Peace on Earth F
ROM WORMS TO whales, our December HT celebrates Christmas and all that is good in the world. In the stories this month, one community group have made it their business to welcome refugees, other residents celebrate peace and challenge themselves on an Eastern European trek. War torn lands and peoples are also remembered at the Christmas Tree Festival. Then there's an 'everyday' Santa and his wife, who devote themselves to giving comfort to children and families living with cancer. We cover a local multi-media artist who doesn't sleep much, and has been granted the honour of cocreating the Sunshine Coast Australia Day trophies. It is not too late to nominate your local hero for an award. It's great news on the Maleny Pool it must be what happens when there is harmony between tiers of government. Festive celebrations are listed in our Shop Local Gift Guide and see our What's On page for more. Kids, we have holiday ideas for you, including a story on a lovely bit of history and generosity in Maleny's Cooke Park. Pick up a book - the

Finally In the Swim!
T
HE CAMPAIGN for a new indoor aquatic centre at Maleny has received a huge boost with news the Queensland Education Minister has given the nod for it to be built at the Maleny State School. Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) has stated that the Indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre steering committee's efforts are focused primarily on provision of a venue where children can not only learn to swim, but become strong swimmers. The hydrotherapy pool will also include a learn to swim pool. “I and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council have long supported residents' calls for a new indoor aquatic centre in Maleny - one that allowed all year use and better catered for our growing number of local competitive swimmers", Councillor Jenny McKay said. Similarly, State Member Andrew Powell has long been campaigning for improved set down and pick up facilities for the children of Maleny State School.

“So when - in conjunction with staff from Council, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Education - we found a design that ticked all the boxes and delivered both a new aquatic centre and 'drop n go' we got pretty excited," Mr Powell said.

HE YEAR 5 WHALE PROJECT at the Ananda Marga River School has recently undertaken the ambitious task of building a life size model of a baby whale. This idea was the brain child of the students themselves as part of their term's unit project on Migration. The River School called upon its wonderful community to make this happen, and with the help of many volunteers including their groundskeeper, cleaner, art teacher and parents who offered materials, time and a variety of skills to the project, the baby whale has been brought to life. Keep an eye out for the creation at this year's Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Carnival on Friday, December 9. Look out for beards too - the beard competition will benefit the Maleny Hospital, and HT was told it was all about the "length and depth" - so keep growing those whiskers.
The agreement is contingent on more detailed traffic management designs, flood management and connectivity to the school proper being finalised but all of that work can now commence with the in-principle approval.
Ananda Marga River School Year 5 students and their whale creation will take part in the Maleny Christmas Festival parade
“Jenny and I still have plenty of work to do. I need to now work with TMR to prepare detailed traffic designs – designs that Jenny will need as she expedites the matter of land tenure”, said Mr Powell.

School choirs will converge for carols at the Riverside Centre, you'll see buskers, free face painting, petting zoo, stalls, Santa photos, and great food. End the night with a big musical concert that culminates with Whiskey and Me in the Community Centre - there'll be a lot of lovely music happening in there. Make sure you buy your mega raffle tickets - there are seven prize packages from 20 local businesses, with the proceeds of the raffles for Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to support local families who need a little help this Christmas.
"And of course, the fundraising from all levels of government and the community needs to start in earnest. I'm excited that we are at this stage. For the first time in years, we now have a site we can all agree on. And with a bit more hard work we will be able to turn the community's vision in to reality", Cr McKay concluded.

Gail McMahon, Hilary and Erin Cameron with Marlis, their fabulous host in Krapina, Croatia
“It was accidental actually,” Erin’s mother, Hilary smiles. “A friend of mine who has a disabled child said, ‘Let’s do this!’ so we booked, and then they couldn’t go; so I asked another friend to join us. I was quite ambivalent at first, but it turned out to be a fabulous experience.” The European Peace Walk takes trekkers across six countries, linking Vienna to Trieste. The countries on the walk have endured years of bloodshed and anguish, but now ‘perpetual peace’ has been achieved; so the borders are
E
RIN CAMERON IS WELL-KNOWN in Maleny. She is a friendly, affectionate young woman who also faces many physical and other challenges. With the encouragement and support of her family, she has made her way through Maleny High School and now enjoys various music, drama and literacy groups during the week. Erin also attends the award winning Compass Institute, which runs programs at the Compass Farm, and in the Wabi Sabi shop in Palmwoods, as well as arts and crafts projects, and Aikido, a non-aggressive martial art. So, with all this activity, what inspired Erin to take part in the European Peace Walk?
The Peace Walk booklet was a great incentive - Erin always looked forward to getting her stamps along the way

more relaxed and people are free to roam across Europe again. “We flew to Vienna and caught the train to Hungary,” Hilary shares. “We would be travelling through Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and Slovakia, key areas in the first and second world wars. “In fact, one lady we stayed with said, ‘You wake up and wonder what country you’ll be in today’ as the borders keep changing.” Erin needs plenty of exercise and training to keep at an optimum level of functional fitness. “We knew this walk meant travelling 25-30 kilometres a day, so we were out training every weekend,” Hilary says. “Along Mary Cairncross, into Maleny, big loops. The only trouble was whenever we walked through Maleny, especially past the IGA, Erin would see people she knew and stop for hugs and chats – so it took us much longer than expected!” The perseverance paid off on the walk, “I was concerned that it might be too tough for Erin, but we managed to cover up to 30 kilometres a day – and if we were exhausted we would take transport to the next check point.” Hilary’s friend, Gail McMahon, was the third member of the team and she had her own challenges. “Gail has type 1 diabetes, so she had to be very aware of the food she ate along the way. Also, it was critical for health reasons that she didn’t get any blisters, and she managed just fine.” The walk itself is a visual treasure, with an ever-changing landscape. “We walked through vineyards and fields filled with wildflowers; we saw castles and remote hamlets;
beautiful lakes and dusty lanes framed with trees full of fresh fruit.” Picking plums as sustenance became a popular pastime. “Erin loved the walk. We had walked a 250km section of El Camino in Spain in 2011, walking 10-15km a day, so this was a big step up for her. And for me, I’m an old woman!” laughs Hilary. “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to walk that much, but we trekked over 400km and we enjoyed it!” The three women travelled light, carrying only 7 kilos each in their backpacks. “You stay with hosts along the way,” Hilary says, “There is very little accommodation. Small villages open up their town halls for guests to sleep in. “You also have to walk within certain dates, so the hosts can coordinate with each other and prepare food supplies in advance. “The hosts would feed us so well: strudel, icecream, pancakes, goulash, packed lunches with huge slabs of bread with cheese and salami. We lost no weight!” Hilary grins. “Another positive is that you visit these remote villages and you think, this is great, I’m bringing money to where they really need it.” Along the way, Erin enjoyed following the red arrows which signalled the direction for the walk; these would be on walls, roads and telegraph poles. Hilary feels very privileged that she, Erin and Gail have taken part in this walk. “You’re walking through towns and villages, seeing crumbling old buildings and monuments to history; then the track will suddenly change and you go through places and landscapes you didn’t know existed. “One day we came upon a Croatian choir in traditional clothes, singing, it was wonderful.” Hilary also noted that there were reminders of injustice along the way. “Arriving in Vienna and seeing the grandiosity of Belvedere Palace, you can understand the sense of inequality and how wars can be connected to that. “The opulence of these palaces compared to the little villages with 3-4 rooms was confronting and sobering.” Along the way, Erin, Hilary and Gail made some good friends. “A month after we returned we had a gathering of European Peace Walk people from South East Queensland. We swapped tales and gave hints to people who are planning to do it next year.” So, would the three women recommend this walk?
The EPW route
Lake Bled
“Absolutely. You need to be fit, but look at us, we managed it with age, diabetes and disabilities factored in. “It’s given me a new respect for our bodies and what they can do, and Erin and Gail are so proud of their achievements – and rightly so.” For more information of the European Peace Walk, visit: www.peacewalk.eu For information of the work of The Compass Institute, visit: http://www.compassinc.org.au/

