Rainbow X Adventure Festival

LOOK TO THE SKIES during the weekend of 19-21 April because there will be a colour kaleidoscope and skills showcase of skydiving spectacles at the Gold Rush Skydiving World Cup and Paragliding Championships coming to Rainbow Beach.

Over the three days of the Rainbow X Adventure Festival, there will be aerial manoeuvres for accuracy landing tested in the Gold Rush World Cup and the thrilling Ridge Race as paragliders use precision to navigate the coastal ridges.

Event spokesperson Kristan Fischer is “stoked to be sharing the spectacle with the Rainbow Beach Community. Gympie Regional Council has been

instrumental in helping to grow the festival and we hope to keep growing with each passing year!” It’s not just the competitors that can take to the sky over the weekend. SEQ Paragliding are offering tandem paragliding sessions so make sure to jump online and book to secure your place.

For more information on this adrenaline-fueled event, contact Kristan Fischer on 0409 741 149.

Local Councillor yet to be decided

AT THE TIME of publication, the outcome of the recent local election remained uncertain for our Division 1 representative. The competition between incumbent Jess Milne and Deputy Mayor Hilary Smerdon remains tightly contested, with Ms. Milne holding a slight 26-vote advantage.

This is not the sole divisional contest still pending, as Divisions 3, 4, 5, and 7 have yet to be officially decided.

However, there have been conclusive results for four candidates, with the mayor and Divisions 2, 6, and 8 being formally declared. Glen Hartwig has been re-elected as mayor with 54 percent of the initial vote, while Division 2 Councillor Dolly Jensen secures a second term with 65 percent of the ballots.

The council will welcome two new members this year: Warren McEwan clinched Division 6, formerly held by Mr. Smerdon prior to his move to Division 1, with 59 percent of the primary vote. In Division 8, Gordon Maudsley will succeed retiring councillor Bob Fredman, having garnered 61 percent support from Mary Valley voters.

BreastScreen Queensland mobile service coming to Tin Can Bay

T

HE BREASTSCREEN Queensland mobile service will be at Lions Park in Tin Can Bay in April offering free breast screening for women 40 years and over.

BreastScreen Queensland is making some changes in 2024 and will be offering more early and late appointments, including appointments up to 5.30pm on Wednesdays in Tin Can Bay.

“Women have told us that they need appointment times which fit in with busy lives.

“So, this year we will have more appointments between 3pm and 5.30pm for women who work, study, or are caring for others.” Health Promotion Officer, Gillian Duffy said.

Research shows that, for women aged 50 to 75 years, a breast screen

every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before a woman or her GP can notice any changes. A breast screen appointment takes less than 30 minutes and a doctor’s referral is not needed.

On 9 and 16 April, BreastScreen will be joined in Lions Park by My Health for Life, offering free health checks and lifestyle advice.

“We are pleased to be partnering with My Health for Life and hope everyone will take advantage of these health checks.” Ms Duffy said.

“While you don’t need to book for the health check, you do need to book ahead for a breast screen, to make sure you find an appointment at a time which suits you.”

BreastScreen Queensland mobile service will be in Tin Can Bay from 2 –19 April and at Gympie Bunnings from 23 – 27 April. There are permanent services at Goldfields Plaza, Gympie, Nambour Hospital and Noosaville.

To find your nearest service or to book an appointment call 13 20 50 or visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au

More information about My Health for Life can be found at myhealthforlife. com.au or call 13 74 75.

THE FACTS:

Women’s Day walk - thankfully not a washout

UR FOURTH annual International

OWomen’s Day Twilight walk on 8 March was better attended than expected, given the inclement weather. Participants wore IWD colours of purple, green, or white. Sixteen women gathered at the Norman Point Rotunda ready to set off at official sunset 6.11pm.

The theme was ‘Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress’. The campaign theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion’.

Groups of people U-turned around at different stages along the way,

depending upon their fitness levels. Jess Milne and her daughters, Bonnie and Jackie, joined us on the Tin Can Bay Boardwalk after Swim Club.

Again, huge thanks to our wonderful Tin Can Bay QCWA ladies, especially Gabriella and Linda, for your welcome fresh fruit platters and cool drink at the end of our walk.

