Victoria McGuin recorded history with the handover of Montville Art Gallery to new owners after more than a quarter of a century and Dale Jacobsen pauses from her busy travel itinerary to share a recent adventure.
I'd like to especially thank lucky mum Belinda Pendergast for giving me the ideal image to promote Mother's Day. When asked for a photo, her son Will naturally hugged his mum and made me want to see my own boys, after spending a precious girl's weekend with my daughter.
I chatted to a remarkable mum organising a wonderful line up at the Small Farmer's Tent from Cairns, with the help of her mother and a band of volunteers! The 80th Maleny Show sounds like it is going to be a spectacular - don't miss out on the fun or the country music.
I saw plenty of gift ideas at both events, and we have many more ideas inside the pages, plus some great stories.
We also talk about what you can expect to see at the Heritage Discovery Weekend, and announce one of the gardens "on the edge".
you'll love hearing Gay Liddington's feature on the multitalented Tove Easton, and how as a mum she was touched by Maleny kindness.
The paper is off to print tomorrow. Who needs to wait until Mother's Day? I'm off to kiss my boys goodnight and receive some cuddles of my own.
Gay also travelled to Kenilworth and Maleny Memorial Hospital to interview more local legends.

Small business rewarded at Flame Hill K
AREN SHAW OF Maleny Commerce shares with us that it is time to celebrate Queensland Small Business Week from May 15 - 20, 2017. “Andrew Powell is hosting his second Glass House Small Business Awards, also known as ‘The Glassy’s’.” Voting is now open and will close on Friday May 5. The main event will be an awards gala night on Thursday May 18, which Andrew will be hosting at Flame Hill Vineyard in Montville. Tickets for the gala night will be available for purchase shortly, for businesses and employees who have been nominated. Due to limited numbers, each nomination will be able to purchase two tickets only. “The award structure will be the same as last year,” explains Karen, “and will be broken into six regions – Glasshouse, Maleny, Caboolture, Montville, Palmwoods and the D’Aguilar area. In each region, people can vote for their ‘Business of the year’ and their ‘Employee of the year’. “On the awards night Andrew will also announce the ‘Peer Recognition’ awards – the Silver Glassy – and of
course, the overall winners – the Gold Glassy. “We would like to encourage all our local small businesses to be involved in this event.” Andrew Powell MP is looking forward to launching his second annual Glass House Small Business Awards, believing tight knit communities only survive on the back of small business. “In Glass House we are fortunate to have over 20 unique townships and each one of these has a varying amount of small family-owned businesses that survive solely on the support of their local community. “Because I understand how tough they do it, I initially created these awards as a way to publicly recognise their service and give them some much needed promotion. The awards also acknowledge employees who offer exceptional service. “At the Gala Awards dinner a selection of shortlisted businesses and employees will be profiled and celebrated for their efforts in our region. “I will again have the assistance of a panel from Chamber of Commerce and Business Association
representatives within the electorate to determine the award winners. “I know that each of you would have at least one experience where you have shopped locally and received excellent customer service, so why not seize the opportunity to publicly thank and recognise that small business or staff member and submit your vote.” Vote until May 5 at the website: http://www.andrewpowell.com.au/2017-small-businessawards/

Kenilworth captures
Movie Magic CinemaWorks at Kenilworth is a place that preserves the past for the future. Kev Franzi, owner and custodian of CinemaWorks spent 72 years in the film industry, including editing Homicide and working for Joh Bjelke Petersen. The 2011 Sunshine Coast Senior Citizen of the Year’s career as a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker led him to celebrate and showcase the works of Australian filmmakers.

“I
STARTED OFF AS a young man with the Department of Information, Films Division at the end of the war. I worked with a lot of famous moviemakers who captured the Second World War and beyond. This gave me a very good grounding in Australian documentary film. “At CinemaWorks we feature the stories of what Australians have achieved over the last century. “Documentaries are neglected in Australia. We have this amazing heritage that few people get to see and it’s not celebrated the way it should be.”
The dream of creating an Australian Image Hall of Fame has been with Kev Franzi for the past 20 years, and has now come to fruition. “I have a massive collection of 35mm and 16mm film that is now transferred to digital format often with improved quality. “My focus is also on the craftsmanship of the people who made the films. It’s important to tell the stories of those achievements or they will be forgotten. “A brilliant little Australian film called The Picture Show Man perfectly captures the atmosphere in the late 1920s. Suddenly the whole industry was thrown into chaos because of the introduction of talking pictures.

“Sound had arrived and if you couldn’t buy a sound plant, you were in big trouble. Many Aussies couldn’t afford to buy the ‘you beaut’ British or American talking systems so they built their own. “I worked for 13 different production companies. Every one of them had somebody who had a lathe and was making some piece of vital equipment,” said Kev pointing to a homemade animation stand built under a house in Norman Park by a motor mechanic. He referred to it as a brilliant piece of precision engineering. “I learnt enough to be able to make a fully working replica of an 1895 model Lumière Cinématographe, the first practical motion picture system. It was a camera, a printer to make positive prints from the negative, and a projector all in one. It could be taken anywhere in the world and used for making and showing motion picture films. “The history of Australian film goes back to 1896. The first surviving film is the Melbourne Cup of that year. It was shot and then presented to the public on a Lumière Cinématographe.” As I sat opposite the consummate film historian I was in awe of the fact that I was in the presence of a living treasure. Kev showed me his first camera, a 1917 Best Pocket Kodak given to him by his father when he left school at the age of 14. When the young man began work in the film industry he soon discovered he could use his camera to tell a story. “I just loved the possibility of what I could do with my little camera. I could photograph the world, my world…and I did. “I went out with my uncle who drove a milk tanker to Gippsland every day. The story was called ‘Milk Every Morning – from the Cow to the Consumer’. It paid off handsomely. “I was working in the film industry but film was so expensive it was beyond my reach. However, I used the
He said, “In capturing the Australian image, we also captured the Australian spirit and that’s what it’s all about. “This is my most exciting project yet. techniques to capture the stories on my camera. I still have some of those pictures,” Kev reminisced. My visit to the CinemaWorks theatre was an experience of being immersed in history. I sat in a velvet covered chair from Brisbane’s Wintergarden Theatre which closed in 1973. The red patterned carpet is also a remnant of theatre history. “The seats with rattan backing are from the back-stalls of the Regent Theatre in Brisbane. When they refurbished we scored more seats and so we’ve got the old and the new Regent seats. “We can seat 45 at the moment or 55 with an extra row in front,” said Kev. There was a time up until ten years ago when coach groups were entertained in Kev Franzi’s Movie Museum and Electric Theatre. More recently local groups came regularly to see the old films and then it was time for refurbishment. The outdoor section was expanded to make an alcove for displays. New carpet, repainted sections of walls and additional displays complete the makeover. “We have a new show, Moments, Memories and Magic that runs for two hours. It’s been very well received. “So, we have one successful show ready to go but the one I want to feature, is Capturing the Australian Image – Past, Present and Future. “This is what I’ve been dreaming about for half a lifetime and it’s just all fallen into place. I realised that everything was encapsulated in telling the story of the Australian image. “We finish the program by talking about the future, illustrated with the digital camera. I encourage people to start telling their stories creating a capsule of visual history.” Kev Franzi’s motto is: To entertain, to inform and inspire.

