usTRALiA DAy is a controversial date for many on the Hinterland it was all about community. There was a breakfast in Montville, congratulations to the awards winners, and we saw new citizens welcomed to our country across the region. There was an immense choice of activities for families and individuals at the MDsRC Aussie Day Expo - an wonderful example of mass volunteerism in all its glory. Then a remembrance ceremony at the RsL, and live music and fun at the pub. The Australian Film Festival was also a superb example of what locals are capable of. The shorts The Boggabilla Bus (hilarious!), The (clever, clever) Eleven O'Clock and the touching Mrs McCutcheon were even better than the mains.

i personally liked Ali's Wedding best, and the treats of more delicious food and music across the road afterwards!

- where everyone claps at the end? Best bring a cushion or two if you want to blend in!

Congratulations to everyone who brought these events to fruition, you'll see from our pages that there is much to look forward to in February. But the Australia Day weekend was also fraught with tragedy. i was so saddened to hear that a local family lost their seventeen-year-old daughter. i can't imagine the pain they and her friends must be feeling after her accident. And there has been more loss in our community in the last month, with those who have sought suicide as their only way out. i am missing three of my kids terribly, now our household is just our youngest and us. But events like this put it all into perspective. Hug them close.

i found out that 12% of Malenyites are members of the Film society. And why wouldn't you be? Where else can you watch a movie with so many locals, with a bar (and often catered)

KNOW A GOOD handful of children who are obsessed with origami – it is fantastic for the developing mind: creative, and encouraging mindfulness through the art of concentration. so, when i saw Chiyogami Designs open in shop1 on the Obi Obi Road in Mapleton, i was curious to look inside. Most people know origami is the art of paper folding; ori meaning folding, gami meaning paper and is notably associated with Japan – although historically it also appears in Europe and China.

Andrea Walker’s own love affair with origami began when she visited her brother in Japan in 2010. “i saw some lovely paper over there while i was looking for Christmas presents for my ‘crafty’ friends. “i had an excess when i came home, so i thought i’d try to sell it on eBay. it sold quickly; so, when my brother next came to visit he brought some more, which also sold.” Andrea noticed a gap in the market for authentic Japanese origami paper and soon found a wholesaler in Japan. “i won’t get it anywhere else,” she shares, “because i find the Japanese paper is always perfectly square, which is vital.” As time went on, Andrea noticed that ‘washi tape’ would appear on her screen when she searched for anything to do with origami. “i thought, ‘what is this stuff?’ and put in a small order for 300 rolls in 30 patterns. The meaning of washi is wa for Japanese, and shi for paper, and the paper is made using the fibres of the from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the paper mulberry or the mitsumata shrub. “The tape is sticky and made from this paper, and it is also re-positionable, which is great for card making, scrap booking and design.” Her initial order soon sold out on eBay. “i’ve now bought in about 100,000 rolls, and sold tens of thousands – i’ve even sold them back to Japan! The quality and designs are excellent, and i think i may have the biggest display in the southern Hemisphere.” The shop came about relatively recently, which is the perfect place to showcase this vast selection. “We have had a holiday home in Kenilworth for years, as i had to live in Brisbane for my work as an accountant.

Opposite page: Andrea with her wonderful wall of washi Above: An impromptu origami workshop

“On the weekends we would drive up to Mapleton for coffee and i always loved it. i had a pop-up shop in Kenilworth, where the doctors’ surgery used to be. i was supposed to be there for four weeks, but ended up there for nearly nine months! “i heard about this vacant shop, and knew i would love to open here, and we now live permanently in Kenilworth.” Andrea’s partner, Tony Kalman, a cabinet-maker, built her a foldable ‘wall’ full of shelves for her tape and paper. “it’s my ‘wonderful wall of washi’,’ Andrea smiles. “Tony made it for the Tassie Craft Fair in 2014 and now it is perfect in the shop.” Andrea herself loves crafts, she has tried knitting, patchworking, lead lighting, and painting – however it was origami paper and washi tape that opened her to scrap booking and even jewellery making. “i make earrings, pendant and hair clips using washi tape, origami and Japanese postage stamps. They look beautiful and different from anything else, i think.” Encouraging others to create with these designs, is something Andrea is passionate about. “i have had a few workshops here, and would love to do more. They were all booked out.” The first workshop was ‘Playing with Paper’: “We made a journal cover, folded and collaged it to put a book into. The second workshop was repurposing a suspension file: “We took off the metal piece and created a three-fold booklet. you could add pages to it, put things in it, create pockets.” Andrea shows me hers and it really is a lovely, original and useful work of art. The third and fourth workshops concentrated on card making. “Karen who works at the local QML ran the workshops, she is very talented and makes some of the Christmas cards in the shop.” Andrea also likes to support local artists who can do things with her tape and paper. “Linda Jones from Dulong uses it in her acrylic work, and other mediums. Lissy Henderson of Buderim creates beautiful watercolours with a layer of washi tape.” Both artists have work for sale in the shop. Whilst i am there, Andrea sits with my children and an impromptu workshop begins, creating tiny origami butterflies. They are completely absorbed. “i always welcome people who would like to create or run workshops here. Two art therapy teachers from ‘Playing with Possibilities’ ran my first two workshops, as they saw how origami can be such a valuable exercise in art, focus and fun. “i’ve also met a paper maker who

i hope will run a workshop, so i think this will certainly be an area that grows for the shop.” Chiyogami itself is a particular type of Japanese paper, woodblock-printed in bright colours and patterns. “The word means ‘one thousand generations of paper’,” says Andrea. “And i love that it has such a rich history.” it appears, on first impressions, that Chiyogami Designs is certainly bringing that rich history to some of the local generations here, and long may it continue. Visit: www.chiyogamidesigns.com for more information, or visit the shop Friday to Sunday, 10am – 3.30pm.

When long-term Montville resident, Les Gittins, told local historian and Montville Village Association President, Deb Davis, about getting into trouble for learning Italian better than English as a two-yearold, she smelt a story. This story involved Italian POWs from 1944-1945 and how they integrated into Montville.

