May I introduce myself ELCOME TO THE May edition of HT, which is packed, as usual, with local events, characters and venues to visit. I personally spent an enjoyable afternoon with local artist, Sue Neale, her fabulous feather art and her even more fabulous attitude to life.

You may have noticed it is not HT’s co-owner and editor, Michelle Gilmore, sharing these words with you this month. After almost four years of working with this excellent publication as a writer and sub-editor, I have been offered the position of editor, which is a great honour.

In fact, this attitude seems to be a running theme in our features this month: an inspirational mother who looks for the best in every situation, a group of men and women who restore and recycle with enthusiasm and humour, and a Conondale couple with a rich history who live life to the full.

Living locally and being active in many different communities, from Maleny to Mapleton to Woombye, I aim to continue to bring the ideas, passions and personalities of those across the range to these pages. I feel very lucky to be part of this great Hinterland community and the best newspaper around!

Community Park on the way!

HE MALENY CHAMBER of Commerce had the recent pleasure of hosting the announcement from the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) in partnership with a number of local service organisations, of the creation of a ‘Memorial and Pioneer Community Park’ on the Maleny Sports Park on the Precinct. The Chamber was thrilled to be invited to be involved with this wonderful community project. They believe this development will not only service locals but also bring tourists to the region, especially those with a keen interest in history.

More tourists mean more money coming into the town and businesses; so congratulations those involved with this initiative. The Chamber said they look forward to supporting and working alongside the project committee. Congratulations also to the Community Parks Maleny campaign, who encouraged feedback and support from the community in seeking generous recreational space with facilities and amenities for all. Some 300 enthusiastic passers-by signed up to their campaign in just a few hours at its official launch in Maple Street in January 2018, joining an initial band of 60 residents who showed eloquent support. This park will complement the town’s most popular outdoor destination, the Maleny Trail on the Maleny Community Precinct, the vast parkland on the town’s doorstep owned by Sunshine Coast Council.

ELISSA KENT grew up in the historic Western Queensland mining town of Charters Towers, and enjoyed a feeling of strong community, creative collaborations and the joys of music. “I grew up with my brother Steven on the family farm. When Mel was 16 she met 17-year-old Michael Kent. “At the time I had plans to study at the Conservatory of Music and continue my passion for music.” The plans took a side step however as the couple moved to Townsville in 2003 for Michael’s work and Mel picked up work in a local café. “We married in 2007 at The Strand on a hot windy day,” Mel smiled. wedding photographs!” Michael’s father, David, had passed away earlier and so Mel arranged a photograph of him to be positioned on their signing table. Mel became pregnant with their first child, Lachlan, who arrived in June 2008 and she undertook online studies to become a doula. She was mentored for eight years by a doula group and attended and assisted in many births. “I loved the birth events, watching a new life enter the world is so magical,” said Mel. Continuing her work in the community, Mel educated on birthing options and taught baby-wearing techniques. The family grew a little bigger in May 2010 when baby Evie came along, but Mel continued to mentor and support mums going through pregnancy and labour and post-natal depression. She began a placental encapsulation service where she collected and treated newly delivered placenta for the parents. “I remember brand new dads awkwardly arriving with eskies carrying the precious cargo,” Mel laughed. As part of her service, Mel air-dehydrated, ground and filled individual capsules. Mums took the tablets to increase their milk supply, boost iron levels and combat post-natal depression. Service demand increased, and Mel went from two batches a year to four batches per week. In May 2014 the family grew to welcome in their third baby, Audrey. However, this didn’t slow Mel down as an active and passionate advocate for women’s health and, with three kids, she took on one extra challenge. Mel hosted a world premiere screening of 'Microbirth' in Townsville on 20 September. (Maleny also hosted a screening on the same day.) ‘Microbirth’ is a documentary discussing scientific research about childbirth and gut bacteria. The event was a success and another event was scheduled for November.

Baby Audrey, however, began to experience complex health issues around this time. Heat was identified as a strong irritant amongst other pollutants, chemical and stress-based triggers resulting in anaphylactic attacks. The family made a choice to move to Maleny for the cooler climate to ease her conditions in 2015. They were strongly drawn to the sense of community. Mel said, “I feel like the Hinterland is like the small town I grew up in. I have a growing network of friends here and a village to raise our children in.” She began developing a children’s book Broccoli Trees – Yes Please which she published in 2017. “The book encourages children to explore and expand their palates through play.” It has sold over 650 copies with it’s healthy eating message for children. Blessed Earth in Maleny now stocks copies, which Mel is very happy about. The Kent family have been warmly welcomed by Maleny and received support from friends and family who fundraised to provide a small air purifier for Audrey. The Variety Club also ran a fundraiser which provided a large air purifier removing chemicals from the house environment. This mean less anaphylactic attacks and gives Audrey freedom to move freely around the house with less concerns of an immediate immune response. It is still a long road ahead. Audrey’s conditions are multiple, complex and chronic. There are further medical treatments scheduled in 2018 with lengthy hospital stays, testing and procedures to undergo for this active and attentive little girl. Mel said people often ask how she keeps her smile. “I work hard to find an attitude of gratitude. I find at least one thing every day that I am grateful for and I hold on to that.” This family has now found their forever home in Mooloolah Valley and travel to Maleny for school. Mel cherishes the warm, creative community and says they couldn’t do what they do without them. “It is because of them we can help our older children enjoy some time doing regular activities while knowing Audrey is safe and supported.” Mel is focussed and resilient, with two more children’s book manuscripts ready to send to her publisher this year and plans to write more. So, let’s raise a mug of tea to Mel Kent on Mother’s Day, who reminds us to look for something to be thankful for, whatever our situation in life.

