HOPE yOu slow down, relax and relish our laidback lifestyle.

weekend and other Australia Day activities.

We do. Note now please - the office is CLOSED until January 16. We'll still check messages and emails.

you can take a poetry trail, try natural doggy products from Maleny Sunday Market, and choose from a varied range of arty and playful holiday activities.

We did escape the office for a few days last month, Charlie Moreland camping, out of mobile range and it was BLISS. It had been almost six months since the six of us were together, we reconnected with bushwalks and BBQs, badminton and books. Make sure if you visit Kondalilla Falls (it amazes me how many locals have not explored their surrounds) that you don't get put off by the extra stairs, like we almost did. What a reward when you take the lookout trail! After all the rains we have had, it is no wonder the falls were magnificent. Even better was our swim under the waterfall. We found some gorgeous swimming holes, what a beautiful corner of Queensland we live in. January holds the free family fun Aussie Day Expo, a cracker line up with the Australian Film Festival

We'll tell you why Maleny is the tourist hot spot with 66% growth in visitor bookings, and everything else "What's On" for the Hinterland.

for the joy of learning

If you are over 50, a whole new world of ideas, inspiration and information is at your fingertips, and in your neighbourhood, thanks to Sunshine Coast U3A - the University of the Third Age. Dale Jacobsen, and others, share why this is such a valuable resource and how you can access it.

HE SuNSHINE COAST u3A is clear about what represents the third age: “It’s that time of freedom from the workforce when you can renew that set-aside passion for art or literature, stay fit and young through learning and social networking and enjoy a sense of wellbeing and purpose with your peers at the university of the Third Age”. It was this spirit of learning through sharing, and having fun in the process, that inspired Marty Foster to go along to the Maleny group. “I have lived here for 20 years but, until five years ago, I didn’t know about the u3A. I attended their Open Day at the university of the Sunshine Coast and have been involved ever since,” she said. As they say, ask a busy woman if you want to get things done. Marty spends her week volunteering with Meals on Wheels, driving for Blackall Range Care Group, in the Maleny Information Centre, Bloomhill Op Shop and at the Sunshine Coast u3A office. She became Class Captain for Maleny u3A lectures when the previous captain suffered ill health. “I can’t take credit for sourcing our speakers,” she explained. “Credit must go to Lyn Lovell who finds the most interesting people to give lectures right across the Sunshine Coast.” However, she is always on the lookout for likely speakers, which is how I came to give a couple of Antarctic presentations at u3A. While Maleny once boasted a varied programme of classes from bushwalking to book binding, these days, it offers a weekly series of lectures that attracts presenters from all walks of life. The day I popped in to take photos, 36 attentive people

were listening to Bob Railton’s lecture: No Detectives Please, We’re British. Another busy woman who also volunteers in the u3A SC office is Merrin Shaw, from Mt Mellum. Merrin has lived on the Range for six years, and during that time has become involved in the local community, coordinating the Sunday Markets at the RSL and knitting crazy tea cosies. “People think it is about keeping tea warm, but it’s about talking stories, sharing memories, laughing.” Merrin would like to see more people involved in offering their talents to widen the scope of classes on the Range. “We live in a dynamic community. I’ve met some incredibly talented and educated people in these hills, and there are probably many out there who could share their gifts. For example, it would be fantastic to have a series of photography classes, or swimming, languages such as conversational French.” There is a comprehensive Guide to Tutors provided to people who have the time, inspiration and talent to share. The university of the Third Age began in Australia in 1984. u3A Sunshine Coast Inc. formed two years later, now celebrating over 30 continuous years, and is attached to the university of the Sunshine Coast at Sippy Downs. With over 2,000 members on the coast, it holds classes in many centres from Coolum to Caloundra, and from the Range to the Coast. Marty explained what is needed to belong. “If you are over 50 and no longer work full-time, you will be made most welcome. Most of our tutors are retired professional people, many have been university lecturers, but of course, that’s not essential.” Apart from the obvious benefits of belonging to the u3A,

members can also (with permission) sit in on lectures at the university, make use of equipment, use the library, gym and swimming pool. “We have a wonderful collaboration with the uni,” said Merrin. Marty elaborated: “They treat us as part of the Campus. They also draw on our membership if they need older people. For example, some of us took part in the Brain Gym for Dementia Prevention programme”. Each year, u3A Sunshine Coast holds an Open Day at the university where people can come along, ask questions of the lecturers or u3A admin staff. In 2018, it will be held on Saturday, January 13 at the Innovation Centre, university of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs. There will be signage to direct people. During Open Day, people will be able to check out the wide range of courses on offer across the Sunshine Coast, join up, or renew their membership. “The system was computerised last year,” said Marty. “Not everyone is computer literate (although that would be a really good class to run in Maleny) and we can help out. All they have to do is ask.” Cost is minimal, at $40 per year. Some classes also ask for a small amount if a venue is hired, or there are materials used, but costs are kept as low as possible. The u3A is run entirely by volunteers as a not-for-profit organisation. If you are interested in joining as a member or would like to know more about becoming a tutor, contact: U3A Sunshine Coast: phone: 5430 1123 (9am-12noon Mon-Fri) secretary@u3asunshine.org.au www.u3asunshine.org.au

If you need to restore your faith in humanity or your hope for the planet, head to the Fix It Café at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, every second and fourth Thursday of the month. Victoria McGuin paid them a visit recently and came away feeling replenished, in more ways than one.

Fantastic

Fix It

Nev and Jo love being part of the team by Victoria McGuin

I

HAVE BEEN frequenting the Maleny Fix It Café sporadically for some time now, for repairing muchloved skirts, tops and dresses, to mending my second-hand vacuum cleaner. It feels good to know you are avoiding landfill and extending the life of your household goods and clothing. It only costs $5 for the team to check over your item, and if they fix it you can choose to donate more. The Fix It Café was started in 2012, by Dolina Somerville and Paul Williamson, and is based on a repair-style café which originated in Amsterdam in 2009. Over the years the team has steadily grown, with members specialising in electronics, bicycles, sewing, general maintenance, furniture repair and mechanics. Jim Straker, the Fix It Café coordinator, welcomes me, and friendly faces look up from kettles, suitcases, bicycles and sewing machines.

6

HINTERLAND TIMES – JANuARy 2018

“Some days we have quite a few things to fix,” says Jim, “But other Thursdays we are twiddling our thumbs, which isn’t good. We need more people to use this resource.” Member Jo brings me a cup of tea, and her husband, Nev, takes a short break from fixing a bike to join us. I pick up an accent from over the pond. “I was actually born in Sydney,” says Nev, “but my parents moved to the uK when I was small.” Nev and Jo married in 1960 and lived in Salisbury until 1969. “We came back to Australia with our four children,” says Jo, “and had one more here – our Australian baby!” The weather played a big factor in their move, Nev recalls, “The winter of 1962, from Bristol to Hull, it didn’t rise above freezing point from Boxing Day for three months, to the day!” “Nev had to go to work on a motorbike in that,” adds Jo. “I worked on Post Office telephones, which eventually became BT, but I always had an interest in bikes,” Nev continues. “I raced them – the cycle speedway was popular. I would modify bikes, go to the dump to find parts and old bikes to restore.

