous weakness, T.B., rickets, constipation, asthama, piles etc. They should drink one cup of well boiled sheep’s milk mixed with one table spoon of honey, every night. The taste of milk will not be lost, if you boil milk for about half an hour and cool it immediately by keeping the vessel in a trough of cold water. Milk should be taken when it is still warm. But it should not be taken at all after heavy meals as the food will not be digested and you will suffer from constipation. It is best to drink milk three hours after meals. Do not eat sour fruits after drinking milk as milk will not be easily digested. It is also not a healthy habit to drink milk mixed with sugar. Mix half a tea spoon of fine turmeric powder in one cup of boiled milk. Add honey to taste and drink it twice or thrice if you experience excessive thirst which may be a symptom of some illness. Grind two almonds well with milk, and mix the paste in two table spoons of milk. Dip a piece of bread in this mixture and rub it on your face for fifteen minutes in the morning and evening for a period of one week to eliminate all the pimples and black-heads. Your skin will become smooth, gain colour and brightness.

Boil a cup of fresh milk well in the night. Mix the juice of one lemon in it and keep for ten to fifteen minutes. Apply this milk on the face, palms and soles. After they dry up, go to bed; next morning, wash them with warm water. Continue this treatment for a few days. This is an excellent beauty aid for your face. You can get sound sleep if you massage the soles with this milk. Wash your face in winter with water mixed with a little milk, to prevent cracks on the skin. You can cure common cold by drinking a cup of warm milk mixed with pepper powder and sugar candy. You can cure head-ache by applying ginger paste prepared by rubbing a piece of ginger on a sandstone with milk and breast milk. Mix a pinch of salt in four tea-spoons of milk. Apply it on the face to prevent wrinkles. Apply a few drops of pure cow’s milk or breastmilk in the eyes which are red or burning or paining as if pricked by a needle. You can cure mouth ulcers by drinking a cup of freshly milked frothy milk in the morning for two or three days. Mix half a tea spoon of pure turmeric powder in one cup of boiled cooled milk and drink it twice a day as long as it is necessary to clear blocked urination. Grind four or five cardamoms with a little milk and mix the powder in one cup of tender coconut water. Drink it twice a day for a period of four to five days to clear blocked urination. Apply five to six drops of breast-milk in the nostrils at frequent intervals to stop bleeding from the nose. Mix the juice of one lemon in one cup of freshly milked frothy milk and take it immediately to cure bleeding piles. You will see good result within a week, Bathing in milk is believed to be an aid to enhance the beauty of the skin. It is said that the Roman Queens used to take bath in milk. Even Hollywood Stars are believed to do this. Resting in the bath tub filled with milk, massaging the body with milk and taking regular bath in water after half an hour are considered to be a good remedy to cure skin diseases and eradicate black spots. However, this is unthinkable now. Not even rich people may be able to do this. But treatment with limited quantity of milk is possible. It can be taken internally or applied externally on the body to protect the health. Massage the face, palms and soles with cream to soften the skin. The same treatment is good for eradicating of scars/spots, pimples and to prevent wrinkles. You can prevent the skin from getting darkened when exposed to the sun in the hot season. For this, you have to massage the face, hands, feet, that is, the parts of the body that are normally exposed to the sun with cream for a period of one month at least. Rub a piece of turmeric root stock on the sandstone with cream and apply the paste on lips, palms and soles to cure cracks on the skin due to cold. pg 44....

atching a person have epileptic seizures can be more frightening than the condition itself. Seizures, called ‘Fits’, occur when the nerve cells or neurons of the brain generate abnormal electrical activity which gets propagated along the brain, and results in the person having unexplained behavioural changes. ¾¾ Types of Epilepsy: Epileptic seizures are of two types. A typical symptom of an epileptic seizure is when the person falls to the ground, contracts the body, frothing at the mouth. However, this type actually accounts for about 30-40 percent of seizures. The second and more common types of seizures are sudden explained behavioural changes where the person seems to

lapse into a trance lasting seconds to minutes. Many of these attacks may be unnoticed leading to a delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Rohit (Name Changed) could never go to school like other children his age. Wracked by seizures from when he was only six months old, he was pulled out from school by his parents when his seizures made it impossible for him to play and study like other children. A surgery to ‘disconnect’ the seizurecausing part from the rest of his brain was all that it took for Dr. Ravi Mohan Rao, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Vikram Hospital Bengaluru to restore Rohit’s childhood. Today the body is a topper at school and his seizures have vanished. ¾¾ Decoding the brain: “The boy had a developmental malformation of the brain which was causing seizures”, Dr. S. Raghavendra, Consultant Neurologist and Epileptologist at Vikram Hospital’s Epilepsy Care Centre. A Video EEG on Rohit revealed to the neurologist’s trained eye that the young boy was having seizures originating from the right side of the brain and due to a developmental malformation in the brain. ‘The boy was having 50-100 attacks a day, sometimes unnoticed by his parents or teachers because the symptoms are not visible”, informs the neurologist. “Through the Video EEG, I could record the slightest abnormality in the brain and convince his parents that he was suffering from Epilepsy”, he adds. An MRI too showed up the same symptom. The PET scan during a period when there are no seizures showed reduced blood flow in the region of the abnormality. ¾¾ Disconnecting the abnormality: Although epilepsy surgery is complex, the treating team of neurologists and neurosurgeons follow a straightforward set of principles. The strategy is to identify the area of abnormally discharging neurons or the “seizure focus”, and to remove it when possible. In certain patients without a well

Tests and Scans to identify and confirm Epilepsy: The patient is run through detailed assessment of the seizure and important tests for accurate diagnosis. Video EEG: Brain activity from its surface is recorded by placing electrodes on the scalp and connecting it to a detector-machine. During a fit, typical electrical activity is captured with the video recording of the patient as he throws the fit. By correlating the EEG with the Video recording the neurophysician can identify the type of epilepsy and localise the seizure area. MRI of Brain: This detects abnormalities of the brain. EEG: This is recorded by placing the electrodes on the surface of the brain itself. This is because the skull reduces the intensity of the brain activity by 200 times making the detection of the abnormal spikes difficult.