We sang Happy Birthday to Linda Murphy and Jess Milne and thanked them for sharing their special day with us these past four years.

“It’s become a tradition”, laughed Linda. “Yes, it’s part of the ritual, now” agreed Jess.

Country Kitchens is a health promotion programme funded by Health and Wellbeing Queensland, run in partnership with the QCWA. Gabriella Field is our local Country Kitchens facilitator who has run health promotion activities in the Tin Can Bay School and Tin Can Bay Library. Gabriella set up her display, and had a gift bag for each of the Twilight Walkers. This bag contains a Welcome to QCWA Country Kitchens recipe, information about the 5 Key Messages, a healthy recipe, and ‘Health-a-size your recipe in 5 steps’ card.

Anzac Day in Rainbow Beach

ANZAC DAY is a National Day of Remembrance.

The 25th of April was when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 to set out and capture the Gallipoli Peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the Allied Navies. This campaign was a disaster with more than 11,000 casualties and 25,500 wounded. In 1916 the 25th of April was officially named Anzac Day.

To enable the Community to attend and pay their respects and honour the Service and Sacrifices of all Service Men and Women and their families the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting the following Ceremonies:

0515hrs – Dawn Service at the Cenotaph followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the Surf Club

New owners at the helm for Dolphin Ferry

HOLIDAYMAKERS ARE BEING invited to make the most of their visit to Rainbow Beach and explore more of what the Cooloola Coast has to offer.

Tin Can Bay Ferry’s new owners Andrew Angus and Heidi Wilson are urging tourists and locals alike to make the voyage to Tin Can Bay and feed a wild dolphin or two.

One of only three national destinations where you can feed wild dolphins without the fear of being fined, and Mr Angus says the Tin Can Bay experience is not only the most picturesque (in his opinion) it is certainly the most affordable.

“The ferry has offered the dolphin feeding experience for quite some time now, but when Heidi and I took the helm at Tin Can Bay Ferry, we realised what a unique opportunity we have here to offer visitors and even locals,” he said.

“We have one of only three approved wild dolphin feeding operations right here on the

Cooloola Coast courtesy of Barnacles Dolphin Centre.

“The others being Moreton Bay’s Tangalooma Resort, which requires an accommodation booking and longer ferry ride to visit, and more than 5,000km away is the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Western Australia.”

For just $70 an adult, and $40 for children, passengers can hop aboard the Tin Can Bay Ferry at Carlo Point, Rainbow Beach, and take a 30-minute voyage to Tin Can Bay’s Barnacles Dolphin Centre.

Feeding begins at about 7am and fish is included in the price. The ferry then departs Tin Can Bay at about 9am for the 30-minute journey back to Rainbow Beach.

Mr Angus said it is not only a memorable experience for kids and adults alike, the photo opportunities will not disappoint.

Cruise your way to Tin Can Bay aboard a dolphin ferry ride.

For those who prefer a later start to the day, the ferry operates Sunset Cruises, lunch, and dinner cruises departing from Tin Can Bay and can cater for special occasions.

To enquire or book, phone 0428 838 836 or email admin@tincanbayferry.com. For more information visit www.dolphinferrycruises.com.au

CoolaFlix Free Film Night

L

AST MONTH, the CoolaFlix free film was moved from a very rainy market night to the Friday Community Catch-up on Good Friday (March 29). The film chosen was Rise of The Guardians, a 2021 animated feature film with a mix of fantasy and adventure.

CoolaFlix returns to market nights again from Saturday 13 April with TurtleCare being the host group. The CoolaFlix film will be the hilarious family animation The Secret Life of Pets (G).

Doors open at 5.30pm with the film screening at 7pm. Food and refreshments are available, with all proceeds going to the TurtleCare group. Free entry to this movie is made possible by a grant from Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, and powered by volunteers.

Computer Donation

THANKS TO GYMPIE Regional Council’s Community Grants program, we have a refurbished desktop computer for our reception desk. The Donated Computers grant was open to all local community groups and much appreciated.

This addition allows the laptop to be used by volunteers doing specific tasks for projects, posters, social media, or administration documents. We still have two laptops for public internet access.

