ell, here we are, 2020 in another decade and welcome to this special edition of the BHBN magazine.

It is a great pleasure to be Vice Chairman of this award-winning radio station. Since our last edition, BHBN has won a number of awards including the very prestigious Hospital Broadcasting Association’s Station of the Year Award. Read about our fantastic year on page 45. In 2019 we welcomed The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield, Birmingham back to our family of hospitals. Due to broadcasting and logistical issues it had not been possible to get our service to the site since early in the 2000’s, but now with the latest technology we can provide the hospital with our programmes. Read more about the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital on pages 22 and 23. We are a great team here at BHBN and the commitment is second to none. For those of you who think we just come in, sit down and play songs - well it’s not that simple. Most of our members have full time jobs so we do a radio programme around that. We research, plan and search out the music needed. Our request presenters also go around the wards to meet the patients and then come to the studio to plan on what tunes go where in the running order. Over a week a one-hour show can take anything up to five hours of their time to organise. If you have been aware of BHBN previously you may

have noticed there has been a change to our name and our logo which has been designed by Penny-Jane Bourne, a BHBN member who is a Graphic Designer by trade. Penny- Jane wanted us to have a Logo Mark we could be proud of representing who we are and what we do, her reasoning is illustrated on Page 10. I would also like to thank Penny-Jane for designing the cover of this magazine. She has done a wonderful job throughout this project. The change of name was decided upon to reflect not only our current service but our hopes and inspiration for the future, which are, not only having listeners in the hospitals we serve but patients are encouraged to take us home with them by the introduction of a phone App. Also, to expand our service to the wider health community such as Nursing Homes and Health centres as well as the local community. Coronavirus in the UK ...A Personal Experience and Reflection Of the 2020 Pandemic So Far…

his is the year that the world had big expectations for; another decade has passed, and in UK politics certain issues were moving on. It felt like we were moving forward. It’s a very different world now - bustling cities, towns & villages have stopped activity. Coronavirus has swept the globe causing a pandemic. All non-essential shops are closed, the government have given direction for everybody to stay indoors, unless for: food shopping, one form of exercise or if you are a key worker. I have been in quarantine since 1st March. I had to self-isolate after potentially contracting the virus during a visit to an Austrian ski resort in the midst of the outbreak there. At the time, the outbreak in Austria was unreported and wasn’t considered a location at risk. Like everyone else the pandemic has changed life for me in many ways including work, leisure, socialising, diet, exercise... everything. I cannot say it is all bad however, with no fast food and no commuting to work, I view this as a rare moment in time to heal, rest and reflect. Thankfully I can still work from home. I work for a community radio station. It is astonishing just how much we can do from home to stay connected and keep working. With many radio stations up and down the country broadcasting from their home studios, which can consist of a microphone, a DJ’ing mixer, a laptop and earphones, along with software that is easy to access online. Content for my shows has changed too. Whilst I am maintaining my usual chatty and cheery self on air it has become very

8

important to reiterate government guidelines, reminding the community of this advice during the pandemic. We have recently seen the front pages covered with photos of full parks, as well as reports of house parties up and down the country, which makes my job as a local presenter even more important to help re-enforce those guidelines. Whilst content pre COVID19 was generally a mix of local, national and fun-loving stories, it now seems there is a flood of information to be shared surrounding local community activity. There are even more local people and businesses in need, and more who are volunteering or sharing initiatives. Yes, lockdown is a difficult time, but something very positive is happening in the community we are pulling together stronger than ever before. It is an honour as a presenter to be able to share such stories and help those in need by promoting their message. If the support from the community was not obvious in the normal light of day, it is certainly shining through in this darkness. This is without a doubt a moment for the history books. One that will change the shape of the future as we know it. Sadly, there will be many who won’t know what the future looks like because the virus will have gripped them, but for others uncertainty awaits. I would like to take this opportunity to once again say #THANKYOUNHS and to other critical workers in supermarkets and pharmacies. Putting your life on the line to help others is selfless and should be commended.