ORN IN CROWS NEST, Kay’s family settled in Maleny when she was a child. Her schooling took her through to Grade 8 but it was not a place of happy memories. “I hated school and would have left in Grade 1 if I could have,” she said vehemently. Kay was married and had her first child when she discovered her love of cooking. She decided to enter her cakes in the Maleny Show. “I used to stay up until all hours at night cooking and wrapping cakes ready for the show. I entered in every section and did very well with awards,” she reflected. Kay’s interest and enjoyment in her home kitchen led her to apply for a position at the local hospital. On April 6, 1977, she began her new career. “We were called Domestics in those days. you had to be multi skilled because we did a mix of jobs like cooking as well as ward work.”

Ten years after Kay began at the hospital which was where the Ambulance Station is now situated, another was built across the road. The transition from old to new took place in September, 1987. It was time of mixed emotions. “I loved it there, it was a lovely old building. Moving over the road was exciting but very busy. We carted all the stuff across on trolleys, daytime and night time.” Kay talked about how her duties have changed over the years and the title of Domestic is no longer used. They are now known as Operational Officers who mainly work in the wards serving meals and cleaning the 25-bed hospital. “I love interacting with the patients. you’ve got to put yourself in their shoes. That’s what we get paid for, to be caring and kind. That’s the bottom line.” Diminutive in stature but big in spirit, Kay speaks glowingly of her workmates. “We’ve got such a great team. We’re all so closely knitted. We get on fabulously and that’s why you keep going back, don’t you? “There’s never a day goes by when I don’t want to be at work. It’s a very caring place.” Kay Miller’s 70th birthday was celebrated at the Witta Recreational Club. “My girls Jody and Amanda gave me a party. About 80 people came including husband Barry Miller and my mum Dulice Sperling who is 91. The kids had a jumping castle - it was a perfect day. you couldn’t have asked for anything nicer. “Family is everything to me. I have six grandchildren and I just live for them.”
Apart from time with grandchildren and full time work, Kay loves to play cards. “Our favourite lunch time hobby at work is playing Euchre. We play four at a time. Usually there’s three of us on the kitchen and so we get a ‘wardy’ out to make up the four.” During my time at the hospital morning tea I was surrounded by a group of willing storytellers. While Kay Miller tends to ‘keep her cards close to her chest’, her workmates were more forthcoming. Margie Martin, friend, card player and colleague of 35 years shared, “Kay is a real character. “years ago, we used to have work parties. Kay is a really good cook and would sometimes make lamingtons. Being a bit of a practical joker she couldn’t help herself but put a couple of fake ones on the plate. She would cut some sponge rubber into blocks then coat them with chocolate icing and coconut for the unwary.” Tony, a wardsman and often seconded card player showed his hand by throwing in a few comments about the game. “When I came to work here they didn’t say what’s your experience or where are you from, they asked if I could play cards! It seems like there’s been a 30-year Euchre game going on here.” There were no sponge rubber lamingtons on the table overflowing with all manner of treats. However, the gathering overflowed with love and admiration for Kay. Glennis McAlpine, Acting Director of Nursing spoke highly of Kay Miller and her service to the hospital, then presented her with a large, plain paper wrapped box. It seemed to emanate sounds of a puppy. The look on Kay’s face was one of disbelief while surrounded by laughter from onlookers. Kay placed the box on the floor, kneeled and
unwrapped it with the assistance of her three-year old grandson, Jake Rook. Much to Kay’s delight the box revealed a photobook, a catalogue of memories. I was later told that a previous employee had been given a puppy on her retirement last year. Kay had remarked that they’d better not ever give her a pet to take home. The barking that was heard was in fact made by a toy dog which when passed to Kay, she quickly handed on to her grandson. It seems that the joker had been trumped. Before departing I ventured to pose the question of retirement to Kay Miller. “Definitely not!” Her response was adamant and so I left wondering if she’ll be ready for that puppy at her 50-year celebration.

Horses and Heritage ... be transported to life as it was
May 6 and 7 will see Maleny’s three heritage organisations, Fairview, the Pioneer Village and (for the first time) the Beersheba Living Museum are opening their doors to visitors – to celebrate the “Discovery Weekend” happening right across the Sunshine Coast. And what important part of early pioneer life do the three venues share – our relationship with the horse….

HE BUSTLING MAIN STREET of Maleny today is full of the vehicles we so depend upon. But the first motor car only arrived in Maleny in 1913 – until then, and long afterwards, horses were an integral and vital part of daily life. In 1880 a track linking Landsborough and Maleny was cut, with only two methods of transport; either by foot or horse. One can only imagine the challenges faced by the early pioneers, living in such a rugged bush environment with only themselves and their horses to help carve out an existence. Soil had to be tilled for crops, dairymen transported their cream to the Maleny Butter Factory and children rode to school. Once trees had been felled and slabbed
they had to be hauled out of the bush to a site where a home was to be built, no doubt a chore undertaken by all the family. A visit to Pattemore House will reward you with a fascinating display about how the four Pattemore brothers built a farmhouse for their parents in 1907 called “Fairview”, from the white beech timber around them, and the tools they used. The home stands today, proud and strong as ever thanks to their skills. In those days of settlement, children learnt about horses from a very young age and were expected to work hard for the benefit of the family. Family and working life from these times will be on show at Maleny Historical Society’s Pioneer Village, with Priscilla Cottage, Lawley House, Pauline’s Shed and

The Men’s Shed open for inspection. Over the last two years, the Blacksmith’s Shop was also built by members of the Men’s Shed. Come and see the Smithy at work! The shop is well equipped and includes the original equipment from Samuel Jones’s blacksmith’s shop at Condamine, his “Bull Frog Bells”. Samuel invented and made these particular-shaped animal bells in the late 1860s, until he retired in 1912. The Maleny Historical Society obtained them and they’ll be on display at their “Pioneer Day” (May 7 only). Early travel through this rugged region required good horsemanship skills, and it was not unusual for teenage members of the family to undertake long trips through the bush to bring in additional horses or supplies. This ability to be self-reliant under adverse conditions, coupled with excellent bushman skills, is what forged the legend that is known today as the Australian Light Horse. The Light Horse Brigade served in the second Boer War and World War I and were considered a hybrid between the cavalry and the infantry. Many troopers came from the hinterland. One was Norman Alcorn, who settled in Maleny as a young single farmer around 1907. He enlisted in the 14 Reinforced 2nd LHR in October 1915 as a 23 year old, returning after his war service to his brother John's Maleny farm, becoming the youngest director of the Maleny Co-op Butter Factory. Brian Rickaby, a member of Friends of Pattemore House, recalls that his grandfather, Ben Rickaby, operated a saddlery shop in Maleny from 1918 to 1946, providing an essential town service. Ben was also a frequent prizewinner with his horses at the Maleny Show in the 1920s and ‘30s. Ben’s son Ron was involved in horse racing, held at the Show Grounds. Horse racing was an intermittent sport in Maleny, with clubs formed in 1914, 1926 and 1931, though none were very long-lived.
Above left: Before cars were the main mode of transport, here's Phyllis, Marge and Isabella Bryce outside where the Maleny Newsagency is today Above right: Children learnt about horses from a very young age, this photo was entitled "Ready for school on "Old Dick"
Ron worked in his father’s shop for a while, and like many young horsemen of the time, joined the Maleny Troop 2nd Light Horse Regiment, winning the “Best Turned Out Man” award at the Troop's first military sports event at the Maleny Show Grounds in April 1926. Today Maleny’s popular 5th Light Horse Regiment reenactment riders, and their new home and museum serve to commemorate the young men and their four-legged comrades who rode nearly 100 years ago. Their Beersheba Living Museum of the 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop will be open to the public for the first time on the Discovery Weekend, where you’ll be able to see the developing displays inside the museum. The troopers of Maleny’s 5th Light Horse Regiment and their mounts will also be demonstrating what it takes to properly kit both rider and horse.

