Seniors week, artists, festivals and more...

O

NCE AGAiN it has been a whirlwind of a month! There is a definite downside to bigger families: when lurgies hit, it takes a long time to leave the household. We've had two separate flues last month, and they have stalked each child until they succumb at frustratingly long intervals. Heatley enjoyed his night out at Lions, updating members on our backgrounds and plans for HT. There have been a load of businesses change hands, open or expand. What a sense of positivity for the hinterland. Our pages are full of festivals and celebrations and creative cuts is solid with talent to

check out over the next month. Artists dominate the August edition. From dance to drawing, poetry and plays - there is sure to be an event which attracts you. The other theme HT often resonates with is community. Our stories on George, Hunchy, Hugs, the Lions Welcome Dinner and the Range Kindy Reunion all demonstrate the richness of the towns and villages in which we live and work. For seniors week, take note of a few events in the What's On page and the Grey Medallion course (page 39). i did not know that more deaths occur in inland waterways than the coast, and this course

provides much more than first aid - and it is free. As HT is almost ready to shunt off to the printer, we are still receiving requests for coverage of August events. We'd love to help - please let us know about them as soon as you do, definitely prior to the 25th of the month so we can hopefully add to your promotion. July's “donkey” edition ran off the shelves quickly - so make sure you don't delay in securing your copy this month. Until next month, Michelle Gilmore editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au

SteamPunk Cinderella b

Different opened in september 2009 and has grown to over 160 students performing six styles of dance from ages three to adult. Owner, Lisa Gregor says, "Our show this year, steampunk Cinderella definitely highlight each student's unique personalities though the movement created by our teaching staff. ivy Fisher who plays Cinderella has shown an extreme amount of growth throughout this process and is someone to watch out for in the future." Very loosely based on Cinderella this story is full of surprises with poetry written by Angel Kosch and set design by sally Fisher. "This year we have taken it to another level. We are pushing the boundaries with our stunning choreography and weird, wonderful storyline."

on show "Our style of teaching and choreography is unique and inspires our young dancers to take a leap to enjoy dance in their own way. it gives them a chance to choreograph, teach or just participate in class and encourages growth not just in dance but also in their personal lives . Last year they had such a following for tickets to "Crown Of Thorns" after our first performance, that many missed out. Make sure you aren't disappointed this year - tickets available through trybookings for August 23 and 24.

HE RANGE Community Kindergarten at Mapleton is having an open day and informal reunion on August 30 and would love members of the community to drop in for a visit. Year 12 Maleny High school student Bonnie Hawke attended the Range Kindergarten in 2001 and recently returned for a visit and said of the kindy, “it still feels really nice and cosy here and Margaret doesn’t look any different”. Bonnie still sees old friends from her time at kindy and this year her niece, Maddie is a Range Kindy kid and having a great time. Margaret Lamb has been director of the kindy for the past 14 years and said, “it would be great to see more students from years past and find out where their lives have taken them. i like to think kindy contributes to the foundation of our children’s lives and is an integral part of the community it helps to create.” Anyone wanting to come and see how much the kindergarten has changed over the years or interested in visiting their children’s future kindy is welcome to come along to the Range Kindy Reunion and Open Day. The morning will include a sausage sizzle, face painting, craft activities and a small petting zoo. The open day and reunion will run from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm on saturday 30 August. For any enquiries, please call the Range Community Kindergarten on 5445 7515.

Donald Greenfield’s sabbatical after five years of contributing cartoons to the Hinterland Times has birthed ‘Fistful of Chords’, a limited edition collection of cartoons ranging from offbeat to extremely whimsical with wistful thrown into the mix. It covers forty years of Donald’s work with pen including his very first drawing published in Nation Review, an Australian weekly newspaper.

HE BOOK’s title ‘Fistful of Chords’ speaks volumes of man who has had a lifelong affair with music. ‘Music is part of my world, of who i am. i’ve worked with opera companies, classical musicians and rock ‘n rollers too. This book is a lovely selection of personal choice pieces including some that were published in the Hinterland Times,’ said Donald. Born into music, Donald tells of euphoniums stacked under beds, cornets in cupboards and snare drums. His

father was a naval bandsman playing the trombone before and during WW11. The child grew up surrounded by musical instruments most of which belonged to his dad. And his brother learnt classical guitar which opened the young Donald’s ears to another form of music. ‘When John was practising on the verandah late into the night i would lie in bed listening to the strains of Bach and Villa-Lobos…” he said nostalgically. Musical immersion early in life rippled and merged with Donald’s love of pen and ink as the youngster matured. Working with musicians has been an obsession revealing itself in his work through collaborations and personal friendship. At one stage he was considered the Australian version of noted English cartoonist Gerard Hoffnung.

The world of the professional cartoonist opened when Donald posted work to a newspaper. He said, ‘i didn’t think cartoonists got paid way back then. i sent the work in and it was accepted and lo and behold, a couple of months later a cheque for ten dollars arrived in the post and i thought, how long has this been going on? so i thought; i’ll send off some more!’ A table that emanates history takes pride of place in Donald’s home. its oblong pine structure marked with annals of time speaks of its beginnings in a tailor’s workshop and a time when a child’s tactile senses came alive. ‘i grew up in tailor shops. My dad was a tailor…my grandfather was a tailor…my uncle was a tailor. i was surrounded by bolts of cloth and very eccentric individuals. This table came from my grandfather’s work bench. When my dad died he was the last in the business, it was the end of an era and i took the table. All my work has virtually been produced on this table…this is my office,’ said Donald. ‘Drawing is part of my life…it always has been. For as long as i can remember i’ve held a pen or a pencil in my hand. i recall in first grade in 1956, i told my teacher that one day i was going to be a cartoonist,’ he said. Pen and ink expression through the art of calligraphy had its beginnings in a primary school copybook and fits well with Donald’s pride of handwriting. The dedication in ‘Fistful of Chords’ reveals a special relationship. it reads: For Maddy, my best mate through thick and thin. Maddy, a classic roan or spotted dog was a mix of many and Donald’s constant and faithful companion of fourteen years. ‘she survived tick bites, snake bites, my singing and she laughed at my jokes!’ he said wistfully. Born on Valentine’s Day, Donald Greenfield describes himself as the eternal romantic possibly revealed in his cartoon ‘infectious disease - incurable romantic’. There is an obvious romance with nature, in particular, the garden. Donald picks flowers daily. They are an important part of his life. ‘Each day i pick flowers just for the inherent beauty and the pleasure it gives me looking at them,’ and quips that even though a former article alluded to flower arranging, he states that it’s not a formal matter adding that he’s never had an art lesson in his life either. Donald describes his hinterland home at Witta as his heartland and spiritual home for the past thirty years moving there permanently in 1998. ‘i made it my centre of the universe. i don’t have to live in exotic places to be an interesting person because i already live in one of the most exquisite places on the planet,’ he said and then jokes, ‘To live like this anywhere else you have to be a successful criminal or rock star! But it’s homeland to me.’ The character that is Donald Greenfield is effervescent and exudes warmth. He studied violin for a time, plays guitar and sings in the shower. ‘And for most of my life i’ve kept the company of scoundrels and dogs!’ he says with a cheeky air. The publication of ‘Fistful of Chords’ is Donald’s legacy intent on creating a record for his son and daughter. it is a selection of pieces that pleases the author whether they’ve been published or not. The collection spans his prolific career as a cartoonist. ‘i wanted the book to look like the way i felt and it tells much about me. This body of work is a twisted world of guitars, groupies and beautiful desperados!’ he offers playfully. Donald describes a world without satire or irreverence as being like a world without flowers or Christmas trees. imagine a satire free society. ‘it would be a barren place. There’s a lot in our world to laugh about.’ He’s toured with the Queensland symphony Orchestra as cartoonist in residence and played in the Nation Review nursery with the likes of Mungo MacCallum, Michael Leunig,

Patrick Cook and Victoria Roberts. Prestigious publications have featured Donald Greenfield’s cartoons, he’s exhibited in state galleries and a collection of work was published by Penguin. Louche themes lurk within this racy collection of cartoons and drawings that is ‘A Fistful of Chords’…Donald Greenfield personified. Doug Flockhart, CEO of Clubs Queensland will launch ‘Fistful of Chords’ at the Old Witta school, Witta Road on saturday, 9 August commencing 2pm.