Rations and Song by Montville Historical Group

EG AND MOLLy Gittins, farmed Baroon Pocket, Montville, for many years, but it was on their earlier dairy farm carved out of the rainforest west of Conondale, that their son, Les, encountered the POWs who taught him italian. Reg had applied to use italian POWs as labourers on the farm. The deal was that he housed and fed them although they did receive rations of bedding, clothing, toiletries, preserved food and snacks from the army. From 1944 to 1945, Antonio De Lycia, Antonio De stefano, Vincenzo Guercia, Giovanni Crescenzi, Antonio Arru and Diomede Del Romano all worked on the Gittins’ farm in pairs. As a two-year-old at the time, Les doesn’t remember much about them, but the family memories are of hard working, happy-go-lucky men who much preferred farm work to POW camps. Apparently, they were also fascinated about how Australian farmers used the axe as the universal farm tool. Molly was not impressed that Les’ italian was better than his English, so his contact with these sociable POWs was restricted. Les Farmer, Tinned Peaches 2017, was a young teen and so remembers more about the italian POWs on Montville farms. He remembers them as being regarded as good workers on Montville’s pineapple farms, decent fellows who were storytellers and good singers. He recalls listening to their powerful tenor voices from his home as they drifted across the Montville night. He reflects that they moved through the community with

freedom and weren’t seen as dangerous. They claimed to be reluctant soldiers who never supported italy’s involvement in the war and celebrated the peace along with the locals. One issue of potential friction was that they received as rations things that locals could not get, like tinned peaches and chocolate. However, they traded these for fresh fruit like bananas and shared the sweets with the local kids. Farmers also received a ‘fuel ration’ to transport them to the nearest Catholic Churches which were in Nambour and

Palmwoods. This was reputedly a very generous 3/3/44 ration at a time when fuel was in short supply for civilian farmers, so many were more 5/3/44 than happy to take advantage of this. The photograph of an 10/3/44 outing at Manjalda Guest House depicts farmers and 10/3/44 POWs socialising together and suggests that they were largely accepted in the 14/6/45 community. (Tinned Peaches, 2017) The table lists the Montville and Flaxton farmers who used italian POWs between 1944 and 1945 as indentured labourers, and the names of the POWs themselves who were billeted on their farms. (Australian War Archives) The Montville Historical Group is keen to contact any descendants of either group to flesh out this intriguing but little-known war story that helped shape the community we have become. if you can help, please contact Cate Patterson at cate.patterson@jayb.com.au

Coffin Club?

If someone says !"#$%!&'($$!)*+%"(%,-. ... ask me!

Arranging a funeral used to be a business-like and sombre affair, but times are changing and people are beginning to put their personal touches to this emotional final farewell. Gay Liddington has been hearing about how to make things bearable, and even therapeutic, through the Coffin Club.

HERE is ONGOiNG debate regarding the funeral industry. Regulation or deregulation? Does less regulation provide more scope to the end user or does increased regulation provide less wroughts? No doubt this debate will continue on its roller coaster ride. in the meantime, innovative endeavours find solid ground and an army of supporters. i grew up in an era where it was unthinkable to talk about death and dying. Generally, children did not attend funerals. My beloved Nana died when i was five years old. Just over a year later my baby brother and favourite uncle passed away in the same month. My memories of that time are like looking into a broken mirror. One day they were there and then they weren’t. People around me were

crying, me and my siblings had to be quiet. We didn’t understand why. How different it could have been had we been included in the ceremony to farewell our loved ones. We could have felt the sadness and gained understanding rather than being left with a chasm of confusion. sixty years on i see we are emerging from an era where the ‘adults only’ funeral protocol with sombre suits and black clothing is fading into the background. Promotions from a competitive funeral industry and the emergence of multi-faceted media have gone a long way to initiating conversation and creativity about such matters. Coffin Clubs in New Zealand was recently brought to my attention. The first of which was founded by former palliative care nurse Katie Williams in 2010. This idea

appealed to my warped sense of humour and prompted me to explore further. The idea was to bring seniors out of the closet and into the casket so to speak! Members gather in an atmosphere where creativity abounds amid cuddles, cupcakes, cuppas and music. Those with woodworking skills teach their craft. Artists share their talents and techniques. Above all, friendships are founded and conversations about mortality are woven into living stories. Death becomes part of life. Following on from the New Zealand example, Australia’s first Coffin Club was established in ulverstone, Tasmania in 2016. The Lion’s Club, Central Coast Council and the District Nurses lent their support. i spoke with social worker Lynne Jarvis about their Community Coffin Club. “it was an initiative of Care Beyond Cure, a group that assists people with a diagnosed progressive illness… 1 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/22/the-coffin-club-elderly-newzealanders-building-their-own-caskets 2 http://www.dyingtoknowday.org/stories/2017/7/21/australias-first-coffin-club

someone who may be in the last year or two of their life. “People come along once a fortnight often with a carer and have free access to beautiful sessions like reflexology, massage, art, Tai Chi, yoga and mindfulness. “Our Coffin Club came about as an identified need from a person attending the group.” Lynne is one of many volunteers with Care Beyond Cure and a lead volunteer with the ulverstone Community Coffin Club. she had long known about the New Zealand endeavour through visiting her sister in Rotorua and explains the dynamics of the group. “it’s not like other clubs in the sense of accumulating members. We have about five regulars including a mentor and his assistant who come along every week. “individuals who make a coffin are always members even after they leave, because they’ve been through the process. “People can craft a coffin that is a piece of furniture. Last April we made a bookcase coffin to raffle at Eco Fest,” said Lynne while i couldn’t help but smile at the mind-bending

