Parkrun themes for March!

THE WES MITCHELL PARK parkrun is more than just walking or running a course or volunteering a few moments to make the event happen, it’s a family. And families have fun!

This March there’s a couple of Saturdays that organisers are introducing a little bit of a challenge for participants and volunteers –theme setting.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, the 9 March parkrun is calling all women to embrace the theme of Inspiring Inclusion by getting out on the course for the first time or event assisting with a volunteer role.

Go the extra mile and join the IWD colours of white, green and purple. Come on girls, let’s get out there!

While there’s no hot cross buns at the finish line, Easter Saturday is the perfect time to hop along to parkrun

and work off all the chocolate this time of year brings so get in the Easter groove with some bunny ears or maybe a tail? Surprise us!

The Wes Mitchell Park parkrun is held every Saturday morning from 7am sharp, starting at Wes Mitchell Park in Tin Can Bay opposite the library. The 5km course takes you along the foreshore along a sealed path and through bushland reserves.

Santa brought the Rainbow Beach Boardriders Club a new marquee and rashies this year and we are stoked! Telstra Outage Survey

“I wanted to return to the place where I wrote the majority of my debut novel,” explains Arie. “It felt like the perfect place to hold my book launch and was well received and supported by the closeknit community.”

AINBOW BEACH COMMERCE and Tourism are taking action regarding the recent Telstra outage due to the significant impact on Rainbow Beach business operations as it occurred during the crucial holiday season and lasted for six days.

In preparation for advocacy on improving telecommunications resilience in Rainbow Beach to Telstra and other agencies, Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism are conducting a survey to gather data on the impact of the recent digital outage as well as identifying potential measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Chamber also acknowledges that the Telstra outage has affected residents’ well-being and everyday lives, which has a flow on effect through the township so residential feedback is also welcomed for a holistic representation of the economic and social impacts.

Scouts a Washout

I

T WAS WITH great sadness the Centenary Gympie Scout Unit had to cancel the demonstration camp in Lions Park Tin Can Bay in February due to weather associated risks as safety comes first.

However, the unit are still busy practising, preparing and working hard to take on competing Units at the Kiwi Woggle at Easter so hopefully it all pays off with a win.

Regardless of the outcome, being a Scout is more than learning skills. It is an extension of family that develops youth to adulthood with confidence development and integrity.

Are you 18 or over and keen to be a scout leader? Interest is being gauged for adults willing to undergo leadership training with a view for starting a Cooloola Coast Scouts Group.

REGISTRATIONS ARE now open for the annual Mother’s Day Classic held in Tin Can Bay on the second Sunday in May (12 May 2024), starting from Wes Mitchell Park.

Join in this national movement to stamp out cancer with life saving research fundraising. This year there is a choice to donate your raised funds to either breast cancer or ovarian cancer or both! You decide where your efforts go.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY is held on 8 March each year and is a recognition, reflection, and call for continued advocacy for better outcomes for women all over the world.

The 2024 theme is Inspire Inclusion because when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.

To celebrate and reflect as women, Soul from the Belly will be hosting a free movement session and social event on Thursday 7 March from 9.30am to 11am at 110 Emperor St in Tin Can Bay.

Soul from the Belly artistic director Jess Milne knows that for women to stand tall they need to be strong.

“To be comfortable in your body is a vital link in becoming the best version of yourself” explains Jess.

So the combination of music, movement, and lots of laughter in the style of Soul from the Belly will be an opportunity for ladies to come together and create some positive energy. Wear comfortable clothing and bring an open mind.

Women of all abilities are invited to attend as the morning will be a safe space to share a moment, make a positive memory, and take away inspiration that you can do anything if you want it.

Linen donation

NEW RAINBOW SANDS manager Mia Kenway has kindly donated bed linen surplus to their requirements to add to our Evacuation Centre inventory. This wonderful act gives us greater capacity to comfortably accommodate evacuees in the (hopefully unlikely) event we are activated.

Our thanks to Mia and the new Rainbow Sands owners Blackwood Development, to Gympie Regional Council for providing the vacuum seal bags, and to our volunteers Denise Orr and Marianne Sellick who spent considerable time sorting and bagging the linen.

Evacuation centre volunteers received Red Cross training last year but new volunteers are always sought. If you are interested in training for an evacuation centre role, or putting your name down as a contact in the event of an emergency please contact our office on 5486 3355.

