The value of connection
T
HERE iS SoMETHiNG i love about living here – human contact. People wave from cars or on the street, shopkeepers know your name, locals stop for a chat or an impromptu coffee. There are times when we crave anonymity, for sure, but i’d rather pay for my shopping talking about life with Ann in the post office, than just swipe my goods across a machine and leave, head down. We need to connect and support each other, and what better way to celebrate that than through the multitude of events and stories locals send to us at the Hinterland Times? This month sees Pollyanna from Palmwoods join women across the world, connecting to plant millions of trees, helping our planet and future generations. A special gentleman, Douglas Bailey in Maleny, invites the community to his 90th birthday.

oLLYANNA iS A multi-faceted woman: an intuitive coach, a writer, singer, mother, activist and TreeSister. Born in the UK, she has been living in Australia for over 24 years based in Cairns, Perth and Brisbane before moving to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. “We came here for a visit and i saw Mount Cooroora and said, ‘i have to live here’. We moved to the obi Valley before moving to the Palmwoods area where we had to find a home for six people, two dogs, chickens and blue-tongue lizards – not easy!” in 2011, Pollyanna came across a video by Clare Dubois, the founder of an organisation called TreeSisters, whose main aim is to replant and restore rainforest, and create new ones. “i saw the video and burst into tears, it was so inspiring. “i contacted Clare and said, ‘You’ve got me, i want to help. What can i do?’ and i’ve been volunteering ever since.” Such is her dedication for spreading the word and work of TreeSisters that she is now the Australian and New Zealand Coordinator. “We are building a grassroots network across the world and it is really quite amazing.” TreeSisters focus their attention on the tropics, where

trees grow fast. “We put trees in the ground in Kenya, Madagascar, Nepal, Cameroon, india and Brazil, and also empower local women who do much of the nursery work and planting.” Pollyanna is also part of the Billion Trees Campaign: “We are planting 2.4 million trees a year at the moment, and this has been funded by women and men like you and i donating small amounts ($5 to $20 a month). “We have ‘tree brothers’,” she smiles, “men who support women, this organisation and donate to the cause.” As Pollyanna shows me some of TreeSister’s work online, i notice that her computer search engine looks a bit different. “This is Ecosia,” Pollyanna explains. “They channel funds from their clicks to planting trees, and their financial reports are live online, so i like the transparency. it also shows me how many trees i have helped to fund so far in the top corner...217, which is encouraging!” Planting trees and protecting existing ones is, Pollyanna insists, not a ‘green’ issue. “This is a human issue. We can’t sustain ourselves and our children if we don’t sustain our environment. i don’t want to say, ‘So, i screwed it all up, you deal with it’ to my kids. “Trees are incredibly important: they filter pollution from the air, they draw up groundwater from deep in the earth which keeps our rivers and creeks flowing; they ensure more rainfall through seeding the clouds, and chemical compounds released from their leaves benefit human immune systems.
TreeSister Pollyanna knows the vital importance of protecting trees
“Did you know that four people can be provided with oxygen from one old, large tree? We need the old trees – saplings take many years to produce and provide all these things, and we don’t have that time.” in Palmwoods lately there has been growing concern amongst community members about the increase in development and the removal of trees, vegetation and, allegedly, wildlife corridors. And the displacement of native animals. Pollyanna insists she is not against development if it is done sympathetically to the environment and character of the area, and there is decent infrastructure in place. “if you stand on the lookout at Balmoral Ridge on the way to Maleny, you can see all those beautiful trees. They are the reason we have less risk of intense wildfires. The trees bring our rainfall and protect the land from overheating. “Down in Palmwoods, if you walk past the tennis courts where the big fig trees are, you can feel the difference in temperature.” Together with Palmwoods resident, Mel Stephens, Pollyanna has created a Facebook page, Save our Green Corridors – Hinterland Alliance, to help people become aware of where the future is heading for this area and to have their say. “in the South East Queensland Regional Plan, hinterland rail towns are earmarked as ‘accommodation solutions’. That means more development – and we need to make sure it is done right.” Pollyanna believes in educating the young about the importance of trees and recently organised a tree planting for Montville State

School on July 27 to mark National Schools Tree Day with Planet Ark. “We are doing a gold coin donation for TreeSisters, a picnic on the oval, and the Year 6 students will learn how to plant trees with a member of local Barung Landcare. “Those students will then teach the younger kids as part of their leadership skills; so everyone will plant a tree to create a little rainforest where some fig trees were damaged in a storm.” Professional artist, Judith Sinnamon, who creates majestic and beautiful paintings of native trees, will also be holding a painting workshop for the students. “our region is fairly well vegetated at the moment,” says Pollyanna, “but it won’t be if we don’t act now. We need our trees and we need to protect our land, our wildlife, and our children’s future.” For more information on TreeSisters, visit www.treesisters.org

oUGLAS BAiLEY has been described as ageless, doesn’t notice when birthdays flit by and says a positive attitude is key. He describes himself as an ‘almost Buddhist’ and recounts his 90 years in relation to colours. “i was born an only child in Bristol during the depression - food scarce, nutrition poor. Early childhood was grey. “My education was lacking until we moved to Bournemouth when i was eight years old and the next four years signified the orange-yellow colours of sunshine. Happy times with friends, garden concerts and costumes. “Then we went back to Bristol and the nomadic lifestyle. i finished school at age 14 not knowing very much at all.”

