Book lovers you don’t have to wait until Celebration of Books 2015, HT’s debbie Blackley takes you on an adventure as she journeys form Kenilworth to Maleny and rediscovers her favourite bookshops.

We present the cases for and against the NBN Towers proposed for the hinterland, and receive good news about the Maleny Community Precinct.

T WAs WiTH pleasure that Heatley Gilmore accepted wins at the Queensland Country Press Association awards last month.

"We had such big shoes to fill. For three years running now, The Hinterland Times has won the Best Newspaper in Queensland. We were hoping to return from Brisbane with some gongs.”

And they did. The Hinterland Times took out Technical Excellence - circulation 5000 and up to 20 000 and the Gilmore’s other publication, the Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News took out first place for “Most improved Newspaper”.

Business director, Heatley with his background in marketing was chuffed, “We also achieved second and third positions for some of our advertising campaigns, which was thrilling considering we were up against some of Queensland's largest regional publications.”

“When told there were many more entries than previous years and we were just a whisker off winning first place for advertising campaigns in the state, i was really happy.”

The award is for a series of three or more advertisements, judging criteria included relevance to target market, strength of campaign theme, visual appeal, clear continuous sales message, reinforcement of offer, originality and creativity. “our little monthly papers went head-to-head with bi-weekly and weekly newspapers, run by major national newspaper companies. it is hard to describe the scale of the win, considering the competition and all their resources.”

Judges commented on the visual appeal and creativity of the advertising. Heatley has drawn on his years in advertising departments to help local business get their advertisements right.

The wins were a reflection on their wonderful team, graphic designers and writers plus the support received from the community.

With a new exhibition coming up, Maleny artist Peter Hudson invites Victoria McGuin to his studio to talk about his ‘Family’ portrait of the Glasshouse Mountains, and the inspiration behind it.

HEN i WAs AsKEd to interview artist Peter Hudson, i perused of some of his previous work beforehand. vivid character portraits, full of depth and life; landscapes exploring the raw beauty and mystery of the mountains; fish swimming up to the moon; dreamy aerial views of cows on hillsides. These images, to me, were fascinating, visceral and often magical; so i set off with enthusiasm to meet the man behind the paint brushes.

Turning up at Peter’s place in Maleny i was greeted by a friendly cat. And that was it. i called “Hellooo!� gently at the doors and windows. still nothing. so, i quietly wandered through the garden and, just when i was about to give up, i found myself facing a studio down a grassy slope with

various large sculptures dotted across the lawn. And there, thankfully, was Peter, greeting me with a warm smile and a wave.

Peter’s studio is how you may imagine an artist’s space to be. Huge frames and canvasses stacked high; current work resting about the place on easels; splats of ancient paint everywhere; an old, well-loved chair; the radio quietly murmuring in the background; views to an undulating natural garden, full of trees and wildlife. i immediately liked it. Especially the quote from Kurt vonnegut, taped to a bookcase, “We are here on Earth to fart around, and don’t let anybody tell you different.”

Peter’s exhibition is called ‘The Elephant in the Room’ and opens in November at the Woolloongabba Art Gallery in Brisbane. As i looked at the group of works to be included, i immediately recognised the breathtaking Glasshouse Mountains.

Peter explained, “For some time i’ve wanted to include the twelve Glasshouse Mountains together in one painting. The impetus for this work is the ancient Aboriginal story about this group of mountains being a family; a mother, father, grandmother and children, all about to flee an approaching disaster. in the painting ‘Family,’ each panel is essentially a portrait of the individual members of Tibrogargan’s big family.” so, why the ‘elephant’ in the exhibition title? “We all rely on landscape for everything; yet we are hell-bent on abusing it.

We don’t respect it. Not enough people know, and we should know. That is the elephant in the room.” He gestured to his two elephant paintings, “one of these will be in the exhibition as my elephant.”

Peter believes artists and writers are compelled to correct history, a role he takes seriously in his own work. Back in 2009 he went bush to Uluru with singer/songwriter shane Howard to collaborate on a book discussing Aboriginal rights.

He also travelled to Galiwinku and Elcho island and slept under the stars with Neil Murray (Warumpi Band founder), to create paintings for a book based on Murray’s anthem, My island Home.

A passionate advocate for ‘plein air’ painting, Peter is happiest outside, “especially in the Australian light.” He thinks this is probably due to his upbringing in Western Queensland. His father worked in airport Communications; so they lived near the airports outside of town and this

meant he was always playing in the open air, enjoying nature.

After years of study, experimentation and work in art, jewellery design and music, Peter moved to Maleny where he decided to devote himself full-time to his art and painting.

This is a place where he is, “driven to respond to the landscape…..and i like to present a new way of looking at the same thing.” ironically, despite his love for landscape, Peter believes he is more well-known for his portraiture work. indeed, his paintings of Paul Kelly, Neil Murray, Chad Morgan and Gus George are stunning, vivid and full of life – with his Kelly portrait a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2007 and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, who own four of his portraits.

Peter has noticed, however, that all his portraits are people, “who talk, write and sing about Place.” His strong connection to the land is still there, through his subjects. so, back to the upcoming exhibition. Peter feels very positive about it, as much of his subject matter is a return to his Hinterland home, after a good few years painting other landscapes. “For two years i tried to paint this, but each time the weather beat me. This year, i started in February and lucked out.”

There is a quote from Ewan Macleod in the gallery invitation, which beautifully sums up this group of works, “He treads softly but is able to get inside the landscape and put this connection onto the canvas.” Being in the studio with these paintings, i completely agree.

As we wind up our conversation, i take a few ‘snaps’ of the studio and Peter laughs, pointing at a wicker basket overflowing with clothes, “Would you believe, i tidied up because i knew you were coming?”

The art and conversation was so fascinating that i hadn’t even noticed. if Peter continues to paint and create, and care, the way he does, i hope his tidying up always takes a back seat.

Old Friends, New Beginnings

There is something very special about listening to Hinterland locals reminisce, especially when those locals are in their 90th year with so much history to share. Thanks to the recent Centenary celebrations at St Mary’s Church in Montville, two old friends were reunited, and rekindled a friendship which began in the 1920s.

Two months later, a morning tea was orchestrated by Mapleton resident Christine Long, and I was welcomed to the home of Dawne and Tony Barnett in Montville, along with Hazel Smith (nee Short) and Christine, to hear some tales from times past.

Happily ensconced with tea and ‘cheesies’ (bread, cheese and butter baked for four hours in the oven), with a frogmouth owl perched outside the window, I listened to the memories flow.

B

oTH BoRN iN 1925, dawne Barnett (nee Brown) and Hazel first met as little girls. They attended the sunday school and were Confirmed at st Mary’s Church in Montville together. in fact, it was dawne’s father, George, who was the driving force behind the building of the church and was given the honour to name it.

He chose st Mary’s after a place in York, England, where he was born. For half a century, this genial Yorkshireman took services in Montville, as well as officiating across the Range as a licensed lay reader on his “free” sundays.

Christine, who is writing a history of st Mary’s, adds how everyone always talked about George’s achievements, but dawne’s mother, Ruth, was also a backbone for the community. dawne agrees, “she was good at being a companion, talking to women who were isolated. she eventually had a little car so she could drive about and see people, and she was very upset when she got older and had to stop using it.”

Hazel was also born and bred in Montville. Her father, an engine driver in Brisbane, decided to move up here.

“Everyone thought he and my mother were mad, living in a small cottage on Western Road with five children,” Hazel smiles.

“We had no hot water, no electricity and no phone. We lived off the farm. Whatever we grew, we ate. We had to walk

across the paddock to school and sometimes a new calf would chase us!”

Tony grins and adds, “i remember hearing children all walking out to school on miles of dirt track, picking yellow raspberries off the side of the road. some were only six years old…..They can’t do that now. it’s sad how those simple things have changed.”

Tony himself ended up here in the 1940s, thanks to his father and a friend buying a pineapple farm in Palmwoods. He joined the Palmwoods Tennis Club, and often came across dawne representing the Montville Tennis Club. “one thing led to another, and in 1950 we got married in st Mary’s.”

