The sky was not the limit for Rainbow
X Adventure Festival! T
HE RECENT Rainbow X Adventure Festival attracted both national and international champion skydivers to Rainbow Beach to compete in the Goldrush World Cup, as well as paragliders that raced along the ridges of Teewah Beach. Three categories had competitors jumping for a place on the podium testing accuracy landings in the precision, sports, and basic events. The prestige skydiving event was the Precision event that involved participants aiming for a $2 coinsized target on the landing space for a top score of 0. For each centimetre out from this mark, points increased by 1 to a total of 16. The scores are taken from the first point of contact on the landing zone, with special shoes worn by the competitors that have a small protrusion on the heel to ensure a targeted touch point. The winner had a score of 2 over 6 jumps which is an incredible effort. The Sports category involved landing standing up closest to the centre cross of a 30m diameter circle while navigating strict entry speeds using a ‘fast’ parachute. The Basic category has the same landing zone configuration as the Sports event however the competitors use a larger ‘slow’ parachute and attract those that enjoy base jumping style parachuting.
For the paragliding event all competitors navigated the same 20km stretch of coastline on Teewah Beach to race the clock to see who could do it in the shortest time. Although the weather pulled the festival short by a day, there were enough jumps made to determine place getters who were announced at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club on Saturday 20 April at the festival presentation ceremony.
Medal winners, competitors, and others involved with the event gathered at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club after the event. Pictured are the the SEQ Paragliding team and Ridge Race medal winners.

Cup of tea anyone?
M
OTHER’S DAY is a wonderful time to treat our mums and mother figures with a refreshing cup of tea. Yorkshire Tea’s leading tea expert and senior buyer Suzy Garraghan shares her top tips on a proper brew: 1. Treat your water kindly – Run the tap a little so the water’s nicely aerated, and only boil it once to keep the oxygen level up. Oxygen in water helps flavour. 2. Mug or tea pot? – If you’ve chosen a mug, pop a tea bag in, pour the hot water over and stir briefly. If you’d rather a teapot for some extra brew, make sure you keep everything toasty. Tea likes hot water, but a chilly teapot cools things down. So swirl a little boiling water around the empty pot first. 3. Patience – Tea needs time to unlock all its flavour, so give it four to five minutes to do its thing.
4. Milk it – If you’re brewing tea in a mug, it’s better to add the milk last, after it’s brewed. If you’re brewing in a teapot, it’s completely up to you. Ultimately, it’s what’s inside (the bag) that counts!

‘Sewing’ the seeds of friendship
O
N 20 APRIL, hundreds of attendees from quilting clubs in Queensland descended on the Cooloola Coast Community Complex for a celebration of mateship over the craft of quilting. More than just sewing squares
together, quilting is a mosaic of colour combinations intertwined by shape and texture threaded by stitching techniques, with each piece weaving a story in itself. Presentations, stalls, raffles, and

Sound of Teen Spirit Revival
B
ACK IN 2016, a teenage Braden Gray wanted to gain onstage experience so he approached YAP (Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project) to hold a concert. The Sound of Teen Spirit was created which ran from 2016 to 2019 until the pandemic halted live music in 2020. After a few years break, the Sound of Teen Spirit music concert is making a comeback with a revival concert on Saturday 25 May 2024 at the Cooloola Coast Community Complex. Stemming from the original intent, the concert is an opportunity for youth to gain confidence by having a go onstage in a safe and encouraging
environment. This year it is open to youth of any age who have a performance or act that incorporates sound; family/friend adults can also perform together with the youth if they want. Sing, play an instrument, read poetry or jokes, recite a speech, or get creative with something totally original. YAP volunteers are here to assist to make ideas happen so contact 0411 218 254 to register an act or idea. There is practice space available if needed for the lead up and there will be plenty of time before the show to get familiar with the stage on
Saturday morning. Don’t be shy, be daring! The concert starts at 2pmand is FREE, so come along to support the kids. BYO food and drinks (tea, coffee and cordial supplied) for a fun afternoon of family connection in a supportive environment and to further YAP’s mission of encouraging, supporting and empowering the next generation. This event is drug and alcohol free and all youth under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. This project received funding assistance from the Gympie Regional Council Community Grants Program 2022/2023.

