W
iNter is Here and i love it. the sea shines silver in the mornings as i drive across the hinterland and the air is so fresh it makes my eyes bright and head clear. Winter energises me and a good thing too, as there is so much happening this month! For book lovers, we have the Book Farm’s Jill Morris, and a century of tennis memories on the range from Jack Wilcox. Gardeners can read about Norma McLeod and her life of flowers, whilst the entertainers amongst you will be fascinated by Margaret taylor’s career, singing with the likes of Harry secombe and Max Bygraves. there are art exhibitions popping up everywhere and not just in galleries! Health centres, restaurants, church halls and showgrounds are celebrating art during June – you’ll find them through Ht and in our What’s On section.
school holidays are looming, so we have a few suggestions on how to fill them, from bush walks to strawberry picking. there are also sensational shows and markets to meander. And finally, i would like to say a big thank you to one of our team, writer dale Jacobsen, who has crafted so many touching and beautiful stories on these pages since 2013. dale is starting a new chapter, or maybe an old one, focusing on completing two novels that have taken a back seat for too long. We wish you all the best, dale. so, grab a seat in the sunshine, have a read, and take your pick from the multitude things to visit and do this joyous June! Victoria McGuin editor

Jill Morris is a special lady. Her love of books and nature have led to a legacy of inspired children through the magic of her Book Farm and stories on conservation. Sadly (for us) this chapter is closing, but Dale Jacobsen has recorded some of Jill’s golden memories and achievements for us to enjoy before she starts on her new conservation adventure.

“sitting on a rock by the serenity of that waterfall, i formed my first poem. i had no means of writing it down so i memorised it and wrote it in the visitor’s book when we returned to the Lodge. it’s still there. “When i look back on that poem i realise it wasn’t very good but i also realise that little girl was destined to live on a Book Farm.” there are so many aspects to Jill’s life. she initially trained at the ABC, writing hundreds of scripts; producing plays. she was granted a Churchill Fellowship in 1972 to visit 14 countries studying creative activities involving children. “in 1988, i was asked by the Australian schools Commission to tour Australia to research what was needed in the way of innovative information books for children.” Carrying a tape recorder from school to school – no lightweight task in those days – Jill was able to record firsthand, children’s enthusiasm and dreams. overwhelmed by invitations to make author visits to schools around Australia from her farm at reesville, Jill hit on a novel idea. “i thought, instead of travelling to visit children, i’ll invite them to come to me.” over more than 20 years until recently, generations of children visited the wonderland that is the Book Farm. “i drew on my early poem to inspire children. it was an example of how a child can write pretty mundane poetry then go on to write books.” Jill has written more than 150 books over the years as well as publishing 45 other artists and authors. Greater Glider Productions came into being when Jill and a partner made 65 episodes of Bangotcher Junction for radio. “it was a huge success,” said Jill. “We sold it to the BBC and radio Hong Kong. i already had 60 books with big-name publishers and when the partnership broke up i moved Greater Glider into publishing.” Jill’s books have an underlying message of conservation and she is keen to provide the best writing and high quality

endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats. With only 50 left in the wild, it was a drastic situation at first. Jill was present when one young male was airlifted to begin a second colony as insurance against total extinction. “i watched Solstice being loaded into the plane and thought: what a great idea for a story!” The Wombat Who Talked to the Stars was the result. there is so much to this amazing woman that it would take a full-length book to record her achievements. But, all things come to an end eventually. A few years ago, Jill tumbled down her stairs and broke her neck. “something happened during the recovery,” she said. “i grew up. i was no longer that nine-year-old with an insatiable imagination.” then, last year, she lost richard. “You know when the time has come to take down your shingle.” in one last hurrah over two days, Jill will be giving away hundreds of copies of some of the older titles that still remain at the Book Farm. on July 6, teacher-librarians raine see and susan diplock will be on hand to advise teachers on selection of books for their grades, then on saturday, July 7 the rest will be available free, for families and the general public. i asked Jill what now? she laughed and showed me a photo of the 50-acre farm she and her family call home. “We have 33 acres to return to rainforest under a Voluntary Conservation Agreement. this will keep me busy for the rest of my life.”

ACK WiLCox FouNd tennis to be a constant companion over the years from his youth through to university. Also, whilst working in government where he found himself regularly playing tennis with thendeputy Prime Minister, doug Anthony. it was therefore almost inevitable that Jack would continue to champion tennis and its rich history once he began to write for publication. in his latest book, Jack explores the culture and local customs of the Maleny district. the time frame is the 20th century. “in the early part of the century the then remote dairy communities above ‘the ice box’ enjoyed social activities, sporting activities and intermarried to the point where everyone seemed to be related to everyone else,” Jack explained. “ it was, and still is to a large extent, a very close community.” After extensive research of newspapers and reports dating back to the late 1800s, Jack probed the memories
of many of the people whose families had been part of the tennis rollercoaster between 1908 and 2004. “in a journey covering a century in an isolated district, it is inevitable that several family names dominated and became dynasties with up to four generations being represented in tennis history,” Jack said. “Probably unique in the history of sport in Australia is the story of the Langfeldt sisters. “the Langfeldt family lived at eudlo until 1964 when they relocated to Landsborough where Norm worked as postmaster. “during the ‘60s and ‘70s the family, consisting of father Norm, son ross and three daughters − Pam, Merilyn (known as Meril) and Val − played tennis for the Palmwoods and district tennis Association and the Maleny district tennis Association. “in a remarkable sequence, the three sisters each won the ladies singles championships played at the Maleny courts: Pam won the event in 1965; Meril won in 1971; and Val in 1972. “