Roving Restorers

It’s good to know there are groups out there who are keen to give their time and care to our wild land and wildlife. Roving Restorers is such a group, who are managing to improve wildlife corridors and re-establish natural connections for bird, beast and flower. HT’s Gay Liddington joined them on a mission in the bush.

Bobermien Creek meets the Obi Creek below the dam and flows into Kondalilla National Park. Sally and Ian’s property is part of a key east-west wildlife corridor across the Blackall Range. It is home to some at-risk species including the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, Lewin’s Rail, Cascade Tree Frog and Pink Underwing Moth. There was a flurry of activity on the creek bank as volunteers gained momentum. A cascade of water spilled over rocks. The white noise emanated a feeling of calm while birdsong entertained and drizzling rain left workers unfazed. The team moved along the bank then shifted further up creek to complete their morning’s work. Then came time to head back to the house for a cuppa. Susie enlightened me as to the history of Roving Restorers which began in 2011. It is an initiative of Hinterland Bush Links which receives core funding from Sunshine Coast Council. “I used to do walks for Barung Landcare. There was a lot of enthusiasm among people wanting to explore the bush, but were not always comfortable in taking themselves off the beaten track.

T SEEMS THAT in the world of Roving Restorers there are weeders and planters mixed with an incalculable amount of zeal. It was certainly the case when I joined eight volunteers on an excursion to the Witta property of Sally and Ian. “There’s a lot of work being done nationally and internationally on the importance of linking up blocks of bush so wildlife has greater access to habitat. It’s also about the migrations…birds following the fruit and the blossoms,” said Susie Duncan, team leader of Roving Restorers. On arrival, enthusiasm was palpable in spite of inclement weather. A winding track led to the house that overlooks the Blackall Range. Susie introduced Sally who had worked in Brisbane until 1am then drove to Witta. Such is her passion for the 11 ½ acre property. Sally shared with the group: “When we first saw this place last year, Ian fell in love with it straight away and I fell in love with the creek. I didn’t know anything about caring for the land and feel very emotional about you all being here." A safety induction, busyness in sorting tools for the job, bags for weeds, hats and hugs, the team set off carrying trays of lomandra, a hardy native known as one of the best river or creek bank stabilisers. I trailed the group down a sloping track to the creek carefully watching my step, noting that one volunteer was supported by a walking stick.

“I encouraged this group to do some bush regeneration work and gradually others joined. We called it Roving Restorers because we go all over the place. “Over a period of time we’ve had about 100 people ranging in age from 20s to 80s come and go. We can cater for people of different capabilities. “Usually about 12 members turn up and we’ve had up to 32. When we’re doing tree plantings we encourage landholders to invite their friends and family to increase the workforce.” During morning tea, I gained an insight into why people would volunteer for such work. A young man first-timer said he just wanted to learn. Some had retired from their property and Roving Restorers gives them an opportunity to continue working with the land. I overheard a woman say, “We came off land and into suburbia. We need this. All care and no responsibility.” During the morning tea wrap-up, Susie mentioned upcoming events including a weed-vine workshop and projects such as the building of nest boxes. She reassured the group and Sally, who feels

overwhelmed at the magnitude of the task: “The work that Sally’s doing is really valuable because a lot of our work is focused on making the forest healthier. The plantings to make those connections is a key part. “Things are well on the way here and there’s a framework. We can come again. This is a very valuable bit of rainforest which leads onto the eucalypt forest. It’s an important part of the landscape.” Speaking with Sally, a former investment banker working Sydney, London and New York, gave me insight into her love of this area. “I fell in love with Mary Caincross Park when I was a kid. Mum and Dad used to bring us up here from Brisbane once a year. Then, when I returned from overseas I’d always come up to Maleny for weekends. “I absolutely had no idea how hard it is to maintain a property. The previous owner did a lot of regeneration, but because it used to be cow pasture the paspalum grass is everywhere. I’m completely emotional about it. If you care then it’s a big job. “I’ve learnt about interconnectedness. What I do on my

patch impacts what happens in someone else’s area because of the creek. It’s a water source for all the landholders downstream on the Mary River so it is important to protect it.” I asked Susie Duncan how Roving Restorers choose their projects. “Sometimes I hear about properties and think that’s a critical link, it’s particularly important to wildlife so I might contact the landholder. People also ask for support. Networking is fundamental to our work. “This project is run on a shoestring budget but with willing volunteers people are rewarded in many different ways.” Roving Restorers meet twice a month and welcomes new members. Some people are natural storytellers, and Kevin and Claire English are two such people. With tales of their lives in Conondale, Maleny and Kenilworth, this couple have been through floods, beehives and tornadoes together - and they share it with a wink and a smile.

EVIN AND CLAIRE English (nee Furner) celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. Married in the Church of England, Kenilworth, they met when Kevin was 16 and Claire 15 years old. Retired to Maleny in 2011, the couple’s beginnings are woven into the fabric of Conondale’s history. Born in the old Maleny Hospital in 1944, Kevin Thomas English recounts stories from a bygone era: “The English family moved to Conondale from Eumundi in 1928. My father Thomas (Tiger) English was 14 years old. “His father and elder brother came ahead, put up a tent and worked at fencing. It took them three days.” It was vision, grit and sheer tenacity that enabled early settlers to carve out a life for their families. “Dad would plough all day, barefooted, wearing a singlet, and a hat on his bald head. He’d go from daylight ‘til dark then come home and milk. “Mum cooked, washed and helped with the milking. Women worked damned hard in those days.” Beryl English had three boys under five years when Kevin began school. Wheeling two in the pram and holding Kevin’s hand she went down the paddock, across the creek to the school where she proudly presented her son to the teacher. He broke away with his mother in hot pursuit. Beryl apprehended the youngster and marched him back only to have him escape once more. On the third attempt the teacher locked the door. School lessons were not Kevin’s forte. “What I liked about school was sport and girls! I played football, cricket and a bit of tennis. I was also a good middle-distance runner.” There was never a dull moment for the young larrikin. He seemed to attract trouble and strife with his creative thinking and entrepreneurial skills. “The Conondale shopkeeper was Mr McAndrew. He kept all the empty soft drink bottles under the shop. Every time us kids wanted lollies, I would sneak around, grab three or four bottles and cash them in to him for tuppence a bottle.” Persistence and determination was a way of life for these settlers. Kevin recalls: “Floods were common. There wasn’t a bridge between us, the main road and shop. To get supplies dad would swim his horse across the flooded creek, go to the store then swim back with the food.”