Rainbow Beach SES is always looking for new members as well. If you are new to the area and want to meet people, this is a good way to be active as well as make friends in your new community.

More grant success!

WE ARE GRATEFUL to have been granted a refurbished desktop computer from Gympie Regional Council’s Community Desktop Computer grants program.

This recent model will be used on our reception desk and the laptop and monitor that is currently there will be repurposed for our volunteers to use for other administration tasks.

D UE TO UNFORESEEN circumstances, there will be no film night this month. Apologies to our faithful band of attendees. It will be back in April.

WE WELCOME OUR newest office volunteers

Jenny Brown and James Crowley. Both come to us with a wealth of experience from very different and interesting careers.

CIRS has a wide variety of tasks and roles for volunteers. Our office volunteers manage hall and meeting room bookings, market enquiries, book sales, assist with printing, photocopying and scanning documents for customers, as well as general enquiries.

We have helped people activate their new mobile phones, set up MyGov accounts and access other government online services. We never really know what someone might need help with but we usually find the information they need.

We also have other volunteer roles with our markets, our Emergency Relief service, our CoolaFlix film nights, and various projects as they arise.

If you would like to do something worthwhile for your community, why not volunteer with us?

It doesn’t matter if you can only spare a few hours a week or a month, or just want to work in one area or on one activity - we’ll be able to find the perfect role for you.

OUR EMERGENCY RELIEF program has expanded to include Cooloola Cove Veterans & Community Hall every second Thursday, alternating with Rainbow Beach now every other fortnight, to coincide with Community Pantry’s dates.

We are still doing Tin Can Bay in the Library Meeting Room every Tuesday afternoon. Rainbow Beach dates will be 7 & 21 March, Cooloola Cove will be March 14 & 28. Sessions at all three locations will be from 1pm to 3pm.

No appointment necessary. Please bring ID and Centrelink CRN if applicable.

WE LOVE OUR volunteers and so we applied for funding for our Volunteer Comfort Zone project.

Thanks to a Gympie Regional Council’s Community Volunteers Grant, we were able to purchase two sets of lockers to store our volunteers’ personal belongings while they volunteer.

With Council’s assistance, we are delighted to announce that we have now subscribed to the new volunteer management app Involve.

This app allows us to manage volunteer details confidentially, contact volunteers simultaneously, maintain records of volunteer hours, do up rosters and all can be done remotely. It also gives volunteers instant access to rosters and all our volunteer opportunities.

Developed by Volunteering WA and endorsed by Volunteering Australia, this new app is designed by volunteers for volunteers.

AFTER COUNTLESS hours of preparation over the past year, it is with much excitement that we announce the commencement of our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program.

OSHC opened its doors at Rainbow Beach State School on Monday 26 February 2024 and we would like to welcome our staff Paulina Beerling and Jayne West as Centre Coordinators and Jasmin Murphy a Educator. With many years of combined experience we look forward to what the team will bring to our community.

During the startup phase OSHC will be open 6.00am - 8.30am and 2.30pm - 5.30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the school term. In addition there will also be a school holiday program so keep an eye out on our P&C Facebook page for Vacation Care dates and activities.

We would like to send out a BIG thankyou to everyone who contributed to getting OSHC off the ground. Be it financial support, helping with fundraising, or the countless hours volunteered by our OSHC executive committee and P&C, it would not have been possible without the combined effort!

The P&C Annual General Meeting has been set for Wednesday 20 March at 4.00pm in the school library. We welcome and encourage anyone to attend.

Other great news is that Tuckshop will be starting again soon. Big thank you to Michael and Amy, the owners of Frying Fish for taking this on. On behalf of the P&C and student families, we are looking forward to this commencing!

Finally, the Student Council recently hosted their very first Skate Night. There were skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, and bikes all following tracks and obstacle courses setup on the oval and basketball court. Overall it was a great success and the students had an absolute blast.

We recently saw our elected Student Leaders; Wyatt Huckel, Braydon Hill, Libby Bennett, Pearl Gage, Kaida Nguyen, Audrey Permezel, Hunter Else, and Fletcher Permezel receive their badges on parade.

A very proud moment for students and parents alike. As a school we value and appreciate their efforts and want to support them to reach their leadership goals.