Full circle:
Tohm Hajncl
Father of two, Tohm Hajncl lives "halfway down the hill, between Palmwoods and Montville" and has just been selected, with award-winning ceramic artist Kari, to design the 2017 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards trophies. Artist, landscaper, wine maker and teller of tall tales, Tohm credits his career path to one book!
W
HEN ASKED WHAT drives him, Tohm Hajncl said it was the “art side of things”. He co-owned (with his wife at the time) a gallery in Montville in 2000 called Corrugated Arts and had work exhibited at Peace Of Green in Maleny for a few years. He specialised in assemblage - wall mounted, sculptured pieces and furniture made from reclaimed materials.. “I've been a junk collector since early teens - I loved to get old materials and make them into something new. “I really tried to make it as a full-time artist. When that proved unsustainable, I realised that landscaping gave me a creative and practical outlet..” Amber Leaf Landscaping has been running in Palmwoods for the last ten years, with five full time landscapers.
Local multimedia artist, Tohm Hajncl, and award-winning ceramic artist, Kari, have been selected to design the 2017 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards trophy
“I set out years ago to make a name for myself as an expert in horticulture and landscaping,” said Tohm, who applied himself to his blog and newspaper articles. But when it came to structuring articles and speeches, Tohm said, “I wasn't particularly good, and my presence on stage was not great. “I joined Toastmasters in Maleny to get that focus, and it has been incredibly successful.” He said Toastmasters improved the structure of his articles, adding pathos, a self-deprecating humour, a strong opening and conclusion. “When I put them together, all these made nice little stories: rather than being just a sales pitch. “It bounced back to Toastmasters - the more I practised on structure in my articles, the more it benefited my Toastmasters talks.” So successful, Tohm has been donned Toastmaster of the Year for the last three years, won Tall Tales Competitions (“because I can take the story to new heights!”) and he is now an invited speaker at the Queensland Garden Expo!

He said his involvement in the Expo started by accident. “Maleny garden expert, Colin Campbell used to be on Gardening Australia. I was talking to him at a stand called the Plant Clinic, where you bring your gardening problems. He was busy and the next person turned up and thought I was another expert. I then spent 3/4 hour answering questions!” That's when Tohm knew he could do it - he is now the designer and construction co-ordinator of the Giant Kitchen Garden, but he does still “hang out” at the Plant Clinic. In fact Tohm is well qualified for the task - not only does he have a horticultural certificate, he has one in communications electronics and a textile design degree! He loves cooking and sewing, “I've made hundreds of garments and did design work for Country Road in the early 90s.” His skill set was shaped by the influence of one book, The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. “I read it when I was 13 years old, and thought I've got to learn to everything I could to survive post holocaust life - mechanics, electronics, horticulture - all things useful after society collapses. “So when I went into adulthood - I had a wide range of skills available to me.” Nowadays, the list includes home renovation and wine making. “I've made my own wine for the last 22 years, and use whatever fruit locally. Strawberries, mulberries, pineapple, star fruit … jaboticaba makes fantastic wine and is one of main wine fruits in Brazil. They ripen all at once but with mulberries you need to pick some every day.” Last season he picked 45 kg of mulberries - “that 's a lot of wine!” said Tohm. “I was given 100kg of lychees - that made some pretty nice wine.” The hobby is just for him and his friend's consumption, “I do talks for purely for people want to make wine at home it's not seriously technical - but I make something very palatable.” It is his love of wood and that childhood survival to recycle, that we'll see in the trophies. Each will feature a ceramic piece mounted on a timber and metal stand, hand crafted from reclaimed Woodford Festival clay, local timbers with local leaf designs printed on the ceramic. “I've known Kari for years,” said Tohm, “She came up with the idea - we'd been talking about a collaboration for a while.” He said locality and connection to place were the key ideas behind this concept. Kari specialises in high-fired, quality ceramic pieces with environmental themes. Kari's just had second firing of the ceramics, and Tohm's salvaged timbers have all come from the Sunshine Coast.

For Tohm, it is an accolade that his creative talent has been recognised, he is proud to have been chosen to create the design that will not only be a trophy, but a work of art for the Australia Day award recipients. “These special individuals and community groups are paving the way, forging a path, and the award trophies will be reflective of a gentle pathway forged across local landscape.” If you know a person, community group or organisation worthy of an award, categories include citizenship, seniors, community group, environment, creative and sport. Nominations close on December 9, 2016. Nominate online or collect entry kits from customer service centres and libraries.

An exciting grassroots initiative for Sunshine Coast Hinterland communities is taking shape - the Hinterland Poetry Trail project. With Council approval to move to the final art creation and installation stage, it has the potential to be part of the Sunshine Coast 50-year naming celebrations in 2017. One member shares the group’s vision of bringing poetry to the people.

UDITH BANDIDT is a Palmwoods local, Lyn Browne comes from Maleny and Deanne Lister is a coastal girl from Wurtulla. Together they form part of the Pente Poets, a group of five poets who have been meeting every month on the range for over ten years. They share lunch, lots of laughter, good food and wine – and serious poetry critiquing. “We’ve published three anthologies over the last ten years,” Judith says. ”The Hinterland is a place we love, and have found much inspiration for our writing up here.” Judith returned from a holiday in New Zealand in 2014 full of enthusiasm after seeing a haiku pathway in a little town called Kati Kati in the Bay of Plenty, and that experience gave the Pente Poets the initial inspiration for a Sunshine Coast poetry trail, Hinterland to Headland. “Our vision to establish a poetry trail for the Sunshine Coast would mean linking a number of poetry pathways or individual sites across the region,” Judith explains..
Susie Faint with the three poetry trail poets, Deanne Lister, Lyn Browne, Judith Bandidt at the Hinterland to Headland poetry reading in the Maroochy Botanic Gardens
“At each site, poems would be embedded in the landscape in a manner that would enable a natural synergy to be created between the arts and the environment.” The group did a series of poetry readings under the Hinterland to Headland title in January this year, as a ‘proof of concept’ – one at Yandina, one at Mary Cairncross on the butterfly deck, one in the Maroochy Botanic Gardens and one at Alexandra Headlands.

worms
It is a comfort to find so many people in the Hinterland who are passionate about our planet, and are actively doing something about improving, or saving it. Two such people are Pene Mitchell and Paul Harrey, Palmwoods residents who champion the lowly worm. Victoria McGuin went to learn more at their home-based worm farm.

R PAUL HARREY and Dr Penelope Mitchell are sustainability advocates, and rather than just talk the talk, they embody it. Their home is the hub for Worms Downunder, which manufactures worm farms, composting systems and supplies vermiculture products throughout Australia. So how did this begin? “Paul and I met at a conference on eco-design in Japan. I’m an environmental architect and he is an industrial designer. We spent some time in the UK, but it was here that we began with worms!” Pene explains.
“We were living in Brisbane about ten years ago, tag teaming with part-time work, raising our kids, and renovating an old Queenslander. We wanted to deal with our own waste, and a friend gave us a container of worms. “We pulled out the old sink, and that became a worm farm; then the old bath came out for a worm farm too… “We would go to the markets and ask for organic waste for our worms. The market owners said, ‘Take it! We have to pay to get rid of it!’ so we saw an opportunity.” The family moved to the Sunshine Coast and, with a decent amount of land and a large shed/workshop, Paul started designing worm farms and composters. “We received a government grant which helped to build two prototypes of our aerobic composter ‘OSCA’,” says Pene. Because it aerates the compost every hour or more, things break down very fast.