Douglas began working for the railway as an offsider on the horse and cart, delivering goods. in his early 20s he was in the employ of airline BoAC in London as a records clerk. Then it was suggested by a colleague that a move to Australia might be a good prospect. “i didn’t have a clue where Australia was…perhaps somewhere vaguely east of Russia!” said Douglas with a chuckle, adding the desire for adventure spurred him on. “The ship rolled its way from Britain to Australia via the Suez and Egypt. i enjoyed ship life…interesting people and interesting ports. “A ten-pound pom, i arrived in Brisbane with two shillings and five pence and just took one day at a time. i lived in a boarding house where the landlady allowed us to stay rent free until we were employed.” The transition to this new life was enlivening: “Cheeky Australian humour, cartoons, ‘Dad and Dave’, Brisbane architecture and houses on stilts. it was all so unique and,

everyone was good looking! No more grey - all bright colours.” Douglas soon acquired a position at NACo, a company that made washing machines. “After my first day at work i was paid for that day. on my way home, i stopped in Fortitude Valley and spent my wages buying food for the boarding house because there was a group of people without jobs. Then i walked home because i had no money but had food for everyone. “Another boarder who started work that day, gave me money from his salary so i had my fare to work the next morning. We helped each other. “After NACo, a few odd jobs, then i landed a position at the University of Queensland, Veterinary Science Department as a laboratory assistant. Before long they discovered my talent for drawing. “My boss was writing a book and trying to draw the dissection of sheep. He showed me some drawings he was
struggling with so i asked if he’d like me to do them. From that time, i became departmental artist. This led to a 30year career.” involvement with community theatre also played a big part in Douglas’s life. His forte was creating props and stage sets. He danced, sang and acted and travelled the world remembering those years as warm colours and exciting times. After 35 years at UQ Douglas was offered early retirement. He was replaced by a computer. “At that stage, i had a mass of drawings i’d kept and took home otherwise they might have been destroyed. i presented them to the Department of Anatomy which is now at Gatton. i’m told they’re framing them.” Unprepared for retirement in his early sixties, Douglas was without direction. “Up until that time whilst at the university, i also worked part-time as an artist for Channel 7. Then, i didn’t do anything useful except a lot of bushwalking and maintained theatre interests.” Eight years after retirement, life’s brightest colours were about to enfold Douglas. “i’d been up and down the coast looking for my place then discovered Maleny, buying the first block i saw at Witta. it was instinctive.
“i appreciated the town’s architecture. The only modern place was the ANZ Bank, everything else was rustic. i’ve been here 25 years and loved every minute. “For a while i kept busy with clearing the block, planting trees, and building. i didn’t really get involved with anything until the cooperative, UpFront Club was established.” Douglas was among the first to volunteer. After seeing empty coffee cups on every table, he asked if he could help and so began 20 years of service until The Club closed in 2016. i met Douglas Bailey in 2000 and recall his zest and enthusiasm. When he wasn’t waiting tables or washing dishes he drew caricatures of staff. The line-up decorated a kitchen wall. on music nights, women of all ages targeted Douglas as their dance partner. Rock ‘n roll or Latin American, he tirelessly cavorted throughout the evening. He adds: “i only learnt Latin American dancing when i came to Maleny and went on to teach Cha-cha-cha. Prior to that i was a keen ballroom dancer.” Maintaining his one-acre property, window dressing for Lifeline for almost 10 years and Maleny Film Society added to Douglas Bailey’s community involvement. More recently, he features at Maleny Music Festival as our own ‘Mr Squiggle’. To prepare for ‘the birthday you have when you’re not having a birthday’, Douglas is creating a depiction of his life with photos, drawings and art. And the colour of life in Maleny? His face lit up and the vibrant character that is our Douglas said, “oh, all the colours, Maleny is the kaleidoscope.” Friends are invited to Douglas Bailey’s 90th Birthday Bash. Sunday, July 15 at the Witta Recreational Club, 1pm – 5pm. Cake cut at 3pm. No presents. Bring a plate. Cash bar available.

ARAH WiLLiAMS loves romance and writing; so melding the two was the perfect career choice for this accomplished woman. You will find Sarah speaking at conferences and writing festivals, teaching writing courses and mentoring aspiring authors. When she is not doing those things, she is working on a new book or interviewing well-known authors about their writing journey for her podcast ‘Write with Love’. Home for Sarah and her family is picturesque Witta, a haven to enjoy a lovely view from their large comfortable veranda where i sat, hearing of her writing journey. Born in Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North island, Sarah grew up on a kiwifruit orchard in the coastal region, now known for its wineries and orchards. “it was a quiet rural area, so i had to amuse myself.” She started using her dolls to act out elaborate storylines inspired by TV shows such as Beverly Hills 90210 and The Young and the Restless. “My dad travelled for work and brought me home a new Barbie doll each trip.” These dolls sparked the creative flare for Sarah in creating her own storylines. “i also developed a taste for romantic storylines watching daytime soap operas with Mum after school!” Sarah laughed. At 14, Sarah read a book given to her by an aunty. Entitled This Calder Range, it was written by American romance author, Janet Dailey.

