HE SuMMER READING Club invites children to dodge danger, outwit their arch nemesis and journey beyond their wildest imagination with their favourite stories, available from their Sunshine Coast Council library branch. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor jenny McKay said last year over 35,000 children and young people across Australia participated in the Summer Reading Club and over 260,000 books were read. “We invite children to become part of the growing Summer Reading Club community that is reaching across Australia,” Cr McKay said. “It is easy to enter - just register in person at any Sunshine Coast Library or Mobile Library, or complete the online registration form on Council’s library website or call 5475 8989. “From 13 December children are required to read five items of their choice over the summer holidays – these include books, magazines, comics, eBooks. Then they complete the reading log and hand it in to their
local library by 5pm Monday, january 19, 2015. “This year there are five fantastic prize packs up for grabs, including a massive book voucher, Adventure Time pack, LEGO Minecraft micro worlds, Craft pack and an Alpha Maze marble run.” Children are also encouraged to check the specially created Summer Reading Club website to find loads more stuff to win. There are some really cool prizes and other incentives for children along the way and winners will be notified by the end of january 2015. Led by the State Library of Queensland, in partnership with the Australian Library and Information Association and other state and public libraries, the Australian Summer Reading Club is an annual program that aims to encourage a continued love of reading and ongoing multi-literacy skills development among children and young people. Be sure to join in and head to council’s library website for full details.

HE MARY CAIRNCROSS Scenic Reserve’s world-class view of the Glasshouse Mountains could be matched by a worldclass discovery centre. Sunshine Coast Council has approved a building renewal project concept plan, allowing detailed design to be developed to a ‘shovel ready’ state. Divisional councillor jenny McKay said there was a long way to go for this project to become a reality, but finalising detailed designs was critical to successfully attract state or federal government funding. The project will include a new Discovery Centre, cafè, gift shop, elevated viewing platform, meeting theatrette, conservation research area and offices, and amenities for volunteers and staff. Cr McKay said the council-endorsed design would provide protection from the elements and would invite the rainforest inside, making it a more exciting, discoverable experience. “It will also include a welcome and orientation area, rainforest ecology, a living lab and research section and a kids’ education area,” she said. “Another section represents activity in the rainforest between dusk and dawn, giving visitors a full sensory experience of sound, light and visual displays to take them on a journey of discovery. “There are only two interpretive centres of this kind in Queensland and this is an opportunity not be missed.”

Opal is Australia’s national gemstone. Indigenous stories tell of a rainbow creating the colours of the gem as it hit the earth. Others call it the “Fire of the Desert”. Australia’s opal fields are bigger than those found in the rest of the world, combined. Victoria McGuin went to meet the “Opal Queen of Coober Pedy” whose life is shaped by these gems.

Underground
by Victoria McGuin
I
CONFESS, I’ve never really been “into” opals, but visiting Barbara and Edi at The Opalcutter in Montville has changed my perspective. Walking into their shop is a visual feast. Turquoise, deep blue, greens, rich purples, vivid orange – flashes of iridescent colour everywhere I look. Opals and mining are a passion for Barbara and Edi; so I sit, enjoying a coffee with German-born Barbara, and listen their story. “I came over from Minden, near Hannover in 1982. I had heard about Coober Pedy. People described it as the ‘Opal Capital of the World’. I had heard about people living underground and wanted to visit.” My mind strays briefly to the Hobbit, before Barbara continues. “I saw something there that blew me away. Standing at the bus stop in Pimba, with a long dirt road ahead of me, I saw this huge orange thing coming out of the ground… It was the moon.” “I had never seen anything like that before. So amazing. The air and night was so still. I just thought: this will change my life.” She was right. Arriving at the youth hostel the next morning, she met Piet Lamont, who was running the TAFE,
and within five weeks they were engaged. Two months later they married. Two days after her arrival, Barbara began mining for opals. In 1984, Piet gave up teaching and went into mining with Barbara full time. “I was the powder monkey,” she explains. “I had to put together the explosives and he put them in the rock walls.” A lot of the work was done by hand in the beginning, and there were hard times but they never gave up. Barbara tells me that most opal in Coober Pedy is found between 3 and 30 metres below the surface in “levels”. These levels are mined by bulldozers and excavators, with deeper work done by tunnelling machines – all of which Barbara operated constantly, and loved to do. Once an area has been identified as having “prospects”, the miners create shafts and descend them to “read the ground”. The next stage is to start mining with a tunnelling machine, with waste dirt tunnelled up pipes by powerful “blowers” and dumped on the surface. “Noodling machines” are used to double-check the waste on the surface for any hidden gems. Despite all of this work, roughly 90 percent of all opal

found has little or no value and is called “potch”. But those moments of finding “the rainbow” shining in a mine are unforgettable, according to Barbara. Very sadly, Piet died of cancer in 2006, and Barbara was left with a successful underground opal shop they had created in 1992. Barbara decided to close the store and “pack up and move away,” to prepare for a new chapter on her own. However, a month later on a walk with her German shepherd, Rex, another German shepherd befriended him. That dog’s name was also Rex. The owner was Edi Heide, Principal of the Coober Pedy Area School, whose parents had come from Austria. “We walked every morning and evening with the dogs, and found we had so much in common,” says Barbara. “I am very lucky to have found love twice.” At this point Edi, with his infectious grin, had joined us. “After meeting Barbara, I realised I needed to choose between teaching and mining….it wasn’t a hard choice.” The allure of opal mining with Barbara had him hooked. “We bought a mining lease in Koroit Opal Fields, near Cunnamulla, and spent five months there in 2011. We had a ball.” Edi agrees, “Barbara drove a tunnelling machine and I was the mechanic. It was great!” “But we were close to broke!” explains Barbara. Barbara has extensive knowledge and talent at jewellery design, and Edi wanted study gemology (“an excuse to play with fancy rocks”), so they decided it was time to open a shop again. They had driven along the coast and hinterland and just loved Montville. “For me, it is almost like being in the Black Forest,” says Barbara. “There are nice people, great little restaurants if you
don’t want to cook and wonderful local artists.” In fact, there are paintings and sculptures throughout their shop by local and Queensland artists who the couple loves to support. I particularly noticed Eddie Maguire’s Spiral Guardian sculptures, which use sandstone, bloodwood, copper, opal and gold leaf. Before I leave, Barbara shows me a small, simple wooden frame, with a single opal nestled behind the glass. “This is one of my first ever opals,” she says. There is a silence as we look at this small, life-changing fiery gem. I’ve learnt a lot today, about opal mining and the people who choose this path. They have no security or financial guarantees, and I am struck by how much this all means to Barbara. For over thirty years she has shaped these opals and, in a way, they have shaped her too. “I love it. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Brock Giblin Lucky ?

HT has heard lots about how the community has rallied behind young Landsborough man, Brock Giblin. Dale Jacobsen was fortunate to meet this brave fellow and hear about his path to recovery.
T
HE ONE THING I did not feel as I sat opposite this 6’ 3 17-year-old young man was pity, but I felt it a stretch to think of him as lucky. Lucky that he suffered burns to 65% of his body when trapped for 15 minutes in his burning racing car? And yet, it was a word he and his mother Shirilee and father Peter used frequently. Brock doesn’t remember much of the four months he spent in the Intensive Care Burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney; nor does he want to remember. His parents rarely left his side—icing his skin 14 hours a day to reduce his temperature—while their teenage daughters, Tyla and Hannah, remained alone in Landsborough, attending school and caring for their Arabian horses.

