Dear You,

Don't forget our signature expos planned for May 15th in Plymouth, May 21st in Wellesely and June 25th in Hanover. Both Healthy Living Magazine and Healthy Living Events have fast become THE “go to” places for New Englanders to learn about the latest in health & spirituality. Look for more on www.MyhealthyLivingMag.com or tune into “The Natural Health Show” on 96.9 FM Sunday Evenings at 5pm.

Who are you hanging with lately? You've figured out by now that it does good things for your process, hanging out with people who are also making Consciousness Matter . . . That's a very good reason to think of spending more time hanging out with us over here at Healthy Living. Though it is just the beginning of spring we have some programs planned for later in the year that are so important – if not spectacular – that we wanted to give you a heads-up now so that you can put them on your transpersonal dance card. On Sunday, August 7th we are very excited to present an afternoon with Joan Borysenko, the Distinguished Pioneer in Integrative Medicine. Her groundbreaking book, Minding the Body, Mending the Mind revolutionized our awareness of the Mind-Body connection a few years back. Joan will share the up-to-the-minute spiritual inspiration coming from her own process in a unique “Reviving Your Life” workshop. Come to learn how to revive your own life energy when the vicissitudes of life and your own trajectory are leaving you overwhelmed or simply weary. Then on Thursday, October 20th, we will be welcoming Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. the renowned medical anthropologist, psychologist and one of the planet's leading teachers of shamanism. Alberto will offer guidance on how we can defuse fear and help usher in a new era of cooperation during his seminar “2012 and Beyond.” His teaching is geared to give you an experience of how we can live in genuine harmony with each other and transitioning environments. With so much worrisome news in the world lately, Joan and Alberto may be just what you need to keep yourself in balance, not forget your true mission and likely get nourishment to help you evolve to the next level.

Fried

Lessons From the Fire

by Joan Borysenko

Life really does have an uncanny way of imitating art. It was Labor Day of 2010. I'd just finished penning the final revisions to my latest book Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive. My husband Gordon and I returned from an early morning hike in the front range of the Rockies where we live and spotted smoke down in the gulch below the house. Within minutes there were flames. Hastily packing up treasured possessions (pictures, family heirlooms, computers, my flannel nighty and Uggs), we loaded up Sophie the Aussie and our poodle puppy Milo. A hundred foot wall of flames raced up the gulch as we said goodbye to our home. The heat was intense and the roar of the conflagration terrifying. We were witnessing the worst wildfire in Colorado history. It burned for almost a week and incinerated 169 homes and more than 7500 acres of pristine beauty. A holocaust of trees and burned out foundations remained as a testament to life's impermanence. Fried was suddenly more than a metaphor for human burnout. We took refuge with friends in Boulder for the first weeks of an exile that lasted for nearly two months. It was several days before we discovered that many of our neighbors' homes had burned down, but that our brave local fire fighters had managed, against

all odds, to save our own. We lost an outbuilding, part of a deck, and most of our view, but the house remained, standing proud in the earthly equivalent of a lunar landscape. At first we grieved its salvation. We didn't want to remain in an area where the magnificent view of lush mountain ridges had been reduced to a graveyard of snags—blackened skeletons of trees left standing like rows of devil's toothpicks. And so many neighbors had lost everything. But in the months that have followed the fire, we began to see with new eyes, to look beyond what was to what is and what can be. That, it turns out, is the same skill set that brings you back to life when personal energy and will are sapped through emotional burnout and you need to remake your life and rekindle your life-force. Berkeley psychologist Christina Maslach's inventory of the syndrome consists of three scales that measure emotional exhaustion; loss of empathy (we healthcare providers experience that as compassion fatigue); and loss of confidence and competence. Burnout is, at its heart, a loss of self and connection to life. Your ability to be present, your creativity, compassion, and humanity simply go missing. It's like some one has stretched a sheet of plastic wrap over the world, sealing away the juice. Life seems parched, dry, and without possibility. Sound like depression? While there are a dozen stages to burnout—beginning with zealous overwork and culminating with emotional and physical collapse—the

Spring 2011

latter stages do mimic depression. But antidepressants won't help. You need to change your course drastically and revive the aliveness, curiosity, joy, and pleasure that make life at its best an exciting adventure. Get thee to a nunnery, a cabin the woods, a place apart to reflect. What gives you life? Where have the fun and joy gone? When did work eat your lunch and making a living eclipse living a life? Where do you betray yourself and say yes when you really mean no? How did you get into a rut from which escape seems impossible? What do you ache for?