Set in the American West, the novel drew her into a world of cowboys and indians. “i loved being able to escape into another world.” Sarah was soon devouring all forms of fiction but she would always return to romantic fiction. Sarah was soon interested in becoming an author and, knowing this, her father offered some wise advice. “Dad said to me, ‘Sarah, you need to get some life experience so that you can become a great author’.” While in high school she wrote her first novel which has never been published but still holds a special place in her heart. Sarah pursued a career in tourism and, whilst working part-time for her husband’s business and juggling four young children, she decided to start writing again. “i was living in Townsville and we had a writers’ festival. Romance author, Barbara Hannay, presented a workshop that i attended. it was fantastic and taught me a lot about structuring a novel and the whole writing process.” At Barbara’s suggestion, Sarah joined the Romance Writers of Australia (RWA) and received support, mentoring and advice. FAMILY FORTUNES Since the 1940s the Watson name has been at the core of business endeavours in Maleny. Most known to present day locals is Watson’s Garage, emanating history from its antiquated building. Visiting Maleny
by Gay Liddington
ALTER LEoNARD WATSoN was renowned for his entrepreneurship from the time he and his family, wife Christina with children Doug, Dawn, Thelma, Neville and Glenda settled in Maleny in 1944. Glenda Braden, youngest of the five, remembers those early days. “We lived in a storeroom/shed about 20 feet square, seven of us including four teenagers and me a schoolgirl. it was owned by Maleny Motors and used to garage their hearse. They moved the hearse out and we moved in. The building is still there, down the lane that leads to the rooftop carpark. it later became Maple Street Mart.” After living in cramped conditions for almost two years Walter Watson purchased Rosedale, the home of Mr and Mrs A. Cooke on Maple Street. A man of vision, Walter extended the building to create a gentleman’s boarding house later known as Maleny Lodge providing accommodation for the likes of bank managers and teachers. This was managed by wife Chris, a charming hostess who made boarders feel at home. Son Doug said that his mother was a friend to everybody. Glenda adds: “Mum didn’t cater meals. Boarders always went to the café at night. it was where Peace of Green is now situated.” While Chris ran the boarding house, Walter busied himself with the local goods transport business, taxi and bus service he purchased in 1944. it was located across from the current Cooke Park.
During the summer months picnic bus excursions to Caloundra Beach were highpoints for hinterland locals. Dances and balls were also an integral part of the social calendar throughout the late 1940s and ‘50s. imagine a 1937 Bedford truck converted into a bus winding its way around the precarious mountain roads. Watson’s buses serviced the area from Conondale to Glasshouse and all stops in between to ensure merrymakers arrived at their function and then safely home. “Dad used to drive the taxi, a 1939 Vauxhall. When the blokes were away at war, he’d bring the ladies into town to do their shopping detouring via the boarding house to drop off the kids. Mum happily volunteered to babysit. Shopping done, the taxi would come back, pick up kids, then take them all home,” said Glenda. When Walter Watson bought their house from the Cooke family there was a paddock next door. This is where Walter, Doug and Neville built the present garage and workshop in 1954. “Dad was one of 12, never went to school but the teacher came around every six months. He ended up building three houses in Maleny but never had a lesson in carpentry.” Glenda celebrated her ninth birthday at the boarding house and lived there for 13 years until her marriage to Kevin Braden in 1957. “i was 16 when i met Kevin on the dance floor at Conondale. He asked me for the last dance and we’ve been dancing ever since. “We also used to go to dances at Witta. The building is now the Witta Recreational Club hall but back then there were no walls, all open air and rather chilly in winter. When we had

Doug and Neville retired after 45 years in business but retained ownership of the garage and workshop. Neville died in 2011 passing it on to Doug who sold the premises in December, 2017. The Watson business savvy continues in the Maleny community: Nellie Finley, Glenda’s daughter owns Nellie’s Creative Hair Design and employs five locals. Neil Braden bought the school bus run, Ahern’s Road to Conondale school in 2017. Maleny Motor Trimmers is owned by Doug’s son Brian with wife Joy. Since those beginnings when a family of seven cramped into a shed off Maple Street, four generations of the Watson family have grown and flourished following in the footsteps of their patriarch, the enterprising, Walter Leonard Watson.

kids, they used to lie on a blanket under the seat.” in the ‘70s, continuing the Watson family tradition, Kevin and Glenda went into the business of driving school buses: Conondale to Kenilworth high and the ConondaleCambroon primary school run. This stretched over a period of 30 years. A bus shelter at Cambroon was named in their honour. Glenda continues the family story: “My mother died suddenly in 1958, six months after my wedding. She was in her early ‘50s. “After that time Dad divided Fig Street into eight blocks,
four on each side. He and the boys with a little help from tradesmen built two houses using handmade bricks, one for Doug and the other for Nev. Those houses still stand today. “The family home was sold in 1959 and Dad passed away three years later.” The business of W.L. Watson & Sons continued. Doug and Neville managed the garage and as people acquired more transport, they diversified into school buses, general cartage including furniture removal and operated the Maleny-Landsborough mail run for 30 years. “The boys also delivered molasses for stock feed locally, north as far as Bundaberg, out to the Darling Downs and south, down around the northern rivers region.” on hearing Glenda’s story, the industriousness of the Watson brothers supported by their wives is beyond comprehension. Apart from their mechanical workshop and bus runs, there was a period of time when Doug made molasses tanks and truck bodies. it seems there was no job too big or too small…welding, spray painting, panel beating, while Nev drove the trucks and kept track of finances. Watson’s Garage reached its 50-year milestone in 2004.

The
Principal Questions Our Hinterland schools are pretty special, and some of them have relatively new principals to steer them forward. We thought it would be interesting to talk to the person at the helm and this month it’s Principal Ann Donoghue from the Ananda Marga River School in Maleny.
WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 2 in last month’s article, i discussed formalities that must appear in a Will in order for it to be a valid document. in this article i discuss matters that should appear in a Will and why. A Will Should contain the following: 1. EXECUTORS: Appointment of one or more executors. The executor’s job is to carry out the wishes of the Testator as these are set out in the Will. Provided that the person is aged 18 or over and does not lack mental capacity any person can be appointed to that position including a beneficiary of that Will. it is always a good idea to appoint two or more executors in case one executor should predecease the Testator. 2.
GIFTS: The Will should also discuss how gifts of property are to be distributed.
3. RESIDUE: The residue means the left-over property of the Testator after the Testator has given away specific items of property. An example could be where the Testator gives his house to a beneficiary but does not mention what is to happen with the rest of his assets such as cash and shares. if the Will contained a Residue clause then these non-specific and non itemized pieces of assets will be able to be distributed. if, on the other hand, the Will did not contain a Residue clause then the result would be partial intestacy. intestacy means that those items of property not specifically gifted away would have to be distributed in terms of the rules of intestacy rather than as one might imagine that the Testator would have wanted. 4. ATTESTATION: The attestation of a Will states that the Testator signed the Will in the presence of both witnesses. The best place for an attestation clause to appear is at the end of the Will. Should the Will not contain an attestation clause and the witnesses not be found to clarify that they were both present when the Testator signed the Will then it may be impossible to obtain a grant of probate of the Will.
1. How are your family with the move to this area? My partner and i moved to Maleny from Northern NSW (originally both from Canberra), in 1997 so i could take up a teaching position at The River School and Steve to renovate the Old Witta School House. We felt very welcomed and within a short time became part of the fabric that makes up this vibrant hinterland community. 2. What do you do on your days off? Cooking, reading and visiting family and friends is how i spend my time relaxing. Regular walks into town with my beautiful dog Jet, who also accompanies me to School, is one of my favourite ways of enjoying the beauty of the hinterland. 3. Is this your first Principal role? Yes! it is an honour to lead a school that i have been part of for the last 21 years as teacher, Senior Teacher, Deputy and now Principal. 4. Why did you choose to become an educator? Since year 8 at high school i have wanted to be a teacher. i am passionate about learning and working with young
people to develop their sense of self-worth, knowledge, and the skills required to navigate into their future. 5.
What are the strengths of the school community? At the heart of our school community are the neohumanist principles that promote kindness, connection and respect towards all things. We nurture the development of the whole child through rich content and a variety of learning opportunities that are expansive, flexible, creative and culturally sensitive. 6. What are your plans for the school during 2019? We have developed a comprehensive and supportive Behaviour Management policy, which has provided an important, practical framework that guides positive behaviour and harmonious relationships between students. 7. What is the most rewarding part of your job? This would have to be seeing the smiles on the faces of our young people everyday. Add to this the stunning River School environment that provides for rich outdoor