It’s during such times of family adversity that the local community rallies to support those most in need; all the more so when the person is respected within his own circles. Maleny High proved they are a school that cares when they raised $3275 during a one-day Brock Giblin fundraiser event—the brainchild of music teacher Garry jones and year level Co-ordinator Nat Hyde. Fran Tickle (Interact Club) said they were overwhelmed by the response, but not surprised. “Brock is one of us, a member of the school family. Similarly, the Maleny Bushrangers Rugby union Club got right behind Brock, raising $3640 over a few months for one of their most loved players. Donations came from all parts of the Sunshine Coast Rugby union community. Brock finally came home to his family property in Landsborough in October with the aim of getting back to a normal life as quickly as possible. He had missed much of his Year 11 studies. Peter said, “The school has been very accommodating, manipulating his subjects to focus on the ones he needed to pass, and postponing the rest until 2015.
Brock added, “I’ll really need to work hard, but I’ve no doubt I’ll get there.” I suggested he must be something of a hero at school, given the way he obtained his injuries. He gave me a cheeky grin and said, “More of a larrikin”. There are so many anecdotes about people who have gone out of their way to help Brock and his family. “I was booked in to go for my ‘P’ licence test the week after the accident happened,” said Brock. “Of course, I couldn’t do it, but the mob at Landsborough Driver Training went to great lengths to rearrange schedules so I could sit the test as soon as possible after I came home.” He got his Ps early December (he had no trouble proving he could drive, after all) and now says he has become the local taxi for his mates; and he is able to drive himself to Nambour three days a week for physio, finally giving Peter and Shirilee some time off. “The Physio and Occupational Therapists at Nambour Hospital have been absolutely brilliant,” said Shirilee. “They’ve arranged for early-morning appointments to enable Brock to get to school.” Two stories exemplify Brock’s gentle, caring personality. The ladies at Landsborough Post Office consider Brock their knight in shining armour ever since the day he confronted a man who was aggressively attacking them. Brock told him, “That’s no way to talk to a lady”. Peter told me that Chappy, from Maleny High, also holds Brock in high regard. “He said to me that it’s not every day someone like Brock comes along. One day, a group of boys were bullying some girls and Brock stepped in and stood up for the girls. A brave thing to do.” Then there is the generosity on the part of local businesses, keen to help. While Peter and Shirilee were by Brock’s bedside in Sydney, one of their precious horses became entangled in a fence. Landsborough vet, Tom Duggan, came out to check on the animal, gave medication, and then waived his bill. Tom feels closely connected to the family as his son, Connor, is Brock’s team captain with the Bushrangers. The local chemist has been understanding when Peter called upon an unusually large amount of drugs; Maleny Supa IGA, Maleny Butchery, Maleny Hot Bread Bakery Café all donated to the fund-raising efforts by the Bushrangers. Brock’s old racing team from BMoved Racing painted their bonnets with the words ‘Racing for Brock’, in solidarity. Brock Giblin is lucky. He’s lucky his mother had insisted he wear full safety gear when he races; he’s lucky the team of volunteers at Eastern Creek Raceway had the presence of mind to train hoses on his body for 15 minutes while he was trapped in his burning car; he’s lucky that he wore a balaclava and helmet which saved his face from horrific scarring. He’s lucky to have Peter and Shirilee as parents. Brock thinks he’s lucky because the Landsborough Pub give him free dessert when the family eats there! With this degree of family and community support, 2015 is looking bright for Brock Giblin.

uCKED AWAY on a remote property in the Hinterland are two very humble people throwing their pebble in the pond. Former SAS soldier, Rich, and chiropractor wife, Reb, combine their previous military training, passion for natural food and health, knowledge of ancient wisdoms and the forces of nature to empower people in self-reliance and resilience. They teach people how to bond as families and communities and believe in Henry David Thoreau’s philosophy, “In the wilderness is the preservation of the world. Rich and Reb insist they are “just doing their thing, but the ripple effect of what they do has taught individuals to overcome fears, helped families bond, promoted teamwork for corporations, helped SES emergency teams find lost people and the military train using Rich’s elite tracking skills. They are voluntarily helping a small island community in Atauro, East Timor become more self-reliant by teaching them self-sufficiency skills, waste management and water de-salination.

Bushlore Australia offers so much more than just bush survival. It is about empowering people to deal with challenging situations in life, using the backdrop of the bush as the classroom. Rich says, “The military taught me one thing, that people bond in adversity. They develop that level of trust...through challenging situations.” Therefore the real focus in their life is about working on mindset and applying that to their business. “We spend the first half of the day in a course, talking about the way you think and the way your mindset is set up for success.” Rich says he teaches people to “focus on coping skills” and apply that to day-to day-living. “Next time you have a fight with the wife... or you are sacked from work, you can apply the strategies learnt from being out in nature.” Rich says, “It’s not just about knowing how to light a fire fifteen different ways, and how to find bush foods” but about learning how to manage stress and learning coping strategies to help in all areas of life. Reb grew up in Melbourne and Rich grew up “all over the place.” They met in Perth when Rich was working on a SAS selection course, and Reb was posted there as a Medic. “She was actually given to me as a wife [in training], so we spent five days in this role-playing arrangement where she was my mischievous wife. We got thrown together and found that we got on well.” “It was completely unexpected,” laughs Reb. They weren’t happy in the “city grind” and were searching for more meaning in their lives. “I was working in crisis, emergency management and security for big corporations and government. I felt time was ticking away and I wasn’t doing anything useful.” They bought the farm in the hinterland as a lifestyle choice in 2009 and “the business started off as a part-time thing in 2010.” However, like their marriage, their business has grown unexpectedly. “People come back and do multiple courses
Left: Learning advanced tracking skills during a survival course
and that has driven the growth. They get a taste and want more, so we’re offering more courses to cater for that.” Rich and Reb incorporate a lot of “old wisdom” into their business and life. “I have a holistic approach to survival and that brings in the aspects of nutrition. Weeds have been used as part of diets in traditional countries for many years, but here we spray them with roundup. We have researched all that and packaged Australian bush food wisdom with old world wisdom.” Reb is a chiropractor and has been interested in health and food since she was a child. She believes “food is like medicine” and ferments, preserves, and uses bush food in their diet. Reb says that emergency medicine is equally as important and is passionate about both. Her interests work well with Rich’s love for bush survival, helping people change their lives. They have a beautiful sixteen-month-old daughter, Pia, who also keeps them very busy. “We treasure every single moment we get with our little one. Before you know they’re going to uni. It goes in a heartbeat. You get this small window to be with them, to influence them, to enjoy them, nurture them – that’s what we’re trying to do with families,” says Rich. “We want to make a difference. We gave up lucrative professions to come and do something more useful. We’re not here forever and we only have a short period of time to make a difference.” Rich and Reb are an inspirational couple whose actions speak louder than words and I have certainly felt the effects of that pebble thrown in the pond. You could almost say I am local—I have lived in Maleny for 20 years. During that time I have seen local papers come and go. I have also watched the Hinterland Times evolve to become the highly respected magazine it is today. I got my first assignment in june 2013 after submitting a story on my Antarctic adventure to Michael Berry. I was absolutely thrilled to receive an invitation to become part of the HT team. When not doing my “day job”, I write. Can’t stop me. Last year, I joined three other women authors to form RAW (Range Authors and Writers support). My first two books, union jack and Yenohan’s Legacy (both Australian historical novels), are available at Rosetta Books in Maleny (or from me). I am pretty chuffed that my publisher has just offered me a contract for my third novel...so watch this space.
I am a writer and creative performer and often display a wicked and irreverent sense of humour through alter ego characters. My poetry and stories create a kaleidoscope of words that span thirty-five years. I have been a resident of Maleny area for fifteen years. I was on a life-change journey from corporate Sydney when I stumbled across Maleny and immediately felt a sense of coming home. That has not changed. Community involvement has always played an integral role in my life. I have been part of the team that creates Maleny Music Weekend since its beginnings in 2012. Photography, cooking and being a grandparent are also in the mix. Writing for the Hinterland Times presented itself to me unexpectedly earlier this year through a recommendation from a friend. It gave me the opportunity to express my passion for words, people and community in an awardwinning, independent publication.
Victoria, Damien and the boys at Montville Market

