It is “motherapproved” T

HE MONTH STARTED with a storm bird deciding the tree outside our bedroom was perfect for his 5am mating call, and now he's back. It brings to mind the "Tim Hawkins Handbook of Alternative Cuss Words - field tested and mother approved". It gives options for "miffed", "exasperated" and "I'm not having it". Please don't get me wrong. I like birds. I like waking up early. I just don't enjoy that combination. Kiss my grits, is anyone else going spare with the mother-of-pearl screecher? Last month, I took much longer than I should have wandering around Sculpture on the Edge. What a fantastic display it was. Even an udder on the 'coo'.

WILVOS Australian wildlife needs us. From not feeding birds, to reducing our speeds, to replanting rainforest, we are the ones who can save and help increase the wildlife population of this beautiful hinterland. S

PEAKING WITH MEL BELL, Maleny wildlife carer and member of WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc.) I am reminded of lyrics written by Pete Seeger in the late 50s, ... where have all the flowers gone, long time passing ...

Mel moved to Maleny almost two years ago and describes herself as ‘a bit of a mad old possum lady’. Previously she was a carer for eight years with a Sydney wildlife rescue group. Possums, bandicoots, antechinus and birds have all found their way into Mel’s care. “You spend a lot of time feeding and looking after possums. I now have specialist knowledge, whereas another WILVOS member Sammy Ringer specialises in bats. “Most people don’t know that Bat Rescue will provide free heavy-duty, wildlife-friendly netting to homeowners for their fruit trees. “Sammy does an enormous amount of rescues of all kinds of wildlife. We have about six carers in Maleny, a number we would like to increase. The less carers and support you’ve got, the more it impacts on those doing it,” said Mel. Looking through the eyes of a newcomer, Mel’s gaze scans the land around her North Maleny property. “This is all relatively new growth. A friend who lives

nearby planted a rainforest when she moved here about 30 years ago. She said it was a 360-degree clear view back then. “It seems that a lot of people are planting rainforest and native trees. I’m also aware of a working group that tends the gully near Hakea Street. As a result of their plantings the bird population has increased.” While it is obvious that many Hinterland residents care about the wildlife there is also the flipside. Mel shares a story she calls, the Baroon Pocket carnage. “A carer at Witta was manning the hotline and took a call about an injured wallaby on Baroon Pocket Road. It was reported that a wallaby had been knocked down by a car and the joey hopped away. Sammy and I attended in the hope we could find the joey which would certainly die if unattended. We didn’t find it. “A woman from Sunshine Coast Wildlife Rescue was there and had euthanised the injured mother, a red-necked wallaby. “While at the scene we realised that there was another injured wallaby in the grass right near where we were sitting. It was completely smashed. “At that point the police arrived. They euthanised that animal then on checking, we found a joey in its pouch. It was not viable and taken to the vet. That was four animals gone in one hit.

Do you know what your pet is thinking? Would you like to know? I work safely and efficiently with your beloved fur friends to help them overcome and heal from previous experiences throughout its life. Humans have ‘off’ days, so too do animals. I can help lessen these and increase the ‘good’ days. If you have just bought a new baby animal into the house from their litter mates, I can help with the stress of the transition. The same goes for older animals, whether they be rescue or foster.

“Another call came a few days later. A big male wallaby had been hit in that same spot. “We talked to the neighbours. They said that even though it’s an 80km speed limit, cars come belting down there and anything that’s crossing particularly at dawn or dusk doesn’t stand a chance. So, we’ve lost a whole mob of wallabies, a little family just in that one spot,” Mel shared still distressed and frustrated by the experience. Local veterinarian support is integral to the work of WILVOS. Mel has high praise for their care. “The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is a separate facility located at the back of the zoo. The public can have a ‘sneak peek’ from the viewing area where you can watch operations. The staff are so patient even though they’re stretched to the limit. We don’t know how lucky we to have that place. “Also, our vets are wonderful. The don’t get paid for tending native wildlife. It’s a voluntary service.” It is obvious that the care of our wildlife is not a WILVOS issue but a community responsibility. There are a multitude of ways that we can assist. Plant native trees. Put out bowls of water in dry weather but don’t feed the birds or animals. I was taken aback to learn that giving birds a bowl of sunflower seeds is like giving them a bowl of lollies. Mindfulness when driving is key to wildlife conservation. Slow down and be watchful, particularly at dawn and dusk. A learning curve for me from my discussion with Mel was to put the wildlife hotline and emergency numbers in my phone. I relate to the fact that people can be shocked or panicked if they hit an animal. Allow those with training to guide you as to the best course of action. “It’s not just about caring for wildlife, people can help in other ways: join WILVOS, train to man the wildlife hotline, be an online warrior and lobby your local

Andy the ringtail possum Image Gay Liddington

MP about deforestation. People can knit or sew pouches or assist by transporting animals.” At the time of our chat Mel was caring for a young adult ringtail possum rescued from Maleny’s Riverside Centre. She named him Andy. “He was sitting in a tree being attacked by birds. I took the possum to the wildlife hospital. They removed the ticks, cleaned its wounds then I brought it home with a week’s supply of antibiotics.” To conclude, Sammy Ringer hits home a message: “As Maleny grows more populous, the homes of our wildlife shrinks. Bushland is flattened, trees lopped, former habitat clear-felled to make way for yet another ‘lifestyle development’. The critters that live there are savagely evicted.” With Sammy’s words echoing I reach back to Pete Seeger’s lyrics wondering if one day we’ll say: Where have all the wildlife gone, long time passing ... and ask, when will we ever learn, when will we ever learn?

Feedback on Cooke Park Playground closes Nov 3 HT has been approached by community members who see the upgrade of Cooke Park Playground an opportunity for something extraordinary. Other have told Council to just get it done – what do you think?

From Travis Earsman Cooke Park Playground Community Group

C

OOKE PARK WAS built to commemorate Maleny pioneers Ada and Alfred Cooke, whose family donated the land to the community in 1946. Since this time it has been a place of rest and recreation and its historic entrance shelter, clock tower and established trees are testament to this heritage. Situated in the very heart of the town, Cooke Park’s identity has long been resonant with the spirit of Maleny. In October of this year the much-loved playground in Cooke Park was demolished. Whilst Council had followed protocol in their efforts to advise the community of this by

posting a sign, the majority of the residents simply had no idea it was going to happen. Once demolition had been carried out, images began to circulate on social media of the play facility that Council were intending to install as part of an ‘upgrade’. The community response was largely one of disappointment, as the proposed playground was an offthe-shelf facility that had nothing of the unique charm and multi-faceted play opportunities of the old playground. For it to truly be an upgrade, and truly honour the park’s rich heritage, the new facility would also need to be at least as imaginative and artistic as the old one, built by Harry Pearson in 2009 and listed on the Public Art Register. It would also need to cater for all ages and all facets of ‘play’; the physical, creative, cognitive, social and individual needs of the child, as well as facilitate quiet-play. Council have halted construction after a public outcry, and have responded to the call for community consultation by offering one alternate design example. This is an important step forward, as Option 2 is quite close to what was there before.