EOPLE OF THE HINTERLAND know Tove as their local solicitor at Easton Lawyers in Maleny, community member and friend. However, as her story unfolded, a multi-faceted diamond revealed itself. “I learnt to read music before I could read letters. The written language of music was my first language,” said Tove, now first violinist with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra. Born in Bergen, Norway into a musical family, Tove’s young mind absorbed the composition. At the age of four she learnt to play the recorder. Five, the piano and a couple of years later the violin. “I’ve played as long as I can remember. Music has always been part of my life. “My Norwegian grandfather was a professional violinist
and Danish grandmother a professional pianist and organist. “My parents, both academics, were musical. Mum was an accomplished singer. She would drag us kids off to rehearsals and I would read the score for the orchestra and conduct for fun while my brothers played with their cars under the pew. “We didn’t have television by choice. On weekends in winter, Mum and Dad would read to us in front of the fireplace. We were always learning. Favourites were the works of Tolkien.” Educated at a Steiner school, Tove completed year 12 and began university in Norway. She then spent six months at the University of Cambridge in the UK learning proficiency in English an entry requirement. At the age of 20, Tove visited a cousin in Toowoomba. It was there she met her future husband Kim, an eighth generation Australian. They were married in Norway where the bride wore the traditional costume. Settling into Queensland life and unsure of professional direction, Tove began a Bachelor of Business with a Marketing and Human Resource double major at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). The English language hampered Tove’s path but with dogged determination she forged ahead. “I had some funny misunderstandings because of the language. For example, I wanted to get some bread buns and so went into the bakery and asked for a dozen bums. “Another thing was when I was going out and asked to bring a plate. I took an empty plate. They thought it was hilarious.” Tove completed her degree in the early 90s during the ‘recession we had to have’. Unemployment was high but not be thwarted, she accepted the position of manager at Hungry Jack’s in Toowoomba. It was her first real job. “Then I started a master’s degree in International Business because I wasn’t sure what else to do. One of the studies was in International Law which I found very interesting and so, went down that path.” In 1994, a year after her first child was born Tove began her law degree. During the next five years whilst living in Toowoomba, she studied externally at Sydney’s Macquarie University, birthed two more children and worked at USQ as a tutor in Marketing and Human Resource Management. “I either had a big tummy or a new baby and went back and forth to Sydney carting all these babies for my external study visit. I studied at night for seven years and obtained my law degree in 1999. “My husband Kim was awesome. I couldn’t have done it without that teamwork.” Tove began her career in law as Alistair Charlton’s articled clerk in Maleny. The family moved from Toowoomba in January 2000. Seven years later, she acquired the business of Charlton and Bain now known as Easton Lawyers. Not one to be complacent, Tove Easton continued to innovate. As her children grew she began working with her violin once again. In 2004, she auditioned and gained a position in the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra. Add to the Tove mix the desire to learn Spanish. She is now in her third year of external study in advanced Spanish at Macquarie University. She adds: “I’ve also started Arabic lessons. We have Norwegian friends who live in Cairo. They invited us to visit

and so I thought I’d better learn the language. It’s a fascinating culture and so learning the language will be awesome fun.” Another source of awesome fun for Tove was a Portrait and Life Drawing course completed in November last year at the Brisbane Institute of Art. She is going to re-join the course for another six months later this year. While Tove Easton seemed to have a charmed life, tragedy stalked in 2011 when her youngest son aged 12 became critically ill. He was on life support for a week due to multi organ failure. His life hung in the balance. The cause of the illness was a mystery – diagnoses septic shock. The discharge certificate says, miraculously survived. It was the community response to this family’s plight that Tove speaks about with love and gratitude. “Kim and I would each do 12 hour shifts at the hospital while also managing our family and work. We would come home and there would be a dish on the doorstep, our dinner. There were prayers, messages of support, cakes, and also mango and lilly pilly trees which I planted. Some gifts were from people we didn’t even know.” Tove concludes, “This community embraced me in a way that I never thought possible. The people are real. I love this community and love being part of it. I love that I can contribute to it in a meaningful way.”

ARE GOODS OF AN ’ACCEPTABLE QUALITY’? As we are close to Mother’s day, I thought it useful to raise the issue of the quality of the goods that you will purchase for your Mum – or indeed gifts that you receive because you are a mum - and what happens when the goods you have just purchased or received do not meet your expectations. The Competition and Consumer Act (2010) (Cth) (the Act), and incorporating in its Schedule 2 the Australian Consumer Law, provides uniform legislative protections for all Australians, based on the premise that goods must be of an ‘acceptable quality’. Prior to the Act’s introduction, rather than considering whether goods were of ‘acceptable quality’ you would consider the good’s ‘merchantable quality’ . This generally meant that goods bought only had to be ‘reasonable’ in description and price rather than ‘acceptable’ in description and price. In other words, the new requirement of ‘acceptable quality’ demands a great level of quality than merely that of ‘merchantable quality’. How then does one establish whether goods are of an ‘acceptable quality’ ? The Supplier guarantees that the goods must be: •
fit for the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied
•
acceptable in appearance and finish
•
free from defects
•
safe and durable.
Therefore, goods that are of ‘merchantable quality’ might not be ’acceptable’ to a consumer if, for instance , there is minor blemish in the appearance. Note, however, that, if the blemish was brought to your attention at the time of purchase it may be regarded as a product of “acceptable quality” as you were made aware of the defect, and elected to continue with the transaction. A supplier may have breached this guarantee of ‘acceptable quality’ if: •
the product would not be acquired by a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the nature and extent of the failure; or
•
the product did not match a description or a demonstration model; or
•
the product did not meet the standard that is expected of goods of that nature, or
•
the supplier did not disclose that the goods are unfit, or
•
the goods are unsafe.
Depending on the type of guarantee and nature of the breach, there are numerous remedies that a consumer may seek, although most consumers will seek a refund or the replacement of the goods. Suppliers are required to remedy any defects in a reasonable time, and if they fail to do so, legal action can be initiated.
An early photo of Pattemore House and family show just how busy the garden was!
Pattemore House joins Gardening on the edge
V
AL CARBERy REMEMBERS her visits vividly to the house in north Maleny that her mother grew up in. Alma Pattemore was nine when she was sent to “Fairview” (Pattemore House) to help look after her ailing grandmother, Emily Pattemore, a common practice in 1916. Eventually, Alma married Maleny dairyman George Guille and they began setting up their own home and family. No doubt memories of the beautiful house and garden inspired them, as the Pattemores were known for their fragrant, flower-filled garden. “The garden was important – not just for the cut flowers they brought inside to dress the table daily, and making into wedding bouquets, but it was a place of beauty they spent time in with the family,” recalls Val. Now listed on the Queensland State Heritage Register,

you can imagine how excited the Friends of Pattemore House (of which Val is Patron) were when the Maleny Garden Club invited them to be one of their six display gardens at this year’s Gardening on the Edge. Built in 1907 and called “Fairview” by the family, once the pit-sawn farmhouse was completed they set about planting the all-important vegetable as well as busy flower gardens, growing corn in the fenced paddock nearby to feed their pigs. The Pattemores left after JR Pattemore’s death in 1948 and since then, other families owned the farmhouse and developed the gardens to suit their own requirements. The last family to live there prior to being purchased by the Caloundra City Council in 1995 were the Armstrongs, with Daisy Armstrong a keen gardener and involved in the Maleny Garden Club.