“Put a chicken carcass in there and within a day you can’t tell what it is. Within 10-14 days everything is composted.” In fact, the Sunshine Coast Airport is now the proud owner of the first solar powered OSCA (On-Site Composting Apparatus), which deals with all the food waste, cardboard and paper used at the airport. The resulting compost is used on the grounds and gardens. This machine is believed to be the world’s first commercial solar-powered composter, an outstanding achievement and a proud feather in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’s cap. Paul considered the local environment before creating OSCA. “I thought about the natural elements of where we live and designed something that was powered by the sun and used a salt water battery.” Keeping things local is also important to this couple. “We like to support Australian industries, and locals, so we build everything here,” Pene tells me. “There are only a few things we can’t source here, like gearboxes, which are
brought in from Italy and assembled in Australia. Paul and Dan build the composters with Bob, a local welder.” Dan Latham has been working with Pene and Paul for two years, and as a qualified engineer he relishes the opportunity to work on such innovative designs. I peer over the verandah from the house and see an area of tented garden beds and various large enclosed bins. “These are our worm farms,” Pene says. “Some are fed purely organic matter, some we feed other matter to see how long it takes them to break it down.” Worms Downunder grow and supply worms, worm castings, and worm cast extract to anyone who needs some health injected into their soil. ”The worm cast extract is a liquid concentrate achieved by extracting all the biology, minerals and nutrients from the castings into liquid form, which you can use on pastures, veggie patches and flowers,” Paul shares. “Woombye Snakes Football Club used our worm liquid last year and the feedback has been great,” Pene tells me. “They saw the first worms in their soil for seven years, and this year they haven’t had to replace their turf, which many sports fields have to do.” Their passion to reduce waste and carbon emissions has led the couple to make smaller “bite size” OSCAs, for schools, cafes and homes. And their worm habitats can be found all over Australia and even in places like Italy, New Zealand and French Polynesia. “We have an OSCA system in a new inner city development in Darwin, which also has ‘green’ walls, edible gardens, a Barramundi lake, an organic café, and their own power. It is so good to see something positive like this happening in the city.” Unsurprisingly, the couple have won a heap of environment and sustainability awards, but remain down-toearth and modest about their achievements. “We just like spreading the word,” Pene smiles. “We go and visit schools and share our ideas, teach the children how easy
Right: Bulk waste is easily managed with the Worm Habitat Grande
it is to do this. And it’s great when you have teachers and parents involved who are passionate about this too.” Paul, Pene and Dan show me the OSCA prototype and the new ‘Worm Habitat Grande’ – perfect for large amounts of farm and manure waste or sports club grass clippings. “We’d like to see all organic waste recycled eventually,” says Paul. “That would reduce landfill by over 50%, which would also mean less methane emissions and ground water contamination.” I’m impressed by Pene and Paul’s dedication and care they have clearly had enough of this planet suffering and are doing something about it. The worm has turned. To find out more, visit www.wormsdownunder.com.au

The Williamson's granddaughter and instigator of the Pillowcase project, Brittany Booth at 16
Pillowcases bring comfort to children with cancer The essence of Christmas for many is about family, gift giving and of course Santa. In speaking with Neil Andison of Maleny, writer Gay Liddington gained a glimpse of a real-life Santa in our midst.
by Gay Liddington
N
Children’s Hospital. Brittany made 120 pillowcases in six months. “Within three weeks of them being delivered to the children’s oncology ward, Pillowcases for Oncology Kids was born. The reaction from patients, parents and staff was mind-blowing. They realised the importance of this simple idea, said Neil. Backed by her mother Tabitha, Brittany inadvertently began a journey that would bring joy and healing to countless families. A Facebook page was created and within a few weeks there was a representative in every state of Australia. Such an endeavour takes commitment, time and money. Jane explained the process while showing me their spare bedroom stacked with brightly coloured pillowslips. “They are standard pillowcase size, handmade and 100 percent cotton. Patterns vary appealing to boys, girls, babies through to teenagers. There are themed pillowcases for Christmas, Easter and Halloween. Winter ones are made from flannelette. “People either post or deliver the pillowcases they’ve made. We then launder, iron and package each one into cellophane bags ready for distribution. “Di Wilkins of Palmwoods has made and donated over 3000 pillowcases. She is the biggest individual maker and
EIL AND HIS WIFE Jane Williamson are the grandparents of Brittany Booth, and Queensland representatives of Pillowcases for Oncology Kids. This is a not-for-profit organisation that began in 2011. However, Neil tells how the seeds were sown many years before. “Pillowcases really began when Brittany was diagnosed with cancer‌ rare germ cell tumours, when she was six months old. Less than one percent chance of survival was given. “The first three years of Brittany’s life were virtually spent in Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital.â€? Fast forward to a 14-year old Brittany at high school. The Home Economics teacher invited project ideas in line with learning to use a sewing machine. The teenager remembered those early days of hospital treatment. In particular, the gift of a special pillowcase made of patterned fabric - a navy blue background dotted with red cherries. Neil continues,“Brittany was one year old and the pillowcase was her security blanket. It became an integral part of her treatment regime. “Learning to sew on a machine provided the spark for Brittany who told her mum that she wanted to make pillowcases for the kids in Westmead

supporter of Pillowcases Australia wide.” Community support is integral to an enterprise such this and the Maleny community is no different. Neil explains, “Early in the piece I approached the Maleny Commercial Laundry for support as we only had tank water. Without hesitation, owners Paul and Di Wilson said they would wash the pillowcases at no charge. “Their staff also volunteered to press them. They are processed to the point where we do a final iron and package them.” Maleny Lion’s Club, local quilters group and individuals have contributed to make sure that children receive their special pillowcase. Fort Knox Storage in Caloundra donated packing boxes. “We process, pack and deliver four times a year to the Children’s Health Foundation in Brisbane. They distribute the pillowcases to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. On average, I deliver 480 to the hospital every three months,” said Neil beaming a smile. The primary aim of Pillowcases for Oncology Kids is for each child undergoing treatment for cancer and their siblings to receive a pillowcase each time they go to hospital. Siblings were added into the equation a couple of years ago when Brittany recognised that they are often lost in the upheaval of the medical process. “To date, over 25,000 pillowcases have been made and distributed throughout Australia. Five thousand of these were sent overseas including Christchurch, New Zealand after the 2011 earthquake. Brittany decided that all the kids in hospital should receive a pillowcase,” shared Neil. Anecdotes related to the Pillowcases for Oncology Kids experience tell of healing for both the donors and recipients: A memorial service at Mt Tambourine for a six-year-old boy whose pillowcases were prized possessions. Tabitha and Brittany travelled from Nowra, attending by invitation of the family.
Three hundred dollars was raised by a Mackay family who asked for donations instead of birthday presents for their four-year-old son. A Gympie quilters group who met to make pillowcases forged friendships amid tears, laughter and stories of life. Eleven years ago, Neil Andison sporting his forreal Santa beard, volunteered to don the red suit for Barung Landcare. Since that time, his ho, ho, ho, has been heard at Maleny Market, the RSL Club and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre where he will again share his Christmas cheer at this year’s community breakfast. Brittany Booth recently celebrated her 20th birthday in spite of the odds. “Brittany works at three jobs. She has been overseas twice and is planning another trip next year. Her health checks are ongoing but she makes the most of every day. “What Brittany has achieved proved to me that one person can make a difference. She made that difference and other people have taken up the baton,” said Neil proudly. Pillowcases for Oncology Kids receives no funding and relies on donations to assist with costs. If you would like to make pillowcases or donate, please email Jane and Neil.

