There’s nothing quite like a good book…
I
F yOU ASK ANy members of my book club about July 14-16 - the word everyone uses is excited. A weekend of cuisine and conversation, wine, words and likeminded souls! As soon as HT is to print, i'll be devouring the rest of Hinterland by Steven Lang. i insisted there are no spoilers in his interview, so if you haven't read it yet... LaRose by Louise Erdrich is next. i think that will be my quota, amongst school holiday happenings and before deadline time rolls around again. in the last year, i think Jasper Jones was the only novel loved by our entire group. So seeing it together on the big screen, will be a real treat.

Stargazing is now on every month, and we have a delightful sample of activities to make the most of your few remaining days of the school holidays. And i won't leave my bookish weekend empty handed - i'll smuggle home a copy of Michael Rowbotham's latest release…. and maybe The Birdman's Wife!

NTERNATiONALLy ACCLAiMED crime writer, Michael Robotham, is the special guest at Maleny’s Celebration of Books festival - this year taking place from July 14 to 16. Popular ABC Radio National literary commentator, Kate Evans, will take part in events and lead author discussions throughout the festival. “Now in its sixth year, the festival continues to attract award-winning authors, literary commentators and to showcase work by local authors and artists,” said Claire Booth, a member of the festival’s coordinating team. “Maleny has a well-earned reputation as a town of books. Our festival will celebrate books and writing in all its forms,” she said. An international best-selling author, Michael Robotham’s crime books have been translated into 23 languages and published in 50 countries. He has beaten Stephen King and J.K. Rowling to take home Britain’s coveted Gold Dagger crime-writing award. Michael’s most recent book, The Secrets She Keeps, will be released on July 11 - just days before he appears at the Maleny festival. Kate Evans will lead a lively discussion with Michael at Sunday Morning Talking Writing, starting at 10am on Sunday July 15. Acclaimed Australian author Melissa Ashley, whose debut novel The Birdman’s Wife was recently announced winner of the 2017 Australian Booksellers Association Book of the year, and exciting new author Roanna Gonsalves will join Michael in the panel discussion. Kate Evans will help celebrate the festival’s opening on Friday July 14 when she interviews local award-winning author Steven Lang as his new novel, Hinterland, is launched during the literary event, Outpsoken. The Big Book Club returns on Saturday July 15, when avid readers will gather in the Maleny RSL Hall at 2pm to

“T
HiS iS A SACRED place to us. A place we can go and sit beneath the tree and gather our thoughts and get our bearings. And talk to Dad.” Margaret Woods, oldest of eight children of Florence and Frank Woods, is obviously emotionally attached to the place her father’s family has called home for 100 years. Affectionately known as One Tree Hill, the property which overlooks the Glasshouse Mountains is a much soughtafter place for photographs, proposals, and even the laying of a child’s ashes. “One time, Dad came across a bloke leaning on the fence, gazing at the view. He said: ‘Are you okay mate?’ The man explained that he had to stop as he had seen a photo of this tree, and the mountains, in London.”
Annie and Johnstone Woods moved to Maleny (not long from ireland) in 1917. Two years later they purchased the property. Frank was born in the old Maleny Hospital in 1924, the same year the house was built from timber off the block. in 1965, Frank married Florence, who still lives in the family home. Over the years, the Woods boys (Frank, John and Allen) added other properties to the Woods’ holding — John’s Retreat at Wootha and Fort Lodge (named after the family property in ireland) at Booroobin — where they ran three successful dairy farms. That was until deregulation. “First of November 1999; i remember the date well,” said Margaret. “With deregulation, we had to turn three independent farms into one. i did the last milking at 8.30am in time for the truck to come and ship our herd of 97 to the Booroobin property. it was the saddest day. it was the first time i’d seen Dad cry.” But Frank still loved cows, so he restocked two properties with beef cattle: One Tree Hill, where they turn out the

weaners, and John’s Retreat with breeders. Fort Lodge remains a dairy farm, supplying Maleny Dairies. “it’s run by my brother, Francis, and my daughter Kelly Kay. She milks 200 head twice a day!” said Margaret. But, back to the tree and its magical views. Around 1992, Member for Glasshouse, Bill Newton, asked Frank and Flo if he could bring his daughter’s bridal party onto the paddock to use the Glasshouse Mountains as a backdrop for the photo shoot. Frank was then approached by MAD Photographers, who had a connection with Maleny, asking how much for the use of the paddock. He suggested they make a donation to his favourite charity, The Heart Foundation, who had been good to him during open-heart surgery. “it snowballed from there,” said Florence. “Before we knew it, people were asking from all over the place. i was on the auxiliary of Erowal, and we were raising money for a hydrotherapy pool, so they benefited too.” Every cent donated to One Tree Hill goes to charity. Each year, a considerable amount of money finds its way to various charities such as The Men’s Shed, the Maleny Historical Society, Busy Needles, Maleny Senior Citizens, the Naval Cadets and the Maleny Show Society. Florence explained: “We look at who needs it most in the community, then decide as a family where the money will go”. The tree, identified by Spencer Shaw as a sour cherry (Syzygium corynanthum), is estimated to be between 60 and
100 years old. Spencer took cuttings a year ago and is working to produce some back-up plants. you’d think that people would respect the privilege of being able to enter private property for their celebrations, and while most do, there are some who take advantage. “People must remember that this is a working cattle property,” explained Margaret. “it is their dining table. Anything that people leave behind, like confetti, cigarette butts, even small pieces of plastic, end up in the cows and makes them very ill. “Then there are the people who presume it is public property and they have the right to enter without permission. i get very annoyed at this.” Frank passed away in 2010, in the new Maleny Hospital, surrounded by his extensive family – “He was a wonderful father and grandfather” – and Florence remains in the 100year-old home. This month, she celebrates her 80th birthday, and she would love to share her special day with the community of Maleny.

Flying in the face of convention
From mustering to flying the Queensland Premier to writing poetry, Peter Doyle is a man who doesn’t sit still for long. Add a bicycle, some golf balls and a spot of backpacking and you have the elements for an afternoon of interesting stories, as Gay Liddington found out!

S
CUBA DiViNG FOR golf balls was a means by which Maleny’s Peter Doyle self-funded flying lessons and forged a career in the air. A pro shop paid Peter fifty cents a ball. Married with two children, Peter worked as a linesman with the PMG, now Telecom. However, his dream of flying began in childhood. “When i was about 15 i used to ride my bike out to Cowra Airport and watch the planes. One day i asked a pilot if i could get a ride. He said i had to have a note from my parents. The following weekend i had my first flight in a Tiger Moth.