Jack Wilcox hones his tennis skills with his daughter, Anne Therese, in 1980
Another story to unfold comes from two Landsborough women, supported by their families, who were the outstanding family team in the 20th century. “this was in a male-dominated era,” added Jack. “dawn Wendt, the first president of a tennis club in the district, was the driving force in getting the club resurrected in 1970 after a long malaise.” Working in harness, dawn as President and secretary (Pat Collins) were responsible for keeping the Landsborough club together for the rest of the century. “As i read through the minutes, it was interesting to note that at many of the general meetings in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s only women attended.” the two women overcame significant challenges. “they met when Pat worked in the Landsborough school library and dawn had the afternoon shift as a cleaner at the school. “during the period from the early ‘60s to the late ‘80s, Pat had 14 children (seven girls and seven boys) and dawn had six. “Asked how they coped, dawn said they both had a rigid discipline where every child had a job.” during this period, Pat’s husband, Vince, was president for several years and dawn’s husband, Frank, helped out. “the two families were obviously totally focussed on tennis,” Jack said. “Coaching lessons were organised for the children, which paid off as three of them became district champion during the ‘80s – Patrick and Francis won the men’s title and suzanne the women’s.” Apart from finding time to play competition tennis dawn also represented Queensland in the Vigoro vets and played goalie in a soccer team for 13 years. “Pat’s tremendous output raising funds was incredible,” Jack shared. “in her majestic copperplate handwriting (no typewriter), she wrote hundreds of letters organising
Dawn Wendt and Pat Collins
members, farming out jobs and seeking funds. “A classic example was the demise of a local cricket club. Almost the day after the cricket club closed down, Pat was asking the ex-president of the cricket club if there were any funds freed up. “someone said it was dangerous to bump into Pat in the street. You finished up with a job.” Along with other personal accounts, Jack’s book traces the history as tennis soared to become the social hub of the district in the early half of the century − only to plummet towards the end as technology (particularly the internet and mobile phones) became a distraction, especially for the young. “Jean elder summed up the era in her book Bald Knob: ‘At a time before cars became reliable and affordable, families relied on home entertainment and local dances’.” But the most cogent comment came from Jan Humphries commenting on the demise of the Peachester club in the ‘90s, “the kids grew up and we got old.” For Jack the most rewarding aspect of the book was going down memory lane with some of the ‘golden oldies’ of the Maleny district. “When they died the lights went out and tennis as the social hub of the community died with them.” Maleny Memories: thru the lens of tennis rescued from obscurity a facet of district history which the late Jean elder says in her foreword to the book, written only days before she died: ‘has done the community a great service for which our grateful thanks are due’. Jack’s book launch will be at 10.15am on Sunday, June 17 in the Pat Daley room under the Maleny Catholic Church. Morning tea and harp music by a former champion.

Norma
The action never ceases for Witta resident Norma McLeod. If she isn’t arranging a club activity, she’s planning an event or creating something artistic. All with her passion at the heart of it – flowers.
by Victoria McGuin
N
Norma and Keith McLeod today
orMA MCLeod is a busy lady. When i visited her in Witta, the phone rang at regular intervals throughout the time i was there. Norma's husband, Keith, proved most adept at fielding the calls and passing on various messages.
it isn't surprising really, as this inspiring woman consistently gives her time, energy and ideas to the community, particularly when it comes to gardens. it all began with the Garden Club in Maleny. “We bought this land in 1993 and lived in a van while the house was built,” Norma explains. it took roughly six months to complete their home but even before they had officially moved in Norma had friends saying, 'Come and join the Garden Club in Maleny'. “We were involved in the autumn fairs, spring fairs, and the floral carpets which helped to raise money for community groups. “Back in 1953 a crop of dahlias was ruined by a bad storm and the idea came about to create a carpet of these flowers for the fair. it just became a tradition after that.”
garden market, camellia flower display, produce stalls and teas and lunches. in 1999, Norma became treasurer of the Club for three years, served on the Committee for 10 years and has been active ever since. “i've been the hostess, welcoming new members and visitors, arranged morning teas and helped with the Flower Competition. in 2015 i was made a Life Member,” she tells me. the Club is so popular they currently have 180 members, many of whom built a garden shed which houses a library in the old Witta school grounds, as a base to meet. one of the most popular events is the Flower Competition where members bring their exhibits. “We have a rose class, flower-of-the-month, native, bunch of flowers, fruit and vegetables, and an 'all else' class. Voting is done by placing marbles in cups; no collusion!” she laughs.
“this is the biggest fundraiser for us, and we distribute the proceeds to various local community groups. it's also wonderful for the region as it draws a lot of people here.” Norma has also been involved in the Floral Art Group since 2000. “With other club members we make arrangements. there used to be an Art Award run by the Anglican Church with prize money of $12,000. “Gardening on the edge was held on the corresponding weekend and our flower arrangements coincided with their paintings. one year i did a model of a lady from the neck down, all made from flowers in tasmania. “she was made from paper mache and glued with flowers and ribbon to outline her bra and corset. But i can't draw to save myself!” Keith has joined us at this point and chips in, “she comes up with some good ideas, and she knows how to keep me busy!”
in 2005, Maleny Garden Club member, Margaret Harper, initiated Gardening on the edge. A trail of hinterland gardens open to the public, together with a

Many years and children, grandchildren and great grandchildren later, the couple have become stalwarts of the Witta and Maleny community. With Keith retired, much of his time is spent supporting Norma with her various causes and events. “i have been involved with the Maleny show for 23 years,” she shares. “i was assistant flower steward, then in 2006 i became chief flower steward until 2012 when Parkinson’s caught up with me.” despite this, Norma has been decorating the stage at the Maleny show for the last 11 years. “We've built a small house on stage with 1000 tiny paper jacaranda flowers to cover the house. “Keith made a metal-frame horse for the Year of the Horse and i covered it with material and flowers. in the Year of the small Farmer, we turned him from a horse to a belted Galloway cow.” “And in the Year of the ANZACs we changed him to a donkey!” adds Keith. Norma shows me a large map of Queensland painted on calico for the 150-year celebration of Queensland. it is huge and clearly lovingly made, as is everything Norma turns her attention to. Norma’s friends Marie Hegerty helped with all stage decorating. it is unsurprising to know that in March this year, Norma won the Blackall range Zonta Club's overall award for voluntary efforts in the Maleny Garden Club, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, the Walk of remembrance and the Maleny show society, winning the Zonta Yellow rose. “i had no idea! i'd gone for drinks and nibbles with a friend. i thought i was hearing things when my name was called out. And then they asked me to draw the raffle and i drew my own ticket!” she laughs. “i was on Cloud Nine.” Norma's award is well deserved, and it is clear to me that this lovely lady is in glorious full bloom.
Norma and Keith McLeod on their wedding day
Norma and Keith have been married for over 60 years and have a slightly different account of how they met.
“it wasn't me who whistled,” protests Keith, “it was my friend!”
“i was playing netball in Brisbane,” says Norma, “and Keith was working at the service station while i waited at the bus stop. He used to whistle at me and i would snub him!”
“Anyway,” continues Norma, “i went to the Alderly Picture show one time with a girlfriend and Keith was there with a friend. it transpired that my friend married his friend, and 12 months later i married Keith.”