In a couple of weeks, we have two significant events that we believe will provide opportunities to understand and develop their understanding of what it takes to be a leader.

The first will be the National Young Leaders Day in Brisbane and the second will be a more hands-on experience hosted by Cooloola Christian College in Gympie. We look forward to seeing our Student Leaders engage in both activities.

School Zone Road Signs

You will notice the new signs look similar to standard school zone signs with the addition of a red flashing ring around the speed limit as well as two flashing yellow lights at the top. We are very grateful as the installation of flashing light school zone signs is proven to improve visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder for motorists to slow down.

Recently, they have not been working and authorities have been made aware. Until they are repaired, please continue to be hypervigilant in or around our school zones.

THE MAKING OF Rainbow Beach

History book is now available again after the printing of another 100 copies which we received in early February. The first 200 copies sold within three weeks with $10 of each book going to charity.

Sales from the third 100 has been used to pay back the author’s printing costs for ink cartridges etc, with the balance of this and sales of the 4th 100 going to another charity to be decided.

Books are available from 7th Wave Rainbow Beach Tourist Information

Centre, Silk & Stone, Rainbow Beach Post Office, and Shell Tourist Centre. Also available from Tin Can Bay Post Office, Tin Can Bay Newsagency, Tin Can Bay Holiday Village, as well as the Gympie Tourist Information Centre at the Duck Ponds.

The book has 76 contributor stories, with many contributed by 80 and 90 year olds who grew up and worked in the Rainbow Beach/Tin Can Bay area in the mid 1960s and 1970s.The publication is 306 A4 Pages.

This donation was a complete surprise but very much appreciated – rest assured, the funds will be put to good use.

In this edition, we’re featuring one of our very valued TCBCAMS members – Rob Norris. Rob is our ‘Raffle Master’ – running the lunchtime Sunday Raffles at the Sleepy Lagoon pub in Tin Can Bay where meat trays, Sleepy Lagoon schooner tickets, and food and drink vouchers sponsored by the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club are

all up for grabs.

Rob joined TCBCAMS over four years ago and has gleaned many good friends in doing so. Rob has been an active member of Sailability and still is a regular and valuable driver for Cooloola Coast Medical Transport.

Come and meet him at ‘The Shed’. We’re open 9am-Noon every weekday, with Tuesdays and Thursdays being specifically reserved as Men Only days.

Get set for St Patrick’s Day at the Tin Can Bay RSL

AS I EMERGE from my dream, Robert’s amazing baritone voice is fading into the final lyrics of the heart rending Danny Boy ‘I’ll simply sleep in peace until you come to me’.

“Begorrah,” I think to myself (which is surprising as I don’t have an ounce of Irish blood in me), “It must be nearly time for the St Patrick’s Day Luncheon at the RSL.”

And so it is. This year’s famous St Patrick’s Day Luncheon at the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch will be held on Sunday 17 March 2024 from 12pm. There will be a two-course meal for $20 with meal choices and payment to be made when booking.

Coolabay Choir feeling the Love!

COOLABAY CHOIR members love to sing, but on Valentine’s Day we sang to love – with a stirring rendition of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at our weekly rehearsal. In keeping with the theme, Choir Director Pam Graham shared bouquets of heart-shaped chocolates with those present.

The well-known theme from the movie Titanic is just one of many songs in our repertoire, which covers a broad range of songs and genres –some old, some new, rounds, singalongs, and three-part harmonies.

Coolabay Choir is a non-auditioned community choir, open to all. We are keen to welcome new members. No prior experience or ability to read music is required.

Coolabay Choir meets for an hour on Wednesdays at 3pm in the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall (behind Woolies).

AFTER A VERY enjoyable year, Cooloola Coast Probus members are already out and about enjoying themselves in 2024.

In January a group attended the Morning Melodies at the Gympie RSL featuring entertainer Graeme Jensen, who is personally known to some members.

It was a most enjoyable morning with Graeme singing some of our favourite songs, followed by lunch and raffles (no winners this time for us!). We also had time to chat to fellow members and sing along with Graeme.

On Monday 12 February, members attended the annual Ecumenical Service hosted by Gympie Widgee Probus Club at the Wesleyan Church, Southside. This is a special service when the Presidents’ collars of office are blessed and we pray for a happy and successful year ahead.