“it was amazing. The pilot did some aerobatics and asked if i liked it. i just told him to do it again. “After that i used to go out to the airport every weekend to help them refuel and clean.” At that time, Peter believed flying was only for Air Force graduates. Physics was a key subject but not taught at his school. He attempted a correspondence course but to no avail and the idea of flying was shelved for 20 years until the late 70s. “We lived at Brunswick Heads. There was an aero club at Tyagarah near Mullumbimby. it was there i learnt to fly in a Cessna 150. The rate was $16 an hour. That’s when i started diving for golf balls to help pay for lessons. “i secured my private licence, then commercial and went onto multi engine aeroplanes. in 1980, i completed a helicopter conversion course in Sydney. “i advertised for work and was successful with a company in Mt isa. After completing low flying and mustering training i worked all around Cape york. “The stockmen rode out with a mob of coachers which are domesticated cattle. i flew a five-kilometre radius and pushed the wild cattle into the coachers. “The men lay down on their horses. Dogs were held behind. if the wild cattle saw a man on a horse they would bolt. They had to be brought in downwind otherwise they’d pick up the scent of the men. This makes it difficult flying for a helicopter as it takes a lot more power. “The conditions were rough but it was exciting. We often slept in swags on the ground. it felt like we were in the pioneering, pack-horse days.” After a season of mustering Peter took up a position with City and Country Helicopters in Caloundra. He trained as an instructor. This role led him to teach the then Premier of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Petersen. “it was 1981 when the government bought its first rescue helicopter, a Squirrel. Joh and his personal pilot Beryl young were assigned to me for lessons. “Joh was easy to get along with. He mentioned that his security guard said he should ask me about my politics. i told Joh it was a good thing he didn’t ask.” in 1982, Peter and family moved to Sydney where he took up a position as Chief Flying instructor (CFi). Torres Strait Rescue chopper. Peter He also did relief work with a ‘down the wire’ crew person
Peter at the controls of a Jet Ranger - 1980
Pilot, poet, world traveller, Peter Doyle now faces the unknown. Perhaps this next statement is a metaphor and a message. “i’ve had five total engine failures in helicopters but i’ve always been in the right place at the right time. A lot of people think that if a helicopter has an engine failure it’s all over…but it’s not.”
for Channel 7 News flying a journalist and cameraman to the scene. Sunny Queensland enticed Peter back to Caloundra. The CFi travelled Australia with engineers to service helicopters and facilitate check rides with pilots. He also went to the US and completed a safety course on Robinson Helicopters. Contract work including flying tours in New Guinea, and Brisbane’s World Expo ’88 kept this career pilot in the air. “After Expo, i started my own business, a training school in Caloundra. At the same time, i was a lifesaver and broke my leg in an iRB (Rubber Ducky). That put me in plaster for five months. "That’s when overdrafts went up to 21% interest. i had an overdraft on the chopper but we survived. Then i hired my helicopter out to a company for mustering. “i was doing relief work for Channel 7 News in Brisbane. While i was there, i decided to sell the chopper. When they were bringing it back, the pilot hit a power line between Longreach and Emerald and wrote it off. He was okay but a court case followed. “We moved to Maleny from Kings Beach in 1994. i loved the greenery, the energy, and lots of weirdos like me… people who think outside the square.” One of Peter Doyle’s interests is writing poetry. One that put a smile on my face was ‘it is Strange on the Range’. The second verse reads: Had we contact with the universal force Or in reality, had we gone off course? There were healers and dealers of all types And lots of new age look-alikes. Three years after moving to the range Peter and his wife June decided to traverse the globe and went backpacking for several months. Southern ireland and wild parts of New Mexico were standouts for Pete. Contract work until 2005 led Peter to the Torres Straits for a couple of years then back as CFi with Chopperline, Caloundra until he retired last year.

Hinterland Blues blows away the cobwebs
The Hinterland is peppered with sports clubs that nurture talent, encourage friendships and engage the community, but you need committed volunteers to run, sustain and improve them. Bruce Bell, coach and junior football president of the Hinterland Blues AFC, is one such volunteer – and he’s on a mission for his own ‘Battlestar Gallactica’.
by Dale Jacobsen

RUCE’S FATHER WAS in the Air Force, so he grew up “moving all over the place and playing every kind of football”, but he enjoyed Australian Football the most – as do his children. “My daughter fluctuates between dance and football, and my son joined Auskick as soon as he was able to play. Then when my step-daughter started to play her team had no coach, so i helped out.” Bruce laughs, “Once you volunteer to be a coach or on the committee, you get ‘your sentence’ while your kids go through it! i think i have another ten years or so of Junior Football.” Jokes aside, he is clearly passionate about improving the club, as the numbers were in decline when he came on board. “People were driving past us to Maroochydore, because it’s bigger, but one of our Under 16s is in Sydney playing in the national championships, and we have a number of other representative players at the club too – so you don’t have to be in a big club to be noticed.” Bruce decided it was time to rebrand and shift the

mindset. “Legally we are still the ‘Nambour and Hinterland AFC’, but it didn’t make sense to me. We are based in Palmwoods and we are like the Battlestar Gallactica of clubs – we have kids from Coolum, Bribie, Woombye, Kureelpa … “We needed to create a bigger footprint for recruitment and sponsorship that reflected our demographic. So we changed the name to the Hinterland Blues, but kept the colours and the club song. “i think it has swept a bit of a broom, culturally, around the place and now we are getting back on an even keel, which is really exciting.” This year, the Hinterland Blues were fortunate that their Under 8s and Under 10s went to the Gabba and represented the Lions, playing on the Gabba during half time. “The whole experience for them was very exciting; meeting the players, going under the Gabba into the changing rooms, having photos and autographs. “i talked to a number of our coaches about it. i remember doing that as a kid in Melbourne. They are lasting memories.” The teams are building up now, since the rebrand. “We are the only club on the Sunshine Coast with a team in every age

group and competition,” Bruce says proudly. “And we have our first Open Age Women’s team, which ages varying from 17 to 53.” Amongst the girls the camaraderie is excellent and they are going from strength to strength. “There are actually more girls than boys in the Under 8’s team at the moment, and Shannon Campbell, who was one of our juniors, now plays for the Brisbane Lions Women’s Team.” Bruce believes the reality of any sporting club is that you need to run it as a business. “We receive a $6k grant from Council for the whole facility, but just to get dangerous areas resurfaced before the season costs $4k, so sponsorship is vital.” Local businesses are keen to sponsor the club: Channel

Nine, Totally Workwear, the Mooloolaba Hotel, and Elders Palmwoods Real Estate are all on board. “And the Woombye SPAR have sausage sizzles for us – they supply everything and we make the profit.” Above all though, this is about community. “We are not a ‘win at all costs’ club – we encourage participation, getting out there and learning the game, but this is also about making solid friendships, supporting each other through the game and in life.” A previous club president passed away from cancer, and now the club holds an annual fundraiser where they play in specially-made pink jerseys, which are then auctioned for a cancer charity. Other activities include a group of mums running a camp on the grounds, as something a bit different and fun for the kids; the Under 14s are going to the Big Bounce and the Gabba for a weekend. “We are hosting the end-of-year Carnival for the Under 8 and Under 10 teams of the Coast in August – there will be about 1200 people coming along!” Bruce says. These local clubs can clearly have a lasting a positive impact, with lifetime friendships forged and mentors cherished. “i have footy mates i haven’t seen in ten years, but when we talk or meet up it’s like yesterday,” Bruce shares. “At my grandfather’s funeral, he was in his 90s, this man turned up, in his 70s. My dad had coached him in soccer at seven years old. He’d seen the notice in the paper and wanted to come and pay his respects.” The clubs can also help steer kids to a better path. Bruce recalls one boy who had moved to the area after leaving a negative home environment. He had lost interest in many things, including school, but he joined the club. “One day, a member of his local family came up and said, ‘you have no idea the impact this club has had’. This boy has a new lease of life and is turning things around at school again. “With three kids, work and training, life is fairly frantic. Some days i think, ‘why am i doing this again?’ and it is moments like that, that remind me.” The Hinterland Blues welcome new players throughout the season, to find out more visit Hinterland Blues AFC on Facebook or call President of Junior Football: Bruce Bell 0438 485 487.