Secondly, the infinity heart is made up of two sides which overlap, much like a Venn diagram and represents the two key areas where we provide our service – hospital/ patients and the wider community. The centre of the logo puts us at the very heart of it, bringing the areas together. In addition, through the ‘heart’ visual, we are giving a nod both to the care we as volunteers put into the service we provide, as well as the station’s heritage as a Hospital Radio, something we are proud of.

BHBN GOLD... 30 YEARS & COUNTING Tune in to my show, BHBN Gold, Saturday’s from 9am

B

Colin :)

HBN Gold has been running now for thirty years having begun in July 1990.

After all these years I still get a buzz when putting it together, choosing a TV Theme, a Top 5. Also, the feature where I highlight news items and play the hits from a particular year, The Hits and Headlines is also fascinating to compile. The weekly show takes me about six hours during the week to prepare. I live for Saturday Mornings to play the best songs from the 1950s, 60s, 70s & 80s. When I began presenting the programme back in nineteen nineties, the show aired on Sunday’s at Midday and of course I only had the three decades of hits to choose from that were considered ‘Gold’ and the eighties were added in the early 2000’s which prompted the tagline...

“..and the eighties as well!” to be added to the jingles. In 2010 the show was moved to its current slot on Saturdays at 9am. The show is compiled from the extensive tracks BHBN has on its playout system, but I also use a wide selection of CD’s and vinyl. We pride ourselves at BHBN Radio that we use all these formats from our extensive libraries. Although I do pester the technical staff to upload the odd little treasure I have come across to our system. I am amazed at how many people do tune in to BHBN Gold each week around the wards and online to enjoy the same music as I do.

Providing care and support during these challenging times At Acute Recruitment Consultants Ltd, the safety and wellbeing of our clients and employees is always our top priority. With the coronavirus pandemic we understand how concerning this time is, particulary for those who may be more vulnerable to infection. As key workers, we can and will continue to serve the most vulnerable in our communities so they remain living safely in their own home. We provide Nursing and Care in a variety of settings including complex needs, such as brain/rehabilitation, mental health, supported living and learning and disabilities. We have experienced an increased demand for people to have a dedicated live-in carer who stays with their client, providing them with companionship, care medication and household support. We are also providing carers for people who do not want a live-in carer but in the current climate wish to book a dedicated carer for long hours during the day. As they have key worker status, our carers are able to access a dedicated shopping hour and if our clients are able to go out,

LOCKDOWN

Hospital Radio Broadcasting throughout

Northfield Birmingham, where I would either render the sound suitable for broadcast or build programmes from the sound files that were submitted.

H

ospital Radio Stations across the country were having to find new ways of keeping lonely patients entertained during the Covid-19 Pandemic when their studios in hospitals were inaccessible. Some presenters were broadcasting live programmes from home, in lofts, sheds, bedrooms and front rooms.

I then sent those to our Queen Elizabeth Hospital Studios, again via the internet, loading them, using the Teamviewer interface, into our studio computers to be broadcast at varying times and days of the week. Strange times‌Just planning for the new normal now!!

David Horton

Vice Chairman / Technical Controller.

However, here at BHBN Radio our presenters could not do that because the way our service leaves the BHBN studio in varying ways to serve the many hospitals in and around Birmingham and the World Wide Web. Some of the BHBN presenters had the wherewithal to record either full programmes or voice tracks with features and requests from their lofts, bedrooms, etc..etc.. (see pics) that were sent via the internet to me in a secret loft location in 14

f you love visiting the theatre, the movies, watching TV or all of the above, this is the BHBN show for you!

ello, my name is Miranda Burns and I’m a radio presenter on Capital FM. But, I haven’t always been though... I am a BHBN alumni and so proud of that fact. BHBN is such a special station, and the people who work on it create radio with love and selflessness.

There’s nothing more lovely than knowing you improved someone’s day by nattering to them through their speakers. I feel very grateful to have been a part of the BHBN family for 2 and a half years, and the station will always hold a special place in my heart. JOINTCARE GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It brings together an experienced and highly skilled team. The goal with JointCare is to provide seamless, efficient care and have patients healthy and doing the things they enjoy as quickly as possible. The ROH have designed this specific and tailored service to care for knee and hip replacement patients. There are no hospital gowns and long hours in bed; Jointcare is about wellness and recovery.