Community

Even to many long term locals, ‘Hunchy’ is “that windy road between Palmwoods and Montville”. If we were to take a little more time to explore, we would discover a delightful country drive and stumble upon an even more delightful old school building seemingly in the middle of nowhere. N A CRisP, cold Friday night in July, the community of Hunchy has gathered at the old Hunchy school building for their monthly pizza night. Taking it in turns to prepare the pizzas, this night it was Annie and her team of Timbergym members creating pizza after pizza to feed the hungry group. Ali who owns and runs ‘Hunchy Hideaway’ B&B is overjoyed at the turnout, usually they cater for 35 to 40 people but over 70 locals have gathered to catch up and have a chat around the fire despite the temperature being in single figures. ‘Community’ is often defined as either: a group of people living in the same geographical area or a group of people sharing the same interests and/or goals. But, a community without a place to meet is not a community at all; it is just a lot of families living in the same

area with no interaction. They live side by side but they do not converse, join together, share ideas or interests. ‘Hunchy school’ was open from 1924 as a one teacher school for the children of the local farming families but as numbers dropped down in 1969 it was deemed there were not enough students to warrant the school to remain open. The children then had to travel to Montville Primary school up the long and windy road to the top of the hill. The charming high-set Queenslander with its wrap around veranda consists of just one school room. For a school which was closed 28 years ago, it would be easy for it to remain an empty shell, an abandoned part of our local history. Thanks to the hard work of the Hunchy Community Association and a grant from the local council, the school building has been repaired and restored complete with a new kitchen and is used as the local library every saturday

and meeting point for the First Tuesday Club who catch up for a chat and a coffee. Once lined with school desks, the school room now has bookshelves on every wall with a scattering of chairs, and a kettle in the corner to share a cuppa. Proudly hung on the wall is a photo of a quilt that was pieced by many locals and then raffled as a fund raiser. The newest improvement due to a grant from the local Heritage Bank, is Hunchy school's new wood fired pizza oven. several of the Hunchy locals here for pizza tonight are former pupils at the school. Brother and sister, Rod Carter and Kay Williams both went to school at Hunchy and are happy to share their memories of the school building and life when they were children. Rod remembers riding his horse three miles to school as Kay, five years younger, tagged along behind. Taking advantage of the diverse landscape, Rod explains that his father “had about seven acres of bananas on the hillside, small crops on the flat and ran dairy cattle which were all milked by hand”. some of the original farms has now been subdivided but could only be split into smaller acreages so the area has never lost its rural feel. A younger generation is swelling into the area, the pizza night also is a great way for all the local kids (and their dogs) to run amok in a safe area and have some fun while Mums and Dads catch up around the fire. Mrs Duggan, who also went to Hunchy school as a child, enjoys the pizza night just as much as the kids, and says “this is a wonderful idea, we have always been a community that has come together”. Now the pizza oven gives them the opportunity to do it on a more regular basis. The Hunchy school Association’s vision states: “We hope to inspire, encourage and enable people to reconnect with their land and their community”.

Hunchy School in 1963

indeed, the locals at Hunchy have proven they can proudly and accurately use the title of “Community”. Hunchy school Pizza nights are on the 2nd Friday of every month, jump onto facebook for extra information, $10 entry fee per person not only gives you your fill of pizza but goes towards the Hunchy Community Association Fundraising to maintain this treasure for years to come.

sEE AN OLD MAN walk past my house every day. He uses a walking frame. There is something familiar about him but i’m not sure what. All i know is that he intrigues me. if an old man can walk every day (even in the rain), then why don’t i? so i walk my daughter to the bus stop and under the Jacaranda trees near Maleny showground, i meet the old man. “Hello, you really inspire me.” He laughs. “How old are you?” he asks with an accent. “Forty-four.” “i am ninety-four,” he taps his chest with pride. He looks twenty years younger. “Where are you from?” “Maleny.” He says. “No. Originally?” “From Yugoslavia.” “Oh, my father is from over there.” “Which suburb of Yugoslavia?” he asks. “The Croatian suburb,” i smile. He touches my arm and says, “i am from serbia but my brother married a Croatian girl.” i love that he looked for similarities instead of differences and we share a few words in his language. i ask him what the secret is to living a long life and he laughs, “i have a contract with my stomach to only put good things into it.” He eats raw garlic, raw honey, fermented food, very little meat, he walks every day and he never smoked or drank alcohol.

Left: George laughing Above left: Branka and George in the Maleny bakery 1980 Above right: Family portrait 1958: George, Biljana, Lazar and Branka Below: George and son Lazar walking near the showground

so as the days pass, i wave to George and look forward to our chats. He has a cup of tea with me, shares words of wisdom and always makes me laugh. i introduce my Croatian father – Nikola, to my serbian friend – George, and hold back tears when i watch them talk about the old days like brothers. No differences, only camaraderie, respect and love. George was born Ljubisav sretenovic but calls himself George. Ljubisav translated means “loves with all his heart” – a name perfect for him. Born in Trucevac (serbia), 1920, the oldest boy of nine children, he had two years of schooling before he had to work the family farm. Conscripted into the serbian army in 1944 during World War ii, he received a medal from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in Australia for fighting on the side of the Allies. in 1947, George married Branka Gagic, and when i ask him what it was that captivated him, he says, “Her mother was a good woman, intelligent, kept a good house, was a good cook, so i thought she was likely to be also.” Fortunately for George, Branka turned out to be just like her mother. After the war, George opened a bakery near Belgrade (skills he gained in the army). in 1949, their son Lazar was born and the family moved to the historical city of Pula on the istrian Coast (Croatia) with one of the most magnificent colosseums in the world, and in 1953 their daughter Biljana was born. George says life under Communism was hard, “i was not a Communist...i had no freedom.” His parents gave him a bible at ten years of age instilling in him a strong Christian faith which not even Communism could dissolve.

unlike my father and so many who risked their lives by running over the borders of former Yugoslavia in search of freedom, George fought for years to do it legally. in 1965, he finally secured a visa for Australia, paving the way for others to migrate. The family came out on the ship “Galileo” stopping in Egypt where George said, “i took my darling to see Cairo and the pyramids.” They lived in Melbourne, until they moved to Brisbane in 1974, just after the “big flood”. Biljana, persuaded her parents to move to Maleny in 1980. she owned the Bowl fruit shop and convinced her father to open a bakery next door [where the existing bakery is today]. He was sixty years old. George says “Maleny was a town that looked like it was dying” and marvels at how it is thriving now. After two years, George retired from the bakery and enjoyed life with his “darling” Branka until she died in 2011, aged 88. They shared 65 years together and his secret for a long and happy marriage is, “Give each other a second chance.” When i ask George to describe himself, he is too humble to give me adjectives. instead he philosophises, “How is it that i only had two years of schooling but i know that i don’t know and all i want is to know.” it is this thirst for learning that has shaped his life and his good relationships with people. Lazar says, “Dad is very popular, everyone loves him.” “What’s your message to the world George?” He ponders, “First is that you do not know; second is that we need peace not war, they have not yet discovered how to put the energy of love into bombs and third, there would be less problems in the world if we learnt how to forgive.” George has no regrets about his life and true to his name he has lived a full and happy life, who has loved with all his heart.

