HEN I READ Dale Jacobsen's story on Ian and Ruth Drynan, it moved me to tears. I wonder if my Dad's suffering would have been eased had he the support of a group after his stroke? And for my mum, to be surrounded by other carers? I was almost in tears again yesterday, when someone called especially to thank me for our same-sex marriage editorial - and said it hit the nail on the head. It is not much fun thinking about death, but Gay Liddington's insight into "green funerals" makes it easier to do so. I'll be interested to hear if an eco-friendly end appeals to you, as it does for me?

The Maleny Independent School ‘tree’ logo

N JANuARy 22, 2018, after three years of planning and preparation by a core group of local parents and specialists, the Maleny Independent school will open its doors. Paul stratford, a spokesperson for the school, is extremely positive about the possibilities ahead. “A few of us had children at the Ananda Marga River school, and we realised high school was looming. We wanted more choice for our kids, so decided to create a new school. “A small group of us have led the initiative, but many people have come in and out to lend a hand, and many other local businesses and stakeholders have supported the idea. “In fact, a very well-known and popular local teacher, River stanley, is now the Maleny Independent school principal.” The school will initially cater for year 7 and 8 students, with the expectation of growth each year, aiming for year 9 students by 2019 and year 10 students by 2020. “We are starting small because this is not about being big or profitable, but about delivering a great education,” Paul explains. “We will follow curriculum benchmarks, but our approach to reaching them may vary at times from ‘traditional’ schools, with plenty of project-based learning, local specialists and mentors - and we encourage families to be interactive in the process.” Interviews are underway, and Paul says they have seen families from as far afield as Brisbane and Redcliffe apply. “We are a fee-paying school, with some state and federal funding, but we don’t want to become financially out of reach for people who really want this kind of educational choice,” Paul states. “It is important that parents and carers come and talk to us; let’s just start the conversation to see if there is a way your child can attend.” The school offers a neo-humanist, holistic approach, where students can create experiences linked to their interests and initiatives. “We want the students to learn through ‘real world’ experiences, extension programs and through making educated choices themselves, managing risks and being brave.” Located in the heart of Maleny in Coral street, the school is close to valuable resources, such as the pool, library and sports fields, and aims to build on community engagement. “We want this great community involved, and this school is a good draw for the community too.” It sounds like a win-win situation for everyone. Whhispering orses Many of us have heard of the term ‘horse whisperer’ – a trainer skilled at recognising the emotional needs, motives and desires of a horse. But how many of us know that this can work the other way around? A horse can become a ‘human whisperer’. Victoria McGuin recently found out just how this can happen.

RIVING ALONG THE Palmwoods/Hunchy border almost every day, I would see a sign for the Equine Alliance, with large paddocks, an arena, horses roaming and an occasional flurry of visitors. My curiosity piqued, I called the number on the sign and soon found myself meeting these magnificent steeds and the woman who cares for them, Helen sorensen. This generous acreage is home to five generations of Helen’s family, which began with her grandparents, John and Juliet Larard in 1948. In the 1960s Helen joined the Nambour Pony Club, which initiated her mother, Hazel Larard, into the world of horses. she became publicity officer, catering organiser and then secretary, whilst three of her children became Pony Club instructors. “We have had horses on our property for 60 years now,” says Helen. “In the mid ‘70s my mother was approached about using the horses to work with kids with disabilities, and so she started up the Palmwoods Riding for Disabled’ (RDA). It eventually became a fully-fledged charity and needed

autonomy, so moved from our home.” Helen’s mother received multiple awards for her generous work over the years, including Quota Woman of the year in 1982, a British Empire Medal for services to the community in 1986, and a Certificate of Merit in the sunshine Coast Hall of Fame in 2004. Helen herself was a recipient of a Palmwoods Citizen of the year Award for services to the disabled in 1997. “I was an RDA coach and trained as a counsellor, then in 2002 I went to work in the us and researched how to use horses in mental health. I began training with the EAGALA model of equine-assisted psychotherapy, which recognises that horses create metaphors that may represent something for the clients.” Helen returned home, with a determination to help the community with her new method. “Horses have a natural ability to read and give people feedback. We encourage them to be honest. But this only works with horses who aren’t being told what to do. “In other environments, if a horse puts its ears back it will be corrected or punished. If a horse is trained to ride it will behave in a certain way. We assess our horses for safety, but we don’t ‘correct’ them, so they can be true in their reactions.” some of Helen’s horses are ex-competition horses, some are no longer ‘wanted’, a couple have been rescued. “We have eight in the therapy herd and my husband, Milton, breeds horses, so some of these in the paddock are part Arab.” This mix of horses makes up Equine Alliance, a place where horses provide therapy and guidance for people dealing with anything from anxiety, to abuse, to autism. “Horses are sentient beings, with a connection to people,” explains Helen. “They respond immediately to what is happening in the moment, and can read body-language and non-verbal signals. Thanks to this they can mirror our emotions and intentions, and help us learn.” There is no riding involved. The person comes in, walks around and interacts with the horses, and may do certain activities – while the team observe and offer feedback on the situation. “A horse will start representing someone or something in that person’s life, even the person themselves – and when the person identifies with the horse the therapy starts. They can often make a shift and process things through working the horse, without talking to a human being.” Helen remembers one child who found the horses began clashing with each other. “We asked what he thought was happening and he said, ‘They are fighting over me’, which was what he needed at that time, someone to fight for him.” A teenager was followed around by a large shire horse, Rowan, who wouldn’t leave him be. The boy was getting quite annoyed; then Rowan lowered his muzzle across the boy’s shoulder and chest, which created a ‘lightbulb’ moment. “He realised this was what he did when he bullied people, and said, ‘This is what it must feel like when I stand over people.’ He no longer does it.”

– they are all calm and many come over to say ‘hello’ and receive a stroke before they head out. “There are two things horses need to feel safe, and that is cogency and consistency,” Helen shares. “Cogency in what we do and say and consistency in how we behave – and we provide that. “We don’t imprint our ‘stuff’ on the horses, or the visitors, as it is the honesty of their experience that we are looking for. It is very powerful work.” For more information on Equine Alliance programmes, contact: 0408 067664 or www.equine-alliance.com.au

Helen with healing horse Rowan

The horses are valuable conduits for self-awareness, and people develop skills with them that they can then transfer to life. “One girl who came on a strength-based program made a clear friendship with a horse, which helped her learn to make friends at school. Helen has had adults with high anxiety who have managed to do things they hadn’t tried for years. “Horses are really good at grounding people. your brain is no longer ‘busy’, you have to be present with a horse.” One lady who suffered from panic attacks when travelling found that if she mentally put her hand back on the horse she went straight back to a feeling of calm. “I’ve had children with violent behaviours turn up with a bodyguard, and they have not shown that behaviour here.” Helen believes the reason for this is that most of their behaviours have been for survival, “so they learn to see themselves as the horse see them, and it’s different”. The horses themselves are well-loved by Helen and her team, which is vital to their effective ‘whispering’. I watch as Helen opens the arena gate for them to roam the paddocks