As Council have indicated that they are open to a submission from the community, our proposal would be this: Council builds Option 2 with significant input from the community; directed either by Council’s excellent in-house designer or a private designer sourced by the community. This is a direction that, if accepted, would certainly deliver a facility that is truly representative of both the Council and the community’s vision as well as meeting the children’s needs. Councillor Jenny McKay from Sunshine Coast Council responded to HT’s questions: A community group has indicated to HT they would like more involvement in the upgrade of Cooke Park Playground, is there scope for this? The decision regarding what play equipment is installed and potential for further community involvement will depend on the outcome of the survey which closes on 3 November 2017.

would require to adhere to Council’s purchasing policy, and community involvement would need to be managed to ensure an open and transparent process which is fair to everyone. In addition, playgrounds standards would have to be strictly adhered to ensure children’s safety. Is the path, gate, trees and fencing to make the park safer available on both options? The works for the path, gate and trees are available for both options. Could toilets also be part of the plan? There are existing toilets (near the Community Hall) a 145m walk away from the park. Council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy, which was

subject to extensive community engagement, sets out the desired standards of service for parks, and toilets are not included on the list of suitable embellishments for local recreation parks. VOTE TODAY - you have until 5pm November 3: https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/cookepark-playground/ Alternatively, you can email your feedback to parkscapitalworks@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au To contact Travis Earsman, call 5435 2047 or mobile: 0427 705 315 or via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/malenytown/

Glasses won’t make you smarter. Using your health fund by Dec 31 will.

How much consultation/where was consultation prior to the removal? The project was considered renewal of playground equipment (Council has 334 playgrounds with an asset renewal program based on regular inspections) and, as the replacement offered an increased range of play opportunities and was in a relatively small local park, was not subject to community consultation. This allows the maximum budget to be spent on ‘on-ground’ play equipment rather than internal Council costs. The old timber play equipment had the following play value: two level fort, two climbing nets, single slide (plastic), entry ramp, toddler and child swing set and Spica spinner. The proposed play equipment (option 1 in the survey) has: Two platforms, spider net bug game and anatomy of a bee panels, ‘logo’ and ‘sunbeam’ climbers (wonky shaped ladders), double slide (plastic), single rope climb, toddler and child swing set, Spica spinner and ‘caterpillar’ tunnel. The play equipment is manufactured and installed by ‘Playscape Creations’ who deliver a high quality product.

Get new eyewear with your 2017 optical extras by December 31 or they’ll be gone for good.

Could you clarify why was it removed and has it been relocated? Initially, with hopes of retaining the structure, a structural engineer was commissioned by Council to inspect the structure and advised against retaining it due to extensive rot. The structure has been removed by the contractor and not been used elsewhere by Council.

See Better. See Us.

What a year 2017 has been for 11-year-old Ryan Engle. The Maleny State School student has been extremely busy representing not just his school and district, but his region and state in both Swimming and Track and Field (athletics). And there is certainly more to come...

The making of an athlete Ryan Engle from Maleny is now training for the Pacific Games in Adelaide

UST LAST MONTH, MALENY STATE SCHOOL STUDENT, Ryan Engle competed in the Queensland School Track and Field State Championships held in Brisbane and performed outstandingly, winning gold medals for discus, shot-put and a bronze for the 100m. He also qualified for the long jump and 200m for Nationals. Ryan has been invited to be a member of the Queensland School Sport 10-12 years Track and Field Team to participate in the upcoming Pacific School Games in Adelaide from December 2 to December 6, 2017. Amazingly, he also qualified for swimming, but had to choose between the two. Certainly Ryan works hard for all this success. “I train twice a week for athletics, and two-to-three times a week for swimming. My favourite stroke is breaststroke, and in track and field events I enjoy discus, shotput and 100m.” Earlier this year in March, Ryan also attended the Queensland School Sport Australia Swimming State Championships and performed exceptionally well in the 10-12 multiclass 50m breaststroke claiming the gold medal and silver in the 50m backstroke; also qualifying for the 50m freestyle for Nationals. When asked how he feels about these achievements, he smiles. “It makes me feel good. I feel proud of what I have done.” 2016 was the first year Ryan was able to compete at a higher representative level. His PE Teacher, Mr Shane

Turner is very proud of him, “This achievement is not to be underestimated as it is very rare for a student to represent Queensland in two different sports in one year at a National level.” For swimming, Ryan competed for Queensland at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in Darwin, September, 2016. “This carnival showcased the best talent in the nation and Ryan established himself as a formidable competitor, with a bronze medal in the 10-12-year old multiclass relay and setting PB’s in individual strokes,” said Shane. For athletics, Ryan then competed for Queensland at the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships on November, 2016 at the Olympic Park, Sydney. “Once again Ryan exhibited his high class sporting ability collecting many medals over the carnival and broke an astonishing five Australian records. Gold medals for discus, shot-put and long jump, ” stated Shane. “The passion and dedication Ryan demonstrates was acknowledged when he was invited to attend the Talent 4 Tokyo Event at the University of Queensland of June last year,” he said. This event focussed on Talent ID Testing stations and specific sports trials and questions that aspiring athletes

like Ryan could attend and be identified for the next generation paralympians. Despite his busy schedule, Ryan is also keen on other sports, “Bushrangers rugby union, and I also love motorbike riding.” Mum Sally says he rides his motorbike like a “crusty demon” and does wheelies outside her work on his pushbike. Friends have said, “How can you do a wheelie with one hand, I can’t do it with two?” “We call it Ryan’s ability. People just see Ryan for his spirit now, they don’t even notice his hand.” After regular Children’s Hospital visits when he was little, staff told them to never hold Ryan back, to let him have a go at everything. When he wanted to learn how to fish, Sally said it took them a couple of hours of casting, but they worked out strategies with him. The avid fisherman now enters fishing competitions. But ask him what he’ll be watching at the Commonwealth Games and the answer is no surprise, “Track and field, and swimming,” he grins. Ryan’s number one fans through all of this are his family, his mum Sally, his dad Herb and brother, Tyron. Sally noticed Ryan’s talent for sport from a young age. “He always had impeccable hand, eye, foot coordination from a very small child. I always said ‘that boy should have been born with a ball,’” Sally shares. “He was playing with balls, kicking them, has always loved sports from a young age. He is the conversion kicker for his Bushranger rugby union team and has an amazing eye for lining it up.

Nationals 2016: Ryan Engle with the 5 Australian records he broke and two golds for discus and long jump and silver for shotput at Olympic Park Sydney

“With regards to swimming, it actually was a total surprise to us that Ryan was a talented swimmer. This year he tied runner up age champion at school which was so exciting, it’s the little things like that that can mean the most.” Ryan first started with the Maleny Little Athletics Club when he was four years old, entering into his first Glasshouse Pentathlon. “They have been a fantastic club to nurture him along his journey,” says Sally. So what drives Ryan to be such an achiever? The answer is simple to him, “I love playing sport and like competing to do my best.” Sally and Herb are enjoying him going from strength to strength, but they are also aware that he has had some amazing support along the way. “We would like to thank the Maleny State School, Maleny Apex Club and the Maleny Little Athletics Club for their much appreciated support. And a special thank you to his coach Panayis Negropontis for his valued time and dedication to Ryan,” says Sally. “Also Mr Shane Turner from the Maleny State School who has backed Ryan every step of the way and without him Ryan wouldn’t be where he is today.”