Tennis was definitely popular, with Hazel’s family building a tennis court on their land, “it was to amuse the family, and so other families had somewhere to come.” it is clear that the distance was a hindrance when it came to nurturing friendships, so the enticement of a tennis court would help. Children usually had to go home straight after school; often to help in the house, get wood for the fire, sweep up, and tend to the needs of the farms.

Although the girls both attended Montville state school, their lives veered off in different directions soon after. dawne went to school in Brisbane, staying with an Aunt during term time.

Hazel headed down the mountain to Nambour. “i never knew how i would get to school,” she says. “i had to find my own way and catch a ride with whoever was going. it was usually the fruit growers who would take me down to Palmwoods and then i’d catch the train to Nambour.”

After the school years, dawne returned to Montville where she married Tony and worked on their farm. Hazel went into nursing at the Royal Brisbane and ended up working at selangor. it was during her time there that she nursed Rod smith back to health after he had an operation for a football injury.

The saturday dances in Nambour followed, where all the footballers went, according to Hazel. soon after she married Rod, “The nicest man in Nambour.”

laugh at shared memories is a real pleasure. The ‘interview’ has given them a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together, and the hugs and kisses when it is time to say goodbye are heart-warming.

Caretakers of

Mount Mellum

Following in the footsteps of those gone before is a group of neighbours who are co-operatively and individually transforming their portion of Mount Mellum into a nature refuge. They are establishing a shared living culture with their environment, one that is being echoed in communities locally and globally.

H

ARMoNioUs CoNNECTioN to the land and caretaking of the land so that it may be preserved and passed onto future generations are central values binding ancient traditional communities. They provided a living cultural knowledge that is passed down from generation to generation. seven properties are involved in this endeavour to preserve the land, the caretakers of which present different facets of perspective and passion, including identifying and recording plant types; weeding out invasive and noxious species; knowing what to plant and where; being familiar with, and supporting, the insects and wildlife.

Four years ago, ian and Chrissie McMaster were living a semi-retired lifestyle in the city. Then it came time to move.

“We looked for about two years and fell in love with this area. We found exactly the right property that had a vast array of different vegetation types, different micro climates, rainforest, eucalypt forest…there’s Landsborough sandstone down the bottom with creeks, gullies with these fabulous palms…” said Chrissie with a sense of awe evident in her voice.

The couple shared that they had been looking for a smallish block, perhaps twenty or thirty acres, but a sense of excitement and a feeling of belonging drew them to their Mount Mellum property of 150 acres. They have since purchased the adjoining property of 110 acres for the

purpose of revegetation and preservation. soon after settling on the mountain, ian and Chrissie joined Land for Wildlife, a local council endeavour that brings together like-minded landholders to share skills and knowledge about nature conservation.

“We’d heard about these neighbours who were doing really interesting work changing an old degraded dairy farm that had all the nasty grasses, barbed wire and junk through it and were turning it into rainforest,” said Chrissie.

The knowledge of what had been achieved inspired the couple to want to meet all their neighbours and so a house warming party provided the catalyst. The outcome was that they realised they had much in common, the crossconnections served to enthuse and so, a loosely structured cooperative was born.

“The story is not about us. it’s about the community…that a sense of community can develop in a group of people who are relatively new to each other but with a common theme that builds a level of cooperative work that you normally don’t see in local communities. it is really exciting to see that develop,” said ian.

These sentiments are echoed by Luit Pater, “For me it is all about our community here on top of the mountain. it is how we work towards a similar goal in life to a better balance with the nature surrounding our places. Personally, it is about building a small corridor for native species so that they can

roam around. A fallen tree or new paths into the rainforest are a bonus.”

Chrissie tells of another neighbour Annie Potter, who deliberately let trees in the gully grow up creating a wildlife habitat even though they obscure her view. Chrissie and Annie volunteer at Barung Landcare.

The voluntary Conservation Agreement (vCA) also features in the preservation of some of these properties.

They are a way of conserving our natural heritage. Through the vCA program, council supports landholders to permanently protect significant areas of privately owned bushland and offers some financial support to do so.

Paul and Melissa Prociv had an area of virtually pristine rainforest in a gully and decided to put that into a vCA. “From our eyrie, we could plainly see the devastation caused by rampant development leaving fragmented isolated pockets of forest at the expense of corridors for wildlife and green zones for people,” said Paul.

Following their neighbours lead, ian and Chrissie are now in the process of setting forty of their sixty hectares aside for a nature refuge. “There’ll be habitat there for wildlife and all of the special plants that live here in perpetuity…a forever forest” said ian.

Paul and Melissa were thrilled when ian and Chrissie McMaster moved into the neighbourhood. “it was great to discover that we weren’t the only crazies up our end of Mount Mellum! Their energy, interest and strong sense of community have served as a powerful catalyst, so just about everyone at this end of our street now is collectively fired up

about conserving our special natural wonderland here. With our new forest growing, we have witnessed a massive increase in bird numbers and variety, plus a return of wallabies and goannas,” shared Paul.

Gratitude is expressed for the support of the sunshine Coast Regional Council and their enthusiastic Land for Wildlife officers who assist with education, give practical ideas, moral support and introduce members to like-minded people throughout the region. Their ongoing input is regarded as priceless and an essential boost for the caretakers of Mount Mellum.

s A LovER oF BooKs, i can’t think of a better way to spend a day on the range then to travel from one end to the other in search of a great book to add to my collection.

Tucked in the corner of Affordable on Elizabeth, a gift, accessory and jewellery store in Kenilworth, is a collection of handpicked, quirky and inspirational books. When asked whether eBook technology has made a difference to her book sales, store owner Toni says with passion, “There is nothing like holding a book… and enjoying it.” driving through Flaxton, the next discovery is Elements at Montville on Kondalilla Falls Road.

Tear your eyes away from the beautiful view and you will find gorgeous, chic and colourful coffee table books. displayed amongst artwork, china and vases, the books hold their own as special pieces you would be proud to display. on Montville Main street, at Cadman Cottage, they have a large selection of titles on Mind, Body and spirit, whilst Elle’s Kids & Co has cheery, bright kids’ books to encourage the young readers. Popular toy shop, Amazen! also has a corner dedicated to fun and colourful books, with positive messages. set back from the main street, you will find RARE (Retro Alloy Restoration Emporium), which has cool, old and collectible books, including medical journals, sports books and old car manuals. it was here that i added to my collection - an old edition of The Wizard of oz by Frank Baum. Part of the Publisher’s message inside read, “A distinguished addition to all home libraries.”

Maleny is a book lovers paradise, starting with op shops, Lifeline and Endeavour, who deliver some nostalgic ‘finds,’ as well as old trashy novels, whilst the Maleny Co-op have helpful books and Cds on health and meditation.

Walking into Maleny Book store, you feel that the shelves are full of literary treasure and, in fact, some of their oldest books date back to the early 1800s. second-hand books sourced from book fairs, garages sales, or the public, are lovingly cleaned and displayed, ready to be rediscovered.

“When you go searching to buy books for re-sale, it’s like a treasure hunt”, explains Chris. With her husband, steven, they organise the ‘outspoken’ series which invites selected

authors to visit Maleny and hold a public conversation about their writing, their lives and literature that inspires them.

Ps: Books is my next stop, which has gained a reputation for cult collections sought out by Brisbane day trippers, especially students who travel to Maleny just to explore his latest finds. Peter from ps:Books can spend 300-400 kms in the car every week searching for titles to add to his shelves, “i get excited over books that i know are unusual or rare.”

Peter enjoys the fact that it is often the children that lead the way into his store, persuading their parents into a new storybook or two.

The definitive book store in my day on the Range has to be Rosetta Books. it’s a welcoming experience walking in, with the smell of good coffee, beautiful timber bookshelves and sleek spines just begging to be taken from the shelf and enjoyed. There are a scattering of arm chairs, so you can order a coffee from the huge brass coffee machine and explore the section that holds your interest.

The owner, Ann, selects her titles from the big distributors, but local writers are also displayed in prominent positions, with book launches held for their new publications. The staff in Rosetta also write little referrals and summaries of the books they themselves read and display them on the shelves.

With such a personal touch it’s not surprising that so many locals trust their taste and feedback.