The service was conducted by Wesleyan Church pastor, the Reverend Gary McClintock, who has a great sense of humour and also entertained us with a special message for this year – you get what you expect. We are all expecting a great year

ahead full of Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship.

Members of Probus Clubs from all over the Wide Bay attended and it was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. We also enjoyed a delicious morning tea served by the Wesleyan Church ladies before heading to the Phoenix Hotel for lunch (even though we were not that hungry!) and then held our monthly meeting.

In March we will hold our monthly general meeting, followed by the Annual General Meeting, when the committee will be selected to administer the club for the 2024 Probus year which runs from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.

We are looking forward to a great year with a mix of regular monthly events and some new activities and trips for the enjoyment of all members.

Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and a break for afternoon tea and a chat.

WELL AFTER A short break away it’s back to business as usual, as I try to catch up with what has been happening in our local area. I know nothing much has changed with the plight of the homeless as I have witnessed many in my travels, carrying their belongings over the

shoulder in any old bag.

Whilst away I witnessed the disastrous fire in the East Grampians, with the loss of nearly 50 homes along with huge stock losses. The country there carries 3-4 sheep per acre as it is some of the best land in the country. I originally lived on the western side of the Grampians so I know the area well.

The DroughtRunners have decided to donate $2,000 to the farmers relief centre, which is all we can afford at present.

Last month we continued to donate $1,000 to the Gympie homeless. Even though we have given away our major fundraising from the Big4 to the Mens Shed at Tin Can Bay we are still collecting bottles and cans at

our bins at 10 Tingira Close, Rainbow Beach.

A big thanks to the Tin Can Bay Bakery and Mitchells Fruit & Veg for taking donations in the collection tins.

Art Group gears up for exciting events

THIS MONTH Cooloola Coast Art Group have been making preparations for the Gympie Studio Trail and the biennial art show. There have been several outings for pleinair, life drawing, and get-togethers at Tuncunba Hall.

A date has been set for the studio trail on 6 and 7 July with two group members opening their studios to the public and the art group using the RSL Hall at Tin Can Bay for its venue. Running concurrently with this is the Cooloola Coast Art Group’s biennial show from 4 - 7 July, also at the RSL Hall.

On Tuesday’s the group meets at Tuncunba Hall where tutoring is provided for beginners and is open to anyone wishing to join in.

A still life is often set up and participants are invited to either work on their own or be assisted. This is also the case on Monday for life drawing and at plein-air sessions.

Join Walkers for International Women’s Day Twilight Walk

COOLOOLA COVE Wheelie Walkers’ last Friday of each month’s Boardwalk and Picnic morning tea is very popular with the “CCWW” and the “One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay” walking groups.

As Australia Day fell on the last Friday of January, this theme was evident in clothing, flags, plus lamingtons, billy tea, and fresh damper to enjoy.

Our annual International Women’s Day Twilight Walk will start at the Norman Point Rotunda at sunset, 6.11pm on Friday 8 March. We walk along the path then onto the Boardwalk, along the foreshore and return to Norman Point.

The lovely ladies of the Tin Can Bay Qld Country Women’s Association are providing fruit and drinks for us after our walk. Everyone is welcome to join our Twilight Walk at 6pm.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress”. The campaign theme is “Inspire Inclusion”.

20 Must See and Dos

Patrolled Beach

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands

Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek

Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland

A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point

Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Freshwater Picnic Area

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk

Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point

Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point

For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

Great Sandy Strait

If you love the wonderful peace and relaxation of sailing or cruising, the sheltered waters around Tin Can Bay are for you. You may see dugong, turtles, dolphins in this section of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Fraser and Cooloola Great Walks

A 90 km trail showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island between Dilli Village and Happy Valley. Or trek 102 km from Noosa to Rainbow Beach through sandblows, past lakes and spectacular views.

Fraser Island K’gari

World heritage listed, K’gari has over 40 lakes, rainforests, sand dunes, wildlife, four wheel driving and fishing! Take a 1 or 2 day tour, hire a 4WD or take your own. Cross the barge at Inskip Point, permits are online or at the Parks Office.

HOW NICE TO be back at our branch. All members had a good break and are keen to enjoy the 2024 calendar for the community. Our branch has now resumed our meetings Hoy and Craft for 2024 and have lots of events planned.

Our branch sent all the items we had made over the break, distributed donations of knitted items to Nambour, Gympie, and Sunshine

Coast Hospitals. They were greatly appreciated, we had requests for more as their stock was depleted.