This list is impressive and includes Nolan’s Private Selection Steaks, lamb, pork and ham from Barry Family Butchers in Beerwah, seafood from PFD in Palmwoods, chicken and eggs from Mountain View Poultry in Beerburrum and lettuce from Ironbark Hydroponics in Woodford. “Everything we serve is fresh. There is no ‘packet to pan’ in any of our meals.” says Steve, “Our chefs get in well before the Bistro opens each day to start the food preparation.” From pizza bases to sauces, everything is made from scratch using nothing but the freshest ingredients. Come in and try the famous Beerwah chicken parmigiana. The chicken breasts are from Mountain View Poultry in Beerburrum. After a light crumb and

AYFIELD PATISSERIE and Chocolates in Montville is renowned for high quality, original, sweet creations, but now they are reaching the same delectable heights with their savouries recognised as best in Queensland. Their chef, Bryan Kelly, won two golds and a silver award in the Queensland Gourmet Sausage Roll Competition. The chicken, mushroom and cheese sausage roll and the lamb and feta both took the gold, with the beef and vegetable winning silver. All three look generous, and delicious, with a new creamy cauliflower and cheese option for vegetarians. Bryan himself has over thirty years’ experience in making fine chocolates and pastries. “I don’t use recipes, it’s all from my own head; I just blend flavours together.” He brings over a new dessert, with blood

orange bavarois, vanilla bean, apricot puree and pistachio nuts. I ask what it’s called. “I don’t know yet,” Bryan grins. Traditional deserts are also on the menu, such as the hugely popular apple strudel, but Bryan enjoys surprising people with his creations the most, “I like it when people say, ‘Oh wow, I’ve never seen that.’” The national Gourmet Sausage Roll Competition is an extension of the 25-year-old Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition, and Bryan’s scrumptious offerings resulted in Mayfield Patisserie being the only Queensland establishment to win awards for all their sausage rolls – he also won second and third prize nationally. So, it’s time to take your taste buds for a treat, and enjoy the stunning view while you’re there – but form an orderly queue behind me, please.
N THE FIRST DAY of Christmas, my true love said to me, Montville is the place to be. Main Street, Montville, is boasting the wonderful unique banners showcasing designs from our budding little artists at Montville State School. Our Lucky Shopper competition is in full swing with lots of local businesses participating. Make sure you come early with your Christmas list. Look for the colourful posters in Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton when you are out and about Christmas shopping. The first Lucky Shopper draw happens during the Festive Tree Lighting Event. The second draw, with thousands of dollars of vouchers to give away, will take place during the Carols on the Green, December 21. Businesses have been donating vouchers, which include giftware, artisan goods, boutique items, menswear, shoes, dining options, sweet temptations, photography courses, wine, homewares, landscaping and accommodation. The joy of Christmas will also live on into the New Year in Montville, where you will find plenty of businesses open from Boxing Day! From December 26, a local business will be featured each day in a social media competition and you could be a winner. Promoted on Sea Fm, Facebook and Instagram, each participating business will have something special to share on one of the 12 days. ‘Like’ Montville Chamber of Commerce on Facebook and Instagram to find out in which shops you need to stop and selfie snap. Participating businesses include The Opal Cutter, Elements at Montville, Illume Creations, The Clock Shop, IGA Montville, Art, Antiques and Antlers Mapleton. Make your shopping trips festive and fun by visiting our unique shops, boutiques and galleries. Stop for a coffee and treats to relish. Experience the joy of Montville today.

HINTERLAND TIMES – DECEMBER 2016
‘Welcome to Maleny’ is a team of dedicated people who decided they wanted to make a difference to refugees and people seeking asylum, by making them feel truly welcome.
“O
UR GROUP BEGAN with Lisa McDonald, who was a teacher on Nauru for 18 months and is still affected by the experience, explained member Cheryl Laizans. “She wanted to make a contribution, no matter how small, and found many like-minded locals who also wanted to help. “I married a refugee from the Second World War and lived for a number of years with his family and socialised in that community, so I understand from a very personal point of view the trauma, the losses, the difficulties of adjusting to a new strange world. After four months of liaising with Brisbane-based refugee settlement agency, MDA, ‘Welcome to Maleny’ arranged for a bus to bring a group of nine refugee families, numbering 35 men, women and children to visit Maleny for the day. Now living on the north side of Brisbane these refugee families have all recently come to live in Australia after fleeing their homelands of Syria and Iraq. The visit began at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre with a traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. Following this moving and powerful welcome, local youth marimba band, Mumbo Jumbo, struck up their joyful, upbeat melodies. “Some of us started playing games, others participated in art and craft activities, a few learnt a bit of guitar and marimba. For lunch they all sat down together and shared a delicious and extensive feast prepared by members of ‘Welcome to Maleny’, and afterwards the bus took the visitors to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.
“We walked in small groups throughout the forest and spotted pademelons, brush turkeys and other birds, butterflies and flying foxes,â€? Cheryl shared. “They were delighted and thrilled by the opportunity.â€? In the final moments of the visit, gifts of prayer flags that had been made by the Maleny community, and local native plants were presented to each family. “When it was time for our visitors to go it was obvious friendships had formed and deep connections had been made. We all agreed we should do this again and again‌‌ and we most certainly plan to!â€? Cheryl smiled. The team would like to acknowledge and thank all involved for their generosity, compassion and support to the team, the refugees and people seeking asylum. ‘Welcome to Maleny’ is under the auspices of Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, 17 Bicentennial Lane, ph: 5499 9345.

Maleny Rotary's successful Melbourne Cup lunch at Maleny Manor fundraised $3500 each to the Blackall Range Care Group and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The Rotary Club of Maleny raises funds to be able to give back, in support of local and international community projects. For the third year running they are inviting applications for grants of up to $1000 from not-forprofit community groups and organisations in the Maleny and Montville environs that run, manage, conduct or implement programs or projects benefiting local communities. Last year, the Community Grants program provided a total of $8340 to 14 community groups. Here are Juliett, Judah and Xavier enjoying the new furnishings in the Dramatic Play Area at the C & K Maleny Community Kindergarten. A major refurbishment of the Dramatic Play Area was funded by a $970 grant from the Rotary Club in the 2016 program. Enquiries and application forms can be obtained from secretary.maleny@rotary9600.org or phone 5494 2561. The closing date is January 29, 2017 and those approved for funding will be notified by the end of February.
Have you noticed the 60km speed limit all the way from Mapleton to Montville? Previously, the road between Montville and Maleny varied between 70km to 90km with a short section at 60km near the Maleny Cheese Factory turnoff. QLD Transport and Main Roads representatives visited a recent Montville Commerce meeting, and said the technical assessment for the decision considers function - that this road is some business, but mainly residential; traffic volume and prevailing speed; road characteristics and crash history - they cited 15 over five years, 2007-2012. Members of Montville Commerce stated that "this is not a residential street, this is a thoroughfare". They were concerned that people were driving down the range instead of to Maleny; that the frustration was likely to cause accidents instead of preventing them and that: "Supercheap Auto was going to run out of brake pads, because you were riding them the whole time"! Over 100 residents and business owners submitted their responses to the Montville Commerce survey. Results are being finalised and Queensland Transport and Main Roads officers will consider issues early in December.
TS Centaur Australian Navy Cadets will conclude a very successful year with their Annual Presentation Parade on December 11. HROUGHOUT DECEMBER and January you can decide whether you want to be a hero or a villain through the annual Summer Reading Club at your local Sunshine Coast Council library. Led by the State Library of Queensland, in partnership with the Australian Library and Information Association and other state and public libraries, the Australian Summer Reading Club is an annual program that aims to encourage a continued love of reading and ongoing multi-literacy skills development among children and young people during the summer holidays.
Wedding Venues Pomodoras on Obi A complete package of “real” food, boutique beverages, unspoilt water and treetop views, award winning local bridal services & luxury onsite cabin accommodation. “Escape to the mountains and discover the magic.” One stop wedding destination in the heart of Maleny. phone: (07) 5429 6543 email: info@pomodoras.com.au www.pomodoras.com.au
To join the Summer Reading Club fun, children simply need to read five items of their choice over the summer holidays – this includes books, magazines, comics and ebooks. Then they complete the reading log and hand it in to your local library by 5pm Monday, January 16, 2017 – it’s that easy! Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said last year more than 41,000 children and young people across Australia participated in the Summer Reading Club reading more than 260,000 books. “My grandchildren will be definitely joining the growing Summer Reading Club community that is reaching across Australia,” Cr McKay said. “This Summer’s Club is packed full of adventurous things – everything about super powers, dastardly villains and flying heroes.” Check www.summerreadingclub.org.au to find out about the prizes to be won and activities including creating stories, meeting a celebrity author online and much more. There will also be mystery prizes and other incentives along the way with winners to be notified at the end of January 2017. It is easy to enter - just register in person at any Sunshine Coast Library or Mobile Library, or complete the online registration form at https://library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ or call 5475 8989.

