HOME There are many traditional and contemporary ways to decorate for the holidays both inside and outside the home. Christmas is arguably the most popular decorating holiday, but having decorations that are re-usable for other holidays is a great idea. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Consider a wide variety of lighting options such as: • Rope lights, icicle lights or net lights for bushes or trees • Try multiple function light sets that will do amazing things • Consider various sizes of bulbs from big, small, sphere, round or warm, cool or multiple colors • Pathway, spotlight or window lighting Use LED lighting options as they are energy efficient and last for years Find paper, bows, boxes or bags to make presents pretty Use ceramic buildings and accessories to create a Christmas village 2

Holiday Decorating

Small and large outdoor inflatables Others include ornaments, wreathes, garland, tinsel, stockings, trees, tree skirts and more. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Don’t forget to plan ahead and have tools readily available when decorating plus ladders, drills, adhesive strips, tape, nails, gutter hooks and anything else you might need Color makes a world of difference when choosing decorations for the holidays Choose Christmas decorations that have more of a wintry feel that can be used for a longer time frame For other holidays, consider the multiuse capabilities of decorations that can be used for birthday parties or other events Your Next Home • December 2018

HOME There are many options for you to choose from, but the right options can often depend where you want to put your fireplace. Creating a plan and researching your options is the smart way to start. ELECTRIC FIREPLACES • Do not require venting as there is no source of combustion and no heat loss through a chimney. • Many decorative styles to fit your needs and room. • Great for supplemental heat. LP & NATURAL GAS • Great source of supplemental heat. • Provide the look of a wood burning fireplace or wood stove without the mess or work. • Can be either vented or vent free. WOOD FIREPLACES • Helps to lower your heating bills. • The ambiance, romance and scent of a wood fire are other great reasons to install on in your home. VENT FREE FIREPLACES • Typically cost less than vented fireplaces to operate and install. Have a 99.7% efficiency rating, and utilize the air already in the home. The burner in the gas heater is designed to burn and produce virtually no carbon monoxide or other hazardous fumes that need to be vented outside the home. • Vent free products are not recommended for use in elevations over 5,000 feet. • There are more limitations on Vent Free fireplaces due to local codes. 4

Fireplaces

DIRECT VENT FIREPLACES • Direct vent fireplaces are gas operated and heat rated. • Vented needs a specific vent system to bring in and introduce fresh outside air and vent the exhaust from the unit outside the home. • High efficiency and convenient installation are two of its features. Can be used practically anywhere Low cost installation due to compact and easy install Due to the sealed combustion technology, no full chimney is needed Glass panel provides extra safety assurance • Always check with the local code authority to get a list of acceptable types of units that may be installed in your homes or garages OUTDOOR FIREPLACES There are many varieties to choose from including: No cut block projects Portable fireplaces Fire rings Your Next Home • December 2018

HOME The Earth’s elements can be scary! Winter brings heavy snow, rain, sleet and ice that can knock out power in an instant. Be prepared by stocking up on emergency items that can easily be accessible. BASIC SURVIVAL ITEMS Candles, matches, flashlights and batteries Canned food, can opener, snacks and water • You will need enough non-perishable food to last a few days • Canned and powdered food are good for long-term storage Battery-powered radio & cell phone charger Things to pass the time such as books, magazines, cards or board games. First aid kit, blankets, foot and hand warmers Extra socks, hats, mittens, blankets, jackets and warm weather apparel • You may already have these items, but remember you will need enough blankets to keep everyone warm without any heat and in adverse conditions Snow removal equipment including shovels plus rock salt and sand Pet supplies such as food, litter box, blanket and water 6

Be Ready For Winter Storms

WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Insulate walls and attics Weather-strip doors and windows Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic Insulate pipes and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing Clear rain gutters and repair roof leaks in order to avoid clogging and flooding Cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or buildings during a storm ANTICIPATE A LONG POWER OUTAGE Eat perishable foods first, keeping canned goods for lengthy outages Leave the refrigerator doors closed during short outages and use the cold weather to store some things outside Have some entertainment available that does not involve electricity Your Next Home • December 2018