Thank you to all the members that kept those knitting needles going over the holiday time, see the photo of a member’s contribution over the holidays.

Our first Country Kitchen Workshop for 2024, “Cooking on a Budget” was held on 27 February at our CWA Hall. We have planned workshops bimonthly. “Cooking for one or two“ will be held on 30 April, more details to come.

Our Executive committee has done our planning for the year and look forward to holding our High Tea and Competitions in May. Competitions are open to the public, all the details in next month’s issue, popular event.

Elwyn is our birthday girl for our branch, at our meetings every month she makes members a birthday corsage from her garden. Members surprised Elwyn last month with a lovely corsage and a cake made by Dawn from all the members.

Jo’s quilt was made for a family member who is an avid Richmond supporter in the Aussie Rules Football. Jo was able to stitch out the tiger in the centre on her embroidery machine to complete what will become, I’m sure, a cherished gift.

A note for anyone wanting to learn quilting basics, a class will be starting on 30 April, and we will endeavour to run it on the last Tuesday of every month. Annual comp ‘Olives’ up to high expectations!

THIS YEAR’S Olive Dish Trophy was held at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club on Friday 26 January. The annual competition between the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club, the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club, and Sailability is traditionally held to help celebrate Australia Day.

As many of you will know, Sailability is an organisation that helps special needs people to get on the water and enjoy the breezes and thrills of sailing on Tin Can Bay’s beautiful waterways; their tiny sailing boats are universally known as ‘Bugs’.

Laughter, fun, competition and, apparently, a tiny morsel of skullduggery were the order of the day during the competition. The competition includes dragon boat races, kayak races, sailing races, egg and spoon races, a thong throwing contest, and a Lilo paddling race.

This set the pattern for almost the rest of the day. The next item on the program was the thong throwing contest. Apparently, this is where some of the skullduggery took place with the Dragons again taking the maximum three points.

Soon after the thong throwing, the kayak races were held with two males and two female kayakers competing for each team. Once again, the Dragons took maximum points. This was beginning to look like a lay-down misère!!

The following egg and spoon race and then the Bug race were also both won by the dragons. Kay Muir of the Dragons was facing two up-andcoming young sailors in the Bugs but managed to bring home the win.

The day started off wet with many members pondering whether or not the event would go ahead. Despite the weather, the dragon boat races started at 9am and as you might have guessed, the Dragons came home

It might be true to say that by this time, everyone except the Dragons were becoming bored/frustrated by the endless string of dragon boat club wins. However, they did exact some revenge when the Dragons were beaten into second place for the Lilo-paddling race. The final results tally was Cooloola Dragons 20 points;

Tin Can Bay Yacht Club 13 points; and Sailability 9 points. The Dragons were elated since this is the first time since 2017 that they have managed to get their hands on the Olive Dish.

Congratulations to the Dragons on their win and congratulations and thanks to all those people who participated, assisted, and supported their respective teams throughout the day.

The last few weeks haven’t been visually dramatic, though the detailed work in aligning the build frames and preparing the parts which form the

backbone of the boat is critical to a quality outcome.

Plus there’s the time-consuming repetition of sanding every part and sealing with epoxy resin.

Stems for bow and stern: Lamination completed, machined to correct thickness, sanded, sealed with epoxy resin, then repeat the last two steps, and again.

Hog (inner keel): Scarf-jointed 2 pieces of Hoop Pine into one perfectly straight 6.5m length, sanded, sealed with epoxy resin, and repeat, and again.

4x Plywood ribs laminated, sealed with epoxy resin, sanded, re-coated with resin, mounted onto build frames, chamfered to match the curve profile of the planks that will come in a few weeks.

WELL, FEBRUARY WAS very similar to January, fishing wise that is, due to the influences of the cyclone, low barometer, unsuitable winds that all made fishing difficult. This unfavourable weather greeting our fishos tested endurance and patience right across the month.

However there were some notable success stories. Club member

Chris Rippon ticked his box with an impressive bay-caught 98cm Barramundi amongst other fish for the day and proudly all released to fight another day. Ron Cox and Dereck

Andrews snared a good haul of Cod with a couple coming in around the 70cm mark.