The day the music died October 15-21 is National Carers Week 2017. With one stroke occurring every nine minutes, the Drynan's story is only too familiar. Stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers and leading cause of disability, and here are a couple who not only are coping with the life change, but helping others do the same.

by Dale Jacobsen

FIRsT MET IAN and Ruth Drynan over 30 years ago at the Colonial Ball in Brisbane. It was obvious right from the start that music and dancing were integral to Ian’s life. What a cruel twist of fate that both of these activities have been taken from him. With children grown, the Drynans sold their home and spent months travelling before deciding on their next phase of life. First stop was England, where Ian walked the 300-kilometre Alfred Wainwright Coast-to-Coast walk with his friend, Brian. Returning to Australia, they were in no hurry to choose their next home. Ian celebrated a milestone-birthday in August 2011. On December 6, their world changed forever. Ian suffered a major stroke. “It was totally life-changing for both of us,” explained Ruth. “It is maddening,” said Ian. Apparently this is his favourite daily expression. Ruth’s two sisters proved invaluable. The day of the stroke, Bev (with a strong nursing background) drove from Maleny to be with Ruth and remained for the next 18 months. “she was our right-hand person,” said Ruth. Val, President of the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, said “you need to be in Maleny”. Months before, a stroke Rehabilitation Centre opened at the hospital, and it was gaining a reputation as a first-class centre. Ian stayed for the next five months. Five years ago Ian walked out of hospital. “They told us Ian would never walk again,” said Ruth, “but he proved them wrong, thanks to the wonderful physios, sally and Isaac, from the hospital. They are angels.” As I chatted with Ian and Ruth about his progress and her dedication, the over-riding story was one of friendships. When Brian, his Coast-to-Coast walking buddy, heard about Ian’s situation, he hopped on a plane in London to make sure he was okay.

Another friend, a folk musician from Castlemaine, drove up from Victoria to have lunch with them, then drove back home. Fellow musicians gathered at Ian’s hospital bed and later his home to play the music that Ian could no longer play. In the drama of stroke survivors, it is so important to remember their partners who are often their carers. Ruth said, “It was hell. All I knew was that life as we knew it was over.” Ruth went along to the Caloundra stroke support. Friendship again saved the day for Ruth. “I met a woman whose husband had had a stroke similar to Ian’s, and she invited me to stay a night with them to see what would be involved in caring for Ian when he eventually returned home. It was such a generous gesture. I took note of everything and decided, I can give that a go.” The friendship deepened over time and the two couples went on a holiday to uluru. “We had so much fun,” said Ruth. “The two men sang together. We two women drew so much strength from each other.

hirers of the MCC to do so. In frustration, Ruth called on Andrew Powell who has taken up the challenge. As he said in parliament: “Whilst organisations can choose not to participate in this scheme, they do need to be careful as the Anti-Discrimination Commission would likely not look favourably upon an organisation that does this”. I asked Ian if he had a message he wanted to get across. “yes, DON’T have a stroke!” A most poignant quote comes from brain scientist, Jill Bolte Taylor who, in recovering from her own stroke, wrote in My stroke of Insight: “Please respect me. I am not stupid. I am wounded.”

Right: Ian and Brian on the Coast-to-Coast walk Below: Ian in full flight singing Fijian National Anthem at World Cup Rugby in Marseilles

“The effects you see – a paralysed side of the body, the slow speech – are only the tip of the iceberg,” explained Ruth. “It is the unseen effects that are the worst. Ian has aphasia. His intelligence remains sharp, but his brain is scrambled. He can’t process information to read or write.” Ian haltingly explained further: “you need to allow silence to give us time to think and answer. People get excited and talk rapidly, and this is too hard for our scrambled brains to follow”. Ruth is now a driving force in the Maleny stroke support Group who meet monthly in the Down under Room at Maleny Hospital; a group started by a fellow stroke survivor, Elizabeth Beim. It is support from these people and respite care from

Blackall Range Care Group, that give Ruth the strength and courage to continue caring for Ian. There are few benefits for someone with a lifelong disability, but one that can make an enormous difference to the quality of life is the Companion Card – a government initiative that allows a disabled person to be accompanied by a carer, free of charge, to events held at participating venues. For years, Ruth has been frustrated that many venues, including the Maleny Community Centre, don’t officially recognise this card, although they do strongly encourage

KEEPING OUR HISTORY ALIVE: Some local families have been part of this land since the 1800s, with tales of hardship, tragedy, adventure and perseverance. Learning these nuggets from the past is always something special, and Dale Jacobsen recently met with the great-granddaughter of one Hinterland pioneer to hear their slice of history.

OuR-yEAR-OLD COsETTE Weitemeyer struggled to keep up as her family climbed Remington’s schute, despite the load of roofing iron her mother carried on her back. Thorvald and Jane had bought land on Razorback (now Montville) – the first white people to settle in the area. The year was 1887. While they had travelled, first by train to Burpengary, then horseback to their new land, their provisions had to be shipped to Maroochydore and left on the rafting grounds at Eudlo Creek. But Richard Remington could only transport their belongings to the foot of the range, so the family shared the load scrambling up the rough track to their home. The following year Jane gave birth to Henry (Harry) – the first white baby born at Razorback. Within six years, overwhelmed by life, Jane Weitemeyer would be dead. Jane’s great-granddaughter, Dell somerville, tells the story of how Cosette met and married William Burgum 20 years

after her climb up the steep slopes of the Blackall Range. “They moved into a slab house on the banks of Obi Obi Creek which ran through grandfather’s 400-acre dairy property. Eventually they built a farmhouse that is still there. They had five kids, William, Mary, Tom, Frank (my father) and Ray.” Life, however, was not finished with Cosette. Tragedy struck once again when, during heavy rain, her husband and eldest son, aged 14, were rounding up their cows on the far side of the creek to bring them to shelter. William Jnr’s horse slipped in the flooded Obi and his father tried in vain to save him. It took the small community four days to find their bodies downstream beneath fallen logs. “Nanna continued running the dairy farm, hand-milking twice a day, while raising her remaining four kids, plus a niece and nephew who now lived with them. she was a beautiful woman in every way,” said Dell. some years later, Cosette split the family farm either side of the Obi, and Dell’s father Frank, together with his brother Ray, chose the half on the Balmoral side. The farmhouse is still there, although a little worse for wear. Brother and sister, Tom and Mary, farmed the North Maleny side.