When asked what makes Rosetta Books different, Peta says “it’s got that cosy feel, but feels like a book shop that belongs in the city or a bigger town. We get a lot of people surprised to find the quality of this book store in a little town like Maleny.” i agree and, yes, i added to my collection again with two local titles and a biography i have been wanting to read.

Are the best parts of your childhood achievable for your kids?

T’s EARLY sATURdAY morning and the cold winter wind burns my nose and makes my eyes water as i struggle to keep up with the older boys on my smaller and vastly inferior push bike. My little legs are going at full speed, heart racing, lungs labouring, and i can see my breath as i puff like a steam train. it’s 1982, i am seven.

There is a sense of urgency as this rag tag group of neighbourhood kids hurry towards the potential location of our latest hide-out. As we ride my mind is also racing: how can we make this hide-out our best one yet? Where will be the entrances and the escape routes be? What will we need to do to make sure our hide-out is well camouflaged from others?

Where are the best vantage points for the look-out?

We all have our roles and mine is the look-out, a role won by my confidence in climbing trees. i am the lightest, naturally nimble, and can balance precariously on lightweight tree branches. Being the look-out makes me a powerful secret weapon for our neighbourhood group, and makes me feel useful and proud. i may be the youngest but these skills have earned me a place in the group and respect.

This is the childhood in need of recognition and protection in a world dominated by technology and risk assessment. This is the childhood i want for my kids. A childhood rich with experiences that gives children the capacity to develop lifelong skills beyond the backyard. A raw and real childhood that provides a framework for our kids to discover themselves.

Fast forward .... (it's) 2014 and i am now the Program Manager for Nature Play QLd. We are a not-for-profit organisation that advocates the power of unstructured play outdoors. We exist to help parents find ways to get kids off screens and back outside. during recent events, organised by the Nature Play QLd team, i had the opportunity to talk with hundreds of parents who brought their children along to experience some of the missions that we set kids to complete in the Nature Play program. While their kids played in the mud, tumbled down hills, made and flew kites, climbed trees, and found stories in the clouds, we asked their parents to tell us their best aspects or memories from childhood.

Here are their answers. it may not surprise you that most of these childhood memories happened outside, but what may surprise you is in thinking what your favourite childhood memories are – and are those experiences still available for your children? ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Rocks!

HE MALENY C & K Community Kindergarten recently introduced a project sharing local skills and hands-on practice in rock carving and sculpturing techniques into the program.

This on-going journey of discovery began a few months ago at the Kindergarten as Fran Carr and her five year old son, Zac, became ‘Kindy’s resident sculptors.’ once staff and children risk assessments had been performed to ensure safety for all participants, students and staff worked together to find the sandstone rocks locally.

Fran then introduced the Kindergarten students to different basic rock carving and sculpturing techniques using a chisel and hammer.

The children spent time designing patterns and playing with lines, shape and space, developing them into an overall shape of a large rainbow serpent. over four weeks, Fran and Zac guided and supported the children to carve their individual designs into one of the nineteen sandstone rocks.

Co-director of the Maleny Community Kindergarten, Ms Elle Hughes said, “We have explored, discussed and observed natural materials and art in nature to stimulate and extend children’s interests, knowledge and understanding.”

“We have also been learning about connections between nature and indigenous culture, thanks to Lyndon davis retelling us the story of how the Rainbow serpent carved up this land.” some were unsure of how three, four and five year old children could participate, but Ms Hughes said they can achieve so much, “The children love their work and actively show visitors which ones they one worked on.” overall, the Kindergarten Rainbow Serpent is truly a community rock sculpture and we are grateful to Fran and Zac and all the parents, family and friends who have participated in this exciting journey of creation.

AMiE oLivER may be changing the world with his “Food Revolution,” but there is a quiet revolution happening on the Hinterland.

Yvonne and david Ellis from Baranbali Farm, Conondale, are paving the way for small scale farmers and the way we buy our food.

What started out as a need to provide organic food for their children has evolved into a growing business. “The best thing i can do for my children besides provide love and sense of family, is clean, clean food.”

More importantly, the Ellis’ are trailblazers when it comes to best farm practices; soil regeneration; keeping animals healthy and happy; providing clean food and promoting healthy living. “i realised really quickly that you don’t treat the symptoms you treat the cause and you have to keep the 14

animal in the best health, so we work hard on keeping our animals really, really healthy.” “i think there is a big change coming. i’ve seen it in the United Kingdom where people are going back to small farming. it’s so multi-faceted. We’re not just organic because we want to be organic. it’s about bringing the soil back into health; it’s about a sense of community and keeping your food miles down. it’s about knowing who’s buying from you, and knowing and supporting the farmer.”

Growing up on a dairy farm in the Midlands ireland, Yvonne studied nursing and went to Cairns for a holiday where she met david, originally from Palmwoods and also from a farming family. it was love at first sight! “david and i have an agreement. i do the animal husbandry while he is the land manager or the muscle on the farm.”

The Ellis’ insist they are just doing their thing and learning along the way. They believe there is a market for people who want healthy, organic food. The popularity of farmers markets are an indication that people want to buy local and know where their food is coming from. “People are sick of just going into a big factory type supermarket, buying something that’s old and been in storage for a year.”

Brisbane/Noosa markets. iGA in Maleny is quite good but still a lot leaves the area...so it’s important to support local farmers.”

“The business started with a very old house cow called daffodil, because the girls were lactose intolerant. Then came the pigs and people were asking about the pork. We already had the cattle up here so we had beef, then we got a bit bigger and added some sheep. We also have a couple of young Jersey house cows, horses and children's ponies, ducks, a poultry flock, a big veggie garden and our wonderful chocolate Labrador, Charlie.”

Yvonne won Champion Bird at the Maleny show last year for her rare breed poultry, Gold Laced Wyandotte. They also have three italian Maremma livestock guardian dogs for their sheep. in 2013, Baranbali Farm was certified organic and Yvonne says that the Australian organic Association has been marvellous in helping them achieve certification.

“We’re in the process of land regeneration at the moment, so we don’t have very many cattle because we need to give this land time to heal, time to grow. We’ve worked really hard with the first thirty acres, breaking up the compaction, liming it, bringing the pH up and we’ve composted and manured for the last couple of years, so the

fertility and the health that’s coming through the thirty acres is extraordinary. Every day you see a change in it and the animals benefit as a result.”

The business has grown from strength to stength.

Yvonne shares another one of her passions, photography on her Facebook page, with beautiful shots of the farm and the family.

Yvonne also teaches horse riding at the sunshine Coast Riding for the disabled (RdA) in North Arm once a week. “i love it. They are physically and mentally disabled kids and adults. don’t get me started on the lack of funding ... everybody volunteers. one day i hope to make time to become an assessor and then be able to educate up and coming RdA instructors.

Yvonne is a vibrant and passionate woman who obviously loves what she does and is keen to educate children and people about food. “i want people to see where their food is coming from. We’re not trying to hide anything. We are very open to show everybody everything which goes on here.”

it was a labour of love for LCC organiser Lynda simpson, "4500 litres of bean bag filler and three days of backbreaking stuffing, in a self constructed incubator in my front yard, in 27 degree heat,” she explains.

“Armed with dust masks, a self-made stuffing tube, a marquee lowered to the ground so the walls folded under the legs, and a dyson vacuum cleaner we now absolutely love, i succeeded in keeping my property polystyrene free and achieving the stuffing of 20 lounge mats and 3 bean bags for the Cinema.” she smiles, “What we do for the comfort of others."

Now teenagers don't need to bring a pillow to enjoy the relaxed style. There are 45 chairs at the back as well, for the adults that turn up or the more traditional cinema-goers.

"The kids love it, and we have had up to 60 attend the younger children's films, which is a great achievement."

A not-for-profit adventure, Lynda said all the promotion is run from home. on November 28th, Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium is screening at 5.30pm followed by the Maze Runner at 7.30pm. doors at Maleny Community Centre open at 5pm, adults are $12, students $8 and under 4’s $5. Learning The Great Lesson in Life: “Joie de Vie”

W

E ARE HoME iN MALENY. The great experience of living for almost a year in an ordinary backwater of rural France has been fascinating and very rewarding for us.