When writing for HT, Jess McKenzie described a “beautiful and fascinating couple” who three years ago, packed up their lives into a small car and went searching for a more sustainable way of life. Now in their Crystal Waters home, HT's Gay Liddington caught up with Kentaro and Rovielle Yamaki and was immersed in stories of cultural differences and a search for fulfillment.
ORMATiVE yEARS SPENT in Germany created identity confusion for Japanese-born Kentaro. “We moved to Germany in 1982 when i was two years old. My father was a diplomat. Even though we spoke Japanese at home, German was my first language. “When i was nine we went back to Japan. it was like a reverse culture shock.” The cultural challenge confronted Kentaro in his teenage years. While he acknowledged his Japanese heritage, he didn’t come to terms with it until he went to university and studied sociology. Desiring to separate from materialism, Kentaro felt drawn
to india. it represented a place of ‘spirituality’. He spent nine months backpacking through SE Asia and india. “i came from Japan with lots of money and could act like a king, yet there were these people who lived simply with much less income but look happier. i questioned myself. “The other side is poverty and pollution. in a way, it’s what the First World has created and it is trickling down. it’s all connected - the society and the system we’ve built. “it opened my eyes to a raw world. i thought i could find answers on this journey but the quest just got deeper. i had to go back to Japan and come to terms with it to liberate myself. “i joined an NGO called Peace Boat. it was a dream job
working globally for human rights and environmental issues.” Post Peace Boat, Kentaro worked as a freelance interpreter in Germany then Australia. Melbourne became home. it’s where he met Rovielle whose journey had, in some ways, paralleled that of Kentaro’s. At the age of nine, due to her father’s occupation, Filipina born Rovielle moved from Brunei to Australia. it was those cultural shifts that created a bond for the couple. “My brother and i lived for a time with relatives on a dairy farm in Victoria. My introduction to Aussie living was fresh milk with cream on top. “i grew up in Melbourne and studied early childhood education. After graduation, i worked as a teacher in Japan for four years. “in 2010, nine months after my return, i met Kentaro. We each had registered on the Couchsurfing website. i was looking for a Japanese friend so i could brush up on the language. We met for coffee,” said Rovielle. Kentaro adds: “We clicked instantly and married three years later. We had a comfortable life but felt something was missing.” At that time, Rovielle was employed as a teacher. Nature studies included a hatchery and someone had to look after the chickens. Bringing home those chicks impacted their lives in ways unimagined. “We began going to sustainable festivals. Then we visited Permablitz: people who want to renovate their yard using permaculture principles. “At school, i asked the kids where a carrot came from and only two kids knew. i thought, i can’t be a teacher if i can’t teach them where food comes from. “i became Director of the Early Learning Centre and took the opportunity to build gardens. That’s when my passion for growing food and teaching kids about it really started,” she said. Motivated by a stay at a Thai organic farm, they quit their Melbourne jobs in 2014 and excitedly enrolled in a twoweek Permaculture Design Course at Crystal Waters. Kentaro eagerly shares: “it was eye opening and a lot to take in for us city kids: how to live with the land, water, house design, gardens, how nature works…an amazing time. “i felt there was a concrete, practical way that i could influence the world positively. A sustainable community where people communicate and collaborate.” Rovielle continues: “We had no plans, the car was our home and we lived in a tent. We decided to try WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms). it was offered at Crystal Waters. “We learnt to care for bees, harvest honey, look after the cows and gardens. We picked ticks and leeches off our bodies, saw pythons for the first time and big spiders on the back of toilet doors. “After two months, we travelled to SE Asia then returned to Crystal Waters. We moved around as WWOOFers within
the community for another two years. Locals became friends and we continued to learn.” They accepted an offer to house-sit for a year and turned their thoughts to making a living. A restauranteur friend visiting from Melbourne suggested they open a sushi shop. “The idea of Rovielle and i making food our business was something convincing to me. We could connect garden and palette. “Prior to opening the shop, our friend invited us to train under the chef at his restaurant,” said Kentaro. Connecting food and Japanese culture, ‘Soul about Sushi’ is at Maleny’s Artisan Food Market each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Kentaro offers a tempting variety of Japanese cuisine and sushi rolls, including vegan and vegetarian options. in January of this year Cocomi Elle was born: “We feel really content with our beautiful baby and way of living. “initially, i started from the bigger picture trying to change things but in time came to realise that real change starts with where you are and from the heart.”

AN ACCIDENT IN YOUR HOME – OCCUPIER’S LIABILITY An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured. The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase. You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be sufficient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger – not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger. What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned. Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.
Starry, starry night There is something inspiring and grounding about stargazing - seeing tiny planets zoom into magnificent view through a telescope; reminding us how small we are. Writer Dale Jacobsen recently joined Dr Ken Wishaw on a monthly stargazing evening in Maleny, and discovered how just perfect our location is for viewing the universe.

VERyONE HAS THEiR favourite planet; mine is Jupiter. Last night i viewed it through a telescope. i can’t tell you what a thrill it was to see, not a picture, but the real thing. The tiny dot above my head came alive with four moons and cloud bands. it gave me a peak into the world that so enthuses Dr Ken Wishaw. He is undertaking post-graduate work in Astronomy at the University of Southern Queensland, looking at the causes of urban light pollution. “i needed to retire as a medical practitioner a couple of years ago and was looking for something that would combine my interest in the environment with my hobby,” explained Ken. “i have been fascinated by the universe since my uncle showed me Saturn when i was eight. My father bought my first telescope when i was at high school.”

Standing beneath a dazzling display of stars on a moonless night in Maleny, it was difficult to believe that 80% of the world’s population can barely see the stars. “i was camping in the Grand Canyon in Arizona a few years back,” said Ken, “when a woman started crying. She said it was the first time in her life she had seen stars, so i gave a talk to the people gathered around, explaining the different features.” Ken is very keen to see urban light pollution become a thing of the past. The Sunshine Coast Council has an urban lighting master plan that, after his research review at USQ, Ken believes is the most advanced in the world. They are looking at replacing all street lights with LEDs. This would halve the power bill and greatly reduce light pollution. it is possible that, within five years, 99% of all Australian street lighting will be LED. As a member of the Brisbane Astronomical Society, Ken has begun holding monthly Stargazing evenings in Maleny. He was assisted by Councillor Jenny McKay and the council to carefully assess 13 sites between Maleny and Eumundi. “The best site was Howell’s Knob, but it wasn’t suitable because of the narrow access road,” said Ken. “The secondbest site was right at the Maleny Golf Course. it’s not quite as

good as out at Uluru, but it would be 90% as good.” it seems that Astro Tourism is a booming industry. in New Zealand, up to 70,000 visitors a year come from those countries that cannot see stars, mostly Asian countries. “i climbed a hill at Lake Tekapo in New Zealand one night when it was minus 10˚C, and there were five busloads of tourists looking at the stars,” said Ken. Ken’s telescope (there are usually two or three at a viewing night) is a large 14-inch reflector which is fully computerised. “i need to feed in my exact location, do a two-star reference, then the computer will guide the telescope to whichever feature i tell it.” After i had my fill of watching Jupiter, Ken turned the scope to Saturn. i still see the image of the super bright planet with its rings. One of the people with us, four-year-old Elysia Collins, looked into the eyepiece and excitedly identified her favourite planet. Her mother, Caroline Ellis, said that this year Elysia discovered stars and can’t get enough. i was amazed at how much this little girl knows of our universe. it goes without saying that these Stargazing nights are open to all ages, whether or not people belong to the Brisbane Astronomical Society. “We welcome everyone,” said Ken. “People are invited to bring along their own telescopes if they wish; although we ask that, if they need help setting them up, they arrive well before sunset so we can assist them.” Two other keen astronomers regularly assist. Richard Sharwood specialises in taking photos of the night sky through his own telescope that is calibrated to compensate for the rotation of the earth. Sean Hammond made his own telescope, with a whopping 18-inch diameter mirror. “He made it from the glass of an old coffee table,” laughed Ken. “He ground it to greater than 1/1000 inch accuracy,