“Our cycle speedway team was called the Bemerton Boomerangs, Bemerton was my village. We even made our own track.” This background makes Nev the perfect person to bring your bike to, for anything from wheel alignment to modifications. Josie is another busy member of the group, having joined roughly five years ago. “I know I have a talent and I wanted to share it,” she says simply. “We are living in a throwaway world and we have to take responsibility. We have to know what we’ve got.” Josie has been sewing since she was five years old, “I used to watch my mum on her machine. When she would go and feed the chooks I would get on the sewing machine. She always knew though – I don’t know how!” Weddings dresses, deb dresses, shirts, skirts… Josie’s daughter says, ‘There’s nothing you can’t make, Mum’. “I was a wedding designer for a while in Brisbane. I made my first wedding dress when I was 18. I didn’t buy a dress until I was 30, I made my own. I didn’t even know you could buy knickers for many years! I made mini

Everyone here is a volunteer, and they like to spread the message of the Fix It Café. “Paul and Daryl went up to Noosa to set up a stall for the Floating Islands a while back. And a group of us went to Woodford to show what we do, and run workshops – Nev had a lot of bike repairs there!” It is time for the community lunch at the Centre, and I enjoy home-cooked produce, interesting conversations with strangers, and live music from Danny Rose. As I leave, with a full stomach and a full heart, Jim shakes my hand and thanks me for coming. “It’s good to spread the word,” he says. “We need more people to bring their stuff. The Fix It Café needs to fix things!” Jim puts up the cafe sign for the day

VISIT: dresses with knickers to match.” Jim joins us - things are quietening down for a few members. “I don’t have that problem!” says Josie. “Hush up and keep sewing!” laughs Jim. The banter between the group is warm and full of jokes. “It’s wonderful,” Jim says, “It keeps us all together. We tell some stories! I have one about… no I’d better not!” He smiles with a glint of mischief in his eye. Jim has worked in the ‘garbage business’ since 1974, “so I understand the importance in not chucking things out,” he says. A Cooran boy, he now lives in Reesville after years travelling whilst in the army, and working in local government and environmental jobs. “I’d been working in the Middle East and needed something to do,” he tells me. “I knew Dolina and she mentioned this place. I came in to have a look and I’ve been helping out ever since.” Jim has ideas to expand the offerings at the Fix It Café. “I run courses on how to help people change tap washers,” he says, and brings out a homemade stand with various taps/washers/plumbing attached. “Isn’t it brilliant?” says Josie. “I like to empower people to fix things themselves,” Jim continues. “you know the old proverb, ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish…’” The next idea is to run car maintenance workshops. “Show people how to change a tyre, check the water, windscreen wipers, find the jack, gain a basic knowledge of the engine. “We could run it now, but we’d ideally like a retired mechanic to run it. We will be able to park six cars to do each workshop.”

Olive also shared with them that her mother was a good pianist and dancer. “On Saturday nights they would move the furniture out of the lounge and people would come from around the area for dances,” Maryanne shares. “There was limited room so only a few couples at a time could dance while the rest socialised out in front of the house.” Olive gave Justin photos of the house and surrounds from the 1930s. "you can see from one photograph that at some stage later in their ownership, the back of the house was extended, bathroom and side stairs were added.” Another picture shows a big white hoe that Alf must have used, which has a significance for the Bulling family. A few years ago, one of Justin and Maryanne’s sons was using his metal detector in the front yard and became very excited when it began to beep. They all began to dig and

LIVE WAS JuST a little girl when the Higson family emigrated to Australia from England and moved to a small cottage on Flaxton. Her grandmother had been a competent tailoress, who worked on gentlemen’s suits in London; her mother (before her marriage) won numerous gold medals for a swimming prowess. yet now, all three women were embarking on a completely different life. Olive’s memories of life at Kondalilla Cottage evoke strong images of times gone by, of struggle, and of an innocence many feel is perhaps lost too soon today. From her walking down the valley each morning to bring up the cows, to owning no shoes and resorting to standing in cow pats to warm her feet. “There was a big tree outside their bedroom then, as they used to climb out the window into the tree,” Justin shares. “Norm and Ron were enrolled at Montville School in the mid-1920s, and both eventually became engineers; the other children attended school at the Flaxton School where Range Care is now. “They had a horse and three of them rode bareback on the horse to school every day. The school had a fenced paddock where the children could leave their horses.” Olive said they only left the Range once a year for the annual picnic at the beach. “I Top left: The Gallagher family who lived at Kondalilla Cottage in the 1960s think they went by car to Palmwoods then Above: A young Jan Wyer at Kondalilla Cottage to the beach by train,” Justin says.

The next family was Patricia and Nick Viner, a mother and son, followed by Paul and Lek Sykes in the 1970s. “The son has a mechanic business in Mapleton at his house and he was born in 1964 same as me. His father was a builder and he built some of the extension, establishing it as a craft shop, and made and sold wooden toys there,” says Justin. From 1979, according the Barbara Ramadge-Ross’ research, Pat and Alan Carrott continued the toy-making and craft, until they sold to Tom and Bev Philips in 1989. However, Tom died tragically and Brisbane couple, Dennis and Iris Blackburn, continued the renovations Tom started and a created a café and craft centre there. “Iris is now in her 80s, and she still brings her pet to me for check-ups,” smiles Justin. “Then came Colleen in 1994 who ran a corner store with her mother, Amber MacKinnon. They named the business ‘Kondalilla Cottage Café’. She sold a few years before I came and lived in Flaxton,” Justin continues. “After her came the family who let the place fall apart, and ended up putting Maryanne off renting!” Walking into the home recently, I was enveloped in its cosy warmth, with the log fire, beautiful views across the undulating hills of Flaxton/Montville and the buzz and chatter of a young family. Children and animals all enjoying the space together. This building had been a house, café, shop, restaurant, and now a veterinary service, albeit to the side. The Bulling family are certainly worthy custodians; they have restored this character-filled cottage and made it, once again, a home. “We need to get a plaque made next, saying Kondalilla Cottage,” says Maryanne. “Just another job!” laughs Justin.