AN AUTHENTIC ADVOCATE

A definite destination when visiting the Sunshine Coast Hinterland must be Flame Hill Vineyard. Driving in to the property, you are treated to an expansive view across undulating hills and a distant stretch of vivid blue ocean on the horizon. Victoria McGuin recently went to find out the secret behind the success of this stunning venue. Above: Tony Thompson against the backdrop of vibrant Flame Hill by Victoria McGuin

HINTERLAND TIMES – NOVEMBER 2017

HIS IS A PLACE CREATED for sensory pleasure – in particular your tastebuds! Flame Hill boasts award-winning wines, which are estate-grown, and fine food, which is uniquely paddock-toplate, or locally sourced. (It smells mouthwateringly good when I arrive and takes all my selfcontrol not to suggest I sample a few dishes for review!) I met Tony Thompson, who owns Flame Hill, a few years ago in this very spot, and it is good to catch up and hear how things are continually improving for this magical spot. “We are more expansive with our grape varieties now,” Tony tells me. “We won a Gold in a national show with our Fiano (a white grape), and this year our Barbera won Gold at the Queensland Wine Awards.” The awards side of the business has certainly kicked in,

with more results due in a few weeks for other national shows. “We participate in the Australian Small Winemakers Show annually,” Tony continues. “It’s a very competitive event with almost all Australian and New Zealand wineries eligible to participate.” Tony’s enthusiasm for the humble grape is obvious. “We have a good selection of alternative varieties now, like Tempranillo, Montville Verdelho, Muscat and Pinot Gris. And we’re turning out 20,000 bottles a year from the Cellar Door, with an increase of 20% every year. People are really embracing our wines.” Flame Hill’s main clients tend to be from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “You see all different levels of sophistication and culture, which is great. I’ve noticed though that we generally attract couples, groups of couples and girl groups – it’s rarely groups of guys.”

Tony believes Flame Hill has business maturity now and the brand is well known. “People know what we are and what we do. And it’s good to go out there and always hear positives.” The team work hard for their success, with a market garden, vineyard and cattle station all on site. There is even a staff member solely dedicated to growing produce for the kitchen. “We’re planting more orchards,” Tony says. “On our other property on the Granite Belt, we are planting heirloom stone fruit… all the varieties that commercially and logistically the major supermarkets don’t want for various reasons. We know their value and flavour, so we will grow them.” As we talk, I see some substantially-sized chickens roaming between the vineyards. “We use their eggs for our kitchen, grow our own herbs and vegetables, and our own grass-fed Angus beef.” Tony feels that there is a great deal of false marketing these days impacting negatively on the wine and food industry. “Virtual Wineries – no vineyard, no winery, only a sales point cellar door or restaurant purchasing product, in some cases interstate product, and sticking their label on the bottle. “And too many businesses use ‘handmade’, ‘organic’, ‘local’, ‘grass-fed’’ – but is it? The community is often being conned and it’s not good enough. Not enough local businesses support local producers. “The Edge in Montville has started stocking our wine, which is smart. Most choose to buy from outside the region based solely on price, rather than quality. Patrons visit our region to experience what is local and regional –

Content chickens and the rooster amongst the vineyards

not to have cheese from Victoria and wine from South Australia.” The apparent false advertising that Tony sees on his travels is clearly a bone of contention, but he concludes with the belief, “You can be unique these days just by being authentic.” Indeed, Flame Hill is something original on the Range. Where else can you experience a wine tasting, with locallyproduced cheeses, have a picnic on the bluff, or savour handmade food perched on the terrace of a 300-acre cattle farm and vineyard? However, Tony is not one to rest on his laurels. “I love this business! Hospitality is a hard gig, and the people are nomadic, so sometimes it is a challenge, but it is varied and interesting. We now have on site accommodation, so patrons can ‘wine, dine, play and stay’. “Our core business is wine and the main vineyard at the Granite Belt takes up a lot of my attention, but we are creating something special here at Flame Hill Montville. The next venture– a national quality art award, perhaps every second year – and of course Grape Stomp is powering ahead.” For those who haven’t heard of Grape Stomp, this annual event is a combination of food, wine and live music, where everyone lets their hair down, and guests clamber in barrels to stomp the grapes with their bare feet! “It’s happening on February 24. We can accommodate 500 people and we’ve already sold over 200 tickets. We’ve built a stage out front and that’s where Swing Central will play. I like the jazz and cabaret for this festival, it suits the atmosphere.” As I leave, two groups are enjoying wine tasting at the

bar, and people are arriving for lunch. I chat with some of them, a few are from New South Wales, one is from Tasmania, but the rest are Queenslanders. A wine writer, Mike Benny, who was incredibly impressed with Flame Hill’s wines, once said to Tony, “Your problem is not getting people to drink your wine, it’s getting Queenslanders to drink your wine!” I’m not sure if that is a problem any more. For more information on Flame Hill and Grape Stomp, visit: www.flamehill.com.au

Maleny Singers join with

pera Queensland

M

ALENY ARTS COUNCIL’S upcoming concert Queensland Opera Sings for Maleny will feature Maleny’s own singers, already in rehearsal under the baton of director Margaret Taylor. The program will be performed in the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday November 12 at 2pm. MAC’s recent concert with the three tenors, Tenori, was a triumph, and one member of the full house said, ‘This was the best concert I’ve been to in years let’s have more like this’.

Tenori’s program included songs from opera to Andrew Lloyd Webber, Dean Martin to Leonard Cohen, so the Opera Queensland performance won’t be quite the same. They are, however, creating a program just for Maleny, so hinterland theatre lovers won’t hear this selection of songs anywhere else. As everyone knows, too, the Maleny Singers are guaranteed to give great value for money but they are not revealing what their segment will consist of, so the audience are in for a surprise. Opera Qld’s repertoire will include some of opera’s ‘swoon’ melodies, like the trio from Cosi fan tutte, and the Flower duet from Delibes’ Lakmé, together with popular classics from Handel, Johann Strauss, Gilbert and Sullivan and beyond. Celebrated Jason Barry-Smith, popular with Maleny audiences, will again entertain as lead singer and MC of the new program. He will be assisted by Brisbane’s ‘Queen of Coloratura’, Katie Stenzel, and mezzo-soprano Jessica Low. They will sing popular songs made famous by legendary Australian singers like Peter Dawson, Gladys Moncrieff and Joan Sutherland. One of the Arts Council’s most popular concerts in recent years was Opera Queensland’s The Adventures of Figaro in 2015, and many people asked for a return visit. President Jennifer Radbourne is looking forward to this special production. “It is rare in a country town to have a performance of the State Opera. So again, we have been able to bring the group to Maleny so we don’t have to drive to Brisbane for this treat.

CHRISTMAS

WE ARE NOW

“At the Tenori concert in October one of the tenors, David Kidd, told the audience that fewer and fewer towns had the advantage of an Arts Council bringing quality music and theatre to country people, who are finding it more and more difficult to access theatre in the capital cities.

As with every Arts Council presentation, the audience is invited on to the deck of the Maleny Community Centre where members provide nibbles and sandwiches, and patrons can buy drinks from the MCC’s bar.

Recipes for Remembrance Remembrance Day services are held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of November, 2017, by our local RSL members. This year we also have a special request from Kenilworth community groups and Maleny Library.