Community Centre Update May 2024
F
OR THE BENEFIT of residents new to the Cooloola Coast, we want to share some information about our organisation at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre – who we are, where we are and what we do. Community Information & Resource Service Association Inc (CIRS) was established in 1999 by a group of locals trying to get some health support and community services in our village. We currently have 165 members and the membership fee remains at the original $5 per year, due 1 January each year. CIRS inhabits the small offices attached to the Rainbow Beach Community Hall, alongside the Library, in the main street of Rainbow Beach. You will find us open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4pm. We are run 100% by volunteers so we can always find a worthwhile use for your time - no matter how many or few hours you can give – if you would like to get involved in your community. Please read through our activities to get an idea of what you might like to do.
Fiona Hawthorne PRESIDENT
History C
IRS WAS INCORPORATED in 2000 and entered into an agreement between Cooloola Shire Council (now Gympie Regional Council) who paid for the rented premises (now part of the hardware store), Lifeline Community Care QLD who employed the part-time coordinator, Tin Can Bay Resource and Referral Assoc. Inc who shared the coordinator, and the (then) Dept of Communities in an ex-officio role. Called the Cooloola Coast Community Partnership Program, this two year agreement was
renewed again twice (6 years in total) and nominated for the Premier’s Excellence Award. We attracted much-needed outreach services such as community legal services, counselling, tax help, mental health, and veteran support. Needs assessments built the case for a purpose built community centre and we repeatedly approached the State Government for funding as a Neighbourhood Centre. The hall was built in 2012 and CIRS moved into the offices there
to manage the hall bookings and maintenance. In the last two years, we have renewed our efforts to become a funded Neighbourhood Centre in line with the increased community activities that we are now engaged in. The good news is that we are one of ten unfunded centres included in Neighbourhood Centres QLD’s requests to the State Budget. Fingers crossed that CIRS finally receives financial support for the strong community role we have played over the past 25 years.
volunteer activities Markets Markets are held the second Saturday of every month from 7am to 12pm (summer months) and from 8am to 1pm (May, June, July, August). Footprints Foot Clinic Visit
S
UNSHINE COAST Health Services now have a mobile foot clinic travelling to the Cooloola Coast. Their first visit on 22 April was well attended, and nurse Jason said they will be back on a regular basis, with dates yet to be confirmed. Foot-screening can detect nerve damage and blood flow issues before they become a major problem, and the service hopes to encourage residents to look after their feet and seek preventative treatments early. No booking is required. Dates for their next visit will be promoted on our Facebook page and posted on our noticeboard.

ELCOME BACK to Term 2! It’s great to see the students after their well-deserved break. The children were excited to share their holiday stories and it seems they were thoroughly enjoyed with many adventures and quality family time. Term 1 finished with lots of fun for the students. Throughout the term, students were learning about animal lifecycles, habitats, and adaptations so it was only fitting to take the entire school to Australia Zoo! It was a fantastic day and a first trip to Australia Zoo for many of our students. Throughout the day we encountered koalas to pat, kangaroos to feed, blue tongue lizards to poke and even a snake to touch. The students and staff all learned about animal behaviours, their survival techniques and ways to help ensure animals are cared for so they can live long healthy lives. The last day of term finished with the annual Easter Bonnet Parade and Easter Egg Hunt. We were very impressed by the effort put into the Easter Hats and would like to send a big thank you to Rainbow Beach IGA for donating the major prizes.
OSHC OSHC was a great success throughout the holidays. Children and teachers had a wonderful time during the Easter holidays with a wide variety of activities. The most popular being the Barefoot Bowls which was provided by the Rainbow Beach Sports Club. Ruth from Ocean Breeze Seafood also came in and provided cooking lessons for Nasi Goreng and Special Spicy Pancakes. The Water Slide was also a popular activity along with Tie Dying and Clay Pottery. Thank you to Rainbow Beach Sports Club and Ruth from Ocean Breeze Seafoods for adding value to our Holiday Program. We really do provide a nurturing stimulating environment where all children feel a sense of Belonging Being and Becoming. OSHC regular hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 2.30pm – 5.30pm during the school term and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8am – 4pm during the school holidays.