Recognize the 12 Stages of Burnout 1: Driven by an ideal 2: Working like a maniac 3: Putting your own needs last 4: Miserable, and clueless as to why 5: The death of values 6: Frustrated, aggressive, and cynical 7: Emotionally exhausted & disengaged 8: “I’ve morphed into what?” 9: “Get away from me!” 10: Inner emptiness 11: Who cares and why bother? 12: Physical and mental collapse Continued on page 5 . . .

Tips for Revival 1. Unplug and take stock. Go away for a few days to a quiet place where you can get some perspective. What's burning you out? Are you a square peg in a round hole? Customer service, for example, is a bad choice for the conflict averse. Are you a caregiver who needs respite? Are you a people pleaser who needs to say no to others and yes to yourself? Is your lifestyle so expensive that working enough to fund it is killing you? 2. Purge what's not necessary.

Pareto's Law states that 20% of one's actions result in 80% of hoped for results. Identify leverage points and energy drains. What serves you and what wastes your time? When I cut down on radio interviews, reviewing people's manuscripts, and doing favors for just about anyone who asked, I had much more time for what really matters. The fire gave me permission to say no without feeling guilty. But you don't need to wait for an excuse to live your own life.

3. Play both for the sake of fun itself and because play changes

your brain state and supports creative thinking. Work smarter by exercising or playing when you feel stale. 4. Pay yourself first. Schedule time for self-care, family, and friends before filling up your calendar with work demands. Waiting for free time to materialize is the same as deciding to save the money that's left at the end of the month. 5. Take a weekly Sabbath. Do absolutely nothing related to work on that day. This is a time-honored strategy for staying sane and enjoying life. 6. Cultivate beginner's mind. The late Zen teacher Suzuki Roshi wrote, "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few."

Alternatives Non-surgical Gastric Banding for Weight Loss

serious complications and unwanted side effects can occur such as nausea, vomiting, band slippage, stoma obstruction, gastric reflux and band deterioration. Sometimes complications may require removal of the gastric band subjecting the patient to another risky surgical procedure.

The use of hypnosis to lose weight is nothing new. But a relatively new technique that has been used successfully in Europe, the UK and Australia has met with recent media attention in the United States. The non-surgical gastric banding procedure using hypnosis is now being done by hypnotists in the US under various names such as gastric mind-banding, hypnosis banding and virtual mind-banding.

procedure, the client will feel as if a gastric band had actually been fitted around their stomach. They will feel full after eating a small portion of food and their stomach will actually shrink over time. As with any attempt to lose weight, the motivation of the client and their willingness to change their habits will determine their success. The hypnotist will work with the client to eat slower so the stomach has more time to signal the brain that it is full. There have been reports of people losing weight in the first week and many people report having a decreased appetite after their first preliminary session.

How it Works Gastric banding through the use of hypnosis is a simulated procedure where the client's subconscious mind allows them to feel as if they actually had a surgical lap banding procedure through laparoscopic surgery. During the procedure, many hypnotists will use simulated sounds and smells of an operating room to make the experience more real. When the client is in a relaxed state the hypnotist will describe the steps that a surgeon would use while performing this operation at a hospital. After undergoing the virtual gastric banding

Is it Safe? Yes! Virtual gastric banding through hypnosis is a safe alternative to undergoing invasive surgery. Invasive surgery may cause

Colon Hydrotherapy prepares for medical procedures. Until now, the only way to prepare for medical procedures on the colon, such as colonoscopies, sigmoidoscopies and barium enemas, meant drinking large quantities of liquid and staying close to bathroom facilities. Many patients delay, postpone, or skip medically necessary procedures altogether in order to avoid the uncomfortable preparation process. An often heard quote is “the preparation was worse than the procedure.” In fact, inadequate bowel preparation is one of the most common reasons polyps are missed during colonoscopy. Rather than ingesting unnecessary solvents into your body colon hydrotherapy is your alternative.