Wreaths for Kenilworth At Anzac Day this year we found that many wreaths from florists cost around $100 each, which most local organisations have difficulty in funding. So a group of local folk have decided to ‘have a go’ at making wreaths for Remembrance Day on November 11. On Friday afternoon, November 10, from 2pm, please come to the RSL rooms at the Kenilworth Show Hall, and we will help you make a wreath for your organisation or family. We have some of the plastic holders which we can use, but we will need flowers and greenery. If you have flowers which you would like to donate, you can either drop them at the RSL room in the afternoon, or give Yvonne James a call on 5472 3089 and she will arrange to come and collect them from you.

GENERAL OR ENDURING POWER OF ATTORNEY There can be a multitude of reasons why you will need someone else to act on your behalf – you may be travelling overseas where communication is difficult or you may be experiencing a serious health problem such as lengthy hospital stays or loss of mental capacity. This is where a Power of Attorney comes in. The grant of a Power of Attorney can either be made as a general grant for a particular purpose and for a particular time frame as long as the purpose of the grant does not relate to medical or personal matters; or as an enduring grant for an unlimited time frame for financial, personal and health matters. It is important to distinguish between a grant of power of attorney and a will. A grant of power of attorney can only be used when the person granting the power is alive. Should that person die, then the grant of power of attorney ceases to be of effect and the Will takes over. Everyone should consider appointing someone to act as their enduring attorney. The choice of an attorney should be taken with a lot of care and thought and should be someone you have complete trust in. When appointing someone as your enduring attorney you can specify exactly in which circumstance that person will act as your attorney. An example is the circumstance where you have been assessed by a medical practitioner as having lost capacity. To remove someone as an attorney is also possible by you expressly revoking that power. By appointing an enduring attorney you are protecting yourself against the possibility that should you one day lose capacity to manage your own affairs you will not put your financial position at risk. It is an insurance policy worth having!

LIVING IN DIVISION 5 C O U N C I L L O R J E N N Y M C K AY

SPRING / SUMMER 2017/18

From your councillor On the agenda at the annual Local Government Authority Queensland conference was that very hot topic of residential properties for short-term accommodation booked through online agencies.

What’s being talked about in our community? Why are only some rural roads sealed?

What’s being done about dusty roads?

Literally, I could die in the dust over this issue. There have been some achievements under the implementation of the Rural Roads Policy to address the need for more sealed roads in the hinterland. This policy has been developed to establish which roads hold priority over others. Data that includes traffic numbers, heavy vehicle usage, connection to town centres and school bus routes is analysed to ensure that the roads in most need are prioritised. While this does not seal a road, it ensures that there is objectivity around the priority of the road to be sealed, and it guards against loud lobbyists holding sway.

Sunshine Coast University has partnered with council to trial alternative dust suppressants suitable for some rural roads. I have been proactive securing three trials in Division 5, but unfortunately although the methodology seemed sound, all failed shortly after implementation. The only solution to the dust problem is a significant investment by council into the Road Sealing Program. Funding has been increased in the 2017/18 financial year but still fails to meet the growing costs of sealing rural roads in our division.

We want the government to require booking agencies to supply councils with property addresses. This will help ensure these properties comply with planning schemes and rating requirements. Councils need to have a clear policy position regarding this matter. What do you think? We also want the State to undertake an immediate review of the legislation and regulations for council procurement so that it is more adaptive to an evolving digital environment, more responsive to innovative proposals and products and more supportive of start-ups and entrepreneurialism. Closer to home, I am lobbying for intersection upgrades at Western Avenue, Montville and at Jubilee Drive and Chevallum Road, Palmwoods. Improving access to Conondale Memorial Park is still needed along with an upgrade of the rail line through our railway towns and improvements to telecommunications in the hinterland and Conondale Ranges. You have my assurance that I will remain focussed on all of these issues until they are resolved.

Cr Jenny

There are many thousands of Sunshine Coast residents and holidaymakers who would love to use public transport more often, !"#$ %$#&'$#&( )*+#,!#,-(#(, "%.# if better travel options were available. Sunshine Coast is Australia’s fifth largest council and our region requires a far superior public transport system to the one we have in 2017. Providing an efficient public transport service is the responsibility of the State Government, but successive governments have spent too little for too long on rail and public transport in our region.

I share residents’ frustrations with speed limits on rural and hinterland roads and understand that many wish to change them. In Queensland, speed /010&%# ($#%$&#-!"$(#&'$#2 !- /#,)#3!0),(1#4( )*+# Control Devices. Council determines speed limits on roads under its control in line with these guidelines. It’s quite a process to change a speed limit, requiring sign-off by representatives from Queensland Police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads and council staff in accordance with the Australian Standards. You’ll find more information about this on council’s website. Meanwhile motorists should drive to the speed limit and road conditions because lowering the speed, if possible, without policing it will not make the roads safe. Only motorists can do this.

Your council is committed to strongly advocating for progress with new and improved services.

Rural subdivisions

We are joining our residents and our business community in urging our local State members to commit to providing a better public transport system so we can reduce road congestion and improve connectivity across our region.

The South East Queensland Regional Plan has been revised by the State Government, but unfortunately changes to rural subdivisions were not included in the recommendations. Rural subdivisions are not permitted without a balance lot of 100 hectares.

Our Sunshine Coast’s 300,000 residents and millions of visitors deserve better. Mayor Mark Jamieson

OR MARCIA, moving to Maleny has completed a circle. She was born and raised a country girl, but found she and husband Chris needed to be where their work took them. As owners of Elders Real Estate at Morayfield, this meant living in a suburban environment. “We were always drawn to country living,” said Marcia. “Our dream was to live on acreage, growing our own veggies. Now we can. We have the best of both worlds, still running our own business, but living in rural Witta.” Chris bring a wealth of knowledge to Maleny Mowers. From a mechanical background, he once worked with his brother-in-law who owned a

Husqvarna dealership in Ballarat, Victoria. Being a family-owned and operated business, it is important for them to maintain continuity with existing customers. “We were very pleased to keep Paul Sullivan (head technician) and newly qualified Adam Morris when we took over the business in July,” said Chris. “These two blokes not only know the equipment from the ground up, they also know the locals. We are committed to giving the best possible customer service we can.” If a shop full of customers and a constantly ringing phone are anything to go by, this warm friendly couple will settle well into the Hinterland.

