A

S THE FESTIVE SEASON approaches, Rainbow Beach is gearing up for its much-anticipated annual event, ‘Santa Comes to Rainbow’, now in its remarkable 5th year. The Community Centre, the heart of our vibrant town, will once again be the hub of joy and festivity. The event, organised by the CIRS Association, is a clear example of what can be achieved when a community comes together. This year, we have received a grant from the Gympie Regional Council, which has generously recognised the value of this event in bringing our community together. A special thank you goes to the Boomerang Bags Association. Our local ladies have been tirelessly sewing since August to create 150 handcrafted bags from recycled fabric. These bags, filled with gifts sourced from local donations, are also a symbol of our community’s dedication to sustainability and support. On Saturday 9 December, we invite everyone to the Centre Block from 3pm to witness Santa’s

grand arrival. And what a spectacle it will be! Thanks to Rainbow Beach Helicopters, Santa’s entrance it’s always a magical moment that gives goosebumps to kids of all ages. Setting the rhythm for the afternoon will be The RocknRollaBillys, a trio band known for their infectious energy and foot-tapping music. They’ll ensure everyone – from toddlers to grandparents – is up and dancing. This event is definitely a reminder of the unique charm of Rainbow Beach. It’s a time when locals come together to share in the joy before the tourist season begins. So, dress up, let your hair down, and dance into the holiday season with your neighbours and friends. As we come together to celebrate, let’s also remember to stay safe and look out for one another. Here’s to a wonderful Christmas time, filled with laughter, music, and community spirit. Happy holidays, Rainbow Beach – let’s make this 5th edition of ‘Santa Comes to Rainbow’ the best one yet!

Rainbow Beach’s natural splendor captured in children’s book

O

UR COASTAL TOWN of Rainbow Beach is buzzing with excitement over the launch of its very first children’s illustrated book, A Rainbow Story with Sofia and Matisse. This vibrant book unfolds as a celebration, showcasing our town’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Created by talented local duo, Elisa Seul and Alessia Castiglioni – both originally from Italy but now calling Rainbow Beach their home – the book is a heartwarming tribute to this special place. Drawing inspiration from the town’s stunning landscapes and diverse history, Elisa and Alessia have woven a narrative that captures the essence of Rainbow Beach in a way that has never been done before. In a remarkable collaboration, the project also features the insights of Aunty Karen Hall,

a respected Butchulla Elder. Her contribution ensures the book is not just a delightful read but also an educational tool that respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land. Through the adventure of Sofia and Matisse, young readers will embark on a journey that explores the town’s vivid colours, its history, and the spirited community that makes it unique. A Rainbow Story with Sofia and Matisse is a visual feast, showcasing the extraordinary natural features of Rainbow Beach, from the famed coloured sands to the serene coastal views. Both locals and visitors alike will find a piece of Queensland within its pages. It’s more than just a children’s book; it’s a journey through the heart of our community, acknowledging our past and

celebrating our present. And now, it’s ready to be shared with the world. Get your copy of A Rainbow Story with Sofia and Matisse today at www.arainbowstory.com and immerse yourself in the wonders of Rainbow Beach as seen through the eyes of two curious children and their enriching experiences.

N OTHER EXCITING children’s book news, beloved author and illustrator Dr Suzie Starfish (aka brilliant marine scientist and Rainbow Beach superfan Dr Sue Pillans) has written a third instalment of her series of ocean stories for kids. Roger the Wrasse and the Itchy Fishes will be released on 31 January 2024, published by Little Pink Dog Books.

“I am SO EXCITED to add to my series of ocean science stories for children with Roger the Wrasse and the Itchy Fishes. “This story draws attention to the importance of biodiversity on the reef and illustrates the special roles and relationships animals have under the sea, on reef cleaning stations. UMMER IS HERE so that must mean it is time for the Festival of Small Halls Summer Tour! Have you got your tickets yet? You better hurry! Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours that takes the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists performing at two of Australia’s largest festivals, and sends them on the road to tiny halls in communities all over Australia. And our lovely local hall is lucky enough to be one of them! Details: Sunday 17 December 2023 Doors open 6.30pm, show starts 7pm. Tickets: Full Admission - $20, Youth (13-16, must be accompanied by an adult) - $5, Child (12 and under, must be accompanied by an adult) - Free Go to festivalofsmallhalls.com for tickets, or you can purchase directly from the CIRS office.