MALENY TRAVELLER
BEST DISCOUNT OFFERS FOR YEARS Ours is a radar-driven industry, and right now travel is off most people’s travel radar! There are thousands of opinions as to why .... but let’s not go there. I’m here to confide there has not been a downturn in the travel market since the eighties. One advantage of my long-time experience. However, there are great positives for travellers in the current market with exceptional discounts and add-on bonus incentives. All to encourage you to take a holiday. Principal, Ann Donoghoe, from the River School with Year 6 students

What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt along the way? Allowing the time to discover the ‘back story’ can go a long way to making sense of the present and navigating a path forward. This is especially important when assisting students to reconnect and repair relationships.

We are hoping this year the station will be located near the Village Green, just before the cyclists head down Razorback Road. if you are interested in helping or wish to find out more details please contact Edi Heide via e-mail ediheide@gmail.com or come into The opalcutter (Shop 4 ‘The Pottery’ building 171-183 Main Street Montville) to register your intention or get more details. if you are interested in cycling, you will need to register by July 18, via the website: velothonsunshinecoast.com.au As the Velothon organisers state, “The 3-day Velothon is not for the faint hearted with its epic climbs and

Did a teacher or Principal inspire you when you were a student? Yes, my Geography teacher, Mrs Majors, made learning fun with plenty of practical, real life activities. She taught us that mistakes can become the tools for learning and that it is important not give up when things get hard. 10. challenging descents. King of the Mountain sections will include some of the Sunshine Coasts best road cycling climbs. Featuring sublime views of both the coast and hinterland. Fast and winding descents make the climbs all the more worthwhile.” if three days is perhaps too much for you, the 1-day ride offers the choice of 90km or 152km distances around the northern area of Noosa and into the hinterland. So, take your pick, saddle up or help serve food and drink - either way, you will have a great time!
Some examples: Five-star river cruise companies with last minute discounts of 30-40% off selected European river cruises; well-known cruise lines offering high cabin credits; on-board spending money; cabin upgrades, bottles of wine, no surcharge dining at specialty restaurants, included shore excursions. Some overseas-based cruise lines are offering free return flights and with hotel accommodation in Europe, and there is usually an option to extend your stay. It is not unusual to be able to cruise the Mediterranean for under a $100 per day!! Plus, Scenic and APT have released their 2019/20 Early Birds Offers. And so it goes. Do keep an eye on the weekend travel pages! See a tour or cruise you just love? Then do bring in the details and let us see if we can re-create a similar personalised journey for you by trimming the cost to a more realistic level. Or, let us explain where (or, not) the value is. Finally, if you really want the best value airfare, then impulse booking on-line is not the way to go! Recent statistics show 40% of online fares are incorrectly booked...the airlines as well as their on-line re-sellers sites just love you! – as they boost their revenue by applying cancellation and reissue fees. Do your research and plan in advance with an experienced Travel Designer who knows how to make your dollar fly further. Until next time, Gillian

Exotic Marigold wins over Witta
A
NUMBER oF years ago, Sam Kulkarni and Ron Coxhell opened the Bombay Mahal in the old Baptist Church at the end of Maple Street. With authentic indian dishes from Sam’s home state of Maharashtra in central india, this was quite a deviation from his engineering and iT degrees! But Sam’s true passion was different, it was learnt at his Mother’s side and in the family catering business. it was this passion that lured him into kitchens of various sizes and disciplines. However, it was his native indian dishes that he loved to cook the most that inspired his indian restaurant in Brisbane, then Montville, Maleny and now to the Exotic Marigold licensed restaurant in Witta. The arrival of the Exotic Marigold has pleased many of the old Bombay clients who flocked to tables as soon as the opening evening was announced in June. Sam was happy to see so many of the old familiar faces particularly as he had moved on from the old Bombay Mahal roughly seven years earlier. Renowned for the quality and freshness of his dishes, everyone is pleased he is back. The dining experience he creates with himself at the helm and his team ready to help, will make your night. WiTTA HAS A WiNNER.

VICTORIA’S SECRET
Maleny Hair and Beauty team, here to make you feel fantastic for 2018
ALENY HAiR AND BEAUTY celebrates its 20th year in Maleny, as the town’s longest established salon. owner Victoria Elston, with daughter Katharine and staff, have won an impressive number of ‘Excellence in Service’ business awards over the last five years.
M
Not surprising, considering the team offer treatments ranging from Dead Sea Salt body exfoliation and deluxe manicures, to hair extensions and tinting with vegan friendly, nontoxic products. Plus, an indulgent pampering package for a bride-to-be and her friends. While chatting with Victoria at the newly relocated salon in Bunya Street, HT discovered she is also a queen! “Unbeknown to me, some friends had entered me into Brisbane's annual fundraising and beauty pageant in 1984 called the Warana Festival,” Victoria revealed. “i actually won the quest commemorating Brisbane’s 100 years and was crowned Queen Victoria! The prize included an overseas trip for two.”
“My husband Mark and i made the move to Maleny in 1988 after discovering, like many still do, Maleny was the perfect country town with an envious lifestyle to bring up children.”
Victoria explains the salon’s expansion is now able to cater for the towns continuing growth including much needed private car parking access for the business.
“
For the next year of her reign as an ambassador, Victoria worked tirelessly raising funds for the less fortunate.
“
I actually won the quest and ... the prize included an overse as trip for tw o.
“We can’t wait to welcome our customers as friends, so pop in and say hi.”

