HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 14 & 40 Spoil mum on the Hinterland
From the Editor
May 2016
What is in a name?
I
HAVE JUST found out that drongos are living breathing creatures.
It has been great to chat to some of the new business owners around - there are so many!
If I had been playing Balderdash, I would have said that a drongo was simply a term for ridicule or endearment, or guessed it was a tool or a clueless individual.
I've enjoyed reading the stories, from snails to sore knees, the "Angel of the Range" or an adored cleaner.
I would not have even speculated it is a bird. But spangled drongos exist - one flew right into my photo last week. I guess there are worse things a bird could be called, like a roughfaced shag or a bearded tit. What about a Glassy? I am sure most of the business owners and employees in the Hinterland wouldn't mind being on the receiving end of one of them.

the heart of Montville State School! Arriving at picturesque Montville State School in the morning, you will hear music filling the playground. It could be ACDC, Stevie Wonder, Adele…anything goes. The man behind this eclectic selection is Andrew Frampton, the school cleaner (and much more) cherished by children and parents across the Range, including our HT writer, Victoria McGuin.

ALK PAST THE toilet block and you may hear Mr Frampton singing some Frank Sinatra or Billy Joel as he cleans. Stroll across to the music room after school and he might be having a quick session on the drums. (“The kids think I’m good, but I’m not.”) When the weather reaches uncomfortable levels, he hooks up a sprinkler system to keep the children cool. If you lock your keys in the car, Andrew will get them out. If a child seems unhappy, he will do his utmost to put a smile on his, or her, face again. This is a man with kindness at his very core, and the love he has for Montville State School and those who pass through (including his own four boys) is endless. I recently asked a group of parents their thoughts about Andrew Frampton, and collective tears sprang up. “He is amazing,” Montville mum, Leanne Matthews, said. “He does so much for the school and he doesn’t realise how special he is to us.” “Whenever we have events he’s there, running the sausage sizzle and helping out, or putting up lights and decorations,

or dressing up to make the kids laugh!” Maddy McGuire added. One mother, Ali Constable, wrote me a paragraph on her own experiences with him, which echoes so many others I have heard. “I owe Andy a huge debt of love. He’s fully emotionally invested in the happiness and success of my children. “He greets everyone by name, knows their family circumstances, identifies their strengths and weaknesses, encourages them when they’re struggling… “He challenges them to handball, chastises them when they’re rude, comforts them when they cry… “And every child is equally significant to him. He remembers the names of children who attended the school in the 90s. He can tell you which of them went to uni, what they studied and where they’re working now. “The children are important to him forever. He’s an angel, and we adore him.” Principal, Geoff Habel, also appreciates Mr Frampton, “Andrew is a real pleasure to work with. He is a part of our school’s identity.” Born in Kent, England, Andrew was one of six children and came across as a ‘Ten Pound Pom’ on the Fairstar in 1968. “It was the best thing that ever happened to us, coming to Australia,” he told me. This positive outlook was nurtured by his late uncle, who used to say “Every morning, when I put my feet down I say, I’m going to have a good day,” – treasured words Andrew still adheres to. Growing up in Penrith, Andrew met his future wife, Sharon, who now cleans at the school with him. “I’d asked my mum to find someone to take out to the dances,” he said, “and she did! Sharon’s mum worked in the hospital with my mum, and they set us up on a date. That was it.” Andrew and Sharon moved to Montville in 1991. “I started off as a pastry cook and worked at the Montville Patisserie for a while. “One day I was walking down the street and the school principal asked if I could do some fill-in relief cleaning. The cleaner never came back, and I’m still here,” he grinned. Andrew clearly enjoys the environment. “I’ve seen some unbelievable teachers, like Greta Blowers, who was inspirational, fabulous. I tagged along for the ride. “I’ve done a few teachers’ weddings, lending them my old Vauxhall Victor to use, and last graduation day we arranged for the kids to go in the Victor and a stretch limo down to the coast.” He continued, “I’ve seen some funny sights. Twins coming to school on a donkey and riding him to class. A hare being chased by a bush turkey - the hare ran right between my legs! “Then there was a time I heard a scream and found a teacher standing on the ladies toilet, with a python on the floor. I couldn’t stop laughing, although I don’t think she found it so funny!” His personal favourite was cleaning a skirting board and having four preppies jump on his back, one yelling “It’s my birthday!” and excitedly shoving a cupcake in his face, all over his glasses. There are serious moments too. “We had an upset student who wouldn’t leave the toilet for three hours. I thought, ‘I’m not giving up’. I kept talking to him and then asked ‘what kind of pizza do you like?’ “The student answered me, so I said, ‘If you come out, we’ll make you a ham and pineapple pizza.’ He came out.” Andrew’s stories could fill a book. Fixing up donated bikes for kids, helping arrange school concerts for charities, making sandwiches for children who forget their lunch, asking the community to help parents who are doing it tough. “And they do help. People and shop owners here are very generous. And the P&C…well, it’s strong, and if that’s strong, you’ve got a good school.”
He showed me the school handball trophy he lovingly crafted. “I made this fourteen years ago. If a kid plays up, I challenge them to handball and say they can take the trophy home for a week if they win… They always win,” he winked.

ERIC ANDERSON’S
PLANT LIFE
With 576 pages, and weighing in at just under two kilos, Eric Anderson’s Plants of Central Queensland is no pocketbook. It is, in fact, the end result of 40 years of personal observation and dedication. At an intimate private launch (Eric is the sort of bloke who doesn’t like fuss) Dale Jacobsen heard the story of how the book came into being and realised it is, in fact, a story of Eric’s life.

RIC COMES TO THE world of ecology from an unusual direction. For 40 years he worked on the management of grazing lands in the beef section of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Moving to South Africa in 1974 to take up a post-graduate fellowship for three years - studying grazing land management with the University of Orange Free State - Eric came to the realisation that, in order to manage land, he needed to understand the whole ecosystem. “It was important to look at the indicator species,” explained Eric, “to know which ones indicated overgrazing and which ones told of a healthy, balanced system”. It wasn’t just plants that interested Eric: Dr Richard
Liversidge, a prominent South African ornithologist, introduced him to the wonder of the bird world. Eric returned to Australia at a time when the Birds Australia Atlas was happening. All the while Eric was working and wandering around central Queensland’s grazing lands, he took photos of plants - native and introduced - and became one of the largest (living) collectors for the Queensland Herbarium, with some 7,000 specimens submitted. “I developed a tremendous relationship with people at the herbarium, particularly its director, Dr Bob Johnson,” said Eric. “He was my mentor, and my book is dedicated to him.” A fellow researcher, who knew of Eric’s passion for plants, convinced him to think about putting his knowledge into a book that graziers could use. “I designed a ‘ute book’—one that can fit in the glove box of a ute.” The first edition of Plants of Central Queensland, published by DPI, came out in 1993. “Notice that ‘central’ was in lower case,” explained Eric. “That is because it isn’t the usual classification of Central Queensland, but the central part of the state, straddling the