Poetry in Motion by Victoria McGuin

If you ever feel like spending a couple of hours having your emotions tossed about, over a bite to eat, then here is just the thing. The Sunshine Coast Spoken Word is a unique monthly event where poets and performers get up and share their thoughts, stories and anecdotes through verse, poetry and song.

B

ACK iN JANuARY 2013, performance poet and writer, Robin “Archie” Archbold created the first of these events. The venue was Le Jardin Garden Centre in Flaxton and the place was packed – showing Archie that the Hinterland had been crying out for something like this. Over the last eighteen months sCsW has popped up in Le Jardin, Maleny and Rick’s Diner, Palmwoods. Now, however, they have found a more permanent home at the warm and welcoming Bella Cucina in Montville, a relaxed, cosy venue with delicious italian food, fairy lights and the Montville Water Wheel gently sloshing outside. Greeting you in his top hat, Archie is the sCsW resident host and has the ability to make everyone feel relaxed, happy and appreciated, whether audience, performers or staff. He is passionate about creating an empathetic space where people can express or feel whatever they want, where people “are allowed to be vulnerable”.

10

HiNTERLAND TiMEs – AuGusT 2014

Having attended some of these gigs, i can attest that one minute you could be laughing your head off and the next you may be in tears. such is the versatility, vast range and depth of artistic musings on offer. Award-winning poets from across the country headline the monthly gig, with regular performers, irish Joe Lynch, ian Mackay and Harry Donnelly adding their original voices to the mix. An open mic spot for visitors and locals is waiting to tempt anyone who wants to sign up – you can be as philosophical or carefree as you like. i watched a local writer stand for the first time in front of the microphone and pay homage to her husband and his shed – the applause from the audience was huge. All of this is down, in no small part, to Archie and his ethos for the sCsW, that it is a place of honesty and trust. “Everyone should find their voice; get out of the way of themselves and the things that block them.”

As an audience member at some of these events, it has been refreshing and gratifying to enjoy a few afternoons listening to people express “the human condition.” Time is valuable and precious for us all, and spending it with Archie and his sunshine Coast spoken Word is hugely satisfying. i highly recommend a visit. When: sunshine Coast spoke Word is on the first sunday of every month, from 2pm-5pm. Booking not compulsory but strongly advised. ADuLT ONLY EVENT. Where: Bella Cucina, 3/182 Main street, Montville. Tel: 07 5478 5677 Price: $10.

To help people achieve this, he believes it is vital to create a warm, supportive and friendly dynamic, and he drops his guard with raw and funny poetry, so other people drop theirs. Curious to find out more about the man underneath the (rather large) hat, i met Archie at the Montville Coffee Pot and asked him how his poetic journey began. As i suspected, his formative years were spent devouring books and winning writing awards at High school. However, despite this literary beginning he ended up studying economics, dropping out one semester short of a degree. Disenchanted with his current path, he started a Real Estate business in Nimbin, where he was known as “the hippie, yuppie business dude.” Eight years later he knew he still wasn’t following his true path and sold the successful business before travelling overseas to clear the cobwebs. upon his return he began a Creative Writing degree, which he completed in 2012. Finally he was on track. During these career comings and goings, and struggles with depression, Archie was still a champion of the spoken Word. He was continually “dabbling in poetry,” performing in

festivals from Gympie to sydney. He is currently the only performer to win both the Woodford Folk Festival Poetry slam and the Woodford Folk Festival storytelling Award. in 2003 he co-founded the Nimbin Performance Poetry World Cup, putting up $6,000 of his own money as the first prize. There were an impressive fifty six competitors covering four venues. “it was a tournament, with heats of eight people each,” he explains, and you had to be pretty exceptional to get through to the final. The yearly event is still going strong and considered one of the career pinnacles for spoken Word performers in Australia. Moving to Mapleton with his “wife and muse,” Jodie and his daughter Ella, his creative drive spurred him on to form the sunshine Coast spoken Word. Tired of mainstream media telling people what and how to think, he wanted real people with real lives to share their stories. Archie believes we are all storytellers and that “our whole life is different views, different stories.” The sCsW is a place to bring those stories to life. “The narrative has been hijacked. i want us to take it back.”

A Celebration of New Beginnings and Belonging 44 Lowe Street, Nambour www.stephenhammond .com.au

Feel like a great night out? The Maleny Blackall Range Lion’s Club invites new folk, locals and businesses to the ninth Annual Welcome Dinner. Newcomers, Sue and Peter Callaghan tell Leeza Baric about last year’s event and how it helped them settle into life into the hinterland.

T HAs BEEN said that the top three stresses in life are: loss of a loved one, divorce and moving home! Nine years ago, Colin simpson, from the Maleny Blackall Range Lion’s Club came up with a way to relieve some of that stress. He organised a Welcome Dinner for new residents and locals to connect. Last year over two hundred people attended. sue and Peter Callaghan had no such stress. Peter was born and bred in Rockhampton and sue grew up on a sheep station near Winton, but they dreamed of retiring in Maleny. On their drives to Brisbane, they’d find any excuse to “duck in” and enjoy the hinterland. Last year, they bought their home from Jess Luthje at Maleny Realty, who invited them to the dinner. Jess says, “Having moved away from Maleny briefly, i do understand what it’s like to move to a new area and not know anyone. it can be daunting and a bit lonely and that’s one of the reasons i support the Lions' Welcome Dinner every year." Many other local real estate agents champion the event and encourage new people to attend.

Peter says, “it was a great introduction to Maleny.” sue agrees, “We came away feeling that we were really welcomed, and more importantly, that we belonged!” “it was a lovely atmosphere. We had a good meal and the Mayor came up and welcomed us. We met our neighbours from around the corner, at that dinner.” New residents receive a Welcome Pack from local businesses and sue says, “The gifts were wonderful, each person went home with gifts such as a little tree from Barung, a voucher from simply stylish and another package from Maleny Optical, which i thought was very generous.” sue and Peter have eased into life on the range by becoming involved in local groups and organisations. sue volunteers at the Maleny information Centre where they are taken on “familiarisation trips” around the hinterland in order to gain and pass on knowledge. “i’m just learning so much about the area, finding little cottages, walks, and waterfalls.” Attending their local church has also helped them meet the community and Peter is now the Congregational Chair of Maleny uniting Church. He also attends the local Chamber of Commerce breakfasts because of his strong interest in business and community. Peter works part time as a consultant for the Disability services industry and enjoys gardening, cooking and photography. sue has also developed a passion for photography and undertook a course with Andrew Goodall from Montville. she entered her work in the Maleny show, “just for fun” and received first prize in two categories for the past two years. sue enjoys yoga classes with Maree O’Connor at the Rainforest Centre and is working on her family history. sue and Peter have two sons, Josh and David who live in Brisbane and are excited to become grandparents very soon. Hugo, their lively 15 week old Bishoodle, keeps them busy in the meantime. Peter believes the best advice to locals and new people is, “Just be friendly to your neighbours.” sue points out, “it’s up to us as new people to make the effort and reach out too. Just little things, smiling and waving as you go past.” Life is good for the Callaghans and sue believes, “Maleny is a place that is welcoming to anybody and everybody and it doesn’t matter where you’re from or your background. it’s so diverse and i think that’s what makes it so interesting and so alive.” “We still pinch ourselves sometimes as we walk down the street, thinking, we actually live here.” The Welcome Dinner will be held on Wednesday 17th september at Maleny showgrounds, at 6pm. Cost is $35 per person including entertainment by local violinists Astar and Rawhina Castle and dinner by Tranquil Park Catering. Tickets are available from simply stylish - Riverside Centre; Birdy’s Fashion & Beauty in Maleny; soothe hairdressing in Montville or Mapleton Library. A new chapter for Maudy’s E