VILLAGE WEDDING EXPO - MONTVILLE
Find wedding inspiration on
Montville Village Green L
OVE LIVES in our gorgeous village, and the Hinterland Times is proud to be associated with A Village Wedding Expo, the perfect place for wedding plans to take shape and come to fruition. Open from 9am – 3.30pm on Sunday 29 July, Memorial Avenue, Montville, A Village Wedding Expo brings together inventive artists ready to be your inspiration. Montville Chamber of Commerce President, Shiralee Cooper, is thrilled the Expo will be held in this picturesque town for the sixth year running. “A wedding brings together an innovative team of wedding professionals and showcases our creative artisans,” she said. “Every wedding has its own unique vibe, as a team of dream weavers work together to create each special event.” The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is home to many creative souls, who will add music, colour, texture, aroma and flavour to enhance your wedding experience. Wedding planners and stylists are now key organisers behind many weddings, with talented photographers recording the mood and memories of those magical moments. “As you explore the wedding vendors in our heritage halls and outdoor exhibitors under the magnificent Moreton Bay Figs, ensure you visit our photographers
to appreciate why they are leading the industry,” Shiralee added. Once the feel of the wedding has been planned and the venue chosen, a myriad of details need to sing from the same sheet. “Our fabulous florists can enhance the ambiance with their florals arrangements and arbours,” said Shiralee. “The cake is often a centrepiece statement and if you can dream it, the many talented hinterland wedding cake makers can most likely make it.” The cuisine adds colour, taste and style. From simple grazing platters to elegant fine dining, chefs and caterers can create the perfect plate. “The bride’s styling is often a creative collaboration, “ Shiralee shared. ”Not only can the all-important wedding dress be a unique design but details such as bespoke rings can be designed locally.
Jeweller Andrew James, forging unique rings in Montville
Shiralee explained, “From exclusive opal designs to hand-made creations from Makersville, and glistening glass jewellery from Illume Creations - all are on display at our Wedding Expo. Local glass artist Wolfgang Engel can fashion a pen to mark that moment in your own unique design and colours.” The other major benefit of visiting the Expo, is the sheer quality of venues.
“For something truly special, jeweller Andrew James is now offering you the opportunity to forge your own rings in an awesome one day workshop at his Montville Jewellery Studio.” You can find out more about this unique experience on the day of the Expo.
“The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is one of Australia’s leading wedding destinations and with the abundance of unique wedding venues it is easy to see why,” smiled Shiralee. “Destination weddings have become increasingly popular in recent years, with couples opting to plan a weekend-long celebration.”
It goes without saying, you will find award-winning hairdressers and beauticians to help fashion that look, and Montville showcases a great selection of jewellery to add that special sparkle.
There are many to choose from, where couples can not only host the wedding formalities, but relax on a romantic weekend with their guest enjoying a holiday escape.
Once upon a winter wedding expo, couples are inspired to create their dream...

ARTIST PROFILE -
Kim Herringe
P
RiNTMAKiNG iS Kim’s passion. it is her respite. Add to that Kim’s love for teaching and her arts practice is a collision of these two passions.
The art of printmaking gives Kim a space of calming respite from a culture of haste and automation. “i started my printmaking practice with focused attention about seven years ago as a creative respite from a 30-ish year fast-paced commercial career in design and advertising.” Most of Kim’s commercial career was spent sitting behind a keyboard. “Now, hand printing on to quality papers, inky fingers, the smell of the inks, the process of, and holding in my hand the end product brings me enormous personal satisfaction. “Enjoying the imperfection of hand printed artwork is in stark contrast to the perfect results obtained and expected in my ‘professional’ career.” Kim loves to combine the meditative crafts of relief and intaglio printing with capturing the slower pace of life in the natural world as the subject of her work. “it is my experiences of nature and its translation through the act of hand printing that reminds me to be still and present in daily life.” And it is this process of presence and stillness that Kim shares in her printmaking workshops. Printmaking is an incredible versatile and varied art form. it has a long history of traditional techniques and an exciting future with new technologies and experimentation. “With my workshops i work to broaden the reach of the art form and demystify the process.” You can view Kim’s work at Razorback Gallery, Montville, and Peace of Green Gallery, Maleny. War on Weeds – The Winter Campaign!
i
T’S THAT TiME of year when the thermometer takes a dive and the cool winds that the Blackall Range is famous (or infamous) for, howl across the hinterland. in spite of, or perhaps because of this, i reckon now is the best time of year for getting stuck into the weeds, because once they are down, they tend to stay down (for at least the cooler months...). The key to winter weed control is, don’t bite off more than you can handle. That said, now is the perfect time for controlling lantana, because the native pioneers that the lantana has been suppressing will pop up in spring and quickly takeover - given half a chance. The key to weed control is to make sure you won’t have to control the same weeds year after year. Good bush regeneration is all about working with vegetation succession, to favour native regeneration. You don’t want to be fighting the same weeds year after year. Poor weed control often leads to the growth of more weeds and you find yourself fighting the same battle year after year, actually creating the conditions for more weed growth. Time your weed control well and hopefully you’ll be facilitating the regeneration of native flora, that within a few years will capture the site and outcompete all those weeds that

jigsaw, the pieces which provide some idea of the full picture need to be linked. However, each connecting piece has to be grown rather than being selected from the pile on the table. There are clues to help. Building out from a wetland clearly needs different species selection from adding to a patch of rainforest, eucalypt forest or heath. Each completed jigsaw will be different and add to the beauty and diversity of the local environment. Patches of remnant trees and shrubs give a clue to what might have been there before although given the clearing history, some “remnants” may in fact be 60 years of regrowth. Remnant trees deep in gullies probably are remnant trees. As the pieces of the puzzle grow and join, the picture begins to emerge and may be a little different from that seen in photos
taken in national parks, or just imagined, but nevertheless, the jigsaw is coming together, and the wildlife is moving in. What an achievement! 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Land for Wildlife program and a time to celebrate those achievements. Watch out for various events in September. in the meantime, despite the dry sunny June weather, there is still moisture in many of our soils. Barung has a terrific selection of tubestock including a few more unusual trees for those wanting additional diversity in the planting program. Flowers and fruit at different times of the year will help to keep the wildlife at your place, not forgetting their added attraction for tasty insects. Watch the aerial displays of our winter visitors, the grey fantails, as they chase flying insects above the foliage.

