Diabetes and health management Any abnormality in the human system, depend on the human genes. When there is a diabetic gene inherited by mankind, it could penetrate to produce symptoms in any one. But the most important thing to remember is that, it does not and, cannot; show its powers unless the owner of the gene puts himself in an unfriendly atmosphere. If he eats too much and becomes obese and does not bother even to get up from his easy chair, then he has no control over his blood sugar and the poor pancreas finds it difficult to control the sugar level, then diabetes is certain to appear. But if person can control his blood sugar right from younger days by being very careful in his/her diet and works very hard to expend sugar in his skeletal muscles, then the gene will not be able to penetrate and invite diabetes. Both the gene and diabetes cannot show its power in such individuals for

a long time. Then, in old age everyone will be a diabetic, anyway, with or without the gene, due mainly to the exhaustion of the pancreas. People in general have become affluent and have started eating a lot of junk food and become obese. The other important reason for young people to get maturity onset diabetes is their family background. When they are born to poor mothers who did not have good nutrition during the first trimester of their pregnancy, they develop very small pancreas to begin with which could produce limited amount of Insulin. If such babies survive and grow up and then put themselves on a food plenty atmosphere they become diabetics in young age. This is called gene-food mismatch. ¾¾ Live a normal life: Get your weight to normal and try to keep it there mainly by eating less and working more. If you walk for one hour at your own pace, you will have spent 350 calories. That will prevent from showing powers. You need not have any special diets. You could eat less of what you have been eating if you have been obese. If you have been thin you need to have special diet advice to put on weight to reach the normal mark and then also control your sugar levels. Eating must be small at a given time and more number of times in a day. Six small meals a day is ideal. If after doing all these and you have not been able to control, then you could try to follow doctor’s advice about drugs. There again one has to be careful to be an informed partner in his/her treatment as many of the drugs are not good in the long run. Your doctor is your best friend and be his partner in your management. In conclusion, we are a friend of mankind and do not intend to harm them. Mankind should help themselves by behaving as they should. Modernity and affluence has taken them to this pass. Their preserved junk foods are their enemy numerous and their sedentary life style is killing them. They should not blame others for that. Look after yourself. If you act wisely you could have a normal life expectancy.

Dementia Dementia means loss of mental functions, an emerging global challenge. It is a long and difficult journey for the effected and their families.
Dementia means loss of mental functions. In addition to memory loss, dementia affects the ability to think, speak and make decisions. It adversely interferes with almost all activities of daily living. Most forms of dementia are degenerative and severely debilitating. Eventually it leads to behavioural problems like insomnia, wandering, apathy or aggression. The disorder is progressive with gradual or rapid worsening. ¾¾ The Prevalence The number of dementia patients in the world is currently 24.3 million, increasing by 4.6 million every year; that is with one new case every 7 seconds. Studies reveal that after 60 years of age, the incidence of dementia doubles with every 5 years. By the age of 90 years, one in three persons are affected. Today in India 32,00,000 people are affected by dementia. This figure is expected to double every 20 years. Recent studies show that the prevalence of reversible or treatable dementias in India is considerably higher than in the developed world. ¾¾ Age and Dementia Increasing age is the biggest risk factor of all types of dementia. Cases of dementia has been increasing rapidly with the growing elderly population. ¾¾ The Causes of Dementia The main cause of dementia is the neurons of the brain not functioning property or dying. More than 85% of the causes are non reversible and the rest could be treated and controlled. Aizheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia (60%). Vascular diseases related to hypertension and stress, Dementia Lewy Body disease, Parkinson’s and Temporal Lobe Dementia are other irreversible causes. Vitamins deficiency, head injuries and psychiatric disorder come under reversible causes. Even in these cases, early diagnosis and treatment can only delay the progression of the disease. ¾¾ Most Typical Symptoms of Dementia

They behave abnormally and become heavily dependent on others to care for them. In India today, family members have to take the full burden of caring the patients. Professional caregivers are difficult to find. Institutional care support systems are woefully lacking. When cure is not possible effective care alone can ease the trauma. As providers of prolonged and continued care, day and night, all days, the caring family members often become the worst sufferers. As such, along with the patients, the caregivers also need sustained support.

Acne vulgaris is a very common chronic disorder commonly seen in adult hood. Most of the adolescents (nearly 80%) experience acne. Vision Rehabilitation Several Ophthalmic conditions do not lend themselves to medical and surgical improvements owing to the nature of the disease or the limitation of current science. These proverbial “end of the road” conditions may severely affect vision at early ages even as development of other sensory
faculties gets affected. Besides the patients themselves, dealing with this emotionally and physically challenging situation requires motivation from the patient and his or her family members. It also needs a very special skill set that must be learnt, re-learnt, customized and mastered. This is the void that Vision Rehabilitation hopes to fill. Psoriasis is basically a chronic condition that affects the growth cycle of skin cells – the cells rapidly build up on the skin forming thick, silvery scales; this results in itching, discomfort and pain. Persistent yet unpredictable, this is one of the most baffling skin conditions. Showcasing the efficacy of homeopathy, clinical research studies done in UK and Germany have shown that between 81 to 97 % of cases treated with Homeopathy show definite improvement with no side-effects. Isn’t it about time you took your step towards a psoriasis-free life?
¾¾
What is Psoriasis? To put it simply, Psoriasis is a chronic disorder that results in red, thickened patches on the skin with shedding of silvery scales. The condition may be accompanied with discomfort and/or pain. Skin cells normally have a life cycle of about 28 days each - which means that each of these cells is shed off and another comes up in place every 28 days. Now imagine if the cells start growing very rapidly without waiting for the earlier ones to shed out. It would lead to a build up of a thick layer of cells leading to the thickening of the skin in the affected area. This results in red patches with scaling.
MH
Psoriasis can vary in intensity from mild cases with only nuisance-value to some extremely debilitating cases. The disease can also progress to affect other areas of the body such as nails, joints, scalp, etc. A tendency to come and go periodically is commonly seen in many cases – there are phases of worsening of the symptoms (relapse) and periods when the condition spontaneously resolves (remission). Almost 2-3 % of the general population is affected by Psoriasis and it is increasingly becoming more and more common. The incidence is higher amongst young adults though it can strike at any age. No gender predilection is seen in the cases largely.