Maleny’s Margaret Taylor stands by her music

ArGAret tAYLor’s love affair with music began with piano lessons at the age of four. six years later she discovered a new love, horses. “My mother said, if you’re not going to practise then i’m not paying for lessons. i didn’t play the piano again until i went to college to study singing.” Born in sunderland, County durham in 1941, Margaret’s musical tendencies were influenced by her parents, soprano mother and tenor father. At the end of the war they performed the repertoire of Anne Ziegler and Webster
M
‘I have a song to sing, O! Sing me your song, O’, lyrics written by Gilbert and Sullivan aptly describe Margaret Taylor, founder and director of Maleny Singers, whose life has been full of song and musical adventures across the globe.
Booth, famous in england for their broadcasts and concerts. “Mr and Mrs Andrews introducing Julie was a big thing at that time and so, edna and Harold eales began introducing Margaret and that was how i started. “then, my parents took me to an opera. that was it! i knew i wanted to be an opera singer. the following year i auditioned for the Guildhall school of Music and drama in London. i was there from 1960-63 and was awarded the ricordi Prize for opera.” After graduating from college, Margaret joined the chorus of the d’oyly Carte opera Company in London where she sang most of the minor parts and understudied all the major soprano roles. the years that followed saw Margaret singing with sadler’s Wells opera Company and the english National opera. she sang 25 major roles before leaving in 1971 to freelance.
Margaret established London Concert Artists and performed extensively throughout the uK. Between ’74 to ’86 she was invited to sing in south Africa and europe, including the world-renowned concert hall, the royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. “in 1972 i met my future husband, Captain derek taylor, whilst performing with the royal Military Academy Band at sandhurst, which he was conducting. Nine years later i married Major derek taylor, director of Music for the Welsh Guards.” Although singing took precedence, Margaret’s love of horses never waned. After marrying derek, she rode the guard’s polo ponies trotting through Windsor Great Park delighting in the avenue of trees leading to Windsor Castle. the wind of change sought out the couple when derek’s time in the army ended. “My sister in Australia told me about an advertisement in the sydney Morning Herald. the tamworth regional Music Centre was seeking a director of Music and singing teacher. so, we flew over, had a holiday, looked at tamworth and loved it. We got the job and as they say, the rest is history.” the city of tamworth welcomed the taylors with a civic reception. “this was 1986 and we were there for 17 years. We took it from a regional music centre to a successful conservatorium of music. “i produced 35 shows and taught singing lessons to about 36 students one-on-one per week. Classwork was done at rehearsals. We’d take the operas around to places like Gunnedah and Moree.”

Moving to country Australia also gave Margaret the opportunity to indulge in her passion for horses. she joined the tamworth dressage Club and so began a new amateur career leading her to ride at the Fei (Fédération equestre internationale). it was retirement that led derek and Margaret to settle in the sunshine Coast Hinterland. “We’d only just arrived and were sitting with friends on Australia day, 2003 when one of them asked what i missed about tamworth. i said, the horses but apart from that it was our Christmas performances, which would be packed to the ceiling. “My friend then suggested i form a choir with the aim of performing the next Christmas. i agreed. A group of about 12 people came along and Maleny singers was born. “We hired people to read lessons and i directed the event held in the uniting Church. We made $500 for the Christmas appeal. since then we’ve raised about $55,000 for distribution in the local community.” in the style of a consummate performer, Margaret took up the baton when she formed an orchestra for Maleny singers in 2008. Her beloved husband derek taylor MBe, always proud of his wife’s achievements passed away later that year. “this year we’re doing Gilbert and sullivan’s Iolanthe in June and The Marriage of Figaro in November. Funds raised from the latter will go to rotary. the production will be supported by an orchestra of about 20 players primarily made up of locals from Caboolture to Noosa.” i spoke with Margaret about my unfinished business with singing due to fear. she encouraged and said, “two thirds of my singers are just like you. some people say they can’t sing because they’re tone deaf. i’ve heard these stories many times. “When i was at tamworth, my oldest student joined me when i first arrived. seventeen years later at the age of 83, he achieved his ‘A’ levels in music and, he was still singing. “Along the way, he had heart surgery so i created a cardiac dressing room also, an osteoporosis dressing room. People with new hips couldn’t climb the stairs so i had to accommodate,” reflected Margaret with a chuckle. “i teach, direct, and conduct productions and teach oneon-one students. it’s classical training. i say to them, i’ll teach you how to use your voice and what you do with it is up to you. “i’m not the kind of director who is adamant about anything. You’re here because you want to sing, you’re here because you want to perform, we love you being here, let’s have fun. “it’s not the mistakes you make, it’s how you cover them up.” expressing her love of Gilbert and sullivan and opera, this consummate artiste of 53 years concludes: “i’m a performer and i want to perform and encourage others to perform.”

FOR THE BRIDE
WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 2 in last month’s article, i discussed formalities that must appear in a Will in order for it to be a valid document. in this article i discuss matters that should appear in a Will and why. A Will should contain the following: 1. EXECUTORS: Appointment of one or more executors. the executor’s job is to carry out the wishes of the testator as these are set out in the Will. Provided that the person is aged 18 or over and does not lack mental capacity any person can be appointed to that position including a beneficiary of that Will. it is always a good idea to appoint two or more executors in case one executor should predecease the testator. 2.
GIFTS: the Will should also discuss how gifts of property are to be distributed.
3. RESIDUE: the residue means the left-over property of the testator after the testator has given away specific items of property. An example could be where the testator gives his house to a beneficiary but does not mention what is to happen with the rest of his assets such as cash and shares. if the Will contained a residue clause then these non-specific and non itemized pieces of assets will be able to be distributed. if, on the other hand, the Will did not contain a residue clause then the result would be partial intestacy. intestacy means that those items of property not specifically gifted away would have to be distributed in terms of the rules of intestacy rather than as one might imagine that the testator would have wanted. 4. ATTESTATION: the attestation of a Will states that the testator signed the Will in the presence of both witnesses. the best place for an attestation clause to appear is at the end of the Will. should the Will not contain an attestation clause and the witnesses not be found to clarify that they were both present when the testator signed the Will then it may be impossible to obtain a grant of probate of the Will.

