ThePlainviewboysbasketballprogram hasexperiencedalotofchangeoverthe pastthreeyears.
Themostsignificantisprobablythe changeofheadcoaches.
HeadCoachRobOgleisthethirdhead coachinasmanyyears.Hedoesn’tplan ongoinganywhere,though.Hehopesto developanewculture,startingwiththis year’scoregroup.
“Wewanttobeknownasablue-collarteam.Wewanttoplaygood,solid defenseandlimitouropponentstoone possessionpertripdownthe floor,”Ogle said.
Oglemightbeafamiliarnametosome aroundthearea.Heisaseasonedhead coachwhospentthelastsixyearsatLittlefieldbeforetakingthePlainviewjob. His25-yearcoachingcareeralsoincludes stopsatDenverCityandBrownfield.His coachingstyleissimilartoPlainview’s previouscoaches,Drew Thompsonand MarcPuente.
Hebelievesthefamiliarityoftheir coachingstyleswillhelpplayersquickly buyin.
Thisseason,heaimstomakeanimprint ontheprogramashetakesoveraroster thatgraduatedthreestartersfromayear ago.
Unfortunately,theBulldogswillbe withoutJacobyPorterthisseasonaswell. HetorehisACLearlyduringfootball seasonand,accordingtoOgle,willlikely beoutforthemajorityoftheyear.
Hewasastarterayearagoandwith himoutofthepicture,juniorMaddox Ellisistheonlyreturningstarterfrom the2022-2023season. TheBulldogshave severalkeyrolesto fill.
“We’regoingtobeyoungandinexperiencedasawhole,”Oglesaid. Elliswillbethemostseasonedplayer ontheBulldogs’rosterthisseason.A varsitystartersincefreshmanyear,hehas
playedastheprimaryballhandlerforthe Bulldogsthepastcoupleofseasons.Ogle expectsEllistotakeonabigleadership roleastheseasongetsunderway.
“(Maddox)handlestheballtremendously.He’sagoodshooterandhe’sgoing tobeoneofourworkhorsesthisyearfor sure,”Oglesaid.
“Beingthemosttenuredplayer,leadershipisgoingtobesomethingthatIfeel likehe’llbeabletoprovideforsomeof ouryoungerkidsandsoforth.
Butforsure,he’sdefinitelyoneguythat we’regoingtotrytogetthemostoutof and(whois)goingtobegettingalotof minuteseachandeverynight.”
Theotherreturningvarsitymember whoplayedsignificantminutesasa freshmanwasDominicFulton.He playedheavyminuteswiththestarting unitandstartedafewgamesthroughout theyear.
Heplayednearlyeverypositiononthe floorlastyearashebecamecomfortable withthevarsitygame.Fultonis6-foot-3 andhaslongarmsthathelphimgethis shotoff overtallerdefendersorbecome ashotblockerinthepaint.Ogleplansto usehiminavarietyofwaysagainthis yearashebecomesafocalpointonboth sidesoftheball.
“OneofthethingsthatI’vebeentrying toselltohimisthatifwecangetyou guardingorbeingguardedbyasmaller guy,wecanisolateyoudownlowand takeadvantageofthatbecausewedon’t havealotofsize,butheissoversatile thathecanplaybothinthepaintandon theperimeter,”Oglesaid.
DuringPlainview’sfall-ballleague,Fultonwasrelieduponasthego-toscorer intheoffense,CoachOglenoted.Heexpectsthattocarryintotheseason.Fulton isexpectedtoplaysignificantminutes alongsideEllis.
Othervarsityreturnersincludesenior IanLopezandjuniorsJordanPorterand EstebanArmendariz.