Malcolm Kay produced a nice bag of Pearl Perch and Snapper, but unfortunately sharks, aka “The Taxman” accounted for most of the rest of our fishing. Barry Nalder also picked up a nice pair of Flathead around the 50cm mark, also released to fight again.

Our monthly get-together at the clubhouse was to have a guest speaker on the topic of Depth Sounders however circumstances prevented this event going ahead. However this didn’t stop the social aspect of this monthly get together and a lot of stories and experiences were shared over a burger and soft drink.

FEBRUARY’S COMPETITION is done and dusted. A go as you please (GAUP) event held between Noosa River Mouth and the northern tip of Fraser Island on 10 and 11 February 2024.

Lines down at 4am Saturday with lines up at 12pm Sunday. Weigh was at The Deck@Sea Salt. Tides: Low tide 0.28m at 1.51am, high tide 2.33m at 8.29am, low tide 0.40m at 2.58pm, high tide of 1.74m at 8.41pm (Noosa Head times). We fished the dark moon.

Well done to our Juniors with Mia Pinney the winner with 4 points, followed by guest competitor Jake w ith 1 point.

The next competition is scheduled for 9 and 10 March 2024, a local GAUP event with lines down at 4am Saturday and lines up at noon Sunday. Weigh in at 1pm. Target species will be: Inshore - Flathead, Offshore - Sweetlip, Junior - Bream.

Threadfin Salmon and Barramundi, this is to be held on 20 March.

Something for a change is a Beach Fishing day to Teewah around 22 March. All these dates are subject to change or cancellation depending on the weather.

Our club members are very keen to keep up the momentum of the workshops /information sessions such as the Threadfin presentation that was held earlier and there a plans in the mix for subjects such as knot tying, safety equipment checks and maintenance, correct crab pot

set up and usage and when possible the depth sounder skills will come to fruition.

With offshore cancelled, members turned their efforts to inshore areas for this competition. Big Tailor, Whiting, Bream, Mangrove Jack, Grunter, Dart, and Mud Crabs were aplenty!

It was great to see many new junior and adult members at our first 2024 weigh in. Congratulations to inshore winner Gary Enklemann with a solid win with 39 points, followed by John Hollingworth with 17 points and Travis Pinney with 11 points.

A solid effort was also put in by the offshore fishermen with Jim McGuckin who turned his efforts to the straights to record 8 points followed by Stuart Peall on 1 point and Brock Heal also with 1 point.

Crab Competition 2024

This year the club is trialling a new species for the 2024 season. Our first trip on 10 February saw the addition of Mud Crab into the competition circuit as a standalone comp.

As our club trips are all based around the moon, every trip this year should fall on prime times to crab. Awesome news for those members young and old that love to get out crabbing.

Rules are simple and points are awarded in the same way as our current system.

Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers Report

• A grade crabs can only be weighed

• 5 crab bag limit can be weighed in

• Crabs must be alive & tied or restrained with the use of a apparatus such as a crab cuff

• All other QLD fisheries regulations must be followed.

How are points awarded:

All crabs will be weighed individually and 1, 2, or 3 points will be awarded respectively.

• 700g - 1100g = 1 POINT

• 1101g - 1500g = 2 POINTS

• 1501g + = 3 POINTS

Crab comp is open to all junior, cadet, and adult members. Monthly prizes will be awarded during this first year’s trial with prize packs being provided by our sponsor Cab’N’Gear. Points will be accumulated as per normal, with end of year awards for overall Heaviest crab of the year, most overall points and runner up overall point.

RBAA’s first winner of the newly introduced competition and recipient of the Crab’nGear prize pack for February was Craig Splatt. Craig had some beautiful A grade crab and has set the benchmark for heaviest muddie of the year at 1.110kg.

Deadly Health

This term, the ‘Deadly Young Person’s Program’ launched at Tin Can Bay P-10 State School. The program is available to all First Nation students from Years 7-10 and is designed to motivate, challenge and educate through a series of engaging activities.

Spanning over eight weeks, the program aims to raise health awareness and promote a better understanding of cultural identity among students. It acknowledges the unique challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths and seeks to address them in a manner that is both empowering and respectful of their cultural heritage.

The program will be facilitated by Aunty Maria Mitchell-Brown –an Advance Health Worker with Queensland Health. Aunty Maria is not

only well-versed in health and wellbeing but also deeply connected to cultural roots, providing a learning experience that is both enriching and authentic.