idea of raffling a coffin. Lynne says that their Coffin Club provides an opportunity for families to come together. “it is important for people to be aware that it can be fun. However, you can’t take away from the fact that at times there are people with Maria Methorst second from left terminal illnesses and their families with three of her are making a coffin for their loved 17 children (L-R) one. That particular process is just Roel Methorst, totally amazing for everyone Fiona Methorst involved. and Patricia “At one point, two daughters Viney from a family of 17 children started Image by Lynne Jarvis making their mother a coffin. The mother came the first time and at one point there were about 11 family members including a great, great grandchild helping make that coffin. it was absolutely gorgeous.” Lynne owns up to not having any great woodworking skills however, she is the chief photographer. Photographs of the process of making the coffin are made into a DVD and set to their theme song, sia’s ‘Angel by the Wings’. i enquired as to the social aspect of the ulverstone club. “Cake? When we remember to bring one to share,” said Lynne with a note of humour. “People can actually call in…they don’t even have to be making a coffin. They can just come for a chat and see what we are doing. Next year we hope to have other sessions in the social room that will be running alongside the Coffin Club.” it seems that ulverstone’s Community Coffin Club has sparked off a wave of interest in Australia. in 2018 two new club’s will be launched in Tasmania and one in Victoria. i spoke with friends and asked their thoughts on the notion of a local Coffin Club. Expressions like time-share and coffin hopping were offered. Colourful Maleny character, 77-year-old Cheryl Laizans said, “i think it would take off like wildfire. After all, we do live in geriatric heaven up here! imagine telling your grandchildren you belong to a Coffin Club, its purpose and meaning. Might they attend a session and make their artistic mark on your casket? Then when the time comes for that person to farewell you they know firsthand what it’s about and have played a part in your story. ‘All aboard!’ this living history at Palmwoods

The original Palmwoods railway precinct was quite something back in 1915, and the same view can be seen today stepping off the train - passengers were greeted by an elaborate mix of platform sellers, residents and a view of the newly opened ES&A bank with its elegant bank residence. uRiNG 1915, some 11,486 passengers arrived at Palmwoods to a fanfare by locals, eager to see people and enjoy the social occasion. The train arrival generated excitement for the people of Palmwoods, and brought with it the mail in the travelling post office. Guests to the town were invited to enjoy “a jolly good time” reported the Nambour Chronicle at the opening of the Palmwoods Hotel in 1912. The hotel itself was described as one of “a very fine appearance overlooking the railway station and most conveniently placed”. The hotel and bank site with the remaining buildings form the original railway precinct. This was the centre of town with dirt roads meeting at the railway gate crossings to travel east-to-west of the township. The history of Palmwoods has been extensively researched by numerous historians, including Wendy McMullin and Trevor Robinson, and their work is being complemented by a permanent photo display in the

Palmwoods Memorial Hall. According to Wendy, the surge of building in Palmwoods in early 1900 was no coincidence. “Palmwoods was one of the key towns on the north coast line (sunshine Coast) for mail, freight and passengers,” Wendy shared. “With the terminus of the PalmwoodsBuderim Tram, the town’s rail expansion opened the area to both farming and tourism. “The establishment of the bank buildings occurred the same time as the line opened for the Palmwoods-Buderim Tramway in 1915.” The grocery store was built in 1910 by Henry smith and has continued to trade as a grocery store since then, with a number of owners including Walter Collins who built what is known as Collins house, a magnificent Queenslander that also sits in the original heritage precinct. “The largest building in the station precinct is the Palmwoods Hotel,” said Wendy. “Following its opening in 1912 it quickly established a wealth of patronage from all over Australia. “With a poker room on the first floor verandah, a healthy local farming economy, and the establishment of the sunshine Coast day tourism, the hotel walls have many stories to tell.”

Tourists often stopped off for a period at the hotel whilst waiting for the connecting journey to the Coast via the Palmwoods to Buderim tram. Essential to the establishment of the town, and the greater sunshine Coast was the Es&A bank and managers residence located next to the hotel. “Highly respected, if not the most highly respected person in town was the bank manager. Townsfolk tell stories of handshake deals done over a cup of tea on the veranda of his residence.” When Palmwoods local Trevor Robinson was building his house in Churchill street, the bank manager had noticed Trevor building “piece by piece”, said Trevor and he stopped to chat. “He said come on down to the bank. He took my name and that was that. i signed a paper but nothing like today. The $2000 loan at two and a half percent interest or less i paid off in no time, eighteen months or so.” Es&A banking played an important role in all business, no less than the local ginger industry. in a report written by Joan Hogarth on Buderim Ginger, she writes, “As the only organisation legally empowered to offer the commodity ginger as security for finance, the Board obtained a £3000 loan from the English, scottish and Australian Bank to pay the growers for the ginger they delivered to the factory”. The Palmwoods Es&A bank sub branch was located at the Buderim tramway station and manned by Palmwoods staff that travelled on the tram a few days per week to do the Buderim banking. Heritage advocate, Meredith Walker, renowned nationally for her work in community circles and local government says the English, scottish and Australian bank buildings, the Palmwoods hotel and station hub were instrumental in illustrating the pattern and development of railway towns in Queensland, particularly on the north coast line. “in small towns, accommodation was often provided for staff of the post office, police station, railway station and the bank. These buildings and those staff were very important. “The business with the residence shows the importance

of the staff.” Ms Walker said, “The managers were the elite class of the town…and their residence reflected this.” The Palmwoods, Montville, Buderim Fruitgrowers building still remains today with ongoing restoration by owners intent to preserve of the value of heritage buildings, and the railway station was revamped in original paint colours, at the request of Palmwoods Living History society. The Pictorial History of Palmwoods Exhibition will be launched sunday February 11 with viewing from 1-3 pm and the official launch at 2pm. Palmwoods Living History society President, yvonne Dalziel, said, “The most difficult task was choosing which photographs to frame with the funds provided through the sunshine Coast Council Heritage Grant Funding, but we will expand the exhibition as more photographs and funds become available.” The book, Take a Walk Around Palmwoods, is also available for purchase. ARE YOU A COMPANY DIRECTOR The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. Directors are expected to: • Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total non-participation is impermissible; • Understand the role that a Director performs; • Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis. Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for. It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts “as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence: • when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or • when the Company incurred the debt the Director had relied upon the information from a subordinate; or • that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or • that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt. It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

HiNTERLAND TiMEs – FEBRuARy 2018

Two-hour parking will be enforced between 8am – 5pm every day in Maple Street, Myrtle Street, Bicentenary Lane, Coral Street, Fig Street, Teak Street, Willow Lane and Lawyer Street