Fortwostraightseasons,thePlainview LadyBulldogsreachedthepostseason butweretakendowninthebi-district round.Withnearlytheentirevarsity rosterreturningfromayearago, HeadCoachAdrianAlfarobelievesthis year’steamiscapableofmakingadeep playoff push.
“Wehaveaspecialgrouphere,”Alfarosaid.“Ireallyseeusmakingadeep run." Thesky’sthelimitforthisteam,he added.
TheLadyBulldogsreturnfourstarters fromthe2022-2023teamincluding first all-districtselectionsMadyWilliamsand TaylorWallace. Theduoplayedtogether overthesummerforAAUteamHoop10 United.
Alfarohasseennotableimprovement frombothandislookingforWilliamsto becomemoreofadistributor.
“Oneofthethingsthatshehasshown isthatforthemostpart,shecanscore atwill.Shecanshoottheballreallywell. Shecanattackattherimand finish.
So,oneofthethingsthatwe’vetold hernowisthat‘you’vegotaprettygood supportingcastaroundyouandwe’vegot togettheminvolved,’”Alfarosaid.“She’s reallysteppedupinthesummerandrecentlyinpractice,showingthatshe’snot justascorerandthatshemakesothers aroundherbetter.”
Wallacewaseffectiveonbothsidesof theballlastseasonasarim-protector andwasago-toscorer.Alfaroislooking forhertoonceagainbringherenergy onthecourt,anenergythat firesupher teammatesaroundher.
“OnethingthatIthinkmightbemisconstruedisthatwithTaylor,she’san emotionalplayer.Whensomepeoplesee that,somemaymistakethatforattitude but(Taylor)isjustacompetitor.

Eachofthemplayedanumberofdifferentrolesthroughouttheyearandrotated inthestartinglineuplastyear. Theyalso havefreshmanMaribelMontelongo, someoneAlfarobelieveswillbringenergytothisyear’sroster.
“Idon’tfeellikesheevergetstired,”Alfarosaid.“Duringtheoffseasonshewas doingcrosscountryworkoutsandthen she’dturnaround,cometoourstrength andconditioningworkoutsafter.She wasn’tlastorinthemiddleeither,she wasalwaysoneofthetopkidsto finish.”
AllofthosepiecesaregoingtobenecessaryastheLadyBulldogshaveatough scheduleinfrontofthem. TheLady Bulldogs’non-districtscheduleincludes thelikesofNo.11rankedSeminole(4A) andLubbockMonterey(5A)andtheir districtincludesNo.3rankedAmarillo High(5A)andNo.22rankedAmarillo Tascosa(5A).
PlainviewwillalsoattendtheCaprock ClassicTournamentandtheCowtown Tournament,twotournamentsthat typicallyattractmultipletopteamsacross Texasandsurroundingstates. Alfarobelievesthathisgirlsarereadyfor thechallengeaheadofthem.

TheFloydadaWhirlwindswereone gameshyoftheir firststateplayoff berth inprogramhistoryayearagoastheyfell intheregional finalround. TheWhirlwindsareprimedonceagainthisyearto makeadeeptournamentrunbutwitha newheadcoachonthesidelinesleading theway.
KarsonHembreewastabbedasthe nextheadcoachforFloydadaafterthe departureofEddieWalkerIIIoverthe summer.Hembreewasanassistantat Plainviewforthepastfouryearspriorto takingonthejobandalsospenttimein Pampa.
FromhisinitialconversationwithFloydadaAthleticDirectorJ.R.Compton,he understoodthetypeofprogramhewas gettingreadytotakeoverandwelcomed theopportunity.
“There’sbeenalotofsuccesshereinthe pastcoupleyears,soIthinkitwasagood opportunitytogetmyfeetwetandreally jumpin,”Hembreesaid.“Imeantheir runlastyearmakesthingsreallyexciting. Theybringbackfourreallykeyplayers off ofthatregionaltournamentteamand notmanyguysgettojumpintotheir first headcoachingexperiencewiththose typesoftalentedguys.”
TheWhirlwindsreturnedafewmajorpiecesfromtheirtournamentruna yearago.TexasAssociationofBasket-
ballCoachesAll-RegionselectionsTy HendersonandBraunHobbswillreturn nextseasonfortheirjunioryear.Firstteamall-districtmemberAidenTrevino (junior)andsecond-teamall-district teammateHagenHinsley(senior)will returnaswell.
Floydadalostitsleadingscorer,Abran Castillo,tograduationlastyear.Hewasa TABCall-stateselectionandco-district MVP,amongotherrecognitions.Hembreebelievesthatwhilemanyoftheguys willcontributeoffensively,Hobbsand Hendersonwillleadthecharge.
“We’vegot fivetosixguysthatcangive usalittlebitofascoringrunandthat’s goingtobeourstrength,”hesaid.
OneofthestaplesforFloydadalastyear wastheirpaceofplay. Theyconstantly pressuredteamsinafull-courtpressand madealotofdefenseintotheiroffenseby forcingturnoversandgettingtransition baskets.Hembreesaidthatwillbeafocal pointonceagainthisyear.
Unlikelastyear,theWhirlwindsarenot consideredanunderdogthisseason. The TexasAssociationofBasketballCoaches rankedFloydadasixthin2Aintheirpreseasonrankingsthankstotheirperformancelastyearandthepiecesreturning.
“Ithinkexpectationsarealwaysthere whenyoucomeintoaprogramlikethis,” Hembreesaid.
HebelievestheWhirlwindswillbe readyforthechallengeastheyparticipateintheChildressTournamentand
CaprockClassic,twotournamentsthat typicallybringoutafewstateranked teamsfrommultipleclasses. Hembreesaidit’scrucialthattheWhirlwindshittheirstrideduringthosegames sotheycanbereadyfortheirdistrict schedule. Theyarethefavoritestowin thedistrict,butHembreeisn’ttakingany ofthosegameslightly.
“Ithinkthere’snoreasonthatIdon’t thinkwegetintodistrictplayanddon’t havetheexpectationtowinnightinand nightoutandgiveourselvesachanceto winadistrictchampionshipandthengo toplayforsomegoldballs,”hesaid.“Beforethat,though,wehavealotofstepsto goalongthewaybeforewegetthere.” Lastseasonoverallrecord:36-6