found one of the blades of the hoe. “you know, I still have that hoe,” smiles Justin. Another photograph shows Olive and a brother on the front steps. “It seems many families who lived here have a family photo with the kids on the front steps. I’d better take one too!” Justin says. After the Higson family left, the cottage had many owners. The Gallaghers were next, who ran a dairy, and Jan Wyer fondly remembers growing up there in the ‘60s. Justin shows a picture of the little blonde Jan with a cow, and another photo of her on the stairs. I spoke to Jan, who shared some of her fond memories. “I had a lovely childhood there. I made pets of all the animals, of course. Cows and bulls and all sorts of things. “Kondaliilla Falls was my back yard. us kids would get a slice of bread and sausage and an adult would set up a little fire to cook our food on down there. “So many memories come back! My brother would get up on the shed roof right beside the house, with a sheet he thought he was Superman. He would jump off, but he never broke anything! “It was a beautiful place to live. The toilet was out back, which was a bit scary for a little girl. I had a swing underneath, and we had a wash house which was a good place for snakes. “We had a carpet snake in the roof as well. And one day someone asked what was dripping? Nothing, it was a snake! Mum went and got the rifle and shot it! My poor brother had to get up and get it out. “We had a wood stove. The first thing I wanted when I got married was a wood stove… everything tastes better. I feel so nostalgic, I’m going to have to get the photo albums out now!”

HINTERLAND TIMES – JANuARy 2018

T IS IN OuR nature to enjoy watching and interacting with animals. This is, after all, why we have pets. We like to care for them. To nurture them. Some well-meaning people extend this care and attention to the wildlife that visits their backyard, but wild animals are just that – wild. They have not evolved alongside humans as pets. In a well-balanced ecosystem hunters and prey alike vary with the seasons and the availability of food. In poor seasons, fewer young are reared; conversely, in good seasons, population surges. By artificially providing food year round, native animals, particularly birds, lose this instinct and often it is the opportunistic species (eg rainbow lorikeets) that benefit. And, no matter how much you might think you are providing what the birds need, there is the danger that they will suffer vitamin deficiencies. A well-documented example is Lumpy Jaw that develops in kangaroos and wallabies when fed bread. Such soft food leads to inflammation of the jaw allowing bacteria to enter. The animal is then unable to graze its natural food and

Wild inevitably dies from malnutrition. There is also risk of spreading disease when different animals feed from the one source. A ranger from QPWS was called out to help a woman who feared something was wrong with ‘her’ birds as they didn’t have any feathers. When he arrived, he found very sickly, virtually bald, rainbow lorikeets picking grain from a heap of guano beneath the feeding table. It is rewarding to observe birds and animals, including frogs and lizards, in the wild; to see a kookaburra dive into the earth and emerge with a worm. By providing a garden of plants native to the area, nest boxes, and water sources, you can watch without affecting the outcome and upsetting the natural balance. Feeding native animals diminishes the feeling of seeing something in the wild. Keep it special. Important points to remember: ● human food lacks essential nutrients ● animals become dependent, lose hunting ability ● disease easily spreads from common feeding point ● increased breeding results when there is abundant food ● animal behaviour is modified, often leading to aggression ● opportunists outbreed more timid species upsetting natural balance and ● feeding stations attract unwanted pests. What you can do: ● plant species native to the area ● provide nesting boxes ● provide water sources and ● place a garden seat in the shade to enjoy watching. HIS JANuARy, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has a great range of holiday activities called Wing It - see our holiday guide in this edition, plus there’s more coming up for adults...

January 31 Birds behaving badly: Living alongside birds in urban environments (3 - 4.30pm – Free) In rapidly urbanising environments, humans encroach ever increasingly into the habitats of native animals. But just how well do magpies, bush turkeys and people live alongside each other? In this free public lecture well-known urban ecologist and badly behaved birds whisperer, Professor Darryl Jones, from Griffith university, shares some secrets for living more harmoniously with our avian neighbours.

February 21 In pursuit of the perfect photo: the adventures of a bird photographer (3-4.30pm – Free) Iconic and much-loved photographer, Steve Parish,

shares his amazing journey with all the ups and downs it entails in his pursuit for the perfect photo.

January - March Free weekly bird walks with members of the Sunshine Coast Birds Australia Chapter offered during Mary Cairncross Birds of a Feather season (December-March). 7.15am-9am. Stay for a special birders breakfast afterwards. Check Council’s What’s On for details.

April 18 Coxen's fig parrot: A bird that remains stubbornly out of the hand We know they are out there, yet the Coxen’s fig parrot is one of those species that remains stubbornly elusive and mysterious. There have been many sightings of them in our local area, yet no single confirmed sighting or indeed photograph even exists of this bird, which may indeed be one of the rarest birds on the planet. Dr Ian Gynther, Senior Conservation Officer with the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Threatened Species unit leads the fight to find and preserve this species. At 2-3.30pm, hear about recent

updates on sightings and learn about what to look for, where you might find these birds and what you can do to help join the fight for their existence. Check Council’s What’s On page for booking details. Search under the environment category. https://events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/

WHAT ARE YOUR

REFUND RIGHTS? Every now and then you might want to return a particular purchase to the store for a refund or exchange but you might be confused about your legal rights. Your confusion is undoubtedly increased when you see stores displaying signage stating that the store will not give a refund for certain items. Items where I have sometimes seen ‘no refund’ signs are on products such as sale items, swimwear, sunglasses, or opened products. These signs are misleading. Although retailers do not have to exchange or refund perfect goods, they cannot contract out of their obligation to provide you with a refund if the goods or services that you purchased: • Have a fault that you could not have known about at the time of purchase; • Are not the same as the description provided by the salesperson or advertisement; • Do not match the sample you were shown at the time of purchase; and/or • Do not do the job as you were led to believe. You are not entitled to a refund if you: • Simply change your mind or no longer want the goods; • Realise you can’t afford the goods; • Found the same item at a cheaper price elsewhere; • Chose the wrong size or colour; • Knew about the particular fault prior to purchase; and/or • Were responsible for causing the fault.

Tove is Easton Lawyers’ full time principal lawyer and also the Hinterland’s longest serving principal lawyer serving since January 2004. She specializes in all commercial law matters as well as wills and estates, leases, partnership and company matters. She has always had a policy of providing the first consultation free of charge. That gives clients peace of mind that they are not up for legal fees before they have even had advice on their questions.