Watch your clock when you park in Maleny

T

HE TWO-HOuR PARKiNG time limit in the business district of Maleny has been regulated to improve accessibility for residents, visitors and businesses. The two-hour time limit has been in place for many years, however until this time has been self-regulated, relying on motorists to ensure they don’t overstay the limit. Council started an education campaign in August 2017 to advise motorists, and commenced regulating the two-hour parking areas this month. As a part of the education program, council officers visited each business in the area and distributed hundreds of parking fact sheets to shops and the Visitor information Centre. New two-hour parking signage has also been installed throughout the relevant streets. Division 5 Councillor, Jenny McKay, encouraged motorists to be mindful of the two-hour limit. “The business district of Maleny has long been a two-

hour parking zone, with signage at each entrance to the area,” Cr McKay said. “However over time, locals and business owners have found that motorists were long overstaying the time limit, significantly impacting on the availability of parking for visitors and shoppers in the area.” Maleny Commerce president spencer shaw said adequate parking and regular turnover was vital to support the Maleny business community. “Having council support to regulate parking in the Maleny business district will be a huge help and we appreciate the business and community’s support in adhering to the two-hour parking limit.” A workshop involving invited representatives of community groups, business and industry organisations, government agencies and Council, to examine the management of unlawful parking of vehicles on road verges in the region, will be held on February 12.

What is in a

Landershoot signs are a little conflicting - how is it spelt?

W

E HAD A FEW queries about a particular area in Palmwoods, after our recent story on Di Easdale and her Christmas lights display in ‘Landers shoot’. And, despite various opinions, research and historical anecdotes, the answer is still not clear. Here is some of the correspondence we received from Hinterland residents and our own team: Hello Michelle...The article re Landers Shoot intrigues me and and begs the question of what is the correct spelling of this area..Various street signs and maps in the area show three different spellings...Can you advise which is the correct spelling please ?? Not the biggest problem in the world today. Cheers. - Stan McCallum Regarding your headline "Lighting up Landers shoot" (Hinterland Times, Dec 2017), i wonder what is the explanation for an apparent anomaly in the naming of this area? Why does Landershute Rd lead to Landers shoot? i am not a native of the area, but i understand this odd name arose from logging on the Blackall Range. shutes were formed through the forest to send logs hurtling down the hillside, and presumably there was a timber-getter named Landers. Or did Mr Landers reserve some land there for hunting with guns? More likely, "shute"(or chute) was an unfamiliar word to whoever in Brisbane put names on maps! This is born out by Wikipedia. - Ted Webber

Edmund Lander leased the area known as the Mooloolah Back Plain from the Queensland colonial government in 1861. [1] He, harvested the timber along the Blackall Range, along with other pioneers. When the timber was harvested, the bark was stripped, making them slippery from the sap and a sharp point was made on one end of the tree. The tree was then pushed over the eastern side of the cliff down "chutes" (to be collected at the bottom, and transported to the nearest mills).[2][3] Landers shoot was the base region where the logs arrived at the base of the cliff. The official sign for the area says 'Landers shoot', as does a digital search with Google Maps and Wikipedia... although there are two roads called upper Landershute and Lower Landershute! However, there was a nearby area called Remington’s shute shown on survey maps in the late 1800s, according to sam Remington, whose grandfather was reputedly one of the first white settlers in Montville. More information on this is can be found on the Montville Historical Group website, and lends to the spelling possibly being Lander’s shute.

Di Easdale corrected my spelling to Landers Shoot when I wrote her piece. - Victoria McGuin (HT sub-editor and author of the Landers Shoot article). 1] slade, Carolyn (2010). I have seen variously Schute, Shute, Shoot, Chute. I think Schute is most likely what we should use. I think it originates from the German Schute and always refers to the drop-off from the range where timber was sent down to be collected at the bottom - a fast and furious way of getting logs off the mountains. - Dale Jacobsen, HT writer, author and resident historian

interesting....my stepdad who lived in Maleny as a child growing up and then later in life ....says Lander shute and so does my mum who worked for the Maroochy shire council for a very long time....perhaps this has been changed over time. - Karen Muir, HT sales Representative

LiZABETH TELLs us, "you have heard restaurants talking about paddock–to-plate. Well, People, Plates & Places reverse that concept and we take the people and the plates to the places where the food is grown. "Every lunch is at a different location. We are a restaurant without walls! Our menus are one-off because it depends on the produce available on the day,” Elizabeth continues. “Our chef prepares everything on site in our purpose-built outdoor kitchen, and our guests get to tour the property, interact and learn from the producers and the chef.”

Chef Dale Chapman creates modern cuisine infused with a selection of Australian native plants

so how did a fashion manufacturer/ international learning consultant, and a management consultant/war veteran end up in creating one-off long table foodie events? By combining their love of the outdoors and environment with the enjoyment of simple dining experiences and savouring wines. People, Plates & Places became a natural choice for their next business venture. Tony believes in improving food knowledge to help with nutritional awareness. “Healthy eating flows from fresh, local seasonal and trustworthy food sources and consistent and ethical food production practices which promote sustainability.” According to Tony there is a trend to ‘clean eating’, suggesting more people are leaning towards health and wellness. instead of staid food brands, the couple say fresh, local, seasonal and sustainable are the four benchmarks they use. "By learning from our local growers, producers, and chefs we can all share in this effort for our future generations." What better way to do this than sitting in the middle of a paddock, on a mountain side or at a beach and savouring the freshest of food and wine? People, Plates & Places invite you to sample Chef Dale Chapman's five-course tapas style communal meal at internationally acclaimed nutritionist, Cyndi O’Meara's Changing Habits Farm on March 3 at 4.30 - 8.30pm. Having grown up in Dirranbandi, Dale has become a champion of native foods in everyday cooking. Renowned for her creative use of ancient indigenous ingredients, Dale’s First Food Co will feature as an official merchandise supplier during the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast this year. The business develops a range of jams, teas, relishes and curry sauces for the export and home markets, among many other products. Owner of the farm, Cyndi O’Meara, an internationally acclaimed nutritionist, and her husband Howard are collaborating with scott Robinson from Polyculture to develop a showcase permaculture property. Their vision is to create an organic food landscape, that includes many native plants, using the principles of holistic management and permaculture in order to feed our family, friends and community an organic source of local, fresh, produce. They do this by nurturing the soil and the microbes that live within, to create health for those that depend upon its bounty. Their animals are treated with kindness, fed a natural diet free from chemicals and GM goods, and they are allowed to enjoy an outdoor life. Taste the traditional bush tucker ingredients and food, carefully matched Woongooroo Estate wines, and a taste of sunshine Coast Cider, while talking with all those involved in making this a memorable food experience.

