My finds across the Hinterland

A

FTER WAiTiNG three years to attend a Big Book Club, it was amusing that i did not get a chance to even turn the pages of La Rose by Louise Erdich. But listening to the discussions – i think i'll read more than one of her novels. What a weekend it was. it is impossible to fit in every scene played out when reading, into a screenplay, but Jasper Jones did not disappoint. The atmosphere was beautiful too, with the Film Society volunteers doing such a wonderful job during dinner. Last month, i managed to see Harry Potter's miniature world at Maleny's Sunday Market. What a treasure it was, Lyn. i had a lovely wander at the Artisan Market as well - and will be back to both for more soft tacos, indonesian delicacies and local produce.

Montville's Flame Hill, and would love to attend Louise King's black tie do there this month. The Maleny Music Festival, the Horizon Festival, Festival of Community Halls, Art Street Maleny, Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival, Recyclerama and Kenilworth Seniors Week are all tempting. i am sure you'll find much to entertain you through the pages in this issue. One of the highlights of the month for me was encountering one particular bibliophile on the Celebration of Books opening – Faith Baigent. Neither of us could believe that it was almost four years ago when we had swapped the helm of HT.

And we both agreed, that though Hinterland was fiction, we had definitely spotted some local characters we knew!

i took friends to our iGA, Finbars, Rosettas and Maleny Cheese. i found the latest book by Diane Gabaldon (so what if it was only her short stories - there's some in there i haven't read yet) and the Buffalo Herb and Garlic Feta. Yum!

Tune in to a hall near you! S

MALL HALLS ACROSS the region will take centre stage at the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations, as part of the Festival of Community Halls. Supported by Sunshine Coast Council, there are 27 events across 20-plus halls. Community halls are owned and operated by their communities. it is not an easy task to maintain these aging wooden buildings, engage the community and pay the bills. Festival Coordinator, Lesa Bell said, "Whether a hall prospers or not depends on the community. A lot of halls were placed in regional localities, not town centres like Maleny and Mapleton. in smaller farming areas, they may Mary Ann Law, President of Gheerulla Hall and Lesa Bell, Festival Coordinator say to come along to an event near you

not do so well as people are working away each day. "it is surprising what is going on in small halls. Volunteers are trying to have regular events for people to have things to do - tai chi, dance or yoga, often next to tennis courts encouraging people for physical activity. "They host events in order to pique interest and engage the community - but may not be able to make a profit to maintain the hall. i think that is quite a big problem." The 28 halls across the Coast are often built by locals families, built on donated land, built with volunteer labour or donated materials (such as locally felled timber) and many around are looking at 100 years old. Continued Lesa, "They were built for a purpose, that was to get people together our biggest hindrance is social media and online entertainment. "Rather than just a whole festival of events - Sunshine Coast Community Halls website is a platform of history and information on regular events that our halls run,” said Lesa. Age is no barrier. There’s something for everyone, from photographic displays, movies and fairs, to retro dances and live music. You can visit a Tramstop Festival, High Tea, rodeos or sing-a-long to the Sound of Music! Laura Vecmane loves the earth. Her art reflects this to the extent that she has created a form of expression called ‘Earth Art.’ Her media artwork "Living Earth" will be Laura’s first entry in Sculpture On The Edge art exhibition, and the HT team has a feeling there will be many more visual treats to come.

AuRA VECMANE was born in Latvia, a small but culturally rich country and feels blessed to have had such origins, but life has taken her to many other great countries and beautiful places. “Today i feel my identity is extended to one family of humanity and planet Earth is my home. i believe i am here to look after my “Home” - to do some space cleaning and gardening for future generations to come.”

When Laura was growing up she did not have many of the art and craft materials that are so readily available today. “i played in mud, sand, picked sticks and stones, leaves and flowers and studied snowflakes. “Recycling whatever was at hand was a natural way of life, which as i realise today, gave me the opportunity to practice the precious skill of imagination and invention. “i was born to be a visual person. was a fashion designer and seamstress, my grandmother was a weaver and gardener and my mum is very creative in many ways. “My grandfather had his own camera and used to take photos and that was special for the times he lived in and i think that is where my photography gene came from.” After Laura’s studies in high school and life in a beautiful, scenic and tranquil country town, her path took her to the capital of Latvia, Riga for further studies. “i did not know at first that i was meant to study art. Despite all my talents, there was a pressure coming from society and my family to study something that i could sustain myself with and gain financial security, and i chose to become an interpreter of French and English languages.” However, Laura admits that this study program “bored me to the point of depression” and she could not stay there any longer than four months. At that time Laura saw a very raw and sad side of city life living in a poor suburb of Riga. She spent countless hours travelling public transport and wondering what meaning there was to such a life. “A deep inner urge to find hope, comfort and light in a dark picture led me to study Sacred Art in the Christian Academy of Latvia. it was here that i discovered my talent in painting and began working on it every day. Laura applied to become a student of the Art Academy of Latvia and finally succeeded after

three years of trying. She gained skills in printmaking, iconography, mosaic making, photography and painting, thus becoming a multi-media visual artist, and finished her studies as the best student of the year. “i was always studying contemporary, but found myself to be an old-school soul of timeless art. Looking at many great famous artists has given me confidence not to define self just by one art media. “You can express yourself creatively in whatever way you feel like, in any given moment. As long as you practice it you will grow, and if you do your best you will succeed.” Recently Laura been playing with photography as a creative tool and is currently exploring new ways to combine New Age technology with traditional art materials to create fine art. “i believe it requires being totally present when you take a photo in order to make a photo worth taking. By doing so you also allow the creative energy to flow through you and into whatever you are capturing. “Your camera and your computer become extensions of yourself, much like a paint brush.” For an almost a year now, Laura has been a member of Forest Art Collective in Maleny. “We share a common space and the common vision of using art to connect to the community, to learn together and to inspire each other to grow. “i have deliberately used this platform to reach out through my art and invite others to take better care

of the forest ecosystems, that purify our air and water, delight our eyes, inspire our souls and are home to the beautiful native wildlife. “Out of this philosophy has grown Laura’s own attempts to create a nature- friendly form of self-expression that she calls Earth Art, using different natural materials, like garden and paper waste, flour and lime to create a sculpting mixture to mould in playful ways. “i am keen to explore and experiment and see where this creative adventure takes me.” Sculpture on the Edge is held September 29 - October 23. artsconnectinc.com.au/sculpture-edge-2017/

Three young artists acknowledged at the Obi Art Prize exhibition have had their artworks purchased by Angie Mulgrew, who appreciated the understanding and respect the children put into their work. The purchases were in support of the Obi Art Prize - Maleny Neighbourhood Centre fundraiser, and Angie then re-gifted the paintings back to the children - as a thank you for their time, creativity and generosity of spirit.