I have lived on the hinterland for nearly two years now, since moving from London with my Australian husband, Damien, and two young children. I trained in drama, music and dance, before working as an actress, writer and weekend drama teacher. One of my proudest achievements is being a founding member and arts editor of The Big Issue newspaper. I love the weather here, the lush hinterland, the beaches, the birds, friendly people, fresh produce everywhere, book club with a bunch of funny friends, and the better quality of life for my family. Damien now has space to paint and sculpt, and the boys have space to run about. I love my work. I'm constantly inspired by the stories and talents people share with me. I do miss my family and friends from Europe, but feel very lucky and grateful to be here.
I have been fortunate to have worked for all three owners of the Hinterland Times, from its creation in Mapleton by Brigitte Shlifelner, previous owners Michael Berry and Faith Baignet, to the current owners Heatley and Michelle. When I’m not working on the layout of the paper, I operate my own design and publishing business, Bare Graphics. And when I’m not doing either of those things, I head out on the mountain bike and ride around the Glasshouse Mountains. What I like about the Hinterland Times is how it has unearthed the amazing talented people in this small community. There’s artists, musicians, social crusaders, dancers and folks with compelling stories from their past.
I moved into wholesaling sculpture, co-ordinating workshops, attending national craft shows and retailing from a home-based gallery. All of these things were made possible by a good partnership with the artist.
Leeza baric I am an author, mentor and speaker and love bringing stories to life. Thanks to my Masters in Creative Writing and Diploma of Education I am able to help people turn their ideas into a book. I write for various publications and am the author of Wobbly Woman – An Illustrated Memoir. Karen Muir My love affair started with the hinterland started in 1992 when I opened a gallery in Montville featuring local sculpture and lived in a hand built mud brick house on acreage at Dulong. I never tire of the beauty of the Glasshouse Mountains or the Hinterland.
My brightest light, my son, came along and as he grew we moved into Maleny to become part of the community and give back. I became an involved parent on kindy and school committees. I worked part time at the high school canteen and managed volunteer positions in the local soccer and netball clubs. I have been fortunate to have worked in the arts, tourism and hospitality industries on the Hinterland before I took up my position at the Hinterland Times. I love my new position here at the Hinterland Times as it enables me to connect with a huge variety of interesting people with their own stories to tell.

My first passion in life is being a mum. As a freelance graphic designer I am lucky Kip, Katie, Elias and Harlan enough to work at home and be with my boys – Elias who is nine and Harlan who is one. I love working as a graphic designer. I can get inside people’s heads and make their ideas come to life in images. I also love painting and writing music. These are two passions that have been put on the back burner, but are stirring inside me again. I also volunteer at the local chamber of commerce as my way of giving back to the community. I absolutely love working with the HT! It’s very fulfilling to see the end product after all the hard work we put into each edition. It feels good to be part of a paper that looks fantastic and is focused I grew up just outside of Maleny on Mount Mellum and on locals! went to Maleny State School and high school before I started with HT with Faith and Michael in 2012, so I’ve Sunshine Coast uni. I ventured away from the mountains for watched the paper develop and grow. I am very proud to a few years but found myself drawn back. I built a house in be part of this great new team and am looking forward to the area but have since sold it and moved to Kilcoy and to a what 2015 brings! bigger house to fit our growing family.

Felicity Grigor My family had strong connection to the Hinterland, so it seemed to click when I moved to Maleny. I completed my Bachelor of Public Relations at the university of the Sunshine Coast in before 2013 establishing my own PR consultancy company, called “Publicity by Felicity”. She has established her roots with local fashion boutique “Birdy” and is now working alongside Hinterland local businesses including Colin james, Maleny Physiotherapy, Landsborough IGA and The Lions Mountain View Challenge with her my business. I work with the HT team managing the Facebook page and attending local social events.

Since Heatley and Michelle took ownership of the Hinterland Times I was given the opportunity to become one of their writing team members, a role that has been as challenging as it has been rewarding.
As soon as I finished my PhD I did a journalism course to free myself from academic writing. Then I started writing, editing and teaching. I currently teach creative writing part time at the Sunshine Coast Community College.
I am the IT technician for the Hinterland Times and take care of our website. It is my responsibility to put articles on the website and try to keep it interesting and relevant to our readers.
After completing a degree in visual art, I have gone onto having a variety of positions from production nursery, receptionist and bookkeeper to sales/advertising and administration for two art galleries.
My other obsession is food – growing it and cooking it. I believe we should all try to keep it local and fresh. My passion led me and my family to create a business, Shared Table Wholefoods.
I am always learning new technologies which I evaluate for our possible use.
I am currently accommodation office manager and gallery manager at Secrets on the Lake in Montville. I've always taken on the role of editorial writer for the businesses I've worked for, but now my role at HT provides me with opportunity to write about the characters and events unique to the Hinterland.
We sell sausages for people who choose not to eat meat. The fabulous people at Maleny SupaIGA and Maple Street Co-Op support us locals by stocking them.
HT has given us all a fresh approach to our local news and events with a focus on the personalities behind each story, which I believe enriches the community feel here on the range. I am proud to have been given the opportunity to share these stories and be a part of the HT family.
I met the very neighbourly Heatley and Michelle through the community gardens where I volunteered, and am so glad I did! The Hinterland Times is an awesome paper to work on – it is packed with local life, passion and colour. Keep it up in 2015!
I have been in the information technology industry for over 35 years now with my most senior role being software systems architect in the financial sector. I am married to the most beautiful, smart lady and have two boys aged 16 and 13. My hobby is remote control planes (actually anything remote control, really) and I am current president of Gympie Model Fliers.
Plus we couldn’t get it to you without our two wonderful delivery guys!

Franklin Mint precision 1:8 scale model 1886 Benz – where the story began
It takes a degree of self-belief and skill to hold a model of an 1886 Benz three-wheeler motorcar in your hands and decide to make a full-scale replica. When Rex Redding’s old mate, Jack Warren, said, ‘There you are, make one of these’, Rex took up the challenge.