Volunteer Jenny Brown took the opportunity to rearrange the CIRS office and it looks great and works so much better. Come in and see for yourself.

Annual General Meeting

OUR ANNUAL General Meeting will be held in the hall on Wednesday 15 May from 5pm to 7pm.

All current committee members will be stepping down and a new committee appointed. We believe two years is long enough so we encourage financial members to consider nominating for the roles of President, Treasurer and Secretary.

There will be more information on what these roles entail next edition and via our member email, but we wanted residents to know so that they will

consider serving their community in our cohesive team of friendly and committed volunteers.

We are not leaving CIRS, just giving someone else a go, so we will be there to support the new management team, but will just volunteer in other ways.

So what do you say? Are you ready for the challenge? Come in and say hello, check out what we do and decide for yourself (and make sure you are a financial member before the AGM!).

ESPITE THE RAIN, our March markets were still well-attended. Local muso Phill Skinner kept everyone entertained while our Barbie Boys kept them well-fed on Rainbow Beach Meats sausages.

For the comfort eaters there was Martine’s wicked vanilla slice and quiche. There were Gluten-Free Donuts for the special dieters, and stuffed olives and local honey for the gourmets.

Fresh fruit and veg, every kind of coffee from The Coffee Cart and natural remedies all there for a healthy living bonanza. Winner of the $100 board was one very happy regular patron John Seul.

CIRS sold a lot of secondhand books so it seems that lots of people were saving for just such a rainy day. Next markets are Saturday 13 April from 8am to 12noon inside and outside Rainbow Beach Community Hall. Be there or be square.

Rainbow Beach School P&C News

WHAT AN AMAZING start to OSHC! Lina and Marylou have been busy behind the scenes planning activities for our OSHC children and also for the upcoming school holidays.

The kids have so far been kept busy with cooking, arts and crafts and nature expeditions. During the school holidays we will be providing vacation care on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week from 8am4pm. At time of writing there are still plenty of vacancies and we welcome all school aged children to attend the service.

To enrol your child you can contact us directly on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@gmail.com. Alternatively you can enrol online, the link is on our P&C Facebook page.

Our regular hours of operation are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 2.30pm - 5.30pm with the plan to extend these hours as required. We are grateful for the support of local families in the lead up to the opening and we are pleased to have many families already enrolled and utilising this service.

Recently the 4/5/6 students attended a school camp to Double Island Point. The camp started with a 12km hike from Carlo Sandblow and followed the bush track all the way to Double Island Point.

The students and staff all thoroughly enjoyed the walk. The

walk was wrapped up with a swim in the lagoon before setting off to set up camp at Freshwater. The enthusiasm, determination and teamwork that the children displayed was amazing.

For some, this was their first time to Double Island Point and what better way to do it than with their school mates. With all tents successfully set up, they enjoyed an afternoon of free play followed by BBQ dinner and some more games.

Whilst some campers ended up a little wet after the 2am downpour, it was all smiles and excitement for the adventures ahead. After breakfast we were picked up by Epic Ocean Adventures and spent the morning learning to surf and kayak.

We would like to send a big thank you to the team at Epic Ocean Adventures as well as the staff and parent volunteers that made this camp possible. It really is a wonderful way for our children to experience their own backyard.

In other news, we have reached the end of our first term of school. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun, and this term proved to go very quickly.

Students have been very busy with all of their learning and the teachers are very impressed with their efforts so far.

Continued next page

In addition to learning and the first school camp of the year, the term was also busy with various excursions for our school leaders and a full school excursion to Australia Zoo which supported the science units about animal lifecycles across all classes.

We would like to wish all of our families a happy and safe Easter holidays and we look forward to seeing you all back in term 2.

If you would like to keep up to date with our P&C news, you can visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ PandCRainbowBeach.

Right: Our Year 4/5/6 students had a cracking time on camp.

APRIL IS GOING to be a busy month for the Tin Can Bay Quilters as preparations are under way for our Friendship Day on 20 April where there will be quilts on show and vendors with their goodies.

Entrance is by invitation but if anyone would like to get a group together by all means contact our President Robyn Salmon on 0427 356 028.