OOKE PARK NESTLES in the heart of Maleny. It is where children play, friends meet and people gather to catch the bus. In season, a flame tree sheds its spent flowers onto paths while a plaque on the fence pays homage to the park’s history. The plaque reads: This park was dedicated by all the children of the late A.C.K. & A.M. Cooke as a tribute to the memory of their parents. Embedded in the town’s pathways and buildings are the stories of pioneers such as the Cooke family. Dairy farmer Alfred Charles King Cooke, his wife Ada Margaret and children settled in Maleny in the early 1900s. The family played a primary role in the town’s development. Granddaughter Margaret Thompson (nee Cooke), resident of Witta shared her memories and family history. “In 1909, Granddad built a house in Maple Street for his family and named it ‘Rosedale’. Later, it was converted to a guest house and is now known as Maleny Lodge. “When I was a little girl I would visit Granddad on a Saturday morning. He would sit on the verandah of ‘Rosedale’ guarding his foot. He had gout and was terrified of bumping it. “He owned that land where Cooke Park is now situated and also the block next to it which he donated to the community for an ambulance station. Around 1910 Alfred Cooke became the licensee of Maleny Hotel. “If he hadn’t taken over the hotel they would have lost their license. He also built the cattle saleyards which were

After the esteemed A.C.K Cooke died in 1946 the family donated a block of land in Maple Street to the community. A park was created in honour of their parents. In 2009, Sunshine Coast Regional Council implemented a streetscape upgrade in Maleny. This included work on the Cooke Park frontage adding to the charm of the playground

E ARE THRILLED that once again, Kendall and Brydie, the famous mother and daughter duo will be our features artists for both December and January,” gallery director Joan Page told us. “We have just returned from a whirlwind trip to China to organize the manufacture of our joint homewares range called Kendall and Miss Brydie,” Kendall told us. “It was full on with eighteen hour days but really worthwhile. The range will include doona covers, aprons, cushions, placemats, dinner sets and handbags. Brydie is currently designing a set of melamine plates, bowls and mugs for young children.” “I’m planning a trip to Japan next year to further my studies and research. It means I’ll have to put my University course on hold for a while so that I can put all my energy into painting and developing new ideas and designs for the Kendall and Miss Brydie range.” Brydie added. “When does the big move to Mapleton take place? “we asked. “We are hoping to start building the house in February” Kendall replied. The studio/workshop is already completed but the house plans are still awaiting Council approval.” “I can’t wait to move there,” said Brydie. The bush setting is beautiful and inspiring. There is an abundance of flora and fauna I am really looking forward to painting. It will be wonderful living on acres away from the noise and distractions of suburbia.” Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street Montville opposite the Village Green. Please note we close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day only. Kendall and Brydie’s paintings are featured on the gallery website: www.montvilleartgallery.com.au

N JULY 2016, the Hinterland Times interviewed Flaxton resident Syd Kirkby MBE, a man who has explored more of Antarctica than any other Australian. Dr Lynette Finch wrote a biography on his explorations, Fixing Antarctica - Mapping the Frozen South, with a striking front cover of Syd looking into the distance surrounded by frozen tundra. The image is actually a photorealistic painting in oils by self-taught Australian artist, Tom Macbeth. A previous resident of Eumundi, Tom now lives in Brisbane and is currently painting a portrait of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The Hinterland Times would like congratulate Tom as a 2016 Black Swan Portraiture Prize winner - he received the $7,500 Amana Living People's Choice Prize for one of his portraits of Syd. Tom’s Facebook page recently stated, ”Thrilled to be chosen as a finalist for this year’s Black Swan Prize for portraiture with my portrait of Syd Kirkby entitled The Trailblazer. A great guy who I'm pleased to be able to call a friend. Deserves more recognition as one of Australia's greatest explorers.” We asked Syd what it was like to sit for Tom. “It was beaut, to sit and yarn away. A pleasant way to spend a few hours. He’s an interesting fella.” How long did it take to complete? “It took him about five months,” Syd replied. “He puts in huge amounts of time.” For more information on Tom’s art, visit Tom Macbeth Art on Facebook or www.macbethart.com

Artists: enter a NEW ART PRIZE in Maleny
T
HE OBI ART PRIZE is a national art prize encouraging artists to inspire positive social change through their creative expression. The Obi Art Prize releases a new theme each year. Artists for this next submission round must focus their work on the 2017 theme of Respect. It’s relatively easy to express what respect ‘isn’t’, but the Art Prize states that the artists must take up the challenge to express what respect ‘is’. There are four social areas for artists to focus upon: Indigenous healing, LGBT issues, domestic violence and refugees. The Obi Art Prize has opened for submissions with a total prize pool for 2017 of $7000. Artists, universities, colleges, community centres, and social groups working with artists or working around these issues, are invited to submit work in our efforts to engage and inspire the community, and effect social change. The Obi Art Prize calls on artists across the country to submit a current artwork that positively reflects the 2017 theme of Respect in one of the four social areas.
A National Themed Art Awards 2017
Submissions will close on March 31, 2017 with the first selections announced in June 2017. Guest artists and judges are part of the weekend exhibition: July 8-9 includes Jandamarra Cadd – indigenous artist and winner of the People’s Choice Award for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016; David Paulson - awardwinning artist, and Steve Kilbey – artist and musician (The Church). The Art Prize is an initiative inspired by the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and is used to fund community projects for the Centre.