“When I was a little girl, I owned a pony called Macaroni. I would ride him from our farm, across the creek and up to Nanna’s house with Mum and Nanna watching from their verandahs until I arrived safely.” When Tom returned from the war, he bought 600 acres of rainforest adjoining the farm which he cleared for farming. Needing access, he prepared a rough track that climbed down and up the hillside then, with just a shovel and wheelbarrow, cemented the track for wet-weather access. That track now bears his name: Burgum Road. Chatting on her verandah on Bald Knob, overlooking a garden that would do any house proud, Dell continued telling me tales of what it was like to grow up on the Range in the days when the cream truck made its twice-daily trip around dairy farms. “Our school bus was the cream truck. He would collect empty cans from the Butter Factory early in the morning and distribute them out as far as Landers schute. With the truck empty, he laid wooden slates across the back for seats and collected the kids and delivered them to school in Cedar street. In the afternoon, he did the reverse trip.” When it came time for Dell to go to high school, she expected it would be at Nambour where she would need to board. “But in 1953 they closed the school at North Maleny where dad had gone. Over the holidays, they loaded it onto a truck and brought it down Teak street and placed it beside the primary school. It was called High school Top.” Dell left the family farm aged 17 to begin a lifelong career in nursing. It took her to New Guinea “where I married a bitumen cowboy in 1967,” laughed Dell. But Maleny kept calling her back. “Whenever we were visiting Maleny, Matron at the hospital would find out and, often short-staffed, would bring me in,

sometimes for six-month stints”. she and Mal spent 27 years in Moranbah; he as an electrician in the coal mines; Dell as Matron for 10 years at the hospital before becoming district manager for the health area. They returned to Maleny for good in 1998. These days, she devotes her time to the Anglican Church and organising rosters for Meals on Wheels. “I joined five minutes after settling permanently back here,” said Dell. “I love the connection with community.” It is largely thanks to people like Dell, her husband Mal and the Maleny Historical society that stories of our pioneers remain alive and remind us of the roots of our community.

a green

way to go

S U N D AY S E R V I C E Worship from 9am

I love detective novels. But I never would have thought one would get me thinking about my own last rites. Amidst the murders, it opened my eyes to green funerals in the UK. I want to nurture the growth of a tree when I die, but there are very few places in Australia that offer this option.

Worldwide, more than 50,000,000 people pass away each year. My research indicates there is a global shift towards alternative and ‘green’ burials focusing on the use of environmentally sound products. There are over 270 natural burial sites in the uK with new sites opening each year. In comparison, I’ve found less than 20 sites in Australia.

Gay Liddington has done some research, and I think you will find it just as interesting as I did!

So, how does one plan an eco-friendly funeral?

T HAs BEEN sAID that as one grows older we attend more funerals than weddings. Each a celebration. One of a life to be lived, the other, a life lived. In 2004, I had the privilege of acting as celebrant for my mother-in-law’s funeral service. More recently, a friend diagnosed with a terminal illness and being a woman who liked to be in charge asked if I would organise and officiate the celebration of her life. We talked about flowers, music and eulogy. she was adamant at not wanting lilies and requested that I Can’t Get No Satisfaction by the Rolling stones be played at the service. I asked if we could play it afterwards with a cuppa and cake. We laughed. she relented. Discussing finances led us to the subject of quotes from funeral directors. It didn’t occur to us that there were options. I, like the general populous was conditioned to believe that when someone dies, you phone a funeral director and they take it from there.

I

To reduce the carbon footprint, consideration can be given, not only to the burial or cremation but to extras like venue, transportation, coffin or shroud. Traditionally, mourners have sent flowers to the family or would bring them to the service. Increasingly, there has been a swing towards making donations to a nominated charity. Recently, I attended a life celebration where we were asked to bring a donation in the form of personal care products for women or items for the food bank to be distributed by Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. A range of caskets that support the idea of a ‘green’ funeral reducing impact on the environment is now available. Materials include banana leaf, wicker, seagrass, rattan, pandanus, and recycled cardboard. If cremation is your preference a biodegradable urn may be the answer or urns designed to convert you into a tree, your way to a green afterlife. This could be coupled with a ‘no service’ cremation which is available from around $1200. Family and friends organise the celebration often held at home, in a park or community venue. CHOICE magazine is respected for its research and the feature ‘Take control of your last rites’ enlightens the reader as to the pitfalls and options. Do you want a sustainable farewell? 1 Leading academics believe that for Australians, natural burials are the most sustainable ‘way to go’. It is reported that cremations are only about 10% greener than a conventional burial - the process of cremation releases 160kg of CO2 making it a substantial pollutant. In addition, toxins released from coffins made of veneers add to the pollution. Orthodox burials generate methane during anaerobic decomposition, which emits a potent greenhouse gas. ‘Green’ burials, however, allow for aerobic decomposition due to increased microbial activity. When you factor in environmentally friendly materials, biodegradable substances and a shallower burial, there is the probability of less than 30kg of CO2 - plus revegetation enhances the ecological benefits. I spoke with Casey Gardner from Home Mortuary support services located at stapylton who enlightened me

on some of the more complex questions regarding the law and how creative one might be when considering a green burial. she had Hairy, an ‘emotional support dog’ by her side. Casey emphasised that it is important to have conversations about death and dying beforehand to be clear on what is preferred. Researching such matters is not desirable when one is grieving and time is of the essence. “I see a lot of businesses saying that they’re eco-friendly but I know they’re not. It’s one of those things where there’s that grey line because there’s no rules. It’s an unregulated industry in Queensland. “There is quite a market developing for biodegradable cloths. People can use a shroud instead of a coffin but only if it’s on a private or ‘green’ burial site. If you’re talking about burial in a regular lawn or monumental council cemetery then no – you have to have a coffin. “If you were doing a home burial it needs to be organised well in advance according to council guidelines.” ‘Green’ burials are now an option at the Gympie Cemetery and Alberton Cemetery (northern Gold Coast). Gympie Cemetery Trust has set aside an area next to the facility’s lake for natural burials. The Gympie Cemetery Mapping system locates unmarked graves. Casey Gardner shared that there are embalming chemicals endorsed by the Green Council of America however not so easy to access in Australia. By law in Queensland, embalming is only required if the body is to be buried in an above-ground vault or is going to be repatriated. “There are embalming fluids that are made completely out of plant extracts. They’re not designed to last for more than a few days and are designed for people who want to safely go home for a night or two, yet still have a green or environmentally friendly farewell.” I smiled at the idea… sort of like a night out! It seems that ‘green’ burials and home funerals are about so much more than caring for the environment. They

empower family and friends to have a hands-on approach which becomes part of the healing process. While there is a plethora of choices and decisions to be made in the event of the transition from one life to the next, an environmentally friendly resting place among the trees supported by wildlife and a choir of birds communicates the story of a lifecycle. Or you can just become a tree…that may even bear fruit. http://greenburialcouncil.org/resources/steelmantowncemetery-video/ 1 www.choice.com.au/health-and-body/healthy-ageing/ageing-andretirement/articles/diy-funerals-and-coffins#Do we need an FD?

COPYRIGHT Copyright protects the original expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. It is free and automatically safeguards your original works of art and literature, music, films, sound recording, broadcasts and computer programs from copying and certain other uses. Note that copyright is not registered in Australia. Material is protected from the time it is first written down, painted or drawn, filmed or taped. Copyright material will also enjoy protection under the laws of other countries who are signatories to the international treaties, of which Australia is a member.