LEVEN YEARs AGO Anita smiley launched herself and Maudy's into the world of hospitality. From that day to this, Anita has steadfastly guided Maudy's and made it a landmark establishment in Witta, just out of Maleny on the way to Kenilworth. Well, the time has come for Anita to hang up her apron and spend her time in the sun with husband Jack and family.

so Anita thank you from us all who have spent many happy hours in your care, enjoying delicious food. Now it's your turn, enjoy. But this is not the end of Maudy's Restaurant and Bar, far from it! Maudy's is in for a whole new chapter, bistro style, with new owners are at the helm as we speak - known for their quality service and style and you know them well. You have enjoyed his food before in Maleny establishments, so has city hall and the corporate boxes of Brisbane. sam Kulkarni is bringing his passion for food and new interesting ideas to Maudy's at Witta. Opening Wednesday through to Monday for lunch and dinner, sam will also provide a limited take away menu and incorporate some share plates and a selection of well priced wines and beers. The aim is to make Maudy's your local bistro. The menu may change but the quality will not. Nor will the aim for a friendly, hospitable eatery and Ron will be there from time to time to make sure that happens. so thank you Anita and to sam, we look forward to enjoying your food again, with a new twist.

Bastille Day, summertime, Flowers & Food i

HAD HOPED to give you a jolly account of the happenings in Juignac and surrounds in celebration of “la Fête Nationale” (that’s Bastille Day in Oz). Alas, i can’t. Mainly because nothing really happened here. The only French flags we saw jauntily blowing in the breeze were the two Val and i had bought for our front porch. (Doing our bit for the hamlet, don’t you know?) Perhaps i‘m being a bit severe because there were fireworks at Montmoreau and Chalais, our two shopping towns. Friends, ian and Pam, invited us for a BBQ and perhaps a glass or two of a fine Bordeaux and then to watch local fireworks from the deck of their house. The BBQ was rained out, the Bordeaux excellent, and the sky show very good. Later, we could hear dance music in the distance, presumably for the traditional “public dancing in the street”…though this year in the rain! But enough…it’s summertime and the French certainly do a good summer. Today, it’s hot enough to burn the skin off a basking lizard! it’s summertime; the villages are beautiful with stunning flower beds and pots everywhere. Any Commune councillor silly enough to ignore summer time flower arranging responsibilities would be set upon by vengeful, pitchfork wielding villagers. Mon Dieu, it would be a hangin’ offence for a village to be downgraded by a fleur or two in the “Villes et Villages Fleuris” ratings.

&

Doing our bit for Bastille Day

Town bridges seem to be the favoured architectural structure for displaying a Commune’s floral artistic flair. Every town bridge we have seen is florally decorated. Typically on the railing on each side there will be several long pots filled with carefully chosen plants. They may simply be chosen to present a proliferation of colour or as a repeating pattern of just two colours. The more daring floral architects will have multiple pots soaring several meters high. The colours are rich and vivid. summer is also the time for “vide greniers” markets. “Vide grenier” means “from the attic” and it’s the opportunity to get rid of all the stuff that accumulates in the

attic. Each village holds a vide grenier and each stall seems to have the same unsellable stuff! Val has developed a passion for the vide grenier but i think it’s that voyeuristic instinct to check out everyone else’s stuff. “Oh, i’ve got one of those at home” or “Hey, isn’t that piece just awful…it’ll never sell” The best “vide grenier” combines genuine car-boot stalls and dealer stalls. We’ve been to enough now, however, to recognize many of the various dealers showing up at each event. To our dear mature children at home, rest assured that your Christmas presents are being carefully sourced from only the very best of the second hand stalls! A vide grenier we visited recently was near the village of Les Essaudes and beautifully situated on a country laneway running alongside the river Dronne…well it would have been beautiful if a summer torrential storm had not done it’s worst. We particularly felt for one stall holder presenting a huge range of baby wear so carefully laid out. All were totally saturated. Last of the big spenders that we are (sorry about the inheritance, kids) we had intended to treat ourselves to a take-away helping of the French national dish, frites, to which i’ve become quite addicted. Two long marquees joined side by side in the field just had to be the mess tent. We trudged through the rain and the soaking grass on the quest for our hot frites. Bingo! A gay and noisy troupe of volunteers were bustling about a make-shift kitchen ready to serve the expected hordes of hungry fete visitors. A quick reconnaissance and a few rudimentary questions established the rules. A complete “plateau du

repas” was the offering at the staggering price of eight euro. “Hang the expense, let’s do lunch” Val enthusiastically decided. Each plateau (that’s tray) included a roll of bread, a melon quarter, triangle of cheese, a small éclair, a generous serve of frites and either two BBQed sausages or a heap of moules (mussels to us) and a cup of vino, rouge or rose. Not feeling culinary adventurous i opted for snags; Val took the moules and was well satisfied. That’s another gourmet box ticked for her. There we were in the soaked marquees, rain thudding on the roof, water dripping in from the gaps where the roofs joined, half the bench seats wet, lighting sometimes on, sometimes off, the rattle of another batch of cooked moules being tossed into the serving tureens, and the laughter and chatter of the volunteers. Marvellous.

“Oh, bottom, it’s still raining! And why leave such a happy place?” we ask ourselves. i brave the internal waterfalls and join the short queue for a second round of vin rouge, just 50 centimes a plastic cup full. Vin rouge extraordinaire, it surely is. à bientôt, Bryan and Val Ps Dear reader you can check out our full blog at http://valmaiandbryan2.blogspot.fr/

Celebrating the terroir of our region’s food

Terroir is the set of qualities expressed in a region’s food, primarily determined by the geography, geology and climate. These qualities, together with the region's heritage and culture, create a unique experience and sense of place.

HE suNsHiNE Coast has a long history of agricultural abundance: bunya nuts, fruits seafood harvested by and aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years; citrus and beef through the pioneering decades; dairy produce for more than one hundred years and today an impressive variety of crops and niche foods. With overlapping temperate and sub-tropical climates, and pockets of tropical microclimate, the sunshine Coast’s year-round growing season yields an enormous range of foods. Then there’s what we do with it! Chefs are drawn to the sunshine Coast for its potent combination of good food and relaxed lifestyle, sensing the momentum building as we are increasingly recognised as a food destination. We may be a young region in that sense, but innovative players throughout our food supply chain are challenging accepted practice and putting their own interpretation on what comprises good food. Two such players are Cameron Matthews from The Long Apron at Montville and Kacey Walker from Walker Farm Foods at Cambroon. Cameron’s celebrated and multi-hatted restaurant at spicer's Clovelly Estate in Montville strives to interpret good food in ways that delight all the senses. Committed to using local, fresh, nutrientdense ingredients as far as possible, Cameron creates dishes that have delightful textures and unexpected flavours. Dining at The Long Apron is a journey through the region’s terroir via quirky combinations of various elements, connected by their location or heritage. “With good ingredients, you don’t have to mess around with them too much to get a great result, he confesses. “i love using farm fresh produce, especially when it’s obvious that the farmers have put their heart and soul into producing it. in the upper Mary Valley, third-generation local Kacey and “ringin husband, George, have taken to diversified farming like ducks to water. Or, in their case, chickens to pasture. Their family farm, which