During Kevin’s youth, the local country policemen kept an eye on youngsters teaching them a lesson if needed. Apart from the fact that an Irish relative was the first to be incarcerated in Maleny jail, Kevin also had his turn. “I was 15 when a mate and I blew up the policeman’s mailbox with tuppenny bungers. He recognised us as we were running away. It was Guy Fawkes night in Maleny and so the copper locked me up until the fun was over.” Maleny Show was an annual event where where Kevin first saw Claire Furner. “Claire wore short skirts and I was a young fella who liked short skirts. I was hooked at first sight! I got to know her a week or two later.” Claire was a Kidaman Creek lass whose father grew bananas and later worked in Kenilworth’s forestry industry. She attended Kidaman Creek and Kenilworth State Schools then completed Grade 10 at Maleny High. Claire excelled in all subjects. Her first position was with the Titles Office in Brisbane. “Every Friday lunch hour I’d go to the hairdressers and get a comb-up. I had the biggest beehive hairdo! It cost me 15 shillings. I used to wobble along in my high stilettos.” A big part of the entertainment for teenagers in the 60s was local dances and pictures. Claire remembers: “We would usually go to the pictures on Saturday night and a dance or ball on a Friday night. How we loved it! Swinging around the dance floor in our high heels and full skirts. “After finishing the afternoon milking, Kevin would get to Kenilworth any way he could. If he couldn’t let a lift, he would ride his bike or walk the 15 miles through the forest just to see me.” After Kevin and Claire married and the honeymoon was over, it was back to the resourceful and resilient life of share farming. Three children over the next seven years completed the family. In 1974, when the youngest was two, Claire began work at Conondale State School two days a week as Library Aide. Her wage was two dollars an hour. She later added another three days in the same position at Kenilworth school. A year after Claire commenced work, Kevin left the life of a dairy farmer. He gained a position with Caloundra City Council. He began as a labourer and retired foreman-incharge. Sport also played an important role in the English family activities. “When the kids got to an age where they could play sport we, with another family started up junior tennis in Conondale,” shared Kevin.

In January ’94, a windstorm tore the 70-year old English family home and their lives apart. “We were on holidays when the news came. We arrived home to find the farmhouse completely wrecked. A mini tornado came through Villeneuve and the place exploded like a bomb,” said Kevin recalling the devastation. Members of the community provided shelter and essential supplies. Fundraising supported those affected by the disaster. “Tiger surveyed off a block of land for us on his property. We built there ending up with a new house and a good life down on the creek at Cookes Road,” said Claire. Kevin and Claire English have supported each other through sickness and health, through meagre times and abundant. From that time when a reserved 15-year-old girl became besotted with a cheeky 16-year-old boy whose head was turned by a short skirt, their course was set. It is aptly depicted in a quote by Maya Angelou: Love recognises no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, and penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.

But sometimes, it is through word-of-mouth that you find an artist whose work is distinct and unique. Victoria McGuin recently found one such creative soul, her name is Sue Neale and she likes feathers…

HAD HEARD the words ‘Sue Neale’ and ‘feather art’ in various conversations with local Montville and Maleny folk, and finally, a few weeks ago, I managed to pay her a visit. Sue and her husband, John, live along Balmoral Road – that picturesque stretch between Montville and Maleny – their home ‘The Shute’ sits within a garden which is a work of art in itself. I take in sweeping views across green hills to the cerulean blue ocean. The wind plays with the agapanthus and westringia, and the land is framed with jacaranda, tipuana and frangipani trees. Dollar Bird Curios and objects of faded beauty pepper the landscape: a weathered chandelier hangs from a branch, a mirror ball sits snug by a curve in the lawn, coloured lights are strung across a pergola, eye-catching jewellery adorns plants, and striking mosaics surprise. Sue herself is elegant, gracious and eloquent, with a great sense of humour and a belief in living life in the most vibrant way possible. She immediately plonks a steaming pot of coffee, scones and jam on the table as we sit down. The Shute is welcoming and eclectic, full of comfy sofas, shelves crammed with books, and walls covered in various-sized frames of paintings and sketches – some by known artists, some by family and friends. Sue shows me a Perspex-box, with a row of woompoo feathers inside: purple and green with yellow dots. “It doesn’t look real, does it? Sometimes you can hardly believe these feathers are natural.” The repetition of a feather in rows, circles, waves and spirals add to the impact in her work, which celebrates the beauty of the birds. Sue hands me another framed creation, “This is the dollar bird’s feathers, you find them in far North