Lastyear’sLadyWindssquadwentonaCinderellarunwithsevenstraightwinstoend theregularseasonbeforeclaimingsecondin aloadedeight-teamdistrict. Theywentonto takedownVegaintheirbi-districtroundand fellinthearearoundtoaGruversquadthat wasthestaterunnerup.
Nearlytheentirecoreoflastyear’steamis returningonceagainastheylooktomakea deepplayoff runandtakeashotatthedistrict title.
“We’regoingtobeabletocontinuetobuild off whatwedidlastyear,”FloydadaHead CoachAdamZepedasaid.“I’mexcited.We’re amoreexperiencedteamthisyearwithmore depthandleadership.”

andgraduatedonlytwoplayersthatplayed significantminutesayearago.Atthehelm thisyearisTABCall-regionselectionZay Santos. Theseniorhasbeentheenginefor theFloydadaoffenseforthepastcoupleof seasonsandZepedaexpectshertocontinue tobealeaderonthe floorthisyear.
“Sheunderstandsthegameandherwork ethicspeaksforitself.Shepushesherteammatesandtheyfollowwhatshedoes.She’s goingtogiveusachancetobeintheball gameeverynight.”
Shehasbeenaleaderonbothsidesofthe floor.Whilebeingtheleadingscorerforthe LadyWinds,shewasalsonamedDefensive MVPindistrict4-2Aayearago.Anarea Zepedasayshe’sseengrowthinisSantos’ abilitytodevelopthegirlsaroundhertobe involvedinlategamesituations.
“Everybodyisgoingtobeafactor,”hesaid. “Inthoselategamesituationsnow,it’snot alwaysgoingtobe‘let’s findZay’andgiveher theball.”
AlongsideSantos, first-teamall-district
selectionSoriahWickwareandsecondteam selectionSierraSnowdenarebacktohold downthefrontcourtfortheLadyWinds. Zepedasaidthatbothofthemhavecomea longwaysinceenteringtheprogram. “They’reworkinghardeverysingleday whetherit’sintheweightroomorinthe gym. Theyunderstandthatthingsgothrough them,”Zepedasaid.“Ifwecancontrolthe gamethroughourpostplayers,itmakes everybodyelse’sjobthatmucheasier.”
Otherall-districtreturnersincludeKaitlynn Ramirez(second-team)whowasastartera yearagoaswellasAnalisePerezandAllyson Romero(bothhonorablemention).Zepeda sharedthatbetweenPerezorRomero,one willlikely fillthe finalstartingspotandthe otherwillbethe firstoneoff thebenchandis expectedtoplaysignificantminutesaswell. jorityofitsrosterayearago.Zepedaexpects atargettobeontheirbackcomethestartof district,butbelieveshisgirlsarereadyforthe challenge. ThatispartofthereasonZepeda chosetoupthelevelofdifficultyinFloydada’s non-districtschedulewhichincludesNo.3 rankedPanhandle(2A),No.7Sundown(2A) andNo.14Idalou(3A).
“Ifeellikewe’reamorematureteam,alittle moreadvancedteamnowandwecanmaybe pickupsometoughergamesandbeinthose ballgames,”Zepedasaid.