DEFAMATION - BEWARE Defamation concerns the public communication of words, gestures, images or acts that are likely to lower the esteem of the person to whom such communication is targeted. The Queensland Defamation Act of 2005 applies to defamatory information published on or after 1 January 2006. For a message to be defamatory it must be communicated in some way and the Act has defined such methods of communicating as:
Woodford Folk Festival's spectacular Sunrise Ceremony
A celebration of expression at Woodford Folk Festival
W
oodford folk festival is australia’s largest annual not-for-profit arts and music festival of its kind, gathering together more than 2000 artists, musicians and presenters in more than 400 acts, across 25 venues to an est. audience of 120,000 people. celebrating its 31st year, the festival showcases the depth and diversity of australia’s cultural, artistic and social expression with music, dance, cabaret, circus, comedy, workshops, debate, street theatre, films, forums, visual arts, an entire children's festival and many special presentations, including a spectacular fire event on new Year’s day. the overall vision is to encourage an inclusive and creative community, which fosters the growth of cultures and traditions through generations and is expressed through story and ceremony. this is exemplified by the large-scale spectacle theatre at the Welcome ceremony, and the festival’s flagship closing ceremony, the fire event. the programme features international artists and
speakers and some of australia’s national icons along with emerging artists. indeed, Woodford has received a strong reputation internationally as an important event for emerging artists from australia and overseas. this year memetica’s very own giant theatrical puppet maker, daniele Poidomani, will be working towards the creation of 14 puppets in collaboration with QUt’s creative industries students. these wonders will roam the festival in the evenings and star in both the opening ceremony and finale. indonesian expert arief rabik will instigate the first Woodford bamboo forest, as well as train staff in preservation techniques and fertilising using biochar technologies and making use of our waste water. our food and beverage stalls will showcase 15 specialty bars and 66 of our stalls are carefully selected food venues and restaurants. each ‘meeting spot’ promotes items that feature a diverse pallet of international cuisine, sure to satisfy our eclectic festival patrons.
•
an article, report, advertisement etc. communicated by a newspaper, magazine or other periodical;
•
a program, report, advertisement etc. communicated by television, radio, internet or other forms of electronic communication;
•
a letter, note or other writing;
•
a picture, gesture or verbal utterance; and
•
any other material or means by which something may be communicated to a person.
The message is deemed to be defamatory if it: •
lowers the concerned person’s reputation;
•
leads others to think less of that person;
•
makes others shun or avoid that person; and
•
cause others to ridicule, hate or despise them.
There are several distinct defences to an action for defamation which are all noted in the Act and some of these are: •
JUSTIFICATION – the truth alone is the defence here;
•
ABSOLUTE PRIVILEGE – this defence is available when one can prove that the document was published on an occasion of absolute privilege such as parliamentary matters and publications;
•
PUBLIC DOCUMENTS – this defence is available if the publication is from a public document and the information was published honestly for the advancement of education or for informing the public ;
•
QUALIFIED PRIVILEGE – if the recipient of the defamatory matter has an interest in the information contained in the publication such as a scenario where the information was published in the course of giving that information to that person;
•
HONEST OPINION – if the publication expresses an opinion that is honestly held by the author as opposed to a statement of fact and the opinion was based on proper material that is substantially true;
•
TRIVIALITY – where the aggrieved person is unlikely to suffer any harm.
It is also worth noting that an apology made to an aggrieved person will not constitute an admission of fault or liability.

Given trump’s reputation for rip-offs, bankrupting his companies and dudding his creditors this may not be the most appealing analogy, but it is presumably the best he can do: our Prime minister has the soul of a wheeler-dealer, a horse trader, a haggler. the problem is that while he may have the will he does not always have the technique. his experience in negotiation has been in the board room of Goldman sachs, but the atmosphere of the senate crossbench is more akin to that of the istanbul souk. the rough and tumble of serious dickering, in which bargains are offered and then withdrawn, in which the last price is seldom actually final, in which everything is on the table and then, just as abruptly, off it, is as foreign to him as a grudge match of rugby league in the western suburbs. and it shows – he gives in too easily, he will do anything to secure an outcome, even if he ends up giving away more than he receives. naturally, turnbull rates the last week as a triumph – it justifies his gamble on a double dissolution, it has proved that he can make the parliament work, and now he is delivering – just like the boy from the Pizza hut. and unlike that ambitious youth, he does not expect a tip – indeed, he is willing to pay just about anything to secure the idea of delivery, even if the substance may be very undernourishing indeed. thus various wild and wacky ideas have been accepted by a wild and wacky cross bench, many of them totally unrelated to the bills they are supposed to inspire. the results have not been all bad: the promise of serious and widespread protection for whistle-blowers engineered by nick Xenophon and derryn hinch is welcome and long overdue, even if its connection to the registered organisations bill is, to say the least, tenuous. but the demand from david leyonhjelm that the abc and
sbs become entangled in additional red tape by hosting superfluous community forums is not only irrelevant to the building and construction commission, but also abhorrent to real libertarians, among whom leyonhjelm professes to number himself. the idiosyncratic senator says it is to compensate for the lack of freedom imposed by the abcc, but the logic is impenetrable. similarly Xenophon made a non-negotiable demand for more water for south australia, and then backed off – or did he? it will be interesting to see the outcome. the abcc act eventually passed after hinch and Xenophon negotiated a raft of amendments to which the government agreed, rather than suffering the humiliation of defeats through the alliance of labor and the Greens. according to two of the weird sisters of the australian, Judith sloan and Grace collier (and can the third, Jennnifer oriel, be far behind?) the commission has been gutted to the point of impotence – “an appalling mish-mash of inconsistent and unworkable provisions that completely undermines any benefits that could flow,” to put it in sloan’s terms. it must be said that the rant is hardly surprising; sloan and collier would never have been satisfied with anything short of a return to feudalism. but the compromises – capitulations – were not what the conservatives either wanted or expected. and the large burst of protectionism which was tossed into the mix is completely against the government’s free trade mantra. the tough cop on the beat became a real pushover once the crossbench applied the heat. Which brings us to the backpacker tax, apparently orchestrated by the keystone kops. When the government woke up after the budget, the nats in particular finally realised that the tax rate of 32.5 per cent which they had snoozily passed into legislation, was not quite what their constituents wanted. so there was a frantic rethink, and with the farmers federation they arrived on 19 per cent. but Jacqui lambie undercut them: 10.5 per cent was the competitive rate her constituents wanted, and immediately
labor and the Greens backed her in. the money men, scott morrison and matthias corman, were adamant: 19 was the rate, it was all the budget could afford and it would not change – well, until barnaby Joyce put an armlock on turnbull, and our fearless Prime mister told them that actually, the compromise of 15 per cent suggested by Pauline hanson, of all people, was not such a bad idea. so, back to the drawing board: but hanson’s rebellious sandgroper, rod culleton, hinch and leyonhjelm lined up with lambie and that went down too. so the dutch auction proceeded: how about 13 per cent? never, fumed morrison and corman; but given that this was what they had said four days ago about 19 per cent, it was hard to take them seriously. and then, over the horizon galloped the ignored and reviled Greens, offering a face-saving 15 per cent – but only after superannuation concessions turned it back into an effective 13 per cent, and they trousered $100 million for landcare as a bonus. as shorten and his colleagues pointed out, the government’s preferred solution produced higher tax rate with less money for budget repair; turnbull had been hit with a custard pie. but he didn’t mind: the point was that his side had won the senate vote and labor had lost, and that was all that mattered. so his tattered colleagues could pick up what was left of the pieces and retire for a what they devoutly hoped would be a relaxed and comfortable break. but not before turnbull could be asked a dorothy dixer from an obsequious backbencher asking him to parade the government’s achievements. he responded at some length: an extended diatribe about how awful bill shorten is. and that, it appears, is the only delivery that has not been either a wide or a no-ball. merry christmas. there is no need to wish malcolm turnbull a happy new year – as he repeatedly assures us, he is the happiest prime minister of them all. Just like the other residents in fantasyland – the happiest kingdom of them all. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