Maleny’s Ananda Marga River School. Twenty-seven students entered, ten made the final cut and four took out major awards. Alieta Belle teaches media studies, visual arts and drama at the school. “We were invited to promote the Obi Art Prize to our students. i was happy to dedicate some art classes and present themes to the children. Each worked on their individual ideas. Students who wanted to refine their work continued during the school lunch break and at home.” The criteria for artists was to positively express ‘RESPECT’ in relation to: Domestic Violence; indigenous Healing; LGBTi Communities; Refugees. “instead of discussing negative social issues i presented it

in a positive way. in relation to domestic violence i asked what a respectful, happy family would look like? “Many of our students are very aware of refugees and passionate about the subject. We discussed aspects such as people fleeing their country and their need to find a new safe place to live. We talked about how we could show these people respect. “The aboriginal healing topic was also interesting. We looked at what we value about aboriginal culture and how they looked after and respected the land before white people came. “That’s where Kieran’s work fitted in because he showed a positive image of the land. He was very focused from the beginning.” Ten-year old Kieran Reid won the Encouragement Award for his work titled The Healing Tree. it was created using coloured pencils and a black line marker. His artist statement is an expression of youthful insight.

My artwork acknowledges aboriginal wisdom and how aboriginal people looked after the land in the past and still today. My artwork is about respecting nature, the elements and the animals. The image of the fire, the two logs, the two birds and the heart represents love for family and friends. The mountains and the tree represent strength. The sun and the moon represent balance. Kieran, who wants it known that he will be 11 in August, is a creative soul who loves to immerse himself in art and music. “i like drawing about nature and the elements. i came up with this really cool idea of a big tree with branches entwining. Then i thought it would be nice to add the elements so i put in the fireplace, the waves in front and the mountains in the background. The tree represents life so to me it’s like the tree of life.” Kieran believes that working together creates a better outcome for all. “i reckon we need to respect aboriginals and their culture because they were here before us. You just can’t take someone’s land,” he said. While Kieran’s focus was on indigenous healing, 11year old Manisha Broom’s art was inspired by the subject of refugees. Manisha won the 2017 Obi Art Prize – Youth Award for her thoughtful lino cut artwork titled Courage. i was amazed and deeply moved when i viewed her entry and read the profound artist statement.

Kieran Reid was excited to accept his painting back from kind hearted Angela Mulgrew

The bird in my picture is taking flight through a storm to a safe place. I respect the courage refugees need to flee. i asked Manisha why she chose refugees as the focus for her art, a practice she describes as calming. “People don’t treat them very well and they deserve more respect. i learn about it mostly at school. One of my old teachers works with refugee kids and i just like what she does.” The prize winners were informed of their award prior to the opening of the exhibition. Manisha revealed how she received the news. “i was on a climbing holiday with my Dad at Brooyar, some place in the middle of nowhere. My Mum got a phone call and then texted Dad. i was really happy.” Sport, playing the guitar and reading, particularly about medieval times, serves as a foundation for this young person. Free thinking Manisha shared thoughts about her hope for the future of refugees. “We should give refugees a better home and treat them equally to ourselves. We have a lot of space so i think we could share that with them instead of trapping them. They’re coming from a pretty hard life so i think they should be given something better than what they get.” Second prize in the Youth category went to 10-year old Chloe Mead for her entry The Healing Field. Third prize was awarded to 8-year old ishtah Keyalr Betts with Love in Families.

Teacher Alieta Belle with River School award winning artists, Manisha and Kieran in the Art Shed

Alieta Belle describes herself as a facilitator of the artistic process. it is obvious that her student’s endeavours reflect deep understanding and compassion. “it is important to support community events such as the Obi Art Prize. it’s a great initiative with good values on a social theme. “Children have different intelligences. One of those is artistic. My role as a teacher is to create space for the students. i may give them guidance in some techniques but essentially, they all have creativity and it’s an expression. i’m interested in facilitating that freedom of expression.” As part of the Obi Art Prize, 27 singer songwriters from around the world contributed to Sing for Change. From 6pm on August 26, the Maleny Artisan Market will showcase many of those singers, profits from the bar help the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Life through Peter’s lens Imagine being in the Hitler Youth and not speaking German? Peter Erdmann has worked for the US Army, in Kings Cross and as a union boss. He's filmed interviews in his milking shed, and would love to create a co-housing project on his acreage, Gay Liddington was delighted to interview someone she calls a 91-year old Maleny icon.

by Gay Liddington

I

ENCOuNTERED Peter Storm Erdmann at Knitfest 2017 and asked if i could photograph him. He agreed but it was conditional. Peter, a passionate advocate of Maleny co-ops insisted on displaying his Maple Street Cooperative shopping bag. My memories of Peter begin in 2000. He was like a one-man welcoming committee. Whether roaming Maple Street, at the Maleny Film Society or the upfront Club, Peter would materialise, often greeting with: “Welcome, welcome! Have you heard about the wonderful Maleny co-ops?” if you had or had not heard about the ‘wonderful Maleny co-ops’ Peter would launch into his spiel just to make sure you’d not missed anything. More often than not he would be carrying his Panasonic Hi-Fi Stereo MS4 VHS camera always at the ready to film events in his beloved community. Born in Nara, Japan in 1926 Peter’s beginnings cast the die. “My parents were from Germany. Father, Alexander Erdmann, was a film-maker with generations of theatrical experience behind

him. He was experimenting with motion pictures. in 1924, the Japanese Embassy offered him a three-year contract to ‘Westernise’ the Japanese film industry. “irmgard Foss, my actress mother, went off to Hollywood and i was born after she joined my father in Japan. “When the contract came to an end we headed for Germany. During a stopover in Shanghai Father saw a distressed kitten and rescued it. He was scratched and got rabies. All their money was spent trying to save him but he died. “Mother didn’t have enough money to continue and so, i was brought up in Shanghai cared for by an amah. i was a lonely little boy. “Then the war began. i was put into an English day school and once the boys heard i was German, i got bashings. “Halfway through the war, the German Embassy asked why i wasn’t in the Hitler Youth. My mother told them i was in the Boy Scouts. She was threatened with losing her job as librarian and i was pushed into the Hitler Youth. When they learnt i couldn’t speak German i got bashings from them too.” Shanghai remained under Japanese occupation until the surrender of Japan in 1945. When the war ended Peter was employed by the uS Army and later, as Shore Patrol Photographer for the uS Navy.