The one big thing which made it so good was the accidental meeting with our now good friend Barbara, convenor of a local English/French language group who invited us to join the group. Both English and French “learners” attend and just enjoy the camaraderie and the fractured language. We now have quite a circle of good friends in the Charente and expect to entertain the odd traveller to Maleny….that’s when they overcome their reluctance to undertake such “a long voyage.” in truth, the year could have been quite sterile if not for this happy group. it is simply a French characteristic that close personal relationships with new-comers are very slow to develop. Take our little hamlet. While our few neighbours are very polite, with a nod, a wave, even a short conversational exchange in passing, there is no personal invitation to come closer.

Patience is another stand-out French characteristic, at least outside Paris. And finally, at 69, i have acquired some

patience .…”and about bloody time,” i hear val saying in the background. i learnt this life skill in supermarche checkout queues. The supermarket might actually have a dozen checkout lanes installed but it is rare to see more than three open. one simply must wait in line patiently. Each customer and the check out operator exchange the obligatory “bonjours” and then the items are processed through and build up on the packing counter. Then the customer will slowly put the items away in bags in the trolley. Then the monetary transaction occurs, very often requiring a search through the handbag for a chequebook. Then the cheque is passed back and forth several times and sometimes identity documents are reviewed and notes taken. And then, at last, we have the “au revoirs” and “bonne journees” (for you French learners, that’s “have a nice day”). And i have not made all that up. Next customer, please!

Here’s a free lesson on correct shopping etiquette: on entering any shop, no matter how humble, one MUsT exchange “bonjour” with the shop keeper and “au revoir” when departing, even if one is just popping in for a quick look. A small café or bar with customers rates an audible

“messieurs” or if ladies are also in attendance “messieurs/dames” and “au revoir” on departure. Apart from that supercilious waiter in La Rochelle we have never meet a rude French person. it is sometimes said that the French are rogues on the road.

However, we have not seen one instance of road rage in France, but then again we have not driven in Paris. Certainly the French motorist can’t stand being behind another vehicle and will pass at the first, hopefully safe, opportunity. Bu they also give way where required, don’t use their horns, and often show great patience and consideration. After all, what else can one do in the narrow streets of a village or when faced by a farmer on a huge tractor hauling an even huger farm machine? Note to those afoot in France: don’t trust a French driver to stop at a pedestrian crossing just for you… no, no, no!

Was language a problem? in truth, no, but we had made ourselves relatively capable of conducting everyday transactions. The pressure to achieve this level of survival French was of course considerable; you will appreciate the absolute need to be able to book a table for two at a romantic restaurant or two nights in a lovely B&B or just to buy the lovely French bread and cheese and wine. But protracted conversation in French is just not on for us…

protracted in our case means anything over two sentences! it is also often a problem to speak French, as the other party will break into English so that they can practice their language skills.

However, we have both become fluent in the use of the thumb as the indicator for “we want just one”, not the index finger.

Now for the Great Lesson on Life. The number one “lesson in living” we have learned is “don’t do stress.” Relax. Be patient.

Let the other motorist come through the narrow street first.

After six months i had need to renew my blood pressure pills. We had already established a relationship with a local doctor who speaks great accented English and has a ready sense of humour. He checked me over thoroughly and remarked on my excellent blood pressure. i replied that our lifestyle for the past six months had been bucolic with no committees, no commitments, no pressure. We have no stress anymore, i stressed. To which he replied with a straight gallic face: “Ah, monsieur, we do not do stress in France!”

“Joie de vie”. That’s the great lesson we bring home and which we intend to apply. don’t do stress.

NBN Towers: are you for or against?

BN Co is CoNdUCTiNG further scoping studies in the Hinterland and their delivery partner, Aurecon, will be seeking in-principle interest from landowners for fixed wireless sites in the Glasshouse Mountain and Maleny areas from 29 september to 1 october 2014.

The Hinterland Times has received correspondence, both for (residents saying lighting fast internet is crucial for business to thrive) and against the towers. Jim straker from Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands presents arguments representing residents concerned about the project. These are addressed by an NBN spokesperson.

Health and Safety Jim Straker: NBN Co is a government company undertaking a government project under government set standards. Their responses to any concerns are based on this fact. does this mean that what they are doing and saying covers the full picture? Where is the ‘risk analysis’ for such a major project?

Following the NBN forum in Maleny on 16 october, residents should have increased concerns about the proposed imposition of NBN microwave towers on our communities.

Everyone knows that microwaves are dangerous and that is why NBN does not want to use the term – microwaves heat and cook from the inside out. This is thermal effect.

Little consideration appears to have been given to the impact of microwaves and the towers on humans, wildlife and insects in our environment.

NBN: Microwaves are simply radiowaves with short wave lengths - they are part of the radio frequency spectrum, and are covered by the ARPANSA standard for radio communications. The NBN's fixed wireless facilities contribute very little radio frequency to the environment: • The antennas themselves are extremely low powered – about one tenth the power of a taxi’s two-way radio.

• They emit the same kind of signal as AM/FM radio and television broadcasts that Australians have been living with for decades.

Jim Straker: Electro Hypersensitivity (EHs) is now recognized by the World Health organization (WHo). it is a phenomenon where individuals experience adverse health effects while using or being in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic, or electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

Lloyds of London and A.M. Best consider health damages caused by EMR a critical, emerging risk. These underwriters advise insurance companies not to insure against damages to health caused by cell phones, antennas or “smart” meters. Health safety has not been proven by NBN Co. NBN: NBN Co adheres to the safety standards set by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA).

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has said: “The highest values of the radiofrequency electromagnetic energy that the public would be exposed to from the NBN base stations that are currently planned are less than 1/100 of the Australian public exposure limit.”

As NBN Co is not a public health authority, residents concerned about the national radiofrequency electromagnetic energy safety standards should contact ARPANSA on 1800 022 333.

NBN’s Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Energy Expert and Research Data Jim straker: The failure of NBN to bring a professionally qualified and experienced medical expert to answer community health questions to the NBN’s ‘Health Forum’, indicates the contempt that they show towards communities.

Mr Bangay is an accredited tester, level of exposure consultant, and has been involved in the preparation of the 22

standard. This does not give him the status of ‘expert on health effects’. He is not independent - he is an outside consultant.

NBN: Michael Bangay was the independent expert on the health effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic energy (RF EME) that attended NBN Co’s information session in Maleny.

Michael has decades of experience in RF EME, much of which was gained at ARPANSA. More information on Michael can be found at www.michaelbangayconsulting.com The sources of information used by NBN Co and Michael Bangay are those provided by the WHO, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and published, peer reviewed, scientific papers.

NBN’s Multi Technology Mix Jim Straker: People are embracing better communications to enhance business and their current way of life with scant regard to the probable long-term effects.

Many mobile phone towers have been erected with minimal notice to the population and no concern for wildlife.

The ‘precautionary principle solution’ sought by the surrounding areas to Maleny should be the same service as that to be offered for Maleny (a satellite service could be accepted in totally remote sectors). Please provide broadband for everybody through landlines.

NBN: The goal of the National Broadband Network (NBN) is to bring better broadband to Australians, including residents of the rural and regional surrounds of Maleny.

By embracing a broader mix of technologies, we aim to provide the NBN to people faster and at less cost to taxpayers.

Our instructions from the Government are to provide download rates of 25 megabits per second to all premises as soon as possible.

NBN Co offers wholesale speeds. Individual experience including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN depends on some factors outside our control like your equipment quality, software, the broadband package you select and how your service provider designs its network.

Class 2B Possible Carcinogen Jim Straker: WHo has declared the use of microwave technology to be a ‘possible carcinogen with 2B status’.

Therefore NBN cannot illustrate that use of microwaves is safe. This is a sad specific selection of substances. Class 2B also includes Chlordane, Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, ddT, Cobalt and compounds, Furan, Lead, Naphthalene, Fuel oils – to name a few of the over 200 listed chemicals.

NBN: It is important to understand what this listing really means. Unlike Class 1 substances such as tobacco and alcohol, benzene (found in petrol), and x-rays, which are proven to be carcinogenic, all substances listed as 2B are not proven to be carcinogenic, nor are they considered “probably” carcinogenic. It is worth noting that the 2B list is extensive, and includes coffee, Bracken Ferns, and contraceptives.