In addition to all this, it’s very important to bear in mind that Psoriasis is not infectious – it cannot be passed from person to another through physical contact. Causes ¾¾ What ticked off its onset? Psoriasis is considered to be an auto-immune condition in which the immune cells of the body mistakenly attack the body’s own skin cells. This triggers an abnormal response in which there is abnormally fast growth of the cells leading to thickened skin & excessive shedding of the scales. What triggers the auto-immunity cannot be exactly pin-pointed. However, auto-immunity tends to run in families and a genetic background has been verified in many cases over and over. There may be a family history of any kind of auto immune disease in the patient’s family, not necessarily of psoriasis. In addition many triggers have been identified that can initiate an attack of psoriasis. This may be in people who have never had at attack ever as well as people who suffer from the disease but are in remission. These external stressors serve as triggers for the inherited defect in immune function. They may even worsen the existing symptoms and some of the common ones are: ªª Bacterial infection such as streptococcal throat infection; thrush; viral infection ªª Stress - this is one of the commonest triggers for the abnormal immune response that is initiated in the body ªª Injury to the skin – this could be in the form of a cut, scrape, insect bite - the phenomenon in which the skin lesions occur at the site of the trauma is called Koebner phenomenon ªª Cold weather - the onset of winters is known to cause a relapse in a large number of patients of psoriasis ªª Environmental factors - sunburn, chemical burns, etc ªª Smoking ªª Excessive consumption of alcohol ªª A reaction to a vaccine ªª Certain medications – those containing lithium (found in some anti-depressants); beta blockers (high blood pressure medications); hydroxychloroquine (antimalarial drug); iodides ¾¾ Symptoms Peculiarly identified by the nature of the lesions, Psoriasis has a unique presentation in most cases one that cannot be missed. However, the symptoms may vary from person to person in terms of the location, spread, severity and duration of the lesions. Principally, few or all of the following features can be seen in most cases: ªª Red, thickened patches/lesions (called as plaques) on the skin – these may vary from small rain-drop sized lesions to large ones covering an extensive area ªª The lesions are covered with silvery scales ªª Itching of the lesions is a common feature – there may be burning that occurs after scratching ªª There may be discomfort or pain experienced at the site of lesions ªª The lesions are dry and excessive dryness may

cause cracked skin and bleeding During the active stage of the disease, scratching or cutting the skin may give rise to new lesions at such areas (known as Koebner phenomenon) ªª Nails may be thickened, pitted or ridged. There may be discoloration of the nails and they may crumble or detach from the nail-bed ªª In case of joint affection, there is swelling and stiffness of joints At this point, it is important to discuss the different types of psoriasis because the prognosis of the cases differs based on the type: ªª Psoriasis vulgaris: This is the commonest form and is also called Plaque psoriasis. Seen in almost 9 out of 10 psoriasis patients, this presents as red raised patches with silvery scales. ªª Guttate psoriasis: Small, rain-drop like lesions are seen to develop on the trunk and limbs in this type. Several weeks after a throat infection (particularly streptococcal), this form may develop suddenly. ªª Pustular psoriasis: The lesions in this kind of psoriasis are filled with pus besides having the other peculiar characteristics. ªª Inverse Psoriasis: Bright red, smooth patches are seen in the folds of the skin here. Common areas of affection are under the breasts, in armpits, near genitals, under buttocks and under abdominal folds. ªª Erythrodermic psoriasis: This is a rare form and can be quite serious. Patients develop intense redness and swelling of a large part of the skin, often accompanied by itching or pain. This can be triggered by severe sunburn, intake of steroids, etc. In severe cases, the patient may develop dehydration, fever, infection requiring hospital admission. ªª Nail psoriasis: Affection of fingernail and toenails is seen in many cases and appears as discolored thickened, pitted or ridged nails that crumble or detach from the nail-bed. ªª Scalp psoriasis affects almost half the people who develop skin psoriasis. In these cases, the scalp has dry and scaly skin or heavily crusted plaque areas. The plaque flakes off or peels off in clusters. ªª Psoriatic arthritis: Joint affection is seen in about 10 to 30 percent of people with psoriasis. Symptoms include swelling, stiffness and pain in the affected joints. This can be quite crippling in
ªª

the advanced stages. Palmo-plantar psoriasis: Typically the lesions are seen on the palms and soles of the patient in this variety. Psoriasis, on account of the chronic nature of the illness and its effects on the looks of patients, can lead to many emotional problems such as:  Anxiety  Depression  Anger, irritability  Embarrassment Treatment of psoriasis must be targeted to deal with all of these emotional affections as well. ¾¾ Diagnosis Your physician can mostly identify Psoriasis based on the presenting signs and symptoms and examination of the lesions. Special tests are usually not required for this. However, if it is difficult to confirm the diagnosis, he may take a small sample of your skin (biopsy) to be examined under the microscope at a laboratory. This helps to confirm the diagnosis as well as to rule out other similar-looking conditions. In case of involvement of joints, X-ray of the affected joint may be taken to assess the degree of damage occurred to the joint as well as to monitor the progress of the illness. Certain blood tests may also be required to rule out other forms of joint diseases. Throat culture may be required to look for streptococcal infection in cases of guttate psoriasis. Certain conditions that may have an appearance similar to psoriasis include: ªª Eczema ªª Seborrheic dermatitis ªª Lichen planus ªª Pityriasis rosea ªª Ringworm (fungal infection / tinea corporis) The prognosis of psoriasis is largely based on the severity of the illness. The National Psoriasis Foundation defines guidelines for diagnosing the severity of cases: ªª The palm of hand equals 1% of total skin area of the body ªª Mild Psoriasis is that which affects less than 3% of the body ªª Psoriasis is of moderate intensity if it affects 3 to 10% of the body ªª More than 10% of the body affection is considered severe As per International Medical Protocols, the disease is said to be cured if the patient has no symptoms for five consecutive years. ¾¾ Homeopathic Treatment