Four years on, Shanghai came under Communist control. Peter worked at the Alcan aluminium factory. in spite of Communist claims of a peaceful takeover of the city Peter was aware of the atrocities, witnessing the plight of thousands of refugees. He describes this reality as frightening and surreal. “i had German papers and couldn’t get a visa for another country other than Brazil. However, i was married to a Russian lady whom i’d met in Shanghai. Her sister lived in Australia and could get a visa for us. “We emigrated to Sydney in 1959. Again, i worked for Alcan. My interest in the workers led me to become head union man for the factory of 400 workers.” Two years after Peter’s arrival in Australia his mother joined the family. She set him up in a photographic studio in Kings Cross. “There was no great purpose for photographic studios at that time and we were not making money. i came up with the idea of getting canvassers to knock on doors and take orders. it was a success.” A move to Mudgee, then Brisbane, found the family pining for wide open spaces.

“We wanted hills and plenty of woods. Maleny was suggested. i’d never heard of it but was keen to know more. in spite of the drought Maleny was green. it was magic!” For Peter, Maleny in the 70s was like discovering Shangri-La. it was a heady time when communal living was gaining ground and the idea of cooperatives flourished. “i showed movies at the showgrounds pavilion with my 16mm projector. Then became involved with the Maleny Film Society when asked to loan my projector. After that, the film society was part of my life. it was a wonderful way for people to come together.” Bringing people together has been a motivating and driving force for Peter Erdmann. Certificates of appreciation and recognition scatter the walls of his home and VHS tapes in excess of 700 hours of footage line the shelves. “it was something i just loved to do. i thought from an historical point of view it would be a good thing to have, but i’m sure people would say, here comes Peter with that bloody camera!” in 2009 Maleny’s Jess Begum created the documentary ‘Reconstructing Peter’ using excerpts of his video footage. “Maleny Film Society received funding from the Sunshine Coast Council to run an archiving workshop and the Queensland Museum loaned their conversion machine which converted the videos to DVDs. Consequently, the State Library copied all of Peter's DVDs for their archive collection,” said Jess. Peter Storm Erdmann has been described by many as one who embodies the spirit of Maleny. The self-appointed historian viewed his community through the lens and wove a tapestry of stories over three decades. He enthusiastically affirms: “This place makes me gloriously happy. There is no other town like it.” Images by Gay Liddington

Writer Dale Jacobsen recently went along to a Busy Needles morning to find 25 women gathered around tables chatting about this and that, all the while their needles clacking as if on automatic. No need to watch in case they dropped a stitch. Dale realised she could certainly learn a thing or two.

Florence Woods and Dorothea Ekert welcome knitters

Busy Needles

OF MALENY

by Dale Jacobsen

S

ixTEEN YEARS AGO, Dorothea Ekert was part of the CCC (Cuppa, Craft and Chat) group at the Baptist Church as a means of bringing together the women for a convivial morning tea. “When it folded, the Maleny Senior Citizens offered us the use of the Senior’s Verandah Room,” said Dorothea. “We’ve been meeting there once a fortnight ever since. We are now an independent arm of the Senior Citizens.” Along the side of the room, a table loaded with rugs, beanies, scarves, socks and hug-me-tights (capes with gloves incorporated) awaited distribution to those in need, such as Blackall Range Care, Salvation Army, Erowal Aged Care Facility, Maleny Hospital.

10

HiNTERLAND TiMES – AuGuST 2017

“And Prince Charles Hospital,” laughed Dorothea, “because that’s where a lot of us will end up”. They also provide beanies to a Cancer Clinic in Maroochydore. On another table at the back of the room Ronne Wildman and Bev Smith were sorting through bins of wool stock selecting yarn for their next project. “ We either purchase the wool from our fundraising or it is donated by people clearing out their cupboards,” explained Florence Woods, who featured in the July edition of Hinterland Times. Florence has been a member of the group since it began. “After the Yarn Bombing Festival is over, a lot of the pieces find their way to us to be reused.” They provide all the yarn, needles and patterns needed. People supply their busy hands. There are also “phantom knitters” who take the wool away and return with finished articles. Always keen to encourage craftwork in others, Busy Needles Maleny sponsors two categories at the Maleny Show: Hand Knitting and entries for 70 Years and Over.