Above: Once the excess is removed, it's down to the detail work and lots of concentration…

Copyright protection is provided under the Copyright Act 1968 and gives exclusive rights to license others in regard to copying the work, performing it in public, broadcasting it, publishing it and making an adaptation of the work. Rights vary according to the nature of the work. Rights for artistic works, for instance, are different to those for literary and musical works. Although making copies of copyright material can infringe exclusive rights, a certain amount of copying is permissible under the fair dealing provisions of the legislation. Copyright doesn’t protect you against independent creation of a similar work. Legal actions against infringement are complicated by the fact that a number of different copyrights may exist in some works particularly films, broadcasts and multimedia products. Although a copyright notice with the owner’s name and date is not necessary in Australia, it can help prove your ownership of the copyright, and is necessary to establish copyright in a few overseas countries. It can also act as a deterrent to potential infringers. Copyright is lost if the owner applies a three-dimensional artistic work industrially. In such a case, it is necessary to register the design if protection is required. The duration of copyright varies according to the nature of the work and whether or not it has been published. Depending on the material, copyright for literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works generally lasts 70 years from the year of the author’s death or from the year of first publication after the author’s death. Copyright for films and sound recordings lasts 70 years from their publication and for broadcasts, 70 years from the year in which they were made.

Work of art doors at Cairncross S

ITuATED ATOP THE steep southern end of the Blackall Range, the Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve is a haven for nature-lovers and environmentalists. Mary, Mabel and Elizabeth Thynne donated the rainforest land to the then Landsborough shire Council in October 1941 in memory of their mother and "for the preservation, conservation and exhibition of the natural flora and fauna. The Rotary Club of Maleny began developing the park in 1959 and it was officially opened on December 1, 1960, by then governor sir Henry Abel smith. Now, a new facility ‘The Discovery Centre’ has been opened to allow the public to be educated about the flora and fauna of the Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve.

When the Discovery Centre project was announced, all involved agreed it was important that the building should reflect the history and themes of the rainforest. This is where the Blackall Range Woodcrafter’s Guild (also know as the ‘Woodies’) came in, as Guild President, John Muller, explains. “We were keen to take part in the project and started thinking about the possibility of doing something in local wood species in the Discovery Centre itself; something like a reception desk/counter which would highlight the beauty of our native woods and exhibit the skills of our member's creativeness and woodcrafting. The Guild members were alerted to the fact that some

trees in the reserve were going to be removed to make way for the new structure. This became an even greater incentive to feature local wood in whatever the Guild might be asked to create. Eventually, the architects on the project, Guymer Bailey, asked the Guild to make the entry doors for the Discovery Centre. “We had previously made the Maleny Community Centre (MCC) entrance doors, and achieved a reputation on the Blackall Range for making beautiful doors. They were a carved forest of trees in Queensland Red Cedar on Red Cedar veneered flush panel doors,” John shares. “For this new project, our resident designer and master carver, David southern, came up with a design featuring trees from the Reserve with the strangler Fig (Ficus watkinsiana) and Wonga Vine (Pandorea pandorana), both common in the reserve, growing on the trunks. As the reserve also has a lot of beautiful Queensland Red Cedars (Toona australis), a wood ideal for carving, it was decided to again use it as the main carved feature. sourcing enough local Red Cedar to do the project became an issue due to limited availability of old growth salvaged material, however, a new member to the Guild, Barry Burgum was aware of some old growth Cedar stored on a farm outside Murgon. Due to its age and colour, it proved ideal for our purpose. “We then chose a solid timber substrate, New Guinea Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) as it is stable and durable, and it was felt the natural beauty of this wood would

complement the rich colours of the old-growth Cedar. sawn wood in this species was readily available from Brittons Timber at Narangba.” The making of the doors was a long and detailed process. “David southern lead the team to make the Cedar blanks and the carving of the trees, while John Muller arranged for the specification and manufacture of the substrate panels. “When the Red Cedar boards had been dressed to the required thickness, they were grain matched to suit the patterns, then assembled and glued together to form the blanks for carving.” And so began the arduous job of removing the excess timber by power carving, and then the painstaking detail hand carving that requires a high level of concentration, including working on the door handles which are made as separate units and glued in place. Finally, the carvings were ready. Back in the workshop the Rosewood for the door panels has been dressed and jointed using the Domino Jointing system. A final sand and then it was time to start adding the carved panels and complete the doors. This type of project, in a club such as the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild, has an enormous benefit in developing healthy team spirit within the membership and lifting everyone’s skill levels. “The dedication shown by those participating in the

project was tremendous and very rewarding. In all, about 1000 hours of labour went into the manufacture of the doors,” John shares. John says, “It was a nice experience for our members to receive feedback on the public reaction to the entrance way. The doors attract a great deal of attention from visitors to the Discovery Centre.” The Guild should be rightfully proud of creating an invaluable and enduring legacy and work of art, which has been embraced by locals, our community and visitors alike.

Rotary prepare for fun at Maleny Manor It’s that time of the year when the racing fraternity gears up for the “Race that stops the Nation” - a time for fun, suspense, fashion parades , a wager or two and an opportunity to enjoy the annual Rotary Club of Maleny Melbourne Cup Lunch, and support two very worthwhile local community organisations. The Rotary Club of Maleny is hosting its third Melbourne Cup Day fundraising lunch at Maleny Manor. The two previous events have raised nearly $13,000 for the community and we plan on another financially successful, and more importantly, fun day this year. The multi-award winning Maleny Manor will once again provide the venue; and internationally-known model, Lauren Vickers, will be there as she was last year, to compere the fashion parade and co-host the event with her father Rick, a Maleny local.

UDIENCES IN REGIONAL towns across Australia should not be deprived of seeing the best in the performing arts – particularly if the artists are Australians who have achieved excellence in their art form. Many regional Queenslanders cannot drive/fly to Brisbane to see the opera, orchestra, singers and theatre. Here on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland we are very fortunate that such artists take up the invitation of the Maleny Arts Council to bring their shows here – for example: Queensland Opera, Queensland Theatre, Jane Rutter, and the US based Frank Ferrante (Groucho). On October 15 we have Tenori performing here, hot on the tail of their regional Australian tour. Tenori comprises three exciting tenors, who met internationally when all were members of the Ten Tenors.

Tenori play in Maleny on October 15

If you love tenors, you must see ...

Tenori by Jennifer Radbourne, President Maleny Arts Council

All three are known nationally and internationally for their beautiful tenor voices and also for their passionate and entertaining performances. They perform on cruise ships, but you don’t have to pay for a cruise, you can see them in Maleny. They perform in major cities across Australia, but you can see them in Maleny. When I interviewed David Kidd as to why they enjoy performing to audiences in small regional towns, he said,

"People are always grateful you've made the effort to come to their part of the world. It's no effort for us, we love the travel and we find towns that have a strong Arts Council are far more engaged in the process. They're keen to meet the artists and have a chat". He also described regional audiences as "more enthusiastic in their applause, a crowd in the big concert halls can sit on their hands, they're often a little jaded. It's all grand and exciting, but you have a different relationship with a crowd who are sitting two metres away". So, your date with these three fabulous tenors is on

October 15 at 2pm in the Maleny Community Centre. They will perform songs from the worlds of Opera, Music Theatre and Swing, with perhaps a few surprises thrown in. They’re excited to premiere songs from their justreleased album, Timeless, a collection of enduring classics, covering everything from Verdi to McCartney. You can meet the tenors after the show on the deck and let them know that our hospitality and our appreciation for visiting Maleny is ‘the best’, just as they are ‘the best’. Bring your friends and make this a glorious Sunday afternoon.