NAPLAN Success

The 2023 results are in! In an outstanding demonstration of educational excellence, Tin Can Bay School has emerged as the third top-performing school in the Gympie region according to an independent analysis of the Year 5 and 9 tests in the 2023 National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results.

Principal, Mr Daman Weir stated, “This remarkable achievement highlights the school’s commitment to fostering a high-quality learning environment and underscores the dedication of its staff and students.”

In 2024, Tin Can Bay P-10 State School is aiming to build on this success proving that with the right approach and commitment, excellence in education is within reach.

NAPLAN 2024 for Years

3, 5 7 & 9 is scheduled to start on Wednesday 13 March 2024 and finish on Monday 25 March 2024. The assessments are based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.

Road Safety Day

On 13 February, the Year 10 students embarked on a journey to Gympie for an immersive Road Safety Education program. Collaborating

with other schools from the district, the students delved into a day filled with invaluable lessons and eyeopening activities.

These activities emphasised the importance of road courtesy and consideration and the significance of accommodating all road users, including trucks, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Hearing from local police officers not only provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of road laws and regulations but also offered personal anecdotes, serving as powerful reminders of the real-life consequences of reckless driving.

The students were deeply moved by the firsthand accounts of crash survivors like Meg and the parents of an 18-year-old victim, underscoring the profound impact of road safety education and reinforcing the urgency of responsible driving practices.

The Road Safety Education excursion proved to be a transformative experience, equipping the students with the knowledge, skills, and empathy necessary to navigate the roads safely and responsibly.

Fishing Shirt Day

On 2 February the staff and students of the school supported the family of Levi Hanna by wearing fishing shirts.

Each student gave a gold coin donation to raise money for a memorial bench in Levi’s honour.

COUNCIL Corner

REPA Road Works Begin

Roads identified in council’s flood recovery works REPA Construction Package 3, residents will start to see ‘Building Resilient Region’ construction signage as from now to mid-2025 council will be delivering works on a priority basis.

With the reconstruction activities, some works need to be undertaken by varied and specialist contractors, and others can be done by council crews. Illegal Dumping

Gympie Regional Council supported by the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation partnered with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and initiated an illegal dumping crackdown in the Gympie region.

Council received funding from the Queensland Government to investigate and enforce cases of illegal dumping in June 2023. After seven months, several positive outcomes have been achieved for the local environment and the community.

To date, the program has led to the successful cleanup of 23 sites, totalling 125,800 litres of rubbish removed across the region, with all cleanups undertaken by the identified offenders. This approach has resulted in a significant cost saving of an estimated $60,000 for the community as the responsibility for cleanup efforts no longer sits with the council as it had historically.

Penalties for illegal dumping include onthe-spot fines for individuals of up to $3,096, with corporations facing fines of up to $11,610.

Residents are strongly encouraged to report instances of illegal dumping incidents to Gympie Regional Council by calling 1300 307 800 or the State Pollution Hotline on 1300 130 372.

Flood Mitigation Survey

Council has embarked on a process to gain a better understanding of flood risk, the real cost of flooding to the community, and to identify options and opportunities to manage flood risk - both now and into the future. The purpose of this Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan project is to identify potential options to manage the flood risk across the region.

Throughout the project, the community will play an important role in shaping how future floods are planned for and managed.

Residents are invited to have your say on flood risk management completing a quick survey as it will allow council better understand the communities knowledge on flooding, how it has affected them, and preferences on how flood risks are managed. Tin Can Bay Dog Off Leash Park

Council is seeking feedback on the development of a fenced off-leash dog park facility in Tin Can Bay. This project aims to enhance recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors, and council is eager to hear the community’s thoughts to understand the desired amenities to be included in the dog park and the location. The suggested fenced off-leash dog park locations include Norman Point/Les Lee Park, H.A. Chooky Mallet Park, the vacant land next to the Tin Can Bay Council Depot (Corner of Gympie Road and Coral Trout Drive), and Wes Mitchell Park.

Mosquito Safety

Council’s mosquito trapping and monitoring program is conducted fortnightly from November to May when insects are most active. To-date, council has captured higher than usual numbers of mosquitos, being approximately 11,000 mosquitos, across eight trap sites since November 2023.

The program is fundamental in understanding the prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases within the region with the saliva of the captured mosquitoes analysed in laboratories, allowing for the detection of viruses such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus, and Dengue Fever.