TheAbernathyAntelopesaregoingto lookcompletelydifferentthisyearafter graduatingtheirentirestartinglineup. Withonlythreeguysontherosterthis yearwithpreviousvarsityexperience, therewillberoomtogrowthisseason, figurativelyandliterally.
TheAntelopesboastedalotofsizelast yearwithfourguysover6-foot-4onthe roster. Theywon’tbeasbigthisyear,but HeadCoachDrew Thompsonexpectshis squadtobemoreathleticallaround.
“I’mthinkingwearegoingtobeableto pushthetempo,getoutandputpressureonsometeams.Weshouldbeable toforcesometeamsintomistakesand turnthosemistakesintoeasybaskets,” Thompsonsaid.
SeniorJaxsonBeesonalongwithjuniors NoahRiglerandBrodyShaddenmake upthethreereturnersfortheAntelopes. Riglerplayedthemostoutofthethree lastseason,comingoff thebenchand providingasparkasagoodshooterfor Abernathy. ThompsonexpectsRiglerand Shaddentotakeonleadershiprolesthis year,butalsowouldliketoseeoneofthe youngerguystakeonthatroleastheyear progresses.
“I’mnotopposedtotheyoungerguys leadingbecausehalfoftheguysonthe rosterthisyeararefreshmenandsophomores,” Thompsonnoted.
Onefreshmanthat’lllikelyplayabig rolerightawayisCamMarshall. The sonofformerTexasTechballer,Mikey Marshall,Camislistedas6-foot-5on therosterandwillbeabletomakeupfor someofthesizethattheAntelopeslost fromlastyear.
“Heisverytalented,” Thompsonsaid.
“We’regoingtobeableto(use)himin goodsituationstoscore.Weexpectthe sametypesofthingsfromtheyoungguys thatwedoourlettermen.”
Theyoungguysaregoingtohaveto getadjustedtothevarsitygamequicklyastheAntelopeswillparticipatein theCaprockClassicandNewHome Tournament,apairoftournamentsthat includedmultipletoprankedopponents primarilyfromTexasandacrossthe country.For Thompson,thegoalisn’tto gooutofnon-districtplayundefeated butrathertopreparethemforhighlevel competitionastheycompeteagainsta loadeddistrictthisyearthatincludes No.9rankedChildressandNo.6ranked Shallowater.
“Theymaynotunderstandthebigpicture.Iliketoplaytoughernon-district schedulesbecausethenyou’rebattle-tested,”heshared.
Thegoalforthisyear’sAbernathysquad staysthesameasusualforAbernathy Athletics. Theywanttoreachthepostseasonandmakearun.Lastyearthe Antelopeswereabletoupsettop-seeded Bushlandintheirbi-districtgame.