Queensland. they were given that name in the 1860s, because when they flew the spots on their wings looked like the American dollar coin.” i am soon examining feathers from galas, macaws, guinea fowl, pheasant cuckoos and wedge-tail eagles. “People give and send me feathers, or i find them. i have been known to see a dead bird on the road, jump out and pull a few feathers off! “Not many people get a close-up view of these birds, and don’t realise how beautiful their feathers are until they see something like this.” in June 2015, sue’s health was seriously deteriorating. “Kidney disease runs in my family, and i knew i could never be a person on dialysis for the rest of my life. i visited three different specialists until i found one who understood that i would not live that way and needed an alternative.” sue’s husband, John, donated a kidney and she hasn’t looked back. “i was determined. i wasn’t going to shuffle around in my slippers. the staff at the hospital found it extraordinary, but i wanted to be a positive example for people considering kidney transplants. Walk tall!” sue’s friends were now encouraging her to promote her art, “but i’m hopeless at self-promotion!” she admits. “i have a had a few exhibitions so far, one in a coffee

shop in Buderim, one at Goondiwindi Arts Centre last october, one in Maryborough, and when my daughter cleared out her home in Brisbane she turned the whole ground floor into a gallery for me to exhibit.” sue believes she is considered more ‘craft’ than art, although many who see her work disagree. “it is fiddly work. i use a liquid weld to put the boxes together, and if you have one drip you spend a lot of time cleaning up, you must be very patient. “then there are the feathers… they need delicate gluing and occasional trimming, and they can curl up so easily. it is best to create simple designs, so you don’t need to fiddle, although sometimes i turn feathers into other images, like butterflies and hearts.” sue admits she would like to have another exhibition. “it’s such a buzz setting it up. the risk is terrifying, but i love working towards something. i’m just not very organised!” Will we see ‘Art with Feathers’ sometime soon on the Gallery trail? time will tell. in the meantime, sue continues to create one-off pieces for clients in New York, the UsA, the UK, dubai and europe, along with regular orders within Australia. And when she is not busy with her birds, sue tends to that magical garden – another feather in her artistic cap.

WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 1 As the dear readers would already know a Will is a document that sets out the wishes of a person regarding how that person’s estate should be distributed after death. I shall call the will-maker “the Testator” for the rest of this Article. For a Will to be valid it Must meet certain formal requirements as follows: 1. WRITING: The Will must be in writing. This means that it can be handwritten or typed. The same writing method – either handwriting or typed – must be used throughout the Will to avoid confusion. It can be made in any language but it is obviously best if it is written in English to avoid problems of translation or interpretation. 2. SIGNED: It should be signed by the Testator making the Will. A signature can also be a mark in case the person signing the Will is blind or illiterate. In circumstances where the Testator is unable to mark or sign the Will then someone else can sign on the Testator’s behalf providing firstly that the Testator is present when the Will is signed and secondly that this is disclosed in the Will. 3. DATED: the Will must be dated the day it was signed. Although a Will is effective from the date of the Testator’s death and not from the date of signing, the date of signing must appear on the Will. If the Will has no date then the witnesses may be required to swear an affidavit about the date the Will was signed. 4. WITNESSES: The Testator’s signature must be witnessed by two witnesses who must both be present when the Testator signs. It is also important that a beneficiary not witness the Testator’s signature as in a worst case scenario it could mean that any gift to that beneficiary is invalid. In my next article I shall discuss matters that Should; rather than Must; be contained in a Will.

ANGeCAre’s NeW oP sHoP at the old school House on obi obi road in Mapleton is opening 9am on Wednesday, May 2, and rangeCare’s Ceo, Jenny McCafferty, is excited. “Fundraising is becoming more-and-more important for our organisation because the way that we receive funding from the government has changed, so opening an op shop is a wonderful opportunity for our organisation,” said Jenny. Jenny explained that rangeCare can no longer use unused funds from some of its lesser-used service categories, because any unused funds in the service categories must now be returned to the government. Jenny said that for a while now, rangeCare had been exploring different fundraising options so that it could continue to meet the growing in-home, respite and social support needs of people along the Blackall range and surrounding areas. “it’s a win-win for our community because not only are we raising money to deliver much-needed services to people in need along the range, we are also contributing to other community organisations

through the rent that we pay to the Mapleton and district Community Association (MAdCA) … all while providing the community with access to good quality, pre-loved clothing and household items.” Jenny said that rangeCare is so grateful for all the volunteers who have put their hand up to work in our new shop. “this is a new venture for us – we know how to work in the community care sector; however, working in retail will be a new world for us,” said Jenny. “Having our experienced op shop Coordinator, Jennie, as well as a great team of volunteers – some of whom have worked in retail – will help with a smooth opening.” Jenny said that she was happy to hear that the sunshine Hospice, which had been operating an op shop at the old school House for many years, was able to relocate to Montville. “We wish them all the very best at their new location.”

Help make your unsealed road a priority Three roads in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will be the Þrst to beneÞt from council’s new 10-year plan to upgrade unsealed roads that have low levels of trafÞc. Kocho Rd in Image Flat, Creightons Rd south-west of Yandina and Christensens Rd in Hunchy were allocated funding in the Lower Order Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan endorsed by council in late March. Council’s Lower Order Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2016-2026 outlines new processes for the upgrade of roads carrying less than 150 people per day.

The 10-year plan allows for a lower cost option for the sealing of low traffic volume roads to a fit-for-purpose standard without compromising on safety. The plan also allows communities the opportunity to fast-track the sealing of local roads by contributing to the cost. Funding, in part or whole, can be provided by local residents together with the divisional councillor and council’s capital road works budget. I am happy to discuss this program with any residents looking to better understand the opportunities in relation to lower order roads in their local area.