Research-based evidences speak clear and loud of the success of homeopathy in treating psoriasis. A study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, a conventional medical Journal, showed that psoriasis patients experienced significant improvement in their quality of life and reduction in their psoriasis symptoms with Homeopathy. And this was without any kind of side-effects whatsoever. Of the 82 patients involved in the study that went on for 2 years, many had suffered psoriasis for as long as 15 years and had previously unsuccessfully tried conventional treatments. The homeopathic remedies prescribed for Psoriasis address the body at the level of immunity and gently restore the deviation back to normalcy. They help to control the further progress of the disease. Treatment also depends on the duration and severity of illness. Recent -onset cases and milder cases respond faster as compared to those with a longer duration and extensive spread. On account of being a stubborn disease, cases of Psoriasis usually require long-term treatment and there is no magical cure. Perseverance and compliance with the treatment is the key to cure. During the treatment, there are periods of ups and downs but your treating physician will always be there to help you sail through easily. ¾¾ Self Care Tips ªª One of the principal things that have helped thousands of our patients is the intake of flax seeds. Known as ‘alsi’ and commonly available, flax seeds are a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids which modify the chain of events that cause psoriasis. Roast the seeds, grind them and take two spoons with water daily before breakfast and before dinner. ªª Avoid red meat since it contains a natural inflammatory substance which worsens the inflammation in psoriasis ªª Exposure to the morning sun for about 15 minutes is helpful to many patients. Avoid sun exposure between 11 am to 4 pm. ªª Regular and quick bath with lukewarm (not hot) water and mild soaps containing some oil/fats helps to remove scales and reduce inflammation. For severe exacerbation of symptoms, Epsom salt bath helps (use after consultation with your physician). Apply olive oil after such a bath to avoid dryness. ªª Apply olive oil to scalp the night before washing hair ªª Wear cotton clothes (instead of synthetic fabrics) ªª Apply moisturizer or olive oil immediately after bath to seal moisture in the skin ªª Consult your physician for exercises to be done in case of joint affection ªª Learn to relax – take up relaxation techniques or meditation to reduce the stress on your system ªª Quit smoking ªª Shed off any excess weight ªª Protect your skin from any kind of injury ªª Keep nails trimmed so as to avoid excessive scratching which may lead to flare up

A safeguard against unwanted pregnancies, a reliable choice when other measures fail
Gynecologic problems
Proper and Timely usage of Emergency Contraceptive pills can bring down the spiraling figures of unsafe abortions thus giving the women the choice of a safe and reliable alternative. So EC is a safe alternative method of preventing unintended pregnancy
Research shows that seventy-eight percent of the pregnancies in India are unplanned and at least twenty- five percent are unwanted. This unfortunately leads to abortions, numbering to approximately 11 million a year, half of which are unsafe and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Unprotected sexual intercourse and contraceptive failure are the key causes leading to unintended pregnancies. Lack of awareness further augments this problem. Inspite of efforts at sexeducation, couple protection rate is still low. Illegal abortions, social trauma, abandoned children are all results of ignorance. Emergency contraception- a safeguard against unwanted pregnancies though an available option is not well known. Inspite of being available in the Indian market for nearly a decade, studies show that only one out of every 100 women is aware of emergency contraceptive pills. This emphasizes the need to spread awareness regarding this method of contraception in order to increase acceptability. Emergency contraception can be used when a condom breaks, if a diaphragm or cervical cap slips
out of place during intercourse, after a sexual assault, or any time unprotected intercourse occurs. As per clinical trials, these pills can prevent a pregnancy by up to 89% effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. Most of the unwanted pregnancy is due to failure to use contraceptives, or contraceptive failure like condom breaks, diaphragm slips, IUD getting misplaced, pills being missed out or after a sexual assault. Under such circumstances, knowledge and timely use of emergency contraceptive can be the saviour. Pregnancy can be avoided with a success rate of 75 -99% depending on the time interval between intercourse and consumption of the emergency contraceptive pill. The term is used to describe methods which can be used post - coital to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sexual act. EC acts as an interceptive agent, i.e. ovulation, fertilization or implantation is prevented depending on the phase of menstrual cycle. That means: ªª It may stop an egg being released from the ovary. ªª If an egg has been released, it may prevent the sperm from fertilizing it. ªª If the egg is already fertilized, it may prevent it