BioInitiative Report Jim Straker: A verbal attack on one of the editors was the only commentary provided by the NBN consultant about the internationally renowned Bioinitiative 2012 Working Group’s significant contributions to the reference material for communities.

This team of 29 highly qualified professionals would not give so much time and effort to produce these reports if they did not have serious concerns about the health impacts, through the use of microwaves, by the telecommunications industry.

NBN: Some members of the Maleny community have expressed the concern that the current safety limits for exposure to radiofrequency energy were inadequate. It would appear that the basis for their concern was derived from the BioInitiative Report, a publication available on the internet.

This report is neither an accurate or independent review of the current science and is simply a review of selective papers and opinions that supports the author's belief that the safety limits are wrong, and that low level radio signals are harmful to human health.

Re-building the Kenilworth Provisional School , 1917

HE 2015 sUNsHiNE CoAsT Council’s Heritage calendar focuses on the years 1914 to 1918, in commemoration of the centenary of World War i.

Councillor Jenny McKay said the 2015 Heritage Calendar is a wonderful collaboration between Council’s Cultural Heritage services Unit and sunshine Coast community museums and other organisations. “in acknowledgement of the centenary, sunshine Coast Council, in collaboration with local heritage organisations and private collectors, presents a calendar of sunshine Coast images capturing daily life on the home front. it was during these years the Australian spirit of volunteering flourished.

“To support the war effort many local patriotic fundraising events were held, women everywhere were knitting ‘for our boys’ and joining the Red Cross, while children

continued to attend school.

“Council thanks the heritage organisations and private individuals for their contribution to this commemorative calendar.

“At just $7.50 the calendar will be a great Christmas stocking filler idea for those who have everything, or an interest in the region’s cultural heritage. People will need to be quick though as last year they sold out very fast.”

Kenilworth's contribution to the calendar was an image of the re-building of the Kenilworth Provisional school in 1917.

At the calendar launch, Lenore Meldrum from the Kenilworth Museum told an interesting tale about its rebuild and local volunteers.

The photograph from the Kenilworth Historical Association in the Heritage Calendar of the rebuilding of the Kenilworth Provisional School has, like many others, a story to tell.

William Sharry (Service Number - 2199) enlisted on February 29, 1916 in Brisbane. He was wounded in action at Rouen on 12 October, 1917; returned to Australia 20 December 1917 and discharged from service (M.O.) 19 March 1918.

His father Christopher (Christy) Sharry was a Maroochy Shire Councillor from 1911-1919. He was also a member of the building committee of the Kenilworth Provisional School which opened in 1900 along with Richard L. Sims (Chairman); T. Pearce (Treasurer); Harry Pickering (Secretary); and Jacob Fritz.

It's a story which begins at the start of the 20th century, when the community of Yahoo Creek met 80% of the cost of construction of “their” Kenilworth school, in 1899 with the first pupils attending at the beginning of the school year of 1900.

In October of the following year the Kenilworth Farmers Association was formed at a meeting on the second day of that month, at the home of John McGinn. After that first assembly, meetings of the newly formed Association were held in Kenilworth Provisional School.

Future meetings were appointed to be held on the first Saturday after the full moon, which was for “workplace health and safety “reasons – in today’s language. Committee members riding their horses to the meeting would be able to see the potholes in the roads under the light of the full moon.

Meetings of the Association continued to be held in the school building, until 1905 when a letter was received from the school committee and tabled at the April 15 meeting. It was signed by Mr Duncan Beattie as secretary and requested the sum of three shillings per night for use of the school room as a cleaning fee.

It was decided by the committee to write to the Education Department as to whether the school committee had the right to impose such a charge. The 15 July meeting of the Association

recorded that a letter had been received from the Education Department, contents unknown, except that an adjourned debate was held and after lengthy discussion it was moved by Mr W Sutton, seconded Mr F Goeths, that this be the last meeting held by the Association in the school room.

The meetings continued in private homes until the opening of the Kenilworth Farmers’ Assembly Hall on Boxing Day, 1907, from which time the Association had their own home.

On 18 March 1917, the school burnt down and the Kenilworth Farmers Assembly Hall was rented for 15 shillings per week until a new building was erected and ready for use in early 1918. The police attributed the fire to mice.

The loss of the school building would have been another burden for this young community to bear with so many of their young men going off to fight for King and country.

But one wonders whether the infrastructure of the Gheerulla community may have been vastly different today if the school committee had not seen fit to charge the Kenilworth Farmers’ Association that cleaning fee in 1905? sunshine Coast Council thanks the following community organisations who have contributed images for the 2015 calendar: Glass House Mountains Community Hall Committee, Landsborough Museum, Peachester History Committee, Nambour Museum, The Bankfoot House Collection, The Friends of Pattemore House , Kenilworth Museum, Buderim Historical society and discover Eumundi Heritage and visitor Centre.

The Kenilworth and district Historical Museum is open every sunday from 10am to 2pm, between February and November.

HE BLACKALL RANGE Woodcrafters’ Guild have pleasure in presenting a comprehensive display of the very broad range of items their members choose to spend their time creating.

Their annual Christmas Expo in st. Mary’s Hall on the Green in Montville provides an excellent venue to do exactly that. The important dates are saturday december 6, 9am to 8pm and sunday december 7, 9am to 3pm. saturday’s timing will coincide with the official switching on of the village Christmas Lights at 6pm, making it another important reason to be present.

The Expo will enable you to view twelve months of innovative handcrafted ornaments, a variety of clocks, bowls, furniture and exquisite carvings - some of them prize-winning creations.

Then of course, there will be numerous

toys including educational pieces, superb rocking horses and many pull-along toys.

Everything is locally made by members who enjoy filling their time in making this broad collection of wooden items – NoTHiNG is iMPoRTEd! some will be for sale, but not all, as they need to keep a good range to provide for their charity donations.

Most toys are donated to the salvation Army, and other community organisations, to distribute to needy families.

Last year the salvation Army received over 750 toys from the Woodies ‘toyboys’. To add to the enjoyment, there will be tea and coffee available, as well as a sausage sizzle both days.

This did not mean that he believed them to be unchangeable, set in stone; indeed much of his working life was spent in trying to modify and reform them when he felt it necessary.

But he always did so within the accepted boundaries: Whitlam, while he could be a radical when it came to policy, was always a gradualist, a Fabian, when it came to process. He believed in referendum, not revolution. He assiduously followed the rules, both in the letter and the spirit.

But his opponents were not so scrupulous, and that was what ultimately destroyed him and his government. From the moment the Labor administration was elected, the Conservatives determined to do whatever it would take to bring it down. After 23 years, they regarded their rejection as an affront, an aberration; the natural law – their law – must be restored.

And any excuse would do; if Whitlam employed tactics and strategy to achieve his aims, the coalition leaders cried foul and went feral. Thus in 1974, Whitlam and his colleagues devised a scheme to take control of the senate by persuading a sitting dLP senator, vince Gair, to resign and take up a diplomatic post.

This was certainly unusual, even sneaky, but it was entirely legitimate. However, the then Liberal leader, Billy snedden, took the unprecedented step of forcing an election

by using his senate numbers to block the budget. of course, budget measures were and are regularly postponed and rejected, as the current administration knows all too well. But this was not a routine measure: the coalition withheld what is known as the supply bills, the money appropriated for the day-to-day working of government, especially in paying the public service.

This was seen as an outrageous breach of convention, never before seriously contemplated, let alone implemented. in 1967 the Labor senate leader Lionel Murphy had mooted the idea to Whitlam, who summarily dismissed it as unthinkable. But the coalition took the plunge not once but twice: in 1975 Malcolm Fraser devised an encore.

He was only able to do so by another egregious breach. When the Queensland Labor senator Bert Millner died in office, testate premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen replaced him not with another Labor nominee, but by an opponent, the risible Patrick Albert Field. once again, this had not happened since Federation; replacements within the same party had always been automatic, and indeed have now become so by law.

But Field, with instructions to oppose Labor without question or hesitation, gave Fraser the numbers he needed. His trigger was the sacking of a senior minister, Rex Connor, over what was known as the Loans Affair. This had entailed an attempt to build massive infrastructure by securing petro dollar funds from the Arabs through unconventional sources. once again, this was unusual, and in the end reckless, even foolhardy; but in spite of what was later alleged, it was in no sense illegitimate. The relevant decisions, albeit in

secret, were signed through the Executive Council of Cabinet. But the whole thing went wrong, and eventually Whitlam removed the commission of Connor, as Minister for Minerals and Energy, to end negotiations.