We are y a d i l o h a hot spot M

ALENy IS RISING in popularity among travellers, with bookings to the destination having grown by 66.1 percent in the last two years, through the world’s largest platform for hotel bookings by volume. Identified as a travel hot spot based through an analysis of bookings on hotel price comparison platform HotelsCombined.com.au, they describe a hot spot as being any travel destination that has seen at least 20-30 percent growth between January-June 2016 and again in JanuaryJune 2017 (to account for high and low season). As a result, Maleny is outpacing the growth seen in the more coastal parts of the Sunshine Coast: Alexandra Headland had 26 percent growth across the period, Caloundra had 17.2 percent growth, while Mooloolaba experienced growth of 6 percent. The growth further north of the popular Sunshine Coast district was no match for Maleny either, with Coolum Beach experiencing 27.5 percent growth and Noosa Heads seeing 13.4 percent growth. Maleny Terrace Cottages Manager, Alison Neale, said that it was great news, "Bookings have been steadily growing since our refurbishment and reopening in March. "Our weekends are really busy, and it depends on what events are in town." As well as the wedding market, they offer accommodation and dinner packages with Terrace Seafood Restaurant to build their mid-week bookings. "We have three restaurants in walking distance - there's also the Thai restaurant, andThe Orangery opens for breakfast and lunch as well." They make the most of our location and send people to Mary Cairncross Reserve for a walk. "It's such a beautiful spot - they can overlook the Glasshouse Mountains, and Gardners Falls is just down the road." Mark Skinner from Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat also makes the most of our beautiful destination, " The Hinterland has a huge appeal to international tourists because they are looking for nature-based experiences, having the rainforest here and wildlife and beautiful scenery is a drawcard." Mark says business is continually increasing for them in Montville as well, "A broader catchment of customers are coming to us. It is the European, interstate and not just the Brisbane drive market, which traditionally has been the market for the area. "you can go to any travel agent in the uK, Switzerland and France and you'll see that Montville will be represented. "The way people book travel is changing, more and more people are booking online as opposed to travel agents - the fact we're brochured in those travel agents is also raising awareness so people will find us."

SwimSafe

He says that Visit Sunshine Coast have greatly assisted in raising the awareness of the area as well, through direct marketing and industry development. "They are providing an International Ready workshop on February 15 and the understanding Asia workshop on April 24 in Montville. We'd like to get as many operators to it as possible and amplify that message further." Data from Tourism and Events Queensland shows that in the year ending June 2017, overnight domestic visitors to the Sunshine Coast region grew by 4.9 percent.

Judging by the amount of papers we supply and resupply Maleny Visitor Information Centre, the Hinterland is a hot spot for travellers - volunteer Brunton said HT had everything tourists needed to know - accommodation, where to eat, galleries, things to do, events and more!

Intrastate visitors account for 74 percent of total domestic tourist numbers (mainly from Brisbane), while interstate visitors grew by 13.9 percent.

MVA President, Deb Davis. This will be followed by speeches and the Mapleton Choir, with the flag raising ceremony at 8.40am by Andrew Walter and Montville State School 2016 School Captains. The Citizenship Awards are presented at 8.45am and the ceremony closes, with thanks, just after 9am.

T

HERE WILL BE a Remembrance Ceremony, during which a minute's silence will be observed, to remember the Indigenous people of this continent, and its islands, who lost their lives in the changing possession of this land that began on January 26, 1788. Anyone is welcome to attend the Remembrance Ceremony, to be held from 10- 11am, on Friday, January 26, 2018, in the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny. Some 180 years ago, the following statement was issued in 1837 in the Report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons on Aborigines (British

Settlements). ‘Their land has been taken from them without the assertion of any other title than that of superior force...they have an incontrovertible right to their own soil, a plain and sacred right which seems not to have been understood.’ This Remembrance Ceremony in 2018 gives an opportunity to remember and honour those who died in seeking to defend and hold their homeland. Take a trail of poetry

L

AuNCHED AT Pattemore House, Maleny, last month, by Cr. Jenny McKay, the Poetry Trail is open. A morning tea, prepared by The Orangery, Maleny, was praised by everyone attending for the wonderful variety of delicacies, perfect for the celebration. The organisation of the tea was by the Friends of Pattemore House ladies, who did a marvellous job. The poets, Judith Bandidt, Lyn Browne and Deanne Lister, spoke a few words about how the project came into being, and thanked their long-suffering husbands for their help and amazing patience over a long period. MP Andrew Powell also attended, and special guests from the area included Val Carberry, a Pattemore family descendant, and her husband Vince. Guests later took a walk to view the sculptures by Wayne Markwort, who talked about his designs. They were able to listen to the poetry produced with the aid of QR codes beside the sculptures. A very innovative piece of work. The book of the Hinterland Poetry Trail was launched during the morning tea. As well as poetry, this coffee-table book is illustrated partly by David Peart, the photographer, including the sensational cover picture taken beneath a huge fig tree in the forest. Details of the poets and artists appear in its pages, and stories of the POETICATS, adventurous cats who love poetry, are there for any young-at-heart readers. The sites at Montville Russell Family Park and Kenilworth's Little yabba Creek, also had special celebrations to launch the Poetry Trail, with guests viewing the artwork by Wayne Smith at Montville and Barry Smith at Little yabba Creek, and the poets reading their work.

Above: Judith Bandidt, Deanne Lister and Lyn Browne celebrate the opening of the Hinterland Poetry Trail in Maleny Top: You'll find poetry-inscribed artwork of a fig's buttress root by Barry Smith at Little Yabba Creek, south of Kenilworth

These events were the final celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. The Trail will be open 24/7 to the public, and maps and brochures are available at each site.

Bruce Buchanan, the well-known watercolour artist, will make a special appearance in the Gallery on Saturday 13 January between 11.00am and 2.00pm. Bruce will be chatting about his works and inspirations, and we will have a special display of his recent paintings in the gallery for the month of January. Bruce is a realist landscape painter, whose work focuses on natural and man-made landscapes, and often a combination of both. Having been an architect for most of his working life, he is naturally attracted to the structure, form, perspective, scale and details of buildings, and the incredible technical detail in his paintings reflect this. Bruce is unlikely to paint iconic landmarks, preferring modest workaday buildings that can be seen in a different light. Industrial buildings, sheds, grain silos and structures also feature, often for their sculptural qualities which often turn into studies of form and shadow. Subtle details tell a compelling story – a reflective window, an open door, an old disused sign. Bruce also has a keen interest in our coast, and recent works have captured the mood of storms and overcast days along ocean beaches, and the tranquil settings of boats in their moorings. Bruce has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, and his work is represented in many public and private collections. He was born in Brisbane and still lives in South East Queensland. Images of Bruce’s watercolours can also be seen on our website, please contact us if you wish to view or have an artwork held for you.

The Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse

Basics to Brilliance

A Long Way From Home

By Donna Hay

by Peter Carey

written by Mac Barrett Illustrated by Jon Klassen

Finally! The fantastic Donna Hay has produced a cook book for kids! And it’s wonderful! Basics to Brilliance Kids is exactly as the title suggests — basic recipes that make brilliant feasts that you can create with your children. Or that they can create themselves. Each recipe is delivered simply, with step-by-step instructions, helpful notes and tips to help you and your children on your way. Basics to Brilliance Kids is a recipe book for the keeping.