from attaching itself to the lining of the womb. It is important to note that pregnancy is established only after the fertilized egg attaches itself to the womb. This process ideally takes 5 -7 days after an unprotected sexual act and within this time frame pregnancy can be prevented. Once this period is passed and pregnancy is established, an emergency contraceptive will be ineffective as it does not abort. EC contains a hormone called Levonorgestrel which is highly efficient and has minimal side -effects. This is the same ingredient that is found in several birth control pills. The difference is that ECs contain a larger dose of levonorgestrel and when taken immediately after an unprotected sexual act maximizes the protection against pregnancy. Hence there is a need to emphasize that success of EC lies mainly on its correct and prompt use. ¾¾ Emergency Contraception - Demystifying certain myths A lot has been spoken about Emergency Contraceptives in the recent months. However the fact remains that to date there is very little knowledge about the product and a lot of confusion regarding the category. ¾¾ What is an emergency contraceptive? An Emergency Contraceptive is basically a safe alternative method of preventing unintended pregnancy in case of contraceptive failure ¾¾ Is it advisable to make emergency contraceptive an OTC product? 6-7 million abortions take place in India each year, performed by untrained persons working in unhygienic conditions. About 13% of maternal deaths in India result from unsafe abortions. In such a situation making emergency contraceptive available OTC would be an effective step in order to curb unsafe abortions. Secondly, in order to use an emergency contraceptive effectively, the time frame of 72 hours is of crucial importance. If not taken within this period, it may not be as effective. A woman / couple may not be able to get a doctor’s prescription in the limited timeframe. In certain cases there might be hesitation. Therefore the need to make it available OTC arises. Unwanted pregnancy is a major public health concern with potentially fatal consequences with regards to women’s health. The easy availability of this product should translate into fall in the number of unwanted / unintended pregnancies. ¾¾ Is Emergency Contraceptive an Abortion Pill? One of the most common misconceptions revolving around the drug is that it is equivalent to an Abortion pill. However this is not true because an emergency contraceptive works in the time frame before a pregnancy is established. It is important to understand
18
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
the functioning of emergency contraceptive in order to dispel this myth. EC acts as an interceptive agent and not an abortive one, i.e. ovulation, fertilization or implantation is prevented depending on the phase of menstrual cycle. ¾¾ Is EC a Substitute for Family Planning Measures? In the case of emergency contraceptives, lack of proper knowledge about its functioning has lead to women popping them as regular oral contraceptives that are taken on a daily basis. An emergency contraceptive is used post-coital to prevent unwanted pregnancy while a regular contraceptive is used precoital for birth control. One needs to understand that Emergency contraceptive pills are comparatively heavier in dosage than regular oral contraceptives or birth control pills and therefore cannot be taken regularly as a family planning method. It should be used in “Emergency” only as the name suggests. Therefore an Emergency Contraceptive is not a ‘ substitute for any other form of family planning method. ¾¾ In what cases can it be used? An Emergency Contraceptive is to be taken only in rare cases of contraceptive failure, condom breakage or when regular pills are forgotten. It acts as an effective and safe back up option providing maximum protection against unintended pregnancies. ¾¾ How are emergency contraceptives used? Emergency contraceptive is used in rare cases of contraceptive failure. In these cases, the pill(s) have to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse with 12 hour gap between each pill. Now there are pills in the market that come in a single pill pack which are less complicated to consume. They contain the same dose as other EC available in the market but combined into one, which can be consumed any time within 72 hours but the earlier, the better, ¾¾ How often can emergency contraceptives be used? / Can emergency contraceptives be used repeatedly? Emergency contraceptives can be used more than once in a cycle but it is recommended only as an emergency contraceptive. There are several
AYURPHARMA
october-2013
reasons why emergency contraceptives are not a logical choice for regular contraception: ÂÂ any method of regular contraception is more effective than repeated use of an EC ÂÂ long-term overuse can cause irregular menstrual cycles ÂÂ it can cause annoying side effects like nausea and vomiting Make sure you continue to use regular methods of contraception for preventing unintended pregnancies. ¾¾ Consumption of EC can lead to long term health hazards? Emergency Contraceptives contain a hormone called Levonorgestrel which is the same ingredient found in many birth control pills. The difference is that they contain a larger dose of Levonorgestrel and when taken immediately offer maximum protection against pregnancy. As this ingredient is a hormone, the side effects experienced after its use are temporary. Consumption of an emergency contraceptive in rare cases of contraceptive failure does not lead to any kind of long-term health hazards. However one should remember that an EC contains double the dosage as compared to a regular contraceptive pill. Therefore reiterating the previously mentioned fact, that it is not a regular contraceptive and therefore excessive usage should be avoided. ¾¾ Emergency Contraceptives serves as a substitute for a condom? An EC does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases / HIV. Therefore care needs to be taken by using contraceptives that provide protection and opting for an EC only in cases where a condom breaks. ¾¾ Will the availability of emergency contraceptives increase promiscuity? Studies conducted have not shown any evidence of change in behavior after the availability of EC. It is like saying that promiscuity has increased after the availability of condoms. To summarize, an Emergency Contraceptive is a drug that if used in the right manner can prove to be a boon in terms of reducing unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions. However, incorrect or incomplete information regarding any form of drug can lead to its misuse and ultimately ill-effects.

Male Impotence
Permanent Solutions for All Kinds of Sexual Disorders The testes are two glandular organs, which secrete the semen; they are suspended in the scrotum by the spermatic cords. Testes are suspended outside the abdominal cavity in the scrotum, In ayurveda Acharya Sushruta, while explaining the anatomy of testis has said “Maamsa asruk kapha medaha prasaadaadwavrushanaha” which means the two testes are made up of musles, blood, fat and their derivatives. ¾¾ Scrotum The Scrotum is a cutaneous pouch which contains the testes and parts of the spermatic cords (the spermatic cord is composed of arteries, veins, lymphatics, nerves, and the excretory duct of the testis. These structures are connected together by areolar tissue). It is divided on its surface into two lateral portions by a ridge or raphé. (Sushruta explains raphe’ as “seevani” or a stitch like ridge. He has cautioned not to injure it with surgical instruments) of these two lateral portions the left hangs lower than the right, to correspond with the greater length of the left spermatic cord. The Testes (two egg-shaped structures) remain in the Scrotum, outside the body, where the temperature is about 3 degrees C Cooler than the body internal temperature (27 degrees C. sperm development in the testes requires the lower temperature.) The testis is composed primarily of seminiferous tubules and interstitial cells. Seminiferous tubules are packed closely together. There are approximately 500 tubules in each testis. The cells within the seminiferous tubules are germ cells an sertoli cells. The germ cells mature into spermatozoa or sperms. The Sertoli cells serve as supporting cells for developing germ cells. Leydig cells are very important cells that are present in the interstitial space outside the seminiferous tubule. These cells produce testosterone which stimulate the germ cell maturation. The complex process involved in production of sperms from germ cells is known as spermatogenesis. Spermatozoa or sperms are first produced at puberty and spermatogenic activity is maintained into old age. Millions of sperms are produced each day. The mature sperms are released into the lumen of seminiferous tubule. The sperms pass into epididymis. (lying upon the lateral edge of this posterior border is a long, narrow, fiattened body, named the epididymis),