The cleansing process of the large intestine (colon) begins by instilling purified water into the lower bowel through the usage of a disposable rectal nozzle. The water initiates natural peristalsis (movement) of the colon, which initiates proper elimination. Is it safe? Yes. In fact with new colon hydrotherapy equipment treatments are much safer than the common enema. Many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing.

Osteopathic treatment for sciatica relief.

A primary cause of sciatica is a herniated or bulging intervertebral disc that compresses the nerve root before it joins the sciatic nerve. Sciatic pain results from the inflammation of the sciatic nerve and is usually marked by pain and tenderness along the course of the nerve running across the upper buttocks and the rear of the thighs. Osteopathic treatment can help.

Weight distribution from the entire body through the pelvis and down the legs is completely dependent on proper alignment of the sacrum. Therefore, even a small discrepancy in sacral alignment can cause very significant symptoms of pain or restriction in the surrounding areas. Releasing this strain and resetting the bony structure to one of proper alignment will restore normal mechanics to the low back, sacrum and pelvis and restore freedom and ease in this area. Is it Safe? Yes! Osteopathic manipulative medicine is a safe and effective treatment for this condition. Gently releasing strain in the body, aligning the sacrum, spine and pelvis and restoring the resilience of the underlying tissue using osteopathic manipulation very often alleviates this condition completely.

How it works Osteopathic manipulation is a gentle method of manually releasing strain in the body and bringing muscles, joints, bones and fascia (the tissue which surrounds muscles, bones, tendons and organs) into a neutral alignment. For sciatica, a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) will typically treat the sacrum, pelvis, and lumbar spine to address areas where there is pain or restriction of motion.

Styles of Yoga Beyond the Asana

Yoga is more than simple exercise. It may include postures (asanas), energy and breath control (pranayama), meditation, music, philosophy and other approaches. While many people equate the word Hatha with a particular style of yoga, the word actually refers to the physical aspect of yoga – to the asana and pranayama practices.

Classes described as Hatha yoga usually include asanas as well as other teachings. There is a tremendous variety of ways Hatha yoga can be practiced and taught. Common names you may encounter include Ananda, Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Integral, Kripalu, Kundalini, Power, Sivananda and Vinyasa. Each style has unique characteristics.

Used with permission of Yoga Alliance

Meditation is important to all styles and traditions of yoga but is often the least understood aspect of yoga. The art and science of transcending one’s thoughts and liberating the mind, meditation may involve simple breath awareness, chanting or movement. For some, it is the heart of the practice, for others it is integrated with the asanas, often at the beginning and the end of the class. Continued on page 10 . . .

Fitness Yoga: Fitness yoga is a newer expression designed

. . . continued from page 9

People come to yoga for a wide variety of reasons – fitness, stress management, relief from physical or emotional pain. Regardless of their motivation, most credit yoga’s meditative component with allowing them to reach a deeper, more spiritual place in their lives.

Common Styles of Yoga

The following are some common styles of yoga:

Gentle Yoga: Gentle yoga can be as dynamic

as some of the more vibrant styles, yet is gentle on the body. Classes are often multi-level and do not assume prior yoga experience. They include breathing techniques, warm-ups and basic postures to increase mind-body connection, self-awareness and selfconfidence.

Yoga Flows: Yoga flows are more invigorating.

Postures are linked in a flow and provide some aerobic components while also improving strength and coordination. The classes assume a participant begins with a certain degree of strength and endurance.

Power Yoga: This dynamic yoga style includes specific sequences designed to build strength and stamina. These classes are often recommended for people with some familiarity of the basic postures.

to incorporate traditional yoga postures in a form common to most fitness clubs. Students warm up, practice more strenuous postures and then cool down. They tone the body, especially the core, and increase flexibility, balance and mind-body awareness.

Specialty Yoga: Yoga can also be customized for the special needs of a broad spectrum of groups including expectant mothers, seniors and children, as well as for those battling life-threatening diseases or debilitating chronic conditions. Specialized training is important for teachers who work with these groups. Spiritually-Oriented Yoga: Originally, Hatha yoga was primarily a tool for spiritual growth as well as for physical well-being. Modern styles that emphasize the spiritual dimension of yoga practice tend to involve slower movement and often include meditation practice. Therapeutic Yoga: Yoga therapy is the adaptation and application of yoga practices and techniques to help those facing health challenges manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality and improve attitude.