“There is no botanical language used. I have set the standard at around Grade 10, so it is accessible to everyone. It does not need a glossary, although it does contain a large reference section for further detail.” Each page tells a story about a plant. There is a distribution map (an idea Eric took from the bird books), clear photos for identification and a ‘notes’ section including interesting stories about the plant. Symbols highlight various characteristics such as whether a plant is poisonous, a weed, bush tucker, medicinal plant or is useful for bees. Tropic of Capricorn; a region encompassing an area approximately 500 km north of the Tropic, 300 km south and 600 km inland from the coast. In other words, it takes in our patch in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.” However, of the thousands of plants that Eric had documented and photographed, only 240 ended up in the book. “I had all these other plants, and I thought, what am I going to do with them? Probably I should do a second volume, so I slowly started putting it together. “DPI weren’t keen to publish a second volume as they were going out of hard copy and into web-based publications.” In 2004, after 40 years with the DPI, Eric resigned and he
and his partner, Diana O’Connor (herself a keen amateur ornithologist) moved to Flaxton. “We were looking for a place with good soils to grow fruit trees and a veggie garden.” With such a strong grasp on ecological matters, it was inevitable that he joined Barung Landcare. “I had been involved in setting up a number of landcare groups in Central Queensland, so it didn’t take much persuasion for me to join the committee, which pretty much took care of the next 10 years,” laughed Eric. “For the last five years I was president, as well as acting manager for the last 18 months. Then, in 2011, I received an email from CSIRO Publishing saying they noticed my book was out of print and would like to republish it. “I said: ‘That is tremendous, but I have got something more for you! Volume 2 is sitting here waiting to be published.’ After much toing and froing, we agreed to combine volume 1 and volume 2. This rather large tome is the result.” And it is large. But the quality hardcover book is one that will withstand the heavy use that I know it will get in my house. Eric has designed the book, not as a scientific work, but as a tool.

Eileen Lovelock
‘Angel of the Range’ The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is home to many characters with rich and varied histories to share, and 90-year-old Eileen Lovelock is one such character. Having met this indefatigable lady at two Mapleton events, Victoria McGuin was keen to hear her story.

The wedding of Eileen and Ray Lovelock in Nambour, 1947

HINTERLAND TIMES – MAY 2016
ILEEN LOVELOCK cheerfully welcomes me in to her home, where her youngest son, Ted, and his partner have popped in to say hello. I can’t help but wonder if Ted is subtly checking I am ‘okay’ to stay with his mum before he leaves, which I find both endearing and wise. Settled at the kitchen table with tea, biscuits and a large scrapbook full of memorabilia, Eileen begins to tell me scattered memories from the past. Her husband, Raymond John, features heavily as she speaks, having only lost him six years ago after 63 years of marriage. “We were engaged for two years and married at 21. We met at Kureelpa Dance Hall. Ray used to ride his horse up from Nambour to see me,” she tells me. “I used to joke that he wouldn’t ride five minutes to see me now!” “Ray was into greyhound racing, boxing and football,” she continues, showing me a photo of Ray in his Nambour boxing days. “He was a handsome man.” Before this dashing chap appeared in her life, Eileen had been busy looking after her older sister’s children for a small wage. “I never had any teenage years. I came up here on a holiday to visit my sister when I was twelve, and I never went back.” Once married, the nurturing nature of Eileen continued. The Lovelock’s had four children: Wayne, Gary, Vivien and Ted; so things were never quiet, especially when they moved to a rundown farm, Eiray, adjoining Mapleton Cemetery. With Ray working as a timber cutter and away all week, Eileen would be out picking avocados and packing bananas. “We had six acres of Ladyfingers, and my eldest son and I had to pack them into boxes. I had blue fingers from whacking myself with the hammer so many times!” Next came small crops, such as beans, peas, sweet potatoes and strawberries. “In the wet season we’d still be out there, picking all those strawberries and milking the cows. I tell you what, I hope there are no cows and strawberries in heaven!”
exquisite handcrafted jeweller jewelleryy & wares from outstanding artists artists

The Lovelock family at Cotton Tree
As for transport, Eileen didn’t learn to drive until she was in her mid-40s. “When I was young we had the tram to Nambour, which picked up cream and cane and had seats for passengers. “The driver was our next door neighbour. In the morning he’d blow his horn and slow down, and I would run out alongside the tram and give him his morning tea or lunch. “When the kids were growing up I would drive them to the bus in a Fergie tractor, then pick them up from my sister’s later. Much to their embarrassment!” When Eileen finally had a car, things didn’t start so well. “I was coming down Cemetery Hill and the steering wheel came out in my hands!” she says. “The car got stuck between two trees and I climbed out and walked home. My husband came out, bolted the steering wheel back on and drove the car home.” The calamitous stories come thick and fast. “We had no power at our farm, so we used a porta gas oven. Well, I put my head in to light it and got blown five feet across the room and lost my eyebrows and eyelashes and burnt my arms. I mean, how stupid can you get?!” Then we have the wigs… “Wigs were in fashion back then. We went out for a day, and I was scrubbed up and in my nice wig and people kept staring at me. I thought, ‘I must look alright’. “Then someone told me, I had it on back to front. All the long bits where the shorts bits should be. That put me off wigs for life!” Despite the amusing adventures, Eileen has suffered much loss and sadness in her life, losing many family members and close friends over the years. She talks of her two eldest sons: Wayne, who died from motor neuron disease, and Gary, who was killed in a car accident. Her love for them is palpable and she shares stories of moments together over the years. More recently, Eileen’s best friend, Joyce Probert passed away too. “She suffered from schizophrenia at 30-years-old and had no family, so I visited her every Friday for 50 years, and took her biscuits and lollies, and took her to the beach when she was well enough.”
Bring in this AD
Eileen’s selfless nature is evident in her history, with another funny tale attached. “We had a van, with stripes down the sides, and I opened up the back and put a mattress down, and I’d take the women shopping in it. “We always dressed in our best clothes, stockings and earrings to go out. One day, I cleared out the back on the van before picking the ladies up. There was a big old battery in there, so I hoisted it onto my legs and put it on the ground. “When we arrived at Nambour, the ladies were all laughing because my stockings were round my ankles. The battery acid had chewed my stockings off!” Eileen is a joy to listen to, and I am not surprised she was recently honoured as an ‘Angel of the Range’. She is also a new patron of the Mapleton Bowls Club, “Two of the nicest things that have happened to me,” she says smiling. As I leave, Eileen Lovelock claims she is “not very interesting” to write about. I respectfully disagree – I could write about Eileen all day.

Intoxicated with her gardening love affair 20 years ago, Jenny Allan designed her permaculture property in Maleny, and over 100 gardens in the Hinterland. It “took over” her life for a time, with garden tours to run and writing a book, Smart Permaculture Design. But the initial work is now rewarding Jenny with attractive dividends.
By Jenny Allan
L
IKE MOST PEOPLE IN LOVE, I thought my gardening honeymoon would last forever. Permaculture was my life and I couldn’t imagine I would be side tracked. I was naïve. My priorities changed. First up, children. And later, life traumas, including separation. I then became a zealous bike-rider, pedaling our verdant hills three mornings a week with the Lycra Lizards. What was that about gardening? All part of the journey of life. Yet the garden was still there; it needed attention, and it just kept on producing. What should I do?
Jenny Allan’s garden in Maleny has proven to be an enduring love, and is the setting for a workshop on May 26
For the time being, I turned to minimization: the veggie patch was converted into rolling green manure crops; friends helped greatly with maintenance, and harvested the fruit open-slather. However, the remaining workload overwhelmed me, leading me to stray and look afar…. for something to solve my supposed problems. I toyed with buying a younger, slick, more handsome house….with a spectacular outlook….and lots of grass. But upon reflection, this wouldn’t solve my problems, the answer lay within.