Performers: Assynt – An award winning instrumental folk trio inspired by the great piping, fiddle, and Gaelic traditions of the Highlands of Scotland. Assynt’s self penned melodies are “refreshingly contemporary” (Folk Radio UK) while remaining true to the music traditions they are rooted in. Jackie Marshall – Calling herself a heartcentred anarchist, Jackie is heavily influenced by the Western folk and country music of the 1960s and 70s, and later, jazz and improvised music afforded her a unique personal and personable style. Her performances brim with all the energy, warmth, presence, and experience of a complicated life distilled into song. Opening will be local act Sheryl Anderson! Sheryl’s first published poem, in an anthology of young Australian writers, was about Rainbow

Beach. She fell in love with Rainbow as a child and is now fulfilling her dream of living here full time, making connections with the people, communities, and coffee. A writer for many years, Sheryl works with people to tell their own stories, then facilitate those stories into a way of sharing with others – through storytelling, theatre productions, published or unique handmade books. Her experience in drama and writing with the community usually culminates in a finished script, then production, often with people with little or no previous experience of drama or performance. Through Retelling Tales, she listens to and records people’s stories, returning them, to be kept and treasured for their families and future generations. Catch Sheryl and more on 17 December!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and we hope that Santa brings some swell!

URING THE annual BioBlitz Cooloola Coastcare members noticed weeds encroaching into the National Park. Since then, Cooloola Coastcare has been looking to assist QPWS where possible to remove these invaders. In collaboration with Sam and Erin from QPWS, we identified the Carlo Sand Blow carpark and pathway as a good starting point. On the first day of the new Rainbow Regen project, we had five enthusiastic weeders step-up to reduce the corky passionflower population. The group enjoyed some friendly banter while successfully filling a bulk-a-bag with the target weed and several other invasive plant species. But don’t worry, you haven’t missed out on all the fun. We have only scratched the surface, so will be back on-site again starting at 7am on the 12th of December. Please let us know if you are coming so we can ensure there is enough equipment on hand. Federal MP Llew O’Brien Visit M

EMBER FOR WIDE BAY Llew O’Brien dropped in to our CIRS office on Wednesday 8 November for a morning tea to say thank you. He thanked our volunteers for contributing so much to our community and we thanked him for his support in getting our Australian Government Volunteer Grant. CIRS Emergency Relief volunteer Ze discussed options to resolve homelessness and improve communications between different levels of government services. Other volunteer groups to attend were Elisa Seul and Andrea Janek from Rainbow Beach Blokes, and Tony Stewart who is publishing an unofficial history of Rainbow Beach.

More Grant Success

C

IRS RECEIVED much-appreciated funds in two successful grants from Gympie Regional Council’s Community grants program in November. First, we received $2,993 for the Volunteer Comfort Zone project application to purchase new office chairs, computer monitors, lockers for volunteers’ personal effects, and a volunteer management app. These items will make office work so much easier for our brilliant volunteers. Second, we received $1,500 towards our annual family Christmas celebration – Santa Comes to Rainbow. The funds will help to offset

the costs associated with this free public event, including the live music, giveaways, and promotional costs. We appreciate Council’s support for this event which is primarily designed for local families with children but also provides social inclusion for all people whose families might be absent at this time of the year. Visitors most welcome too. And Santa arrives in a helicopter – what could be cooler than that? Our heartfelt thanks to Gympie Regional Council and ratepayers for these grants. See Elisa’s article in this paper for more details on Santa Comes to Rainbow.

Free Movies O

UR COOLAFLIX FREE FILM night project continues this month with Rainbow Beach Boardriders as the host group. They have chosen another iconic surf film – The Endless Summer. This is the remastered version of the 1966 cult classic, featuring the world’s best surfers (back then) travelling the globe looking for the perfect wave. Doors open at 6pm on Saturday 9 December, film screens at 6.15pm. This will be after the monthly

markets in the morning and directly following Santa Comes To Rainbow in the afternoon. It’s going to be a big day of free fun activities with plenty of food and drinks sold throughout the day before the film so stock up and bring it with you. Rainbow Beach Learning Community hosted last month’s family friendly movie Oddball, and Keep Cooloola Cool will be the January host group. See next month’s paper for more details.

Rainbow Beach School P&C News Melissa Spanton SECRETARY

T

HE YEAR IS coming to an end very quickly with the end of Term 4 less than two weeks away at time of printing. It has been an incredible year and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the students on the efforts they have put in all year. We have seen the students grow both academically and as individuals. We are very fortunate to be part of a school with such wonderful students and families. It is also the time for us to acknowledge and thank the teachers and staff for all of their dedication to the students and the endless hours that go into putting together an interesting and fun delivery of curriculum along with camps, school events, and excursions. Our annual Christmas Raffle is well underway with many students requesting more books of tickets to sell. We are yet again overwhelmed by the support of the students, their families and the community for supporting the P&C with donations and purchasing tickets. There are still some tickets available and as they say, you have to be in it to win it! Tickets are available for sale from our students or from the office at the school. There are over $5,000 worth of prizes which include 3 major prizes, along

with many other prize packs. The tickets will be drawn and winners announced at the Rainbow Beach School Christmas Concert. The Rainbow Beach School Christmas Concert will be held at The Rainbow Beach Community Centre on Monday 4 December at 5:00pm. The Christmas Concert is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the year and recognise some of the great individual student achievements from each grade. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate the creative talents of the students with class and choir performances. The concert is open for all to attend and we would love to see you there! We continue to be spoilt each and every week with delicious food prepared by Tina Yu in our tuckshop. Thank you very much Tina, the students are all very happy with the food and their families are very grateful for having a day off from making school lunches each week! Finally we would like to wish all of our families, teachers and staff a very happy Christmas and New Year. Whether you are near or far for this festive season we hope you have a safe and amazing holiday and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2024! We would also like to farewell the departing Year 6 students and wish them all the best for High School. We look forward to hearing how you all settle in to your new schools.