Welcome to new owners of Maleny Mowers, Marcia and Chris Smith

Parochial and proud of it

Across three categories of Best Newspaper in Country Queensland 2017, Michelle and Heatley Gilmore won two second places for the Hinterland Times, and a second and third place for Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News - and are pictured with winning newspaper Noosa News owner Paul Thomas

IN THE 2017 Best Newspaper employing under 2 Journalists and Best Newspaper over 10000 Circulation we were second place after Noosa News. Judges explained, "Most of the publications were extremely close when comparing journalism, and photography, but the winning entries also really excelled in advertising and production scores." "With very little margin between first and second", and "Last year’s winner was again an excellent example of a quality newspaper. This publication also scored equally well in all judging areas." HT was highly commended for The Terrace Seafood Restaurant ad campaign, house ad Thinking of Selling your Home? and the Rainbow Getaway Holiday Apartments ad, due to the "sales pitch, enticing illustration, offer and benefits and testimonials – this advert has it all". We also gained a second place for the Healthy Homewares in Best Locally Produced Print Advertisement. Jody Gilchrist's highly commended photograph–

‘Ally at the Market” was applauded for "good composition and bright colours" - and a first for a photography mention for the paper. It was a great night for non-daily newspapers all over Queensland, and judges felt the increase in entries this year and the addition of newspapers from the northern part of the State certainly added to quality and quantity of entries this year. Judges loved that ours and other papers were "still very relevant to your local markets, extremely parochial, and passionately focused on local issues". There is no doubt, we are very blessed with our top-notch team – our writers Victoria, Dale and Gay, designers Darren and Leanne, super sales rep who was Highly Commended for Advertising Sales Rep of the Year Karen, and website man Wayne! Here iS aN exciTiNg subculture of printmaking talent in the Blackall ranges, and this talent is being showcased at the Montville art gallery throughout November. Our local printmakers are world-class and produce an abundance of stunning original art.

Printmaking covers a vast array of techniques from etchings with metal plates, to relief printmaking with lino and woodblocks, and mono-printing. The subject range is vast, with imagination going into overdrive. Some of the local printmakers featured during this time are Kim Herringe (pictured above), Sandra Pearce, Julie Hanrahan, Neville Field and Jennifer eurell amongst others. Our printmakers use hand-printing and timeconsuming methods to produce what are truly individual works of fine art. The prints are editioned and signed by the artist, and Montville art gallery will have a range of these available for purchase during November. There will also be forthcoming printmaking workshops beginning with an all-day Monotype printing workshop on November 11 – you can register your interest at the gallery on 07 5442 9211 or montart@montart.com.au.

HINTERLAND TIMES – NOVEMBER 2017

Steve says ‘When Stacey and I came to Maleny a year ago, we hoped the business would hold its own as we found our feet. So we were really pleased when we reached our twelve month small business goals in the first six months’. Whilst the current premises on Bunya Street have been great for the business, Steve believes the new office in Rainforest Plaza will provide room for further growth. ‘We decided to take the next step after such a successful year in business. The new office is nearly twice as large so it means we have the ability to grow with the business’ Steve says. ‘And parking is always an issue. As the new office will be located at the back of Rainforest Plaza, there’s ample parking for our clients’. With two of the local banks recently closing their stores in Maleny, Steve feels it’s even more important to provide an environment where clients and other service providers are able to meet to talk. ‘Whilst property law today means matters can progress and communication can occur electronically, it’s not always appropriate. I’m at the office five days a week and sometimes there’s no substitute for meeting face to face and we’ll have two dedicated meeting rooms for that’. Mary McIver, solicitor with Baker Robinson Lawyers, echoes Steve’s sentiments: ‘At difficult times in succession and elder law, clients like to see me to go through things and I’m looking forward to being able to accommodate the biggest of families at Rainforest Plaza!’. From 1 January 2018 you’ll be able to find Baker Robinson Lawyers at Suite 7, 43 Maple Street, Maleny. Access is via Maple Street or 5494 2665 Bicentenary Lane.

World class printmakers on display T

HERE IS AN ExCITING subculture of printmaking talent in the Blackall Ranges, and this talent is being showcased at the Montville Art Gallery throughout November. “Our local printmakers are world-class and produce an abundance of stunning original art,” shares Tracey Malkin from Montville Art Gallery. Printmaking covers a vast array of techniques from etchings with metal plates, to relief printmaking with lino and woodblocks, and mono-printing. The subject range is vast, with imagination going into overdrive. Lino printing has been taken to a whole new level with the development of ‘reductive lino prints’. This is where the artist carves their lino block, then inks and prints it, carves more from the same block and inks and overprints with the next colour. This process is repeated, continually carving and printing from the same block until the image is complete (printing from 2 to 15, sometimes more, colours). As the block is carved, it is ‘reduced’, hence the name of the process. The end result is a detailed, complex and very compelling edition of work. An edition which cannot be reprinted as the lino block is completely different from the beginning. “One of our leading printmakers in this field is Kim Herringe, who also uses antique manuscripts and ledger books, often from the Far East, in a variety of printmaking media,” says Tracey. “The paper is of high quality, albeit slightly blemished by the passage of time and gives a wonderful patina and variation to her printmaking.”

Another form of printmaking is Monoprinting, where an original image is printed as a single unique print. These prints can be enhanced with other forms of art, for example hand-colouring or collage, and are also beautiful works of art in their own right. “Our printmakers use hand-printing and timeconsuming methods to produce what are truly individual works of fine art,” Tracey explains. The prints are editioned and signed by the artist, and Montville Art Gallery will have a range of these available for purchase during November. There will also be forthcoming printmaking workshops – you will be able to register your interest at the gallery on 07 5442 9211 or montart@montart.com.au

Danger Music

Two Steps Forward

Anatomy

By Eddie Ayers

By Graeme Simison & Anne Buist

by Beatrice Alemagna

From the former ABC Classic FM classicist comes a remarkable story about the power of music and the courage to be one's self. In 2014 Emma was spiralling into a deep depression, driven by anguish about her gender. She quit the radio show she had been presenting for many years, travelled, and decided on a surprising path to salvation teaching music in a war zone. The danger, sorrow and joy of the place and the people is conveyed so sensitively by the author, whose own demons lurk in the background but do not take centre stage. In Danger Music, Eddie takes us through the bombing and chaos of Kabul, into the lives of the Afghan children who are transported by Bach, Abba, Beethoven and their own exhilarating Afghan music. Alongside these epic experiences, Emma determines to take the final steps to secure her own peace; she becomes the man that was always there inside - Eddie.

Zoe, a sometime artist, is from California. Martin, an engineer, is from Yorkshire. Both have ended up in picturesque Cluny, in central France. Both are struggling to come to terms with their recent past—for Zoe, the death of her husband; for Martin, a messy divorce. Looking to make a new start, each sets out alone to walk two thousand kilometres from Cluny to Santiago, in northwestern Spain, in the footsteps of pilgrims who have walked the Camino—the Way—for centuries. In this smart, funny and romantic journey, Martin’s and Zoe’s stories are told in alternating chapters by husbandand-wife team Graeme Simsion [The Rosie Project] and Anne Buist. Two Steps Forward is a novel about renewal— physical, psychological and spiritual. It’s about the challenge of the journey and of working out where you are going. And it’s about what you decide to keep, what you choose to leave behind and what you rediscover.

Here’s the human body as you’ve never seen it before. Clever cut-outs and hidden flaps explore every detail of the organs, systems and senses that make up this marvellous machine. This fact-filled journey through the human body is by Helene Druvert, the acclaimed author and illustrator of Paris Up, Up and Away and Mary Poppins Up, Up and Away. A fantastically informative book for young and old alike.