before it was coated with aluminium. in astronomy, size does matter. it is a superb scope.” i saw and learnt so much from Ken in just an hour’s viewing. For example, as we watched the sun set, he turned to the east and explained that the dark blue band just above the horizon is the shadow of the earth cast out into space. Using a laser beam after dark, he explained in detail how to use the Southern Cross and its pointers to determine the position of the South Celestial Pole. Ken’s dream is to establish Maleny as a hub of Sunshine Coast Astro Tourism, to erect an open air planetarium. “We have the plans, and hopefully can site it near the Golf Club,” said Ken. Outspoken event leads Maleny’s Celebration of Books weekend HE TOWN OF WiNDERRAN has changed. The picturesque dairy district has become a tourist destination. The old farming families have had to make room for the tree-changers, retirees and wealthy developers who’ve come to live on the Range. Now a controversial dam project’s been announced and the community is fragmenting along unpredictable lines. Local residents Eugenie and Guy find themselves on opposite sides of the debate, while Nick, the new locum at a medical practice, gets caught up in events that suggest there are more sinister forces at work. As the arguments for and against the dam intensify, it becomes ever more personal for the protagonists; traditional loyalties and values are stretched to breaking point. Does it sound familiar? Prior to the OUTSPOKEN opening to Maleny's Celebration of Books, HT's Michelle Gilmore talks to Maleny author, Steven Lang about his new book, Hinterland.
T
Guy said, "He wrote about everything. His life and everyone he met had no function other than to be transformed into story." (P126) Is that true of you too,
Steven? Do you find characters in the locals around you, that you are compelled to put on paper? This really isn’t me so much as an idea of a writer. i’ve been in Australia for forty-seven years and for nearly all of that time (bar a few years here and there in Sydney) i’ve lived in and around country towns. What i’ve noticed about them is the way that people tend to fragment into social groupings with, often, little communication between them. i’ve also seen how when an issue arises in the town this fragmentation becomes a fracturing, tensions and emotions very quickly rise. This isn’t, of course, confined to country towns, it happens everywhere, but in smaller communities it’s more obvious, it’s heightened; in an urban situation you don’t have to see the people you’re maligning behind their backs in the main street, you don’t have to deal with them on a personal level. i think in a peaceful country like Australia, where the rule of law holds, this isn’t so important because things don’t get out of control, but there’s still a cost, personally and to the community, in allowing ourselves to take sides. i wanted to explore what those costs are. in Hinterland i’ve tried to create a fictional community
Hinterland is Steven Lang's third novel - a story of “of love, loyalty, environmental concern, politics and the slippery notion of progress”
populated by fictional people as a way of talking about the way we live. i have, very deliberately, not based my characters on people i know. i’ve set the town of Winderran in a similar location to the town where i live because it’s a place i’ve come to know over the last thirty years, not because i want to make some comment about Maleny or any individuals who live there, but because i find that the history of places are important, how the landscape came to be the way it is matters.

www.celebrationofbooksmaleny.com development – you name it – it’s just the state of play in the country at the moment. in that respect the fight about the dam in Hinterland is just the issue which has caused division in the town. it’s central to the plot of the novel because it’s divisive, not because it’s a dam, if that makes any sense. Why did i choose to make it a dam? Well, i guess that was, once again, because it’s something i know a little bit about. i wrote several articles against Traveston, i thought it was a very stupid idea to build a dam there, so i had all those objections at my fingertips, but i also had all the reasons others thought it was a good idea. The Alterbar - is there somewhere on the Range that reminds you of it?
Maleny's Steven Lang is the author of two novels, An Accidental Terrorist, which won Premiers’ Literary Awards in both Queensland and New South Wales, and 88 Lines about 44 Women, which was shortlisted for both the Christina Stead and the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards for Fiction
We aren’t very good, as a species, at seeing the larger picture, we see things and we think they must have always been like they are now. Given your background with Green Hills, are professions all you may have in common with Guy? Or do you align yourself or hear your voice with another character? i think that in one way or another i’m in all the characters – it’s one of the pitfalls of being an author, you try and create characters who are not yourself, but inevitably you have to project feelings and experiences onto them and they are, by definition, yours. With Guy i created someone as unlike myself as i could imagine but gave him the same profession as myself as a way of finding my way into him, of being sympathetic to his concerns.

He’s a very disappointed man. He used to be relevant, even important, and as the decades have passed he’s become more and more sidelined. When the dam provides an opportunity to boost his position in the larger society he grasps it with both hands even though i suspect, deep down, he doesn’t believe in it. in terms of the characters from the novel that i align with i have a deep affinity with Eugenie. She was the hardest character to write but the more i worked on her the more i related to her.

Is the Dam story inspired by the Traveston/Mary River dam fight? Or Boreen Pocket? i think it would be fair to say that there isn’t a country town anywhere in Australia that isn’t engaged in some sort of environmental battle, be it against coal seam gas, mining, logging, destruction of wetlands, supermarkets, tourist

Well, clearly there have been a couple of venues like that up here on the Range. From the perspective of a writer i liked that it was in an old church, this re-purposing of a building for another use, because i thought it in some way encapsulated the changes in the district, the clearing of the rainforest which Miles talks about in the first chapter, that was done at such great personal expense, only to have the land replanted a hundred years later by all these tree changers with their Mediterranean focaccias and espresso macchiatos and their sense of an environment that doesn’t include people.
LaROSE THIS YEAR’S CHOICE FOR THE BIG BOOK CLUB Facilitated by Kate Evans (ABC Radio), Dr Clare Archer-Lean (USC) and organisational psychologist Sue Collaro in this literary masterwork, Louise Erdrich wields her breathtaking narrative magic in an emotionally haunting contemporary tale of a tragic accident, a demand for justice, and a profound act of atonement with ancient roots in Native American culture.

Michael will be taking part in the panel discussion alongside other leading Australian authors. The latest psychological thriller from Michael Robothom is here, with its brilliant rendering of the secrets some women hold close and a shocking act that cannot be undone, The Secrets She Keeps delivers a dark and twisted page-turner that is absolutely impossible to put down.
inspired by a letter found tucked inside her famous husband’s papers, The Birdman’s Wife imagines the fascinating inner life of Elizabeth Gould, who was so much more than just the woman behind the man. The Birdman’s Wife paints an indelible portrait of an extraordinary woman overlooked by history, until now.

Happy outcome to weathering the storm
AyS AFTER THE LAST HT was out - Mal Sommerville's prayers were answered. you may remember his request for the community to continue recording Maleny's weather. Within days he met up with Maleny resident, Alan Still, who had just finished designing a new weather website for Maleny. Said Mal, "The article was very successful. Alan has a very sophisticated weather station, and he has placed, among other historical things we are going to put there, an extra large sheet on our site "He's a whizz kid with the computers - i'm virtually the compiler, and a friend of Alan's, Dr David Johns, draws the graphs. "Every second person has commented on the article too - everybody was very supportive," said Mal. "The main thing it was so quick; now we going to have a weather station up and running." The long-standing Maleny Weather Station was operated for many years by Patrick Stacey, and was no longer operational when Pat passed away last year. Mal was hoping to carry on Pat's work. Said Mal, "it took me 25 years to compile the rainfall - it will be a lot easier this time!”
Maleny has a new weather station thanks to statistician Dr David Johns, historical data collector, Malcolm Somerville and Alan Still, the designer, owner and webmaster of malenywx.com
"We have all Pat Stacey’s diaries - dozens and dozens of them," said Alan. “The plan is to add Pat's records over time.” Alan previously ran a weather station at Elimbah for more than five years prior to moving to Maleny in 2015. He hopes the new website will provide our community with up-to-date information. "i consider it to be a modern weather website. The homepage is very comprehensive with interactive graphs, downloadable data and expandable maps. "The data comes from not only my personal weather station, but also includes forecasts from BoM, a weather radar, lightning map, current Qld weather warnings and, for those who like something different, interactive air traffic, radar traffic and marine traffic. “i am currently working on a mobile/tablet version of the site.” Well, we are pleased that HT has brought together a like-minded trio, and made Mal happy, "The idea is to share as much as we can you can tell Dale she's done a terrific job!" Check out the new site at: http://www.malenywx.com To find out more call Alan on: 0438 114 132.