EW OWNERS, Jeremi and Jody Scott are pleased to be opening their doors of Maple Street Meats to meat lovers on Friday May 5. Jeremi has 23 years experience as a butcher, and has previously owned shops in Maleny and Beerwah. Wife Jody is a born and bred ‘Malenyite’ and together they have three children at the Maleny schools and all are involved in sports - touch football, netball, cricket and soccer. Another member of the new team is Blair Howard, who was an apprentice under Jeremi and will be working on this new venture at Maple Street Meats. The couple will be stocking free range and organic produce. Jody says,” Jeremi is well known for the ‘easy dinners’, which are real family favourites, like readymade scrolls, pies, stir fries and stews.” The couple always wanted to have a business in the town where they live, so they can offer a real personalised service. “With our new business comes a new name and look, but the values of our excellent customer service remain the same. “As there is no better place to live and raise a family than in Maleny, we aim to support locals and the community.” you’ll find them at the Riverside Centre, call 5429 6499 or look for Maple Street Meats on Facebook!

An Irish slant on
IDAHO F
OR THE THIRD year running the Maleny Film Society, in collaboration with Maleny IDAHO, is screening a LGBTIQ-themed movie to help our local community to celebrate IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia).
In previous years they have screened the movies Pride (2015) and Carol (2016). This year they are screening The Queen of Ireland at the Maleny Community Centre. This is an extremely important film for the LGBTIQ community and not one to be missed. It has had limited release, so this is a great opportunity for all our community to support this collaboration and our community. The film centres around events in Ireland, which became the first country in the world to legalise samesex marriage by popular vote in 2015, thanks in part to the advocacy of a drag queen called Panti Bliss. A pub owner and longtime fixture on the gay scene, she rose to mainstream fame the year before the vote
In under a decade, May 17 is the single most important date for LGBTI communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale - in Maleny, celebrate International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) and watch the The Queen of Ireland on May 6

movement in Ireland. Filmmaker Conor Horgan has directed an inspired documentary about Rory O’Neill and his/her heroic campaign which surprisingly made Ireland a leading nation in the battle for sexual equality. This heroic journey did not succeed through violence and anger but with tremendous humour and good will.
when her male alter ego, Rory O’Neill, was sued for criticising a group of activists on TV for their views on homosexuality. The lawsuit sparked a national outcry known as “Pantigate.” During the controversy, Panti made a speech about homophobia that became a viral video sensation and turned her into a symbol of the gay rights

Hands-on fun at the small Farmers tent A
CROSS BOTH SHOW days the Small Farmers Tent showcases our Hinterland producers with practical demonstrations, farmer talks, hands-on displays and four legged friends for the kids to meet. Organiser, Jessica Wild is passionate about our country show, "It's accessible and interesting for the whole family grandparents to teens and young bubs." Jess says the tent promotes sustainability, "you don't have to have a 100 acres to be involved - you could have a pot plant with cherry tomatoes, a couple of chooks - or love cooking with good foods. If you want to learn how it was farmed in the first place - this is place to come to!" Glasshouse Christian College students share their use of drones with property mapping and on their working farms. Hospitality students cook up preserves - and Spencer Shaw gives some native alternatives for your own jams and chutneys. Maleny CWA's Judy Stubbs inspires you with lunch box suggestions and the Girl Guides prepare rice paper rolls, whilst Morag Gamble shows how you can grow some of the ingredients using permaculture principles. There is a focus on dairy - with industry representatives, a camel milk supplier and Maleny Cheese. Check out the cheese making and tasting. Hear about holistic and organic practices with beef farming - you can sample sausages straight from the farm gate.
"For families who come for the day and are looking to wind down with the kids, you can come see the miniature horses. Nambour Christian College students display how they prepare them for horse shows. The kids will be talking for a change, instead of us adults. "It's nice be able to see the miniature horses up close and personal. Did you know they are one of the largest exhibit sections at the show? People are really getting into it.” For the first time the poultry judging is open for all ages and free to enter - you can then pick up tips from the poultry judges. Remember there are regular activities like simulated milking, drive your first tractor, potting seedlings and veggie art sculptures that will keep smiles on the kids. "I think we're just really lucky our show is so community orientated, we have so many community members, groups and sponsors - everyone is getting it ready - across the Sunshine Coast region. "I'm excited so many people show an interest in the local

agricultural scene. The show only continues if people keep coming through the gate, and exhibitors exhibit!" Jess says to check the program for the scheduled workshops - you want time to visit the pavilions, see the livestock and sideshow alley; you don't want to miss out on something. But what does show diehard, Jess, really enjoy at the Maleny Show? "The wood chop. Who doesn’t like seeing someone swinging a big sharp implement not far from their toenails?" And one more thing… "I'm quite competitive - I like to guess the weight of the fat bullock. Each year I think I'll get it but I never do!" you'll find the Small Farmers Tent at the Entertainment Arena.

T
HOSE WHO KNOW ME know of my lifelong obsession with the 7th continent. I have always been drawn to remote places, mountains, snow and ice. Following my first expedition to Antarctica in 2013, I wrote of my fantastic voyage, submitted the story to Michael Berry (then owner of Hinterland Times) complete with photos, and was overjoyed when he invited me to come on board as a feature writer for this superb magazine. I should have known that one trip to Antarctica was never going to satisfy me. There are those of us who find that this continent haunts until we just have to return. The past summer saw me return not once, but twice. I applied to take part in a 32-day semiA moment’s solitude circumnavigation during February and March – a repeat of my 2013 expedition – but was unsure if it would become a reality. I am an impatient person, and not being able to bear the suspense of not knowing whether this trip would eventuate, I signed up for a shorter, action-filled trip during November. Basecamp Plancius, as the trip was known, included snow shoeing, camping on ice, and kayaking, in full immersion suits, among the icebergs. All well and good, except I had never been in a kayak. A friend took me under his wing and we paddled around Lake Baroon early in the morning for a few weeks so I could learn how to handle the craft. This turned out to be the highlight of a highlight-rich adventure. There are few experiences to match quietly working your way around sculptured blue icebergs, seeing their complete
structure below crystal-clear water; having penguins pop up to look you straight in the eye and whales dive metres from your kayak. I returned home to Maleny with just 10 weeks to prepare for the ‘Big Expedition’ which, thanks to Oceanwide Expeditions, I was able to join. We boarded MV Ortelius in Bluff, New Zealand, and set sail at midnight. Crossing the Southern Ocean is not for the faint-hearted, but the seasick pills worked and we paused for a day on Campbell Island, a nature reserve south of New Zealand. This sub-Antarctic island plays host to Southern Royal Albatross that nest among the tussock grass. It was worth the few hours’ hike along a narrow boardwalk, winding up through stunted wind-blown mega herbs, to stand a couple of metres from a mother and chick. Southwards to the Ross Sea, Ortelius often had to change course because of dense pack ice. It is this approach to adventure that marks the difference between an expedition and a cruise. We expeditioners felt our way, ever so carefully, into areas other ships would avoid. Ortelius carries another bonus not afforded other ships: three helicopters. We scrambled on board to fly into the Taylor Dry Valley, a place on the Antarctic mainland visited by very few other than scientists. On a continent that is covered by four kilometres of ice, the dry valleys are devoid of snow or, for that matter, rainfall of any description, for a million years. A true desert. Once again, I stood inside Robert Falcon Scott’s two huts on Ross Island – Terra Nova at Cape Evans and Discovery at Hut Point – feeling so privileged and more than a little in awe of the men who gave their lives for exploration. The voyage was rich with wildlife. We rode our Zodiacs through ice crowded with penguins and seals; a humpback whale played alongside; orcas patrolled ice flows, their blows caught by the setting sun that turned our icy world
Inset: An emperor penguin at close quarters Main photo: Mirror reflections at dusk
golden. Glaciers of blue ice tumbled from mountain peaks into bays. I truly have never seen such beauty. Thirty-two days is a long time to be on a ship, with many of the days out of sight of land and nothing to see but giant icebergs floating past and albatross circling, but this is the time friendships are forged; stories and photos shared. On my first trip in 2013, I was in awe of actually ‘being there’. What I had expected to be familiar through a lifetime of reading had turned out to be so magnificently huge and otherworldly, I spent the first week in a daze. This time, I was fully in the moment. I recognised important landmarks, many of them now ‘old friends’, and took in much more of my surroundings. I may never have the chance to return, but I am content to have lived my dream three times, which is more than I had expected from life. One aspect all three trips had in common is that, free from any contact with the outside world by choice, layers stripped from my mind to reveal my core. I have returned with a clarity of who I am and where I fit in life.