Our photos this month are from Michaela Keen who has just joined our group. I think as a beginner she definitely has done a wonderful job and with her obvious flair will go on to greater projects. Well done and welcome Michaela.

A reminder that the last Tuesday of every month we will be holding a beginners class, where you can learn the quilting basics.

The Tin Can Bay Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am to 12 noon at the Community Hall Complex, Amity Place, Tin Can Bay. New members and visitors are most welcome.

AST MONTH’S AGM witnessed a changeover with Paul Boulton stepping aside and Bryan Phillips taking over as President of the Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS).

Paul has given TCBCAMS his wholehearted support and service over the last nine years since its initial inception to where it stands now. He has worn many hats over this time as treasurer, president, fundraiser, grants officer, community liaison officer, friend, colleague, mentor, bbq master etc.

We couldn’t have done it without him and, thankfully, he will still be with us – just in a less visible role.

Bryan will now be leading the charge with plans for a further building being researched to

accommodate pottery and other activities. Watch this space for updates…

‘The Shed’ will be participating this year in the Gympie Region Studio Trails being held on 6 and 7 July when Jewellery, Mosaic and Macrame classes/demonstrations will be running. As well, Keith’s ‘Silky Oak’ project will be on display and our shop will be open for business also.

Potentially, there’s something for everyone at ‘The Shed’ and we’re open 9am-noon every weekday.

Men Only days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Easy access and parking are available onsite – just look for the sign at the bottom left of the Community Complex’s carpark in Amity Place, Tin Can Bay.

Phone enquiries should be directed to our wonderful Secretary – Raewyn Oliver on 0412 995 512.

JOIN US AT THE KIA ORA HALL

Art Group mix things up

COOLOOLA COAST Art Group enjoyed added highlights to their regular artistic activities last month, from colour charts to a get-together with the Creative Hikers group.

Each fortnight, weather permitting, the group holds a plein-air outing and in March were joined by the Creative Hikers Group at Crab Creek, Tin Can Bay. Some members did walking and drawing while others did one or the other.

A morning tea was shared under the picnic shelter with interesting conversations, a show and tell of artwork, and a promise to do it again.

The Tuesday group explored colour and paint by making their own colour charts under the guidance of

Kerri Southern. These were done in watercolour, so it is a great way to learn about using the medium as well which colours mix or glaze well.

On the alternate Mondays to pleinair, life drawing was held at Tuncunba Hall, Tin Can Bay.

Cooloola Coast Art Group is inviting all artists from the area to participate in their biennial art show from 4-7 July at the RSL Hall, Tin Can Bay. For information regarding any of these events contact Kerri on 0438 803 990 or send an email to cooloolacoastartgroup@gmail.com

The group’s Instagram site is @ cooloolacoastartgroup where you can see photos of the various activities.

Parkrun Rainbow in honour of Dorothy

BACK IN FEBRUARY the Wes Mitchell Park parkrun ran an article that highlighted the inspiration that regular walker Dorothy brought to the event as she would complete the 5km course using her wheelie walker proving that if there is a will, there is a way.

It is with great sadness to all that Dorothy passed away in March. The Wes Mitchell Park parkrun family will miss her determination and enthusiasm plus her bright personality that brought such joy.

At the parkrun on the 6 April 2024 there will be an honour to Dorothy by running the event in her memory so please wear something crazy and bright as Dorothy loved colour.

Wes Mitchell Park parkrun is held every Saturday morning from Wes Mitchell Park (opposite the library) in Tin Can Bay with a briefing from 6.45am for a 7am sharp start. Register for free on the parkrun website for your barcode to be used to keep track of your time. Volunteers are always welcome to keep this free event running so put your name down, no experience necessary!

ANZAC Day in Tin Can Bay

ANZAC DAY is one of the major commemorative events for the Tin Can Bay RSL. The ANZAC Day programme will commence on 25 April with the Dawn Service behind the RSL hall at 5.30am, followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at 6.30am.

The Anzac Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony will commence at 8.30am at Anzac Memorial Park. The catafalque party for the day is being supplied by Number 82 Wing from RAAF Base, Amberley.