A Message from the Principal, Mr Steve Bennett Barambah Camp Year 3/4 recently ventured out of the classroom and made their way to Barambah Camp. The camp to Barambah certainly lived up to our expectations. Our students had an amazing time walking, talking, and connecting. This camp required them to work together and challenge themselves and saw them grow both individually and as a team. Our students were a credit to themselves, their families, our school, and wider community. A regular comment made by all the staff out there at Barambah was compliments towards the students’ manners, respect, and genuine care for each other. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Barambah and experienced low ropes, catapult making, mapping, geocaching, bushwalking, and much more. We even managed to see quite a bit of wildlife!

If you would like to keep up to date with our P&C news, you can visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ PandCRainbowBeach.

School Swimming Carnival On Thursday 16 November, we hosted our 2023 Swimming Carnival between K’Gari and Cooloola Sporting houses. We have been very impressed by the level of engagement in our swimming program this year. The students have made some great progress with their swimming abilities and the competition was very tight. Participation by all was outstanding and with only 2 points separating the teams; Cooloola were the winners for 2023! We are very grateful to Ms Kylie Summers, our PE teacher, supported by BJ Parton and the team of volunteers that have assisted with this year’s program. I would also like to thank the Rainbow Beach Sports Club for their ongoing support allowing us free access and the use of the Sports Club bus for transport. We are so fortunate to the community support afforded to our school!

HE COOLABAY CHOIR will be going into recess from mid-December until the end of January but some of you may catch us singing at the Cooloola Cove Carol service on Saturday 9 December at the Veterans’ and Community Hall. Regular choir practice will resume in the New Year – why not put SINGING on your New Year’s Resolutions List and treat yourself?

W

E CONTINUED to celebrate Probus Month/Seniors Month with a Dolphin Ferry cruise around Tin Can Bay, followed by lunch at the Country Club. Both these events were funded by grants from COTA (Council on the Ageing) and Gympie Regional Council, for which we are grateful. Our cruise around the Bay took place on Saturday 21 October, and the weather was absolutely perfect – sunny with a slight breeze. Ian and Heide, the couple who operate the cruises, took our group of 30 members and guests to Carlo Point in search of dolphins, around the Bay, and then up Snapper Creek to view all the fabulous houses and boats. Although we did not sight any dolphins we did spot a turtle. While Ian took the wheel, Heide mingled with our group. They took great care of us, especially when embarking and disembarking. One of our guests had an assistant dog and he enjoyed the cruise also! Upon our return we headed to the Country Club for a delicious lunch, and the opportunity to have a further chat with our cruising friends. It was a great day, full of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship – the Probus motto. Seven members attended the

Melbourne Cup Lunch at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club, where we were treated to great entertainment, great service, and great food. We were treated to champagne or orange juice and whilst sipping our drinks enjoyed the fun entertainment followed by the best dressed competitions. Our members, Don and Judy, who were married recently at the Club, took the opportunity to thank Bowls Club members for their wonderful service on that day. Following the Calcutta the great race was on and every one of our group won at least one prize in the sweepstakes – a thrill for our once-a-year punters! Guest speaker at our November meeting was Tina Mahaffey from the Tin Can Bay Post Office, who presented a very interesting history of letter and parcel delivery services in Australia. It is truly amazing the changes which have taken place over the years, with modern technology aiding the myriad of services now available from Australia Post. We are looking forward to our Christmas Lunch at the RSL Club on 6 December with lots of fun and good cheer to wind up the year’s activities. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the

Hot tips to stay cool this Summer Cheryl Zunic TREASURER

S WE ALL ARE aware, the weather bureau has been warning of a very hot summer ahead. The Local Ambulance Committee is keen to ensure that members of our community keep as safe as possible throughout the year – especially during periods of hot weather. The committee has therefore arranged for the distribution of Heat Stress Flyers to some outlets in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach as well as both libraries. The flyers are free and offer some very helpful hints on how to prevent heat-related illness for seniors, babies, and children in particular. Practical measures such as drinking small amounts of water every 15-20 minutes, wearing lightweight clothing, and avoiding strenuous activity are some of the suggestions

for avoiding heat stress. There is also advice on the early signs of heat stress such as loss of appetite, dizziness, nausea, and loss of concentration. If the condition progresses to heat stroke where there is high body temperature and no sweat or fast and shallow breathing among other signs, it is a medical emergency and you need to call triple zero (000). So please take the time to pick up a Heat Stress Flyer and stay safe this summer. The committee would like to thank the Tin Can Bay Craft Club for their very generous donation of $372 following their stall at our recent Flower Show. We also extend our thanks to all those in the community who have supported us during the year and we wish everyone a Joyful Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Research has shown that singing may help lower stress, boost immunity and lung function, enhance memory, improve mental health, and help you cope better with pain. Singing in a choir enhances general wellbeing and social connectedness!