“W
HILE MERCEDES BENz is a continuation of the company that built the first Benz vehicles, they have been reluctant to help me with information or advice," said Rex. "I had to do thing whole thing myself, from scratch." Rex has been obsessed by the motor vehicle since, as a boy, he escaped to the wrecking yard out the back of his Dalby home after school and ‘pulled things to pieces’. He left school at 14 to take up an apprenticeship with the local motor mechanic. "Times were tough. We had to work for everything, but we all turned out okay. I eventually operated a very successful radiator business, which I finally sold when I retired 17 years ago." Even though Rex left school at a young age and is largely self-taught, his commitment to education has resulted in his two sons becoming scientists. Rex didn’t intend moving to Maleny when he and Wendy purchased their house in the township. "It was just for investment," said Rex. "I was worried there might be too many snakes. But one day, I had a huge 8ft brown in my Dalby workshop, so I said to Wendy, ‘do you still want to move to Maleny?’ We agreed to give it four years. We’re still here." While Rex had a fine collection of vintage cars in Dalby (including five Model Ts, a 1918 and 1928 Buick), he now focuses on creating his own replicas of veteran cars. He had begun work on the 1886 Benz when a friend from New zealand sent him a set of working drawings. He had a couple of things wrong, so he began a second, using the plans. He also made a replica 1889 Daimler—a fourwheeler with a V-twin engine known as a “steel-wheel car”— then an 1894 Benz Velo, also a four-wheeler. His latest project is an 1896 Ford Quadricycle—the first model car made by Henry Ford. Ford made just two, one of which he sold, then repurchased. It is housed in the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan, uSA. And then there’s Rex’s current reproduction, an 1885 Daimler motorbike. "They only ever made one, and that was used to test an engine destined for a motor car. It has trainer wheels on the back, similar to kid’s bikes today." This man really likes a challenge! I asked him why he chose to reproduce the Ford. "I thought it would be easy," he laughed. "It’s a different style to the older ones; smaller, and easier to transport on a normal car trailer. The engine is entirely different, but it’s still an antiquated vehicle." Such creations take a long time to complete. It took Rex three days to turn the 18-inch flywheel on his metal lathe. He fabricates just about everything in his large shed in the backyard, including camrods, crankshafts, cylinder blocks and cylinder heads. While he remains as faithful as practical to the original, he doesn’t mind making changes where necessary. "The original carburetor was downright dangerous,” said Rex. “It consisted of a tap that dripped fuel into the inlet manifold, eventually finding its way into the engine. I designed one that suited better, and is safer." Rex also discovered that Ford had used existing bicycle wheels. He investigated, and found that modern-day mountain-bike wheels were just about right. "It saved me many hours," he confessed. His huge shed out the back, divided into metal workshop and wood workshop, contains pretty much everything he needs, from lathes and milling machines to a furnace for destressing welds in engines. Although impressive, this is just a hobby-sized outfit compared with the five huge sheds he had back in Dalby. Of course, living over the road from the Maleny Golf Club, and being friends with most of the members, his skills aren’t confined to his own projects. Friend, and president of the

Maleny Golf Club, Dr Max Whitten, holds Rex in high regard. "There are lots of interesting characters around Maleny, but Rex does stand out." Rex has taken on the demanding task of keeping all the machinery and mowers of the Golf Club in running order. until recently, when he damaged his knee crawling out from beneath a lawn mower, Rex spent more time on their upkeep than he did on his own projects. I asked Wendy what it was like living with Rex. "Well, I’m very happy he has an absorbing hobby. I always know where he is—in the shed. My only worry is, what is he going to do when he’s finished with the motor cars?" Rex is also worried about the future of his creations. After moving to Maleny, he donated 10 ton of generators and dynamos to the Queensland Energy Museum in Brisbane. “It represented a real history of power generation dating from 1830 to 1926,” said Rex. unfortunately, the government closed this down after three years. The collection is now housed in a museum in Toowoomba. Perhaps his current collection, which fully occupied the first fourteen years of his retirement, will find a similar home. I couldn’t resist asking how he felt about Ford leaving Australia, after all these years. "It is a terrible thing, but the unions and government should take the blame. They shouldn’t have allowed costs to get out of hand. People always want more, but where has it got us? We’re no better off than we were in the 50s and 60s."

Hooked
on Vintage “M
ALENY IS VERY uNIQuE. The whole town seems to befriend everyone,” said judi Pearce. “I have always loved the friendly atmosphere, so it was the only place we wanted to come to.” judi set up her original shop in 2010 in Mooloolah. She wanted a name that was bold, edgy and catchy, but that also went with ‘vintage’. So after scouring the dictionary for possible words, she came up with two ‘V’s: “vicious” and “vintage”. Vicious Vintage is definitely not easily forgotten! This is an industry judi knows inside out. When she was just 15 she started working for a fashion house, where she learned how to design and manufacture exclusive garments. She went on to gain a degree in fashion design before working for a few fashion houses. When she wasn’t creating, she was modelling and vice versa. judi did some travelling and learned about the history of vintage fashion overseas. “That is when I got hooked,” she said. “I loved all the history. We have become a throwaway society, I feel. And fashion has become cheap so the quality isn’t there anymore.”
Judi Pearce invites you to visit Vicious Vintage
“To me, 50s fashion is probably my favourite, because it is so feminine. But then again, the 70s stuff takes me back to my surfing days. The main thing is that I try to stock something for everyone and hope I have achieved that.” It is clear that being in this industry requires dedication, a sharp eye and maybe even a lifetime of experience, which judi clearly has. “Finding good quality stock is hard,” she said. "I try to keep it affordable but sometimes it’s too expensive to upsell. Believe me, I am always looking, even when I’m on holidays!” she laughed. “It’s very addictive.” Open Monday to Saturday, you'll find Vicious Vintage at the Riverside Centre, Maleny.

How Does Your Garden
Grow?
by Victoria McGuin
There has been a change of hands at a much-loved Maleny venue recently. Le Jardin has been sold, and is reborn as… The Garden. A different language maybe, but the same ideals. Victoria McGuin went for a garden stroll (and a cup of tea) to find out more.
A
RRIVING AT THE GARDEN, I feel I am stepping into a serene, secret world, complete with a flowering courtyard and welcoming café. The new owners of this garden centre, Kelly and jason Pini, are keen to nurture the charm and beauty of this popular horticultural haven, but add their own style and broaden the appeal of the venue as a whole. “There are no drastic changes planned,” says Kelly. “But I’m not French,” she laughs. It is clear that, although the feeling of Provence still touches the décor, there are different designs and individual pieces appearing throughout the shop and garden nursery. Locals have been enjoying the subtle shift, telling Kelly they love the changes she’s made so far. The idea is to make The Garden a hub of creative activity, with painting workshops, sewing, arts and crafts events, an art gallery and perhaps a sculpture competition. It will also be more child-friendly (high chairs have already appeared in the café) with a decent playground planned alongside the giant chess set in the garden. The regular yoga classes are still happening, as are the musical afternoons with Kevin Borich and Slow Train. Kelly is keen for the music and performance aspect to hopefully expand over time, both day and night. Private functions are still welcome too, complete with fairy lights and candles to create a truly enchanting atmosphere. So, I know about the venue, but just who are the couple behind The Garden? Kelly is an Australian who has lived in Papua New Guinea for the past ten years with her husband, jason, who was born there. Kelly and Jason Pini at The Garden
“We met in Port Douglas and started off as friends,” she explains. Years later, this clearly changed, as the couple now have four children, aged two, four, six and eight, to keep them on their toes, and skis and surfboards and flippers! Kelly and jason have seriously active children, who know how to travel. “We’ve been to Kenya, China, Cambodia, Thailand. We often go for five to six weeks, complete with backpacks, and I’m pretty organised! Right down to the amount of nappies and squeezy foods.” The elder children, Lukah, Tully and Olive, have grown up learning how to ski (“in Canada every two years”), wake board, water ski and even dive; with Hunter now joining in on some of the activities. “The kids have grown up around boats. We have a speed boat, jason’s parent have a weekender and a dive boat; the kids go diving with professionals,” Kelly tells me. She shows me photographs of the children free-diving in crystal clear waters and they certainly seem at ease. I begin to wonder why she and jason have decided to bring the family over to Australia. “Where we are in Papua New Guinea, it isn’t very safe. You have to live in compounds, with razor wire around your home,” she says sadly. “And now the kids are getting older, the place also isn’t really big enough for them. Here they can do ballet, football, more sports, and go to a local school.”
I ask if the children are excited about the fresh start. “It will be a culture shock, as they’ve never lived in Australia. There are different foods, different animals, it’s a different environment,” Kelly says, “But they went to an international school in Papua New Guinea and got used to friends coming and going all the time, so I think they’ll be okay.” The hardest adjustment, it seems, may be saying goodbye to the craziness of their house. Kelly was originally a zookeeper by trade and, due to this, she would often rescue and rehabilitate animals in Papua New Guinea. “We would have baby crocs in the bath tub, a joey on the towel rail, an echidna under the couch, sugar gliders, turtles, tree kangaroos…it was a mad house. The kids grew up hand-raising deer and even a sheep! All their friends would say, ‘You live in a zoo.’” It’s a far cry from the calm of The Garden. I ask Kelly what made them choose this spot. “We’ve owned a house here for five years and we’ve been coming once a year, every year. We love it. We were looking for a business to buy and this came up at just the right time.” jason will still be working for his parents’ stationery business; so really Kelly is at the helm here and is very excited about “her fifth baby.” If she can manage emigrating, travelling the world with four young children and rearing a homemade zoo, I think The Garden may be coming up roses.