are suppressing the growth of native plants. Knowledge and good planning are crucial in making this difference. Working with the seasons is great, and winter is definitely the time to get on top of weeds. What’s more, after a long hard session of weed bashing (which is good for the body and soul), there nothing better than warming up by the fire and partaking in a well-earned warming beverage of your preference. There’s also that great feeling of doing something good for the world. Planting is also still an option with soil moisture being so good (you can have too much of a good thing!), that conditions are still great for establishing plants. The main concern you may have is frost, but this can also be beaten by using frosthardy stock, and there’s still plenty of variety to choose from there! Wattles, Silky oaks, Native Frangipani, Celery Wood, White Cedar and Hoop or Bunya Pine are very frost hardy and even Lillypilly’s are moderately frost hardy. For great advice on planting and bush regen come and see us at Forest Heart and see how we can help. Enjoy the winter, it’s what makes the hinterland special, and remember wood fires are sustainable heating – just plant more trees!

IRE PITS have become a central part of our outdoor living, evolving from the days of caveman and campsites (out of necessity) to a myriad of modern designs to suit each individual application. There is something primeval, mesmerising and calming watching flames in motion. Most fire pits are fuelled by wood or charcoal with some designs operating on gas. Not only is it a place to gather and chat with a drink of choice but also a means of cooking, using skewers, grill baskets, cooking grate, cast iron skillet of rotisserie.

HECK oUT the photo. This is a poor Brisbane wattle, Acacia fimbriata, suffering the fate of many trees that have an acute-angle fork that i keep banging on about. You can see why it is such a typical failure point. The split is travelling down the trunk, and at some point, will let go. Sometimes these forks fail suddenly, and sometimes they open up slowly, and just to confuse things, sometimes they last until the end of the trees life and never fail. if you notice one, at least keep an eye on it, or better still, reduce the amount of weight and leverage acting on the fork, by pruning the trunks that
form the fork. it may even be possible to prune out the bad fork by removing one of the leaders. The species in the photo, Brisbane wattle, is often used as a pioneer plant in gardens, and as a fastgrowing interplant in screens and hedges. They get up quickly, 2 metres in the first year, they are leguminous, so they fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, and they only live for about 8 years. They flower beautifully in winter and spring with masses of brilliant yellow blossom. This specimen is quite leggy but if you take the time to prune them and keep them bushy, they can look great.

iLL SHoRTEN’S DECiSioN last week was a real shock – but it was the second decision, not the first, that was the surprising one.
For years Shorten had been committing his party to limiting company tax cuts to firms worth $2 million or less. This was his position before the 2016 election and it had not changed. Labor voted against the additional cuts, and although the government parleyed them up to $50 million with the aid of some of the senate crossbenchers, the opposition’s policy had not been revised. Thus, when Shorten was asked unexpectedly if he was still determined to repeal cuts for those in the $10 million to $50 million, he replied simply: yes. No story, one might have thought – except for the press gallery, feverishly pursuing its latest whiff of a leadership dispute, any leadership dispute – party and personnel irrelevant. And of course, for The Australian, it was all shock horror. This is hardly surprising: our national daily’s default position is shock, horror, outrage, resentment, belligerence, and all were on offer for the next few days. Rupert’s minions urged Shorten to flip, to forget about his long-standing platform and give the hard-working family businesses (and anyone else who demanded it loudly enough) a tax break – and, after a hastily convened
meeting of a somewhat panicked shadow cabinet, he did just that.
There were at least 80,000 of them, and they presumably all had friends, relatives and employees.
if, and when, Labor attains government, the existing tax regime will stand; but what has not been implemented, even if it has been legislated, will still be subject to repeal.
Shorten’s throwaway line did not target them directly, but it did draw attention to the overarching policy; so it was comparatively easy to tell them that they were okay, that they could keep their money without hindrance.
This means that the cuts which came in on Sunday, as well as those already churning through the books of the smaller and medium-sized firms, are confirmed. immediate problem solved, but the cost for Shorten’s courage and credibility may be considerable. At one level the backdown was simple pragmatism. The view was that while it was fair enough to oppose and vote against the existing cuts, once they were in place, unscrambling the eggs was just too hard. The punters are rightly sceptical about Malcolm Turnbull’s long-term aspirations, the six to ten years for the bonanza he has promised. But what we are talking about now is not the pie in the sky, but the money in the bank. They were ready to complain all the way to the ballot box if any bastard tried to take it away from them. While the threat remained latent and largely unspoken it could be managed. But to hear it uttered so bluntly and abruptly spooked them. So, Shorten had to listen and he did. He flipped. The biggest problem – at least in terms of raw numbers – were at the bottom end, the $2 million to $10 million cohort.