20

also produces cow’s milk and beef, is making a name for itself as a producer of nomadic pastured eggs and meat chickens. The farm is modelled on Joel salatin’s famous operation in Virginia, usA. The Walkers use caravans to house their laying hens - the vans are towed into a paddock after the dairy or beef herd has grazed it and the chickens add their own nitrogenous fertilizer, thus regenerating the pasture. This practice results in healthier livestock and a significant reduction in costly inputs and waste – both key factors in farm profitability. More importantly, from Cameron’s perspective, is that “their eggs taste like eggs and their chickens taste like chickens”, he recently swooned at the launch of this year’s Real Food Festival program. The relationship between Kacey-the-producer and Cameron-the-chef, which began as a ‘farm-to-restaurant’ supply chain connection, has blossomed into a friendly collaboration: Kacey personally delivers hand-picked chickens to the restaurant door and Cameron provides valuable feedback and encouragement to their farming operation. To celebrate this friendship, Kacey will be joining Cameron in the Kunara Real Food Kitchen at this year’s Real Food Festival to have a conversation about what they each do: their passion, their respective enterprises and what drives their commitment to producing good quality food – literally from paddock to plate. Other chef-producer presentations this year include Chris White from Hungry Feel Eating House at Buderim in conversation with Alexina Johnson from Obi Obi Essentials, and Eric Pernoud from Maison de Provence in Cooroy in conversation with Angela Caballero from Hermes strawberries in Wamuran. Cameron and Kacey’s presentation is taking place on sunday 14 september at 10am. Don’t miss it!

A new hub for Montville

Artist and a musician, Maree Gwynne from A Band Called Twang, opened her new salon called Honeycomb Hairdressing in Montville's old post office, and tells HT about herself and the business.

How long have you been in the area? We moved our family from Manly in Brisbane to a wonderful bush forest property in the hinterland village of Eudlo in 2009. Our kids started school at Montville last year, and there was no turning back after that... ... and working as a hairdresser? i have been hairdressing for longer that it would be cool to say... having said that, hairdressing has always been a part of my life. i started my trade with a very busy company and was fortunate to enjoy several hairdressing competition wins which led me to some great overseas trips and being positioned as a leader and trainer in the industry. And why did you choose Montville, and the old Post Office location? i had been thinking about what would be ideal for a salon in the village, and when i saw this position, i knew it could be perfect. if i could provide a community service to replace the valuable service that had preceded me, i believed that the village would embrace my vision. What inspired your business name? Bees remind us to focus on the nurturing of our family, community and support networks. Honeycomb symbolically is a powerful analogy for what has always been my focus: family and community... Honeycomb Hairdressing equates to natural, community focused hairdressing.

What services do you offer? At Honeycomb Hairdressing we offer everything from men's; women's and children's haircuts to ballayage, foiling, keratin straightening and perms, formal and bridal hair, facial waxing and tinting. We offer ammonia free organic options where possible, and we are a part of the salons with integrity movement aiming to keep our product as local and sustainable as possible. Your links to the area, any groups you are involved with? The salon although very young, is already becoming a hub for Hinterland residents. in the future we will be utilising the wall space for local artists and offering informal exhibition openings from time to time. We are a happy supporter of the Montville state school stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, but i believe that we are doing so much more than that. Bringing another service based business to the community that is not only exclusive to occasions, but encompassing the needs of the people who live here, the guests who visit the Range, who knows the possibility of what more we can do together? Honeycomb Hairdressing is open Tuesday to Saturday, you can call Maree on 5442 9269 for an appointment.

Hugs to

you... This happy band of hinterland huggers are spreading joy and reaching out, all with the simple power of touch.

T

HE HuG PATROL, a group of self-confessed ‘hug addicts’ began offering free hugs long before youtube made the practice a world-wide phenomenon. it was Maleny in 2001 when founder, Arcadia Love gathered some friends and formed a group to go out offering hugs. “Our first big gig was The Woodford Folk Festival” recalls Arcadia. “Every afternoon we would head off in our unmistakable uniform of bright stripy pants, printed t-shirt and cap, to ask festival-goers one question, ‘Would you like a hug?’” it was amongst the dust and the sweat that the huggers, a diverse group of men and women of all ages came to realise the impact they were having. “The festival was hosting a group of refugee women one day” said Arcadia. ABC Radio broadcaster and author sandy McCutcheon was looking after them and our women

huggers gave each of them a warm embrace. Weeks later i received a letter from sandy.” “At Woodford,” he wrote, “The icing on the cake this year was, without doubt, The Hug Patrol. This extraordinary group of individuals has probably no idea of just what a positive impact they have. i was fortunate to witness the effect they had on a large group of refugee women from Afghanistan. For women whose lives are in tatters, families are scattered or dead, the rare moment of physicality was of tremendous importance. To see the looks on their faces and the pleasure at being held was a rare gift.” The group has since hugged their way around festivals, markets and special events and more wonderful stories have followed. “There was the woman who’d had a mastectomy and wanted to be hugged on the side where her breast had been, the young girl who asked to be hugged by a father as

her Dad was serving in iraq and the backpacker who had just landed in Australia and was homesick. We gave him a group hug!” But not everyone says yes to a hug. “some say no, others are hesitant and a few see us and head in the other direction. We don’t mind. it’s all about hugging those who want to be hugged and not forcing ourselves on anyone. it’s funny, people often comment about how generous we are to be giving hugs. i reckon we’re actually quite selfish as we’re the ones who get hundreds every time we go out!” Arcadia believes that now, more than ever people need to reach out to one another. “We seem to forget, living here on the Range where community is strong and we connect with each other regularly, that elsewhere the picture is quite different. As a society we are becoming more isolated. Through social media we can communicate with one another, but what’s missing is that basic human need of touch.”

Economic Futures Board Report

Regular visits to Erowal, Maleny’s aged care facility highlights this beautifully and is always quite emotional for the huggers. “We all know someone – a parent or grandparent. As we are taken around Erowal, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the gift that we are giving these folk with just a simple embrace. Francoise smith, Diversional Therapist and a hugger herself, wrote to the group after one visit. “The Hug Patrol brought a lot of joy to aged residents and staff alike. Touch is really important for the aged and most older people never get enough of it. in institutions where loneliness and isolation is a sad reality, the bright, cheerful and loving Hug Patrol brings a ray of sunshine.” A powerful moment happened a couple of years ago at a Father's Day event. A few huggers commented on the bittersweet feeling in the air. it was a celebration of fathers, yet many men were there alone or as solo parents. Arcadia recalls one hug that truly made a difference. “i approached a man who was on his own. When i hugged him, he quietly started to cry. immediately i called to the rest of the huggers, “Group Hug!” We wrapped ourselves around

him and stayed there for some time. Business Bites Travel and take 10 years off your mortgage Changing the way you commute to Brisbane could save you around $87,000 in mortgage interest repayments and reduce your loan by about 10 years, according to Mark Vaney of CommuterXpress (pictured with Cr Jenny McKay). "And if you have to pay for parking in Brisbane on top of running the car, you'll save around $108,000 in total interest payments and reduce your loan by close to 12 years, because Brisbane parking is free with CommuterXpress," he said. "It's non-stop and virtually as fast as your own car but at a weekly cost not much more than the bus and train fares," said Cr Jenny McKay. The weekly fare from Maleny or Caloundra is $150 or $130 from Landsborough. Each vehicle takes up to 12 people. The same people ride in the same vehicle to the same place at the same time every day. The commuters themselves decide the pickup and drop-off points and times

and every commuter always has a seat. Mark said, "You can work, read, chat or sleep on the way. The high back seats and side curtains and is fully approved by Queensland Department of Main Roads and Transport." "In USA and Canada around 10,000 of these services operate every work day and it's growing faster than any other form of commuting because of its economy and flexibility," said Mark. "I think every commuter should look at this as a far better alternative than commuting by private car or public transport", concluded Cr McKay. "It's low cost and environmentally friendly. It seems to me to be the only way to go."