Their work is on display, and for sale, at a stall at the Show. Surprisingly, Busy Needles raise a considerable amount of money from their fortnightly sessions where they hold a raffle and each person makes a donation to cover morning tea. This year, they donated $2,500 to Careflight – Australia’s most trusted rapid response critical care service. One special need is for premi babies. “We knit some very tiny baby clothes to support the parents of premi babies. Once a year, in April, Eileen Cooke comes up to Maleny to receive the goods on behalf of PiPA (Preterm infants’ Parents’ Association). They support families of infants in intensive Care units and Special Care Nurseries, both emotionally and practically. Last year, Eileen brought a photo album with her showing some of the premis now grown up to young adults. it was so rewarding to see this. Each one tells its own story.” in 2014 Dorothea’s husband, Ross, passed away, and for health reasons she had to leave her home at Witta. “i was married for sixty-two-and-a-half years to Ross who came from a dairy farming family.” She proudly announced that she has six great-grandkids. Dorothea now lives in Brisbane with her daughter, Lorraine Van den Brink, who was born and bred and went to school in Maleny. Lorraine has become part of Busy Needles and mother and daughter drive up to the meetings every fortnight. Lorraine has assembled three albums of all the articles and events of the group. A valuable social historical resource. i asked Dorothea if she considered herself the leader of the group, to which she replied, “Sort of, but we are really a co-operative”, which seems appropriate for Maleny. in 2009, her work, “helping the needy across Queensland”, was recognised with a Fisher Community Australia Day Award. Busy Needles meet every second Thursday at Verandah Room, Senior Citizens Rooms, Maleny Community Centre. Contact: Florence on 5494 2115 or Dorothea on 3349 8969. This access is noted on the individual’s file as well information about the name of the lender and the amount applied for. However the credit report does not record the success or otherwise of the individual’s credit application nor will the Privacy Act allow the recording of any other personal information such as political affiliations, religious beliefs, criminal history, medical history and sexual preferences. Default information able to be noted on the credit report concerns situations where a payment has been outstanding for more than 60 days, whether an individual is bankrupt, when a cheque for more than $100 has been dishonoured twice and when, in the opinion of the lender, the individual has committed a serious credit infringement such as acting fraudulently. So how can you access a copy of your credit report? This can be done by simply contacting the credit reporting agency and requesting that a copy be made available. If a charge is requested for a copy of the report a complaint can be made to the Privacy Commissioner. What if inaccurate information is noted on a person’s credit report? The first step should be to contact the lender who listed the inaccurate information and ask that the listing be removed or amended within a reasonable time. 24 hours may not be an unreasonable timeframe where the error means that another lender would refuse a loan and therefore possibly risk a contract being terminated. If the lender refuses to amend the error then the next port of call would be to write a complaint to the credit reporting agency and request that they investigate the complaint. The credit reporting agency would then be obliged to put a notation next to the error noting that the matter is under investigation. The final step, should the credit agency not correct the error once the investigations have been carried out, is to formally apply to the Privacy Commissioner for the error to be investigated.

The music combines human voice with the sounds of endangered and extinct animals. Linsey Pollak uses breath, lip pressure and fingering to play real animal calls, while Lizzie O'Keefe weaves her voice in and out of this musical landscape of animal sounds. These 30-minute performances evoke an emotional connection and response to the sometimes “hard to swallow” facts about the current Sixth Extinction Crisis, inspiring understanding, love and hopefully action. it’s a song for the planet - an inter-species choral work, and they’re singing for their lives! if their calls don’t affect you then nothing will. Edible masterpieces

E

AT OuR ART is an opportunity for our local food hubs to be involved in the spirit of Maleny Art Street, September 1-3, by creating their very own edible masterpiece. We want to challenge the common perception of ‘art’ as being something to be looked at on a wall. Art should involve all of our senses and nothing makes our brains more excited than something we can smell and taste! Each food venue is encouraged to put their creative aprons on and produce an edible item, be it sweet, savoury or slurpable, to be served throughout the weekend. With Maleny Art Street and Maleny Music Festival being celebrated together this year – what better way to showcase Maleny’s finest art, music and food! Come take a walk around town and EAT OuR ART! More than 450 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers who were judged across 38 categories. The nationally recognised, independently-judged awards are the only ones in Australia where the judging criteria is determined and ranked by consumers. An independent team of trained judges anonymously visit the venues to determine the winners and scores are based on the entire dining experience, from food to the customer service. ANKiNG AND FiNANCE is not always the most scintillating of conversations, but with the closing of not one, but two banks in Maleny in the space of months, we thought it was time to evaluate what options there were for locals who wish to bank in their own town. Since notices of closure of Suncorp and ANZ in Maleny, Bob Malcolm, Maleny Credit union CEO said they are receiving more enquiry. "Changing financial institutions is much easier than it used to be," Bob said, "but there is still a process that people go through. We will certainly do our best to ensure that the transfer process to Maleny Credit union is as smooth as possible. "At present, our business banking offering is limited, however, this will change over the coming period as we introduce merchant banking facilities and other business banking products.”

MCu are also planning changes to improve their product range, "We have had solid growth over the past couple of years - the future for MCu is looking great." Meanwhile Sam Archer from Bank of Queensland is now the joint Owner-Manager BOQ Buderim and sees a very bright future for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. "Customers in Maleny and the surrounding hinterland area can be reassured that BOQ Maleny and its ATM remains

open to service your day-to-day banking needs," said Sam. "We will continue to work closely with the banking specialists at BOQ Maleny who are available to support your regular transactional needs, while for more complex matters such as the purchase of a new home, i’d like to encourage customers to contact us to make an appointment, so that we can meet with you at the BOQ Maleny branch, or at a location more convenient to you." Mid-August, sees the opening of the new ANZ Mobile Lending office at Banksia House in Maple Street. “We have been helping customers in this area for the past 12 years and my intention is to continue to build our presence in the Maleny area and be more available to customers all over the Hinterland," said Jacques Fayolle, owner of the independently-owned franchise. Jacques and his team of eight pride themselves on banking the old fashioned way with great personalised service, "We assist customers with complex loan situations, multiple properties, selfemployed income, business and family trust incomes, and even pensions from overseas sets us apart – we do this type of lending everyday and we know how to help.” So if you are planning changes with your bank - look local, we've three excellent options and all in our Maple Street, Maleny!

Recyclerama i

T SEEMS EVERYONE is into it - we now love recycling so much, its almost a race, when over 10 years ago it was all a bit taboo.

time

The Gen Y bought it back in vogue with their trendy mix of old and new fashion styling and now it’s on for young and old. i remember the day my sister and mother would have squirmed at the thought of wearing or buying second-hand items. Now they’ve joined the gang of passionate op shoppers heading out in search of treasure. There has been a definite shift in our culture, one often inspired by those who don't want to wear something at a time when possibly your entire social circle has a similar outfit.

On August 12, you'll never know what canny find you'll pick up at Recyclerama! Image Jody Gilchrist

Flea markets, vintage markets and car boot sales are a great way to find original items and outfits for decent prices. Recyclerama is now in its third year and for the next year has four shows lined up at the Maleny Showgrounds. This fun event has had great success in bringing together a huge variety of antiques and collectables, vintage and retro, jewellery and fashion, artifacts and bric-a-brac. And by combining it with a car boot site, you get the best of everything. Special mention goes to the fashionistas - find vintage wedding dresses or one of the largest collections of fashion from the 20s to the 80s in the Main Hall. Cross Country Tours in Brisbane are bringing up coaches, but book early, as places go quickly. Another great thing about Recyclerama is its cent auction drawn four times daily, and there are over 40 prizes to be won. Gates open at 7.30am August 12 at the Maleny Showgrounds, www.facebook.com/recyclerama/ or call 0410 511 635.