S MANy OF yOU may know, the Chicks in the Sticks Christmas-in-July high tea is happening on Sunday, July 16 at 1pm, and will be hosted by Lloyd and Barb Campbell at yabbaloumba Retreat near Kenilworth. Chicks in the Sticks are lucky to have the support of the Kenilworth Quilt and Craft Circle in a bid to raise funds for breast cancer research. Circle members have handmade a gorgeous quilt to be raffled. Liz Corbett informs us however, that the event has now sold out of tickets! “Good for us and the Queensland Cancer Fund, but not those who left it too late to buy. “There will be a pink flavour but we are focusing on Christmas, everything from Father Christmas, to decorations, to the menu. Last year more than $7,500 was donated to the Queensland Cancer Fund for breast cancer research, and donations are very welcome again this year, even if you may have missed tickets for the event itself. To find out more call Kelli on 5446 0155.
ANGECARE (formerly the Blackall Range Care Group) has been overwhelmed by a very generous donation from the Lions Club, in the amount of $3,571.13! The donation has two parts; the first being Peter Jensen’s Gardening on the Edge open garden, where the Lions Club ran a fundraising stall selling morning teas, light lunches and afternoon teas to visitors. They also sold preserves, cakes, and biscuits provided by RangeCare’s kitchen. There were more than 800 visitors to Peter’s garden that weekend, and the fundraising stall raised $1,571.13, which was donated to RangeCare. The Lion’s club then donated an additional $2,000 as part of its annual distribution of funds. They hope that RangeCare will use the funds to “assist with the provision of services to the most needy of its clients”. RangeCare CEO, Jenny McCafferty, said, “During a time of significant change in the way that care organisations are funded, this support from the Lions Club has been very much appreciated and will help us continue to meet the needs of our clients and the community.”

HEN THE MALENy Neighbourhood Centre realised that a sit-down gala night might exclude some artists who had submitted works, they decided to change the model for their upcoming fundraising event. The night is open to everyone: families, art enthusiasts, supporters of the Centre, with tickets priced at $25/adults with kids $10. Arts Director for the Obi Arts Prize, Lynda Simpson said, “We have worked hard to keep the entertainment value high and not change the program, which builds to the final announcement of the winner of the Obi Art Prize that iGA in Maleny have sponsored. “Wild Foods will be doing wonderful canapés and everyone gets a drink on arrival.” The Painted Tie Event launches the Obi Art Prize Exhibition on Sat/Sun 8 and 9 July. Voting closes at 3pm on July 9 with an official closing ceremony at 5pm and the announcement of the $2500 People’s Choice Award winner. Book tickets at www.obiartprize.com or head to the Maleny Community Centre Friday 5.30pm on July 7.

iT WAS AN ALMOST AN UNALLOyED TRiUMPH. Malcolm Turnbull was surging down the straight, clearing every obstacle in his stride, confident of success, when suddenly he baulked at the last hurdle, and instead of jumping it, tip-toed around it, wallet in hand. He fell over the line and went on to celebrate a victory lap, but even his most avid cheerleaders had to admit that he had been forced to compromise. Like Gonski Mark i, Gonski Mark ii had succumbed to a special deal for the loudest common denomination – the Catholics. And it was not even the might of the mother church itself that prevailed – at least, not directly. Turnbull’s doughty Education Minister, Simon Birmingham, had stared down the clerical bureaucrats, and was all but ready to do a deal with the Greens and the Xenophon team to secure the numbers in the senate. This had involved some tricky negotiation, but none of it affected the integrity of the package. A quicker transition to the needs-based ideal was expensive, but obviously desirable. The demand for the states to ante up more of their share of public school funding particularly annoyed the Victorians, whose share will have to rise from 66 per cent to 75 per cent, but a national model is a national model. And the requirement for an independent body to oversee the funding process appears superfluous – isn’t that why we pay the shiny bums of the Commonwealth Education Department? – but will do no lasting harm. At the last minute there was a hiatus: the Stalinists of the NSW branch of the Greens instructed Lee Rhiannon (who did need much instructing) to follow the dictates of the militant Teachers Union and oppose everything forever, but given the other Greens were on side and most of the remaining crossbenchers were responsive, this need not have been a game breaker. However, time was short, so Birmingham went back to the others, including One Nation, which is apparently considered more acceptable to the ideologues of his party room than the Greens. The numbers were just about there, although there was at least one waverer – Jacqui Lambie needed a lot of geeing up. But the real problem was the hardline Catholics in the coalition party room. George Christensen broke ranks last week to support Labor’s demand to retain penalty rates. This didn’t matter because Christensen had made sure that the government would prevail, but it spooked Turnbull in particular: although it is obvious that Christensen’s maverick stance is all bluff – he is no more likely to leave the Nationals than he is to desert his religion, although come to think of it he has already done that – it showed our Prime Minister how vulnerable his hold on power could become. So when the retiring senator, Chris Back, announced that he would conclude his totally undistinguished political career by giving the government a farewell present by voting against it, and his fellow zombie Eric Abetz muttered about doing the same, instant panic set in, followed swiftly by appeasement. $50 million for “transition” arrangements, almost all of which was earmarked for the Catholics. And there is to be another review about how much (more) they should snaffle, a process which may well unhinge Gonski Mark ii just as it did
Gonski Mark i. it should be noted that the Catholics already receive special treatment; unlike the other schools they are granted the privilege of collecting their money as a lump sum and then doling it out to their constituents as they see fit. And this may or may not be according to need: a few weeks ago there were reports that wealthy city colleges were being favoured at the expense of poorer rural parishes. So other independent schools, not to mention public schools, are naturally envious. it would make more sense to bring the Catholics into line than to give them yet more advantages. But no one ever said politics is entirely rational, let alone Bill Shorten and his cynical Labor opposition. Having started by complaining that the government had not matched Labor’s spending target – clearly unfunded, rather like Turnbull’s company tax cuts (but let’s not pursue that), Shorten fell to his knees to become a Catholic crusader. The best that can be said for his opportunism is that it has produced a major dilemma for the ageing groupers of The Australian. They would normally fall reflexively behind any campaign to defend the one true church, but they hate Labor and all its works. in the end they have lapsed into doublethink, blaming Labor for everything while cheering on the massive scare campaign about higher fees, closing schools, and even the ultimate horror – Catholic parents forced to enrol their children in the public schools inhabited by the vast majority of other Australians. Dennis Shanahan appears particularly conflicted. And Turnbull, a convert to his wife’s illustrious Catholic dynasty, has been equally circumspect. After the revelations of the Royal Commission into the trades unions, he has been remorselessly hounding Labor as the puppets of thugs and criminals. After the revelations about the Royal Commission into child abuse, it might have been thought that he would berate Labor as endorsing paedophilia and conspiracy to cover up crime, but then, politics is no more about consistency than it is about reason. But for all that Turnbull’s big week has had its flaws, and the education wars will resume as soon as the major stakeholders catch their breath, a win is a win. Gonski Mark i was the foundation, and Gonski Mark ii is a massive improvement. We now await Gonski Mark iii to find by how much the Catholics are able to further distort the pristine concept, and then Gonski Mark iV, the bygone, when the scheme’s eponymous founder moves on from the funding to try and improve the declining standards within Australian schools. This will be the big one, but perhaps fortunately it is a fair way into the future – perhaps further than the life of the Turnbull government. However, in the meantime Turnbull can chalk up a rare and vitally important win before the winter recess closes in. it came just in time for the longest night of the year; our Prime Minister, if not all his colleagues, will hope that this is a sign that increasing hours of daylight, if not actual sunshine, will follow. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