Yoga Alliance® is the national education and support organization for yoga in the United States. Standing in Your Own Two Shoes

by Adyashanti

The real search isn’t a search into tomorrow, or to anywhere other than now. It’s starting to look into the very nature of this moment. In order to do that, you have to

“stand in your own two shoes,” as my teacher used to say. What she meant by “standing in your own two shoes” is you have to look clearly into your own experience. Stop trying to have someone else’s experience. Stop chasing freedom or happiness, or even spiritual enlightenment. Stand in your own shoes, and examine closely: What’s happening right here and right now? Is it possible to let go of trying to make anything happen? Even in this moment, there may be some suffering, there may be some unhappiness, but even if there is, is it possible to no longer push against it, to try to get rid of it, to try to get somewhere else? I understand that our instinct is to move away from what’s not comfortable, to try to get somewhere

better, but as my teacher used to say, “You need to take the backward step, not the forward step.” The forward step is always moving ahead, always trying to attain what you want,

whether it’s a material possession or inner peace. The forward step is very familiar: seeking and more seeking, striving and more striving, always looking for peace, always looking for happiness, looking for love. To take the backward step means to just turn around, reverse the whole process of looking for satisfaction on the outside, and look at precisely the place where you are standing. See if what you are looking for isn’t already present in your experience. So, again, to lay the groundwork for awakening, we must first let go of struggling. You let go by acknowledging that the end of struggle is actually present in your experience now. The end of struggle is peace. Even if your ego is struggling, even if

Spring 2011

you’re trying to figure this out and “do it right,” if you really look, you might just see that struggle is happening within a greater context of peace, within an inner stillness. But if you try to make stillness happen, you’ll miss it. If you try to make peace happen, you’ll miss it. This is more like a process of recognition, giving recognition to a stillness that is naturally present. We’re not bringing struggle to an end. We’re not trying to not struggle anymore. We’re just noticing that there is a whole other dimension to consciousness that, in this very moment, isn’t struggling, isn’t resentful, isn’t trying to get somewhere. You can literally feel it in your body. You can’t think your way to not struggling. There isn’t a three– point plan of how not to struggle. It’s really a one–point plan: Notice that the peace, this end of struggling, is actually already present. The process is therefore one of recognition. We recognize that there is peace now, even if your mind is confused. You may see that even when you touch upon peace now, the mind is so conditioned to move away from it that it will try to argue with the basic fact of peace’s existence within you: “I can’t be at peace yet because I have to do this, or that, or this question hasn’t been answered, or that question hasn’t been answered, or so–and–so hasn’t apologized to me.” There are all sorts of ways that the egoic mind can insist that something needs to happen, something needs to change, continued on page 12 . . .

Healthy Living Magazine 11

. . . continued from page 11

in order for you to be at peace. But this is part of the dream of the mind. We’re all taught that something needs to change for us to experience true peace and freedom. Just imagine for a moment that this isn’t true. Even though you may believe that it’s true, just imagine for a moment: What would it be like if you didn’t need to struggle, if you didn’t need to make an effort to find peace and happiness? What would that feel like now? And just take a

moment to be quiet and see if peace or stillness is with you in this moment. Excerpted from “Falling Into Grace: Insights on the End of Suffering”. Adyashanti, author of “Falling Into Grace”, “True Meditation”, and The “End of Your World” dares all seekers of peace and freedom to take the possibility of liberation seriously. His spontaneous and direct teachings have opened the door for many seekers to awaken to their true nature and live an awakened life. For more info log onto www.adyashanti.org

Forgiveness is the action we take to let go of grudges and bitterness. Forgiving leads us down the path of healing and inner peace. The violet would not share its magnificent fragrance if not stepped on and crushed. Through out our lives humans are stepped on and crushed frequently, not allowing our fragrance of true beauty to shine. Having the ability to forgive ourselves and others moves us into a level of higher connection with our true self. This aligns us with true love and happiness , allowing us to share our fragrance with others. As the flower unfurls petals, unfurl your heart, learn to forgive and live in full bloom. Gale Barton, owner of Sweetferns florals offers flower workshops to inform all of the important roll flowers have in our lives. Working with flowers allows us to disconnect from the hectic pace of life and ease into a higher level of self-connection, promoting mind body wellness. New Healthy Business Highlight! Harkening Back to the Days of the Milkman! South Shore families can now get fresh organic produce delivered right to their homes! This is thanks to founders Pamela and Mark Denholm, who have always been passionate about access to freshly harvested and organically grown produce. They both worked full time and struggled to get to farmers markets and CSA pickup points, and since other families were struggling too they started South Shore Organics, an exciting initiative which works with local and organic farms to bring food from farm to table for conscientious residents who want a food source they can trust. “Everything is certified organic, or locally, sustainably grown” says Pam Denholm.