Montville Art Gallery
ODD WAS BORN in Brisbane in 1963. He is a son of prominent artist, Eric Whisson and an older brother of Colley Whisson. Although he began painting seriously in the 1990s, it was not until 2003 that Todd gave up his job as a framer to become a full time professional artist. In 2011, Todd embarked on tertiary education in contemporary art through TAFE Queensland. In his first year, he was awarded the highest achievement, acquisition of his series “Hidden Secrets”. In his second and final years, Todd’s paintings sold out in the student exhibitions and he was awarded the acquisition prize for his “Scar Tissue” series. Todd completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts through QCA (Griffith University) at the end of 2015 having achieved academic excellence throughout his studies. “As an artist, I will never stop learning, when I do I am dead!” Todd told us. “I was fortunate to be selected as one of only six artists to attend a master class in colour conducted by Merv. Moriarty. I wanted to learn more about colour and how it works and responds. Merv. being an innovator in modern scientific colour theory, aesthetics and a practioner was the perfect tutor.” “Todd’s recent paintings have developed markedly” said retiring gallery director, Tony Page. “They have elevated his passion and vision to another level of skill and perception.” “As the new owners of the gallery, we are very pleased to have Todd as the feature artist for May,” Wayne Maklin told us. Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. From May 1st, Todd’s paintings will be featured under “Exhibitions” on the gallery website www.montvilleartgallery.com.au
Montville Art Gallery owners Joan and Tony Page say goodbye
The loyal stable of approximately 50 artists were thrilled for Tony and Joan, despite admitting they would miss them. “Some of our artists have been exhibiting here since before we bought the original gallery in 1990,” Tony says. The plan is to hand over to Wayne and Tracey, but continue an on-going relationship. “We will act as agents for two of the artists,” Joan smiles. And what will they do with all their free time? “We both love playing golf together and trying new restaurants!” says Tony. “It will be strange not being on call seven days a week,” admits Joan. “We’ve not had a proper holiday in 10 years. I think we’ll do short trips, stay overnight - have lots of little adventures.” “Joan also has an A4 page of ‘jobs’ and it keeps getting added to,” Tony laughs. They show me one of their early clippings albums, images of celebrations and events with well-known actors, locals and tourists mingling throughout the gallery. A brief glimpse into their vibrant, artistic history inside the original building. “We leave on May the second,” says Joan. “We’re looking forward to our next chapter, but I am a little nervous – this is the first time since I was 18 that I haven’t had a job!” We wish Joan and Tony all the best, and thank them for their valuable contributions and support of this wonderful community.

HOSE WHO FREQUENT Montville have probably seen the ‘for sale’ sign outside the Montville Art Gallery for some time – eight years to be precise. “We put the gallery on the market a week before the financial crisis hit in 2008,” Joan tells me, “That timing was the biggest mistake I’ve made!” Resigned to the economic climate, the couple continued to enjoy their business and as time went by received various offers. “People wanted to buy the gallery, or the site, but it was hard to find people, who wanted both,” Tony shares. “It was last June,” recalls Joan, “and we were in the middle of a sale. This couple were waiting patiently in the background, and when we’d finished they came over and said, ‘We want to buy your gallery’.” The new owners, Wayne (a successful artist) and Tracey Malkin, were already experienced small-business owners, and seeing the gallery as a long-term project they have now moved to Montville. “I knew this couple were the ones,” smiles Joan. “They understand the place, and have some wonderful ideas for the future.”

HE TOWNSHIP OF Maleny is indeed in a fortunate position with a hospital as part of its infrastructure. 1917 saw the community rally to make certain the dream of this hospital came to fruition. Today a hundred years on, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary continues to ensure funds are raised to see what began as a community project, reflects the ongoing essence and importance of what the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital has come to mean to this community. The much anticipated Annual Fashion and Flowers Morning Tea has the ladies of the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary again stepping up and stepping out to make sure the event is memorable. The funds raised will go towards a wish-list hospital requirement - like the equipment Lyn Mihalic and Val Bridger are pictured with for the Emergency room. The annual fundraiser is on May 11 at the Pavilion at the Show Grounds at 9.30am. Tickets are available from Lilly Reid 5435 2064.
OST PEOPLE WHO are lucky enough to have a Hibiscus plant in their garden think they have the best blooms ever. Admission is free, and the event runs from 9am 12.30pm. There will be hundreds of specimens entered by society members and an expert will be on hand to identify your bloom and help resolve any problems you may be having with your own Hibiscus plant, and tips on fertilizing, pruning and general care. For those who would like to purchase an exotic plant, dozens of exotic varieties you won’t find at your local hardware store will be available to purchase on the day.