We are a community choir, open to all, and we welcome new members. Our repertoire covers a broad range of songs and genres – some old, some new, world music, rounds, singalongs and three-part harmonies. And it’s lots of fun! The Coolabay Choir meets for an hour at 3pm every Wednesday at the Veterans’ and Community Hall in Cooloola Cove.

Tin Can Bay RSL secures grant for veranda enclosure

A Year of Highs and Lows Carole Lehmann

T

Sunday BBQ chefs, Kev and Scott, are looking forward to the enclosure of Tin Can Bay RSL’s eastern veranda. Ross Carruthers

T

HE BOARD OF THE Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Group is pleased to advise that it has been successful in securing a grant of $25,630 through the Queensland Government’s Community Gambling Benefit Fund to enclose the eastern veranda adjacent to the bar area. It is anticipated the works will be completed early next year before the weather starts to cool. This will ensure members and visitors are warm and dry when we are set upon by those regular Tin Can Bay coastal showers.

President Don Holland put a lot of work into the grant submission and is very pleased with the positive outcome. As Don said, “It is very difficult for small ‘Not for Profit’ businesses like our Sub Branch to come up with the funds needed for these types of capital projects. “This grant will help bring our infrastructure up to the standard required and I’m sure it will be appreciated by members and visitors alike.” Well, we all love your work, Don! Thank you for your service.

HOUGH TIN CAN BAY Community & Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS) have already celebrated Christmas this year (in July) we’re doing it again!! Partly because it’s a lot of fun and partly because it’s the REAL time of year to be doing it!! So, we’re starting with a BBQ on Saturday 9 December at the Christmas Carols at the Veteran’s Hall in Cooloola Cove – a lovely venue for families and friends to enjoy some Christmas harmonies, good cheer, and good food. Then we’ll be celebrating again with our last general meeting for the year on Wednesday 13 December followed by a wonderful Christmas smorgasbord lunch for members to enjoy. We’ll be closed from Saturday 23 December to Sunday 7 January inclusive but will be back in operation from Monday 8 January 2024 with membership open to all. We would like to thank all the local businesses and members of the community for their support and interest over the past year and hope that our relationships will grow stronger and broader in the coming year/s.

Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report Tony Stewart - 0408 767 930

We have continued this month to help the Gympie homeless, with a $1,000 donation and we’ll give another $500 before the end of November. We are trying to keep our bank balance up as you never know what is around the corner. Income this month has mainly come from our bottle and can collections, so again a big thanks to the Big 4 at Carlo and all the generous donors in Tin Can Bay. Thank you to the wonderful drop offs in Rainbow Beach to our bins in Tingira Close. Garry, Mick, Carlos, Chris, and many more – a big thanks.

rainbowfishing@southernphone.com.au

O

NE MORE REPORT after this then the year has gone, very hard to believe as people talk about Christmas in early November. Well it’s been one of the driest years I have known here, with just over half our average rainfall. As I write things are looking more positive for good rains over large areas of Queensland. Here’s hoping for farmers as they have taken a real hit, as cattle and sheep prices are half of what they were last year.

And to Wayne in Tin Can Bay a huge thank you again for the sorting (we both have stuffed shoulders from lifting) and Bay Auto thanks for the use of the yard. Last month donations from Arthur at Tin Can B Bakery, Victory Bottleshop, and Mitchells was $145 with another $80 from Tin Can Bay bakery this month so far (at time of writing on 18 November). We received a very generous donation from Rainbow Beach RSL of $500. Thank you very much, and to the Dragon Boat ladies in Tin Can Bay thank you very much

for the $200 donation. Marcie Mills did the Christmas shopping with us and spent $85 on Bill Neil’s beautifully made wooden toys. Some of Bill’s other toys went out to Longreach for young children. Marcie wants more. Hopefully I can do the December Rainbow markets and sell more toys and goods there. I have plenty of mozzie coil holders to also sell, and these are great around home & camping with all proceeds going to the DroughtRunners. Call if you need them: 0408 767 930. Thank you all.

Wonderful Wildlife Quilts Lesley McCarthy

SMALL THROW or table topper with beautiful blue turtles and dolphins made by Jo Page is this month’s quilt photo. And also an Aussie wildlife panel has been cut and re-configured by Glenys Pearsall to create this beautiful quilt gift for Logan. I’m sure it will be well received. Our last day for 2023 will be 12 December when members will gather to have their annual Christmas Lunch, so as we come to the end of another busy year and start getting ready for Christmas, on behalf of the Tin Can Bay Quilters may I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. If you are travelling, take care and return safely from your travels, but most of all cherish the times spent with family and friends.