OMMuNiTy AssisTANCE is needed to find out where our frogs are living, in and around the Mary River catchment (from Maleny to Hervey Bay and west to Conondale and Kilkivan) and coastal areas from Peregian to Burrum Heads and Fraser island (K’Gari). Frogs are a vital component of ecosystems and are easily affected by changes in the air, water and land: they are good indicators of the environmental health of our region! But they are in trouble world-wide due to habitat loss, pollution and disease. We can ALL help them if we know where they live! if you live in: sunshine Coast Hinterland, Noosa, Gympie and Fraser Coast Council regions, get involved in community frog monitoring in February 2018. Collect data to help improve the plight of frogs through awareness and thoughtful management. Just recently the Australian Museum has launched their new Frog iD App which is an excellent tool to help with frog identification, including comparing frog calls. A Frog Finders Guide and data sheets can be downloaded from the MRCCC website or by calling the MRCCC office. The website contains instructions, useful frog information, images and upcoming workshop dates. MALENY TRAVELLER

Escape to deserted islands, see large lizards, unique cultures...rarely visited by foreigners since colonial times OFTEN, A KEY KNOCK-OUT TRIVIA QUESTION WAS – ‘WHERE ARE THE ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS’? So last season, I was personally intrigued and delighted to discover my favourite Asian river cruise company Pandaw was venturing along the coast of the Andaman Sea...the answer to the trivia question...but you knew that didn’t you? Because of the positive reaction, Pandaw has decided to extend the duration of some of their selected future voyages from seven to 10 nights. This voyage on a classic 1960’s motor yacht will cover the entire coastal distance between Rangoon and Kawthaung. Pandaw has now fully recce’d these lively coastal ports, so evocative of Kipling, Maugham and Collis, finding them full of architectural charm and reflecting colonial or Buddhist pasts. They have also identified key islands, some with communities of Karen Baptists, while on others, you will find Moken or sea gypsies who speak a strange sort of Malay. The majority of islands are totally deserted with pristine white beaches, corals, diverse bird and sea life, not to mention the odd reptile such as, large monitor lizards. These new voyages will include exciting stops at old coastal ports of Moulmein, Mergui and Tavoy. In addition, you explore several little known islands with opportunities to snorkel, or kayak up the rivers into old mangrove forests. Pandaw is recognised for their traditional colonial style river boats with polished timber decks, comfortable cabins with ensuite, food with a French influence. Plus attentive service from friendly English speaking local staff, with no ‘over the top’ glitz. Just a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere throughout your cruise experience. M.Y. Andaman Explorer is an exciting addition to their fleet offering a choice of itineraries along the Myanmar (Burma) Coast – 10 nights or the Mergui Archipelago for 7 nights. Cruise cost is inclusive of excursions, most drinks, private dining and expert guides. If you are on our email list look out for the Andaman Explorer ‘s visit to the Mergui Archipelago... it will make you Wanna Go! “We’ve done the Irrawaddy River and been to Bagan and Mandalay. We wanted to see a different side of Burma, away from the temples and tourists. These islands are beautiful and remote – an escape from modern-day life with no phone or Wi-Fi signal. A true digital detox.”

sellout uTsPOKEN BEGiNs its 2018 season with a major event: a conversation with scottish author Alexander McCall smith. Mr McCall smith is making one of his occasional visits to Australia and has kindly agreed to return to Maleny to discuss his recent books with local author, steven Lang. Alexander McCall smith is one of the world’s most popular authors. He began his career as a professor of medical law, working for many years in universities in the united Kingdom and abroad (including in his beloved Botswana). After the publication of his highly successful No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series – which has sold over twenty million copies – he devoted his time to writing fiction. His novels generally fall into different series – he is remarkably prolific – apart from the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency they include the 44 Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, The Sunday Philosophy Club series starring isabel Dalhousie, the von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions novels. Alexander has also written several stand-alone novels, as well as collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds

The Woman in the Window

Hungry

By A J Finn

By Anthea Amore

Anna Fox suffers from severe agoraphobia that confines her to her New york City home. she spends her days drinking wine, watching old movies, taking too many anti-anxiety pills… and spying on her neighbours. This is a very clever psychological suspense thriller that tips its hat to the old Hitchcock themes from ‘Rear Window’ but quickly evolves into something far more sinister. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger and who is in control? Things are not always as they seem. The Woman in the Window will keep you guessing as the characters develop in front of your eyes. This is an utterly gripping, page-turning and intoxicating thriller that lives up to all the hype surrounding it. Currently number one on the New york Times Bestseller list.

Hungry: for more crazy good vegan food is Anthea’s second cookbook and it is a lush and beautifully photographed compendium of all of her favourite recipes. Anthea has worked and managed cafés all around Australia and abroad throughout her career, in vegan cuisine, that spans nearly two decades. Veganism is one of the fastest growing ‘foodie’ trends around the world and Hungry proves that you don’t have to sacrifice flavour to enjoy delicious and nutritious food. Easy to follow instructions accompany full page photographs of each recipe. The recipes in this book are not only vegan but also gluten free, refined sugar free, nutrient rich, plant based foods that are not only good for you and your family but also great for the planet.

Little Red Riding Hood & Hansel and Gretel Retellings of fairy tales by the Brothers Grim Illustrated by Francesa Cosanti These two classic fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm have been given a whole new lease of life by prize winning italian illustrator Francesca Cosanti. The artwork that accompanies these well-known stories is truly mesmerising and original. From the bizarre to the sublime, Francesca’s artwork presents a spellbinding reinterpretation of these classic tales. Through surprising close-ups and unforgettably unique perspectives on the action, she follows her characters as they get lost in the woods, see a tempting gingerbread house or find a wolf in grandmother’s place. Check out Francesca’s art online at www.francescacosanti.com

Are You Nuts?

