Do you want the bad news or the good news? S

CHOOL'S BACK and my house is quiet.

I keep forgetting they're not here. Like me, the dog is also out of sorts and mourning the throng of holiday bodies. Even when I returned after picking up the mail, she greeted me like I had disappeared for a month. Having graduated out of primary school with my youngest, I don't think I have quite processed that my littlest one arrives home long after 2.30pm. Lucky I love my job. Don’t you love the February cover? The reason there are a few phones out is, you could say, they’re actually working above and beyond the call of duty for some of our Visit Sunshine Coast team. It’s a tough gig, selling the Sunshine Coast! But doesn’t the STOMP look fun? You can also dance away at St Valentine’s Day dinners and Above the Blue! In February, Dale shares her walk with Green Hills through the Maleny Trail, Bryan and Stephanie McLennan mention nudists in Montville and Jamie Hodges has a mouth-watering story.

Maleny Trail: Green Hills delivers for the community by Dale Jacobsen

Something very special has grown on our doorstep over the last three years - the Maleny Trail. People, wildlife and plants are drawn to this inviting habitat, still in the process of creation, and a walk along the banks soon reveals why.

TOOK A WALK along the Maleny Trail in the typical coolness of a Maleny twilight to see, for myself, what has been achieved by the banks of Obi Obi Creek. And I was astonished. People walking dogs, riding bikes, jogging, ambling along, were everywhere. As was the wildlife. A pair of rainbow lorikeets crawled along the branch of a huge fig, making for the bird box they call home; a white-faced heron searched among the mat-rushes for its last meal of the day. Skinks rustled in the undergrowth. What amazed me most was the growth that has occurred in the replanted areas in just three years. Ron Sharp, project manager and director of Maleny District Green Hills Fund, told me of their succession plan. “We aim for rapid cover within two to three years, establishing a canopy to provide shelter for the next layer of plants and rainforest species. This also limits ongoing maintenance costs. “As plant species like wattles and bleeding hearts reach their limit, they fall, allowing the rainforest species to emerge. They quickly decompose, feeding the soil and

Edith-Ann Murray, Dr Les Hall, Ron Sharp—directors of Maleny District Green Hills Fund—among the lush creekside forest that was once a pine plantation

creating protective habitat for the animals.” It will take around 20 years for the forest-like profile to fully develop. This trail, opened in 2015, has become the local exercise pad of choice for so many people. Ron explained: “We can have 30 people an hour working out in the cool of early morning, including young mums pushing prams. “Early evening brings out the dog walkers and more gentle walkers. On most days, around 150 people use the trail.” Each person has their own reason for being on the trail, such as Maleny resident, Doug McGufficke, who has lived with Parkinson’s Disorder for the past five years. “A major effective activity of managing my health is an hour’s fast walk every second day,” said Doug. “I have developed a six-kilometre course that includes the Obi Obi Creek Walkway. My best distance within the hour is 6.4 kms. To date, I have completed 150 walks, starting at 6.30am. As I finish each session, I comment: ‘Wow!! I gotterdun!!’ It is very uplifting.” They aren’t all locals either. “Around 40% of the midday users are visitors to Maleny. The Information Centre folk do a great job talking up our popular attraction,” says Ron.

Apart from the human interaction, the story of wildlife regeneration is a huge success. Ecologist Dr Les Hall, who is also a director with Green Hills, explained: “Build a habitat, the wildlife will find it. In no time, they modify it for themselves. Fruit-eating birds drop seeds then rainforest trees take hold and grow to feed the birds.” An impressive 54,000 trees have been planted along the 4.8 kilometre trail. In a huge effort involving the community, 18,500 have been planted by Green Hills over the past couple of years. “The partnership between Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Unity Water and Green Hills is a very important one, delivering environmental outcomes to the Maleny Community Precinct,” said Ron. “They contribute to the funding that provides ongoing maintenance for community plantings. The volunteers have a sense of pride of ownership.” With the revegetation has come the wildlife. I saw the remains of red-browed firetail nests in myrtle shrubs right beside the pathway.

Above: The boardwalk platypus pops up at dusk Left: Doug McGufficke, who lives with Parkinson’s Disorder, makes good use of the Maleny Trail in the management of his health

As we stopped by the platypus viewing platform, a group of dusky moorhens preened by the bank, and a little bittern perched on a log, reflected in the water before a background of lush forest. While we stood waiting to see a platypus, two families wandered onto the viewing platform, then a couple with a dog on a leash. Ron told me how important it is for owners to keep their pooches restrained. “If we want to see rare species like the rose skink survive here, we must protect them from dogs who love to chase wildlife.” The further we walked along the track, off the concrete wheelchair-friendly path and into the older regeneration area, the more peaceful and lush the surroundings became, with silky oaks and blue quandongs reaching 10 metres or more. ‘Peace among the trees’ was the theme chosen by Art4Space (overseen by EdithAnn Murray, also a Green Hills director) for 13 sandstone sculptures by Maleny artists that line the concrete section of the path. Plans for the future include developing the Southern Wetland into a community wetland. Les said that, after Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, it is the most

biodiverse area around Maleny, and the only remaining one of its type on the Blackall Range. There are also plans for a footbridge to cross the Obi Obi to access Gardners Falls. I ended my walk right on dark and, on cue, three platypus popped up beneath the boardwalk for my own private show. What a special place has been created.

TEPHANIE AND BRYAN are well-known amongst many locals on the range. Bryan is a surveyor by profession and many land divisions you may see on paper here have his name to them. Stephanie was a physiotherapist in Montville and Maleny, although these days her overwhelming passion is art, in particular, watercolours and printmaking. So how did their love affair with Montville begin, and why is it ending? “My wife’s parents retired up here, on Western Avenue, and we came up for a holiday,” Bryan explains. “It was winter. I remember driving up Hunchy Road and seeing all these dilapidated houses, and I liked the ambience of it. Plus we were planting Steph’s Dad’s garden during the rain and we weren’t freezing! That appealed to me. “I was working in Canberra at the time and a mate, Ian

Jones, who lives on Western Avenue said, ‘Why don’t you drop out and come up here.’ Dropping out was a popular thing to do in the 70s.” Bryan soon found work. “Back then it was much easier to find work in rural areas. Planning schemes were more supportive of rural transfers, so through word-of-mouth farmers from everywhere offered their land for me to survey.” Time passed and the couple’s three children were nearing High School age. “The kids ended up at boarding school in Brisbane, and I had to ‘drop back in’ again to pay the fees!” It was a big decision, but both feel it was the right one. Their eldest, Matthew, now lives in New York and was recently invited as Guest Speaker at his Brisbane Grammar School annual Speech Day. “He was hailed as ‘one of the most influential Australian investors in the world’, and my wife says, ‘I still don’t really know what he does,’” Bryan laughs. Their two daughters have also forged successful careers, one as a midwife, and the other as a journalist. I ask if the couple feel any regrets at leaving such a special place. “We love it in Brisbane,” Bryan replies. “The lead up to us leaving, Steph was weeping….but when it finally happened, that part of our life was gone.” Except, the ties are clearly still strong. “Steph fell in with a group of female artists years ago, doing en plein air. They went on trips to Italy, France, all over. They would go out every day, paint like crazy, then come back and talk all night over a few bottles of wine! “She is still involved, has won shows and has regular exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast, so we’ll be here a lot. In fact, she’s staying up here with friends this weekend…”