We home deliver to Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and Flaxton. In addition to the main centres, bulk deliveries extend to the airport, resorts and tourist hotspots from Cotton Tree to Caloundra including Nambour, Palmwoods, Woombye, Hunchy, Eudlo, Reeseville, Mooloolah, Glasshouse, Beerwah, Landsborough, Conondale, Kenilworth and Witta. We now have more than 29 strategically positioned pick-up points and the number keeps climbing, with more and more businesses across the hinterland joining the HT team.
As the kids grew more independent, I grew a deeper relationship with my garden: a new level of intimacy, where I didn’t have to be in control and continue to develop it. The garden is the result of the original love affair, and like having children, it is kindling a life of its own. I just needed to trust and enjoy it. The initial huge effort friends and I put into strategic design and development is such a bonus, and with a bit of help keeps giving to me in a number of ways, some that I never even planned: ● I drive home to a lush, welcoming entrance with the overhanging large-leaved Giant Lau Lau, ferns, crows’ nests and orchids. Already I feel calmed. ● I sit back in my favourite spot with a cup of tea and watch the wildlife that has made the lake its own. I created shelving on the edges that the resident heron walks around, stalking little creatures. The bleeding heart leans over the water…the water dragons dozing on its horizontal limbs, jumping in when they feel threatened. The flitting azure kingfisher decorates the scene with darts of blue. ● The good old regular fruit trees just keep providing … the oranges, limes, bananas, mulberries, feijoas and tamarillos. ● I had planted a small cabinet timber plantation as my superannuation. I am now attached to the towering rainforest trees and won’t harvest them, but am glad I had foresight.
In my dreamlike, obsessed days I imagined the kids would be planting with me, singing gardening ditties … but no. However, at times they surprise me with their relationship with it: ● When Jasmine’s friends visit they rush to pick the native finger limes, snap them open and suck out their balls of citrus-infused caviar. ● The magical combination of miracle fruits and lemons is still a hit at school. The kids chew on a miracle fruit and then eat a lemon. The miracle fruit tricks their mouths’ sour receptors into making the lemon taste very sweet. (Warning: not to be tried before a quality glass of wine.) ● Ziggy negotiated with his agriculture teacher to bring 70 kids here for an excursion … and then asked me if that was okay! He was the Tour Guide and pointed out many things I hadn’t realized he was aware of. ● Probably the biggest benefit for the children is being close to nature and developing (sometimes unusual) empathy. Once, a python slept on our verandah for a month digesting a possum. As the nights became chillier, Ziggy was concerned the python would get cold so he filled a hot water bottle and put it next to it. He then put a pumpkin beside this, which I thought the python may have trouble consuming. However he told me this was to attract a rat for the python to readily pounce on. Twenty years on and I am delighted that I am once again appreciating how much my garden offers. If you are wondering how much effort to put into your garden now, I recommend designing well and putting in as much effort as you can. And to focus on things that will flourish for the long term, with the ability and resilience to keep on improving. And then if you do happen to become side-tracked, your faithful garden will keep on evolving, surprising you with rich experiences over time. Jenny Allen is opening her bountiful garden to the public on Thursday, May 26 for the workshop …..”Create a Garden Paradise for Wildlife”. She is running this alongside regen pioneer, Spencer Shaw. It runs from 9-12pm and includes Karen Shaw’s scrumptious bushfood morning tea with Davidson’s plum jam drops and more. The last three workshops booked out quickly, so ring soon – Maleny’s Forest Heart Nursery: 5435 2195.

HAVE TRIED SNAILS, once, a long time ago, and my memory is of a mouthful of rubbery meat with an overwhelming taste of garlic. At the time, I wondered what all the fuss was about. It turns out that what I had tried and dismissed as ‘nothing out of the ordinary’ was a poor cousin to the real taste of fresh snails.
Mary Page, co-owner of Glasshouse Gourmet Snails, explained that, to appreciate the delicate earthy flavour, they should be dropped into boiling water for just a couple of minutes, then served on a mushroom with herb butter. I could tell that this woman was passionate about her ‘babies’. Together with partner, Cliff Wilson, Mary takes the farming of these miniature livestock very seriously. Cliff said: “It’s no different from any other sort of livestock; you water them, feed them, clean out after them and keep them contained”. I expected their breeding stock to be some exotic species, but they are the common brown garden snail, Helix aspersa. The idea came when Cliff was watching a Landline programme on farming snails and kept it in the back of his mind as something he would like to do some day. One day,

Above: A touch of humour on the farm Right: Mary tending her livestock
Mary said, “Why don’t we give it a go? Cliff began researching on the internet. In 2008 they found an appropriate property with enough room at Glass House and took up a long lease with permission to do whatever they needed. “We began with 80 snails we had collected from a girlfriend’s garden and kept them in a polystyrene box on the verandah, said Mary. Before they knew it, the demand grew, as did their stock. They built a grow tunnel, collected more snails from a friend’s choko farm, then built more shadehouses. Today they have over 50,000 snails in 52 pens. Cliff explained that it is the oldest form of animal husbandry in the world. “Hippocrates bred them in pens for medical reasons. He fed them grain softened in mulled wine. “They are highly nutritious, with no cholesterol, no fat, and contain the second highest protein available (the highest is guinea pig). Their serum is farmed for pharmaceuticals and to treat burns. “The Sunshine Coast University got a government grant to study the microbiology of snails, and came up with positive results. I was intrigued about the process—how they feed and maintain them; how they prepare them for the table. Mary said, “We feed them laying mash. Cliff interjected with, “We don’t use mulled wine, I’m a modern bloke, I use a blender. Each day they clean the feeding boards and replenish the water. As I walked around the cages, I noticed a not-unpleasant earthy smell. The place was spotless. When the snails are mature, they are ‘purged’ by feeding with water alone for 5 days to make sure there is no grit. They are then bagged, boxed, and posted live to restaurants as far afield as South Australia. Last year, Glasshouse Gourmet Snails was nominated for the national Delicious Awards (From the Earth) and made it through to the finals. No mean feat, considering the competition. There is a third indispensible member of the team—Boots, a ‘designer breed’ Jack Russell cross. As with all Jack Russells, he constantly sniffs out rodents and reptiles—which is just as well, as they are the main predators of snails.