‘The Church’ frontman paints with ‘RESPECT’ in mind

T
HE MALENy NEiGHBOURHOOD Centre gracefully opens it doors to guest artists like Astrid Dahl and Jandamarra Cadd, with frontman Steve Kilbey from iconic Australian band ‘The Church’ adding his artwork, Australian Madonna, to the 2017 Obi Art Exhibition. The Church, renown for their musical prowess, has an incredible career spanning over 30 years. inducted into the ARiA Hall of Fame in 2010, Steve’s acceptance speech brought great humour to an evening celebrated by industry professionals, as he recollected a 25-year journey in the Australian music industry. Steve’s family moved to Australia from Hertfordshire, England in post-war times when he was three. Getting his first bass guitar at age 16, Steve taught himself to play. After early bands with Peter Koppes, like Precious Little and Baby Grande, he formed in 1980 what would become Australian icons “The Church”. The band who would perform their song Under the Milky Way at the opening of the Commonwealth Games, and in Steve’s words are the “best group in the universe”. The Church is one of the most resilient acts Australia has produced and they still tour extensively with three of the original members, Peter Koppes and Tim Powell, as well as a wonderful new addition, ian Haug (ex-Powderfinger guitarist). Both 2015 and 2016 were extremely successful years with The Church touring the US in combination with Psychedelic Furs and the release of their 25th studio album Further/Deeper.
with references from Steve that he’s constantly dabbling in what he calls “artistic malarkey”. The Obi Art Exhibition will exhibit and offer for sale the Australian Madonna which is a wonderful representation of his constantly evolving unique and gifted style, and follows on from his successful ‘Eclectica’ art exhibition in South Brisbane at the Henderson Gallery earlier this year.
We don't know how he does it, but somehow along with a busy solo career that has seen him appear as guest singer with the Triffids and Friends and on the Leonard Cohen Tour of the Hunter Valley, Steve finds the time to paint wonderful, unique and very Steve Kilbey Artworks.
The Obi Art Exhibition celebrates its opening on Friday, July 7 at 5.30pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s Painted Tie fundraiser event, held at the Maleny Community Centre.
When you search the internet you find a wealth of artworks Steve has produced with many recognised as renowned Church album covers, but also there exists amongst them a wealth of poems, blogs and even a book,
Tickets can be purchased online www.obiartprize.com or at the door (if not sold out). Steve’s artwork will also be on sale during the Exhibition from July 8 and 9, doors open 9am-5pm.

Beautiful paintings which make viewers feel happy BorN in Brisbane in 1968, Nicole grew up in Townsville, North Queensland. She began painting, drawing and writing at a very young age. By the time she turned twelve, she had written and illustrated three fantasy novels, excerpts from which have been published. During her high school years, Nicole won the art prize on numerous occasions. on leaving school, she returned to Brisbane where she studied Graphic Design. She graduated winning the Best Folio award. She spent the next few years working as an illustrator for various advertising agencies. Creating her own fine art style was always her top priority. after her first sell out exhibition at McWhirters art Space, she decided it was time to take the plunge and become a full time professional artist. The Philosophy behind Nicole’s artistic style is simply to create beautiful paintings which make viewers feel happy. She uses very bright colours and lots of detail to depict the things close to her heart including nature and the australian landscape. Nicole is still based in Brisbane, and lives with her son, seven parrots, six chooks, a dog and a miniature pig called Trotsky. from july 1st, Nicole’s paintings will be featured under exhibitions on the gallery website:

HANKS TO MUSIC festivals such as Splendor, Glastonbury or Woodford, the festival wedding vibe is alive and well in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The concept is simple – you create a mini festival with your closest friends and family, there should be lots of music, dancing and laughter. The best festivals are vibrant, colourful and staged in the great outdoors. This means you can get creative with your styling: bunting, party games, paper lanterns and festoon lights will create the perfect festival atmosphere. Commonly the catering is about food that is easy to eat, think food trucks and casual seating such
as hay bales or picnic rugs. A true festival wedding would not be complete without some kind of a tent structure. If you're having a yurt, tipi or a marquee - have fun with your layout and decor, think of it as a blank canvas and get wild and whimsical with your styling and flowers. Ideally, the music should be live. Choose a band or DJ that can provide you with an awesome live set and are up for performing outdoors. And if a little rain is forecast for your big day pack your wellies for a true festival experience. When choosing a venue, look for a place that has adequate space and scope for your celebrations.

Merlin Coughlan, Marriage Celebrant said, "Weddings these days are about creating a celebration that is personal to each couple.” Merlin says where that blends with a destination that is beautiful and peaceful yet not too far from main centres, such as the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, you have a celebration that is special. “Destination weddings are often more than just a single day celebration with couples extending the fun times by organising pre and post-wedding activities.” Many couples are looking for venues where the outdoors merges seamlessly with the indoors. "It may be a marquee wedding set on the top of the Range with spectacular views over rolling hillsides, or a venue with amazing outdoor spaces to use for the ceremony that transform into a relaxing space with
carefully placed sofas and armchairs set in the gardens, where they can enjoy lawn games as they sip champagne and nibble on scrumptious canapés in the prelude to the wedding reception. “As the evening draws in, fairy lights enhance the gardens as they become a chill out zone and beautiful space for evening photos.”

Lyn Wilson and her marvellous miniatures are on show at Maleny Sunday Market, July 16
T iS AS iF THE enchanting street where wizards can buy a wand or get measured up for new robes has been hit with a reduction charm. That magical mall, that must not be named, has been shrunk 48 times and will be on display at the Maleny Art, Craft and Collectables Market at the Maleny RSL Hall on Sunday, July 16, from 8am-2pm. The incredibly detailed miniature display is the creation of Sunshine Coast woman Lyn Wilson, who has been making scale models and petite teddies as Lyn’s Tiny Corner, for more than 30 years. Mrs Wilson said she started with a corner store kit, but quickly got bored and transformed it into a Quidditch shop, inspired by the Harry Potter series. “After i finished Quality Quidditch Supplies, i thought i would try to create a wizard book shop. “Three thousand books later, i knew i was a little nuts, but also completely hooked on creating this wizard alley.” Over the past five years, tiny shops selling wands, robes, toys, clocks, owls and potions have been added to the display. A tiny wizard would be able to read some of the books in Flourish and Blotts Book Shop, and soon will be able to visit their dragon-protected vault under the wizard bank.