Maleny locals whip up support for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

Adies FroM tHe Maleny Catholic Church have been switching on the kettle and hosting a morning tea for charity for close to a decade. the Maleny ladies will once again host an Australia’s Biggest Morning tea for a cause and pour a cuppa for around 105 guests on Friday, May 18 from 9.30am at the Maleny Catholic Church. Locals are invited to attend for a morning of tasty treats, tea and fundraising. event organiser, Moya Pullinger, said hosting a morning tea was a cause close to the heart and invited locals to attend. “everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, whether it be themselves, family or friends,” Ms Pullinger said. the morning tea is open to everyone in the community, not just those in the Church and entry is $10 per person. “What makes our event special is that the morning tea is supplied and arranged by the ladies of the Catholic parish,” continued Ms Pullinger. “they donate slices, cakes and make sandwiches to share and we have a continuous raffle of 30 prizes running that morning as well. tickets are 2 for $1 and it is the best way to fundraise. “the food is prepared by us, the decorations are hung by us and the prizes are donated from the parish which means the money raised is donated directly to Cancer Council Queensland. “over the decade we have raised approximately $15,000, it is a lot of work but it’s all powered by volunteers and donations. “this year the theme will be a daffodil theme to raise awareness for all cancers,” she said. the official day to host is thursday, May 24, however anyone can host a morning tea anytime throughout April, May or June. every cuppa poured and dollar raised enables Cancer Council to continue investing in lifesaving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs. to host an event, or donate, visit biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. Our Hinterland schools are pretty special, and some of them have relatively new principals to steer them forward. We thought it would be interesting to talk to the person at the helm, and this month it’s Principal Adam Montgomery, from Montville State School. How are your family with the move to this area? My wife Sarah and I have two children, Max 12 and Ella 10, and we live at Mountain Creek where we have been based since I transferred back to the Sunshine Coast area five years ago. They have enjoyed eating at some of the local cafes and restaurants and visiting the wide variety of shops, but our favourite Montville experience so far has been walking through the national park and swimming at Kondalilla Falls. 1. What do you do on your days off? Saturday mornings you will find me cheering on Max and Ella at the hockey fields where they play junior hockey. I am a member at Headland Golf Club so I try and get a round in on Saturday afternoons. On Sunday the family and I try to get down to one of the local beaches for a swim and a surf. 2. Is this your first Principal role?

From Coconut Island in the Torres Strait, Hamilton Island, Gundiah, Kenilworth, Amamoor and now in beautiful Montville. 3. Why did you choose to become an educator? I really am not sure why, but I have always wanted to be a primary school teacher. In Year 10, I requested to be placed in a primary school for my work experience and now I have been teaching for 18 years. As a teacher you invest so much of yourself in your students that when they succeed you really feel a genuine sense of accomplishment and pride. I feel very blessed to have the honour and privilege of being a teacher and a principal. 4. What are the strengths of the school community? We have students that are genuinely delightful, staff that are warm, caring and professional, parents that are engaged and a wider community that is ready and willing to offer assistance when required. Make wooden critters, learn hand-held woodcarving, spoon carving or even boomerang making over this popular weekend of all things wood! This year the Expo are also excited to present Romanian guest artisan, Zina Burloiu, who will be imparting the traditional skills of chip carving. And for those who are concerned about the environmental impact of the Expo, they adhere to the Sustainable Timber Policy - all wood artisans and exhibitors are required to work in sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. The Maleny Wood Expo is an alcohol-free family event with something for people of all ages. Younger Wood Expo attendees can get creative in a free workshop with the Blackall Range Woodcrafters’ Guild and the Maleny Men’s Shed. There will even be some simple projects for the very little people under the age of five with no bookings required. Kids of all ages can learn from experienced woodcrafters and use real tools to try their hand at furniture making at the Cool Stool School. There are native plants and local Maleny produce to purchase, natural resource management displays and much more. Maleny Arts Council announce a festival

ALENY ARTS COUNCIL will hold a Winter Theatre Festival this year, a move initiated by new president Peter Lavery. To be held in August and September it will showcase three theatre productions, including two new plays with indigenous themes. Peter Lavery is also the Arts Council’s program director and was elected as president at their recent AGM. Peter began his career as a professional actor with La Boite and Twelfth Night in Brisbane and at the famous Sam Wannamaker’s Globe in London, before moving into academia at QUT where he became the Director of Precincts and Cultural Assets.

After his retirement he came to Maleny with wife, Jacqueline, a lecturer in drama education before becoming a botanical artist. The members elected Kerry Milhner to the position of secretary. Kerry also had a background in theatre and musical theatre. Long-standing treasurer, John Marsden, is the third member of the executive whose background is in accounting and banking, and he is also a member of the Maleny Players and the Maleny Singers. In addition to the Winter Festival, Peter shared, “We begin with Lyall Brooks in a one-man political thriller on May 27 and we finish the year with Mikelangelo and the songs of Cave, Waits, Cohen on October 21.”

ALENY HAS EVENTS each May to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) for Maleny and Sunshine Coast Hinterland LGBTIQ people and their friends. This May you are invited to ‘Reflections’, an exhibition by international photographer Heather Faulkner which revisits Maleny’s first IDAHOT in 2012, and opens at Sarah’s Unplugged on May 17 - June 13. What happens when a photographer asks people to write all over their work of art? For a group in Maleny it was an occasion to recall and mark the first time that the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) was celebrated on the Sunshine Coast.

Cale are included in the Saturday program and several art studios will be open to the public over the weekend as part of the Gympie Gallery Studio Trails. The closing celebrations on Sunday July 8 will showcase the Thunderbird Demolition People’s Choice Award and Youth Award presentations, with food vans and markets, live music, art demonstrations, kids’ art and a licensed bar. To capitalise on the three-day event, you can purchase

a weekend pass which gives you unlimited entry to the Imbil Public Hall and surrounds. The festival attracts many local and South-East Queensland professional and amateur artists and draws sponsorship from local business, who gain exposure to wider markets as a result. At a social level, it continues to hold its place as one of the key cultural events on the Mary Valley calendar.

is in Maleny Photographer Heather Faulkner explains that this approach to her work is to balance the power dynamic between the photographer and her subjects, but more importantly, to invite new interpretations of the work. In this process, she invited those who were involved in the first IDAHOT to share memories around some of the images from that time, and by writing on them re-image and reimagine the work. AYne MAlkin is a professional artist and is, with his wife Tracey, the owner of Montville Art Gallery.