F

EMALE GENITAL mutilation, sex trafficking, child and early marriage, women’s employment, human rights, the gender pay gap. After nearly 100 years of empowering women and working against discrimination, although improvements have happened, Zonta International is still fighting these battles… Chartered on October 25, 1997, the Blackall Range Club was initiated by Maria Gardner from the sponsoring Zonta Club of Fraser Coast. Diane Leggo, Membership Chair of the District Board, contacted potential members and organised the fledgling group. International President, Brisbane’s Mary Magee, welcomed the incoming board and members inducted by Brisbane Zontian and International Board member, Jane O’Brien, who also presented the charter and gavel. In its 20 years of existence the club had made considerable contributions to the local community. Coordinator, charter member and past president, Ann Koenig said, “Every woman who has been a member of our club has contributed to its success. “One of our first initiatives was the production of a book of women’s stories sweet sisters edited by Jill Morris and Eliza Burfein, with cover design by Liz Heber; and current member Jenny Tatton organises the Business Directory of the Mapleton and Flaxton areas. “We provide refuge packs for women who find it necessary to go to a women’s refuge with nothing; and we pack birthing kits for women in developing countries to protect mother and baby from dying through neo-natal tetanus, who have no other means for giving birth,” said Ann. One event designed to encourage women’s creativity provided some unexpected results.“From 1999 to 2010 as a fundraising event we held an annual Women in Art exhibition with prizes in various categories. “One of our regular exhibitors painted horses. Over the years the horses got more and more like horses, and finally she not only won a prize but also sold a painting. We thought if we did nothing else in all those years, empowering this woman was perhaps the most satisfying.” There are a range of international awards, including an annual scholarship of $1500 to a woman who is at usC.

Zonta have been providing this for ten-plus years, and have encouraged and assisted some extraordinary women. At a club level, Zonta Club of Blackall Range supports a range of local services including Women’s shelters, Mapleton Library preparing for Prep Program and supplying Breast Care Cushions to Nambour Hospital. “We also recognise and honour an outstanding woman from our local community (who is not a Zontian) in our annual Women of Achievement, which is awarded on International Women’s Day, at our Dusk on the Deck event,” added Ann. “As a club we have supported Australian Dr Catherine Hamlin’s Fistula Clinic in Ethiopia since our foundation, and recently we have been holding an annual morning tea as our major fundraiser specifically to the Hamlin Fistula Clinic. We also added the Zonta International Liberian Fistula program to our list.” A side benefit to Zonta members is support for each other through friendships that start on the common base of community service. In short, membership of Zonta is a privilege and the members of the Zonta Club of Blackall Range have consistently served the women in our region with distinction. To celebrate, all past members are invited to an anniversary dinner on October 28 at the Orangery, Maleny, contact: membership@zontablackallrange.org.au http://www.zontablackallrange.org.au

Youth Festival at MNC

Supporting LGBTI youth

EsIDENTs CAN HELP us celebrate Maleny soldiers Memorial Hospital’s 30th anniversary on saturday, October 14, from 11am-4pm at 17 Bean street, Maleny. staff and Maleny soldiers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary members will host a fête to celebrate 30 years since the hospital was opened at its current location. Acting Director of Nursing, Glennis McAlpine, said the fête was an opportunity to welcome the community and help raise funds for the Hospital Auxiliary. The community event will feature food stalls, entertainment, a Maleny’s Got Talent competition (please phone 5420 5025 to register), games and fun activities for children, health services displays, and Back to Maleny– Born in Maleny (a competition for all those born in Maleny Hospital). Ms McAlpine said. “Over the past 30 years, many items of equipment have been purchased thanks to the kind donations and fundraising activities of the community, Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and local community clubs. “It’s going to be a great day and I hope you’ll all come out to support our hospital and our auxiliary”.

OVEREIGN EXPRESSION will be happening on Friday October 13 from 3-6pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, as part of the annual youth Festival. you are invited to this event to celebrate, connect, share and come together with a common vision, as those involved hope to build a more conscious community, that values each individual’s authentic expression. This festival is also a foundation to showcase a wide array of unique, original talent amongst youth across the sunshine Coast region, Paige Doran with Duke (pictured) can join in or spectate. This year the youth event is organised by students at the Maleny Flexi school as part of their Certificate 3 in Business with the support of MNC. The intention is to explore social justice issues for youth, selfexpression, fun and creativity. young people are encouraged to come along and express themselves creatively through music, performance, art and workshops. stalls and information booths from youth services across the sunshine Coast will be on hand. Entry fee is a gold coin donation per person. https://www.facebook.com/events/ 1889689451296626

VER THE PAsT few years there has been much discussion about the prevention of harassment and bullying of young people in relation to their sexuality. The experience and/or fear of discrimination are key risk factors contributing to higher rates of depression and anxiety among LGBTI populations. LGBTI people are also at greater risk of suicide and selfharm. A Maleny-based Ally Network, operating in cooperation with the Neighbourhood Centre, is being established to support young people. A free workshop is being held for key people to become better informed about LGBTI issues, and who may potentially become Allies, although this is not a condition of participating in the workshop. Ex-Maleny High student, Jared Ashcroft (pictured with Heather Cameron), stated, “If this support had been available when I was at school my life would have been so much easier.” The workshop is being held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on saturday October 21, between 10am – 2pm. Please contact heathercameron2012@hotmail.com or 0498 248 463 for further information or to register for the workshop.

HiS mOnTH We are featuring the work of Gold Coast-based artist Donald James Waters. Donald is an established, australian artist with an illustrious career spanning well over three decades. While best described as a contemporary artist, Donald’s artwork transcends many genres to create a truly unique yet ever evolving and eclectic style. Donald is a man who is passionate about his art. He sees it as an adventure that must be experienced not only by the artist, but also by the viewer. His artworks take you on a journey into a vibrant and colourful world, using stylised strokes, overemphasised characters and bold blocks of colour. Donald’s career has taken his art to every corner of the globe, and his distinctive style has made its way into the catalogues of many private and corporate collectors alike, including that of Queen elizabeth ii’s art collection.

City of Crows

I AM, I AM, I AM

On a Magical Do-Nothing Day

By Chris Womersley

By Maggie O’Farrell

by Beatrice Alemagna

A haunting novel that submerges you into the nightmare labyrinth that is Paris in the 17th Century. A place where murder, plague, witchcraft and poisonings are an everyday occurrence. It was during the reign of King Louis XIV that the Affair of the Poisons shook French society. Prominent members of the aristocracy were implicated on charges of witchcraft and murder. The scandal even reached the inner circle to the king. This was a time of superstition and alchemy and Womersley has done a brilliant job of recreating this historic and gothic milieu. We follow the story of one woman who is desperate to save her child from plague. This is an intricate and alluringly rendered novel for fans of historical fiction and just as compelling as a work of literary fiction. City of Crows will leave you as though you have feasted on something dark and sinister and delicious. Chris Womersley is a highly awarded Australian author and this novel proves his work is always exciting and original.