Feel free to join us in the New Year at the Tin Can Bay Community Centre, Amity Place, Tin Can Bay. We meet on Tuesdays from 9am till 12 noon. Visitors are most welcome.

O

UR HAPPIEST NEWS is that Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ Walk Organiser, Judy Kiddle, married Don Beaton at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club. Judy reports, “Everybody has said it’s the funniest, good fun wedding they have been to.” Judy and Don are very grateful to everyone who made it such a fun event. Welcome to our new member, Julie, walking in both CCWWers and the Tin Can Bay groups. Congratulations Sandy for achieving your first award, for 25 Walks. Congratulations to Ingrid and Jim on gaining your first Heart Foundation Walking badge to pin on your hat, third award certificate, and $15 voucher. Huge congratulations

Jack for your 200th HFWalk, thereby being awarded your second badge to pin on your hat, your fourth award certificate, and a $20 voucher to spend at the Heart Foundation online shop. We were sad to farewell long-term HF Walkers, Dixie and Ben Ford, who were a lively, supportive, positive, healthy part of One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay walking group before transferring to the CC Wheelie Walkers, now moved away from the Cooloola Coast. “Twins” Denise McKean and Kate Gregory continued walking and fundraising together for the National Heart Foundation throughout October’s MyMarathon, walking more than 329km, raising $1,204. Congratulations. The weather has been kind.

Linda, Ralph & Kristine, Judy, Val & Albert farewell Ben and Dixie.

Summer is here, so the start times have changed again. One Step at a Time TCB early group departs from the Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6am, the later group at 6.30am Wednesdays and Saturdays. Most of us enjoy a coffee on our return. CC Wheelie Walkers meet by 7.30am on Mondays and Fridays at the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre bus shelter on Nautilus Drive. EXCEPT on the last Friday of the month, when we meet near the Tin Can Bay swimming pool, so that we wheelie walk the Boardwalk and have a picnic morning tea afterward. This is a great opportunity for the Tin Can Bay walking group to walk and socialise

with the CCWWers. Walkers achieve happiness by getting out walking and talking, keeping it light, bright and cheerful! If anyone would like a wheelie walker (rollator), Mrs Judy Beaton will donate one IF it means there is another member in our Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers group. While our hearts are still beating, our feet are still walking during the festive season (except for Christmas Day). Any queries, contact Judy Beaton 5486 2181, or myself, Maggie1Travers@ gmail.com phone or text 0400 756 615. We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Don’t miss the last dance of 2023 Julie McPhail

COOLOOLA COAST DANCE GROUP

PATRONS ATTENDED a cooler night’s dance at Goomboorian Memorial Hall. Dancers came from Maryborough and surrounding towns. The lucky door prize was won by Robyn C, the meat tray was won by Jenny D, and the fruit and veg trays were won by Bev W and Joan D. The supper was enjoyed by everyone out in the cool night air. Our next dance will be our Christmas Dance on 16 December, with men being able to wear their Hawaiian shirts, the women to wear their best Christmas dress. Chris will play his choice of Christmas tunes throwing in some of his comical ditties which make us laugh out loud. Adults $12 and students $5. Visitors are welcome to join in supporting our once a month dance.

14

After the Christmas dance, our dances will resume in April 2024 when the weather is once again cooler for comfortable dancing. Merry Christmas to our patrons if we don’t get to see you at our last dance of the year in 2023 on 16 December. Stay safe on the roads and enjoy music.

From Ancient China to the Cooloola Coast Toni Archer

Some Brief Histories: In the past, we have profiled some of the members of the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club, so perhaps it is time to offer a short history of Dragon Boating. Dragon Boating Origins: As you would probably guess, Dragon Boating began in China. It began about 2,000 years ago in Southern China. It was initially a folk ritual designed to appease the rain gods, encourage rainfall, and celebrate the summer rice planting. It was in the 1970s that dragon boating gradually evolved from being a folk custom to become a modern, fully-fledged water sport. Over time, it has been modified as a sport and dragon boat races are now conducted in more than 30 nations. You may be interested to know that the Chinese dragon (always seen on dragon boats with its head on the prow and its tail on the stern) is known to the Chinese as the ‘Loong’. In Chinese culture, folklore, and mythology, dragons take many animal-like forms such as turtles and fish, but are most commonly depicted as snake-like with four legs. They traditionally symbolise potent powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Dragon Boating in Australia: Dragon boating had its Australian beginnings over 25 years ago when the West Australian Surf Life Saving Association was invited to the Penang (Malaysia) Dragon Boat Festival. It was the start of something that was destined to become a major participant sport around our country. From those early beginnings, dragon boating in Australia has gone from strength to strength. Some authorities now say that dragon boat racing is the fastest growing watersport in Australia.