In fact, the Maleny Football Club was recently rewarded with $250 when the Hinterland Times’s Karen Muir (pictured with Mark Ramke, President Maleny Rangers Football Club and Bob Malcolm, MCU CEO) financed her new home through MCU. Clubs play a role in keeping us active both physically and mentally within our community, and sometimes they struggle with fundraising. AST yEAR, more than 35,000 people enjoyed the inaugural 10-day HORIZON festival, which featured more than 200 events across 16 locations and showcased more than 1000 artists. The 2016 program included the Conondale Eco- Arts Fest, Montville drawing workshop, Kenilworth's Arty Garden Party, Louise King and Linsey Pollak performances, Maleny Film Society and Art on Cairncross exhibition - and that was just a fraction! HORIZON Sunshine Coast festival of arts and culture has been showcased by Arts Queensland as an exemplar for other councils and those in the arts/cultural sector. Arts Portfolio councillor, Rick Baberowski, said the case study profiled the HORIZON model as a benchmark for other organisations to consider when developing ideas to support, develop and grow the arts and cultural sector. “The overwhelming success of our inaugural HORIZON festival and the positive feedback we continue to receive is testament to the delivery model we have developed,” Cr Baberowski said. “For this to be acknowledged, and showcased by Arts Queensland is fantastic. It’s a great way to share learnings and insights with other councils and the arts and cultural sector. “Arts Queensland provided some wonderful feedback

after our inaugural festival last year, in particular regarding our coordination and marketing of the event,” Cr Baberowski said. “They also commented that our strategy of promoting a number of existing events, as well as new smaller events, helped raise the festival’s overall profile which gave us more media attention and increased awareness amongst residents and visitors.” In 2017, HORIZON will be held from August 25 until September 3 and will once again immerse the region in creativity. Expressions of interest to be a part of the program are still open, so if you’re an artist, producer, creative or performer get in touch with the HORIZON team. Strange the Dreamer
The Street Beneath My Feet
by Nikki Gemmell
by Laini Taylor
by Charlotte Guillain Illustrated by Yuval Zommer
"I just wish I'd listened to Mum rationally. I wish I'd had a very calm conversation with her about what she really wanted to do in terms of the end of her life without me getting emotional, without me talking about the grandkids," Nikki said. "I wish I had been there for her, in a way that I just wasn't." One of Australia's bravest and most honest writers explores the devastating aftermath of her elderly mother's decision to end her own life. Nikki Gemmell's world changed dramatically in October 2015 when the body of her elderly mother was found and it became clear she had decided to end her own life. After the initial shock and devastation came the guilt and the horror, for Nikki, her family, relatives and friends. There was no note, so the questions that Elayn's death raised were endless. What is a good death? A courageous memoir of a mother’s choice and a daughter’s grief.
A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. The dream chooses the dreamer and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. A stunning opportunity presents itself and Lazlo has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever. Strange the Dreamer is a beautiful, unusual story with wonderfully crafted characters and a gripping storyline that keeps you enchanted until the very end. Laini Taylor has the ability to build unique worlds that are intricate and wholly original, but still very believable and organically linked to the character’s lives. Magical and mystical, whimsical and lyrical, this young adult title will sit just as proudly with adult classic fantasy. This is gripping storytelling for every age.
This double-sided foldout book takes you on a fascinating journey deep underground. One side of the foldout shows the ground beneath the city, whilst the other side of the foldout shows the ground beneath the countryside. The scenes in the book, by the widely acclaimed illustrator yuval Zommer, are continuous, so contrasting underground sections, from tunnels and pipes to burrowing creatures, layers of rock to the planet's molten core, run seamlessly into the next. Mixing urban and rural settings, as well as Geology, Archaeology and Natural History. The Street Beneath My Feet offers children the opportunity to explore their world in a detailed learning experience. And its fold-out, 'Laperello' style, which extends to 2.5 metres in length, is great fun to spread out on the floor and really get involved!

In the Wild A Bit Wild
I
with Spencer Shaw
F THE ExTENT of your interest in gardening is the perfect lawn and an immaculately pruned hedge (probably Mock Orange), then this article is probably not for you. That said, I aim for inclusiveness in my approach so bear with me and we’ll see if we can’t find some common ground and if not then hopefully some light entertainment. Human beings are beings of nature, we enjoy interaction with the natural world. Although culturally some humans (unfortunately most) draw a line between humans and all the rest of life on earth, the fact remains that biologically and ecologically we are all part of life on earth. We’re inspired and in awe of areas of natural beauty, we enjoy watching other animals, we enjoy growing things, gardening & bushwalking. All these things make us happier, healthier and intrinsically content. So, my thoughts naturally ramble in the direction of cooperation and sharing when it comes to the other life forms we are blessed to share this earth with. In our gardens, our green dominions, those areas that we can rule over with an iron fist (or at least an assorted blend of steel, alloy and plastic tools) and shape as is our whim into a series of monoculture, monotonous, monospecific, mediocre (and a legion of other words starting with m) manicured lawns and shrubs.
Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193
These gardens, at best require constant intervention of labour, machine and chemical to maintain this level of morose mediocrity and at worst are functionally green deserts. We can do all this, or, we can get a little bit wild. Getting a bit Wild in the garden, can take all sorts of forms, but the most crucial element is increasing the range of plants, in both species diversity and form. Ideally you would use as a great range of local native plants that reflect those that naturally occur in your area and provide food and resources for local wildlife. This unfortunately means sticking with local native plants of SE QLD and limits you to a mere 3500 native plant species…. although some could argue that’s a reasonable palette from which to select! Other valuable elements to getting a little bit wild include: Mulch – use natural leaf litter, living mulches (groundcovers), rockpiles and logs; Question your Chemical Use – insecticides & rodenticides may be useful short-term solutions to pest damage, but they are poisons that kill other wildlife and could end up in your food! Habitat – nest boxes, rocks, dead trees provide valuable homes. The wilding of your garden is generous, creative and sharing. It reduces financial and physical inputs over time and the rewards, well they tweet for themselves!
A Landholders’ Guide
B
ARUNG LANDCARE has just published the new edition of A Landholders’ Guide to Living on the Blackall Range, a must-have for new residents and a useful source of updated information for those of us who have been here for some time. The first edition was published in 1997, the second in 2005, and our knowledge and understanding of our environment have advanced considerably since then. Additional opportunities may await us, problem weeds will inevitably confront us, and there’s always more to find out about our flora and fauna. Readers will enjoy learning something of the early history of the Blackall Range, its climate, soils and landforms and the way water moves through the various catchments. Our homes and properties are on the headwaters of several river systems, the Mary, Stanley, Mooloolah
and Maroochy Rivers. Obi Obi Creek drains into Lake Baroon and continues beyond this water impoundment to join the Mary near Kenilworth. We all live in a catchment. Fire can be a threat in dry times so it is useful to know something about vegetation types, how to reduce risk and where to source additional information.
There are useful gardening tips, including designing to attract wildlife, a focus for many of our local gardeners. Some of us are fortunate to have patches of remnant vegetation on our properties. Who can help us identify what is there? How can we best enhance or extend those patches? What are the right trees to plant on our soils and much, much more. This full-colour publication shares the collective knowledge of locals and is an invaluable guide to working with the land in our part of the world. A Landholders’ Guide to Living on the Blackall Range is available from Barung, at bookstores and at local Information Centres. Keep a copy handy for ready reference, resources and contacts. you’ll enjoy reading it anyway.