Irene Bobs loves fast driving. Her husband is the best car salesman in rural south eastern Australia. Together with Willie, their lanky navigator, they embark upon the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent, over roads no car will ever quite survive. A Long Way from Home is Peter Carey's late style masterpiece; a thrilling high speed story that starts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s in the embers of the British Empire, painting a picture of Queen and subject, black, white and those in-between, this brilliantly vivid novel illustrates how the possession of an ancient culture spirals through history and the love made and hurt caused along the way. Fast-paced, completely engaging and full of trademark Carey eccentrics, A Long Way from Home is a fantastic read that you will not be able to put down once you have picked it up.

This is a story about a mouse and a duck who get swallowed by a wolf. When a woeful mouse is swallowed by a wolf, he quickly learns he is not alone: a duck has already set himself up, and, boy, has that duck got it worked out! Turns out it’s pretty nice in there, with delicious food and elegant table settings, courtesy of the wolf’s untamed gluttony. And, the duck quickly explains to the mouse, there’s something even better: no more fear of being eaten by a wolf! In fact, life is pretty good, until a hunter shows up. . . . With a nod to traditional fables, a wink to the reader, Klassen’s signature palette and the heightened action propelled by Barnett’s narrative all meld together to make this story the delight that it is. A howl!

Summer and a good book go hand in hand. In 2018, it's ten years of the Indie Book Awards. They recognise indie booksellers as the number one supporters of Australian authors. Since the inception of the Awards, they have a well-deserved reputation for picking the best of the best in Australian writing. Anne Brown from Rosetta Books says, "How lucky we are to have such loyal customers who love their books - grandparents are insistent on buying books." Anne says younger people are also customers, "We have now lived through Amazon, Kindles, we are still here and books are just as popular as ever….".

Titles for your summer reading The Fiction Longlist for the Indie Book Awards 2018 includes:

A Long Way from Home by Peter Carey Set in the 1950s amid the consequences of the age of empires, this brilliantly vivid and lively novel reminds us how Europeans took possession of a timeless culture – the high purpose they invented and the crimes they committed along the way.

Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of suspicion, violence and disintegrating trust. And as he delves into the disappearance, it seems some dangers may run far deeper than anyone knew.

There's plenty to choose from at independent book store, Rosetta Books

Taboo by Kim Scott The Life to Come by Michelle de Kretser Profoundly moving as well as wickedly funny, The Life to Come reveals how the shadows cast by both the past and the future can transform, distort and undo the present. This extraordinary novel by Miles Franklin-winning author Michelle de Kretser will strike to your soul.

We walk with the ragtag group through this taboo country and note in them glimmers of re-connection with language, lore, country. We learn alongside them how countless generations of Noongar may have lived in ideal rapport with the land. This is a novel of survival and renewal, as much as destruction; and, ultimately, of hope as much as despair.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case - and Alice knew secrets. About the company she worked for and the people she worked with.

City of Crows by Chris Womersley France, 1673. Desperate to save herself and her only surviving child from an outbreak of plague, the widow Charlotte Picot flees her village to seek sanctuary in Lyon, when her child is stolen.

This is not only a story of Paris and its streets thronged with preachers, troubadours and rogues. It is also the tale of a woman who calls herself a sorceress, and a demon who thinks he is a man ... The Shortlist will be announced on January 15, and winners announced in March. you'll find these titles and books from non fiction, debut fiction, children and young adult categories at Rosetta Books, 30 Maple Street, Maleny, or order yours now on 5435 2134. 26—28 Jan 2018

The Innocents Saturday January 13 at 7.15pm at Maleny Community Centre, 6-7pm doors open for dinner catered by Wild Rocket, with bar/tea/coffee and slices available. Inspired by a true story, a young French doctor (Mathilde) is summoned to a convent in Poland in 1945 where she finds a nun giving birth, and a number of others in advanced stages of pregnancy. Mathilde is challenged by the circumstances, by being an unbeliever of life in the convent, and by trying to help in secret while not authorised to do so. Values are questioned, authority challenged, and systems are forced to reshape themselves.

The Much Misunderstood and Mistakenly Maligned Mistletoes

I

N THE SPIRIT OF Christmas past let’s talk mistletoe’s, not the plastic stuff decorating some doorways during Christmas and an excuse for unwanted advances ... but those native plants that amazingly grow on and join to other trees! For some the thought of a plant drawing on the bodily fluids of another plant conjures up images of herbaceous vampires sucking the life out of our trees. These plants may draw on the moisture and mineral reserves of their hosts but what many of us may not notice is what they give back to the greater ecological community and the many species of animals and insects that depend on them. There are over 30 species of mistletoe found in SE Queensland. Mistletoes are spread by numerous animals and there is even a specialist Mistletoe Bird. These little birds have a specialised digestive system that passes the seed within a ½ hour (now that’s what you call regular!). The seed of mistletoe have a long sticky tail that passes through the digestive system. This long sticky tail requires that the little birds wipe their backsides on a branch as they pass the seed to completely pass the seed tail. This ensures that the seed is placed in the best position for it to grow, on a branch. The seed tail also helps it adhere to the branch.

There is also another amazing animal – mistletoe relationship with Azure butterflies. They are exclusive mistletoe feeders and some also require the presence of specific ants to protect the caterpillars in exchange for food secreted from glands on their bodies. Some Azure caterpillars hide under bark, in borer holes or ant nests during the day and at night with their ant body guards may travel upto 40 metres, to mistletoes high up in eucalypts. Amazingly the leaves of mistletoe often mimic those of their host. There are even mistletoes that only grow on other mistletoes’ such as the Golden Mistletoe. One mistletoe species that does make a living in our local rainforests is the Rainforest Mistletoe. These have very attractive red flowers that attract a variety of wildlife. So next time you see a Mistletoe don’t panic – the apocalypse isn’t upon us. They are an important part of the intricate web of life and if we keep playing with the threads we will all come undone. It could even be argued that it is worthwhile “planting” mistletoes on our gardens and reveg’ plots to enhance diversity and return them to areas they have disappeared from through clearing. But that’s another story.