Bryan is clearly proud of Steph. “She was also the driving force behind the Montville Centenary celebrations which, in my opinion, kick started the resurrection of Montville as a major tourist destination. All the wonderful historical photos now hanging in the Montville Hall were organised by Steph.” Bryan himself is also keeping a toe in. “Bob Allen and I convinced the State Government some time ago to construct a walking track from Baroon Pocket Dam to Kondalilla. “John Hargreaves and I are now trying to get a walking tack constructed from Montville Village to Kondalilla, following Skene Creek. “I’m also creating a database of rural landowners who want to do something with land not needed by them,” he continues. “Organic growth has halted. There’s been expansion on the Coast but nothing here. I want to find positive uses for rural land. This can include share farming, wildlife corridors, and housing on ridges and other areas not suitable for traditional rural uses. “So many rural people lost their superannuation in a way, since 1993 when the Blackall Range Development Control Plan happened. People that wanted to live on a small bush block were deprived of a lifestyle choice.” Life away from land issues was a series of amusements, hard work and strange characters. “When we first moved to our own land on Western Avenue, we built a rough shack, showered under a tree and had no electricity for years.” The children had freedom and ran about bare foot. “Matthew and his mate, Martin, decided to camp in Mapleton Forest and ‘live off the land’ when they were still in primary school,” Bryan recalls. “I thought, ‘Oh yeah, see how you go’. They were back by the second day because they got hungry after trying, and failing, to catch a cow!” Nudity is a running theme, with a neighbour regularly picking his pineapples and cheerily waving at the saucereyed family, or driving his tractor down Western Avenue in his birthday suit. (The same neighbour ran the Montville General Store for a time.) “Oh, and early one morning a snake got a chook outside

the window. Steph yelled to me to grab it, so I did, and we jumped in the car to take it down to Lake Baroon. It was only as we passed Roly delivering papers that Steph realised she was stark naked!” Bryan also sheds light on an institution that has “been sanitised and erased from the collective memory” – the Montville Gentlemen’s Club. “Every Friday we would meet at my office opposite the village green for loud music, beer and stories. We even had an amusing initiation mug…but that’s another story.” Bryan played bass guitar with The Deaf Adders, along with Mapletonbased GP, Danny Cox and other hinterland locals. “We used to practice in the building which is now Montville Real Estate. People nearby would ring up with special requests through the evening!” It was a great atmosphere here, with an annual concert in the village hall. “One year at the ‘Peace Concert’ I got a bit excited and blew out one of the speakers,” Bryan grins. The memories are flowing and it is clear that perhaps Bryan and Steph have physically left Montville, but Montville will never leave them.

The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre recently held an auspicious relaxed gathering of three creative men: writer/ producer and actor, Colin “Spida” Dixon, 73-year-old actor, musician, and social activist, Uncle Jack Charles, and artist and speaker, Jandamarra Cadd. Lynda Simpson attended the event, and came away inspired, hopeful and keen to share the three men’s stories and ideas.

T

HESE MEN ARE HELD in high regard within their communities and were brought together to share their words, projects and experiences as part of Neighbourhood Obi Art Prize theme of “Respect”. Local filmmaker Colin “Spida” Dixon is currently filming his feature film Patched in Maleny. A story of two brothers from the same motorcycle club who differ in their views of what a brotherhood should be, one brother desiring a social club, the other an outlaw one. Through the film Colin explores the stereotyping that often follows unconventional tastes or looks. Uncle Jack plays a part in Patched and when Colin organised for Jack to come to Maleny, he realised the

perfect opportunity to bring Jandamarra Cadd and Jack together again, and allowing the community to hear about their projects. When Uncle Jack speaks you’re struck by how eloquent he is, how the years of good and bad experience has created a man with stories to tell and a way to tell them that captivates you. His warmth and openness about his colourful criminal past immediately endears you as he shares how it took till his mid sixties to finally kick a lifetime addiction to heroin. And how now in his 70’s he directs his passionate spirit to the path of helping other indigenous people get off the negative cycle of drugs and incarceration. Uncle Jack was a child of the Stolen Generation, who found his family. One of many indigenous children forcibly removed from their families at 4 months old he was placed with a white family in Melbourne. A dark skinned child obviously not white, he was subject to constant racial abuse at school. Some of the first indigenous people he met would later turn out to be brothers or sisters. His first engagement with his family was after the Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith when the headlines read, “Movie star busted for burglary!” when his family came to visit him in prison.

Nearly 40 years since that time and many incarcerations in between until 2006, Uncle Jack has finally been allowed back into the Victorian prison system, with a new purpose. It’s a mission of Inspiration. Uncle Jack hopes to connect with indigenous prisoners and find “connection to country” again and a new direction when leaving prison. As a man with experience of incarceration and a life of addiction Uncle Jack can talk with conviction. It’s his quest for a sort of “Black Fellas sans Frontiers” where young and old indigenous Australians find their way back to themselves and a boundless future of positive possibilities. Jack hopes his visits may inspire them on creative paths, theatre, writing, or art when they leave the prison, if that is their story, or help them to find positive connections in community and connect with their true passions. Most importantly, he is working to end Australia’s embarrassing record of having the highest rate of incarceration of their indigenous population in the world. Jandamarra, was the Sunshine Coast Art Prize “People’s Choice” Award winner for 2016 with his painting “Radiance”, which stole the hearts of art lovers across the Coast. The painting shared how, from being 13 on the streets, he endured abuse in Australia’s Infamous Westbrook Youth Detention Centre which began as Westbrook Home for boys, one of the most feared reformatory institutions for young boys in the country and part of a government inquiry into child abuse. Jandamarra spoke of three-week isolations in a place called the “Pound”, treated like animals with beatings from the guards, no toilet, bed, or blanket and only “a wall to bang your head against”.

Unable to talk when he was let out, a counsellor, assigned to help him learn to speak again, introduced him to a paintbrush. That brush would help him find the voice that today has been a powerful tool for his own healing and a way to beautifully express the respect and understanding he hopes to inspire for indigenous people. Jandamarra highlights the commonalities and the rich wealth of wisdom that indigenous people have. With 60,000 years under their belts and a way that works in harmony with nature when not “dumbed down with drugs and alcohol” as Uncle Jack puts it, Jandamarra hopes to contribute a positive view that inspires greater respect. “Painting has been my healing”, and with his painting of Uncle Jack, Jandamarra wanted to convey the “massive presence Jack conveys”, the respect and wisdom you feel from him, and how his baptism of fire in his criminal past has seen him come out the other side and now focus that experience to bring out positive change for others. As a judge for the Obi Art Prize, Jandamarra now has the opportunity for further healing as he experiences other artists expressing positive RESPECT in the 2017 Obi Art Prize, Sing for Change, and Creative writings for Change. We must hope that the healing that is so needed within the indigenous community continues through these wonderful men’s work and that creative artists come out in full force and join the Obi Art Prize by submitting works for 2017. The Obi Art Project has extended its deadline until April 30 to allow artists, more time to create their works - visit www.obiartprize.com to find out more details.