ALENY is A TOWN rich in natural beauty and wonder, set amidst the winding Obi Obi Creek, the largest sub catchment area of the Mary River, and the rolling green hills of the dairy farms and paddocks. Just off the main road to Maleny - about 3 kilometres from the centre - sits one of the most unspoilt swimming holes on the sunshine Coast. Gardner’s Falls boasts a large natural freshwater swimming pool at the base of a waterfall, and is reached by an easy walk along the banks of the Obi Obi Creek. Cascades tumble amongst the meandering subtropical forest to the main attraction: a robust waterfall plunging into a deliciously deep, circular waterhole.

There is something truly magical about freshwater swimming. The cool water is refreshing, the surroundings are peaceful and the whole experience is more special and secluded than your average dip in the ocean. There are several picnic tables along the way or you can spread your rug on one of the large rock formations and enjoy a picnic right by the water's edge. Toilets are also available near the carpark. You can visit Gardener's Falls year round to enjoy the rock pools and rainforest setting. Access may be limited after heavy rains due to potential flooding. To get to Gardener's Falls, turn off of MalenyLandsborough Road onto Obi Lane. Follow Obi Lane for 1.5 kilometres to the end of the road and to the car parking area. From here, there is a sealed path that follows the Obi Obi for the short stroll to the falls. This is a nice gentle bush walk and is level in most areas. There are rock pools that are perfect for younger children to explore and splash about. Gardner’s Falls is definitely a gem worth discovering or revisiting. You can explore more of the region’s secret treasures at the sunshine Coast Destination website: www.visit sunshinecoast.com.au

T

HE COMMuNiTY minded spirit of Maleny is thriving at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The MNC has been providing a shared community lunch on alternate Thursdays, often using produce from our own gardens or food donated by the community. The delicious lunch usually includes several courses prepared by volunteers and is attended by as many as 70 people. The shared lunch nourishes both our bodies and spirits by creating

We are now delighted to be able to offer a one pot hot lunch on the alternate Thursdays to those in need of emergency relief and to every person in our community. Which Business structure is right for you? An important consideration to contemplate when starting a new business is the type of business structure that best suits your needs. You should consider issues of liability and how best to protect yourself and your business from liability as well as financial and practical concerns. 1. Sole Trader Assets and liabilities of the business belong to the owner of the business – you. As there is no fire wall between your personal and business assets you would be personally liable in all aspects of your business. Advantages include a simple structure to set up and maintain; you retain effective control and as you are not an employee of your business, you don’t have to make compulsory superannuation contributions, pay payroll tax or workers’ compensation. The greatest disadvantage is unlimited liability which means your personal assets are at risk should you be sued. 2. Partnerships A partnership is not a separate legal entity but rather an association of individuals or entitles which come together for the purpose of carrying on a business activity with a view to making a profit. The assets of the partnership belong to the individual partners jointly. The greatest advantage is that it is relatively easy and cheap to set up. But again the main disadvantage is the issue of the joint liability of partners. In practical terms this means that should one partner be unable to pay his or her share of a partnership debt then the remaining partner is fully liable for the whole of that debt. 3. Company A company is a separate legal entity capable of owning assets it its own name. The main advantages are that this structure has limited liability for its shareholders, it is a structure which is commercially well understood and accepted and there are many choices as to the distribution of profits and losses to the shareholders. The greatest disadvantage is that it is expensive to set up and to maintain as it requires greater accounting and accountability obligations than say a sole trader. In Conclusion As a guideline, the characteristics of a good business structure are flexibility. The structure must cope with changing circumstances with minimum consequences to the business; minimisation of exposure to liability; minimisation of costs such as tax and the efficient distribution of profits and losses.

Keeping the Heat On

A

S THE COOL FRESH AIR of winter bites, chill winds find all those gaps in your clothing and frost greets us nearly every morning, well it’s a great reminder of the importance of the wood fired heater in making life a lot more pleasant! To keep a wood fired heater operating we need firewood to burn. To have wood to burn we need to cut down trees or logs left on the ground after trees have fallen. This could and often does lead to a net loss of forest and habitat, but it need not be that way, we can grow, cut and store our own firewood to help complete the cycle and keep the fire burning sustainably. Cutting and collecting of dead wood from the forest can seem like a good idea; after all it’s dead and has no use to the forest any longer? This answer would be right if not for the fact that dead trees, logs, branches and even twigs are crucial habitat for much of our ground dwelling fauna and important nutrient recyclers. Some harvest is possible, but keep in mind that removal of woody material from the forest floor will reduce habitat. Growing trees for firewood yourself (or for sale $$$!) is a truly sustainable source of firewood and can be integrated into your land management practices. Harvestable windbreaks in

paddocks, Firewood Lots, timber plantings are all great ways of getting trees back in the landscape and providing multiple resources and benefits. Trees we have planted for firewood include Eucalypt species (Gum Trees), Acacia species (Wattle Trees) and Casuarina species (She Oaks). Some of these trees grow so fast that harvest can commence in as little as a few years with small rounds from the thinning. Some Acacia’s grow a bit too fast on the fertile soils of the range and can snap readily during strong winds, but the benefits they provide in soil improvement and rapid cover can often outweigh this down side. Eucalypts are of course fast and tough and if planted in groups can form a nice straight trunk for harvesting firewood. Casuarinas are great for multiple uses such as windbreaks, cattle fodder and of course firewood! We were also lucky enough to have a fair bit of Broad Leaf Privet (a weed that we are staging the removal of ) on our property that is great firewood that is easy to split. If this inspires you to think of growing your own firewood, contact the Brush Turkey Nursery www.brushturkey.com.au for trees, guards and friendly service. The added benefit of planting your own firewood is you get warm planting it, cutting it and of course burning it!

The Pea family...

T

HE SUNSHINE COAST has a broad range of these showy shrubs, all in the larger legume family. Many have bright yellow flowers, often tinged with red, and lend vivid colour splashes to our coastal heath plant communities. Take a walk in the Marcus High Dunes during August when the wallum wildflowers, including the peas, put on a wonderful display. Any areas of bush getting plenty of sun are likely to contain one or more species of this family. Not all have yellow flowers and a favourite is blue Hovea acutifolia. Hovea is often seen along Steve Irwin Way. It can grow to about 2m and will self-seed into the garden, providing you with regular late winter, early spring colour. Pultenaea villosa, Hairy Bush Pea, is widely available and with regular tip pruning develops into a dense rounded shrub with drooping branchlets. As with many plants in this group, flowering is in spring but the soft dense foliage is attractive all

year round. There are numerous species of Pultenaea, some with flowers in dense terminal heads, others flowering all the way up the stems. The coastal heaths are a great place to see their diversity. Oxylobium robustum (yellow flowers with a hint of red) is larger, growing to 3m. Aotus lanigera, Woolly Aotus, is about half the size. Whilst many of the pea flowers are found in sandy coastal areas they will also grow in the heavier or sometimes gravelly soils behind the coast. Jacksonia scoparia, Dogwood, favours gravelly soils and is a leafless shrub to 3m but with pendulous modified stems to take the place of leaves. Its clustered flowers are yellow sometimes marked with red. Whatever the garden style, a member of this family can be included. Alternatively, plant some on the edge of the revegetation.