J

ointCare, a modern and innovative hip and knee replacement service for NHS patients, was developed at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and, based on the latest evidence and care from around the world, it is setting new standards for NHS hip and knee replacement surgery in England. At the heart of the JointCare programme is patient education which helps people prepare for their procedure and rehabilitation.

Patients receive incredible care and recover in an environment which encourages you to move and improve. They receive information before and after their procedure so that they are empowered to help themselves. They also take part in group physiotherapy sessions and their family and friends have a role in supporting them during their stay.

Patients work. with physiotherapists just hours after their surgery as the evidence suggests this aids recovery. The service is helping many hip and knee replacement patients to get home just 24 – 48 hours after their operation.

The ROH is the only hospital in the UK where JointCare is available. Patient feedback for JointCare has been excellent and the service has been bolstered by recent events organised by the Trust where patients and their families were invited to catch up and share their experiences. In addition to positive feedback from patients, JointCare has now been recognised by the Forward Healthcare Awards, who awarded the programme the Acute or Specialist Services Redesign award earlier this year. The win came just weeks after the hospital was nominated for Acute or Specialist Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 2019, the most coveted accolade in UK healthcare.

Mr Andrew Pearson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who helped to introduce the JointCare programme, said: “We saw an opportunity to take all of the good things we already do at the Royal Orthopaedic and make them even better. Patients can expect high quality clinical care in a dynamic environment focussed on movement and recovery. The JointCare hip and knee replacement pathway is an excellent choice for patients who want to reduce pain and restore independence.” You can get more information on JointCare by visiting our website at: www.roh.nhs.uk/our-services/joint-care

JointCare Project Manager Alicia Stanton says: “The JointCare team is thrilled with the positive feedback the programme continues to receive. Improving the quality of care for orthopaedic patients drives everything we do, and to be recognised in this way is a real boost for the whole team. We hope to build on the fantastic work JointCare has already achieved and continue to improve outcomes for our patients.”

PEACE OF MIND FOR YOUR LOVED ONES, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS AROUND THE CORNER... It is a common misconception that setting up Lasting Power of Attorneys are only for older people, however anyone can lose capacity at anytime, through illness or if injured in an accident. What is important to note is that you can only set up an LPA when you have mental capacity. Once you’ve lost capacity, it’s too late! So, what is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? An LPA is a legal document in which you can appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf as your attorney if there comes a time when you cannot make decisions for yourself in connection with your property, financial affairs, health & welfare matters. What happens if you don’t have an LPA? Without a formal LPA your relatives or those you trust cannot manage your affairs even if it is to help you. If you do not have an LPA and you lose the ability to manage your own affairs then your assets will be frozen until a Court order can be obtained.

It is therefore best to plan ahead and set up an LPA while you are still in good mental health, removing any future burden from your family. At Perfect Wills and Estate Plans LLP we will take the time to guide you through the process from start to finish from initial consultation right through to storing the registered documents. We are a small local business, based in Sutton Coldfield and offer a very personal service to our clients being an affordable option rather than using a traditional solicitor. We also believe in supporting our local community, that’s why we will be making a £50 donation to the UHB Hospitals Birmingham Charity* for every Lasting Power of Attorney completed. So, if you have been considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney and would also like to help the UHB Hospitals Birmingham Charity, call Perfect Wills on 0800 531 6283 quoting UHB Hospitals Charity.

*Terms & Conditions apply - *£50 donation to UHB Hospitals Charity for every LPA completed by Perfect Wills and on payment of fees in full. Offer cannot be used in conjuction with any other offer. Promotion Valid until 31st December 2020.