Waves, surf and the sea have been the subjects of his long-term series of paintings. Many of them are large scale and all of them painted with great detail and in a photorealist style. Artworks from the series have won major awards and commissions. Wayne says his focus is on the play of light on the water. “The ocean is a constantly changing combination of reflections, sunlight and shadow and the translucency of the water itself.” He spends many hours watching the movement of water, photographing and videoing the surf and then transferring the essence of his observations on to canvas. “i will never run out of subject matter”. He is happy to discuss your artwork requirements, in your home or business, and can provide in-home viewing and consultations regarding hanging.

the reflection Gallery in the montville Uniting Church currently features photographs taken by Graham Warne of Palmwoods. Quiet Places invites visitors to the gallery to bathe in the serenity of the transition from night to day. Graham believes, “it is in the silence and stillness of those times that we discover our true selves and the presence of God”. he bought his first camera when he left home aged 16 to attend the teachers’ College in armidale nsW and has pursued photography as a hobby ever since. after years spent as a school teacher, pastor, missionary, theological college lecturer and registrar he retired to nambour and later moved to Palmwoods.

ime WarP Festival in Palmwoods has announced a huge band line-up for the may 6 festivities, including the sugar shakers, the Craig madden Band and Jewells & the Wolfe Pack. Just three years after starting life as a private event for ricks Garage, celebrating Kustom Kulture and the 1950s, the event has become a local institution. along with a day of rockabilly music, attendees will be able to admire more than 100 classic cars, and 200 classic bikes. registrations are still available for those with a car worth showing off. there will also be plenty for the kids to enjoy, with reptile handling from Wildlife hQ, face painting, jumping castles, and of course, the music. aleny neiGhBOUrhOOd Centre has been involved in suicide prevention for more than 12 months now. the aim of our maleny Wellbeing Group, is to educate as many locals as possible with tools and resources around suicide Prevention. the last session was facilitated by lifeline trainer susan Griffith, who addressed local issues and included a simple method to engage with people at risk and connect them with resources that can carry out a full-scale intervention. safetalk is a three-hour training workshop. Feedback from the participants was extremely positive, most felt it was a very worthwhile workshop and came away equipped to talk to someone at risk of suicide. the session helped identify the signs when assistance is being sought, role play and other interactive activities were found to be quite useful by those attending. maleny Wellbeing Group through maleny neighbourhood Centre are taking bookings for the next safetalk, being held in maleny again on may 19, 9.30am – 12.30pm, $15 (cash only please), so please come and participate in this valuable workshop.

OU Can Plant without tree Guards, but when it comes to revegetating large areas they can be a valuable aid in protecting the time and money you have invested in your tubestock. tree Guards protect your young trees from several threats including: a) Weeds - why can’t our trees grow that fast as well? b) Weeding -oops did i just brush-cut my tree? c) Frost cold enough to freeze your leaves off! and finally d) grazing animals - always up for a free feed! there are a wide range of Guards available on the market from Polyurethane Bags, Cardboard Guards and Coreflute Guards. at Brush turkey enterprises we’ve been experimenting with many over the years but have settled on two types of Guards that we are very happy with. at the bottom end of the scale we use a 2 ltr Juice Carton. these guards are quick to install, cheap and provide short term protection for fast growing trees. We use these with a bamboo stake and this combination can provide good visibility for your planted stock, if the weeds get away over the summer. they only last about 6 months and are only 300mm high, so don’t provide much protection from grazing animals. For plants that we really want to look after and make sure they get off to a good start, we use the Pink tree Guards. these

esPite an OCCasiOnal outbreak of hot weather, it should start cooling down from now on and with all the rain we’ve had, planting conditions are good to excellent. some weeds need more drastic control measures, but many can be pulled out by the roots, never to set seed again. time to finish planting landholder environment Grant areas, for those fortunate landholders who received a grant last year, or to plant another land for Wildlife connector. the garden no doubt needs attention also; weeding, general maintenance and some strategic pruning. it’s a great time of year to be outside. a recent Barung workshop by Greg smyrell emphasised the importance of understanding soil types and the vegetation communities they support. experiment with plants which are visually appealing, but experiments don’t always give us the outcomes we might like or expect; ask any scientist. note the successes and repeat those species, not to the exclusion of all else as diversity is very important, but you will

find that there are key species suited to your land that are different from the key species on other soil types. there will be overlaps but the remnant rainforest on the red soils of the maleny Plateau differs substantially from the drier remnants of the eastern side of the escarpment on basalt colluvium. slightly further east and often underlying the basalt are the landsborough sandstone derived soils which support eucalypt forest. Between the two, wet eucalypt forest with a thick understorey of ferns, vines and palms might be found in moist gullies and valleys. We live in a diverse and fascinating part of the world, hence the remarkable diversity of birds and other wildlife which it is so important to retain and encourage for the enjoyment of our children and grandchildren.