However, Connor persisted, still searching for the fairy tale millions. The Australian’s foreign editor, Greg sheridan, in a series of graceless articles immediately after Whitlam’s death, suggested that Whitlam had in fact given Connor a wink: if the money could still be secured, all would be forgiven. At the time sheridan was fomenting dLd conspiracies in student politics. i was on the spot in Canberra and from my first-hand knowledge can testify that this was not true: when Whitlam found out he was incandescent.

But in any case, sheridan’s fantasy misses the point: Connor was dismissed, not for pursuing the loan, but for misleading Parliament – the same crime that had undone the hapless Jim Cairns. For Whitlam, this was the unforgiveable sin: he knew sacking Connor would bring dire political consequences, but he felt he had no choice: Parliament was supreme. To a normal observer Whitlam deserved praise for his adherence to principle, but for Fraser it was what he called an extraordinary and reprehensible circumstance, and pulled the trigger: which brings us to the governorgeneral, sir John Kerr.

Whitlam was confident that Kerr would remain on side not because he was weak (which he was, as Fraser has since confirmed) but because he was bound to follow the advice of his ministers. This, after all, was the convention observed by the British monarch - Kerr’s superior - for centuries. But Kerr had

already broken ranks: he had taken counsel and encouragement from the Chief Justice and former Liberal Attorney-General, Garfield Barwick, who was also the cousin of Fraser’s own shadow attorney, Robert Ellicott. so Fraser was prepared: Fraser was lurking when Whitlam saw Kerr to tender his advice to call a half-senate election, and when Kerr refused and Whitlam indignantly knocked back Kerr's demand for an election for the House of Representatives, Kerr dismissed him. Whitlam's immediate (and conventional) response was that he would go to the Queen: Kerr replied that he had already terminated his commission and produced the document. Rather than throw it in his face, as his feisty wife Margaret later suggested, he meekly concurred: to the last he followed the rules.

Kerr did not: when later the speaker of the House, Gordon scholes, went to inform him that the Parliament had voted confidence in Whitlam, Kerr refused to see him, an act of authoritarianism not seen since the days of King Charles i. This was indeed, as Whitlam called it, a coup, a putsch. But maintaining his loyalty to the system that had failed him, he stood stony faced as the viceroy’s aidede-camp shut down Parliament and set him up for an election he knew he was doomed to lose: if Kerr, the Governor-General he had appointed, had dismissed him, the voters would believe he had done something unforgivable. They didn’t know what it was, but that didn’t matter. it was all over. so Whitlam stayed by the rules and was smashed – leaving his office to his enemies, but with his consistency, conviction and integrity untarnished. They don’t make them like that any more.

A spurt of community action has seen Maleny's future rainforest and walking track on the Community Precinct expanding at the rate of 1250 trees a week .

The speed-up is the result of Green Hills and Lake Baroon Catchment Care groups engaging more than 60 Nambour TAFE horticulture and land care students last month. The groups hosted a four-day, hands-on environmental experience for the students. students welcomed the chance to be exposed to all aspects of rainforest revegetation and environmental practices, within a 1.5km riparian margin on the obi obi Creek. They were also involved in onsite planting and management skills.

Green Hills Precinct Project Manager, Ron sharp, said the two-week training period resulted in an extra 2500 trees being planted beside the obi obi, opposite Erowal aged care facility. This brought the total of trees planted within the riparian margin so far to about 9500.

Mr sharp said that the recent input by community volunteers, when 86 people planted 2700 trees in one day, and the unexpected student involvement would be instrumental in delivering the project to the community.

There would be plenty of opportunity soon for volunteers to help with weeding, as the trees became established. Groups of Green Hills volunteers attend monthly maintenance mornings, weeding and recycling the pink tree guards that have become part of Maleny's vista.

Even though the tree guards had been exposed to the elements for three years, most could be used again, saving valuable resources.

Mr sharp said the proposed Community Precinct walking track from the Riverside Centre to Gardner's Falls would meander through the recent plantings, on the riparian margin, "in the not-too-distant future."

A extra boost to the project is an offer by the Green Army to work on the site for 19 weeks from mid-october. The Green Army, an Australian Government initiative, provides an opportunity for young Australians, aged 17-24 years, to gain training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields.

The Green Army team will help with fencing, weeding and maintenance of existing plantings and construction of the walking track.

Mr sharp said the track would traverse shady rainforest areas in some places and have signs identifying various trees. At least one platypus viewing platform was envisaged. initially, the track was to follow the perimeter of the riparian margin, but after recent negotiations by Green Hills it will now continue in and out of the rainforest area, thus giving shade and a great visual experience for users.

He thanked the sunshine Coast Council and Lake Baroon Catchment Care, "LBCC has been a solid supporter of the project and many thanks goes to the group for their ongoing assistance and involvement."

Golfers Work Hard for 'Promised Land' After years in the wilderness, the Maleny Golf Club is well on the way to realising their promised land. in eight brief months, the club has completed seven greens – and with favourable weather, the 9-hole course should be operational early in 2015.

This is as much a story about meticulous planning and the strength and determination of an army of volunteers, as it is about creating a top class golf course.

"The rapid progress is primarily due to the fantastic input from our volunteers, ranging from engineers, construction firms, surveyors, tradies, lawyers, farmers, ecologists; in fact, folk from all walks of life,” says President Max Whitten.

“For some it is a 'soft landing' as they retire from busy careers,” he continues.”skills, advice or just muscle, we find it right here in Maleny! With this level of community engagement and a capital works grant of $450,000 from Council, we are able to deliver a quality golf course without going into debt.”

Greens were turfed with tifdwarf stolons from Beerwah Golf Club and most of the tees have been constructed from kikuyu turf harvested on site.

The first of eight bunkers are completed and they are tipped to challenge players of all abilities. All greens are irrigated with either dam water, or recycled water supplied

by Unitywater.

Committed to capitalising on the splendid environmental setting, dozens of mature native 'paddock' trees that survived a century of farming have been carefully preserved. so far, around 500 native species, locally sourced from Brush Turkey and Barung, have been planted around the edges of the course to complement the extensive perimeter plantings.

These will not only enhance the environmental value of the Maleny Community Precinct, but are carefully selected and placed to ensure safety of walkers on the riverine trail, which is now under construction. The old derelict dam is being restored for water storage and wetland, and will be a magnet for bird life.

Max says, "it will be an alternative golfing experience to the courses down on the coastal plain. Are You Bushfire Prepared?

N

OW WE’RE IN THE midst of the bushfire season, do you know the location of your nearest Neighbourhood Safer Place? Do you know the function of a Neighbourhood Safer Place or NSP? When a bushfire threatens, whether your decision is to leave early or stay and defend your property, you should use an NsP only in the event that your Bushfire survival Plan fails. in other words, an NsP is a place of last resort.

An NsP is a local open space or building where people may gather, as a last resort, to seek shelter from a bushfire.

Use of an NsP may be your contingency plan when: ● Your Bushfire survival Plan has failed ● Your plan was to stay, but the extent of the fire means that your home cannot withstand the impact of the fire and therefore your home is not a safe place to shelter ● The fire has escalated to an ‘extreme’ or ‘catastrophic’ level and voluntary evacuation is your safest option The main purpose of an NsP is to provide some level of protection to human life from the effects of a bushfire.

Your NsP will not guarantee safety in all circumstances.

The following limitations of an NsP need to be considered if you plan to use one as a last resort: ● Firefighters may not be present, in the event that they will be fighting the main fire front elsewhere ● NsPs do not cater for animals or pets ● NsPs do not provide meals or amenities ● NsPs may not provide shelter from the elements, particularly flying embers

if you are a person with special needs you should give consideration to what assistance you may require at an NsP. Although QFEs cannot guarantee an immediate presence during a bushfire, every effort will be made to provide support as soon as resources are available.

You should identify the travel time and distance to your identified NsP. You should include this information in your Bushfire survival Plan.