iNGs tHAt BiNd us have long been a part of a couple’s commitment to each other. From the excitement of selecting a ring to the choosing of the most romantic way to present a ring, these are the moments upon which memories are made. the giving of a wedding band can be traced back to ancient times. Papyrus scrolls show egyptians six thousand years ago exchanged rings, placing them on the fourth finger of the left hand. Whilst evidence has established that in Ancient roman times metal rings were given to the bride, these rings were often part of the dowry. What was originally a pagan ceremony was later adopted by Christian religions. the giving of dual wedding bands was introduced by the Greek orthodox Church in the 1300s, but it is not until the last 100 years that this ceremony has become widespread. All lovers of diamond engagement rings can thank Austrian Archduke Maximilian for our modern-day tradition. in 1477 he gave his bride to be, Mary of Burgundy, a diamond-encrusted ring. Heirloom rings handed down through families may involve combining rings to create a bespoke ring to celebrate marriage and anniversaries. We are fortunate to have creative artisans in Montville who can design such a unique, meaningful piece. Nestled behind Montville’s Waterwheel you will find Laurisha Jewellery where Master Jeweller, ishkhan, has crafted some memorable rings for customers wishing to create their own commissioned piece. Laurisha Jewellery is one of the unique exhibitors at this year’s annual A Village Wedding expo set in Montville’s heritage halls and on the Village Green sunday, July 29, from 9am to 3.30pm. Couples can enjoy the delights of Montville and plan their dream wedding at this boutique Winter Wedding expo on the one day. Ishkhan, of Laurisha Jewellery, creates unique bespoke rings, visit him at Montville Village Green during the Winter Wedding Expo

The
Principal Questions Our Hinterland schools are pretty special, and some of them have relatively new principals to steer them forward. We thought it would be interesting to talk to the person at the helm and this month it’s Principal Kay Rye, from Conondale State School. 1.
How are your family with the move to this area?
My family love that i am at Conondale state school. After working away from my daughters and husband for the past two years – it is wonderful to be back together in the hinterland. My husband is very supportive. We have lived in the area for over five years and love being in this unique community. While i was away, it was great to return to the area on school holidays. there is always something to do on weekends in this great place. 2.
What do you do on your days off?
6.
What are your plans for the next year for the school? At Conondale we are very focused on maximising our students achievement in all areas of the curriculum. We are investing time in delivering the Australian Curriculum across the school with a consistent planning approach resulting in a lift in our reading results. our stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden is flourishing and we offer a holistic approach to teaching our students the benefits of being self-sufficient. We take pride in teaching our students how to grow, prepare and cook a healthy meal and we take the time to sit and eat together as a group.
i love to catch up with family and friends. i also love to explore around our local area. i love to read and always have two or three books on the go. 3.
7. What is the most rewarding part of your job? i love to be in every classroom to see the enjoyment in learning. the most rewarding part is not only being a part of a team but recognising that every student learns differently. it is a wonderful feeling to know that you have inspired students to question why.
Is this your first Principal role?
No. i have been a small school principal for the past seven years at various schools across different regions. i also worked at sunnybank Hills state school as a deputy principal which was a great experience working in a large school in Brisbane. 4.
Why did you choose to become an educator?
Conondale State
My primary school years were School Principal, wonderful. i enjoyed going to Kay Rye, enjoying school every day. i wanted to time with some of pass on my positive experiences her students to students at my school and to ensure that they enjoy their schooling and love being at school. i learn something new every day and try my hardest to ensure that every learning experience is a positive one. 5.
8. What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt along the way? every child is unique and every student has the potential to achieve success. We need to be flexible and recognise that students learn in different ways. it is a true accomplishment when a child is inspired to question what he or she has learned.
What are the strengths of the school community?
the Conondale school community works very hard to ensure our students access a quality education and that we have up to date skills and equipment to make success a reality. the staff are invested in every one of our students achieving a year’s growth. the Conondale and wider school community have been supportive and Conondale state school is a fantastic school with awesome students.
SwimSafe
9.
Did a teacher or principal inspire you when you were a student? My greatest inspiration came from an amazing music teacher – Cherie Mason. i worked alongside Mrs Mason for many years and she taught our daughters. i remember her saying to me that learning is meant to be fun and students need to know that you care. every classroom she entered, she was happy and students knew she wanted to be there. she left every lesson with each student with a smile on his or her face and an appreciation for music. she did have high expectations but instilled a belief in every student that they had potential to reach for the stars. 10. What is your motto or favourite quote? My favourite quote is from Benjamin Franklin: Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.

MtC Cronin, Vivi Mohan and Angela Gardner join robyn Nugent and Brisbanebased poet Brett dionysius for unity Water’s ‘Poetry on the Precinct’ on saturday, July 14. this is a free event hosted by returning guest, ABC radio National’s Kate evans. MtC Cronin is a highly published and awarded poet with 20 books under her belt and a slew of accolades including the C.J. dennis Prize for Poetry, the Award for innovation in Writing at the south Australian Festival Awards for Literature, and two nominations for one of North America’s most prestigious literary awards, the Pushcart Prize. delighted to be performing her poetry at this year’s festival, MtC explains, “it is lovely to be able to practice poetry ‘3d’. Poetry in the flesh is confronting and it is an amazing and enlightening realisation that we can be confronted by something as seemingly innocuous as a poem.”
Marc Kalifa | 5494 4307 | www.marckalifa.com
MtC’s daughter, poet Vivi Mohan, will also be joining the fun. For Vivi, “the best thing about Poetry on the Precinct is that it doesn’t stay on the Precinct. Last year it spilled into the streets, into the cafes and the shops…it was like a floating bubble that just couldn’t burst!”