The canal of the epididymis is continued into the vasdeferens which rise up over the brim of the pelvis and passes down to the prostate gland at the base of the urinary bladder. It joins the seminal vesicles to form the ejaculatory ducts. Epididymis serves as sperm conduit and sperm reservoir where sperm acquire motility and fertilizing capacity. Just prior to ejaculation, the testes are brought close to the abdomen and fluid is rapidly transported through the vas deferens to the ejaculatory duct and subsequently into the urethra.(the urethra passes through the penis and opens to the outside.) ¾¾ Hormones That Influence In Sperm Production Males begin to produce Sperm during Puberty. At this time, the male hormone( androgen) testosterone produced by testes, stimulate the sperm production. The pituitary gland releases FSH (follicle – stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone). These hormones stimulate the testes to make Testosterone, the male sex hormone. The whole male body responds to testosterone. Hence sushruta has said “ Yatha payasi sarpistu goodashchekshow raso yatha shareereshu tatha shukram nrinaam vidyaadhbishagwara “ This means “The shukra (the element which helps in reproduction) is present all over the body.” ¾¾ This can be explained with the following examples The ghee is present in milk in an invisible form. This is extracted from milk using many processes. The sugar is present all over the sugarcane. It is extracted by subjecting the sugarcane to number of processes. Same way shukra is present all over the body. But the cream of shukra (semen) comes out of the body only during the process of ejaculation. Potato should be eaten along with its skin. The skin contains vitamins, minerals and fibre which are all useful whereas the peeled potato contains only starch. Therefore, potato should be cut with its skin; in tact for use in various dishes. If it is necessary to use peeled potato for certain dishes, steam the potatoes along with the skin; slit the steamed potato a little. As it cools down, it becomes dry. Now peel the outer skin, carefully, taking care to see that the inner layer of the skin does not peel away along with the outer skin. Mash the peeled potato along with one tea spoon of butter and one table spoon of hot milk. Add salt and pepper powder to taste to the mashed potato. This is an excellent solid food for children between the ages of two and four, and it helps growth of the body. Potato roasted on burning coal helps urination. It increases the production of breast milk and cures constipation. Potato produces gas in the stomach and causes heaviness in the stomach. Therefore, it should be eaten sparingly. Patients who suffer from diabetes and joint pains do well to avoid potatoes. Potatoes which have been sprayed with pesticides are harmful. Boil potatoes well in water and drain the water into a vessel. Use it to wash painful joints and parts of the body, which are swollen or bruised, to reduce the pain. Crush and grind potatoes to a smooth paste. Apply the paste on burn wounds to bring down the pain. Grind potatoes with lemon juice and apply the paste on the part of the body affected by skin problems like eczema and bandage it.

Motivational wisdom
Leadership is an ability which you must develop to exist. To become a leader you must display an initiative, tact, proper co-ordination, an understanding of others, persuasive ability to motivate and influence the listeners. A successful leader has all the qualities such as patience, initiative, tact, courage, persistence and an unruffled mentality. He should seek out more responsibilities and discharge them cheerfully and smiling. It is not always that leaders are born, some of them become the leader by consistent practice of the requisite qualities. It is often noticed that followers are many but leaders are few. Everybody does not possess sterling qualities. Neither are they endowed with those qualities nor do they try to cultivate them. They are quite content to remain at the same level

The tendency of the common people are to be overjoyed with success and to get upset and depressed with failure. Such people do not have the inner stuff to lead the mass and earn their respect. A true leader must have the quality to keep calm relaxed and composed inspite of strong provocation and opposition. He should not only know the tactful ways to bring together people with varied temperament but he should have the rare quality to make the people listen to his speech without being interrupted. John F. Kennedy, the former American President once said, “It is time for a new generation of leadership to cope with the new problems and new opportunities for there is a new world to be won”. A person’s growth in an organization is measured by how efficiently he can lead a team and get the work done by them. Grab opportunities when it comes and prove your work. Do not fall back or avoid if you want to march ahead in life. A leader’s tone should be full of self confidence firmness and persuasiveness. His listener’s must immediately feel that he is totally different from others and is difficult to ignore. He should have self confidence to control and motivate the group, patience, power of persuasion, free interaction with all kinds of people, and give equal opportunity to others to air their views, have logical reasoning and adjustable mentality, which are the hallmarks of a successful leader. A born leader understands the human psychology very well which helps him to bring together people of different mental attitude with the sole motivation and intention of accomplishing a job. The foundation of leadership rests on co-operation, acceptance of others views sportingly, encouraging others to give frank and neutral comments, inter-personal faith and respect for others feelings. He must be socially acceptable and should get along with others irrespective of attitude temperament and mentality of the different people. Unless a person matches with others he is treated a misfit for becoming a leader. He is responsible to maintain and foster the spirit of co-operation and has to rise above his personal preference in the greater interest of the group. Leadership is a unique quality to motivate others, gain respect and trust of others so that others always come for guidance and help. It is an important aspect that the employer’s always want from a candidate seeking a job-to act as a natural leader for the growth

and welfare of the organization. Stop thinking in terms of Limitations and start thinking in terms of possibilities. ¾¾ The power of will power According to Swami Gokulanandaji (Head of Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi), “Will Power is that which helps a person to do what he or she knows is good or right and avoid those things which our inner voice tells us is wrong and should not be done under any circumstances. Will power is something positive and creative which enables us to follow the right path in a definite way”. It is that force which enables us to get rid of all bad forces and helps us to put into practice what we propose to do. it is that thing you must do - that work which you don’t want to do. We should have firm faith to develop will power and in turn will power gives us firm faith. We have to be conscious of our divine heritage and believe that we have unlimited power within. We have to tap source of power within and cultivate the attitude that we are not tiny little creatures breaking down at the smallest provocation. We are the children of immortal bliss. All power is invested in us. Once we come to have this faith we will be able to manifest, in the real sense of the term, tremendous power that is inside us. Thereby we will be successful in developing will power. Will power cannot be developed overnight. No great work is achieved without hard struggle and hard work. No success is possible without working hard for it and there is no joy in achieving success without effort. One has to overcome so many hurdles to reach the cherished goal. We may not be successful overnight but success is assured if we stick to itThere are two obstacles to cross to develop will power: too much