Following the services, all are welcome to return to the Tin Can Bay RSL for refreshments. The whole community is invited so please come along and make Anzac Day 2024 a day to remember.

The day will be all the more special for the Tin Can Bay RSL as we share our recently enclosed rear verandah with the community. Any new works are a big event for small, unique clubs such as ours and we are proud to show off our renovations.

Thanks go to the Queensland

Government’s Gambling Community Benefits Fund for the grant to fund the project and to GJ Glass from Gympie for undertaking the works. GJ Glass were easy to deal with and completed the job as budgeted, on time, and to an exceptional standard of work.

Of course, no new works are possible without the support of our volunteers who submitted the grant application, moved existing furniture, and prepared the verandah ready for project implementation. To these volunteers – thank you for your service!

March Madness for Walkers!

WHAT A BUSY month is March! Tina Scullion’s 1,300th walk achievement, International Women’s Day Twilight Walk, Saint Patrick’s Day, then Easter! Lots of photo opportunities.

Welcome to our two new members, Christine and Elspeth. We hope you are enjoying your exercise and socialising with Heart Foundation Walkers.

Congratulations Tina on your many Heart Foundation Walkers milestones, “Woop woop!” Our Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ Walk Organiser, Mrs Judy Beaton, has wheeled 200 walks, so will be receiving your second badge to pin on your cap. Splendid, what a great effort, so inspirational.

Yvonne’s award and first badge for your first 100 walks is in the mail. Larraine G has wheeled 50 walks, well done. Debbie and Julie have reached the first goal of 25 walks. Congratulations to you all for your achievements.

Considering the inclement weather on8 March, our International Women’s Day Twilight Walk was well attended with nineteen people participating. Again, huge thanks to our wonderful Tin Can Bay Qld Country Women’s Association ladies, especially Gabriella and Linda, for your welcome fruit platters and cool drink.

Saint Patrick’s Day lent us the excuse to dress

in green, and/or orange. CCWWalkers were resplendent as we wandered the streets, getting lots of waves from observers. We were joined at coffee by a leprechaun and the fluttering Irish flag. Both the early and later groups greeted Park Runners and others along the Tin Can Bay Foreshore with “Happy St Patrick’s Day”. A great excuse for dressing up, or at least, a change from our red!

On Wednesdays and Saturdays the ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ early group departs from the Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6.30am with Denise and Kate, the later group at 7am with Kristine and myself.

Flipping good fun for Probus

CONTINUING ON from attending several events, lunches, and morning teas in January and early February we have indulged in even more Fun, Friendship and Fellowship this past month.

Our February Coffee and Chat morning was held at Flippers (site of the former Black Cockatoo Restaurant). This was our first time at Flippers and those attending were very happy with the service and the food. This type of event provides the opportunity to chat and get to know our fellow members better.

In March we held our monthly general meeting, followed by the Annual General Meeting, when members voted for a new committee to run the club for the ensuing year. Several current committee members were re-elected and we have some new faces with new ideas as well.

Katrina van den Brenk has been re-elected President as she has done great job for the past twelve months, Cherryl Mossman is our Vice-President, Barbara McKenzie our Treasurer, and Kaye Olson our Secretary. There are lots of ideas emerging for regular events and new activities which will be of interest, and benefit, to all members.

At time of writing our Changeover

Lunch was due to be held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club in late March when the new committee will be inducted. It is also a celebration of our 15th Birthday and a special 15-year Certificate from Probus South Pacific Limited will be presented by former Rotary District Probus Chairman, Norm Winn, from Maryborough.

As part of his duties at the time was the establishment of new Probus Clubs and he visited the Bay several times to gather expressions of interest which led to the formal establishment of the Club in February 2009.

Already some big events are planned in the Wide Bay – a Presidents and Past Presidents Lunch in August at Bundaberg, and the Friendship Day and Concert in Hervey Bay on 1 October which is Probus Day. These events will be open to all Probus Club members in the Wide Bay and it is a great opportunity to meet up with old Probian friends and make some new ones.

The team were great to work with in helping to create an ad that suited our branding and the key message we wanted to convey. Their team turned around artwork really fast and gave us pricing options based on a variety of marketing plans. Congratulations Tina on 1,300 Walks!