A

s i WRiTE THis i rejoice in the fact that the Bunya cones are falling (in fact they’ve been falling for the last month in varying stages of ripeness). i don’t rejoice so much that the nuts are falling, but more that they are landing and available to harvest! you certainly don’t want to be under them when they are falling or for that matter waiting to catch these babies, as they weigh up to 10kg! These delicious nuts are a great bonus to our diet and potentially free if you, your friend’s or a generous neighbour has some. The Bunya Pine was and still is an important part of the traditional owner’s culture and economy providing a huge crop roughly every 3 years. This bumper crop provides a great excuse for a big party, family reunions, making of law and so much more. Recent arrivals have also been taught the benefits of this great tree and we are lucky to have had this knowledge shared with us. Free food is always great and food that literally falls from the sky is even better – The Bunya Tree (Araucaria bidwillii) is one of the truly ancient members of our local forests. They hark back to the age of dinosaurs and were once widespread across the Australian and are part of the Araucariaceae family, that extends across

many of the southern land masses and also includes the Hoop Pines, Norfolk Pines and Monkey Puzzle Pine. These days Bunya Pine occurs naturally in one tiny patch of north Queensland and more locally as scattered populations between the sunshine Coast and Kingaroy (Bunya Mountains). Not only are these trees ancient, but quite exclusive about where they live – so we are lucky to share their neighbourhood with them! Bunya Trees are a Blackall Range icon and easy to grow. The starchy Bunya nut sends a root deep into the ground where it forms a thick tap root (like a radish) from which the tree shoots. They are a little bit slow to start off with but once they get going can grow a metre or two per year and can be fruiting at 12-15 years -just don’t plant them near your garage, shed, water tank, house etc. for what i hope are obvious reasons… Cooking with Bunya Nuts: boil for twenty minutes, then let them cool down enough to handle, the next bit is tricky and very, very importantly - don’t cut your fingers off! The husk on each individual nut is quite tough and requires a sharp knife and an equally sharp operator. Once you get the knack you’ll get a taste for bunya that’s hard to keep up with your cutting abilities!

Devil’s Claw Fig

s

iNCE BARuNG DREW attention to this nasty woody weed in 2015, also called Giant Devil’s Fig and Devil’s Apple, it has continued to spread. Following the wet weather latish last year and the heat that followed, it flowered and set seed, as these plants do. seedlings are now appearing in our gardens and other relatively open areas. When small, they do not have thorns near the base and are easy to pull out. The leaves are grey-green, not unlike wild tobacco, but developing lobes. Once the plants are larger, and they can grow up to 2m in height, they have large coarsely lobed leaves, whitish flowers and lots of thorns. spines measuring 4-10mm are present on the under-surface of the leaves, mainly along the midrib and lateral veins. it’s hard to miss, especially if you attempt to handle it. Wear thick gloves! Hence, remove the seedlings wherever you find them.

it is not a fig but a member of the solanum family, which includes wild tobacco, deadly nightshade, tomatoes, potatoes and Kangaroo Apple. A native of Central America, it is now naturalised along the east coast in higher rainfall areas from the NsW central coast to Queensland’s wet tropics and is usually seen growing along roads, in rainforest clearings, and now in gardens. Globular orange fruit 20-35mm in diameter contain many seeds, which are spread by various means, probably including birds, once the ripe fruit falls to the ground. unfortunately, the shrub also has a spreading root system from which young plants can appear some distance from the parent. it is really important to get rid of it before it fruits and before it becomes too large and hard to handle, literally.

if large plants are found, bag and bin any fruit. it is susceptible to herbicide but how it is applied will depend on the size of the plant. As it becomes more widespread, it will be increasingly difficult and costly to deal with. There are enough imported weeds here already!

Merchants A usTRALiAN GOVERNMENT has, in recent years, become debased - opportunist, secretive, polldriven, fixated on short-term political gain and unwilling to engage in serious issues when (as is always) they interfere with its internal wranglings. it has been depressing and demoralising, and the public has responded by branding our parliamentarians a bunch of untrustworthy go-getters, obsessed with their own well-being rather than the public good. unfair, perhaps – there many politicians who (initially at least) seek office for the right reasons, to enhance the national interest and indulge in honest debate about increasingly complex issues, attempting to involve the voters as partners rather than mere election fodder. There has been, for many of us at least, the hope and belief that the lucky country could again become what it once was – a forthright member of the world community, a vanguard for worthwhile change and reform. But after last week it will be hard to maintain that sanguine proposition – we have struck a new nadir, a depth of greed and amorality that is unlikely to be beaten. Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to allocate $3.8 billion (that’s $3,800,000,000 in real money) to promote the export of killing machines is the end of the road. since the conclusion of the second world war, if not before, Australia has generally been seen as a peacemaker – not a passive advocate of neutrality, but an active participant in the world wide movement for ending the arms race in a step to preventing, or at least mitigating, war and its causes. We have made our mistakes, most notably the disaster in Vietnam. But after that, our interventions in conflicts, although almost invariably ill-advised, have been more in the nature of holding operations than all out assaults. With all respect to our forces in Afghanistan and iraq, they were not about belligerence but defence against fanatical and unconscionable aggression. And in the meantime, we have taken part in many genuine peacekeeping operations: Timor and the solomons are among the most impressive but there have been others less publicised – Cyprus, to name but one. And perhaps more importantly, we have been a significant, and at times a leading, player in the international campaign for disarmament.