THE MAKING OF THE

A stint in Hampshire, England set Jamie Hodges on the pathway to pies, a journey which has rewarded him with accolades, love, a baby and Maleny!

by Gay Liddington

R

ELATIVE NEWCOMER to the Hinterland, Witta resident Jamie Hodges reflects passion for community through his business, The Maleny Pie Guy. He touts local sustainability as a key component. Jamie’s first job in 1995 was working for a bakery franchise at Noosa Junction. However, after five years baking bread and with the promise of an apprenticeship no closer he travelled to the UK. “After five years in Scotland, I found myself in Hampshire, England where I was employed by a farm shop. That’s where my real love of food kicked in.” Jamie paints an idyllic picture of community and sustainability. Home-grown cattle, sheep, pigs and a vegetable garden supported the farm shop along with local produce. “A woman who worked there cooked great cakes…real home cooking. The boss then asked if I would make pies. I told her I’d only baked bread but was willing to give it a shot. “The very first pie I made was a steak and ale pie using their own grass-fed beef and local Hampshire ale. I entered that pie in the Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition in 2004 and won gold.” Working at the farm shop cemented Jamie’s path but led him to a crossroads. The shop eventually closed and with no intention of returning to Australia, he sought work at a local pub. “My plan was to go to Ireland but that’s when I met Olivia. “The John O’Gaunt Inn owned by Liv’s parents is situated in Stockbridge. Olivia was studying and came home mainly on weekends to help out in the pub. “Not long after I started there, Liv was back on holidays. One day her dad said, ‘Marry my daughter and run the pub’.

Jamie, Olivia and baby Juniper Image Jamie Hodges

“My thought was, no…I’ve got a plan.” A well-known quote, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, certainly came into play for the young Aussie. Over the course of the next three months Jamie and Olivia moved in together. Her dad still offering the pub as part of the deal. Olivia completed her studies as an Occupational Therapist and three years later in 2010 the couple settled in Australia where Jamie began selling his pies at local markets. “After moving from state to state, we ended up in Sydney. Not big fans of city life, we were hooked when we came up to the Sunshine Coast for my sister’s birthday and visited Maleny. “I walked into the Upfront Club and thought, this is really cool. We walked around town, liked the look of the place and picked up on that community feel. “We went back to Sydney, were not happy with our jobs and Liv was always Googling Maleny. street and that was a deal breaker. Maleny is the one place we chose to move to rather than go for work reasons.” Jamie began as a cook at the Upfront Club and in tandem started up his food business once again. “I was still trading under my old business name but Julie Shelton from the Real Food Festival reinforced an earlier suggestion that I create a name that included Maleny. Seeing we were committed to staying here ‘The Maleny Pie Guy’ came into being.” The Maleny Pie Guy’s menu includes a range of pies, pasties and sausage rolls, vegetarian and gluten free offerings and of course wickedly delicious sweets. I salivate as I think of my favourite, Chocolate and Ginger Nut Slice (gluten and egg free). It’s like velvet melting in your mouth. “The pies have evolved over the past couple of years. I use 100% grass fed Maleny Black Angus Beef and use the bones for stock, the key to a tasty pie. It is simmered overnight for full flavour. “I make everything from scratch. Fresh vegetables, herbs, real stock and free-range ingredients. All fillings are preservative free. “From my experience of working in bakeries, pies are made, baked, chilled then reheated. Whereas mine are made and frozen then baked onsite. Another big part of my market is that people buy them frozen, take home, ready to bake.” When Jamie is not baking, selling, marketing and bookkeeping he shares care for his nine- month old daughter Juniper. He says, “It’s a different full time job being a dad but I love it. Juniper is my assistant in training. She loves sausage rolls and when I make pies I’ll keep aside some gravy and mix it with her vegie puree.” The Maleny Pie Guy’s stall is located at local markets and festivals. He’s also a weekly regular at the Artisan Market in Maple Street. Jamie’s vision for the future includes expanding the wholesale arm of the business and exploring franchise opportunities with the ethos of local sustainability. An important part of this will be the tomato sauce fundraising venture for a local charity. “I make my own tomato sauce and offer it to customers for a donation which goes to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge at Sippy Creek. To date we’ve raised over $2000.” It seems that Jamie Hodges always had a plan. However, destiny rerouted him on several occasions. Drawn to the hinterland, Jamie has immersed himself in the Maleny culture embracing and enhancing the grass roots spirit of a sustainable community. WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 2 In last month’s article I discussed formalities that Must appear in a Will in order for it to be a valid document. In this article I discuss matters that Should appear in a Will and why. A Will Should contain the following: 1. EX ECU TORS Appointment of one or more executors. The executor’s job is to carry out the wishes of the Testator as these are set out in the Will. Provided that the person is aged 18 or over and does not lack mental capacity any person can be appointed to that position including a beneficiary of that Will. It is always a good idea to appoint two or more executors in case one executor should predecease the Testator.

Destressing on L ORD H OWE I SLAND

2. G I FTS The Will should also discuss how gifts of property are to be distributed.

3. RESI D UE The residue means the left-over property of the Testator after the Testator has given away specific items of property. An example could be where the Testator gives his house to a beneficiary but does not mention what is to happen with the rest of his assets such as cash and shares. If the Will contained a Residue clause then these non-specific and non itemized pieces of assets will be able to be distributed. If, on the other hand, the Will did not contain a Residue clause then the result would be partial intestacy. Intestacy means that those items of property not specifically gifted away would have to be distributed in terms of the rules of intestacy rather than as one might imagine that the Testator would have wanted.

4. AT TESTATI ON The attestation of a Will states that the Testator signed the Will in the presence of both witnesses. The best place for an attestation clause to appear is at the end of the Will. Should the Will not contain an attestation clause and the witnesses not be found to clarify that they were both present when the Testator signed the Will then it may be impossible to obtain a grant of probate of the Will.

Most trips writer Dale Jacobsen takes are for a reason — to research for a writing project, to attend a festival or visit family and friends. But just once in a while, she travels for pure relaxation. After checking the weather forecasts, the maximum and minimum temperatures, Dale decided Lord Howe Island was the place for a week of pure hedonism.

by Dale Jacobsen

T

O TRAVEL TO THIS tiny island—a remnant volcano in the Tasman Sea—is to step out of the rat race. Life moves at its own pace. Part of the attraction for us was spending time on an island that is mostly accessible by foot. People walk, or cycle, along the few streets; traffic speed is limited to 25kph. And there is basically no internet. Unbelievable, I know, but everyone walks with their heads up, smiling and saying hello, and looking at the stunning views instead of screens. Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird dominate the southern end of the island, 10 kilometres long. They also dominate the weather. We landed, in our tiny Dash 8 aircraft, buffeted by crosswinds that are often so strong flights have to be postponed.