Cliff said: “Each morning, we walk around and Boots checks behind every pen. If there’s a rat or mouse, he’ll find them! “He even catches snakes, which is a bit of a worry, because he’s not as young as he used to be. He won’t touch the toads though, but he’ll let me know where they are. Cliff and Mary take pride, not just in their snails, but their whole property. “We welcome visitors who like to know more about the snails, said Mary. “We take them on a tour of the pens, then serve morning tea on the verandah. We even provide ‘tastings’ if they are interested. The verandah, complete with iron lacework railings, surrounds a reproduction country home and looks out over a stunning garden. With so much time devoted to tending the snails (and nursing, which Mary still practices), they have a full-time gardener to keep it looking its best. The property was originally owned by Bob Irwin, and his touch is evident in the landscaping. I asked Mary if they ever eat their own snails, thinking she would respond by saying something about ‘eating the profits’, but she looked at me and said: “We would never say, ‘We’ll have a feed of snails tonight’—it would be like eating your babies. THREE COURSE MEAL, different wines and conversation? Count me in! Andrew Jones from Purple Palate (above) said the Shiraz Club is held once a month: "In conjunction with a local establishment, we have Purple Palate customers come and meet the winemakers, taste a range of wines and enjoy hefty discounts. "We bring wines to people so they can discover what is out there. For around $80 they have a three course meal and range of wines and meet the winemaker. "Last month at Pomodoras on Obi, we had Allister Ashmead of Elderton Wines up and opened with an Eden Valley Chardonnay, went to a Greenock GSM, Ode to Lorraine CSM, two Shiraz: an Estate range Shiraz and a Command 2012 Shiraz (valued about $110), and an Estate Cabernet and the Ashmead Cabernet ($100 a bottle) and finished with a Golden Semillon." I thought you would need a ride home to try all of that and was told that is all organised as well! "I enjoy the evening too," explained Andrew. "We have a core group of about ten and up to 20 to 35 a night, depending on the time of year. A nice little mix on the table." As well as the Shiraz Club, Andrew also offers a Brew Crew (beer tasting), Whiskey Evenings, Wine Appreciation Nights and Winemakers up here to talk at Master Classes. On May 12, the Shiraz Club will sample Sons of Eden at Spicer's Tamarind. With their outstanding range of top quality wines, matched to culinary genius, and two-hatted chef Dan Jarrett's awesome cuisine at Spicer's Tamarind, Andrew says this is not to be missed. There are limited spots available so get in early. It starts at 6pm and everyone is seated by 6.30pm, $80 per person ($20 additional if you require a bus from Maleny/Witta). Local jobs for local kids W
HEN I SPOKE TO 15-year-old Flynn Hodgens, he was busy boning chickens. You will find him at Maleny Butchery (next to the Old Bank Café) every Monday or Tuesday learning the trade, whilst friends are back at school. Flynn is in Year 10 at Maleny High School and an apprentice through his School Based Apprenticeship Program. Business owners, Greg and Leonie Palmer say they are "very much fond of town", and that this experience with their apprentice Flynn has made them more so. Greg said, "I'm absolutely amazed how many people know Flynn - it shows the town in a family light. "Flynn came in off the street, and said, 'Is there any opportunity in the shape of a job?' I liked his attitude right from the word go." Both Flynn's parents David and Kate Woolston are well known in the district. His mum Kate Woolston describes him as "driven" with a "strong work ethic". She is proud that he organised it all. Spending a lot of his holiday time and weekends at the family dairy farm in Peachester, Flynn says he grew up around stock. He also used to help a local mobile butcher, Ernie Ferriday in the paddock. Keen on the profession, he knew they organised apprenticeships through school, "They said go for it, I just had to find a workplace." "I can’t speak highly enough of Maleny High School either, regarding their assistance to Flynn," Kate said. She said that Wade Jacobsen, Brian Wilkinson and Connie Robbins have been instrumental in supporting and guiding him through the set-up process of the apprenticeship. They have also provided him with the framework to help him manage and keep on top of his school work and the classes he misses on the two days he’s at work. "Flynn has to be responsible for making sure he doesn’t fall behind with the subjects he is taking – it’s been a great

lesson in accountability and time management for him, and so far he’s maintained his grades," Kate explained. "I will keep on at school three days a week until end of the year," said Flynn. He recommends it to other students, "If you are curious get into a workplace, it's a good idea."

"One of my mates is working with a plumber, others are at mechanics." He says he yes, does know a few people through school and livestock, and yes, a lot of people come in and say hello. He also helps out at the Maleny Show. "I'm working in the horse arena at the show, picking up jumps with all the blokes. I did it last year, and the year before that." Greg is happy to have a young, enthusiastic person to join his wife, and team members, Shaun and Kim. "I'm 66, and have been a butcher for 50 odd years. I still enjoy it." "We've been in town four years and having Flynn helped us all the more. We're really happy with him and looking forward to bringing young blood into the team." He says that Flynn has 12 months to decide on schooling or butchering for his future. If keen on the apprenticeship,
The Maleny Butchery team: Flynn Hodgens, Leonie Palmer, Shaun Cooper and Greg Palmer
he will be signed full time once he is finished Year 10. He said the school has been great to work with. "No worries - where Monday is a holiday - they let him do Wednesday as well. "So many people come in to say hello to Flynn and young girls look through the windows," he teased. Greg and Leonie wanted to work with town, and they say Flynn's school-based apprenticeship gives them more of a local 'feel'. "Maleny is where we want to be." Greg said that on having Flynn join the team, "This is the best possible outcome."

Maleny
Show
G
ET READY FOR FAMILY FUN the 79th Agricultural Show at the Maleny Showgrounds is on Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28. The Small Farmers Tent is will be about twice the size this year, due to great response from patrons after it was introduced two years ago by volunteer co-ordinator, Jess Wild. Meet your local farmers and discover how good food is grown, or be inspired to begin your own backyard farming journey. Spanning both days, Small Farmers showcases our Hinterland producers, with practical demonstrations and farmer talks and films. Kids will love the hands-on displays, as well as the opportunity to meet some fourlegged friends. New in 2016 is Mikayla Jade, an equine artist/trick rider, who will be performing on Friday May 27 only, in the main arena. She has travelled the world, working with Cirque du Soleil, and with the Australian Outback Spectacular show on the Gold Coast. Shaundar Herding School will be
providing sheepdog demonstrations and trials on both days. And no agricultural show is complete without seeing woodchoppers in action. The woodchop arena will be in full swing Saturday, May 28, from 10am! For a gold coin donation, park at the Maleny Historical Society on McCarthy Rd and take the new free shuttle bus to and from the show. Maleny Show has also been chosen as a trial show by EON Digital Labs, to have an app developed which will allow show patrons to be sent live time notifications of what’s happening when and where on the grounds. You will be able to download the free app before the show. The Cattlemen’s Bar will be the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights, with music and performances by Paul McKenna, Kelly Cork, Nellie Donovan and Gemma Kirby. Our full entertainment program is on our website, visit: www.malenyshowsociety.org.au and here you can join as a member of the show to save on entry.

Burrumbuttock
Hay Runners I
T IS HARD TO BELIEVE in our lush corner of the state, that fellow Queenslanders are still doing it tough, year after year of drought. The Burrumbuttock Hay Runners describe themselves as "just a bunch of blokes trying to help out a fellow Aussie in times of hardship". Brendan and the team have completed 11 successful hay runs since 2014 and hope to continue helping our farmers in drought affected areas. So Finbars are holding a fundraiser on Saturday May 7 to help out. Bar Manager, Richard Chivers said, "Mel, who is organising the event is a good friend she did a fundraiser on Australia Day. Mel told me about the cause and asked if Finbars would be interested. "We are a big country town and there are a lot of farmers out here - I thought it would be a good cause to get behind.” And local business has come on board helping them out with plenty of prizes. Col Finley (pictured) is No.5 on the Aria Chart right now and his band are donating their time for the Saturday night event. "The whole aim is trying to raise money for fuel. They pay for their own tyres, fork money out their own pocket for fuel for the trucks, and they have already given up so much of their time." They hope to raise $2000 for the cause. Dress up in the ‘cowboys and indians’ theme and come along for fabulous food, fun and music! The 18+ event starts at 6pm. If you contribute $20 entry, which goes straight to the Hayrunners, it increases your chances at a lucky door prize and you are eligible for ‘best dressed’ prizes. Stone and Wood, and Coopers have each donated a keg - so any profit of those beers will go to the cause. Jens' wood fired pizzas will be on from 3.30pm and she is donating $2 from every large pizza sold. For more information on the Hayrunners: www.facebook.com/Burrumbuttock-Hay-Runners-1397618033820716/