Ben will have his latest tiny house on display at the market and looks forward to sharing and answering burning questions about the process. Julia helped establish CHASM last year following the Housing Conversations at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in 2015. The group is trialing a bold initiative for communityowned affordable housing in Maleny for the town’s most vulnerable. Currently fundraising to build their first home in the Maple Street Co-op Garden, CHASM is keen to hear from people who’d like to help. Hinterland Harvest Market is every Saturday (6-11am) in the Suncoast carpark, Woombye. Thanks to Cr Jenny McKay and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for their support. C R E AT I V E C U T S Pete Daffy at Finbars

Kelly Cork at the Orangery

A New Day Dawning

Peter Daffy sounds like an old fashioned country rockabilly and music hall singer who's stepped out of another era. His shows cover everything from early folk blues to 1920's pop standards and 1950's "honky tonk" country to classic rockabilly. All this retro music diversity is punctuated by Peter's original songs and instrumentals. Peter will be ably supported by local guitar whiz Paul Bulyani, long time collaborator Jim Green (Melbourne) and Jem Dunlop (Maleny). Enjoy early folk blues, “honky tonk” country, rockabilly and more from Pete Daff and Friends 6.30pm, Friday November 24 at Finbars.

Kelly’s well-crafted songs are inspired by his observations of the mysterious and sometimes cruel irony of life's journey, with poetic lyrics that only a top songwriter can create. With his varying musical styles and, whether with his band of first class musicians or solo, Kelly takes his audience on a journey - he is a true entertainer. He was a former member of the bands The Rain and As The Crow Flies. Several of his songs have been short-listed by the Australian Songwriters Association Awards with one winning the 2016 Open Category. See him play during your evening tapas, November 11 at the Orangery.

Last Open Studios for 2017

So grab a picnic lunch and explore at your leisure the artistic wonders of our Hinterland and surrounds. Please visit our website for maps and artist information artsconnectinc.com.au

The Christmas theme at the Reflection Gallery in the Montville Uniting Church is A New Day Dawning. Members of the congregation are working on a distinctive banner highlighting the theme, and the walls will carry a series of sunrise photos taken by photographer, Ric Todhunter, of Mt Coolum. His work can be viewed at: www.rictodhunterphotography.com. The theme is based on the idea that a new day dawned for the world with the birth of Jesus. This display will run from November 11 to December 31. Opening hours: 10am - 3pm. Entry is free.

Scarecrows out until Nov 10 A spikey echidna is just one of many Mary Valley Festival scarecrows, hosted by Mary Valley Artslink. Sponsored by the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce, creations will be on display until November 10, with winners announced at the inaugural “harvest dinner” at Kandanga Farm Store. You don’t have to enter to be a winner either. There is $50 up for grabs by taking a photo of yourself with as many scarecrows as possible in the Mary Valley until November 11. Post the selfies on the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival Facebook page and hashtag #mvscarecrows http://www.maryvalleyartslink.com.au

A dynamic acoustic pair from New South Wales, with six years of experience performing together. Adam & Ash cover a range of contemporary hits, seasoning them with their own flavour; a little bit of social awkwardness paired with dutch courage, humour, skill and passion, you're in for a memorable experience. This year in June after nearly 500 gigs together, Adam & Ash decided to take a break and go on an indefinite hiatus. The shows at Maleny Hotel on November 11,12, will be both their first show in Queensland and after their longest ever musical break! Don't miss out on the chance to see these guys live.

I

T IS A LITTLE-KNOWN fact, that in Shakespeare’s Richard III, for the sake of a more dramatic narrative, Shakespeare misquotes King Richard III as saying “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!” When in fact Richard III who was an avid gardener, knew that if he could just get a few bales of mulch he could plant a hedge that would have kept his enemies at bay and that he was much more likely to have said “Mulch, mulch my kingdom for some mulch!” ... maybe. But seriously, mulch is marvellous stuff, for numerous reasons including moisture retention, feeding and protecting top soil, weed suppression etc. What are the types of mulch I hear you ask? First up we have bale mulch (straw), this is not only good for the veggie patch but in combination with our Pink Guards one of my favourite options for establishing trees and shrubs. Apply bale mulch liberally at up to a quarter bale per plant and watch your trees grow! Next up we have chip or shredded mulches of wood, bark or leaf. These are potentially the longest-lived mulches (if high in wood), but heavier to move around. If they contain a high percentage of wood they can rob the soil of nitrogen initially while they break down, but this can be countered with an additional organic based nitrogen rich fertiliser.

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193

Apply at approximately 100-150mm thick. Finally, there are mulch blankets and mats. These are light and easy to install, but the blankets can be very costly and act mainly as a weed preventative or erosion protecting layer with less benefit to feeding the topsoil like the previous types. One word of caution, the reflection of light and heat from straw and chip mulches can burn the stems of tender freshly planted stock, particularly when temperatures are in the 30’s (this can be overcome by using tree guards such as our Pink Guards). In addition to helping get your plants off to a great start, mulch helps kick-start your plantings by creating a forest type soil that is full of all the microbes, fungi, insects and whole host of other micro fauna. All this life can thrive in and below a mulch layer not much deeper than 100mm, and creates the perfect conditions for healthy tree and shrub development. Notice my not so subtle mention of the use of Pink Guards throughout this article? Not only are we stocking these, but Forest Heart Eco-Nursery is also stocking Rocky Point Sugarcane Mulch. Give your plantings a kick start this spring and help keep your soils moist after the recent rains and mulch, mulch, mulch.

After the Rain

T

HIS MONTH THE main topic of conversation is the abundance of water. How quickly things can change. Dams are full, tanks overflowing, and best of all there has been good penetration of moisture into the soil. A few land slips have been noted, but mostly it was soaking rain without the flooding experienced further north. Trees have exploded into new growth. Some species of Syzygium (lillipillies) and other trees are looking very colourful with new leaves in shades of pink, magenta and tan. Everything is flourishing including of course our wide range of weed species. Time to hit those before they seed and watch out for thousands of small glycine plants. For those who don’t know it, glycine is a vigorous pasture legume with the usual 3-lobed leaves of many garden beans and a liking for climbing over everything, including lantana. There can be a very large seedbank in the soil from

last season. It’s just been waiting for rain to trigger germination. At last we can resume planting, but bear in mind that temperatures are rising with the time of year and we have no real idea of when the “rainy season” will arrive. Soil moisture needs to be conserved and a good blanket of mulch around each new tree has never been so important. Do keep it away from the trunk to prevent rotting of the young bark. Air circulation in that space is as important as the mulch. Gardens have also responded with Dianella species (Flax Lily) laden with bright blue berries. These are popular with birds. Fruit is as important as nectar for many of our feathered visitors. Several plants appear to be having a second flowering and Ozothamnus (Rice Flower) which flowered through the dry period is still covered in clusters of small white flowers resembling rice grains in a roughly flat-topped inflorescence. It is a very useful local garden plant.

Domestic violence is a serious social problem in Australia and men and women must join forces in helping to wipe it out. “We should continue to bring the matter to the attention of our local communities, and to our leaders, and continue to seek for solutions through education and support.”

HE RAIN AND winds have come along, as have the attendant tree failures, see photo. This tree could have easily been assessed as hazardous prior to the event. This failure occurred next door to

last editions’ tree failure, but on the leeward side of the property. My clients were so relieved that they had had the top of their damaged tree reduced before the weather came, as it had been on the windward side of their home. So, let’s look at wind direction. Predominantly, destructive cyclonic winds come from the South East, although there have been 2 major storm events in the past decade from the North East. You can now go outside and see if any of the trees to the north east or south east are tall enough to reach your house if they fell. Westerly winds, while they can be

strong and ‘aboutthattree’ gusty, don’t on Instagram, & tend to be Tony Wootton responsible for Tree Surgeon on as many tree Facebook failures, more limb failures. When planting trees in Maleny, triple the height that the label says it will grow to, and plant it further than that away from your house. Most trees on the plateau get to be 20-30 metres (80-100 ft) tall in about 20 years. The most common phrase I hear is ‘It was only this big when I put it in!’, as they gesture towards a behemoth in their garden that used to be a tiny seedling.