Warlight
Welcome to Country
by Michael Ondaatje
by Marcia Langton
"In 1945 our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals." it’s World War ii in London and Nathaniel and his sister are left by their parents in the care of a mysterious and somewhat dubious figure known as the Moth. His acquaintances are unusual, varied and often rather suspicious and the two children soon arrive at the conclusion that their soft-spoken guardian is a criminal. But why would their parents leave them under the eye of such a man? Warlight is a novel of two halves - the first half concerns the adolescence of the narrator, Nathaniel. the second half has him looking back as an adult at his life at that time and trying to make sense of it, and exactly what happened to his parents. it’s a story full of those things that have made ondaatje famous, the complex non-linear narrative, the unreliability of memory and recounted events, the nature of guilt, particularly in war, where the ends may be said to justify the means.
there is a sense that many people, be they Australian or not, are keen to learn more about indigenous people of this country. While the indigenous tourism industry continues to go from strength to strength, there has never been a comprehensive travel guide – until now. Author Professor Marcia Langton offers fascinating insights into indigenous languages and customs, history, native title, art and dance, storytelling, and cultural awareness and etiquette for visitors. there is also a directory of indigenous tourism experiences, organised by state or territory, covering galleries and festivals, national parks and museums, communities that are open to visitors, as well as tours and performances. Whether you’re wanting to find out more about where you live or you’re planning a trip, this is a wonderful guide to culture and place. Beautifully produced and illustrated, it’s equally at home on the shelf or in the glove box.
Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different by Ben Brooks You’ve probably seen the Goodnight stories for rebel Girls books taking pride of place on bookshop shelves across the nation, if not the world. Well it was only a matter of time before there was one for the boys! And here it is! Packed full of super inspiring tales of boys who have made the world a better place through compassion, generosity and a big dose of self -belief. this wonderful book offers 100 snapshot biographies of boys and men who pursue their passions/interests/rights. these accessible stories range from historical figures in all fields, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Galileo Galilei, and Nelson Mandela, to contemporary figures, such as Ai Weiwei, Jamie oliver, or steve irwin. there are also individuals whose stories are more personal – dealing with gender decisions, overcoming learning or physical difficulties, or making challenging decisions. Be prepared for all the questions, ideas and rich conversations.

FEELING LIKE
oyalty R I
t’s oNe oF LiFe’s most challenging times: the death of your spouse. often it can trigger significant change in our lives – change that may appear frightening and overwhelming. Whereas once you could rely on your spouse to support you with many everyday situations, suddenly you are needing to navigate these situations alone. this can be challenging at any age, but it’s particularly difficult as we age; during a time when we are feeling a little less able and a little more vulnerable. And this was Mabel’s experience. Following the passing of her husband, Mabel was living alone in her home in Brisbane with her trusty dog when she had a fall. it was after the fall that she realised that she couldn’t manage on her own and she decided to move in with her daughter. “i knew that my daughter couldn’t move to Brisbane – her life was so full – so it made sense for me to move to live with her in the sunshine Coast Hinterland,” said Mabel. the pair were travelling along well until her daughter had to go into hospital to have an operation.
“i needed some support because my daughter, Val, was very nervous about me staying home alone in case i had another fall,” said Mabel. Val arranged for a respite stay in rangeCare in 2016 for Mabel, while she went into hospital for her surgery. “i was very apprehensive of how i’d like being at respite for four days,” said Mabel. “i had no idea what to expect.”
Mabel remembers her first visit fondly. “if i’d been royalty, i wouldn’t have been treated better. i don’t think i’ve met nicer people than all the carers; nothing is too much trouble for them. i’ve been here seven times now.” Mabel said that it isn’t only the carers who look after them. “the nursing staff from the office come over and check our medication … and the Cottage chef makes such beautiful meals – all are delicious.” overnight respite is just one of many services that rangeCare provide to people living along the Blackall range and surrounding areas. rangeCare’s full suite of services is designed to support people to remain living independently in their homes longer. To find out more about RangeCare’s services or to make a donation to support their work within the community, visit www.rangecare.com.au, or call the Flaxton office on 5445 7044.

3 Secrets about money
that will change your life! Secret #1 Rich people don't waste money Have you ever really analysed how rich people act? How they utilise their money and what they say yes and no to? It is quite interesting if you take the time to people watch a little, or better still, be in the friend or family circle of a wealthy person. If you like what someone has, and you want it, you should emulate what they do. Here are the top four things that rich people do with their money. Rich people don’t waste money. They have money, they can afford to buy or do whatever they want. What I found interesting is, they seem to be very careful. They check the restaurant bill before paying. They look at the quality of items and often
put more of them back on the shelf than they actually buy. They don’t seem to throw away as much stuff as I see average or poorer people do. Is this because they don’t buy as many ‘junk’ items as others? Rich people don’t tend to live in clutter. They often have ‘nice’ houses with a few well-placed items on display, rather than dozens of bits and pieces cluttering a buffet or hall table. They seem to stay more organised, keep books on a book shelf, and don’t seem to spend their money on piles of magazines and other bric-a-brac. Rich people have learned how to make money work for them. Often rich people didn’t start off rich. Many actually grew up in middle class or struggling families and learnt how to be money conscious. They may have learnt if you are careful with the little things the big things seem to take care of themselves. It may have been that they
learnt to avoid credit card debt and other consumer debt, they may have learned the secret of paying yourself first and saving, or perhaps stumbled on the biggest secret of all – paying off their mortgage to a point where they had equity – and using that equity to buy more property. Rich people know that using OPM (Other People’s Money) makes you money. Rarely are rich people fearful of debt. They know you can’t get wealthy– really wealthy–without it. Of the 200 richest people in Australia – approximately 190 of them made their money through property in one form or another (the richest person in Australia – a lovely lady who lives as a recluse in Sale, Victoria inherited her money – lucky her). But most are business people who have accumulated multiple properties.
Secret #2 How to set up your banking so you never have to stress or worry again Decluttering your banking and finances is the first step to getting your financial life under control. A money management plan creates harmony out of chaos. Knowing what is coming in and what is going out, allowing for the unexpected and managing to put money away for later is just one part of creating a secure and comfortable life. However, budgeting - or going on a ‘diet for money’ isn’t the right way either. In today’s world of speed and bustle – it is often difficult to find the time to stop and get your financial house in order, but the benefits are amazing should you take the time.
30
HINTERLAND TIMES – JUNE 2018
You need to declutter, and spring clean your money and banking regularly – just as your ‘seasons’ of life change – so do your banking needs. There are major differences in banking requirements for those just starting out and saving for a car, holiday or their first home to those people trying to juggle money in the middle stages of life with mortgages, kids and school fees. Banking needs are different again for those in their late forties/fifties with teenagers or empty nesters still trying to pay off their homes and start to accumulate wealth to give themselves a happy, comfortable and secure lifestyle. At Think Money we analyse where our clients are starting from, where they are trying to get to and help work out the money journey they need to take. We have programs that suit each stage in our clients lives. While there isn’t a one size fits all approach, some of the basics are usually in most of our money plans.
Here is an example of our plan for our Money Mastery stage Separation – Separating your personal banking from your investment banking. This way your income isn’t at risk of being consumed by investment costs, yet you can still invest to create wealth for your future. The right home loan – The trick the banks won’t teach you such as – why a line of credit can work better than an offset account (even though the maths seems the same). Using the banks money for free – while using your money to reduce your mortgage. This one simple step can reduce your home loan from 25 years to 7 years without reducing your lifestyle, yet 90% of people do the opposite. They let the banks have their money for free and pay them for the privilege. Having a money management plan – that means every bill has been planned and accounted for so there is never any stress or
‘short’ weeks, and your lifestyle needs are always catered for. The more organised you are with money the more money there is! Crazy but true! So, the true secret to stress free banking is to have a personalised plan to suit your stage in life and your BIG money goal. Everyone is unique – you have a different starting point, a different set of goals and dreams, of course that means you need to have your own unique money plan too.
Secret #3 The one plan you can follow without knowing anything about finance Having a Money Mentor to guide you through the process of wealth creation is the answer. You probably aren’t an expert in money, that’s ok. We can’t all be experts in everything. You are probably an expert in what you do at work, and it may seem quite simple to you – however to an outsider it is possibly daunting.