Aussie films feature on Australia Day weekend T
HE AuSTRALIAN FILM Festival is presenting three short films from some of our new and upcoming directors and producers. They each feature some fantastic new talent. The first, Ignition contains themes of theft, nudity, drugs and a kombi called Betsy. jake is woken in the middle of the night when his 1970 kombi is being hotwired and stolen. With no time to dress, jake and his roommate, Ben, go on a wild goose chase around Brisbane. jake is in his underwear and socks and Ben in colourful pyjamas. The night has only just begun… Quite a delightful film. Ignition will screen on the Friday evening with Felony as the feature film. The director of Ignition, Dylan Harris, will be joining the Maleny Film Society to discuss the making of this short film and his pathway to success. The second short film to be screened will be F-word, produced by Anasiou Canaris and directed by Kieran Murray. This will be screened with Infinite Man on Saturday afternoon. Anasiou and Kieran are both overseas after attending the premiere in Cannes. The F-Word is a romantic comedy about a man named Ned and his close friend Penelope, who he deeply admires. She considers him as nothing more than a friend and the story follows his determination to break through this friend zone. Jackrabbit is the final short film to be screened and the cinematography is beautiful in this film. This film was also premiered in Cannes in 2014. Helen Susa (pictured right), the producer said, “The

reason I chose to produce Jackrabbit was the standout script. It was a challenging script to produce but the emotion really struck a chord. I believed it had the potential to showcase the beautiful landscape of rural Queensland, whilst dealing with the real life issue of domestic violence.” Helen and the director, Stacie Howarth, now live in London and LA. They will be sending through some words on the day. Charlie’s Country will be screened after Jackrabbit. Maleny Film Society would like to thank our sponsors Pia Buick Real Estate, Rosetta books, Gary Meyer Studio, Maleny Additions and the Maleny Credit union. The Australian Film Festival screens january 23 and 24, 2015. For more information, ph: 5429 6951, or visit www.malenyfilmsociety.info

Reflections on a “Lost” year in France
E
LEvEN MONTHS IS a long time on a single home exchange in a foreign land.
As Val and I meet Maleny friends in the street or pop up at various functions the question always asked of us is: "Would you do it again?" We take this to mean "Knowing now what it is really like, with all the hassles encountered, would you still have gone for such a long time?" Emphatically, YES!! The experience was simply too wonderful. To be immersed in a different (but related) culture, to be able to explore in depth and at leisure one great area of France, to have that sense of living there, not just passing through, is wonderful. This question is often followed by: "We would love to do that!" Well folks, as Nike says,..."just do it" for goodness sake. Get out there and start searching the many various exchange websites (our favourite is homeforexchange.com, on which I have just turned up a member from near Toulouse seeking a six months exchange in Brisbane). Of course there will be hassles and you will need a long term visa (more hassles and fees) to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days (but you do end up with beautiful visa documents ornamenting your passport). We have simply slotted back into our previous life just like putting on an old boot. We have learnt lessons though,
mainly about keeping our life here simple, for us to enjoy leisure without undue commitments. However, there is one strange aspect. When we think about something happening this last year, we have in mind "our last year in Maleny", that being 2013. It's as if our experience of 2014 is packed away in a box labelled "Our Life in La Charente". It's a segment out of our lives; the box is over there on the sideboard, we look at it with genuine happiness and smile and then get on with living in beautiful Maleny. Talking about living in beautiful Maleny, we have recognized a sharp difference in the cost of living. It is noticeably more expensive to live here than to live in our part of rural France. And yes, we do miss that excellent cheap lunch in some village cafe finished off with a short black and cognac. Over the years, Val and I had often talked about living in France for an extended time. One evening over drinkies on our veranda two years ago we looked at each other and said "Right, let's do it" and we did!

rachel and Howie dared to dream W
HEN A TWO-WEEK trip to Tassie fell through, Rachel Fentiman and Howie Tampling decided to dream bigger. They poured over a map of the world, marking all their ‘must see’ places. “We needed to plan this trip in minute detail…” said Rachel. “From airport transfers to finding a horse-drawn Gypsy caravan in Ireland”. “It’s hard to pick a favourite part of the trip,” said Howie. Then he grinned, and admitted he had fallen for Coco. Coco belonged to the uniquely Irish family company, Clissman’s Heavy Horse Caravans. For four days she pulled their caravan through the Wicklow region of Ireland, gently plodding along, not in a hurry to get anywhere. “We learnt how to attach her yoke and groom her, then were given a hand-drawn map,” said Rachel. “At the first turn, I noticed Coco was reluctant to obey my commands. We had made a mistake. She knew the way! After that, we tossed the map and let her have her head.” Two boat trips, each entirely different from the other, were standout experiences. With two friends, including Maleny’s Simon Denver, they hired Blue Rock Thrush, a 66ft-long narrow boat not much wider than a double bed. They put-put-putted along the Avon Canal from London to Bath, negotiating locks and seeing some of the best countryside England has on offer. “If you are in a hurry, you’re on the wrong holiday,” laughed Howie. “The most challenging part was negotiating a loch outside of Bath where the water had to be raised 25 feet before we could continue.” This was also the week they celebrated Howie’s birthday. Their two-week cruise along the Rhine and Danube on board Amabella was as luxurious as the narrow boat was basic. “It was five-star all the way,” said Rachel. “We passed fairy-tale town after fairy-tale town. It was truly stunning, particularly Vienna. A very special place.” They sailed from Amsterdam to

Budapest, passing through Germany, Austria and Hungary. During their three months, they took in England and Ireland, boarded the Eurostar to Paris (such a change of pace after the Avon Canal), visited European towns such as Amsterdam, Budapest, Prague and toured Normandy and Breton, in northern France, by coach. “If we have one word of advice,” said Howie, “it is to do it now. While you are young. While you are agile enough to climb those stairs, those hills. Don’t put it off until you retire!” Rachel and Howie's trip of a lifetime was planned by Nicola Rowlingson at Maleny Cruise and Travel.