STARTED A previous column with the words “another edition, another major weather event…”, and this edition is no exception, with cyclone Debbie battering the Range at the end of last month. The frequency of these events certainly seems to be increasing. My clients were fine, but people who don’t have their trees regularly assessed and maintained suffered, some heavily. I was discussing this with a cherry picker operator who attends hundreds of tree failures where house damage has occurred, and he said in EVERy case, the failures occurred at a defect point. This tells me that all of those failures

could have been avoided if an arborist had assessed the trees prior to the failure and recommended some remedial action. On a lighter note, if you ever wondered if your council rates were being well spent, I urge you to take a walk along the new boardwalk behind the Maleny Riverside Centre and beyond. It is nothing short of magical. I commend all the people involved. It was a powerful reminder to me of why I love this place and the tree species that naturally occur here. juveniles, and it fills my heart with joy to see them have room to grow to their full, unfettered potential. Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, and Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook

Invisible Hand E VEN AS HE PREPARED to remove the velvet glove from his iron fist, Malcolm Turnbull spoke more in sorrow than in anger: “the market is not working as it should,” he mourned.
But this was, like so many of his lawyerly assertions, at best a half truth. As Turnbull, a businessman and a banker – a graduate from Goldman Sachs no less—must know, the market was working precisely as it was meant to. The gas producers saw a better price and latched on to it. This was textbook supply and demand: if there was a shortage of gas available for all, the highest bidders got what was around. Certainly there were unexpected consequences when a glut of the stuff forced international prices down while the domestic buyers were stuck with soaring costs to secure whatever was left, but hey, that’s just Adam Smith’s invisible hand at work, or perhaps more of a rapacious, grasping talon, a predator red in tooth and claw. But conservative wisdom has always been that it is safer to leave the market alone than to interfere. A former Liberal leader, John Hewson, who was an economist before he was a politician, used to offer the analogy of the economy as a rubber sheet: there may be bobbles in it, but whenever you tried to push one down, another one popped up somewhere else. In latter years he has grown out of his preoccupation with rubber sheets, but it is still an imperative of the freeenterprise system that governments of all kinds should be treated as the enemy – unless, of course, they can provide tax lurks, subsidies, and favourable conditions for the grasping claw to prosper. So has Turnbull finally revealed his true colours – are we seeing the real Malcolm Turnbull: the rampaging socialist leftie, the threat to sovereign risk, the protectionist determined to enforce stifling regulation on an industry which, we were told, was barrelling ahead, a model for the transitioning economy that would secure, dare we breathe it, jobs and growth?
Well, no; insofar as he believes in anything these days, our Liberal prime minister is still a zealous adherent to the free market system. This is why he has done everything possible to avoid the inevitable – a few weeks ago he called the tycoons together and pleaded with them to be nice: make sure we keep just enough gas for industry, and, if at all possible, to avoid state-wide blackouts for the rest of the hoi polloi. Think of the national interest – or at the very least, the interest of his government. As we know now, the tax-dodging tycoons reacted with puzzlement, almost disbelief: what was all this national interest jazz? Interest was something you collected from the banks after profits. That was their job – they had never signed a social contract, whatever that is, and if they did they would make sure there was an escape clause or two in the small print.
“..the economy as a rubber sheet: there may be bobbles in it, but whenever you tried to push one down, another one popped up somewhere else”
So without actually giving the prime minister the finger, they chose to ignore him. However, the big gas users had a certain amount of clout of their own, so reluctantly – indeed, kicking and screaming – Turnbull was dragged to the party.
But even then he promised he would only put it in a little way and he would take it out again as soon as possible – this was “a target, temporary measure,” and in any case it was all the states’ fault. As soon as they could be brought to their senses the invisible hand would resume its rule. Turnbull will no doubt get some brownie points from the polls, which is obviously needed, but in the process he has added to the doubts and fears of the voters who are still trying to work out who or what he really is, and will (or at least should) enrage the neocons and the economic fundamentalists – where, we might ask, is the daily diatribe from The Australian’s Judith Sloan, who may still be reaching for her smelling salts? And, as is always the case, Turnbull’s big announcement became inextricably tangled with the ruminations of his treasurer, Scott Morrison, who told us, with the air of a man who has finally seen a holy vision, that there is a difference between good and bad debt, and he is going to exploit it to the max when he is preparing the budget. If Morrison means anything (always a doubtful proposition) he seems to be saying that good debt is about building things and bad debt is about paying for services the electorate demands. On this basis the Adani pipeline is good, the National Disability Service is bad – and that’s it. This is obviously nonsense – debt is morally neutral. Some capital expenditure is desirable, as is some recurrent expenditure and some isn’t, depending a wide range of factors. This should be the real debate, but Morrison’s formula eschews nuance; like all the government’s slogans it is about an easy sound bite that can be used to justify whatever backflip is deemed necessary at the time. And it is obviously a time for a large spot of pork barrelling in the name of infrastructure – as Bert Kelly, an earlier sceptic on such matters used to say, I can feel a dam coming on. So in the circumstances it is all too easy to be cynical.

HINTERLAND TIMES – MAy 2017
Actually regulating important national industries such as gas is both sensible and necessary policy, as is borrowing money for worthwhile infrastructure. The problem is that Morrison and Turnbull have spent so long denying the obvious and debasing the political currency that few people will be convinced that this time they actually mean it – that they are going to embrace a few sensible ideas instead of telling the public that everything is a crisis and it is all Labor’s fault. Of course, it would help if they could avoid the jingoistic bombast; Turnbull wrapped up his announcement in a slather of bull about Australia first – Australian business, Australian industry, Australian jobs – Australia uber allies and bugger the rest of the world. But perhaps that is just what the focus groups tell him. that this is what plays well in the marginals. Or perhaps Turnbull is just practising before he oozes his way across the Pacific to dive into the bowels of an obsolete American aircraft carrier and kneel at the feet of the mighty Donald. After all, speaking the same bull will save the cost of an interpreter.

GREAT WORKOUT immediately boosts your energy and your mood, and also helps to set a healthy tone for how you approach your day. I have a buddy and we boost each other up a few times a week before breakfast, and now it is part of my daily routine. This month, Rotary tells us about their bowel scan kits, Mary and Tim Bagshaw talk knees, Melissa Borich shares plans for a meditation guru visiting the Hinterland, Wendy Rosenfeldt helps adjust us to the change of season and Marisa Kliese explains the use of affirmations. And remember – simple lifestyle changes, including maintaining a healthy weight, being active, eating well, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and staying SunSmart prevents at least one-third of all cancers.