PRESENTER PROFILES Catch Adelle on BHBN Radio Tuesdays @ 7pm

Adelle x Hello, I’m Adelle Davies. I started volunteering at BHBN in February 2019 Age: 20... Soon to be 21. Occupation: Currently I am working at a hotel. How did you find out about BHBN? I did a google search for local hospital radio stations and BHBN came up, so I emailed my interest and then a year later I got an email asking if I was still interested. Tell us about your show… I do the Royal Orthopaedic Request Show. On a Tuesday I spend time around the wards asking patients for song requests and then broadcast my show on the evening, so make sure to keep an eye out for me! What would your three ‘Desert Island’ discs be and why? Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper, Man! I Feel Like A Woman – Shania Twain & I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Houston. They are just proper girl power anthems and it’s impossible to not dance when those songs come on.

What’s your daily routine? A recent New Year routine I have started is waking up at 5am, having a coffee and banana while watching the news, I write in my journal and then either go to work or if I am not working, I walk to the gym for a morning workout. What’s your burning ambition? I would love to become a Radio and TV Presenter, that is my main ambition in life! What’s the best thing about being part of BHBN? All the lovely people that make BHBN what it is and getting the chance to go around the wards chatting to staff and the patients.

10 Top Tips for Hospital Discharge 1), Ask the staff caring for you on the ward when you’re likely to be getting home. They should be able to give you an expected date of discharge. 2), When you have a discharge date, arrange for a relative or friend to collect you or let the staff know if they need to make other transport arrangements for you. 3), Make sure you have keys to get in! 4), Don’t forget to ask for any medical certificates you may need whilst on the ward. 5), Some hospitals have a Discharge Lounge where you can wait before you’re collected. This is a comfortable, safe and relaxing environment with magazines and refreshments.

7), Your Discharge Letter will be given to you with your medications when they are ready – the Discharge Lounge can speed this process. 8), It may be helpful to ask a friend or relative to stay with you or visit regularly. 9), If this is not possible, make sure you have plenty of food, drink and other essentials at home. 10), If you have any queries, ask the nurse in charge of the ward/department. From day one my mom experienced such great care. The carers have been amazing and treated her with respect and dignity at all times and became part of our family. The home offers a variety of activities and encourage residents and family to join in. The standard of food was excellent and they catered for my mom’s limited dietary requirements. I could not have asked for anything better and I am very sad that I have had to move Mom on to nursing care. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending St Joseph’s Residential Care Home. Andrea W (Daughter of Resident 18th February 2020 My father was extremely well cared for by all members of staff, whilst in St Joseph’s between April 18 and May 19. work in this one. When I saw Blondie in concert this was the song that got everyone going.

Joe :)

LA Woman - The Doors. Well another long song from me! Just listen to this one and it takes you on a real journey. On a personal note this is a song that my dad covers in his band and every year we head off to the Upton Blues Festival where he plays. This song is the special moment in the set when everything connects together between band and audience. One of my favourite moments in the year every year.

Occupation: Theatre Assistant and Van Driver.

What’s the best thing about BHBN? Great culture, everyone is so friendly and willing to help.

Hello, I’m Joe Kennard. I am the Solihull Hospital Request Presenter Age: 26

How did I hear about BHBN? I wanted to get involved in radio and found BHBN through a google search. Tell us about your show... Every week I visit Solihull Hospital and get some song requests from patients and staff at the hospital, usually 10 or so. I love this part of the week and I’ve met some real characters. I then head off to the BHBN studios at the QE, put together the show, decide on a running order and then present the show live on air across the hospital trust. What would your 3 desert island discs be? Baba O’Riley - The Who. I just love this song, the first time I ever heard it I was amazed by every section. That opening is just pure magic. Atomic- Blondie - This one is an epic, easy to sing along to and I love the guitar and bass

Your best moment at BHBN? The second song on my first show. I was so nervous having to do my opening speech and introduce the first song request but very relived that it had gone to plan and I was now in control. And finally, your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? I think the best is yet to come on that one!