Things that go bump in the night
i
F You LiVe oN a bush block, you will inevitably hear the sounds of various critters going bump, grunt, squeal or scream in the middle of the night. For those of you who have watched one too many horror movies, these sounds might conjure up images of axe wielding, mask wearing homicidal maniacs argh… i’m even scared just talking about this stuff! the reality is however, that when the sun goes down and we move to the safety, warmth and security of our homes, many animals are just waking up and starting their day - i mean night! take for example the Mountain Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). An hour or so after the sun goes down these amazing local critters get active, searching for leaves, fruit, insects, smaller animals and pet food – practically anything really! they make a sound somewhat like a cross between a bark and a cough, which if you were really paranoid you could presume to be a potential burglar with asthma – however these guys are only a threat to your fruit trees and are such charismatic neighbours that it would be stingy not to share a little with them unfortunately i can see the stream of venomous, possum hating correspondence on its way now! A wild sound that might scare you in the middle of the night (or day for that matter) and that surprisingly comes from one of
our favourite cuddly Aussie icons, are the grunts, growls and howls that can emanate from the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). When a male koala wants to sweet talk the ladies or indicate that you are not welcome on his territory he makes a series of calls that sound like they come from some bizarre donkey/ lion hybrid. the depth of sound appears to be completely out of proportion to their size and obviously designed to carry through the forest. the howl of the dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is a sound we may be more familiar with, as it’s deeply etched in our evolutionary memory as the call of a potential predator. sometimes we can hear the call of these and “wild dogs” (Canis lupus familiaris) on the range, so watch out for your livestock. Perhaps the most disturbing of calls, if you are unfamiliar, are the screams of various animals such as the Purple swamphen (Porphyrio prorphyrio) and the feral red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). Yet again the wonder of the internet gives us the opportunity to verify and check the calls and noises that many animals make. But as always the best way to get to know your local wildlife (just don’t be tempted to feed them), is to get out there on a moonlit night, go for a stroll and familiarise yourself with the sights and sounds of your local bushland.

Perfect Planting Weather
M
ANY BAruNG MeMBers and other residents of the Blackall range come to this part of the world from elsewhere, some looking for a tree change, but mostly because it’s a great place to live. everyone has a story to tell about their adventures along the way and the questions asked are similar. How do we remove the weeds, what do we plant in their place, what is the best way to create habitat for the local wildlife? Put simply, how do we learn to live within our natural environment, rather than trying to modify/control it? What better place to start than by joining the local landcare group? Australia has amazingly varied plant communities and every region is different. there’s much to learn but many willing individuals to help us on our journey. Mistakes are made along the way, but the rewards are terrific. it does take time and it’s always best to tackle each individual task in stages.
New projects should build on older ones or adjacent to remnant vegetation. this is called reducing the edge effect. Weeds invade from exposed edges. in our case, and after 20 years, which seem to have flown by at great speed,
the early plantings are sufficiently mature to shade out the weeds. Later plantings are merging imperceptibly into the few patches of remnant vegetation, and natural regrowth is reducing the need to plant new trees and shrubs. We have found that the vine glycine, a pasture legume, is worse than the much reviled lantana, at least in our area. our planted trees are flowering and fruiting, bird numbers are increasing, and small furry creatures dig at night in the soft soil and leaf litter. Magnificent wedge tailed eagles soar on updrafts from the escarpment and diminutive white-browed scrub wrens forage in the undergrowth. Many birds keep us entertained as they splash in the water dishes and flit around our Garden for Wildlife and surrounding Land for Wildlife property. Who could ask for more?

Landscapes with LOORS LANDSCAPING Retaining Walls (choosing the right timber) NE OF THE most frequently asked questions when faced with the dilemma of using either treated pine or treated hardwood to construct a timber retaining wall is how long will it last? The answer to this question isn’t at all universal and may vary considerably depending on the particular location and exposure the wall endures during its lifetime. Generally speaking, both treated pine and treated hardwood that has been treated to a H4 standard or above (a rating which deems the timber suitable for external and in ground use) should last equally as long. This being said, the longevity of the retaining wall itself, exclusive of
... landscaping the Range for the past 26 years
natural degradation within the timber depends entirely on the quality of construction, ie; timber sizing, hole depths, drainage, fixings, quantity of unsettled backfill and post spacings etc. Key design factors as those above are essential to consider when planning a timber retaining wall and can each individually become the
making or breaking point of your wall. Keeping in mind that there are other factors to consider such as personal preference in aesthetics between the two timbers, cost and ease of use, and perhaps one of the most pivotal being the availability of quality sustainably grown timbers. Unlike pine, Hardwood is not a sustainable plantation grown timber which has made quality landscape grade hardwood increasingly harder to source. Being more cost effective and easily available, pine might seem like the best option and may just well be but don't rule out a combination of both timbers where load on the wall is a key factor.

oW, WHAt AN amazing time of year! the sky is blue, the birds are singing. i LoVe the smell of 2-stroke in the morning! Not really. Actually, battery technology has improved so much that we are not so exposed to the wonderfully carcinogenic properties petrol any more. they call this time of year chainsaw season, i suppose because people finally get respite from mowing their lawn every second day, and get a chance to cut some more ligneous vegetative matter. We start to want more sunlight now, which usually involves cutting back trees and shrubs that have exploded
during our lush growing season, and the lovely shade they gave in summer now becomes cold, damp, and undesirable. it’s a great time to carry out major structural pruning on trees, because the sap flow is low and they cope with wounding a lot better.
Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, & Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook Also excellent for checking your trees for defects, as the foliage thins out or disappears altogether, and you can easily inspect the branch structure and look for crossing limbs, broken limbs, splits, bad forks, weeping etc. that can lead to failure. As we approach the shortest day, you can get quite accurate with sun angles for determining tree heights in relation to solar panels, for example. White Cedar, Melia azedarach, is a great endemic species that is totally deciduous, to let winter light in. Go and plant one.