Beneath the two basalt peaks, we stepped from the plane onto an apron of trim green lawn bordered by a white picket fence. I doubt there is an airport anywhere to match it for quaintness. And the locals, so proud of their island home, greeted the plane with mini buses to take each of us to our accommodation, stopping on the way to enable us to buy groceries and grog. As I said, life moves at its own pace. The weather changes hour by hour. Because I had signed up for kayaking in Antarctica a few months after this holiday, I took advantage of the kayaks provided by our guesthouse. I set out in perfect weather, gentle ripples on the surface, and paddled around the safe waters of the lagoon. I was so mesmerised by fish swimming over the white sand in crystal clear water, that I didn’t notice the wind pick up. I experienced my first ‘wet landing’. Lesson learnt. That afternoon we put-putted over the same clear waters and fish in a glass-bottom boat to see, firsthand, the most southerly coral reef. Apart from the twin mountain peaks, it is the vegetation that stands out. So very different from the sclerophyll forests of the mainland. Just about everywhere on the island is covered by kentia palm plantations, first planted in the 1870s. A common enough garden plant, but every kentia from anywhere in the world originates from Lord Howe. Enormous banyans and Norfolk Island pines are everywhere that the kentias aren’t. The pines, some hundreds of years old, were originally planted for use as replacement masts for sailing ships, but proving too brittle for the job, they remained to grow into giants. As the week unwound, so did my stress levels. I wandered from our cabin down a track, onto the island’s only jetty, and stared into unbelievably aqua water to watch a ray flap lazily below. We played pool in the games room while a storm thrashed the palms outside.

Opposite page: Mount Gower dominates the island Above: Dale Jacobsen gets in some kayaking practice Left: A giant Norfolk Island pine Below: Doug on the island’s only jetty

We did take a bit of Maleny with us, as it happened. A tick. Didn’t discover it embedded in Doug’s beard until we were waiting at Brisbane airport for our plane. I quickly removed it, dashed to the airport pharmacy for antihistamines, but a nasty rash spread. Warning bells of all sorts rang, so we walked to the island’s hospital on Sunday morning. A friendly nurse, who lives out the back, welcomed us and said the doctor would be along when he finished with the morning’s church service. We waited, and along he came, peddling his pushbike, complete with an old dog on a lead. “I’ve never seen a tick bite before”, he admitted. He said he had come for a threeyear stint, that was 20 years ago. Another relaxed and peaceful resident.

The feeling of community is very strong among the 350 permanent residents. Restaurants, resorts, clubs, all transport visitors after dark. The food is very good – perhaps a little pricey, but when you consider the lengths they have to go for resupplies (mostly by ship that comes fortnightly), it is understandable. As we waited for our return flight, unsure whether the wind would pick up (they will not land if it is over 20 knots), I felt disappointment that, in a few hours, I would be back in the land of WiFi, internet, emails, demands … How tempting it would be to leave the phone and computer turned off. But then, I knew that would never happen, and anytime I feel the need to disconnect, I can always fly back to the serenity of Lord Howe Island.

This is the Life! Award winning Maleny Grove is designed to allow you to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in a supportive retirement community. Wrapped in picturesque hinterland views, your spacious villa maximises privacy and orientation with quality finishes throughout. Located only minutes from the convenience of local shops, cafes and medical facilities, and with a range of clubhouse facilities available, Maleny Grove give you the freedom to live life on your own terms plus support options available when needed.

is just fun! B

UY YOUR TICKETS now because STOMP 2017 is on at Flame Hill Vineyard on February 25. Owner Tony Thompson says, "I think it would be rated as an unforgettable experience. It is something too good just to be shared be with locals." STOMP promises world class wine, a breathtaking venue with ocean views and remarkable regional food diversity. Visit Sunshine Coast are planning to market this event internationally. This year they have a big spectrum of entertainment starting with the smooth sounds of Swing Central to get you in the groove for the afternoon, before the tribal vibe of Human Rhythm during the ceremony, and all in between. The most fun is the end of vintage ‘let your hair down’ – get your heels off stomping of several tonne of grapes. "Honestly, you get the most prim and proper person turn up to it, and they kick back and relax, share a bottle or two of Flame Hill's finest and there is no way you can stop them pulling their gear off and stomping the grapes. There's a frenzy - you can't stop it." STOMP also marks the change of season, welcoming the vibrancy of cooler times, open fires, and hearty fare..

Making memories at Flaxton Gardens

Alan and Mariana Thompson have plenty to smile about with happy hour, art exhibitions, gastronomic delights and glorious views at Flaxton Gardens

M

ARIANA AND ALAN Thompson are newlyweds. Their conversations bounce off each other with a synchronised rhythm and affectionate smiles play on their faces. They married at beautiful Flaxton Gardens, which they also happen to own. “Flaxton was a seven year journey to purchase,” says Alan. “I was the closest to the previous owner’s vision, which helped.” Alan likes to work behind the scenes managing the business and overseeing the kitchen, whilst Mariana focusses on the marketing and front-of-house. “I’m wherever I need to be,” Alan states. “Look at me, I’m better behind the scenes, my wife is a lot better looking than me!” Alan is a chef by trade, and he loves to cater for visitors with “a good everyday balance”, from Asian salads, to steaks, to scones. “We like to think of it as affordable excellence with amazing views,” explains Mariana, looking out at the sweeping horizon where ocean meets sky. Alan agrees, “We’ve always said we ‘do life’ for people. Whether it’s starting in a marriage, a baby shower, a girls High Tea, or a ‘celebration of life’ send off.” The Vineyard Restaurant, the Winery and The Barrel Room offer different options for social events, and a Happy Hour now runs from Thursday to Monday, 5-6pm. Art exhibitions are a new initiative starting this month, and the couple aim to add music evenings to the mix later in the year. “Flaxton Gardens is a special place, with a fantastic team,” Alan smiles. “It holds a lot of good memories for people. And the best part is, they can always come back.” HINTERLAND TIMES – FEBRUARY 2017

Dusk on the Deck Z

oNTA CLUB of Blackall Range will again celebrate International Women’s Day this year with the popular Dusk on the Deck party and it will again include the presentation of the Woman of Achievement award. International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8 and as Zonta International’s mission concerns the advancement of the status of women, clubs mark the day as Zonta Rose Day featuring a clear yellow-scented rose, their symbol of peace and friendship. In 2016 Zonta Blackall Range inaugurated a Woman of Achievement Award granted to a woman from the range who, as a volunteer, has served her community in an outstanding way. The first award was won by Pamela Marsden of Maleny whose wide ranging service to the community made her a popular choice. President, Alison Huth, is excited about this year’s event even though the club will be extremely busy. “We are currently receiving nominations for our award, and I am sure our judges will be hard pressed to find a winner in this contest of equals. We are also inviting sponsors for the event so that we can again offer free entry and great finger food, in a gesture of appreciation to the community that helps us throughout the year.

“This is not a fundraising event for us; it is a happy celebration of women in the community, and the extraordinary work they do to make our world a better place. “Zonta is a worldwide organisation of business and professional people who work together so that by education and example we can prevent the root causes of gender inequality in every community, race and creed and in this way eradicate domestic violence,” said Alison. Last year’s Dusk on the Deck invitation was designed by Zontian Nita Lester and won a design and publishing award in the US, so the committee will use this invitation again. Invitations will go out as soon as the sponsors’ logos are added, but the event is open to the general public. Held at 5.30 to 7pm on Wednesday, March 8 on the upstairs deck at the Maleny Community Centre, you can find information on Zonta on the website www.zontablackallrange.org.au The invitation will be posted there soon, and also on Facebook.