Landscapes with LOORS LANDSCAPING Retaining Walls (choosing the right timber) NE OF THE most frequently asked questions when faced with the dilemma of using either treated pine or treated hardwood to construct a timber retaining wall is how long will it last? The answer to this question isn’t at all universal and may vary considerably depending on the particular location and exposure the wall endures during its lifetime. Generally speaking, both treated pine and treated hardwood that has been treated to a H4 standard or above (a rating which deems the timber suitable for external and in ground use) should last equally as long. This being said, the longevity of the retaining wall itself, exclusive of

natural degradation within the timber depends entirely on the quality of construction, ie; timber sizing, hole depths, drainage, fixings, quantity of unsettled backfill and post spacings etc. Key design factors as those above are essential to consider when planning a timber retaining wall and can each individually become the

Keeping in mind that there are other factors to consider such as personal preference in aesthetics between the two timbers, cost and ease of use, and perhaps one of the most pivotal being the availability of quality sustainably grown timbers. Unlike pine, Hardwood is not a sustainable plantation grown timber which has made quality landscape grade hardwood increasingly harder to source. Being more cost effective and easily available, pine might seem like the best option and may just well be but don't rule out a combination of both timbers where load on the wall is a key factor.

ith this artiCle i pay homage to the majestic Blue Quandong, eleaocarpus angustifolius. it is probably the fastest growing endemic tree species we have on the plateau, and they get hUGe, quickly. i have seen one over 50 metres tall in a gulley in the Connondale ranges. in summer they produce large bright-blue fruit a bit smaller than a golf ball. inside the fruit is a thin layer of flesh, and an attractive, very hard seed with an interesting brain-like pattern on its surface. the local people would bury the fruit in river sand where the darkness would trigger an enzyme that

rendered the flesh a little more edible. the seeds were strung together to make necklaces and other adornments. to support their massive height, they develop an amazing system of buttress roots that radiate out from the trunk like the tentacles of a ligneous

OrrelatiOn is nOt CaUsatiOn. the scientific method instructs us that events which may often occur simultaneously or in close succession are not necessarily connected, let alone actually resulting in one another. so it is probably no more than coincidence that newspoll usually seems to improve for the government when parliament is not sitting, and to get better still when malcolm turnbull is out of the country. after all, we are constantly assured that our current Prime minister is the last, best hope for the coalition, so it would seem logical to display him as frequently as possible in the most media-friendly circumstances, and nothing attracts the commentariat like question time in the house of representatives. and yet a disillusioned and dysfunctional backbench is increasingly coming to the conclusion that turnbull is in fact part of the problem; that the voters have simply stopped listening to him. they fear that the punters feel positive relief when their leader shuts up, when the confected outrage, the bullshit and bluster, the schoolboy taunts about Bill shorten cease for a couple of weeks while they take stock. and when they do, the news is not too horrible: wages are still down in the cesspool, but there are signs that things might finally improve, and that no thanks to the politicians, the increase in commodity profits and hence company taxes means that there will be tax relief for some real people as opposed to the corporate geniuses who are bringing us the royal Commission. thus, scott morrison can make a virtue out of his latest backflip, and claim that the universal medicare levy rise to pay for the ndis is really not needed after all and can instead be tossed into the basket of goodies he is preparing for the budget. in some ways this looks more like desperation than serious policy; the medicare levy needs to be raised as a more or less politically painless measure, not just to secure the ndis but to help fund the ballooning cost of our health system over all. Of course, nominating a tax rise for a designated purpose is always a con; all tax goes into consolidated revenue for morrison and his apparatchiks to dole out wherever and whenever they feel inclined. however, that has not stopped morrison, turnbull and many of their lesser acolytes that the new tax was

absolutely necessary to save the ndis from the penury from which Julia Gillard’s government had consigned it and that shorten was leaving the blind, the crippled, the halt and the lame to die in misery if he did not endorse it. We now know that this was not true, that the funding was always a matter of priorities, and given that the levy had no hope of passing the senate in its original form, it was sensible politics to dump it. there are enough distractions already, as the daily horror stories from the royal Commission continue to unfold and will likely do so, right up to the election. and on this front turnbull is doing the best he can, but frankly it isn’t all that much. his fall-back position seems to be that he initially resisted the inquiry because he wanted to put other reforms in place first; thus the forgettable tweaking of asiC, aPra, and the lectures to the banking executives, all proving in the end to have been completely ineffectual. But the point is that if turnbull was determined to push ahead with them, there was nothing to stop him from starting up the royal Commission at the same time. Only last week morrison introduced serious legislation while the Commission was sitting: there was no suggestion that he should have to wait until it produced its findings. and during the previous royal Commission into the unions, the government was celebrating the new laws it was introducing with no restraint at all. turnbull has at last admitted that delaying it, mainly because it was the idea of the Greens, then adopted by labor, was a mistake, but it seems that he is still unsure what to do next. For starters, who is to pay and for what. it is now being argued by the remaining supporters of the wayward banks that inflicting drastic penalties on them would be a form of overkill: either they would simply pass on the costs to their hapless customers or they would have to reduce their dividends to their innocent shareholders.

Out and About

But hang on, are the shareholders really so innocent? Presumably they knew the banks were bastards – everyone else did – when they invested their hard-earned savings. But they hoped for rewards, and for a long time they got them. But now, as it has emerged that the banks were involved in fraud, theft, perjury and heaven knows what other shenanigans, it appears that at least some of those welcome dividends were the proceeds of crime –the shareholders were the receivers of stolen goods. no one is seriously suggesting that shareholders should give them back, but perhaps they could be persuaded to accept a small haircut in the immediate aftermath. similarly, the apologists want to separate the Commission from morrison’s cherished corporate tax cuts: we should not, they tell us sternly, think of imposing some kind of morality tax. Well actually almost all our laws are based on morality – or at least we thought they were; their aim is to protect the public from harm in various forms. that is why we put ordinary criminals (but seldom corporate ones) in jail. so, the withdrawal of a huge tax bonanza could be seen as a hefty fine for misconduct, which seems entirely legitimate. and this dilemma will remain the heart of the budget: can turnbull afford to give the impression that he is rewarding the banks? next week’s budget will tell the story – and also the next newspoll. and the debate that follows will show us whether the glimmers of hope that appeared while turnbull was overseas will translate into a genuine recovery. and if the past is any guide, the mob will not be impressed if turnbull reverts to form and uses parliament as a platform for his Kill Bill strategy. if he does, and the following newspolls mark him down, then the backbenchers may decide that he is unable to change by himself, so perhaps they will reluctantly have to act in sheer self preservation. Correlation is not causation, but there are definitely times when absence makes the heart grow fonder. and, it can appear, make newspoll kinder. 3. Practice good hygiene. Getting vaccinated doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get the flu, but it greatly reduces the risk. Good hygiene can stop the spread of infection to other vulnerable groups, including babies too young to get immunised.