BursTon L
iKe tHe LeAVes of a diseased and dying tree, the one Nation senators continue to fall. After the 2016 double dissolution election (the one Malcolm turnbull called to clean fringe dwellers like one Nation out of the senate), Pauline Hanson emerged with four followers. two of them, Malcolm roberts in Queensland and rod Culleton in Western Australia, were promptly rubbed out by the High Court. roberts’s replacement, Fraser Anning, jumped ship as soon as he arrived, and Culleton’s replacement, Peter Giorgiou, arrived blinking in the sunlight with his leader last week, looking as if he was not sure where he was but wished it wasn’t there. Which leaves Brian Burston from New south Wales, but inevitably not for much longer. Burston is (or perhaps was) probably the sanest of all past and present one Nation senators, but that’s not saying much. Presumably he is just as deluded as his leader (or perhaps former leader) about climate change, Asians, Moslems, and the ABC; and he is certainly a real patsy when it comes to negotiating on tax reform. He tells us proudly that he had a handshake agreement with Matthias Corman to deliver the corporate tax cuts the Finance Minister so desperately wants legislated, and as a man of word his word he will honour his commitment. this is all very worthy, but it does not excuse his naivete in negotiating another of Pauline Hanson’s wish lists, on the basis of Corman’s robotic assurances that the fabled enterprise tax Plan would actually deliver jobs, growth and wage rises. As a small businessman himself, Burston should know the ugly reality: far from increasing employment, the tax cuts for small businesses – those under $150 million – have now been in place for more than two years and the outcome has been a paltry 0.9 percent increase in jobs, compared to the rate of 2.3 per cent across all businesses – the ones that did not get the cut. so, despite all the triumphalism over Malcolm turnbull’s million jobs, including the 400,000 in the last financial year, the corporate tax cuts had nothing to do with it, if they were not actually counter-productive. Yet again, trickle-down economics was exposed as a failure, as it has been so many times around the world. if Burston ever goes back to being a small businessman, he should be very careful about Corman bursting through the door offering unmissable bargains in gold bricks, snake oil and the deeds to the sydney Harbour Bridge.
Out and About
the answer, as has been repeatedly shown by more straightforward surveys, would be almost certainly have been no, which was not what rupert Murdoch’s propaganda unit required. so, the question became not whether but when: would you like the tax cuts implemented immediately, or in stages? of course, you may say: not at all, but that is very much the last option. What you really have to decide is whether you want them rammed home at once or eased in gradually.
unsurprisingly most said, in effect, if it has to happen, let’s get it over with. Given the phrasing of the question, it is also likely that some respondents misunderstood it to include the personal tax cuts, which they may well favour. the question assumes its answer: if pollsters wanted a different result we might ask: did you want the government to give $36 billion of tax cuts to big business including the bastard banks, or would you prefer it spent on schools, hospitals and reducing the budget? this Newspoll was not only worthless but consciously misleading, but our national daily trumpeted it as yet another exclusive by the Liberal Party’s stenographer, simon Benson. And in the process, he managed to bury the real news that not only had Malcolm turnbull lost his 33rd successive Newspoll, but the coalition had once again gone backwards. even by the abysmal standards of The Australian, this is bias and dishonesty on an extraordinary level. But apparently it helped sway Brian Burston: one more senate vote for Corman, but at the expense of irrevocably offending Pauline Hanson, who still has two of them. And in any case, Corman is still four short of the magic 39 he needs. obviously, he wants all the help Murdoch is prepared to provide – which is apparently whatever it takes, given the blitzkrieg of last week. But it may not have helped much; in parliament turnbull and his troops remained adamant that the key to success is to scream ever more loudly and incoherently about the horrors of Bill shorten – by the time the next session ends we will no doubt be hearing from Peter dutton that the opposition leader regularly shags pigs. But the media was more interested in, successively, Barnaby Joyce, Michaelia Cash and Greg Hunt, all of whom provided the usual distractions and diversions for which the turnbull government has become justly renowned. What the Newspoll actually showed was that the voters may cordially dislike shorten, but they continue to despair of turnbull’s dysfunctional coalition. And the events of last week are unlikely to make them change their minds.
The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

And while he is at it, he should surround the place with razor wire and savage guard dogs to prevent the hucksters of Newspoll setting him up for another pratfall. According to The Australian (where else?) Burston’s desertion of Hanson’s decision to reject Corman’s deal was driven at least partly by the Newspoll of the preceding Monday, which announced breathlessly that 63 per cent of all voters wanted all the company tax cuts implemented in one form or another, and 60 per cent of one Nation voters agreed with them. this result seemed simply unbelievable, and on closer inspection it was simply unbelievable, because the polling question was deliberately and deceptively skewed to produce a positive result. Newspoll did not ask: “do you support the government’s plan for a further $36 billion corporate tax cuts for businesses larger than $50 million?”