T

HREE TIN CAN BAY Yacht Club Flying Fifteens attended the State Championships at Sandgate in late October. Day 1 of the Championships was run with 3 races in a 10-12 knot ENE breeze. Conditions were absolutely superb – clear skies, sparkling water and warm, but not hot. Day 2 conditions were more spicy with a 15-18 knot NE’ly and with a larger NE’ly swell which was great for surfing conditions. To say that the finishes were close would be an understatement, keeping the race officers busy. Although the Tin Can crowd didn’t bring home the silverware, it sounds like a great time was had by all. Congratulations to Peter Shaw and Jonah Sayer for winning the ‘Most Improved’ award

with an outstanding second day. Big thanks from Tin Can Bay to the PRO John Mitchell, and all the volunteers on the start boats, rescue boats, and the organisers. Back at home, the last series race saw 12 boats on the water. It seemed like it was going to be another blustery day but it turned out wonderful with a steady-‘ish’ easterly breeze. Off the water, there were spooky Halloween happenings with some gruesome characters attending the Friday night dinner. There were less scary characters and dressed in much more dapper outfits for the Melbourne Cup. Anyone wishing to have a try sailing, please join us on a Saturday Green fleet day. Check the Tin Cay Bay Yacht Club website for further information.

of the leader boards with only eight points separating first and second for the Inshore Club Championship, and ten points separating first and second for the Offshore Club Championship. The Ladies competition is also neck and neck with five points separating first to third. So it will come down to the wire at the weigh-in for the November Competition. Interclub Competition The Club’s annual Interclub Competition was held over the weekend of 9 & 10 September, it was our pleasure to welcome the Bribie Fishing Club (AFAQ), Landsborough Amateur Fishing Club, and the Power Boat Anglers Club. With 32 competitors – including 3 juniors – weighing in fish for the trip it was a very successful weekend. Thanks to all those who attended to make it a great weekend. Social Trips Offshore Tagalong Saturday 10 June 2023, 7 club members provided their boats to give new members and sponsors the opportunity to experience offshore fishing in the pristine waters offshore from Rainbow beach and Fraser Island. K’gari (Fraser Island) Social Trip 2023 – Waddy Point Friday 29 September 2023, 28 club members met at Gardiner Fisheries to prepare the convoy to head off to the Waddy Point Group Campground

on Fraser Island. The group travelled in 12 vehicles with the trip to Orchard Beach being uneventful which is always a great result. It was great to see the Barron family join the club and enjoy the weekend. The Waddy Point Group Campground was a great venue for this social trip with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service providing great facilities. We had a couple of late scratchings, the lucky devils got tickets to the NRL grand final! Social activities were the order of the day with the club providing a BBQ dinner on the Friday night with flame grilled steaks cooked over the designated fire ring. Junior Program Putting a large emphasis on our junior angler education we help equip young fishers with skills they will use over their lifetime. The Junior Program is designed to provide children with an outdoor educational experience that will give them the skills and knowledge to: Explore the beach safely; Fish sustainably; and appreciate the natural environment while having fun and being mentored by an experienced local fisherman. Holiday Road Safety

T

HE COOLOOLA COAST is renowned for its stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant communities – so it will come as no surprise that this beautiful place we get to call home is such a popular holiday destination for over a million visitors each year. Over the Christmas/New Year holiday period the population of our sleepy towns grows significantly, with both overnighters and day-trippers joining our communities for a taste of the good life. This means additional traffic on our local roads as well as an increase in drivers who are not familiar with our rural roads. Christmas should be a time of love and laughter, not a loss of life, but tragically it’s one of the most dangerous times on our roads. Two hundred lives were lost on Australian roads over the Christmas period in 2021 from December to January. In the lead up to Christmas the Australian Road Safety Foundation is inviting road users to make a personal promise to be the change they want to see on the road by choosing road safety. Sadly, in the Australian-wide road toll for 2022, 1,193 lives were lost. Of those, 555 were the driver, 235 were motorcyclists, 191 passengers, 164 pedestrians, 35 cyclists, and 13 other road users. It’s easy to discount those as simply numbers written on a page but each and every one of those 1,193 people was someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, friend, co-worker (and I speak from personal experience – in 1988 my brother was one of those numbers). Out of those 1,193 lives lost, 773 deaths occurred on rural roads (195 of which were in Queensland). For decades, federal and state governments have vigorously campaigned for road safety awareness; campaigns ranging from pulling at the heartstrings to full-on shock tactics, yet as drivers all these years later, we still seem to be complacent when it comes to road safety. In researching this article it was shocking to learn that 3 in 5 Australians admit they take risks on the road (research conducted by Pure Profile on behalf of Australian Road Safety Foundation between 3-9 March, 2023, with a sample size of n=1,016): • 51% of drivers admit that they speed • 43% of drivers admit that they use a mobile phone whilst behind the wheel • 28% drive whilst fatigued On rural roads those figures differ slightly with 41% admitting to speeding, 13% admitting to using a phone, but most alarmingly, 11% admit to crossing a double line! Of the above 3 in 5: • 28% of pedestrians admit to wearing headphones