TheAbernathyLadyLopeshadabizarreendtotheirseasonlastyear.After startingtheyearwinning18oftheir21 games,theAntelopesproceededto finish theyearona2-8districtslumpand missedtheplayoffs.
TheLadyLopesarelookingtoreverse thatfortuneandreachthepostseason onceagain.
Thisyear,anewmanwillbeonthesidelinesfortheLadyLopes.FormerTexas TechplayerMikeyMarshallisleading theprogram.
Marshallwasafour-yearplayerforthe RedRaidersandhascoachedonthe AAUcircuitforanumberofyearsprior totakingoverastheLadyLopeshead coach.Whileit’shis firstcoachingopportunityattheUILhighschoollevel,Marshallbelieveshiscoachingexperiencein theAAUandhisplayingexperiencewill helpguideAbernathy.
“Ifeellikeplayingatahighlevel,you getdifferentcoaching,yougetdifferent teammatesandyougetalotofdifferent experiences,”Marshallsaid. Henotedthathisexperienceasaplayer hashelpedhimbuildbondswiththe athleteshe’sbeenabletocoach.Healso sharedthathe’slearnedmorefromother coachesaroundtheWestTexasarea aboutwhatittakestobuildaprogram andhopesthathecandothesamefor thegirlsofAbernathy.
“Ithinkthebiggestthingisgetting thegirlstobuyintothemselvesandto establishadifferentculturearoundhere,” Marshallsaid.“Ifeellikeourchancesof beingcompetitivearereallyhigh.We wantthemtohaveapurposeeveryday theywalkintothegym.”
Marshallinheritedsomekeypiecesfrom lastyear’steamincludingall-district athleteAubrey Thielwholedtheteamin scoring.
“Icanseeherfollowinguplastyear withanevenbetteryearjustfrom
learningalittlebitmoreaboutthegame, notjustonthescoringend,butmaking everybodyelsearoundherbetter,”Marshallsaid.
Joining ThielthisyearisMarshall’s daughter,MecailinMarshall.Shewillbe abigadditiontotherosterasthecombo guardledthewayfor5ALubbockHigh lastyearandhelpedthemreachtheir firstplayoff berthsince2018. Theguard currentlyholdsmultipleDivisionIoffers fromuniversitieslikeDePaulandColoradoState.

“Wedohavesometeamsthataregoing tobechallengingforus,butI’mdefinitelyupforit,”Marshallsaid.“Ifeellikeit helpsusunderstandwhereweareand whereweneedtoget.Whetherit’swins orlosses,we’regoingtolearn.”

“It’sjustamatterof findingguystostepup,” Workmansaid.“I’mlookingforwardtothe year.We’vegotsomegoodreturnersand goodyoungguyswhocouldstepupand helpusplay.”
TheMustangsgraduated fiveseniors fromlastyear’steam,threeofwhichwere startersandtheteam’stopscorers. Thisisn’t somethingnewforWorkmanasforthe pastofcoupleofyearshe’sdealtwithbig seniorclasses.

AlongwithSparkman, first-teamall-districtforwardNathanUrbinawilllikely bealeaderonthe floorfortheMustangs. Urbinaisoneofthefewseniorsontherosterthisyearandwilllooktobetheanchor downlowforOlton.
“(Nathan)Urbinaisathree-yearvarsity guy.He’sado-it-allkindofguywithhis sizeandlength,soheisgoingtobeaguy thatweleanonheavily,”Workmansaid.
Workman’s2023-2024rosteriscomprised ofafewplayerswhogotjuniorvarsity minutesayearago.Hebelieveswiththose guysandthevarsityguyscomingback fromfootball,itisgoingtotakesometime to figureouttheoffense.

Flyexpectstomakehisimprintonthis programearlyastheFilliesreturnonly fourlettermanandonlyonestarterfrom lastyear’steam.Heexpectsthreeseniors –EvelynMatute,EmmaAckerand AspenStruve–tohelp fillsomeofthe rolesleft behindbythosewhograduated ayearago.
“Evelynisgoingtobeourstartingpoint guard.Sheisgoingtothatroleofleading ouroffenseandbeingthefocalpointon defense,settingthetoneonbothsidesof theball,”Flysaid.

“We’regoingtobeveryyoungandwe’re goingtohaveto figureoutwhatthe identityofourteamisgoingtobe,”De LaRosasaid.
DeLaRosaisinherfourthyearof coachingafterspendingher firstthree yearsatherhometownofDawsonasthe headbasketballcoach.Shesharedthat theLockneycommunityhasbeenvery welcomingtoherandthatoneofthe biggestchangesshe’snoticedrightaway isthenumberofkidsavailable.AtDawsonlastyear,sheonlyhadaboutsixkids availableforhervarsityteam.
Thisyear,sheinheritsateamthatgraduatedamajorityofitscorefromayear ago,buthasabigfreshmanclass.Only tworeturnersremainfromlastyear’s
team,juniorBrinleyLeFevreandsenior NadiaPerez. Throughthesummerand earlypractices,theyhavebeentheones takingonaleadershiprolefortheLady Longhorns.
“Theyaredefinitelygoingtobethebiggestpiecesofourteam.Everythingstarts andstopswiththemandthey’vebeen motivatingandleadingthefreshman groups,”DeLaRosasaid.
ShesharedthatPerezhasbeenleading onthedefensiveendwhileLeFevrehas becomeoneofthego-tooptionsonthe offensiveend. Thedynamichashelped theunderclassmen findtheirrolesonthe teamduringtheirdevelopmentoverthe summerandpreseasonpractices.
“Theycomplementeachotherverywell andtheyhaveawaytohelpmakeeveryoneelsesuccessful,”DeLaRosanoted. LeFevrewasasecond-teamall-district selectionlastyear.
DeLaRosaexpectsthisyeartobea developmentalyearfortheprogram, especiallyintheearlystagesasherteam getsusedtohercoachingstyleandthe younggroupgetsadjustedtothevarsity level.
Lockney’snon-districtscheduleisnot thatlargecomparedtootherprograms intheirdistrictsoeverygamewillmatter astheyprepare. Theywillparticipatein theWhitefaceTournamenttohelpgeta feelforsomehigh-levelcompetitionas wellasgamesagainst3Aprogramslike FrionaandLubbockRoosevelt.
“Forusthistimeisreallygoingtobe aboutgettingthatexperienceagainst teamsthataresimilartooneswewillbe facingindistrict,”DeLaRosasaid.