There are many reasons to eat and buy local: • keeps money in the local economy; • preserves family farms; • strengthens local communities; • reduces oil-dependent transportation costs; • protects our local landscapes; • helps to ensures that fresh, healthy food stays available and affordable to all;

What’s On Your Skin?

Replace Those Harsh Cosmetic Chemicals with Mother Nature

by Marla Bosworth

Are you a cosmetic label reader? Do

How can you avoid these ingredients?

you know about each ingredient you’re putting on your skin? Many consumers know to avoid products containing petroleum and sodium laurel (or laureth) sulfate.

Simply turn to Mother Nature for simple skincare products. There are hundreds of fabulous natural skincare remedies and ingredients. Here are a few of my top pics:

However, here are a few other lesser known ingredients that you may want to add to your “ban” list: • Mercury (often listed as mercury, thimerosol, mercuric oxide, phenyl mercuric acetate, and phenyl mercuric benzoate) is known to cause damage to the brain and diminish function. • Phthalates (listed as phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate. These toxins can show up listed simply as "fragrance") are tiny plasticizers can cause infertility and are found in fragrances. • Hydroquinone (listed as such) is a skin bleaching ingredient can cause ochronosis, an irreversible skin condition causing black raised bumps on the skin. Found in skin lighteners, anti-agers, hair color/bleach, SPF products, concealer, acne treatments and toners. • Formaldehyde (listed as formaldehyde, formalin, formic aldehyde, Merthaldehyde, methanal, methyl aldehyde, oxomethane and oxymethylene) is known to cause respiratory irritation as well as cancer.

• Healing plant oils such as argan, apricot kernel, jojoba and evening primrose are fabulous for faces and bodies of all ages (babies, teens and adults). • For teens and adults, essential oils of lavender, rose geranium, carrot seed oil and tea tree blended at 1% or less with carrier oils are wonderful for the face and body.

• Use Vitamin E on the face as it soothes, balances, hydrates and helps to prevent aging and scarring. • Another beneficial natural ingredient is goatsmilk (powdered or fresh). Goatsmilk’s alpha hydroxy acids contribute to anti-aging and rejuvenation of the skin. Simply whip up a mask or exfoliating scrub with the powdered or dry milk. Tip 1. Do not miss breakfast! U. Mass. researchers recently analyzed the eating habits of 500 subjects and found that by missing breakfast their risks of obesity increased by 450%! A breakfast of 40% protein - 30% carbs - 30% fat is recommended. Tip 2. Get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night! Montefiore Medical Center sleep expert Dr. Michael Thorpy tells us that less sleep interferes with the body's carbohydrate metabolism. His research shows that insufficient sleep tends to spike the blood sugar putting the body into a fat storage cycle.

Tip 3. Take 1/4 cup of nuts and seeds for your mid AM and mid PM snacks every day! Purdue University researchers discovered that this snack will satisfy the appetite for up to 90 minutes longer than any other dietary option.

QuitForSmoking Good!

Cigarettes are wellknown for their chemical load that is deposited into our lungs and into our bloodstream. Strangely as it seems, our bodies become dependent on this toxic load being there at fairly consistent levels. When we don’t have it coming in, we physiologically crave those toxins in our lungs and in our bloodstream. That is why so many smokers light up immediately upon awakening. Some brands of cigarettes are believed to contain hundreds of ingredients, many of which are known toxic chemicals! We think of cigarettes as rolled tobacco, but they are really so much worse. Homeopathy is a medical system designed to stimulate the body’s inner healing processes to regain harmony and balance. Homeopathy is based upon the concept that very dilute amounts of plant (or mineral) medicines can alleviate the symptoms of illnesses that very high doses of the plant (or mineral) may actually cause. This is the theory called ‘like cures like’. There are several excellent homeopathic remedies that can immediately eliminate the urge for a cigarette, and they tend to work best on those emotional cravings that are so challenging to get through. The following is a list of homeopathic remedies to permanently and successfully eliminate the smoking habit.