Autumn

The Barefoot Investor

Hello in There

Ali Smith

Scott Pape

Jo Witek

Autumn is the first in a shapeshifting seasonal quartet about time and history, art and love and the state the state is in. Its now is right now: turbulent Brexit Britain, where people scan the papers on their phones “to catch up on the usual huge changes there’ve been in the last half hour”.. Smith says many important things - about society, humankind, decision making, friendship, and love. She writes of the young and the old, the past and the future. Maybe an accelerated news cycle requires accelerated art? A manuscript usually takes a good year to be birthed into the world as a book, but Autumn sped through the presses in a matter of weeks. I can’t remember reading a novel that felt so firmly footed in the present. Autumn is a triumph; compulsive and compelling, timely and timeless. It is a wonderful, wondrous book.

Money. We all want it. We all want to know better ways of earning/saving/investing it. We all want to make the most out of our super so when we’re older we won’t have to work quite so hard, if work at all. We all want to know what to say to our insurance provider and how to say it to get what we want. We all want to have money saved in case of an emergency, some for that special holiday and for the house we want to build or buy (By Scott’s calculations and with his sage advice we can do this in 20 months). Pape offers a no-nonsense guide to help us all – the single mum on Centrelink, the man starting over again in his 50s to the empty nesters and retirees. This is a book that needs to be in the hands of every Australian – young and old alike.

From the author of the bestselling, In My Heart! comes an interactive heartfelt look at the wonder and excitement involved in waiting…. and waiting….and waiting for a new sibling to arrive. The story’s protagonist is so super keen to start her big sister role that she starts early! She remains close to her mother so she can and sing songs to her sibling-to be (very loudly, of course) and helps explain all of life’s delights waiting in the outside world (cupcakes! strawberries! swimming!) The Growing Hearts series celebrates the milestones of a toddler’s emotional development, from conquering fears and expressing feelings to welcoming a new sibling. Full of simple yet beautiful illustrations and lift-the-flap sections on each page, this is a fantastic book to help introduce and celebrate the arrival of a new family member.

N FeBRUARy 12 Maleny’s easton Lawyers celebrate their tenth birthday. Speaking with solicitor, Tove easton, and Practice Manager, Sharon Schofield, whose passion is estate administration, one can feel their exuberance and commitment to those whom they serve. A heart-centered approach to clients is evident. Tove says: “I really like being in a small community where there are real people. I’m genuinely happy every day when I come to work. We are a great team. “If we can’t answer queries over the phone we ask people to come in and see us. We don’t charge for that first appointment. We try to be approachable,” sasys Tove who moved to Maleny in 2000 with her husband and family. Initially, Tove worked for 18 months as Alistair Charlton’s articled clerk when she was a newly admitted solicitor prior to taking up a position on the Sunshine Coast. She returned in 2007 to commence her own practice. Sharon Schofield who has been with the firm for 27 years has seen its history unfold. “I started here in 1990. It was my first job when I left high school. The business whose roots are firmly embedded in the Maleny community began over 30 years ago. “our clients are a part of our lives. It’s a privilege to help people through tough times. If people can’t come to us, we’ll go to them,” said Sharon. easton Lawyers take an active part in supporting

Not one but two events coming up tie religion to art – one in Woodford and the other a new permanent fixture in Montville.

oHN PeARSoN was born and raised in South Africa. In 1974, he completed a BA Fine Arts (Hons) Degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where he also completed his Diploma of education the following year. “I spent the next six years as a secondary school art teacher and then had two years in the advertising industry as an illustrator,” John told us. In 1986, The Pearson family migrated to Australia where they settled in Perth. “The following year, I completed my MBA at the University of Western Australia and then worked for the next twelve years as a marketing manager and painted only as a hobby,” Whilst living in Perth, John and his wife, Pat, ran two art galleries and framing businesses for fifteen years. They settled on the Sunshine Coast in 2012 and John is now a full time artist. “This will be the first time John has been an Artist of the Month for our gallery and we are thrilled with the standard of the work he has produced for his show,” said gallery director, Joan Page. “The theme I have chosen follows a path I have been exploring over the years,” John explained. “Using an impressionist technique, I have endeavoured to transport viewers to places where they will find joy and comfort. All the situations and places appear to be waiting for viewers to appear and take their places and enjoy the calm; no figures are depicted.” Many of the scenes are of patios and outdoor table settings with enticing treats which invite viewers to participate: Hence, the title “Take Me There.” open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. From February 1st, John’s paintings will be featured under Exhibitions on the gallery website www.montvilleartgallery.com.au

No more Quota Debutante Ball?

Quota members don't want to see the Debutante Ball go, but are looking for a group to take it on

Q

UoTA CLUB oF MALeNy has been running the Deb Ball for an impressive 26 years, since 1990; 2016 was their last year. President Susan Rough shares, “We are not running the ball any more ourselves. if someone else wants to run it we will support them.” The members decided to remind the local community of the decision taken last year in case they assumed Quota Club would continue the tradition. So why have they reached this decision? “We

are a group with an average age now of close to 70 (compared to 40 in 1990). Running this event takes a lot of time in preparing the young couples as well as running the night,” explains Deb. Quota Clubs has a mission to help create sound beginnings in the areas of the hard-of-hearing and speech impaired; and disadvantaged women and children. “The baĺls have enabled us to make donations but fundraising is not our core purpose. Also the costs involved in suit and gown hire make this prohibitive for many in our local area.” Their potential candidates have been reduced with the aging demographic in the Maleny area,

with the club needing a minimum of 12 couples to make it viable. “We know there are families who wish to continue the tradition, and we would like to give the community the opportunity to take over while we have the organisation and procedures set up where we can advise and be available for consultation if necessary.” Planning and recruitment needs to begin in April for a winter ball. If you are disappointed with this news and want a valuable community event to continue, please email smrough52@gmail.com for planning details and information.

Above the Blue 2

Golden Guitar winner Travis Collins

In 2015, with the help of Apex Maleny, Col Finley, Richo Richardson and Kelly Cork launched a CD at a sell out concert in the Maleny RSL. Above the Blue featured songs written by Col. The proceeds went to Beyond Blue for mental health support. Col said, “Just imagine what we could do with that sort of money here on the Blackall Range, distributing it locally!” So, it’s on again. Saturday February 25, 7.00pm at Maleny RSL. A night jam-packed with talent including Col, Richo and Kelly, Janelle Braden and other world-class performers, hosted by Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson. Tickets $40. The original album will be on sale. www.colfinley.com.au

Travis Collins is starting 2017 up for six Golden Guitar Awards in Tamworth. We are confident Travis will be bringing home many of these awards and the Palmwoods gig will be his first Queensland gig as a Golden Guitar Winner. Travis Collins is set to shine brighter than ever with his new album Hard Light. A captivating and refreshingly real collection of songs that show the HARD side of sharing personal struggles, but also the LIGHT in embracing them to produce incredible strength and character. Travis continues to cement his reputation as a powerhouse artist in the Australian music industry. See him at the Palmwoods Hotel on February 25.