HINTERLAND TIMES – MAY 2016

E
THEL RICHARDSON AND STELLA FRANKLIN: like many female authors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, these now well-respected authors were compelled to write under a male pseudonym in order to be published. But even so, with Australia considered a literary backwater, they had to leave our shores to achieve a degree of success. Ethel Richardson—better known as Henry Handle Richardson—used the backdrop of a Ladies’ College in Melbourne to question the accepted standard of conventional ‘girls’ school stories.
Her protagonist leaves the college possessing as many rough edges as she had on her arrival, two years before. It is interesting to ponder how the book The Getting of Wisdom would have been received if it were known that ‘Henry’ was, in fact, ‘Ethel’. Stella Franklin was only 19 when she finished My Brilliant Career. Hoping to keep her gender a secret, she wrote under the name of Miles Franklin; even so, she could not find a publisher in Australia. In 1901, William Blackwood & Sons from Britain released the book, but Henry Lawson blew her cover by announcing in the introduction that “the story had been written by a girl”. Upon her death, Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (to give her full name) left provision for what became the Miles Franklin Award for the “advancement, improvement and betterment of Australian Literature”. A step forward, you would think, except that, by 2011— during the 54 years of the Miles Franklin Literary Award—

only 10 recipients had been women. I am sure Ms Franklin would have favoured a more even balance of gender in the award’s recipients. The Stella Prize, honouring her first name, grew out of discussions by a panel from Readings, an independent Melbourne bookstore, on International Women’s Day, 2011. Unlike the Miles Franklin award, the Stella would only be open to Australian women. Their bold move in setting up the award jolted the Miles Franklin Award board into paying more attention to women writers. Dr Julieanne Lamond from ANU, in Meanjin Quarterly article (2011) ‘Stella vs Miles: Women Writers and Literary Value in Australia’, addressed the issue head on: â€œâ€Ś this older association between masculinity, nationhood and genre comes into play, especially in the case of a prize so explicitly bounded by the nation as the Miles Franklin Award.â€? This year, Charlotte Wood’s gripping and controversial novel, The Natural Way of Things, was chosen as the Stella’s best book by an Australian woman in the previous 12 months. I am sure it will be a hot topic in most book clubs around Australia. The gender balance in book clubs swings towards women, and this is a book that, ultimately, empowers women.
Of course, writing is not just about winning awards. As a writer of historybased novels, I write so people can have an inside look at what Australia was like in the early 20th Century. Despite writing about such issues as unionism, politics and High Country hut restoration (all male-oriented subjects), I have not experienced any discrimination, although I am sure it still exists in some quarters. Australian female authors are very strong right now with women not only featuring more prominently in the Miles Franklin award, but also, internationally, Australian female authors are regarded very highly. Helen Garner recently won the prestigious WindhamCampbell prize for a non-fiction body of work—one of the world's richest literary honours. Recognition of Australian women writers reaches across the board, with strong female Indigenous authors such as Melissa Lucashenko and rising star Ellen Van Neerven creating a strong profile for Indigenous writing. I have a feeling that Ethel and Stella would wholeheartedly approve of this turn of events.
Celebration of Books (and Women) Maleny is coming in July, and this year, the theme will be honouring Australian women writers. Of course, the book chosen for The Big Book Club is The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood, so start reading. oRN IN WolloNgoNg, New south Wales in 1943, olga studied at the National art school for modern art, sculpture and photography. she then embarked on a teaching career with the adult education Centre. In 1976 she became a full time professional artist and had her first major exhibition in her home town, Wollongong. later that year with her then husband and two small children she s went to europe. “The very first thing we did when we arrived in spain was to purchase a sixty five foot yacht, olga told us. “For the next two years, I shared a studio in gibraltar with several other artists. When I was not painting, I cruised the Mediterranean with my family. In 1978, the Fine art guild gallery in london invited me to exhibit. The exhibition was a success so, with great regret, I decided to sell the yacht and move to london. We stayed in london for six years during which time I painted and taught art. We returned to australia in 1984. olga has participated in exhibitions in london, New york, europe and throughout australia. she has won countless awards and her paintings can be found in many important collections throughout the world including those of Queen elizabeth, Prince Philip and Prince Charles. a painting olga did of the australian War Memorial vessel ‘Krait’ now hangs in the Canberra War Museum. her paintings also hang in the Wollongong Town hall and in government house, hobart, Tasmania. “We are thrilled to have olga as our feature artist for May, said gallery owner, Tony Page. she is greatly respected by her peers and within the wider artistic community for her magical use of light. open daily from 10 to 5, Montville art gallery is located at 138 Main street, Montville, opposite the Village green. RoM TheIR FIRsT galleRy at Pee Wee Bend, on the road to Mt Nebo, in 1982, Rick everingham and his wife Desley have been handling all of his own Brisbane exhibitions, and now Maleny. Rick said, "When we returned from Italy to live, we wanted to buy a place that again had space for our own private gallery. "We rented for six months in Maleny, with me working in the garage, which was not ideal." at the last minute the old Thynne property homestead became available. apart from needing some renovation, the situation of the old stables, since converted into a twobedroom cottage, was exactly what they were looking for. "We had seen Thynne Court, the street, earlier as we have friends living there, and thought it would be a delightful location to live," Rick shared. They moved in, January 2015. "It was almost as though this house was meant to be ours as the person selling it was also named R. everingham, quite strange when you

The Bricks That Built the Houses
Everywhere I Look
Are We There Yet?
by Kate Tempest
by Helen Garner
by Dan Santat
Award-winning poet and rapper Kate Tempest's astonishing debut novel elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary in this multi generational tale set in contemporary south London. Young Londoners Becky, Harry and Leon are escaping the city in an old car with a suitcase full of stolen money. They are running from dead-end jobs, jealous boyfriends and disgruntled drug dealers. Taking us back in time, and into the heart of the capital, The Bricks that Built the Houses explores a cross-section of contemporary urban life with a powerful moral and literary microscope, exposing the everyday stories that lie behind the tired faces on the morning commute, and what happens when your best intentions don't always lead to the right decisions. Wise but never cynical, and driven by empathy and ethics, it leads us into the homes and hearts of ordinary people and their families and communities, giving us a unique perspective on how we live with and love each other.
Helen Garner is one of Australia's greatest writers. Her short nonfiction has enormous range. Spanning fifteen years of work, Everywhere I Look is a book full of unexpected moments, sudden shafts of light, piercing intuition, flashes of anger and incidental humour. It takes us from backstage at the ballet to the trial of a woman for the murder of her newborn baby. Everywhere I Look includes Garner's famous and controversial essay on the insults of age, her deeply moving tribute to her mother and extracts from her diaries. Everywhere I Look glows with insight. It is filled with the wisdom of life. ‘A rich, beautiful book by a poet of the everyday. Give it to your grandmother, give it to your tweeting girlfriend. Give it to any man or woman who understands the magic of language. It will hurl them into great gulfs of pleasure, of turmoil and understanding and joy.’—The Australian
We get it. Car rides can be boring. And when things get boring, time slows down. So much so that it might start going backward - into the time of pirates! Of princesses! Of dinosaurs! You were just trying to go to your grandmother's birthday party. But when time flies, who knows where - or when you'll end up. After reading this wildly inventive book - that even turns upside down! – you will never look at being bored the same way again. Full of Santat's rich illustrations - ranging from double-page spreads to comic-style panels, the inventive format and engrossing artwork will make kids happy to go along for the ride.