• 28% of pedestrians text or use social media, and • 18% blindly follow the crowd without looking. So how can we as drivers on our rural roads be the change we want to see? Every road user must make important road safety decisions every time they are on or around our roads. To be prepared to make these splitsecond decisions that could save a life, we must have a plan. Road safety starts with us: • Always be fit to be on or around our roads – think about the effects of fatigue, drugs, and alcohol • Eliminate distractions and stay focused on the road, whether as a pedestrian, bike/scooter/ skateboard rider, or driver • Develop a plan prior to starting the journey – map the route and rest stops • Look and be seen when using the road – think clothing for visibility and protection, lights and reflectors • Attitude – think patience and courtesy • Scan the road ahead for potential hazards • Always maintain a safe following distance – think reaction time Things you can do ahead of time: • Ensure the vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or scooter is well maintained and in good working order • Include regular checks and services – good tyre tread, tyre pressure, oil and water levels, and light function • Pack the vehicle correctly – are the luggage and passengers secure? • Know how to change a tyre • If towing a trailer, caravan, or boat, ensure confidence and being well versed in ways of towing • Emergency plan – think contact numbers, radio stations, local government websites. Be prepared for the unexpected and drive to suit the conditions: • Weather conditions – check the forecast for severe storms, hail, fog, and heavy rain • Extreme weather events – think flood waters and bush fires • Changes in road conditions – think wet, gravel, ice, and snow (perhaps not a QLD issue) • Dust and unsealed roads – think variations and changes to road surfaces, reaction times and how that may affect the grip of the tyres • Wildlife – always scan the road ahead • What to do in case of an emergency – think

first aid kit, phone numbers, spare tyre/tools Be the change you want to see on the road: • Take personal responsibility • Improve your in-car behaviour and model good practices • Share your road safety resilience plan • Take the Road Safety Promise* As residents and visitors explore the scenic Cooloola Coast, prioritising road safety is not just a responsibility but a necessity. By practicing patience, respecting the speed limits, being aware of wildlife and practicing proper vehicle maintenance, we as a community can contribute to a safer road environment this holiday season. The keys to road safety are in all our hands. Together, we can ensure that the Cooloola Coast remains a haven for both natural beauty and safe travels. On that note, I take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. Be sure to look out for friends and neighbours as for some this time of year can be a lonely one. Also, a special shoutout to our first responders and emergency services providers who will be on call over the holidays. Take care and see you in the New Year! Speed Limit Change to Tin Can Bay Road I

N THE FACE OF recent crashes and the tragic loss of lives along Tin Can Bay Road, the local Traffic and Road Safety Committee caused an assessment of the Gympie to Goomboorian section of Tin Can Bay Road to be completed in line with the current standards. Due to the geometry of the road, traffic volumes and use, and the crash history over the past five years, the assessment supported the reduction of the speed limit.

The Speed Management Committee in consultation with Translink supported the reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h. Signage has commenced with most outbound signs erected, with works ongoing to install all inbound signs from Goomboorian to Gympie. Once all signage is installed, motorists will be given 28 days grace before any enforcement action is commenced by Police. SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

T

HE STUNNING contrast of the dazzling bright blue wings and white belly make the forest kingfisher a jewel of the natural world.

Feasting on invertebrates, small frogs, and lizards, this brilliantlycoloured bird will search from a high perch for prey, then swoop

down to the land or water to grab its meal. They build their nests in termite nests and generally lay between 3 to 6 eggs. Fledglings are fed for approximately a month before they leave the nest to test their wings.

– cooloola city farm PLANT OF THE MONTH –

Ronnie Timperon

Rainbow Beach Learning Community Homeschooling children were able to experience some very cool activities in November at the Community Centre with Mo, our resident art tutor, continuing to teach valuable skills such as perspective. Local drama teacher Sheryl Anderson is running a drama group with one mother commenting “The drama sessions have been fantastic for our nine-year-old girl – her confidence is building and she gets so much joy out of the sessions.” Another day they learned all about spiders through hands-on activities such as creating a spider’s web using scientific calculations, while the younger ones researched interesting spider facts such as: the average house has 30 spiders that live for around 2 years, and all spiders produce silk that is stored as a liquid in their stomach and becomes solid when it is exposed to air. Our recent camp at Dunethin Rock Scout Campground on the banks of the Maroochy River attracted 17 families from both the Gympie and Rainbow Beach Learning Communities. It was a great time for everyone where we enjoyed canoeing, swimming, making a bush mobile, whittling, an outdoor movie night, a talent night with children as young as 3 sharing a joke or demonstrating a skill, and being able to have time to get to know each other better. A highlight of our camp was a visit to Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli where we met a fabulous medieval knight called Sir Justyn who enthralled us