CONGRATULATIONS to Tina Scullion on achieving 1,300 officially recorded walks with Heart Foundation Walking on 2 March 2024.

“I first became a member of a Heart Foundation Walking Group in May 2005. Prior to this the group was called ‘Just Walk I’, and was an initiative of The Caloundra City Council. Our initial group in Currimundi went from strength to strength, and I was sad to move on in June 2022,” said Tina.

“However, it was easy to keep the momentum up; when I joined ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ I had already achieved the milestone of 1,000+ walks, and am proud to say that has now risen to 1,300 registered walks – over 6,000 kilometres by my calculations.”

Soon after arriving on the Cooloola Coast Tina had her membership and 1,100 walks transferred from the Currimundi group where she was the Walk Organiser.

The first Just Walk It group stepped out in Queensland in 1995 and then spread to the other states. Once it was a truly national program in 2007, it became Heart Foundation Walking.

The program has gone from strength to strength, with a boost in Federal government funding in 2017 and over 40,000 members across the country walking with us. (https://walking. heartfoundation.org.au/whats-on/blog/a-walkback-in-time)

Tina explains, “The obvious advantage of these

groups is exercise, but overall this is a small part of what you gain by being part of this amazing ‘family’ network.

“The friendships (in my case, some spanning a couple of decades now), moral support, caring, encouragement, camaraderie, and inclusiveness are equally as important as the exercise.

“I would recommend Heart Foundation Walking groups to anyone starting on their fitness journey, or just new to an area wanting to build up a network of friends and like-minded people.”

Well done, Tina, you are inspirational!

The race is on for Dragons

Manly Regatta:

Cooloola Dragon Boat Club competed in the Manly Regatta at Lake Kawana on 3 March. This was their first regatta for the 2024 competition year.

The Cooloola Dragons joined forces with the Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Mavericks club. The two clubs participated as the ‘Coolavericks’ in the 2km race and put in excellent performances despite never having paddled as a team before.

In all thirteen clubs competed in the 2k race and the ‘Coolavericks’ did themselves proud.

This regatta was also notable for the fact that the Cooloola Club field had no less than six people who are relatively new to paddling and who had never competed in a regatta before. Well done to the ‘newbies’: Jimmy, Kay, Robyn, Sharne, Shelley, and Sirpa!!!

The Cooloola Ladies 10s team also performed very well but, unfortunately, did not make the finals.

State Titles:

At the time of writing, the Cooloola Dragons are in full training for the State Titles due to be held in midMarch. Judging by recent training and competition performances, we can expect our local team to do very well in the State Titles; good luck to the team and see next month’s issue for the results.

Wide Bay Series:

Following on from the State Titles, the relevant teams will begin competition for the Wide Bay Series. The Wide Bay series kicks off with the

first regatta in Bundaberg in May. This event is followed by Hervey Bay’s regatta and then the Cooloola Club’s regatta at Tin Can Bay over the first weekend of July.

Spectators are more than welcome to come down to the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club and see the teams participate. Not only are the paddlers out in force from around our region but there are a number of side events that are worth taking in.

The Wide Bay Series concludes in August with the Town of 1770’s regatta. Once again, we wish all members of the Cooloola Club all the very best of luck in the upcoming series.

Don’t forget the Dragon’s Lair Café

for super brekkies and snacks on the third Saturday of every month coinciding with the Tin Can Bay Markets. We hope to see you there. Finally, quite a few people are getting into paddling for the first time and enjoying the friendship, training, and competition. Please give some thought to coming down for a try. It will not cost you a cent and you will most probably find that it is an immensely enjoyable and satisfying experience. Please contact Head Coach Sandra Wooster on 0402 352 756 who

happy to give you details.

State Air Rifle Championships

On the weekend of 22-24 March, 22 competitors battled rain, mud and a little wind in the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) Air Rifle State Championships at the Tin Can Bay SSAA Range, with member for Gympie Tony Perrett MP formally opening the event on the Saturday morning.