A childhood illness she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. A terrifying encounter on a remote path. A mismanaged labour in an understaffed hospital. This is a memoir with a difference: seventeen encounters with Maggie at different ages, in different locations, reveal to us a whole life in a series of tense, visceral snapshots. It is a book to make you question yourself: what would you do if your life was in danger? How would you react? And what would you stand to lose? I AM, I AM, I AM is a book you will finish newly conscious of your own vulnerability, and determined to make every heartbeat count. This is one of those magical books that you devour and then want to pass on to everyone you know. O'Farrell's writing is superb and this is possibly her best yet.

Winner of the Landerneau Award for picture books 2017 This is a wonderful book to spur imagination, exploring and offers a reminder about the importance of having a break from screen time. “All I want to do on a rainy day like today is play my game. My mom says it’s a waste of time, but without my game, nothing is fun! On the other hand, maybe I’m wrong about that...“ "True magic is found in the simple but transformative act of experiencing nature." While reading On a Magical Do-Nothing Day, one gets the sense that the illustrator has become lost in her drawings, and as a reader, you will want to do the same; they are exquisite - with an intriguing colour palette that one rarely sees. A compelling, magical picture book with startlingly beautiful words and pictures.

A new playgroup for Maleny A

NEW MONTEssORI playgroup, from 9.30am-11.30am on Tuesday mornings, will starting running for the school term at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, with Kimi Hadley at the helm. Kimi has a background in Montessori education, having worked at the River school previously, and also run Montessori family daycare. “Through links with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, I noticed there was a need for another group for young parents and their children,” says Kimi. “I was chatting to local community members and it kept coming up, so I started thinking more seriously about doing it.” For those who are unsure of the style of a Montessori playgroup, Kimi has some thoughts, “I suppose Montessori education is very much focused on development of the individual - respecting the child's concentration. “When someone is figuring something out for themselves we step back and allow that exploration to be very independent - until the child needs our assistance.” As for Kimi’s philosophy: “Montessori underlines my beliefs and entire work with children. The Ananda Marga River school has also inspired my morals and values for children and their magical world of discovery, emerging The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre offers a new playgroup with a Montessori philosophy - pictured are Annabel and Cohen discovering strawberries they had planted

autonomy and community connectedness. “I believe each child develops in their own way, at their own pace and in a completely individual and unique way to any other. Our role as the adult in children's lives is to observe this precious stage and only offer help with the permission of the child. “I combine the ideals of both Montessori and Ananda Marga education systems to create a niche education approach for our unique local community.” so, if you would like a space for your 0-3 ½ year-old to share connections, support and fun within a Montessori-inspired setting, please call Kimi on 0498 389 070.

Scarecrow Season

Opens

N

OW THAT sPRING is here, there’s an influx of straw creatures around the hills of the Mary Valley, all vying for a cash prize in the annual Mary Valley scarecrow Festival. scarecrows come out of hiding on October 7, and will guard farm gates and village shops until the judges reveal the best of them on November 10 at the inaugural “harvest dinner” at Kandanga Farm store. some will even hang around

for the Mary River Festival in Kandanga on November 11. The scarecrow festival is great fodder for ‘crow spotting’, the fun game for visitors who travel country roads looking for straw creatures, arty sculptures and other creations honouring the tradition of building scarecrows. There’s a map to lead you down country roads and discover new places. But it’s not all about the navigation: you can win $50 by taking a photo of yourself with as many scarecrows as possible in the Mary Valley between October 7 and November 11. Post the selfies on the Mary Valley scarecrow Festival Facebook page and hashtag #mvscarecrows you can find scarecrows from Conondale and Kenilworth, through the sunshine Coast Hinterland north to Dagun, near Gympie. It's a great excuse to pack a picnic and tour through Mary Valley Country. The locals will tell you that it’s all about fun. A few ‘crows have a distinct purpose in life, carrying on as their forebears did, protecting crops by scaring away the birds. But others are just there to dress up the paddocks and maybe even share the wry humour of the country folk who live in the Mary Valley all year round. It’s how they deal with the seasons of country life – flood, drought and everything in between. And even better, making scarecrows doesn’t cost an arm and a leg! you usually have the bones of a scarecrow in the shed – a broomstick, a bale of hay and some old clothes. The scarecrow map will be uploaded to Google on October 13, so that you can plan your self-drive tour. E

ARLIER THAN usuAL this year, the temperatures have started to soar (and with the lack of rain) lawns are withering, paddocks browning off, trees sheding leaves, houses are bakeing (unless they are well insulated) and if you don’t have air-conditioning in your car, it’s time to cook in your own juices. What we need is shade and that’s a great incentive for you to plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs create shade and humidity and are nature’s air conditioners and that’s what is needed to cool the temperature and protect the delicate north European complexions of the majority of us! Rainforest trees and shrubs generally have dense dark green foliage that provides shade and cooling temperatures (just go for a walk in Mary Cairncross on a hot day). Growing trees and shrubs, will save both your power bill and you from wilting! However before I whip you into a frenzy of shade tree planting, you need to plan a bit. First you need to think what plants will work best where. Planting tall trees to the south of your house has several benefits including protecting from strong southerly’s, cooling the air temperature through their shade and adding moisture to the air on a hot dry day. Most

importantly when planting trees near your house always take into consideration how high the tree will grow, eg. if it can grow to forty metres and never plant closer than forty metres to your house, so that in a worst case scenario and the tree falls down – it won’t hit your house (also keep that in mind for your neighbour’s house!) Too many times we see soaring gum trees planted on fence lines in small acreage blocks. Planting shrubs and groundcovers on the north side will ensure that you don’t miss out on the winter sun (let’s not forget how cool it was just a month or so back!). One way to achieve height and summer shade (and not miss out on the winter sun) is to plant deciduous trees. Luckily, we do have a few deciduous native trees to choose from such as Red Cedar, White Cedar and a range of useful fruit and nut trees such as Pecan and Nectarines. Talking about shade, the new Forest Heart fern house has opened this week with a great range of shade loving plants. Looking great at the moment are our Bird’s-Nest Ferns, Walking-stick Palms, Tree Ferns, King Ferns, Native Violets, Bolwarra and many more. so, all your for shade loving and shade creating plants come and see us at Forest Heart and you too, can be keeping cool in the shade.