So, YOU’RE ready to quit?

L OV E R S "My veterinarian has suggested that my pet named Sugar lose weight. Do you have any suggestions that might be helpful?

Answer:

”Obesity is a severe and debilitating illness. It is the most common nutritional disease in pets and people; estimates suggest that up to 45% of dogs and up to 13% of cats are obese (many doctors think these estimates are quite low judging by the number of obese pets they see every day in practice.) Current medical opinion states that a pet is obese if it weighs 15% or more over its ideal weight. While pet owners often use the pet's actual weight to gauge obesity, it is probably more accurate to use a body composition score. Body composition, measured by looking at the pet from the top and sides and feeling the

areas over the ribs and spine more accurately reflects obesity than a certain magical number. Keep in mind that most obese pets are made, not born, that way. Many owners encourage begging and give too many treats and snacks. While people who constantly reward these begging behaviors believe they are being kind and loving, they are actually killing their pets with kindness. Problems that are associated with obesity in pets and people are numerous and include orthopedic problems (including arthritis, ruptured ligaments, and disk disease,) difficulty breathing, reduced capacity for exercise (and in severe cases any movement at all,) heat intolerance, increased chance for complications due to drug therapy (it is more difficult to accurately dose medications in obese pets,) cardiac problems, hypertension, and cancer. When you keep in mind that the excess body fat occurs in the body cavities of the chest and abdomen (often being deposited there first) as well as under the skin (what we see as "fat",) it is not surprising all of the medical problems that can be associated with obesity.

Because diseases such as hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus can be associated with obesity, obese pets should be screened for these disorders prior to treatment for obesity The treatment of obesity involves restricting calories and increasing the metabolic rate via a controlled exercise program. Using store bought "Lite" diets is not usually adequate, as these diets are not designed for weight loss but rather weight maintenance. Additionally, since many store bought diets may contain chemicals, by-products, and fillers, they would not be a part of a holistic pet program. Homemade restricted calorie diets would be the first choice

for dietary therapy for obese pets (see my book The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats for an example of a homemade diet for overweight pets;) processed "obesity-management" diets available through veterinarians would be the second best choice as some of these diets may also contain chemicals, by-products, and fillers. These "obesitymanagement" diets are used until the target weight is obtained, then replaced with a homemade maintenance diet if possible or a more natural and healthy pet food. Foods which increase metabolism such as vegetables which are high in fiber are included in weight loss diets. Fiber, contained in vegetables, decreases fat and glucose absorption; fluctuating glucose levels cause greater insulin release. Since insulin is needed for fat storage, decreased or stable levels are preferred. Fiber also binds to fat in the intestinal tract and increases movement of the food in the intestines, which is of benefit to the obese pet.

There are several natural therapies that may be helpful as part of the treatment of obesity in some pets. Suggested therapies include chromium, carnitine, herbs (cayenne, ginger, and mustard,) hydroxycitric acid (HCA,) white bean extract, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG,) and coenzyme Q-10. These natural treatments are widely used with variable success but have not been thoroughly investigated and proven at this time. In general, they work to boost metabolism, inhibit carbohydrate digesting enzymes, maintain normal blood insulin levels (which promotes the burning of fat,) and control appetite. Finally, as with people, a regular program of supervised exercise is also important for pets on a weight reduction program. Using these ideas will help your pet get that old, slim figure back!” Shawn Messonnier DVM Author, the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats. How Full is Your Jellybean Jar?

A lesson about your energy level. by Trisha Matthies The Healing Moon Wellness Center

If I were to ask you, what is your “energy level”, what would you answer? Would you understand my question? It is actually a simple concept that refers to the amount of personal energy you have within your body. This energy helps you to carry out your everyday activities physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your energy level is effected by the amount of energy you give out and the amount of energy you receive. It is very important to be aware of your energy level. If your energy is flowing properly you are able to function in daily life in a positive, balanced manner. For example, you feel energetic, you think clearly, you sleep well, you feel healthier, and you have the ability to truly relax. You ultimately view and live your life in a happy, healthy, positive manner. However, if your energy is blocked, depleted or out of balance you do not function as well as you should. Emotionally you could become overly sensitive,