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

Preparations are in full swing to yarnbomb Maleny at Knitfest, a three-day yarn and Fibre arts Festival, on June 10-12, 2016. yarnbombing is thought to have originated in the Usa when people were looking for creative ways to use left-over yarn and unfinished projects, but it has now spread worldwide. It has since expanded in vision to include groups’ graffiti knitting and crocheting to transform sterile or cold public places. yarnbombing on such a grand scale doesn't happen
overnight. Knitfest volunteers have already started working on some of the many yarnbombing projects for next year's event. They're really excited to be able to yarnbomb the Maleny Police station and library. They've started a Dr Who Tardis theme for the Police station. They need over 80 x 8” squares alone in 'Tardis blue' to complete the project. They'll also need over 1,000 triangles to decorate the shop fronts with knitted/crocheted bunting for the event so all contributions are greatly appreciated. This is a huge community project. Knitfest's yarnbombing workshop volunteers meet every Thursday from 10.45am – 12.45pm in the Maleny library to work on their new projects, drop off their knitted or crocheted squares, diamonds, circles and triangles and teach newcomers how to knit or crochet. Workshops have just been announced for Knitfest 2016. Presenters this year are: alice spittle, arzu Unel-Cleary, Crochet Australia's lynda Tomkins, Jenai Rana hooke, Jenny Jackett, lynn hall, Marnie lee, Renate Kirkpatrick and Wild Baskets. What a fantastic line-up! There should be something for everyone. Find out more on them at www.knitfest.com.au.

Barry can incorporate innovative scatting interwoven with the unmistakable sounds of Tuva singing, with influences from [the late] Paul Pena. The Gift that Keeps on Taking
s
oMe eXoTIC gaRDeN plants are just too good to keep yourself and you can’t help but share them around the neighbourhood and bushland...Their flowers are just stunning, they’re not bothered by pests and disease and they’re so tough they pop up all by themselves and look after themselves... They are of course weeds. When released from the controls of their natural environment, where they have evolved over millennia, some plants thrive and spread rapidly in new environments. some local examples include the Broad-leaf Privet Ligustrum lucidum. a native of southern China introduced to the Blackall Range early last century as quick growing small tree, great for windbreaks and gardens, with masses of pretty perfumed flowers (they pong) and copious quantities of fruit for the local wildlife (that’s how they spread). Next is small leaf Privet Ligustrum sinense native to China and se asia, they are a world class hedging plant and can be readily clipped to shape. It was introduced to the Blackall Range early last century and again with a masses of pretty perfumed flowers (they pong even more) and copious quantities of fruit for the local wildlife (to again spread). Relatively new as weeds in our area (only over the last few decades) are Champak Michelia champaca, Kahili ginger Hedychium gardnerianum and Chinese elm Celtis sinensis.
Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral st, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193
These are just the tip of the iceberg and these examples include only some plants whose fruit are spread by birds. Chuck in the wind dispersed himalayan ash Fraxinus griffithii and Cats Claw Creeper Dolichandra unguis-cati. Then add to that mix the vegetatively spread (stem and tuber) of Madeira vine Anredera cordifolia, Inch Plant Callisia repens, and Japanese honeysuckle Lonicera japonica. The list just goes on and on and on and unfortunately, on. Many of these plants are considered enough of a threat to agriculture, amenity and the natural environment that they are registered as Class 3 Declared weeds by the state, which means they cannot be sold and should me managed on your property. however many of the plants listed (and many more) are common garden plants throughout the hinterland and they are, as we speak, spreading into your neighbouring properties and Rainforest and Bushland remnants and triffid like their green tentacles spread across the landscape, consuming all in their path (I’m not usually one for sensational dramatics – but it works in this case don’t you think?) how to solve this problem. 1) control your invasive exotics and 2) plant local native plants – it really is that simple. For advice on weed identification, management and local native plants come and see us at Forest heart.
Night Visitors
W
haT a CoNTRasT this month is to last month. The fungi have largely disappeared and the dry season seems to have arrived with slowing growth and cooler nights. Water will be a scarcer resource as small pools dry and wildlife becomes more dependent on spring fed creeks or a safe water supply in the garden. Barung has always focussed primarily on revegetation with the aim of restoring habitat for our birds and animals, reducing run-off into our waterways and contributing in many ways to the clean, green environment we all love. healthy habitat and clean water will attract wildlife, which is often nocturnal. as technology has improved and prices come down, several Barung members, and others, have purchased night vision cameras. What better way to find out who is visiting at night? Birds abound by day
wallaby hopped along the water’s edge and someone else (rear view only) checked out a rotting log. Research will be needed to find out who. During the day, honeyeaters, robins and a brown goshawk used the fallen tree as a perch and a pair of emerald doves bathed in the shallow water. Inevitably and at various times, several brush turkeys walked past.
A large possum crossing a creek but the small furry animals are mostly nocturnal creatures. one camera set up beside a small creek recently captured images of a tiny hopping mouse (as yet not identified) and a very large possum crossing the creek on a bridge created by a fallen tree. a small
as an added plus, no cats, dogs or foxes triggered the camera; at least on that occasion. setting up a camera is a really good way to find out if feral animals visit your property. Cats, whether feral or domestic, do roam and hunt at night. leave the camera in place for several nights in order to have a better chance of capturing something either as a still image or on video. Perhaps you could share a camera with your neighbours.

he gaRDeN oF Wongawilli, 19 Manley Drive, Montville opens for the first time on May 14-15 to raise money for the Fijian villages of ovalau and levuka, the original Capital, in the devastating wake of Cyclone Winston last February. sixteen years ago it was just a paddock and a steep slope covered in impenetrable lantana. With the garden now close to maturity, it is inspirational to see the photos taken of those early days and compare them with how it is today, with its well-constructed terraces. a generous mix of tropical, sub-tropical and temperate plants gives it year-round colour and interest, with more garden areas planned. Rowena Cavanagh, the owner and creator of the garden (pictured with gardener, Madhu Kazony), also lives part of the year in levuka, ovalau, and felt drawn to help those Fijians after the cyclone who are not able to access finance easily to rebuild. Copyright material will also enjoy protection under the laws of other countries who are signatories to the international treaties, of which Australia is a member. Copyright protection is provided under the Copyright Act 1968 and gives exclusive rights to license others in regard to copying the work, performing it in public, broadcasting it, publishing it and making an adaptation of the work. Rights vary according to the nature of the work. Rights for artistic works, for instance, are different to those for literary and musical works. Although making copies of copyright material can infringe exclusive rights, a certain amount of copying is permissible under the fair dealing provisions of the legislation. Copyright doesn’t protect you against independent creation of a similar work. Legal actions against infringement are complicated by the fact that a number of different copyrights may exist in some works particularly films, broadcasts and multimedia products. It can also act as a deterrent to potential infringers. Copyright is lost if the owner applies a three-dimensional artistic work industrially. In such a case, it is necessary to register the design if protection is required. The duration of copyright varies according to the nature of the work and whether or not it has been published. Depending on the material, copyright for literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works generally lasts 70 years from the year of the author’s death or from the year of first publication after the author’s death. Copyright for films and sound recordings lasts 70 years from their publication and for broadcasts, 70 years from the year in which they were made.