PON SEMi-RETiREMENT, Jeff and Vera Kruse made the decision to downsize and move to Maleny from their acreage property in Mapleton. “Maleny has a relaxed, friendly and healthy energy, something that only a country town can provide and for that we are grateful in the otherwise crazy world we all live,” said Jeff, although he he still misses their horses, dogs and cattle! Jeff was a banker for 33 years, his only job, until 2003 when an opportunity to purchase a car wash in Caloundra presented itself to him and Vera. “We knew nothing about the industry,” says Jeff, “but learned quickly and ran a successful business for the next seven years.” The couple both came from rural backgrounds in Australia and Papua New Guinea, and always had a vision to live in, “our own piece of paradise”. Having visited the Sunshine Coast on many occasions over the years, they just knew - “the Hinterland was in our destiny”.

Jeff and Vera Kruse encourage other newcomers to the district to book your tickets for Lion’s Welcome Dinner

Welcome Dinner a warm introduction The couple found and purchased 30 acres of land just outside Mapleton. “This is where we developed and built our ‘dream’ home, including extensive gardens, a passion we both enjoyed and still do,” Jeff shares. “The property was named HARTLEY in honour of my father.” The pair enjoyed rural life with their animals. making many lifelong friends along the way, a deciding factor for staying on the Range when relocating in 2016. “We enjoy our gardens, play more golf on the new

Maleny course, plus pursue our lifelong passion spending time on the sea sailing,” smiles Jeff. Last September, Jeff and Vera attended the Maleny and District Welcome Dinner, as guests of Ray White Realty Maleny, Principal Melinda Martin. He said, “Along with the hospitality, meeting and listening to a good cross section of the local community, the dinner was a great introduction to the town, which confirmed our earlier decision to settle in Maleny.”

Hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions, and catered for by the Orangery, the 12th annual Welcome Dinner is on September 20 at the Maleny Showground Pavilion. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased from Maleny Art Direct and Maleny Optical. For further information please contact Rob Hobson on 5499 9704 or 0418 785 967.

Life in early Palmwoods

G

E O R G E FEWTRELL was a very active community man, described in obituaries on his death in 1914 as the ‘Father of Palmwoods’. With his wife Elise, they were original Palmwoods settlers. The family had always known some of their stories, and their great grandson, Terry Fewtrell, set out to discover much more and to tell their stories in the context of the times. These stories include Elise’s tragic earlier life on the courageous journey from Schleswig-Holstein; the town’s role in the early citrus industry, and how opening up of land for yeoman farmers like George contributed to dispossession of the Aboriginal people. ‘George, Elise and a mandarin – Identity in early Australia’, recreates life in early Palmwoods. It was George’s custom to gather the family on Sundays for a roast dinner at Homestead 4171, on the side of the hill, looking east across the valley towards Woombye. They were events of some occasion. He would wear his coat and sit at the head of the table. As was typical of the times, it was a very patriarchal

north by foot enjoyed the hospitality and the meal received at the Fewtrell home”. George was the man of the house. Had he remained in Shropshire he may have continued to be a seasonal worker, or perhaps a senior farm labourer on a particular property, for a hopefully kind master. However, now he was the farmer in control of his own land, a role to which realistically he could not have aspired in Shropshire. He would have reflected with some pride on the progress of his community, and his role in its development would have given him great satisfaction. Elise also had reason to feel satisfied and probably somewhat surprised that, despite her four years of unremitting trauma and sadness, she too had survived and was now content in her new home, surrounded by four children of her own. Family, her first priority in life, was safe and nurtured.

T

HE GREEKS SAiD iT SuCCiNCTLY: the system of tyranny is only as good as the worst man who can become a tyrant. Step forward, Peter Craig Dutton, Master of the universe. Well perhaps not yet, but he’s getting there, he’s working on it. We are told by his acquaintances (his friends are harder to find) that Dutton is effective, focused, energetic and determined. Some also describe him as a good and decent man. The latter is at least debatable, but what is beyond argument is that Dutton is ruthless, authoritarian and totally ambitious. This may be a recipe for gaining power, but it is not a safe place from which to wield it. He already has a history of overreach, of ignoring the accepted standards when and where it suits him. This is more than making silly jokes about the water lapping over Pacific islands in international forums or even verballing Manus island asylum seekers as paedophiles; it goes to a mind set in which anything goes if it pursues his demands, the end always justifies the means. Which means that promoting him way beyond his talents and abilities is a reckless and dangerous move from our normally cautious Prime Minister. So that being the case, there must be a compelling, even irresistible, reason for Malcolm Turnbull to invent a new super department in what he boasts is the biggest change to the security system in forty years and use it to enthrone the former Queensland narc not only as his Home Affairs supremo but as a leadership contender, a candidate for the neoconservatives when and if they finally despair of their former hero, Tony Abbott. But as far as we know there isn’t; the announcement came after just about everyone who was consulted (and there weren’t very many even of these) advised against it. Turnbull’s sole justification seems to be that we, or at least he, cannot stand still; like sharks, we have to keep moving to survive. The proposal for an over-riding super-ministry has been canvassed many times and has been kyboshed by two Prime Ministers – Kevin Rudd and even Tony Abbott, no bleeding heart when it comes to security matters. But Turnbull insists that it now urgent, so urgent that absolutely no details of just what the move will actually entail have actually been worked out. There have been constant reminders of the threat of terrorist attacks in Australia, and of the rare instances when they have occurred. in what can now be seen as an overture the main theme, Turnbull mentioned Man Haron Monis and the Martin Place siege while posing with a totalitarian backdrop of what appeared to be a couple of sinister looking commandos in gas masks beside an armoured naval vessel; it is not entirely clear how they would have been useful in the Lindt Café, but presumably it was about enhancing the breathless air of crisis he was bolstering. indeed, nothing about the ballyhoo is very clear. Even The Australian’s Greg Sheridan, who loves a good security beat up, was sceptical.