Galapagos Duck headline Nambour Winter Jazz Fest
See Galapagos Duck at the Nambour Winter Jazz Fest on July 29
I
NTERNATiONAL ARTiSTS, Galapagos Duck, have performed all over the world and toured around Australia, won national and international awards, and will now be headlining the 2017 Nambour Winter Jazz Fest. The band’s latest lineup includes one of the originals - sax player Willy Qua (who harks back to 1973) - along with bass player/guitarist John Conley, who boasts a mere 35-year association with the band. Then there’s renowned saxophonist Richard Booth (sax, clarinet, flute and steel drum), the exciting drummer Rodney Ford and Wil Sargisson (keys), who was only born after the
original Galapagos Duck had been playing The Basement for 11 years! Reviewer Lloyd Bradford Syke recently wrote in Australian Stage:“The Duck have lost none of their vigour, enthusiasm, dexterity, versatility or skill. in fact, they're probably playing better than ever; which, after 43 years, is saying something!” Held at the C-Square complex, Nambour, on July 29, the Nambour Winter Jazz Fest is expanding this year to include five venues plus free entertainment on the outdoor stage. A boutique festival, this will be a day of quality jazz, fine wine and good food.
The event will run from 12pm to 9.30pm and feature live music, dancers and pop-up performances throughout the afternoon and early evening. it’s a chance for patrons to get up close and personal with many great jazz artists. Along with Galapagos Duck, the festival will also feature top jazz artists The View from Madeleine’s Couch, Wil Sargisson, SCAT, Ewan MacKenzie and many others – an amazing variety of jazz from swing, to Brazilian, to blues, to funk and even Gypsy jazz. Tickets are $95 and numbers are limited. Bookings can be made through – www.nambourwinterjazzfest.net.au

In the Wild Inspirational
T

HiS WEEK i WENT for a walk on a property just out of Maleny to help the landholders plan and assist for ongoing bush regeneration on their property. This is one of those steep blocks cleared of native vegetation early last century, that was at best agriculturally productive for a few decades before being colonised by Lantana, Broad-leaf Privet and over the last few decades a host of garden escapees. in the midst of all this weed invasion however native rainforest seedlings have returned and the current landholders have invested their time and money into restoring the native vegetation. This is the work of a passionate and dedicated people and the bush regenerators they have assembled to help them with their project, truly inspirational! So, in this article i’d like to pay tribute to all those great landholders out there who are regenerating the landscape and the great benefits, these dedicated people bring to us all. The hills and valleys of the Blackall Range have been fertile ground (pardon the pun) for the development of a culture that appreciates the diversity and richness of our local ecosystems. Many local people now make a living in the bush regeneration & revegetation industry and work far afield using skills developed and honed on the Blackall Range. But i digress...for the real heroes in this story are the people that call the range
Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193
home and who put their time and resources into restoring their land in a selfless act of generosity for which we will all benefit. Corridors have been planted that will link isolated remnants and help the animals and plants that call those remnants home to survive. Creek banks have been planted that will reduce erosion and improve water quality – a shared resource to us all. Forests have been planted that will absorb carbon from the atmosphere, stabilise landscape, improve soil quality. Habitat has also increased to provide homes for wildlife through the installing of nest boxes, snags in creeks (dead trees not sausages – just in case you were wondering!) and revegetation. We are all fortunate to be part of this community, a community that is so active in restoring health to the landscape, through the actions of so many passionate individuals and groups. But there’s so much more to be done. Many of us are concerned with the loss of Rainforests in South America or South East Asia, but what we often forget is that a little closer to home we are fortunate to live with one of the most diverse subtropical rainforest ecosystems on earth and the fate of these ecosystems and their diversity is in our hands. Thank you to all those local heroes out there who are busy restoring these ecosystems and remember, the rainforest needs you!
Join Roving Restorers
W
HETHER WE ARE OLD hands at revegetating our properties, new to the game, or enthusiastic gardeners, there are always opportunities to learn or discover something new. Perhaps a nomadic bird not previously seen may be at the water dish, a magnificent python may pay a quiet visit and then be discovered by Lewin honeyeaters making a noisy protest, but taking care not to get too close. There are opportunities through Barung to join Roving Restorers, a program initiated by Hinterland Bush Links. This enthusiastic band of Barung members regularly visit a range of properties whose owners need a bit of assistance with weed control or whatever tasks need doing. What a great way to see what others are undertaking in their revegetation activities and of course to visit places not usually seen. What better way to meet other like-minded citizens
and make new friends. The Gardens for Wildlife program is an introduction to creating an attractive garden using a range of mostly native species suited to that particular environment. This is a learning exercise even for the “old hands”. Workshops are advertised on the website. Land for Wildlife offers yet more opportunities. Property visits and other activities are organised through the Land for Wildlife officers in the Sunshine Coast Council. These officers are the custodians of a wealth of information about our region. To live in a rainforest environment and then visit a property which is predominantly tall eucalypt forest is a real education. Our environment on the Blackall Range and its foothills is incredibly diverse due to its geological origins and therefore its vegetation. Some understorey plants are familiar, others quite different and ferns may dominate at
ground level rather than shrubs. Koalas may even be present. A great way to enjoy a morning out. Whether you have been at it for years or are just starting, a revegetation program is rewarding, educational, good for fitness levels and remarkably social. All are welcome so come and join us.

Cr Greg Rogerson said, “important reconstruction works will be carried out on approximately 300m of Dulong Road, around the Dulong lookout, including realigning to allow for parking bays, improving vehicle sight lines and traffic lane deviation to reduce speed and improve safety around the car parking area.” Division 10 highlights for the 2017/18 budget include: • $1.75 million to replace the timber Petrie Park Road Bridge, Nambour • $836,000 towards the Nambour Heritage Tramway Project • $775,000 to streetscape Farrell Street and Stephens Street, yandina • $584,000 for car park, drainage and road improvements in Nambour Showgrounds • $277,000 to upgrade the car park at Dulong Road • $170,000 to renew the public amenities in Cilento Park, Nambour • $170,000 to rehabilitate the public amenities in Koala Park, Nambour • $150,000 to remove and relocate the Petrie Creek Parklands pathway, Nambour • $140,000 to upgrade Kiamba Road, Nambour
Public transport for Kenilworth? No form of public transport operates in Kenilworth, nor is the Council Link service for seniors available here. Council did try a taxi-based Flexilink service but this was discontinued two years ago when it was reported that the subsidy per person per trip was over $70. The Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce believes public transport is needed for local residents, particularly in order to access medical and other services in Nambour – our nearest major town. in particular, Kenilworth has an ageing population, some of whom do not drive, and others are unwilling to use the notorious Obi Obi road. The Chamber has been researching how to provide a viable transport service with minimal outside support. Two options are being looked at, one is based on using a commercial mini bus to provide a booked service for one or two days per week (which would require a small Council Subsidy), the other is based on a community owned mini bus operated by the community for the community, and analysis suggests it could be run at a profit. in order to provide evidence for sufficient passenger numbers the Chamber has obtained a SC Council Minor Grant to operate a one day a week service from Kenilworth to Nambour over a three month period. in parallel with this service a survey, funded by Peter Wellington MLA, will be conducted to provide evidence for scheduling, routing, fare structures etc. The trial service, starting in July, will be conducted with support from Sunny Coast Tours and with bookings taken via the Kenilworth information Centre.

iNTER iS UPON US, and it’s a great time to check the structural integrity of your deciduous trees, now that they have been stripped of their summer garments. you are looking for limbs that are either broken, crossing, diseased, or dead, and also checking for tight, acute angle ‘v’ forks, that are potential failure points. it is also a great time to do any structural pruning of ANy of your trees, as the sap flow is low, enabling them to cope with wounding a lot more efficiently. The principle is the similar to how you can bare-root transplant stone fruit trees when they have lost their leaves in
winter, with no ill-effects. Some of our winter work is driven by peoples’ need for more winter sun that the rapidly growing trees have stolen from them. What provided lovely shade in summer now creates dark, cold, damp areas. Careful, intelligent pruning can usually provide a balance so that both needs are met. Now is a perfect time to check sun angles and shade in your garden, because the midday sun is at its lowest point for the year, so you can check tree heights and see where they might need to be pruned to, so as to give the desired amount of sun / shade.