No picnic of an election W
e WeRe PRoMIseD drama and suspense, the start of a massive showdown in the senate over the Building and Construction Commission bill, a clash of egos leaving us wondering how and when it would end. We were hoping for some action in the house of Representatives too – the session might be rudely truncated, but both government and opposition would set the pre-election scene by belting each other with hyperbole over the atrocities of the unions and the banks respectively. and there might also have been some discussion of arthur sinodinos and his role in liberal Party funding. But in fact the parliament collapsed with barely a whimper. The aBCC bill, so critical that the entire parliament had to be recalled to debate it, was rejected, done and dusted in just nine hours. The australian’s indefatigable editor at large, Paul Kelly, tried to make yet another comparison with the events of 1975: a recalcitrant senate determined to frustrate the government’s agenda. But of course 1975 was much more than that: it was an opposition, bolstered through the replacement of a dead labor senator by an utterly unscrupulous state premier to secure the numbers to block supply, and it succeeded by an unprecedented act of a pliant governor-general, who dismissed the elected government. The anti-climax left the prime minister, after some dithering, to announce that he had the grounds for a double dissolution. There was no political or constitutional crisis; all parties, except perhaps the mindless senator steve Conroy whose comparison to the punctilious viceroy, Peter Cosgrove, to John Kerr completely misses the point: Conroy acted on the advice of his prime minister and Kerr defied it. It is hardly surprising that one of Conroy’s erstwhile colleagues, simon Crean, once remarked: “steve’s really not so bad – until you get to know him.” But on with the story, or rather the non-story. The government, in a panicky reaction to Bill shorten’s widely welcomed call for a Royal Commission on the banks,
replied with what it claimed was a ramping up of the australian securities and Investments Commission, which it said would allow it to undertake proactive investigations. It turned out that the money, which was to come from the banks themselves rather than funds that the government would previously cut, was not nearly as much as it looked. More than half of it was for capital grants to replace new equipment and the remainder, spread over three years, was woefully inadequate for what was needed for staff numbers and their foraging. But even before its money had been cut by the abbott government, asIC had proved itself to be a toothless tiger, especially where the banks were concerned; so it was entirely predictable that the banks applauded the decision, and that some of them defied the Treasurer, scott Morrison, by refusing to rule out passing their additional costs on to the long-suffering customers. somewhat belatedly, there was also a promise of more money for the Federal Police, who have so far been equally ineffective in the area.
If we are going to have an election about whether the voters hate the unions or the banks worse, there is really no contest. however Malcolm Turnbull soldiered on, and announced that there would be more emphasis on cyber-security because somebody had hacked the site of the Bureau of Meteorology – a move which shorten immediately endorsed and which the public neither knew nor cared about. Then there was the dental scheme, which looked like a hastily contrived fix which the opposition branded a hoax. It ended with Turnbull confirming what we already knew: negative gearing is off the table. Turnbull said it would protect the value of the homes of mums and dads; but while there may, perhaps, be some mums and dads eager to sell off overpriced houses in order
to purchase new overpriced houses, there are almost certainly more mums and dads who are keen to see prices fall so that their children can get into the market. at best, a dubious ploy at the start of an election. The impression was that the government, having embarked on the crash or crash through course to take the plunge for an election, was scrabbling for a convincing story for proroguing one parliament with unseemly haste, setting up a new one without an explanation for doing so (after all, it already had a double dissolution trigger – why all the fuss?) and then playing catch up to the opposition while it waits, in desperate hope, for a budget which will make it all plausible. In the meantime the senate has done its work with the aBCC, but has planted a time bomb or two; an inquiry into electoral funding in NsW and the forced inquisition of senator arthur sinodinos as part of the process – he may have escaped Mark Dreyfus but he will not be able to avoid sam Dastyari. and some fairly elementary numerological research makes it clear that after all the angst over the electoral reform process, the new senate is likely to be at least as diverse as the old one, with the consequent bafflement of Malcolm Turnbull in his search for a mandate anyone will acknowledge. and as for the election itself – it is not looking the picnic it was looking a few months ago. on the current polls, even if the government sneaks back, it may not be able to gather the numbers to pass its cherished aBCC bill through a joint sitting of parliament. There will be independent candidates to deal with – the last thing Turnbull wants is a collection of the disenchanted heckling from a gaggle of cross benchers, but he is likely to have to put up with a few of them and even to accommodate some. Turnbull may still have a master plan, but at the moment it is looking like a confusion turning into a stuff-up. The budget just might be the game changer; but given the recent performances of both Turnbull and Morrison, you wouldn’t want to put your overpriced house on it.

UST ABOUT EVERYWHERE you turn on the Hinterland, you are set with beautiful views. Recently Balmoral Lookout on the Montville Maleny Road was given a revamp and now a few more lookouts around our ridges will receive a similar treatment. Last month, Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey announced the successful sites. “The Scenic Lookout Upgrade Program was set up to help local councils revitalise existing lookouts across Queensland,” Mr Bailey said. Dulong Road Lookout will be spruced up with a huge $300,000 budget. Next door to Kanyana Park, it is a handy spot to stop off on your climb up the mountain from Nambour to Mapleton. Lookouts on local roads will be funded on a 50:50 basis in partnership with local councils, with upgrades on State roads receiving 100 per cent state funding, with the aim to boost to drive tourism in Queensland. Mr Bailey said that all up 28 lookouts will be spruced up across Queensland: “We had a great response, with 38 submissions received and I am pleased to announce 28 scenic lookouts in 25 council areas will be improved as a result of this much needed funding boost. “All sites were assessed against set criteria and prioritised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in consultation with the Department of Tourism, Major Events and Small Business.”

Nutrition with Natalie Harms Boost your immune health this winter As the cooler months roll in, so too do those bacteria and viruses that cause the common cold, the flu and other Natalie Harms winter ailments. It’s almost impossible to avoid exposure to these bugs, which makes it really important to ensure your immune system is in top shape going into winter. There are, of course, many things you can do to keep your immune system healthy and choosing fresh, whole foods is the foundation. I’ve listed below my top four food and lifestyle recommendations to embrace this winter. 1. Protein is needed for building cells including immune cells so make sure you are getting enough quality protein each day. Protein is not stored so while you are down with a bug make sure you include a small amount of easily dige igestible protein in each main meal. Homemade chicken soup or bone broth provides easily e digestible protein and loads of minerals needed for recovery frfrom ill health. 2. Immune supportive foods like ginger, citrus, garlic,
shiitake mushrooms and turmeric boost your immunity as they provide nutrients and compounds with amazing medicinal properties. For example Shiitake mushrooms contain beta-glucans which are known for their immune enhancing properties while garlic has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. 3. Gut health is critical in maintaining a strong immune system and key to this is making sure you have a healthy balance alance of friendly bacteria. Y You ou can boost your gut health by including fermented or cultured foods like natural yoghurt, sauerkraut, kefir, miso and kimchi (that contain friendly bacteria or probiotics) in your diet each day. 4. Sleep and rest is so important for preventing illness and helping the body to heal when sick. Make sure you are getting adequate sleep and when the first signs of a cold or ailment appear give your body time to heal by resting. I h hope I have h given i you some id deas for d f surviving i i winter i t this year!