A Message from the Principal, Mr Steve Bennett Cross Country In week 1, we had the first of our 2024 sporting competitions with our Cross Country. It was fantastic to see so many of our students showing their best sportsmanship and some really amazing individual efforts. For the first time in a number of years K’Gari House won the day with a total of 114 points. Cooloola are to be congratulated with 102 Points. We are very proud of the way our students conducted themselves. Several students ran competitive times and will be nominated to participate in the Gympie District Trials at One Mile Ovals.

I
T’S ANZAC DAY and I’m the MC for the day. Next up on my detailed run sheet is the national anthems for New Zealand and Australia. I look across at Steph and she nods her head and murmurs “go for it,” so I press the play button on our music system. The music starts and Steph starts singing the first verse of the New Zealand national anthem in Māori, and I can see the crowd captivated by the music and Steph’s rendition of the anthem. “Excellent,” I think to myself and smile – she’s doing a great job!
Stephanie Jones joined the Australian Army in 1990 as a truck driver with the Army Reserve. After a year she decided to join the regular army and went to Kapooka for her recruit course with its inherent challenges including celebrating Christmas Day on duty.
Steph’s first posting was to the Army School of Music in Melbourne and then to Victoria Barracks in Sydney joining the Australian Army Band Corps. She was posted to Wagga Wagga, Townsville, and then to Canberra for a busy 4 years playing a mix of drums, flute, and the piccolo with the various Army bands.
Year 3 Rugby League Gala Day Week 1 also saw some of our Year 3 students attend the Rugby League Gala Day which was facilitated by the Broncos Development Officer, Mr. Darren Burns and was held at Albert Park, Gympie. The students had a fantastic day and learnt many skills. With 4 games played on the day, our students won 2 and drew 1. For a team of boys whom many had never played before, they should be very proud of themselves, they put in a fantastic effort and had a lot of fun in the process.
Steph was discharged from the Australian Army in 2005, and was awarded her 15-year, long service medal. The highlights of her time in the army included her time in Canberra supporting the Australian Defence Force Academy and Duntroon, the Changing of the Guard parade at Buckingham Palace, and the 1999 Christmas Concert for troops in East Timor. I asked Steph what singing the national anthems on Anzac Day meant to her. She said, ‘It’s an honour and a privilege to sing on Anzac Day. My grandfather was in the New Zealand army and my uncle was a prisoner of war in World War 2.
“Being involved in Anzac Day helps tie it all together in my mind. I am part Māori, so singing the first verse of New Zealand’s national anthem in the Māori language is very important to me.’
If you would like to keep up to date with our P&C news, you can visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ PandCRainbowBeach.
Well, you did a great job Steph. Thank you for your service!

Our annual Changeover Lunch held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club in late March was a great success and was enjoyed by our members as well as special guests, Norm Winn and Wendy Neilson from Maryborough, and representatives from neighbouring Probus Clubs – Maryborough Combined, Gympie, and Gympie Widgee. Norm is the former Rotary District Probus Chairman and Maryborough Combined Probus Club member who instigated the establishment of the club which held its first meeting in February 2009. Our President, Katrina van den Brenk, welcomed all and Norm Winn presented Katrina with a framed 15year certificate from Probus South Pacific Limited congratulating the club on its 15th birthday. After lunch Pam Carlson, Liaison Officer for the Probus Association of Queensland and member of Gympie Probus Club, inducted Katrina as President and Katrina in turn inducted members of the newlyelected 2024-25 committee.
Several items of entertainment were presented including an Aussie version of “My Favourite Things”, some Irish skits (it being St. Patrick’s day the previous week), a helpful health and beauty tip about shampooing your hair, and to wind up the day our singing trio, Judy, Val and Marie, presented a lovely rendition of “Drink to me only with Thine Eyes”. The only disappointment on the day was the absence of Vice President Cherryl Mossman who unfortunately broke a leg the night before Changeover and ended up having to stay in hospital. Our best wishes go to Cherryl for her recovery. At our April meeting Katrina had the pleasure of inducting new member, Fay Dixon – welcome, Fay! Our guest speaker was Graeme Parker who spoke to us about his passion for bushwalking in Tasmania – the planning and preparation and the great pleasure of walking whilst appreciating the beauty of nature. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and a break for afternoon tea and a chat. New members are always welcome. For more details please contact our President, Katrina on 0407 637 691 or Secretary, Kaye at cooloolaprobus@gmail.com.

Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report Tony Stewart
T
HE RAINBOW BEACH DROUGHTRUNNERS have had another steady month, and fortunately there have been no disasters where we may have been called in to help with hampers or Visa cards. As our last report missed the print for some reason, I will start with a few notes from that report. We have only sent in $500 to help feed the homeless but have also donated a big esky full of frozen meats and other grocery items. Bill Neale has continued to supply kids with wooden toys and thanks to Les and Dianne Neumann these were delivered to the Longreach School of Distance Education for delivery to children doing it tough out west.
Many thanks to all who recently delivered to our can collection bins at 10 Tingira Close, Rainbow Beach, your help along with our coordinator in Tin Can Bay (Wayne Kerle ) is much appreciated. A deposit from our collection tin at Tin Can Bay Bakery yielded $80, so many thanks to the contributors. Many thanks to our Local IGA for a wonderful donation, even though we don’t spend thousands there now as we did in the drought. SHOP LOCAL. We sold well over $200 worth of wooden toys made by Bill Neale at the Rainbow Markets in April, thank you to Bill and all the lucky purchasers. We still have some toys available. Many thanks to all once again.

OOLOOLA COAST Art Group will commemorate its tenth anniversary with the biennial Art Show to be held in July. The group has grown over the years and has become an important hub for the local community to participate in artistic activities. There have been organised workshops, art shows, exhibitions, studio trails, bus trips as well as the weekly gatherings. This year the biennial art show will be held at the RSL hall in Tin Can Bay. Please note the entry forms can be obtained from the libraries at Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay; the Gympie Regional Gallery; or by requesting a copy via email (see below). It can then be submitted via email or dropped into the letterbox at 1/28 Gympie Rd, Tin Can Bay. Entries will need to be delivered to the RSL on Thursday 4 July, from 11am for the show which runs from Friday 5 – Sunday 7 July. The opening will be on Friday 5 July from 5.30-7.30pm. In conjunction with the show is the Gympie Studio Trails 2024, where artists open their studios to the public
for the weekend. “Gympie Region Studio Trails is an annual initiative of Gympie Regional Gallery that invites visual artists, artisans, heritage workers and designers to open their studio doors and share their passions.” (GRC) In April, Cooloola Coast Art Group explored watercolour painting, with Kay Muir demonstrating her techniques for both flower and landscape painting. The group watched on, then trialled it for themselves. Life Drawing was held fortnightly as were plein-air outings when the weather permitted. A two day intensive workshop was conducted by Halina Paterson with participants gaining much knowledge about the many ways to draw line and tone. If you would like more information regarding any of these events or activities, please contact Kerri on 0438 803 990 or send an email to cooloolacoastartgroup@gmail.com The group’s Instagram site is @ cooloolacoastartgroup where you can see photos of the various activities.