Weather and Climate

P

REsENTLy, THE MAIN topic of conversation is about the lack of water. About a year ago, following a period of below average rainfall, Barung drew attention to the concept of a ‘green drought’. This year the ‘drought’ is definitely brown with dams low, supplementary feeding of stock, and water levels in bores dropping. Gardeners are deciding which plants to lose; waiting time for a water tanker is several weeks and Baroon Pocket dam is decidedly low. We all hope the weather will eventually come good with decent storms, which it probably will although the question is, when? Because of our topography, rainfall totals will vary across the Blackall Range and will also be affected by the broader weather systems driving the storms. The extent of the variation can be quite surprising, even in one valley. Weather, however, is not climate. Our climate has warmed and records show the trend has been steadily moving upwards

since 1910. One degree of warming may not sound much but the effects are seen in our food producing areas of sE Australia and sW Western Australia. We can curse the weather but in the long run have to adapt to the climate. In our own region, whether we live in or

VER THE next couple of months we are going to share some before and after shots that hopefully will inspire your green thumbs. Pictured is a section of the beautiful gardens at The Falls Wedding Chapel Montville. The time lapse between the two photos is just 13 months. A well balanced soil rich in nutrients, organic matter and pH to suit plant types is one of the most important factors in successful gardening.

near eucalyptus forests, rainforests or other forest types, we are noting the survivors of a prolonged dry spell. Established trees with deep roots are tapping into what soil moisture there is, others are not and are probably no longer suited to a warmer, drier climate. The period when we can undertake revegetation projects may be later and shorter so we need to plan with that in mind. In the garden, the planting palette may also change. Grow proven, hardy locals rather than water hungry exotics and be very wary of popular succulents. Keep them well contained. They are likely to be the next set of environmental weeds. They propagate very easily. Water may be stored naturally in the ground or in a tank, but is still a finite resource. use it carefully, particularly in the garden.

I

WAs RECENTLy called to inspect the failure of a large White Euodia Tree, Melicope micrococca, in Maleny (see photo). The irony is that I had just finished telling someone that I hadn’t ever seen one of this species fail, even though the timber is really light. It had failed in the ferocious westerly winds we have been experiencing, and the failure point was, as usual, a tight, acute angle, Vshaped fork. This was a big section, over 600mm in diameter at the failure point. Fortunately, it fell away from the house, which was only 7 metres away, but it definitely had the potential to badly damage the house and possibly injure the inhabitants. Now we will have to reduce the rest of the tree down to a point that will eliminate the risk of further failure, whilst still being able to

thankfully keep a reasonable amount of structure and foliage. The hard thing for me as a tree lover has been to come to the realisation of the potential for destruction that these woody giants hold. This has been hammered home by having to inspect tree failures on average every week or two for the past 20 years or so. Causes are usually wind acting on structural faults, but also include lightning strike, drought stress, pests and disease, and root damage/failure. Please don’t be caught out. Check and care for your trees.

Mungo MacCallum

Malcolm,

you’ve already said that Do you know what your pet is thinking? Would you like to know? I work safely and efficiently with your beloved fur friends to help them overcome and heal from previous experiences throughout its life. Humans have ‘off’ days, so too do animals. I can help lessen these and increase the ‘good’ days. If you have just bought a new baby animal into the house from their litter mates, I can help with the stress of the transition. The same goes for older animals, whether they be rescue or foster.

HINTERLAND TIMEs – OC TOBER 2017

Well it was not exactly water tight – or perhaps gas tight.

T

HE DEAL WHICH Malcolm Turnbull announced last week after yet another talkfest with the major gas suppliers ended with a lot of reassurances (from our Prime Minister, at least) but nothing that could be described as a binding commitment. The three big exporters – shell, Origin and santos – agreed that they would reserve some supplies for domestic users over the next two Australian summers to offset what may or may not become serious shortfalls for a couple of years. The idea, apparently, is that they will hold some of the gas they had hoped to sell on the spot market – their existing contracts for gas exports are apparently already locked in. This will be then made available for the gas retailers to purchase at, presumably, whatever price the market will bear. Which is one of the many catches in what Turnbull now claims as a breakthrough, although it sounded suspiciously like a similar meeting with the same players some months ago. The idea then, and now, was that unless the gas moguls could be persuaded to play ball, the government would take out the big stick: it would legislate for compliance, so the moguls would do better to cop it sweet. And obviously, after considerably arm twisting, and after getting the best advice possible from their well resourced lawyers and accountants, they agreed – well, up to a point. so they will swear, hand on wallet, that if there are to be blackouts in the coming months, it will not be their fault. Which leads to the question: if the worst happens and there are blackouts, whose fault will it be? Turnbull, of course, has the answer – or, rather, the answers: it’s Bill shorten and the Labor Party – they may have left office four years ago, and the coalition government has done bugger all to fix the problems since, but blame Blackout Bill. Or blame the states, or renewables, or the rapacious power companies, but don’t blame us. But this formula was looking pretty threadbare even before last week, and now it has been blown away entirely, because Turnbull has given an assurance, a guarantee, a solemn promise: he has solved the impasse. so now he owns the solution he has brokered, and if anything goes wrong he will be held responsible. And this will apply even if it is the kind of unforseen and unforeseeable weather events that paralysed south Australia’s grid all those months ago and which Turnbull still likes to claim was the negligence of the state government and the reckless reliance on renewables – which was in fact a very minor part reason for the blackout, but so what. The point is that he has no excuses left, which was always going to be the case anyway. Having declared it an emergency, a crisis, he has run out of options: having claimed to have resolved it, he now has to deliver.

But in one sense, that is the easy bit. Most consumers do not lay awake at nights worrying that the lights will go out or the stove will run out. They assume that the supply will be more or less reliable and if there are occasional outages, they will be repaired quickly and efficiently. They will whinge if they are not – let’s face it, they will whinge in any case, and they will whinge more if they feel that Turnbull has, yet again, let them down. But the blackouts our Prime Minister has been harping on are an aberration. What is inevitable, the bit they really resent, is the regular accounts, which rise constantly, apparently regardless of anything governments, federal or state, are able to do. Turnbull proclaims the three pillars of reliability, sustainability and affordability, but while the first has been on hold more or less indefinitely while the coalition party rooms sort out their differences and he has declared victory on the second, the third – the elephant that arrives in the letter box every month or so – remains intractable. Turnbull has admitted this, which is why he has now abandoned his free-enterprise mantra to extolling the need for government intervention on almost every level. so he snarls at AGL and its CEO Andy Vesey for their perfectly rational decision to wind down the ancient and unreliable Liddell plant and relace it with something more modern and efficient – and, of course, profitable. But it is not just AGL: it is the whole industry. so when shell, Origin and santos sit down to work out how to pay for the ultimatum Turnbull has demanded, they are not likely to make their first priority finding ways to lose money. And there is no reason why they should: if they are simply going to switch their gas reserves from export to domestic sales, it should not cost them anything. In fact, they may make a small margin on the deal, in spite of the ballyhoo about transparency that Turnbull hopes will bring in a brave new world of competition. What is almost certain is that retail prices will not go down, and this means that the consumers’ hip pocket nerves will not be assuaged, and that means that the politics of the situation are unlikely to improve in spite of last week’s announcement, and that means that the disastrous Newspolls will roll on towards the final third of their journey towards Turnbull’s fateful 30th failure. Once again Turnbull has found an answer – at least a sort of one, assuming everything goes according to plan – but it is not the answer to the question the voters are asking: when are we going to get some relief from soaring prices and stagnant wages? And when are you, the leader we endorsed so enthusiastically more than two years ago, going to stop complaining that it is all everyone else’s fault and face up to the fact that the buck – our buck as well as yours – stops here? Making deals is all very well, but if they aren’t the right deals, you have to ask what’s the point.