In partnership with the Jinibara People Aboriginal Corporation (JPAC) and Goombuckar Creations, Queensland Conference and Camping Centres (QCCC) is excited to announce the establishment of the Tribalink Activity Centre at QCCC Mapleton. The Tribalink Centre is an experiential education precinct set aside for Aboriginal activities, focused on the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture and Environmental Sustainability. Operating out of an undercover auditorium capable of seating up to 200 people, Tribalink offers amazing experiences of indigenous culture and Aboriginal learning outcomes: – • Walkabout Mapleton’s pristine rainforest property and sample bushfood while learning about traditional land management techniques • Enjoy dance, didge and song through the day or under the stars at night • Immerse yourself in a traditional family setting and learn the honed survival skills from the people who have thrived on the world’s harshest continent

HiNTERLAND TiMES – JULY 2018
All activities can be offered in a grade-level appropriate way to meet aspects of the Australian National Curriculum. The Tribalink Centre is located on QCCC Mapleton’s 50-acre rainforest property at the top of the Blackall Range, one of the historic sites for the Bunya Festival, a pre-colonial gathering of Aboriginal people from many miles around for feasting, story-telling, trade and conflict resolution. Tribalink is an attempt to stay true to this legacy, using modern school-camping to achieve similar goals, and open the eyes of future generations of Australians to the rich traditions and history of local culture. QCCC Mapleton has also recently purchased a 20acre, working farm, which will be used to offer farmexperiences and for the establishment of an indigenous bush-food precinct for’ touch, taste and feel’ tours.
The next lot – those up to $50 are certainly fewer; various authoritative estimates suggest anywhere between 10.000 and 20,000. Given that there are probably very few Labor voters among them, they could be considered dispensable. But some of them – those up to $25 million – were already trousering the money and the rest were pawing at the ground. in all the circumstances, the most important of which were the looming by-elections, the safest option was to fold. The explanation – that Labor had suddenly found that the cuts to date were affordable after all but that anything further would be irresponsible – fooled nobody. it wasn’t even meant to; saving face is what you do when you eat a shit sandwich. Mathias Corman has all but patented the technique; after yet another rebuff on the full corporate tax cuts package, he just bobs up like a Belgian jumping bean, eager for more. The theory appears to be that once the by-elections are out of the way, Pauline Hanson’s fear of losing votes in Longman will bring her back to the negotiating table, where the bribe of a brand new coal-fired power station will get her and her sole remaining one National ally over the line. But even if such an economic, political and social travesty is in the pipeline, that would still leave Corman two votes short. There will need to be more backhanders. The tax cuts have become something of an obsession on both sides of the aisle. For the coalition it is all about Labor’s politics of envy, for Labor it is all about the coalition’s politics of greed. Both Turnbull and Shorten have tried to widen the debate to include such education and hospitals, but only as either a result of or an alternative to the tax cuts: our civil society is in danger of becoming a purely economic battlefield. And it is in this context that Labor’s targeting of Turnbull’s wealth is significant. The TV ads about his banking career are hardly illegitimate, in spite of the limpwristed protests of the right: our Prime Minister’s endless barrage of personal abuse and invective about Shorten’s alleged failings do not leave him a lot of high ground. And his defence – that he has worked hard to make a lot of money, just like all real aspirational Australians should – is a touch ingenuous; not a lot of other Australians start with a healthy seven-figure inheritance. Turnbull is not a candidate for a biography entitled Log Cabin to The Lodge. But he is, at least in his own terms, an unqualified success story. By making himself a role model for the aspiration of avarice he sells not only himself short, but all of us. And by playing the same game in reverse, Shorten is compounding the descent to the cess pool of greed, envy and division. Nothing will change for at least a month, until and unless the by-elections provide a circuit breaker, which, given the relative imminence of a national poll, they probably won’t. But at least they might be a distraction. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

APLEToN DoG oWNERS are anxious to have a fenced, off-leash dog park on any suitable council land in the Mapleton area where dogs can freely socialise in neutral territory. Hank Wade has decided to champion the cause and told HT, “There are many elderly people living alone with just their dog for a companion. A dog park provides them with an outing, social contact and support from other dog owners.” The dog park would therefore need to be within easy walking distance within Mapleton so elderly dog lovers can use it. “We have support from over 150 dog owners from the district so far but to gain the attention of the Sunshine Coast Council, we need more dog owners to register their interest with us. “We would be grateful for the support of those within about 40km from Mapleton. They can email us or join our Facebook group and we will keep them up-to-date about progress and any group activities.” The group email contact is mapletonneedsadogpark@gmail.com and the Facebook group is Mapleton Needs a Dog Park.

Transition home for women

VER THE last five years the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) has hosted a number of community conversations about housing and homelessness in Maleny and the surrounding area. The discussions, and subsequent research, have highlighted the plight of women with and without children who are suffering housing stress. over the past six months the Share House Maleny Project Steering Group has concluded that MNC should be supported in the development of a 12month pilot to test the need for a safe transition house for women and children, and way such a facility could operate. However, MNC cannot do this work alone. They ask that you consider joining them in this initiative by committing to provide support services; in-kind assistance; and/or financial support. Donations to the Share House Maleny Project will be tax deductible where that applies to businesses, individuals and organisations. For information please contact MNC Centre Coordinator and Community Development Worker Nooreen Harris on 07 5499 9345; or the MNC Treasurer Barry Smith on 0418 446 302.

HE SEASON OF colds and flu is upon us, and many are snuffling about the place, missing the warm weather! Dr Edwin Kruys from Ochre Health has some advice on medication at this virus-laden time, while
Marisa adds tips on breath, fluids and movement. Wendy brings her thoughts on clearing and stabilising the mind, and we have suggestions on allergies, and donating to save a life. Wishing you good health.