You should update your plan every year prior to the bushfire season and confirm that your identified NsP has not changed location. You should not drive through fire affected areas to get to your NsP. once you have arrived at your NsP (building) some actions to consider include: ● Continually listen / seek / monitor further information in relation to the fire by whatever means of

communication you may have (radio, mobile phone, internet etc) ● As fire approaches – seek protection from radiant heat and embers as best you can. Attempt to cover any exposed skin with blankets/clothing. You should lie flat on the ground during the passage of the fire front ● Remain vigilant for possible new fire fronts from other directions Remember to complete your Bushfire survival Plan to ensure that you and your family are prepared and know what to do in the event of a bushfire.

The site has plenty of links, including to the Rural Fire service live bushfires map, current fire bans and restrictions, and emergency contact information for severe weather disasters. it also displays live local weather.

The Maleny Arts and Crafts Group will hold their annual Christmas Fair at the MACG Workshop located at the Maleny showgrounds from Friday, december 5 until sunday, december 7 from 9am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 4 pm each day. Entry is free and all items are handmade by local artisans.

There is the opportunity to purchase unique, locally produced gifts from the many quality homeware and gift items that will be on sale. Fine art, pottery and sculpture, woodcraft, jewellery, quilting, preserves, porcelain art and fabric craft are some of the treasures that will be available.

The raffle prize consists of a timber coffee table made by the woodworkers, accompanied by a glass bowl handcrafted by the pottery group.

Organic Matters...

Occupier’s Liability An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured.

The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase.

You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be sufficient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger – not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger.

What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned.

Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.

T MAY BE A SURPRISE to your good selves, but it is little know chapter of English history that before the immortal bard Shakespeare took up the pen to write his now famous plays, he was actually a Bush Regenerator working on restoring the once extensive woodlands of middle England. When not out practicing sound ecological weed management to enable the recruitment of the native woodland, he was busy planting trees in the Commons that had been deserted by the Black Plague.

Not surprisingly he was a firm advocate of applying deep mulch to improve soil and increase tree growth and long before his play writing days he was known for his insight and passion for the use of organic matter in ecological restoration and famous for such phrases as “to mulch or not to mulch that is the question” or “some mulch, some mulch my kingdom for some mulch”... It’s also little known fact that Shakespeare actually drew his name from his profession (as many did in the Middle Ages), it relates to his innovative technique of removing the highly invasive Eurasian Pear through a technique of shaking the saplings loose, hence Shakes – pear!

Now before you ask, the above is fiction (you’d be surprised) although it could contain some grains of truth... What cannot be argued however is the importance of the use of organic

Observation of a single large Ficus virens, also called a white fig, reveals its value as a food source for many frugivores, the fruit eaters, and smaller birds looking for insects and spiders plus fruit.

Visiting birds can include five species of pigeon, currawongs and magpies, flycatchers, honeyeaters, an occasional raptor, shrike-thrushes, cuckoos, pardalotes, robins, lorikeets, Regent bowerbirds, and the list goes on. Figs are really valuable.

Large old figs as isolated paddock trees are a feature of the Maleny landscape but it is worth remembering that if they are too far from the surrounding forest, larger pigeons are unlikely to visit them. Too

Not all figs are large. Ficus coronata and Ficus fraseri with sandpapery leaves are useful smaller figs and attract many birds which probe patches of loose bark for the insects which are an important protein source.

An occasional python might lie in wait along a branch for an unwary fruit bat, or the presence of a Lace Monitor goanna may be announced by Lewin honeyeaters calling loudly. Staghorn ferns and orchids may attach themselves to branches, adding yet another dimension to the beauty of the tree.

Above all, it is its value as a source of food and shelter that makes the fig such an important component of any revegetation project. Plant figs and so long as there is a good connection to another patch of forest or vegetated corridor, the birds will come.

If you had the time, energy and available finances you could do far worse than surrounding each tree you plant with a whole bale of mulch! But if we settle for a quarter to a fifth of a bale per plant you’ll be doing well. As a general rule mulch depth should be ideally between 100-200mm and don’t pile mulch against the trunk of the tree.

What we often fail to take into account when planting native vegetation is the soil. We must recognise that trees, are just a part of a very complex forest ecosystem that relies on nutrient cycling between vegetation, fungi, fauna and soils and that increasing organic matter in the early stages will accelerate the organic feedback loop of mulch, tree, growth, leaf fall, mulch....

- that will turn the tubestock you plant today into the towering tree of tomorrow - figuratively speaking, maybe give it a decade or century or so!

HE MALENY COMMUNITY really took the 5000 Poppies Project to heart.

it all began at the Maleny Library, with wool donated by the Friends of the Library and library staff handing out poppy-making kits to customers, tourists and anyone who was interested, for the past few months.

Along with the kits, many people shared their lovely stories about past relatives who had fought in the First World War. Residents of Erowal and patients at Maleny Hospital also contributed poppies.

The locally produced play "Billy Goes to War" and the Maleny Library initiative inspired Helen Gilmour-Walsh and Anne Harber to gather the community to make poppies at the RsL. Local artist Corrie Wright has created a display, and the photos show all the willing hands helping her. The RsL contributed the wool and the iGA Community Benefit Fund has been used to pay for the equipment to display the poppies. A real community effort.

Tina Cooper: From Eumundi Markets to international acclaim

T

iNA CooPER came into the world on the small island of Jersey off France. There, sunbleached castles line the horizon and romance fills the air. in 1966 she moved to Australia, a larger island, with plenty of opportunities to explore her natural surroundings and art mediums to express them in. in 1989 Tina chanced to meet Mark Galton, a glass blower, at the sunshine Coast Hinterland. “My first experience watching Mark working this liquid hot glass induced an overwhelming response in me: ‘Hello! i’ve found my destiny’. A huge feeling of excitement crept over my body, even the hairs on my arms stood up!”

And that is how Tina’s journey in glass began and the 30 year old single mum took a leap of faith into the unknown. “i convinced Mark to start our own studio. We rummaged through salvage dumps to find our treasures. We did the best with what we had.”

The pair began creating pieces to sell at Eumundi and Riverside Markets. “one of the lines i used was, ‘one day i’ll be famous, and the work you buy today will be a reminder to you that you helped to achieve my goal’.” she told the Hinterland Times they learned to create designs around freeform dance as they worked. “i have learned to bring humour and little expectation to my work space,” Tina said. “Everyone needs to feel a part. We always strive to create the vision of peace and we have to become one in the experience of this. dance has brought people to tears and left them with the sense of that energy created by true artists enjoying the journey of making some awesome pieces.” “i spent five days blowing and two at the markets on the weekend. Pack, wrap, grind, collect accounts, order material, run a house – five-minute noodles, 4.00am wake up call. i drove in a bomb of a van with a child in tow, no fuel in the tank to get us home and no money to buy breakfast – as my daughter, Jasmin, reminds me.”

After six months Tina and Mark launched Martini Glass and a few galleries took them on. Just six years later Martini Glass was a studio with representations around Australia. Tina realised the time was right to pursue her passion in glass.

But she was, in her own words, ‘very wobbly and unsure’. she still gets asked for her bent goblets even though they were intended to be straight! But her technique improved through workshops and the studio’s first win backed up Tina’s gut feeling that she was on track. over time, people ask Tina about her formal credentials. “i remember a William Morris workshop where ten glass artists rattled off their credentials. i felt very humbled. ‘i have a BNT.’ Billy, my mentor, said ‘oh, great,’ but they all asked what a BNT was. i said with a smile, ‘Born naturally talented!’ They all laughed, but it’s true. We don’t need letters after our name, just the courage to be creators.”

Aside from William Morris she also attended workshops with Richard Clements, Ruth King, dante Marioni and dick Marquis, Pino signoretti and Lino Tagliapietra.

shortly afterwards Tina was asked to represent Australia in the UsA. Ragland Gallery in NsW recognised something in her work that represented the Barrier Reef. she explains, “My very popular sealife series was the outcome of immersing my senses while floating through many reefs. i captured the feeling, experience and bright coral, fish, shells and weeds and solidified them in glass as a timeless reflection of Mother Nature in its glory.”