HE MAKING OF RAINBOW BEACH book (Part 1) is still available, so with nearly 400 sold, we have had to get another order of 50 printed. $10 from the sale of each 306 page publication goes to a charity. $1000 has gone to each of the following: The Prostate Foundation of Australia, and Supporting Chemotherapy in Cooloola, with the next donation to a mental health charity to be decided by the Rainbow Blokes Group. Thank you to all the purchasers. Books are available at the Rainbow Post Office, 7th Wave Tourist Info Centre, Silk & Stone, and Shell Info Centre. A big thanks to Sam and Maureen (7th Wave) who have sold about 50.
Choir comes calling Jackie James
I
N APRIL, Coolabay Choir went calling…on Residency by Dillons. The residents were entertained with a selection of choral numbers and were invited to join in a sing-along with some well-known songs. The smiles and happy faces were testament to the enjoyment had by residents and choir members alike! It is hoped this will be a regular event on the choir’s calendar. Coolabay Choir is a non-auditioned community choir, open to all. We are keen to welcome new members – and no prior experience or ability to
read music is required! Come along and discover the joy of singing! The choir has a broad repertoire, covering a range of songs and genres – some old, some new, rounds, singalongs, and three-part harmonies. Coolabay Choir meets for an hour on Wednesdays at 3pm in the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall (behind Woolies). For more information about the Choir, please contact Pam Graham on 0427 180 649 or Jackie James on 0438 768 855. SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

Save the date for the Flower Show Cheryl Zunic
T
HE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee’s (LAC) annual Flower Show was a great success last year and we are planning to repeat the event on Saturday, 5 October this year. There was a wonderful response from all our exhibitors so we wanted to give everyone some advance notice to prepare your flowers, plants, and photographs for the competition. There will be more details regarding entry forms, opening times etc closer to the date of the show. The public support is much appreciated as all proceeds go towards helping our Cooloola Coast Ambulance Service. There will be stalls, raffles and plants for sale as well as morning and afternoon teas. Please make a note of the date and spend a very pleasant few hours among all the garden lovers and keen photographers in our community. Just a reminder that our other major fundraiser for the Ambulance Service is the weekly bingo sessions held on Thursdays at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, commencing at 9.30am. A fun morning is guaranteed.

ELLO ALL, how lovely to see some sunshine. Let’s hope it stays fine. Our Craft mornings are going well, nice to see a few new faces, they are amazed with all the projects we are involved in and of course are now knitting rugs, teddies for us, joining our Branch and keen to volunteer. Our focus this month is preparing for our High Tea on 29 May – this is our fundraiser for ‘Biggest Morning Tea” to support the Cancer Council. Please come along and support the cause. The competitions are open to the wider
community, with the schedule given out upon booking. By time of printing, Country Kitchen will have held our second workshop “Cooking for 1 or 2” which was fully booked, on 30 April. We hope to plan more workshops in the future, and to look at using a bigger venue. Sorry to the ladies that missed out. Dates for May: Craft – 1st and 2nd Wednesdays, 10am till 12 noon, $2.00, Morning Tea. Hoy – 3rd Wednesday, Cooloola Bowls Club $7.00
News from Kia Ora Hall Marian Young PRESIDENT
H
I FROM THE KIA ORA HALL. I am settling into my position as a member of the committee at the Kia Ora Hall. It hardly feels like I have been away for the last 15 years, and I love being back in the area. I was elected as President at the last AGM, and everyone has made me feel welcome. The hall has seen some major renovations over the past years following damage from flooding. Without the amazing effort put in by the citizens of the district and the committee, this would not have been achieved. Grants from Gympie Regional Council, The Community Benefit Gambling Fund, and Bendigo Bank have assisted along the way, from providing funds for the renovations and upgrade of facilities, being able to hold events at a reduced cost, a computer, defibrillator, and a coffee machine. None of these would have been possible without the amazing people who made up the committee over the last 10 years. Sandra Hamilton, who was at the helm for most of those years, has put her heart and soul into the community and the hall. I commend her commitment and appreciate her help to me personally. The rest of the committee is very supportive and show what teamwork is all about. Volunteers play a very important role in all aspects of the hall, but
none so much as our ‘mower-man’ Michael. He gives up hours at a time to keep the grounds looking fabulous, on his own mower, which has been a bit challenging over the last eight months with all the rain. The hall has been able to purchase a mower of their own and any help with mowing or whipper snipping, which has also been done by another volunteer, Lindsay Davidson, would be greatly appreciated. The recent Psychic Day was very well attended and we met a lot of beautiful people from the local area as well as Tin Can Bay and Glenwood. Another successful event was the Mead Making Workshop conducted by Amrita Park Meadery. We are just waiting on the electrician to complete the work so that the coffee machine can be installed. The second Sourdough Workshop was being held just as this paper was going to print and was set to be another popular event. Our regular events are in full swing: Yoga – Tuesday weekly at 9:30am TaiChi – Wednesday weekly at 9am