Soft Leaf Buffalo Lawns with Loors Landscaping FRANZ LOORS ... landscaping the Range for the past 24 years Due to the growth in development and availability of many new soft buffalo cultivars, choosing a suitable variety for a particular application can be confusing especially when trying to find the perfect combination of practicality and aesthetics. Selective breeding has produced a wide range of cultivars each with their own gamut of performance attributes and tolerances. Some of these include colour, texture, shade tolerance, drought tolerance, wear, disease and pest resistance, maintenance levels and allergy ratings. Taking these properties into consideration whilst planning a lawned area and undertaking the necessary research, can save a lot of time and money spent on preventable maintenance or replacement. Though there are many popular soft Buffalo's available such as King's Park, Matilda,

Shade Master, Sir Walter and Palmetto, some sharing very similar properties, there is one variety that stands out amongst the crowd in terms of being the best all-rounder. This particular cultivar is SAPPHIRE. Sapphire is one of the best looking buffalo’s due to its finer leaf whilst still retaining its ‘soft to touch feel’ that soft buffalo’s are famous for. Its excellent drought tolerance, lush winter colour, shade tolerance and noticeable wear resistance completes the package. Sapphire however like most lawns is moderately fast growing and will require fairly regular mowing during the summer months. It is readily available and can be sourced from many of the turf farms over the sunshine coast. The establishment stages and care of your turf are crucial to success and longevity of a healthy lawn and will be covered more in depth in the next article.

Children will especially enjoy the giant slide along with a variety of fun stalls.

The Ananda Marga River school is set amongst an idyllic rainforest setting and Bridge Creek runs through its grounds. For 20 years, local families have been choosing the River school for its unique Neohumanistic approach to

education and learning. Our amazing Early Childhood Centre is a fantastic example of Neohumanism with its holistic approach to the education of the whole child. it will be open for tours on the day. so, come on in and meet its fantastic educators along with its resident farm animals. wonderful creative initiative created and co-ordinated by university of the sunshine Coast students to provide opportunities for students to continue to embrace their love of the performance arts regardless of the courses they are studying. Lyndsie is currently in her second year studying Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and hopes to one day open her own dance and fitness studio on the sunshine Coast, where she can also practice nutritional/dietetic advice. Lyndsie joined PAK after seeing enthusiastic fellow students from the troupe at O-Week and saw it as an opportunity to de-stress from the pressures of university with like-minded people. Though her strength and experience is in dance, Lyndsie was cast as a speaking role as Darina the vampire seductress and she is relishing it. “i wanted to expand my horizons into acting and singing as well (even if it is just in the background with my microphone turned off ),” she says with a laugh. “Dracul is my first production with PAK and i am so excited to be a part of such an amazing production working alongside such a talented bunch. i will be auditioning for every other production in the future too. They’re not getting rid of me any time soon.” Peta Beattie is director and writer of the evocative production, a re-vamped version of the gothic classic Dracula by Bram stoker. it offers a new perspective on the original story with additional characters, contemporary dance, live music, innovative staging and visuals framing the powerfully moving text. When asked why the public should support PAK and local live theatre Lyndsie responded passionately: “Get behind the hard work of the amazing cast and production team! The fact that these actors/actresses/creatives manage to balance uni, work and social life whilst bringing their unique characters to life is truly inspirational." "Plus, the audience may get to giggle as the blonde…” (speaking of herself ) “makes a complete idiot of herself slipping into a Jamaican accent, rather than Transylvanian. i know my mother will be laughing alongside them." "Dracul, despite being depicted as a horror story, is full of witty oneliners and highly provocative movements, which is sure to satisfy every audience’s needs. sexy female vamps slinking up and down the stage and the handsome male leads, what’s not to love?!”

Phil and Jennifer Holden are the new owners of Maleny Art Supplies, now located at Holden's Gallery

F YOu ARE looking for Maleny Art supplies, it is now part of Holden’s Gallery. Phil and Jennifer Holden were delighted to purchase the business and extend their range. Phil said, "in Zimbabwe we had three shops selling custom framing, art and art supplies and these commodities complement each other very well." in fact, it was the largest framing business in Zimbabwe which Phil started in 1979 and when they left in 2003, it employed 55 people. "Maleny is too small for two art supply shops and so we have had to wait until the owners of Maleny Art supplies were ready to sell to snap up the opportunity to buy their stock." "Edith-Ann Murray and Carol Keane have provided a good service to artists on the range for the last nine years. We aim not only to maintain their standard but to improve upon it. Previously some customers found it inconvenient because Maleny

Arts supplies were closed on saturdays. Holden’s Gallery are open from 10am to 4pm every day except sunday." "We are increasing the range of stock in a major way, and we shall be liaising closely with our customers to ensure that we always have what they need and plenty of it." Well known local art teacher, sonja Georgeson works at Holden's Gallery, part time. Having considerable experience, previously managing art supply shops in sydney, she is streamlining their reordering process to ensure that nothing is left out. Located on the corner of Coral and Myrtle streets, Holden's Gallery has been operating for over a decade, and focuses on quality reproductions such as gicleé prints on canvas by artists Gary Myers, Greg Postle, Robert Hagan and many others. Right now they are busy displaying the new art materials - go in and see their expanded range of stock - it has everything an artist needs.

LAY is my passion, " says Conondale potter, Kaye stephens. "i hope people find my pots a pleasure to use in their daily lives." Kaye creates, hold classes and workshops for all ages in her "Grakay Pottery" studio and gallery. On the weekend of August 16 and 17, she will open her studio like 130 other potters across Australia.

Potters are renowned for their generosity and over the weekend many potters will also invite the community to involve themselves in some serious play in their studios, with many artists offering practical demonstrations and workshops in wheel-throwing, decoration, handbuilding and firing. "i usually soda/wood fire in a selfbuilt, long-throat, bourry box kiln. Visitors to my studio will see the kiln,

new pots being prepared for firing and, if they wish, ‘have a play with clay.’" There will be opportunities galore to take home a handmade piece, direct from the maker. Ten other studios around the sunshine Coast are open from 10am to 4pm and entry to all studios is free. The event is hosted by The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA), visit www.australianceramics.com for details.

IN BRIEF:

Hot Modernism has arrived at State Library

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre receives $150,000

state Librarian Janette Wright said 'Hot Modernism: building modern Queensland 1945–75' (open until 12 October) provided an opportunity to celebrate and reflect upon our state’s colourful history and its enduring vision for Queensland living. “Prior to World War Two, Queensland architecture had a strong regional identity, influenced by climate, colonial background and frugality. After the war, people began to embrace a new optimism which led to changes in lifestyle and in turn new architecture. “informed by modernist principles, a greater connection to the world, and a desire for a new way of living, architects reevaluated the idea of sub-tropical and tropical living. it was an exciting period, and a time that can be best described as ‘hot’ — hot in design, hot in colour, and hot in debate.” Visitors to the Hot Modernism exhibition will be able to walk through a full-scale re-creation of a 1957 house, take a seat in a 1960s living room and examine 3D architectural models, original drawings and historical photographs from the time. More than just an architecture exhibition, Hot Modernism reveals the stories of the people who created, worked and lived in the buildings of this period, stories that contribute to the greater patchwork that makes up the tale of Queensland. For full program details, visit www.slq.qld.gov.au/hotmodernism

“The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will receive $150,000 in funding over the next three years to deliver more targeted services,” Member for Glass House Mr Andrew Powell said. “Neighbourhood centres are at the forefront of helping young people, individuals and families and providing a pathway to access extensive community support services. Acting President Terri Bates, said: “Maleny Neighbourhood Centre builds community resilience and is very pleased to be recognised for the work it does.” The grant will help fund the Heart of Maleny Project and say No to Family and Domestic Violence Project providing education, support and referrals culminating in the annual Event in May. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is located at 17 Bicentenary Lane (opposite Purple Palette) and open Monday to Friday 9am - 3pm, drop in for a cuppa, become a member, view our current Art in the Heart of Maleny Exhibition, have a look around the centre at our meeting rooms for rent and learn about what they do.