O, Christmas Tree the first tree is up at the maleny christmas tree festival! the tree is stark and confronting, a reminder that not everyone enjoys this time of the year with a fresh green tree, and lots of colourful decorations and tinsel and baubles. Places like war-torn syria come to mind. the words on the card at the left are by minnie louise haskins, and were sent to king George vi by his daughter, the current Queen elizabeth ii, as words of encouragement when britain was in the depths of World War ii. the tree will provide a thinking point for visitors to the festival and will be in vivid contrast to any brightly decorated trees we expect to be on display. visit the festival from december 17-24, at maleny Uniting church.

ell there can be no doubt that even the blue sky addicts are crossing their fingers (perhaps behind their backs) and wishing for a bit of rain. these long dry spells remind us of the vagaries of our weather and how dependent we are on nature - especially when the water tank is sounding a little bit hollow. after a great wet early start to spring, the dry and hot weather has set in over the last few months - but this has hopefully changed by the time your read this! no doubt when it rains again it will be heavy and at last we’ll get flow in the creeks again. Water is something that connects us all, particularly in a catchment, whether it be creeks, rivers, lakes, dams or groundwater. the way we treat our water on the blackall range impacts the water that makes its way to the stanley river to the south, to the mooloolah and maroochy rivers to the east and all the way to hervey bay along the great mary river to our north and west. so to be good custodians of the land we call home, we can all make efforts to improve water quality through planting trees which will be a benefit to the wider community of se Qld.

this little dry spell is also no excuse to stop planting; you just need to be a bit more strategic. first check soil moisture levels - if the soil is bone dry and you can’t provide additional watering, give up (just joking - wait till the next decent rain). however if the soil is still even a bit moist, you can still plant revegetation stock, by making sure you mulch well, soak the stock prior to planting, use water crystals to improve soil moisture and of course giving the newly planted stock a big drink – even a few litres will make a big difference. We rarely water after planting. local plants are adapted to local conditions. this dry weather is also a great time to be spreading mulch. at home we like baled straw mulch or coir fibre mats. these mulches are relatively light and easy to spread, great for revegetation work or in the veggie patch or orchard because they help retain soil moisture at the surface to keep your plants growing. at forest heart we stock coir fibre blocks, palm fibre mulch mats and tree guards which are all great products to help establish your plants during these dry spells. and remember that every day without rain is a day closer to the next downpour!
Tough Plants
t
he Paddocks maY have had a green tinge last month but now brown is the dominant colour and the leaf litter is crisp underfoot. those of us who depend on tank water are being very careful and the water in small headwater creeks is confined to pools. revegetation programs may be on hold and gardens are in survival mode, but all is not doom and gloom. Provided the water dishes are kept full, the birds are still around and enjoying any nectar laden flowers or available fruit. some syzygiums are having a third flowering, much appreciated by bees and other insects that in turn provide food for many birds. local species of dianella appear to be coping well and Dianella brevicompta is covered in shiny blue fruit. in the wildlife friendly garden, light shade is making a big difference to ground covers and low shrubs. these often tolerate dry soil so

long as their roots are cool, but are scorched by direct sun when the temperature is above 30 degrees. Xerophytic plants, those naturally adapted to grow under dry conditions, are surviving quite well, and even growing. many australian plants are xerophytes with small, hard leaves that lose less
moisture to the atmosphere than those with soft, large leaves, better suited to a shady, moist, rainforest environment. eucalypts hang their tough leaves edge on to the sun to reduce the exposed surface area and hence reduce moisture loss. it is worth recording the names of trees and shrubs that are ‘hanging in there’. as suggested last month, this won’t be our only dry season and we may need to alter future revegetation and garden lists to reflect our present experience. bottlebrushes and banksias continue their seasonal flowering, grasses are drying off but will come back quickly and with a little bit of water, members of the daisy family provide colour in the summer garden. our gardens will survive and continue to attract wildlife. We just may have to alter the species mix.

The use of the appropriate fertiliser at the right time and correct rate of application is most important for optimal results. all fertilisers have analysis numbers on their packaging. example being, 15%n (nitrogen) 10%P (phosphorus), 12%k (potassium) and some may also contain a range of trace elements such as zinc, boron and manganese. in very simple terms, nitrogen promotes vegetative growth or top growth. Phosphorus aids in flower buds, fruit and root development and potassium builds

strong healthy plants. Plants that grow fast and vigorous such lawns in summer require a fertiliser with more nitrogen than the other two elements. during the slower growing periods of the year, plants use less nitrogen but are still working slow and steady at laying the foundation for the following years buds, flower and fruit production. a fertiliser with an analysis such as 7-25-7 which is high in phosphorus will therefore aid in abundant bud and flower production. fertiliser could be also applied as a liquid foliar spray where the nutrients are absorbed by the leaves.
it is better to under fertilise than over fertilise. be sure to read your product information and use the appropriate fertiliser for the particular plant! Happy gardening!

oW, i was once again left awestruck by the devastating power of nature’s fury when i was out at booroobin recently. a mini tornado must have gone through and carved a very narrow path of destruction through the vegetation. in a strip by the edge of stanley river road i saw several Privet, Ligustrum lucidum, trees completely ripped out of the ground, roots and all. i have never before seen this species fail. While there were some extenuating circumstances, encroaching lawn, road verge, and some recent excavation, the wind
strength must have been phenomenal. in conditions like this no tree could be considered safe. With the cyclone season approaching, cast a discerning eye over any trees that you think present a hazard, and if you are unsure, call me to organise a tree/property assessment. on a brighter note, it is an amazing time of year when we get to see the bumpy ash, Flindersia schottiana, the black bean, Castanospermum australe, and the flame tree, Brachychiton acerifolius, all flowering together. i love these grand endemic species that give our plateau its
distinctive beauty, and now we get to see them in all their glory. also letting you know that i just graduated as a Zen Thai Shiatsu therapist, practising out of our maleny mountain Yoga studio at Witta, so i can now fix your body, as well as your trees!

Reduce your stress in December
D
URING THE SUMMER holidays we tend to spend more time outdoors, so we give a timely reminder to adopt all five tips to avoid sunburn.
Although Christmas is meant to be fun and festive, it is can also intensify stresses, loneliness and grief. We announce a new mental health support group and our columnists also give their tips to minimise stress. Marisa Kliese talks about filtering what we allow into our minds and has a recipe for Christmas-time and Wendy Rosenfeldt recommends school students learn meditation skills whilst on break. Finally we share some present ideas- some that also bring down stress levels: a massage, a day spa experience or for kids - a posture proof backpack.

EBRUARY, 2002. INDIA. It was to be a business trip like no other. Within two weeks I would be transformed from focused businessman to Paranoid Psychotic; arrested at gunpoint in Singapore airport and given a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. Back in Australia, I slid into the abyss of depression and lost a year of my life experimenting with different medications to stabalise my moods. I lost my business and severed ties with my family. It took great strength and determination to face society and to function on my own again. But fourteen years on, I have a beautiful family; my gorgeous wife and three incredible children and two successful businesses in Maleny. My name is Somar Xavier.