Sheridan’s obsessions can be erratic, but the man knows his spooks; he has spent most of his working life immersing himself in their company. So when he says that all the major agencies as well as most of the cabinet were against the inauguration of Dutton’s empire, we can take his word for it. Of course there may be some self-interest involved; some will not relish their previously well defined ponds being subsumed into a greater and more amorphous lake. But the argument that separate ministers with responsibilities that co-operate independently will provide a better result than mono-cultural group think is hard to counter, the more so if the minister is Dutton, a bully who has shown little interest in alternative points of view. Another objection is that Dutton is apparently to remain as immigration Minister as well; if he is fully occupied with security, he will hardly find the time for such trivial pursuits. But in practice there will be no real change: ever since he has assumed his border security uniform Dutton and his equally belligerent departmental head, Michael Pezzullo have regarded immigration as something of a sideline, an issue to be resisted, obviously, but hardly relevant to the real war. They inveigh ceaselessly against asylum seekers who arrive by boat as illegal (they are not) but are happy to ignore the real illegals, the tens of thousands of those who overstay their visas and simply disappear into society – much as the boat people did before they were incarcerated in their off-shore prison camps. The real economic and social issues about immigration will just have to continue to muddle along on their own. So there is no convincing explanation of why Turnbull has done what he has done: bluster about agility and innovation and spurious comparisons with other regimes in other countries can be dismissed as the waffle they are. Which leaves us to the cynical but inevitable conclusion that it is a captain’s pick, a move to ensure Dutton remains onside as our current leader’s chief protector and enforcer against the right wing warriors in the party room and outside it. This is certainly the overwhelming view of the commentariat. There has been almost universal puzzlement, criticism and rejection, even by those, like Sheridan, who are happy to push the security barrow to its limits and beyond when it suits them. And the threatening cloud of Peter Dutton, rising ever larger in the political sky, does not reassure the doubters. The public is not, to put it mildly, ready for Dutton; his polling figures are abysmal. The idea of him advancing still further seems absurd. But then, the idea of the Turnbull – the apostle of the sensible centre – conferring such overweening authority on a right wing zealot who would not hesitate to topple him if the occasion arose seems pretty silly also. The Greeks had something to say about that too: those whom the Gods seek to destroy they first make mad. But that advice may be too late for Malcolm Turnbull. And there is no point in trying to explain it to Peter Two Planks Dutton. it is all Greek to him. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

Everybody’s Son

Under The Same Sky

The Secret of Black Rock

By Thrity Umrigar

By Mojgan Shamsalipoor & Milad Jafari

by Joe Todd-Stanton

A neglected and abandoned 9-year-old boy, adopted by a powerful family, grows up to fulfil his potential, only to be confronted with a secret which will cast his entire sense of self into question. umrigar casts her magic on this powerhouse of a novel about the abuse of power, white privilege, grief and misplaced sentiment. She makes her unlikable characters feel so utterly human that you resonate with them as much as with her likeable characters. The book makes some hard choices and yet leaves a sense of judgment suspended. With crystal clear prose, umrigar looks to the place where cultures clash and intersect, where need and desire engage with morality. An intriguing tale of race and identity, of love and integrity, of seeking truth and then having to cope with what one finds, Everybody’s Son merits a spot on everybody’s reading list.

Seeking refuge, after years of abuse in iran, Mojgan fled with her brother to Australia. After time in Christmas island, Darwin and Brisbane detention centres, Mojgan was allowed to go to school and live in the community. She met and fell in love with Milad, an Australian permanent resident, who had come to Australia with his family before the tide turned on refugees. Her refugee status has been denied and with it her chance to live a normal life with her husband. To return to iran would mean prison, torture or death. Serena from Rosetta’s attended an event with Mojgan. She is much like any other young woman, except for the fact that she has faced serious abuse in iran and now faces the inhumanity of a government that is deaf to the plight of refugees. Please help support Mojgan at #freemojgan

An engrossing story of an intrepid child, this stunning graphic novel for younger readers is a winner on many levels. Erin Pike, a fisherwoman’s daughter, is eager to unlock the local legend of Black Rock, which some say, “never stays in the same place and... could smash a boat to pieces.” After stowing away on her mum’s boat, she is stranded and discovers the rock is a live creature and home to an abundance of sea life. it’s a story that succeeds both as a daring adventure and as a reminder that our own living habitat needs to be treated with care. The illustrations are dazzling and vibrantly hued, the rich palette just right for the resplendent undersea scenes that adroitly float young readers’ sense of magic just under the surface of the mundane.

ELL, WHO KNOWS what the weather will be like when you are reading this, but at the end of July it looks like spring is well and truly upon us. Trees and shrubs are covered in new growth, the grass is starting to green up and birds are starting to collect nest! if this weather keeps up, it looks like spring is off to a very early start - a little too early perhaps. Regardless of your opinion about the climate change debate, if there is one certain thing about climate change, it’s that the climate does change. The weather doesn’t really care whether you do or do not believe in climate change, it’s rather presumptuous that we regard belief as even being a factor – but then again that’s humans for you! The native ecosystems of the range are a text that can tell us about the variability of our climate, if only we can read them. it’s not just soil type that influences plant growth; climate is a major factor. For example, prolonged dry periods can lead to a drop in soil moisture and the water table. We have rainforest communities on the range, such as Kondalilla Falls National Park, Triunia National Park and the upper Mooloolah Conservation Park that are full of rare and unusual dry rainforest plants that have the ability to survive during dry

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193

periods. Decade after decade of wet weather could see these forests change to a forest type more reminiscent of Mary Cairncross, but these remnants listed contain species that can tolerate periodic dry spells that might only occur a decade or even century apart. Variation in climate has a direct effect on the dominance of certain individual plants and plant communities. Variation in climate effects the germination of plants and also the growth of both juvenile and mature species. During the last ice age 10,000 years ago the local climate was much drier and cooler. The fossil record suggests that there was less rainforest on the range than there is now and that the area was dominated by windswept grassland and open eucalypt forest. it is suggested that it was only in the moister south facing gullies and slopes that the rainforests held on. What does all of this have to with me, i hear you ask? Well not much really ... other than give some thought to what you are planting in your revegetation patch. The rainforests of the range are not a homogenous entity with the same old trees and shrubs, in every remnant. We should give thought to what we are planting and where, so that we maintain ecological integrity and establish vegetation that can survive the variability of our climate.