4. Post-flu-shot symptoms are normal. the flu vaccine is not a live vaccine, which means you can’t catch the flu from the shot. Common side-effects relate to the vaccine stimulating the immune system. however, if you continue to feel unwell after a flu shot, speak to your local GP.

5. NDIS will be life changing says local disability chief the Children’s therapy Centre is leading the charge, ensuring they are ready for the arrival of the national disability insurance scheme. the ndis was expected to begin on the sunshine Coast and Gympie from 1 January 2019, but some activities are already underway. services are also provided in homes, at school and in community settings. therapists treat children and young people from birth to 18 years with developmental delays, disabilities and health conditions. Children’s therapy Centre’s debbie Blumel was recruited to the CeO role more than two years ago to manage the transition to the ndis model. “Our main aim is to offer sunshine Coast families a

one-stop shop for all the therapies that clients need,” said ms Blumel. “each client has a key worker who liaises with the family and ensures that speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and psychology services are available when and where required.”

hese days We are bombarded with noise and information from all directions. turn on the computer to access your emails Wendy Rosenfeldt and you are confronted with the latest news and celebrity gossip, send an email and ads pop up from any website you may have browsed reminding you that you didn’t finish your shopping, incoming calls, text messages and calendar reminders randomly go off throughout the day. there is jarring music in shopping centres, loud ads when you are quietly filling your car with petrol, radios and stereos in cars, ipods for when you exercise. not to mention the latest technologies, cars that beep if you haven’t put your seatbelt on, screens to show you how close you are to nearby cars when you are backing into a park, a voice over caution if you go over the speed limit…. Keeping the mind over stimulated but under used. the latest technological devices are replacing our ability to remember, the capacity to stay focused while driving and distracting our more subtle thought processes by continuous noise. Problems are often solved when we allow ourselves some inner quiet. traditionally people say “sleep on it” when we are faced with a tough decision. While scientists have been proving this for years, psychologists have recently affirmed that eureka moments involve being stuck with a problem and then relaxing the mind or letting go. archimedes is famous for solving the problem of whether King hiero’s crown was made of pure gold. he was just about to take a relaxing bath when the solution came to him so he ran through the streets naked shouting “eureka!”

how much of our inner dialogue is coming from within and how much of our thoughts are just a conglomeration of all the external noise around us. did we really feel the need to lose weight and buy a new wardrobe before we saw the latest celebrity fashions? did we really think about buying new furniture before we heard the ad for 50% off everything in store but only for today. not only are we cluttering up our minds with useless information we are drowning out our creativity and inspiration with the predilection for constant information and entertainment. imagination comes more freely when the mind is left to itself. to reconnect with yourself turn off the radio while driving, exercise without the pounding music in your ears, spend a quiet evening without the chatter of the television and for younger people take time away from the computer games, social media and web surfing. silence is golden but for some it can feel uncomfortable as it allows the barrage of worries, regrets, emotional pain and sabotaging thoughts to intrude. however constant distraction won’t solve the problem and it will rear its ugly head at some point causing physical, emotional or mental imbalance. transcendental meditation takes you to the quietest level of the mind beyond all thinking. it provides the technique to go beyond the busyness of everyday life, releasing the emotional charge of difficult situations so when you come out you are more at peace with life. so many wonderful inspired individuals who are courageously working to manifest a better world and who are sharing their love and improving life for those less fortunate than themselves. there are advances in all areas of healing and science that give us so much hope for a healthier tomorrow. there are individuals who are opening up extraordinary gifts that have laid dormant in the human body and mind, yet rarely does this make headlines. i sat with some children last week and showed them a good news network and without exception the first thing i noticed was that they exhaled, their bodies relaxed with joy and they were so happy. these are the things that create health and well being. We won’t create a better world by making it more complicated and divorced from nature and we won’t heal our bodies by pumping more vitamins and energy drinks. We will rise up victoriously when we stop and rest, move away for a little while from all our wonderful technology and attune ourselves with that which is seeking expression from within. Are you preparing for hip or knee replacement surgery ?

OUr sUrGeOn and rehab team are critical to your success, but they would also say you are just as important to your outcome! dr mike evans says there are five key things you need to know about a hip or knee replacement: 1) the stronger your muscles are around the joint, and the fitter you are in advance of the surgery, the better you’ll do. develop a routine to build up your muscle and flexibility with your physiotherapist. 2) managing expectations – most of you will be back to walking, with assistance, the following day. moving might be painful, but the outcomes are better if you work with your rehab and nursing team – motion is lotion! more movement means less blood clots, less chance of pneumonia, more independence. your physiotherapist will help with walking aids and mobility. 3) you might need pain control for 6-12 weeks after the operation. swelling can last for several months after surgery, so elevate your leg and avoid sitting/standing in one place for long periods of time. Bruising is normal, talk to your rehab team or doctor if you feel overwhelmed. also, ask your physiotherapist about ways to help with reducing the swelling.