Australians have been involved in working to end nuclear proliferation, in the elimination of chemical weapons, in the abolition of landmines. There have been times when we have been more zealous than others, but our default position has been on the side of peace – the side of the angels. And it is this history that Turnbull has abandoned in what can only be seen as cynical betrayal of our (and we had thought his own) values and ideals in the desperate search for a few bucks. His attitude appears to be the rationale of every drug dealer, every provider of pornography – if i don’t do it. someone else will, so why should Australia not aspire to become one of the top ten world-wide merchants of death. And, of course, we (unlike every other merchant) will take stringent precautions to ensure that out guns, bombs, tanks, and whatever instruments of slaughter that our scientists can devise, will never be used illegally and unethically. The latter stricture may be seen as a contradiction in terms, but in fact it hardly matters: the obvious fact is that once we hand the arsenals over we lose all effective control of them. Turnbull’s warriors have already signalled their willingness – eagerness, indeed – to flog the stuff to just about anyone who will pay for it. Only a few weeks ago our ebullient Minister for industry, Christopher Pyne, was spruiking the sale of Australian weapons to saudi Arabia - those wonderful folks who brought us 9/11 and are now committing war crimes in yemen, before moving on to subdue their own dissenting citizens by any means they deem necessary. But, of course, the saudis are considered our allies – well sort of, they are the allies of our great and powerful friend, so near enough is good enough – and thus they are, by definition, worthy recipients of any horrors we can offer them – if, of course, the price is right. And it needs not be added (but will be interminably among the government’s talking points) that there will be jobs involved – well, there may be a few, and there would want to be at the cost of $3.8 billion. in fact, we can confidently predict just 3,800 jobs, eventually. We know that figure because the price of government assistance (read: taxpayer handouts) to

defence procurement works out at a cool one million for every new worker employed. But wait, there’s more – our killing machines will not only secure our own base for keeping up a steady supply of our own weapons (most of which are being licensed to foreigners anyway, and thus providing minimal profits to Australia), but revive our ailing manufacturer industry, the one successive governments have run into the ground. The once thriving automobile sector could have been saved by a fraction of the cost to be lavished on the warmongers, but that would have been economic irrationalism, picking winners and we couldn’t have that. Fortunately (and the only conceivable saving grace of the moral turpitude into which Turnbull is seeking to immerse us), we probably won’t have to: the experts in the field assure us that the already established merchants of death will effortlessly freeze out such a bumptious upstart, in what has become a seriously cut-throat (and that is itself a euphemism) industry. Let’s face it, they know all about real wars, so a trade war with an uppity neophyte should be a doddle. And if this happens (and frankly it should), Turnbull’s latest thought bubble will be revealed as an utter failure in every sense – not merely unforgivably depraved, but hugely wasteful and simply stupid. What a way to start the new year of rewards for all.

T

HERE HAsN’T BEEN much storm damage this month, just some vicious westerly winds exposing structural weaknesses in a few trees. Other than that, there have been some significant limb failures among the liquid ambers and the Figs. The liquid ambers fail, often in still conditions, when the lateral limbs get too long, and heavy with summer foliar growth. The failure point is usually a tight, acute angle fork with included bark, as we have discussed in previous articles. The Figs, which can generally hold incredibly long, heavy limbs at very flat angles, have failed when a fungus has weakened the junction where the limb meets the trunk.

you can self-assess your trees by looking for fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk, such as bracket fungi. These fruiting bodies are often evidence that the forces of decay are at work inside the tree. if you find fungi growing on the trunk and have concerns, call an arborist. summer is a great time for pruning hedges, trees and shrubs when you want to encourage lush vegetative regrowth. The Himalayan flowering ash, Fraxinus grifithii, is just finishing flowering, its creamy yellowishwhite flower heads making it easy to spot around the Range. it has massive weed potential, as it produces thousands of

HE MONTViLLLE Growers and Markers Market is on again this coming saturday February 10. Not stopping for a break, the monthly market continues into 2018 with over 30 stalls showcasing fresh local produce and locally crafted goods. Judith sinnamon, volunteer market co-ordinator, professional artist and teacher also runs a very special stall in February for the younger generation. "Easles, paint and paper will be out for young artists wishing to have a go. This month portraiture of self and others will be the theme." she remembers the last time portraiture was offered, "it happened to be before the elections markets so we had local politicians lining up for theirs. The kids were making and then had the option to sell their creation. it was very successful.

Hinterland Events

"i set up a red velvet chair and a big mirror - and they do it," said Judith. "i let them create, they need to vehicle to paint and the paper and the opportunity - children don’t always have a lot of opportunity to paint - and that's what we provide. All for a gold coin donation." Judith says there is something special about the way children see the world, and reminds us of Piccasso's quote, 'it took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child'. Whilst they are painting like the masters, you can fill your basket with local honey, crusty baked bread, marinated olives and freshly picked flowers and then treat the family to a pancake breakfast in the CWA annexe of our historic hall and meet some of the locals. A great meeting place for young and all. All welcome - 7.30am to midday, Montville Village Hall.

Choose wisely RangeCare

s

OMETiMEs CERTAiN health tests and treatments can cause harm and may not always be necessary. For that reason it is important to know what questions to ask your treating practitioner - no matter if he or she is a regular or alternative practitioner. Examples of harm are radiation damage caused by CT scans and antimicrobial resistance due to overuse and overprescribing of antibiotics. Also, the use of vitamins and supplements by people with healthy eating habits may be unnecessary (and can be costly). The global movement ‘Choosing wisely’ is supported by the Australian Government and helps the healthcare community and consumers to start a conversation about avoiding unnecessary and harmful tests, treatments, and procedures which can expose people to undue risks, emotional stress or financial costs. The Choosing Wisely site (www.choosingwisely.org.au) lists many examples, such as: feverish children without signs of a bacterial infection should not routinely take antibiotics; it is best to avoid x-rays in people with uncomplicated acute lower back pain and bronchitis; routine self-monitoring of blood glucose is not required for most people with type 2 diabetes who are on oral medication only. There are five excellent questions you can ask: Do i really need this test or treatment? What are the side effects or risks? Are there simpler or safer options? What would happen if we don’t test or treat but just watch and wait instead? What are the costs and are cheaper alternatives available? Always feel free to discuss this with your GP. We’re here to help.

N ANy WEEKDAy in the Hinterland, volunteer drivers from RangeCare, formally Blackall Range Care Group, can be found traversing the hills, providing a valued community service for our frailer range residents. These committed volunteers provide door-to-door transport to medical appointments for elderly clients and younger people with a disability, giving direct and practical assistance and making wonderful local connections. if you can picture yourself in the driver’s seat, chatting cheerfully en route to a local or coastal destination, RangeCare would love to hear from you. All out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed for volunteers. RangeCare’s Volunteer Coordinator, assures you of a very warm welcome, even if you are just calling for more information about this voluntary role. Please call RangeCare’s Flaxton office on 5445 7044 and join the rich spirit of volunteering in the hills!