#YouAreNotAlone

niversity Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country, employing over 20,000 staff and treating over 2.8 million people per year. UHB has more than 2,700 beds across all our sites with the main hospital services being based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and other services based at Birmingham Chest Clinic and Solihull community health premises. Domestic abuse (DA) is so prevalent in our society it will affect a significant number of our patients and staff across the full disciplines and they in turn will be in contact with many adults and children who are affected. It will touch each and everyone one of us in some shape or form and affects every aspect of their life including their performance and attendance in work. As well as supporting our patients we are creating a whole system approach so that staff experiencing domestic abuse get the support that they need in a safe place where they will be believed, not judged, not treated with stigma or shame and managed accordingly. We want to make every contact count to ensure that the right information is provided safely in the right format at the right time. This will help to ensure that people feel safe, supported and appropriate choices can be

made.Responding to disclosures of domestic abuse can be complex and challenging though and needs to be managed well and safely. The Trust is working with Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid and other agencies to develop a service to support staff including employing independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVAs) to work with us in our hospitals. We aim to create safe/neutral spaces in our hospitals where our staff and patients can seek assistance from external professional bodies. We plan to use our premises to host DA organisations so people can use their hospital visit or appointment (whether real or not) as an opportunity to seek advice. This provides free premises to social sector colleagues and embeds the host organisation in the minds of the community as a safe place to go. Through the Trusts commitment of building healthier lives and in-line with our staff’s wellbeing strategy we are committed to bringing this silent epidemic out of the shadows and aim to begin to deliver on this vast and important agenda.

Kira x

Hello, I’m Kira Hughes. I present Kids Time with Kira on BHBN for the Childrens Wards. Age: 25 Occupation: Student/ Wetherspoons/ associate.

Tell us about your show… My show is produced for the Children’s wards around Birmingham Hospitals. Kids Time with Kira includes the latest charts, pop hits, Disney and film singalongs as well as a ‘Toddler Time’. I aim to brighten up their days with all their favourite music and getting listeners involved by taking their requests and dedications, so their favourites are played.

Queen, with the best feel good music to sing and dance along too. From early music in the 60’s with Sonny to her classics like ‘Believe’. What’s the best thing about being part of BHBN? Being surrounded with people that have the same passion, love and excitement for music just as much as I do. Which celebrity inspires you and why? Bon Jovi inspires me the most, I grew up listening to their music and found deeper meanings in their lyrics. They inspire so much I got the lyrics “Stick to your guns” and “Aim from the heart” tattooed from the song Stick to your guns off the New Jersey album as I found meaning in these lyrics; to stand up for myself and what I believe in as well as to always to do the things I love. Your best moment at BHBN and your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? Definitely being nominated for HBA’s Best Newcomer Award. My most embarrassing moment would have to be the first mistake I made… when I introduced ‘Rock around the clock’ as ‘Rock around the Christmas tree’… in February!

What would your three ‘Desert Island’ discs be and why? - Bon Jovi – ‘New Jersey’! Bon Jovi is the music influence I grew up listening to which gave me the love music and lyrics. Introducing me to many other rock bands in all genres, but 80’s rock always being my favourite. - Kip Moore – ‘Wild Ones’ I find this album is a great, with a mix of both soft and upbeat country, that you can zone out and chill to or dance about and sing to. - Cher – Greatest hits – For me Cher is Pop

Mary’s Column Mary, 93 in July, is quite possibly BHBN’s oldest and biggest fan.

I

’m Mary and I think I might be BHBN’s oldest fan. I’ll be 93 in July (2020) and I have listened to BHBN everyday since I found out about the station nearly 7 years ago by Donna Joseph the presenter of Good Vibrations, Donna is my neighbour in Great Barr, Birmingham. Donna had not long started her request programme, and BHBN had just started airing online, so I was very lucky to be able to listen from home. I’ve lived in the same house in Great Barr since I was 3 years old and have been house bound now for 13 years. It wouldn’t be the same without BHBN. I know most of the Presenters and get mentioned quite alot, and l always let them know I’ve been listening and how much I enjoy their shows. I think it’s wonderful that they all work as volunteers and give so much of their time, especially Dave Horton the Vice Chairman/ tech man/ web designer, he does so much and is such a lovely man. It’s no surprise he won the HBA’S John Witney Award 2 years ago, well deserved I’d say. Until I was bed bound 6 months ago, I used to help produce the light lunch programme by listening to ensure there were no repeats throughout the week.