regret about the past and unnecessary worrying about the future. Neither should we have regret about the mistakes done in the past nor we should worry too much about what will happen in the future. Let us act in the present with fullest concentration forgetting what we have done in the past or anticipating what is stored for us in the future. We have no control over the past now. We have only control to forget about the past. As Swami Gokulananda rightly said, “Let us avoid living in the past or future: let us learn to live in the present and make proper use of it. If we can do that, then it will help us immensely to develop will power and bring the right balance into life. In turn this helps to overcome all kinds of mental tension. In a word, living in the present is an effective cure for mental troubles.” To increase will power we must have sufficient reserve of mental energy. Generally our mental energy is limited and we often fritter it away in idle conversation, purposeless work, day dreaming etc. All these are detrimental to the development of will power. We can strengthen our will power only when we keep a rein over our thoughts from being translated into action. As Shankaracharyaji rightly said “We should call upon our mind again and again to increase our will power because it goes a long way in overcoming mental tension”. According to Lord Buddha, “Remember, the only way to become victorious over wrong thoughts is to review from time to time the phases of one’s own mind, to reflect upon them, to root out all that is evil and cultivate all that is good”. This is a powerful process of self-improvement and increasing will power. One point to remember is that we need great power of concentration in order to develop will power. In fact here is a circular route because will power helps the growth of the power of concentration and the power of concentration in turn helps will power to increase. If we have no control over ourselves, it means we lack will power. The important point is to strive to cultivate will power without which we will never be able to recover hope. Under trying circumstances we should apply our will power to the fullest capacity to tide over the crisis. Irrespective of whether God is there or not, in which form he/ she is, imagining and performing certain rituals, increase our will power. A simple way to develop will power is to learn to say “No” to many things which hinders our progress and stand as a hurdle in front of us to achieve our set goals. According to Mr. Anant Pai, “Self-restraint develops will power”. Swami Vivekananda in soul-stirring words once said, “Stand up, be bold and strong, have faith in yourself. Know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succour you need is within you”. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Yoga
Mental disorders are characterized by abnormalities in behaviour, emotions, thought and interpersonal relationships. Since the patient looks normal but behaves abnormally, these disorders are feared and stigmatized. In fact disorders similar to schizophrenia were described in the Ayurveda as ‘unmada’. Major psychiatric disorders cause severe disruption in the lives of patients and their families. Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression are serious mental disorders which take a toll on both patients and their caregivers. They persist for prolonged periods and create serious disability, interpersonal and work problems, and lead to cognitive decline. While medicines have remarkable and quick ameliorative effects, they cannot prevent cognitive disability due to these illnesses. Thus interventions to improve cognitive capacity are necessary. Cognitive enhancement therapies have emerged to treat cognitive impairment. Different cognitive training programs help improve sustained attention and language processing, planning and executing activities, affect recognition, verbal memory, working memory, processing speed and social problem solving. Yoga -the holistic science enhancing powers of the mind as well as the body- should be investigated as a economical, effective and culturally acceptable cognitive enhancement program. Yoga can have a profound influence on physical, mental, emotional,

behavioral, social and spiritual aspect of life. Yoga facilitates in managing or controlling anxiety, improves muscle-tone, strength, reduces stress and tension, improves concentration and creativity, and creates a sense of well being and calm. Several studies have proved the positive effects of yoga in various psychiatric and cardiac disorders. Most of the asanas used benefit nerves, mind and concentration. If both patient and caregiver perform these practices daily we are confident that they will benefit greatly. ¾¾ Dos and Don’ts ªª Arrive early so that you can settle in and get into the proper frame of mind. ªª Remove your shoes outside the yoga Hall. ªª Do not bring your mobile phone to yoga class. ªª Wear neat and clean loose clothes so that asanas can be performed easily and comfortably. ªª Do not speak or disturb others, be calm and peaceful to derive full benefits. ªª Have a bath before yoga class, and bring a towel if you sweat a lot. ªª Don’t eat for two or three hours before class. If you practice yoga on a full stomach, you might experience cramps, nausea, or vomiting. Digesting food also takes energy that can make you lethargic and decrease your performance. ªª Your bowel should be empty before yogic exercises. ªª Don’t enter class late or leave early as it will disturb others. ªª Please let the trainer know beforehand, about injuries or conditions that may affect your practice. She/he will help you to simplify or avoid asanas you find difficult. ªª Don’t try to be perfect the first time, especially if you have never practiced asanas before. Instead of trying to go as deeply or completely into a pose as others might be able to do, do what you can without straining or injuring yourself. ªª Breathe only through the nose, because by doing so the air which you take in is filtered. It also prevents foreign and harmful objects from getting into lungs. ªª Don’t miss Shavasana which helps your muscles to relax after the hard work of asanas. ªª Go to the Bathroom during Resting Poses only. It is permissible to leave class for a few minutes to go to the bathroom quietly and without disturbing others. There is no need to ask for permission. ªª Take some time afterwards to remember what you did in class, so you can retain what you learned. ªª Review the poses you practiced, and note down any instructions that are more useful for you. Even if you remember just one thing from each class, it will provide a lot of information that can improve your own practice. ¾¾ Appropriate Place for Yoga Practice Place for Yoga Practice: The Yoga room should be a large room with adequate light and air. Open spaces such as parks or gardens can also be used. It should be free from disturbance. Use a comfortable carpet, mat or darrie for asanas. If possible keep pictures of yoga postures handy for reference. Relatives should perform asanas themselves and encourage their ill relatives to perform yoga regularly, and as they become more skillful, to progress to other postures also. Place for Jal Neti: An open space with water taps to provide plain tap water to wash the neti pot both before and after use is ideal. Use warm saline water for Jal Neti Kriya in a special Jal neti Pot. The place should have a good drainage system to drain away waste water to maintain hygiene. Jal neti pots are available in the market. Yoga Protocol: This yoga protocol is of one hour duration. The protocol consisted of Deep breathing, AUM Chanting, Sukshma vyayama, Warm up exercises, Asanas in different position, Pranayama, Shanti Mantra daily and Jalneti Kriya. IT IN HEALTHCARE Information technology started opening its eyes to the healthcare. IT in healthcare has great potential in providing the health record at low costs.
Healthcare, of late in the 21st century has emerged as the prime mover of human activity the world over. It was only the elite west that held importance of healthcare at high pedestal in the previous century. However, the third world too has started opening its eyes to the relevance of healthcare. Healthcare is broadly dependent on two factors: ÂÂ Nature ÂÂ Nurture - we may, apportion the same at 50% each to keep man healthy always. Nature: Nature is regarded as those qualities – in the form of genes - that we have inherited from our ancestors. Nurture: Nurture is that segment of human endeavour, which stresses more on the upbringing in the society (environment) and preventive and