Results of the council’s most recent routine trapping returned two Ross River Virus detections in the Gympie region, the first for this summer season.

Coupled with the recent spike in mosquitos carrying Ross River Virus in Southeast Queensland, Gympie Regional Council is encouraging residents to remember helpful tips to reduce mosquito activity around their homes, for more information head to Council’s website.

CLEVERLY CAMOUFLAGED, the speckled warbler, with its melodious soft song, can be found on Australia’s east coast; usually in open eucalypt woodland.

Come breeding time, they build a nest out of dried grass, bark-shreds and moss, often lined with feathers and fur, for a clutch of 3 or 4 eggs.

They mainly dine on insects and seeds.

Rainbow Beach Learning Community

Term 1 has seen several new children join the Tuesday activities at the Rainbow Beach Learning Community and team leader Kerry has been delighted with the way they have quickly become part of the Learning Community family.

We are very excited to announce that the Family Guide to the Cooloola Coast is in the final stages of production and are hoping it will soon be available for distribution to local shops and accommodation venues.

This 8-page publication was compiled from ideas and suggestions put forward by our young people under the guidance of Tyla Elmer and includes maps courtesy of the Bay Bulletin, tips on which attractions and activities to visit in Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and K’gari, beautiful photos of the area, and local information that may be of interest to visiting families.

Photos featuring some of our young people at nearby attractions taken by local photographer and Learning Community parent Aimee Everson will take readers on a photographic ‘treasure hunt’ of the area (these are a couple of photos that will be used in the Family Guide).

The Family Guides are to be printed by the Rainbow Beach Community News which will be a wonderful gift to our local tourist industry.

Local authoress Elisa Seul recently paid us a visit to share about her new book ‘Rainbow Story’ and has offered to help any of our young people who are interested to write their own story which is an incredible opportunity.

We are looking forward to visits by Curtis from the Gympie Regional Library with his fabulous gadgets and Gabriella from Tin Can Bay QCWA who will be running another fun and informative cooking class.

As mentioned last month, Topsy our TurtleCare mascot has settled into her new home at the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village where she will continue to raise awareness of and provide funds for the valuable work of the volunteers as they take care of our local turtle population.

Due to the influx of visitors to the Holiday Village, the bins of recyclable bottles and cans need to be emptied every week and we would love it if some Rainbow Beach locals could help us out by going on a monthly roster to empty the bins on a Thursday and take them to the Sports Club car park where they will be collected.

The Learning Community is proud to host the annual Rainbow Beach Sandcastle Competition which will take place on Wednesday 3 April from 8.30am-12 noon on the beach north of the SLS tower.

Mark this date on your calendar, get a group of family members or friends together, start planning what you are going to build (BYO buckets, spades and decorations) and join us on the beach for a fabulous morning of fun and fresh air.

There are great prizes for winners of the four categories: most lifelike animal or fish: most amazing sandcastle or building: an open category where you can let your imagination run wild; and a People’s Choice Award where those on the beach during the morning will vote for their favourite entry.

Registration opens at 8.30am, with the entrants having two hours from 9-11am to create their masterpiece. The competition judge will be Arron from Sandshapers of Noosa and prizes awarded at 11.30am.

Arron will be on the beach from 8am working on his own amazing sand creation throughout the morning, thanks to Cooloola Coast Realty and Rainbow Beach Community News who are sponsoring the event.

Community Pantry

Our client list continues to grow after recent stories in local publications and we are now providing over 70 hampers at our two distribution centres, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and the Cooloola

Cove Vet’s Hall on Thursdays between 12.30pm & 1.30pm.

Our pantry days coincide with access to the local Emergency Relief Service which is provided by the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and at the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall from 1-3pm.

If you would like to know more about what is available through the Emergency Relief Service, please contact the lovely volunteers at the CIRS office on 5486 3355.

Suzanne Norman, a local qualified mental health counsellor, will be available on a voluntary basis 12.30-1.30pm on pantry days at the Vet’s Hall to help locals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, low self-esteem,

parenting challenges, postnatal depression, or relationship issues.

Our thanks go to the Rainbow Beach Sports Club who recently donated an enormous freezer that we were in desperate need of to enable us to store the Fareshare meals that form part of our hampers and are transported from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach each month by Gympie Refrigerated Transport.