Planting Xmas

S

HOuLD yOuR MIND be blank over Xmas gifts, it’s a perfect time after the rain to be adding to the garden and the revegetation projects. Call into the Barung nursery to see what is on offer and give a plant to a friend or family. Failing that, there are a number of excellent books at Barung’s office in the Hinterland Business Centre in Coral St. When choosing plants for a new project, look for canopy trees whose foliage is carried right to the ground. They are great edge sealers that reduce the quantity of weed seeds invading the planting area. Two species worth considering are Syzygium australe, the fast-growing River or Brush cherry (pictured), and Mallotus philippensis, Red Kamala. The latter takes a while to establish but is a hardy and very useful tree, often used as an overnight perch for small birds. The fruit is covered in a red powder, once used as a dye. Structured edge planting makes a

difference to any project. Add lomandra for its dense growth habit low to the ground. In a dry area, native grasses are useful, common ones being Barbed Wire

Grass, Cymbopogon refractus, and Kangaroo Grass, Themeda triandra, formerly Themeda australis. A technique used to help young trees establish is to place a pad of mulch over each prospective planting site. The mulch will conserve moisture, suppress weed growth and allow the soil to become more friable until such time as planting can be done. Three benefits in one and no need to spray unless really nasty vines are infesting the site. Spraying often results in bare soil and therefore more weeds should planting be delayed. It’s also not so good for the beneficial soil microflora, which are encouraged by the mulch layer. It’s a busy time of year but take some time out to enjoy our wonderful environment, and to take advantage of the gift of rain and soil moisture. Happy Xmas from everyone at Barung.

Barnacles T

HE RENAISSANCE OF Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership, proclaimed with such jubilation by John Alexander after regaining the seat of Bennelong, lasted just 24 hours. Then Newspoll arrived with its all too familiar message: the government was still stuck in the doldrums six points behind Labor in the two-party preferred vote. Twenty-five gone, and counting. Back to the dark ages. However, our perennially cheerful prime minister had ducked and weaved his way through Christmas with the merry message that things were now on the up and up: he had scraped off three persistent barnacles from the ship of state and once again he could get on with the real issues. But a closer examination reveals that the barnacles have not been scraped off at all, merely temporarily sedated until parliament resumes. They are, in order, same-sex marriage, energy policy and the dual citizen saga, and none of the three can be considered settled, let alone scraped. Same-sex marriage, of course, is now law, to almost everyone’s great relief. But there is an aftermath – the review from Phillip Ruddock and co into what is euphemistically called religious protection. This may be kept under cover for a while, but has the potential to be just as divisive and dirty as the lengthy debate it spawned. If there was any doubt, the Christian Lobby and the other churches, along with their willing evangelists in the parliament, have made it clear that this is where the real battle begins. And they have no shortage of firepower: the Catholics’ response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Child Abuse, which was essentially that they would obey the law only when and where it suited them, was unequivocal. Rome will be a bloody big barnacle. And as for energy – well, the bills (which is what the voters really care about) will keep going up – until, ironically, more wind and solar power come on line in several months – certainly not in time for the long, hot summer. A reduction in the wholesale price of gas will be unnoticeable, and Turnbull’s beloved Snowy Hydro 2.0 is not yet even a hole in the ground. Turnbull says sustainability of supply is now secure, and he had better be right: a serious blackout in any of the major cities would destroy whatever credibility over the issue he has left. Just keep scraping. And as for dual citizenship – Turnbull apparently

W

OW! I KEEP trying to get away from writing about destruction and focus on the glories of the arboricultural world, when yet another supercell has flattened a narrow band of country between Landsborough and Beerwah. Along the railway line is a scene of mayhem, with the Steve Irwin way being cut, and whole trees uprooted and snapped off near ground level. What can we learn from this? Several things. Most of the trees fell in a northerly direction, which shows that although the winds were circling, the most destructive gusts came from the South, which confirms the accepted theories in this region. Most of the trees that failed were

intends to unilaterally refer his suspected opponents to the High Court, while maintaining, in a curious echo from Bill Shorten’s ill-advised bravado, that all his own are squeaky clean. It is a sure bet that the media will not be assuaged, and a likely bet that more problems, including some on his own side, will be turned up. And by throwing the crossbencher Rebeka Sharkie into the mix, he has ensured that her support for noconfidence motions is no longer guaranteed. He obviously believes that with the return of Alexander and Barnaby Joyce this is no longer vital, but he has left another barnacle nonetheless. But undeterred, Turnbull has embarked on another round of barnacle scraping in the form of a drastic reshuffle, in which four limpets have been more firmly despatched. George Brandis is to retire his pomposity to the Court of St James, and while he will not be greatly missed – after all, his exit has been signalled for more than a year – he has been a staunch Turnbull ally in a party room where there are all too few of them. The same applies to Arthur Sinodinos, who has had his travails over corporate donations (linked, dare we say it, to Eddie Obeid among others) but was seen as one of Turnbull’s main men until sickness has sidelined him. Darren Chester can be considered unlucky; he has hardly revolutionised the infrastructure portfolio, but he has done little wrong – except, of course, for voting for same-sex marriage, an unforgiveable sin in the eyes of some of his National Party colleagues. And he was particularly off side with his leader, Barnaby Joyce. But what struck him down, we are told, was not his stand on human rights, but his place of residence: Chester is a Victorian, and the party wanted more Queenslanders in cabinet. Or so they say: the other who has been turfed, Keith Pitt, is a dead-set Queenslander, but apparently he doesn’t count. The Nats will not countenance affirmative action for women, that would be discrimination, politicians must succeed on their merits. Except, of course, those north of the Tweed: they don’t have enough of them to qualify. And there was still just enough time to crow about the national accounts figures, which shaved an insignificant amount, and probably temporary, from the deficit. Jobs and growth, trumpeted Turnbull, is not just a slogan but an outcome. Well, perhaps some of it. A lot of jobs have indeed been

Eucalypts. Gums etc. Again, no surprises there. The only way to prevent whole tree failure in Eucalypts in these circumstances is to prune them so as to reduce their sail area. Any specimens that had a canopy reduction by previous storm events or pruning, resulting in a shorter, stockier tree, survived. The usual suspects - tight forks, decaying branch stubs, and other defects that I have discussed in this column – were the typical failure points, but in an event like this there were also clean, healthy, defect-free sections that failed. The only way to prevent this is to shorten

created, although many of them are low-paid and given the current stagnation over wages, they are not likely to become much more attractive. But economic growth has actually been forecast to decline from 2.75 per cent – no bonanza in its own right – to 2.5 per cent. Naturally, this manifestly inadequate result was yet another win for the government, said Treasurer Scott Morrison. In fact, actually most of it came from a fortuitous rise in commodity prices and cuts on welfare. Despite the demands of an ageing population, the numbers of welfare recipients are the lowest in more than 40 years, which Treasurer Scott Morrison obviously thinks is a good thing. This is not a view that is necessarily shared by the victims – old age, disabled and single-parent pensioners, to name but a few. And now that the senate has jacked up against further cuts, Morrison will resort to the mean and tricky device of using regulations to defy the clear will of the parliament of Australia. Turnbull now admits that he regrets including Newspoll as a reason for ousting Tony Abbott – but then, he never dreamt that he would be in a similar, or even worse, position. However, at least he has survived the killing season – Christmas comes but once a year/ To fill our leader’s heart with fear. Now there’s just 2018 to contend with… For auld acquaintance be forgot. And especially if that auld acquaintance happens to include Tony Abbott.