ItwassuggestedtoQuirogathather coachingstyleandpersonality,aswell asherrapportwiththeboys,madeher agood fitfortheposition.Sheagreedto takethepositionknowingshemightencounteruniquechallengesasoneofthe fewwomencoachinghighschoolboys basketball.SheexpectstheLonghornsbe underestimatedthisyearasaresult. Buttheyshouldn’tbe.
“Ithinkwe’regoingtobeaprettygood team,”Quirogasaid.
TheLonghornslostfewtograduationin thespring. Thisyear’sLonghornsinclude areturningleadscorer,DominicDominguez,aswellasEliHernandez,another bigplayerfromthe2022-2023season.

“Eliisjustanaturalleader,”shesaid. AccordingtoQuiroga,the2023-2024 Longhornsincludealmosteveryonewho wasonvarsitylastyear. Theyalsohave abigfreshmanclass.With18players interestedinjoining,sheanticipatesaJV teamthisyearaswell.
She’sgotplentyofoptionstoworkwith, whichisabenefitasQuirogabegins buildingherprogram.Quirogapreviouslycoachedalongsidetheteam’sprevious coachandtheircoachingstylesaresimilar,whichthe16-yearcoachingveteran believeshashelpedwiththebuy-infrom herteam.Butthey’restilllearninganew system.
“It’sjustgoingtobeamatterofhow quicklytheycanpickupthesystemthat we’regoingtotrytorunhere,”shesaid.
Forthepastfewyears,Harthas finished districtinfourthplace–anotablefeatas thedistrictincludesHappy,Nazarethand Springlake-Earth,tonameafew. “Ourgoalistogetthird,”Quirogasaid. “Ifwecansqueezeinsecond,thatwould bebetter.”
Non-districtplayincludescompetitorslikeAmherst,HedleyandHartley, tonameafewmore. They’realsosetto competeintheAntonTournamentand theWhitharralTournament. Thescheduleiscompetitivebuttherearesome winnablegamesonthere,CoachQuiroga notes.
Onebiglessonshehopestodriveis youdon’tknowwhatcanhappenonany givenday.Anybodycanhaveanoff night andanybodycanhaveagoodone.She seesherteam’spotentialandjustcan’t waittoshowoff whattheycando. “I’mexcitedtogetgoing,”Quirogasaid.

Lackofnumberswasanissueforthe Elkslastseason. Thereweremultiple gamesthroughouttheyearwherethey onlyhad fiveavailableplayers.Fitzhugh believesthathewillhaveabouteightguys ontherosterthisyear,anincreasefrom sixtheyearprior.
Withthatinmind,oneofFitzhugh’s goalsistomakesurehisguysareinbasketballshapesotheycanstayhealthyand availablethroughouttheyear.
“Itdoesn’tmatterhowmanyschemesor playsIdrawup.Itdoesn’tmatterwhatI calliftheyaren’tinbasketballshapeand abletobeinthegame.EspeciallyknowingthatImayonlyhavesevenoreight guys,”hesaid.“Afterthat,we’llbeableto getintomoreofteachingthegameand gettingthemintothesystem.”