HERE WAS TOO MUCH positive feedback like this, to even list in HT - and the feedback centered on the improvement for this year's Sculpture on the Edge at Spicers Tamarind Retreat. The judges were amazed by the quality of the work this year. Arts Connect Inc Treasurer Marie Shannon said, “They found it very difficult to award all of the prizes unlike previous years where an obvious ‘stand out’ existed. “Our visitor numbers are double last year! Can you believe that - even with the horrible weather. Unlike previous years, no negative feedback!” The increased sales of sculptures was also a bonus. “I have over 400 people's choice forms and apart from a few suggestions about placing the medium on the didactics, everyone is happy!” smiled Marie. We are sure the prizewinners are also pleased congratulations everyone!

ELISSA CHADDOCK combines her favourite place to live with the career she has long wanted, joining Mark Clayton, Michael Reck, Susan Brant and Ellie Hood as part of the RE/MAx Hinterland team in Maleny. Growing up in a real estate family, the industry always held great attraction to Melissa. “Bringing people and homes together, helping them find solutions and fulfil dreams… a real estate agent seemed a wonderful role,” said Melissa, “but it has taken me a few years before seizing the opportunity.” Those years included 18 years in the UK, where she worked in antiques, with architects, and with local and federal government before returning to Australia in 2005 with an Environmental Studies Degree, a husband and a baby. “We decided the Maleny area was the place to settle because of the lifestyle we’d have, the diverse group of people living here and the strong sense of community. Add to that, the beautiful mountain environment, the cultural offerings and the fact it was close to the beach yet still a comfortable distance from Brisbane, made it the perfect place to call home. “Once I had obtained my real estate qualifications, I only wanted to work in this market, where we live. “It is a strong market, with all the very solid reasons that attracted us to the area continuing to attract others.”

Melissa Chaddock joins the RE/MAX Hinterland team

When she was ready to launch her real estate career she called the agent she had purchased her family home through, over a decade before. The timing was perfect for Mark Clayton, as the team were ready to grow. “Our team have customers at its heart, giving great service to a community and property market it knows really well because it has a complete focus on the area,” Melissa said. Mungo MacCallum

Game Changer M

ALCOLM TURNBULL CROWS that his National Energy Guarantee is a game changer – and so it is, but that doesn’t mean much. The energy game has been changing for well over the last decade, and in all likelihood will go on changing for the next ten years at least. The point, surely, is not to keep changing the game but to end it, delivering certainty, price stability, and above all political success. All that can sensibly be predicted so far is that there is a lot of tweaking required before Turnbull can proclaim that the light on the hill is in fact reliable, affordable and sustainable. The NEG was obviously created in haste bordering on panic, as the regulators – the experts, as Turnbull likes to call them – struggled to implement the agenda: no emissions trading scheme, no renewable or clean energy targets, cut subsidies for wind and solar, but not coal, gas or Turnbull’s pet project Snowy Hydro 2.0. Then, in the process, offer at least the hope of cheaper costs, maintain the promise that the Paris agreement is on track and make enough room between the government’s policy and the opposition’s demands to leave the opportunity to a brick fight if one is needed. Mission impossible, in fact; but they were able to produce something half way credible, which is a credit to their determination to stick to a third rate, selfcontradictory brief, even if they were manifestly unconvincing as they attempted to justify it. The most obvious hole, of course, and the one Bill Shorten latched on to first, was the claim that power prices would fall by up to a couple of bucks a week – not immediately, of course, but in a few years when and if everything turned out alright. What, he demanded, was the modelling on which that figure was based? Well, none, actually – the best Turnbull could muster was an indignant declaration that it was the assessment of his

experts – three long term regulators of the market, whose lamentable failure has led to his NEG in the first place, a lobbyist from the widely derided Business Council of Australia and his head honcho, the career public servant Kerry Schott, who, Turnbull boasted, had a degree in pure mathematics. As it happens, so do I, but I do not presume to pull complicated predictions off the top of my head and round them to the last dollar. To be fair, Schott was at least willing to admit that in fact the line about $115 a week was little more than an educated guess. A guess not much better than the critics who suggested that the bills may well increase as a direct result of the new regulations to be promulgated by NEG. Even if there were some nugatory savings, they would inevitably be absorbed in the other constant increases endemic in the fraught process of delivering energy. And as for how such putative savings would come about -- after some prodding, it emerged that the biggest catalyst would be a burst of new investment, driving down prices through market competition. But as we have been repeatedly warned, such investment would depend on long term bipartisan agreement on policy. Which means that it will come back to Labor, which appears to be in no great hurry to rush to the table. Turnbull admits that the states will be crucial, and the Labor states are, to put it mildly, sceptical. Turnbull said he wanted a respectful discussion with them, and proceeded to shower them with insults and abuse. Shorten and his shadow minister Mark Butler are content to play funny buggers, demanding more (or indeed any) details of the skeletal proposal before deciding to embrace, reject, or most likely dicker with it until the various balloons take off, settle, or just pop.

Until then there will be mischief to be made, the most blatant tactic being to agree with various economists that it could be a clever con to blindside Tony Abbott and his rump: NEG is in reality a sort of Clayton’s emissions trading scheme, a carbon price in disguise. And as such it can perhaps endorsed as a basis on which Labor can build when in government. Turnbull and his Energy (forget about the Environment) Minister Josh Frydenberg of course indignantly deny that it is anything of the kind, but they would say that, wouldn’t they? The point is that for all the bluster about engineering and economics, there is very little real change for ordinary consumers (or hard-working families are we are compelled to call them in the government’s politically correct jargon) to cling to. There may be no blackouts over summer – indeed, there had bloody well better not be. But the bills will keep coming as usual, with the only hope of solace a non-guaranteed pittance some time after 2020. This is not exactly a vision to capture the imagination of the masses, and it is probably not very smart of Turnbull to try and sell it as such. It looked like a panic move: conceived in haste, devised without any real analysis and, crucially, unlikely to provide the political dividend that was its desperately sought purpose. The weary sceptics claim that this it worse than halfhearted – it is a downright cop out. They say NEG is short for negative. There is some truth in that, but the accusation will not worry Turnbull as long as the party and the punters will wear it. The real worry is that it will be seen as too little, too late, too like buck passing – that NEG is in fact short for negligible. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

Hit the pool to beat the heat … while exercising

S

PRING IS A GREAT time to rethink your exercise routine and add some water-based activities to help you beat the heat and keep your cool. Aqua aerobics, or “aquarobics”, is the ultimate lowimpact, high-cardio exercise that strengthens the whole body. RangeCare CEO, Jenny McCafferty, considers aquarobics to be one of the best forms of exercise for people over 65 years of age. “Aquarobics is low impact resistance training which is great for protecting joints while still building muscle mass. “But it’s more than just the physical benefits,” explained Jenny. “Participating in a regular exercise class that is fun has enormous social benefits too.” RangeCare coordinates locals along the range to attend aquarobics classes offered weekly at the Nambour Aquatic Centre. If you are interested in attending, please contact

RangeCare on 5445 7044 to register your interest. “We know it’s not always easy for people to attend these types of activities so RangeCare can also organise transport from RangeCare’s Flaxton office to and from the pool,” said Jenny. “This is offered as a governmentsubsidised service for those people receiving funding through My Aged Care.” Jenny said that people not receiving government funding are also welcome to attend; however their participation will not be subsidised and they will be charged full fees. To find out more, contact RangeCare on 5445 7044.