A new pedestrian and cycle link with scenic outdoor dining opportunities – that’s what’s on the menu via the Maleny Riverside Boardwalk project. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said work had started on stage one of the attractive timber boardwalk behind Riverside shopping Centre. “When complete, this boardwalk will provide a picturesque travel route for pedestrians and cyclists with views of Obi Obi Creek and the natural surrounds,” she said. “This project is occurring adjacent to very important habitat for platypus and council has carried out an extensive fauna assessment to ensure the impact from the project on this habitat is minimised. stage one works will include installation of footing micropiles and pouring of the decorative concrete slab. Once these are in place the structure of the 3m boardwalk timber decking and handrails will start. The boardwalk will be extended to 4m behind the restaurant to enable outdoor dining opportunities.

Hinterlanders invited to Grey Medallion course

M

ANY OLDER Australians enjoy aquatic activities and many care for their grandchildren. Our area has many backyard pools, dams, and easy access to a great variety of water environments. We are all liable to have accidents from time to time. But do we know what to do in the case of an emergency? The Grey Medallion is a Royal Life saving society Program designed for the 50+ age group that helps people to learn essential life saving and emergency care skills that could one day save family members, friends or even your life. ithaca Caloundra City Life saving Club are running the two day course for free during seniors Week at BreakFree Resort, Caloundra on August 16 and 17. “We are thrilled that the Council of The Ageing has funded this course, said Patricia Barry, one of the trainers. “Most people think that young children are the ones who are most at risk from drowning. sadly, it’s the over 50’s who are the highest risk demographic. Nearly 40% of those who drowned last year were in this age group. About half of these deaths were not on beaches, but on inland waterways. This course aims to teach people how to be emergency aware and what they can do to help in an emergency. Many people think that the Grey Medallion is a swimming course. Wrong! You don’t have to swim, or even be fit or able to swim to complete it. The free two day course covers CPR, basic First Aid, use of a Defibrillator, how to act in emergency situations on land or around the water and water safety skills. "Many older Australians care for grandchildren and many

have access to dams, pools and the beach. We cover supervision and water familiarisation for children. We also teach “dry rescueâ€? skills, that is how to help in an aquatic emergency without getting into the water. " Patricia says, "Many of us have accidents at home. We cover first aid, what to do in an emergency, CPR. The sad fact is that if we have to do CPR it’s going to be on someone we know and /or love." We aim to do lots of practical hands on experiences over the two days, so people can try out what they have learned. We are the only lifesaving club on the coast, for example, that has full sized electronic manikins that can give instantaneous helpful feedback when you practice CPR. Not only a great learning tool, but great fun to use too. “ithaca Caloundra City Life saving Club ran the course last year and places filled very quickly. Places are limited and people do need to pre-enrolâ€?, Patricia added. “We’d encourage anyone over 50 to enrol‌.the two day weekend course will be from 9am to 4pm, at Grand Pacific BreakFree Resort in Bulcock street, Caloundra. it is run by fully accredited RLss Grey Medallion Trainers, First Aid Trainers, and Life savers.â€? if you are interested in finding out more about the Grey Medallion check the website at www.caloundracity.asn.au, (where you can enrol yourself ) or phone Patricia on 0403 071 651, or email secretary@caloundracity.asn.au

CHRONIC STRESS AND ADRENAL FATIGUE Ongoing stress, whether it be structural (spine and joint problems), biochemical (digestive issues for example), or emotional, will over time deplete your adrenal glands. So ask yourself, do you have some or all of the following signs and symptoms: • poor resistance to flu and colds • fluid retention and elevated blood pressure • rise in triglycerides (leads to rise in incidence of heart disease) • in women, tired adrenals can cause and/or intensify menopausal symptoms such as headaches hot flushes, insomnia and irritability • men can also experience these symptoms as well (male andropause) • lowered libido • memory impairment • poor sleep patterns (eg get to sleep, wake up but can’t get back to sleep) • arthritic pain. All of these signs and symptoms further stress the body and the adrenals will eventually get to a stage where the glands are exhausted. This is chronic fatigue, both physically and mentally. And at this point, your coping mechanism is not healthy. I use Applied Kinesiology and a holistic approach to diagnose the causes of your adrenal fatigue and then correct them. Once the adrenals are healthy again, the ageing process slows down and as long as you maintain the improvement, your energy levels will stay high. Give me a call, I’d love to be able to help.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You

Life was meant to be easy

W

HEN MAHARASHI FIRST started teaching meditation in the western world he was met with the perception that meditation made you Wendy Rosenfeldt lethargic and unpractical. He realised that because what people had been practising was entirely different to Transcendental Meditation, it was assumed that this was the effect of all types of meditation. Maharishi always emphasied the very practical benefit of regular transcendence. Compared with the cosmos, the effectiveness of one individual is very small. Life is difficult if what we are trying to achieve is at odds with nature. It is like trying to walk upstream in a fast flowing river. However if we turn around and go in the direction of the river we go easily and effortlessly. Sometimes in life we might find it hard to know what direction to go in or even if we are heading in the right direction we may try too hard to control our journey, hanging on to the reeds on the riverbank will slow our progress. Spending a lot of time analysing what is the right path in life, setting intensions of how to be or generally just being in the head can be counterproductive to happiness. Some of the most blissful days are the days that just flow effortlessly. We are not aware of time, or of to do lists or are not mentally telling ourselves how to be. In the state of transcendence mental activity has become least. It is a state where the mind is not bound by thought. We don’t get there by thinking about it or trying to focus on the breath. Thinking about something keeps the mind active, even trying not to think about something is a thought that keeps the mind active. When the mind transcends the subtlest impulse of thought, it experiences a state of unity with the cosmos. Quantum

physics understands that at the most subtle level of nature’s functioning there is a state of unified wholeness called the Unified field. It is like a blueprint for all the laws of nature. Just as the DNA contains all the information for how the body functions, the Unified field contains all the knowledge of how the universe will unfold. Experiencing this level of life in our own awareness is like having a meeting with creation. If we are working with a group of people it makes sense to meet with them first and work out what each person is going to do to achieve the goal. In the state of transcendence we are not actually having any thoughts about what we are going to do but we are experiencing that we are connected to the universe. So then when we come out we spontaneously act in a way that is more in accord with nature and therefore get more support for our desires or plans. Instead of trying to analyse all the possible outcomes of our actions, which is impossible on the level of the thinking mind, going to the source of life and just Being allows the awareness to absorb the knowledge of the laws of nature. The process of meditating and coming out into our activity stabilises the experience of unity in our individual mind. Along with the extra energy that comes from the deep rest of Transcendental Meditation, the experience of support of nature makes it a very practical technique for success in life.

Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Teacher of Transcendental Meditation. For more information call 5499 9580 or come to a free introductory talk August 14th 11.30am and 7.30pm.

Is your brain running in default mode?

M

IND WORKS through the brain, and the brain is a piece of sacred equipment which needs to be understood and developed for the full function and capacity of the mind to find expression. In order to keep our body's operating according to our Divine Design, the brain works behind the scenes keeping our heart beating, our lungs breathing and so on. This allows us to move through our experiences unencumbered by the enormous task of running our body. The problem is our brain is recording every word and every opinion we have and this all forms the data base that presents to our consciousness what we think is free choice. Try a little experiment in mindfulness, see if you can hold your awareness steady, without automatic jumbled thoughts popping up and through the screen of your awareness

"

$

for just 5 minutes. It's not easy to do this. Mind is a beautiful tool, it brings wisdom, clarity, understanding, intuition, and with that comes the motivation and resolve to notice and move out of passive, automatic unconscious living, and to live a life with deeper meaning, purpose and satisfaction. In order for mind to function to its fullest capacity, our brain needs to learn to be quiet, to stop running on fast forward and to come out of default mode and follow directions. By practicing meditation, and by choosing our thoughts and internal dialogue, exercising the body and eating a pure clean diet, you can train your brain to be a perfect instrument for your mind to fulfill its potential, which is amazing.