HOME One of the more common causes of back injuries during the winter months is snow removal. Using the wrong body mechanics when shoveling snow can put undue stress on the spine and lead to muscle strains, falls, or more serious back injuries. These injuries can be prevented if proper precautions are taken. REMINDERS BEFORE YOU BEGIN • Warm-up your muscles. Shoveling can be a vigorous activity. • Pace yourself. Take frequent breaks and prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath or other signs of a heart attack, stop shoveling/blowing and seek emergency care. • Use a shovel that is comfortable for your height and strength. Do not use a shovel that is too heavy or too long for you. • Try to push the snow instead of lifting it. If you must lift, do it properly. • Do not throw the snow over your shoulder or to the side. This requires a twisting motion that stresses your back. SNOW BLOWERS A snow blower can be a useful tool for removing snow quickly. But while often more convenient, they can also be more dangerous than shoveling. Be aware of the proper techniques of using a snow blower and read the user manual and pay attention to labels on the machine. 10

Snow Removal Safety

• Never stick your hands in the snow blower! If snow jams the snow blower, stop the engine and use a solid object to clear wet snow or debris from the chute. Beware of the brief recoil of motor and blades that occurs after the machine has been turned off. • Do not leave the snow blower unattended when it is running. • Add fuel before starting the snow blower. Never add fuel when the engine is running or hot. • Stay away from the engine. It can become very hot and burn unprotected flesh. • Watch the snow blower cord. If you are operating an electric snow blower, be aware of where the power cord is at all times. SIDEWALKS & DRIVEWAYS It’s also important to keep ice clear from your sidewalks and driveways to prevent accidents. Ice melt and all-purpose sand can add traction to these surfaces, plus ice chippers work well. Your Next Home • December 2018

HOME Many people enjoy watching birds, especially during the winter months when we’re inside the house more often. If you’re looking to attract birds to your yard, perhaps viewing them through your windows, a combination of the right feeders, food, suet and bird houses will help create the desired impact. FEEDER SIZE - Select a feeder that has a good size capacity and provides an ample supply of food. If you can’t settle for one, buy multiple feeders so the birds will be well set in the wintertime. COVERED AREA - Birds like to have cover and shelter. Place feeders near cover such as dense evergreens to provide birds shelter from storms and from predators. CHOOSE WISELY - Place a black oil sunflower mix that contains a high proportion of black oil sunflower in the feeder. This type of mix is better for the birds because it contains a high fat and protein content. Birds need more energy to keep warm in the wintertime. KEEP THEM WELL FED - Provide an all-you-caneat buffet for the birds by keeping the feeder full. Typically, birds come to the feeder early in the morning to refuel after a cold night and at the end of the day to stock up on necessary calories. 12

Attract Birds To Your Yard

ADD SUET - If you want to attract some woodpeckers or nuthatches, add some suet to your feeder. Suet is a high calorie fat that is heated and cooled to form suet cakes. The cakes often include sunflowers, berries, fruit, and nuts. Not only is suet high in fat and protein, but it can be enjoyed by birds in the winter and summer. Some suet cakes are meltresistant which allow birds to enjoy suet any time of the year. FILL OFTEN - Do not stop filling your feeder in the middle of winter. Birds become accustomed to using your feeders as a food source so you cannot stop feeding. During severe weather, birds depend on your feeder. If you are unable to fill your feeder, ask a neighbor or friend for help. CHECK IN - Shovel snow off and around the feeder after winter snowstorms. Birds are unable to access the food from the feeder or the fallen seed on the ground after it snows. Your Next Home • December 2018

Easy DIY Birdseed Ornaments

WHAT YOU NEED: • A cookie sheet • Wax paper • A mixing bowl • 3/4 cup flour • 1/2 cup water • 3 tablespoons corn syrup • 4 cups birdseed • Cookie cutters • Cooking spray • Straws • Twine • Scissors WHAT TO DO: 1. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. 2. Add flour, water, and corn syrup together in a mixing bowl. Make sure it’s well combined. 3. Once the liquid mixture is smooth and creamy, slowly add the birdseed. Mix to combine. 4. Pour the mixture onto the cookie sheet. Using your hands, press the mixture until it’s flat and even. The birdseed dough should be roughly 1/2’’ to 3/4’’ thick. 5. Coat the edges of your cookie cutters with cooking spray. Then, press the cookie cutters into the birdseed mixture. 6. Next, poke a hole (for hanging) through each ornament with a straw. Allow the birdseed to rest in the cookie cutters for 8 hours. 7. Once set, remove your birdseed ornaments from the cookie cutters. 8. Loop a piece of twine through each ornament. Then, head outside and hang them up on the nearest tree. In no time at all, wild birds will stop by to nibble on these pretty pieces. 14