Protect yourself against the flu s
UNshINe CoasT PaReNTs are being urged to vaccinate their children this flu season, with figures showing a large number of young people contracted influenza in 2015.
Children and youths under 20 years of age made up a staggering 40 per cent of all notified cases of influenza in Queensland last year, and a fifth of all influenza-related hospital admissions. Nine per cent of hospitalised children with confirmed influenza spent time in the Intensive Care Unit in 2015. sunshine Coast hospital and health service Public health Physician, Dr andrew langley, says influenza is more easily spread where large numbers of people

“The flu is actually very common in healthy children, with 10 to 40 per cent of the population infected each year and approximately one per cent of these infections resulting in hospitalisation.

In Fitness ...and in Health Can’t Lose Weight and Feeling Tired? – Here’s Why
B
eFoRe I DIsCUss the reasons why you’re overweight and fatigued, I’d like you to go over the following list of complaints and see what applies to you. ask yourself, do you: • suffer from physical fatigue, that ‘worn out’ feeling • feel mentally tired, eg the inability to concentrate • suffer from low blood sugar ie feeling jittery, agitated, moody • experience intestinal bloating and have ‘gas’ • feel sleepy after meals, especially after eating carbohydrates • have increased fat storage and weight • suffer from depression, lack of motivation or anxiety. If some or all of the above complaints apply to you, there is a very good chance that you are not tolerating the type and amount of carbohydrate you are eating and as a result, you are producing excess amounts of insulin. The insulin then converts dietary carbohydrates into fat and inhibits the burning of stored fat for energy. hence you stay overweight, your metabolism gets sluggish and you remain tired. In females especially, all this has undesired side effects on your thyroid and your menstrual cycle. so why not get this sorted out sooner rather than later. give our Centre a call, I’d love Joh n Pir ie to be able to help.

Inner Stability
o
UR eXPeRIeNCe of life is determined by our awareness or where our mind goes. If we are Wendy Rosenfeldt focused on watching the news and living and breathing all the disasters around the world our view of the world will be coloured by this. It is not just what we take in and put attention on, it is the state of our mind. on the surface agitated level of the mind our thoughts less accurately reflect the state of our world. When we feel over tired and stressed our mind produces thoughts like “I am hopeless at everything” and “no one likes me”. We may wake in the night with thoughts of despair only to find they disappear with the morning light. The mind is like the ocean. The surface level can be wild like the crashing waves in a storm but at deeper levels there can be complete stillness. If we don’t have the ability to go to deeper levels of the mind, our awareness is bound to the experience of the ups and downs of life. however when the mind is familiar with the deeper levels, it is not disturbed by change. The sense that everything is alright is maintained regardless of what is going on. like going on a rollarcoaster, we can enjoy the thrills of the ride with the underlying knowledge that we are safe because it is just a ride. The mind has the flexibility to fathom all levels of life. From Physics we understand that there are different levels to the
universe. on the general level of perception people and objects appear as separate solid forms but at the quantum level of life everything is just fluctuations of particles. at the subatomic level of nature we are all connected. Regular transcending structures familiarity of this level in our mind. We don’t lose this experience of unity even when we come out of meditation. This process doesn’t involve shutting off different levels of the mind rather we experience integration of all levels. We can be aware of the surface, diverse level, where there are boundaries to people, the environment etc. but at the same time we can be aware of the more refined level of connectedness. We expand the mind to experience the two realities. We come to experience the unity of everything present in the state in Transcendental Consciousness, along with the experience of the diversity of the changeable world. The more experience we have of this state the less we feel we are trying to keep up with life. like a spinning wheel the outside may appear to be going very fast while the hub of the wheel moves more slowly. When inner stability is attained, we feel stillness at all times even while involved in dynamic activity. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Teacher of Transcendental Meditation and a Maharishi Ayurvedic health practitioner. Decisions, decisions which one is best?
T
heRe aRe CURReNTly quite a few Documentaries available through the net that offer advice in terms of healthcare which don’t always produce the results that they are claimed to do. We seem to be told this diet is the right one for curing everything from ingrown toe nails to cancer, only to see another suggestion that equally seems to be delivered by experts that makes a totally different suggestion. sometimes after much expense we find that products highly recommended don’t work for us and so off we go searching for another miracle cure. For example lets look at the advice to eat more meat and animal products and avoid grains. When one eats according to the high meat, nuts etc, diet, then too much acid can become a problem with the result being more aches and pains and a system thats straining to process all that heavy protein. For some people a raw food diet works but for others all that fibre causes definite stomach and digestive problems. Vitamins and minerals can help to balance out deficiencies but taking too many or the wrong ones for our individual
needs can cause imbalances. health is more than just an absence of sickness, its a wonderful feeling of aliveness that keeps us going and growing. all our supplements, all our dietary protocols wont help a bit if we are holding onto anger and frustration. our energy systems wont spark us up if we don’t have enthusiasm for what we need to do. stress diverts valuable energy away from the pathways that heal and power us and instead creates confusion in our chemical balance. What we need to do is to slow down, we need to teach ourselves to tune in, to become aware of what we are really feeling, to notice what our body (not just our taste buds) seems to want or really need and to gently move away from chemicals and artificial additives. and we need to restore peace to our minds and our bodies, and then we will find that we heal and we begin to really thrive as we are meant to do. Knee replacements may not be the only answer o sTeoaRThRITIs (oa) oF The KNee joint is a common complaint in the older population. It can cause pain and loss of function, especially with things like squatting, kneeling and walking on stairs which can become increasingly difficult. Traditionally, total knee replacement has been the main treatment option for those with moderate to advanced

arthritis. Recently however, there have been some studies showing that non-operative management of knee oa can be very successful in improving oa symptoms.
a program designed by your physiotherapist involving weight-bearing training for the whole lower limb can work to subtly change the way you move. often weakness or tightness around the hip joint can have a large effect on movement patterns in the knee. This is especially the case in those with a knock-knee type of gait. This program usually requires no special equipment and will take less than 5 minutes twice a day to complete. In conjunction with taping to help unload the painful structures in the knee (pictured), this program will help to build strength and endurance in the muscles around the knee and hip to help unload the painful joint. The tape unloads the infrapatellar fat pad, which is a highly pain-sensitive structure at the front of the knee that is thought to be a large contributor to this sort of knee pain. even for patients who go on to opt for a total knee

Why Baby Wearing? There are numerous benefits to baby-wearing – in short, it makes life easier for mama (or daddy!) and baby. Baby-wearing has been an essential part of child rearing in many cultures for centuries and more recently in Western cultures as parents have come to realize its many advantages. Just a few reasons babywearing is so fabulous: • Newborns NEED to be held. Close physical contact with a caregiver has physical and physiological benefits for baby. Carriers allow a caregiver to provide baby with the physical comfort she needs while still have hands free for other activities, including playing with and caring for older children.
• An upright position is great for babies with reflux. The slight pressure on the tummy from being worn also helps with gas issues. • A colicky baby is more easily soothed when snuggled and rocked in a carrier. It is also much easier on a caregiver’s arms to have the carrier help with the holding. • Carriers can go many places more easily than a stroller: maneuvering in crowded places, walking the dog, hiking, sightseeing, and using public transportation are all made easier by using a carrier instead of a stroller. • Once baby is aware of his world, a carrier provides a better view of his surroundings. Worn babies are more easily made a part of the action.

• Even toddlers who are walking frequently want to be held. A good carrier makes it much easier to handle the weight of your growing toddler while leaving your hands free for other tasks. • Wearing is a wonderful way to soothe and comfort a sick or grumpy baby or toddler.