EAD DOWN THE Obi Obi Road in Mapleton and you will soon see the Hospice Shop, full to the brim with books, toys, curios and useful items, perfect for a good browse. Why not grab a couple of friends and pop up (or over) for a morning to visit? They have stocks of good quality pre-loved ladies, mens and childrens clothing, shoes, bags, hats and jewellery! There is always a bargain to be found and you will be served by helpful, smiling volunteers. If you don’t op shop, there are some good reasons to start. Not only does it support charities, but it is ethically and environmentally friendly, saves you money and gives you the chance to experiment and find something that isn’t ‘mainstream’. Some say it is like hunting for treasure, and often finding it! Donations are always welcome, and please call if you need help with the delivery of these goods. We are at 17 Obi Obi Road Mapleton, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and Saturday 9am to 12.30pm. Tel: 07 5478 6155.

IRST 5 FOREVER'S very first Story Seat has been installed at Pioneer Park, Landsborough. Another nine seats, featuring even more great books, will be put in parks across the region, ten of 320 across the state. Work has begun at Montville's Russell Family Park (pictured) where the Story Seat will feature artwork from the popular children’s book The Children Who Loved Books, by local author Peter Carnavas, from New Frontier Publishing. This colourful book has been chosen as the Storytime book for ABC’s Playschool. As part of the First 5 Forever family literacy program, families with children will be invited to explore the magic of children’s picture books at the purpose-built Story Seats. Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries had been granted $1 million over four years by the Queensland Government to implement the First 5 Forever program. “The aim of this universal family literacy program is to support strong language and literacy environments for young children and their families,” Cr McKay said. The Story Seat in Russell Family Park is due for completion around mid-January.

DENTIFyING A GAP in the supply of residential housing in Maleny the developer was prompted to go ahead with the construction of “Stirling on Bunya”. The units are targeted at those buyers on the lower end of Maleny house prices as well as investors, first home buyers or retirees. Light, airy and contemporary all of the units have two bedrooms, open plan air conditioned living areas, modern kitchens, spacious bathrooms, laundry facilities, screens, fans and built in robes. SCHOOL NEWS

Alternative schooling is ‘old’ news on the Hinterland S CHOOL IS BACK on January 22. The new year brings a new independent school to Maleny and plans for a Steiner School in the Mary Valley, but did you know Montville offered an alternative to public schooling 85 years ago? It was called the Home School. This ad appeared in the Nambour Chronicle on 15 April 1932, p 6.

Home School for Children, Montville, Queensland. Advisory and Visiting Committee: Mrs. H. O. DICK, A.T.N.A (formerly Matron Kilcoy Hospital). Mrs. R. N. ROSS, B.Sc. (London). Mrs. J. L. MILLETT, B.A. (Syd.). A Day and Boarding School for Children between the ages of 5-14 years. Thorough Tuition in all Kindergarten and Primary subjects, Languages, and Music by Qualified Mistresses. Good home environment and every care taken of children. No dormitories. Full Particulars and Prospectus from the Principal. Pupils enrolled at any time during term at proportionate fees. Mrs. J. L. BEATTIE, (Formerly of London and Scotland) 'Phone: "MANJALDA," Montville 93. MONTVILLE. An article on the same page elaborates that schoolwork will include, in addition to the ordinary subjects, handwork, singing, and games, nature study, drawing, and needlework. These enterprising women were also active in the Montville Community as members of the CWA and the

Methodist Church (Mrs Millett was Superintendent of the Montville Sunday School) in the years of the depression leading up to War World Two, and at a time when it was more customary for their menfolk to feature in the news, as board members or decision makers for the Maroochy Shire Council or the Fruit Growers Association. Their names are recorded in the local Nambour Chronicle for regularly raising funds for the Montville Hall (building a crockery cupboard and equipping it). They organised dances and concerts, played and sang solos and duets and won events such as “the best dressed clothes peg” – undoubtedly, they would have had much to offer their pupils at the Montville Home School. Cate Patterson from the Montville History Group (montvillehistory.org.au/) Historical Note: Queensland has a long history of churches stepping in to fill gaps in educational opportunities but this venture is remarkable because it was established in a small farming community (Montville) by women who were highly qualified at a time when few women entered university. aiden wins citizenship award

Wor. Bro. John Watson, Master of Montville Masonic Lodge and winner of the Lodge Harry Butt Citizenship Award, Aiden Graham

A

IDEN GRAHAM was recently presented with the Montville Masonic Lodge Harry Butt Citizenship Award. Lodge Master, Wor.Bro. John Watson referred to the 100 year association of the lodge with the school at the presentation. One of the petitioners to form a Masonic Lodge in 1917 was the school headmaster, Arthur Suthers, who became secretary when the lodge was created in March 1918. Another foundation member was orchardist George Butt. His grandson, Harry, became a stalwart of the lodge and, in 1987, played a significant part in establishing the citizenship award for a graduating school student. Sadly, Harry passed away before the first award was presented, and it was decided to honour him by naming the Award. On behalf of the Lodge Bro, Watson congratulated Aiden and wished him well in his future endeavours.

To a healthy new year

L

IKE WENDy SAyS, we have come a long way as a society - legislation of same-sex marriage is testament to that. For 2018, what do you hope to aspire to? I will smile more often and hurry less, thank you Marisa. We have put in a screen rules in our family - I thought this article from WA may be useful to others. And I am practising what I preach, and scheduling some routine checkups and appointments so in my good health I can support that of my family…

Delivering best practice:

Mapleton Medical Centre

W

HEN yOu WALK along the little main street at Mapleton, it certainly has that ‘village’ feel, with some unique shops, a bakery, popular cafés and the well-established Mapleton Medical Centre. For almost 40 years patients have been cared for by a team of welcoming professionals, something the Centre prides itself on. Opened in 1981 by business partners, Dr Ian Matthews and Dr Danny Cocks, it has recently been sold to Prime Medical Group. Practice Manager, Elizabeth Gablonski, who has been with the Centre for nine years, says, “We still offer the same excellent service as always, and Dr Cocks and Dr Matthews are still on board to continue looking after their loyal patients. “Jaswinder Singh Brar is our new Director and Business Manager, and will bring fresh ideas to make Mapleton Medical Centre even better for our patients.” Doctor Tasneem Sultana has recently joined the team. Within a short time, she has settled in and is receiving admiration from the practice team and patients. “We are proud of the services we offer this community,”