Plastic bags begone!
CHASM building first community home
LAstiC PoLLutioN has been drowning our planet. so thankfully, the plastic bag ban will take effect on July 1, with Queensland retailers no longer able to supply single-use lightweight shopping bags under 35 microns in thickness. Close to one billion plastic shopping bags are used by Queenslanders each year and it is estimated that around 16 million plastic shopping bags enter the environment. time for change. Locally, many are rising to the challenge, with the introduction of Boomerang Bags. these bags are made by volunteers from recycled and donated materials. Maleny has been championing the bags since late last year through Hang Space, and recently held a sewing bee at Montville Markets to encourage others to join in. Boomerang Bag workshops are not only environmentally sound, but they are a great way to socialise and encourage others to up-cycle. so, spread the word, and let’s replace plastic with something fantastic. Pictured is Zebbity inch sewing Boomerang Bags at Montville Market. For more information about the plastic bag ban and container refund scheme visit the website: https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/mana gement/waste

CCordiNG to a large amount of research, it appears that men tend to live about four years less than women. Men also appear to have a higher risk of dying from heart and lung disease, liver disease and suicide. the good news is that this gap in life expectancy is gradually narrowing. A way in which men can look at their personal health is by comparing it with a car. Just like we have our car serviced regularly, we need a check-up too. sometimes, the only way to find out how things are going is by having a look under the bonnet.
For example, it is good to regularly check the tyre pressure (blood pressure) and the various fluid levels (blood sugar and cholesterol). it’s also important not to overload the car. our mental health should not be ignored. We need to make sure that our tow weight is not too high. if we’re towing a lot, an extra engine checkup is always a good idea. Lastly, batteries may run flat. this happens, even in cars with high towing capacity. if you have troubles starting up in the morning, or the engine isn’t running smoothly, visit your GP. Men’s Health Week is a good time to book your annual checkup. don’t wait too long - repairs may take longer or are more expensive if you do.

o You FeeL like you are putting in all the effort in your relationship only to be rewarded by negativity and put downs? Wendy Rosenfeldt do you sometimes wonder what you are doing staying in the relationship? or are you committed but feel frustrated by the seeming inability for your partner to change? sometimes we just have to accept that relationships are not all a bed of roses. they have their ups and downs and if we are committed, we have to go through these regardless of whose fault we may think it is. if your partner has just lost their job, experienced a death in the family or is suffering from poor health mentally or physically, that’s the time they really need you. While it might be more appealing to go searching for a new exciting relationship there are other ways for you to cope. You may have a plethora of ideas to help change them and get them to be responsible for their own health and wellbeing, but if the walls are up and there is no openness from their side you can help them by looking after yourself. the better you feel, the more tolerant you will be. When we are stressed we tend to take it out on our nearest and dearest. if you can maintain a routine of good sleep, healthy meals and regular exercise you will feel stronger and more resilient in yourself. transcendental Meditation has been found to provide the support for people who are supporting others, whether it is an aging parent, a partner with Ptsd or a hormonal teenager. the deep state of relaxation gained allows you to release the build of stress and tension.
transcendental Meditation also strengthens the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that gives rise to rational thinking and moral reasoning. it acts like the filter for your mind so you don’t say the first thing that comes into your head. in situations of stress the nerve impulses bypass this area and we use a more primitive style of brain functioning, resulting in impulsive speech and behavior. regular transcending helps us to maintain the connection to the prefrontal cortex even in stressful situations and this allows us to step back from the situation and not takes it personally. if your partner or child is negative or impatient, it is easier to understand that they are having a hard day and not to react back. it is not to say you become passive and let yourself be walked over but rather that you can deal with the situation in a calm and constructive manner. the positive carry-over effect of meditation on your family members goes beyond just reacting better to other’s stress; it can actually change what’s going on inside them. When we enliven the state of unity in our own consciousness, we enliven it in the surrounding environment. studies on transcendental Meditation have shown that serotonin levels, which help to regulate our moods, have found to be higher in people who are close by the group practice of tM, even though they aren’t meditating themselves. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

Here Are tHiNGs you can do to check your health even before you visit your health practitioner. one of these is to test your underarm temperature for about a week. this test was originally created by a medical doctor. Women who are menstruating would be best to wait until their period is finished as their body temperature may fluctuate giving a false reading. the test is begun as soon as you wake up in the morning. Moving as little as possible, you reach and pick up the thermometer you would have placed beside your bed before going to sleep. it can be useful to have a thermometer that gives a little sound effect to let you know it has completed your reading. Keep a note of each morning’s readings for five days. if your temperature is consistently below 36.4 ℃ your thyroid function may be low. if it is above 37℃ then it may indicate your thyroid is overactive. it is wise to repeat the test for a few weeks to eliminate other causes, these may include widely fluctuating up and down readings, which could suggest that your adrenal glands are unstable due to fatigue or other reasons. in any case, if there is any imbalance you will no doubt benefit
from practitioner assistance which may require further testing, appropriate nutritional supplementation and perhaps dietary and or lifestyle changes. You can also begin to take notice of your tongue, the colour of it, as well as what might appear as cracks in the surface layer of your tongue can indicate digestive as well as other problems. teeth marks pressed into the sides of your tongue may be a sign that your liver isn’t happy with your care of it. A post-nasal drip may indicate low digestive integrity, or food sensitivity and often responds well to correction. Becoming aware of postural habits and correcting them can make a great difference to the body’s energy flow, and it’s remarkable how changing the posture of the mid thoracic region of the spine through gentle stretching, and even just becoming aware of and improving the way you hold your body, can make a great difference to your breathing and the way that energy flows through to your heart. HYsiotHerAPist, david Peirce, shares what kids should be doing before and after sport and what to do when injuries do happen.
Working Class Optometry Optometry, the gentle art of making something subjective, namely vision, better and more enjoyable by the objective use of sophisticated optical instruments. Hi, my name is Paul Brown and I am a new kid on the block here in Maleny, having recently purchased the Maleny Optical practice.
Warming up Arrive at the ground at least 20 minutes before play having eaten and with plenty of water on board. the team should do a dynamic warm up starting about 15 minutes before the whistle. static stretching is for after the game – Not warming up.
The learning curve has been steep. Things are now settling into a groove and I am gaining a real appreciation of the Maleny community. I am also thinking about how to communicate real optometry and what it has to offer you, especially from a health and wellbeing aspect.
Hurt on the Field Can they play on? Quite often kids need a few minutes to settle down after a tackle or kick or collision - the initial pain doesn’t always match the injury. if in doubt at all – they go off. After the game drink water, eat, and perform gentle static stretches to help the body recover. Acute injury management - ice the injured area for 10-15 minutes and then wrap with a compression bandage - use crutches, slings to help the area rest - don’t try and play on if you’re limping or can’t lift your arm! - don’t play again that weekend if you can’t fully weight bear, move through full range and feel strong enough to play - Concussions – visit https://sma.org.au/resourcesadvice/concussion
Yes , we prescribe and sell spectacles as our core skill. But we do much more than that, spending time learning about how eyes work and what happens when they don’t.