Bowel cancer check – be in it
B
OWEL CANCER is responsible for more deaths each year than prostate or breast cancer, yet it one of the easiest cancers to control. The clue lies in early detection. If detected early there is a 90% recovery rate; a late detection often proves fatal. The use of a simple BowelScan kit from Rotary can provide that early warning. There are approximately 14000 cases of bowel cancer detected each year. Sadly, of these up to 50% will be too late to survive treatment.
The Rotary BowelScan kits will be available from May 1-31 this year
MAPLETON ~ MONTVILLE ~ MALENY ~ IMBIL
The Rotary BowelScan kits will be available from the following pharmacies May 1-31 this year: Maleny Amcal, Maleny Riverside, Montville and Mapleton at a cost of $15.
5478 6600
There are no dietary restrictions, collection of the sample is easy, and you mail back, in a prepaid envelope, the sample to the testing laboratory which then advises you of the result. No need to return the sample to the local pharmacy.
Massage By Jacqui O’Grady
So it’s up to you – hide behind the good old Aussie saying of “She’ll be right mate” and do nothing, or face reality head on and buy a kit from your local pharmacy. Remember spending that $15 and having the test done could just be the best $15 you ever spend.
What can massage really do? Muscle overuse, & incorrect posture, can build tension in our muscles.
Mindfulness and Meditation in Daily Li fe
Massage can make the connective tissue around & within your muscles more pliable, enabling the muscle to move more freely which allows flexibility to increase at the joints. Massage increases blood flow, & healthy interaction with local nerves, cleaning away debri, & circulating the nervous systems’ healing hormones.
Meditation 7 day Meditation Retreat “translating | 1 - 7 July 2017 into a way of being” Chenrezig Institute EUDLO Facilitated by Ruth & Ian Gawler with Melissa Borich IAN GAWLER is holding his first Qld retreat at the delightful Chenrezig Institute, situated in Eudlo. The retreat will be practical and regenerative; accessible to any beginner along with more experienced meditators.
The advantage here at DYNAMIC MASSAGE is the integration of other therapies when required with other practitioners to complete the circle of care for you.
!Relaxation massage - for the pure pleasure of reducing stress & muscle tension
Secular, non-secular all-inclusive, as we take the time out of our busy lives to meditate for a variety of personal reasons. Whether one is in full health or dealing with health concerns this retreat shows you ways in which to regain perspective, clarity, vitality and balance. Exploring techniques that unite practice with daily life. Ian has written many books on this topic, and has an amazing ability to share in such a way that is accessible, informative, research based, and experiential.
Massage can identify inconsistencies, fibrous areas, knots, inflammation, spasm, & relieve tension & free nerve pathways that may otherwise be tethered.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You
Adjusting to the change of season
A
S THE WEATHER cools down some people breathe a sigh of relief and feel invigorated by the crisp cool Wendy Rosenfeldt mornings while others find that their body feels stiffer and it is harder to creep out from under the doona in the mornings. How we experience the seasonal cycles depends on our Ayurvedic mind/ body type and our imbalances. Vata types like the heat but find the cold weather aggravating. Being hot by nature, Pitta predominants prefer the cooler weather while Kapha natured people like warm weather but find humidity or cold, damp climates uncomfortable. Summer and early Autumn are governed by Pitta dosha. Pitta exhibits the qualities of fire, being hot and intense by nature and displays the colours of red, orange and yellow. We feel Pitta in the hot Summer sun and see the colours in the autumn leaves. We naturally try to balance Pitta during Summer by eating more salads and sweet juicy fruit. Swimming in the ocean and spending time in nature also offsets Pitta’s heat and intensity. As we get further in to Autumn, airy Vata dosha begins to predominate. Vata is light, dry, quick, moving and cold by nature. Late Autumn and Winter are colder and drier and this can influence the balance of our doshas in the mind and body. you may feel that your skin dries out, you feel more stiff or brittle in the mornings and your sleep can become lighter. Mentally you may feel spaced out or indecisive. Cravings for fresh
salads and cooling fruit are replaced by the desire for cooked, nourishing meals, warming spices and heavier foods. Vata is balanced by sweet, sour and salty tastes and when out of balance can result in strong cravings for desserts and salty snacks. Vata needs some sweet, sour and salty foods to maintain balance but that can be found in sweet potato, carrots or pumpkin, plain yogurt or lemon for sour and good quality salt used in cooking. If we incorporate all the tastes in our diet we are less likely to crave these tastes in junk food. Adding more oil to the diet in the cooler months can also pacify the dryness of Vata. Covering the head and neck will minimise the Vata aggravation from the cold and wind and is especially important for babies or people with little or no hair as most of our body’s heat escapes through our head. A nourishing warm oil massage is a Vata pacifying treat as it soothes the spacey, lightness of excess Vata as well as improving circulation and keeping the skin from drying out. Going to bed early and having enough rest is important if Vata is strong in the physiology. Taking extra rest if you feel you are starting to get sick will allow the body time to fight off any infections and rebalance. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda Practitioner and Teacher of Transcendental Meditation. For more information call 5499 9580/ 0438 507 188 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

T’S BEEN ESTIMATED that over 500 million people worldwide struggle with anxiety, and although each of these people may experience similar, though slightly differently symptoms, they generally feel very alone and trapped by their emotions. Anxious thoughts and emotions cause one to contract, these symptoms can be so powerful that they can hold the individual captive. There may be a desire to hide from the world, this can express itself as various forms of social anxiety. Food may become an issue, such as you might be drawn to eat the wrong foods, thereby downgrading your chemical balance, or you may be drawn to stop eating, and in this way cause your blood sugar to drop at a time when your brain chemistry needs balance. Sometimes mood changes are experienced that might mask the underlying anxiety or depression, the individual may not even be aware of what is driving the emotional roller coaster that can make simple decisions difficult, and even interfere with the ability to remember things that are usually easy for you. There are many physical practices that can bring
about balance, as can herbal, nutritional and homeopathic supplements, and also some conventional medicines that can help restore brain chemistry. However because we’re often engaged in unconscious self talk and our subconscious is always listening, for this reason, the use of affirmative statements spoken and written can be powerfully restorative because words elicit chemistry. The following is an example from some statements I have written and which have proven helpful to my patients. “I will not judge outcomes by appearances, for I know that in this matter Infinite Spirit is now victoriously at work for me.” Close your eyes, take a breath and think about the words. “I trust Life, I am safe and secure, I am Divinely guided, Infinite Spirit within me and around me, loves, heals, and nurtures me. Understanding this, I breathe deeply and I let go.” Close your eyes, take a breath and think about the words. Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. ADVERTORIAL
Knee replacements may not be the only answer O STEOARTHRITIS (OA) OF THE KNEE joint is a common complaint in the older population. It can cause pain and loss of function, especially with things like squatting, kneeling and walking on stairs which can become increasingly difficult. Traditionally, total knee replacement has been the main treatment option for those with moderate to advanced
arthritis. Recently however, there have been some studies showing that non-operative management of knee OA can be very successful in improving OA symptoms.
A program designed by your physiotherapist involving weight-bearing training for the whole lower limb can work to subtly change the way you move. Often weakness or tightness around the hip joint can have a large effect on movement patterns in the knee. This is especially the case in those with a knock-knee type of gait. This program usually requires no special equipment and will take less than 5 minutes twice a day to complete. In conjunction with taping to help unload the painful structures in the knee (pictured), this program will help to build strength and endurance in the muscles around the knee and hip to help unload the painful joint. The tape unloads the infrapatellar fat pad, which is a highly pain-sensitive structure at the front of the knee that is thought to be a large contributor to this sort of knee pain. Even for patients who go on to opt for a total knee
replacement, this exercise program can act as a pre-hab to help increase the chances of a good outcome after surgery. The physiotherapists at Maleny Physiotherapy will be able to help you manage your knee pain and possibly delay or avoid the need for a knee replacement. For assessment and management of your knee pain, call Maleny Physiotherapy for an appointment with Tim or Mary on 5494 3911.

Carpet Month HEALTHY HOMEWARES
Ever wondered about that new carpet smell? Did you know that...
Conventional
rugs and carpets are one of the most toxic elements in your home environment.
They typically contain poisonous chemicals which off-gas in your home and cling to house dust, which you then inhale.
They may cause headaches, nausea, and nerve problems, along with irritation to your eyes, nose, and throat. Long term exposures to the fumes have been linked to a number of disorders including cancer, kidney disease, liver damage and asthma
Multiple studies have shown that synthetic carpets are a source of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), formaldehyde and allergens. These chemicals are particularly harmful to young babies - but they affect all of us to some extent.
Beautify your home the healthy way Your carpets should be certified organic! At the very least, they should be made from all-natural fibres such as wool, silk and cotton. At Healthy Homewares, all our rugs and broadloom carpets are craftsman made from natural fibres. All our rugs are hand-made and certified by Goodweave, an organization that certifies childlabor-free rugs and provides education and opportunities to at-risk children.
Custom design service Why limit yourself to boring, toxic showroom rugs? You and your home deserve better.
Special Hinterland Times offer During MAY, mention this ad for a
10% discount off our Persian, certified organic and custom design