with tales of battles, weapons, and armour that the young people could try on to see what it would have been like for knights of old. One young man was so inspired he asked his mum to buy him a sword from the gift shop for his birthday the next day (and she obliged!). The Community Centre Coolaflix night we hosted on Saturday 11 November was a wonderful evening featuring the Australian movie ‘Oddball,’ based on a true story about a maremma sheepdog who saved a colony of penguins living on an island off the city of Warrnambool in Victoria. Maremmas are an ancient Italian breed of herding dogs used to protect flocks from predators, and local maremma owner Steve Boyce kindly allowed his dog Clancy to attend the

movie night so that children could see one in the flesh. Clancy clearly loved being patted and having his photo taken with the moviegoers.

Community Pantry The Brisbane kitchen of FareShare Qld that provides free frozen meals to the Community Pantry has just celebrated their five year anniversary and has cooked more delicious, nutritious meals than the entire population of Queensland. From the first dish of chicken and vegetable casserole, their chefs have cooked 5.8 million meals, using 2.5 million kilos of rescued food, with the assistance of nearly 1,500 regular volunteers donating 100,000 hours of their time. The menu has evolved from family serves of traditional casseroles, braises and soups, to roasts, stir fries, seafood, and Thai, Malaysian and Sri Lankan curries. You can donate to FareShare and help support families in need via their website at: www.fareshare.net.au/ donate-qld/ with donations over $2 being tax-deductible. FareShare meals are transported to Rainbow Beach by Gympie Refrigerated Transport free of charge, for which we are extremely grateful

and form part of regular fortnightly hampers that are available to Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach residents for $10 each. The hampers also include staple pantry items from Foodbank Brisbane that are transported to Rainbow Beach by McClintock’s Transport and Rainbow Beach Transport. We also receive donations of food from Woolies Cooloola, Rainbow Beach & Tin Can Bay IGA, and Ed’s Beach Bakery which ensure our hampers are truly great value. The Community Pantry is in the final stages of setting up a second distribution point at the rear of the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall where we will be distributing hampers and frozen meals on the opposite fortnight to Rainbow Beach. Our clientele from Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay make up half of the hamper orders, so having a place at Cooloola where they can access food will be of great benefit to them. To order a hamper for yourself or someone who needs a helping hand, contact us via text 0413 135 867 or hop onto the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry Facebook page and send us a message. Pindari Life Ltd, a local charity based in Gympie, provides the pantry with governance and support. Foodbank Qld that provides the supplies for our amazing hampers has recently developed ‘A Taste of Home,’ a range of wonderful recipes featuring fresh Queensland produce from juicy mangoes to spicy chillies! This month’s recipes are banana bread and watermelon & grilled haloumi salad, with bananas being one of Foodbank’s most rescued fruits – in the last year alone, they have rescued more than 160,000 kilograms of this delicious Queensland fruit. Each recipe is accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and vibrant photos that will inspire you. What makes these recipes truly special is the purpose which is to highlight Foodbank Queensland’s food rescue program and the wonderful produce that is harvested so close to home. You can sign up for these recipes by emailing: recipes@ foodbankqld.org.au

Audrey featured on Along with giing we also have some beau bou que Christmas ClarefulAgents website decora ons that will elevate your home, fes ve-style *chef’s kiss* Glaze And Amaze Ange is one of the team members at Tin Can Bay IGA – she is one of our beau ful deli ladies who is oen working hard to feed the hungry locals. This year Ange has chosen to glaze the Christmas ham with a sweet marmalade jam. This is her step by step guide to glazing your ham at home:

Who wouldn’t want some extra cash just in me for Christmas! This event is a great day out for the whole family, a place where you can expect to celebrate community. Last year we had an excep onal turnout and this year we hope for even bigger as the word spreads around. Rainbow Beach IGA annual Christmas party will be held on 22nd of December, 9am-11am, where you can expect to see face pain ng, BBQ,lLive music, and raffles. This is a smaller but cosy event and is definitely worth aending if you fancy a snag and some Christmas cheer. Stay safe and be merry, and keep shopping local. See you next year!

Super Easy Sweet Marmalade Jam Christmas Ham Glaze 1. Peel off the skin of the ham 2. Lightly score the fat making a crisscross or diamond shape 3. Poke holes through the ham for the marmalade to absorb into 4. Rub over marmalade in a thick layer and let sit in in the fridge for 48 hours 5. Bake on 140°C for 10 minutes per kilo, bas ng in-between 6. Half an hour before ham is done, place slices of orange on the ham secured with toothpicks and finally add a cherry to orange slices by sliding the cherry down the tooth pick.

Make this simple - but sensational glazed ham. Check out Ange’s recipe

Voila! A deliciously simple glazed ham that will impress at a family lunch! It’s Christmas Party Time! 21st of December Santa is coming to the Tin Can Bay IGA annual Christmas party!