of mouth. Talking about a small business and recommending them to friends and family will help them get new customers and hopefully get more people to spread the word.
UEENSLAND SMALL BUSINESS Month 2024 runs through the month of May and is about recognising their contributions and supporting a vibrant and growing small business sector. This annual event sets out to highlight, celebrate, and support the thousands of small businesses operating across the state yearround while encouraging the community to get behind our favourites whether it be retail, trades, services, health or others – and let them know we love your small business.
l
l
Did you know there are more than 482,000 small businesses in Queensland that contribute around $117 billion to our economy? There are so many small businesses so it is important to shop small as well as support local businesses when you can so these businesses can thrive.
l
Here are some ways you can support small businesses:

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the Kia Ora Memorial Hall and we will keep you posted on our upcoming events.
10 am till 12 noon, lots of prizes, money board and raffles. BYO your own cup.
l
Like, comment and share social media posts because by simply engaging with their post you will be supporting them by getting their business in front of more people. Write a positive review which is so helpful for a small business as this shows their brand as a trusted place to buy from, helping others make the decision to purchase their product or service. Shop now for later. You can support small businesses by improving their cash flow now. Think about gifts, birthdays, or other purchases that you can buy now and give later. Show your appreciation. Tell them thank you. You can easily show genuine support by sharing your gratitude and thanking them for trying their best during hard times.
Commit to doing one small thing for a small business each week, whether it’s a purchase or a shout-out. Supporting small businesses each week will not only give you peace of mind, but will be helping the owners and the economy.
Our Rainbow Beach community only survives thanks to our local small businesses!

that they brought home.” At times it has seemed to be a long, hard road for the Cooloola Dragons, but persistence and hard work are beginning to pay off. There are great hopes that they will do very well in the upcoming Wide Bay Series which kicks off with the Bundaberg Regatta over the weekend of 11 May. As well as Bundaberg and Cooloola, the Wide Bay Series also includes Hervey Bay and 1770. The Cooloola Regatta is scheduled for the first week in July and will be held on the beautiful waters at Tin Can Bay. In the meantime, please come and join us at the Dragon’s Lair Café for tasty brekkies and snacks on the third
Saturday of every month coinciding with the Tin Can Bay Markets. You will get great food and be made to feel very welcome! Finally, our ‘newbies’ are gradually becoming accustomed to paddling and competition and are thoroughly enjoying the experiences. If you think that some paddling might suit you, please come down for a Thursday or Sunday training session and give it a try. It will cost you nothing to try out and you will find it is fun, satisfying, and very enjoyable. Please contact Head Coach Sandra on 0402 352 756 who will be happy to give you details of how to arrange a try-out.

OWDY CREW! Last month a crew of cadets headed to Agnes Waters to compete for their place on the Wide Bay Sports Surf Team. The group consisted of Blake, Jackson, Jarrah, Jimi, Jordan, Kirra, Mason, Max, Phoenix, and Tabitha. They were a respectful and happy group of groms who all surfed fantastically and had a lot of fun! They represented themselves, the club, their schools and the community beautifully and deserve a pat on the back for that alone! Congratulations goes to Tabitha, Kirra, Phoenix, Jordan and Mason who were all chosen to represent the Wide Bay in the upcoming State Selection, we wish them the best of luck! We’ve had a huge month fundraising every weekend at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club, many thanks! Our fundraising goal at the moment is a trailer, for storage and transport. Bring on autumn and those crisp and clear days on the beach!
Tabitha, Kirra, Phoenix, Jordan, and Mason were recently selected to represent Wide Bay in the upcoming State Selection.

Through autumn/winter our beach days will be held on the first Sunday of each month, see you on 5 May from 8.30am, at the bottom of the surf club stairs!