Children’s Vision Learning to Learn Everyone, including children, has a different style. Some visual, some auditory, some tactile sense. Some children learn quickly, others more slowly. It is well known that approximately 80% of learning comes through vision. But just because a child can see clearly at distance, e.g., the classroom whiteboard, that doesn’t mean they have good vision, especially as it relates to learning. In my experience, most children can see the whiteboard clearly with their own eyes. But that doesn’t mean they have efficient vision at near. Most learning comes within arms length like reading and using computers. If there is some obstacle in the vision at near, then learning will not be optimal. Reading and learning involve lots of visually demanding tasks and most involve having efficient internal and external eye muscles, e.g., focussing, eye movements and tracking, converging. Your child needs to have an efficient visual system at both distance and near to optimise learning. At Paul Brown Maleny Optical, we have the skill and experience to provide a full comprehensive examination of your child’s eyes and make the appropriate recommendations. So, it is in your child’s interest to have their eyes checked, allowing them to reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond. Make an appointment today. Till then, Paul Brown

U
NFoRTUNATELY iN Australia we are using antibiotics too often. As a result we have created an antibiotic resistance problem.
Shop 8, 8 Maple Street, Maleny 5435 2733
This means that some bacterial infections are becoming more difficult to treat. Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria mutate to protect themselves from an antibiotic.
Allergenic
Antibiotics only work on bacteria, not for other infections like viruses that cause colds and flu. if antibiotics are used for viral infections, the chance that bacteria becomes resistant increases and this leads to the development of superbugs or multi resistant bacteria, like ‘golden staph’. These bacteria can be transmitted to others. if you have a cold or flu, antibiotics do not help. instead, get rest, maintain fluid intake, use saline nasal sprays or drops, and paracetamol for a sore throat. A common myth is that green or yellow snot or phlegm means that we need antibiotics. To avoid spreading viruses, avoid coughing or sneezing in your hands, cover your mouth using tissues instead, throw them away after use and wash your hands.

ARENTS ARE BEiNG encouraged to feed their babies allergenic foods early to reduce the likelihood of them developing food allergies later
in life. Director of the Queensland Paediatric immunology and Allergy Service at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital Dr Jane Peake said, “Recent studies have shown that introducing common allergenic foods in the first year of life can prevent food allergy.” Remember to contact your doctor/paediatrician for medical advice beforehand. Riding the waves of change
T
HE 21ST CENTURY has had its fair share of dates for the end of the world. The beginning of 2000, the end of the Wendy Rosenfeldt Mayan Calendar, and now 2020 have all been forecast as possible endings or times of big transformation. Apocalyptic themes dominate popular culture and teenagers seem especially fascinated by alien invasions. Many religions and spiritual organisations have their own spin on the end of the world with variations of the chosen people being saved while the ignorant or non-believers perish in fire or flood. Even among those who laugh at such predictions, increasing numbers of people go through phases of stockpiling water and tinned food in case of disaster. Change is coming but how we experience these changes will depend on how stable we are inside. The mind is like an ocean, and the conscious thinking level of the mind is the like the waves on the surface of the ocean. Just because we may not experience the deeper levels of the mind doesn’t mean that they are not there. Like the depths of the ocean there is always stillness at the deepest levels of the mind. Connecting with the deepest level of our consciousness is both a refuge from the upheavals of life and the key to creating order. We can experience inner peace when we transcend the constant mental chatter of our minds but experiencing this level of life also has the effect of creating more stability in the material world. The more stable the mind, the clearer and more powerful our thinking; the more focused our thinking the more organised and
successful we are in our activity; the more directed in activity the more we achieve in life. if you are always changing your mind it just creates confusion and nothing is achieved; it is like a boss who is always giving conflicting instructions, the workers don’t know what to do and end up doing nothing. Thinking is clearest at its source before it has been filtered through all the levels of the mind complete with their memories, stresses and repressed emotions. By accessing the deepest, quietest levels of the mind, through the process of Transcending, thoughts are more powerful and comprehensive. EEG (electroencephalographic) coherence measures orderly brain functioning and is found to be naturally high in people who succeed in their chosen filed. Top athletes, accomplished musicians and CEos of companies tend to have higher levels of EEG coherence than other people. However practitioners of Transcendental Meditation are found to increase their levels of EEG coherence beyond what the high achievers were born with. Mental clarity brings with it the ability to better deal with whatever life throws at us and makes the most of the coming changes. Whether you believe that we are in a phase transition to a more positive world or that the end of the world is nigh, inner stability will allow you survive and in fact even enjoy the unfolding of the 21st century. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au
Little things can make a great difference
T
HERE ARE TWo important things we need to remember to do in winter, the first one is to breathe. Sounds simple enough, but just the action of hunching the spine a little or to tense the shoulders, to buffer against the cold, affects the amount of oxygen we take into our bodies. Good breathing practices start when the spine, shoulders and neck are relaxed and held in an upright position. Quite apart from the chilly weather, stress can also create the tendency to breathe into the upper part of the lungs rather than to take deep breaths into the diaphragm. one way to do this is to consciously, slowly, exhale as fully as you can, then soften tension in the body and let your body breathe you fully. Sometimes just being aware that you aren’t breathing fully begins the process of readjustment and the much-needed full deep breath is reinstated. Remember to let fresh air into the home, and dressing warmly, take a walk in the fresh air. Putting these simple suggestions into practice will reward you with greater levels of energy, increased mental alertness, and boost your immune system all at the same time.
The other thing that we often forget to do in winter is drink lots of fresh water. often the preference is for warm drinks, however the benefits of drinking about 1.5 litres of clean filtered water are amazing. Sometimes adding a little organic apple juice or purple grape juice to the water makes it so much easier to drink the necessary amounts. Water plays many important roles in our bodies. For example, research shows that when students drink water frequently their behaviour, concentration, moods and energy levels are much improved. Sports people know that water contributes to their peak performance and many studies show that poor hydration dramatically affects brain function. This is most noticeable in geriatric patients, and also in those with mental health challenges. one last point remember to gently and slowly stretch often. Your body needs to loosen up in winter to encourage efficient circulation. Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. Counselling Assoc.; Fellow Holistic Life Coach; Reiki Master; Fellow Aust. Remember this guide does not replace medical advice for specific injuries and if in any doubt, seek advice from Tim or Mary Bagshaw or Andrew Stewart at Maleny Physiotherapy on 5494 3911.
5. Don’t expect medicines on their own to be the answer (and know that there is no such thing as a ‘back pain’ medicine) 6. Surgery is rarely an option for low back pain 7. The back is a very strong structure 8. Exercise is safe, should not be avoided, and can be helpful 9. Don’t be a guinea pig and watch out for fake news! 10.