HE QUEENSLAND Cross Country Championships are to be held right here in Maleny on July 29 - it is fantastic news!
Wendy talks on the healing power of gems, and Marisa explains so clearly how our society is impacting on our health, while Mary and Tim help you with pain management. We also show you where you can receive home care advice on the Range and how you can make a difference in preventing suicide. To a healthy, active month!
Suicide prevention is a cause worth fighting for
O
UR TOWNS AND Communities Matter project began in 2016 with a funding grant to help prevent suicide. The project collated information about suicide rates in the Hinterland and the lack of resources to assist community members post-suicide. Community and organisation consultations were held in Maleny, Glasshouse, Kenilworth and Beerwah. Stories were gathered from families affected by suicide and a report produced with recommendations on how to move forward with support. As a result, three groups were set up in Maleny, Beerwah and Kenilworth to consider issues identified in the community consultations and to progress them, to reduce the risk of suicide and increase protective factors. The Maleny Wellbeing Group (MWG) has been formed and is held every second Monday of the month from 1.30pm2.30pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. A spokesperson from the group said, “Our purpose is to look at ways we, as a community, can be equipped when these tragic circumstances occur, but more so how we can prevent, as far as possible, a person suiciding. “We aim to have least one person per community / sporting organisation trained in addressing the topic of suicide and equipping them to support someone who is at risk and to link them to services that could help.” The Hinterland Strategic Reference Group was also set up where government and funded organisations were invited to attend quarterly forums with hinterland groups and look at how to support the community. The MWG spokesperson said, “We are asking for people who would like to commit to attend meetings once a month, support local events that contribute to the connection and consider attending free training.” For details please contact Nooreen Harris at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on coordinatordw@malenync.org.au or (07) 3051 6310.

With all the best Wendy Rosenfeldt intentions we can get swayed by the environment and our own ebb and flow of feeling good about ourselves. Hormonal changes, emotional reactions as well as stress and fatigue can influence how well we maintain a balanced diet and lifestyle. We are subject to many influences on our state of wellbeing. The climate and consciousness of the people in the society we live in as well as our homes and places of work have an influence on how we feel. Vedic knowledge is all about bringing back balance to the individual and creating unity between the individual and the environment. At the most subtle level of existence, at the quantum level of life we are all connected. Diving into this level of awareness through Transcending resets the liveliness of this connection. At this level of unified awareness, the intelligence of how all the different aspects of the physiology should function and how they interact with all the other parts is integrated, but as the intelligence unfolds into matter, there can be a break down in the unity of the whole. The disorder comes about through the process of manifestation. Just by living and being out in the world we experience this breakdown in our experience of unity with the environment as well as the deterioration in our minds and bodies as we age. We are all subject to the entropy of the universe and this can be sped
up by poor lifestyle choices, emotional upheaval and the circumstances of daily life. it is important to counteract the disorderliness with a regular infusion of coherence. Maharishi Vedic Light Gem therapy works on the light body or quantum energy field of the body. The gems are used in conjunction with a special light that enhances their orderly and balancing qualities. Gem stones are the most orderly expression of the mineral kingdom and this orderliness can be transferred to the human nervous system. Each gemstone has a particular effect on the mind and body and helps to awaken the healing intelligence of the physiology. in an MLG session, a trained practitioner evaluates the gems that are most suitable for the individual. it is a subtle and enjoyable treatment and some of the reported benefits include feeling more integrated, increased energy, mental clarity and feelings of bliss. Many people experience expanded awareness and refinement of perception that stays with them after the session. if the cause of the problem can be located in consciousness and treated on that level it is far easier than waiting until it has manifested into a full blown disorder. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurvedic Practitioner and Teaching or Transcendental Meditation. To find out more about Maharishi Light Gem Treatments go to www.ayurveda.org.au (modalities) or come to an information session on Tuesday the 18th of July at 1.30pm in Maleny. OU KNOW WHAT iTS LiKE, you decide to clean up that old stuff you’ve been telling yourself you’ll look at one day, only to find that as you drag it out, it often makes a greater mess. you now have two choices, one is to pretend its not there and put it all away for another day, or you can persevere, and look at it, giving yourself time to reassess your past decisions and choices. That’s sort of whats happening on a global scale at the moment. Theres no putting it off, its time to wake up and look at what is and see what changes need to be made. Our bodies are under an increasing amount of stress and tension, from the hidden toxins in our food, our physical environment, our air and from the technology that was supposed to make life easier for us. ill health or lowered energy, cancer, a sense of overwhelm, aches and pains, all these have become something we’ve come to accept as normal. Financial stress, relationship stress, political stress, violence and drug addiction, touch most lives in one way or another. We see turmoil and cracks in the facade of every aspect of life and because they are no longer out there, rather reaching us on a more personal level, this changing reality is hard to ignore. Much of what is offered through news or media reporting is
simply inane distraction and repetition that either dumbs us down or makes us feel insecure about where the world is heading. Remember that when confusion gets too great our minds tend to shut down. And yet the greatest tool with which to shape our reality is our mind. Not in the power of our mind for that alone fluctuates depending on input and distractions, but in our ability to connect our mind to a greater source of inspired wisdom and direction. i find that during these times of change, vibrational remedies chosen specifically for each individual and their circumstances can help hold the mind and emotions steady, thus helping the body to stay in balance and this benefits every aspect of our lives, from the way we interact with those around us to the choices we make, while assisting us to wake up and transition through changes and clearings that society and each individual intuitively knows we need to make. "Pain depends on how much danger your brain thinks you are in, often not how much danger you are actually in." Pain is designed to get you out of trouble. However, pain and the amount of tissue damage occurring often do not relate. An example of this would be a person feeling neck pain/headache driving past the spot where they sustained a whiplash injury in a motor vehicle accident years before. it is not so much tissue/cellular injury causing the pain response. The person essentially feels threatened. Here, many other output systems such as the motor, memory, emotion, visual, sensory, autonomic and immune system to name a few are working together, allowing us to escape danger, cope or heal. The Neuro Orthopaedic institute (NOi Group) based in Adelaide is an independent international group of Physiotherapists dedicated to research and education in pain. Current research encompasses a biological (neuroscience) and psychosocial paradigm to help 'Explain Pain'. Over the past years, many Medical and Allied Health Professionals, including our Physiotherapists at Maleny Physiotherapy have attended their courses in an effort to improve clinical outcomes – for patients, therapists and the clinical team. As we continue to learn more about pain, some of our physiotherapy treatment strategies and techniques have developed and changed and new language or dialogue to educate our clients has emerged.

Fully Equipped Studio Certified & Experienced Teachers Teachers “It’s my L5 disc, it is slipped!” The language we use builds very strong images in our minds of pain and dysfunction. This sounds like the back is unstable, unreliable and dangerous. As clinicians we often examine spines that have radiological evidence of disc disease, but the spinal level named is not the structure/level causing pain! Metaphors are commonly used to express how we feel about pain and its effect. This too, gives us clues as clinicians as to how to help our patients. For more reading, visit www.noigroup.com or come in and see Tim or Mary Bagshaw at Maleny Physiotherapy and discuss and learn something about ‘Explain Pain’. We will add more articles in this column from time to time to expand on this topic.