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You

Unity and Diversity

V

MAPLETON ~ MONTVILLE LE E ~ MALENY M ALENY A EN Y ~ IMBIL IM MB L

EDIC KNOWLEDGE recognises the differences in the material world while Wendy Rosenfeldt looking at it from the perspective of unity. Everyone is different and as collective consciousness rises so does the respect for diversity. We have come a long way from when left handed students were forced to write with their right hands and the only acceptable marriage was between two heterosexual people from the same race, class and religion. In schools educators are accepting that students learn in different ways and that people are wired to experience the world differently. When difference is accepted as just being part of life rather than wrong, diversity is allowed to blossom and the individual is allowed to be him or herself. The Ayurvedic theory of doshas gives understanding of individuality while identifying patterns of nature that help us to live in a balanced way. Light, changeable Vata types will never have the organising ability and attention to detail that Pitta natured people display. However they have the enthusiasm, creativity and flexibility that is an essential part of many careers. Steady, earthy Kapha may try all the diets in the world but they will never have the willowy build of a Vata predominant. Instead bemoaning their body type Kaphas can embrace their sturdy physiology and enjoy their natural capacity for endurance. Vedic astrology also gives insight into our strengths and potentials. A reading can help provide information about what is going to be supported in your life. Insight into our work inclinations can help head us in the right direction rather than feeling obliged to go to university or run the family business just because that is what is expected of us. Vedic

astrology also gives knowledge of the influence of the planets at different times. When Saturn is strongly influencing your horoscope, working hard and being careful can allow you to dodge some of the malefic influence and make use of the time for inner growth. Having your chart done is like having a map for your life. It is much easier to stay on track and arrive at your destination when you know where you are going and are forewarned of possible delays or obstacles. All aspects of Vedic knowledge are coming from looking at the parts in relation to the whole. In Ayurveda, if someone comes for a consultation for a food intolerance, taking the pulse allows the consultant to connect with the total physiology of the individual. So instead of just assuming that the food needs to be cut out, pulse reading helps to identify the cause of the problem. Maybe it is because the digestive system needs strengthening and maybe the digestion is upset by an emotional issue. Ayurveda is able to get to the root cause of the problem and therefore treat it on that level. Regularly experiencing the unity of life through the practice of Transcendental Meditation keeps the knowledge lively. It is intuited or cognised rather than something learnt from a book. Vedic knowledge helps the individual to connect to themselves at a deeper level and then living life becomes more spontaneous and in accord with the rest of the universe. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

Because we understand...

B

ECAuSE WE uNDERSTAND that what we eat either nourishes or creates chaos within our magnificently designed chemistry, we chose foods that replenish and repair our body. Because we understand that our body needs pure water free from chemicals so that it can flush out what is not needed or what could do us harm, we take care to remember to drink pure water often throughout the day. Because we understand that much of what we do and think is influenced by what we have consciously and unconsciously stored in our subconscious programs, we practice awareness of what we read and watch on T.V. Because we understand that our body needs to move, so that it stays flexible and so that our circulation can do the work of cleansing and also nourishing our cells and organs with what is needed to keep us energised and healthy, we balance out resting and exercising. Because we realize what an amazing gift relationship and friendships are, we nurture and show our appreciation for those who share our lives. Because we notice how great we feel when we are happy

and doing what we love, we listen to the guidance of our heart as it inspires us to stay true to our individual calling. Because on some level, even if not all the time, we know that we are connected to some great mystery that beats each heart and unfolds each mighty tree from a tiny seed, we take time to ponder life’s secrets and our relationship to all that is, and because we know that we are influenced by words, we balance our internal dialogue with words that are like medicine to our body, mind and soul. For example, “My internal dialogue springs from a deep Spiritual wisdom that inspires and guides me to make wise and loving choices both for myself and for those around me.” “Today I will anchor myself to peaceful loving thoughts, I will smile more often and hurry less, I will make time to experience inner peace and I will remember that there is a Divine plan for my life, I am not alone, I am part of something wonderful and powerful” Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. Are you finding it hard to control screen

E

XCESSIVE SCREEN TIME is a significant detriment to children’s health, and has been linked to lower physical activity rates, and higher rates of depression and diabetes, consumption of unhealthy foods, lower cardiovascular fitness, lower academic achievement and reductions in time spent with family (see research information below). While the correlation between excessive screen and reduced health is broadly understood in the community, modern families continue to struggle with effectively managing screen time. The predominant advice provided for parents on screen-time is, at its heart, prohibitionist – ‘just say no to technology”. This approach has not worked and device ownership and screen use rates continue to rise among children. Modern children have grown up in a technological age and asking them to abstain from using that technology is tantamount to asking them to opt out of the culture they were born into, of which they are a part. This is, we believe, an unrealistic, if not unfair, request. At Nature Play WA we believe families will benefit from more balanced advice than the “just say no” norm. Our approach begins from these core- premises: Some level of screen time is a given for modern children, and it is not going away; “Just say no to technology” is an ineffective call to action; screen time is not, in itself, dangerous/negative.

time

with your kids?

The primary dangers of screen time are that it can lead to excessive sedentary (sitting) time and the displacement of positive behaviors/opportunities. Technology however can be an ally for health, and we understand parents are looking for practical advice. The advice we propose has three strategies: REDuCE, REPLACE and BALANCE.

REDuCE - Work with your kids to reduce screen time (yours and theirs). Even a little bit helps. Set screen rules, designate non-screen time, avoid having screens in bedrooms and parents should model screen discipline. REPLACE - Find technologies that are fun and active to replace sedentary technologies. Examples: APPS, Nature Passport (mobile app Apple, Android), Pokemon Go (Mobile app: Apple and Android), Geocaching (Mobile app: Apple and Android). Also video games such as Wii fit u (Wii u), Just Dance (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii u, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii), and Shape up (Xbox One). BALANCE - Balance sedentary screen time with equal or greater green time (active, and or, imaginative outdoor play). If your kid loves Minecraft, that’s OK, but the more you let them play computer games, the more time you’ll need to find to balance the ledger with outdoor play. Examples: Playing with friends at the park, sports, throwing or kicking a ball with a parent, dance, walking the dog or making cubbies in the backyard.

Sale Month It’s that time of the year. Maybe you have visitors – or maybe you are just looking for something interesting to do??? HEALTHY HOMEWARES is the complete shopping excursion. It starts with ample parking. Just follow the P sign on the side of the building. Then take the elevator to the garden centre/ florist on the first floor – or, to the homewares centre/café on the second floor.

Here’s what our customers have been saying… “This shop was highly recommended to me as somewhere with a high level of integrity and it does not disappoint” “Amazing business! Plenty of locally made gifts and homewares. I shop here regularly and recommend it to everyone. Really helpful staff and beautiful cafe” “You have done such an amazing job, the fact that we now have a place to buy homewares with a conscience” Healthy Homewares is an adventure… There is nothing else like it in Australia – because, we built it for you…

Allow yourself a couple of hours as there are uniquely fascinating items wherever you look. …And, because of this issue of Hinterland Times, we’re keeping our New Year’s sale running throughout January.