This was great for me because the light lunch programme plays my favourite big band music. I would gladly listen with my pen and pad in hand and report any repeats back to Dave at the end of the week. I’m hoping I’ll be able to still help BHBN in some way or another soon because I would like to give back to them as much as they give to me. I also have my own feature on Donna’s Good Vibrations on a Monday called Mary Favourites, where Donna calls me up and we have a chat before playing my favourite songs for that week. I have lots of favourites over all decades, it’s not just the oldies I like. I listen to BHBN on my ipad which I was eventually persuaded to buy with my cousins money he left me after he died. Whilst I wasn’t sure at first I can say now that it was the best decision. I can’t imagine my life now without it, being able to have real time access with my family in New Zealand, catch up on my favourite TV programmes and of course listen to BHBN.

BHBN Radio looks to the future after historic win! By,

Philippa Clarkin

You might have noticed we’ve changed our name slightly too to BHBN Radio, losing the word ‘hospital’ from our title.

It was the first time in around 30 years that we had lifted the trophy and it came as a huge pat on the back for our team of dedicated volunteers.

To help with this, we’re building a BHBN Radio app for smart phones and we’re buying internet radios for nursing and care homes so they can access our service more easily.

You may not realise it but BHBN has been entertaining the patients in and around Birmingham for the past 68 years, almost as long as the NHS has been in existence!

As well as our success nationally, the tireless work of our volunteers has also been recognised a little closer to home too.

Hospital radio has been proven to provide much needed comfort and companionship to patients and, as local MP Steve McCabe said on a recent visit to our studios...

We won the bronze award at this year’s Building Healthier Lives Awards, run by the UHB NHS Trust, in the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year category.

“there’s a kind of natural “there’s a kind of natural community that community that maybe doesn’t maybe doesn’t exist elsewhere”. exist elsewhere”.

And to continue on our winning streak, we are proud to announce we won the following awards at the HBA National Hospital Radio Awards, 2020.

And the Station of the Year 2019 is...BHBN!”

We couldn’t believe it when we heard those words at last year’s Hospital Broadcasting Association awards where stations from across the country had come to honour the very best in hospital radio.

So boosted by our recent success, and a very generous bequest from a former patient and listener, we are working to secure BHBN’s future for the decades to come. We’re in the process of upgrading our studios, based at the QE, and updating some of our broadcasting equipment.

We’ll still be bringing the very best in musical medicine online and to the seven hospitals we serve but we’ll also be encouraging patients to take us home with them after they’ve been discharged as well as working to increase our listenership.

BHBN Sport brings you every moment of passion, controversy and sporting drama, as we follow Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion across the football season, with live commentary of every home game. We are also proud to deliver commentary for sight-impaired supporters at St Andrew’s. Our top team of commentators and pundits will keep you going on a Saturday afternoon with your fix of fixtures and the very best sporting analysis, action and reaction, as the biggest games unfurl before our eyes and your ears. Alongside live updates from Villa Park, St Andrews and The Hawthorns we provide regular reports from the cricket team Birmingham Bears playing T20 at Edgbaston, plus we bring you the latest on our neighbouring top-flight rugby side Worcester Warriors.

We pride ourselves on going out and about to the biggest sporting events in Birmingham. We were there when the international athletics circus came to the Alexander Stadium – including British stars such as Dina Asher-Smith and Greg Rutherford, plus four sub-10 second men’s 100m runners. We were there at the Edgbaston Priory international tennis tournament in the runup to Wimbledon. And we were also there when the British Transplant Games came to town in August 2018. This four-day sporting extravaganza saw hundreds of athletes that had received, or donated organs descend on Birmingham. We were there with kick by kick commentary for the 2020 EFL Cup Final when Aston Villa came up against the Premiership Champions Manchester City. Through thick and thin we follow our local teams - from the lows of relegation too the highs of trips to Wembley Stadium you can be rest assured the volunteers we have in the sport team will keep you abreast of everything going on. Like what you hear? Then get involved! Join the conversation on Twitter @BHBNSport, or join the team at sport@bhbn.net

If we can bring you the latest from your team on a Saturday, we will – call the studio on 0121 471 4774 and we’ll keep you covered!