Come to a Maleny Music Party

I, Daniel Blake Ken Loach, the applauded master director of social realist dramas, tackles the topical mire of bureaucracy. Daniel is a 59 year-old woodworker widower from the North-east of england whose heart attack pitches him suddenly into dole queues and the confusion of applying for the deceptively optimistic ‘jobseeker allowance’. The only real world appears to be on-line, not as easily accessed as bureaucracy asserts. A tough script based in research stays true to its direct call for social change. February 11, 7.15pm, doors open 6pm for dinner catered by Lumbini. Bar / tea, coffee and slices available - Maleny Community Centre. Brought to you by Maleny Film Society.

Much-loved international klezmer ensemble the London Klezmer Quartet return to the Maleny RSL on February 11 at 7.30pm, with their latest hit album. The London evening Standard enthused: "With artistry like this, the music doesn't have to be reinvented". "Dynamic and authentic," says Time out, London. After the interval The Unusual Suspects (23 piece street band – 7 drummers, 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, clarinet, a tenor horn, 2 trombones, a sousaphone, an ipod, an electric bass, an air guitar and a rezouki) will coax you onto the dance floor with their beguiling, funky dance music. Tickets cost $20 / $15, book now: www.eventbrite.com

Boogaloo at Finbars Aussie Boogaloo is a four-piece, highenergy cover dance band, with a deep love for performing songs written by Australian and New Zealand artists. Aussie Boogaloo approach their primarily 80s-centric repertoire with an enthusiastic mix of sincerity and satire, although cover a swathe of your old Australian rock favourites anywhere from the 60s till now. Vocals are shared between Mark ‘Sparky’ Paltridge on acoustic guitar, and the now infamous erin Sulman. Rory o’Donnell joins them on lead guitars and vocals, and Jay Ray completing the lineup on bass. Aussie Boogaloo create a party atmosphere wherever they play, so see them on Saturday 18, 8pm at Finbars.

Outspoken: Malachy Tallack

Michelle Brown at Hotel Maleny

We begin 2017’s program on March 1 with the remarkable Scottish author Malachy Tallack. Malachy attracted a lot of attention with his first book, 60 Degrees North. Born and raised in the Shetlands he was always fascinated by the idea of the 60th latitude and the types of people who choose to live along its imaginary line. He’s in Australia to promote his new work, The Un-Discovered Islands, a study on islands of imagination, deception and human error. He’ll be in conversation with Steven Lang. For more information and tickets visit outspokenmaleny.com.

Cloudstreet return Sam Shepherd at Finbars Maleny's awarded young jazz-blues singer/guitarist, Sam Shepherd, started playing guitar at the ripe old age of five. After hearing the applause Sam was hooked. years spent busking at markets enabled him to hone his craft and save for his first handmade guitar. In 2009 Sam graduated from Griffith University with a ‘Bachelor of Popular Music’. Since then he has worked and performed with some of the best musicians in the country, such as guitar virtuoso Michael Fix and Ian Perez (Wolfmother). In 2013 Sam was the opening act for 'Diesel' on the Sunshine Coast. See Sam on Friday 17, 7pm at Finbars.

Internationally renowned folk group, Cloudstreet, make their fifth appearance as guests of The Goodwills (Bob and Laurel Wilson) in Maleny on February 19. original members John Thompson and Nicole Murray, now joined by fiddle player and singer emma Nixon, performed at the recent Woodford Festival. e ALL LoVe KoALAS but would you be willing to slow down a bit on bushland roads to keep them alive? Is the the speed with which you complete your journey really worth the fauna carnage we see on roads in bushland areas? My general rule of thumb is don’t drive any faster than your reactions and brakes will stop you, if something were to appear on the road ahead of you, whether it be a koala, echidna, wallaby, livestock or kids! you could argue that its hard to avoid a wallaby leaping in front of your car and that excuse could have some merit, but Koala’s are not known for their speed and if you hit one, you are undoubtedly driving too fast for conditions. Perhaps not surprisingly even after road trauma Koalas are still not known for their fast get aways, so there’s not much of an excuse for driving off and leaving an injured Koala to suffer on the road… … So just before Christmas we were ambulance for a Koala who had just been hit at the intersection of Reesville and Corks Pocket Road, Reesville and left to fend for herself. When we found her, she was limping to the side of road crying in pain like a baby. Karen wrapped her in a blanket* and we took her to the Wildlife Hospital at Beerwah.

Unfortunately, this 10-year-old female was too badly injured from that mornings collision and was euthanased. She had already suffered a break to her other leg (from a previous hit and run?) and that had healed badly. Sadly, back in Reesville her companion called for her for the rest of the day from the roadside trees they were feeding from. Koalas are surviving in remnant bushland areas on the hinterland in ok (I’d hesitate to say good) numbers while their population has generally crashed throughout Se QLD. As hinterlanders we can take pride in this survival and the wild areas that we live adjacent to. We can also ensure the survival of Koalas by driving safely on bushland roads in areas such as Reesville, Witta, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton. you can do this by slowing down and driving to suit conditions and keeping your eyes out for wildlife on the road - it’s their home too. Time to get down of my high horse (I suffer from terrible vertigo) and end with a joke. “Why did the Koala cross the road?”. “To get to the other side”. It really is that simple. *Wild animals are potentially dangerous, especially when injured. keeping close watch for signs of heat stress. Well established plants have survived well and even grown. Some plants have surprised, particularly those naturally found on soil types other than in one’s own garden. Philotheca queenslandica, Queensland Wax Flower from the coastal heath, appears to be quite happy in the heavy soil of the eastern escarpment and is a lovely garden plant with masses of white or pale pink flowers winter to spring. Brachyscome multifida, Cut-Leaf Daisy, seems to thrive just about anywhere and Barung’s Porters Lane nursery has plenty of stock. It is much hardier than some of the related pink flowering cultivars. As a general observation, species of our favourite genera such as Brachyscome and Scaevola grow more vigorously than cultivars and varietal selections. The latter have often been bred or selected in more temperate regions. It is, however, always worth

experimenting. Both survival and growth habit can be quite variable depending on soil conditions, water availability and level of exposure to either shade or sunlight. Leptospermum leuhmannii, an apparently rare tea tree from the Glasshouse Mts, is easily propagated from seed, is a tall, slender shrub in light shade and a multistemmed shrub with an attractive weeping habit in full sun. others that have surprised have been supposedly slow grass trees, Xanthorrhoea spp., that have continued to grow right through the hot weather and with no additional water. Grevilleas related to G. rosmarinifolia have grown well where others with a different genetic background have failed. It really helps with future planning to keep records. enjoy your gardening this year, keep the wildlife in mind and don’t be afraid to experiment. A few losses are worth the knowledge gained.

NATIVe To BRAZIL, Argentina and Paraquay, passion fruit is grown in many parts of the

world. easily grown on a trellis, fence or even a dead tree the creeper grows vigorously and with the right care produce bountiful crops. Panama Gold, Panama Rd and Nelly Kelly are the most popular varieties. The blue Passion Flower, Passiflora Caerulia is usually used as a rootstock to graft such varieties as Nelly Kelly. Choose a sunny and frost free position with good loamy soil. Passion fruit are heavy feeders and need adequate water and fertilizer.