24 Healthy Living Magazine

frustrated, anxious or depressed. Mentally your thoughts can become irrational, unclear or overwhelming. Physical signs of imbalance may include fatigue, insomnia, high blood pressure, and discomfort from backaches, neck aches or headaches, as well as the potential to develop more serious health conditions. My advice to you is simply to be aware of your energy. Most often women give and give and give of themselves. That is certainly a wonderful trait, but if someone gives out more energy than they receive, it can create an imbalance, and you can become drained very quickly. I ask you to think about your energy as a jar full of jellybeans. All the beautiful colored jellybeans are positive energy; energy like compassion, love, nurturing, motivation, and patience. And all the black jellybeans are the negative energies we hold such as stress, frustration, sadness, and anxiety. Starting in the morning, imagine that every time you give your energy to someone you give them a few colored

Spring 2011

jellybeans. You help the kids off to school ... jellybeans; you head off to work and deal with difficult people... lots of jelly beans. In addition, you have a relationship to tend to, friends or family members in need, and the house hold to run, shopping, cleaning, cooking . . . a lot more colored jelly beans are leaving your jar! Now imagine getting up the next day, and the next … how many jellybeans are left in your jar at the end of the week? And how many of those are black? Do you continue to give jellybeans even if all you have left are black jellybeans? If you allow your jellybean jar to get too low, you are allowing yourself to become depleted, drained and out of balance. And if you continue to give your energy from the black jellybeans, you are giving to others out of resentment, frustration, and exhaustion. Now ask yourself, how do you refill your jellybean jar? There are many wonderful ways to refill and restore your energy and your jellybeans. Such holistic modalities such as Meditation, Reiki, Crystal Healing, Yoga, or Massage focus on your energy or your chakra system. They help to restore your energy by

bringing vitality back into your body, mind, and spirit. These treatments are effective methods for you to receive nurturing, rest, and relaxation all at once. But there are other ways you can refill your jellybean jar. When you allow yourself time to break from everyday stress, you allow yourself a chance to regroup. Most women do not believe they have the time to enjoy this simple pleasure, guilt free. During a busy day, I encourage you to take a 10-minute break to practice some deep breathing, meditate, or enjoy a warm cup of herbal tea. Chances are, this brief diversion will help refill your energy as well as your spirit. Another delightful way of raising your energy and refilling your jar is by being with a nurturing friend or family member who revitalizes your energy and does not drain you. And do not forget the basic steps you can follow such as eating healthy food, drinking plenty of water, receiving proper rest, meditating, exercising and moving your body, and remembering to laugh and play. I hope you try some of these methods to refill your energy and refill your jar full of beautiful colorful jellybeans. Schools of Massage, Polarity, Aesthetics New England’s oldest school of Energy Based Therapies Training Successful Professionals Since 1976.

Ipswich | Plymouth | Westboro

Our graduates say it best:

“I want you to know that everywhere I have interviewed, the Spa Tech diploma makes all the difference – to the point where people have said they won’t consider anyone from certain local schools. Feel free to use this email as a testimony. You guys are the best! Even at State Boards you know exactly who was from Spa Tech because they were completely prepared.” ~ Jessica (Class of 2006)

You deserve an education that honors who you are and who you are becoming. A great education is spiritually transforming: You overcome your limitations and realize your highest potential, at the same time you learn the foundation and skills to succeed. The next step to fulfilling your future is to call for a no obligation, information interview with our Career Advisor at 800-262-8530. We look forward to meeting you and learning about your future. Programs take from 4 to 15 months, depending on your schedule: Full-time, mother’s hours or part-time evenings. Accredited. Financial Aid available for qualified students.

770 Hour Holistic Massage Program I’m sure you have questions. All schools claim to be the best but what is the reality? The only way to know is to visit the schools, talk to the students (a must) and also talk to employers if Nancy Risley, RPP, RPE, Founder and Co-Owner you can. These are the

people who really understand the quality of the programs. As for me, I have loved this field for over 35 years. There is nothing like the feeling of helping people to feel and look better. As a profession that allows flexibility to raise children or follow additional interests, it supports life long learning and a

deep sense of satisfaction. And if you are good, it provides prosperity that’s in harmony with who you are. I personally invite you to visit the school to learn more. I look forward to meeting you.