With every plus in life comes a negative. Just two weeks after the UsA show the Twin Towers in New York were brought down. Tina found that her soaring career had been cut short. she was almost back to square one. “The world changed from that day on and was never the same,” she said. she did, however return to the Us for the following years, hoping for a turning point in her career. she also a signed a contract on a block of land overlooking Baroon Pocket dam where her dream was to open an “appointment only” gallery.

Tina persisted. she had exhibitions at the Palazzo versace – Gold Coast, in Barcelona, spain, Philadelphia at the National Liberty Museum and in Chicago at the international Expo of soFA. in addition, “My journey from a little island to the sunshine Coast has allowed me to rub shoulders with great artists that have enriched my life’s work.” “i have been honoured to be able to create some spectacular glass pieces for clients. An urn commissioned for the King of Tonga for his funeral and also for other members of the family. i have sold twelve glass pieces to Pat Cash and saw them six months later in their home in a twopage spread in New Idea magazine. Jasmin and i didn’t eat two minute noodles that night!”

Tina finally put up her studio at Baroon dam Pocket not so long ago. “i kept the vision and learned it may not happen now, but if you stay true to yourself it will.” she has had it tough and life has been a rollercoaster ride (“i hate rollercoaster rides!”).

After twenty five years of sticking at it, Tina believes the vision people see in her work is due to the heart and soul she invests in it. “i’m so lucky to have had this tough life. i go to work and have fun and fill my life with passion.”

osT visiToRs To Montville wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even realise Russell Family Park is there! Tucked behind the shops, adjacent to the car park, with public facilities and a small, but modern playground - it is a perfect stop for families.

The day i visited, it was full of dads with toddlers, patiently keeping their broods occupied, whilst partners enjoyed some retail therapy. This park has much to offer and an interesting history.

Purchased by council in 1998, this 7.3ha area of former farmland lies adjacent to the western side of Montville village, in the headwater of skene Creek, which eventually flows into the Mary River.

The waterhole was enlarged in the 1920s and has always been of particular significance for indigenous people, for timber getters who used it for watering bullocks, as a swimming hole for local children, for irrigation, for firefighting and flushing public toilets in the village. in June 2001, a master plan included a comprehensive network of paths, bridges and boardwalks and an ecoeducational Rainforest Walk.

A hard working community group discovered a 'forest' of Camphor Laurel, Private and Chinese Celtis with a flourishing understorey of Lantana, Wild Tobacco and Raspberry.

However the beautiful red soils told them that the potential for the site is similar to the rainforest at Mary Cairncross Reserve.

Representative Nadia Joyce said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Russell Family Park Community Nature Conservation Group has been working in the park since 2008 to create a natural rainforest walk in the northern section of the park.â&#x20AC;?

TS Centaur follows Captain Cook’s footsteps SOUTH PASSAGE – a two-masted gaff rigged schooner – recently set sail on a two-day adventure in Captain Cook and Matthew Flinder’s footsteps. On board were excited cadets and staff from TS Centaur (Maleny), TS Onslow and NTS Gympie.

UB LiEUTENANT (sBLT) Linda vann describes the experience of the trip to Moreton Bay with enthusiasm, “When we joined the ship on Friday evening we were divided into three watches – red, white and blue. Then cadets were introduced to the crew and allocated bunks.”

Each watch is guided by its own watch leader and the skipper, and takes it in turn to run the ship.

The watches are each given a significant amount of responsibility, as Linda explains: “Cadets take the helm, which means they steer the ship and we raise and lower the sails. other jobs include the look out, tack and gybe (or turn the ship), checking the deck, navigation and entries in the ship’s log.” it was a perfect saturday morning. After they had done their initial sail training, it was all hands on deck. The crew hoisted the sails and set sail for Moreton island.

“With a light south-west wind, clear blue sky and a calm sea; conditions were perfect for a weekend of sailing. While the duty watch ran the ship, the other watches relaxed and enjoyed the cruise, dolphin spotting and admiring the sailing crafts and ships we passed.”

“Mid-afternoon we dropped anchor near the Tangalooma wrecks off Moreton island. We lowered the dinghy and set off to the shore for some fun on the beach and then climbed the amazing sand dunes.”

A fiercely contested knot tying competition was held on board between watches. it was a fun way of becoming

proficient in the knots most commonly used on sailing craft.

“The watches carried on into the night, monitoring their position, checking the anchor and safety from other vessels, as well as recording weather conditions and updating the log.” “in the morning, we set sail for Manly. on the way we dropped anchor for lunch and a refreshing swim in the warm waters of the bay.”

The Hinterland Times asked Cadet Able seaman Kate Manlongat what her favourite part of the adventure was.

“The whole experience was fantastic. But being boatswain and able to go out to the bow and lie on the net with a secured harness, was amazing. Maybe the most challenging thing for me was raising the sails. Being in the cadets is a great way to learn teamwork and take part in all types of sailing activities.”

We also asked Kate whether she would recommend that other young people join. “i would encourage other teens to get involved. Not only do we all have fun but we also get a good idea of what we may want to pursue as a career.” so keen are these young people and their leaders that Ts

Centaur is already planning next year’s South Passage sailing adventure!

The Australian Navy Cadets is a voluntary youth organisation for males and females aged between 12 (turning 13 by december 31) and 19. There are a total of 82 units throughout Australia, each of which is sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. Thanks to RAN, uniforms are free and some sailing craft are supplied.

The Ts Centaur unit is named after the Australian hospital ship Centaur (AHs 47) which was sunk by a Japanese submarine off Moreton island in 1943, resulting in the loss of 268 lives. The unit parades at their headquarters at the Maleny show Grounds every Wednesday during school term from 5:25pm to 9pm.

other events that occur throughout the year vary. There may be a day sails on the south Passage in summer and others are organised for early next year. Ts Centaur normally sails small craft such as corsairs and they also have double kayaks.

Regular on water activities are organised between september and May. Cadets also participate in bushwalking, rifle shooting, drum bands and organised camps.

There are opportunities for each recruit to progress through the ranks from Recruit to seaman, Able seaman, Leading seaman, Petty officer and Chief Petty officer.

Cadets are required to show commitment and responsibility, pass exams and maintain a positive and enjoyable environment for all in the unit.

UR EXPERIENCE OF LIFE depends on our state of consciousness. This determines how we perceive the universe and how we can get most support Wendy Rosenfeldt from it.

Knowledge is different in different states of consciousness.

When we are in the sleep state of consciousness our perception of the surrounding environment is virtually non-existent.

In the dream state it is a different reality to that of the waking state. In transcendental consciousness everything in the changing material world goes away and all that is perceived is the level of one unified wholeness.

As we grow in higher states of consciousness, we experience a refinement in our perception to the point where everything in the universe can be experienced as being connected at its deepest level while on a more superficial level to have boundaries. This is called Unity Consciousness.

Before this most enlightened ability of perception, our awareness is limited by our level of awareness and how well we look after ourselves.

We are born into a situation with particular constraints and these are reinforced by our family, culture and the environment. We are conditioned by our surroundings and what we are told when we are growing up. We hardwire our brains by our experiences.

With each generation comes evolution. It is no longer acceptable to discriminate against people of different sex, race, age or sexual preference. While this definitely shows that there is an increase in the collective consciousness of unity of life, it is still a long way from Unity Consciousness.

How do we speed up the process of evolution?

Our machinery of perception is influenced by what we put in to ourselves and what we do. When the mind and body are dulled by junk food, fatigue and alcohol we experience more boundaries in our thoughts and perceptions.

When you are really tired you can barely follow a conversation. If you are under the influence of alcohol your ability to correctly judge the surroundings is hampered. Feelings of apathy and dullness often follow a night of binging on chocolate.

The more rested and clear we are the better we are able to take in information from the environment. The less stressed and anxious we are the greater we have access to our intuition and the more confidently we go out into the world. Transcending really opens up our options because we get out of the boundaries of our minds. Otherwise we are stuck in the interneuronal pathways in our brain that have been created by past experience.

As long as we are not transcending, our range of possibilities will be limited to what we can experience through our mind and senses. Transcendental Meditation is a process of going beyond the boundaries of the mind to experience a state of consciousness that is the same as the Unified Field. It is like soaking the mind in the field of all possibilities so that when you come out there is greater freedom in thought and therefore a greater field of possibilities.