Mighty red cedars honoured by Wootha Prize
Judges George Gavaric, Carol Russell and Ross Annals with 2014 Wootha Prize winners, Richard Vaughan, Frank Van Brunschot and Gary Fields.
T
HE MALENY WOOD Expo’s Wootha Prize is held in celebration of the timber heritage of the Blackall Range. With over $4,000 in prizes making it richest woodworking Queensland’s competition, the 2015 Wootha Prize – themed Planting the Seed – will form the feature exhibition at the Maleny Wood Expo to be held on May 2 and 3. The name “Wootha Prize” was chosen because ‘Wootha’ was the local indigenous name for the mighty red cedars that brought the first timber cutters to the Blackall Range: “The Blackall Range was first introduced to the notice of interested pioneers through the prevalence of the “blacks” or aboriginals who camped along the coast at Buderim and Mooloolaba and who paid their seasonal visits to the Range when the Bunya Pine Trees, which clothed the area, were bearing their great crop of nuts, which are so delightful when roasted, and availed of them for food. By this agency, the early white settlers followed the “blacks” who told them of the “big fellow Wootha” (Cedar trees) which also abounded in the area and who thus became infused with the spirit of adventure. The Red Cedar grew so abundantly and huge in their dimensions, that timber getters, who are invariably the first
to interest themselves in such resources, were the first to be attracted, so became our pioneers.” From Reminiscences of Maleny by Dave Hankinson (1978) The application deadline for this, the 8th annual Wootha Prize, is February 13 and successful applicants will be notified by early March. Wootha Applications Forms and Guidelines are available at http://www.malenywoodexpo.com/wootha-prize/

Copyright
Copyright protects the original expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. It is free and automatically safeguards your original works of art and literature, music, films, sound recording, broadcasts and computer programs from copying and certain other uses. Note that copyright is not registered in Australia. Material is protected from the time it is first written down, painted or drawn, filmed or taped. Copyright material will also enjoy protection under the laws of other countries who are signatories to the international treaties, of which Australia is a member. Copyright protection is provided under the Copyright Act 1968 and gives exclusive rights to license others in regard to copying the work, performing it in public, broadcasting it, publishing it and making an adaptation of the work. Rights vary according to the nature of the work. Rights for artistic works, for instance, are different to those for literary and musical works. Although making copies of copyright material can infringe exclusive rights, a certain amount of copying is permissible under the fair dealing provisions of the legislation. Copyright doesn't protect you against independent creation of a similar work. Legal actions against infringement are complicated by the fact that a number of different copyrights may exist in some works - particularly films, broadcasts and multimedia products. Although a copyright notice with the owner's name and date is not necessary in Australia, it can help prove your ownership of the copyright, and is necessary to establish copyright in a few overseas countries. It can also act as a deterrent to potential infringers. Copyright is lost if the owner applies a three-dimensional artistic work industrially. In such a case, it is necessary to register the design if protection is required. The duration of copyright varies according to the nature of the work and whether or not it has been published. Depending on the material, copyright for literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works generally lasts 70 years from the year of the author's death or from the year of first publication after the author's death. Copyright for films and sound recordings lasts 70 years from their publication and for broadcasts, 70 years from the year in which they were made.

Blowing in the Wind...
W
HEN IT COMES TO SEED dispersal you may invariably think of those gaudy members of the plant kingdom who use birds to spread their seed by hiding them in a fruit. It could be said that these plants were the first beings to master the art of advertising. That is to say - the art of making you believe, that you just have to have their fruit, no matter how low the food value, because it’s such a lovely colour! Sure some fruit are relatively nutritious and the lucky bird that’s eaten them can roost on a warm sunny branch and relax while the digestive processes take place. However, most fruit are designed to pass straight through digestive systems as quickly as possible leaving birds feeling hungry and having to eat even more fruit – how devious! Before you go thinking how superior you are and how dumb birds are for getting themselves trapped in a vicious circle like that, may I remind you that at least the birds only get sucked in by the advertisers when it comes to food… Then there are those free spirits of the botanical kingdom who use wind power! Ferns and mosses were amongst the earliest of plants and produce spores that are wholly spread by wind. Tree fern spore is particularly good at getting about. Now I don’t want you to panic but you’re probably inhaling
some at the moment, its everywhere! Fern spore will germinate on any moist, shady and bare patch of soil which is great for all you revegetators out there because ferns will turn up in your patch of developing forest all by themselves when the conditions become right. Besides the ferns many trees have evolved to spread their seed in the wind. Some familiar examples are the ancient conifers (excluding the Bunya of course) whose flat seeds are blown about in the summer storms and also the fine seed of eucalypts that are released to float on the breeze after a bush fire. The great limitation of wind dispersal is of course the wind itself. After all what happens if a few weeks of calm weather sets in when you’ve got a big crop of fruit on! Also unless your seed is particularly small then you’re going to be lucky if your seed goes any more than a kilometre. This poses a big problem for the spread and maybe survival of some of the wind dispersed species in the fragmented forests of Southeast Queensland. When it comes to tree planting we should make sure these species are on our planting lists particularly if no parent trees of the same species appear close by. Cheers Spencer

P
HOTOGRAPHS TAKEN AROUND THE Blackall Range in the 1950’s show a rather different landscape from the one we see today. The same of course applied to the 1930’s, at the time of early settlement, and so on back in time. Landscapes will always change as a result of differing patterns of land use, changing climate, plant introductions (usually weeds) and a whole range of other factors. While the rain at the end of November was very welcome for those who received it, and the vegetation will certainly benefit, now is a good time to assess which species actually survived and possibly thrived during the long, hot dry spell. They could be an indicator for the species we should be planting in the future. Choices will depend on, and vary, with soil type. Those species with a naturally wide distribution such as the Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius) and Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) appear to be well adapted to a variable climate with less rainfall overall and more days with above average temperatures, and there are others. Bat Wing Coral Tree (Erythrina vespertilio), also native to northern Australia, did particularly
well on the heavy soils of the eastern side of the Blackall Range. Some of the softer foliaged species that are more synonymous with rainforest struggled in the heat, and shade was critically important for others. It is possible that a southward movement of species may be seen, as is already occurring with a number of insects, particularly butterflies. They are apparently moving to escape the heat, whereas plants may move to take advantage of opportunities to colonise places no longer suited to some of the species there now. There was a heavy flowering of a local specimen of Leichhardt Bean (Cassia brewsteri), a tree of the dry rainforest and more commonly found north of Gympie. Will it spread its seed? Interesting times lie ahead with observation and record keeping the keys to successful revegetation projects.

with Loors Landscaping FRANZ LOORS ... landscaping the Range for the past 24 years A native to Brazil, Argentina and Paraquay, passion fruit is grown in many parts of the world. Easily grown on a trellis, fence or even a dead tree the creeper grows vigorously and with the right care produce bountiful crops. Panama Gold, Panama Rd and Nelly Kelly are the most popular varieties. The blue Passion Flower, Passiflora Caerulia is usually used as a rootstock to graft such varieties as Nelly Kelly. Spring is a good time to plant. Choose a sunny and frost free position with good loamy soil. Passion fruit are heavy feeders and need adequate water and fertilizer. Well rotted cattle manure and citrus
fertilizer are good choices to produce large yields. Vines should be pruned to control their growth and also encourage flowering. Your first crop can be expected approx 18 months after planting. If your vine is not producing fruit it could be due to one or more of the following reasons; 1) lack of adequate water 2) heavy rain during flowering which affects the viability of pollen 3) Excessive nitrogen rich fertilizer which will tend to produce extra leaf growth at the expense of flowering. 4) Lack of sunshine, at least 5-6 hours per day is required. s