curative measures. The combination of both Nature and Nurture is what all organisms are made up of. We have less or no control on the inherited part of our life BUT we can and should improve our health for a quality life while taking care of Nurture. We need good and disease resistant seed to produce healthy offspring. Man has always been in the search for such ideal genetic form that could live longer. Today’s man lives longer than his predecessor not because of mutation in genes or miracles but better management of his health. Looking back statistically, the average life expectancy of males in India in 1947 was 57 yrs and that of females was 52.5. The same stood at a healthy 67 and 65.5 respectively in 2007 thanks to the greater impetus on healthcare by the successive governments as well. Yet, the average spend per capita on healthcare is a pathetic 2.5% as against 18% to defence forces by the Indian Govt. Now, let us look at what is “IT” doing in healthcare. Healthcare of a person is a continuous process than a one-time achievement. Man is subject to continuous onslaught of Mother Nature, – the natural calamities complementing – the changing

weather conditions and the rough weather in many geographical terrain of our planet. As you move towards poles, the weather conditions worsen (freezing temperature) and towards the center of earth, the temperatures rise as high as 52 degree Celsius. Man is the only animal that requires longer duration of parental care whereas; most other animals stand on their own legs within hours of their birth. And it would certainly help if, medical history of the person is maintained from the date of birth for better healthcare management in times of need. Over 95% of Indian population does not have any record of their health conditions and that is where IT can play a bigger role. Maintaining health records of man in physical form has always been challenging and computerization eases the daunting task. The advantages of computerization could be summarized as: ªª Speed of operation/transaction ªª Storage of large volume of data ªª Quicker retrieval of the stored data ªª Comparison and mapping of stored data for research ªª Clubbing and segregation of data ªª Data sharing across geographic area INFORMATION is the key to success in any field Thus; information could be picked from available DATA. Data is built over a period and storage of the same is a monumental task. Software helps in maintaining patient records in electronic form. Such data could be stored in small devices like Smart card, Pen drive etc in addition to online data storage and transfer. Such data access helps greatly in disease diagnosis, preventive and curative actions. ªª 15 years ago less than 2% of hospitals were computerized ªª Today over 30% of hospitals are computerized in urban area ªª It is expected that nearly 70% of hospitals would be computerized in 5 years ªª National UID may help data access of healthcare also Since most Indians do not maintain any health record themselves, IT in healthcare has great potential in providing the same at low costs. A healthy man builds a healthy Nation.

A technology that mimics the behavior of artificial pancreas The human body has a remarkable ability to maintain tight glucose control when someone does not have diabetes. This tight control is possible because the pancreas and the liver work as a team to make sure that the right balance of glucose and insulin is in the body at all times. Glucose is a type of sugar your body uses for energy. Every cell in your body uses glucose for energy. This is why it is important for you to have a certain amount of glucose in your body at all times, even while sleeping. When you have diabetes your body cannot automatically keep blood glucose and insulin levels in balance because your pancreas no longer produces insulin. You must take insulin either by injection or an insulin pump and balance the insulin you take with your food and activity levels. An insulin pump is a wonderful tool that can help Insulin Pumps – facilitates the task of balancing glucose and insulin Insulin pump therapy is considered the “gold standard” in diabetes management because it provides the best glucose control. They are more commonly used nowadays because of their unique ability to continuously infuse insulin, closely mimicking the behavior of physiological secretion from a normal pancreas. Just as a healthy pancreas delivers insulin automatically, every seven to ten minutes throughout the day, an insulin pump matches the natural rhythm of a healthy pancreas. When a person takes insulin, hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels can be a common occurrence but it can turn out to be fatal especially at night when patients are likely to be unaware of symptoms because they are asleep. So stopping the insulin flow when the blood sugar levels are too low is the most suitable option but how can the patient possibly do that in his sleep! Medical practitioners across the globe believe that automating any insulin delivery can be beneficial for the patient. The emerging artificial pancreas technology seeks to link a glucose monitor, or sensor, to a pump that delivers insulin on
its own as needed, mimicking a healthy pancreas. ¾¾ A ‘smart’ pump A recent study revealed that a Medtronic Inc. insulin pump designed to temporarily shut off was able to reduce the incidence of a potentially fatal condition that occurs when blood-sugar levels fall too low—a key advance in the effort to fully automate the delivery of insulin in diabetes patients. Study results published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 73rd Scientific Sessions report that using an automatic suspending of insulin feature of a sensoraugmented insulin pump from Medtronic, Inc. safely reduces nocturnal hypoglycemia without affecting glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1C). Low Glucose Suspend– a first-of-its-kind automated insulin pump feature unique to the MiniMed® Veo integrated system – automatically suspends insulin delivery temporarily when sensor glucose values reach a pre-set low level. It is also an important step toward Medtronic’s ultimate goal to develop a fully automated artificial pancreas for people with diabetes. A feature in the “smart” pump developed by Minneapolis-based Medtronic stops insulin delivery for two hours when blood sugar drops to a dangerous level. The condition, known as hypoglycemia, can cause seizures, loss of consciousness and death. Use of the suspend function slashed low blood-sugar levels by one-third at night, when patients are largely unaware of the problem or too impaired to respond to it. ¾¾ ASPIRE In-Home study Under an investigational device exemption (IDE) granted by the FDA, the ASPIRE In-Home study compared two MiniMed sensor-augmented insulin pumps (insulin pump with integrated continuous glucose monitoring): one with insulin suspend feature and one without. While a MiniMed integrated insulin pump with continuous glucose monitoring has been proven to provide better glucose control than multiple daily injections without increasing hypoglycemia, this is the first, large in-home study to show the results of the integrated system when an automated action is taken by the pump. ¾¾ Summary of New England Journal of Medicine Publication Patients with type 1 diabetes and documented nocturnal hypoglycemia were randomly assigned