Members travelled from over Queensland, including as far as Townsville, for matches in 10m precision scoped air rifle, air rifle field target, and air rifle silhouette. The competition attracted both a national champion and runner up plus international shooters, with the youngest entrant being just 14 years old and had section gradings covering from C grade to Masters with also Veterans (over 60 years).

The was also a ‘Blowy Busters’ match which involves hitting blowflysized targets with scoring on where the air pellet hits the fly creating some fierce competition, with many flies busted but also some score sheets that had flies that got to live another day in what was considered ‘kind conservation competitors’ because many were missed.

There were numerous awards presented on the Sunday with the most notable being Chris Dale for overall winner of the Championship and young Shaylen Stone who has

This is believed to be a first for a female, which in her words means she “now has to go up against the big boys” but Shaylen has her sights set on improving so they better watch out!

Veteran shooter Gordon MacRae also took out a few medals and only just took out the informal Blowy Buster competition by a few high scoring head shots.

The SSAA Air Rifle National Championships will be held at Tin Can Bay later in the year. A big thank you to the catering crew for the weekend of Francis, Kerryn, and Jess.

The SSAA Tin Can Bay Range holds air rifle shoots every 2nd Saturday and 4th Sunday of the month.

The Cooloola Cup regatta will be held on 27 and 28 April, the weekend before the Bay to Bay, and is open to all monohulls, multihulls and trailer-sailers. The Yacht Club bar and bistro will be open on the Saturday night.

The 43rd Bay to Bay Regatta is on 3 and 4 May and is a spectacular sight, especially if there is a spinnaker start, on the Tin Can Bay waters.

Pre- race celebrations start on the Friday night at the Yacht Club with food and drinks and the live band Cool Lula playing from 6-9pm. The Yacht Club is open to all competitors, members and visitors.

Tin Can Bay

G’DAY ALl, April is upon us and with the days and nights cooling down hopefully fairer weather will follow, fingers crossed. The poor weather periods haven’t stopped our club stalwarts from wetting a line and this has paid off with some legitimate ‘donkeys’ being landed.

Club members Malcolm and Noela Kay ventured out over the bar with some lovely fish coming over the side including some respectable Cod, a cracker 70cm Gold Band Snapper and Noela even produced a juvenile Red Emperor.

On another outing Derek Andrews and Malcolm Kay brought home some lovely 45cm Nannygai, Snapper, and Sweetlip. On yet another trip, Derek Andrews and John Blackman ventured further up the Straits and realised some very nice Cod and Grassy Sweet lip.

Member Chris Rippon has been at it again schooling us all on just how to bring in some quality fish. His haul over a few trips included, but was not limited to, a 78cm Flathead and then a cracker Golden Trevally. A standout performance you will agree.

Not to rest Chris then guided his mate John Mallard to a whopping

105cm Barramundi, now that’s impressive – well done John. All these fish tagged and released to fight another day.

The fishing club’s last two-day competition was won by Malcolm Kay with two Mangrove Jack 43cm and 42cm and two Whiting 30cm and 33 cm. Second was Ron Cox with a 47cm Mangrove Jack and two Flathead 62cm and 68cm, all on lures – well done to all.

Largest fish for the month was won by Chris Rippon with his 98cm Barramundi. Our freshwater master Marquis Chapman has been amongst the Australian Bass again

with a standout 45cm specimen amongst others, well done Marquis.

Upcoming events include a trip to the Mary River targeting Threadfin Salmon and Barramundi. 13-14 April will be the clubs next two-day fishing competition, also later in April there will be a four day trip to Baffle Creek targeting Mangrove Jack and Grunter etc.

Later in the month we are planning another evening workshop on ‘Knowing your Baitcasters’ and ‘Knot Tying’. A beach fishing day down to Teewah Beach held in late March will be reported on next issue. Of course all these events are subject to weather conditions.

Our club, like any other club relies on members to assist with fundraising and working bees etc. February/March were busy months

with three successful Sausage Sizzle money raisers and a very well attended working bee led by John Blackman at the club house, to perform the necessary maintenance on the gardens. These were all very successful and many thanks to all who made this possible.