Hugh Cochrane Lookout I LOVE THE peaceful drive along Obi Obi Road through open dairy country. It’s not the main route to anywhere, so the number of travellers who would take in the sweeping views of the Obi Obi Valley is limited. To me, this makes it more special, more personal. A couple of years ago a picnic table appeared together with a sign, “Hugh Cochrane Look Out”. Someone else thought it a special place too. Curious as to the identity of Hugh Cochrane, I contacted
the Kenilworth Historical Museum and spoke to Lenore Meldrum, President of the Kenilworth and District Historical Association. Needless to say, she knew, having been in contact with Lorna Freeman—Hugh and Olive Cochrane’s daughter. As with many place names, this lookout was named in honour of a local: Kenilworth resident Hugh Cochrane, a returned WWII soldier of 2/26 Battalion. Hugh quietly and tirelessly worked for his community, from the school committee to the lawn bowls club. From the age of 13, when he left his family home in Brisbane, Hugh was a “local”, working first with the railways; then the Main Roads Department at Wondai. He married Olive in 1927 and the couple lived on their dairy farm in Kenilworth, with their two children, Lorna and Cliff. In later years, Hugh spent much of his time on the bowling green, playing the game he loved. It is perhaps fitting that he passed away while playing bowls, in 1973. Olive lived on their property until her passing in 1991. The family sold the property, and later made a donation for the formation of the lookout that honours Hugh, overlooking the valley he loved. In 2012, Ross Norman from the (then) Department of Environment and Resource Management lodged a suggestion to name “Hugh Cochrane Lookout” at 1586 Obi Obi Road. It was formally gazetted on 5 October 2012.

Happy New year? j
uST FOR A FLEETING moment, it appeared that the spirit of peace and goodwill had peeped through the gloomy façade of the Abbott government. The Christmas Eve headline on page five of The Australian read: “Soft focus order of the day as PM presents new line up.” True, it was only a puff piece about the swearing in of the reshuffled ministry. But perhaps there was a glimpse, just a glimpse of hope. But alas, no: it turned out to be the same old Ebenezer Scrooge, unashamed and unrepentant. The adjacent headline read: “Anger at festive welfare axe falls”. This was a rather more substantial yarn about hundreds of millions of dollars being stripped from community groups as a result of budget cuts cynically scheduled for the silly season, where it was presumably hoped they would not be noticed. The toughest measures were aimed at the growing army of the homeless: no room at the inn for those leaners. The newly minted Minister for Social Security, Scott Morrison defended the slashing saying the funding (or lack of it) “supports the areas of greatest need” – perhaps tax avoidance for the multinationals was what he had in mind. Morrison had already sent out his yuletide message: he would be focussed on outcomes. His spin for the mantra: the end justifies the means. And he was determined to ensure that the welfare system was sustainable, meaning he would chop the bejesus out of it. His only positive note was that he regarded the national disability insurance scheme as his holy grail – at the least he had the tact to use the imagery of Easter rather than Christmas. This was, of course, the equally fervent goal of julia Gillard that was immediately derided by Abbott and his minions as an unaffordable fantasy, no more than a thought bubble. Morrison apparently regards it as a sustainable reality, but only if existing programmes can be cut from the existing social welfare budget to accommodate it. Rebranding: ten out of ten. Net benefit: nil. A bit like the entire overhyped reshuffle really. There can be no doubt that the team of 2015 has the potential to be more attractive than its predecessor, at least at the margins. David johnston is gone but then, until he imploded, few people realised that he was there in the first place. At least Sussan Ley will be noticed, although her challenge will be to forge an identity as someone more than just the other woman in cabinet. And josh Frydenberg can, and must be, a convincing voice in treasury matters: the gaffe-prone joe Hockey is no longer credible and Mathias Cormann – while persistent and coherent – remains forbidding. But it isn’t just the medium, it is the message, and Tony Abbott will still have to give the spruikers something to convince the public that he has more than rhetoric to say to
them. It is not enough to endlessly reiterate the now outdated cliché that the budget is in trouble and it was all Labor’s fault. The remedy – a fresh remedy – has to include a fix which is dramatic, equitable and above all plausible. Tinkering with the senate crossbenchers is not the answer: the so-called reforms to the universities are highly dubious, and the GP co-payment, (whatever it is called) is not only electoral poison; it is frankly silly. And fudging the GST allocations, while appeasing some of the cantankerous states, will only infuriate the others, and it will have little to do with punters’ already itching hip pocket nerves in any case. On the expenditure side, all the big ticket items are on the welfare sector and they will hurt the middle income masses on which survival in the polls depends. They can be sold, but only if there is a balance: the wealthy must suffer too. Hitting the aforesaid multinationals is a start, as is the obvious solution to removing some of the other perks of the greedy and affluent, notably superannuation concessions. But it will take more than that – given the traumas of the last eight months. The voters will want to hear the fat cats howl. Hence the next budget will be crucial. If it is seen as a reprise of 2014 – second verse, same as the first, a little bit louder and a little bit worse – then the government, and more particularly Tony Abbott, who is now teetering perilously close to the point of no return, will be in real, perhaps even terminal, trouble. Logic dictates it is time for decisiveness and even daring; but we are unlikely to get either from Tony Abbott. Despite all the bravado and bluster, history reveals that our Prime Minister is actually a cautious soul, disinclined to shirtfront the rich and powerful – and if there is to be in any doubt, a quick glance at the polls will confirm that he does not need any more political enemies. Moreover, as he has already tacitly admitted, his government is caught in an irreconcilable contradiction. On the one hand he needs to pursue the message of an economy left in a parlous state, requiring firmness and austerity, but on the other he has to encourage a return to consumer confidence because if we don’t keep spending we may slide into a recession. Don sackcloth and ashes, and then splurge like buggery. The public will remain both sceptical and confused, rather like the backbench and, one suspects, not a few of the ministers. What seems inevitable is that 2015 is unlikely to be any better than 2014: basically grim. The only real question is: who ends up bearing the cost? It may be Abbott himself, and it may be the government as a whole. But one way or another we are all going to cop at least a bit of collateral damage. So Happy New Year – or should that really be: should auld acquaintance be forgot...

OCALLY GROWN and in season food is a more environmentally friendly and nutritious choice than food transported long distances. This is because transporting food uses up valuable energy and fossil fuels and releases lots of damaging greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. By taking care to choose foods that are grown in south-east Queensland and in season, you are also likely to be choosing foods that are fresher, tastier and probably cheaper! Some foods are grown year round in south-east Queensland. These include: tomato, capsicum, garlic, onion, sweet potato, cucumber, lettuce, celery, pineapple, red apples and bananas. Some great fruit and vegetables that are in season and readily available in january include: mango, asparagus, avocado, watermelon, nectarines, passionfruit and eggplant. PRRIM meaning ‘spring’ or ‘native well’ is the name adopted by a trio of exceptional Australian musicians: Satsuki Odamura (koto), Tunji Beier (percussion) and Adrian Sherriff (bass trombone, shakuhachi, suling). The trio will come together for a Sunday afternoon of unique music in Witta this month. While the name of the group comes from the language of the indigenous Wembawemba people of Western Victoria, the music casts a wide net, encompassing a range of traditions from across the world, including: South Indian, japanese and Indonesian - with a touch of jazz. True to its name, the ensemble is fresh, alive and spontaneous, focusing on improvisation and original compositions, which explores a broad emotional palette. A particular fascination of the group is the exploration of the South Indian rhythmic tradition as a creative springboard for their musical adventures. Sharing a common passion for heartfelt communication through sound, together they display exceptional dynamic rapport and synergy. The trio will be hosted by well-known local musician jacinta Foale, in the intimate garden setting at her home in Witta. jacinta and Tunji will combine forces in a piano and percussion interlude prior to the main performance. japanese food delights by Midoo will be available. HERE IS NOTHING like the Tango, known as a dance of passion and seduction, to bring people together. Local instructors, Cameron and Sharon, demonstrated the enjoyment and benefits of the dance at an evening of fun for residents and visitors at Maleny Grove recently. The Tango was born at the turn of the century in Buenos Aires, when newly arrived immigrants sought to fill the need for companionship and community.
The dance is today regarded as the ultimate connection in an often disconnected world. More than a dance, it is fun and easy to learn, with health benefits of muscle strengthening as well as improvement in posture, balance and coordination. It does not always take two to tango, and age and singles is not a restriction to start lessons at Maleny Grove Clubhouse.