to receive a sensor-augmented insulinpump therapy with or without the Threshold Suspend feature for three months. The primary safety outcome was change in HbA1C, a measurement that shows an individual’s average blood glucose control over a three month period. The primary efficacy outcome was the area under the curve (AUC) for nocturnal hypoglycemic events. AUC is a standard way to summarize two key parameters of hypoglycemic events – the magnitude and the duration. Reported results: ªª The mean AUC for nocturnal hypoglycemic events was 37.5 percent lower in the Threshold Suspend group. ªª Nocturnal hypoglycemic events occurred 31.8% less frequently in the Threshold Suspend group than in the control group. ªª The mean AUC for combined daytime and nighttime hypoglycemic events was 31.4% lower in the threshold-suspend group than in the control group. ªª There was no change in HbA1C in either group. ªª No serious adverse events occurred in the Threshold Suspend group. ¾¾ Conclusion The hypoglycemia-suspension feature is viewed as the first of many incremental technological steps toward the ultimate development of a fully automated artificial pancreas, in which direct communication between sensor and pump normalizes glucose levels without the need for user input, a process dubbed as “closing the loop.” By Medtronic Ms. Anuradha D. Tips to restore FERTILITY EIGHTY million people worldwide suffer from infertility. There is a wealth of information these days regarding assisted reproductive techniques, but sadly enough natural techniques are coming closer to unreality. Traditional and medical wisdom dictates that women should finish having their babies by the time they are 30, for fertility levels drop substantially after this age. 48
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
Women are, now by choice or circumstances postponing pregnancy. To predict a woman’s or man’s reproductive life span and answer that anxiety-inducing question that plagues so many couples these days – how many fertile years are still left? – Is really mystifying. On an average female fertility declines from age 30. The end of fertility is reached at age of 40. And it takes another 5 years before menopause is reached. Have you been trying to conceive without any success for several months. The recommendations are based upon the conclusion of many studies. In some cases, there are genuine medical reasons on the female or the male side. Appropriate treatment to correct the problem with the following tips will set it right. See that a desire of a child does not potentially spoil your relationship: Radha and Ravi were trying to have a baby for years with no success. Each of them thought the other was the cause of the problem. All this because their mind was set upon having a baby. Making love was such a mechanical affair and rest of the time they spent like strangers. Things went so wrong that one day they even thought of separating. If you are having problems conceiving address the issue as a team: When we are in love our body is flooded with love chemicals.
AYURPHARMA
october-2013
The relationship between husband and wife is unique and both partners should foster it and protect it to have a complete married experience. Addressing this issue as a team gives a boost to the confidence and makes thing easier. ªª Avoid alcohol: Alcohol is not pregnancy friendly and this is one of the pleasures you have to give up if you are trying to have a baby. Would-be fathers have to be careful because the quality of the sperms decline and they are not as numerous or as mobile as they have to be. The performance also is poor because they have erectile problems. Mom has to be extra careful because consuming alcohol before conception is harmful and can result in long-term damage. ªª Make love more often: The simplest formula to increase the chances of your conception is to make love more often. Waiting for that statistically worked out date showing high fertile period may not show high prospects especially if you are forcing yourself in doing so. Conceiving a child should not be the sole reason for making love. ªª Keep your environment friendly: A smoke-free lifestyle, building physical activities into your daily routine, using natural food over processed food and discovering activities which help us relax and stay connected with family and friends are some facts to keep a friendly environment. ªª Do not wait too long to plan for a baby: The older the couple becomes the less likely they are to conceive. Factors such as general health, and weight can be just as important as age, a young obese woman might be less capable of conceiving than an older counterpart who is in perfect health. Fertility is at its peak at 25. After 30 it gradually declines. After 40 chances of conception decrease, the quality of egg diminishes and chances of complications in pregnancy rise. The same applies to men too. Exercises good for fertility: Regular performance of exercise is a good hormone regulator and good for fertility. It causes lightness of the body, improves your performance level in all fields, reduces body excess fat, gives you a good physique, pacifies your disturbed bioenergy, adds to your fertility health and promotes metabolism. It stimulates and gives the day a strong start. Perseverance increases chances of conception: Doctors as always remind couples who are keen on starting a family to be patient. Remember that you can increase your chances of conception through perseverance. Boost your libido: If you are feeling tired and romance seems crushed by those day-to-day preoccupations go for well-known herbs like onion and ginger. These drugs hogh not love potions will make you feel hot. It calms tension, stimulates the senses and is great for relieving nausea tiredness and chills. Don’t expect miracles but it does contain genuine active ingredients. Keep your bedroom luscious, alluring and sensual: To promote harmonious and fulfilling sexual communication keep the energy of your bedroom fresh and romantic. Keep your moods high by that gentle touch to each other: Do you remember the first time you and your spouse came together? The act was filled with hugging, kissing, sex talk and fondling each other trying to explore the body. There are very sensual love spots on your partner’s body just like we have beauty spots. Get a good night sleep: This is the time your body regenerates itself in order to be on top form during the day. If you deprive it, the body soon starts malfunctioning. Sleep is absolutely essential for health and must be given prime importance in preparation too. Learn to relax: Work out a relaxation programmed to de-stress your life if you are keen on starting a family. It’s time that stress can trigger a series of physical reactions and is one of the greatest killers of the modern age. Stress disturbs the production of eggs in the ovaries, disturb periods and one also loses the desire to make love. Just say no to drugs: Drugs of all kinds those, prescribed by the doctor or sold over the counter, can have a profound effect on fertility for men and women. If you are not conceiving, consult your doctor: Some medical causes of infertility need treatment. Women may need treatment if they have suffered from menstrual problems, pelvic infections, have undergone gynecological surgery or a complicated case of appendicitis, or endometriosis. Men should see a doctor if they have suffered from under activity of the testicles, testicles not dropping in early adolescence, inflammation of the testicles, venereal diseases, hernia, excessive weight gain or prediabetic. Avoid smoking: Smoking not only causes deadly diseases like cancer but damages the genetic structure of the sperm and ovum.