KEy PROBLEM in any relationship is the negative influence of past experiences. if we Wendy Rosenfeldt have been hurt or let down many times, we come to expect that this will happen again regardless of how perfect the situation may be. We may be able to fall in love but then the ugly head of old hurts and insecurities can rear itself sabotaging our present happiness. During the infatuation phase of a romantic relationship the brain can go into an irrational state. The amygdala which is associated with being alert to danger and the anterior cingulate cortex which is responsible for critical thinking are turned way down. The “in love” brain displays circuits similar to states of obsession and runs on feel good neurochemicals such as dopamine and oxytocin. The brain becomes blind to the short comings of the object of our love while craving contact and intimacy with them. After the so called “honey moon” period the brain adjusts back to its more normal state of functioning. Devoid of the ecstatic rush of happy hormones, the scars of previous relationships begin to show. Our brain is wired up by repetition. We learn by doing the same thing over and over again until it becomes second nature. unfortunately this is also the case with repeated rejection or abuse in relationships. The brain can become wired up to expect to be hurt or disappointed. Paranoid behaviour can develop and cheating and put downs can be read into situations where there is nothing going on. if the other partner is mature and understanding the relationship will stand a better chance of survival but continual accusations where there is no substance can be challenging. Counselling can be helpful to understand the patterns of behaviour

but without getting to the cause it can be a very slow road to letting go of past trauma. Going over relationship failures can bring it all up again and sometimes make us feel worse. Transcendental Meditation rewires the brain for more positive brain states and naturally activates feel good chemicals. stress causes the brain to go into a primitive style of brain functioning. under excess pressure we go into flight and flight. The area of the brain responsible for moral reasoning gets bypassed and we act in a more impulsive, emotional way. Brain imaging of TM practitioners shows that their brains continue to act more holistically even in situations of high stress. During Transcendental Meditation deep rooted stress is released without even the knowledge of the cause of the particular stress. The body goes into a state of deep rest more profound than deep sleep. The body needs to get to this deeply rested state to release the physical tension that has been engraved there. We all carry stress in our body and for most people there will be an experience or person that can trigger a physical reaction. Maybe the tears start or the voice trembles or you feel angry and your blood pressure rises when you talk about that incident. Transcendental Meditation allows us to release the emotional charge of situations. Mentally and physically letting go of the tension caused from past relationships allows us to let go of emotional baggage and become the person and the partner we want to be. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

uR MiNDs ARE BRiLLiANT, out intuition is remarkable, our focus is extraordinary when we’re interested. We are designed to out picture perfect health and well being, when we are in alinement with natures laws and our inner awareness. We have the capacity to naturally experience prosperity when we are doing the work that serves others well and holds our attention enthusiastically. We feel confidence when we cease comparing ourselves to others and celebrate the uniqueness of our being. We shine, we thrive, when life makes sense. sometimes we forget to come back to ourselves to sit quietly within the sacred centre of our being and touch home base, to consider the miracles that we call life that have exploded on a daily basis all around us and its then that we look outside, perhaps too much, and try to problem solve, which can take us down some interesting detours. Listening to a wonderful series on the benefits of stem cell infusions today however i thought it interesting that we keep looking out there... where ever that is for each of us, when there

is so much scientific evidence that the mind can heal and the mind can make us sick. i think all therapies have value, they can and do support us while we discover the real source of our healing, the real source of our well being and the real source of our prosperity. Most of us do realize that what is in our diet largely impacts our health outcomes, our lack of exercise often stems from our lack of enthusiasm for life, our tiredness often stems from all the hurts and disappointments that weigh heavily on our beautiful hearts. without our realizing it the thoughts we think and the feelings they generate often stem unconsciously from the subtle messages we pick up from all forms of media. Let this be a year of finding yourself, of reigniting your enthusiasm, of investigating beyond the general news reports and finding out the wonderful things that are unfolding everywhere that aren’t reported and that can help us rediscover ourselves. ADVERTORiAL

Help your back with wise watering s PRiNG is HERE! Many of us love to tend to our plants. in our area, water restrictions may be so severe that using a hose to keep the garden alive is a thing of the past. you may be forced to take other measures to preserve your precious plants, but they come with hidden dangers. Watering garden beds and plants using a bucket or watering can is a great way to establish and maintain plants and reduce water wastage. But while buckets and watering cans are efficient, cheap, and easy to use, they have the potential to cause injury if you lift or carry them incorrectly. Wrist, shoulder and back pain is more likely when carrying heavy buckets and watering cans, and lifting awkward loads. Warming up with a few stretches can make a difference, and it’s worth stretching a bit more when you’re done. Here are some timely tips to minimise the risk of injury when lugging litres of water around to help keep both your garden and your body really healthy: • Always think before you lift. • When lifting, remember to bend your knees and not your back. Never twist your body when your back is bent. • Choose a bucket or watering can with a wide grip to reduce hand and wrist pain. • Never overfill your bucket. Only carry as much weight as you know you can lift comfortably. Tip: half fill buckets to lighten the load and help avoid wrist and shoulder pain.

• Try lifting two lighter buckets rather than one heavy bucket, so the load is distributed equally on each side of the body. Tip: use two-litre milk bottles for watering. • Always carry buckets and pour water as close to your body as possible. Holding any weight away from your body increases the stress on your upper body and back. • Place the bucket on a raised platform to fill it so you don’t have to lift it as far. Tip: try a stool or chair. • Make all movements smooth. Avoid jerking or twisting. • Ensure the pathway where you are carrying the buckets is free of trip hazards and choose the

flattest path possible. • Watch where you place your feet to avoid stumbling. Tip: wear comfortable, supportive shoes with non-slip soles. Listen to your body. if it hurts, stop. if the pain continues, your physio can recommend stretches and exercises to help you get fit for watering and gardening and so avoid injury.