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report that there were still some reasonable by-catches of Flathead, Cod, Jew, and the inevitable Catfish. There were six boat crews attending and trying their best to achieve the desired result. New club member Josh Cronk secured the ‘closest to the pin’ rights with a Blue Salmon but unfortunately no Threadies. Even with these results, the day was enjoyable as a club outing. waters, doing what he does best by boating a 100cm plus Queenfish and in another trip soon after, a 110cm Giant Herring, great sport fish and a great job done. Marquis Chapman also got in on the action with some nice shore-based Mangrove Jack action. All fish safely released to fight another day. Our club Weighmaster Selwyn Potter braved the weather and had a good weekend with some lovely Flathead and a good haul of Mud Crabs. The spirit of the club came through again this month with another
working bee at the club house only inside this time cleaning and cataloguing stores and material all directed by grounds committee rep John Blackman – well done and thanks all. Short and sweet but here’s hoping for the start of those terrific May days to allow us to enjoy this beautiful area on or around the water. Tight lines, cheers.

We hope the program will help equip young fishers with knowledge, skills, and experiences that they will use over their lifetime. Film Night: Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra Rainbow Beach Library – Friday 31 May 5pm
Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra is a historically important film that takes the viewer through Bangarra’s birth and spectacular growth to where we are today entering our 4th decade. It recognises Bangarra’s early founders and tells the story of how three young Aboriginal brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page – turned the newly born dance group into one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies. Through the eyes of the Page brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.

Learning Community The end of Term 1 provided some great activities for the young people attending the Rainbow Beach Learning Community. Local artist Vicky Miles led them in another outstanding art workshop where they learned how to create water soluble graphite drawings with an Easter theme. On the last Thursday in the term the young people visited Jurassic Ark at Bells Bridge north of Gympie which is a world class outdoor museum and educational facility where we learned about rocks and fossils, had a go at digging up fossils, found petrified logs, and watched stalactites grow.
Sandcastle Competition The Sandcastle Competition was held on Wednesday 3 April on the first sunny morning of the school holidays after weeks of wet weather. Twelve teams lined up to register and were ready to create their masterpiece. It was great to see familiar faces from previous years with one family from the Gold Coast returning for the third time, saying that the Sandcastle Competition is the highlight of their holiday. Many local families joined together to form teams and local ladies Vicky, Julie, Lou, and Sue aka ‘The Sand Sistas’ arrived fully-equipped to create their masterpiece, George the reclining gorilla. Each year it is always amazing to see the creativity of each team, who obviously put in a great deal of thought as to what they will build. This year was no different with turtles, dolphins, starfish, castles, a combi van, and George the gorilla steadily taking shape during the morning. Arron from Sandshapers of Noosa was in attendance thanks to sponsorship received from Gympie Today, Rainbow Beach Realty, Cooloola Coast Realty and Rainbow Beach Community News and competitors and passersby were amazed at his incredible sandcastle that featured twisted turrets, steps and windows.
Arron had the difficult job of competition judge and the following teams were winners of their category: Most Lifelike Animal or Fish – Sand Sistas with George the Gorilla; Most Outstanding Sandcastle - the A Team from the Gold Coast, who as mentioned before, make the competition a feature of their holiday each year; and Open Category Team Sandy Cheeks with an amazing VW Combi Van. Each of the winning teams received a hamper of goodies and vouchers donated by local businesses Frying Fish, Rainbow Beach Pizzeria, Brooke’s Coffee Cart, Little Parliament, Rainbow Beach Post Office, Rainbow Beach Hardware, Rainbow Beach IGA, Silk & Stone, Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf, and Soul Food. Winning teams were also given a copy of the beautiful children’s book ‘ A Rainbow Story’ written by local author Elise Seul. Sam from the Rainbow Beach Tourist Centre donated a ball to each of the children who were part of the competition which was a lovely way to end the morning’s activities. The winning team of the People’s Choice Award with a massive 58 votes was ‘The Butterfly Effect’ led by local dad Ziggy with helpers Ellie, Zarya, Tully, Kat, Xaiya, and Taya with a great prize of a night’s accommodation in a family unit donated by Rainbow Sands Resort. Team members worked on several different projects which all combined to make a wonderful end result. The competition wouldn’t have happened without the help of Jed Elmer, Bec Hunter, Kerry Sleath, William Turner, Nat Hunter, and Ziggy Sigel from the Rainbow Beach Learning Community who assisted with setting up, registration, manning the sausage sizzle and serving. Recently re-elected Gympie Councillor Jess Milne arrived bright and early with her BBQ and gazebo which was much appreciated.
Raising funds for TurtleCare A group of dedicated locals have put up their hand to empty the bins containing recyclable bottles and cans next to Topsy the TurtleCare mascot at the Rainbow Beach Holiday