Why Do We Dream?

D

O YOU EVER wonder the significance of your dreams? In November it is a topic for discussion with Eckankar Sunshine Coast. Director, Jennifer Therese says, "Dreams help me to work through fears and accept why things are as they are. Dreams may warn or even show me the future if necessary. "I have always taken notice of my dreams, but I didn’t know what they meant. Now I understand how important they are to me, because they give me clarity, insight and more love in my life. There are tools that I have learned to help me remember my dreams." Through Eckankar teachings, Jennifer has learnt how to tune in to her dreams and spirituality, which she says all affect daily life.

The non-profit organisation, Eckankar, provides the opportunity for everyone to discover spiritual aspects to many of life’s challenges, and offers a different issue for discussion every month, themes such as past lives, reincarnation, soul travel and karma. "People of all cultures question many of these deeper aspects of life," explained Jennifer. "Our aim is to live this life with increasing awareness, compassion and selfresponsibility." The group meet at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre 6-7.30pm every Wednesday, February to November. You can also join a discussion at Parrearra and Tewantin. IVING A SO CALLED perfect lifestyle is not a guarantee of good health. If you go through life following all the Wendy Rosenfeldt rules, eat only organic, exercise every day, avoid all sugar and never stay up late you may feel virtuous and healthy to a degree but something may be lacking. While a good daily routine and healthy diet are key factors in the quest for wellbeing, following them to the letter can get in the way of living spontaneously and blissfully. Consuming a tasty meal that includes what you normally avoid surrounded by good friends or family can be more easily digested than eating a healthy dish when you are feeling alone. So what it is the secret ingredient? Ayurveda indentifies a substance in the physiology called Ojas. You cannot see it but you can observe and feel the effects. It is the glow in the cheeks of pregnant women, the lustre in the eyes when you have fallen in love and the feeling of lightness when you are really happy. Ojas gives strength, immunity, good digestion, radiant skin, shining eyes and the feeling of bliss. It provides nourishment and integration to the physiology, mind and intellect, leading to balance in thought, speech and action. Stress, hurrying, negative emotions, excessive exercise, poor or light diet, fasting, over exposure to the elements, lack of sleep at night alcohol, injury or trauma will deplete

your levels of Ojas. Ojas is increased by doing what you love. Take time out from your busy over scheduled life for a walk in nature, a catch up with a friend or to play a musical instrument. Have a positive state of mind and focus on what is good in your life. You feel much better than whingeing about your woes or always watching the evening news. Be gentle with yourself and look after your mind and body. Listen to yourself if you feel too tired to go to the gym or do your daily workout, sometimes rest is more important than exercise. Meditation, yoga and good quality sleep can boost your Ojas supply. Eat food that has been lovingly prepared by a happy cook. It is important to take time out to cook and eat food in a settled way. Eating take away food on the run is a recipe for poor digestion. Cutting out all your favourite foods and religiously following a strict health routine is not guaranteed to create ojas but a cuddle with someone you love, a moonlit walk in the beauty of nature and a good belly laugh with your best friend is. HINTERLAND TIMES – NOVEMBER 2017

Only two months before you make those New Year Resolutions again

T

HE FOLLOWING ARE some questions that will help you to get clarity on how your thoughts and feelings are directing your mental and emotional energies so that they elicit more harmonious body chemistry and help you manifest a happier, more love filled life, for yourself and as a result of that how you interact with your world. These are typical of some of the types of questions that I use in my Life Coaching and Counseling sessions that often turn peoples lives around in wonderful ways. Don”t ponder the questions too much, just let the answers come and then later, if you like, go back and ask them of yourself again. “What would you like to have more of in your life?” “What would you like to have less of in your life?” “What are you doing consistently each day, to help improve your personal health, relationships, wellbeing and happiness?” “What things are you doing that you know on some level, aren’t serving you well and might even be sabotaging you? How could you change that?” “What’s the one thing that you could do each day that would bring you greater peace and a more satisfying interaction

with the world around you?” “For you to be living the life you really desire, what would have to change?” “When stress occurs do you talk yourself up or slip into negative self talk and negative expectations?” “What would you like for your loved ones to feel when they think about your presence in their lives?” “Do you think your life has a purpose? If so what do you think it is? If not did you ever have a feeling about this? Could you ask yourself each night as you drift off, what that purpose might be?” “Where does your passion lie? what do you think about most? Are you living your life and loving those you care about, or is routine and financial demand holding you hostage?” Remember that all change, no matter what your circumstance, can be influenced positively by a shift from inside your own mind, and this invariably manifests external changes. ADVERTORIAL

Incontinence problems are common, but never normal ...

D

ID YOU KNOW that pregnancy and childbirth are two of the major life events associated with incontinence? 1 in 3 women who have ever had a baby experience some form of urinary incontinence. Have you heard of Pelvic Organ Prolapse? Vaginal prolapse occurs when the supporting tissues relax and the organs of the vagina (bladder, bowel and uterus) descend. 50% of all women who have ever had children suffer from prolapse at some stage in their lifetime. Being a Mum comes with some statistics that can be quite alarming and potentially embarrassing. My name is Annette Bezear and my area of expertise is the treatment and management of all continence disorders and pelvic floor dysfunction. With over 30 years experience as a physiotherapist, I operate a visiting consulting service in Maleny, Beerwah, Caloundra and Maroochydore. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is recognised as one of the strategies that make a significant difference in reducing prolapse symptoms and managing incontinence. This approach is considered safe and cost effective and should be recommended as a first line of treatment. Take control of your pelvic floor muscles for life… ..take the step…make an appointment….it could change your life! Maleny Physiotherapy, every other Wednesday morning, phone: 5494 3911; Beerwah Active Physiotherapy, Tuesday and Friday mornings, call

5494 0060; Physio Fitness Maroochydore, Thursday mornings, phone 5443 4155, and Caloundra/Currimundi areas, by appointment, call 0411 049 729.

Arts & Crafts Month One of the main objectives at Healthy Homewares to support creativity in all its forms.

We warmly invite you to look for it whenever you go shopping.

Authentically MADE with the purpose to enhance your health & well-being

QUALITY

Of course, there has to be a medium of exchange but the most important thing is that the artists or craftsmen love what they are doing and want it to bring joy to the customers lucky enough to buy it. This joy is contagious!!!

Healthy Homewares is an adventure… Come and see our amazing homewares selection and garden centre and relax in our café. There is plenty of parking underneath with an elevator to both levels.

Healthy Homewares is a wonderful outing

Sustainably MADE with respect for our environment