Sunscreen isn’t enough O
CHRE HEALTH'S Dr Jocelyn Eggins urges locals to to stay safe in the sun.
Jocelyn says, ”Every Queenslander needs a skin check every year. Regular skin checks means that you may avoid developing a melanoma. Jocelyn works in the Montville and Maleny clinics and has undertaken additional Skin training through the University of QLD, has an advanced certificate in Dermascopy and Dermal Imaging and holds certificates from the Australian College of Skin Cancer Medicine. "Queensland has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world and all age groups are represented – even teenagers!" Cancer Council says around 60 per cent of adults and children have been sunburnt in the past year. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Nicole Border said, “Sunburn is a sign of irreparable damage to the skin, and affects the health of our skin in both the short and long term. “Evidence suggests that childhood sun exposure also contributes significantly to a lifetime risk of skin cancers. “It’s imperative for parents to model SunSmart behaviours and ensure their children have the best possible protection from the sun at all times.” Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said, “Exposure to high UVR early in life doubles your risk of developing melanoma,” Dr Young said. “That’s why it’s disappointing to see that so many Queenslanders, including children and young people, are failing to use adequate sun protection. “I’m encouraging all Queenslanders, particularly parents and young people, to get serious about protecting their skin and to use the five SunSmart behaviours, whenever they or children in their care are outside this summer.”
Around 3600 melanoma and 324,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed across the state each year, and tragically more than 390 people die from melanoma.
Too few Queenslanders were using a combination of all five sun protection measures. “There’s no doubt that with only 26 per cent of adults remembering to slap on a wide-brimmed hat and just 19 per cent wearing a long-sleeved top, Queenslanders are putting themselves at risk of a potentially deadly skin cancer. “The data shows the lack of broad brim hats and clothing is translating to common sunburnt places – the face, head, nose, or ears, along with the arms and hands. Abide by all five recommendations – Slip on protective clothing, Slop on minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies. Early detection is also vital. “If we detect melanoma at its earliest stages, before it spreads, we have a much better chance of beating the disease before it takes hold,” Ms Border said. “It’s imperative that people get to know their own skin - if you notice a new spot or lesion, or a spot or lesion change in shape, colour or size – visit your GP immediately. Jocelyn agrees it is time to get serious about skin protection, "Remember to Slip, Slop, Slap and get that skin check.”
Has it been more than a year since your last skin check? Many of us enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities during the summer season. Unfortunately, the Australian summers can be harsh on our skin. Adopting simple precautions is essential, be SunSmart by practicing effective ways to help prevent serious skin damage. An excellent way to start your SunSmart journey is to have regular skin checks for signs of any irregularities.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You
Meditation, so much more than relaxation
F
OR MOST PEOPLE the goal of meditation is relaxation and reduction of stress. We could all use more of that especially as we Wendy Rosenfeldt are coming into that busy time of year. Organising and attending end of year events, Christmas shopping and finalising work projects can make us feel that we just want to fall in a heap by the time the holidays get here. We understand that when we are busy and tired we are more likely to forget things and feel overwhelmed, so taking time out for meditation is important. However once you get past the waves of fatigue and agitation of a stress- filled mind, there are profound levels of intelligence and insight. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who brought Transcendental Meditation from the Himalayas to the western world, at one stage wanted to change the name of Transcendental Meditation. People had all sorts of preconceptions about meditation; that it was hard to do and took ages to get results, that it required concentration and controlling the mind and that it made people impractical. Maharishi’s technique of Transcendental Meditation is easy, enjoyable and people experience the benefits straight away. It is a highly practical technique to use more of the latent potential of the mind and to rejuvenate the body. It is not a matter of switching off the mind but rather illuminating all the depths of the mind. Maharishi said that instead of calling it Transcendental Meditation he should have called it the Science of Creative Intelligence. As a science it has both the theoretical and the practical aspect. There is the theory of how it works and what will unfold in the individual’s consciousness, and the practical experience inner
Transcendental Consciousness. The development of consciousness that comes about through the experience of Transcendental Meditation is not a random experience, it is a verified phenomenon that can be understood in relation to Quantum Physics. The reason why he wanted to call it Creative Intelligence is that in TM the awareness fathoms all levels of the mind, that correspond to all levels of life, from the superficial level of reality that we all experience to the subatomic level of fluctuating particles. When the mind experiences these subtle levels of life, it comes out infused with creativity and energy. While you may not be able to directly perceive subatomic levels of your surroundings when you first learn TM, you are able to take in more of your environment. Meditators report that the world appears more vibrant, intuition is enhanced and there is a greater sense of unity with other people and the surroundings. Scientific research shows that regular practitioners of Transcendental Meditation can raise their IQ. Brain imaging shows that during TM there is more blood flow to the brain and increased EEG coherence. Transcendental Meditation is used in schools, prisons and businesses. Successful athletes, film directors and musicians attribute their success and creativity to their daily TM practice and in turn meditation is being accepted as a necessary key to a balanced life. Take advantage of the school holidays for school students to learn Transcendental Meditation. There will be free information sessions about TM on Thursday the 15th of December at 2pm and 7.30pm in Maleny. Call Wendy Rosenfeldt on 5499 9580/ 0438 507 188 to find out more.

AVE YOU EVER wondered how many of your thoughts, feelings and actions truly stem from the authentic part of your being? Have you noticed how you are constantly fed information that you let slip into your mind to be retrieved at a later time without even thinking where that information originated from. Just as we have a physical body which needs love, exercise and nutrition to maintain optimum efficiency, we also have a feeling/intuitive nature which needs to be used in order to work for us in a clear and helpful way. There is now a pretty clear connection between our physical health and well being and our inner feeling nature. We are designed to think, we are designed to go beyond what is known and discover greater truths, yet too often the business and survival related focus of our days or even the reverse, the habitual round of daily existence coaxes us into a kind of waking sleep. Not learning to listen to our bodies, not learning to deal constructively with our emotions, not learning to question much of what is fed to us as information, is cheating us of a wonderful kind of aliveness that reconnects us with the enthusiasm and vitality of childhood. Often what ails us, is that we are deeply tired, we are burdened by emotions that we have pushed inside.
We sometimes truly don’t know why, where or what we are moving towards or manifesting in our lives, we just get up every day and do what we believe needs to be done. As you head towards the Xmas and New year break, start every day to relax for a few minutes and just breathe and slowly focus on different parts of your body, notice what you feel. Soften each part as you focus on it. Notice yourself thinking and ask yourself, if thoughts are the precursors to experience what in the world are you creating more of. All thoughts are affirmative, though not necessarily for your betterment. Think of and use constructive affirmations that steer you towards better outcomes in all things. Switch off media, eat vital living foods, go outside walk, talk, play with your loved ones, you’ll soon notice that your awareness and clarity will have you questioning much of what you allow unfiltered into your mind. A backpack for Christmas?
A
NEW SCHOOL BAG is a familiar item under the Christmas tree.
Physiotherapists are ideally suited to assess children’s backpacks and make recommendations to avoid injuries.
About 70 per cent of Australian school children may suffer back pain from school bags, and research has shown teens carry more than 10% of their bodyweight on their backs on a daily basis.
Contact your local physiotherapists, Tim and Mary Bagshaw to find out more.
Fully Equipped Studio Certified & Experienced Teachers Teachers
Attention Health Professionals
To avoid back, neck and shoulder pain, postural changes and injuries, school bags should be backpack style, and should be less than 10 per cent of the child’s body weight, as well as being appropriate for each child’s size with padded and adjusted straps over the shoulders. The APA's key tips for a safe school backpack: • Wear backpack load close to the spine - pack heaviest items nearest to the back • Wear both straps at all times
Contact Karen Muir to promote your news or business in the Hinterland Times’ Health, Wellness & Beauty pages.
• Ensure your child is carrying only what they need - have separate folders for each subject, and encourage your child to be organised and check their timetable when packing their bag • Encourage your child to be physically active – walking to school every day has many benefits for you, your children and your community • When choosing a backpack look for comfortable, wide shoulder straps, waist and chest straps and padded backsupport • Don’t buy a big pack to ‘grow’ into, when sitting with the backpack on, the pack should not extend higher than the child’s shoulders