Village. Money raised from recycling goes towards the valuable work of the TurtleCare volunteers helping them to take care of our local turtle population through nest relocation and care of injured turtles.
Locals helping locals The Rainbow Beach Community Pantry has made a change to the contents of their $10 hampers which for the next month will consist of fresh veggies from Mitchell’s Fruit & Veg in Gympie, plus donations from Woolworths Cooloola, Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach IGA, and Ed’s Beach Bakery and single or familysized frozen meals. Hampers are available each fortnight from two distribution centres, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and the Cooloola Cove Vet’s Hall on Thursdays between 12.30 & 1.15pm. To order a hamper for yourself or

May Is For Mother’s Day OPENING HOURS 6AM - 8PM 7 DAYS
Hello and welcome to another edi on of the local Rainbow Beach IGA Rant. What another spectacular month it has been. The weather gods are not on our side this year. It seems like every weekend or holiday period, it is raining, storming or some major weather event is occurring. It is parcularly tough when the town relies on tourism and I know from my own experience that holidaying in the rain isn’t the most pleasant experience.

Anyway, I hope everyone is ge ng ready for winter, those 2 days of the year are fast approaching.

Community Support Our beloved Rainbow Beach IGA has always been more than just a supermarket. It’s a hub where locals gather, share stories, and support one another.

Whether it’s sponsoring local events, providing donaons, or simply being a friendly face, the IGA team is deeply ingrained in our community. Recently, the IGA Community Chest program has made a significant impact. Through this iniave, funds are raised to support local causes close to our hearts. From flood relief efforts to providing soccer balls for our young athletes, the Rainbow Beach IGA has been there every step of the way. And now, they’re introducing a new loyalty program to further engage with the community. Introducing Our New Loyalty Program Ÿ Rainbow Beach IGA is excited to announce its brand-new loyalty program! Here’s what you need to know: Ÿ 1000’s of weekly member-only specials which are a thank-you from our team to you. Ÿ The chance to go into major draws and win holidays and other fantasc give-aways. Ÿ Sign Up Today: Visit our store or check our website to sign up for the loyalty program. It’s free, easy, and a fantasc way to stay connected with our community.
Sports Update Ÿ The Broncos have had an evenul season so far. From thrilling victories to tough losses, they connue to fight on the field. Keep an eye out for their upcoming matches, including the clash against the North Queensland Cowboys. Reece is really showing his value and with Origin only around the corner. Who cannot wait! Ÿ The Lions haven’t roared like they did last year. They are saying that the trip to the US has not affected the team but brought them closer. The results are saying otherwise. They need to start finding their kicking boots soon or the season will be over before it has even begun. Poli cs Most of us know that there is going to be a state elecon this year. You cannot wait. It is a chance for the public to vote on how they judge the current government and/or what they think of the opposion. Steven Miles laughing at youth crime vicms and avid Crisafulli not really showing much. This elecon is going to be ght. Time will tell. Albo is doing Albo things. Nothing at all. Not sure about you, but I know electricity is up, cost of living is up, and fuel is expensive. Waing for all those elecon promises to start soon. Probably be waing forever. Anyway, isn’t that all policians Look at you straight in the eye and say one thing whilst their fingers are crossed behind their back. Thanks for your ongoing support. It is much appreciated serving this community. We look forward to many years to come. Unl next month. Stay safe and enjoy some family me.