Samantha Grigor takes three Golds
L
OCAL ATHLETE Miss Samantha Grigor graduated from Maleny State High School with numerous sporting awards, however it is her recent achievements at State Titles that will enable her to follow her sporting dream. Miss Grigor won three gold medals at the Queensland Athletic State Titles held at QE2 in Brisbane late October, receiving Gold in the 400m, 800m and 1500m events. Since returning from the Athletic Titles, Miss Grigor has now qualified for the
Australian junior Athletic Titles in early March in Sydney. Miss Grigor will travel to the Australian junior Athletic Titles in hope of reaching her goal of one day competing at the Para Olympics. Sporting selectors will be present at the junior Titles to hand pick athletes who they see fit to potentially train for the Australian Squad. We wish Miss Grigor the best of luck with her training and competition at the junior Titles in March.

January – e Life-Changing Month by Deb Blakley Lead Nutritionist and Dietitian, Kids Dig Food
Deb Blakely worked as a Sunshine Coast Community Nutritionist for Queensland Health in Nambour, and now helps families in her private practice. She gives us some great tips for parents and grandparents - and it is not about resolutions, back to school recipes or what to put in your child's lunchbox.
j
ANuARY SIGNALS a new year, and also that our kids are growing up... maybe too fast! Our kids are starting day care or kindy. They're moving up a year level at school. And most of us, if we are honest, wish we could turn back the clock. But january is also about new beginnings and growth and most of all, change. Food and eating plays a big part in everything. Here are my five top january priorities for families with a foodie twist to help you thrive amidst the change. What's at the top of your list?
Settling into new routines Starting school, day care, kindy, being cared for at Grandmas. Even the new routine of moving from breast or bottle to solid foods can be an exciting but unsettling experience for you and baby. Try to preserve some of the familiar in the midst of change. Food and mealtimes provide a chance for you to create or maintain an enjoyable and familiar routine for your kids. Start the day with a hearty breakfast, preferably eaten together, talk to your child about what is going into their

lunchbox and find an after school/care routine that suits them and your lifestyle.
Letting go Leaving your child in care can be heart-breaking, even if they're not screaming the place down in the throes of separation anxiety. As soon as my daughter was old enough to understand, I created a little ritual to help both of us. I began to put a little love note in her lunchbox each day at childcare to let her know I was thinking about her. She looked forward to them and would sternly remind me: "Don't forget my note, Mum!". Heaven help me if I forgot. Her teachers would read her the note and stick them in her portfolio as keepsakes. They are treasured still. What ritual can you create to help you both with the letting go?
Independence Choose lunch boxes, water bottles and food containers that promote your child's independence. It took me till the end of first term of Prep before I realised my daughter couldn't open the small snack containers I gave her. She'd been using her teeth to open them! As children enter Kindergarten or school, get them to show you how they open their lunch box, food containers and drink bottles. If they're having difficulty, an alternative might need to be found.
New experiences, new responsibility You want your kids to eat what 's in their lunchbox, right? So you tend to send what you know they are likely to eat. Expand food variety by trying out some new things on the weekend and adding them to the lunchbox periodically. If you're unsure whether the new food will be a hit, make sure there's plenty of familiar and liked foods in there also.
Miss 6 is entering Year 2 and I've decided that I've been doing way too much for her in the "getting ready for school" routine. Starting next week, she will be more responsible for packing her lunch box (though I will still decide what goes in it), making sure it and the water bottle makes it into her school bag and taking everything back out when she arrives home.
Quality time and familiar routines Don't forget to relish each moment you get to spend with your kids, whenever it might be. Weekends, afternoons, meals together. Bedtime routines that mean snuggling up with a book and a chat about your day. Sometimes the familiar things provide the longest-lasting memories of childhood. Find more out at http://www.kidsdigfood.com.au/ or call 0413 433 144.

LIP, SLOP, SLAP with the help of an app this summer – smartphones may very well be the newest weapon in the fight against skin cancer. Cancer Council’s updated SunSmart app has already been downloaded more than 140,000 times this month, and as well as having new, improved features, the program is available on platforms including iPhones, iPads, Samsung and Android devices. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson, Katie Clift said, “The revamped SunSmart app allows users to track uV levels in real time wherever they are in Australia, set reminders to be vigilant in uV peak periods and to reapply sunscreen, calculate how much sunscreen should be applied depending on size and outfit, track vitamin D and even access a seven-day weather forecast. It’s shocking, but it’s true – Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Around 3,000 melanoma and 133,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed across the state each year. Around 99 per cent of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to uV radiation. "Melanomas can occur at any age - and can be difficult to diagnose", says Dr Phil Marshall from Maleny

Medical Centre. What looks suspicious to patients may be of no concern - it is often the ones people don't realise can be melanoma." He urges locals to book an annual skin review as part of their annual health check with their GP. "You are most at risk if you are fair haired, of Northern European descent, and if you were born and have lived all your life in Queensland." He says anybody with any worrying skin lesions particularly dark, pigmented or enlarging moles should see their GP. If moles are bleeding, changing colour or irregular - you should make that appointment now.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You Starting off the New Year...
M
AKING NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS doesn’t have to involve spending lots of money on gym Wendy Rosenfeldt memberships or expensive equipment. You can start feeling better just by doing some simple things to purify the body and introducing some easy adjustments to your routine. The mind and body have a natural tendency to purify and rebalance. Most people have the desire to live a better life, whether it’s to eat a healthier diet or improve their fitness. As we are getting over the Christmas indulgence and heading towards the New Year, our thoughts turn to what we could do to improve ourselves. Our bodies spontaneously rejuvenate when we give them the chance to rest. Falling sick is just a cry from the body to stop. When it is burnt out with activity or overloaded with impurities from food, drink and chemicals, it reaches a state where it cannot keep up with the balancing and purification that is always taking place. Recovering from illness doesn’t have to mean that we fill up on supplements and just keep going. A quiet day at home can do wonders for the healing process. Take time out over the holidays for just relaxing instead of feeling that you have fill your social calendar or catch up on odd jobs around the house. Giving the digestion a rest will also allow it to restore balance. Ayurveda doesn’t recommend prolonged fasting and for
some mind/ body types it is not advised at all. However drinking boiled water, hot or at least warm, aids the digestive system to clear impurities from the organs. Just as we use warm water to dissolve grease from our dishes, warm water helps to dissolve toxins and waste in the body. Eating a light meal in the evening and avoiding cheese, chocolate and meat will allow the digestive system a better chance to process the evening meal and then work on cellular metabolism. The time between 10pm and 2am is when the body removes impurities from the physiology. If you eat a large meal at night or eat close to 10pm, your body is struggling to digest the food in your stomach and doesn’t get to the more subtle levels of purification. Having a regular daily routine also supports the physiology. When we get up and go to bed around the same time, have a regular pattern of meals and do some daily exercise, our energy levels, digestion and sleep cycles are optimal. When our meal times and bedtime is always changing the body has to exert extra effort to maintain inner balance. Aligning out daily routine to the cycles of nature gives us the added support of the environment. When we wake up with the sun we get up with a light exhilarating quality that carries through the day.