Loors Landscaping

Well rotted cattle manure and citrus fertilizer are good choices to produce large yields. Vines should be pruned to control their growth and also encourage flowering. your first crop can be expected approx 18 months after planting. If your vine is not producing fruit it could be due to one or more of the following reasons: 1) lack of adequate water 2) heavy rain during flowering which affects the viability of pollen 3) excessive nitrogen rich fertilizer

which will tend to produce extra leaf growth at the expense of flowering 4) Lack of sunshine, at least 5-6 hours per day is required.

Mungo MacCallum

alternate P

eRHAPS eMBoLDeNeD by the Trumpery of alternate facts Malcolm Turnbull spent most of last week spruiking an alternate Trans Pacific Partnership. Unwilling to admit the reality – that The Donald had killed off the idea with a stroke of the pen, and in any case its abolition had been bipartisan American policy for many months, our Prime Minister continued to fantasise that it could still be the cornerstone of the new strategic and economic alliance he craved for Australia. Bull, of course, sheer wishful thinking. But his persistence was baffling to the point derangement. First, he tried to pre-empt Trump by pushing for Australia to ratify the deal – if he was serious he could have done so months ago, but in any case there was little point: until both Japan and the USA ratified (and admittedly Shinzo Abe rushed to do so in a similar panic move) the TPP could not go ahead, so why bother? Then he suggested that perhaps, pressed by more serious Republicans, Trump could perhaps reconsider. This is highly unlikely, but even if it came about, the consequences would not be good for Australia. The main criticism of the TPP, as far as it could be ascertained through leaks from Wikileaks (the details were kept secret from all except the major corporations which designed the drafts) was that it gave the USA too much power. In particular, it allowed enhanced property rights for Americans (the antithesis of free trade, one might have thought) and it set up a system by which aggrieved private companies could sur sovereign governments if they felt like it. Both big free kicks for Wall Street. But Trump while no fan of Wall Street, complains that the TPP is not favourable enough to America: he wants even more favours and advantages. At its best, the TPP was never all that promising: the only real selling point was that it might give our farmers (well, some of them) a toehold into the American market. In spite of the ritual palaver about jobs and growth, serious analysts such as the World Bank estimate the overall net worth of the TPP at less than one quarter of one percentage point – not per year, but forever. And Turnbull and Scott Morrison refused to let our

own most responsible agency, the Productive Commission, even consider the deal. So if the original version would have been something of a fizzer, a revised Trump version of a TPP would be a disaster for Australia, not some kind of redemption. So Turnbull, absurdly, turned to threats: if Washington would not play ball with Canberra perhaps Beijing would: perhaps China could become the centrepiece of a new TPP. Quite apart from the fact that China would not have the remotest interest in picking up the pieces of a failed American agenda, the whole concept of the TPP was to cement USA supremacy and contain China: part of the increasingly shaky American pivot to Asia. When no one took any notice of this nonsense, the latest tactic was to say that, well, perhaps America was out, but we could still save the rest of the TPP. The indefatigably optimistic Trade Minister,, Steve Ciobo, spoke of a “twelve minus one” TPP. Not even the government’s staunchest conservative allies bought this idea: in The Australian both Greg Sheridan and Judith Sloan, to name but two, derided it as farcical.

... the government has no plan B: only denial, obfuscation, bluff and bluster. And in case there was any lingering doubt, Japan (yes, the Japan which had ratified the original TPP) and Canada both declared that a TPP without America was a meaningless idea. So, with three of the big boys out, the concept of a “twelve minus three,” with probably more dominoes to fall, is not worth pursuing by anyone serious – which leaves Turnbull and Ciobo, still clinging, not even to a straw, but to the open waters of internationalism. It has been a major set back, so Turnbull, never one to admit the obvious, instead rounded on Bill Shorten and

the Labor opposition, branding them as protectionists and men of the last century simply because they had faced fact that the TPP was dead, defunct, fallen off the twig: an ex-TPP. All of which suggests that despite all the clear signals from Washington that the grand alliance was never going to happen, the government has no plan B: only denial, obfuscation, bluff and bluster. It is not an auspicious prelude to Turnbull’s big Wednesday address, in which he will orate to the National Press Club (and anyone else who will listen) about his ideas for the year, the parliament, ahead. Apart from no TPP, no national economic plan promising corporate tax cuts for all, and never, ever negative gearing to help ameliorate the housing crisis, not much has been foreshadowed. That is, apart from the endless threats to our security and still more reasons for to impose draconian measures to restrict our liberties in order to protect us from all being murdered in the streets. Not such exciting times for 2017. The overall picture is that of a government caught well and truly with its pants down, although it was repeatedly warned that both its belt and braces were in urgent need of repair. The expectation – at least the hope – was that Trump would lose, and if by some chance he won, he could be persuaded to act like a moderate – that his radical rhetoric would be constrained by wiser heads. But it has not been so, and it is time to accept that perhaps he actually meant what he said, however rash and reckless it may be. So when Trump moves to inaugurate trade wars, and, more alarmingly, his incoming State Secretary, Tyrannosaurus Rex Tillerson, threatens a blockade on the artificial Chinese islands in the South China Sea, perhaps it is time to start taking Trumpery seriously. Alternate facts may be comforting, but they will neither pay the rent nor safeguard our interests. We wait with considerable trepidation as our agile prime minister prepares to mount the rostrum.

y LAST FeW articles have been a bit on the gloomy side, and whilst scenes of havoc and destruction are still playing out across the Range every time another super cell appears, I thought I’d lighten the mood and focus on the amazing growth that’s occurring at the moment. Natural energy is bursting out of the ground all around us, and it is fairly typical to expect 2 metres or more of vertical growth per year in the faster growing tree species up here on the plateau. I once climbed an 18 year old eucalypt at Witta that was 35 metres tall, you can do the math. one point about all this is that you need to be

careful about what you plant, and where, because, as this eucalypt illustrates, that tiny tube will turn into a giant in a decade or so. Bearing this in mind, it is good to plant the larger species with plenty of room between them, maybe 10 metres apart, to allow room for them to fully develop, and plant smaller species in between as fillers if necessary. you can also plant sacrificial plants in between, with a view to removing them later once the desired species have established themselves. There should be plenty of rain just around the corner, so get out there and wack a rainforest giant in the ground, then sit back and watch it grow.

eRRIN SHAW is the co-ordinator of the Maleny Sunday Market for the fourth year - and with her background, it is no surprise that she relishes the role. “I used to be an antique dealer and collected china. I made jewellery too, working at the Gold Coast and eumundi markets.” Mount Mellum resident Merrin also loves to knit. Tea cosies in particular. “I've been doing them for 12 years and I used to sell them at the Gold Coast. Knitting is something I can do when I’m at work,” she smiles. “I used to work in child safety and you just wanted to create something beautiful in that mucky world. I like to create small things, because my attention span isn't that focused.” With so many tea cosies on offer, Merrin needs about 100 teapots to display them! “Some people don’t get it. Some people tell me no one uses a pot any more.” Merrin believe the tea cosies “evolve themselves”. She is the facilitator, but, “they take on their own life and never finish the way they start. I blame them!” Perhaps it is also about having something bright and beautiful to liven your day. Merrin nods, “And it’s not about keeping tea warm, it’s about lovely conversations over the teapot.” Visit the Maleny Market from 8am-2pm, Maleny RSL Hall.