Maintenance

A

uGuST iS DEFiNiTELY the month to get on top of any as yet incomplete maintenance tasks. Established trees with good root systems have often continued to grow through the winter months but the weed growth has slowed. Small showers of rain have generally kept the grass looking green but cold nights and low rainfall have certainly reduced the usually rampant growth of most of the local weed species. What a relief! unfortunately, our wildlife which loves to dig for roots and worms, is concentrating its activity in well mulched areas, mostly around young trees, where the soil is still moist. Creative deterrents include horizontal chicken wire pegged down or held with rocks and fallen bunya branches (they don’t apparently like the prickles). Longer days and spring growth bring rising sap so watch your young trees for stripped bark due to wallabies

and hares. Tall guards or temporary wrapping with light wire will help. Whatever you use, air must be able to circulate around the stems. Trapped moisture will result in rotting bark. We love our wildlife but tolerance has its limits.

Keep up with the pruning in your wildlife friendly garden but if the shrubs are already in flower, leave it until after flowering. Otherwise a season’s flowers are lost. Early pruning of quite small plants gives a bushy habit and more flowers. Just remove the growing tips. For larger shrubs, prune back at least to new growth. Dense groundcovers like Scaevola (Fairy Fan–flower) are beginning to bloom, and this one needs little maintenance. The species with small blue flowers is much longer lived than the large blue, pink and white cultivars. Barung always emphasises the value of mulch in retaining soil moisture and now is a good time to top it up; despite the wildlife. it is after all, our dry season. it’s also very pleasant working outside in the clear warmish days of late winter.

Beerburrum Quarry expansion proposal

A

LOCAL RESiDENT, Aziz Marley, contacted HT concerned about the proposal for the expansion of the Beerburrum Quarry. Aziz said he was unaware of the 40-year-old quarry as it is wasn't active and is surrounded by forestry plantations; he reports it was not identified through regular searches for purchasing properties by local residents. He says the Beerburrum town hall meeting on July 20 2017 was poorly attended, as many people didn't get the letter until after the meeting. "i bought peace and tranquillity, not having a quarry. Won't it devalue my property? Why did Council allow development to happen so close to a quarry?" He is worried about the quarry's close proximity to Mt Beerburrum and that decision-makers don't live in the area. "There are only 400 people living in Beerburrum - it won't increase the business, just traffic." Barro Group Queensland General Manager, ian Ridoutt, stated there were 12 houses in the 1200m range, and the total site of the proposal was for 23 hectares. The group applied for tender in late 2014 and applied to council in November 2016. Since then they have conducted investigations into traffic, pavement impact analysis, cultural heritage, stormwater, bushfire, ecology, vulnerable and endangered species and more.

They plan to include Caretaker premises, which Mr Ridoutt hopes will reduce the risk of bushfires and illegal activities (cars have been dumped and torched there). He also explains that blasting will be less frequent and not happening every day. He says quarry products are used for local infrastructure - housing, roads, schools - all for the benefit of the community. MP Andrew Powell has told residents, "Whilst the ultimate decision resides with Council, you (and other residents) have rightly identified that probably the most significant impact will be truck movements. “Normally the State Government agencies, including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, are consulted by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council when making these decisions and i would assume this is occurring. "i have taken the additional step of writing on your behalf to Minister Miles, the Acting Minister for Main Roads, to ensure he and his department are being consulted and that the community’s views are being considered, and continue to represent your concerns with Council." Submissions were open for or against the development from July 6 to 27. Council will be reviewing the submissions and a decision is likely to be made by the end of August.

OW, iT’S BEEN Liquidambar city for me lately, as any of you following me on the book of faces and instagram will have realised. if you’re not following me, do so now. The problem with this species is that they carry so many structural faults, that are really obvious now that they are bare, and get quite large, and then fail. Some of the ones i have been climbing have been quite scary, and behaved unpredictably when cut, due to concealed pockets of decay. if they hadn’t been pruned this year i’m certain they would have failed next year judging by the way they responded to the pruning cuts. The very fibres that make up the timber

make them prune to failure in storms, even if the trees themselves are structurally perfect. For these, and other reasons, i strongly recommend getting your liquidambars assessed for safety if they pose a threat to infrastructure. i just pruned four large ones next to a driveway in preparation for the installation of Root Barrier, because the roots had started to lift the bitumen. if you keep them pruned and regularly assessed they can be an attractive feature in the garden. Those of you who know me know that i prefer endemic species, but there is nothing endemic that gives those lovely russet hues.

medical marijuana:

Y

Ou WiLL HAVE heard about the legislative changes that allow Queensland doctors to prescribe medicinal cannabis. This has created a perception of easy access to cannabis products. Although there may be a place for the drug in the treatment of certain conditions, things are not as easy as they seem. The big problem is that medicinal cannabis has not been tested properly. We don’t know enough about how effective it is as a medical treatment and what the longer-term side effects are on body and mind including tolerance and dependence. There are many immediate side effects such as confusion, hallucinations, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, diarrhoea, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting. Current limited scientific evidence suggests that medicinal cannabis may be suitable to treat severe muscular spasms and other symptoms of multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting,

severe seizures, and certain problems during end-of-life care. For these conditions treatment via a doctor or scientific research program may be approved if conventional treatments have not been successful. The application process is lengthy and the medications need to be imported from overseas. Medicinal cannabis is not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) so the treatment may not be cheap. Smoking marijuana is not recommended as it exposes the body to harmful carcinogens and may cause chest infections. Remember it is still illegal to home-grow cannabis and to drive after using cannabis. We really need more research to be able to give better advice about when cannabis may be useful. People who use recreational marijuana to reduce stress are advised to talk to their doctor about healthier ways to manage stress, anxiety or mood problems.