ENTuRE CARE CALOuNDRA is a family-owned business that provides denture services across the sunshine Coast, successfully operating out of Caloundra for many years. Owner, Aaron Pryor, is a qualified dental prosthetist, married and raising his two children here on the sunshine Coast. With a family background of over 37 years in the dental industry, this seventh generation sunshine Coast man has over 12 years experience, and is excited to be expanding his business to Maleny, where his parents have just built a house. Denture Care Maleny is happy to be operating from within Banksia House Dental surgery, “Working with Martin from Banksia House, we realised that many of his patients did not like to travel to the Coast for services. We discussed how we could better assist his patients – which led us to think ... why stop at Banksia House patients? Let’s offer our services to everyone west of the motorway and save them the drive to see us in Caloundra.” One of the main reasons that Denture Care Caloundra has been a success is because of his personal approach. No two patients are the same or have the same needs and Aaron truly understands this.

Dental prosthetist Aaron Pryor has now opened Denture Care Maleny

He walks you through the process, explaining every step along the way and ensuring that not only are you comfortable, but confident. “Having a patient leave happy and proud to smile with their new denture is what I pride myself on,” Aaron explained. Denture Care Maleny is pleased to offer free consultations and a full comprehensive range of services including: full and partial dentures, comfortable flexible dentures, repairs and relines. Also offered is a seniors discount, and all health funds are accepted and DVA rebates. New evidence on factors causing bowel cancer

T

HE MOsT RIGOROus, systematic, global analysis of the scientific research on colorectal cancer was published last month by the World Cancer Research Fund International. They investigated 99 studies from around the world, analysing diet, weight, physical activity and factors which increase or decrease the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Conducted at the Imperial College London, more than 29 million adults and over 247,000 cases of colorectal cancer were examined, then independently assessed by an international scientific panel. Wholegrains, vitamin D, foods containing vitamin C, fish, multivitamin supplements, and low intakes of fruit and non-starchy vegetables were all researched.

Ayurvedic Health Advice to Suit You The leader is the mirror of the Collective Consciousness

T

MAPLETON ~ MONTVILLE LE E ~ MALENY A EN Y ~ IMBIL ALENY IM MB L

5478 6600 6600 00

HE ELECTION OF Donald Trump has brought an interest in politics to a greater range of society. Children as Wendy Rosenfeldt young as 5 are now well versed in what the American president is up to. Where previously they would have had little interest in political leaders, particularly in other countries, I have heard about children having Trump as the character for their birthday party piñata, gleefully smashing his head to get the lollies inside. I recently met a 4 year old who said that the person she most hated was Donald Trump. While his antics may be providing amusement for some as well as despair for many, the fact that he is where he is reflects on the society surrounding him. Maharishi always maintained that the leader is just the innocent mirror of the Collective Consciousness. To change the leader you have to change the quality of the collective consciousness. To reduce violence and negativity in the society you have to enliven coherence in the collective mind. From quantum physics we know that at the subatomic level of life everything is connected. There is a unified Field, where all the disparate laws of nature are found to be part of the same intelligence. When the individual mind transcends and experiences this state of awareness, it wakes it up in the collective consciousness of the society. Maharishi predicted that when 1% of the population of a city or country practised Transcendental Meditation together

it was enough to affect the collective consciousness. When this was achieved it was noted that the crime rate went down, traffic accidents decreased, and hospitalisations were lower. Events that indicated a rise in creativity and confidence were also evident such as a rise in the stock market and an increase in patent applications. In 1993, Maharishi organised a large group of people to go and meditate in Washington with the intention to lower the crime rate. When they achieved the super radiance number, the crime rate dropped dramatically by 23%. After the group disbanded the crime rate gradually crept up to what it had been. The statistics that this was a coincidence was less than 2 in one billion. There are places around the world where big groups practice their TM together every day in order to stabilise the world consciousness. When the 1% effect is attained, people in the immediate environment feel more coherent without doing anything themselves. Their thinking is more holistic and less impulsive. It is the opposite to what happens when people start to panic. By enlivening a state of unified awareness in the collective consciousness meditators can positively contribute to more peace in the world. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation. To find out more call 5499 9580 or email wendy.rosenfeldt@tm.org.au

Optimize your health and well being

M

ANy DOCTORs are now saying that stress aggravates and contributes up to 80% of all health problems. The problem is that quite often we don’t realize that we are stressed. We are so powerfully into controlling our body and just getting on with whatever it is that drives us that we don’t even really notice that our breath is tight and we just put those sore muscles down to physical exertion. The body isn’t really a mystery, it invites us to understand how it works at its best. Research is making huge strides into the body mind emotion connection, called Psychoneuroimmunology, and how that influences our health. It is also showing how lifestyle and nutrition impacts our health both negatively and positively. Poor nutrition, stress, and poor sleep quality exert a high price, negatively influencing 80% of our health problems. We are finding that when we breathe through our left nostril we are calming our nervous system. I’ve had patients report that this helps them get a better nights sleep. And when we breathe through our right nostril we are activating our nervous system. This type of yoga breathing is done by blocking off the right nostril and taking slow gentle breaths in and out of the left nostril, calming the flight or fright part of your

nervous system, and for those times when you need a little boost, closing off the left nostril and breathing in and out through the right nostril will recharge your mind and nervous system. The B group vitamins, in particular Vitamin B 12, play an important role in energy revitalization, drinking lots of fresh filtered water is important, as is eating fresh organic unprocessed food. Gluten found in wheat, contributes to inflammation in many people, often increasing gut and mood problems, try taking it out of your diet for a few weeks and see how you feel. Vitamin D3 has been shown to support your immune system, Vitamin C taken with every meal has been shown to increase your uptake of Iron, magnesium helps soothe those tight muscles and for the brain fog, Ginko and Bacopa herb often work miracles in restoring mental clarity. Above all, nurture what is most important to you, your health, your emotions, your loved ones and your connection to the sacred, these provide deep roots that sustain you when its needed. ADVERTORIAL

Is your neck pain giving you headaches? R ECuRRENT HEADACHE can persist for years and there are many causes. Tension-type headache, migraine, and headaches because of a neck joint disorder are three common types. These neck-related headaches are commonly called ‘cervicogenic’ headache, usually felt on one side of the head. you'll find it is always the same side and they don't swap sides like migraine. It always includes neck pain, is mild-to-moderate intensity, and neck movements are stiff and painful in a cervicogenic headache. Typically, it starts in the neck and then moves into a headache. This is opposite to migraine and tension-type headaches. symptoms of different types of headaches, like neck pain and tenderness, are often quite similar - so it can be confusing. your physiotherapist will first examine you to determine if your symptoms fit the cervicogenic headache pattern, as each type requires a different treatment method. There are so many possible causes of neck problems: a car accident, sport injury, and osteoarthritis in neck joints after middle age can all cause trauma. Poor posture is also a common cause. The evidence is growing - physiotherapy treatment is the best management for cervicogenic headaches (and may assist with other headache types too). you'll be given a program for manual therapy, exercise, work practice advice and education. For assessment and management of your neck pain and headaches, call Maleny Physiotherapy for an appointment with Tim or Mary on 5494 3911.