The social side of the club was a little quiet lately however morning teas and evening meals at various local venues are planned for April. Contact the secretary for further information on these outings. Here’s hoping for some good weather so we all can get out and enjoy this wonderful region.

For further information on the club or any of the above events, contact 0437 242 171 or at tcbfishingclub@ bigpond.com. Till next time, tight lines.

Building a Resilient Region Road Works Map

AS A RESULT of three flood events in 2022, the Gympie region received significant damage to the majority of our road network. Many roads sustained varying levels of damage from minor to significant. The early damage estimate places the combined cost to council between $90 - $100 million over the three floods.

Where possible, Council is working with State and Federal governments to access funds through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement (DRFA) which is administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority. Council is in the process of rolling out ‘construction packages’* on a priority basis to fix the damages.

There is an interactive information and mapping page on Council’s website that has all the upcoming works listed including the estimated duration. The information on this page is updated weekly except for the progress map which is live.

Visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/roadnetwork under Major Projects, Building

a Resilient Region.

*A construction package is a number of roads that have been identified as flood damaged and are bundled together based on location. The damages along these roads are fully funded by the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), a joint Commonwealth and State government funding source, and will be carried out by external contractors.

This year’s challenge was made possible through the collaborative efforts of UniSC and the University of Newcastle, underscoring the importance of partnerships in fostering educational opportunities and nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Chappy CHAT

TERM 1 HAS simply flown by with some standout activities enjoyed by the young people of the Rainbow Beach Learning Community, including a walking race around Rainbow Beach village where three teams had to follow directions and answer questions about places along the way.

The first two teams were back in record time, however didn’t get all the answers correct so the last team to arrive were the most thorough and ended up being the winners.

Another enjoyable activity was a market morning where children brought along toys, books, and other items they no longer wanted. They were given an amount of fake money and a shopping list to help them decide what they wanted to buy and everyone went home feeling very happy with a bag full of ‘new’ toys and gifts for family members.

We also had a visit from local art tutor Vicky Miles who gave the children a wonderful opportunity to create a sunset silhouette – see the attached photo of the finished result. Kerry, who leads the Tuesday group, has been focusing on reading ‘The Secret Garden,’ a beautiful book about a young orphan girl who goes to live with her uncle in Yorkshire when her parents die of a cholera epidemic in India. This book is a classic and has so much to teach about what is important in life and the value of friendship with lots of creative activities flowing from the book.

Preparations for the annual Rainbow Beach Sandcastle Competition are well under way with great prizes donated by local businesses including the Rainbow Beach Post Office, Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf, Rainbow Beach Pizzas, IGA, Brooke’s Coffee Cart, Soul Food, Rainbow Beach Meats, and copies of ‘A Rainbow Story’ by author Elisa Seul. The competition is on Wednesday 3 April from 8.30am-12noon on the beach north of the SLS tower with a sausage sizzle and cold drinks for sale. It will be a great time so get a group of family members or friends

Beach Bakery, plus single or familysized frozen meals.

together, start planning what you are going to build (BYO buckets, spades and decorations) and join us for a fabulous morning of fun and fresh air.

Four categories are: most lifelike animal or fish; most amazing sandcastle or building; an open category where you can let your imagination run wild; and a People’s Choice Award where those on the beach will vote for their favourite. The team that wins the People’s Choice Award will receive a voucher for a night’s accommodation in a family unit at the Rainbow Sands Resort.

Registration opens at 8.30am, with the entrants having two hours from 9-11am to create their masterpiece. Judge will be Arron from Sandshapers of Noosa with prizes awarded at 11.30am. Arron will be on the beach from 8am working on his own amazing sand creation, thanks to Cooloola Coast Realty, Rainbow Beach Realty, Gympie Today and Rainbow Beach Community News who are sponsoring the event.

Topsy our TurtleCare mascot is doing a great job reminding visitors to the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village how recycling their bottles and cans is raising awareness of the valuable work of the TurtleCare volunteers as they take care of our turtle population.

We are still needing help to empty the bins of bottles and cans every week and we would love it if some locals could help by going on a monthly roster on a Thursday and take them to the Sports Club where they will be collected. If you can help, please contact team leader, Kerry Sleath on 0432 373 601.