HE EMERGENCY RELiEF Program at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has been running for a number of years now. Said Centre Coordinator, Nooreen Harris, “The common misperception is that Maleny is a prosperous area and there are hardly any vulnerable people or families. The number of clients presenting at the Centre are a stark reminder this is not the case. “This year so far we have given assistance to over 300 adults and over 180 children, of either food, fuel vouchers, iGA vouchers, swags, blankets, and any other little luxuries such as toiletries packs. Last year, 2016, 700 vulnerable adults were assisted.” Over the years Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has collaborated with local organisations to assist in bolstering their ER Program budget. Organisations hold events to fundraise for the Centre or in the case of Maleny iGA, customers can chose to nominate MNC in the Community Benefit Club. Community groups are choosing to assist in various ways, such as collecting feminine products and making up

a small purse pack or toiletries pack for MNC volunteers to hand out to clients. Other organisations donate towards fuel vouchers. Transport is always an issue and the $20 fuel vouchers have had to be rationed for emergencies only, making it extremely difficult for clients. “All donations are tax deductible as Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is a registered Charity,” said Noreen. if your organisation or community group would like support the Emergency Relief Program please contact the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on (07) 5499 9345. CCORDiNG TO VEDiC knowledge, Pragyaparadha is the root cause of all disease and unhappiness. Wendy Rosenfeldt Pragyaparadha refers to the loss of memory of the unity of life and the identification with the diversity of creation. By forgetting the source of life and chasing fulfilment through the senses one makes short term decisions that lead to poor health and dissatisfaction. Consoling your self with a box of chocolates or polishing off a bottle of wine may bring short term gratification but longer term only serves to increase your sense of discontent. Pragyaparadha both predisposes one to poor lifestyle choices and undermines the natural intelligence of the body. The worse we feel, the less in tune we are with what our body needs and the more we are looking for gratification from outside ourselves. Addictions are a classic example as we start to crave and actually need particular substances or behaviour to feel better although they are damaging to our well-being. if you are identifying with this scenario you are not alone. until we are in a state of enlightenment there is still some trace of Pragyaparadha so this mistaken thinking is a universal phenomenon. Pragyaparadha is present on every level of life; from cancer cells in our body forgetting that they are part of a whole and destroying their life force to the short sighted way we treat the planet which is our life force. Aside from poor health and

environmental destruction, Pragyaparadha has broader and perhaps more abstract implications. The world we see is in fact a grand illusion, the ever changing surface of life arises from a hidden field of nonchange. Quantum physicists recognise that there is a unified field that is the source of life and understand that what we perceive as solid objects are nothing but fluctuations of particles. Material creation is an illusion created by our senses and interpretations. Our physiology is a complex flux of vibrations emanating from a field of pure intelligence or consciousness. Yet instead of treating disease or unhappiness from this level the general tendency is to treat the surface level of the problem. Modern medicine specialises in ways to cut bits off, turn off receptors and generally disturb our natural intelligence. This is like treating the leaves of a plant while ignoring the roots. Vedic knowledge works by enlivening our innate intelligence on all levels. Herbal preparations act like tunning forks to reset the proper functioning of our bodies while technologies of consciousness such as Transcendental Meditation connect the individual consciousness with the intelligence of the universal consciousness. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

A new clarity

W

E ASK OuRSELVES questions all the time. in fact we ask so many that the conscious mind barely even notices them anymore. in fact not only do we ask questions, we are also constantly fed ideas and information from the world around us. All of this would be profoundly useful if we were paying attention to and choosing what’s going on inside our minds. The problem is that often the information that influences us so profoundly is sourced from a very narrow range of references yet its impact on so many aspects of our well being can be enormous. We can get lazy or busy or too trusting of those who we suppose have our best interests at heart and so just accept changes that creep into our lives and that are not healthy for us and which often can be avoidable. Take for instance the issue of Smart Meters. Much research has been done on the detrimental effects to our health and well being after the installation of these meters. Have you investigated these? and what of the latest research about fluoride in our drinking water? What of the intended raising of the 4 G frequency to 5 G? Have you investigated the latest research about the cancer causing influence of many of

our cosmetics, hair dyes etc? Have you read the latest findings about chemotherapy and its possible influence on promoting cancer cell growth? Are you aware of how mobile phones, iPads, laptops, etc affect you and your children's health? Are you aware of how changing your diet to a more healthy unprocessed offering to your body can positively influence not only your physical health but also your moods and your mental clarity? Are you aware of all the inspiring, courageous, wonderful people who are contributing research, information and effort to making the world a safer better place for us all? Can you sense that part of yourself that is starting to open up, to yearn for greater meaning and a better quality of everyday life? Engage with it, give it expression, listen to your mind and your heart for in the combination of the two, you will find a new clarity. Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. Do you have diabetes? i

N PEOPLE WiTH DiABETES, blood glucose levels are higher than normal because the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly. The body needs insulin to turn the food we eat into energy.

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage diabetes

Exercise helps

Maleny Neighborhood Centre

For a person with diabetes, exercise helps insulin to work better, which will improve your diabetes management. Other advantages are weight control, it lowers your blood pressure, reduces your risk of heart disease and stress. ideally, aim for about 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day. if this is not possible, then this time can be divided in 3 x 10 minutes sessions. You should still be able to talk as you exercise without becoming breathless. Some hints if you have diabetes: ● Drink extra fluid before, during (only if prolonged exercise) and after exercise to avoid dehydration. The fluid may be water or a sweetened drink if extra carbohydrate is required. 250 ml every 15 minutes or one litre of fluid per hour is recommended. ● Take care of your feet when exercising. ● Wear comfortable and well-fitting shoes. ● Always inspect your feet before and after exercise. ● ulcers or other lesions on the feet are a serious danger for people with diabetes. it is important to avoid foot damage especially for middle-aged and elderly people ● Take extra carbohydrate before and during exercise to prevent hypoglycaemia. Extra carbohydrate is often needed after exercise. Discuss adjusting carbohydrate intake with your doctor or dietitian. ● Monitor your blood glucose levels before, if possible during (at least initially), and after exercise to assess your requirements for extra food. ● it may be necessary to reduce your insulin dose prior to exercise. insulin adjustment varies with each individual. Discuss appropriate adjustments to suit your exercise schedule with your doctor. ● Wear sun block when exercising outdoors. Call Tim and Mary Barshaw at Maleny Physiotherapy to advise you on exercise to help with your diabetes.

Did you know that... Healthy Homewares is home to a wonderful café, serving organic tea and coffee, cold pressed juices and healthy treats.

It is open 7 days a week, from 9am – 4pm. Our expert attendants, Elise and Tenille, take great delight in preparing fresh sushi and cooking up delicacies for you daily. Their coffee is “to die for”.

There is plenty of seating for groups and bus tours and you can always take your coffee down the elevator to the garden centre, if you prefer.