"Last week before we could present John with an overall winner's prize, he suddenly passed away in his sleep. John was such a generous character who touched the hearts of many, he will be missed."

Introducing a “hands on” approach to your health

o

STeoPATHy IS oNe of the fastest growing professions in Australia - and Maleny can offer healing hands to those in need, thanks to Dr Kieran Schulz. Some people may wonder why they would need to see an osteopath. Keiran explains, “People usually pop in for a visit once they have already injured themselves - they might have neck or back pain; stiff and sore muscles or joints; or trouble doing certain activities in their day because of pain.” However, Kieran loves to see people being proactive about their muscular and skeletal health. “We all book our cars in

for a regular service and our bodies need the same sort of treatment. “If you have 'a bit of a sore shoulder' or 'that knee hurts when you walk up stairs' or you may just feel 'all twisted and out of whack', these little niggles are your body's version of a warning light on the dashboard!” By seeing a professional earlier on and having these niggles investigated it's a much easier recovery process. “But,” Kieran admits with a grin,”in saying that, I love the challenge of chronic pain!” Kieran graduated from the european School of osteopathy in 2010 and, after gaining Australian registration, started working at one of Brisbane’s leading osteopathic clinics, Move osteopathy, in Brisbane’s New Farm. In addition to osteopathy, Kieran offers dry needling and functional taping. “It is like having extra tools in my toolbox; so I will always combine these techniques with conventional manual therapy interventions like massage, stretching, exercise and joint manipulation. Pregnancy Massage Pregnancy enhances your beauty, promoting an inward focus. Mama Bear Massage helps you spend nurture time with your body, and your baby. A massage brings relief to achey joints and lower back, reduces fluid retention, releases neck and shoulders, and prepares your body for the journey. We use an organic coconut and vanilla butter mixture, to avoid any of the sensitivities pregnancy can bring to mum and baby. You’ll be safely reclining on your side with supportive pillows and towels. Areas challenged by your pregnancy are guided back to their inherent softness by experienced hands. Check with your doctor before making an appointment. It’s a good idea to continue with massage after your miracle arrives, to keep the spine and pelvis in alignment in the following months. And best of all…massages make great gifts for mama bears…

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You

How the dosha types plan their year

A

S FeBRUARy CoMeS around we are all starting to get back into the swing of day to day life. Lazy days of lying Wendy Rosenfeldt around reading books and swimming in the ocean can seem like a distant memory. How we proceed with the coming year and how well we stick to our plans is largely determined by our nature. Ayurveda identifies three mind-body types but we can be a combination of all three. Vata types are generally light in build with a tendency towards dry hair and skin, they are quick in their thoughts, speech and movements. Their digestive systems and bodily cycles tend to be sensitive and can be easily upset by stress and travel. They are enthusiastic and changeable in nature and prefer creative pursuits and flexible routines. People with a predominance of Pitta tend to have medium builds and a tendency towards sensitive or freckly skin. Pitta types have good intellects and like to know how things work. They are usually organised, punctual but can tend to be perfectionists. Their digestive systems are robust and they need to eat meals on time. Kapha types have a bigger build and more oil in their skin. They have thicker hair and larger features. They are slow and methodical by nature and have good endurance and emotional stability. They gain weight more easily than the other types and generally sleep long and deeply. Vatas may begin the year with lots of new projects and resolutions. Their enthusiasm can see them take on too much and burn out. Their quick minds and changeable natures can see them abandon one scheme for something new before they have even

given it a chance. For Vata predominant people it is important to pace yourself, get plenty of rest and create a predictable routine of eating, sleeping and exercise. Vata types have the tendency to get absorbed in something and forgot to eat only to end up feeling spaced out. Pitta people are very good at setting goals and routines and sticking to them. However their powerful intellects can sometimes get in the way of having a balanced life. They can tend to be workaholics, putting all their energy into getting a project right while neglecting their family. They might decide that they will only eat raw food from some idea that it is healthy for them, sticking to it regardless of how their body feels. Pitta types need to remember to have fun and not let themselves be ruled by their minds. Sometimes it is ok to ease of your rigid exercise program to play with your children or eat food that is off your diet list just because you really crave it. People with more Kapha in the constitution are generally more laid back about life and are happy to go on year after year in the same job, routine, relationship etc. They don’t have a burning desire to make changes but they can sometimes get stuck in a rut. Kapha natured people find it harder to start new things but once they have introduced a new exercise program or dietary change they are quite good at sticking to it. For Kapha it is important to exercise regularly and include some stimulation in their lives; this could be cooking new dishes or taking up a new activity or sport.

TS LIKe A PUSH from inside that brings a clarifying sense of what needs to change in our lives. Its an instinctive urge to let go of what’s not needed, to clear out, to sort out, to rethink what’s really of value. Its like we are reaching for something that we cant fully name but that on a very deep level we are ready for. The shift is planetary, the shift is personal. Its good at times like these to pause and feel deeply into what is seeking expression through us. Change for the sake of change is not always good, growth for the sake of growth is not always good. Perhaps we could start with ourselves, small changes here can provide a stable ground to make the whole process of unfolding and realigning a positive and constructive experience. Use the momentum of this time, so that you don’t fall back into the habitual pattern of running on the treadmill of daily existence. Take nothing for granted, celebrate everything that brings your heart joy. Reexamine the things that steal your days from you. Make a clear mind and a healthy body a joyful goal, update your knowledge about the research that is demonstrating the wonder of your being beyond just the physical. See how powerful you are on an energy level, how amazing your mind is and how it can heal your body. Understand the force of your

emotions and how it can heal or destroy your body. I constantly see positive changes in my patients blood tests and their well being just from a shift in their understanding and sense of empowerment that comes about through potent but simple changes. Think about what you put into your mouth, this affects not just your physical health, it profoundly affects your mental and emotional clarity. just because something is sold as food or because its presented as the latest health fad doesn’t really mean its good for your health. Don’t just block out your symptoms with distractions or products of any kind, learn to listen to your body, you know that how you think and feel, affects the choices you make and you know that your feelings and your thoughts originate from something within you that is seeking expression. one of my greatest joys is seeing how lives change for the better after a few sessions that educate and empower my patients. Physiotherapy can change quality of life dramatically and it can literally add life to years for our aging population.

Do you or someone you know need assistance to remain independent at home?

WHo’s most recent report on Ageing and Health highlights the benefits to both individuals and governments in using physiotherapy.

Hinterland Home Assist

APA President, Marcus Dripps, said that the health of older Australians is one of the most important social, medical and economic challenges facing Australia.

AGED & DISABILITY HOME CARE

“ABS data shows that more than half of all people aged 65 years and over (56% or 1.4 million) had at least one form of disability lasting - or expected to last - at least six months and which restricted everyday activities,” he said.

Someone to Help Experienced, fully qualified and insured Carer

“Physiotherapy significantly improves people’s quality of life as they age – keeping them actively mobile through evidence-based treatments that treat and prevent injuries.”

Available by the hour, day or night respite. Personal or palliative care, house duties, meals, transport to/from appointments or simply a coffee...

“We want to help keep Australians healthy and active so that they can enjoy every stage of their lives.” Many people have little understanding of the important role health experts such as physios play in the maintenance of a functioning, strong and healthy body.
